Abstract
This paper describes a novel approach to the unobtrusive assessment of a subset of gait characteristics using a light detection and ranging (LIDAR) device. The developed device is poised to enable unobtrusive, nearly continuous monitoring and inference of patients' gait characteristics to assess physical and cognitive states. The device provides a rapidly sampled signal representing the distance of a participant's body from the LIDAR device. The densely sampled distance estimation is processed by custom algorithms that can potentially be used to estimate various gait characteristics such as step size, cadence, double support, and even step-size symmetry.Clinical Relevance- Since gait is a complex behavior that requires seamless cooperation of multiple systems, including sensation, perception, muscular synergies, and even cognition. Subtle changes in gait may, therefore, indicate issues with physical and mental functionality. In addition to the walking speed, the gait monitoring results can provide inferences about the physical and cognitive states of the unobtrusively monitored individuals using their own data as a baseline.

Abstract
AbstractMany species of parasitoid wasps use plant volatiles to locate their herbivorous hosts. These volatiles are reliable indicators of host presence when their emission in plants is induced by herbivory. Hyperparasitoids may also use information from lower trophic levels to locate their parasitoid hosts but little is known about the role of volatiles from the plant–host complex in the foraging behavior of hyperparasitoids. Here, we studied how Dendrocerus aphidum (Megaspilidae) responds to plant and host volatiles in a series of experiments. This hyperparasitoid uses aphid mummies as its host and hampers biological control of aphids by parasitoids in greenhouse horticulture. We found that D. aphidum females were strongly attracted to volatiles from mummy-infested sweet pepper plants, but only when clean air was offered as an alternative odor source in the Y-tube olfactometer. Hyperparasitoid females did not have a preference for mummy-infested plants when volatiles from aphid-infested or healthy pepper plants were presented as an alternative. These olfactory responses of D. aphidum were mostly independent of prior experience. Volatiles from the host itself were also highly attractive to D. aphidum, but again hyperparasitoid females only had a preference in the absence of plant volatiles. Our findings suggest that plant volatiles may confuse, rather than guide the foraging behavior of D. aphidum. Mummy hyperparasitoids, such as D. aphidum, can use a wide variety of mummies and are thus extreme generalists at the lower trophic levels, which may explain the limited role of (induced) plant volatiles in their host searching behavior.

Abstract
In perennial plants, interactions with other community members during the vegetative growth phase may influence community assembly during subsequent reproductive years and may influence plant fitness. It is well-known that plant responses to herbivory affect community assembly within a growing season, but whether plant-herbivore interactions result in legacy effects on community assembly across seasons has received little attention. Moreover, whether plant-herbivore interactions during the vegetative growing season are important in predicting plant fitness directly or indirectly through legacy effects is poorly understood.Here, we tested whether plant-arthropod interactions in the vegetative growing season of perennial wild cabbage plants, Brassica oleracea, result in legacy effects in arthropod community assembly in the subsequent reproductive season and whether legacy effects have plant fitness consequences. We monitored the arthropod community on plants that had been induced with either aphids, caterpillars or no herbivores in a full-factorial design across 2 years. We quantified the plant traits 'height', 'number of leaves' and 'number of flowers' to understand mechanisms that may mediate legacy effects. We measured seed production in the second year to evaluate plant fitness consequences of legacy effects.Although we did not find community responses to the herbivory treatments, our data show that community composition in the first year leaves a legacy on community composition in a second year: predator community composition co-varied across years. Structural equation modelling analyses indicated that herbivore communities in the vegetative year correlated with plant performance traits that may have caused a legacy effect on especially predator community assembly in the subsequent reproductive year. Interestingly, the legacy of the herbivore community in the vegetative year predicted plant fitness better than the herbivore community that directly interacted with plants in the reproductive year. Synthesis. Thus, legacy effects of plant-herbivore interactions affect community assembly on perennial plants across growth seasons and these processes may affect plant reproductive success. We argue that plant-herbivore interactions in the vegetative phase as well as in the cross-seasonal legacy effects caused by plant responses to arthropod herbivory may be important in perennial plant trait evolution such as ontogenetic variation in growth and defence strategies.

