Abstract
PURPOSE/OBJECTIVE(S) CD19-directed chimeric antigen receptor T-cell therapy (CART) has led to remarkable outcomes in patients with relapsed or refractory (R/R) non-Hodgkin's lymphomas (NHL), yet ∼50% of patients relapse. Predictive factors associated with high risk of relapse following CART have been identified in the literature. Studies have shown a potential improvement in outcomes with the use of bridging radiation (RT) prior to CART. The purpose of this study is to determine the incidence of patients meeting high risk criteria who have disease that could be encompassed in a standard radiation plan prior to CART. MATERIALS/METHODS This was a single-center, retrospective study of patients with R/R NHL who received CART from 2018 to 2022. Data were obtained from the EHR and manual chart review was used to identify patients with disease encompassable in a standard radiation plan defined as <5 malignant lesions on pre-apheresis radiological studies. These patients were then screened for presence of ≥1 high risk criteria: bulky disease ≥10 cm, ≥1 extranodal (EN) sites, LDH ≥normal, or ≥1 lesion with SUVmax ≥10. Descriptive statistics were used to make inferences about the population. RESULTS Eighty-one R/R NHL patients were evaluated with a median age of 65 years (range 23-84), 60% male, and received a median of 2 (range 1-7) prior lines of therapy. CART products included axi-cel (62%), brexu-cel (7%), liso-cel (16%), and tisa-cel (15%). Forty (49%) patients would have been eligible for bridging RT (<5 sites on pre-apheresis radiologic studies), including 29 patients who met high risk criteria: 19 had ≥1 lesion with SUVmax ≥10, 16 with bulky disease, 6 with ≥1 EN site, and 3 with elevated LDH. At 3 months post-CART, clinical response data were available for 19 high risk patients with ORR of 79% (11 CR, 4 PR, 1 SD, and 3 PD), compared to 8 patients with standard risk disease with ORR of 88% (7 CR and 1 PD). Of those with less than a CR, 8/9 met high risk criteria: 4 with bulky disease, 6 had ≥1 lesion with SUVmax ≥10, and 2 with ≥1 EN site. There were 9/40 patients who received bridging therapy, and only 2 high risk patients received bridging RT. One patient with transformed DLBCL had persistent disease in the nasopharynx following RCHOP x3C and R-HyperCVAD, and received 20 Gy/10 fx as a bridge to CART resulting in a continued CR at 23 months of follow-up. Another patient with non-DH, GCB-like DLBCL received R-CHOP x6C (achieved CR) but relapsed <1 year later and then received R-ICE x2C with PD in the left shoulder, which was radiated with 30 Gy/10 fx for pain as a bridge to CART, but experienced disease relapse 6 months after CART. CONCLUSION Approximately 35% (28/81) of patients were classified as high risk of relapse after CART and had disease encompassable in a standard radiation plan. Of these patients, 44% (8/18) experienced either PR, SD or PD at 3 months post-CART. Future studies are needed to determine the role of bridging RT prior to CART as a strategy to improve outcomes and prevent relapse in high-risk NHL patients.

Abstract
OBJECTIVES To assess the efficacy and safety of combined phacoemulsification and excimer laser trabeculostomy (ELT) in eyes with cataract and mild controlled glaucoma or ocular hypertension (OHT). METHODS Single-centre analysis of eyes that underwent phacoemulsification and ELT between 2017 and 2021. Change in intraocular pressure (IOP), glaucoma medication requirements, corrected distance visual acuity (CDVA), complications and re-interventions were evaluated. Success was defined as a reduction ≥20% from preoperative IOP, an IOP ≤ 14 mmHg or a reduction in glaucoma medication requirements with an IOP equal or lower than the preoperative IOP. RESULTS Mean follow-up was 658 ± 64 days. Mean preoperative IOP was 17.76 ± 4.88 mmHg, it decreased to 15.35 ± 3.10 mmHg at 1 year (n = 37) (p = 0.006) and to 14.00 ± 3.78 at 3 years (n = 8) (p = 0.074). Mean number of glaucoma medication requirements decreased from 2.02 ± 1.0 preoperatively to 1.02 ± 0.96 at 1 year (n = 37) (p < 0.001) and to 1.63 ± 0.92 at 3 years (n = 8) (p = 0.197). Complete success was achieved in 17.7% of eyes and qualified success in 54.8%. Two eyes of 2 patients had early postoperative hyphema. Two eyes of 1 patient underwent filtering surgery 2 months after the procedure, and 2 eyes of 1 patient underwent laser trabeculoplasty 3.8 years after the procedure due to uncontrolled IOP. CONCLUSIONS Combined phacoemulsification and ELT is effective and safe in eyes with mild glaucoma or OHT and cataract. It significantly reduced IOP and glaucoma medication requirements 1 year after surgery.

