Analysis and mitigation of PQ disturbances in grid connected system using fuzzy logic based IUPQC

Renewable energy integration introduces grid instability due to variable and intermittent sources like solar and wind, impacting reliability. This paper provides a thorough discussion of recent advancements and emerging trends in grid-integrated wind energy systems (GIWES) and grid-integrated solar energy systems (GISES). More than 70 research articles have been rigorously assessed and listed the technological and economic challenges. The increase in installations of grid-Integrating systems gives rise to challenges like as grid strain, peak shaving impacts, unpredictability of renewable energy sources (RES), and power quality disturbances. A variety of custom power devices, such as dynamic voltage restorers (DVR), static synchronous compensators (STATCOM), active power filters (APF), and unified power quality conditioners (UPQC), have gained popularity in response to these challenges. Among the various challenges, power quality disturbances, including voltage sag, swell, current and harmonics pose significant issues. To address these disturbances this work present a novel approach utilizing fuzzy logic (FL) to develop multi-feeder interline unified power-quality conditioners (MF-IUPQCs). The MF-IUPQC has three legs and three levels, each of which has four diode-clamped inverters. Switching is carried out through the use of space vector pulse width/duration modulation (SVPWM). Total harmonic distortion (THD) induced by nonlinear loads is reduced by the FLC-based MF-IUPQC, which also improves dynamic performance and offers a smooth DC-link voltage. The proposed control mechanism is implemented using MATLAB/Simulink. The fuzzy-based controller is compared to the industry-standard proportional-integral (PI) controller to determine its efficacy. Among them, the MF-IUPQC based on FLC delivers the smoothest voltage profile and the lowest THD.

Respectful Maternity Care Practices During Normal Delivery at the Public Health Facilities in Tamil Nadu, Southern India: A Descriptive Study

INTRODUCTION

The quality of maternity care in Tamil Nadu has significantly improved in the past few years and various public health initiatives have helped to reduce crucial indicators like Maternal Mortality Ratio and Infant Mortality Rate. The improvement in quality of interface between the mothers and service providers in term of language, behaviour and attitude for ensuring 'Respectful Maternity Care' would support further enhancement of maternal and new born outcomes. Delivery of appropriate and respectful care to each pregnant woman would not only go a long way in reducing mortality and morbidity for the woman and new-born but also help in improved cognitive development of the baby.

OBJECTIVE

To assess the quality of delivery care practices provided during normal delivery among women accessing public health facilities in Tamil Nadu.

METHODS

A descriptive evaluation study was conducted from May to December 2018 in 16 facilities across 14 districts in Tamil Nadu. The health facilities were stratified according to the level of services, Government Medical College hospitals (MC), District headquarter hospitals (DHQ), Sub-district hospitals (SDH), and PHCs, 4 facilities in each category were selected. Data was collected by direct observation using a facility observation check list in an Android-based tablet application. Informed consent was obtained from all participants.

RESULTS

A total of 1006 pregnant women out of 2242 women who had normal delivery were assessed and included in the study. More than 50% of deliveries were conducted by nurses and midwives and the perinatal and maternal outcomes were found to be good. The parameters for the respectful maternity care were recorded. Routine care monitoring parameters helped to reduce mortality rate and improved delivery care.

CONCLUSION

The state though has achieved substantial success in promoting institutional delivery practices, still needs certain crucial improvements in the quality of respectful maternal care during the delivery.

A Mixture Model for Estimating SARS-CoV-2 Seroprevalence in Chennai, India

Serological assays used to estimate the prevalence of severe acute respiratory syndrome coronavirus 2 (SARS-CoV-2) often rely on manufacturers' cutoffs established on the basis of severe cases. We conducted a household-based serosurvey of 4,677 individuals in Chennai, India, from January to May 2021. Samples were tested for SARS-CoV-2 immunoglobulin G (IgG) antibodies to the spike (S) and nucleocapsid (N) proteins. We calculated seroprevalence, defining seropositivity using manufacturer cutoffs and using a mixture model based on measured IgG level. Using manufacturer cutoffs, there was a 5-fold difference in seroprevalence estimated by each assay. This difference was largely reconciled using the mixture model, with estimated anti-S and anti-N IgG seroprevalence of 64.9% (95% credible interval (CrI): 63.8, 66.0) and 51.5% (95% CrI: 50.2, 52.9), respectively. Age and socioeconomic factors showed inconsistent relationships with anti-S and anti-N IgG seropositivity using manufacturer cutoffs. In the mixture model, age was not associated with seropositivity, and improved household ventilation was associated with lower seropositivity odds. With global vaccine scale-up, the utility of the more stable anti-S IgG assay may be limited due to the inclusion of the S protein in several vaccines. Estimates of SARS-CoV-2 seroprevalence using alternative targets must consider heterogeneity in seroresponse to ensure that seroprevalence is not underestimated and correlates are not misinterpreted.

