Abstract
With ~14,000 extant species, ants are ubiquitous and of tremendous ecological importance. They have undergone remarkable diversification throughout their evolutionary history. However, the drivers of their diversity dynamics are not well quantified or understood. Previous phylogenetic analyses have suggested patterns of diversity dynamics associated with the Angiosperm Terrestrial Revolution (ATR), but these studies have overlooked valuable information from the fossil record. To address this gap, we conducted a comprehensive analysis using a large dataset that includes both the ant fossil record (~24,000 individual occurrences) and neontological data (~14,000 occurrences), and tested four hypotheses proposed for ant diversification: co-diversification, competitive extinction, hyper-specialization, and buffered extinction. Taking into account biases in the fossil record, we found three distinct diversification periods (the latest Cretaceous, Eocene, and Oligo-Miocene) and one extinction period (Late Cretaceous). The competitive extinction hypothesis between stem and crown ants is not supported. Instead, we found support for the co-diversification, buffered extinction, and hyper-specialization hypotheses. The environmental changes of the ATR, mediated by the angiosperm radiation, likely played a critical role in buffering ants against extinction and favoring their diversification by providing new ecological niches, such as forest litter and arboreal nesting sites, and additional resources. We also hypothesize that the decline and extinction of stem ants during the Late Cretaceous was due to their hyper-specialized morphology, which limited their ability to expand their dietary niche in changing environments. This study highlights the importance of a holistic approach when studying the interplay between past environments and the evolutionary trajectories of organisms.

Abstract
The Permo-Triassic interval encompasses three extinction events including the most dramatic biological crisis of the Phanerozoic, the latest Permian mass extinction. However, their drivers and outcomes are poorly quantified and understood for terrestrial invertebrates, which we assess here for insects. We find a pattern with three extinctions: the Roadian/Wordian (≈266.9 Ma; extinction of 64.5% insect genera), the Permian/Triassic (≈252 Ma; extinction of 82.6% insect genera), and the Ladinian/Carnian boundaries (≈237 Ma; extinction of 74.8% insect genera). We also unveil a heterogeneous effect of these extinction events across the major insect clades. Because extinction events have impacted Permo-Triassic ecosystems, we investigate the influence of abiotic and biotic factors on insect diversification dynamics and find that changes in floral assemblages are likely the strongest drivers of insects' responses throughout the Permo-Triassic. We also assess the effect of diversity dependence between three insect guilds; an effect ubiquitously found in current ecosystems. We find that herbivores held a central position in the Permo-Triassic interaction network. Our study reveals high levels of insect extinction that profoundly shaped the evolutionary history of the most diverse non-microbial lineage.

Abstract
(1) Unravelling the molecular basis underlying major evolutionary transitions can shed light on how complex phenotypes arise. The evolution of eusociality, a major evolutionary transition, has been demonstrated to be accompanied by enhanced gene regulation. Numerous pieces of evidence suggest the major impact of transposon insertion on gene regulation and its role in adaptive evolution. Transposons have been shown to be play a role in gene duplication involved in the eusocial transition in termites. However, evidence of the molecular basis underlying the eusocial transition in Blattodea remains scarce. Could transposons have facilitated the eusocial transition in termites through shifts of gene expression? (2) Using available cockroach and termite genomes and transcriptomes, we investigated if transposons insert more frequently in genes with differential expression in queens and workers and if those genes could be linked to specific functions essential for eusocial transition. (3) The insertion rate of transposons differs among differentially expressed genes and displays opposite trends between termites and cockroaches. The functions of termite transposon-rich queen- and worker-biased genes are related to reproduction and ageing and behaviour and gene expression, respectively. (4) Our study provides further evidence on the role of transposons in the evolution of eusociality, potentially through shifts in gene expression.

The past diversity of Isoptera is relatively poorly documented. Many early-diverging families are only represented today by relicts of their Mesozoic and Cenozoic richness. Therefore, the onset of their evolutionary history and the transitions between families, or even between subsocial and eusocial ways of life, remain difficult to decipher and require additional fossil occurrences. Here, we report the oldest worker/pseudergate trapped in amber and a new Mastotermitidae, both from Hkamti amber. We document a diverse assemblage of species representing early-diverging families from the ‘Mid’-Cretaceous of Myanmar, including two new genera and four new species in as many different genera: Anisotermes bourguignoni sp. nov., Longitermes pulcher gen. et sp. nov., Magnifitermes krishnai gen. et sp. nov. and Mastotermes myanmarensis sp. nov. These descriptions provide significant morphological evidence to discuss the placement of the genus Anisotermes, confidently place the new genera and confirm the monophyly of Mastotermitidae. The diversity of Cretaceous isopterans, in light of the biology of their extant representatives, is used to discuss palaeoecological implications and highlights the radiation of early diverged Isoptera in the complex Cretaceous ecosystem. The validity of the species Meiatermes cretacicus is discussed.

