Biomarkers of selenium status in the Amazonian context: blood, urine and sequential hair segments

Selenium (Se) is an essential element and deficit or excess of dietary Se is associated with health disorders. Relatively elevated Se levels have been reported in the Brazilian Amazon, where there are also important annual variations in the availability of different foods. The present study was conducted among six riparian communities of the Tapajós River to evaluate seasonal variations in blood and sequential hair cm Se concentrations, and to examine the relationships between Se in blood and hair, and blood and urine. Two cross-sectional studies were conducted, at the descending water (DWS, n=259) and the rising water (RWS, n=137) seasons, with repeated measures for a subgroup (n=112). Blood Se (B-Se), hair Se (H-Se) and urine Se (U-Se) were determined. Match-paired analyses were used for seasonal comparisons and the method of best fit was used to describe the relationships between biomarkers. B-Se levels presented a very large range (142-2447 microg/l) with no overall seasonal variation (median 284 and 292 microg/l, respectively). Sequential analysis of 13 cm hair strands showed significant variations over time: Se concentrations at the DWS were significantly lower compared with the rising water season (medians: 0.7 and 0.9 microg/g; ranges: 0.2-4.3 microg/g and 0.2-5.4 microg/g, respectively). At both seasons, the relationships between B-Se and H-Se were linear and highly significant (r(2)=67.9 and 63.6, respectively), while the relationship between B-Se and U-Se was best described by a sigmoid curve. Gender, age, education and smoking did not influence Se status or biomarker relationships. Variations in H-Se suggest that there may be seasonal availability of Se sources in local food. For populations presenting a large range and/or elevated Se exposure, sequential analyses of H-Se may provide a good reflection of variations in Se status.

New evidence on the effects of tea on mercury metabolism in humans

The authors present the results of an experiment in which they explored the role of tea in human metabolic processing of methylmercury (MeHg) from fish consumption. The experiment involved 50 scientists from the Collaborative Mercury Research Network (COMERN) who agreed to eat fish for 2 daily meals for 3 consecutive days. Half of the participants also drank 6 cups of tea daily, starting a week before and continuing through the experiment. The authors calculated the total amount of MeHg that each participant ingested from (1) the measured mercury (Hg) level in fish and (2) the quantity of fish eaten, and compared it with the total increases of Hg and MeHg levels in participants' blood. Results indicated that the control group metabolized roughly 100% of the available fish MeHg, whereas the tea-exposed group showed blood levels of MeHg at more than 40% than that available in the fish provided, suggesting that an external MeHg pool supplied part of the measured blood MeHg increase. The authors conclude that tea may accelerate the enterohepatic MeHg cycle and contribute to a temporary bioamplification of MeHg in the bloodstream.

Methylmercury in water, seston, and epiphyton of an Amazonian river and its floodplain, Tapajós River, Brazil

Levels and accumulation of MeHg were characterized in filtered water, suspended organo-mineral matter, phytoplankton, zooplankton and epiphyton during the dry season and the wet season. In open water of the lentic and lotic ecosystems, the MeHg in filtered water (< 0.2 microm) was near or below the detection limit (< 0.02-0.03 ng/l). These concentrations represent < 5% of the Hgtot. content in filtered water. Inundated forests (Igapó) and macrophyte floating mats were the only sites where MeHg was significantly detected (0.07-0.24 ng/l), representing 3-22% of the Hgtot. in filtered water. MeHg concentrations in organo-mineral suspended matter (2-26 ng/g dry wt. representing 0.6-7.3% of Hgtot.) were correlated with the N content but not with the C content. Data suggest that MeHg enrichment of suspended matter is strongly influenced by the presence of degraded planktonic remains relatively rich in N and MeHg. In zooplankton, MeHg concentrations (20-140 ng/g dry wt.) increased from the dry season to the end of the wet season. This increase was followed by higher proportions of MeHg during the wet season in comparison to the dry season (15-40 to 50-70% of the Hgtot.). The epiphytic material collected from the roots of macrophyte floating mats contained 2-8.5 ng/g dry wt. of MeHg. The proportion of MeHg to Hgtot. in epiphyton (1.5-8.3%) correlated with its C and N contents. The data suggest a greater bioavailability of MeHg in the Tapaj6s River ecosystems due to the seasonal increase in water level and the consequent inundation of the floodplain. Inundation favours the development of large macrophyte floating mats which increases the bioavailability of epiphyton to herbivorous/detritivorous fish. The root zone of floating macrophytes and the flooded organic horizon of the Igapó forest are the only sites along the Tapajós River where significant MeHg can be detected in the water column and sediment. This new study supports the hypothesis that MeHg production and transfer to the first link of the food chain in Amazonian river systems is closely related to organic matter biogeochemistry in the floodplain environment.

Temporal and spatial influences of flooding on dissolved mercury in boreal reservoirs

Dissolved total mercury and methylmercury concentrations ([HgT]D and [MeHg]D, respectively) in natural lakes and reservoirs of varying age (2 months to 69 years) were monitored between 1993 and 1997, during different times of the year and at several sites within the same reservoir. Both HgT-D and MeHgD in flooded environments were significantly greater (Student's t-test, P < 0.001) than those determined for neighbouring lakes, with average concentrations of 2.35+/-0.85 ng(-1) (n = 79) vs. 1.51+/-0.43 ng l(-1) (n = 70) for HgT-D and 0.28+/-0.10 ng Hg l(-1) (n = 87) vs. 0.05+/-0.025 ng Hg l(-1) (n = 30) for MeHgD. Furthermore, the proportion of HgT-D in the methylated form was, on average, nearly four times greater in the reservoir sites as compared with those of the lakes (12% vs. 3.6%). Simple linear regressions used to compare [MeHg]D with nine water quality parameters suggest that factors controlling the presence of MeHgD are not the same in all flooded environments. Overall, our results demonstrate that [MeHg]D are higher in reservoirs as compared with natural lakes and that up to 18 years after reservoir construction [MeHg]D remain elevated as compared with background levels.
