Abstract
Background Allogeneic stem-cell transplantation (HSCT) is the only curative treatment in myelodysplastic syndromes (MDS). Azacitidine (AZA) is increasingly used prior to HSCT, however in Europe it is only approved for patients who are not eligible for HSCT. Patients and methods We conducted a phase II multicenter study to prospectively evaluate the feasibility of HSCT after treatment with AZA in 70 patients with a myelodysplastic syndrome (MDS), 19 with acute myeloid leukemia (AML), and 8 with chronic myelomonocytic leukemia (CMML). After a median of four cycles (range 1-11): 24% of patients achieved complete remission, 14% partial remission, 8% hematologic improvement, 32% had stable and 22% progressive disease. Ten patients discontinued treatment before the planned four cycles, due to an adverse event in nine cases. Results A HSC donor was identified in 73 patients, and HSCT was performed in 54 patients (74% of patients with a donor). Main reasons for turning down HSCT were lack of a donor, an adverse event, or progressive disease (9, 12, and 16 patients, respectively). At a median follow-up of 20.5 months from enrolment, response to AZA was the only independent prognostic factor for survival. Compared to baseline assessment, AZA treatment did not affect patients' comorbidities at HSCT: the HCT-CI remained stable in 62% patients, and worsened or improved in 23% and 15% of patients, respectively. Conclusions Our study shows that HSCT is feasible in the majority of patients with HR-MDS/AML/CMML-2 after AZA treatment. As matched unrelated donor was the most frequent source of donor cells, the time between diagnosis and HSCT needed for donor search could be 'bridged' using azacitidine. These data show that AZA prior to HSCT could be a better option than intensive chemotherapy in higher-risk MDS. The trial has been registered with the EudraCT number 2010-019673-1.

Abstract
A novel actinobacterium, designated isolate B138T, was isolated from the marine sponge, Amphimedon viridis, which was collected from Praia Guaecá (São Paulo, Brazil), and its taxonomic position was established using data from a polyphasic study. The organism showed a combination of chemotaxonomic and morphological characteristics consistent with its classification in the genus Williamsia and it formed a distinct phyletic line in the Williamsia 16S rRNA gene tree. It was most closely related to Williamsia serinedens DSM 45037T and Williamsia deligens DSM 44902T (99.0 % 16S rRNA gene sequence similarity) and Williamsia maris DSM 44693T (97.5 % 16S rRNA gene sequence similarity), but was distinguished readily from these strains by the low DNA-DNA relatedness values (62.3-64.4 %) and by the discriminatory phenotypic properties. Based on the data obtained, the isolate B138T (=CBMAI 1094T=DSM 46676T) should be classified as the type strain of a novel species of the genus Williamsia, for which the name Williamsia spongiae sp. nov. is proposed.

Abstract
A novel marine actinomycete, designated B374T, was isolated from a marine sponge, Glodia corticostylifera, which was collected from São Paulo, Brasil. The taxonomic position of B374T was established by using data derived from a polyphasic approach. The organism showed a combination of chemotaxonomic and morphological characteristics consistent with its classification in the genus Marmoricola and it formed a distinct phyletic line in the clade of the genus Marmoricola, based on 16S rRNA gene sequences. Strain B374T was most closely related to Marmoricola aequoreus SST-45T (98.5 % 16S rRNA gene sequence similarity), but was distinguished from this strain and from the other type strains of species of the genus Marmoricola on the basis of a combination of phenotypic properties. The data obtained, therefore, indicates that isolate B374T ( = CBMAI 1089T = DSM 28169T) should be classified as a novel species of the genus Marmoricola, for which the name Marmoricola aquaticus sp. nov. is proposed.

Abstract
The taxonomic position of a bacterium isolated from water samples from the Rio Negro, in Amazon, Brazil, was determined by using a polyphasic approach. The organism formed a distinct phyletic line in the Chromobacterium 16S rRNA gene tree and had chemotaxonomic and morphological properties consistent with its classification in this genus. It was found to be closely related to Chromobacterium vaccinii DSM 25150(T) (98.6 % 16S rRNA gene similarity) and shared 98.5 % 16S rRNA gene similarity with Chromobacterium piscinae LGM 3947(T). DNA-DNA relatedness studies showed that isolate CBMAI 310(T) belongs to distinct genomic species. The isolate was readily distinguished from the type strain of these species using a combination of phenotypic and chemotaxonomic properties. Thus, based on genotypic and phenotypic data, it is proposed that isolate CBMAI 310(T) (=DSM 26508(T)) be classified in the genus Chromobacterium as the type strain of a novel species, namely, Chromobacterium amazonense sp. nov.

