Abstract
STUDY OBJECTIVE To assess the efficacy of an ECG-based method called thoracic impedance pneumography to reduce hypoxic events in endoscopy. DESIGN This was a single center, 1:1 randomized controlled trial. SETTING The trial was conducted during the placement of percutaneous endoscopic gastrostomy (PEG). PATIENTS 173 patients who underwent PEG placement were enrolled in the present trial. Indication was oncological in most patients (89%). 58% of patients were ASA class II and 42% of patients ASA class III. INTERVENTIONS Patients were randomized in the standard monitoring group (SM) with pulse oximetry and automatic blood pressure measurement or in the intervention group with additional thoracic impedance pneumography (TIM). Sedation was performed with propofol by gastroenterologists or trained nurses. MEASUREMENTS Hypoxic episodes defined as SpO2 < 90% for >15 s were the primary endpoint. Secondary endpoints were minimal SpO2, apnea >10s/>30s and incurred costs. MAIN RESULTS Additional use of thoracic impedance pneumography reduced hypoxic episodes (TIM: 31% vs SM: 49%; p = 0.016; OR 0.47; NNT 5.6) and elevated minimal SpO2 per procedure (TIM: 90.0% ± 8.9; SM: 84.0% ± 17.6; p = 0.007) significantly. Apnea events >10s and > 30s were significantly more often detected in TIM (43%; 7%) compared to SM (1%; 0%; p < 0.001; p = 0.014) resulting in a time advantage of 17 s before the occurrence of hypoxic events. As a result, adjustments of oxygen flow were significantly more often necessary in SM than in TIM (p = 0.034) and assisted ventilation was less often needed in TIM (2%) compared with SM (9%; p = 0.053). Calculated costs for the additional use of thoracic impedance pneumography were 0.13$ (0.12 €/0.11 £) per procedure. CONCLUSIONS Additional thoracic impedance pneumography reduced the quantity and extent of hypoxic events with less need of assisted ventilation. Supplemental costs per procedure were negligible. Abstract
The first measurement of the cross section for incoherent photonuclear production of J/ψ vector mesons as a function of the Mandelstam |t| variable is presented. The measurement was carried out with the ALICE detector at midrapidity, |y|<0.8, using ultraperipheral collisions of Pb nuclei at a center-of-mass energy per nucleon pair of sqrt[s_{NN}]=5.02 TeV. This rapidity interval corresponds to a Bjorken-x range (0.3-1.4)×10^{-3}. Cross sections are given in five |t| intervals in the range 0.04<|t|<1 GeV^{2} and compared to the predictions by different models. Models that ignore quantum fluctuations of the gluon density in the colliding hadron predict a |t| dependence of the cross section much steeper than in data. The inclusion of such fluctuations in the same models provides a better description of the data.

Abstract
Planar microelectrode arrays (MEAs) for - in vitro or in vivo - neuronal signal recordings lack the spatial resolution and sufficient signal-to-noise ratio (SNR) required for a detailed understanding of neural network function and synaptic plasticity. To overcome these limitations, a highly customizable three-dimensional (3D) printing process is used in combination with thin film technology and a self-aligned template-assisted electrochemical deposition process to fabricate 3D-printed-based MEAs on stiff or flexible substrates. Devices with design flexibility and physical robustness are shown for recording neural activity in different in vitro and in vivo applications, achieving high-aspect ratio 3D microelectrodes of up to 33:1. Here, MEAs successfully record neural activity in 3D neuronal cultures, retinal explants, and the cortex of living mice, thereby demonstrating the versatility of the 3D MEA while maintaining high-quality neural recordings. Customizable 3D MEAs provide unique opportunities to study neural activity under regular or various pathological conditions, both in vitro and in vivo, and contribute to the development of drug screening and neuromodulation systems that can accurately monitor the activity of large neural networks over time.

Abstract
Understanding the role of parton mass and Casimir color factors in the quantum chromodynamics parton shower represents an important step in characterizing the emission properties of heavy quarks. Recent experimental advances in jet substructure techniques have provided the opportunity to isolate and characterize gluon emissions from heavy quarks. In this Letter, the first direct experimental constraint on the charm-quark splitting function is presented, obtained via the measurement of the groomed shared momentum fraction of the first splitting in charm jets, tagged by a reconstructed D^{0} meson. The measurement is made in proton-proton collisions at sqrt[s]=13 TeV, in the low jet transverse-momentum interval of 15≤p_{T}^{jet ch}<30 GeV/c where the emission properties are sensitive to parton mass effects. In addition, the opening angle of the first perturbative emission of the charm quark, as well as the number of perturbative emissions it undergoes, is reported. Comparisons to measurements of an inclusive-jet sample show a steeper splitting function for charm quarks compared with gluons and light quarks. Charm quarks also undergo fewer perturbative emissions in the parton shower, with a reduced probability of large-angle emissions.