Precision Determination of the Neutral Weak Form Factor of ^{48}Ca

We report a precise measurement of the parity-violating (PV) asymmetry A_{PV} in the elastic scattering of longitudinally polarized electrons from ^{48}Ca. We measure A_{PV}=2668±106(stat)±40(syst) parts per billion, leading to an extraction of the neutral weak form factor F_{W}(q=0.8733  fm^{-1})=0.1304±0.0052(stat)±0.0020(syst) and the charge minus the weak form factor F_{ch}-F_{W}=0.0277±0.0055. The resulting neutron skin thickness R_{n}-R_{p}=0.121±0.026(exp)±0.024(model)  fm is relatively thin yet consistent with many model calculations. The combined CREX and PREX results will have implications for future energy density functional calculations and on the density dependence of the symmetry energy of nuclear matter.

New Measurements of the Beam-Normal Single Spin Asymmetry in Elastic Electron Scattering over a Range of Spin-0 Nuclei

We report precision determinations of the beam-normal single spin asymmetries (A_{n}) in the elastic scattering of 0.95 and 2.18 GeV electrons off ^{12}C, ^{40}Ca, ^{48}Ca, and ^{208}Pb at very forward angles where the most detailed theoretical calculations have been performed. The first measurements of A_{n} for ^{40}Ca and ^{48}Ca are found to be similar to that of ^{12}C, consistent with expectations and thus demonstrating the validity of theoretical calculations for nuclei with Z≤20. We also report A_{n} for ^{208}Pb at two new momentum transfers (Q^{2}) extending the previous measurement. Our new data confirm the surprising result previously reported, with all three data points showing significant disagreement with the results from the Z≤20 nuclei. These data confirm our basic understanding of the underlying dynamics that govern A_{n} for nuclei containing ≲50 nucleons, but point to the need for further investigation to understand the unusual A_{n} behavior discovered for scattering off ^{208}Pb.

Measurement of the Nucleon F_{2}^{n}/F_{2}^{p} Structure Function Ratio by the Jefferson Lab MARATHON Tritium/Helium-3 Deep Inelastic Scattering Experiment

The ratio of the nucleon F_{2} structure functions, F_{2}^{n}/F_{2}^{p}, is determined by the MARATHON experiment from measurements of deep inelastic scattering of electrons from ^{3}H and ^{3}He nuclei. The experiment was performed in the Hall A Facility of Jefferson Lab using two high-resolution spectrometers for electron detection, and a cryogenic target system which included a low-activity tritium cell. The data analysis used a novel technique exploiting the mirror symmetry of the two nuclei, which essentially eliminates many theoretical uncertainties in the extraction of the ratio. The results, which cover the Bjorken scaling variable range 0.19<x<0.83, represent a significant improvement compared to previous SLAC and Jefferson Lab measurements for the ratio. They are compared to recent theoretical calculations and empirical determinations of the F_{2}^{n}/F_{2}^{p} ratio.

Accurate Determination of the Neutron Skin Thickness of ^{208}Pb through Parity-Violation in Electron Scattering

We report a precision measurement of the parity-violating asymmetry A_{PV} in the elastic scattering of longitudinally polarized electrons from ^{208}Pb. We measure A_{PV}=550±16(stat)±8(syst) parts per billion, leading to an extraction of the neutral weak form factor F_{W}(Q^{2}=0.00616  GeV^{2})=0.368±0.013. Combined with our previous measurement, the extracted neutron skin thickness is R_{n}-R_{p}=0.283±0.071  fm. The result also yields the first significant direct measurement of the interior weak density of ^{208}Pb: ρ_{W}^{0}=-0.0796±0.0036(exp)±0.0013(theo)  fm^{-3} leading to the interior baryon density ρ_{b}^{0}=0.1480±0.0036(exp)±0.0013(theo)  fm^{-3}. The measurement accurately constrains the density dependence of the symmetry energy of nuclear matter near saturation density, with implications for the size and composition of neutron stars.

