Intracranial complications of sinogenic and otogenic infections in children: an ESPN survey on their occurrence in the pre-COVID and post-COVID era

BACKGROUND

COVID-19 pandemic is thought to have changed the epidemiology of some pediatric neurosurgical disease: among them are the intracranial complications of sinusitis and otitis (ICSO). According to some studies on a limited number of cases, both streptococci-related sinusitis and ICSO would have increased immediately after the pandemic, although the reason is not clear yet (seasonal changes versus pandemic-related effects). The goal of the present survey of the European Society for Pediatric Neurosurgery (ESPN) was to collect a large number of cases from different European countries encompassing the pre-COVID (2017-2019), COVID (2020-2021), and post-COVID period (2022-June 2023) looking for possible epidemiological and/or clinical changes.

MATERIAL AND METHODS

An English language questionnaire was sent to ESPN members about year of the event, patient's age and gender, presence of immune-deficit or other favoring risk factors, COVID infection, signs and symptoms at onset, site of primary infection, type of intracranial complication, identified germ, type and number of surgical operations, type and duration of medical treatment, clinical and radiological outcome, duration of the follow-up.

RESULTS

Two hundred fifty-four cases were collected by 30 centers coming from 14 different European countries. There was a statistically significant difference between the post-COVID period (129 children, 86 cases/year, 50.7% of the whole series) and the COVID (40 children, 20 cases/year, 15.7%) or the pre-COVID period (85 children, 28.3 cases/year, 33.5%). Other significant differences concerned the presence of predisposing factors/concurrent diseases (higher in the pre-COVID period) and previous COVID infection (higher in the post-COVID period). No relevant differences occurred as far as demographic, microbiological, clinical, radiological, outcome, morbidity, and mortality data were concerned. Paranasal sinuses and middle ear/mastoid were the most involved primary site of infection (71% and 27%, respectively), while extradural or subdural empyema and brain abscess were the most common ICSO (73% and 17%, respectively). Surgery was required in 95% of cases (neurosurgical and ENT procedure in 71% and 62% of cases, respectively) while antibiotics in 99% of cases. After a 12.4-month follow-up, a full clinical and radiological recovery was obtained in 85% and 84% of cases, respectively. The mortality rate was 2.7%.

CONCLUSIONS

These results suggest that the occurrence of ICSO was significantly increased after the pandemic. Such an increase seems to be related to the indirect effects of the pandemic (e.g., immunity debt) rather than to a direct effect of COVID infection or to seasonal fluctuations. ICSO remain challenging diseases but the pandemic did not affect the management strategies nor their prognosis. The epidemiological change of sinusitis/otitis and ICSO should alert about the appropriate follow-up of children with sinusitis/otitis.

Proliferation and Apoptosis of Cat (Felis catus) Male Germ Cells during Breeding and Non-Breeding Seasons

Simple Summary

Spermatogenesis is a complex process through which male gametes, spermatozoa, are produced starting from stem germ cells called spermatogonia. The existing information on cat spermatogenesis is limited and somewhat contradictory. In fact, although this species is considered a long-day breeder with a reproduction period starting when the day length increases and ending in late autumn, spermatogenesis and sperm production occur throughout the year. In order to assess whether cat spermatogenesis is modulated according to a season pattern, we analyzed testes taken from feral cats orchiectomized during reproductive (February–July) and non-reproductive (November and December) periods. The results of the analyses carried out in the present study showed that spermatogonial proliferation was more intense during the reproductive period and germ cell death via apoptosis (a programmed form of cell death) increased during the non-reproductive period. Our results confirm the hypothesis that cat spermatogenesis is seasonally modulated through changes of germ cell proliferation and apoptosis, according to a common paradigm of seasonally breeding species.

Abstract

The domestic cat (Felis catus) is a seasonal-breeding species whose reproductive period starts when the day length increases. Since the existing information on cat spermatogenesis is limited and somewhat contradictory, in the present study, germ cell proliferation and apoptosis in feral adult tomcats orchiectomized during reproductive (reproductive group, RG; February–July) and non-reproductive (non-reproductive group, NRG; November and December) seasons were compared. Cross-sections taken from the middle third of the left testis were chemically fixed and embedded in paraffin wax. Histological sections were processed for the immunohistochemical detection of proliferating germ cells (PCNA) and for the identification of apoptotic cells (TUNEL method). The percentage of PCNA-positive spermatogonia was higher in the RG than in the NRG. On the contrary, germ cell apoptosis was higher in the NRG than in the RG. Our results confirm that cat spermatogenesis is modulated on a seasonal basis and suggests that spermatogenesis control involves changes in germ cell proliferation and apoptosis according to a common paradigm of seasonally breeding species.

Respiratory and hemodynamic effects of 2 protocols of low-dose infusion of dexmedetomidine in dogs under isoflurane anesthesia

The aim of this study was to evaluate the respiratory and hemodynamic effects of a low-dose dexmedetomidine infusion [1 μg/kg body weight (BW) per hour], with or without a loading dose (1 μg/kg BW), in dogs under isoflurane anesthesia. Thirty dogs were premedicated with methadone [0.3 mg/kg BW intramuscular (IM)], induced with propofol intravenous (IV) and maintained with isoflurane (1.3% to 1.4%) under mechanical ventilation. Animals were randomly assigned to 3 intravenous (IV) treatments (n = 10): 1 μg/kg BW dexmedetomidine, followed by 1 μg/kg BW per hour (group BI); or saline solution bolus, followed by either an infusion of 1 μg/kg BW per hour dexmedetomidine (group I) or saline solution (group C). The infusions were interrupted after 30 minutes. Respiratory system static compliance (Cstat) and respiratory system resistance (Rrs), partial pressure of oxygen/fractional inspired oxygen ratio (PaO₂/FIO₂), intrapulmonary shunt (Fshunt), and cardiac output (CO) were determined 5 minutes before the bolus (BASELINE), at the end of the bolus (BOLUS), and at 15 (T15), 30 (T30), and 45 minutes (T45) intervals. In group BI, Cstat and PaO₂/FiO₂ were higher at T15 and T30 than at BASELINE in the same group and than group C at the same times. In group I, the same parameters at T30 were higher than at BASELINE and than group C at the same time. In group BI, Rrs and Fshunt were lower than at BASELINE and than group C at the same time. In group I, the same parameters at T30 were lower than at BASELINE and those of group C at the same time. Cardiac output (CO) at T30 was higher in groups BI and I than in group C. The results of this study showed that low-dose dexmedetomidine infusion improves oxygenation and respiratory system mechanics and has a stabilizing hemodynamic effect in dogs anesthetized with isoflurane and mechanically ventilated.

