Measurement of polarization observables T, P, and H in π0 and η photoproduction off quasi-free nucleons. THE EUROPEAN PHYSICAL JOURNAL. A, HADRONS AND NUCLEI 2023; 59:232. [PMID: 37860634 PMCID: PMC10582157 DOI: 10.1140/epja/s10050-023-01134-0] [Citation(s) in RCA: 0] [Impact Index Per Article: 0] [Reference Citation Analysis] [Abstract] [Grants] [Track Full Text] [Figures] [Subscribe] [Scholar Register] [Received: 08/04/2023] [Accepted: 09/21/2023] [Indexed: 10/21/2023]
Abstract
The target asymmetry T, recoil asymmetry P, and beam-target double polarization observable H were determined in exclusive π 0 and η photoproduction off quasi-free protons and, for the first time, off quasi-free neutrons. The experiment was performed at the electron stretcher accelerator ELSA in Bonn, Germany, with the Crystal Barrel/TAPS detector setup, using a linearly polarized photon beam and a transversely polarized deuterated butanol target. Effects from the Fermi motion of the nucleons within deuterium were removed by a full kinematic reconstruction of the final state invariant mass. A comparison of the data obtained on the proton and on the neutron provides new insight into the isospin structure of the electromagnetic excitation of the nucleon. Earlier measurements of polarization observables in the γ p → π 0 p and γ p → η p reactions are confirmed. The data obtained on the neutron are of particular relevance for clarifying the origin of the narrow structure in the η n system at W = 1.68 GeV . A comparison with recent partial wave analyses favors the interpretation of this structure as arising from interference of the S 11 ( 1535 ) and S 11 ( 1650 ) resonances within the S 11 -partial wave.

Performance of commercial SARS-CoV-2 wild-type and Omicron BA.1 antibody assays compared with pseudovirus neutralization tests. J Clin Virol 2023; 165:105518. [PMID: 37354690 DOI: 10.1016/j.jcv.2023.105518] [Citation(s) in RCA: 1] [Impact Index Per Article: 1.0] [Reference Citation Analysis] [Abstract] [Track Full Text] [Journal Information] [Subscribe] [Scholar Register] [Received: 02/21/2023] [Revised: 05/12/2023] [Accepted: 06/05/2023] [Indexed: 06/26/2023]
Abstract
BACKGROUND Commercially available ELISA-based antibody tests are used to approximate vaccination success against SARS-CoV-2 in at-risk patients, but it is unclear whether they correlate with neutralization of the Omicron variant. METHODS 269 serum samples of a cohort of 44 non-immunosuppressed participants and 65 MTX-treated rheumatic patients taken before and after COVID-19 booster vaccinations were measured using COVID-19 antibody testing systems with wild-type and Omicron BA.1 antigens developed by three different manufacturers (surrogate virus neutralization test cPass, and binding antibody tests QuantiVac and SeraSpot), as well as with a pseudovirus neutralization test (pVNT). The pVNT was considered the gold standard for determining the presence and level of anti-SARS-CoV-2 antibodies. RESULTS All three wild-type ELISAs showed excellent test performance compared with wild-type neutralization in pVNT. However, out of 56 samples without Omicron BA.1 neutralization in pVNT, 71.4% showed positive results in at least one and 28.6% in all three wild-type ELISAs at the manufacturer-defined cut-offs. Omicron ELISAs showed either decreased specificity (57.1% and 55.4% for binding ELISAs) or sensitivity (51.2% in cPass) compared to Omicron neutralization in pVNT. The proportion of any false positive results among all samples decreased from 26.5% before to 3.2% after booster vaccination, however binding antibody test specificities remained below 70%. CONCLUSIONS We found a poorer test performance of new Omicron antibody test systems compared to wild-type tests in detecting neutralizing antibodies against the corresponding SARS-CoV-2 variants. Decisions for booster vaccination or passive immunization of at-risk patients should not be based solely on antibody test results.