Rationale
Obstructive sleep apnea (OSA) is prevalent in acute coronary syndrome (ACS) patients and is a cause of secondary hypertension.
Objectives
To evaluate the long-term effects of OSA and CPAP treatment on blood pressure (BP) control in patients discharged after an ACS.
Methods
Post hoc analysis of the ISAACC study included 1803 patients admitted for ACS (NCT01335087). Patients with OSA (apnea-hypopnea index ≥15 events/h) were randomly assigned to receive either CPAP or/and usual care and followed up for one to 5 years. Office BP was determined at each visit.
Measurements and Main Results
We included 596 patients without OSA, 605 patients in the CPAP group, and 602 patients in the usual care group. 52% of the patients had a diagnosis of hypertension at baseline. Median age and body mass index were 59 [52.0;67.0] years and 28.2 [25.6;31.2] kg/m2, respectively. After a median [25th;75th percentile] follow-up of 41.2 [18.3;59.6] months, BP changes were similar between OSA and non-OSA groups. However, we observed an increase in BP in the third tertile of the AHI (AHI>40 events/h) with a maximum difference in mean BP of +3.3 mmHg at 30 months. OSA patients with good CPAP adherence (≥4 hours/night) reduced mean BP after 18 months compared to non-OSA and poor CPAP adherence patients, maximum mean difference (95% CI) of -4.7 (-6.7,-2.7) mmHg. In patients with severe OSA we observed a maximum mean difference of -7.1 (-10.3,-3.8) mmHg.
Conclusions
In patients discharged after an ACS, severe OSA is associated with a long-term increase in BP, which is reduced by good CPAP adherence.

Abstract
Two TiO2-rGO nanocomposites were prepared by hydrothermal method from commercial TiO2 (P25 and Hombikat UV100, HBK). In both cases TiO2 nanoparticles appeared intimate and homogeneously distributed on rGO surface, but forming a dense network in P25-rGO nanocomposite, and a more open structure in HBK-rGO. Zeta potential and particle size distribution favored the ease of HBK-rGO nanocomposite to form stable suspensions. A comparative analysis of these two photocatalysts was performed on the pilot plant scale solar assisted photodegradation of a 200 μg·L-1 or 5 mg·L-1 mixture of persistent and biorecalcitrant pollutants in deionized water (methomyl, pyrimethanil, isoproturon and alachlor, all used as pesticides). Complete removal of pesticides was achieved, though faster with P25-rGO when O2 was the oxidant. However, the use of hydrogen peroxide (H2O2) dosage as oxidant speeded up pesticides removal, but HBK-rGO performance resulted much improved. Finally, at realistic very low concentrations of 200 μgeach pesticide·L-1, the complete removal of pesticides was achieved at very short times (<25 min), showing the efficiency of the synthetized TiO2-rGO nanocomposites in this pilot-plat scale solar process to mitigate refractory and biorecalcitrant contaminants on effluents as a sustainable and efficient process.