Jejunojejunal Intussusception at Birth: A Rare Clinical Scenario

We report a case of intussusception presenting as bilious vomiting in a term neonate. Intussusception should be considered as a differential diagnosis even in the neonatal period. Ultrasound scan may help in early diagnosis. This condition needs to be operated early as delayed treatment may lead to bowel necrosis.

Measurement of the Spectral Shape of the β-Decay of ^{137}Xe to the Ground State of ^{137}Cs in EXO-200 and Comparison with Theory

We report on a comparison between the theoretically predicted and experimentally measured spectra of the first-forbidden nonunique β-decay transition ^{137}Xe(7/2^{-})→^{137}Cs(7/2^{+}). The experimental data were acquired by the EXO-200 experiment during a deployment of an AmBe neutron source. The ultralow background environment of EXO-200, together with dedicated source deployment and analysis procedures, allowed for collection of a pure sample of the decays, with an estimated signal to background ratio of more than 99 to 1 in the energy range from 1075 to 4175 keV. In addition to providing a rare and accurate measurement of the first-forbidden nonunique β-decay shape, this work constitutes a novel test of the calculated electron spectral shapes in the context of the reactor antineutrino anomaly and spectral bump.

Search for Neutrinoless Double-β Decay with the Complete EXO-200 Dataset

A search for neutrinoless double-β decay (0νββ) in ^{136}Xe is performed with the full EXO-200 dataset using a deep neural network to discriminate between 0νββ and background events. Relative to previous analyses, the signal detection efficiency has been raised from 80.8% to 96.4±3.0%, and the energy resolution of the detector at the Q value of ^{136}Xe 0νββ has been improved from σ/E=1.23% to 1.15±0.02% with the upgraded detector. Accounting for the new data, the median 90% confidence level 0νββ half-life sensitivity for this analysis is 5.0×10^{25}  yr with a total ^{136}Xe exposure of 234.1 kg yr. No statistically significant evidence for 0νββ is observed, leading to a lower limit on the 0νββ half-life of 3.5×10^{25}  yr at the 90% confidence level.

The essential oils (EOs) extracted from plants hold many medicinal properties. But the delivery of the EOs and maintenance of its stability is a challenge. In this study, a linalool associated compound isolated from Coriander sativum was conjugated with carbon nanoparticle (CNP). The conjugate was characterized by Fourier transform Infrared spectroscopy (FTIR), transmission electron microscope (TEM), and particle size (PS) analysis. The nano-sized conjugate showed similar antioxidant and anti-proliferative activity when compared to the pure extract. In the case of antibacterial property, conjugate showed good inhibition against both gram-positive and gram-negative bacteria whereas the extract showed inhibition only against gram-negative bacteria. In short, the activity of the compound was not altered by its conjugation with CNP. This conjugated compound was completely water soluble which shall make it a likely formulation for hydrophilic based drug delivery applications.

Synthesis of MgO/TiO2 Nanocomposite and Its Application in Photocatalytic Dye Degradation

The application of nanoparticles in dye degradation is one of the trending arenas of research in the present day world. In this work, we report a novel route to synthesise MgO/TiO2 metal oxide nanocomposite by microemulsion technique and its application in photocatalytic dye degradation. Oil in water microemulsion was prepared using Span 80 and Tween 80 as surfactants whose proportion was regulated using hydrophilic and lipophilic Balance (HLB). The obtained microemulsion was then mechanically stirred and calcined to obtain the nanocomposite. The as-prepared nanocomposites were characterized using X Ray Diffraction (XRD), Fourier transform infrared spectroscopy (FTIR) and scanning electron microscopy (SEM). The prepared nanoparticles exhibited remarkable potential to degrade azo dye (Methyl red) under UV-Visible light irradiation. The effect of catalyst in the degradation was studied for different concentrations of dye (20, 40, 60, 80, 100 mg/L) and different loadings of the catalyst (0.4, 0.6, 0.8, 1.0, 1.2 g/L) so as to determine the optimum catalyst load. The consistency of the obtained data was compared with the first order reaction rate expression. Quasi steady state model was used in fitting the data and the kinetic constants were evaluated. Also, the degradation efficiency of MgO/TiO2 nanocomposite was compared with the degradation efficiency of TiO2 nanoparticles synthesized by microemulsion method.