Course of ankle-brachial-index 12 months after intravascular lithotripsy in calcified peripheral lesions. Eur Heart J 2022. [DOI: 10.1093/eurheartj/ehac544.1943] [Citation(s) in RCA: 0] [Impact Index Per Article: 0] [Reference Citation Analysis] [Abstract] [Track Full Text] [Journal Information] [Submit a Manuscript] [Subscribe] [Scholar Register] [Indexed: 11/12/2022] Open
Abstract
Abstract
Background
Intravascular lithotripsy (IVL) is a relatively novel treatment option for calcified lesions in peripheral artery disease. Little is known about the mid to long-term functional status of the patients and target lesion revascularization rate (TLR) after IVL only procedure.
Purpose
To evaluate the course of ankle-brachial-index (ABI) and to assess the rate of revascularization 1 year after intravascular lithotripsy performed on calcified peripheral lesions.
Methods
Between December 2018 and January 2021 IVL was performed on 61 limbs of 51 patients presenting with Rutherford classes 2–5. Ankle-brachial-index (ABI) was documented before the procedure as well as 1 day, 6 months and 1 year after the procedure within a single center real-life registry. Further endpoint was revascularization with PTA or peripheral bypass surgery. The vast majority of cases were done as IVL only procedure (58%) All procedures were done in upper leg/pelvic stenosis.
Results
ABI measurement after 12 months was done in 42 of 51 patients (82%). Three pts were missed due to media sclerosis. Due to loss of follow-up, ABI after 6 months could not be performed on 4/61 patients (7,8%) and 12-month-ABI in another 8/51 cases (15,6%). Initial baseline ABI of 0.6±0.26 before the procedure increased to 0.8±0.25 (p<0.0001) one day afterward. After 6 months, the ABI of 0.8±0.27 (n=49; p<0.0001) was still significantly improved compared to baseline. After 1 year, ABI with 0.7±0.22 was still improved, however not significantly different from baseline (Figure 1). Target lesion revascularization was needed in 7 patients (13%), 4 with subsequent IVL, 3 with PTA and 2 with peripheral bypass surgery.
Conclusions
In our large single center registry, IVL performed mainly as a stand-alone procedure was safe and effective even after a mid-term follow up. TLR was necessary in 13%, which is lower than in previous published IVL data (20,7% as in DISRUPT-PAD-II) [1]. ABI after 12 months improved but did maintain statistical significance, compared with other procedure like scoring balloon [2].

Abstract
Purpose: We investigated whether COVID-19 patients on mechanical
ventilation (MV) had a different extubation outcome compared to non-COVID-19
patients while identifying predictive factors of extubation failure in the
former. Methods: A retrospective, single-center, and observational
study was done on 216 COVID-19 patients admitted to an intensive care unit (ICU)
between March 2020 and March 2021, aged ≥ 18 years, in use of invasive MV for
more than 24 h, which progressed to weaning. The primary outcome that was
evaluated was extubation failure during ICU stay. A statistical analysis was
performed to evaluate the association of patient characteristics with extubation
outcome, and a Poisson regression model determined the predictive value.
Results: Seventy-seven patients were extubated; the mean age
was 57.2 years, 52.5% were male, and their mean APACHE II score at admission was
17.8. On average, MV duration until extubation was 8.7 ± 3.7 days, with
14.9 ± 10.1 days of ICU stay and 24.6 ± 14.0 days with COVID-19 symptoms. The
rate of extubation failure (ie, the patient had to be reintubated during their
ICU stay) was 22.1% (n = 17), while extubation was successful in 77.9% (n = 60)
of cases. Failure was observed in only 7.8% of cases when evaluated 48 hours
after extubation. The mean reintubation time was 4.28 days. After adjusting the
analysis for age, sex, during of symptoms, days under MV, dialysis, and
PaO2/FiO2 ratio, some parameters independently predicted extubation failure: age
≥ 66 years (APR = 5.12 [1.35-19.46]; p = 0.016), ≥ 31 days of symptoms
(APR = 5.45 [0.48-62.19]; p = 0.016), and need for dialysis (APR = 5.10
[2.00-13.00]; p = 0.001), while a PaO2/FiO2 ratio >300 decreased the
probability of extubation failure (APR = 0.14 [0.04-0.55]; p = 0.005). The
presence of three predictors (ie, age ≥ 66 years, time of symptoms ≥ 31 days,
need of dialysis, and PaO2/FiO2 ratio < 200) increased the risk of extubation
failure by a factor of 23.0 (95% CI, 3.34-158.5). Conclusion:
COVID-19 patients had an extubation failure risk that was almost three times
higher than non-COVID-19 patients, with the extubation of the former being
delayed compared to the latter. Furthermore, an age ≥ 66 years, time of symptoms
≥ 31 days, need of dialysis, and PaO2/FiO2 ratio > 200 were independent
predictors for extubation failure, and the presence of three of these
characteristics increased the risk of failure by a factor of 23.0.