Abstract
There is increasing evidence showing that microbes can influence plant-insect interactions. In addition, various studies have shown that aboveground pathogens can alter the interactions between plants and insects. However, little is known about the role of soil-borne pathogens in plant-insect interactions. It is also not known how environmental conditions, that steer the performance of soil-borne pathogens, might influence these microbe-plant-insect interactions. Here, we studied effects of the soil-borne pathogen Rhizoctonia solani on aphids (Sitobion avenae) using wheat (Triticum aestivum) as a host. In a greenhouse experiment, we tested how different levels of soil organic matter (SOM) and fertilizer addition influence the interactions between plants and aphids. To examine the influence of the existing soil microbiome on the pathogen effects, we used both unsterilized field soil and sterilized field soil. In unsterilized soil with low SOM content, R. solani addition had a negative effect on aphid biomass, whereas it enhanced aphid biomass in soil with high SOM content. In sterilized soil, however, aphid biomass was enhanced by R. solani addition and by high SOM content. Plant biomass was enhanced by fertilizer addition, but only when SOM content was low, or in the absence of R. solani. We conclude that belowground pathogens influence aphid performance and that the effect of soil pathogens on aphids can be more positive in the absence of a soil microbiome. This implies that experiments studying the effect of pathogens under sterile conditions might not represent realistic interactions. Moreover, pathogen-plant-aphid interactions can be more positive for aphids under high SOM conditions. We recommend that soil conditions should be taken into account in the study of microbe-plant-insect interactions.

Abstract
Parasitoid wasps are excellent organisms for studying the allocation of host resources to different fitness functions such as adult body mass and development time. Koinobiont parasitoids attack hosts that continue feeding and growing during parasitism, whereas idiobiont parasitoids attack non-growing host stages or paralyzed hosts. Many adult female koinobionts attack a broad range of host stages and are therefore faced with a different set of dynamic challenges compared with idiobionts, where host resources are largely static. Thus far studies on solitary koinobionts have been almost exclusively based on primary parasitoids, yet it is known that many of these are in turn attacked by both koinobiont and idiobiont hyperparasitoids. Here we compare parasitism and development of a primary koinobiont hyperparasitoid, Mesochorus gemellus (Hymenoptera: Ichneumonidae) in larvae of the gregarious primary koinobiont parasitoid, Cotesia glomerata (Hymenoptera: Braconidae) developing in the secondary herbivore host, Pieris brassicae (Lepidoptera: Pieridae). As far as we know this is the first study to examine development of a solitary primary hyperparasitoid in different stages of its secondary herbivore host. Pieris brassicae caterpillars were parasitized as L1 by C. glomerata and then these parasitized caterpillars were presented in separate cohorts to M. gemellus as L3, L4 or L5 instar P. brassicae. Different instars of the secondary hosts were used as proxies for different developmental stages of the primary host, C. glomerata. Larvae of C. glomerata in L5 P. brassicae were significantly longer than those in L3 and L4 caterpillars. Irrespective of secondary host instar, every parasitoid cluster was hyperparasitized by M. gemellus but all only produced male progeny. Male development time decreased with host stage attacked, whereas adult male body mass did not, which shows that M. gemellus is able to optimally exploit older host larvae in terms of adult size despite their decreasing mass during the pupal stage. Across a range of cocoon masses, hyperparasitoid adult male body mass was approximately 84% as large as primary parasitoids, revealing that M. gemellus is almost as efficient at exploiting host resources as secondary (pupal) hyperparasitoids.

Abstract
Patients with amyotrophic lateral sclerosis require comprehensive care with a multidisciplinary approach, which is individually adjusted to each patient. The goals of neurorehabilitation should be adjusted to the stage of disease. In early stages, physical therapy is focused on preserving and optimizing motor and respiratory function. At this stage, family should be involved to partake in desired activities and be informed regarding the natural course of the disease. In late stages, physical therapy is focused on preventing respiratory complications and contractures, and orthotics may also be recommended. The onset of dysarthria should trigger swallowing and pulmonary function testing. Swallowing maneuvers should be tried at the onset of symptoms, later feeding tubes or percutaneous gastrostomy tube is necessary. Noninvasive mechanical ventilation may delay the need of tracheostomy and invasive mechanical ventilation. The key objectives of multidisciplinary teams are to optimize medical care, facilitate communication, and thus to improve the quality of care and quality of life.

