Abstract
Fasting heat production (FHP) is used to assess the maintenance net energy requirement of animals. Herein, the FHP of layer-type pullets was estimated. In trial 1, 16 40-day-old Jingfen layer-type pullets were divided into 4 groups of 4 chickens and placed in 4 respiratory chambers. Pullets had free access to feed and water. After 4-d acclimatization, feed was withdrawn, and chickens were measured for FHP for 3 consecutive days. In trial 2, twenty-four 40-day-old pullets were placed in 4 respiratory calorimetry chambers, with 6 pullets per chamber. After 4-d acclimatization, one chamber was randomly selected and all pullets in the chamber was sampled at 5, 25, 50, or 65 h after feed withdrawal. The result showed that FHP declined with fasting time and reached the lowest level between 48 and 72 h. Respiratory quotient was decreased (P < 0.05) between 24 and 48 h compared with that in the first 24 h after fasting. The FHP in the light period showed a significant to decline with fasting time (P < 0.01), whereas the FHP in the dark period was decreased (P < 0.01) 24 h after fasting. Body weight, thigh mass, and abdominal fat decreased (P < 0.05) at 25 h after fasting. Serum glucose were increased (P < 0.01) and while triglycerides were significantly decreased (P < 0.01) at 50 h compared with that at 5 and 25 h time point. The result suggests that the adequate measuring period for FHP for layer-type pullets is from 24 to 48 h after fasting. The FHP of 7-wk-old layer-type pullets was 562.20 kJ/kg of BW0.75/d under a 10-h light and 14-h dark lighting regime.

Abstract
Feed costs are overwhelmingly the largest expense for dairy producers. Thus, improving milk production efficiency (milk fat and protein are the main incomes for farmers) is of great economic importance in the dairy industry. The main objective of this study was to develop a dynamic energy partitioning model to describe and quantify how dietary energy from carbohydrate, protein, and fat is transferred to milk (protein, lactose, and fat) in dairy goats. In addition, due to increasing worldwide concerns regarding livestock contribution to global warming, methane (CH4) emission was quantified. For modeling purposes, 158 individual goat observations were used and randomly split into 2/3 for model development and 1/3 for internal evaluation. For external evaluation, 20 different energy balance studies from the literature (77 observations) were evaluated. The Root Mean Square Prediction Error (RMSPE) was 13.2% for loss of energy in CH4, 16.8% for energy in fat, 19.4% for energy in protein, and 22.3 energy in lactose. Mean bias was around zero for all variables and the slope bias was zero for milk energy in lactose, close to 1% for milk fat (1.01%), and around 3% and 10% for protein and CH4, respectively. Random bias was greater than 85% for energy in CH4 and milk energy components indicating non-systematic errors and that the equation in the model fitted the data properly. Analyses of residuals appeared to be randomly distributed around zero. Slopes of regression lines for residuals vs. predicted were positive for milk fat energy, zero for lactose, and negative for milk energy in protein and CH4. This model suggested for use with mixed diets and by-products to obtain balanced macronutrient supply, methane emissions, and milk performance during mid lactation could be an interesting tool to help farmers simulate scenarios that increase milk fat and protein, evaluate CH4 emissions, without the costs of running animal trials.

Abstract
A study using indirect calorimetry and 12 lactating multiparous Jersey cows (53 ± 23 d in milk at the beginning of the experiment; mean ± standard deviation) was conducted to evaluate the utilization of energy in cattle consuming diets containing increasing hydrolyzed feather meal (HFM). A triplicated 4 × 4 Latin square design with 35-d periods (28-d adaption and 4-d collections) was used to compare 4 different dietary treatments. Treatments contained (DM basis) HFM at 0% (0HFM), 3.3% (3.3HFM), 6.7% (6.7MFM), and 10.0% (10HFM). Diets were formulated such that HFM replaced blood meal and nonenzymatically browned soybean meal. With increasing HFM, linear increases were observed for dietary NEL content (1.61, 1.64, 1.69, and 1.70 ± 0.042 Mcal/kg of DM for 0HFM, 3.3HFM, 6.7MFM, and 10HFM, respectively), and the efficiency of converting ME to NEL (0.708, 0.711, 0.717, and 0.719). Apparent total-tract digestibility of CP linearly decreased with increasing HFM (63.4, 61.1, 59.9, and 58.6 ± 1.46% for 0HFM, 3.3HFM, 6.7MFM, and 10HFM, respectively), whereas long-chain fatty acid digestibility increased with increasing HFM (77.2, 77.7, 78.5, and 80.6 ± 1.30%). With increased inclusion of HFM, fecal N excretion increased (199, 230, 239, 237 ± 12.1 g/d for 0HFM, 3.3HFM, 6.7MFM, and 10HFM, respectively), whereas urinary N excretion decreased (166, 151, 155, and 119 ± 14.8 g/d). Increasing the concentration of HFM resulted in a quadratic effect on DMI (19.6, 20.2, 20.3, and 19.1 ± 0.79 kg/d for 0HFM, 3.3HFM, 6.7MFM, and 10HFM, respectively) and milk yield (31.7, 32.0, 31.9, and 29.7 ± 1.32 kg/d). Increasing HFM linearly decreased the milk protein concentration (3.34, 3.29, 3.23, and 3.23 ± 0.158 for 0HFM, 3.3HFM, 6.7MFM, and 10HFM, respectively) and yield (1.05, 1.05, 1.02, and 0.96 ± 0.040 kg). The inclusion of HFM did not affect energy-correct milk yield (average of 39.3 ± 1.54). Results of this study suggest that HFM can increase dietary NEL content compared with blood meal and nonenzymatically browned soybean meal and maintained energy-corrected milk yield; however, feeding HFM at greater than 6.7% of diet DM decreased DMI, and protein availability may have been reduced with increased HFM, leading to a linear decrease in milk protein concentration and yield.

Abstract
Feeding cattle in intensified settings allows cow-calf producers to decrease their reliance on grazed forage and utilize alternative feedstuffs. During times of intense management, diet type may alter energy utilization. Fourteen pregnant MARC III heifers (405 ± 44 kg BW) were used in a 180 d experiment to determine effects of diet type on nutrient and energy utilization. Heifers were randomly assigned to one of two treatments, a forage diet (FOR; 2.10 Mcal metabolizable energy [ME]/kg; 95.75% forage) or a concentrate diet (CONC; 2.94 Mcal ME/kg; 71% concentrate), and individually fed to meet maintenance energy requirements (0.135 Mcal ME/kg BW0.75). The CONC diet contained dry-rolled corn, corn stalks (10.16 cm grind size), soybean meal, corn silage (approximately 45% corn grain; stored in a plastic bag), dicalcium phosphate, urea, and a premix pellet; FOR contained alfalfa hay (harvested at mid-bloom), corn silage, dicalcium phosphate, and a premix pellet. Measurements of energy intake and digestibility were measured over a 4-d period on days 116, 172, and 235 of gestation. Using portable headbox calorimeters, measurements of O2, CO2, and CH4 gases were collected over a period of 24 h. Data were analyzed in a completely randomized design with diet as fixed effect. Dry matter and organic matter digestibility were greater for CONC than FOR (P < 0.01). Intake of gross energy (GE) and digestible energy (DE) were greater for FOR (P < 0.01), but by design, ME intake was not different between treatments (P = 0.26). Energy lost as methane (% of GE intake) was not different between treatments (P = 0.49). The ratio of ME to DE was greater for CONC (86.8 vs. 82.8; P = 0.01) than FOR. Heat production relative to ME was not different between treatments (P = 0.85). Maternal tissue energy did not differ and was 1.2 Mcal/d for CONC and 0.9 Mcal/d for FOR (P = 0.73). Greater nitrogen (N) consumption was observed for FOR (192.2 g/d) than CONC (134.0 g/d; P < 0.01), and retained N was greater for FOR than CONC (P < 0.01) on days 116 and 235 of gestation. Neither concentrate-based or forage-based diets affected body condition score (P = 0.26). Heifers fed concentrate-based diets retained more energy in part because they had larger calves, but this energy was not recovered in maternal tissue.

Abstract
The ability to determine total heat production (THP) in individual sows and litters can be logistically difficult and often requires the use of multiple animals to generate data on a per room basis. Furthermore, these systems may be costly to construct, precluding their use by many researchers. Therefore, the objective was to develop a low-cost indirect calorimetry system to determine THP in individual lactating sows and litters. Six indirect calorimeters were constructed to house 1 sow and litter in a crate throughout farrowing and a 21-d lactation period. Farrowing crates were placed within a high-density polyethylene pan filled with water and then a polyvinyl chloride frame was constructed around the crate. The frame provided a structure to hold the inlet and outlet air pipes, feed and water inlets, air circulation fans, and a polyethylene plastic sheet that was secured at the bottom of the frame and submerged under water to maintain an air tight seal. Chamber accuracies for O2 and CO2 were evaluated by ethanol combustion. One week pre-farrowing, 6 pregnant multiparous sows (parity 2.9 ± 0.9; 218.3 ± 38.6 kg BW) were housed individually in each farrowing crate and the calorimeters were maintained at thermoneutral conditions (20.9 ± 2.6°C and 43.7 ± 18.6% relative humidity) throughout lactation. On lactation day 4, 8, 14, and 18, indirect calorimetry was performed on all sows and their litters, as well as 2 piglets from a sentinel litter to determine THP and the respiratory quotient (RQ). Sentinel piglet data were used to estimate THP and RQ for the sows independent of the litter. Sow + litter THP (kcal/h) increased (P = 0.01; 16.6%) on day 8 compared to day 4 and was greater (27.3%) on day 14 and day 18 compared to day 4 and day 8. Sow THP was greater (P = 0.01) on day 8 (401.19 ± 17.15 kcal/h) and day 14 (430.79 ± 12.42 kcal/h) compared to day 4 (346.16 ± 16.62 kcal/h), and was greater on day 14 compared to day 8, and on day 18 (386.16 ± 20.02 kcal/h) compared to day 14. No sow + litter RQ differences (P = 0.21; 1.02 ± 0.04) were detected by day of lactation. However, sow RQ was reduced (P = 0.01) on day 14 (0.98 ± 0.02) compared to day 4 (1.03 ± 0.03), day 8 (1.02 ± 0.02), and day 18 (1.04 ± 0.03). In summary, this cost-effective system (total cost: $1,892 USD) can allow researchers to accurately evaluate THP in individual lactating sows and their litters.