Triangle Singularity as the Origin of the a_{1}(1420). PHYSICAL REVIEW LETTERS 2021; 127:082501. Abstract
The COMPASS Collaboration experiment recently discovered a new isovector resonancelike signal with axial-vector quantum numbers, the a_{1}(1420), decaying to f_{0}(980)π. With a mass too close to and a width smaller than the axial-vector ground state a_{1}(1260), it was immediately interpreted as a new light exotic meson, similar to the X, Y, Z states in the hidden-charm sector. We show that a resonancelike signal fully matching the experimental data is produced by the decay of the a_{1}(1260) resonance into K^{*}(→Kπ)K[over ¯] and subsequent rescattering through a triangle singularity into the coupled f_{0}(980)π channel. The amplitude for this process is calculated using a new approach based on dispersion relations. The triangle-singularity model is fitted to the partial-wave data of the COMPASS experiment. Despite having fewer parameters, this fit shows a slightly better quality than the one using a resonance hypothesis and thus eliminates the need for an additional resonance in order to describe the data. We thereby demonstrate for the first time in the light-meson sector that a resonancelike structure in the experimental data can be described by rescattering through a triangle singularity, providing evidence for a genuine three-body effect.

Abstract
A measurement of the double-polarization observable E for the reaction γ p → π 0 p is reported. The data were taken with the CBELSA/TAPS experiment at the ELSA facility in Bonn using the Bonn frozen-spin butanol (C4 H9 OH) target, which provided longitudinally-polarized protons. Circularly-polarized photons were produced via bremsstrahlung of longitudinally-polarized electrons. The data cover the photon energy range fromE γ = 600 to 2310 MeV and nearly the complete angular range. The results are compared to and have been included in recent partial wave analyses.

HIV DNA reservoir and elevated PD-1 expression of CD4 T-cell subsets particularly persist in the terminal ileum of HIV-positive patients despite cART. HIV Med 2021; 22:397-408. [PMID: 33421299 DOI: 10.1111/hiv.13031] [Citation(s) in RCA: 6] [Impact Index Per Article: 2.0] [Reference Citation Analysis] [Abstract] [Key Words] [Track Full Text] [Journal Information] [Subscribe] [Scholar Register] [Received: 01/29/2020] [Revised: 08/23/2020] [Accepted: 11/04/2020] [Indexed: 11/29/2022]
Abstract
OBJECTIVES Despite its importance as an HIV anatomic sanctuary, little is known about the characteristics of the HIV reservoir in the terminal ileum (TI). In blood, the immune checkpoint inhibitor programmed-death-1 (PD-1) has been linked to the HIV reservoir and T-cell immune dysfunction. We thus evaluated PD-1 expression and cell-associated HIV DNA in memory CD4 T-cell subsets from TI, peripheral blood (PB) and rectum (RE) of untreated and treated HIV-positive patients to identify associations between PD-1 and HIV reservoir in other sites. METHODS Using mononuclear cells from PB, TI and RE of untreated HIV-positive (N = 6), treated (n = 18) HIV-positive and uninfected individuals (n = 16), we identified and sorted distinct memory CD4 T-cell subsets by flow cytometry, quantified their cell-associated HIV DNA using quantitative PCR and assessed PD-1 expression levels using geometric mean fluorescence intensity. Combined HIV-1 RNA in situ hybridization and immunohistochemistry was performed on ileal biopsy sections. RESULTS Combined antiretroviral therapy (cART)-treated patients with undetectable HIV RNA and significantly lower levels of HIV DNA in PB showed particularly high PD-1 expression in PB and TI, and high HIV DNA levels in TI, irrespective of clinical characteristics. By contrast, in treatment-naïve patients HIV DNA levels in memory CD4 T-cell subsets were high in PB and TI. CONCLUSION Elevated PD-1 expression on memory CD4 T-cells in PB and TI despite treatment points to continuous immune dysfunction and underlines the importance of evaluating immunotherapy in reversing HIV latency and T-cell reconstitution. As HIV DNA particularly persists in TI despite cART, investigating samples from TI is crucial in understanding HIV immunopathogenesis.

