Abstract
This work presents the peculiarities of cone ion beam formation with a focused thruster with anode layer (TAL) and its application to silicon carbide (SiC) ion beam figuring. Modeling results of Lorentz E × B force distribution in the discharge gap are presented. 3D particle tracing for keV Ar ions is carried out for the first time in the beam drift region of TAL with magnetic lens. Extracted ion beam full width at half maxima is about 2 mm in the focal plane, where the SiC etching rate reaches 0.5 µm/min. The SiC sputter yields are measured as a function of the Ar ion impact energy and beam incidence angle. The maximum sputter yield of 2.8 atom/ion is observed at 45° of the beam-sample angle for the Si targets. Furthermore, the maximum sputter yield value of 1.7 atom/ion is measured at 30° of the beam-sample angle for the SiC targets. The novelty of present research is in the application of focused TAL keV Ar ion beam to the SiC ion beam figuring.

Abstract
Relationships of the backscatter coefficient (BC), the apparent integrated backscatter (AIB), and the integrated reflection coefficient (IRC) with the bone mineral density (BMD) and the microarchitectural parameters were investigated in 28 bovine femoral trabecular bone samples. The BC was highly correlated with the BMD and the microarchitectural parameters (R = -0.66 to 0.71). In contrast, the AIB and the IRC exhibited high correlations with the BMD and the bone volume fraction (R = -0.68 to 0.77) and relatively lower correlations with the remaining microarchitectural parameters (R = -0.62 to 0.60). The multiple regression models yielded the adjusted squared correlation coefficients of 0.54-0.76.

Abstract
The ultrasonic backscatter coefficient and the exponent n (frequency dependence of the backscatter coefficient) were measured in 24 bovine femoral trabecular bone samples. The binary mixture model for ultrasonic scattering from trabecular bone was applied to predict the variations of the ultrasound parameters with the bone volume fraction (BV/TV) and the trabecular thickness (Tb.Th) in trabecular bone. The backscatter coefficient exhibited significant, positive correlations with the BV/TV (R = 0.82) and the Tb.Th (R = 0.79). In contrast, the exponent n was found to be significantly, negatively correlated with the BV/TV (R = -0.77) and the Tb.Th, (R = -0.71).

Abstract
The thickness dependences of acoustic bandgaps were theoretically and experimentally investigated in two-dimensional phononic crystals (PCs) immersed in water. The acoustic pressure transmission coefficients were measured as a function of the PC thickness in order to understand the characteristics of the transmission loss through the PCs. The acoustic bandgaps can be classified into two types of generation mechanisms from the perspective of acoustic diffraction modes: Bragg bandgap and non-zeroth order diffraction (NZOD) bandgap. The NZOD bandgaps show larger transmission losses and shorter decay lengths with increasing PC thickness than the Bragg bandgaps.

Abstract
The phase velocity and the backscatter coefficient were measured in 28 bovine femoral trabecular bone samples filled with marrow and water in vitro from 0.2 to 0.6 MHz. The phase velocities decreased approximately linearly with increasing frequency and the average dispersion rate of -34 ms-1 MHz-1 in the marrow-filled samples was higher than that of -42 ms-1 MHz-1 in the water-filled samples. The backscatter coefficients exhibited nonlinear, monotonically increasing dependences on the frequency and the average value of the exponent n = 2.92 (frequency dependence) in the marrow-filled samples was higher than the value of n = 2.79 in the water-filled samples.

Abstract
The high resolution Thomson scattering system with 63 points along a 25 mm line measures the radial electron temperature (Te) and its density (ne) in an argon plasma. By using a DC arc source with lanthanum hexaboride (LaB6) electrode, plasmas with electron temperature of over 5 eV and densities of 1.5 × 1019 m-3 have been measured. The system uses a frequency doubled (532 nm) Nd:YAG laser with 0.25 J/pulse at 20 Hz. The scattered light is collected and sent to a triple-grating spectrometer via optical-fibers, where images are recorded by an intensified charge coupled device (ICCD) camera. Although excellent in stray-light reduction, a disadvantage comes with its relatively low optical transmission and in sampling a tiny scattering volume. Thus requires accumulating multitude of images. In order to improve photon statistics, pixel binning in the ICCD camera as well as enlarging the intermediate slit-width inside the triple-grating spectrometer has been exploited. In addition, the ICCD camera capture images at 40 Hz while the laser is at 20 Hz. This operation mode allows us to alternate between background and scattering shot images. By image subtraction, influences from the plasma background are effectively taken out. Maximum likelihood estimation that uses a parameter sweep finds best fitting parameters Te and ne with the incoherent scattering spectrum.

Abstract
This study proposes an acoustic theory that describes the resonance phenomena in a resonator made of acoustic composite right/left-handed (CRLH) metamaterials, and verifies it through numerical simulation. The established theory for a microwave CRLH metamaterial resonator is adapted to explain the resonance phenomena in an acoustic CRLH metamaterial resonator. In particular, attention is focused on the zeroth-order resonance phenomenon which has several interesting properties. When a resonator is composed of a CRLH metamaterial, a resonance with a flat acoustic field distribution may occur at one of the frequencies where the wavenumber becomes zero. This resonance is called zeroth-order resonance. Through numerical simulation, such unusual resonance phenomenon in acoustics is observed in more detail and the proposed theory is verified. The results of the theory and the numerical simulation clearly show that zeroth-order resonance can exist at those frequencies where the acoustic field distribution is flat due to infinite wavelength. It is also shown that the resonance frequency and the Q factor of this resonance depend on the boundary condition at both ends of the resonator, and they basically do not change even when the number of units is reduced or increased.