Vitellogenin receptor and fatty acid profiles of individual lipid classes of oocytes from wild and captive-reared greater amberjack (Seriola dumerili) during the reproductive cycle

The greater amberjack Seriola dumerili (Risso, 1810) is a large migratory pelagic fish occurring in tropical and temperate waters with a great potential for the world aquaculture industry. Previous studies showed that wild-caught female greater amberjack reared in sea cages and handled during the reproductive season, underwent extensive ovarian atresia. This atresia, however, was not related to an insufficient liver transcription or oocyte uptake of vitellogenin (Vtg). In the present study, the structure of two greater amberjack vitellogenin receptors, namely Vtgr (Lr8-) and Lrp13, was characterized. Moreover, vtgr and lrp13 gene expression and the fatty acid profiles of specific phospholipids and neutral lipids were compared in the ovaries of wild and captive-reared greater amberjack during different phases of the reproductive cycle (i.e. early gametogenesis, advanced gametogenesis and spawning). Ovarian vtgr and lrp13 transcription was more active during early gametogenesis, suggesting that vitellogenin receptor transcripts were synthesized by previtellogenic oocytes and remained in the cellular mRNA pool until oocytes resumed meiosis and entered into secondary growth (i.e. vitellogenesis). Rearing of wild-caught greater amberjack in captivity together with handling during the reproductive season was associated with a reduced vtgr and lrp13 transcription and with a diminished capacity of oocytes in the early phase of gametogenesis (primary oocyte growth) to enter into vitellogenesis. During early gametogenesis, remarkable differences in the fatty acid composition were observed between wild and captive-reared individuals: all phospholipids of captive fish displayed dramatic increases of saturates (16:0 and 18:0) and decreases of arachidonic acid (ARA) and docosahexaenoic acid (DHA). The present study confirms the susceptibility of greater amberjack reproductive function to handling stress and suggests that the consequent extensive atresia of vitellogenic follicles originated during the primary oocytes growth when the capacity of oocytes to synthesize vitellogenin receptors was reduced. The study also suggests that this reduced capacity was associated with an altered oocyte phospholipid fatty acid composition during early gametogenesis.

Proposed standard model and consistent terminology for monitoring and outcome evaluation in different dietetic care settings: Results from the EU-sponsored IMPECD project

BACKGROUND & AIMS

Dietetic interventions contribute to certain health objectives and other outcomes, but are mostly part of a multimodal and multidisciplinary approach what makes evaluating the actual effects of dietitians' involvement rather complex. Although monitoring and outcome evaluation (M&OE) can provide routine data to prove the effectiveness of dietetic interventions, this has not been established yet in different dietetic settings.

METHODS

A comprehensive framework for M&OE in dietetics was developed by dietetic experts from five European higher education institutes for dietetics in the course of the EU sponsored project "Improvement of Education and Competences in Dietetics (IMPECD)".

RESULTS

Firstly, clear definitions on M&OE are proposed to facilitate the use of consistent terminology, with a specific emphasis on the term "impact" covering macro-level outcomes such as cost-effectiveness. Secondly, the Dietetic Care Process (DCP) was merged into a logic model to demonstrate the position of M&OE in relation to intervention planning and implementation, in both group and individual settings. Thirdly, selecting the appropriate indicators is indispensable to monitor and evaluate outcomes, and requires a high level of dietitians' critical reasoning. A categorized overview of indicators is provided to support this process. Lastly, the consortium developed a checklist to give dietitians a handle on what elements could be included in their M&OE plan and trigger them to perform M&OE in practice.

CONCLUSIONS

Innovative M&OE models may help dietitians to demonstrate their effectiveness in improving clinical outcomes and justify their role in health care.

Cytotoxic and trypanocidal activities of cinchona alkaloid derivatives

A series of 27 cinchona alkaloid derivatives (1f-w, 2a-e and 3a-d) were investigated for their cytotoxic and trypanocidal activities using seven different cancer cell lines (KB, HeLa, MCF-7, A-549, Hep-G2, U-87 and HL-60), two normal cell lines (HDF and CHO) and bloodstream forms of Trypanosoma brucei brucei, respectively. Four compounds (1u, 1w, 2e and 3d) were identified with promising cytotoxic activity with 50% growth inhibition (GI₅₀ ) values below 10 μM. Two (2e and 3d) of the four compounds also exhibited potent anti-trypanosomal activity with GI₅₀ values of 0.3-0.4 μM. All four active compounds represented derivatives modified at their C-9 hydroxy group. With respect to anti-proliferative activity and selectivity, 2e (epi-N-quinidyl-N'-bis(3,5-trifluoromethyl)phenylthiourea) proved to be the most promising derivative for both cancer cells and bloodstream forms of T. b. brucei. The cytotoxic activity of compounds 1u, 1w, 2e and 3d was attributed to their ability to induce apoptosis in cancer cells. The results demonstrate the potential of cinchona alkaloid derivatives as novel anti-cancer and anti-trypanosome drug candidates.

Effects of the supplementation with an high-polyphenols extra-virgin olive oil on kinetic sperm features and seminal plasma oxidative status in healthy dogs

The aim of this work was to evaluate the effects of the supplementation of two extra-virgin olive oils (EVOO) having different polyphenols content, on canine spermatozoa kinetic parameters and seminal plasma oxidative status. The study was conducted on 12 clinically healthy dogs of different breeds (2-7 years, 5-48 kg of body weight) divided into two groups: an experimental group supplemented with EVOO (Coratina cultivar) high in polyphenols (H-P) and a control group fed EVOO (Cima di Bitonto cultivar) low in polyphenols (L-P). The oil was daily administered per os (1 ml/3 kg BW) before meal. Semen collection was made twice at 15 days distance (D0₁ and D0₂ ) and then at 30 (D30), 60 (D60) and 90 (D90) days. Semen concentration and kinetic parameters were measured using computer-assisted sperm analysis (CASA) system to evaluate: sperm total count, sperm motile (MOT%), progressive motility (PROGR%) and its fractions, straight-line velocity (VSL, μm/s), curvilinear velocity (VCL, μm/s), average path velocity (VAP, μm/s), amplitude of lateral head displacement (ALH, μm), beat cross frequency (BCF, Hz), straightness (STR%) and linearity (LIN%). On seminal plasma, reactive oxygen species (ROS) and biological antioxidant potential (BAP) were tested. From findings, no differences were found for sperm MOT, VSL, VCL, VAP, ALH, BCF, STR, LIN and BAP. A gradual enhancement of PROGR% was observed in H-P group (p < .01). The ROS levels were higher in dogs H-P compared to the other group (p < .05). In conclusion, our results highlight the positive effects of EVOO polyphenols on sperm PROGR% in healthy dogs.