Abstract
Appropriate stallion semen handling is of great importance in equine artificial insemination (AI) industry. Optimal treatment of AI doses is aiming for best sperm preservation by excluding strong environmental influences and adding media that favour sperm survival. One method widely used in stallion sperm handling is the rotation of liquid-preserved semen samples on roller benches during storage. As previous studies in boars give rise to the fact that rotation should not be considered beneficial for spermatozoa anymore, the present study investigated the influence of continuous rotation of diluted stallion AI portions on sperm quality. Ejaculates (n = 15) were collected at a German AI centre and diluted with the two extenders EquiPlus and Gent (Minitüb GmbH) to a final concentration of 50 × 106 sperm/mL. Afterwards, samples were placed separately on roller benches at 5°C in the dark, obtaining a rotation frequency of 5 revolutions per minute (rpm) and 36 rpm for four consecutive days following a split-sample design. Both groups were analysed daily in comparison to a control group (0 rpm) with an extended spectrum of spermatological methods including computer-assisted sperm analysis and flow cytometry. Statistical analyses were based on the calculation of generalized linear mixed models for each sperm parameter. The research revealed a decrease in sperm quality parameters of rotated samples compared to non-rotated control groups, visible in total sperm motility (p < .001), decreased thermo-resistance (p < .01) and a drop in pH (p < .001). Interestingly, no differences (p > .05) were detected between rotation frequencies of 5 and 36 rpm. We conclude that the fertilizing capacity of stallion semen was negatively affected by rotation during storage in vitro, irrespective of the rotation frequency. Further studies need to investigate whether field fertility in horses is similarly affected by semen rotation on roller benches in vivo.

Abstract
The most precise measurements to date of the _{Λ}^{3}H lifetime τ and Λ separation energy B_{Λ} are obtained using the data sample of Pb-Pb collisions at sqrt[s_{NN}]=5.02 TeV collected by ALICE at the LHC. The _{Λ}^{3}H is reconstructed via its charged two-body mesonic decay channel (_{Λ}^{3}H→^{3}He+π^{-} and the charge-conjugate process). The measured values τ=[253±11(stat)±6(syst)] ps and B_{Λ}=[102±63(stat)±67(syst)] keV are compatible with predictions from effective field theories and confirm that the _{Λ}^{3}H structure is consistent with a weakly bound system.

Abstract
Since the stallion acrosome is very small compared to other species and cannot be properly assessed without additional staining, several labelling techniques were developed to facilitate its assessment. The aim of this study was to compare the Spermac stain (Minitüb GmbH) and a PNA/PSA/PI triple-staining detected by flow cytometry with regard to method agreement for detecting non-intact acrosomes within two different extenders. For this purpose, eighteen stallion ejaculates were split in half and diluted with the semen extenders EquiPlus or Gent (Minitüb GmbH) to a final concentration of 50 × 106 sperm/mL, respectively. Subsequently, 126 semen samples were stained with both methods between 4 and 240 h (mean: 63.8 ± 48.9 h) after semen collection. Calculated Intraclass correlation coefficients revealed excellent correlations between both methods for EquiPlus (r = .77, p < .001) and fair correlations for Gent (r = .49, p < .001). Interestingly, flow cytometry detected more non-intact acrosomes in EquiPlus than in Gent (p < .001), whereas the Spermac stain showed no differences (p = .902) between extenders. The poorer method agreement in Gent could be caused by egg yolk artefacts, which made interpretation difficult, so flow cytometry might be preferred. The differences in detected non-intact acrosomes between extenders highlighted the importance of establishing adapted laboratory protocols for different extender types in order to generate comparable results.

Abstract
The first measurement of event-by-event antideuteron number fluctuations in high energy heavy-ion collisions is presented. The measurements are carried out at midrapidity (|η|<0.8) as a function of collision centrality in Pb-Pb collisions at sqrt[s_{NN}]=5.02 TeV using the ALICE detector. A significant negative correlation between the produced antiprotons and antideuterons is observed in all collision centralities. The results are compared with a state-of-the-art coalescence calculation. While it describes the ratio of higher order cumulants of the antideuteron multiplicity distribution, it fails to describe quantitatively the magnitude of the correlation between antiproton and antideuteron production. On the other hand, thermal-statistical model calculations describe all the measured observables within uncertainties only for correlation volumes that are different with respect to those describing proton yields and a similar measurement of net-proton number fluctuations.