Abstract
OBJECTIVE This study aimed to investigate the differences in brain morphology according to handedness. MATERIALS AND METHODS Forty-two healthy subjects were enrolled (21 right-handers and 21 nonright-handers). The two groups were classified according to the Edinburgh Handedness Inventory. Measures of cortical morphology, such as thickness, surface area, volume, and curvature, and the volumes of subcortical structures, such as the amygdala, caudate, hippocampus, globus pallidus, putamen, and thalamus, were compared between the groups according to handedness using whole-brain 3D T1-weighted MRI. In addition, we investigated the white matter differences between the groups using diffusion tensor imaging. Moreover, we quantified correlations between the handedness scales of the Edinburgh Handedness Inventory and each measure of different brain morphologies. RESULTS The volumes of the right putamen and left globus pallidus in nonright-handed participants were significantly larger than those who were right-handed (0.3559 vs. 0.3155%, p = .0028; 0.1101 vs. 0.0975%, p = .0025; respectively). Moreover, the volumes of the right putamen and left globus pallidus were negatively correlated with the handedness scales of the Edinburgh Handedness Inventory (r = -.392, p = .0101; r = -.361, p = .0189; respectively). However, the cortex morphology and the other subcortical volumes were not significantly different between the two groups. In addition, we did not find any white matter differences between the groups. CONCLUSIONS We demonstrated that there were significant differences in brain morphology between right-handers and nonright-handers, especially in the basal ganglia, which could produce differences in motor control according to handedness.

Abstract
The speed of sound (SOS), the normalized broadband ultrasound attenuation (nBUA), and the nonlinear parameter (B/A) were measured in 18 trabecular-bone-mimicking phantoms consisting of water-saturated aluminum foams. The strong slow wave and the very weak fast wave were consistently observed in the signals transmitted through all of the phantoms. It was found that the SOS increased as the porosity and the trabecular spacing increased. In contrast, both the nBUA and the B/A showed opposite dependences on the porosity and the trabecular spacing. All three ultrasound parameters exhibited high correlation coefficients with the porosity and the trabecular spacing.

Abstract
Conessine, a steroidal alkaloid isolated from Holarrhena floribunda, has anti-malarial activity and interacts with the histamine H3 receptor. However, the cellular effects of conessine are poorly understood. Accordingly, we evaluated the involvement of conessine in the regulation of autophagy. We searched natural compounds that modulate autophagy, and conessine was identified as an inhibitor of autophagic flux. Conessine treatment induced the formation of autophagosomes, and p62, an autophagic adapter, accumulated in the autophagosomes. Reactive oxygen species such as hydrogen peroxide (H2O2) result in muscle cell death by inducing excessive autophagic flux. Treatment with conessine inhibited H2O2-induced autophagic flux in C2C12 myoblast cells and also interfered with cell death. Our results indicate that conessine has the potential effect to inhibit muscle cell death by interfering with autophagic flux.

Abstract
The PKA-CREB signaling pathway is involved in many cellular processes including autophagy. Recent studies demonstrated that PKA-CREB inhibits autophagy in yeast; however, the role of PKA-CREB signaling in mammalian cell autophagy has not been fully characterized. Here, we report that the integral membrane protein ITM2A expression is positively regulated by PKA-CREB signaling and ITM2A expression interferes with autophagic flux by interacting with vacuolar ATPase (v-ATPase). The ITM2A promoter contains a CRE element, and mutation at the CRE consensus site decreases the promoter activity. Forskolin treatment and PKA expression activate the ITM2A promoter confirming that ITM2A expression is dependent on the PKA-CREB pathway. ITM2A expression results in the accumulation of autophagosomes and interferes with autolysosome formation by blocking autophagic flux. We demonstrated that ITM2A physically interacts with v-ATPase and inhibits lysosomal function. These results support the notion that PKA-CREB signaling pathway regulates ITM2A expression, which negatively regulates autophagic flux by interfering with the function of v-ATPase.

Abstract
The fluorescent-antibody-to-membrane-antigen (FAMA) test is regarded as the "gold standard" to detect protective antibodies to varicella-zoster virus (VZV) because of its high sensitivity and specificity. Because the classic FAMA test uses an infectious virus for detection of antibodies to VZV, it is labor-intensive, and also requires special equipment for handling the virus. For this reason, we attempted to develop a simple and safe FAMA assay. Because VZV glycoprotein E (gE) is one of the major VZV glycoproteins, we used the gE protein for the FAMA test (gE FAMA). Here, we demonstrate that overexpression of gE in HEK293T cells can be used to measure antibodies in human serum, and that gE FAMA titers are closely correlated with gpEIA ELISA data. These results indicate that our gE FAMA test has the potential to measure antibodies to VZV.