Abstract
BACKGROUND AND PURPOSE Our aim was to use 2D convolutional neural networks for automatic segmentation of the spinal cord and traumatic contusion injury from axial T2-weighted MR imaging in a cohort of patients with acute spinal cord injury. MATERIALS AND METHODS Forty-seven patients who underwent 3T MR imaging within 24 hours of spinal cord injury were included. We developed an image-analysis pipeline integrating 2D convolutional neural networks for whole spinal cord and intramedullary spinal cord lesion segmentation. Linear mixed modeling was used to compare test segmentation results between our spinal cord injury convolutional neural network (Brain and Spinal Cord Injury Center segmentation) and current state-of-the-art methods. Volumes of segmented lesions were then used in a linear regression analysis to determine associations with motor scores. RESULTS Compared with manual labeling, the average test set Dice coefficient for the Brain and Spinal Cord Injury Center segmentation model was 0.93 for spinal cord segmentation versus 0.80 for PropSeg and 0.90 for DeepSeg (both components of the Spinal Cord Toolbox). Linear mixed modeling showed a significant difference between Brain and Spinal Cord Injury Center segmentation compared with PropSeg (P < .001) and DeepSeg (P < .05). Brain and Spinal Cord Injury Center segmentation showed significantly better adaptability to damaged areas compared with PropSeg (P < .001) and DeepSeg (P < .02). The contusion injury volumes based on automated segmentation were significantly associated with motor scores at admission (P = .002) and discharge (P = .009). CONCLUSIONS Brain and Spinal Cord Injury Center segmentation of the spinal cord compares favorably with available segmentation tools in a population with acute spinal cord injury. Volumes of injury derived from automated lesion segmentation with Brain and Spinal Cord Injury Center segmentation correlate with measures of motor impairment in the acute phase. Targeted convolutional neural network training in acute spinal cord injury enhances algorithm performance for this patient population and provides clinically relevant metrics of cord injury.

Abstract
Plant breeding has been very successful in developing improved varieties using conventional tools and methodologies. Nowadays, the availability of genomic tools and resources is leading to a new revolution of plant breeding, as they facilitate the study of the genotype and its relationship with the phenotype, in particular for complex traits. Next Generation Sequencing (NGS) technologies are allowing the mass sequencing of genomes and transcriptomes, which is producing a vast array of genomic information. The analysis of NGS data by means of bioinformatics developments allows discovering new genes and regulatory sequences and their positions, and makes available large collections of molecular markers. Genome-wide expression studies provide breeders with an understanding of the molecular basis of complex traits. Genomic approaches include TILLING and EcoTILLING, which make possible to screen mutant and germplasm collections for allelic variants in target genes. Re-sequencing of genomes is very useful for the genome-wide discovery of markers amenable for high-throughput genotyping platforms, like SSRs and SNPs, or the construction of high density genetic maps. All these tools and resources facilitate studying the genetic diversity, which is important for germplasm management, enhancement and use. Also, they allow the identification of markers linked to genes and QTLs, using a diversity of techniques like bulked segregant analysis (BSA), fine genetic mapping, or association mapping. These new markers are used for marker assisted selection, including marker assisted backcross selection, ‘breeding by design’, or new strategies, like genomic selection. In conclusion, advances in genomics are providing breeders with new tools and methodologies that allow a great leap forward in plant breeding, including the ‘superdomestication’ of crops and the genetic dissection and breeding for complex traits.

Abstract
Brewing industry by-products are important animal feedstuff alternatives for local swine producers in Córdoba, Argentina. The high content of nutrients makes these by-products vulnerable to bacterial and fungal contamination. The objectives of the present study were (1) to determine the presence of Aspergillus section Flavi in brewer's grain used to feed pigs and (2) to evaluate the incidence of aflatoxin B(1) in the substrate. Total fungal count of most samples exceeded the levels proposed as feed quality limits, and most Aspergillus section Flavi strains found were able to produce high amounts of AFB(1) in vitro. However, the incidence of AFB(1) was low. The presence of contamination by aflatoxicogenic species in feedstuff might affect the productivity of swine producers and indirectly represents a public health issue.

Abstract
CLINICAL CASE A 29-year-old woman presented with a subjective sensation of ocular asymmetry from several months beforehand. Ophthalmological exam showed 3,5 mm right enophthalmos and light hypoglobus. CT (Computerized Tomography) scan showed a collapsed maxillar sinus, and a thinned inferior orbital wall. The diagnosis of silent sinus syndrome was made. An endoscopic maxillary antrostomy with uncinectomy was made with an excellent surgical outcome. DISCUSSION Clinical features of silent sinus syndrome are described, including diagnosis, differential diagnosis and treatment.

Abstract
Drosophila melanogaster resistance against the parasitoid wasp Leptopilina boulardi is under the control of a single gene (Rlb), with two alleles, the resistant one being dominant. Using strains bearing deletions, we previously demonstrated that the 55E2-E6; 55F3 region on chromosome 2R is involved in the resistance phenomenon. In this paper, we first restricted the Rlb containing region by mapping at the molecular level the breakpoints of the Df(2R)Pc66, Df(2R)P34 and Df(2R)Pc4 deficiencies, using both chromosomal in situ hybridization and Southern analyses. The resistance gene was localized in a 100 kb fragment, predicted to contain about 10 different genes. Male recombination genetic experiments were then performed, leading to identification of two possible candidates for the Rlb gene. Potential involvement of one of this genes, edl/mae, is discussed.

