Abstract
Cattle are a social species in which social mixing can induce physical and psychosocial stress; however, the impact of social mixing on cattle welfare is unknown. Two different sources of genetically similar Angus crossbred steers were transported to the same feedlot and assigned to a pen where they were either socially mixed or housed with individuals from their source herds. Social mixing did not impact average daily gains in pens, feed intake, or feed efficiency; pens of socially mixed steers were more active. Sources differed in their responses to social mixing. One source was unaffected, whereas social mixing negatively impacted productivity for the other source. Irrespective of social mixing, the sources differed in the amount of time per day they spent ruminating and drinking. Group analyses indicated that socially mixing two sources of feedlot steers did not negatively impact group productivity, yet the impacts that were observed at the individual level suggest that prior experiences may influence their ability to cope with social stress, emphasizing the importance of early-life experiences to long-term welfare and productivity. Social mixing was not universally detrimental to cattle welfare, and the source of cattle may have the greatest affect on their performance regardless of whether a social mixing event has occurred.

Abstract
Salmonella prevalence in bovine lymph nodes (LNs) varies due to seasonality, geographic location, and feedyard environment. The objectives of this study were to (1) establish prevalence rates of Salmonella in environmental components (trough water, pen soil, individual feed ingredients, prepared rations, and fecal samples) and LNs from weaning to finish in three feeding locations, and (2) characterize recovered salmonellae. Calves (n = 120) were raised at the Texas A&M University McGregor Research Center; in lieu of beginning the backgrounding/stocker phase, thirty weanling calves were harvested. Of the remaining ninety calves, thirty were retained at McGregor and sixty were transported to commercial feeding operations (Location A or B; thirty calves each). Locations A and B have historically produced cattle with relatively "low" and "high" rates of Salmonella-positive LNs, respectively. Ten calves per location were harvested at the conclusion of (1) the backgrounding/stocker phase, (2) 60 d on feed, and (3) 165 d on feed. On each harvest day, peripheral LNs were excised. Environmental samples were obtained from each location before and after each phase, and every 30 d during the feeding period. In line with previous work, no Salmonella-positive LNs were recovered from cattle managed at Location A. Salmonella-positive LNs (30%) and environmental components (41%) were most commonly recovered from Location B. Of 7 and 36 total serovars recovered from Salmonella-positive LN and environmental samples, respectively, Anatum was identified most frequently. Data from this study provide insight into Salmonella prevalence differences among feeding locations and the possible influence of environmental and/or management practices at each. Such information can be used to shape industry best practices to reduce Salmonella prevalence in cattle feeding operations, resulting in a decreased prevalence of Salmonella in LNs, and thus, minimizing risks to human health.

Abstract
Assessment of sustainability of a system is largely a forecasting problem, in which the likelihood of system persistence must be evaluated. The use of systems thinking and systems analysis provides useful mechanisms for assessing sustainability in complex food animal production systems. Importantly, evaluation of the system also aids in the identification of variables highly correlated to persistence and ratios among stocks and outputs that can be useful for management. The complexity of the systems makes linear assessment of sustainability from gross resource use indicators tenuous, and likely to lead to false inference. Development of a framework for indicator development and assessment is critical to avoid unintended consequences of inadequate forecasts.

Abstract
In two sequential replicates (n = 90 and n = 96 feedlot finisher cattle, respectively) we measured the impact of an Enterococcus faecium-based probiotic (DFM) and an altered feedlot pen environment on antimicrobial resistance among fecal enterococci in cattle fed (or, not fed) the macrolide tylosin. Diluted fecal samples were spiral-plated on plain and antibiotic-supplemented m-Enterococcus agar. In the first replicate, tylosin significantly (p < 0.05) increased the relative quantity of erythromycin-resistant enterococci. This effect was diminished in cattle fed the DFM in conjunction with tylosin, indicating a macrolide susceptible probiotic may help mitigate resistance. A similar observed effect was not statistically significant (p > 0.05) in the second replicate. Isolates were speciated and resistance phenotypes were obtained for E. faecium and E. hirae. Susceptible strains of bacteria fed as DFM may prove useful for mitigating the selective effects of antibiotic use; however, the longer-term sustainability of such an approach remains unclear.

Abstract
Delivery of limit-fed, complete rations requires significant capital investment, and creates logistical challenges for producers. Deconstruction and separate delivery of roughage and concentrate portions of diets may decrease feeding cost. Two experiments were conducted to evaluate the potential of separately limit-feeding roughage and concentrate. In Experiment 1, 4 ruminally cannulated steers (371 ± 12 kg bodyweight) were used in a 4 × 4 Latin square to evaluate the effects of time of concentrate delivery in deconstructed diets. Intake was restricted to 80% of predicted NEm requirements of a diet consisting of wheat straw (35%), cracked corn (29%), and distillers' grains (27%) formulated to contain 1.58 Mcal NEm/kg. Treatments were: concentrate fed 2 h prior to wheat straw (-2S), concentrate and wheat straw fed as total mixed ration (TMR), concentrate fed 2 h after wheat straw (+2S), and concentrate fed 12 h after wheat straw (+12S). In Experiment 2, 95 mid- to late-gestation cows (503 ± 151 kg) were used in a 112-d trial to evaluate feeding system on cow performance. Cows were assigned to 1 of 12 pens. Treatments were limit-fed the complete diet from Experiment 1 (TMR), fed roughage and concentrate portions of the deconstructed TMR 12 h apart (SEP), and ad libitum bermudagrass hay (HAY). Bodyweight (BW), BCS, and back fat measures were collected every 28 d. In Experiment 1, treatment did not affect DM or OM digestion (P ≥ 0.88), rate of particulate passage (P ≥ 0.55), or ruminal DM fill (P ≥ 0.19). Fill averaged 3.8 kg DM. Nadir of ruminal pH occurred 4-8 h after concentrate was delivered, but mean ruminal pH was not different among treatments (P = 0.22) ranging from 6.4 to 6.6 for +2S and 12S, respectively. In Experiment 2, treatment did not affect final BW (518 kg; P = 0.72) or final BCS (5.6; P = 0.67), but limit-fed strategies tended (P = 0.06) to have greater final RE (137.1, 98.9, and -14.6 Mcal for TMR, SEP, and HAY, respectively). Delivering forage and concentrate separately did not change digestion, and timing of concentrate delivery had only minor effects on ruminal fermentation. Limit-feeding a TMR or separate delivery of roughage and concentrate sustained cow performance compared to ad libitum hay consumption.

Abstract
Maternal nutrient restriction during pregnancy alters fetal programming, which modifies the growth and health of the offspring in postnatal life. In cattle, nutrient restriction during pregnancy can be a result of environmental or economic factors, but little is known about how it alters the physiology of the fetus and affects future reproductive or growth efficiency. This study used female monozygotic twins, produced through in vitro fertilization and embryo splitting, to determine the effect of moderate maternal nutrient restriction on fetal development. Recipient Angus cross heifers pregnant with one twin were fed a diet meeting 100% National Research Council (NRC) total energy requirements (n = 4; control), whereas recipient heifers pregnant with the second twin were fed at 70% of NRC total energy requirements (n = 4; restricted) from gestational day (GD) 158 to GD 265 in Calan gate feeders. Recipient heifers were killed at GD 265. Change in maternal metabolic body weight was greater from zero in restricted heifers than controls (P < 0.05); restricted heifers lost weight during the nutrient restriction period. There was no difference in last rib back fat or rib eye area between groups (P > 0.10). There was no difference in fetal weight, uterine weight, or total placentome weight between groups (P > 0.10). The pancreas weight was reduced in restricted fetuses compared with control fetuses (P < 0.01), but there were no other differences in fetal organ weights (P > 0.10). Plasma insulin concentrations were reduced in restricted fetuses compared with controls (P < 0.01), but there was no effect of maternal diet on plasma glucose or glucagon concentrations in the fetus (P > 0.10). Histological analyses of the fetal pancreas revealed no differences in endocrine cell number or localization. Results indicate that a modest late gestation nutritional restriction impairs development of the fetal pancreas in the cow. Additional research will be needed to determine if these developmental changes lead to altered glucose and insulin homeostasis in the adult.