The dependences of ultrasonic properties on the frequency and the trabecular spacing were investigated in 20 trabecular-bone-mimicking phantoms consisting of cellular copper foams. The strong slow waves were consistently observed in the signals transmitted through all of the phantoms. The frequency-dependent phase velocity and attenuation coefficient of the slow wave were measured at frequencies from 0.7 to 1.3 MHz. The phase velocity decreased approximately linearly with increasing frequency while the attenuation coefficients increased with increasing frequency. The phase velocity increased monotonically with increasing trabecular spacing from 1337 to 2931 μm while the attenuation coefficient decreased with increasing spacing.

Abstract
The present study aims to investigate the propagation of time-reversed Lamb waves in bovine cortical bone in vitro. The time-reversed Lamb waves were successfully launched at 200 kHz in 18 bovine tibiae through a time reversal process of Lamb waves. The group velocities of the time-reversed Lamb waves in the bovine tibiae were measured using the axial transmission technique. They showed a significant correlation with the cortical thickness and tended to follow the theoretical group velocity of the lowest order antisymmetrical Lamb wave fairly well, consistent with the behavior of the slow guided wave in long cortical bones.

Abstract
The frequency-dependent phase velocity, attenuation coefficient, and backscatter coefficient were measured from 0.8 to 1.2 MHz in 24 water-saturated nickel foams as trabecular-bone-mimicking phantoms. The power law fits to the measurements showed that the phase velocity, the attenuation coefficient, and the backscatter coefficient were proportional to the frequency with exponents n of 0.95, 1.29, and 3.18, respectively. A significant linear correlation was found between the phase velocity at 1.0 MHz and the porosity. In contrast, the best regressions for the normalized broadband ultrasound attenuation and the backscatter coefficient at 1.0 MHz were obtained with the polynomial fits of second order.

Abstract
In the present study, correlations of linear and nonlinear ultrasound parameters (speed of sound, normalized broadband ultrasound attenuation, and nonlinear parameter B/A) with bone mineral density and microarchitectural parameters were investigated in 28 bovine femoral trabecular bone samples in vitro. All three ultrasound parameters exhibited relatively high correlation coefficients with the indexes of bone quantity (bone mineral density and bone volume fraction) and lower correlation coefficients with the remaining microarchitectural parameters. These results suggest that B/A, in addition to speed of sound and attenuation, may have potential as an index for the assessment of bone status and osteoporosis.

Abstract
Thermotherapy uses a heat source that raises temperatures in the target tissue, and the temperature rise depends on the thermal properties of the tissue. Little is known about the temperature-dependent thermal properties of tissue, which prevents us from accurately predicting the temperature distribution of the target tissue undergoing thermotherapy. The present study reports the key thermal parameters (specific heat capacity, thermal conductivity and heat diffusivity) measured in ex vivo porcine liver while being heated from 20 ° C to 90 ° C and then naturally cooled down to 20 ° C. The study indicates that as the tissue was heated, all the thermal parameters resulted in plots with asymmetric quasi-parabolic curves with temperature, being convex downward with their minima at the turning temperature of 35-40 ° C. The largest change was observed for thermal conductivity, which decreased by 9.6% from its initial value (at 20 ° C) at the turning temperature (35 ° C) and rose by 45% at 90 ° C from its minimum (at 35 ° C). The minima were 3.567 mJ/(m(3) ∙ K) for specific heat capacity, 0.520 W/(m.K) for thermal conductivity and 0.141 mm(2)/s for thermal diffusivity. The minimum at the turning temperature was unique, and it is suggested that it be taken as a characteristic value of the thermal parameter of the tissue. On the other hand, the thermal parameters were insensitive to temperature and remained almost unchanged when the tissue cooled down, indicating that their variations with temperature were irreversible. The rate of the irreversible rise at 35 ° C was 18% in specific heat capacity, 40% in thermal conductivity and 38.3% in thermal diffusivity. The study indicates that the key thermal parameters of ex vivo porcine liver vary largely with temperature when heated, as described by asymmetric quasi-parabolic curves of the thermal parameters with temperature, and therefore, substantial influence on the temperature distribution of the tissue undergoing thermotherapy is expected.

Abstract
An optically transparent tissue-mimicking (TM) phantom whose acoustic properties are close to those of tissue was constructed for visualizing therapeutic effects by high intensity focused ultrasound (HIFU). The TM phantom was designed to improve a widely used standard bovine serum albumin (BSA) polyacrylamide hydrogel (PAG), which attenuated ultrasound far less than tissue and, unlike tissue, did not scatter ultrasound. A modified recipe has been proposed in the study by adding scattering glass beads with diameters of 40-80 μm (0.002% w/v) and by raising the concentration of acrylamide (30% v/v). The TM BSA-PAG constructed has an acoustic impedance of 1.67 MRayls, a speed of sound of 1576 m/s, an attenuation coefficient of 0.52 dB/cm at 1 MHz, a backscattering coefficient of 0.242 × 10(-3) 1/sr/cm at 1 MHz and a nonlinear parameter (B/A) of 5.7. These parameters are close to those of liver. The thermal and optical properties are almost the same as the standard BSA-PAG. The characteristic features of the thermal lesions by HIFU were observed to be more accurately visualized in the TM BSA-PAG than in the standard BSA-PAG. In conclusion, the proposed TM BSA-PAG acoustically mimics tissue better than the standard BSA-PAG and is expected to be preferentially used for assuring if a clinical HIFU device produces the thermal lesion as planned.