The predictive effect of initial complete blood count of intensive care unit patients on mortality, length of hospitalization, and nosocomial infections. Abstract
OBJECTIVE The mean platelet volume (MPV) can be used as an indicator of platelet activation. However, it has been shown that the platelet/lymphocyte ratio (PLR) can provide useful predictive information about inflammation and aggregation pathways. The neutrophil/lymphocyte ratio (NLR) may also be helpful as a marker of systemic or local inflammation. The main objective of this study evaluated to unselected critically ill patients the relationship of initial MPV, NLR, and PLR with mortality, length of hospitalization, and the risk of developing nosocomial infections in ICU patients. PATIENTS AND METHODS In this retrospective study, we evaluated consecutive patients at our tertiary nine-bed ICU. One hundred seventy-three patients who were followed up during a 1-year period were included. RESULTS MPV levels were found to be higher in patients who died in the hospital (p = 0.05). In addition, there was a significant positive correlation between expected mortality rate and MPV among non-survivors (p = 0.009). NLR levels were higher among non-survivors, but this difference was not statistically significant (p = 0.435). PLR levels were similar between non-survivors and survivors (p = 0.173). The initial NLR and PLR were significantly higher in patients with nosocomial infections. NLR and PLR had a significant positive correlation with length of hospitalization (p = 0.006 and p = 0.027, respectively). CONCLUSIONS In our study, we found that high PLR and NLR may be indicators for the development of nosocomial infections. Moreover, the length of hospitalization may be prolonged in patients with high PLR and NLR.

Abstract
According to the European Pressure Ulcer Advisory Panel (EPUAP) definition, pressure ulcer is a local skin or subcutaneous tissue damage due to the force of pressure or friction or their combination. Pressure ulcers have accompanied humans since the beginning and respective descriptions are found in the 19th century literature. Pressure ulcer is a major medical, social and health-economic problem because it is associated with a number of complications that require multidisciplinary approach in care and treatment. In affected patients, pressure ulcer causes quality of life reduction, discomforts, pain, emotional problems and social isolation. If the process of tissue decay is not halted, tissue damage will spread involving deep and wider structures, thus seriously compromising the patient general condition. Pressure ulcer usually develops at the sites of protrusions formed by lumbar spine, ischium, hip, ankle, knee or elbow, as well as in the areas with less developed adipose tissue. Any temporary or permanent immobility should be perceived as a milieu favoring the onset of pressure ulcer. Advances in medicine and standards of living in general have prolonged life expectancy, thus also increasing the population at risk of chronic diseases including pressure ulcer. The aim of the study was to determine the relationship between the length of bed-ridden condition and the occurrence of pressure ulcers in patients treated at Department of Cerebrovascular Diseases and Intensive Neurology from January 1, 2012 until December 31, 2015. The study included patients with pressure ulcer verified on admission and those having developed pressure ulcer during hospital stay. Clinical picture of severe stroke predominated in the majority of study patients. Patients were divided into groups according to health care requirements as classified by the Croatian Chamber of Nurses. Preliminary results indicated the length of bed-ridden condition to be associated with the occurrence of chronic wounds, and thus with increased cost and length of hospital treatment. Therefore, health care methods and procedures should be focused on reduction of pressure ulcer development, quality health care, implementation of preventive measures, and continuous education of health care professionals.

Abstract
Cytomegalovirus (CMV) is an important pathogen in immunocompromised individuals. The aim of this study was to analyze prevalence and dynamics of CMV infection among patients undergoing chronic hemodialysis. From 2010 to 2012, a total of 162 patients and 160 control subjects were tested for the presence of CMV IgM and IgG antibodies using enzyme-linked immunosorbent assay. IgM/IgG reactive samples were further evaluated for IgG avidity to confirm or rule out recent primary CMV infection. The overall IgG seropositivity was higher in hemodialysis patients compared to controls (90.7% vs. 81.9%; crude odds ratio [OR] =2.02, 95% confidence interval [CI] =1.05–3.89; OR adjusted for age and gender = 2.18, 95% CI = 1.05–4.55). CMV IgG antibody titers were similar in both groups. There was no difference in CMV prevalence between males (87.9%) and females (96.3%). According to age, a progressive increase in seropositivity was observed in both hemodialysis patients and the control group. Three hemodialysis patients (1.9%) developed recurrent CMV infection (positive IgM with high avidity IgG antibodies). In one patient (2.9%), seroconversion was documented during the second year of the follow-up period indicating primary infection. In contrast, in the control group, recent primary CMV infection (positive IgM with low/borderline IgG avidity) was demonstrated in three subjects (1.9%), whereas one (0.6%) developed recurrent infection. On multivariate logistic regression, hemodialysis and older age were significant predictors for CMV seropositivity.