Abstract
The transverse-momentum (p_{T}) spectra and coalescence parameters B_{2} of (anti)deuterons are measured in p-p collisions at sqrt[s]=13 TeV for the first time in and out of jets. In this measurement, the direction of the leading particle with the highest p_{T} in the event (p_{T}^{lead}>5 GeV/c) is used as an approximation for the jet axis. The event is consequently divided into three azimuthal regions, and the jet signal is obtained as the difference between the toward region, that contains jet fragmentation products in addition to the underlying event (UE), and the transverse region, which is dominated by the UE. The coalescence parameter in the jet is found to be approximately a factor of 10 larger than that in the underlying event. This experimental observation is consistent with the coalescence picture and can be attributed to the smaller average phase-space distance between nucleons in the jet cone as compared with the underlying event. The results presented in this Letter are compared to predictions from a simple nucleon coalescence model, where the phase-space distributions of nucleons are generated using pythia8 with the Monash 2013 tuning, and to predictions from a deuteron production model based on ordinary nuclear reactions with parametrized energy-dependent cross sections tuned on data. The latter model is implemented in pythia8.3. Both models reproduce the observed large difference between in-jet and out-of-jet coalescence parameters, although the almost flat trend of the B_{2}^{Jet} is not reproduced by the models, which instead give a decreasing trend.

Abstract
The ICARUS collaboration employed the 760-ton T600 detector in a successful 3-year physics run at the underground LNGS laboratory, performing a sensitive search for LSND-like anomalous ν e appearance in the CERN Neutrino to Gran Sasso beam, which contributed to the constraints on the allowed neutrino oscillation parameters to a narrow region around 1 eV2 . After a significant overhaul at CERN, the T600 detector has been installed at Fermilab. In 2020 the cryogenic commissioning began with detector cool down, liquid argon filling and recirculation. ICARUS then started its operations collecting the first neutrino events from the booster neutrino beam (BNB) and the Neutrinos at the Main Injector (NuMI) beam off-axis, which were used to test the ICARUS event selection, reconstruction and analysis algorithms. ICARUS successfully completed its commissioning phase in June 2022. The first goal of the ICARUS data taking will be a study to either confirm or refute the claim by Neutrino-4 short-baseline reactor experiment. ICARUS will also perform measurement of neutrino cross sections with the NuMI beam and several Beyond Standard Model searches. After the first year of operations, ICARUS will search for evidence of sterile neutrinos jointly with the Short-Baseline Near Detector, within the Short-Baseline Neutrino program. In this paper, the main activities carried out during the overhauling and installation phases are highlighted. Preliminary technical results from the ICARUS commissioning data with the BNB and NuMI beams are presented both in terms of performance of all ICARUS subsystems and of capability to select and reconstruct neutrino events.

Abstract
The aim of this study was to develop prediction models for total sperm motility, morphological abnormalities and sperm output based on 1,551 ejaculate records of 58 Holstein bulls. The data was collected from September 2019 to November 2020 in a single artificial insemination (AI) center located in Eastern Germany. Factors considered for the prediction models include barn climate conditions, semen collector, number of false mounts, libido, semen collection frequency, breed and age (10-74 months). In this study, the prediction models Lasso, Group Lasso and Gradient Boosting were evaluated. The best model for each sperm quality parameter was chosen using cross validation. The models were estimated with five algorithms for sperm motility and sperm morphology and three algorithms for the number of total sperm per ejaculate (sperm output). For sperm motility and morphology a binary classification algorithm was applied, reaching an accuracy of over 80% for all models. For sperm output, no such classification was used and the only variable selected by all three algorithms was age. Furthermore, for sperm morphology, climate variables were frequently selected. Additionally, network diagrams from Group Lasso show the interdependencies between the major variable groups influencing sperm motility and morphology. In conclusion, the implementation of such prediction tools could help AI centers to optimize management factors and stabilize bull semen production in the future.