Abstract
Speed of sound (SOS) was measured in 14 bovine femoral trabecular bone samples with and without the cortical endplates with various thicknesses of 1.00, 1.31, 1.47, 1.75, and 2.00 mm. The presence of the cortical endplates resulted in an increase in the mean SOS of 16 m/s (+0.9%) to 91 m/s (+5.3%). The mean SOS measured in the samples with and without the cortical endplates exhibited similar significant correlations with apparent bone density (r = 0.86-0.91). All the SOS measurements were also found to be highly correlated with each other (r = 0.89-0.99).

Abstract
Phase velocity and normalized broadband ultrasound attenuation (nBUA) were measured in 22 marrow-filled and water-filled bovine femoral trabecular bone samples. Replacement of marrow by water led to a significant increase in the mean phase velocity of 47 ± 12 m/s (+3.1%), but a decrease in the mean nBUA of 10.4 ± 2.9 dB/cm/MHz (-38.9%). All the ultrasonic properties in the marrow-filled and water-filled samples exhibited significant negative Pearson's correlation coefficients of r = -0.87 to -0.92 with porosity. High correlations were also observed between pairs of the ultrasonic properties, with r = 0.85 to 0.93.

Abstract
Correlations between ultrasonic guided wave velocities and bone properties were investigated in bovine tibia in vitro. The velocities of the first arriving signal and the slow guided wave, termed V(FAS) and V(SGW), along the long axis of the tibia were measured at 200 kHz in 20 bovine tibiae using the axial transmission technique. V(FAS) yielded significant negative correlation coefficients of -0.54 to -0.66 with the bone properties. In contrast, V(SGW) yielded strong positive correlation coefficients of 0.68-0.84. The best univariate predictor of V(FAS) and V(SGW) was the cortical thickness yielding adjusted squared correlation coefficients of 0.41 and 0.69, respectively.

Abstract
The frequency-dependent attenuation and backscatter coefficients were measured in 25 bovine femoral trabecular bone samples from 0.2 to 1.2 MHz. When the average attenuation coefficient was fitted to a nonlinear power law α(f)=α(0)+α(1)f(n), the exponent n was found to be 1.65. In contrast, the average backscatter coefficient was fitted to a power law η(f)=η(1)f(n) and the exponent n was measured as 3.25. The apparent bone density was significantly correlated with the parameter α(1) (0.2-0.7 MHz: r = 0.852, 0.6-1.2 MHz: r = 0.832) as well as the backscatter coefficient (0.5 MHz: r = 0.751, 1.0 MHz: r = 0.808).

Abstract
The present study investigated the correlations of the group velocity, the phase velocity, and the velocity dispersion with the apparent bone density in bovine trabecular bone in vitro. The phase velocity exhibited the negative dispersion, consistent with the behavior in human trabecular bone. The group and the phase velocities were found to increase with increasing apparent bone density, respectively, exhibiting similar high correlations of r=0.94 and 0.96. The negative dispersion rate exhibited a decreasing dependence on the apparent bone density, with a significant correlation of r=-0.86.

Abstract
BACKGROUND AND AIM Although perforation of the colon is known as one of the main complications of endoscopic submucosal dissection (ESD) for colorectal tumor management, factors predictive of perforation have not been fully evaluated. This study aimed to determine the factors associated with perforation during colorectal ESD. METHODS Patients with colorectal tumors undergoing ESD were enrolled and their records were reviewed retrospectively. Age, sex, co-morbidity, medication history, procedure time, resection method, tumor size, location, gross morphology, the presence of fibrosis, and histologic findings were included as possible risk factors. In the cases where perforation had occurred, factors associated with the duration of hospitalization were analyzed. RESULTS One hundred eight lesions in 108 patients were eligible for inclusion in the study (68 patients were male; mean patient age was 63.01 ± 10.71 years). Mean tumor size was 27.59 ± 10.10 mm (range: 8 - 53 mm). Laterally spreading tumor was the most common type (75 %), followed by the protruding type (25 %). Procedure time was 61.95 ± 41.90 minutes (range: 5 - 198 minutes). Complete en bloc resection was achieved for 85 lesions (78.7 %). Perforation occurred in 22 patients (20.4 %). Multivariate analysis confirmed that tumor size [odds ratio (OR): 1.084; 95 % confidence interval (CI): 1.015 - 1.158; P = 0.017] and the presence of fibrosis (OR: 4.551; 95 %CI: 1.092 - 18.960; P = 0.037) were independent risk factors for perforation. All cases of perforation were managed with nonsurgical treatment. Younger age and abdominal pain appeared to be related to prolonged hospitalization. CONCLUSION Tumor size and fibrosis are important factors related to complications during colorectal ESD. Younger age and development of abdominal pain can predict the hospital course in patients with perforation after ESD.

Abstract
The modified Biot-Attenborough (MBA) model for acoustic wave propagation in porous media has been found useful to predict wave properties in cancellous bone. The present study is aimed at applying the MBA model to predict the dependence of phase velocity on porosity in cancellous bone. The MBA model predicts a phase velocity that decreases nonlinearly with porosity. The optimum values for input parameters of the MBA model, such as compressional speed c(m) of solid bone and phase velocity parameter s(2), were determined by comparing the predictions with previously published measurements in human calcaneus and bovine cancellous bone. The value of the phase velocity parameter s(2)=1.23 was obtained by curve fitting to the experimental data for 53 human calcaneus samples only, assuming a compressional speed c(m)=2500 m/s of solid bone. The root-mean-square error (RMSE) of the curve fit was 15.3m/s. The optimized value of s(2) for all 75 cancellous bone samples including 22 bovine samples was 1.42 with a value of 55 m/s for the RMSE of the curve fit. The latter fit was obtained by using of a value of c(m)=3200 m/s. Although the MBA model relies on the empirical parameters determined from experimental data, it is expected that the model can be usefully employed as a practical tool in the field of clinical ultrasonic bone assessment.