We report results of a search for weakly interacting massive particles (WIMPS) with the silicon detectors of the CDMS II experiment. This blind analysis of 140.2 kg day of data taken between July 2007 and September 2008 revealed three WIMP-candidate events with a surface-event background estimate of 0.41(-0.08)(+0.20)(stat)(-0.24)(+0.28)(syst). Other known backgrounds from neutrons and 206Pb are limited to <0.13 and <0.08 events at the 90% confidence level, respectively. The exposure of this analysis is equivalent to 23.4 kg day for a recoil energy range of 7-100 keV for a WIMP of mass 10 GeV/c2. The probability that the known backgrounds would produce three or more events in the signal region is 5.4%. A profile likelihood ratio test of the three events that includes the measured recoil energies gives a 0.19% probability for the known-background-only hypothesis when tested against the alternative WIMP+background hypothesis. The highest likelihood occurs for a WIMP mass of 8.6 GeV/c2 and WIMP-nucleon cross section of 1.9×10(-41) cm2.

Abstract
BACKGROUND Most insect-resistant transgenic crops employ toxins to control pests. A novel approach is to enhance the effectiveness of natural enemies by genetic engineering of the biosynthesis of volatile organic compounds (VOCs). Before the commercialisation of such transgenic plants can be pursued, detailed fundamental studies of their effects on herbivores and their natural enemies are necessary. The linalool/nerolidol synthase gene FaNES1 was constitutively expressed from strawberry in three Arabidopsis thaliana accessions, and the behaviour of the aphid Brevicoryne brassicae L., the parasitoid Diaeretiella rapae McIntosh and the predator Episyrphus balteatus de Geer was studied. RESULTS Transgenic FaNES1-expressing plants emitted (E)-nerolidol and larger amounts of (E)-DMNT and linalool. Brevicoryne brassicae was repelled by the transgenic lines of two of the accessions, whereas its performance was not affected. Diaeretiella rapae preferred aphid-infested transgenic plants over aphid-infested wild-type plants for two of the accessions. In contrast, female E. balteatus predators did not differentiate between aphid-infested transgenic or wild-type plants. CONCLUSION The results indicate that the genetic engineering of plants to modify their emission of VOCs holds considerable promise for facilitating biological control of herbivores. Validation for crop plants is a necessary next step to assess the usefulness of modified volatile emission in integrated pest management.

Abstract
Glucosinolates (GLS) are secondary plant metabolites that as a result of tissue damage, for example due to herbivory, are hydrolysed into toxic compounds that negatively affect generalist herbivores. Specialist herbivores have evolved specific adaptations to detoxify GLS or inhibit the formation of toxic hydrolytic products. Although rarely studied, GLS and their breakdown products may also affect parasitoids. The objectives were to test the effects of GLS in a multitrophic system consisting of the generalist herbivore Spodoptera exigua, the specialist herbivore Pieris rapae, and the endoparasitoid Hyposoter ebeninus. Three ecotypes of Arabidopsis thaliana that differ in their GLS composition and concentrations and one transformed line that constitutively produces higher concentrations of aliphatic GLS were used, the latter allowing a direct assessment of the effects of aliphatic GLS on insect performance. Feeding by the generalist S. exigua and the specialist P. rapae induced both higher aliphatic and indole GLS concentrations in the A. thaliana ecotypes, although induction was stronger for indole than aliphatic GLS. For both herbivores a negative correlation between performance and aliphatic GLS concentrations was observed. This suggests that the specialist, despite containing a nitrile-specifier protein (NSP) that diverts GLS degradation from toxic isothiocyanates to less toxic nitriles, cannot completely inhibit the formation of toxic GLS hydrolytic products, or that the costs of this mechanism are higher at higher GLS concentrations. Surprisingly, performance of the parasitoid was positively correlated with higher concentrations of aliphatic GLS in the plant, possibly caused by negative effects on host immune responses. Our study indicates that GLS can not only confer resistance against herbivores directly, but also indirectly by increasing the performance of the parasitoids of these herbivores.