Abstract
OBJECTIVE To investigate the effects of fractional microablative CO2 laser on sexual function and overall satisfaction with sexual life in postmenopausal women with vulvovaginal atrophy (VVA). METHOD This prospective study included 77 postmenopausal women (mean age 60.6 ± 6.2 years) treated for VVA symptoms with the fractional microablative CO2 laser system (SmartXide(2) V(2)LR, Monalisa Touch, DEKA, Florence, Italy). Sexual function and quality of life were evaluated with the Female Sexual Function Index (FSFI) and the Short Form 12 (SF-12), respectively, both at baseline and at 12-week follow-up. A 10-mm visual analog scale was used to measure the overall satisfaction with sexual life and the intensity of VVA symptoms (vaginal burning, vaginal itching, vaginal dryness, dyspareunia and dysuria) before and after the study period. RESULTS We observed a significant improvement in the total score and the scores in each specific domain of the FSFI at 12-week follow-up compared to baseline (p < 0.001). After concluding the laser treatment, the overall satisfaction with sexual life significantly improved (p < 0.001). Seventeen (85%) out of 20 (26%) women, not sexually active because of VVA severity at baseline, regained a normal sexual life at the 12-week follow-up. Finally, we also found a significant improvement in each VVA symptom (p < 0.001) and in quality-of-life evaluation, both for the scores in the physical (p = 0.013) and mental (p = 0.002) domains. CONCLUSIONS Fractional microablative CO2 laser treatment is associated with a significant improvement of sexual function and satisfaction with sexual life in postmenopausal women with VVA symptoms.

Abstract
AIM The aim of this study was to determine the efficacy of a new topic non-hormonal treatment for postmenopausal women complaining of symptoms of vaginal atrophy. METHODS Patients included in the study were prescribed Sinecol gel (AM PHARMA Srl, Vimercate, Monza and Brianza, Italy) application once a day for 20 consecutive days. Sinecol gel is a topic compound for vaginal atrophy containing hyaluronic acid, that is known to improve vaginal elasticity, lactoperoxidase, Xantham gum and glucose oxidase, which have protective and antibacterial action. We evaluated each patient before and after treatment, both subjectively with the "Visual Analogical Scale" (VAS) and objectively with the "Vaginal Health Index" (VHI). RESULTS We observed a significant clinical improvement of the subjective and objective assessment of symptoms severity with a p value <0.001 at the end of the treatment compared to baseline. CONCLUSION Sinecol gel appears to be an effective and valid non-hormonal alternative to the estrogen therapy for vaginal atrophy.

Abstract
BACKGROUND Bacterial vaginosis (BV), a poly-microbial clinical syndrome, is the most common cause of vaginal symptoms among women. The recurrence rate of BV is up to 30% after traditional antimicrobial therapy. Lactobacillus rhamnosus vaginal tablets have demonstrated to be a reliable topical effective and safe treatment to reduce the BV recurrence rate. AIM to assess topical long-lasting (6 months) Lactobacillus rhamnosus effectiveness in decreasing recurrences in women with positive anamnesis of recurrent BV and concomitant hypo-estrogenism as consequence of surgical menopause. PATIENTS AND METHODS A total of 22 consecutive patients affected by recurrent BV and treated for surgical menopause for benign pathology were enrolled. All women were treated with Lactobacillus rhamnosus vaginal tablets (Normogin(®)) according to the following protocol: 1 tablet/day for 6 days, than two tablets per week for 2 months and then one tablet once a week till 6 months. RESULTS Of the 22 women enrolled only one has been lost after the first visit. A total of 21 cases were reported; 7 out of 21 had only one case of recurrence, while 2 out of 21 had two episodes of BV during the year successive to menopause. No side effects have been reported. CONCLUSIONS Considering the low recurrence rate of BV during follow-up it seems that long-lasting treatment with vaginal tablets of Lactobacillus rhamnosus could reduce the BV recurrence also in women at high risk with positive history of pathology and undergoing surgical menopause with a safe profile. This study supports the use of vaginal Lactobacillus rhamnosus administration in high risk population without side effects.