Abstract
In several insect eusocial lineages, e.g., some aphids, thrips, ants, some stingless bees, and termites, task specialization is brought to its climax with a sterile soldier caste solely devoted to colony defense. In Isoptera, while the reproductives are defenseless, the soldiers have unique morpho-physiological specializations whose origin and evolution remain unresolved. Here we report on two instances of Cretaceous fossil termite reproductives belonging to different families († Valkyritermes inopinatus gen. et sp. nov. and an unpublished specimen from the Crato Formation), with intriguing phragmotic soldier-like heads and functional wings. These individuals, herein called Valkyries, are the first termite reproductives known with defensive features and suggest that phragmosis arose at least in the Early Cretaceous. Valkyries resemble modern neotenic soldiers except for their complete wings. Their discovery supports the hypothesis that the division between reproductive (indicated by the winged condition of Valkyries) and defensive tasks (indicated by the phragmotic head) has not always been complete in termite history. We explore two alternative scenarios regarding the origin of Valkyries (i.e., relatively recent and convergent origins vs. plesiomorphic condition) and discuss how they might relate to the development of soldiers. We argue that, in both cases, Valkyries likely evolved to face external threats, a selective pressure that could also have favored the origin of soldiers from helpers. Valkyries highlight the developmental flexibility of termites and illustrate the tortuous paths that evolution may follow.

Abstract
The Orphée reactor, located at the CEA Saclay near Paris, that was used to produce neutrons for scattering experiments over the past four decades has been stopped definitively in October 2019. The Laboratoire Léon Brillouin, the laboratory that operated the diffractometers and spectrometers around the Orphée reactor, is studying the possibility to build a compact Neutron Source to keep offering neutron beams to the French neutron scattering community. The efficient use of a pulsed source requires neutron instrumentation using Time-of-Flight (TOF) principles.The transfer of NSE spectrometer from continuous to pulse source requires the change of monochromatic neutron beam spin-echo technique to the TOF one. Here we report a successful attempt of adaptation of the Neutron Resonance Spin-Echo spectrometer MUSES (G1bis) to a pulsed source with a frequency of 20 Hz and a duty cycle of roughly 5 %.

Abstract
Glycerol, a by-product of the biofuel industry is transformed into l-carnitine when the soil microbe Pseudomonas fluorescens is cultured in a phosphate-limited mineral medium (LP). Although the biomass yield was similar to that recorded in phosphate-sufficient cultures (HP), the rate of growth was slower. Phosphate was completely consumed in the LP cultures while in the HP media, approximately 35 % of the initial phosphate was detected at stationary phase of growth. The enhanced production of α-ketoglutarate (KG) in HP cultures supplemented with manganese was recently reported (Alhasawi et al., 2017). l-carnitine appeared to be a prominent metabolite in the spent fluid while the soluble cellular-free extract was characterized with peaks attributable to lysine, γ-butyrobetaine (GB), acetate and succinate in the LP cultures. Upon incubation with glycerol and NH4Cl, the resting cells readily secreted l-carnitine and revealed the presence of such precursors like GB, lysine and methionine involved in the synthesis of this trimethylated moiety. Functional proteomic studies of select enzymes participating in tricarboxylic acid cycle (TCA), oxidative phosphorylation (OP), glyoxylate cycle and l-carnitine synthesis revealed a major metabolic reconfiguration evoked by phosphate stress. While isocitrate dehydrogenase-NAD+ dependent (ICDH-NAD+) and Complex I were markedly diminished, the activities of γ-butyrobetaine aldehyde dehydrogenase (GBADH) and l-carnitine dehydrogenase (CDH) were enhanced. Real-time quantitative polymerase chain reaction (RT-qPCR) analyses pointed to an increase in transcripts of the enzymes γ-butyrobetaine dioxygenase (bbox1), S-adenosylmethionine synthase (metK) and l-carnitine dehydrogenase (lcdH). The l-carnitine/γ-butyrobetaine antiporter (caiT) was enhanced more than 400-fold in the LP cultures compared to the HP controls. This metabolic reprogramming modulated by phosphate deprivation may provide an effective technology to transform glycerol, an industrial waste into valuable l-carnitine.

Using a fossilized birth–death model, a new phylogeny of the superfamily Evanioidea (including ensign wasps, nightshade wasps and hatchet wasps) is proposed, with estimates of divergence times for its constitutive families and for corroborating the monophyly of Evanioidea. Additionally, our Bayesian analyses demonstrate the monophyly of †Anomopterellidae, †Othniodellithidae, †Andreneliidae, Aulacidae, Gasteruptiida and Evaniidae, whereas †Praeaulacidae and †Baissidae appear to be paraphyletic. Vectevania vetula and Hyptiogastrites electrinus are transferred to Aulacidae. We estimate the divergence time of Evanioidea to be in the Late Triassic (~203 Mya). Additionally, three new othniodellithid wasps are described and figured from mid-Cretaceous Burmese amber as the new genus Keratodellitha, with three new species: Keratodellitha anubis sp. nov., Keratodellitha basilisci sp. nov. and Keratodellitha kirin sp. nov. We also document a temporal shift in relative species richness between Ichneumonoidea and Evanioidea.