We investigated herbivore-mediated effects of glucosinolates on the parasitoid wasp Diaeretiella rapae and the predator Episyrphus balteatus. We reared B. brassicae on three ecotypes of Arabidopsis thaliana that differ in glucosinolate content and on one genetically transformed line with modified concentrations of aliphatic glucosinolates. We tested aphid performance and the performance and behavior of both natural enemies. We correlated this with phloem and aphid glucosinolate concentrations and emission of volatiles. Brevicoryne brassicae performance correlated positively with concentrations of both aliphatic and indole glucosinolates in the phloem. Aphids selectively sequestered glucosinolates. Glucosinolate concentration in B. brassicae correlated negatively with performance of the predator, but positively with performance of the parasitoid, possibly because the aphids with the highest glucosinolate concentrations had a higher body weight. Both natural enemies showed a positive performance-preference correlation. The predator preferred the ecotype with the lowest emission of volatile glucosinolate breakdown products in each test combination, whereas the parasitoid wasp preferred the A. thaliana ecotype with the highest emission of these volatiles. The study shows that there are differential herbivore-mediated effects of glucosinolates on a predator and a parasitoid of a specialist aphid that selectively sequesters glucosinolates from its host plant.

Abstract
We report results from a reanalysis of data from the Cryogenic Dark Matter Search (CDMS II) experiment at the Soudan Underground Laboratory. Data taken between October 2006 and September 2008 using eight germanium detectors are reanalyzed with a lowered, 2 keV recoil-energy threshold, to give increased sensitivity to interactions from weakly interacting massive particles (WIMPs) with masses below ∼10 GeV/c(2). This analysis provides stronger constraints than previous CDMS II results for WIMP masses below 9 GeV/c(2) and excludes parameter space associated with possible low-mass WIMP signals from the DAMA/LIBRA and CoGeNT experiments.

Abstract
Background Measuring arterial stiffness using pulse wave velocity (PWV) has become an important tool to assess vascular function and cardiovascular mortality. For subject with hypertension, end-stage renal disease and diabetes, PWV has been shown to predict cardiovascular and all-cause mortality. We hypothesize that PWV would also predict mortality in subjects who have undergone kidney transplantation. Methods A cohort of 330 patients with renal transplantation was studied with a mean age at entry 51.4 ± 0.75 years. Mean follow-up was 3.8 years (± 0.7 years); 16 deaths occurred during follow-up. At entry, together with standard clinical and biochemical parameters, PWV was determined from pressure tracing over carotid and femoral arteries. Results With increasing PWV, there was a significant increase in age, systolic blood pressure and pulse pressure. In addition, subjects with higher PWV also exhibited more frequently the presence of coronary heart disease. On the basis of Cox analyses, PWV and systolic blood pressure emerged as predictors of all-cause mortality. Conclusion These results provide evidence that PWV is a strong predictor of all-cause mortality in the population of renal transplant recipients.

Abstract
We report on the first axion search results from the Cryogenic Dark Matter Search (CDMS) experiment at the Soudan Underground Laboratory. An energy threshold of 2 keV for electron-recoil events allows a search for possible solar axion conversion into photons or local galactic axion conversion into electrons in the germanium crystal detectors. The solar axion search sets an upper limit on the Primakov coupling g(agammagamma) of 2.4x10(-9) GeV-1 at the 95% confidence level for an axion mass less than 0.1 keV/c2. This limit benefits from the first precise measurement of the absolute crystal plane orientations in this type of experiment. The galactic axion search analysis sets a world-leading experimental upper limit on the axioelectric coupling g(aee) of 1.4x10(-12) at the 90% confidence level for an axion mass of 2.5 keV/c2.

Abstract
Although integrated pest management (IPM) strategies have been developed worldwide, further improvement of IPM effectiveness is required. The use of transgenic technology to create insect-resistant plants can offer a solution to the limited availability of highly insect-resistant cultivars. Commercially available insect-resistant transgenic crops show clear benefits for agriculture and there are many exciting new developments such as transgenic plants that enhance biological control. Effective evaluation tools are needed to ascertain that transgenic plants do not result in undesired non-target effects. If these conditions are met, there will be ample opportunities for transgenic plants to become key components of environmentally benign and durable pest management systems. Here we discuss the potential and challenges for incorporating transgenic plants in IPM.