Abstract
A bacterial strain designated SBR5T was isolated from the rhizosphere of Triticum aestivum. A phylogenetic analysis based on the 16S rRNA gene sequence placed the isolate within the genus Paenibacillus, being most closely related to Paenibacillus graminis RSA19T (98.1 % similarity). The isolate was a Gram-reaction-variable, motile, facultatively anaerobic bacterium, with spores in a terminal position in cells. Starch was utilized and dihydroxyacetone and catalase were produced. Strain SBR5T displayed plant-growth-promoting rhizobacteria characteristics: the ability to fix nitrogen and to produce siderophores and indole-3-acetic acid. The DNA G+C content was 55.1 mol%. Chemotaxonomic analysis of the isolated strain revealed that MK-7 was the predominant menaquinone, while the major fatty acid was anteiso-C15 : 0. DNA–DNA hybridization values between strain SBR5T and P. graminis RSA19T, Paenibacillus odorifer TOD45T and Paenibacillus borealis KK19T were 43, 35 and 28 %, respectively. These DNA relatedness data and the results of phylogenetic and phenotypic analyses showed that strain SBR5T should be considered as the nitrogen-fixing type strain of a novel species of the genus Paenibacillus, for which the name Paenibacillus riograndensis sp. nov. is proposed. The type strain is SBR5T (=CCGB 1313T =CECT 7330T).

Abstract
Autoimmune thrombocytopenia (AITP) is a disorder due to specific platelet auto-antibodies directed against platelet surface glycoproteins. AITP in adults is usually chronic, idiopathic and frequently refractory to conventional treatments. Myelo- and immuno-suppressive chemotherapy followed by autologous peripheral blood stem cell (PBSC) transplantation is an experimental approach for severe chronic refractory AITP. We report a case of a woman with AITP, refractory to the conventional therapy, submitted to T-cell-depleted autologous PBSC transplantation, which obtained long term stable response on platelet count. We deem that the positive outcome of our patient depends on T-cells depletion of the graft, which reduces autoreactive T clones.

Abstract
This study was performed to evaluate the incidence, risk factors, and outcome of cytomegalovirus (CMV) infection in autologous stem cell transplantation (ASCT), with the aim of performing preemptive therapy in patients with antigenemia. Starting from 2001, 171 consecutive ASCTs were performed in 136 patients; 102 of these patients were seropositive for CMV at the onset of hematological disease. In all these patients, a CMV pp65 antigenemia assay was determined weekly, starting from the day when the absolute neutrophil count went above 500/microL, and until day 60 after ASCT; subsequently, antigenemia was determined only when a CMV infection was suspected. Among the 136 transplanted patients, 40 (29.4%) presented a positive antigenemia; all of them were seropositive for CMV before ASCT; and no cases of primary infection were seen. The incidence of CMV infection in the seropositive population was 40/102 (39.3%); 6 patients (5 with multiple myeloma and 1 with non-Hodgkin's lymphoma) who received 2 ASCTs developed CMV infections after both transplantations, so that positive antigenemia developed after 46/171 (26.9%) transplantations. First positive antigenemia presented a median of 32 days (range 7-57) after stem cell reinfusion. The median antigenemia level at the first appearance was 2/200,000 (range 1-1000). No significant prognostic factors could be shown. Enteritis was present in 5 patients; 2 of them also had fever, and 1 of them also had thrombocytopenia. In 5 patients fever without any other clinical signs or symptoms was present; 30 patients were asymptomatic. Fourteen patients were treated with anti-CMV drugs. CMV reactivation was successfully treated in all patients, and no patient died from CMV disease.

Abstract
The purpose of this study was to investigate if specific immune responses were present in mice bearing a lung adenocarcinoma that presents paraneoplastic syndromes during tumor evolution. Leukocytosis, mainly due to polymorphonuclear leukocytes, was found from day 15 of tumor growth. Delayed type hypersensitivity response and increased interleukin-6 (IL-6) serum levels were observed along tumor growth. Concomitant immunity, specific rejection of a second inoculum and in vitro specific cytotoxicity occurred at 20 days of implant. In advanced stages of tumor evolution impaired cytotoxicity, accompanied by a great increase of IL-6 in serum, were observed. Role of polymorphonuclear leukocytes and IL-6 overproduction as responsible for immune dysregulation and paraneoplastic syndromes are discussed.

Abstract
Thrombotic thrombocytopenic purpura (TTP) is a common illness characterized by platelet thrombi within the microvascularization. In its natural course, this disease has had a mortality rate of 90%. Plasma infusion or exchange achieved a survival rate of 70% to 90%. However, 10% to 30% of patients surviving the initial TTP episode relapse at regular intervals. The treatment of recurrent forms of the disease remains a challenge; several approaches have been shown to induce medium to long term remissions. We describe a patient with recurrent TTP whose disease remitted after administration of defibrotide.