Abstract

Abstract
Data on the beam asymmetry Σ in the photoproduction of η mesons off protons are reported for tagged photon energies from 1130 to 1790 MeV (mass range from W=1748 MeV to W=2045 MeV). The data cover the full solid angle that allows for a precise moment analysis. For the first time, a strong cusp effect in a polarization observable has been observed that is an effect of a branch-point singularity at the pη^{'} threshold [E_{γ}=1447 MeV (W=1896 MeV)]. The latest BnGa partial wave analysis includes the new beam asymmetry data and yields a strong indication for the N(1895)1/2^{-} nucleon resonance, demonstrating the importance of including all singularities for a correct determination of partial waves and resonance parameters.

Abstract
We present a novel locking scheme for active length-stabilization and frequency detuning of a cavity optomechanical device based on the optical spring effect. The error signal is generated by utilizing the position measurement of a thermally driven intra-cavity nanomechanical device and employing its detuning-dependent frequency shift caused by the dispersive coupling to the cavity field. The scheme neither requires external modulation of the laser or the cavity nor does it demand for additional error signal readout, rendering its technical implementation rather simple for a large variety of existing optomechanical devices. Specifically, for large-linewidth microcavities or in situations where other locking schemes appear unfavorable conceptually or are hard to realize technically, the optical spring lock represents a potential alternative for stabilizing the cavity length. We explain the functional principle of the lock and characterize its performance in terms of bandwidth and gain profile.

Abstract
The explicit breaking of the axial symmetry by quantum fluctuations gives rise to the so-called axial anomaly. This phenomenon is solely responsible for the decay of the neutral pion π0 into two photons (γγ), leading to its unusually short lifetime. We precisely measured the decay width Γ of the [Formula: see text] process. The differential cross sections for π0 photoproduction at forward angles were measured on two targets, carbon-12 and silicon-28, yielding [Formula: see text], where stat. denotes the statistical uncertainty and syst. the systematic uncertainty. We combined the results of this and an earlier experiment to generate a weighted average of [Formula: see text] Our final result has a total uncertainty of 1.50% and confirms the prediction based on the chiral anomaly in quantum chromodynamics.

Abstract
BACKGROUND In addition to a broad and clinically diverse spectrum of known primary cutaneous lymphomas, for which an incidence of 1-3:100,000 is postulated, each year further entities are specified and defined. The goal is the presentation of a case series from daily clinical routine. METHODS Over a period of 6 years and 2 months, patients consulting the Department of Dermatology, Medical Center University of Freiburg, were registered. Subsequently, collectives of mycosis fungoides (MF), Sezary syndrome (SS), CD30+ lymphoproliferative diseases, single cases with rare primary cutaneous lymphomas, and subcollectives of B‑cell lymphomas were examined. The high number of MF cases allowed the additional quantitative analyses of the types of therapies used in this group. RESULTS Yearly 16-25 new diagnoses of primary cutaneous lymphoma are made. The evaluation of 163 primary cutaneous lymphoma revealed 111 cases with MF (68.1%), including 9 particular variants, 15 primary cutaneous CD30+ lymphoproliferative diseases (9.2%) dominated by 10 lymphomatoid papulosis (LyP), in addition to 5 primary cutaneous anaplastic large cell lymphoma (PCALCL), 6 SS (3.68%), and 24 cutaneous B‑cell lymphomas (14-72%). Three cases with rare primary cutaneous T/NK cell lymphomas are addressed in detail. In all, 82% of MF cases were stage IA and IB. The descending use of therapies for stage I-III included steroids and diverse UV therapies followed by bexarotene, interferon-α, methotrexate, and extracorporal photophoresis. CONCLUSIONS Diagnoses of cutaneous lymphomas belong to a vast spectrum of differential diagnoses. This registry describes frequent findings and shows rare variants. You can only diagnose what you know; accordingly, a collection of case reports, which we wish to encourage, can help in processing and specification of entities.