Abstract
ABSTRACT Managing the presence of Salmonella in ground beef has been an ongoing challenge for the beef industry. Salmonella prevalence can vary regionally, seasonally, and within the animal, making the development of interventions difficult. The objective of this study was to assess the efficacy of an autogenous Salmonella vaccine in mitigating Salmonella in lymph nodes (LNs) of feedlot cattle. An autogenous vaccine was developed using the most common Salmonella enterica serovars (Salmonella Kentucky, Salmonella Anatum, Salmonella Muenchen, Salmonella Montevideo, and Salmonella Mbandaka) identified from cattle managed at a South Texas feedlot with historically high Salmonella prevalence. Fifty-five heifers were selected for even distribution across five groups: (i) BASE, which received no autogenous vaccinations and were harvested after the stocker stage, (ii) CNTRL, which received no autogenous vaccinations, (iii) FARM, which received autogenous vaccinations at the ranch only, (iv) SPLIT, which received autogenous vaccinations at both the ranch and feedlot, and (v) YARD, which received vaccinations at the feedlot only. One heifer each from the BASE and CNTRL groups did not complete the study. All treatment groups except BASE were harvested after reaching market weight. Left and right superficial cervical and subiliac LNs from each carcass were collected and analyzed for Salmonella presence, and positive samples were serotyped. No salmonellae were recovered from LNs derived from BASE, FARM, SPLIT, or YARD groups. Cattle in the BASE group were expected to have a low occurrence of Salmonella based on previous research. However, the percentage of Salmonella-positive animals in the CNTRL group was 20.0% (2 of 10), which is lower than expected based on historical data from the same feeding location. There could be several causes of decreased Salmonella presence in the LNs of control cattle, creating an opportunity for future investigation into the development of preharvest interventions to combat Salmonella in feedlots. Abstract
A novel, non-terminal surgical procedure to remove a single placentome from the pregnant ewe for gene expression and histological analyses was recently developed in our laboratory. This technique allows for evaluation of nutritional insults on placental development at more than one stage of gestation using a single animal. Early attempts to develop a similar technique in cattle were met with complications due to inaccessibility of the gravid uterine horn because of its location and mass. One alternative is to collect a placentome from the contralateral uterine horn; however, the question remains as to whether gene expression varies among placentomes based on location relative to the fetus. Pregnant heifers were maintained on forage during early gestation and later moved into pens with a Calan gate system (American Calan, Northwood, NH). On gestational day (GD) 158, five heifers were assigned to receive a hay-based diet formulated to meet 100% of NRC requirements, and five heifers were fed 70% of NRC requirements until necropsy on GD244. At necropsy, a single representative placentome was selected for analysis from the antimesometrial side: (1) of the gravid uterine horn central to the amnion, (2) over the allantois immediately adjacent to the amnion, (3) in the tip of the gravid uterine horn, and (4) in the tip of the contralateral uterine horn. Mean placentome weight was greater (P < 0.05) for locations central to the amnion and allantois compared to locations within the tips of the ipsilateral and contralateral horns, respectively. Gene expression for angiogenic factors (FGF2, ODC1, VEGFA, and FLT1), nutrient transporters (SLC7A1 and SLC2A1), and factors associated with hormone action (ESR1, IGF1, IGFBP3, CSH1, and PAG1) were unaffected (P > 0.05) by dietary treatment or location of the placentome. Results indicate that location of the placentome in relation to the fetus does not impact gene expression, enhancing the efficacy of nonterminal methodologies for sampling gene expression in placentomes.

Abstract
Metabolizable energy (ME) is calculated from digestible energy (DE) using a constant conversion factor of 0.82. Methane and urine energy losses vary across diets and dry matter intake (DMI), suggesting that a static conversion factor fails to describe the biology. To quantify the effects of the forage-to-concentrate ratio (F:C) on the efficiency of conversion of DE to ME, 10 Angus steers were used in a 5 × 5 replicated Latin square. Dry-rolled corn was included in experimental diets at 0%, 22.5%, 45.0%, 67.5%, and 83.8% on a dry matter (DM) basis, resulting in a high F:C (HF:C), intermediate F:C (IF:C), equal F:C (EF:C), low F:C (LF:C), and a very low F:C (VLF:C), respectively. Each experimental period consisted of a 23-d diet adaption followed by 5 d of total fecal and urine collections and a 24-h gas exchange collection. Contrasts were used to test the linear and quadratic effects of the F:C. There was a tendency (P = 0.06) for DMI to increase linearly as F:C decreased. As a result, gross energy intake (GEI) increased linearly (P = 0.04) as F:C decreased. Fecal energy loss expressed as Mcal/d (P = 0.02) or as a proportion of GEI (P < 0.01) decreased as F:C decreased, such that DE (Mcal/d and Mcal/kg) increased linearly (P < 0.01) as F:C decreased. As a proportion of GEI, urine energy decreased linearly (P = 0.03) as F:C decreased. Methane energy loss as a proportion of GEI responded quadratically (P < 0.01), increasing from HF:C to IF:C then decreasing thereafter. The efficiency of DE to ME conversion increased quadratically (P < 0.01) as F:C decreased, ranging from 0.86 to 0.92. Heat production (Mcal) increased linearly (P < 0.04) as F:C decreased but was not different as a proportion of GEI (P ≥ 0.22). As a proportion of GEI, retained energy responded quadratically (P = 0.03), decreasing from HF:C to IF:C and increasing thereafter. DM, organic matter, and neutral detergent fiber digestibility increased linearly (P < 0.01) and starch digestibility decreased linearly (P < 0.01) as the F:C decreased. Total N retained tended to increase linearly as the proportion of concentrate increased in the diet (P = 0.09). In conclusion, the efficiency of conversion of DE to ME increased with decreasing F:C due to decreasing methane and urine energy loss. The relationship between DE and ME is not static, especially when differing F:C.

Abstract
A study was conducted to evaluate the effects of intake management and ionophore inclusion on diet utilization under managed intake conditions in beef cattle. Two experiments utilized common diets fed at 120% (H) or 80% (L) of maintenance with either 0 or 200 mg/d monensin in a factorial arrangement. Forty cows were fed for 56 d (Exp. 1) to evaluate effects on diet utilization and energy retention; diets were fed to 16 ruminally cannulated steers (Exp. 2) to determine effects on digestion, energy value, and ruminal fermentation. Cows fed H had greater body weight (BW) gain (P < 0.01) and retained energy (RE; P < 0.01), although estimated heat production was also greater (P < 0.01). Monensin had limited effects on overall BW gain (P = 0.97). Monensin had no effect on RE (P = 0.94) or calculated heat energy (HE; P = 0.53) despite effects on diet utilization observed in steers. In steers, L increased (P < 0.01) digestion of dry matter, organic matter, acid detergent fiber, and gross energy (GE) and reduced (P < 0.01) passage rate; monensin did not affect digestion (P > 0.15) but did reduce passage rate (P < 0.03). Monensin lowered (P < 0.01) acetate:propionate ratio and increased (P < 0.05) ruminal pH. Monensin did not alter feed required for maintenance; however, limit-feeding reduced apparent daily maintenance requirement to 62.85 kcal/kg BW0.75, a 26% reduction from model-predicted values.

Abstract
Bos indicus crossbred females had higher fecal eggs as calves than as yearlings. More Bos indicus background had higher eggs per gram of feces through 1 year of age. Cooperia and Haemonchus species predominated through 1 year of heifer age. Ostertagia and Trichostrongylus species were detected mostly after 1 year of age. Eggs per gram of feces correlated with few production traits of heifers.
Gastrointestinal nematodes (GIN) do not detrimentally affect cattle to the extent of small ruminants. However, they are developing resistance to drugs used to treat them. Genetic strategies to control the nematodes and/or their detrimental effects could be a sustainable alternative to treatment with drugs. An essential first step in development of such a strategy is characterization of nematode populations in commonly used breed types of cattle in local conditions. Fecal egg counts (FEC) were obtained every two months on a cohort of 53 crossbred Nellore-Angus heifers grazing Central Texas pastures from an average heifer age of 3 months to approximately 2 years of age. For 10 of those 12 sets of samples, coprocultures were set up to characterize gastrointestinal nematode species present. Heifers were ½ Nellore ½ Angus (n = 18) or ¾ Angus ¼ Nellore (n = 35). They were born in the spring of 2014 to cows that were from 3–5 years old. They were maintained as a group throughout weaning, postweaning, exposure to bulls as yearlings, and as pregnant cows through the birth of their first calves. An interaction of breed group with sampling time (P < 0.0001) highlighted favorable FEC of ¼ Nellore heifers as compared to ½ Nellore in all but two sampling times. Fecal egg count means were, in general, higher for heifers of both groups in sampling times up to one year of age. Season effects on FEC may be important, but the effect of age may have obscured their detection. There were few significant correlation coefficients for FEC traits with a variety of production traits of these females. Average FEC residuals were positively correlated (r = 0.28 and 0.41; P < 0.05) with winter coat shedding score evaluated at approximately 17 and 24 months of age. Residual correlations of average FEC with calf weaning weight and incidence of shedding with calf age at weaning (r> 0.3) may be indicative of the increased susceptibility of females that lactate heavily or longer to internal parasite infection. Proportions of GIN genera by sampling day differed from χ2 expectation (P < 0.0001). Cooperia and Haemonchus species were detected in large proportions in sampling dates that corresponded to heifers less than one year of age. Ostertagia and Trichostrongylus species predominated in sampling dates after heifers reached one year of age.

Abstract
Enterococci are included in the United States National Antimicrobial Resistance Monitoring System to track antibiotic resistance among commensal Gram-positive enteric bacteria, largely due to their high abundance in food animals and in retail meat. In the U.S. cattle industry, macrolides are used to prevent and control liver abscesses, which cause significant economic losses. Previous studies have suggested that feeding tylosin and the intensity of the pen environment, both expand and sustain respectively the prevalence of multidrug resistance among enterococci in feedlot cattle. This has led to research into alternative feed supplements and improved stewardship practices. In a randomized controlled trial, we measured the impact of a probiotic and an altered pen environment on antimicrobial resistance among faecal Enterococcus spp. in cattle fed tylosin. Supplementing cattle with an Enterococcus faecium and Saccharomyces cerevisiae-based probiotic yielded the isolation of E. faecium of the probiotic sequence type (ST296) from faecal and environmental samples in treatment groups, as well as from cattle and the manure pack in nearby pens. Of importance, the probiotic strain also was found in a desiccated and milled manure pack sample taken 120 days after the initial trial ended. Phylogenetic and SNP analyses revealed clonal survival and spread compatible with faecal-environmental-oral recycling of the probiotic strain within and among cattle and pens. The increase in prevalence of the ST296 strain occurred concomitant with a decrease in ST240, the dominant sequence type associated with ermB and tet(M) resistance genes in this trial. SIGNIFICANCE AND IMPACT OF THE STUDY: We demonstrate that a macrolide-susceptible probiotic Enterococcus faecium ST296 strain fed to beef cattle becomes fully embedded in the microbial community cycling of bacteria via faecal-environmental-oral transmission within and among feedlot pens. An initial investment in feeding the probiotic is thereby leveraged into expanding numbers of susceptible bacteria in cattle and their environment, even among those cattle fed tylosin.