Abstract
Paraneoplastic syndromes are rarely described in animal models. It may be useful to have a suitable experimental model to study the mechanisms by which they are produced. In this study, we describe a murine lung adenocarcinoma, P07, which presents hypercalcemia, leukocytosis and cachexia. We determined the presence of PTHrP in plasma as well as GM-CSF produced by P07 cells. TNF-alpha, which is responsible for cachexia, could neither be detected in serum nor in P07 cell supernatants. We conclude that this model, which shows paraneoplastic syndromes similar to those of lung tumor patients, should be useful to study the pathways and significance of these signs.

Abstract
The association of systemic sclerosis (SSc) and non-Hodgkin's lymphoma (NHL) is a rare event whose pathogenesis remains to be clarified. We describe a case of NHL in a patient with SSc, in whom the NHL was particular in terms of clinical presentation (primitive muscle and bone involvement) and histologic type (large multilobated B-cell variant). The lymphoma was clinically aggressive but responded well to therapy. Surveillance for the development of "atypical" NHL is suggested in SSc cases.

Abstract
The classic amnesic syndrome is characterised by a severe anterograde amnesia and a less important retrograde amnesia with sparing of the semantic component. We report the case of a patient who showed a global amnesic syndrome following a mild head injury. Initially, amnesia was both anterograde and retrograde, and also involved semantic knowledge. Two years later the picture had changed remarkably. The retrograde deficit for autobiographical events was still total, while semantic memory had recovered to a large extent. Learning had also greatly improved, but only if assessed after a short delay; abnormally rapid forgetting rate were found at longer intervals. This pattern of impairment does not lend itself to an easy interpretation. However, the hypothesis of a consolidation deficit may be advanced.

Abstract
It is well known that L-asparaginase (L-Ase) treatment may cause thrombotic events in patients with acute lymphoblastic leukemia (ALL). The mechanism of this effect is not well understood although a reduction in plasma antithrombin III (AT III) levels is observed. In our study, a group of patients treated with L-Ase received AT III concentrates as adjuvant treatment. This adjuvant treatment reduced the levels of plasma D-dimer and thrombin-antithrombin complex, which are considered as early markers of a hypercoagulability state. These preliminary data suggest that large randomized trials will have to be conducted to improve our understanding of the role of AT III concentrates in ALL therapy.

Abstract
Twenty-one normal subjects, 32 bilateral parkinsonian patients (BPs) and 29 hemiparkinsonian patients (HP) were submitted to separate or sequentially associated motor tasks that included simple reaction times (RT), choice RTs, directional RTs, and movement RTs. The results showed that simple RTs, directional RTs, and movement times (MT) were slower in BPs as compared to normal subjects; for choice RTs there was no difference. Response patterns were similar in normal controls and BPs. In both groups RTs became more prolonged as sequentially programmed operations increased. If movement occurred at the end of the sequence, they prolonged the RTs of the preceding operations, but MTs per se did not vary. In HPs the same results were observed on the "bad" hand side versus normal controls and versus the healthy side, but a significant statistical level was reached mainly when the "bad" hand was the right one.

Abstract
Neuropsychological follow-up was studied in 70 consecutive head-injured subjects aged over 50 years. Diffuse deterioration (28%), moderate deterioration (25%) and dementia (21%) were the most frequent sequelae. Analysis of correlations between neuropsychological sequelae and trauma variables showed that: (1) mild trauma did not necessarily imply good prognosis and could be followed by very severe consequences; (2) duration of post-traumatic amnesia was correlated with coma duration but not with neuropsychological outcome; (3) on the whole, no prognostic predictor of the outcome was found.

Abstract
In this study we evaluated the release of some mediators of inflammatory reactions such as histamine (H), leukotriene B4 (LTB4), leukotriene C4 (LTC4) and prostaglandin D2 (PGD2) in the cerebrospinal fluid (CSF) of 15 patients with acquired immunodeficiency syndrome (AIDS), eight with opportunistic infections of the central nervous system (CNS) and seven without HIV-related neurological pathology, and of 25 HIV-negative control subjects with other neurological diseases. The cerebrospinal LTB4 level was increased in all the AIDS patients (mean 348 pg/ml); the control group revealed normal levels of LTB4 in the CSF (mean 63.2 pg/ml). The PGD2 level in the HIV-positive (mean 264 pg/ml) patients was higher than of the control subjects (mean 50 pg/ml), while low LTC4 levels were found both in the HIV-positive and control groups. We did not find any significant concentration of H in the CSF of either the HIV-positive or the control subjects. These findings may be due to the presence of chronic HIV infection or to the opportunistic infections of the CNS that so often occur in the latest stages of the disease.