Trends in incidence of Ewing sarcoma of bone in India - Evidence from the National Cancer Registry Programme (1982-2011)

Background

Ewing sarcoma is a malignant tumour found mainly in childhood and adolescence. The present study aims at analyzing the data on Ewing sarcoma cases of bone from the National Cancer Registry Programme, India to provide incidence, patterns, and trends in the Indian population.

Materials and Methods

The data of five Population Based Cancer Registries (PBCR) of Bangalore, Mumbai, Chennai, Bhopal and Delhi over 30 years period (1982- 2011) were used to calculate the Age Specific and Age Standardized Incidence Rates (ASpR and ASIR), and trends in incidence was analyzed by linear and Joinpoint Regression.

Results

Ewing sarcoma comprised around 15 % of all bone malignancies. Sixty-eight percent were 0-19 years, with 1.6 times risk of tumour in bones of limbs as compared to other bones. The highest incidence rate (per million) was in the 10-14 years age group (male -4.4, female -2.9) with significantly increasing trend in ASpR observed in both sexes. Pooled ASIR per million for all ages was higher in male (1.6) than female (1.0) with an increasing rate ratio of ASIR with increase in age. Trend of pooled ASIR for all ages was significantly increased in both sexes. Twelve percent cases were reported in ≥30 years of age.

Conclusion

This paper has described population based measurements on burden and trends in incidence of skeletal Ewing in India. These may steer further research questions on the clinical and molecular epidemiology to explain factors associated with the increasing incidence of Ewing sarcoma bone observed in India.

Isolation, identification and characterization of apigenin from Justicia gendarussa and its anti-inflammatory activity

Inflammatory responses during chronic diseases such as atherosclerosis, cancer etc., are harmful to host organisms. Generally NSAIDs are used to treat against these severe conditions but due to its adverse effects studies are going on with medicinal plants, since they are rich in bioactive compounds. Justicia gendarussa is one such plant which has been used as a remedial measure for treating inflammatory diseases since ancient time. Thus the present study involved in the isolation, characterization and identification of apigenin (flavonoid) from this plant and to elucidate its molecular mechanism against inflammation via TLR-NF-κB signaling pathway using ox-LDL induced hPBMCs in in vitro model. Methanolic extract was used for the isolation process and results showed that the F6 fraction collected from ethyl acetate through column chromatography showed 89% paw edema inhibition at a dose of 10 mg/kg in carrageenan induced rats. Purification of F6 by TLC with toluene: chloroform: acetone (8:5:7) and further characterization by ¹HNMR indicated the presence of bioactive compound, apigenin. In vitro studies revealed that pretreatment of ox-LDL induced hPBMCs with apigenin (25 μM) significantly (P < 0.05) reduced the levels of TLR4, MyD88, TRIF, TRAF6, NF-κB, COX-2, PGE2, IL-1β and TNF-α responsible for generating inflammation and elevated the level of anti-inflammatory cytokine, IL-10. These results indicate the therapeutic efficacy of bioflavonoid apigenin which was isolated from Justicia gendarussa against ox-LDL induced inflammation. Therefore apigenin can be treated as a suitable therapeutic agent against inflammatory diseases.

Depression, Anxiety and Stress Among Higher Secondary School Students of Imphal, Manipur

Introduction:

Adolescence is a stressful period due to physical, psychological, sexual changes, and the presence of psychiatric disorders such as depression, anxiety, and stress at this stage of life is a matter of concern.

Objectives:

The objectives of the study were to determine the prevalences of depression, anxiety, and stress among higher secondary school students of Imphal and to determine the association between depression, anxiety, and stress and selected variables such as gender, standard, and religion.

Materials and methods:

From September 2014 to October 2014, a cross-sectional study was conducted among higher secondary school students of Imphal. The sample size was calculated to be 750. Seven schools were randomly selected, and all the students in that school were enrolled in the study. The study tool used was a questionnaire containing DASS (Depression Anxiety Stress Scale) and sociodemographic characteristics.

Results:

The prevalences of depression, anxiety, and stress among 830 valid respondents were 19.5%, 24.4%, and 21.1%, respectively. In total, 81.6% of the respondents had at least one of the studied disorders and 34.7% of the respondents had all the three negative states. The prevalences of depression, anxiety, and stress were high among females and were significant for anxiety (P = 0.00) and stress (P = 0.04). The prevalences of depression and stress were significantly higher among 12th standard students with P-values of 0.00 and 0.02.