Cranial ultrasound is a reliable first step imaging in children with suspected craniosynostosis

PURPOSE

Skull radiography (SR) and Computed Tomography (CT) are still proposed as the first-line imaging choice for the diagnosis of craniosynostosis (CS) in children with abnormal head shape, but both techniques expose infants to ionizing radiation. Several studies shown that ultrasound may play an important role in the diagnosis of craniosynostosis. The aim of our study is to assess the diagnostic accuracy of cranial ultrasound scan (CUS) and confirm if it is a reliable first step imaging evaluation for the diagnosis of craniosynostosis in newborn.

METHOD

A cohort of 196 infants (122/74 males/females), with a mean age of 4 months, clinically suspected to have abnormal closure of cranial sutures, were firstly examined by CUS and then referred to neuroradiologists to perform volumetric CT scan if the suspicion of stenosis was ecographically confirmed; otherwise, a routine follow-up and physical treatment was performed, to observe the evolution of the head shape.

RESULTS

Of the 196 children studied by CUS, only two had inconclusive studies due to age limitation (>12 months). Thirty children were diagnosed with cranial synostosis at CUS and verified by CT; all the CUS results were confirmed, except two cases, that were revealed as false positives in the starting phase of the study. Twelve patients with very prominent head deformity and negative CUS underwent CT, which confirmed the CUS results in all of them; one case of closure of both temporal sutures, not studied by CUS, was documented by CT. All the 148 children with poor clinical suspicion and negative CUS underwent just a prolonged clinical follow-up. In all of them, a progressive normalization of head shape was observed, and the craniosynostosis was excluded on a clinical base.

CONCLUSIONS

CUS is a highly specific and sensitive imaging technique. In referral centers, expert hands can use it as a reliable first-step screening for infants younger than 1 year, suspected to have a craniosynostosis, thus avoiding unnecessary exposure to ionizing radiation. The "golden age" to obtain the best CUS results is under 6 months of life. Because the method is operator-dependent and there is a learning curve, a case centralization is advisable.

Improved nutrition in adolescents and young adults after childhood cancer - INAYA study

BACKGROUND

Multimodality treatment improves the chance of survival but increases the risk for long-term side effects in young cancer survivors, so-called" Adolescents and Young Adults"(AYAs). Compared to the general population AYAs have a 5 to 15-fold increased risk of cardiovascular morbidity. Thus, improving modifiable lifestyle risk factors is of particular importance.

METHODS

The INAYA trial included AYAs between 18 and 39 years receiving an intensified individual nutrition counseling at four time points in a 3-month period based on a 3-day dietary record. At week 0 and 12 AYAs got a face-to-face counseling, at week 2 and 6 by telephone. Primary endpoint was change in nutritional behavior measured by Healthy Eating Index - European Prospective Investigation into Cancer and Nutrition (HEI-EPIC).

RESULTS

Twenty-three AYAs (11 female, 12 male, median age 20 years (range 19-23 years), median BMI: 21.4 kg/m2 (range: 19.7-23.9 kg/m2) after completion of cancer treatment for sarcoma (n = 2), carcinoma (n = 2), blastoma (n = 1), hodgkin lymphoma (n = 12), or leukemia (n = 6) were included (median time between diagnosis and study inclusion was 44 month). The primary endpoint was met, with an improvement of 20 points in HEI-EPIC score in 52.2 % (n = 12) of AYAs. At baseline, median HEI-EPIC score was 47.0 points (range from 40.0 to 55.0 points) and a good, moderate and bad nutritional intake was seen in 4.3, 73.9 and 21.7 % of AYAs. At week 12, median HEI-EPIC improved significantly to 65.0 points (range from 55.0 to 76.0 points) (p ≤ 0.001) and a good, moderate and bad nutritional intake was seen in 47.8, 52.2 and 0 % of AYAs. No change was seen in quality of life, waist-hip ratio and blood pressure.

CONCLUSION

Intensified nutrition counseling is feasible and seem to improve nutritional behavior of AYAs. Further studies will be required to demonstrate long-term sustainability and confirm the results in a randomized design in larger cohorts.

ESPEN guidelines on definitions and terminology of clinical nutrition

BACKGROUND

A lack of agreement on definitions and terminology used for nutrition-related concepts and procedures limits the development of clinical nutrition practice and research.

OBJECTIVE

This initiative aimed to reach a consensus for terminology for core nutritional concepts and procedures.

METHODS

The European Society of Clinical Nutrition and Metabolism (ESPEN) appointed a consensus group of clinical scientists to perform a modified Delphi process that encompassed e-mail communication, face-to-face meetings, in-group ballots and an electronic ESPEN membership Delphi round.

RESULTS

Five key areas related to clinical nutrition were identified: concepts; procedures; organisation; delivery; and products. One core concept of clinical nutrition is malnutrition/undernutrition, which includes disease-related malnutrition (DRM) with (eq. cachexia) and without inflammation, and malnutrition/undernutrition without disease, e.g. hunger-related malnutrition. Over-nutrition (overweight and obesity) is another core concept. Sarcopenia and frailty were agreed to be separate conditions often associated with malnutrition. Examples of nutritional procedures identified include screening for subjects at nutritional risk followed by a complete nutritional assessment. Hospital and care facility catering are the basic organizational forms for providing nutrition. Oral nutritional supplementation is the preferred way of nutrition therapy but if inadequate then other forms of medical nutrition therapy, i.e. enteral tube feeding and parenteral (intravenous) nutrition, becomes the major way of nutrient delivery.

CONCLUSION

An agreement of basic nutritional terminology to be used in clinical practice, research, and the ESPEN guideline developments has been established. This terminology consensus may help to support future global consensus efforts and updates of classification systems such as the International Classification of Disease (ICD). The continuous growth of knowledge in all areas addressed in this statement will provide the foundation for future revisions.