Abstract
This paper calls attention to the methodologies designed to investigate the higher cortical functions in order to elicit signis of encephalopathy in apparently normal conditions. This can be done by testing the blobal hemispheric funcionts or the interhemispheric functional balance. This shows up the clinical sequels that may precede or be the outcome both of transient pathological disorders, such as transient global anemia, migraine, TIAs and subarachnoid hemorrhage without apparent clinical consequences and of nontransient pathological conditions, such as epilepsy, occupational diseases, arterial hypertension and cerebral revascularization.

Abstract
A Multivariate Analysis of Covariance and Discriminant Analysis were carried out on complete WAIS profiles obtained from three groups of demented patients: Multi-Infarct Dementia patients, Senile Dementia of Alzheimer Type patients, and Alcoholic Dementia patients. A group of middle-aged Depressed patients was also included. WAIS did not differentiate among dementias, but Picture Completion and Block Design subtests proved to be effective in differentiating dementia from depression.

Abstract
Involuntary groping-grasping responses to visual stimuli were studied in relation to the location of the stimuli in the space surrounding the patient. The following space-related patterns of stimulus-response were observed in four patients: (a) responses were evoked only by visual stimuli in the hemispace ipsilateral to the arm involved; (b) responses were evoked only by visual stimuli within the reach of maximal arm extension; (c) responses were evoked only by visual stimuli in the space around the hand; (d) all such patterns were variously combined. These findings are discussed in relation to the general problem of specific correlations between sensorimotor subsystems and peripersonal behavioral space.

Changes in interhemispheric functional balance in epileptic and migraine patients. FUNCTIONAL NEUROLOGY 1986; 1:375-8. [PMID: 3609868] [Citation(s) in RCA: 0] [Impact Index Per Article: 0] [Reference Citation Analysis] [Abstract] [MESH Headings] [Subscribe] [Scholar Register] [Indexed: 01/06/2023]
Abstract
In relation to the general problem of neuropsychological conditions in epileptic and migraine patients, the literature is reviewed and new data are presented emphasizing the specific heuristic value of methods investigating interhemispheric functional balance. Available data indicate that: a) in epileptic monohemispheric non-lesional patients an interhemispheric functional change in favour of the epileptic hemisphere is detectable, more manifest when the left hemisphere is involved; b) in migraine patients interhemispheric functional changes are detectable only during the paroxysmal phase, more manifest when the left hemisphere is involved.

Abstract
Sixty subjects with uncomplicated essential hypertension and 60 matched normal subjects were submitted to neuropsychological tests in order to establish whether some impairment of cognitive functions can be evidenced even in those hypertensive subjects that are in this respect asymptomatic on standard examination and interview. The hypertensive subjects obtained significantly poorer results than normotensive subjects on memory, visuo-motor and performance tests. In the control group, the classic negative correlation pattern between age and scores was observed, while in the patient group this correlation could be confirmed only in a few tests. Subgrouping of patients according to hypertension duration and treatment showed that the impairment of cognitive functions manifested itself very early and did not tend to progress within 6-10 years of hypertension duration.

Abstract
In relation to the general issue of the long-term effects of epileptic activity on the higher nervous functions, monohemispheric epileptic patients--divided into "lesional" [i.e., with computed tomography (CT) scan-visible lesions] and "nonlesional" (i.e., with CT scan-nonvisible lesions)--were submitted to dichotic verbal and tonal tasks, dichoptic verbal and spatial tasks, and a visual tachistoscopic attentional task. The aim was to investigate whether the typical patterns of hemispheric prevalence, which were observed in normal subjects by using these tests, undergo significant changes in epileptic patients. The findings versus normal subjects seem to demonstrate that (a) in lesional epileptic patients, the prevalence of the hemisphere without macroscopic lesions is a constant rule, whether or not this hemisphere is prevalent in normal subjects; (b) in nonlesional epileptic patients, the patterns are the following: when the epileptic hemisphere is the one that is prevalent in normal subjects, its prevalence is enhanced, whichever the hemisphere; when the epileptic hemisphere is not the hemisphere prevalent in normal subjects, the left one attracts and maintains prevalence, whereas the right one reduces and variously interferes with contralateral prevalence. It is concluded that, with respect to the functions tested, the nature of the epileptic foci seems to influence markedly the interhemispheric prevalence pattern.