Abstract
The variations of phase velocity and normalized broadband ultrasonic attenuation (nBUA) with porosity were investigated in Polyacetal cuboid bone-mimicking phantoms with circular cylindrical pores running normal to the surface along the three orthogonal axes. The frequency-dependent phase velocity and attenuation coefficient in the phantoms with porosities from 0% to 65.9% were measured from 0.65 to 1.10 MHz. The results showed that the phase velocity at 880 kHz decreased linearly with porosity, whereas the nBUA increased linearly with porosity. This study provides a useful insight into the relationships between ultrasonic properties and porosity in bone at porosities lower than 70%.

Abstract
The frequency-dependent phase velocity and attenuation coefficient for the fast longitudinal wave in a water-saturated sandy sediment were measured over the frequency range from 0.3 to 1.0 MHz. The experimental data of phase velocity exhibited the significant negative dispersion, with the mean rate of decline of 120 +/- 20 m/s/MHz. The Biot model predicted the approximately nondispersive phase velocity and the grain-shearing (GS) model exhibited the slightly positive dispersion. In contrast, the predictions of the multiple scattering models for the negative dispersion in the glass-grain composite were in general agreement with the experimental data for the water-saturated sandy sediment measured here. The experimental data of attenuation coefficient was found to increase nonlinearly with frequency from 0.3 to 1.0 MHz. However, both the Biot and the GS models yielded the attenuation coefficient increasing almost linearly with frequency. The total attenuation coefficient given by the algebraic sum of absorption and scattering components showed a reasonable agreement with the experimental data for overall frequencies. This study suggests that the scattering is the principal mechanism responsible for the variations of phase velocity and attenuation coefficient with frequency in water-saturated sandy sediments at high frequencies.

Abstract
The sound velocity and the attenuation coefficient of EPDM (Ethylene-propylene Diene Monomer) composites incorporated with Silicon Carbide particles (SiCp's) of various volume fractions (0-40%) were experimentally and theoretically investigated. For the experiment a through-transmission technique was used. For the theoretical prediction, some mechanical property models such as Reuss model and Coherent Potential Approximation (CPA) model etc. were employed. The experimental results showed that the sound velocity decreased with the increase of the SiCp volume fraction up to 30% and then increased with the 40 vol% specimen. The attenuation coefficient was increased with the increasing SiCp volume fractions. The modified Reuss model with a longitudinal elastic modulus predicted most well the experimental sound velocity and elastic modulus results.

Abstract
Experimental observations of the subharmonic and ultraharmonic acoustic waves in water-saturated sandy sediment are reported in this paper. Acoustic pressures of both nonlinear acoustic waves strongly depend on the driving acoustic pressure at a transducer. The first ultraharmonic wave reaches a saturation value as the driving acoustic pressure increases. The acoustic pressure levels of both nonlinear acoustic waves exhibit some fluctuations in comparison with that of the primary acoustic wave as the receiving distance of hydrophone increases in sediment. The subharmonic and the ultraharmonic phenomena in this study show close resemblance to those produced in bubbly water.

Abstract
Tunneling magnetoresistance was found to be suppressed with decreasing temperature for magnetic tunnel junctions (MTJs) oxidized under high plasma power. A strong temperature dependence of the junction resistance was observed, along with zero-bias anomalies of dynamic resistance at low temperatures. Resistance shows a logarithmic dependence on temperature, and resistance versus temperature exhibits a scaling behavior. Our experimental data can be explained in a consistent way by the Kondo effect in the MTJs with the Kondo temperature TK=20-30 K.

Abstract
The Biot and the modified Biot-Attenborough (MBA) models have been found useful to understand ultrasonic wave propagation in cancellous bone. However, neither of the models, as previously applied to cancellous bone, allows for the angular dependence of acoustic properties with direction. The present study aims to account for the acoustic anisotropy in cancellous bone, by introducing empirical angle-dependent input parameters, as defined for a highly oriented structure, into the Biot and the MBA models. The anisotropy of the angle-dependent Biot model is attributed to the variation in the elastic moduli of the skeletal frame with respect to the trabecular alignment. The angle-dependent MBA model employs a simple empirical way of using the parametric fit for the fast and the slow wave speeds. The angle-dependent models were used to predict both the fast and slow wave velocities as a function of propagation angle with respect to the trabecular alignment of cancellous bone. The predictions were compared with those of the Schoenberg model for anisotropy in cancellous bone and in vitro experimental measurements from the literature. The angle-dependent models successfully predicted the angular dependence of phase velocity of the fast wave with direction. The root-mean-square errors of the measured versus predicted fast wave velocities were 79.2 m s(-1) (angle-dependent Biot model) and 36.1 m s(-1) (angle-dependent MBA model). They also predicted the fact that the slow wave is nearly independent of propagation angle for angles about 50 degrees , but consistently underestimated the slow wave velocity with the root-mean-square errors of 187.2 m s(-1) (angle-dependent Biot model) and 240.8 m s(-1) (angle-dependent MBA model). The study indicates that the angle-dependent models reasonably replicate the acoustic anisotropy in cancellous bone.