Conclusion:

The prevalences of depression, anxiety, and stress were high with anxiety and stress significantly higher among females, whereas prevalences of depression and stress were significantly higher among 12th standard students. More studies are recommended to determine the factors leading to these mental disorders.

Stimulated Raman adiabatic passage in a three-level superconducting circuit

The adiabatic manipulation of quantum states is a powerful technique that opened up new directions in quantum engineering—enabling tests of fundamental concepts such as geometrical phases and topological transitions, and holding the promise of alternative models of quantum computation. Here we benchmark the stimulated Raman adiabatic passage for circuit quantum electrodynamics by employing the first three levels of a transmon qubit. In this ladder configuration, we demonstrate a population transfer efficiency >80% between the ground state and the second excited state using two adiabatic Gaussian-shaped control microwave pulses. By doing quantum tomography at successive moments during the Raman pulses, we investigate the transfer of the population in time domain. Furthermore, we show that this protocol can be reversed by applying a third adiabatic pulse, we study a hybrid nondiabatic–adiabatic sequence, and we present experimental results for a quasi-degenerate intermediate level.

The precise control and manipulation of the states of a multi-level quantum system are fundamental for quantum information processing. Here, the authors demonstrate the robust adiabatic manipulation of the quantum states of a superconducting circuit via stimulated Raman adiabatic passage.

An apparatus to manipulate and identify individual Ba ions from bulk liquid Xe

We describe a system to transport and identify barium ions produced in liquid xenon, as part of R&D towards the second phase of a double beta decay experiment, nEXO. The goal is to identify the Ba ion resulting from an extremely rare nuclear decay of the isotope (136)Xe, hence providing a confirmation of the occurrence of the decay. This is achieved through Resonance Ionization Spectroscopy (RIS). In the test setup described here, Ba ions can be produced in liquid xenon or vacuum and collected on a clean substrate. This substrate is then removed to an analysis chamber under vacuum, where laser-induced thermal desorption and RIS are used with time-of-flight mass spectroscopy for positive identification of the barium decay product.

Measurements of parity-violating asymmetries in electron-deuteron scattering in the nucleon resonance region

We report on parity-violating asymmetries in the nucleon resonance region measured using inclusive inelastic scattering of 5-6 GeV longitudinally polarized electrons off an unpolarized deuterium target. These results are the first parity-violating asymmetry data in the resonance region beyond the Δ(1232). They provide a verification of quark-hadron duality-the equivalence of the quark- and hadron-based pictures of the nucleon-at the (10-15)% level in this electroweak observable, which is dominated by contributions from the nucleon electroweak γZ interference structure functions. In addition, the results provide constraints on nucleon resonance models relevant for calculating background corrections to elastic parity-violating electron scattering measurements.

Artificial groundwater recharge zones mapping using remote sensing and GIS: a case study in Indian Punjab

Artificial groundwater recharge plays a vital role in sustainable management of groundwater resources. The present study was carried out to identify the artificial groundwater recharge zones in Bist Doab basin of Indian Punjab using remote sensing and geographical information system (GIS) for augmenting groundwater resources. The study area has been facing severe water scarcity due to intensive agriculture for the past few years. The thematic layers considered in the present study are: geomorphology (2004), geology (2004), land use/land cover (2008), drainage density, slope, soil texture (2000), aquifer transmissivity, and specific yield. Different themes and related features were assigned proper weights based on their relative contribution to groundwater recharge. Normalized weights were computed using the Saaty's analytic hierarchy process. Thematic layers were integrated in ArcGIS for delineation of artificial groundwater recharge zones. The recharge map thus obtained was divided into four zones (poor, moderate, good, and very good) based on their influence to groundwater recharge. Results indicate that 15, 18, 37, and 30 % of the study area falls under "poor," "moderate," "good," and "very good" groundwater recharge zones, respectively. The highest recharge potential area is located towards western and parts of middle region because of high infiltration rates caused due to the distribution of flood plains, alluvial plain, and agricultural land. The least effective recharge potential is in the eastern and middle parts of the study area due to low infiltration rate. The results of the study can be used to formulate an efficient groundwater management plan for sustainable utilization of limited groundwater resources.