Abstract
Feeding cattle in intensified settings allows cow-calf producers to decrease their reliance on grazed forage and utilize alternative feedstuffs. During times of intense management, diet type may alter energy utilization. Fourteen pregnant MARC III heifers (405 ± 44 kg BW) were used in a 180 d experiment to determine effects of diet type on nutrient and energy utilization. Heifers were randomly assigned to one of two treatments, a forage diet (FOR; 2.10 Mcal metabolizable energy [ME]/kg; 95.75% forage) or a concentrate diet (CONC; 2.94 Mcal ME/kg; 71% concentrate), and individually fed to meet maintenance energy requirements (0.135 Mcal ME/kg BW0.75). The CONC diet contained dry-rolled corn, corn stalks (10.16 cm grind size), soybean meal, corn silage (approximately 45% corn grain; stored in a plastic bag), dicalcium phosphate, urea, and a premix pellet; FOR contained alfalfa hay (harvested at mid-bloom), corn silage, dicalcium phosphate, and a premix pellet. Measurements of energy intake and digestibility were measured over a 4-d period on days 116, 172, and 235 of gestation. Using portable headbox calorimeters, measurements of O2, CO2, and CH4 gases were collected over a period of 24 h. Data were analyzed in a completely randomized design with diet as fixed effect. Dry matter and organic matter digestibility were greater for CONC than FOR (P < 0.01). Intake of gross energy (GE) and digestible energy (DE) were greater for FOR (P < 0.01), but by design, ME intake was not different between treatments (P = 0.26). Energy lost as methane (% of GE intake) was not different between treatments (P = 0.49). The ratio of ME to DE was greater for CONC (86.8 vs. 82.8; P = 0.01) than FOR. Heat production relative to ME was not different between treatments (P = 0.85). Maternal tissue energy did not differ and was 1.2 Mcal/d for CONC and 0.9 Mcal/d for FOR (P = 0.73). Greater nitrogen (N) consumption was observed for FOR (192.2 g/d) than CONC (134.0 g/d; P < 0.01), and retained N was greater for FOR than CONC (P < 0.01) on days 116 and 235 of gestation. Neither concentrate-based or forage-based diets affected body condition score (P = 0.26). Heifers fed concentrate-based diets retained more energy in part because they had larger calves, but this energy was not recovered in maternal tissue.

Abstract
Intensification of cow-calf production may provide a sustainable solution for meeting increasing beef demand in the face of diminishing resources. However, intensification with its greater reliance on cereal grains potentially decreases the upcycling of human-inedible protein into beef. A previously described model was used to evaluate cow-calf intensification on beef's ability to meet human protein requirements. Four scenarios were compared, based on a 1,000 cow herd: 1) Conventional cow-calf production system (0CON), 2) cows limit-fed in confinement for 4 mo after weaning (4CON), 3) cows limit-fed in confinement for 8 mo after breeding (8CON), or 4) cows limit-fed in confinement year-round (12CON). Changes were not made to either the stocker or feedlot segments of the beef value chain. Net protein contribution (NPC) was calculated by multiplying the ratio of human-edible protein (HeP) in beef produced to HeP in feed by the protein quality ratio. A NPC >1 indicates that the production system is positively contributing to meeting human requirements, whereas a NPC <1 indicates the sector or value chain is competing with humans for HeP. Methane was estimated based on proportion of forage in diet and total methane production was reported per kg HeP. In the cow-calf sector, HeP conversion efficiency (HePCE) decreased from 2,640.83 to 0.37 while methane production decreased from 4.53 to 1.82 kg/kg HeP produced as the length of intensification increased from 0CON to 12CON. Decreased HePCE resulted in NPC values for cow-calf sector of 8,036.80, 4.93, 2.19, and 1.28 for 0CON, 4CON, 8CON, and 12CON, respectively. Protein quality ratio of the entire beef value chain increased from 3.15 to 3.33, while HePCE decreased from 0.99 to 0.39 as length of intensification increased from 0CON to 12CON. For the beef value chain, NPC was 3.11, 2.30, 1.73, and 1.31 for 0CON, 4CON, 8CON, and 12CON, respectively. Across the value chain, confinement of cows for 12 mo decreased enteric methane from 3.05 to 1.53 kg/kg HeP (0CON and 12CON, respectfully). Additionally, profitability of the cow-calf operation decreased from $249.34 to $102.16 per cow as intensification increased. Of confinement scenarios, probability of loss to an operation was least (4%) for 4CON. Feed costs increased by $260.79 per cow for 0CON when drought conditions existed (0COND). Total methane production was reduced by intensification and none of the scenarios evaluated competed with humans for HeP.

Abstract:
Feedlot efficiency increases as technologies are adopted and new feed ingredients, especially byproducts, become available and incorporated into diets. Byproduct availability increased in response to the renewable fuels standard of 2005, creating substantial amounts of feedstuffs best used by ruminants. Cereal grains have been partially replaced with human-inedible byproducts, as they provide comparable levels of energy in cattle diets. To evaluate the effects of changes in diet and feedlot production practices on net protein contribution (NPC) and human-edible protein conversion efficiency (HePCE) across time, a deterministic NPC model was used. NPC was assessed for the feedlot industry using lot level production data from 2006 to 2017 for eight commercial feedlots. Ingredient and nutrient composition was collected for a representative starter and finisher diet fed for each year from each feedlot. NPC was calculated by multiplying human-edible protein (HeP) in beef produced per unit of HeP in feed by the protein quality ratio (PQR). Systems with NPC >1 positively contribute to meeting human protein requirements; NPC < 1 indicates competition with humans for HeP. NPC was regressed on year to evaluate temporal change in NPC. Feedlots were categorized as increasing NPC (INC; slope > 0) or constant NPC (CON; slope = 0) according to regression parameter estimates. Four feedlots were categorized as INC and four were CON. The rate of change in PQR was similar for CON and INC (P ≥ 0.79), although rates of change among INC and CON differed for byproduct and cereal grain inclusion (P ≤ 0.01) across years evaluated. Feedlots categorized as INC reduced HeP consumed by 2.39% per year, but CON feedlots did not reduce HeP consumed each year (0.28%). Cattle received and shipped by INC were lighter than those in CON feedlots (P < 0.01). Across years, INC produced more HeP (20.9 vs. 19.2 kg/hd) than CON (P < 0.01), and both feedlot types tended to improve HeP gained over time (0.1 kg per year; P = 0.10). Differences in slope over time for INC and CON were observed for conversion efficiency of HeP (P < 0.01). NPC increased 0.027 units per year for INC (P < 0.01) and was 0.94 in 2017. NPC by the feedlot sector improved from 2006 to 2017, decreasing the amount of human-edible feeds required to produce more high-quality protein from beef.

Abstract
Two experiments were conducted to measure efficiency of energy use in limit-fed cows. In Exp. 1, 32 pregnant, crossbred cows were used to examine the effects of dietary energy concentration and intake level on energy utilization and digestion. In a 2 × 2 factorial treatment arrangement, cows received diets formulated at either 1.54 Mcal NEm/kg high energy (H) or 1.08 Mcal NEm/kg low energy (L); amounts of each diet were fed at amounts to achieve either 80% (80) or 120% (120) of maintenance energy requirements. Fecal grab samples were collected on days 14, 28, 42, and 56 for determination of energy digestion and metabolizable energy (ME) intake. Acid detergent insoluble ash and bomb calorimetry were used to estimate fecal energy production. Cow body weight and 12th rib fat thickness were used to estimate body energy, using 8 different methods, at the beginning and end of a 56-d feeding period. Energy retention (RE) was calculated as the difference in body energy on days 0 and 56. Heat energy (HE) was calculated as the difference in ME intake and RE. Energy digestion increased (P = 0.04) with intake restriction. Cows consuming H tended to have greater (P = 0.08) empty body weight (EBW) gain than cows consuming L, but no difference was observed (P = 0.12) between cows fed 120 compared with cows fed 80. Estimates of HE were greater for L than H (P < 0.01) and greater for 120 than 80 (P < 0.01), such that estimated fasting heat production of H (57.2 kcal/kg EBW0.75) was lower than that of L (73.3 kcal/kg EBW0.75). In Exp. 2, 16 ruminally cannulated, crossbred steers were used to examine the effects of dietary energy concentration and intake level on energy digestion. Treatment arrangement and laboratory methods were replicated from Exp. 1. Following a 14-d adaptation period, fecal samples were collected, such that samples were represented in 2-h intervals post-feeding across 24 h. Diet × intake interactions were observed for nutrient digestibility. Energy digestibility was greater in steers fed H than in steers fed L (P < 0.01); however, digestibility of each nutrient increased by approximately 10% in steers fed H80 vs. those fed H120 (P ≤ 0.03); nutrient digestibility was similar among levels of intake in steers fed L (P = 0.54). These results suggest that intake restriction may increase diet utilization and that the magnitude of change may be related to diet energy density.