Abstract
Variations of speciation and extinction rates determine the fate of clades through time. Periods of high diversification and extinction (possibly mass-extinction events) can punctuate the evolutionary history of various clades, but they remain loosely defined for many biological groups, especially nonmarine invertebrates like insects. Here, we examine whether the cockroaches, mantises and termites (altogether included in Dictyoptera) have experienced episodic pulses of speciation or extinction and how these pulses may be associated with environmental fluctuations or mass extinctions. We relied on molecular phylogeny and fossil data to shed light on the times and rates at which dictyopterans diversified. The diversification of Dictyoptera has alternated between (i) periods of high diversification in the late Carboniferous, Early-Middle Triassic, Early Cretaceous and middle Palaeogene, and (ii) periods of high extinction rates particularly at the Permian-Triassic boundary, but not necessarily correlated with the major global biodiversity crises as in the mid-Cretaceous. This study advocates the importance of analyzing, when possible, both molecular phylogeny and fossil data to unveil diversification and extinction periods for a given group. The causes and consequences of extinction must be studied beyond mass-extinction events alone to gain a broader understanding of how clades wax and wane.

Abstract
α-Ketoglutarate (AKG) also known as 2-oxoglutarate is an essential metabolite in virtually all organisms as it participates in a variety of biological processes including anti-oxidative defence, energy production, signalling modules, and genetic modification. This keto-acid also possesses immense commercial value as it is utilized as a nutritional supplement, a therapeutic agent, and a precursor to a variety of value-added products such as ethylene and heterocyclic compounds. Hence, the generation of KG in a sustainable and environmentally-neutral manner is a major ongoing research endeavour. In this mini-review, the enzymatic systems and the metabolic networks mediating the synthesis of AKG will be described. The importance of such enzymes as isocitrate dehydrogenase (ICDH), glutamate dehydrogenase (GDH), succinate semialdehyde dehydrogenase (SSADH) and transaminases that directly contribute to the formation of KG will be emphasized. The efficacy of microbial systems in providing an effective platform to generate this moiety and the molecular strategies involving genetic manipulation, abiotic stress and nutrient supplementation that result in the optimal production of AKG will be evaluated. Microbial systems and their components acting via the metabolic networks and the resident enzymes are well poised to provide effective biotechnological tools that can supply renewable AKG globally.

Abstract
Although French Guiana is one of the greatest hotspots of cockroach biodiversity on Earth, there are still undocumented species. From both newly collected and museum specimens, we provide species descriptions for Buboblatta vlasaki sp. nov., Lamproblatta antoni sp. nov., and Euhypnorna bifuscina sp. nov. and report new geographic records for species in the genera Epilampra Burmeister, Euphyllodromia Shelford, Ischnoptera Burmeister, and Euhypnorna Hebard. Finally, we update the checklist of species known from the region to 163 total species records from French Guiana, making it the second greatest hotspot of known cockroach biodiversity on Earth.

Abstract
Phylogenetic relationships among subgroups of cockroaches and termites are still matters of debate. Their divergence times and major phenotypic transitions during evolution are also not yet settled. We addressed these points by combining the first nuclear phylogenomic study of termites and cockroaches with a thorough approach to divergence time analysis, identification of endosymbionts, and reconstruction of ancestral morphological traits and behaviour. Analyses of the phylogenetic relationships within Blattodea robustly confirm previously uncertain hypotheses such as the sister-group relationship between Blaberoidea and remaining Blattodea, and Lamproblatta being the closest relative to the social and wood-feeding Cryptocercus and termites. Consequently, we propose new names for various clades in Blattodea: Cryptocercus + termites = Tutricablattae; Lamproblattidae + Tutricablattae = Kittrickea; and Blattoidea + Corydioidea = Solumblattodea. Our inferred divergence times contradict previous studies by showing that most subgroups of Blattodea evolved in the Cretaceous, reducing the gap between molecular estimates of divergence times and the fossil record. On a phenotypic level, the blattodean ground-plan is for egg packages to be laid directly in a hole while other forms of oviposition, including ovovivipary and vivipary, arose later. Finally, other changes in egg care strategy may have allowed for the adaptation of nest building and other novelties.

Abstract
Primary biodiversity data represent the fundamental elements of any study in systematics and evolution. They are, however, no longer gathered as they used to be and the mass-production of observation-based (OB) occurrences is overthrowing the collection of specimen-based (SB) occurrences. Although this change in practice is a major upheaval with significant consequences in the study of biodiversity, it remains understudied and has not attracted yet the attention it deserves. Analyzing 536 million occurrences from the Global Biodiversity Information Facility (GBIF) mediated data, we show that this spectacular change affects the 24 eukaryote taxonomic classes we targeted: from 1970 to 2016 the proportion of occurrences marked as traceable to tangible material (i.e., SB occurrences) fell from 68% to 18%; moreover, most of those specimen based-occurrences cannot be readily traced back to a specimen because the necessary information is missing. Ethical, practical or legal reasons responsible for this shift are known, and this situation appears unlikely to be reversed. Still, we urge scholars to acknowledge this dramatic change, embrace it and actively deal with it. Specifically, we emphasize why SB occurrences must be gathered, as a warrant to allow both repeating evolutionary studies and conducting rich and diverse investigations. When impossible to secure, voucher specimens must be replaced with OB occurrences combined with ancillary data (e.g., pictures, recordings, samples, DNA sequences). Ancillary data are instrumental for the usefulness of biodiversity occurrences and we show that, despite improving technologies to collate them, they remain rarely shared. The consequences of such a change are not yet clear but we advocate collecting material evidence or ancillary data to ensure that primary biodiversity data collected lately do not partly become obsolete when doubtful.