Abstract
We have previously determined phenylalanine (Phe) requirements in mature dogs; however, little information is available on differences of Phe minimum requirements on different breed sizes. The objective of this study was to determine Phe requirements in adult dogs of three different breed sizes using the direct AA oxidation (DAAO) technique. In total, 12 adult dogs were used, four Miniature Dachshunds (5.3 ± 0.6 Kg BW; 1.8 ± 0.1 years old; mean ± SD), four Beagles (8.3 ± 0.7 Kg BW; 6.7 ± 0.2 years old; mean ± SD), and four Labrador Retrievers (34.9 ± 2.2 Kg BW; 4.4 ± 1.4 years old; mean ± SD). A basal Phe-deficient diet with excess of tyrosine (Tyr) was formulated. Dogs were randomly fed the basal diet supplemented with increasing levels of Phe; the Phe content in the final experimental diets was 0.24, 0.29, 0.34, 0.44, 0.54, 0.64, and 0.74%. After 2 d of adaptation to the experimental diets, dogs underwent individual DAAO studies. During the DAAO studies, total daily feed was divided in 13 equal meals; at the sixth meal, dogs were fed a bolus of L-[1-13C]-Phe (9.40 mg/kg BW), and thereafter, L-[1-13C]-Phe (2.4 mg/kg BW) was supplied with every meal. Total production of 13CO2 (F13CO2) during isotopic steady state was determined by enrichment of 13CO2 in breath samples and total production of CO2 measured using indirect calorimetry. The mean requirement for Phe and the 95% confidence interval (CI) was determined using a two-phase linear regression model. To account for differences in feed intake, requirements were expressed in mg.kg BW-1.d-1. The mean requirement for Phe were 41.9, 41.3, and 42.6, and upper 95% CI of Phe requirements were 57.3, 58.4, and 64.8 mg.kg BW-1.d-1 for Miniature Dachshunds, Beagles, and Labrador Retrievers, respectively. The mean requirement and the upper 95% CI for the pooled data (all dogs) was 45.3 and 55.4 mg.kg BW-1.d-1, respectively. In conclusion, the Phe requirements for different breeds were similar among dog breeds studied. However, Phe recommendations proposed in this study are lower than those proposed by NRC and AAFCO (mg.kg BW-1.d-1).

Abstract
The objective of this experiment was to determine the NE content of different dietary lipids fed to growing pigs using indirect calorimetry. Thirty-six growing (initial BW: 41.1 ± 3.1 kg) barrows were allotted to 6 diets based on completely randomized design with 6 replicate pigs per diet. Diets included a corn-soybean meal basal diet and 5 test diets each containing 10% palm oil, poultry fat, fish oil, corn oil, or flaxseed oil at the expense of corn and soybean meal. During each period, pigs were individually housed in metabolism crates for 14 d, which included 7 d for adaptation to feed, metabolism crates, and environmental conditions. On day 8, pigs were transferred to the open-circuit respiration chambers and fed 1 of the 6 diets at 2.3 MJ ME/kg BW0.6/day. Total feces and urine were collected and daily heat production (HP) was also calculated from day 9 to day 13. On the last day of each period (day 14), pigs were fasted and the fasting heat production (FHP) was measured. The results show that the FHP of pigs averaged 809 kJ/kg BW0.6·day-1 and was not affected by diet characteristics. The DE values were 35.98, 36.84, 37.11, 38.95, and 38.38 MJ/kg DM, the ME values were 35.79, 36.56, 36.92, 37.73, and 38.11 MJ/kg DM, and the NE values were 32.42, 33.21, 33.77, 34.00, and 34.12 MJ/kg DM, for the palm oil, poultry fat, fish oil, corn oil, and flaxseed oil, respectively. Based on our result, we concluded that the DE content of dietary lipid varied from 91% to 98% of its GE content, the ME content of dietary lipid was approximately 99% of its DE content, and the NE content of dietary lipid was approximately 90% of its ME content in growing pigs.

Abstract
The objective of this experiment was to determine the effects of increased fiber content in diets on heat production (HP) and NE:ME ratio and to determine the NE content and NE:ME ratio of full-fat rice bran (FFRB), defatted rice bran (DFRB), corn gluten feed (CGF), and corn germ meal (CGM) fed to growing barrows using indirect calorimetry (IC). Thirty growing barrows (28.5 ± 2.4 kg BW) were allotted in a completely randomized design to 5 dietary treatments that included a corn-soybean meal basal diet and 4 experimental diets with a constant ratio of corn and soybean meal (difference method) containing 30% FFRB, DFRB, CGF, and CGF. Pigs were housed in individual metabolism crates for 20 d including 14-d adaptation to the diet and 6 d to determine the HP and total collection of feces and urine in respiration chambers. Pigs were fed their respective diets at 550 kcal ME·kg BW0.60-1·d-1 on the basis of BW measured on days 0, 7, and 14. The apparent total tract digestibility (ATTD) of DM, GE, and OM were greater (P < 0.01) in pigs fed the basal diet. The ATTD of DM, GE, and OM in pigs fed the DFRB diet were lesser (P < 0.01) when compared with those fed the basal and FFRB diets. The ATTD of ether extract (EE) in pigs fed the FFRB diet was greater (P < 0.01) compared with those fed basal, DFRB, CGF, and CGM diets. The HP adjusted for the same ME intake was greater (P < 0.01) in pigs fed the DFRB, CGF, and CGM diets compared with those fed basal and FFRB diets. The NE:ME ratio in pigs fed the FFRB diet was greater (P < 0.01) when compared with those fed the DFRB, CGF, and CGM diets. The NE content of FFRB, DFRB, CGF, and CGM determined using the IC method were 2,952, 1,100, 1,747, and 2,079 kcal/kg DM, respectively. The NE content of FFRB, CGF, and CGM determined using the IC method were 3.5%, 3.8%, and 1.8% greater, respectively, than the predicted values, whereas NE content of DFRB determined using the IC method was 2.1% lower than the predicted values. In conclusion, pigs fed the fiber-rich ingredients had greater HP and lower nutrient digestibility. However, pigs fed FFRB diets containing greater fat content had a lower heat increment and, therefore, higher utilization efficiency. The NE:ME ratio ranged from 71.6% to 82.4%. The NE of FFRB, DFRB, CGF, and CGM determined using the IC method were 2,952, 1,100, 1,747, and 2,079 kcal/kg DM, respectively.

Abstract
An experiment was conducted to determine the digestible energy (DE), metabolizable energy (ME), and net energy (NE) contents of canola meal (CM) and to investigate the effects of basal diet [corn diet vs. corn-soybean meal (SBM) diet] and methodology (difference method vs. regression method) on energy values of CM. Thirty-six growing barrows (20.8 ± 1.0 kg initial body weight [BW]) were individually housed in metabolism crates and randomly allotted to one of six dietary treatments to give six replicates per treatment. The six experimental diets included a corn diet, a corn-SBM diet, a corn diet with 15 or 30% of CM, and a corn-SBM diet with 15 or 30% of CM. The DE, ME, and NE of CM were determined using the corn diet or the corn-SBM diet as a basal diet. In each basal diet, two additional diets containing 15 or 30% of CM were formulated to compare the determined energy values by the difference method and estimated energy values from the regression method. Feeding level was set at 550 kcal ME/kg BW0.6 per day. Pigs were fed experimental diets for 16 d including 10 d for adaptation and 6 d for total collection of feces and urine. Pigs were then moved into indirect calorimetry chambers to determine 24 h heat production (HP) and 12 h fasting HP. The DE, ME, and NE of CM determined by the difference method were within the 95% confidence intervals estimated for the DE, ME, and NE of CM by the regression method regardless of the basal diets used, which indicates that the difference and regression methods give equivalent DE, ME, and NE of CM. However, when the goodness of fit for the linear model was compared, the r2 of the regression analysis from the corn-SBM diet (0.78) was relatively greater than that from corn diet (0.40). The estimated NE of CM by the prediction equations generated by either the corn diet or corn-SBM diets were 2,096 kcal/kg and 1,960 kcal/kg (as-fed basis), respectively, whereas those values determined by the difference method were 2,233 kcal/kg and 2,106 kcal/kg (as-fed basis), respectively. In conclusion, the NE of CM determined in the current study was, on average, 2,099 kcal/kg (as-fed basis). The difference and regression methods do not give different NE value of CM fed to growing pigs. Although the NE values of CM determined using either the corn diet or the corn-SBM diet were not different, the greater r2 of the regression analysis from the corn-SBM diet than that from the corn diet suggests that the corn-SBM diet is a more appropriate basal diet for NE determination of ingredients.