Abstract
Sexually transmitted diseases (STD) are a group of transmittable diseases acquired fundamentally through sexual contact. STD are a social problem resulting from demographic explosion and changes in sexual conduct, which affects teenagers and adults of all socioeconomic strata. The goal of this work was to establish the actual state of the different STD within the studied population. Samples of vaginal fluids, endocervical materials and urethral exudates taken from 2,630 patients during five years were processed. 1,341 samples tested positive to one or more of the microorganisms, 1,099 corresponding to female patients and 242 to male patients. The microorganisms found in women were: Gardnerella vaginalis (39.1%), Candida albicans (21.3%), Trichomonas vaginalis (16.8%), Chlamydia trachomatis (11.5%); Neisseria gonorrhoeae (3.4%), Mycoplasma hominis (2.6%); Ureaplasma urealyticum (4.1%) and Treponema pallidum (1.6%). Associations were: Gardnerella vaginalis with Trichomonas vaginalis (6%), Gardnerella vaginalis with Candida albicans (5.1%); Trichomonas vaginalis with Neisseria gonorrhoeae (2.2%) and Gardnerella vaginalis with Chlamydia trachomatis (2.1%). In men, gonococcic urethritis represented 37.8%, non-gonococcic urethritis 55.4% and Treponema pallidum 6.8%. A decrease in syphilis, gonococcic urethritis and gonococcic cervicitis was observed, increasing the prevalence of non-gonococcic urethritis and cervicitis. This study showed that in our environment the actual tendency of STD is still high.

Abstract
Hobo is one of the three Drosophila melanogaster transposable elements, together with the P and I elements, that seem to have recently invaded the genome of this species. Surveys of the presence of hobo in strains from different geographical and temporal origins have shown that recently collected strains contain complete and deleted elements with high sequence similarity (H strains), but old strains lack hobo elements (E strains). Besides the canonical hobo sequences, both H and E strains show other poorly known hobo-related sequences. In the present work, we analyze the presence, cytogenetic location, and structure of some of these sequences in E strains of D. melanogaster. By in situ hybridization, we found that euchromatic hobo-related sequences were in fixed positions in all six E strains analyzed: 38C in the 2L arm; 42B and 55A in the 2R arm; 79E and 80B in the 3L arm; and 82C, 84C, and 84D in the 3R arm. Sequence comparison shows that some of the hobo-related sequences from Oregon-R and iso-1 strains are similar to the canonical hobo element, but their analysis reveals that they are substantially diverged and rearranged and cannot code for a functional transposase. Our results suggest that these ubiquitous hobo-homologous sequences are immobile and are distantly related to the modern hobo elements from D. melanogaster.

Abstract
Antimicrobial sensitivity was evaluated from 120 strains of coagulase-negative Staphylococcus (CoNS), isolated from urinary infections. The isolated species were identified by conventional methods and sensitivity to vancomycin, tetracyclin, norfloxacin, cephalothin erythromycin, clindamycin, oxacillin, penicillin, cyprofloxacin, ampicillin and ampicillin/sulbactam was tested by the agar dilution technique and the diffusion in disc technique. The distribution of the species was: Staphylococcus epidermidis 26 (21.6%), S. haemolyticus 48 (40.0%), S. saprophyticus 40 (33.4%) and S. simulans 6 (5%). CoNS strains extracted from urinary infections showed a high percentage of vancomycin and tetracyclin sensitivity, and a low sensitivity to beta-lactamic antibiotics, except ampicillin/sulbactam and cephalotin. Isolation percentage resistance to oxacillin was less than 48%. Strains resistant to oxacillin were considered as resistant to both penicillin and ampicillin. From 42% to 80% of S. haemolyticus, S. saprophyticus, Staphylococcus epidermidis and S. simulans were positive to the adherence test. Results from this work showed that slime producing CoNS strains, isolated in Río Cuarto Hospital, had different percentages of resistance to the studied antimicrobial agents.