Eusociality, Darwin's special difficulty, has been widely investigated but remains a topic of great debate in organismal biology. Eusocial species challenge existing theories, and the impact of highly integrated societies on diversification dynamics is controversial with opposing assertions and hypotheses in the literature. Here, using phylogenetic approaches in termites-the first group that has evolved eusociality-we assessed the fundamental prediction that eusocial lineages have higher diversification rates than non-eusocial clades. We found multiple lines of evidence that eusociality provided higher diversification as compared to non-eusociality. This is particularly exacerbated for eusocial species with "true" workers as compared to species with "false" workers. Because most species with "true" workers have an entirely prokaryotic microbiota, the latter feature is also related to higher diversification rates, but it should be investigated further, notably in relation to angiosperm diversification. Overall, this study suggests that societies with "true" workers are not only more successful at ecological timescales but also over millions of years, which further implies that both organism- and species-level traits act on species selection.

Despite multiple studies and advances, sociality still puzzles evolutionary biologists in numerous ways, which might be partly addressed with the advent of sociogenomics. In insects, the majority of sociogenomic studies deal with Hymenoptera, one of the two groups that evolved eusociality with termites. But, to fully grasp the evolution of sociality, studies must obviously not restrict to eusocial lineages. Multiple kinds of social system transitions have been recorded and they all bring complementary insights. For instance, cockroaches, the closest relatives to termites, display a wide range of social interactions and evolved convergently subsocial behaviors (i.e., brood care). In this context, we emphasize the need for natural history, taxonomic, and phylogenetic studies. Natural history studies provide the foundations on which building hypotheses, whereas taxonomy provides the taxa to sample to test these hypotheses, and phylogenetics brings the historical framework necessary to test evolutionary scenarios of sociality evolution.

Abstract
Assessing support for molecular phylogenies is difficult because the data is heterogeneous in quality and overwhelming in quantity. Traditionally, node support values (bootstrap frequency, Bayesian posterior probability) are used to assess confidence in tree topologies. Other analyses to assess the quality of phylogenetic data (e.g. Lento plots, saturation plots, trait consistency) and the resulting phylogenetic trees (e.g. internode certainty, parameter permutation tests, topological tests) exist but are rarely applied. Here we argue that a single qualitative analysis is insufficient to assess support of a phylogenetic hypothesis and relate data quality to tree quality. We use six molecular markers to infer the phylogeny of Blattodea and apply various tests to assess relationship support, locus quality, and the relationship between the two. We use internode-certainty calculations in conjunction with bootstrap scores, alignment permutations, and an approximately unbiased (AU) test to assess if the molecular data unambiguously support the phylogenetic relationships found. Our results show higher support for the position of Lamproblattidae, high support for the termite phylogeny, and low support for the position of Anaplectidae, Corydioidea and phylogeny of Blaberoidea. We use Lento plots in conjunction with mutation-saturation plots, calculations of locus homoplasy to assess locus quality, identify long branch attraction, and decide if the tree's relationships are the result of data biases. We conclude that multiple tests and metrics need to be taken into account to assess tree support and data robustness.

Abstract
Long-distance acoustic signals are widely used in animal communication systems and, in many cases, are essential for reproduction. The acoustic adaptation hypothesis (AAH) implies that acoustic signals should be selected for further transmission and better content integrity under the acoustic constraints of the habitat in which they are produced. In this study, we test predictions derived from the AAH in frogs. Specifically, we focus on the difference between torrent frogs and frogs calling in less noisy habitats. Torrents produce sounds that can mask frog vocalizations and constitute a major acoustic constraint on call evolution. We combine data collected in the field, material from scientific collections and the literature for a total of 79 primarily Asian species, of the families Ranidae, Rhacophoridae, Dicroglossidae and Microhylidae. Using phylogenetic comparative methods and including morphological and environmental potential confounding factors, we investigate putatively adaptive call features in torrent frogs. We use broad habitat categories as well as fine-scale habitat measurements and test their correlation with six call characteristics. We find mixed support for the AAH. Spectral features of torrent frog calls are different from those of frogs calling in other habitats and are related to ambient noise levels, as predicted by the AAH. However, temporal call features do not seem to be shaped by the frogs' calling habitats. Our results underline both the complexity of call evolution and the need to consider multiple factors when investigating this issue.