Abstract
The AME and net energy (NE) values of 4 corn varieties, including 2 normal corn varieties (Zheng Dan 958 and Xian Yu 335), and one each of waxy corn and sweet corn, and 2 soybean meal samples including regular (RSBM) and dehulled soybean meal (DSBM), were determined in 2 experiments for broiler breeding cocks using the indirect calorimetry method. The 4 test diets in Experiment 1 consisted of each test corn, which replaced 40% of the corn-soybean meal basal diet, and the test diets in Experiment 2 contained 25% RSBM or DSBM, which was used to replace the corn basal diet. Thirty (Experiment 1) or 18 (Experiment 2) 50-week-old Arbor Acre (AA) broiler breeding cocks were used in a completely randomized design. After a 7 d dietary adaptation period, 6 birds as replicates from each treatment were assigned to individual respiration chambers for energy measurement via gaseous exchange and total excreta collection for 10 d. In Experiment 1, the AME, ME intake (MEI), retained energy (RE), NE, and NE:AME ratio values were higher (P < 0.001) in the test diets as compared with the corn-soybean meal basal diet. The AME and NE values in the sweet corn diet were higher (P < 0.05) than those values in the other 3 test diets. The heat production (HP), fasting heat production (FHP), and respiration quotient (RQ) were not influenced by the various experimental diets. The respective AME and NE values were 3,785, 3,775, 3,738, and 3,997 kcal/kg (DM basis), and 2,982, 3,006, 2,959, and 3,146 kcal/kg (DM basis) for Zheng Dan 958, Xian Yu 335, waxy corn, and sweet corn. Birds fed a corn basal diet in Experiment 2 had higher AME, MEI, RE, NE, and NE:AME ratio values (P < 0.001). Soybean meal substitution had no effect on HP, FHP, or RQ. The average AME and NE content was 2,492 and 1,581 kcal/kg (DM basis) for RSBM, and 2,580 and 1,654 kcal/kg (DM basis) for DSBM, respectively.

Abstract
Information on effects of supplementing fibrous diets with exogenous enzymes on nutrient absorption and energetic demands of visceral organs is scarce. Therefore, this study investigated the effects of supplementing a high-fiber (HF) diet with a multi-enzyme cocktail (MC) on net glucose and lactate portal fluxes, insulin production, and O consumption by the portal-drained viscera (PDV) and whole animal in growing pigs. The MC supplied (analyzed values) 5,397 U of xylanase, 162 U of β-glucanase, and 2,000 U of protease per kg of diet, and guaranteed minimum activities of 1,000 U of α-amylase and 25 U of pectinase per kg of diet. Three isocaloric-nitrogenous diets based on corn and soybean meal with 0% (control) or 30% distillers' dried grains with solubles (DDGS; 1:1 corn and wheat mixture; HF) and HF supplemented with MC (HF + MC) were used. Five gilts (initial BW = 22.8 ± 1.6 kg) fitted with permanent catheters in the portal vein and carotid artery (for blood sampling), and ileal vein (to infuse para-amino hippuric acid to measure blood flow rate) were fed the 3 diets at 4% BW once daily at 0900 h for 7 d in a replicated 3 × 3 Latin square design. On d 7, pigs were placed in an open-circuit indirect calorimeter to measure whole-animal O consumption and sample blood for 7 h postprandial. Net glucose and insulin production were calculated from portal-arterial differences × portal blood flow, and PDV O consumption was calculated as arterial-portal O differences × portal blood flow. Diet had no effect on postprandial whole-animal O consumption, flow rate, and lactate flux. In addition, diet had no effect on overall mean postprandial PDV O consumption. Pigs fed control had greater ( < 0.05) portal insulin and glucose fluxes, from 90 to 300 min and net glucose flux from 90 to 240 min postprandial. However, pigs fed control and HF + MC had similar net glucose flux, which was greater ( < 0.05) than in pigs fed the HF diet. In conclusion, diets did not affect the energetic demand of the PDV but adding MC to the HF diet improved postprandial net glucose portal flux in growing pigs.

Abstract
With the continued rise in feline obesity, novel weight management strategies are needed. To date, strategies aimed at altering physical activity, an important factor in weight maintenance, have been lacking. Photoperiod is known to cause physiological changes in seasonal mammals, including changes in body weight (BW) and reproductive status. Thus, our objective was to determine the effect of increased photoperiod (longer days) on voluntary physical activity levels, resting metabolic rate (RMR), food intake required to maintain BW, and fasting serum leptin and ghrelin concentrations in adult cats. Eleven healthy, adult, neutered, male domestic shorthair cats were used in a randomized crossover design study. During two 12-week periods, cats were exposed to either a short-day (SD) photoperiod of 8 h light: 16 h dark or a long-day (LD) photoperiod of 16 h light: 8 h dark. Cats were fed a commercial diet to maintain baseline BW. In addition to daily food intake and twice-weekly BW, RMR (via indirect calorimetry), body composition [via dual-energy X-ray absorptiometry (DEXA)] and physical activity (via Actical activity monitors) were measured at week 0 and 12 of each period. Fasting serum leptin and ghrelin concentrations were measured at week 0, 6 and 12 of each period. Average hourly physical activity was greater (p = 0.008) in LD vs. SD cats (3770 vs. 3129 activity counts/h), which was primarily due to increased (p < 0.001) dark period activity (1188 vs. 710 activity counts/h). This corresponded to higher (p < 0.0001) daily metabolizable energy intake (mean over 12-week period: 196 vs. 187 kcal/day), and increased (p = 0.048) RMR in LD cats (9.02 vs. 8.37 kcal/h). Body composition, serum leptin and serum ghrelin were not altered by photoperiod. More research is needed to determine potential mechanisms by which these physiological changes occurred and how they may apply to weight management strategies.

Abstract
REASONS FOR PERFORMING STUDY Recombinant human erythropoietin (rhuEPO) causes an increase in red blood cell production and aerobic capacity in other species; however, data are lacking on effects in the horse. HYPOTHESIS This study tested the hypothesis that rhuEPO administration would alter red cell volume (RCV), aerobic capacity (VO2max) and indices of anaerobic power. METHODS Eight healthy, unfit mares accustomed to the laboratory and experimental protocols were randomly assigned to either a control (CON, n = 4; 3 ml saline 3 times/week for 3 weeks) or EPO group (EPO, n = 4, 50 iu/kg bwt rhuEPO/3 ml saline 3 times/week for 3 weeks). Exercise tests (GXT) were performed on a treadmill (6% incline), 1 week before and 1 week after treatment. The GXT started at 4 m/sec, with a 1 m/sec increase every 60 sec until the horse reached fatigue. Oxygen uptake was measured via an open flow indirect calorimeter. Blood samples were collected before, during (each step) and 2 and 15 min post GXT to measure packed cell volume (PCV), haemoglobin concentration (Hb), blood lactate concentration (LA) and plasma protein concentration (TP). Plasma volume (PV) was measured using Evans Blue dye. Blood volume (BV) and RCV were calculated using PCV from the 8 m/sec step of the GXT. RESULTS There were no alterations (P>0.05) in any parameters in CON horses. By week 3, EPO produced increases (P<0.05) in resting PCV (37 +/- 2 vs. 51 +/- 2) and Hb (37%). RCV (26%) and VO2max (19%) increased, but BV did not change (P>0.05) due to decreased PV (-11%, P<0.05). There was a significant increase in velocity at VO2max and LApeak for horses treated with rhuEPO and substantial decrease (P<0.05) in VO2 recovery time when the pretreatment GXT was compared to the post treatment GXT. No differences (P<0.05) were detected for TP, VLA4, run time or Vmax. CONCLUSIONS Low dose rhuEPO administration increases RCV and aerobic capacity without altering anaerobic power. POTENTIAL RELEVANCE This study demonstrates that rhuEPO enhances aerobic capacity and exercise performance, a question relevant to racing authorities.

Abstract
Research has shown that broiler chickens reared on a low-protein diet have a more efficient protein digestion. However, information on the fate of absorbed amino acids in relation to the dietary crude protein level in poultry is sparse. Therefore, this study aimed at developing a methodology for a 1-(13)C(1)-leucine breath test combined with indirect calorimetry, and to apply this technique using broiler diets known to induce differences in protein retention. From 14 days of age onwards, broiler chickens were reared on one of two isocaloric diets with substitutions between fat and protein [low-protein (LP) vs. high-protein (HP) diet: 130.4 vs. 269 g protein/kg; and 101.8 vs. 27.9 g fat/kg]. Every 4 or 5 days, three chickens per diet were placed in the respiratory cells for 48 h. The broilers were intubated with 40 mg 1-(13)C(1)-leucine/kg body weight, followed by breath sampling for 4 h at 15-min intervals and mass spectrometric analysis of the (13)C:(12)C ratio in the samples. The CO(2) level in the respiratory cell air was monitored and excreta samples were collected. The methodology to study l[1-(13)C(1)]leucine decarboxyation in chickens using a breath test combined with indirect calorimetry was accomplished. Results of the nitrogen balance test indicated that the LP broilers had an improved dietary protein retention compared with the HP animals. Moreover, LP chickens decarboxylated a significantly lower percentage of l[1-(13)C(1)]leucine, demonstrating several 'protein- or amino acid-sparing' mechanisms in animals reared on a diet with lower protein level, both at the digestive and at the postabsorptive level.

Abstract
Measurements of nitrogen, carbon and energy balances were done on eight female adult cats aged approximately 1.5 years with the help of respiration chambers. The cats were fed with a marked dry food for kittens (Biomill kitten). Faeces and urine samples were collected with the help of a special cat toilet that allows the single collection of both materials. The calculated energy requirement of these eight female cats was 239.6 kJ ME/kg BW/day (R(2) = 0.98). Including the data, on 12 young male adult cats, of Läuger, (2001), an energy requirement of 238 kJ ME/kg BW/day (R(2) = 0.95) could be calculated. From these data, it can be followed that the energy requirements of young, active cats are higher than that of the older cats. The method of indirect calorimetry does not necessarily lead to lower energy requirements.

Abstract
Late gestation energy expenditure (EE(gest)) originates from energy expenditure (EE) of development of conceptus (EE(conceptus)) and EE of homeorhetic adaptation of metabolism (EE(homeorhetic)). Even though EE(gest) is relatively easy to quantify, its partitioning is problematic. In the present study metabolizable energy (ME) intake ranges for twin-bearing ewes were 220-440, 350- 700, 350-900 kJ per metabolic body weight (W0.75) at week seven, five, two pre-partum respectively. Indirect calorimetry and a linear regression approach were used to quantify EE(gest) and then partition to EE(conceptus) and EE(homeorhetic). Energy expenditure of basal metabolism of the non-gravid tissues (EE(bmng)), derived from the intercept of the linear regression equation of retained energy [kJ/W0.75] and ME intake [kJ/W(0.75)], was 298 [kJ/ W0.75]. Values of the intercepts of the regression equations at week seven, five, and two pre-partum were 311, 398, and 451 [kJ/W0.75], respectively. The difference between the intercepts for different weeks was used to calculate EE(homeorhetic). The remaining part of EE(gest) was considered to be EE(conceptus). In conclusion, the good agreement between our values of EE(conceptus) and those in the literature indicates the method's validity.