Search for neutrinoless double-beta decay in 136Xe with EXO-200

We report on a search for neutrinoless double-beta decay of 136Xe with EXO-200. No signal is observed for an exposure of 32.5 kg yr, with a background of ∼1.5×10(-3)  kg(-1) yr(-1)  keV(-1) in the ±1σ region of interest. This sets a lower limit on the half-life of the neutrinoless double-beta decay T(1/2)(0νββ)(136Xe)>1.6×10(25)  yr (90% C.L.), corresponding to effective Majorana masses of less than 140-380 meV, depending on the matrix element calculation.

Measurement of the neutron radius of 208Pb through parity violation in electron scattering

We report the first measurement of the parity-violating asymmetry A(PV) in the elastic scattering of polarized electrons from 208Pb. A(PV) is sensitive to the radius of the neutron distribution (R(n)). The result A(PV)=0.656±0.060(stat)±0.014(syst) ppm corresponds to a difference between the radii of the neutron and proton distributions R(n)-R(p)=0.33(-0.18)(+0.16) fm and provides the first electroweak observation of the neutron skin which is expected in a heavy, neutron-rich nucleus.

New precision limit on the strange vector form factors of the proton

The parity-violating cross-section asymmetry in the elastic scattering of polarized electrons from unpolarized protons has been measured at a four-momentum transfer squared Q2 = 0.624  GeV2 and beam energy E(b) = 3.48  GeV to be A(PV) = -23.80 ± 0.78(stat) ± 0.36(syst) parts per million. This result is consistent with zero contribution of strange quarks to the combination of electric and magnetic form factors G(E)(s) + 0.517G(M)(s) = 0.003 ± 0.010(stat) ± 0.004(syst) ± 0.009(ff), where the third error is due to the limits of precision on the electromagnetic form factors and radiative corrections. With this measurement, the world data on strange contributions to nucleon form factors are seen to be consistent with zero and not more than a few percent of the proton form factors.

Observation of two-neutrino double-beta decay in 136Xe with the EXO-200 detector

We report the observation of two-neutrino double-beta decay in (136)Xe with T(1/2) = 2.11 ± 0.04(stat) ± 0.21(syst) × 10(21) yr. This second-order process, predicted by the standard model, has been observed for several nuclei but not for (136)Xe. The observed decay rate provides new input to matrix element calculations and to the search for the more interesting neutrinoless double-beta decay, the most sensitive probe for the existence of Majorana particles and the measurement of the neutrino mass scale.

Anticancer studies of drug encapsulated polyethylene terephthalate-Co-polylactic acid nanocapsules

OBJECTIVES

The purpose of this study was to investigate the anticancer activity of anticancer drugs (5-fluorouracil and 6-thioguanine) in polymeric nanocapsules in the presence and in the absence of gold and iron oxide nanoparticles toward Hep2 cancer cells.

MATERIALS AND METHODS

MTT (3-[4,5-dimethylthiazol-2-yl]-2,5-diphenyltetrazolium bromide) assay was used for quantitative measurements for the anticancer cell activity. Encapsulated drug in polyethylene terephthalate-polylactic acid copolymer (PET-co-PLA) nanocapsules in the presence and absence of gold and iron oxide nanoparticles were prepared via the W/O/W emulsification solvent-evaporation method. Morphology of the nanoparticles was characterized by transmission electron microscopy and scanning electron microscopy.

CONCLUSION

The average size of the polymeric nanocapsules, gold nanoparticles, and iron oxide nanoparticles were found to be in range of 230-260, 18 -20 nm, 5-10 nm, respectively. The findings in this study inferred that incorporated drug in polymeric nanocapsules with gold nanoparticles and iron oxide nanoparticles show better anticancer activity when compared with encapsulated drug in polymeric nanocapsules.

Bioelectrocatalysis of Acetobacter aceti and Gluconobacter roseus for current generation

Acetobacter aceti and Gluconobacter roseus, which are known to be responsible for the spoilage of wine, are used for current generation in batch-type microbial biofuel cells and it has been shown for the first time that these two microorganisms do not require mediators for the transfer of electrons to the anode. Three biofuel cells were constructed with two cells containing the pure cultures of each of the microorganisms as the biocatalyst (A-MFC, G-MFC) and the third cell was constructed with the mixed culture of these two microorganisms as the biocatalyst (AG-MFC). The performance of the biofuel cells was evaluated in terms of open circuit voltage (OCV), fuel consumption rate, internal resistance, power output, and coulombic efficiency. The mixed culture cell (AG-MFC) exhibits a better overall performance compared to the other cells.