Abstract
For a long time, New Caledonia was considered a continental island, a fragment of Gondwana harbouring old clades that originated by vicariance and so were thought to be locally ancient. Recent molecular phylogenetic studies dating diversification and geological data indicating important events of submergence during the Paleocene and Eocene (until 37 Ma) brought evidence to dismiss this old hypothesis. In spite of this, some authors still insist on the idea of a local permanence of a Gondwanan biota, justifying this assumption through a complex scenario of survival by hopping to and from nearby and now-vanished islands. Based on a comprehensive review of the literature, we found 40 studies dating regional clades of diverse organisms and we used them to test the hypothesis that New Caledonian and inclusive Pacific island clades are older than 37 Ma. The results of this meta-analysis provide strong evidence for refuting the hypothesis of a Gondwanan refuge with a biota that originated by vicariance. Only a few inclusive Pacific clades (6 out of 40) were older than the oldest existing island. We suggest that these clades could have extinct members either on vanished islands or nearby continents, emphasizing the role of dispersal and extinction in shaping the present-day biota.

Abstract
Although acoustic signals are important for communication in many taxa, signal propagation is affected by environmental properties. Strong environmental constraints should drive call evolution, favoring signals with greater transmission distance and content integrity in a given calling habitat. Yet, few empirical studies have verified this prediction, possibly due to a shortcoming in habitat characterization, which is often too broad. Here we assess the potential impact of environmental constraints on the evolution of advertisement call in four groups of torrent-dwelling frogs in the family Ranidae. We reconstruct the evolution of calling site preferences, both broadly categorized and at a finer scale, onto a phylogenetic tree for 148 species with five markers (∼3600 bp). We test models of evolution for six call traits for 79 species with regard to the reconstructed history of calling site preferences and estimate their ancestral states. We find that in spite of existing morphological constraints, vocalizations of torrent-dwelling species are most probably constrained by the acoustic specificities of torrent habitats and particularly their high level of ambient noise. We also show that a fine-scale characterization of calling sites allows a better perception of the impact of environmental constraints on call evolution.

Abstract
Understanding the origin and diversification of organisms requires a good phylogenetic estimate of their age and diversification rates. This estimate can be difficult to obtain when samples are limited and fossil records are disputed, as in Dictyoptera. To choose among competing hypotheses of origin for dictyopteran suborders, we root a phylogenetic analysis (~800 taxa, 10 kbp) within a large selection of outgroups and calibrate datings with fossils attributed to lineages with clear synapomorphies. We find the following topology: (mantises, (other cockroaches, (Cryptocercidae, termites)). Our datings suggest that crown-Dictyoptera-and stem-mantises-would date back to the Late Carboniferous (~ 300 Mya), a result compatible with the oldest putative fossil of stem-dictyoptera. Crown-mantises, however, would be much more recent (~ 200 Mya; Triassic/Jurassic boundary). This pattern (i.e., old origin and more recent diversification) suggests a scenario of replacement in carnivory among polyneopterous insects. The most recent common ancestor of (cockroaches + termites) would date back to the Permian (~275 Mya), which contradicts the hypothesis of a Devonian origin of cockroaches. Stem-termites would date back to the Triassic/Jurassic boundary, which refutes a Triassic origin. We suggest directions in extant and extinct species sampling to sharpen this chronological framework and dictyopteran evolutionary studies.

Abstract
Few studies have assessed the relative importance of morphological, ecological and phylogenetic factors in the evolution of social behaviour. We examine the role of these factors in social evolution among blaberid cockroaches. We first analyse and compare behavioural interactions in 13 species. We then ask how the nature of these interactions relates to body shape, phylogeny and habitat. We showed that, although these cockroaches display diverse behavioural interactions, a structure in these data exists with some species clustering together. We found that similarity in social interactions was related to species body shape, but not to ecology or phylogenetic relationships. We suggest that body shape plays an important role in the evolution of social behaviour and that this factor should be investigated further in future analyses.

Abstract
Termites are highly eusocial insects with a caste polyphenism (i.e., discontinuous morphological differences between castes) and elaborated behaviors. While the developmental pathways leading to caste occurrence are well-known in many species, the evolutionary origin of these pathways is still obscure. Recent molecular phylogenetic studies suggest multiple independent origins of sterile castes in termites, reviving a 30 years old debate. We demonstrate here that diploid sterile castes ("true" workers) evolved several times independently in this group and that this caste was lost at least once in a lineage with developmentally more flexible workers called pseudergates or "false" workers. We also infer that flexibility in post-embryonic development was acquired multiple times independently during termite evolution. We suggest that focusing on detailed developmental pathways in phylogenetic analyses is essential for elucidating the origin of caste polyphenism in termites.

Abstract
We describe here a co-occurrence (i.e. a syninclusion) of ants and termites in a piece of Mexican amber (Totolapa deposit, Chiapas), whose importance is two-fold. First, this finding suggests at least a middle Miocene antiquity for the modern, though poorly documented, relationship between Azteca ants and Nasutitermes termites. Second, the presence of a Neivamyrmex army ant documents an in situ raiding behaviour of the same age and within the same community, confirmed by the fact that the army ant is holding one of the termite worker between its mandibles and by the presence of a termite with bitten abdomen. In addition, we present how CT-scan imaging can be an efficient tool to describe the topology of resin flows within amber pieces, and to point out the different states of preservation of the embedded insects. This can help achieving a better understanding of taphonomical processes, and tests ethological and ecological hypotheses in such complex syninclusions.