Environmental nanoparticles are significantly over-expressed in acute myeloid leukemia

The increase in the incidence of acute myeloid leukemia (AML) may suggest a possible environmental etiology. PM2.5 was declared by IARC a Class I carcinogen. No report has focused on particulate environmental pollution together with AML. The study investigated the presence and composition of particulate matter in blood with a Scanning Electron Microscope coupled with an Energy Dispersive Spectroscope, a sensor capable of identifying the composition of foreign bodies. 38 peripheral blood samples, 19 AML cases and 19 healthy controls, were analyzed. A significant overload of particulate matter-derived nanoparticles linked or aggregated to blood components was found in AML patients, while almost absent in matched healthy controls. Two-tailed Student's t-test, MANOVA and Principal Component Analysis indicated that the total numbers of aggregates and particles were statistically different between cases and controls (MANOVA, P<0.001 and P=0.009 respectively). The particles detected showed to contain highly-reactive, non-biocompatible and non-biodegradable metals; in particular, micro- and nano-sized particles grouped in organic/inorganic clusters, with statistically higher frequency of a subgroup of elements in AML samples. The demonstration, for the first time, of an overload of nanoparticles linked to blood components in AML patients could be the basis for a possible, novel pathogenetic mechanism for AML development.

Microorganism Nutrition Processes as a General Route for the Preparation of Bionic Nanocomposites Based on Intractable Polymers

In this paper the fermentation process activated by living microorganisms of the baker's yeast is proposed as a facile assembly method of hybrid nanoparticles at liquid interface. Water dispersion of commercial baker's yeast extract used for bread production, graphene nanoplatelets (GNPs), and carbon nanotubes (CNTs) were added to oil/water interface; when the yeast is activated by adding sugar, the byproduct carbon dioxide bubbles migrate from the water phase to the oil/water interface generating a floating nanostructured film at liquid interface where it is trapped. Starting from this simple method, we propose a general approach for the stabilization of intractable poly(etheretherketone) polymeric particles with GNPs and CNTs at immiscible liquid interface. This process allowed the formation of sintered porous composites with improved mechanical properties. The porous structure of the composites gave rise to a low thermal conductivity making them good candidates for thermal insulating applications. Liquid absorption by these porous composites has been also reported. We believe that this new approach may have applications in the large scale fabrication of nanomaterials and is particularly suited for the preparation of nanocomposites starting from polymers that are intractable by solvent casting.

Graphene-Based Bionic Composites with Multifunctional and Repairing Properties

In this work, a novel bionic composite inspired by the concept of yeast fermentation has been proposed. It was observed that the addition of graphene nanoplatelets during the fermentation of extract of Saccharomyces cerevisiae fungi allows coupling of the graphene sheets to the yeast cell wall. This process resulted in the formation of a composite film with improved mechanical and electrical properties along with the capability of converting the light stimulus in the electrical signal. The mechanical properties of the prepared composites, namely, the fracture strength and Young's modulus, were studied via numerical simulations and are related to the properties of the constituent phases via rules of mixture. Finally, it was observed that graphene nanoplatelets, added to the nutrient broth, were able to reassemble onto the stressed cell surface and repair the surface cracking, partially restoring the pristine electrical and mechanical properties. The method reported here may find potential application in the development of self-healable bioelectronic devices and microorganism-based strain and chemical biosensors.

The role of hysteroscopy in unexplained infertility

PURPOSE OF INVESTIGATION

To evaluate pregnancy rate after diagnostic and operative hysteroscopy in nulliparous patients with inter- tility of unknown cause.

MATERIALS AND METHODS

The authors conducted this study on 92 nulliparous patients with unexplained infer- tility that underwent diagnostic hysteroscopy which showed an uterine lesion (submucous fibroids, uterine septa, polyps, synechias) and underwent operative hysteroscopy to remove the lesion between 2007 and 2011. Patients' data were retrospectively extrapolated from patient's charts, then the patients were called to ask if they had pregnancies after hysteroscopic surgery.

RESULTS

The present study showed a significant increase in pregnancy rate after hysteroscopic surgery (85% during the two years after the surgery). The most common endocavitary lesions were endometrial polyps (21%), uterine septa (25%), and submucous myomas (18%).

CONCLUSIONS

Ac- cording to the present data, hysteroscopic evaluation of nulliparous women with unexplained infertility could be useful to detect lesions not diagnosed with other tests, and the treatment of these endocavitary lesions plays an important role in the diagnostic and therapeutic iter. The results show-a pregnancy rate of 85% in the patients treated for endocavitary lesions, but 15% of the patients, despite a normal uterine cavity, continue to have unexplained infertility and are classified as idiopathic infertility.

Inverse relationship between body mass index and mortality in older nursing home residents: a meta-analysis of 19,538 elderly subjects

Body mass index (BMI) and mortality in old adults from the general population have been related in a U-shaped or J-shaped curve. However, limited information is available for elderly nursing home populations, particularly about specific cause of death. A systematic PubMed/EMBASE/CINAHL/SCOPUS search until 31 May 2014 without language restrictions was conducted. As no published study reported mortality in standard BMI groups (<18.5, 18.5-24.9, 25-29.9, ≥30 kg/m(2)), the most adjusted hazard ratios (HRs) according to a pre-defined list of covariates were obtained from authors and pooled by random-effect model across each BMI category. Out of 342 hits, 20 studies including 19,538 older nursing home residents with 5,223 deaths during a median of 2 years of follow-up were meta-analysed. Compared with normal weight, all-cause mortality HRs were 1.41 (95% CI = 1.26-1.58) for underweight, 0.85 (95% CI = 0.73-0.99) for overweight and 0.74 (95% CI = 0.57-0.96) for obesity. Underweight was a risk factor for higher mortality caused by infections (HR = 1.65 [95% CI = 1.13-2.40]). RR results corroborated primary HR results, with additionally lower infection-related mortality in overweight and obese than in normal-weight individuals. Like in the general population, underweight is a risk factor for mortality in old nursing home residents. However, uniquely, not only overweight but also obesity is protective, which has relevant nutritional goal implications in this population/setting.

Impact of diet and nutraceutical supplementation on inflammation in elderly people. Results from the RISTOMED study, an open-label randomized control trial

BACKGROUND & AIMS

Eating habits may influence the life span and the quality of ageing process by modulating inflammation. The RISTOMED project was developed to provide a personalized and balanced diet, enriched with or without nutraceutical compounds, to decrease and prevent inflammageing, oxidative stress and gut microbiota alteration in healthy elderly people. This paper focused on the effect on inflammation and metabolism markers after 56 days of RISTOMED diet alone or supplementation with three nutraceutical compounds.