Abstract
OBJECTIVE Reducing the time required for diagnosis is one of the major challenges to improving and accelerating the management of patients. The aim of this work is to describe an organizational innovation in the management of patients with hepatobiliary or pancreatic diseases, and to report the initial results. MATERIALS AND METHODS A multidisciplinary and multi-professional working group designed and instituted a patient-centered organizational system that optimizes the investigation of liver and pancreatic diseases, in order to achieve diagnosis in one day. From January 2017 to June 2017, all patients referred for consultation for hepatobiliary or pancreatic pathology were included in this new management pathway. Data were collected prospectively in a standardized form. RESULTS Fifty-six patients with hepatobiliary or pancreatic disease were evaluated in the program during dedicated slots over a total of 20 days. Of these, four patients underwent evaluation in the program twice. The average number of patient slots in the program was three per day (range: 1-5). An additional computed tomography (CT) and/or magnetic resonance imaging (MRI) was required in 23 (41.7%) of the visits. These imaging studies were performed the same day, including nine patients who required both types of imaging (16.7% of cases). "One-day diagnosis" established an accurate diagnosis by the end of the day in 49 patient encounters (81.7%). Overall assessment of this organization was considered excellent by 46 (83%) of patients. CONCLUSION An organizational innovation has made it possible to effectively diagnose hepatobiliary or pancreatic pathology within one day in the majority of cases, with good patient satisfaction. It is now necessary to evaluate the medico-economic aspect of this organization, and more generally to develop a methodology for multidimensional evaluation of organizational innovations.

Abstract
The first measurement of transverse-spin-dependent azimuthal asymmetries in the pion-induced Drell-Yan (DY) process is reported. We use the CERN SPS 190 GeV/c π^{-} beam and a transversely polarized ammonia target. Three azimuthal asymmetries giving access to different transverse-momentum-dependent (TMD) parton distribution functions (PDFs) are extracted using dimuon events with invariant mass between 4.3 GeV/c^{2} and 8.5 GeV/c^{2}. Within the experimental uncertainties, the observed sign of the Sivers asymmetry is found to be consistent with the fundamental prediction of quantum chromodynamics (QCD) that the Sivers TMD PDFs extracted from DY have a sign opposite to the one extracted from semi-inclusive deep-inelastic scattering (SIDIS) data. We present two other asymmetries originating from the pion Boer-Mulders TMD PDFs convoluted with either the nucleon transversity or pretzelosity TMD PDFs. A recent COMPASS SIDIS measurement was obtained at a hard scale comparable to that of these DY results. This opens the way for possible tests of fundamental QCD universality predictions.

Abstract
BACKGROUND Intestinal failure (IF) patients received parenteral nutrition (PN) as the only available therapy until intestinal transplantation (ITx) evolved as an accepted treatment. The aim of this article is to report the long-term outcomes of a series of ITx performed in pediatric and adult patients at a single center 9 years after its creation. PATIENTS AND METHODS This is a retrospective analysis of the ITx performed between May 2006 and January 2015. Diagnoses, pre-ITx mean time on PN, indications for ITx, time on the waiting list for types of ITx, mean total ischemia time, and warm ischemia time, time until PN discontinuation, incidence of acute and chronic rejection, and 5-year actuarial patient survival are reported. RESULTS A total of 42 patients received ITx; 80% had short gut syndrome (SG); the mean time on PN was 1620 days. The main indication for ITx was lack of central venous access followed by intestinal failure-associated liver disease (IFALD) and catheter-related infectious complications. The mean time on the waiting list was 188 days (standard deviation, ±183 days). ITx were performed in 26 children and 14 adults. In all, 32 procedures were isolated ITx (IITX); 10 were multiorgan Tx (MOT; 3 combined, 7 multivisceral Tx (MVTx), 1 modified MVTx and 2 with kidney); 2 (4.7 %) were retransplantations: 1 IITx, 1 MVTx, and 5 including the right colon. Thirteen patients (31%) received abdominal rectus fascia. All procedures were performed by the same surgical team. Total ischemia time was 7:53 ± 2:04 hours, and warm ischemia time was 40.2 ± 10.5 minutes. The mean length of implanted intestine was 325 ± 63 cm. Bishop-Koop ileostomy was performed in 67% of cases. In all, 16 of 42 Tx required early reoperations. The overall mean follow-up time was 41 ± 35.6 months. The mean time to PN discontinuation after Tx was 68 days (P = .001). The total number of acute cellular rejection (ACR) episodes until the last follow-up was 83; the total number of grafts lost due to ACR was 4; and the total graft lost due to chronic rejection was 3. At the time of writing, the overall 5-year patient survival is 55% (65% for IITx vs 22% for MOT; P = .0001); 60% for pediatric recipients vs 47% for adults (P = NS); 64% when the indication for ITx was SG vs 25% for non-SG (P = .002). CONCLUSIONS At this center, candidates with SG, in the absence of IFALD requiring IITx, showed the best long-term outcomes, independent of recipient age. A multidisciplinary approach is mandatory for the care of intestinal failure patients, to sustain a rehabilitation and transplantation program over time.