Abstract
The use of active dried yeast (ADY) in the diets of feedlot steers may improve feed efficiency, growth performance, and reduce days on feed. Strategic timing of ADY inclusion in the diet may increase feed conversion or aid in the dietary transition from growing to finishing diets. One hundred twenty steers, blocked by weight, were fed four diets for 164 d: grower (70 d), first transition diet (7 d), second transition diet for (7 d), and finisher (80 d) in a GrowSafe System. Four treatment sequences of ADY inclusion were evaluated in a Balaam's design where steers were fed a control diet before and after the grower phase (CC), control before and ADY after the grower phase (CY), ADY before and control after the grower phase (YC), and ADY before and after the grower phase (YY). A random coefficients model was used to evaluate the following variables of interest: feeding performance and growth traits, including biometric measurements and carcass ultrasound measurements, and carcass characteristics. Treatment was a fixed effect and block was a random effect. Treatment did not affect feeding performance or behavior (P ≥ 0.14). The rate of change of biometric measurements were not different (P ≥ 0.16) across treatment groups except for rib girth circumference, which was greater for the YY and CY groups intermediate for the CC group and least for the YC group (0.828 and 0.809 vs. 0.751 vs. 0.666 cm/d, respectively; P < 0.01). Faster growth rates of rib girth circumference resulted in larger final measurements for steers that were finished on ADY (P < 0.01). Ultrasound measurements (backfat, LM area, intra-muscular fat, and rump fat) were not different across treatments (P ≥ 0.15). However, there was a tendency for the YC group to have a slower rate of back fat deposition than other treatment groups (P = 0.09). Steers' final shrunk BWs did not differ (P = 0.61), but shrink percentage was greater for CC than for YY groups (3.7% vs. 2.7%, respectively; P = 0.05). Carcass characteristics were not different across treatments (P ≥ 0.20). Crude fat, CP, ash and moisture analyses of the 9th to 11th rib section were not different across treatments, and there was no difference in adjusted final shrunk BW (P ≥ 0.45). Feeding the ADY strain used in this study to growing and finishing feedlot steers increased rib girth circumference development rate and reduced shrink loss without affecting feeding behavior, feeding performance, or carcass characteristics.

Abstract
The objective of this trial was to determine the benefits of supplementing active dried yeast (ADY; 3 × 1010 CFU/d of Saccharomyces cerevisiae) in diets of growing and finishing steers on ruminal pH and liver health, and evaluate the relationship of these variables with performance traits. Growing beef steers (n = 120) were blocked by weight (i.e., heavy and light) and allocated to 1 of 4 pens in an automated feed intake monitoring system. Steers were fed either control (CON; no ADY) or ADY supplemented in 4 sequential diets: grower diet from days 0 to 70, 2 step up diets (STEP1 and STEP2) for 7 d each, and finishing diet from days 85 to 164. Indwelling rumen boli were administered to monitor rumen pH during days 56 to 106 during the dietary transition. An exchange of pen assignment, within block, occurred on day 70 resulting in 4 final treatment (TRT) assignments: steers fed CON before and after the exchange (CC; n = 30), steers fed CON before and ADY after the exchange (CY; n = 30), steers fed ADY before and CON after the exchange (YC; n = 30), and steers fed ADY (YY; n = 30). Ruminal parameters were analyzed as a randomized complete block design with repeated measures of day, diet and TRT as fixed effects, and block as random effects, using 2 approaches: preliminary analysis of the means or drift analysis (DA; units change from basal values over time). Ruminal pH duration (DUR) below 6.0 (P = 0.05) and 5.8 (P = 0.05) was greater for CY steers than CC steers. Acidosis bout prevalence (pH < 5.6 for 180 consecutive minutes; P < 0.01) and bout DUR (P = 0.05) were greater for CY than other TRT groups. The DA indicated that the ruminal pH variables range, variance, and amplitude of steers in the YC group drifted further from basal pH values than CY and YY steers during the dietary transition (P ≤ 0.02), indicating that removing ADY during the dietary transition was not favorable, but including ADY may reduce ruminal fluctuation. Steers with fewer days experiencing bouts (DEB) had numerically greater ADG (P = 0.11) and tended to have greater G:F (P = 0.06). Liver abscess severity negatively affected ADG (P = 0.04). However, liver abscess severity was not affected by DEB (P = 0.90). There is evidence to suggest that the addition of the specific ADY strain in the diets of beef cattle during the dietary transition may aid in ruminal stabilization, but our study did not find evidence that acidosis bouts were related to abscess prevalence or severity.

Abstract
The objective of this study was to determine if feeding monensin would improve diet digestion, energy and nitrogen balance in bred heifers receiving a limit-fed corn stalk-based diet. Sixteen pregnant Meat Animal Research Center (MARC) III composite heifers were used in a 161-d completely randomized design. Heifers were randomly assigned to one of two treatments, no monensin (CON) or 150 mg/d monensin (MON), with eight heifers in each treatment group. Heifers were limit-fed a corn stalk-based diet at 100% of MEm requirements. Effects of monensin on energy and nitrogen balance were determined via total fecal and urine collections and open-circuit respiration calorimetry. Total fecal and urine collection occurred on d 14, 42, and 161 of monensin feeding, and calorimetry measurements were made on d 0, 3, 14, 28, 42, and 161 of monensin feeding. DMI was not different (P = 0.94) for CON and MON heifers and, by design, increased (P < 0.01) from d 14 to d 161 of the trial to account for increasing fetal growth requirements. No differences (P = 0.91) in GE intake were observed between CON and MON heifers, and DE and ME intakes did not differ (P > 0.58) with monensin inclusion. DM, OM, NDF, and ADF digestion did not differ (P > 0.52) between treatments. Fecal, methane, urinary, and heat energy losses were not different (P > 0.16) for MON and CON heifers. Methane production was not different between treatments when expressed as daily liters of methane (P = 0.40); however, MON heifers produced 7% less (P = 0.03) methane per day than CON heifers when expressed as liters of methane produced on a metabolic body weight (MBW) basis. Furthermore, monensin had no effect (P = 0.36) on overall retained energy (RE). Nitrogen intake and excretion was not different (P > 0.13) between treatment groups. Results of this experiment indicate that adding monensin to limit-fed, corn stalk-based diets may not have a large effect on the energy and nitrogen balance of confined heifers.

Abstract
This study evaluated reproductive, maternal performance, and longevity traits of 143 F1 cows sired by Brahman (Br), Boran (Bo), or Tuli (T) bulls from Angus or Hereford cows from 1994 to 2011. Cow traits were measured at 7 yr of age in 1999 and 2000 for 1992- and 1993-born cows, respectively. From 2004 to 2010, excluding 2008, incisor condition (solid, broken, smooth) scores were assigned to cows remaining in production; scores were evaluated with two models. Broken and solid mouths were each assigned a score of "1" and smooth assigned "0"; Br-sired (0.76) and Bo-sired cows (0.71) had higher scores (P < 0.05) than T-sired cows (0.54). When solid mouths were scored 1 and smooth and broken scored 0, Br-sired cows (0.34) were higher than T-sired (0.01) (P < 0.05), and Bo-sired (0.23) cows were not different from either (P > 0.05). Age level of the cow within birth year was important for all modeled calf traits (P < 0.05). Birth weights were not different among cow inheritance (P > 0.05). Cow type influenced (P < 0.05) 205-d adjusted weaning weight of calves; Br-sired dams (228.1 ± 2.37 kg) produced the greatest weaning weight, followed by Bo-sired (213.7 ± 3.10 kg), and T-sired (201.6 ± 2.69 kg) dams (P < 0.05). Adjusted means for calving rate for Bo-sired (0.92 ± 0.02) cows were higher (P < 0.05) than Br-sired (0.86 ± 0.02) and T-sired (0.86 ± 0.02) cows. Adjusted mean weaning rate was greater (P < 0.05) for Bo-sired cows (0.86 ± 0.02) than for cows sired by Br (0.77 ± 0.02) bulls, but weaning rate for T-sired cows (0.80 ± 0.02) were similar (P > 0.05). Cow weight was greater (P < 0.05) for Br-sired cows (590.5 ± 8.35 kg) than for Bo-sired (505.8 ± 10.46 kg) or T-sired cows (508.5 ± 9.37 kg). BCS at weaning for 7-yr-old cows was similar (P = 0.08) for Br-sired and Bo-sired cows and lower for T-sired cows (P = 0.0005, condition scores 6.0, 6.3, and 5.8, respectively). Boran-sired cows were older when they were removed from the herd, on average (12.7 ± 0.74 y, P = 0.03) than T-sired (10.6 ± 0.61 y); Br-sired cow persistence was intermediate and not different (11.05 ± 0.60 y, P > 0.06) from the others. Boran-sired cows had higher calving and weaning rates and better mouth scores than the other groups; consequently, they had greater longevity as well. Boran-sired and T-sired cows were moderate in size and weighed less than Br-sired cows throughout the study. Tuli-sired cows weaned the lightest calves and had the most tooth deterioration as they aged.