Abstract
This review is part of the Festschrift in honor of Dr. Duane Garner and provides an overview of current techniques for cooled storage of semen from livestock animals. The first part describes the current state of the art of liquid semen preservation in boars, bulls, and stallions, including the diluents, use of additives, processing, temperature, and cooling of semen. The species-specific physiology and varying extents of cold shock sensitivity are taken into consideration. In addition, factors influencing the quality of cooled-stored semen are discussed. Methods, trends, and the most recent advances for improving sperm quality during cold-temperature storage are highlighted and their respective advantages and disadvantages are contrasted. There has been much progress in recent years regarding cold-temperature storage of boar sperm and there is great potential for a large-scale use to replace the current 17 °C temperature storage regime and the associated use of antibiotics in the future. For stallion sperm, there is an opposite trend away from previous low-temperature storage towards storage at higher temperatures to increase sperm viability and longevity. In bulls, liquid storage of sperm is mostly used in the seasonal dairy production systems of New Zealand and Ireland, but with further research focusing on shelf-live elongation of liquid preserved sperm, there is potential for an application in breeding programs worldwide.

Background
Amongst cardiovascular interventions, pacemaker implantation procedure is one of the most hazardous in terms of radiation exposure due to its proximity and unprotected radiation exposure. In order to reduce radiation hazards, alternative imaging tool to guide pacemaker implantation should be sought. The aim of this study is to investigate the feasibility, efficacy, and safety of intracardiac echocardiographically (ICE) guided pacemaker implantation.
Methods
We retrospectively investigated pacemaker implantation with ICE guidance. ICE catheter was placed in right atrium (RA). Right ventricular (RV) lead was placed in RV apex within home view (low RA, 2-4 O'clock). Then RA lead was placed in RA appendage within mid RA 1-2 O'clock view. Fluoroscopy was used only for verifying lead redundancy (2 or 3 second duration before pocket closure). Other procedure steps were similarly performed as in conventional fluoroscopic method. Radiation dosage, patient safety, total procedure time, and lead parameters were assessed and compared.
Results
From June 2013 to March 2021, a total of 270 patients underwent pacemaker implantation either with ICE or with fluoroscopy. Amongst them, ICE guided implantation was attempted in 35 patients. In order to exclude potential bias caused by the operator's learning curve, we excluded early 5 cases out of ICE group. Radiation exposure was markedly decreased within ICE group (2.3±4.4 Gy cm2 in ICE group vs. 27.2±50.5 Gy cm2 in fluoroscopy group, P<0.001). The total procedure time and complication rate showed no significant difference between groups. In ICE group, atrial lead parameters were better than those of fluoroscopy group (impedance 454±57 Ω vs. 533±125 Ω, P<0.001).
Conclusion
In 30 patients with ICE guided pacemaker implantation, radiation exposure was markedly decreased without any trade-offs in terms of patients' safety and procedural success. Furthermore, operation team members' physical stress reduction also might be potentially guaranteed.

Background
The balance of stroke risk reduction and potential hemorrhagic risk associated with anti-thrombotic treatment (ATT) remain unclear in Korean atrial fibrillation (AF) patients with low to intermediate stroke risk, defined as non-gender CHA2DS2-VASc score 0–1.
Purpose
The net clinical benefit (NCB) analysis of ATT may be helpful to guide stroke prevention strategy in AF patients with non-gender CHA2DS2-VASc score 0–1.
Methods
This Korean multi-center cohort study retrospectively evaluated the clinical outcomes with single antiplatelet (SAPT), vitamin K antagonist (VKA), and non-vitamin K antagonist oral anticoagulant (NOAC) in non-gender CHA2DS2-VASc score 0–1 and further stratified by biomarker-based ABCD score (Age [≥60 years], B-type natriuretic peptide [BNP] or N-terminal pro-BNP [≥300 pg/ml], Creatinine clearance [<50 ml/min/1.73 m2], and Dimension of the left atrium [≥45 mm]). The primary outcome was the NCB of ATT including thromboembolic and major bleeding events.
Results
We included 2465 patients (56.2±9.5 years; female, 665 [27.0%]) followed-up for 4.0±2.8 years, of whom 661 (26.8%) were treated with SAPT; 423 (17.2%) with VKA; and 1040 (42.2%) with NOAC. In comparison with no treatment, only NOAC demonstrated a positive tendency for stroke prevention (NOAC, NCB 0.47, 95% confidence interval [CI] −0.40 to 2.10; SAPT, NCB −0.31, 95% CI −1.48 to 1.40; and VKA, NCB −1.26, 95% CI −2.97 to 0.67). With detailed risk stratification with ABCD score, NOAC showed a significant NCB for stroke prevention compared with SAPT and VKA (SAPT vs. NOAC, NCB 1.6, 95% CI 0.26–3.50; VKA vs. NOAC, NCB 1.96, 95% CI 0.47–4.16) in patients with ABCD score ≥1. ATT failed to show NCB in patients with truly low stroke risk defined as ABCD score=0.
Conclusion
Korean AF cohort with low to intermediate stroke risk indicates that, in comparison with no ATT, only ATT with NOAC showed marginal NCB. With further risk stratification by ABCD score, NOAC showed significant advantages over other ATTs (VKA or SAPT) in patients with ABCD ≥1.