METHODS

A cohort of 125 healthy elderly subjects was recruited and randomized into 4 arms (Arm A, RISTOMED diet; Arm B, RISTOMED diet plus VSL#3 probiotic blend; Arm C, RISTOMED diet plus AISA d-Limonene; Arm D, RISTOMED diet plus Argan oil). Inflammatory and metabolism parameters as well as the ratio between Clostridium cluster IV and Bifidobacteria (CL/B) were collected before and after 56 days of dietary intervention, and their evolution compared among the arms. Moreover, participants were subdivided according to their baseline inflammatory parameters (erythrocytes sedimentation rate (ESR), C-Reactive Protein, fibrinogen, Tumor Necrosis Factor-alfa (TNF-α), and Interleukin 6) in two clusters with low or medium-high level of inflammation. The evolution of the measured parameters was then examined separately in each cluster.

RESULTS

Overall, RISTOMED diet alone or with each nutraceutical supplementation significantly decreased ESR. RISTOMED diet supplemented with d-Limonene resulted in a decrease in fibrinogen, glucose, insulin levels and HOMA-IR. The most beneficial effects were observed in subjects with a medium-high inflammatory status who received RISTOMED diet with AISA d-Limonene supplementation. Moreover, RISTOMED diet associated with VSL#3 probiotic blend induced a decrease in the CL/B ratio.

CONCLUSIONS

Overall, this study emphasizes the beneficial anti-inflammageing effect of RISTOMED diet supplemented with nutraceuticals to control the inflammatory status of elderly individuals.

Ochratoxin A at low concentrations inhibits in vitro growth of canine umbilical cord matrix mesenchymal stem cells through oxidative chromatin and DNA damage

Ochratoxin A (OTA) exposure during pregnancy in laboratory animals induces delayed/abnormal embryo development. Foetal adnexa-derived mesenchymal stem cells (MSCs) could help evaluate the developmental risk of exposure to chemicals in advanced gestational age. We tested the effects of OTA at concentrations ranging from 2.5×10(-4) to 25nM on growth parameters of canine umbilical cord matrix (UCM)-derived MSCs. The hypothesis that oxidative chromatin and DNA damage could underlie OTA-mediated cell toxicity was also investigated. After in vitro exposure, OTA significantly decreased cell density and increased doubling time in a passage- and concentration-dependent manner and no exposed cells survived beyond passage 5. Significantly higher rates of cells showed condensed and fragmented chromatin and oxidized DNA, as assessed by OxyDNA assay. These findings showed that in vitro exposure to OTA, at picomolar levels, perturbs UCM-MSC growth parameters through oxidative chromatin and DNA damage, suggesting possible consequences on canine foetal development.

Characterization and in vitro differentiation potency of early-passage canine amnion- and umbilical cord-derived mesenchymal stem cells as related to gestational age

Fetal adnexa are a non-controversial source of mesenchymal stem cells (MSCs) that have high plasticity, a high proliferation rate, and the ability to differentiate towards multiple lineages. MSC populations have been characterized for their stemness and differentiation capabilities; more recent work has focused on MSC selection and on establishing predictable elements to discriminate the cells with the most potential for regenerative medicine. In this study, we cytogenetically and molecularly characterized and followed the in vitro proliferation and differentiation potential of early-passage canine amniotic membrane MSCs (AM-MSCs) and umbilical cord matrix MSCs (UCM-MSCs) isolated from fetuses at early (35-40 days) and late (45-55 days) gestational ages. We found that cells from both fetal gestational ages showed similar features. In all examined cell lines, the morphology of proliferating cells typically appeared fibroblast-like. Population doublings, passaged up to 10 times, increased significantly with passage number. In both cell types, cell viability and chromosomal number and structure were not affected by gestational age at early passages. Passage-3 AM- and UCM-MSCs from both gestational phases also expressed embryonic (POU5F1) and mesenchymal (CD29, CD44) stemness markers, whereas hematopoietic and histocompatibility markers were never found in any sample. Passage-3 cell populations of each cell type were also multipotential as they could differentiate into neurocytes and osteocytes, based on cell morphology, specific stains, and molecular analysis. These results indicated that MSCs retrieved from the UCM and AM in the early and late fetal phases of gestation could be used for canine regenerative medicine.

Molecular characterization and in vitro differentiation of feline progenitor-like amniotic epithelial cells

Introduction

While amniotic mesenchymal cells have been isolated and characterized in different species, amniotic epithelial cells (AECs) have been found only in humans and horses and are recently considered valid candidates in regenerative medicine. The aim of this work is to obtain and characterize, for the first time in the feline species, presumptive stem cells from the epithelial portion of the amnion (AECs) to be used for clinical applications.

Methods

In our study, we molecularly characterized and induced in vitro differentiation of feline AECs, obtained after enzymatic digestion of amnion.

Results

AECs displayed a polygonal morphology and the mean doubling time value was 1.94 ± 0.04 days demonstrating the high proliferating capacity of these cells. By RT-PCR, AECs expressed pluripotent (Oct4, Nanog) and some mesenchymal markers (CD166, CD44) suggesting that an epithelial-mesenchymal transition may occur in these cells that lack the hematopoietic marker CD34. Cells also showed the expression of embryonic marker SSEA-4, but not SSEA-3, as demonstrated by immunocytochemistry and flow cytometry. Moreover, the possibility to use feline AECs in cell therapies resides in their low immunogenicity, due to the absence of MHC-II antigen expression. After induction, AECs differentiated into the mesodermic and ectodermic lineages, demonstrating high plasticity.

Conclusions

In conclusion, feline AECs appear to be a readily obtainable, highly proliferative, multipotent and non-immunogenic cell line from a source that may represent a good model system for stem cell biology and be useful in allogenic cell-based therapies in order to treat tissue lesions, especially with loss of substance.

Increased intestinal permeability in malnourished patients with liver cirrhosis

BACKGROUND/OBJECTIVE

Malnutrition is a prominent feature in liver cirrhosis, with deleterious impact on clinical outcome. The objective of this study is to investigate whether malnutrition is associated with increased gastrointestinal permeability in liver cirrhosis reflected by altered urinary excretion of non-metabolizable sugar probes.