Abstract
Beef cow stayability is a complex, economically important trait often used as an indicator of a cow's potential lifetime productivity. Stayability is defined as capability of a cow to maintain a perfect record up to 6 yr of age. This age is commonly cited as a financial break-even point, where initial costs of cow development and maintenance are recovered by her cumulative net income from yearly calf receipts. Later-maturing Bos indicus-Bos taurus crossbred cows may experience reproductive difficulty early in life but have a high potential for a long reproductive life span. It was the objective of this study to identify genetic variants associated with measures of beef cow stayability. A population of B. indicus-B. taurus crossbred cows (n = 305) from central Texas was used. Phenotypes for various measures of stayability to 6 yr of age were produced by artificially imposing five different culling criteria on data from the population. Cows were scored either as a 1 (indicating a perfect record through 6 yr) or a 0 (indicating failure at or before 6 yr), under each criterion. Genome-wide association studies (GWAS) were conducted for each criterion using univariate procedures and prefitting the fixed effect of cow contemporary group. SNP associations for two criteria surpassed the false discovery threshold of 0.15, when a cow was scored as 0 upon her first failure to wean a calf, regardless of reason, through 6 yr (criterion 2), and when a cow was scored as 0 upon her first failure to give birth to a calf, through 6 yr (criterion 3). Associated SNP were found on bovine chromosomes (BTA) 1, 2, 5, 9, 18, and 21 for criterion 2 and on BTA 1, 5, 11, 15, and 24 for criterion 3. A critical region on BTA 5: 43-50 Mb was identified for each criterion. Due to the similarities to prior work, the tendency for B. indicus cattle to experience reproductive difficulties early in life, and due to the large proportion of cows that left the herd at an early age under these criteria, these results suggest that the associations are likely driven by an early life trait such as age at puberty or rate of heifer development.

Abstract
We hypothesized that abomasal infusion of glucose would promote de novo fatty acid biosynthesis from glucose in vitro in bovine intramuscular (i.m.) and subcutaneous (s.c.) adipose tissues to a greater extent than ruminal infusion of acetate, propionate, or glucose. Angus crossbred steers (n = 24), 22 mo of age, were fitted with ruminal cannulas, and steers were adapted to another corn/sorghum finishing diet over a 2-wk period while recovering from the placement of the cannulas. After the adaptation period, the steers were fed the second finishing diet at 130% of their voluntary intake and were infused with isocaloric amounts (3.76 Mcal/d) of glucose, propionate, or acetate for 35 d. Glucose was infused either into the rumen or into the abomasum, whereas propionate and acetate were infused into the rumen. Acetate infusion decreased DM and DE intakes (P < 0.05). The 5th to 8th longissimus muscle section was removed immediately and transported to the laboratory within 10 min post-exsanguination in 38 °C, oxygenated Krebs Henseleit buffer containing 5 mM glucose and 5 mM acetate. Intramuscular and s.c. adipose tissues were dissected from the muscle and incubated in vitro in 5 mM glucose plus 5 mM acetate (containing [U-14C]glucose or [1-14C]acetate). Lipid content was lower (P = 0.04) in i.m. adipose tissue of the acetate-infused steers than in the other treatment groups, and i.m. adipocytes from acetate-infused steers were smaller (P = 0.01) than those from propionate-infused steers. The rate of incorporation of acetate into glyceride-fatty acids (GFA) in i.m. and s.c. adipose tissues was greater (P < 0.03) in steers receiving ruminal or abomasal infusions of glucose than in adipose tissues from steers infused with acetate. The greatest rates of GFA synthesis were observed in s.c. adipose tissue from steers infused ruminally with propionate or abomasally infused with glucose (P < 0.001). In i.m. and s.c. adipose tissues, the proportion of acetyl units from acetate incorporated into GFA was greater in steers receiving glucose infusion in the rumen or abomasum than in steers receiving acetate or propionate infusion (P < 0.05). Contrary to our hypothesis, abomasal glucose infusion did not promote greater fatty acid biosynthesis from glucose in i.m. adipose tissue than ruminal glucose infusion. However, glucose infusion caused the greatest production of acetyl units from acetate in i.m. and s.c. adipose tissues.

Abstract
A model was developed to estimate beef's contribution toward meeting human protein requirements using a summative model of net protein contribution (NPC) and methane production. NPC was calculated by multiplying the ratio of human-edible protein (HeP) in beef to the HeP in feedstuffs by the protein quality ratio (PQR). PQR describes the change in biological value of HeP that occurs when plant-derived HeP is converted to beef. An NPC > 1 indicates that the production system is positively contributing to meeting human requirements; systems with NPC < 1 reduce the net protein available to meet human requirements. Scenarios were arranged as a 2 × 2 factorial with two sets of dietary inputs and two sets of production parameters. Dietary inputs represented either inputs used in a previous report estimating HeP (previous diet; PD) or inputs more representative of conventional beef production systems (current diet; CD). Production parameters were either drawn from previous reports (previous parameters; PP) or chosen to characterize current industry standards (current parameters; CP). The HeP conversion efficiency (HePCE) for current industry diets and production parameters (CDCP) (kg HeP yield/kg HeP input) was greatest in the cow-calf sector (2,640.83) compared with stocker (5.22) and feedlot (0.34), and other scenarios followed a similar trend. In addition, the entire production system had an HePCE of 0.99 for CDCP; the previous model diets and production parameters (PDPP) scenario estimated HePCE to be 0.46, and other scenarios were in between. For the CDCP scenario, 56%, 10%, and 34% of the HeP were produced in the cow-calf, stocker, and feedlot sectors; PDPP was similar (59%, 13%, and 28%, respectively). PQR averaged 3.04, 3.04, and 2.64 for cow-calf, stocker, and feedlot sectors, respectively, indicating each sector enhances the biological value of the HeP fed. The NPC was greatest for the cow-calf sector (8,794), followed by the stocker and feedlot sectors (8.85 and 0.23, respectively). The entire beef value chain had a PQR of 2.68 and NPC ranged from 1.01 to 3.11, which correspond to PDPP and CDCP, respectively. Overall, 3.05 kg of CH4 were produced per kilogram HeP for CDCP and 2.58 for PDPP, with the cow-calf sector being greater than the feedlot sector (4.53 vs. 0.94 kg CH4/kg HeP, CDCP). Our results suggest that each individual beef sector and the entire value chain produce more high-quality HeP than is consumed in production. Accordingly, beef is a net contributor to meeting human protein requirements.

Abstract
The effects of 2 exercise regimes on cattle productivity, immune function, and behavior were evaluated against a control ( = 4 pens/treatment) using weaned -cross calves ( = 203) housed in drylots (16-18 calves/single sex pens). Three treatments were applied 3 times per week for 4 wk: 1) programmatic exercise (PRO), in which cattle and a stockperson walked in the alleyway behind their home pen for 20 min; 2) free exercise (FREE), in which cattle were moved into the drovers alley for 60 min, not exercised by a stockperson, and were allowed free access to their home pen and alleyway; and 3) control (CON), in which calves were removed from their home pen only for routine husbandry. Behavior observations were conducted on d -2 and -1 relative to treatment implementation (d 0) and on d 5, 6, 12, 13, 19, 20, 26, and 27. Instantaneous scan sampling was used to create behavioral profiles for cattle (posture: stand, lie, and walk; and behavior: feed, drink, and ruminate). Focal observations recorded the incidence of social behaviors (allogrooming, social play, and agonistic interactions) and animal-environment interactions (AEI; fencepost licking, rock eating, tongue rolling, and cross-suckling). Body weights, exit velocities, and antibody titers to a bovine viral diarrhea virus type 1b vaccine were measured on d -10, 10, and 28. A linear mixed model (PROC MIXED) was used to evaluate the impact of exercise treatment, sex, time, and their interactions on cattle behavior, health, and productivity. Statistical differences were not observed ( = 0.11) for overall ADG among cattle receiving FREE (1.00 kg ± 0.04) PRO (0.85 kg ± 0.04), or CON (0.86 kg ± 0.05) exercise treatments. Allogrooming ( = 0.05), lying ( < 0. 01), AEI ( < 0.01), rumination ( < 0.01), and agonistic interactions ( < 0.01) increased over time. Comfort-related behaviors (e.g., lying, rumination) increased over the evaluation period, suggesting that calves became acclimated to the environment. Exercise did not alter behaviors or vaccine response and did not reduce the performance of production-critical (e.g., feeding, resting, ruminating) behaviors.

Abstract
Peripheral lymph nodes (LNs) located in the fatty tissues of beef carcasses have been shown to harbor Salmonella and, thus, potentially contaminate ground beef. Salmonella prevalence within LNs is known to differ among feedlots. Two South Texas feeding operations (identified as locations A and B) known to harbor salmonellae in the feedlot environment, while historically producing cattle with opposing rates (one "high" and one "low") of Salmonella prevalence in LNs, were used in this study. To determine whether this difference was due to cattle source or factors associated with different stages of feeding, weanling steers of common and known origin were followed through normal feeding stages at both operations. Eighty Angus-sired beef steers were harvested at each of four feeding stages: 1, postweaning; 2, background or stocker; 3, 60 days on feed; and 4, 120 days on feed. Left and right subiliac and superficial cervical LNs ( n = 304) were collected from each carcass, and similar node types were pooled by animal ( n = 152). Results showed a difference ( P < 0.05) in prevalence of Salmonella in bovine lymph nodes between location A and location B and among feeding stages in location B. Salmonella was not isolated from any feeding stage 1 (postweaning) or location A LN samples. Within location B, there was an increase in Salmonella prevalence as cattle moved into later stages of feeding: at 22.2% (4 of 18), 77.8% (14 of 18), and 94.4% (17 of 18) for feeding stages 2, 3, and 4, respectively. Although the reasons for the differences seen between feeding operations and for increased Salmonella prevalence in LNs at later feeding stages remain unexplained, these results indicate that factors other than cattle source are likely influencing Salmonella prevalence in LNs.