Removal of Hexavalent Chromium Ions from Aqueous Solutions by an Anion-Exchange Resin

The removal of hexavalent chromium, Cr(VI), from aqueous solutions under different conditions using an anion-exchange resin (AXR) as an adsorbent was investigated under batch conditions. Such studies indicated that the percentage adsorption decreased with increasing initial Cr(VI) concentration, with the maximum removal of such ions occurred at a pH value of ca. 2.0. Both the Langmuir and Freundlich isotherm models were capable of reproducing the isotherms obtained experimentally. The sorption process was rapid during the first 20 min with equilibrium being attained within 30 min. The process followed first-order kinetics. The results demonstrate that such anion-exchange resins can be used for the efficient removal of Cr(VI) ions from water and wastewater.

Clinical validation of a low-cost telemedicine equipment remote medical diagnostics kit at a tertiary care hospital

BACKGROUND

The Remote Medical Diagnostics kit is an indigenous and low-cost technology that can measure and transmit via the internet 6 clinical parameters viz. Blood pressure (BP), pulse, temperature, oxygen saturation, 12-lead Electrocardiogram (ECG) and heart/breath sounds. Prior to commercial use, it needs clinical validation.

METHODS

Fifty three patients (including 1 acute myocardial infarction) were evaluated for the above parameters using accepted standard methods and the Remote Medical Diagnostics kit.

RESULTS

The intraclass correlation coefficient (ICC) for systolic BP (SBP), diastolic BP (DBP), saturation pulse, manual pulse and temperature was 0.927, 0.904, 0.989, 0.99 and 0.912 indicating a high degree of agreement between the two methods. For oxygen saturation, the ICC was 0.763 indicating a moderately high agreement. For heart sounds, the kappa coefficient (kappa) for inter-rater reliability was 0.48 (observed agreement of 96.1%). For breath sounds, the 'kappa' value was 0.48 indicating moderate agreement. For the breath sounds, the 'kappa' value was 0.38, indicating fair agreement (the observed agreement of 94.2%). For the ECG, the observed agreement was 94.4% by visual assessment.

CONCLUSION

At the bedside, the Remote Medical Diagnostics kit was clinically validated for the above 6 parameters.

Ultra-fast simultaneous detection of obesity-related coenzymes in mice using microchip electrophoresis with a LIF detector

Hepatic acyl-coenzyme A synthetase (ACS), carnitine palmitoyltransferase-I (CPT-I) and acetyl coenzyme A carboxylase (ACC) are coenzymes associated with the genetic type of obesity in animal models. This paper reports the use of microchip electrophoresis (ME) with a laser-induced fluorescence (LIF) detector based on a reverse transcriptase-polymerase chain reaction (RT-PCR) to detect the amplified DNA fragments of these coenzymes (ACS, CPT-I and ACC) in the mRNA extracted from mice. DNA fragments ranging from 50 to 2652 bp were well resolved using this procedure with a running buffer (1x TBE), 0.5% polyvinylpyrrolidone (M(r) 1,000,000) as the coating gel and 0.7% polyethyleneoxide (M(r) 8,000,000) as the sieving gel at pH 8.30. The separation of the three RT-PCR products was achieved by ME in a single-run within 17 s using programmed field strength gradients (PFSG) (470 V cm(-1) for 9 s, 205.8 V cm(-1) for 2 s, 411.6 V cm(-1) for 4 s, 117.6 V cm(-1) for 2 s and 470.4V cm(-1) for 8 s). The ME-PFSG method was found to be 4 times faster than the method using a constant field and 138 times faster than slab gel electrophoresis. Moreover, the amplified RT-PCR products of the obesity-related coenzymes in C57BL/6J mice were analyzed using only sub-micro liter samples.

Precision measurements of the nucleon strange form factors at Q2 approximately 0.1 GeV2

We report new measurements of the parity-violating asymmetry A(PV) in elastic scattering of 3 GeV electrons off hydrogen and 4He targets with <theta(lab)> approximately 6.0 degrees . The 4He result is A(PV)=(+6.40+/-0.23(stat)+/-0.12(syst))x10(-6). The hydrogen result is A(PV)=(-1.58+/-0.12(stat)+/-0.04(syst))x10(-6). These results significantly improve constraints on the electric and magnetic strange form factors G(E)(s) and G(M)(s). We extract G(E)(s)=0.002+/-0.014+/-0.007 at <Q(2)>=0.077 GeV2, and G(E)(s)+0.09G(M)(s)=0.007+/-0.011+/-0.006 at <Q(2)>=0.109 GeV2, providing new limits on the role of strange quarks in the nucleon charge and magnetization distributions.