Interhemispheric differences in same versus different judgments upon presentation of complex visual stimuli. Neuropsychologia 1984; 22:527-30. Abstract
An experiment is reported which was aimed at investigating interhemispheric differences upon tachistoscopic presentation of Same vs Different stimuli, i.e. pairs of 16-side Vanderplas and Garvin figures selected for their complexity, unfamiliarity and lack of verbalization. The right hemisphere was found to be faster and more accurate in Same judgements and the left hemisphere in Different judgements. These findings seem to further confirm the assumption that the right hemisphere would mostly use a holistic strategy and the left hemisphere an analytic strategy.

Abstract
The psychological and behavioural impairment following head injury has been investigated in order to throw light on and assess the related epidemiological aspects, methodological approaches, clinical manifestations, and the correlations between the sequelae and the variables of head trauma, i.e. degree of severity of trauma, age of patients, presence or absence of fractures and haematoma. This study was conducted on 117 head- injured patients and 43 matched "control" subjects. The findings point out the following: a) Even the medical staff is often largely misinformed about this type of sequelae. The methods used for assessment should therefore be further developed and a more systematic evaluation of the higher functions following head injury appears to be necessary. b) The syndromes observed are mostly of a composite and diffuse type. It is therefore difficult to classify them according to strict criteria; indeed, it appears that the only possible approach is to define large groups of head- injured patients based on clinical description, which are partly borne out and partly described ex novo in the present series. c) As regards the correlations between the variables of the injury and the resulting neuropsychological impairment, the age factor should be distinguished from the severity of injury. If it is true that the older patients, the greater the impairment, such a direct correlation no longer exists when severity of the injury is considered. Indeed, the latter does not appear to be a significant differential factor in determining the degree of impairment. Similarly, whether the injury is an "open" or "closed" one, or the presence of haematoma do not appear to be differential factors, either.

Abstract
A case of permanent global amnesia resulting from a bilateral hippocampal lesion is reported, remarkable for its typical clinical picture and prolonged period of observation with repeated neuropsychological testing. No tendency toward spontaneous recovery was noted, even though extra-mnesic cognitive functions remained undamaged. No differences were observed between this amnesic syndrome and the neuropsychological picture during an acute episode of transient global amnesia.

Localized nodular myositis and the diagnosis of the localized muscle mass. ITALIAN JOURNAL OF NEUROLOGICAL SCIENCES 1983; 4:179-84. Abstract
Localized nodular myositis (LNM) is a rare variant of polymyositis beginning with inflammatory nodules within muscles. Only seven cases have so far been reported in the literature. We describe a probable further case of LNM in a 67-year-old man with ischemic claudication of the left leg for three years who presented with painful nodules in the left gastrocnemius muscle and signs of systemic disease; a complete follow-up was not possible, because the patient died after only two months and autopsy was not performed. Muscle biopsy showed localized areas of necrotic and inflammatory pleomorphic changes, in keeping with the features of the other known cases. The ultrastructural findings (not previously reported in this disease) were characterized by marked changes of endomysial capillaries, with fibroblastic metamorphosis of the endothelial cells, and by the presence of filamentous inclusions in the myonuclei. The differential diagnosis of LNM from other localized muscle masses, chiefly from muscle infarct, is discussed.

Abstract
A patient with a right temporal lesion is described who, in recognising sounds and noises, complained of deficits which seemed to be most evident when sounds and noises could be recognised mainly by timbre whereas no deficit was noticed when pitch and rhythm were the main indicators. In addition, some global distortions in musical appreciation were complained of and described as "resonance" or "loss of aesthetic pleasure".

Abstract
Sixty right-handed non-musician subjects, thirty males and thirty females, and thirty right-handed musician subjects, seventeen males and thirteen females, were submitted to dichotically presented tonal sequences. Immediate identification procedure with preliminary training was used. The results point out that both, musicians and non-musicians, males and females, show significant left ear dominance. The left ear dominance was more frequent in musicians. The results are discussed in the light of the "analytic-synthetic" theory of Bever and Chiarello and the "temporal" theory of Gordon.