Abstract
Most studies focusing on detecting microorganisms in air by polymerase chain reaction (PCR) have used a liquid impinger to sample bioaerosols, mainly because a liquid sample is easy to be processed by PCR analysis. Nevertheless, the use of multiple-hole impactors for the analysis of bioaerosols by PCR has not been reported despite its great utility in culture analysis. In this study we have modified the impaction onto an agar surface sampling method to impaction onto a liquid medium using the MAS-100 air sampler (Merck) (single-stage multiple-hole impactor). To evaluate the recovery of airborne microorganisms of both sampling methods, a suspension containing Escherichia coli was artificially aerosolized and bioaerosols were collected onto Tergitol-7 agar and phosphate-buffered saline (PBS) with the MAS-100. A linear regression analysis of the results showed a strong positive correlation between both sampling methods (r = 0.99, slope 0.99, and y intercept 0.07). Afterwards, the method of impingement into a liquid medium was used to study airborne Legionella pneumophila by PCR. A total of 64 samples were taken at a wastewater treatment plant, a chemical plant, and an office building and analyzed by culture and PCR. Results showed that three samples were positive both by PCR and plate culture, and that nine samples negative by plate culture were positive by PCR, proving that L. pneumophila was present in bioaerosols from these three different environments. The results demonstrate the utility of this single-stage multiple-hole impactor for sampling bioaerosols, both by culture and by PCR.

Abstract
METHODS A simple and reproducible proposed for Benito et al. scheme for identification biotypes of Gardnerella vaginalis has been developed, based on reactions for lipase, hippurate, hydrolysis, and beta-galactosidase. RESULTS 11 biotypes were found among 130 strains from women with and without bacterial vaginosis (non-specific vaginitis) 1A, 5B; 8B, 5C, 8C, 1E, 6G and 7G in women with vaginosis and the biotypes 1A, 5B, 8B, 1C, 8F and 6H in women without vaginosis. These biotypes 1A; 5B and 8B were found in two groups. CONCLUSIONS These data suggest that some biotypes of G. vaginalis are associated with bacterial vaginosis.

Abstract
The aims of this retrospective study were to (i) determine the risk of contamination of lower respiratory tract samples obtained during fiberoscopy in children; (ii) determine the incidence and profile of the bacterial flora of the lower respiratory tract in a selected group of asthmatic children at high risk for bacterial infection; and (iii) identify risk markers for such findings. In 29 asthmatic children, comparison of bacterial cultures of specimens obtained from the upper and, lower respiratory tracts showed that contamination was a possibility in only 3.4% (1/29) of cases. The results from bacterial samples obtained via flexible bronchoscopy in a further 273 consecutively investigated physician-diagnosed asthmatic children were analysed. Patients were selected for bronchoscopy if they had severe chronic asthma or in order to exclude other diseases able to provoke wheezing. Their mean (SD) and median ages were 32.2 (38.3) and 17.5 mo, respectively. The incidence of positive bacterial cultures was 12.1% (33/273 patients). Bacterial flora included H. influenzae (39.5%, 15/38), B. catarrhalis (23.7%, 9/38), Neisseria species (7.9%, 3/38), M. pneumoniae (7.9%, 3/38), P. non-aeruginosa (5.3%, 2/38) and P. aeruginosa (2.6%, 1/38). No clinical or radiological markers were significantly associated with lower respiratory tract bacterial infection. Large quantities of bacteria were present in the lower respiratory tracts of a substantial number of children (1/8) in this selected group of asthmatics. For the moment, however, the clinical implications of this finding remain unclear.

Abstract
The present study compared Argentine (N = 39) and U.S. (N = 43) children and their mothers on exploratory, symbolic, and social play and interaction when children were 20 months of age. Patterns of cultural similarity and difference emerged. In both cultures, boys engaged in more exploratory play than girls, and girls engaged in more symbolic play than boys; mothers of boys engaged in more exploratory play than mothers of girls, and mothers of girls engaged in more symbolic play than mothers of boys. Moreover, in both cultures, individual variation in children's exploratory and symbolic play was specifically associated with individual variation in mothers' exploratory and symbolic play, respectively. Between cultures, U.S. children and their mothers engaged in more exploratory play, whereas Argentine children and their mothers engaged in more symbolic play. Moreover, Argentine mothers exceeded U.S. mothers in social play and verbal praise of their children. During an early period of mental and social growth, general developmental processes in play may be pervasive, but dyadic and cultural structures are apparently specific. Overall, Argentine and U.S. dyads utilized different modes of exploration, representation, and interaction--emphasizing "other-directed" acts of pretense versus "functional" and "combinatorial" exploration, for example--and these individual and dyadic allocentric versus idiocentric stresses accord with larger cultural concerns of collectivism versus individualism in the two societies.