Abstract
The objective of this study was to estimate the effect of increasing the dietary content of bacterial protein meal (BPM) on energy and protein metabolism in growing mink kits. Sixteen male mink kits of the standard brown genotype were randomly fed one of four diets: A control (Diet I) based on high-quality fish meal, and three experimental diets in which 20% (Diet II), 40% (Diet III) and 60% (Diet IV) of the digested nitrogen (DN) was replaced with BPM. Nitrogen balance and respiration experiments (indirect calorimetry) were carried out when the animals were approximately 9.5, 14.5, 17.5, 23.5 and 28.5 weeks of age. The apparent digestibility of crude protein and energy decreased significantly with increasing dietary BPM. The retained nitrogen was 0.45, 0.54, 0.52 and 0.40 g/kg0.75 on Diets I, II, III and IV, respectively, the observed differences between diets being non-significant (p = 0.06). Heat production (HE) was between 645 and 665 kJ/kg0.75 on all diets (p = 0.78). Retained energy (RE) was approximately 150-160 kJ/kg0.75 on Diets I to III, whereas it was -11 kJ/kg0.75 on Diet IV, the differences being significant (p< 0.001). A lower feed intake and apparent digestibility of energy caused the negative RE on Diet IV. The amount of HE from oxidation of protein decreased from 32.7% on Diet I to 26.6% on Diet IV, and oxidation of fat increased from 53.8% on Diet I to 63.5% Diet IV. In conclusion, protein and energy metabolism remained unaffected when up to 40% of DN was derived from BPM.

Abstract
In this study, we aimed to define the effects of anesthesia and surgery on the resting energy expenditure of horses in experimental conditions. Six horses were used in a longitudinal study with 2 study periods: before and after anesthesia and surgery. Every horse underwent a standard 90-min ventral midline exploratory laparotomy. Oxygen uptake (VO2) and carbon dioxide output (VCO2) were measured, with the use of a closed-circuit spirometry system, on 5 consecutive days immediately before and after the surgery. In 3 consecutive 5-min periods each day, the expired air was collected in a Collins spirometer. Samples of the expired gas were drawn from the spirometer through a drying column into O2 and CO2 analyzers. Resting energy expenditure was calculated as [(VO2 STPD*3.94) + (VCO2 STPD*1.11)]*1.44. This study showed that anesthesia and ventral midline exploratory laparotomy in experimental conditions increase the postoperative caloric demand in horses by an average of 1.0 Mcal/d, which represents approximately a 10% increase (P = 0.03). Additional studies in critically ill horses after surgery are needed to determine their caloric needs and to optimize their nutritional management.

Abstract
A high dietary fat intake may be an important environmental factor leading to obesity in some animals. The mechanism could be either an increase in caloric intake and/or a decrease in energy expenditure. To test the hypothesis that high fat diets result in decreased resting energy expenditure (REE), we measured REE using indirect calorimetry in 10-adult intact male Labrador Retrievers, eating weight-maintenance high-fat (HF, 41% energy, average daily intake: 8018 +/- 1247 kJ/day, mean +/- SD) and low-fat (LF, 14% energy, average daily intake: 7331 +/- 771 kJ/day) diets for a 30-day period. At the end of each dietary treatment, body composition measurements were performed using dual-energy X-ray absorptiometry. The mean +/- SD REE was not different between diets (4940 +/- 361 vs. 4861 +/- 413 kJ/day on HF and LF diets respectively). Measurements of fat-free mass (FFM) and fat mass (FM) also did not differ between diets (FFM: 26.8 +/- 2.3 kg vs. 26.3 +/- 2.5 kg; FM: 3.0 +/- 2.3 vs. 3.1 +/- 1.5 kg on HF and LF diets respectively). In summary, using a whole body calorimeter, we found no evidence of a decrease in REE or a change in body composition on a HF diet compared with LF diet.

Abstract
The objective of this study was to establish the age at which mink kits develop functional homoeothermy. The investigation was based on the hypothesis that in this species with very immature neonates, late development of homoeothermy may be an adaptation to economize with energy. Measurements of heat production (HE) by means of indirect calorimetry lasting 3 h were performed on neonatal kits and kits from 1 to 54 days of age. Both single kits and groups of 4-5 huddling kits were kept at 15 degrees C (L) or 30 degrees C (H) [from 35 days onwards at 25 degrees C (H)]. Animals were weighed before and after the experiments and evaporative water losses (EWL) were calculated. When exposed to L temperature, single kits responded with a very low HE until 29 days of age, and groups of kits until 14 days of age. It was not until they reached an age of approximately 6 weeks that single kits showed a clear thermoregulatory response to the L temperature by increased HE, whereas groups of kits showed increased HE from 29th day onwards. When kept at H temperature, HE was low initially, but all kits showed elevated HE at 8 days of age, and the metabolic rate was similar for single kits and kits huddling in groups. Evaporative water losses was higher among single than among groups of kits and slightly lower but more variable for animals at L than at H temperature. It was concluded that mink kits develop functional homoeothermy at an age of close to 6 weeks and that the failure of very young kits to thermoregulate is an adaptation mechanism in order to economise with their very limited body energy reserves.

Abstract
Ghrelin injection, either centrally or peripherally strongly stimulates feeding in human and rodents. In contrast, centrally injected ghrelin inhibits food intake in neonatal chickens. No information is available about the mechanism and its relationship with energy homeostasis in chicken. Since ghrelin is predominantly produced in the stomach, we investigated the effect of peripherally injected ghrelin (1 nmol/100g body weight) on food intake and energy expenditure as measured in respiratory cells by indirect calorimetry for 24h in one-week-old chickens. Plasma glucose, triglycerides, free fatty acids, total protein and T(3) were measured in a separate experiment until 60 min after injection. Food intake decreased until at least 1h after intravenous ghrelin administration. The respiratory quotient (RQ) in ghrelin-injected chickens was reduced until 14 h after administration whereas plasma glucose and triglycerides concentrations were not altered. Free fatty acids and total protein levels also remained unchanged. Ghrelin did not influence heat production and this was supported by the absence of changes in plasma T(3) levels when compared to the control values. In conclusion, peripheral ghrelin reduces food intake as well as RQ and might influence the type of substrate (macronutrient) that is used as metabolic fuel.

Abstract
OBJECTIVE To evaluate energy expenditure (EE) in dogs by estimating rate of CO2 production (rCO2). ANIMALS 15 Beagles. PROCEDURE Food was withheld for 24 hours, and all dogs received an IV infusion of 13C sodium bicarbonate for 8 hours. Breath samples were collected before infusion and at 30-minute intervals from 4 to 8 hours, and 13C enrichment in breath CO2 was measured, using gas chromatography-isotopic ratio mass spectrometry. Food was withheld from 6 dogs, and rCO2 and O2 consumption were measured, using a conventional indirect calorimeter. The CO2 production and O2 consumption were measured by use of indirect calorimetry in 6 other fed dogs that were injected with 2H2O and H2(18)O. Blood samples were collected before tracer injection, 4 hours later, and on days 4, 7, and 11. Deuterium and 18O enrichments in plasma water were determined. RESULTS Mean rCO2 measured by indirect calorimetry was 516 +/- 34 and 410 +/- 16 micromol/kg(0.75)/min in 6 fed and 6 food-deprived dogs, respectively. The rCO2 calculated from 13C-bicarbonate dilution was 482 +/- 30 micromol/kg(0.75)/min. Mean rCO2 determined by use of the double-labeled water method was 1,036 +/- 46 mmol/kg(0.75)/d. Mean energy expenditure calculated from rCO2 determined by infusion of 13C bicarbonate, indirect calorimetry in fed and food-deprived dogs, and infusion of double-labeled water was 386 +/- 39, 379 +/- 25, 338 +/- 14, and 552 +/- 25 kJ/kg(0.75)/d, respectively. CONCLUSIONS AND CLINICAL RELEVANCE Energy expenditure calculated by indirect calorimetry in unfed dogs can be considered representative of basal metabolic rate.

Abstract
Energy metabolism and substrate oxidation was measured in 12 growing pigs by means of indirect calorimetry and nutrient balances. The measurements were carried out during 5 days of feeding followed by 4 days of starvation and 5 days of re-feeding. During the feeding period, dietary carbohydrates were the main energy source, sufficient to cover energy requirements without oxidation of fat. Starvation reduced the total heat production and affected the oxidation pattern by reducing protein oxidation and shifting from carbohydrate to fat oxidation. On the second day of starvation, the main energy source was body fat and there was no oxidation of carbohydrate. On the second day of re-feeding, the heat production reached the same level as during the feeding period. Also, during the second day of re-feeding, the pattern of nutrient oxidation was similar to the feeding period with oxidation of carbohydrate providing 90% and oxidation of protein providing 10% of the total heat production. There was no fat oxidation. The results demonstrated that the growing pigs were able to re-establish oxidative patterns already 2 days after re-alimentation.

Abstract
OBJECTIVE To determine the level of clinical agreement between 2 methods for the measurement of resting energy expenditure (REE). DESIGN Prospective case series. ANIMALS 77 dogs. PROCEDURE Oxygen consumption (Vo2) and CO2 production (Vco2) were measured with an open-flow indirect calorimeter in healthy (n = 10) and ill (67) dogs. Measurements were collected at 3 time periods on 2 days. The Vo2 and the Vco2 measurements were then used to calculate the REE values. RESULTS Mean values of measured (MREE) and predicted (PREE) REEs in healthy dogs and a dog with medical illnesses or trauma were not significantly different. There was a significant difference on day 2 between the MREE and PREE in the group of dogs recovering from major surgery. More importantly, there was significant variation between the PREE and MREE on an individual-dog basis. The PREE only agreed to within +/- 20% of the MREE in 51% to 57% of the dogs. CONCLUSIONS AND CLINICAL RELEVANCE The level of agreement between these two methods for determining the 24-hour REE was poor in individual dogs. The level of disagreement between the 2 methods indicates that these methods may not be used interchangeably in a clinical setting. Measurement of REE by use of indirect calorimetry may be the only reliable method of determining REE in an individual ill or healthy dog.