Abstract
Biot's theory and the modified Biot-Attenborough (MBA) model are applied to predict the dependences of acoustic characteristics on frequency and on porosity in cancellous bone. The phase velocities and the attenuation coefficients predicted by both theories are compared with the experimental data of bovine cancellous bone specimens published in the literature. Biot's theory successfully predicts the dependences of the phase velocity on frequency and on porosity in cancellous bone, whereas a significant discrepancy is observed between the predicted and the measured attenuation coefficients. The MBA model agrees well with the frequency and the porosity dependences of the phase velocity and the attenuation coefficient experimentally measured in bovine bones. Although the MBA model relies on phenomenological parameters derived from the experimental data, its approach to cancellous bone can be usefully employed in the field of clinical ultrasonic bone assessment.

Abstract
In this study, the effect of cortical thickness variation on the propagation of leaky Lamb waves is investigated by using an axial transmission technique commonly used to characterize long bones. Three Lucite plates with thicknesses of 1, 3, and 5 mm as bone phantoms and one bovine tibia with a cortical thickness of 2 mm were used at various low frequencies. Experimental measurements in bone phantoms show that the peak frequency and amplitude of excited Lamb modes strongly depend on the thickness of the Lucite plate. In the bovine tibia, the S0 and A0 Lamb modes are consistently observed in the frequency-thickness region from 0.2 to 1.0 MHz mm, and can be effectively launched at a frequency of 200 kHz, suggesting 200 kHz to be the optimal signal frequency for in vivo clinical applications. It can be also seen that both modes are affected by the frequency-thickness product, but the effect is greater for the A0 mode. Hence, the A0 Lamb mode seems more sensitive to cortical thickness change due to aging and osteoporosis. This study suggests that the use of leaky Lamb waves is feasible for ultrasonic bone assessment.

Abstract
Acoustic wave propagation in bovine cancellous bone is experimentally and theoretically investigated in the frequency range of 0.5-1 MHz. The phase velocity, attenuation coefficient, and broadband ultrasonic attenuation (BUA) of bovine cancellous bone are measured as functions of frequency and porosity. For theoretical estimation, the Modified Biot-Attenborough (MBA) model is employed with three new phenomenological parameters: the boundary condition, phase velocity, and impedance parameters. The MBA model is based on the idealization of cancellous bone as a nonrigid porous medium with circular cylindrical pores oriented normal to the surface. It is experimentally observed that the phase velocity is approximately nondispersive and the attenuation coefficient linearly increases with frequency. The MBA model predicts a slightly negative dispersion of phase velocity linearly with frequency and the nonlinear relationships of attenuation and BUA with porosity. The experimental results are in good agreement with the theoretical results estimated with the MBA model. It is expected that the MBA model can be usefully employed in the field of clinical bone assessment for the diagnosis of osteoporosis.

Abstract
Correlations between acoustic properties and bone density were investigated in the 12 defatted bovine cancellous bone specimens in vitro. Speed of sound (SOS) and broadband ultrasonic attenuation (BUA) were measured in three different frequency bandwidths from 0.5 to 2 MHz using three matched pairs of transducers with the center frequencies of 1, 2.25, and 3.5 MHz. The relative orientation between ultrasonic beam and bone specimen was the mediolateral (ML) direction of the bovine tibia. SOS shows significant linear positive correlation with apparent density for all three pairs of transducers. However, BUA shows relatively weak correlation with apparent density. SOS and BUA are only weakly correlated with each other. The linear combination of SOS and BUA in a multiple regression model leads to a significant improvement in predicting apparent density. The correlations among SOS, BUA, and bone density can be effectively and clearly represented in the three-dimensional space by the multiple regression model. These results suggest that the frequency range up to 1.5 MHz and the multiple regression model in the three-dimensional space can be useful in the osteoporosis diagnosis.

Abstract
The two SH3 domains and one SH2 domain containing adaptor protein Grb2 is an essential element of the Ras signaling pathway in multiple systems. The SH2 domain of Grb2 recognizes and interacts with phosphotyrosine residues on activated tyrosine kinases, whereas the SH3 domains bind to several proline-rich domain-containing proteins such as Sos1. To define the difference in Grb2-associated proteins in hepatocarcinoma cells, we performed coprecipitation analysis using recombinant GST-Grb2 fusion proteins and found that several protein components (p170, p125, p100, and p80) differently associated with GST-Grb2 proteins in human Chang liver and hepatocarcinoma HepG2 cells. Sos1 and p80 proteins dominantly bind to Grb2 fusion proteins in Chang liver, whereas p100 remarkably associate with Grb2 in HepG2 cells. Also GST-Grb2 SH2 proteins exclusively bound to the p46(Shc), p52(Shc), and p66(Shc) are important adaptors of the Ras pathway in HepG2 cells. The p100 protein has been identified as dynamin II. We observed that the N-SH3 and C-SH3 domains of Grb2 fusion proteins coprecipitated with dynamin II besides Sos1. These results suggest that dynamin II may be a functional molecule involved in Grb2-mediated signaling pathway on Ras activation for tumor progression and differentiation of hepatocarcinoma cells.