SUBJECTS/METHODS

Patients with advanced liver cirrhosis (Child Pugh Score B or C) were recruited. Nutritional status was determined according to the Subjective Global Assessment. Intestinal permeability was assessed by measuring the urinary excretion of orally administered, non-metabolized sugar probe molecules. The lactulose/mannitol ratio served as marker for intestinal permeability and reflects non-carrier-mediated transcellular and paracellular transport of the small intestine during the first 5 h. Sucrose recovery in urine within the first 5 h reflects gastroduodenal permeability; sucralose recovery in urine 5-26 h after consumption reflects colonic permeability.

RESULTS

Sixty-four patients (56.7±10.8 years; 33% female) were included in the study. Twenty-one patients were considered well nourished according to the Subjective Global Assessment, 23 moderately nourished and 20 patients severely malnourished; 74% had alcoholic liver disease and 67% had cirrhosis stage Child C. Gastroduodenal and colonic permeability was significantly increased in patients with liver cirrhosis compared with 63 healthy controls (0.23±0.22 and 1.37±1.42% vs 0.14±0.10 and 0.41±0.72% in controls), but not different between well and malnourished subjects. Small intestinal permeability (lactulose/mannitol ratio) was increased in all patients (0.069±0.055%) and further increased in malnourished patients (0.048±0.031% vs 0.084±0.061%, P=0.004) due to decreased mannitol recovery only.

CONCLUSIONS

Gastric, small intestinal and even colonic permeability was altogether increased in liver cirrhosis, and malnutrition was associated with further increased small intestinal permeability indicative of villous atrophy.

Isolation, proliferation, cytogenetic, and molecular characterization and in vitro differentiation potency of canine stem cells from foetal adnexa: a comparative study of amniotic fluid, amnion, and umbilical cord matrix

The possibility to isolate canine mesenchymal stem cells (MSCs) from foetal adnexa is interesting since several canine genetic disorders are reported to resemble similar dysfunctions in humans. In this study, we successfully isolated, cytogenetically and molecularly characterized, and followed the differentiation potency of canine MSCs from foetal adnexa, such as amniotic fluid (AF), amniotic membrane (AM), and umbilical cord matrix (UCM). In the three types of cell lines, the morphology of proliferating cells typically appeared fibroblast-like, and the population doubling time (DT) significantly increased with passage number. For AF- and AM-MSCs, cell viability did not change with passages. In UCM-MSCs, cell viability remained at approximately constant levels up to P6 and significantly decreased from P7 (P < 0.05). Amnion and UCM-MSCs expressed embryonic and MSC markers, such as Oct-4 CD44, CD184, and CD29, whereas AF-MSCs expressed Oct-4, CD44. Expression of the hematopoietic markers CD34 and CD45 was not found. Dog leucocyte antigens (DLA-DRA1 and DLA-79) were expressed only in AF-MSCs at P1. Isolated cells of the three cell lines at P3 showed multipotent capacity, and differentiated in vitro into neurocyte, adipocyte, osteocyte, and chondrocyte, as demonstrated by specific stains and expression of molecular markers. Cells at P4 showed normal chromosomal number, structure, and telomerase activity. These results demonstrate that, in dog, MSCs can be successfully isolated from foetal adnexa and grown in vitro. Their proven stemness and chromosomal stability indicated that MSCs could be used as a model to study stem cell biology and have an application in therapeutic programs.

Functional expression of the extracellular calcium sensing receptor (CaSR) in equine umbilical cord matrix size-sieved stem cells

BACKGROUND

The present study investigates the effects of high external calcium concentration ([Ca(2+)](o)) and the calcimimetic NPS R-467, a known calcium-sensing receptor (CaSR) agonist, on growth/proliferation of two equine size-sieved umbilical cord matrix mesenchymal stem cell (eUCM-MSC) lines. The involvement of CaSR on observed cell response was analyzed at both the mRNA and protein level.

METHODOLOGY/PRINCIPAL FINDINGS

A large (>8 µm in diameter) and a small (<8 µm) cell line were cultured in medium containing: 1) low [Ca(2+)](o) (0.37 mM); 2) high [Ca(2+)](o) (2.87 mM); 3) NPS R-467 (3 µM) in presence of high [Ca(2+)](o) and 4) the CaSR antagonist NPS 2390 (10 µM for 30 min.) followed by incubation in presence of NPS R-467 in medium with high [Ca(2+)](o). Growth/proliferation rates were compared between groups. In large cells, the addition of NPS R-467 significantly increased cell growth whereas increasing [Ca(2+)](o) was not effective in this cell line. In small cells, both higher [Ca(2+)](o) and NPS R-467 increased cell growth. In both cell lines, preincubation with the CaSR antagonist NPS 2390 significantly inhibited the agonistic effect of NPS R-467. In both cell lines, increased [Ca(2+)](o) and/or NPS R-467 reduced doubling time values.Treatment with NPS R-467 down-regulated CaSR mRNA expression in both cell lines. In large cells, NPS R-467 reduced CaSR labeling in the cytosol and increased it at cortical level.

CONCLUSIONS/SIGNIFICANCE

In conclusion, calcium and the calcimimetic NPS R-467 reduce CaSR mRNA expression and stimulate cell growth/proliferation in eUCM-MSC. Their use as components of media for eUCM-MSC culture could be beneficial to obtain enough cells for down-stream purposes.

Annealing Studies of Visible Light Emission from Silicon Nanocrystals Produced by Implantation

The annealing behavior of silicon implanted SiO2 layers is studied using continuous and time-gated photoluminescence (PL). Two PL emission bands are observed. A band centered at 560 nm is present in as implanted samples and it is still observed after 1000 °C annealing. The emission time is fast (0.2 -2 ns). A second band centered at 780 nm further increases when hydrogen annealing was performed. The emission time is long (1 μs - 0.3 ms).