Abstract
The purpose of the study that is presented herein was to develop near-infrared reflectance spectroscopy (NIRS) calibrations to predict total phosphorus (P), phytate-P, and protein concentrations of feed ingredients commonly used in monogastric feed formulation. Samples representing 14 vegetable ingredients (cereals, cereal by-products, and oilseed meals) were collected worldwide throughout 2013. The samples were assayed by standard wet chemical techniques for total P, phytate-P, and protein content. There was substantial variability in protein, phytate-P, and total P within and between ingredients used in the calibration set. Protein content varied from 76 to 487 g/kg. Total P ranged from 2.09 and 22.5 g/kg and phytate-P ranged from 0.99 and 13.8 g/kg. Within these broad ranges, NIRS values were highly correlated for determination of protein, total P, and phytate-P with a standard error of prediction equal to 9.06 g/kg, 0.80 g/kg, and 0.66 g/kg, respectively. The wide diversity and heterogeneity of the mix of feed ingredients allowed the development of NIRS calibrations of sufficient accuracy to help nutritionists control the nutritional composition of their feed.

Abstract
The COMPASS Collaboration at CERN has measured diffractive dissociation of 190 GeV/c pions into the π(-)π(-)π(+) final state using a stationary hydrogen target. A partial-wave analysis (PWA) was performed in bins of 3π mass and four-momentum transfer using the isobar model and the so far largest PWA model consisting of 88 waves. A narrow peak is observed in the f0(980)π channel with spin, parity and C-parity quantum numbers J(PC)=1(++). We present a resonance-model study of a subset of the spin-density matrix selecting 3π states with J(PC)=2(++) and 4(++) decaying into ρ(770)π and with J(PC)=1(++) decaying into f0(980)π. We identify a new a1 meson with mass (1414(-13)(+15)) MeV/c2 and width (153(-23)(+8)) MeV/c2. Within the final states investigated in our analysis, we observe the new a1(1420) decaying only into f0(980)π, suggesting its exotic nature.

Abstract
CONTEXT Glechon spathulata Benth. and Glechon marifolia Benth. (Lamiaceae, Mentheae) are aromatic plants used in traditional medicine for the treatment of viral infections. OBJECTIVE The chemical composition and antiviral and antifungal activities of Glechon spathulata and Glechon marifolia essential oils were investigated. MATERIALS AND METHODS The oils were obtained by hydrodistillation and analyzed by GC-FID and GC-MS. Anti-herpes virus (HSV-1) activity was examined in Vero cells by yield reduction assay, in doses of 0.0095% v/v and 0.039% v/v, for G. spathulata and G. marifolia oil, respectively. Antifungal activity was carried by the broth microdilution method, in oil concentrations that ranged from 5.2 to 500 µg/mL. RESULTS β-Caryophyllene (14.2% and 32.2% for G. spathulata and G. marifolia, respectively) and bicyclogermacrene (17.1% and 16.5%, respectively) were the major components of both oils. At noncytotoxic concentrations of the essential oils, the viral titer was reduced by up to 2 log10 for KOS and VR-733 strains. The antifungal activity was observed against Trichophyton rubrum (MIC 10-83 µg/mL) and Epidermophyton floccosum (MIC 83-500 µg/mL). The oil of G. spathulata exhibited activity against the three strains tested (KOS, VR733, and 29-R), whereas G. marifolia oil was active against two strains, KOS and VR733. DISCUSSION AND CONCLUSION The chemical composition for G. spathulata and G. marifolia essential oils is very similar. The oil of G. spathulata can be promising as a new antifungal agent against dermatophytes. The findings add important information to the biological activity of Glechon species essential oils, specifically its antiviral and antidermatophytic properties.