Abstract
The size, support, and health of udders limit the productive life of beef cows, especially those with background, because, in general, such cows have a reputation for problems with udders. Genomic association studies of bovine udder traits have been conducted in dairy cattle and recently in Continental European beef breeds but not in cows with background. The objective of this study was to determine associations of SNP and udder support scores, teat length, and teat diameter in half (Nellore), half (Angus) cows. Udders of cows ( = 295) born from 2003 to 2007 were evaluated for udder support and teat length and diameter ( = 1,746 records) from 2005 through 2014. These included a subjective score representing udder support (values of 1 indicated poorly supported, pendulous udders and values of 9 indicated very well-supported udders) and lengths and diameters of individual teats in the 4 udder quarters as well as the average. Cows were in full-sibling or half-sibling families. Residuals for each trait were produced from repeated records models with cow age category nested within birth year of cows. Those residuals were averaged to become the dependent variables for genomewide association analyses. Regression analyses of those dependent variables included genotypic values as explanatory variables for 34,980 SNP from a commercially available array and included the genomic relationship matrix. Fifteen SNP loci on BTA 5 were associated (false discovery rate controlled at 0.05) with udder support score. One of those was also detected as associated with average teat diameter. Three of those 15 SNP were located within genes, including one each in (), (), and (). These are notable for their functional role in some aspect of mammary gland formation or health. Other candidate genes for these traits in the vicinity of the SNP loci include () and (). Because these were detected in Nellore-Angus crossbred cows, which typically have very well-formed udders with excellent support across their productive lives, similar efforts in other breeds should be completed, because that may facilitate further refinement of genomic regions responsible for variation in udder traits important in multiple breeds.

Abstract
Effects of monensin inclusion and cattle subspecies on utilization of bermudagrass hay (13.7% CP, 77.3% NDF, and 38.8% ADF) were evaluated using ruminally cannulated steers (5 [BI] and 5 [BT]; 398 kg BW). Subspecies were concurrently subjected to a 2-period, 2-treatment crossover design. Treatments were 0 (CON) or 200 mg·steer·d monensin (MON) in 0.91 kg dried distillers' grains with solubles. Periods were 70 d in length: 20 d of adaptation, 22 d of sample collection, and 28 d for withdrawal of treatment. Steers were group housed during adaptation and moved to individual covered pens for sampling. Hay, ort, and fecal grab samples were collected d 21 through 25 for determination of intake and digestion. Ruminal fluid was collected with a suction strainer 0, 2, 4, 8, and 12 h after feeding on d 42 for pH, VFA, and ruminal NH-N (RAN) analysis. Additionally, at h 2, ruminal fluid and contents were collected for determination of rate of NH production and CH production rate. No subspecies × monensin interactions were observed ( ≥ 0.12). Monensin had no effect ( ≥ 0.16) on intake or digestibility parameters. No subspecies effect ( ≥ 0.11) was observed for forage OM intake, total OM intake, or OM digestion. Total digestible OM intake tended to be greater ( = 0.06) for BT steers than for BI steers (14.0 vs. 12.2 g/kg BW). There was an effect of hour after feeding ( ≤ 0.01) on pH, total VFA, acetate:propionate ratio, and molar percent acetate and propionate. Total VFA concentration was greater ( = 0.01) in CON steers than in MON steers (66.5 vs. 62.0 m). Monensin decreased molar percent acetate ( = 0.02) from 72.5 to 71.2% and increased molar percent propionate ( < 0.01) from 16.9 to 18.7%, resulting in a reduced ( < 0.01) acetate:propionate ratio (from 4.34 to 3.85). Although not significantly ( = 0.19), monensin numerically reduced the CH production rate by 15.8%. Greater ( = 0.07) CH production rate tended to be observed in BI steers than in BT steers (21.4 vs. 16.6 μmol CH·mL·h, respectively). Monensin had no effect ( ≥ 0.32) on pH, RAN, or rate of NH production. A subspecies × hour after feeding interaction was observed for RAN, with BT having greater RAN at h 0 and 4, whereas BI had greater RAN at h 2, 8, and 12. Overall, monensin decreased the acetate:propionate ratio and total VFA concentration but had no effect on forage utilization. steers consumed less digestible OM and had a greater CH production rate compared with BT steers, suggesting BT were better able to utilize the available forage resource than BI.

Effects of monensin withdrawal and cattle subspecies on the utilization of bermudagrass hay (14.3% CP, 72.3% NDF, and 36.9% ADF) were evaluated using ruminally cannulated steers (5 [BI] and 5 [BT]). Subspecies were concurrently subjected to a 2-period, 2-treatment crossover design. Treatments consisted of either 0 mg·steer·d-1 monensin with no previous monensin feeding (CON) or withdrawal from 200 mg·steer·d-1 monensin (MON) fed individually in 0.91 kg dried distillers' grains with solubles for 42 d. Withdrawal was evaluated for a 28-d period. Ruminal fluid was collected 2 h after feeding on d 0, 1, 4, 7, 14, and 21 after withdrawal for determination of pH, VFA, ruminal NH-N (RAN), rate of NH production, and CH production rate. Hay, ort, and fecal grab samples were collected d 23 through 28 after withdrawal for determination of intake and digestion. No subspecies × monensin, subspecies × day, or subspecies × monensin × day interactions were observed ( ≥ 0.11). An effect of day after monensin withdrawal was observed ( < 0.01) for total VFA concentration, with an increase following withdrawal followed by a decrease and then stabilization. Monensin × day after monensin withdrawal interactions ( ≤ 0.01) were observed for the acetate:propionate (A:P) ratio and molar percent of acetate and propionate. There was a decrease in molar percent of propionate between d 1 and 4 from 19.1 to 18.0; however, it remained greater ( ≤ 0.10) for MON than CON through d 7. Withdrawal increased molar percent of acetate from 68.3 to 69.8 between d 0 and 4 for MON steers. The A:P ratio was less ( ≤ 0.01) on d 0 for MON than for CON (3.4 vs. 4.0), but by d 4, it increased to 3.8 and was not different ( = 0.14) from CON. By d 14, no differences ( ≥ 0.88) remained for acetate, propionate, or the A:P ratio. After monensin withdrawal, monensin reduced ( < 0.01) RAN by 12.3% (2.09 vs. 1.83 m for CON and MON, respectively). Monensin withdrawal and cattle subspecies had no effect ( ≥ 0.23) on rate of NH production or CH production rate. Monensin withdrawal had no effect ( ≥ 0.45) on intake or digestibility parameters. Greater forage OM intake ( = 0.09; 21.2 vs. 19.2 g/kg BW) and OM digestibility ( < 0.01; 72.4 vs. 63.0%) resulted in greater ( < 0.01) total digestible OM intake (16.8 vs. 13.2 g/kg BW) in BT steers than in BI steers. These results suggest that BT steers are better able to utilize bermudagrass hay than BI steers. Upon monensin withdrawal, steers previously fed monensin continue to have a reduced A:P ratio for at least 7 d.

Abstract
Bovine viral diarrhea virus (BVDV) has major impacts on beef cattle production worldwide, but the understanding of host animal genetic influence on illness is limited. This study evaluated rectal temperature, weight change and feed intake in Bos indicus crossbred steers (n = 366) that were challenged with BVDV Type 1b, and where family lines were stratified across three vaccine treatments of modified live (MLV), killed, (KV) or no vaccine (NON). Pyrexia classification based on 40.0 °C threshold following challenge and vaccine treatment were investigated for potential interactions with sire for weight change and feed intake following challenge. Pyrexia classification affected daily feed intake (ADFI, p = 0.05), and interacted with day (p < 0.001) for ADFI. Although low incidence of clinical signs was observed, there were marked reductions in average daily gain (ADG) and cumulative feed intake during the first 14 day post-challenge; ADG (CV of 104%) and feed efficiency were highly variable in the 14-day period immediately post-challenge as compared to the subsequent 14-day periods. A sire × vaccine strategy interaction affected ADFI (p < 0.001), and a sire by time period interaction affected ADG (p = 0.03) and total feed intake (p = 0.03). This study demonstrates that different coping responses may exist across genetic lines to the same pathogen, and that subclinical BVDV infection has a measurable impact on cattle production measures.

Abstract
cattle often have the reputation for a poor or dangerous temperament. Identification of genomic regions that associate with temperament of such cattle may be useful for genetic improvement strategies. The objectives of this study were to evaluate subjective temperament scores (1 to 9; higher scores indicated more unfavorable temperament) for aggressiveness, nervousness, flightiness, gregariousness, and overall temperament of one-half steers in feedlot conditions at 1 yr of age and compare those scores of those steers when evaluated approximately 1 mo postweaning, and conduct whole genome association analyses using SNP markers and the temperament traits of those steers at 1 yr of age and for temperament traits of all calves at weaning. Contemporary groups ( < 0.001) were steers born in the same year and season, and fed in the same feedlot pen. Aggressiveness of steers at 1 yr of age was not associated with aggressiveness at weaning (linear regression coefficient did not differ from 0; = 0.96), but regressions of all other yearling scores of steers on the scores at weaning were positive (coefficients ranged from 0.26 ± 0.04 to 0.32 ± 0.04; < 0.001). Estimates of Pearson correlation coefficients (using unadjusted values and residual values) of the different traits measured at 1 yr of age were large ( > 0.63; < 0.008) except for aggressiveness with nervousness, flightiness, or gregariousness, which did not differ from 0 ( > 0.1). Five SNP on BTA 1, 24, and 29 had suggestive associations (0.17 < [adjusted for FDR] < 0.24) with aggressiveness, nervousness, or flightiness at evaluation postweaning and 13 SNP on 11 chromosomes had suggestive associations (0.07 < [adjusted for FDR] < 0.24) with aggressiveness, nervousness, flightiness, or overall temperament score of steers at 1 yr of age. Genes close to these loci with roles in neural systems of various organisms included synaptotagmin 4 (BTA 24), FAT atypical cadhedrin 3 (BTA 29), tubulin tyrosine ligase-like 1 (BTA 5), spermatogenesis associated 17 (BTA 16), stanniocalcin 2 (BTA 20), and GABA receptor γ 3 (BTA 21).