Parity-violating electron scattering from 4He and the strange electric form factor of the nucleon

We have measured the parity-violating electroweak asymmetry in the elastic scattering of polarized electrons from 4He at an average scattering angle <theta(lab)> = 5.7 degrees and a four-momentum transfer Q2 = 0.091 GeV2 . From these data, for the first time, the strange electric form factor of the nucleon G(E)s can be isolated. The measured asymmetry of A(PV) = (6.72 +/- 0.84(stat) +/- 0.21(syst) x 10(-6) yields a value of G(E)s = -0.038 +/- 0.042(stat) +/- 0.010(syst), consistent with zero.

Precision measurement of the weak mixing angle in Møller scattering

We report on a precision measurement of the parity-violating asymmetry in fixed target electron-electron (Møller) scattering: A(PV) = [-131 +/- 14(stat) +/- 10(syst)] x 10(-9), leading to the determination of the weak mixing angle sin2(thetaW(eff) = 0.2397 +/- 0.0010(stat) +/- 0.0008(syst), evaluated at Q2 = 0.026 GeV2. Combining this result with the measurements of sin2(thetaW(eff) at the Z0 pole, the running of the weak mixing angle is observed with over 6sigma significance. The measurement sets constraints on new physics effects at the TeV scale.

Aspiration of a tracheostomy tube flange

Foreign body aspiration is a common pediatric emergency. Aspiration of a metallic tracheostomy tube flange into the left main bronchus and the resultant subacute respiratory distress is presented. Being the only case of its kind in reported pediatric literature, a review of the etiology, clinical presentation and prevention of this accident is appended.

N‐Palmitoylation of the Radioprotective Domain of Interleukin‐1 Affords Inhibition of LPS‐Induced Nitric Oxide Generation

Interleukin-1beta (IL-1beta), a cytokine involved in homeostatic processes such as the immune system and inflammatory reactions, is a potent inducer of nitric oxide. The nonapeptide of human IL-1beta (VQGEESNDK, position 163-171, specific radioprotective domain--SRD) has been shown to retain radioprotective, immunostimulatory, and adjuvant activities of the native molecule without any inflammatory and pyrogenic properties. Unlike the parent IL-1, SRD did not induce nitric oxide (NO) in control or irradiated RAW 264.7 cells nor did it affect inducible nitric oxide synthase (iNOS) as shown by ELISA based mRNA assay (Quantikine). A lipophillic derivative of the SRD (a palmitoyl residue at the amino terminus of the SRD) was synthesized (palmitoyl specific radioprotective domain, P-SRD) to find out if this structural derivatization would restore the NO-inducing ability of IL-1. Surprisingly, P-SRD not only did not induce NO, but significantly inhibited lipopolysaccharide (LPS) stimulated nitric oxide (NO) production. Quantikine studies indicated that P-SRD also inhibited iNOS in LPS stimulated macrophage cells, suggesting that decrease in NO production in the presence of P-SRD was the result of iNOS mRNA inhibition. These results indicate that N-palmitoylation of SRD may effectively ameliorate potentially fatal symptoms of LPS-induced endotoxemic hypotensive shock associated with IL-1 without inflammatory and pyrogenic toxic side effects.

Measurement of the generalized polarizabilities of the proton in virtual Compton scattering at Q2=0.92 and 1.76 GeV2

We report a virtual Compton scattering study of the proton at low c.m. energies. We have determined the structure functions P(LL)-P(TT)/epsilon and P(LT), and the electric and magnetic generalized polarizabilities (GPs) alpha(E)(Q2) and beta(M)(Q2) at momentum transfer Q(2)=0.92 and 1.76 GeV2. The electric GP shows a strong falloff with Q2, and its global behavior does not follow a simple dipole form. The magnetic GP shows a rise and then a falloff; this can be interpreted as the dominance of a long-distance diamagnetic pion cloud at low Q2, compensated at higher Q2 by a paramagnetic contribution from piN intermediate states.