Abstract
Twelve multiparous sows with an average initial weight of 182 kg were used in a randomized complete block design to determine the effects of feeding Carnichrome (50 mg of carnitine and 200 microg of chromium picolinate per kilogram of feed, as fed) on energy and nitrogen utilization in early, mid-, and late gestation. All sows were fed a diet with or without Carnichrome for the preceding 28-d lactation, the weaning-to-estrus period, and for the duration of gestation. Daily feeding allowances over pregnancy were based on calculated energy and nutrient requirements to achieve a target sow maternal weight gain of 20 kg and remained constant throughout gestation. Heat production (HP) and its partitioning (activity, thermic effect of feeding short term [TEFst], basal) were determined in early (wk 5 or 6), mid- (wk 9 or 10), and late (wk 14 or 15) pregnancy using indirect calorimetry. Net maternal weight gain and total number of fetuses averaged 21.6 kg and 16.4, respectively. Organic matter and energy digestibility for the Carnichrome diet was greater (P < 0.05), which resulted in greater DE and ME contents (0.6%, P < 0.05) compared with the control diet. The digestibility coefficient of energy in the current experiment for a typical corn and soybean meal diet (92%) was greater than that predicted from DE values of corn and soybean meal in feeding tables (88%). Carnichrome had no effect on total HP, energy retained as protein or lipid, and maternal energy retention in early, mid-, or late gestation. Heat production in late gestation increased linearly (4.0 kJ/[kg BW0.75 x d]) for each additional day from d 90 to 110, despite the reduction of ME intake per unit of BW0.75. Metabolizable energy requirement for maintenance was 405 kJ/(kg BW0.75 x d). On average, activity HP was 116 kJ/(kg BW0.75 x d), which was equivalent to 20% of ME intake; however, this value ranged from 11 to 37% between sows, which corresponds to duration of standing ranging from 210 to 490 min/d. Energy cost of standing activity averaged 0.30 kJ/(kg BW0.75 x min). In conclusion, Carnichrome had no effect on the components of heat production and maternal weight gain during gestation, although it improved energy and organic matter digestibility of the diet.

Abstract
Four Duroc x White composite crossbred (21.8 +/- 1.0 kg BW) and four 12-wk-old Meishan purebred (20.7 +/- 1.6 kg BW) growing barrows were used to determine the relative breed differences in metabolic and microbial responses to a high-fiber diet. The pigs were trained to consume 700 g of a diet containing 35% (as-fed basis) dehydrated alfalfa meal once daily. The pigs' daily intakes of DM, N, GE, NDF, and ADF were 610 g, 16.6 g, 2.64 Mcal, 150 g, and 88 g, respectively. On d 12 after surgical catheterization of the portal vein, ileal vein, and carotid artery, a 3-d total urine and feces collection was conducted. On d 24 after surgery, each pig was placed in an open-circuit calorimeter, and its catheters were connected to a system for simultaneous measurements of oxygen consumption by portal-drained viscera and by whole body, and the net portal absorption of VFA after a 24-h fasting and during a 5-h postprandial period. The VFA measured included acetic, propionic, isobutyric, butyric, isovaleric, and valeric acids. A second 3-d total urine and feces collection was conducted on d 30 after surgery. There were no differences (P = 0.13) between the first and second collections in apparent total-tract digestibility coefficients for nutrients and N retention of pigs. Compared with Duroc x White composite crossbred pigs, Meishan pigs had lower (P = 0.05) apparent digestibility coefficients for DM, N, NDF, hemicellulose, and N retention, but their portal-drained viscera used a greater (P = 0.05) fraction of whole-body oxygen consumption. No differences (P = 0.12) were found between Duroc x White composite crossbred and Meishan pigs in total viable bacteria and cellulolytic bacteria from fecal samples, in vitro digestibility of alfalfa NDF fractions by fecal inocula, whole-body oxygen consumption, net portal absorption of VFA, total energy of absorbed VFA, and the potential of absorbed VFA for meeting the energy needs for whole-body heat production. These results indicate that, in contrast to previous beliefs, the ability of Meishan growing pigs to utilize a high-fiber diet is not superior to that of Duroc x White composite crossbred growing pigs.

Abstract
OBJECTIVE To determine whether a full-body spandex garment would alter rectal temperatures of healthy dogs at rest in cool and warm environments. DESIGN Prospective study. ANIMALS 10 healthy dogs. PROCEDURES Each dog was evaluated at a low (20 degrees to 25 degrees C [68 degrees to 77 degrees F]) or high (30 degrees to 35 degrees C [86 degrees to 95 degrees F]) ambient temperature while wearing or not wearing a commercially available whole-body spandex garment designed for dogs. Oxygen consumption was measured by placing dogs in a flow-through indirect calorimeter for 90 to 120 minutes. Rectal temperature was measured before dogs were placed in the calorimeter and after they were removed. RESULTS Rectal temperature increased significantly more at the higher ambient temperature than at the lower temperature and when dogs were not wearing the garment than when they were wearing it. The specific rate of oxygen consumption was significantly higher at the lower ambient temperature than at the higher temperature. CONCLUSIONS AND CLINICAL RELEVANCE Results suggest that wearing a snug spandex body garment does not increase the possibility that dogs will overheat while in moderate ambient temperatures. Instead, wearing such a garment may enable dogs to better maintain body temperature during moderate heat loading. These results suggest that such garments might be used for purposes such as wound or suture protection without causing dogs to overheat.

Abstract
The first objective of this study was to test how well a function that was developed to describe heat production (HP) in growing ewes fit HP data in growing heifers. The second objective was to determine the pattern of adaptation of HP to feed restriction and subsequent realimentation of nutrients. At 234.5 +/- 0.5 d of age, HP was determined by indirect calorimetry on 32 Meat Animal Research Center III heifers. Following the first calorimetry measurement, heifers on the High-High (HH) treatment continued to receive ad libitum access to feed, and daily feed offered to the Low-High (LH) heifers was set at 157 Mcal of ME/kg of BW0.75. Feed restriction of LH heifers continued for 84 d. After 84 d of restriction, LH heifers were allowed ad libitum access to feed. Heat production was determined 4 and 11 wk following feed restriction and 2, 5, 12, and 18 wk following realimentation. There was no residual bias when HP in ad libitum-fed heifers was estimated with an equation form developed in growing ewes: [(kcal/d) = f(BW, matBW) = BW (Ae[k(BW/mature BW)])], nor was there a residual bias when HP was predicted with an allometric equation: [(kcal/d) = f(BW) = A(BWk)]. However, there were residual biases when HP was estimated with an allometric equation that set the exponent to 0.75. Heat production per unit of BW of LH heifers was lower than that of HH heifers at 4 wk of feed restriction (P < 0.001), but HP did not differ between treatments at 11 wk of feed restriction (P = 0.87). At 2 (P = 0.002) and 5 wk (P < 0.001) following the increase in feed offered, HP per unit of BW of the LH heifers was greater than that of the HH heifers. Heat production did not differ between treatments at 12 and 18 wk following refeeding (P < 0.17). Our findings demonstrate that the relationship between HP and BW is described equally well by a logistic and allometric function, but applying a generalized interspecies exponent in an allometric equation to growing heifers results in a bias in estimating HP. The equation form developed in ewes can be used to develop a single equation for the prediction of HP across ages in heifers.

Abstract
OBJECTIVE To evaluate effects of sedation on stability of resistance of the respiratory system (RRS) and measures of resting energy expenditure (REE) by use of open-flow indirect calorimetry (IC) and treatment with aerosolized albuterol on REE in horses with recurrent airway obstruction (RAO). ANIMALS 9 clinically normal horses and 8 horses with RAO. PROCEDURE In phase 1, RRS was measured by using forced oscillometry (FOT) in 5 clinically normal horses before and after sedation with xylazine. In phase 2, REE was measured in 4 clinically normal horses between 20 and 25 minutes and again 35 to 40 minutes after sedation with xylazine. In phase 3, IC was performed between 20 and 25 minutes and FOT was performed between 30 and 35 minutes after xylazine administration in 8 horses with RAO; after administration of 450 microg of albuterol, IC and FOT were repeated. RESULTS In phase 1, RRS values were significantly lower 5 and 10 minutes after sedation. In phase 2, diminishing sedation did not significantly affect REE. In phase 3, there was a significant decrease in mean RRS (1.15 +/- 0.25 vs 0.84 +/- 0.14 cm H20/L/s) and REE (30.68 +/- 17.89 vs 27.46 = 16.54 kcal/kg/d) after albuterol administration. CONCLUSIONS AND CLINICAL RELEVANCE FOT and IC are useful in obtaining repeatable measurements of RRS and REE, respectively, in sedated horses. Concurrent bronchodilation and decreased REE after albuterol administration suggest that increased work of breathing as a result of airway obstruction may contribute to increased energy demands in horses with RAO.