Abstract
Sexually transmitted diseases (STD) are acquired mainly through sexual intercourse, being one of the most frequent groups of infectious diseases worldwide and consequently an important public health problem. The aim of this paper was to determine the current state of STD and to compare different diagnostic methods in the population studied. A total of 1060 samples from vaginal flows, endocervical material and urethral discharge were studied during 3 years. Of the total samples, 583 were positive, 493 in women and 90 in men. Microorganisms found in women were: Gardnerella vaginalis (39.3%), Candida albicans (21.1%), Trichomonas vaginalis (17.3%), Candida trachomatis (11.3%), Neisseria gonorrhoeae (3.2%): Mycoplasma hominis and Ureaplasma urelyticum (6.5%) and Treponema pallidum (1.4%), the associations found were, Gardnerella vaginalis with Trichomonas vaginalis 5.5%; Gardnerella vaginalis with Candida albicans 4.9%; Trichomonas vaginalis with Neisseria gonorrhoeae (2.2%) and Gardnerella vaginalis with Chlamydia trachomatis (1.9%). In men, gonococcal urethritis (UG) represented 37.7% non UG 55.6% and Treponema pallidum 6.7%. These results indicate a decrease in sifilis and in UG when compared to previous studies showing that gonococcal cervicitis had also decreased. We found an important increase in the prevalence of urethritis and non gonococcal cervicitis in agreement with world statistics which consider these diseases as the most common venereal ones. It is necessary to increase the search for Chlamydia trachomatis in pregnant women due to vertical transmission. It should be noted that, in spite of certain fluctuations, the incidence of the STD in our area is still unacceptably high.

This study investigated and compared ideas about parenting in Argentine, Belgian, French, Israeli, Italian, Japanese, and U.S. mothers of 20-month-olds. Mothers evaluated their competence, satisfaction, investment, and role balance in parenting and rated attributions of successes and failures in 7 parenting tasks to their own ability, effort, or mood, to difficulty of the task, or to child behavior. Few cross-cultural similarities emerged; rather, systematic culture effects for both self-evaluations and attributions were common, such as varying degrees of competence and satisfaction in parenting, and these effects are interpreted in terms of specific cultural proclivities and emphases. Child gender was not an influential factor. Parents' self-evaluations and attributions help to explain how and why parents parent and provide further insight into the broader cultural contexts of children's development.

Abstract
PURPOSE There are few reports of pathological kidney findings in ureteropelvic junction obstruction in pediatric patients. The role of hyperfiltration in the genesis and progression of these changes has been a matter of debate. We determine whether segmental sclerosis is evidence of hyperfiltration and renal damage in children who underwent surgery for ureteropelvic junction obstruction. MATERIALS AND METHODS We retrospectively analyzed the clinical records of 38 children with a mean age of 4.4 years with ureteropelvic junction obstruction. Histological changes in biopsies (39 renal units) and nephrectomy specimens (2 renal units) were compared with clinical history, imaging studies and urinary protein excretion. RESULTS Renal histology was essentially normal in 75% of the biopsies. Focal dilatation of Bowman's space and occasionally of the collecting tubules was noted in a third of this group. Abnormal changes consistent with renal damage were present in 25% of the biopsies, including variable degrees of interstitial chronic inflammation, eosinophilic acellular material within Bowman's space and focal concentric glomerulosclerosis. Severe changes, chronic interstitial fibrosis and inflammation, and diffuse glomerulosclerosis were only found in nephrectomy specimens, while eosinophilic acellular material and glomerulosclerosis were observed in 7 biopsies. In all of these renal units there was evidence of hyperfiltration with bilateral or unilateral ureteropelvic junction obstruction with a contralateral multicystic dysplastic kidney. Urinary protein excretion in 19 patients was increased in obstructed compared with normal contralateral kidneys (p < 0.05). CONCLUSIONS Hyperfiltration should be considered a mechanism involved in the progression of histological changes in kidneys with ureteropelvic junction obstruction. We suggest that early surgical correction be considered in obstructed kidneys at risk for hyperfiltration.