Abstract
This paper presents a fetus with mosaic trisomy 9 diagnosed by chorionic villus sampling and confirmed by cordocentesis, and compares this case with published cases in order better to define the ultrasound markers confined to trisomy 9 syndrome. Detailed fetal ultrasound examination was carried out, revealing shortened femur, placental cysts and oligohydramnios. All published trisomy 9 cases with abnormal ultrasound findings were extracted from the MEDLINE database in the period from 1973 to 2002. We found 12 non-mosaic and 13 mosaic cases, including our case. The most frequent ultrasound abnormalities included characteristic cardiac, skeletal, craniofacial and central nervous system malformations. Intrauterine growth restriction and single umbilical artery were prevalent non-specific findings in both non-mosaic and mosaic groups. Parental chromosomal variations, as in our case, were not uncommon findings. When a fetus shows structural anomalies suggesting the presence of trisomy 9, karyotyping should be performed on both chorionic villi or amniocytes and fetal blood lymphocytes to enable a correct diagnosis to be made.

Abstract
The Sudbury Neutrino Observatory (SNO) used an array of 3He proportional counters to measure the rate of neutral-current interactions in heavy water and precisely determined the total active (nu_x) 8B solar neutrino flux. This technique is independent of previous methods employed by SNO. The total flux is found to be 5.54_-0.31;+0.33(stat)-0.34+0.36(syst)x10(6) cm(-2) s(-1), in agreement with previous measurements and standard solar models. A global analysis of solar and reactor neutrino results yields Deltam2=7.59_-0.21;+0.19x10(-5) eV2 and theta=34.4_-1.2;+1.3 degrees. The uncertainty on the mixing angle has been reduced from SNO's previous results.

Abstract
AIMS The aim of the present analysis was to evaluate the cost-effectiveness of alternative treatments for outpatients with chronic schizophrenia from the healthcare payer's perspective. METHODS Decision analysis was used to evaluate the cost-effectiveness of the following antipsychotic drugs: amisulpride, aripiprazole, haloperidol (oral formulation), haloperidol (depot formulation), olanzapine, quetiapine, risperidone (oral formulation), risperidone (depot formulation) and ziprazidone. Clinical and economic outcomes were modelled over 1-year time horizon. Effectiveness was measured as a percentage of patients in remission. Clinical parameters used in the model included compliance rates, rehospitalisation rates for compliant and non-compliant patients, duration and frequency of hospitalisation, and adverse event rates. One-way sensitivity analysis was performed to test the robustness of the model. RESULTS The most effective treatment was treatment with olanzapine where 64.1% of patients remained in remission. The least effective treatment was treatment with quetiapine where 32.7% of patients remained in remission. Overall costs ranged from 3,726.78 Euro for haloperidol to 8,157.03 Euro for risperidone in depot formulation. Inpatient costs represented the major part of costs for most of antipsychotic drugs. Typical antipsychotic drugs had substantially smaller outpatient costs (6.5%) compared with atypical antipsychotics (37.9%). In the base case scenario the non-dominated treatment strategies were haloperidol, haloperidol decanoate and olanzapine. Additionally, risperidone can also be considered to be part of the efficient frontier based on the sensitivity analysis results. CONCLUSION Among second-generation antipsychotics, which have a better safety profile than first-generation antipsychotics, olanzapine and risperidone showed to be the most cost-effective treatment strategies for outpatient treatment of chronic schizophrenia.