Seven ruminally cannulated Brahman steers were used in a 7 × 4 incomplete block design to determine the effects of cottonseed meal (CSM; 43.9% CP, 82.9% RDP) or dried distillers' grains (DDG; 27.5% CP, 43.6% RDP) supplementation on rice straw utilization (47 g/kg CP and 681 g/kg NDF). Treatments consisted of a negative control receiving no supplement (control) and 3 levels (60, 120, and 180 mg N/kg BW) of either CSM or DDG. Periods were 14 d with 8 d for adaptation and 6 d for data collection. Steers had ad libitum access to rice straw and were fed supplements daily. Increased supplementation resulted in a linear increase ( ≤ 0.06) in forage OM intake from 13.5 g/kg BW by controls to 15.5 and 16.1 g/kg BW for 180 mg N/kg BW of DDG and CSM, respectively. No differences between sources were observed ( = 0.84). Total digestible OM intake was increased by supplementation (linear, < 0.01) from 6.9 g/kg BW (control) to 10.0 and 11.2 g/kg BW for 180 mg N/kg BW of CSM and DDG, respectively. A greater response was observed for DDG ( = 0.05) due to greater provision of supplement (g DM/d) to achieve isonitrogenous treatment levels. Total tract OM digestion tended to increase with DDG supplementation (linear, = 0.08) but not CSM supplementation ( = 0.19). Both supplements did not affect NDF digestion ( > 0.40) or calculated forage NDF digestibility ( > 0.40). Ruminal ammonia concentrations peaked 4 h after supplementation/feeding with the greatest concentration (4.0 m) observed for 180 mg N/kg BW of CSM and the lowest concentration at 4 h observed in the control (0.8 m). Provision of CSM resulted in a linear increase ( < 0.01) in average ruminal ammonia, in contrast to the quadratic response ( = 0.02) observed with DDG supplementation. Total VFA production linearly increased for both CSM and DDG supplementation ( = 0.09 and = 0.01, respectively). Protein supplements containing high and low levels of RDP were effective at improving intake and utilization of rice straw by Brahman steers.

Abstract
Consumer preferences and willingness-to-pay (WTP) for beef sirloin steaks with differing production, physical, and credence attributes related to the use of postextraction algal residue (PEAR), a novel feed ingredient, were estimated. Ninety-six consumers participated in a sensory tasting panel before completing a choice set survey; 127 consumers completed only the choice set survey without sampling products. Steaks from grain- and PEAR-fed steers had similar Warner-Bratzler shear force (WBSF) scores (1.89 kg and 2.01 kg, respectively; = 0.77) and had lower WBSF scores than steaks from grass-fed steers (3.37 kg; < 0.05). Eicosapentaenoic acid (20:5) was not different among steaks from grain- and PEAR-fed steers ( = 0.39) but was greater compared with steaks from grass-fed cattle ( ≤ 0.03). Panelists in the sensory portion of the study evaluated beef samples for like/dislike of overall sample, overall flavor, beefy flavor, and juiciness. Panelist rating of overall like, overall flavor like, and beefy flavor like were not different between the PEAR- and grain-fed treatments ( > 0.26). Panelists rated the juiciness like/dislike of steaks from PEAR-fed cattle the highest ( < 0.01) among the 3 samples. Sensory tasting of the products was observed to alter the preferences of consumers. Consumers who completed only the survey negatively perceived beef from PEAR-fed cattle compared with beef from grain-fed cattle, with a WTP discount of -US$1.17/kg. However, with sensory tasting, the WTP for beef from PEAR-fed cattle was not discounted relative to beef from grain-fed cattle ( = 0.21). The nontasting consumers had much higher stated WTP values for credence attributes. Factors that influence the eating experience (tenderness and quality grade) dominated as the most important attributes on WTP among the tasting group. The use of no hormones and no antibiotics in production had a premium of $2.34/kg among the nontasting group, but with tasting, the premium was $1.19/kg. If PEAR-fed beef came to market, there would be no need to differentiate it from grain-fed beef unless retailers wanted to market it as a differentiated product. If it were marketed as a differentiated product, retailers would need to hold promotional tastings to change consumer's preconceived notions about the product.

Abstract
Cattle consuming low-quality forages (LQF) require protein supplementation to increase forage utilization via ruminal fermentation. Biofuel production from algal biomass results in large quantities of postextraction algal residue (PEAR), which has the potential to elicit LQF utilization responses similar to cottonseed meal (CSM); however, its effect on ruminal bacterial communities is unknown. Five ruminally and duodenally cannulated Angus steers in a 5 × 5 Latin square had ad libitum access to oat straw diets. Treatments were infused ruminally and consisted of an unsupplemented control; PEAR at 50, 100, and 150 mg N/kg BW; and CSM at 100 mg N/kg BW. Ruminal samples were collected 4 h after supplementation on d 14 of each period and separated into solid and liquid fractions. Each sample was extracted for genomic DNA, PCR amplified for the V4 to V6 region of the 16S rRNA, sequenced on the 454 Roche pyrosequencing platform, and analyzed using the QIIME pipeline. Weighted UniFrac analysis and Morisita-Horn index demonstrated different community composition between liquid and solid fractions. Measures of richness including observed operational taxonomic units (OTU) and abundance coverage estimator metric decreased with greater PEAR provision (P ≤ 0.09). There were 42 core microbiome OTU observed in all solid fraction samples while the liquid fraction samples contained 30 core OTU. Bacteroidetes was the predominant phylum followed by Firmicutes in both fractions, which together characterized more than 90% of sequences. Relative abundance of Firmicutes increased with PEAR supplementation in the liquid fraction (linear, P = 0.02). Among Firmicutes, Lachnospiraceae, Ruminococcaceae, and Clostridiaceae families increased in the liquid fraction with greater PEAR supplementation (linear, P ≤ 0.03). Prevotella represented over 25% of sequences in all treatments, and relative abundance decreased in the solid fraction with increasing PEAR provision (linear, P = 0.01). Fibrobacter and Treponema decreased in the liquid fraction with increasing PEAR (linear, P < 0.10). Results suggest PEAR supplementation increased forage utilization by increasing members of Firmicutes within the liquid fraction of the rumen microbiome.

Abstract
We present a new transcriptome assembly of the Pacific whiteleg shrimp (Litopenaeus vannamei), the species most farmed for human consumption. Its functional annotation, a substantial improvement over previous ones, is provided freely. RNA-Seq with Illumina HiSeq technology was used to analyze samples extracted from shrimp abdominal muscle, hepatopancreas, gills and pleopods. We used the Trinity and Trinotate software suites for transcriptome assembly and annotation, respectively. The quality of this assembly and the affiliated targeted homology searches greatly enrich the curated transcripts currently available in public databases for this species. Comparison with the model arthropod Daphnia allows some insights into defining characteristics of decapod crustaceans. This large-scale gene discovery gives the broadest depth yet to the annotated transcriptome of this important species and should be of value to ongoing genomics and immunogenetic resistance studies in this shrimp of paramount global economic importance.

Abstract
Gestation length, birth weight, and weaning weight of F2 Nelore-Angus calves (n = 737) with designed extensive full-sibling and half-sibling relatedness were evaluated for association with 34,957 SNP markers. In analyses of birth weight, random relatedness was modeled three ways: 1) none, 2) random animal, pedigree-based relationship matrix, or 3) random animal, genomic relationship matrix. Detected birth weight-SNP associations were 1,200, 735, and 31 for those parameterizations respectively; each additional model refinement removed associations that apparently were a result of the built-in stratification by relatedness. Subsequent analyses of gestation length and weaning weight modeled genomic relatedness; there were 40 and 26 trait-marker associations detected for those traits, respectively. Birth weight associations were on BTA14 except for a single marker on BTA5. Gestation length associations included 37 SNP on BTA21, 2 on BTA27 and one on BTA3. Weaning weight associations were on BTA14 except for a single marker on BTA10. Twenty-one SNP markers on BTA14 were detected in both birth and weaning weight analyses.

Abstract
Algal biomass has been identified as a third-generation biofuel. Significant quantities of the coproduct postextraction algal residue (PEAR) remain after lipid extraction. After extraction, PEAR is concentrated in protein (17.9% CP on a DM basis and 32.5% CP on an ash-free basis), suggesting it may be an alternative to cottonseed meal (CSM) as a protein supplement. Our objectives were to determine the optimal level of PEAR supplementation to steers consuming straw and to compare the effects of PEAR supplementation on straw utilization and N metabolism with an isonitrogenous level of CSM. Five steers (198.2 ± 6.1 kg of BW), in a 5 × 5 Latin square, had ad libitum access to oat straw (80% NDF and 4.5% CP on a DM basis). Treatments were infused ruminally once daily and included no supplemental protein (CON); PEAR at 50, 100, and 150 mg N/kg BW; and CSM at 100 mg N/kg BW. Provision of PEAR increased total digestible OM intake (TDOMI) quadratically (P = 0.01) from 0.9 (CON) to 1.6 kg/d (100 mg N/kg BW of PEAR). Organic matter digestibility (OMD) increased quadratically (P < 0.01) with supplementation and was maximized (55% OMD) at 50 mg N/kg BW of PEAR. At isonitrogenous levels of PEAR and CSM, TDOMI was similar (P = 0.13) as was OMD (P = 0.50). Negative N balance was observed for all treatments except PEAR provided at 100 or 150 mg of N/kg BW. Nitrogen balance was quadratic (P < 0.01) with the greatest retention (1.84 g N/d) occurring at 100 mg N/kg BW of PEAR. There were no differences (P ≥ 0.22) between isonitrogenous PEAR and CSM supplementation in measurements of ruminal ammonia or VFA concentrations. Straw utilization was maximized when PEAR was provided at 100 mg N/kg BW. Our observations suggest cattle provided PEAR utilize straw in a manner similar to those supplemented CSM, indicating PEAR has potential to substitute for CSM as a protein supplement in forage-based operations.