Measurement of the charged-pion polarizability. PHYSICAL REVIEW LETTERS 2015; 114:062002. Abstract
The COMPASS collaboration at CERN has investigated pion Compton scattering, π(-)γ→π(-)γ, at center-of-mass energy below 3.5 pion masses. The process is embedded in the reaction π(-)Ni→π(-)γNi, which is initiated by 190 GeV pions impinging on a nickel target. The exchange of quasireal photons is selected by isolating the sharp Coulomb peak observed at smallest momentum transfers, Q(2)<0.0015 (GeV/c)(2). From a sample of 63,000 events, the pion electric polarizability is determined to be α(π)=(2.0±0.6(stat)±0.7(syst))×10(-4) fm(3) under the assumption α(π)=-β(π), which relates the electric and magnetic dipole polarizabilities. It is the most precise measurement of this fundamental low-energy parameter of strong interaction that has been addressed since long by various methods with conflicting outcomes. While this result is in tension with previous dedicated measurements, it is found in agreement with the expectation from chiral perturbation theory. An additional measurement replacing pions by muons, for which the cross-section behavior is unambiguously known, was performed for an independent estimate of the systematic uncertainty.

Abstract
Urinary composition is the result of the interplay of all metabolic processes, including all metabolites and toxins produced. Any change in urine composition influences urinary supersaturation, the major thermodynamic driving force of crystal formation. Urolithiasis is a wide-spread disease with a prevalence rate of 4% to 10%. Formation risk of calcium-oxalate, by far the most common mineral in uroliths, is quantified by the Bonn-Risk-Index (BRI). The BRI measures induced crystal growth within native urine and shows superior diagnostic sensitivity and specificity compared to other urolithiasis risk indices. The concept of BRI quick test presented in this work allowes even untrained persons to easily determine the urolithiasis risk. Many diseases lack a simple, easily accessible and cost effective diagnostic approach to monitor their course and treatment success. Since BRI takes into account every constituent of native urine, it can be used to monitor a wide range of metabolic diseases.

Abstract
New data on the polarization observables T, P, and H for the reaction γp→pπ(0) are reported. The results are extracted from azimuthal asymmetries when a transversely polarized butanol target and a linearly polarized photon beam are used. The data were taken at the Bonn electron stretcher accelerator ELSA using the CBELSA/TAPS detector. These and earlier data are used to perform a truncated energy-independent partial wave analysis in sliced-energy bins. This energy-independent analysis is compared to the results from energy-dependent partial wave analyses.

Abstract
Dermatomycoses are among the most widespread and common superficial and cutaneous fungal infections in humans. There is an urgent need to develop efficient and non-toxic antimycotic agents with a specific spectrum of activity. Triterpenes have been demonstrated to exhibit a wide range of biological activities, including antifungal activities. In this study, through hemisynthesis, we aimed to obtain triterpene-isosteric molecules from betulinic and ursolic acids to improve the antifungal activity and spectrum of action of these compounds. Six compounds were resynthesized and tested against eleven mucocutaneous and cutaneous mycotic agents. The results of the susceptibility assays were expressed as the minimal inhibitory concentration (MIC). The MIC values of the piperazinyl derivatives of ursolic and betulinic acids that were active against pathogenic yeasts were in the range of 16-32 μg/mL and 4-16 μg/mL, respectively, whereas fungicidal effects were observed at concentrations ranging from 16 to 128 μg/mL and 8 to 128 μg/mL, respectively. The piperazinyl derivative of betulinic acid exhibited an antifungal profile similar to that of terbinafine and was the most effective derivative against dermatophytes. This strategy led to a promising candidate for the development of a new antifungal agent.

Abstract
The first measurement of the helicity dependence of the photoproduction cross section of single neutral pions off protons is reported for photon energies from 600 to 2300 MeV, covering nearly the full solid angle. The data are compared to predictions from the SAID, MAID, and BnGa partial wave analyses. Strikingly large differences between data and predictions are observed, which are traced to differences in the helicity amplitudes of well-known and established resonances. Precise values for the helicity amplitudes of several resonances are reported.