Abstract
AIM The aim of this study was to evaluate the advantages of the Misgav Ladach surgical technique compared to traditional cesarean section. METHODS A prospective randomized trial of 111 women undergoing cesarean section was carried out in the Pula General Hospital. Forty-nine operations were performed using the Pfannenstiel method of cesarean section, 55 by the Misgav Ladach method and 7 by lower midline laparotomy. RESULTS It was proved that the cases where the Misgav Ladach method was implemented, compared to the Pfannenstiel method, showed a significantly shorter delivery/extraction and operative time (P=0.0009), the incision pain on the second postoperative day was significantly lower (0.021), we recorded a quicker stand up and walking time (P=0.013), significantly fewer analgesic injections and a shorter duration of analgesia were required (P=0.0009) and the bowel function was restored to normal sooner (P=0.001). CONCLUSION The Misgav Ladach method of cesarean section has advantages over the Pfannenstiel method in so far as it is significantly quicker to perform, with diminished postoperative pain and less use of postoperative analgesics. The recovery of physiologic function is faster. No differences were found in intraoperative bleeding, maternal morbidity, scar appearance, uterus postoperative involution and the assessment of the inflammation response to the operative technique.

Abstract
BACKGROUND The improved outcome after endoscopic surgery has been attributed to less surgical trauma. However, the underlying mechanisms are not fully understood, and direct effects of CO2 used for pneumoperitoneum, cellular acidification, and/or the lack of air contamination have been postulated to additionally modulate immune functions during endoscopic surgery. We investigated the effects of CO2 incubation, extracellular acidification, and air contamination on the inflammatory response of two distinct macrophage populations. METHODS R2 and NR 8383 rat macrophage cell lines were used. Interleukin-6 (IL-6) and nitric oxide after lipopolysaccharide (LPS) stimulation were determined in these sets of experiments: incubation in 100% CO2, 5% CO2, and room air for 2h; incubation at pH 7.4, 6.5, and 5.5 for 2 h in 5% CO2; and incubation in 100% CO2, 5% CO2 and room air in fixed pH 6.3. The extracellular pH was monitored during incubation. We determined the alteration of intracellular pH in cells subjected to extracellular acidification by fluorescence microscopy. RESULTS Extracellular pH decreased to 6.3 during 100% CO2 incubation. IL-6 release was reduced after CO2 incubation in NR 8383 cells and increased in R2 cells (p < 0.05). It was not altered by air incubation. Decreasing the extracellular pH to 6.5 mimicked the effects of CO2 and a decrease to 5.5 suppressed IL-6 release in both cell lines. In fixed pH at 6.3, CO2 and air incubation had no effect. CO2 and pH had no impact on nitric oxide release and vitality. Intracellular pH decreased with extracellular acidification without significant difference between the two cell lines. CONCLUSIONS A decrease in extracellular pH during incubation in CO2 differentially affects IL-6 release in macrophage subpopulations. This may explain contradictory results in the literature. Moreover, we demonstrated that air contamination does not affect macrophage cytokine release. The decrease in extracellular pH is the primary underlying mechanism of the alteration of macrophage cytokine release after CO2 incubation, and it appears that the ability to maintain intracellular pH is not determined by the effects of CO2 or extracellular acidification.

Insitu bioaugmentation of nitrification in the regeneration zone: practical application and experiences at full-scale plants. Abstract
Nitrification is the rate-limiting process in the design of activated sludge process. It is especially unstable during the winter season (when the temperature of activated sludge mixed liquor drops below 13 degrees C). It is therefore difficult to meet the ammonia effluent standards in winter. The common way to compensate for low nitrification rates at low temperatures is to increase sludge retention time (SRT). However, the increase of SRT is accompanied by negative factors such as elevated sludge concentration, higher sludge loading of secondary clarifiers, formation of unsettleable microflocs, etc. The low performance of nitrification at low temperatures can also be compensated for by enhancing the nitrification population in activated sludge. This paper describes such a method called bioaugmentation of nitrification in situ. This procedure takes place in a so-called regeneration tank, which is situated in the return activated sludge stream. The results of the operation of two wastewater treatment plants with regeneration zones are described in this paper, together with some economic evaluation of the bioaugmentation method.

Abstract
Arterial fibromuscular dysplasia (FMD) is a noninflammatory, nonatherosclerotic, occlusive condition of the systemic arteries, most frequently affecting renal arteries. Renal cell carcinoma (RCC) might be associated with arterial hypertension; however, there are no data in the literature regarding the relationship between RCC and associated renal artery changes. We analyzed a consecutive series of 57 (35 male and 22 female) patients aging from 35 to 79 years (mean 58.9 years) who underwent nephrectomy due to RCC in the year 2003. The patients had RCC measuring from 2 to 16 cm (mean 7.1 cm). Specimens were routinely fixed, embedded in paraffin, cut, and stained with hematoxylin and eosin, Mallory trichrome method, and orcein. Renal arteries of 26 patients (20 male, 6 female) showed no changes. In these patients, RCC measured 2.5-11 cm in largest diameter (mean 6.6 cm). In 24 patients (10 male, 14 female), renal arteries showed FMD. RCCs in these patients measured between 2 and 16 cm (mean 8.0 cm). Seven patients had atherosclerotic changes in renal arteries. In this series, FMD was found in a significant proportion of patients with RCC, mainly in women. The cause of such changes and their relationship with RCC and systemic hypertension should be further analyzed.