Abstract
This study is an attempt to trace the fate of hobo elements in the genomes of E strains of Drosophila melanogaster that have been transfected with pHFL1, a plasmid containing an autonomous hobo. Such long-term population studies (over 105 generations) could be very useful for better understanding the population and genomic dynamics of transposable elements and their pattern of insertions. Molecular analyses of hobo elements in the transfected lines were performed using Southern blots of XhoI-digested genomic DNAs. The complete element was observed in all six injected lines. In two lines we observed, at generation 100, two deleted elements, which did not correspond to Th1 and Th2. The results obtained by the in situ method show that the number of hybridization sites increases in each line and prove that the hobo element may be amplified in an RM genome. The hobo activity does not seem to be systematically correlated with the number of hobo elements. After generation 85, the evolution of the hobo element's insertion site number depends on the injected line. In all lines, the total number of insertions remains quite small, between 0 and 11. Hobo elements are located on each of the chromosomal arms. We describe 'hotspots'-insertion sites present in all lines and in all generations. On the 3R arm, a short inversion appeared once at generation 85.

There is controversy as to whether low levels of air pollution affect the symptoms and lung function in asthma. We addressed this by examining the short-term effects of winter air pollution on childhood asthma in Paris. We performed a 6 month follow-up of 84 medically diagnosed asthmatic children classified into two groups of severity. The outcomes included incidence and prevalence of asthma attacks, symptoms and use of supplementary beta2-agonists, peak expiratory flow (PEF) value and its variability. The statistical analysis controlled the lack of independence between daily health outcomes, trends and meteorology. Air pollution was associated with an increase in reports and duration of asthma attacks and asthma-like symptoms in mild asthmatic children. The strongest association was the risk of asthma attack for an increase of 50 microg x m(-3) of sulphur dioxide (SO2) on the same day (odds ratio (OR)=2.86). Maximum reduction in morning peak expiratory flow (PEF) (5%) and maximum increase in PEF variability (2%) were observed at a lag of 3 days for an increase of 50 microg x m(-3) of SO2 in the subgroup of mild asthmatics receiving no regular inhaled medication. In moderate asthmatic children, the duration of supplementary beta2-agonist use was strongly associated with air pollution. The general pattern of our results provides evidence of the effect of the low levels of air pollution encountered in Western Europe on symptoms and lung function in childhood asthma.

Maximum reduction in morning peak expiratory flow (PEF) (5%) and maximum increase in PEF variability (2%) were observed at a lag of 3 days for an increase of 50 microg x m(-3) of SO2 in the subgroup of mild asthmatics receiving no regular inhaled medication. In moderate asthmatic children, the duration of supplementary beta2-agonist use was strongly associated with air pollution. The general pattern of our results provides evidence of the effect of the low levels of air pollution encountered in Western Europe on symptoms and lung function in childhood asthma.

Abstract
One hundred and seventy nine women of discharge vaginal were studied. Endocervical and exocervical samples were obtained. The vaginal fluids samples were processed by the following tests: pH, fishy odor, clue cells observation was done by Gram reaction. Gardnerella vaginalis was identified through biochemical tests. G. vaginalis (23.4%), C. albicans (21.8%), T. vaginalis (14.5%), N. gonorrhoeae (5.5%) and C. trachomatis (11.7%), were found in 42 women. A 7.1% of forms compatible with Mobiluncus spp. were observed by direct Gram. The relation between isolation of G. vaginalis and the presence of clue cells was 95.2%. There was a sensitivity of 95.2%, 100% specificity and a predictive positive value of 100%.

Abstract
The allelic segregation of 13 isozyme loci in hand-fertilized heterozygous cherimoya trees (Annona cherimola Mill.) has been studied. We analyzed 63 locus x progeny combinations and found non-Mendelian segregation in 12 cases. The sequential Bonferroni method revealed only eight cases of non-Mendelian segregation; these have been investigated with several chi-square tests to discover what processes were involved. Gametic selection appears to be the main contributor, although zygotic selection seems also to play a part.