Abstract
The hypothesis of this study is that ewes that have equal body weights, but differ in chronological age due to nutrient restriction, do not differ in metabolic rate. The objective of this study was to determine how reducing growth rate nutritionally alters the relationship between heat production per unit body weight and aging. Fasting heat production of 12 Dorset ewe lambs at 114 +/- 2 d of age was determined, and ewes were assigned to treatments. Treatments consisted of two different feeding levels of the same diet (ME = 2.5 Mcal/kg DM and 16.6% CP). The High treatment was offered 4.5% of their weekly BW per day, and the Low treatment was offered 2.5% of their weekly BW per day. Each treatment consisted of six animals that remained within treatment for the remainder of the study. Indirect-calorimetry measurements were repeated every 6 wk. Treatments differed in both the linear and quadratic term for fasted BW on age (P < 0.001). The rate of BW gain decreased as ewes aged in the High treatment, and the rate of BW gain increased as ewes aged in the Low treatment. The heat production:BW (HP:BW) ratio decreased in the High treatment as ewes aged and was described well by a previously reported prediction equation, but the ratio in the Low treatment was not described by this same equation. Describing the HP:BW ratio on age response with treatment-specific decay functions fit the data better than the pooled treatment function (P < 0.001). The HP:BW ratio decreased rapidly in the Low treatment following feed restriction, but remained elevated compared to the High treatment as animals aged. After excluding the initial measurements in the Low treatment that were taken before nutritional treatments were imposed, the HP:BW ratio was best described by a linear decrease. In conclusion, this study suggests that a previous model taking into account proportion of mature body size is a reasonable predictor for heat production across breeds of sheep growing in nutritionally adequate environments; however, it cannot be extended to sheep that are proportionally smaller in their mature BW due to nutritional restriction.

Abstract
OBJECTIVE To assess accuracy and reliability of open-flow indirect calorimetry in dogs. ANIMALS 13 clinically normal dogs. PROCEDURE In phase 1, oxygen consumption per kilogram of body weight (VO2/kg) was determined in 6 anesthetized dogs by use of open-flow indirect calorimetry before and after determination of VO2/kg by use of closed-circuit spirometry. In phase 2, four serial measurements of VO2 and carbon dioxide production (VCO2) were obtained in 7 awake dogs by use of indirect calorimetry on 2 consecutive days. Resting energy expenditure (REE) was calculated. RESULTS Level of clinical agreement was acceptable between results of indirect calorimetry and spirometry. Mean VO2/kg determined by use of calorimetry before spirometry was significantly greater than that obtained after spirometry. In phase 2, intraclass correlation coefficients (ICC) for REE and VO2 were 0.779 and 0.786, respectively, when data from all 4 series were combined. When the first series was discounted, ICC increased to 0.904 and 0.894 for REE and VO2, respectively. The most reliable and least variable measures of REE and VO2 were obtained when the first 2 series were discounted. CONCLUSIONS AND CLINICAL RELEVANCE Open-flow indirect calorimetry may be used clinically to obtain a measure of VO2 and an estimate of REE in dogs. Serial measurements of REE and VO2 in clinically normal dogs are reliable, but a 10-minute adaption period should be allowed, the first series of observations should be discounted, multiple serial measurements should be obtained, and REE.

Abstract
1. Male turkeys were reared to 6 weeks of age at 15 degrees C and 26 degrees C and fed ad libitum or restricted to 0.5 of the body weight of birds fed ad libitum. Basal metabolic rate was determined by indirect calorimetry at an ambient temperature of 20 degrees C. 2. Turkeys at 15 degrees C were lighter than those kept at 26 degrees C. Feather lengths and weight were similar in both groups. Fasting heat production corrected for both metabolic body size and activity was greater in turkeys reared at 15 degrees C than those at 26 degrees C. 3. Cranial breast feathers were significantly longer in restricted birds than in those fed ad libitum in contrast to a proportional decrease in the lengths of other feathers of 0.1 to 0.3. Feather weight as a proportion of body weight was 0.072 in restricted turkeys compared with 0.046 in birds fed ad libitum. There was no difference in basal metabolic rate between ad libitum and restricted turkeys. 4. It was concluded that feather growth was maintained in preference to body and muscle growth and that rearing birds at 15 degrees C did not improve breast feather cover. It is suggested that the growth of breast feathers in turkeys fed ad libitum is impaired.

Abstract
OBJECTIVE To evaluate changes in resting energy expenditure (REE) as well as protein and carbohydrate metabolism in dogs with osteosarcoma (OSA). ANIMALS 15 weight-stable dogs with OSA that did not have other concurrent metabolic or endocrine illness and twelve 1-year-old sexually intact female Beagles (control dogs). PROCEDURES Indirect calorimetry was performed on all dogs to determine REE and respiratory quotient (RQ). Stable isotope tracers (15N-glycine, 4.5 mg/kg of body weight, IV; 6,6-deuterium-glucose, 4.5 mg/kg, IV as a bolus, followed by continuous-rate infusion at 1.5 mg/kg/h for 3 hours) were used to determine rate of protein synthesis and glucose flux in all dogs. Dual-energy x-ray absorptiometry (DEXA) scans were performed to determine total body composition. RESULTS Accounting for metabolic body size, REE in dogs with OSA was significantly higher before and after surgery, compared with REE of healthy control dogs. The RQ values did not differ significantly between groups. Dogs with OSA also had decreased rates of protein synthesis, increased urinary nitrogen loss, and increased glucose flux during the postoperative period. CONCLUSIONS AND CLINICAL RELEVANCE Alterations in energy expenditure, protein synthesis, urinary nitrogen loss, and carbohydrate flux were evident in dogs with OSA, similar to results documented in humans with neoplasia. Changes were documented in REE as well as protein and carbohydrate metabolism in dogs with OSA. These changes were evident even in dogs that did not have clinical signs of cachexia.

Abstract
Three trials were conducted to measure the effects of reducing the dietary CP content on digestive and metabolic utilization of N and energy in growing pigs. Sixty barrows weighing about 65 kg were used. In Trial 1, four semisynthetic diets with CP content decreasing from 18.9 to 12.3% were formulated. In Trials 2 and 3, two diets with 17.4 and 13.9% CP were formulated using conventional ingredients. In the three trials, diets were supplemented with variable amounts of industrial AA in order to maintain a constant standardized digestible lysine/NE ratio (0.76 g/MJ) and ratios between essential AA relative to lysine of at least 60, 65, 20, 60, and 70% for methionine + cystine, threonine, tryptophan, isoleucine, and valine, respectively. In Trials 1 and 2, feed was given in four meals per day, whereas, in Trial 3, two feeding frequencies (two and seven meals per day) were compared. Five or six N and energy balance (indirect calorimetry) measurements were conducted for each treatment, and components of heat production were estimated. Results of Trial 3 showed no effect of meal frequency on either N or energy utilization. Reduction of dietary CP content had no effect on N retention or animal performance but markedly decreased N excretion (-40% in Trials 2 and 3, and -58% in Trial 1). In the three trials, the lower N excretion with low-CP diets was accompanied by a reduction in urinary energy loss equivalent to 3.5 kJ/g of decrease in protein intake. Data of the three trials indicated that heat production was lower when CP was reduced (-7 kJ/g decrease in protein intake). This lower heat production was attributed to a reduction of the thermic effect of feed, whereas heat production associated with physical activity and maintenance were not affected. Reduction of dietary CP was associated with higher energy gain, mainly as fat. But, this effect was no longer significant when data were adjusted for similar NE intakes. These results confirm the possibility of limiting N excretion, while maintaining a high level of performance, by reducing CP level in the feed with adequate AA supplementation. This study also confirms the superiority of the NE system (in comparison with DE or ME systems) for predicting performance and energy gain of pigs and controlling carcass adiposity, especially in situations of feeds with variable CP contents.

Abstract
OBJECTIVE To determine effects of various diets on the pharmacokinetics of phenobarbital and the interactive effects of changes in body composition and metabolic rate. DESIGN Prospective study. ANIMALS 27 healthy sexually intact adult female Beagles. PROCEDURE Pharmacokinetic studies of phenobarbital were performed before and 2 months after dogs were fed 1 of 3 diets (group 1, maintenance diet; group 2, protein-restricted diet; group 3, fat- and protein-restricted diet) and treated with phenobarbital (approx 3 mg/kg [1.4 mg/lb] of body weight, p.o., q 12 h). Pharmacokinetic studies involved administering phenobarbital (15 mg/kg [6.8 mg/lb], i.v.) and collecting blood samples at specific intervals for 240 hours. Effects of diet and time were determined by repeated-measures ANOVA. RESULTS Volume of distribution, mean residence time, and half-life (t1/2) of phenobarbital significantly decreased, whereas clearance rate and elimination rate significantly increased with time in all groups. Dietary protein or fat restriction induced significantly greater changes: t1/2 (hours) was lower in groups 2 (mean +/- SD; 25.9 +/- 6.10 hours) and 3 (24.0 +/- 4.70) than in group 1 (32.9 +/- 5.20). Phenobarbital clearance rate (ml/kg/min) was significantly higher in group 3 (0.22 +/- 0.05 ml/kg/min) than in groups 1 (0.17 +/- 0.03) or 2 (0.18 +/- 0.03). Induction of serum alkaline phosphatase activity (U/L) was greater in groups 2 (192.4 +/- 47.5 U/L) and 3 (202.0 +/- 98.2) than in group 1 (125.0 +/- 47.5). CONCLUSIONS AND CLINICAL RELEVANCE Clinically important differences between diet groups were observed regarding pharmacokinetics of phenobarbital, changes in CBC and serum biochemical variables, and body composition. Drug dosage must be reevaluated if a dog's diet, body weight, or body composition changes during treatment. Changes in blood variables that may indicate liver toxicosis caused by phenobarbital may be amplified by diet-drug interactions.

Abstract
The objective of this experiment was to investigate the effect of cow body condition score on fasting heat production. Twelve nonpregnant, nonlactating Holstein-Friesian cows were selected from within the dairy herd at the Agricultural Research Institute of Northern Ireland. Six of these animals (group A) had condition scores > or = 4.5, and the remainder (group B) had condition scores <2. All cows were offered dried grass pellets at estimated maintenance energy level (0.58 MJ of metabolizable energy/kg(0.75)) for a minimum of 21 d. The diet also supplied 2.5 times the metabolizable protein requirement for maintenance. Following this, each cow underwent a 5-d fast in open circuit respiration calorimeters during which fasting heat production (FHP) was measured. On completion of measurement, group A was fed to reduce condition score (CS) below 2, while group B was fed to raise each individual condition score above 4.5. When the appropriate condition scores were achieved, dried grass pellets were again offered at maintenance for a minimum of 21 d, and fasting heat production was measured. It was observed that fasting heat production (MJ/kg(0.75)) was significantly higher for cows with low body condition (<2; ultrasonic fat depth < or = 2.9 mm) compared with cows displaying high body condition (> or = 4.5; ultrasonic fat depth > or = 8.2 mm). A linear relationship between condition score and fasting heat production (MJ/kg(0.75)) was defined by regression analysis as; FHP (MJ/kg(0.75)) = 0.501(SE 0.0121) - 0.030CS (SE 0.0035).