312 ISOLATION, PROLIFERATION, AND CHARACTERIZATION OF MESENCHYMAL STEM CELLS FROM AMNIOTIC FLUID, AMNION, AND UMBILICAL CORD MATRIX IN THE DOG

Mesenchymal stem cells (MSC) are defined as multipotent stem cells that can differentiate into various cell types in vivo and in vitro under controlled conditions. These cells express specific markers detectable by analysis at the mRNA or protein level. Important sources of MSC could be fetal adnexa, such as amniotic fluid (AF), amnion (AM), and umbilical cord matrix (UCM). Canine MSC should be of use for cell-based therapies and tissue engineering improving treatment of several diseases. Moreover, the dog has been considered an attractive animal model to study human diseases. In the present study, we successfully isolated and molecularly characterised AF-MSC, AM-MSC, and UCM-MSC from dogs. Chromosomal stability and telomerase activity were also investigated. Samples were recovered after elective ovariohysterectomy in 3 bitches 25 to 40 days of gestational age. After isolation, cells were maintained in culture (Bossolasco et al. 2006 Cell Res. 16, 329–336) for different passages to perform growth and doubling time (DT) studies. Expression analyses of embryonic (Oct-4, Nanog), mesenchymal (CD44, CD184, CD29), and haematopoietic (CD34, CD45) markers were carried out by RT-PCR. Karyotype analysis was performed by Q banding. Telomerase activity was analysed by TRAPeze Telomerase Detection Kit. In all 3 cell types, the morphology of proliferating cells appeared typically fibroblast-like. In the growth study, cells isolated from AF and AM were cultured until P3, and cells isolated from UCM were maintained until P7. The population DT in AF-MSC was significantly increased (Student’s t-test: P < 0.05) when comparing P1 v. P4. In AM-MSC, DT increased significantly in P1 v. P2 (P < 0.001), and in UCM-MSC, DT significantly increased in P1 v. P4 (P < 0.001). In AF-MSC, cell viability did not change with passages. In AM-MSC, cell viability significantly decreased (P < 0.001) between P1 and P4. In UCM-MSC, cell viability remained at approximately constant levels up to P6 and significantly decreased at P7 (P < 0.001). Amnion and UCM-MSC expressed Oct-4 and CD44, CD184, and CD29, whereas AF-MSC expressed only Oct-4 and CD44. Nanog, CD34, and CD45 were never found to be expressed in any cell line at any passage. In all cell lines, analysed metaphases at P4 showed normal chromosomal number and structure. Telomerase activity was observed in UCM-MSC, whereas tests on AF and AM-MSC are still on going. We first reported data on isolation, in vitro culture, and characterisation of MSC from AM and UCM in the dog. Cells expressed embryonic and MSC markers beginning at P1 and showed normal karyotype. 307 INVOLVEMENT OF THE CALCIUM SENSING RECEPTOR IN GROWTH AND PROLIFERATION OF STEM CELLS FROM EQUINE UMBILICAL CORD MATRIX

The calcium sensing receptor (CaSR) plays a key role in cells involved in calcium (Ca2+) homeostasis by directly sensing changes in extracellular Ca2+ concentration ([Ca2+]o), and external Ca2+ is a potent mediator of cell proliferation. The present study investigated the effects of high [Ca2+]o and of the CaSR agonist NPS R-467 on growth and proliferation of equine size-sieved umbilical cord matrix mesenchymal stem cells (UCM-MSC). The involvement of CaSR on observed cell response was analysed at the mRNA and protein level. Two subpopulations of UCM-MSC, isolated using multi-dishes with transwell inserts of 8-μm pores and expressing MSC markers (CD105, CD44, CD29; Corradetti et al. 2010 Reprod. Fertil. Dev. 22, 347–348), were analysed. Cells were cultured in medium containing: (A) low [Ca2+]o (0.37 mM), (B) high [Ca2+]o (2.87 mM), (C) NPS R-467 (3 μm) in the presence of high [Ca2+]o, and (D) the CaSR antagonist NPS 2390 (10 μm for 30′) followed by NPS R-467 in the presence of high [Ca2+]o. Growth and proliferation rates were compared among treatments (Student’s t-test). The CaSR expression and subcellular localization were investigated by real-time quantitative RT-PCR, immunofluorescence, and confocal microscopy. In the >8-μm cell line, the addition of NPS R-467, in the presence of [Ca2+]o, significantly increased cell growth after day 7 of culture (C v. A and B; P < 0.001). Increasing [Ca2+]o was not effective in this cell line (B v. A; not significant). In the <8-μm cell line, NPS R-467 increased cell growth, even at a lower extent (C v. A; P < 0.05), as observed on day 9 of culture. In this cell line, an increased proliferation rate was observed upon [Ca2+]o increase (B v. A; P < 0.05). In both cell lines, preincubation with NPS 2390 significantly inhibited the agonistic effect of NPS R-467. In both cell lines, a stimulatory effect of additional calcium and NPS R-467 on cell proliferation, in terms of reduced DT values, was observed. In the 2 cell lines, CaSR expression was down-regulated in the presence of high calcium and in NPS R-467-treated cells compared with controls (B and C v. A cells; P < 0.001). Treatment with high calcium or NPS R-467 reduced CaSR labelling in the cytosol and increased it at the cortical level. We found that CaSR is expressed at mRNA and protein levels in equine UCM-MSC, and it is functionally active because the selective CaSR agonist NPS R-467 induced a stimulatory effect on cell growth and proliferation, which was reversed by the CaSR antagonist NPS 2390. The different responses to treatments between the 2 UCM-MSC subpopulations suggest that CaSR could be differentially activated in these cell lines. The calcimimetic NPS R-467 might be useful as an adjunctive component of media for UCM-MSC culture to obtain enough cells for down-stream purposes. [Protein catabolism and malnutrition in liver cirrhosis - impact of oral nutritional therapy]

Malnutrition with loss of muscle is common in patients with liver cirrhosis and has negative impact on morbidity and mortality. The aetiology of malnutrition is multifactorial and includes inflammation, early onset of gluconeogenesis due to impaired glycogen storage and sometimes hypermetabolism. Reduced nutritional intake, however, plays the most important role in the pathogenesis of malnutrition. There is, however, ample evidence that nutritional intake and therapy are inadequate in liver cirrhosis although studies have clearly shown that dietary counselling and nutritional therapy with oral supplements improve intake in these patients. Protein requirement is considered to be increased in liver cirrhosis and high protein intake has been shown to be well tolerated and associated with an improvement of liver function and nutritional status. Protein intolerance on the other hand is uncommon and hepatic encephalopathy can thus rarely be attributed to high protein consumption. Recommendations for general protein restriction must therefore be considered obsolete and rather a risk factor for an impaired clinical outcome. Furthermore, the administration of late evening meals is highly beneficial in patients with liver disease since the rapid onset of the overnight catabolic state is counteracted. The serum concentration of branched-chain amino acids (BCAA) is decreased in patients with liver cirrhosis and long-term supplementation of BCAA has been shown to improve nutritional status and prolong event-free survival and quality of life.