Abstract
Habitat characterisation is a pivotal step of any animal ecology study. The choice of variables used to describe habitats is crucial and need to be relevant to the ecology and behaviour of the species, in order to reflect biologically meaningful distribution patterns. In many species, acoustic communication is critical to individuals’ interactions, and it is expected that ambient acoustic conditions impact their local distribution. Yet, classic animal ecology rarely integrates an acoustic dimension in habitat descriptions. Here we show that ambient sound pressure level (SPL) is a strong predictor of calling site selection in acoustically active frog species. In comparison to six other habitat-related variables (i.e. air and water temperature, depth, width and slope of the stream, substrate), SPL had the most important explanatory power in microhabitat selection for the 34 sampled species. Ambient noise was particularly useful in differentiating two stream-associated guilds: torrents and calmer streams dwelling species. Guild definitions were strongly supported by SPL, whereas slope, which is commonly used in stream-associated habitat, had a weak explanatory power. Moreover, slope measures are non-standardized across studies and are difficult to assess at small scale. We argue that including an acoustic descriptor will improve habitat-species analyses for many acoustically active taxa. SPL integrates habitat topology and temporal information (such as weather and hour of the day, for example) and is a simple and precise measure. We suggest that habitat description in animal ecology should include an acoustic measure such as noise level because it may explain previously misunderstood distribution patterns.

Abstract
OBJECTIVE The aim of this study was to determine the effects of pharmacologically relevant concentrations of rhein (1,8-dihydroxy-3-carboxyanthraquinone) on the cell proliferation rate of human chondrocytes and synoviocytes. METHODS Cultures of human osteoarthritic synoviocytes and chondrocytes were incubated with 10(-6), 10(-5), and 10(-4) M rhein. [3H]thymidine incorporation was used to determine rhein proliferative effects after incubation periods of 24 h, 48 h, and 1 week. The cytotoxicity of the drug was assayed with a nonradioactive assay kit. Nuclear extracts were used to detect variations in cell-cycle proteins (p21, p27, and cyclin D1) by Western blotting. The effect of rhein on apoptosis was investigated by measurement of caspase-3/7 activity and DNA fragmentation. RESULTS Rhein was found to downregulate the proliferation rate of both chondrocytes and synoviocytes, two-fold for 10(-5) M rhein and five- to six-fold for 10(-4) M rhein. No cytotoxicity of the drug was observed. Rhein (10(-4) M) decreased caspase-3/7 activity and did not induce DNA fragmentation. Western blots showed that 10(-4) M rhein increased the expression of p21 and/or p27, but not that of cyclin D1. CONCLUSIONS Rhein has previously been shown to reduce the interleukin (IL)-1beta deleterious effects on osteoarthritis (OA) cartilage through inhibition of the expression of degrading enzymes. Here, rhein was also found to inhibit proliferation of both synoviocytes and chondrocytes, suggesting that the drug may decrease the development of the inflammatory synovial tissue that accompanies joint pathologies. Both its anti-catabolic and anti-proliferative effects may explain its beneficial effect in the treatment of joint diseases.

Abstract
A phylogenetic hypothesis of termite relationships was inferred from DNA sequence data. Seven gene fragments (12S rDNA, 16S rDNA, 18S rDNA, 28S rDNA, cytochrome oxidase I, cytochrome oxidase II and cytochrome b) were sequenced for 40 termite exemplars, representing all termite families and 14 outgroups. Termites were found to be monophyletic with Mastotermes darwiniensis (Mastotermitidae) as sister group to the remainder of the termites. In this remainder, the family Kalotermitidae was sister group to other families. The families Kalotermitidae, Hodotermitidae and Termitidae were retrieved as monophyletic whereas the Termopsidae and Rhinotermitidae appeared paraphyletic. All of these results were very stable and supported with high bootstrap and Bremer values. The evolution of worker caste and foraging behavior were discussed according to the phylogenetic hypothesis. Our analyses suggested that both true workers and pseudergates ("false workers") were the result of at least two different origins. Our data support a traditional hypothesis of foraging behavior, in which the evolutionary transition from a one-piece type to a separate life type occurred through an intermediate behavioral form.

Abstract
OBJECTIVE To determine the effect of avian chondroitin sulfate (CS) on interleukin-1beta (IL-1beta)-induced expression of genes related to catabolic, anabolic and inflammatory aspects in chondrocytes cultured in hypoxic alginate beads. DESIGN Articular chondrocytes from bovine metacarpal joint were isolated and cultured in alginate beads, using low oxygen atmosphere (5% O2). After 1-week exposure to CS (1, 10 and 100microg/ml), they were treated by recIL-1beta (10ng/ml) for 24 or 48h, in the presence of CS. RNA was extracted and used to determine, by quantitative reverse transcription-polymerase chain reaction, the steady-state levels of mRNAs encoding several genes related to anabolic, catabolic and inflammatory aspects. Glycosaminoglycan (GAG) synthesis was also assayed by 35S-sulfate incorporation. RESULTS CS decreased IL-1beta-induced expression of matrix metalloproteases-1, -3 and -13 and aggrecanases-1 and -2. It slightly enhanced the aggrecan core protein mRNA and the GAG synthesis. Inducible nitric oxide synthase (iNOS) and cyclooxygenase-2 (COX-2) mRNA levels were found to be reduced by CS treatment. However, no CS-induced decrease of NO was observed in IL-1beta-treated chondrocytes, whereas prostaglandin E2 production was diminished in correlation with the COX-2 mRNA amounts. Furthermore, CS was capable of counteracting IL-1beta-depressed expression of transforming growth factor-beta (TGF-beta) receptors. CONCLUSIONS CS can repress expression of genes encoding proteolytic enzymes involved in cartilage degradation. It also inhibits IL-1beta-induced expression of the pro-inflammatory genes iNOS and COX-2 and restores TGF-beta receptors I and II (TGF-betaRI and RII) mRNA levels. These data suggest that CS may exert both chondroprotective and anti-inflammatory limited effects on articular cartilage that could have long-term beneficial action on the osteoarthritic process.