Abstract
PURPOSE The success of liver transplantation (LT) is accompanied by an increased need for organs. The wider use of older donors and marginal organs with risk factors such as steatosis has lead to a new interest to improve the outcome with marginal organs. We herewith report a novel technique for LT with in situ preparation and immediate warm-ischemia liver transplantation (WI-LT). The aim of our study was to demonstrate the technical feasibility and report the transplant course. METHODS Six patients underwent WI-LT at our institution. Hepatectomies during procurement and LT were both performed in parallel by different surgical teams. Technical factors and postoperative allograft function were analyzed. RESULTS All six WI-LTs were performed without intraoperative complications with a mean warm-ischemia time (WIT) of 29.0 min. No patient developed primary non-function or required retransplantation. Mean alanine aminotransferase (194.0 ± 170.4 U/l) and aspartate aminotransferase (316.3 ± 222.1 U/l) values on the first postoperative day were low, indicating a low ischemia/reperfusion injury and an excellent liver function. CONCLUSIONS These results demonstrate that WI-LT is a safe and technically feasible approach for LT with possibly reduced IRI and an excellent postoperative allograft quality. WI-LT may therefore be considered in individual patients especially with extended criteria donors to eventually improve postoperative allograft quality.

Significant impact of patient age on outcome after liver resection for HCC in cirrhosis. Eur J Surg Oncol 2013; 40:208-13. Abstract
OBJECTIVE Hepatocellular carcinoma (HCC) is one of the most common malignant tumors worldwide. The majority of patients with HCC have cirrhosis. Beside liver transplantation the resection is an established curative treatment option for patients with HCC in cirrhosis. However, the long term success is limited by a high tumor recurrence rate. Furthermore, by many patients surgical resection is restricted by poor liver function. The purpose of this study was to investigate the influence of patient age on long term outcome after liver resection in patients with HCC in cirrhotic liver. Further purpose was to define the potential prognostic factors. PATIENTS AND METHODS The outcome of 141 patients with liver cirrhosis after curative resection was analyzed using a prospective database. Only patients with postoperative histological assurance of HCC were included in the database. Patients with fibrolamellar HCC were excluded. RESULTS By patients below 70 years of age the 1-, 3- and 5-year survival rates were 78.5%, 56.5% and 47.1%. By patients over 70 years the 1-, 3- and 5-year survival rates were 59.9%, 40.3% and 6.7%. Cumulative survival of the total collective was significant influenced by patient age, Clavien grade, positive lymph vessels, mechanical ventilation and BMI. The overall postoperative morbidity was 44.7%. No intraoperative deaths were observed, but 11 patients (8 older than 70 and 3 younger than 70 years) died during the hospital stay. Clavien grade correlated with preoperative increased GGT, need for intraoperative blood and fresh frozen plasma transfusion. CONCLUSIONS Patient age and postoperative complications are more relevant for the outcome than many tumor factors, especially by patients over 70 years of age. In contrast, the prognosis of patients below 70 years of age is significantly better and a 5 year survival rate above 50% could be shown in our patients. However, by carefully selected elderly patients with HCC in cirrhosis an acceptable long term survival is reachable.

Background: Genetic risk factors for sporadic pancreatic cancer are largely unknown but actually under high exposure. Findings of correlations between the AB0 blood group system (Chromosome 9q34,1—q34,2) and the risk of pancreatic cancer (PC) in patients from Asia, America and south Europe have already been published. So far it is unclear, whether this correlation between blood group an PC incidence can be found in German patients as well. Methods: One hundred and sixty-six patients who underwent a resection of PC were evaluated in a period between 2000 and 2010. Blood group reference distribution for the German population is given as: 0: 41%; A: 43%; B: 11%; AB: 5%; Rhesus positive: 85%; Rhesus negative: 15%. Analyses were done using the non-parametric Chi2-test (p-value two sided; SPSS 19.0). Results: Median age was 62 (34–82) years. Gender: female 73/44%; male: 93/56%. Observed blood group proportions: 0: 43 (25.9%)/A: 94 (56.6%)/B: 16 (9.6%)/AB: 13 (7.8%)/Rhesus positive: 131 (78.9%)/negative: 35 (21.1%). We detected a significant difference to the German reference distribution of the AB0 system (Chi2 19.34, df 3, p < 0.001). Rhesus factor has no impact on AB0-distribution (Chi2 4.13, df 3, p = 0.25), but differs significantly from reference distribution—probably due to initial AB0-variation (Chi2 4.82, df 1, p = 0.028). The odds ratio for blood group A is 2.01 and for blood group 0 is 0.5. Conclusions: The incidence of PC in the German cohort is highly associated with the AB0-system as well. More patients with blood group A suffer from PC (p < 0.001) whereas blood group 0 was less frequent in patients with PC (p < 0.001). Thus, our findings support the results from other non-German surveys. The causal trigger points of this carcinogenesis correlation are still not known.