Expression of the mu opioid receptor and effects of the opioid antagonist naloxone on in vitro maturation of oocytes recovered from anoestrous bitches

The mu-opioid receptor (MOR) is expressed in bovine, human, equine and canine oocytes, and in seasonal breeders, it is expressed with higher intensity during the anoestrous phase. Supplementation of in vitro maturation (IVM) medium with opioid agents, agonists or antagonists, was shown to affect oocyte maturation in several species such as rat, bovine and equine. This study reports the effects of supplementing IVM medium with naloxone (Nx), an opioid antagonist, on nuclear and cytoplasmic maturation rate of oocytes recovered from anoestrous bitches. Cytoplasmic maturation was examined in terms of mitochondrial (mt) distribution. In order to confirm the receptor-mediated action of Nx, in oocytes of anoestrous bitches, MOR expression was analyzed by Western blot. Cumulus-oocyte complexes, recovered from the ovaries of bitches in anoestrous, were cultured in vitro and Nx was added at the concentrations of 1 x 10(-6), 1 x 10(-8) and 1 x 10(-10) M. The rate of oocytes resuming meiosis after culture in presence of 1 x 10(-6) M Nx (29%) was significantly higher than that of oocytes of control group (12%; p < 0.05). However, treatment with Nx did not affect mt distribution pattern. In denuded oocytes and in corresponding cumulus cells, a doublet of 65 and 50 kDa was observed. We conclude that, in oocytes of anoestrous bitches, MOR is expressed and Nx significantly improves nuclear maturation rate. Further studies should be performed to elucidate the expression of other opioid receptors, such as delta and kappa, and possible interactive effects of their antagonists on canine oocyte maturation.

Lectin-binding sites on ejaculated stallion sperm during breeding and non-breeding periods

Stallion sperm from semen collected in Southern Italy during the breeding (June-July) and non-breeding (December-January) periods were analyzed by means of twelve lectins to evaluate the glycoconjugate pattern and to verify whether there are any seasonal differences in the glycosylation pattern of the sperm glycocalyx. The acrosomal cap showed reactivity for Maackia amurensis (MAL II), Sambucus nigra (SNA), Arachis hypogaea (PNA), Glycine max (SBA), Helix pomatia (HPA), Canavalia ensiformis (Con A) Triticum vulgaris (WGA), and Griffonia simplicifolia isolectin II (GSA II) in breeding and non-breeding ejaculated sperm, suggesting the presence of oligosaccharides terminating with Neu5Ac alpha 2,3Gal beta 1,4GlcNAc, Neu5Ac alpha 2,6Gal/GalNAc, with Gal beta 1,3GalNAc, alpha/beta GalNAc and glycans with terminal/internal alpha Man and GlcNAc. During the non-breeding period, the acrosomal cap expressed oligosaccharides terminating with Gal beta 1,4GlcNAc (Ricinus communis(120) affinity) (RCA(120)) and L-Fuc alpha 1,2Gal beta 1,4GlcNAc beta (Ulex europaeus affinity) (UEA I). The equatorial segment placed between the acrosomal cap and post-acrosomal region did not display glycans terminating with GalNAc, GlcNAc, and alpha L-Fuc. The post-acrosomal region of sperm collected in the breeding and non-breeding periods bound Con A, MAL II, SNA, and SBA, thus showing the presence of N-linked oligosaccharides from high-Man content, terminating with Neu5Ac alpha 2,3Gal beta 1,4GlcNAc, Neu5Ac alpha 2,6Gal/GalNAc and GalNAc. In winter, the post-acrosomal region also expressed oligosaccharides terminating with alpha GalNAc, GlcNAc, and L-Fuc alpha 1,2Gal beta 1,4GlcNAc beta (HPA, GSA II, and UEA I staining). The tail of sperm from semen collected during the breeding and non-breeding periods showed a lectin binding pattern similar to the post-acrosomal region, except for the absence of HPA staining in sperm collected during the winter season. These results indicate that the surface of stallion sperm contains different glycocalyx domains and that the glycosylation pattern undergoes changes during the breeding and non-breeding periods.

Mitochondrial distribution patterns in canine oocytes as related to the reproductive cycle stage

This study investigates the mitochondrial (mt) distribution in canine ovarian oocytes examined at recovery time, as related to the reproductive cycle stage, and in oviductal oocytes. Ovarian Germinal Vesicle (GV) stage oocytes were recovered from bitches in anestrous (A, n=2), follicular phase (F, n=4), ovulation (O, n=2), early luteal (EL, n=7) and mid/late luteal phase (MLL, n=2). Oviductal GV, metaphase I (MI) or MII stage oocytes were recovered from six bitches between 56 and 110 h after ovulation. Mitochondria were revealed by using MitoTracker Orange CMTM Ros and confocal microscopy. In ovarian oocytes, three mt distribution patterns were found: (I) small aggregates diffused throughout the cytoplasm; (II) diffused tubular networks; (III) pericortical tubular networks. Significantly higher rates of oocytes showing heterogeneous mt patterns (II+III) were obtained from bitches in F (75%) and in O (96%) compared with bitches in A (31%; F vs. A: P<0.05; O vs. A: P<0.001), in EL (61%; O vs. EL: P<0.01), or in MLL (0%; F vs. MLL: P<0.05; O vs. MLL: P<0.001). Fluorescence intensity did not vary according to mt distribution pattern except that it was lower in oocytes recovered in EL phase and showing small mt aggregations (P<0.001). The majority of ovulated MII stage oocytes (79%) showed diffused tubular mt network. We conclude that mt distribution pattern of canine ovarian immature oocytes changes in relation to reproductive cycle stage and that patterns observed in oocytes recovered from bitches in periovulatory phases are heterogeneous and similar to those of in vivo matured oocytes.

Nanofibrillar self-organization of regioregular poly(3-hexylthiophene) and [6,6]-phenyl C(61)-butyric acid methyl ester by dip-coating: a simple method to obtain efficient bulk heterojunction solar cells

In this paper the dip-coating technique has been investigated as a method for the production of regioregular poly(3-hexylthiophene) (RR-P3HT):[6,6]-phenyl C(61)-butyric acid methyl ester (PCBM)-based solar cells. We found that the utilization of the dip-coating technique for the RR-P3HT:PCBM system can facilitate its self-assembly into a nanofibrillar lamellar structure after evaporation of the solvent. The condition for the formation of the nanofibrillar structures leads to a power conversion efficiency of 3.6% by using only this approach without thermal treatment.