Abstract
Dynamin I is highly expressed in brain and plays a critical role in clathrin-mediated endocytosis and synaptic vesicle recycling. To elucidate the molecular mechanism by which expression of dynamin I is tissue-specifically regulated, we previously cloned and characterized the promoter of the mouse dynamin I gene and suggested that there is a negative regulatory element in this promoter region. In the present study, we showed that YY1 binds to this negative regulatory element located at -111 to -107 by using the EMSA and supershift analyses. Cotransfection experiment using an YY1 expression vector revealed that YY1 exerts a repressive role on the dynamin I gene promoter activity. These results demonstrate that transcription factor YY1 negatively regulates dynamin I expression via binding to the negative regulatory element.

Abstract
The neuron restrictive silencer element (NRSE) has been identified in several neuronal genes and confers neuron specificity by silencing transcription in nonneuronal cells. We have previously reported that Sp1 and an NF-kappaB-like element (NE-1) are required for the promoter activity of mouse dynamin I gene. In the present study, we found that the upstream regulatory region of the dynamin I promoter has an NRSE-like sequence and showed that neuron restrictive silencer factor (NRSF) binds to this element in neuronal cells as well as in nonneuronal cells. We also showed that NRSF activates the promoter activity of dynamin I gene in neuronal cells. From the results in this study, we suggest that NRSE might be involved in the neuron restriction of dynamin I expression, and NRSF could act as an activator for promoter activity of dynamin I gene in neuronal cells.

Abstract
Regarding the molecular mechanism of dynamin in receptor-mediated endocytosis, GTPase activity of dynamin has been thought to have a critical role in endocytic vesicle internalization. However, a recent report suggested that GTP-binding to dynamin itself activates the dynamin to recruit molecular machinery necessary for endocytosis. In this study, to investigate the role of GTP binding to dynamin II, we generated two mutant dynamin II constructs: G38V and K44E. G38V, its GTP binding site might be mainly occupied by GTP caused by reduced GTPase activity, and K44E mutant, its GTP binding site might be vacant, caused by its decreased affinity for GTP and GDP. From the analysis of the ratio of GTP vs GDP bound to dynamin, we confirmed these properties. To test the effect of these mutant dynamins on endocytosis, we performed flow cytometry and confocal immunofluorescence analysis and found that these two mutants have inhibitory effect on transferrin-induced endocytosis. Whereas fluorescent transferrin was completely internalized in wild-type (WT) dynamin II expressing cells, no intracellular accumulation of fluorescent transferrin was found in the cells overexpressing K44E and G38V mutant. Interestingly, the amount of GTP bound to K44E was increased when endocytosis was induced than that bound to WT. The present results suggested that the GTPase activity of dynamin II is required for formation of endocytic vesicle and GTP-binding to dynamin II per se is not sufficient for stimulating endocytosis.

Abstract
Dynamin I is expressed at high levels in brain and its expression is regulated during the developmental stages of brain. To elucidate the molecular mechanism by which the expression is tissue-specifically regulated, we cloned the 5'-flanking region of the mouse dynamin I gene and determined the nucleotide sequence of 1036 bases upstream from the translation start site. Transient transfection studies with a chloramphenicol acetyltransferase reporter gene in neuroblastoma NS20Y and Lewis lung cells demonstrated that the 5'-flanking region has a cell-type-specific promoter activity. Deletion analyses demonstrated that the minimal promoter activity was detected in the proximal region 195 bp upstream of the translation initiation codon (-90 to +105). The minimal promoter was embedded in a GC-rich region (75% GC content), in which an Sp1-binding motif and a nuclear factor (NF)-kappa B-like element (NE-1) were found, but it lacked TATA and CAAT boxes. Mutational analysis and electrophoretic mobility-shift assay analysis revealed that Sp1 binds to the Sp1 site and that this element is critical for the promoter activity of the dynamin I gene. We found that the NE-1 sequence is required for the expression of the dynamin I gene but NEBP (NE-1-binding protein), which binds to the NE-1 sequence, is not NF-kappa B. We also found that one base in the NE-1 sequence (the underlined G residue in GGGATTCGCGGA) is critical for binding specificity to discriminate between NEBP and NF-kappa B. By UV cross-linking analysis, we found that NEBP is an approx. 104 kDa nuclear protein.

Abstract
A study was conducted to clarify whether green tea tannin ameliorated cisplatin-induced renal injury in terms of lactate dehydrogenase and malondialdehyde leakage from a renal epithelial cell line, swine-derived LLC-PK1 cells in culture. Green tea tannin was shown to suppress the cytotoxicity of cisplatin, the suppressive effect increasing with the dose of green tea tannin. The effect of cisplatin was then investigated in rats given green tea tannin for 40 days before cisplatin administration and in control rats given no green tea tannin. In control rats, blood, urinary and renal parameters and the activities of antioxidative enzymes in renal tissue deviated from the normal range, indicating dysfunction of the kidneys. In contrast, rats given green tea tannin showed decreased blood levels of urea nitrogen and creatinine, and decreased urinary levels of protein and glucose, reflecting less damage to the kidney. In this group, the activity of catalase in the renal tissue was increased, while the level of malondialdehyde was decreased, suggesting the involvement of radicals in the normalizing of kidney function. Based on the evidence available it appeared that green tea tannin eliminated oxidative stress and was beneficial to renal function.