Abstract
The objective of this work was to estimate heritability of each of 5 subjectively measured aspects of temperament of cattle and the genetic correlations of pairs of those traits. From 2003 to 2013, Nellore-Angus F2 and F3 calves (n = 1,816) were evaluated for aspects of temperament at an average 259 d of age, which was approximately 2 mo after weaning. Calves were separated from a group and subjectively scored from 1 (calm, good temperament) to 9 (wild, poor temperament) for aggressiveness (willingness to hit an evaluator), nervousness, flightiness, gregariousness (willingness to separate from the group), and a distinct overall score by 4 evaluators. Data were analyzed using threshold and linear models with additive genetic random effects. Two-trait animal models (nonthreshold) included the additive genetic covariance for pairs of traits and were used to estimate additive genetic correlations. Contemporary groups (n = 104) represented calves penned together for evaluation on given evaluation days. Heifers had greater (worse) means for all traits than steers (P < 0.05). The regression of score on age in days was included in final models for flightiness (P = 0.05; -0.006 ± 0.003) and gregariousness (P = 0.025; -0.007 ± 0.003). Estimates of heritability were large (0.51, 0.4, 0.45, 0.49, and 0.47 for aggressiveness, nervousness, flightiness, gregariousness, and overall temperament, respectively; SE = 0.07 for each). The ability to use this methodology to distinctly separate different aspects of calf temperament appeared to be limited, as estimates of additive genetic correlations were near unity for all pairs of traits; estimates of phenotypic correlation ranged from 0.88 ± 0.01 to 0.99 ± 0.002 for pairs of traits. Distinct subsequent analyses indicated a significant negative relationship of 4 of the various temperament scores with weight at weaning (regression coefficients ranged from -0.008 ± 0.002 for nervousness, flightiness, and gregariousness to -0.003 ± 0.002 for aggressiveness). In subsequent analyses, the regression of temperament trait on sequence of evaluation within a pen was highly significant and solutions ranged from 0.05 ± 0.007 for aggressiveness to 0.08 ± 0.007 for all other traits. The apparent large additive genetic variance for any one of these traits may be useful in identification of genes responsible for differences in cattle temperament.

Abstract
We hypothesized that exogenous fatty acids, and especially or 18:2 trans-10, cis-12 conjugated linoleic acid (CLA), would decrease adipogenic and lipogenic gene expression and de novo fatty acid biosynthesis in intramuscular (i.m.) and subcutaneous (s.c.) adipose tissues. Fresh i.m. and s.c. adipose tissues were collected from the longissimus thoracis muscle of Angus steers at 12, 14, and 16 months of age (n = 4 per time point). Adipose tissue explants were incubated in duplicate for 48 h with 40 μM α-linolenic (ALA), oleic, stearic, trans-vaccenic, or CLA. Adipocyte size, acetate and glucose incorporation into fatty acids in vitro and mRNA levels for C/EBPβ, CPT1β, GPR43, PPARγ, PRKAA1 (AMPKα) and SCD1 were measured following the incubations. PRKAA1 and SCD1gene expression were greater (P < 0.001) in s.c. adipose tissue than in i.m. adipose tissue and acetate incorporation into lipids and C/EBPβ, PPARγ, and SCD1gene expression were greater at 16 months of age than at 12 months of age in i.m. adipose (P < 0.01). C/EBPβ gene expression increased by 16 months of age and PRKAA1 gene expression decreased by 16 months of age in s.c. adipose tissue. All fatty acids increased s.c. adipocyte volumes whereas CLA decreased acetate incorporation into lipids in s.c. adipose tissue (P < 0.05), but none of the fatty acids affected gene expression in i.m. or s.c. adipose tissue (P > 0.10). Thus, CLA depressed de novo fatty acid biosynthesis from acetate but neither CLA nor other fatty acids significantly affected adipogenic or lipogenic gene expression.

Abstract
Infertility and subfertility are important and pervasive reproductive problems in both domestic animals and humans. The majority of embryonic loss occurs during the first three weeks of pregnancy in cattle and women due, in part, to inadequate endometrial receptivity for support of embryo implantation. To identify heifers of contrasting fertility, serial rounds of artificial insemination (AI) were conducted in 201 synchronized crossbred beef heifers. The heifers were then fertility classified based on number of pregnancies detected on day 35 in four AI opportunities. Heifers, classified as having high fertility, subfertility or infertility, were selected for further study. The fertility-classified heifers were superovulated and flushed, and the recovered embryos were graded and then transferred to synchronized recipients. Quantity of embryos recovered per flush, embryo quality, and subsequent recipient pregnancy rates did not differ by fertility classification. Two in vivo-produced bovine embryos (stage 4 or 5, grade 1 or 2) were then transferred into each heifer on day 7 post-estrus. Pregnancy rates were greater in high fertility than lower fertility heifers when heifers were used as embryo recipients. The reproductive tracts of the classified heifers were obtained on day 14 of the estrous cycle. No obvious morphological differences in reproductive tract structures and histology of the uterus were observed in the heifers. Microarray analysis revealed differences in the endometrial transcriptome based on fertility classification. A genome-wide association study, based on SNP genotyping, detected 7 moderate associations with fertility across 6 different chromosomes. Collectively, these studies support the idea that innate differences in uterine function underlie fertility and early pregnancy loss in ruminants. Cattle with defined early pregnancy success or loss is useful to elucidate the complex biological and genetic mechanisms governing endometrial receptivity and uterine competency for pregnancy.

Abstract
We hypothesized that supplementing finishing diets with palm oil would promote adipocyte differentiation in subcutaneous adipose tissue of feedlot steers, and that soybean oil supplementation would depress adipocyte differentiation. Twenty-eight Angus steers were assigned randomly to 3 groups of 9 or 10 steers and fed a basal diet without additional fat (control), with 3% palm oil (rich in palmitic acid), or with 3% soybean oil (rich in polyunsaturated fatty acids), for 10 wk, top-dressed daily. Palm oil had no effect (P > 0.05) on ADG, food intake, or G:F, whereas soybean oil depressed ADG (P = 0.02), food intake (P = 0.04), and G:F (P = 0.05). Marbling scores tended (P = 0.09) to be greater in palm oil-fed steers (Modest(09)) than in soybean oil-fed steers (Small(55)). Subcutaneous adipocyte mean volume was greater in palm oil-fed steers (515.9 pL) than in soybean-supplemented cattle (395.6 pL; P = 0.01). Similarly, glucose and acetate incorporation into total lipids in vitro was greater in subcutaneous adipose tissue of palm oil-fed steers (119.9 and 242.8 nmol·3h(-1)·10(5) cells, respectively) than adipose tissue of soybean oil-fed steers in (48.9 and 95.8 nmol·3h(-1)·10(5) cells, respectively). Glucose-6-phosphate dehydrogenase and NADP-malate dehydrogenase activities were greater (P ≤ 0.05) in subcutaneous adipose tissue of palm oil-fed steers than in adipose tissue of control steers. Palm oil did not increase palmitic acid or decrease oleic acid in subcutaneous adipose tissue or LM, but decreased (P ≤ 0.05) myristoleic, palmitoleic, and cis-vaccenic acid in adipose tissue, indicating a depression in stearoyl-coenzyme A desaturase activity. Soybean oil increased the proportion of α-linolenic acid in adipose tissue and muscle and increased linoleic acid and 18:1trans-10 in muscle. We conclude that palm oil supplementation promoted lipid synthesis in adipose tissue without depressing feed efficiency or increasing the palmitic acid content of beef.

Abstract
Meals are clusters of feedbunk visit (BV) events that are differentiated from the next meal by a nonfeeding interval that is longer compared with the nonfeeding intervals within a meal. The longest nonfeeding interval considered to be part of a meal is defined as the meal criterion. The objective of this study was to determine which combination of 2 probability density functions [(PDF): Gaussian normal (G), Weibull (W), Log-Normal, Gamma, and Gumbel] used in a bimodal distribution model had the best fit of nonfeeding interval data collected in beef heifers. Feeding behavior traits (572,627 total BV events) were measured in 119 heifers fed a high-grain diet (3.08 Mcal ME/kg DM), using a GrowSafe system for 66 d. The frequency and duration of BV events averaged 75 ± 15 events/d and 73.0 ± 22.3 min/d, respectively. The bimodal PDF combinations were fitted to the log(10)-transformed interval lengths between BV events for each animal, using R mixdist package (2.13). The Akaike Information Criterion (AIC) was used to assess goodness of fit of the 25 bimodal PDF combinations. The PDF model with the least AIC value was selected as the best fit for each individual. A χ(2) analysis of the selected best PDF distribution across individuals revealed that 78.2% of the heifers best fit were G-W or W-W PDF models. The likelihood probability estimates were calculated from the average AIC deviation of each model from the standard G-G model. The G-W likelihood probability estimate was greater (P = 0.001) than the W-W combination (0.997 vs. 0.727). Our analysis indicated the G-W model had a statistically better fit and is most likely the best approach to define meal criterion in beef heifers fed high-grain diets.