Abstract
The verrucae areae entorhinalis (VAE) are a characteristic feature of the human brain that occupy the anterior and posterolateral parts of the parahippocampal gyri and correspond to the islands of layer II neurons. We analyzed VAE in 60 neurologically normal subjects ranging from 23 to 85 years of age using a casting method. In 10 of these subjects the total number of neurons in the entorhinal islands was estimated stereologically using the optical fractionator. The number and surface area of VAE were higher in the left hemisphere compared with the right, and this leftward asymmetry was highly significant. Regression analysis showed a negative correlation between average VAE area and age in both hemispheres, representing a rate loss of about 800 microm2 per year. The estimated number of neurons obtained with the optical fractionator showed no significant difference between the left and the right hemisphere (468,000+/-144,000 vs. 405,000+/-117,000). There was a highly significant negative correlation between neuron numbers and age in both sides. In addition, clusters of small, undifferentiated layer II neurons ('heterotopias') were frequently observed in the rostral part of the entorhinal cortex in young and elderly adults. Layer II entorhinal neurons are among the first to show neurofibrillary changes during normal aging. The present data confirm the occurrence of age-related neuron loss in the entorhinal cortex. Considering the consistent projections from ipsilateral auditory association areas that, together with Broca's motor-speech area (Brodmann areas 44 and 45), show leftward asymmetry from early infancy (such as Brodmann area 22, planum temporale, and area 52 in the long insular gyrus), we speculate that functional lateralization of the human entorhinal cortex may be associated with specialization for memory processing related to language. Due to the dependence of hippocampal formation on entorhinal projections, this finding is also consistent with the greater capacity of the left hippocampus for verbal episodic memory.

Abstract
Tumour suppressor genes retinoblastoma (Rb1) and adenomatous polyposis coli (Apc) as well as the proliferating cell nuclear antigen (PCNA) are involved in embryonic development. The purpose of the present study was to investigate the expression of Rb1 protein, APC protein and PCNA during development of the human foetal testis. Qualitative analysis of their expression at the single-cell level was performed using immunohistochemistry on archive samples of the foetal testis (18-37 gestation week). Stereological parameters (volume density, absolute volume, numerical density, absolute number) were calculated for quantification of the overall expression of those proteins that were expressed frequently enough for such an analysis. PCNA was frequently expressed in nuclei of immature Sertoli cells and prospermatogonia and less frequently in surrounding peritubular (myoid) and interstitial cells. The pRb1 protein was present in nuclei of prospermatogonia and Sertoli cells but was absent from the interstitial tissue. APC protein was expressed in the cytoplasm of a very small number of prospermatogonia and interstitial (Leydig) cells. The overall expression of PCNA in all stages of development was higher than pRb1 expression.

Abstract
The objective of this study was to assess the effects of the addition of prostaglandin F2alpha (PGF2alpha) to semen, to increase reproductive performance in sows. Sows in 11 large production units, were inseminated (AI) either with PGF2alpha enriched fresh semen (group 1, n=1258) or with untreated fresh semen (group 2, n=1101). Conception rate, regular return to estrus, farrowing rate, subsequent total and live-born litter size, subsequent weaning to estrus intervals, pigs born and pigs weaned per sow per year were evaluated. Conception and farrowing rates, as well as regular returns to estrus were altered beneficially (P<0.001) with PGF2alpha supplemented semen. Subsequent total-born (P<0.06) and subsequent live-born (P<0.15) litter size, as well as subsequent weaning to estrus intervals (P<0.22), were not affected to the same extent. Total pigs born (P<0.05) and pigs weaned (P<0.04) per sow per year were increased by using PGF2alpha supplemented semen.