Abstract
OBJECTIVES To compare the effect of using two region of interest (ROI) types on calculating the fractal dimensions of trabecular bone during simulated osteoporosis. METHODS Ten 5 mm thick cross-sections from the long bone of a cow were progressively decalcified in 0.1 N Hcl for 5, 10, 20, 30, 60 and 90 min intervals, and radiographed using 0 degrees projection angle in a specially designed device. Two types of ROI (the ruggedness of the boundary and bone profiles) were placed on each digital image. Fractal dimensions and variance in mean pixel intensity were computed from each ROI using the caliper method in ImageFractal (National Institutes of Health, Washington, DC, USA). Correlation analysis quantified the relationship between changes in variance and fractal dimensions of the two types of ROI. RESULTS A Strong correlation (r=0.90 approximately 0.98, P</=0.0026) was found between variance in mean pixel intensity and decreasing fractal dimensions calculated from bone profiles. There was no consistency in the ruggedness of the boundary and increasing decalcification. CONCLUSIONS The fractal dimensions used to characterize the ruggedness of a boundary of trabecular bone in a two-dimensional ROI are inadequate for the detection of osteoporosis, but those calculated from bone profiles may be a sensitive descriptor of trabecular bone structure.

Abstract
We have realized a novel atom trap in an axicon (conical hollow) mirror, using a frequency-modulated, single-diode laser. Different spatial distributions of trapped atoms such as a ball and a ring are observed. We show that our numerical simulations are consistent with experimental results. In particular, the ring diameter is found to be approximately the separation between the mirror axis and the magnetic field axis. The axicon trap may be useful as a precooled atom source for cold atomic beams, atom funnels, and atom waveguides.

Abstract
We present a novel and simple magneto-optical trap in pyramidal and in conical hollow mirrors, using a single beam. A diode laser having modulation sidebands at microwaves is used for cooling, trapping, and repumping of rubidium atoms in a vapor cell. When the laser is circularly polarized and sent into the hollow region, three pairs of counterpropagating beams are automatically produced therein that have the same polarization configuration as that of a conventional six-beam magneto-optical trap. The fluorescence by the trapped atoms and its mirror image are observed simultaneously. This system may be useful for atom-manipulation applications such as gravitational atom traps and atom waveguides.

Abstract
Steroid hormone receptors regulate mouse mammary tumor virus (MMTV) gene expression by binding to hormone response DNA elements present in the long terminal repeat. Tissue-specific expression of MMTV is unlikely to be regulated by steroid hormone-receptor complex alone, and mammary cell-specific factors might play a role in the hormone-induced transcriptional activation. In this report we have investigated the function of a novel cis-acting element designated Kil (-204 to -188) which is located adjacent to the distal glucocorticoid response element, in steroid hormone-induced transcription of MMTV. Electrophoretic mobility shift assays indicate that cellular factors bind to the Kil element, and dexamethasone stimulation results in alterations in the binding pattern of proteins in this region. By transient transfection assays using wild type and deletion mutants of the Kil element, we show that this novel cis-acting element is necessary for hormone-induced transcription of MMTV and functions in mammary tumor cells but not in NIH/3T3 cells. Mutagenesis of the Kil sequence suggests that the entire Kil element functioning as one unit is necessary for hormone-induced transcription of MMTV. When placed in the context of heterologous promoters, neither Kil element nor glucocorticoid response element is able to induce significant hormone-induced transcription of MMTV. The presence of both the DNA elements in tandem results in optimal induction of transcription in the presence of steroid hormones. Our results also indicate that the Kil element functions in human breast carcinoma cell lines such as T47D and MCF-7. These results suggest that Kil element in combination with distal glucocorticoid response element functions as a mammary cell-specific enhancer to regulate MMTV transcription.

Abstract
The absolute configuration of the anti-tumor complex trans(OH)-Pt(OH)2(malonato)(1R,2R-cyclohexanediamine) was determined by X-ray anomalous scattering technique. The final unit cell was monoclinic, space group P2(1) with a = 9.142 A, b = 7.788 A, c = 11.946 A, beta = 96.48 degrees, Z = 2. The crystal structure was determined by direct method and difference Fourier synthesis, and refined to R = 0.025 and Rw = 0.033 based on 2768 independent reflections. The platinum atom has roughly octahedral coordination. The cyclohexane ring has the expected chair configuration, with two amino groups in equatorial positions while the malonato ligand, in contrast, shows a boat conformation for six membered Pt O-C-C-C-O ring.

Abstract
The correlates of suicide rates were determined by conducting a multivariate study of sociodemographic indicators and suicide rates of 261 Canadian census divisions. Twenty-one sociodemographic variables were entered into a stepwise multiple linear regression to develop a model for suicide rates. The important variables were mortality rate for all causes of death, the age of the population, average family income, population density, proportion with no religious affiliation, proportion of Francophones, unemployment, immigration, proportion of Native people, a regional effect for British Columbia and the north, and growth by mobility, explaining 62% of the observed variation. This spatial ecologic analysis highlights the importance of cultural differences in explaining the variation of suicide rates. The analysis supports the previously found negative relationship between income and suicide while contrasting from previous studies in determining a inverse relationship with unemployment and an inverse relationship with the age distribution.