Abstract
Four groups (CS,CR,PS,PR) of nine trained male racing pigeons were deprived of feed for 1 d and then subjected to a respiration chamber test in order to study the effect of oral 1-carnitine supplementation on the energy metabolism during flight. One week before, groups CS and CR were orally supplemented with 90 mg of 1-carnitine daily, whereas PS and PR were given a placebo. Groups CS and PS underwent flight simulation by electrostimulation of the breast muscles. Flight simulation increased heat production, kept respiratory quotient from decreasing, decreased thyroxine levels, and increased weight loss. L-Carnitine decreased the rise in heat production during electrostimulation but did not influence respiratory quotient, weight loss, or thyroid hormones. L-Carnitine supplementation in pigeons improves fatty acid combustion efficiency during heavy exercise.

Abstract
Thirty adult, client-owned dogs were diagnosed with hypothyroidism based on history, physical examination findings, hematologic and biochemical abnormalities, thyrotropin (TSH) response testing, endogenous canine thyrotropin (cTSH) concentration, or both, and total serum thryoxine concentration. All dogs received levothyroxine (L-thyroxine) at an initial dose of 22 micrograms/kg PO sid in either a tablet (13 dogs) or chewable form (17 dogs). Energy expenditure of each dog during apparent rest was estimated with an open-flow indirect calorimetry system by determining the rates of carbon dioxide production and oxygen consumption. Energy expenditure of apparent rest (EE) was lower in untreated hypothyroid dogs compared with reference values for EE. After treatment with L-thyroxine, EE of the hypothyroid dogs was significantly (P < .05) higher than pretreatment values.

Abstract
Measurements of heat production(HP; indirect calorimetry) and its partition between maintenance, physical activity, thermoregulation, and thermic effect of feed or energy gain were carried out in sows maintained in different situations: primiparous or multiparous; pregnant or nonpregnant; thermoneutral or cold conditions; varied feeding levels; and varied body weights (BW). Metabolizable energy requirements for maintenance average 420 kJ/kg BW.75 at thermoneutrality and moderate physical activity. This value is not significantly affected by parity, pregnancy, and stage of pregnancy. Physical activity is a major factor causing differences in energy balance between sows because activity is variable and its energy cost (27 kJ.kg BW-.75.100 min-1 standing) is four to five times higher than in other species. Lower critical temperature (LCT) is approximately 20 degrees C in pregnant and individually housed sows, and daily HP is increased by approximately 15 kJ/kg BW.75 for each degree Celsius decrease of ambient temperature below LCT. Efficiencies of utilization of ME for meeting energy requirements for maintenance, maternal gain, and uterine gain are 77, 75, and 50%, respectively. Equations for predicting energy deposition in the uterus and mammary gland are proposed. In addition to activity and thermoregulation, energy requirements of pregnant sows depend on body reserves of energy. Studies with newborn pigs indicate that they are quite sensitive to ambient temperature (i.e., +25 J.kg BW-.75.min-1 for each degree Celsius decrease of temperature), and their LCT is 32 to 34 degrees C. The energy demand of pigs for thermoregulation just after birth relies mainly on carbohydrates from glycogen reserves or colostrum. Survival of newborn pigs is highly dependent on the supply of colostrum.

Abstract
Heat production was measured in newborn Angus-, Brahman-, and Tuli-sired calves born to Angus (n = 20) and Brahman (n = 26) dams, before (thermoneutral metabolic rate, TMR) and after norepinephrine (NE) infusion (peak metabolic rate, PMR), to assess genotypic effects on nonshivering thermogenesis in brown adipose tissue. Calves were fed pooled colostrum, fitted with jugular catheters, and placed in a temperature-controlled (37 degrees C) water immersion system. Heat production, determined by indirect calorimetry, and tympanic temperature were measured continuously in calves from approximately 3 to 6 h of age. Blood samples were collected at birth and at 0, 5, 20, 40, 60, 80, 100, and 120 min relative to NE infusion (35 micrograms.min-1.kg BW-1 for 4 min), and plasma was analyzed for metabolites (glucose, NEFA, and urea nitrogen [PUN]) and hormones (cortisol, triiodothyronine [T3] and thyroxine [T4]). Weight-specific TMR (cal.min-1.kg-1) was not affected by breed of sire or dam, although weight-specific PMR (cal.min-1.kg-1) was lower (P < .01) in Brahman-sired calves than in Angus- or Tuli-sired calves and was lower (P < .001) in calves born to Brahman rather than Angus dams. The reduction in weight-specific PMR due to the maternal Brahman influence was sire-breed dependent, and the reduction was largest (P < .01) for Tuli-sired (34.3%), intermediate (P < .05) for Brahman-sired (15.1%), and lowest (P > .25) for Angus-sired calves (4.1%). The PMR:TMR ratio was 1.80 and 2.21 +/- .06 in calves born to Brahman and Angus dams, respectively. Peak tympanic temperature was .6 degree C lower (P < .01) in calves born to Brahman rather than Angus dams. At birth, plasma NEFA concentrations were higher (P < .001) and glucose tended (P = .13) to be higher in calves born to Brahman rather than Angus dams. Cortisol, T3, and T4 concentrations at birth were higher in calves born to Brahman dams than in those born to Angus dams. These results suggest that calves born to Brahman dams may have less thermogenically active brown adipose tissue than calves born to Angus dams, which may contribute to the relative cold intolerance of calves with Bos indicus inheritance.

Abstract
We evaluated the combined use of 0 or 4 mg/d of recombinant porcine somatotropin (pST) and 0 or 2.75 ppm salbutamol in three genotypes of growing barrows (139 d old) differing in lean and lipid accretion potential. Treatments were in a 2 x 2 x 3 factorial arrangement, and the three genotypes tested were Meishan (M, n = 32, 49 kg), Duroc x White composite (D x Wc, n = 31, 62 kg), and Meishan x White composite (M x Wc, n = 31, 64 kg) pigs. Growth performance was evaluated over 28 d for individual pigs, and 20-h feed-deprived heat production was measured before slaughter (d 34). Daily pST injection increased ADG (+70 g/d) and reduced ADFI (-.61 kg/d) across genotypes (P < .05). Salbutamol increased (P < .05) ADG in M x Wc pigs (+146 g/d) but not in M pigs (-60 g/d) or D x Wc (+80 g/d) pigs. However, M pigs had the lowest ADG and ADFI, and M x Wc pigs not treated with salbutamol grew slower than D x Wc pigs (P < .05). Carcass protein and moisture accretion were additively (P < .05) increased by pST and salbutamol for D x Wc and M x Wc pigs. Meishan pigs had increased carcass protein and moisture accretion from pST, whereas only moisture accretion was increased by salbutamol (P < .05). The longissimus muscle area and semitendinosus weight increased as the percentage of M in the genotype decreased (P < .05), and both were increased by pST or salbutamol treatment (P < .001). Leaf fat was decreased more (P < .05) in M pigs than in D x Wc or M x Wc pigs with pST injection. The similar magnitude of leaf fat reduction between D x Wc and M x Wc pigs resulted in a mean genotype difference (P < .05), and salbutamol decreased leaf fat across genotypes. Oxygen consumption and heat production were increased by pST in M pigs more than in the crossbred genotypes, but CO2 production was reduced by similar magnitudes across genotypes, and salbutamol only tended to reduce CO2 production in D x Wc pigs. In general, these data indicate that pST and salbutamol result in additive increases in carcass lean composition; however, growth rate, carcass accretion, and various organ weights may vary among genotypes with salbutamol and pST treatment.

Abstract
OBJECTIVE To determine whether apparently resting dogs with nonhematopoietic malignancies have increased resting energy expenditure (REE), compared with clinically normal dogs. ANIMALS 46 client-owned dogs with nonhematopoietic malignancies and 30 client-owned dogs that were clinically normal. PROCEDURE Apparently resting, client-owned dogs with nonhematopoietic malignancies before (n = 46) and 4 to 6 weeks after (n = 30) surgical removal of tumors were compared with apparently resting, clinically normal, client owned dogs (n = 30). An open flow indirect calorimetry system was used to determine the following: rate of oxygen consumption (ml/min/kg of body weight); rate of carbon dioxide production (mls/min/kg), REE (kcal/kg/d) and respiratory quotient. Because of the wide range of body weight, REE and oxygen consumption were also expressed per kg of body weight 0.75. RESULTS Surgical removal of the tumor did not significantly alter any of the variables measured when all dogs with tumors were assessed as a single group, or when the dogs were divided on the basis of having the following types of tumors: carcinomas and sarcomas, osteosarcomas, and mammary adenocarcinomas. None of the data obtained prior to surgical treatment from any of the dogs grouped by tumor type were significantly different from clinically normal dogs. CONCLUSIONS REE (54.4 +/- 16 kcal/kg/d or 125 +/- 19 kcal/kg0.75/d) and, presumably, caloric requirements of dogs with nonhematopoietic malignancies are not significantly different from those obtained from clinically normal dogs (53.9 +/- 16 kcal/kg/d or 116 +/- 32 kcal/kg0.75/d). Furthermore, these variables do not change significantly when the tumor is excised and the dog is reassessed after 4 to 6 weeks. CLINICAL RELEVANCE Knowledge that REE in dogs with solid tumors is not significantly different from REE of clinically normal dogs may be of value when planning nutritional treatment for dogs with nonhematopoietic malignancies.