Interleukin-1beta impairment of transforming growth factor beta1 signaling by down-regulation of transforming growth factor beta receptor type II and up-regulation of Smad7 in human articular chondrocytes. Abstract
OBJECTIVE Extracellular matrix deposition is tightly controlled by a network of regulatory cytokines. Among them, interleukin-1beta (IL-1beta) and transforming growth factor beta1 (TGFbeta1) have been shown to play antagonistic roles in tissue homeostasis. The purpose of this study was to determine the influence of IL-1beta on TGFbeta receptor type II (TGFbetaRII) regulation and TGFbeta1 responsiveness in human articular chondrocytes. METHODS TGFbeta1-induced gene expression was analyzed through plasminogen activator inhibitor 1 and p3TP-Lux induction. Receptor-activated Smad (R-Smad) phosphorylation, TGFbeta receptors, and Smad expression were determined by Western blotting and real-time reverse transcription-polymerase chain reaction techniques. Signaling pathways were investigated using specific inhibitors, messenger RNA (mRNA) silencing, and expression vectors. RESULTS IL-1beta down-regulated TGFbetaRII expression at both the protein and mRNA levels and led to inhibition of the TGFbeta1-induced gene expression and Smad2/3 phosphorylation. Moreover, IL-1beta strongly stimulated the expression of inhibitory Smad7. TGFbetaRII overexpression abolished the loss of TGFbeta1 responsiveness induced by IL-1beta. The decrease in TGFbetaRII required de novo protein synthesis and involved both the NF-kappaB and JNK pathways. CONCLUSION We demonstrate that IL-1beta impairs TGFbeta1 signaling through down-regulation of TGFbetaRII, which is mediated by the p65/NF-kappaB and activator protein 1/JNK pathways, and secondarily through the up-regulation of Smad7. These findings show that there is cross-talk in the signaling of 2 regulatory cytokines involved in inflammation.

Abstract
OBJECTIVE To determine the effects of rhein on the expression of matrix metalloproteinases (MMP-1, -3, 13) and ADAMTs 4, 5 (a disintegrin and metalloproteinase with thrombospondin type-I repeat)/aggrecanases-1, -2 in interleukin-1-stimulated bovine articular chondrocytes, and to investigate the signalling pathways involved in the effects of the drug on gene expression and cell proliferation. METHODS Bovine chondrocytes were treated with 10(-4) M rhein for 18 h, followed by 10 ng/ml IL-1Beta for 30 min (cytoplasmic extracts) or 24 h (RNA extraction and EMSA). mRNA was assessed by RT-PCR for the expression of MMPs and aggrecanases, and the phosphorylation of MAP kinases was studied by Western blotting. NF-kappaB and AP-1 DNA binding were determined by gel retardation assay. The effects of inhibitors of these signalling pathways were compared to those of rhein. The proliferation of human chondrocytes and synoviocytes treated with the drug was also investigated. RESULTS IL-1Beta-induced stimulation of the MMPs and aggrecanase-1 was markedly inhibited by rhein. The drug reduced IL-1Beta-induced NF-kappaB and AP-1 DNA binding, as well as the phosphorylation of ERK and JNK. Similar effects were produced by the specific inhibitors of these signalling pathways. In addition, rhein reduced the proliferation of both human chondrocytes and synoviocytes. CONCLUSION Our data indicate that rhein may reduce the deleterious effects of IL-1Beta on osteoarthritic cartilage through its effects on the ERK- and JNK-dependent pathways. Both its anti-catabolic and anti-proliferative properties may explain its value in the treatment of joint diseases.