Abstract
OBJECTIVE To determine energy expenditure (EE) of apparently resting, client-owned dogs with malignant or nonmalignant diseases that were recovering from anesthesia and surgery, and compare those values with values from clinically normal, apparently resting, client owned dogs. ANIMALS 40 apparently resting, client-owned dogs that had been given general anesthesia for various elective and nonelective surgical procedures, and 30 apparently resting, clinically normal client-owned dogs used as controls. PROCEDURE EE was determined, using an open-flow indirect calorimetry system. Each dog was evaluated before and after surgery (0, 1, 2, and 3 days after surgery, then at suture removal > 14 days later) and compared with apparently resting, clinically normal, client-owned dogs (n = 30). Parameters evaluated were rate of oxygen consumption (Vo2/kg of body weight: ml/min/kg; Vo2/kg0.75: ml/min/kg0.75), EE (EE/kg: kcal/kg/d; EE/kg0.75: kcal/kg0.75/d), and respiratory quotient. RESULTS Surgery and anesthesia did not significantly alter any of these parameters at any time assessed in any group. The pretreatment Vo2 and EE were significantly lower in the dogs with cancer, compared with dogs of other groups. CONCLUSIONS These data suggest that the EE of a restricted group of dogs that undergo anesthesia and surgery for malignant and nonmalignant conditions does not increase from baseline values or when compared with values in clinically normal, client-owned dogs. CLINICAL RELEVANCE This information may be of value when planning nutritional treatment for dogs recovering from anesthesia and surgery.

Abstract
1. To determine the effects of heat production on thermoregulatory physiological responses, 5 chickens were forced to walk to increase heat production. The study consisted of two experiments. One involved 3 walking speeds (8, 16 and 24 m/min) at 25 degrees C ambient temperature. The other involved a single walking speed of 16 m/min at 3 ambient temperatures (20, 25 and 30 degrees C). Heat production, heart rate, abdominal temperature, shank skin temperature and respiration rate were measured before, during and after walking. 2. Heat production, heart rate and respiration rate increased abruptly after the start of walking and with increase in walking speed. At the start of walking, an abrupt increase in abdominal temperature occurred independently of walking speed and environmental temperature; then, as walking continued, abdominal temperature increased further with increasing walking speed and increasing environmental temperature. Shank skin temperature declined at the initiation of walking, then increased. 3. Heat production and heart rate recovered rapidly after walking, while shank skin temperature and respiration rate increased and then recovered, except at 30 degrees C. 4. A proportion, 17% to 35%, of the increased heat production was stored, increasing body temperature during walking. After walking, the stored heat was lost by means of panting until abdominal temperature recovered to 41 degrees C or shank skin temperature recovered to 37 degrees C. 5. These results suggest that the greatly-increased heat production attributable to forced walking leads to abrupt thermoregulatory physiological responses, and the heat stored in the body is actively dissipated by panting until abdominal temperature recovers to the pre-walking level. The chief mode of heat loss of birds changes with deep body temperature.

Abstract
OBJECTIVE To use indirect calorimetry to compare heat production between gonadectomized and sexually intact male and female cats. DESIGN Male (n = 6) and female (n = 6) kittens were gonadectomized at 7 weeks or 7 months of age, or left sexually intact. Body heat production was measured by indirect calorimetry in all cats at 12, 18, and 24 months of age. ANIMALS 18 male and 18 female clinically normal domestic shorthair cats. PROCEDURE Heat production was measured, using an open-circuit, respiratory, indirect calorimeter. All cats underwent calorimetry at 12, 18, and 24 months of age. The heat coefficient, a measure of resting metabolic rate, was calculated for each cat at each test; heat coefficient is defined as logarithm of heat (kcal/h) divided by logarithm of body weight (kg). RESULTS Heat production did not vary with age in male or female cats. Heat coefficient was higher in sexually intact male and female cats than in gonadectomized male and female cats at 12, 18, and 24 months of age (12 months, females, P < 0.01, males, P = 0.04; 18 months, females, P < 0.01, males, P = 0.02; and 24 months, females and males, P < 0.01). CONCLUSIONS These data suggest that resting metabolic rate in cats decreases after gonadectomy. CLINICAL RELEVANCE A decrease in metabolic rate is synonymous with a decrease in caloric requirements. Gonadectomized animals fed in a manner similar to sexually intact animals may be predisposed to obesity and its sequelae.

Abstract
Protein and energy utilization and quantitative retention of protein, fat and energy was investigated with 12 Red Danish bulls during two subsequent 6 weeks trials (Sections A and B) at a mean live weight of 195 and 335 kg respectively. Treatments were control (Group 1) and beta-agonist (L-644,969) treated animals (Group 2 and 3). Beta-agonist supplementation was 5 and 10 mg/d in Group 2 and 3 respectively in Section A and 10 and 20 mg/d in Section B. Measurements were performed by means of nitrogen and carbon balances and with use of indirect calorimetry. In each section the mean intake of dry matter, metabolizable energy and digestible protein was of the same magnitude for all groups. The beta-agonist had no significant effect on protein digestibility and metabolizability of energy, but daily live weight gain was significantly higher in the treated bulls. The utilization of digested protein was strongly influenced by treatment, with the highest values for Group 2 in both sections. The protein retention increased with 25% in Group 2, with the highest increment of 113 g/d in Section B. The fat retention decreased in treated animals, most pronounced in Group 3, where the reduction was about 50% with a mean decrease of 145 g/d in Section B. The total energy retention was not different between control animals and Group 2 in both sections, but there was a shift in energy retention from fat to protein. The higher levels of beta-agonist used in Group 3 generated the same increase in protein retention, but fat retention was markedly lower and consequently the total energy retention was reduced.

Abstract
Naturally occurring retroviral infections cause progressive weight loss, immune suppression, invasion by opportunistic organisms, and eventual death. Feline leukemia virus (FeLV) inhibited growth and decreased energy intake in seven experimentally infected weanling cats compared with age- and sex-matched controls. Remarkably, changes in energy intake, energy expenditure, and weight gain occurred in the acute phase of infection prior to the systemic/productive bone marrow phase of FeLV infection. In other words, growth inhibition developed before FeLV infection was clinically detectable with use of standard enzyme-linked immunosorbent assay or fixed-cell immunofluorescence assays of circulating neutrophils and platelets. Acutely infected, previremic cats consumed 25% less energy [Day 4 postinoculation to Day 16 postinoculation (p < 0.05)] and expended 20% less energy [Day 8 postinoculation to Day 18 postinoculation (p < 0.05)] compared with control cats. Growth stunting of inoculated cats began by Day 11 postinoculation (p < 0.05) and was not corrected during the remaining 4 months of the study. Thus, experimental FeLV infection causes perturbations of metabolism and energy balance resulting in permanent growth impairment. Secondly, detrimental metabolic effects begin in the acute phase of retroviral infection, prior to the clinically detectable phase of FeLV infection.

Abstract
The mink is a strict carnivore and a seasonal breeder, which may be used as an experimental model for other carnivores. The present investigation comprised a total of 44 balance experiments, each including a 24-h measurement of heat production by indirect calorimetry, carried out from mating until close to parturition. For observations with a nonprotein respiratory quotient between 0.7 and 1.0 (n = 42), quantitative oxidation of nutrients was calculated. The weight gain of the uterus during pregnancy was studied in 41 females killed either before mating, before implantation, after implantation or in mid or late true gestation, and energy retention was calculated. Heat production did not increase with advancing stage of gestation. Mean energy retention was low and in some individuals with repeated measurements even negative, indicating that part of the energy requirement for pregnancy may be supplied by mobilization of body reserves. This was reflected by a high level (42%) of fat oxidation in relation to total heat production. Protein oxidation accounted for 38% of heat production. The weight gain of the uterus during pregnancy could be described by logarithmic functions. Energy deposition in fetal tissue was low and only averaged approximately 350 kJ 47 d after mating.

Abstract
The energy and nitrogen metabolism of pregnant sows was measured with the method of indirect calorimetry in dependence on the number of gestation (1,2 and 4), on the energy supply (120, 100 and 80% of the requirement recommendation) and on the gestation stage. Values of maintenance requirement and of energy and nitrogen utilization for body deposition were calculated on the basis of results of energy and nitrogen metabolism. The energy maintenance requirement increased from 389 to 435 and 473 kJ metabolizable energy per kg LW0.75.d with rising number of gestation. The heat production increased from 85th to 115th day of gestation by 6%. The efficiency of the partial energy utilization for the energy deposition amounted to 66% on the average. The efficiency of the partial utilization of digestible nitrogen for the nitrogen deposition was calculated to 75%. The nitrogen maintenance requirement values amounted to 0.5 and 0.4 g digestible nitrogen per kg LW0.75.d in the 1st and 2nd half of gestation.

Abstract
A study of 23, 6-d-old Holstein-Friesian male calves was conducted to evaluate the thermal requirements of young calves in relation to their posture (standing or lying). Calves were housed individually and were assigned to one of four ambient temperatures: 5, 9, 13, or 18 degrees C. Heat production of each calf was measured continuously every 9 min by indirect calorimetry for 5 d. The posture during these 9-min periods was derived from the continuous measurement of physical activity. For both standing and lying, heat production was increased at 5 and 9 degrees C compared with 13 and 18 degrees C. This increase in heat production was larger during standing than during lying. Consequently, the energy cost of standing was affected by ambient temperature (173, 189, 144, and 114 kJ.kg-.75 x d-1 at 5, 9, 13, and 18 degrees C, respectively). The time spent standing was not affected by ambient temperature. The thermal requirements of the calves were dependent on the posture. Lower critical temperature was 13.5 degrees C during lying and 17.0 degrees C during standing. The rate of increase in heat production below the lower critical temperature was 7.47 kJ.kg-.75 x d-1 x Co-1 during lying and 11.24 kJ.kg-.75 x d-1 x Co-1 during standing. These results indicate that the increase in heat loss upon standing in the cold is greater than the increase in heat production upon standing at thermoneutrality. Consequently, young calves require increased cold-induced thermogenesis when they are standing.