Abstract
Cockroaches have always been used to understand the first steps of social evolution in termites because they are close relatives with less complex and integrated social behaviour. Termites are all eusocial and ingroup comparative analysis would be useless to infer the origin of their social behaviour. The cockroach genus Cryptocercus was used as a so-called "prototermite" model because it shows key-attributes similar to the termites (except Termitidae): wood-feeding, intestinal flagellates and subsocial behaviour. In spite of these comparisons between this subsocial cockroach and eusocial termites, the early and remote origin of eusocial behaviour in termites is not well understood yet and the study of other relevant "prototermite" models is however needed. A molecular phylogenetic analysis was carried out to validate a new "prototermite" model, Parasphaeria boleiriana which shows a peculiar combination of these key-attributes. It shows that these attributes of Parasphaeria boleiriana have an independent origin from those of other wood-eating cockroaches and termites. The case of P. boleiriana suggests that a short brood care was selected for with life on an ephemeral wood resource, even with the need for transmission of flagellates. These new phylogenetic insights modify evolutionary hypotheses, contradicting the assumption made with Cryptocercus model that a long brood care is necessary for cooperation between broods in the "shift-in-dependent-care" hypothesis. An ephemeral wood resource is suggested to prompt generation overlap and the evolution of cooperation, even if brood care is shortened.

Abstract
The cytotoxic effects of cisplatin, cis-diamminedichloroplatinum(II), are generally ascribed to the formation of DNA adducts. Several in vitro as well as in vivo studies showed that cisplatin binds preferentially to guanines belonging to (G)(n) sequences (n > or = 2). After mono- or diaquation of cisplatin, giving the cationic complexes cis-[PtCl(NH(3))(2)(H(2)O)](+) and cis-[Pt(NH(3))(2)(H(2)O)(2)](2+), DNA platination occurs in two steps: the cationic complex gives an outersphere association with DNA and the actual coordination then occurs by substitution of one aqua ligand by guanine-N7. For a better understanding of the (G)(n) selectivity of cisplatin giving the biologically active adducts, also necessary for the conception of new platinum drugs, the respective contribution of the outersphere association and actual guanine platination must be investigated. To check the role of outersphere association in the overall platination process, we used electrospray mass spectrometry (ESMS) to detect and quantify outersphere association between 20-mer oligonucleotides and platinum complexes. The 20-mer oligonucleotides were single- or double-stranded, with the same number of guanines either isolated or adjacent to each other. To deal only with outersphere association and check the influence of platinum ligands, the [Pt(NH(3))(4)](2+) and [Pt(py)(4)](2+) complexes were used. We characterized by ESMS all the different outersphere association species formed during titration of each oligonucleotide with the various platinum complexes and evaluated their affinity constants. The ESMS results demonstrate that the outersphere association depends on electrostatic interactions and on the ability of the platinum ligands to participate to hydrogen bonding, particularly within the duplex form.

Abstract
The hairpin-stabilized double-stranded oligonucleotides d(TATGGTATT4ATACCATA) (I) and d(TATAGTATT4ATACTATA) (II) were allowed to react with the three aquated forms of the antitumor drug cisplatin (cis-[PtCl2(NH3)2], 1) which are likely candidates for DNA binding, that is, cis-[PtC1(NH3)2(H2O)]+ (2), cis-[Pt(NH3)2(H2O)2]2+ (3), and its conjugate base cis-[Pt(OH)(NH3)2(H2O)]+ (4). The reaction between I and [Pt(NH3)3(H2O)]2+ (5) was also studied for comparison. All reactions were monitored by HPLC. The platination reactions of I and II were carried out in NaClO4 (0.1M) at 293 K and at a constant pH of 4.5 +/- 0.1 for 2, 3, and 5. The data relative to the platination by 4 were obtained from measurements in unbuffered NaClO4 solutions (0.1M) at a starting pH close to neutrality, where 3 and 4 are present in equilibrium. In this case, a fit function describing the pH-time curve allowed the determination of the actual concentrations of 3, 4, and the dihydroxo complex. The platination rate constants characterizing the bimolecular reactions between either I or II and 2, 3, and 4 were individually determined along with the rate constants for hydrolysis of the chloro-monoadducts and for the chelation reactions of the aqua-monoadducts. The reactivity of compounds 2-5, which have the general formula cis-[Pt(NH3)2(H2O)(Y)]2+/-, decreases in the order 3>4>5>>2, that is, Y= H2O > OH- >NH3 >> Cl-, which is the order of decreasing hydrogen-bond donating ability of Y. Deprotonation of 3 to 4 reduces the reactivity of the platinum complex only by a factor of approximately equals 2, and both complexes discriminate between the different purines of I and II in the same manner. Whereas 3 and 4 react approximately three times faster with the GG sequence of I than with the AG sequence of II, 2 shows a similar reactivity towards both sequences. In view of the well-established preferential binding of cisplatin to GG sequences of DNA in vivo and in vitro, this result suggests that the actual DNA platination species are derived from double hydrolysis of cisplatin.

Abstract
Both cisplatin and the estrogen receptor (ER) are known to bend DNA. The influence of the bending of sequences by the d(GpG)cisPt adduct binding of ER to estrogen response element (ERE)-like sequences was examined. Three ERE-like oligonucleotides with different affinities for ER and which include a GG in the linker sequence were designed in order to form a single central d(GpG)cisPt adduct. Using electrophoretic mobility shift assay and Scatchard analysis, it was shown that the presence of a single d(GpG)cisPt adduct in the linker sequence decreases the ER affinity for DNA. These results do not support a critical role of a DNA bend in the initial recognition of ERE by ER. Then, the platination of DNA outside of the ERE half-sites decreases the interaction of ER with ERE.