This study verified the usefulness of ABCD score (Age [≥60 years], B-type natriuretic peptide [BNP] or N-terminal pro-BNP [≥300 pg/ml], Creatinine clearance [<50 ml/min/1.73 m2], and Dimension of the left atrium [≥45 mm]) for stroke risk stratification in non-gender CHA2DS2-VASc score 0–1.
Methods
This multi-center cohort study retrospectively analyzed AF patients with non-gender CHA2DS2-VASc score 0–1. The primary endpoint was the incidence of stroke with or without anti-thrombotic treatment (ATT). An ABCD score was also validated.
Results
Overall, 2694 patients (56.3±9.5 years; female, 726 [26.9%]) were followed-up for 4.0±2.8 years. The overall stroke rate was 0.84/100 person-years (P-Y), stratified as follows: 0.46/100P-Y for an ABCD score 0; 1.02/100P-Y for an ABCD score≥1. The ABCD score was superior to the non-gender CHA2DS2-VASc score in stroke risk stratification (C-index=0.618, P=0.015; net reclassification improvement=0.576, P=0.040; integrated differential improvement=0.033, P=0.066). ATT was prescribed in 2353 patients (86.5%), and the stroke rate was significantly lower in patients receiving non-vitamin K antagonist oral anticoagulant (NOAC) therapy and an ABCD score≥1 than in those without ATT (0.44/100P-Y versus 1.55/100 P-Y; hazard ratio=0.26, 95% confidence interval 0.11–0.63, P=0.003).
Conclusion
The biomarker-based ABCD score demonstrated improved stroke risk stratification in AF patients with non-gender CHA2DS2-VASc score 0–1. Furthermore, NOAC with an ABCD score≥1 was associated with significantly lower stroke rate in AF patients with a non-gender CHA2DS2-VASc score 0–1.

Abstract
The study of nuclei and antinuclei production has proven to be a powerful tool to investigate the formation mechanism of loosely bound states in high-energy hadronic collisions. The first measurement of the production of _{Λ}^{3}H in p-Pb collisions at sqrt[s_{NN}]=5.02 TeV is presented in this Letter. Its production yield measured in the rapidity interval -1<y<0 for the 40% highest-multiplicity p-Pb collisions is dN/dy=[6.3±1.8(stat)±1.2(syst)]×10^{-7}. The measurement is compared with the expectations of statistical hadronization and coalescence models, which describe the nucleosynthesis in hadronic collisions. These two models predict very different yields of the hypertriton in charged particle multiplicity environments relevant to small collision systems such as p-Pb, and therefore the measurement of dN/dy is crucial to distinguish between them. The precision of this measurement leads to the exclusion with a significance larger than 6.9σ of some configurations of the statistical hadronization model, thus constraining the theory behind the production of loosely bound states at hadron colliders.

Objective
Upper gastrointestinal cancers (UGC) are a leading cause of cancer related deaths. Brain metastases (BM) from gastric and esophageal cancer are rare and associated with a poor survival time. The precise incidence of BM for UGC is lacking.
Methods
We searched: “Gastric cancer OR Oesophageal Cancer AND Cerebral Metastasis” in Pubmed, EMBASE, Cochrane Library. Inclusion criteria were all studies with an incidence rate of BM from UGC cancer patients cohort. When the inclusion criteria were met, we extracted the following endpoints: year of publication, country of population, tumor localization, histology, number of brain lesion, synchronous or metachronous brain metastases, stage of the primary tumor, other localization of metastases, surgical treatment of the primary tumor, brain metastasis treatment (surgery, steatosic radiosurgery, whole brain radiation, gamma knife surgery), survival and follow-up.
Results
52 studies were included. The total number of patients with oesophageal tumor were described in 30 studies with 41636 patients from which 1234 patients (2.9%) had BM. 526 patients (63%) had an adenocarcinoma, 287 (34%) had a SCC and 17 (3%) other histology. BM was unique in 288 patients (50%) and multiples in 282 patients (50%). A combined radiotherapy and surgery was performed in 129 patients (17.9%). Surgical metastasectomy was performed in 172 patients (24.25%). Stereotaxic radiotherapy was delivered in 60 patients. (8.5%) A whole brain radiotherapy was performed in 265 patients (35.9%). Gamma knife surgery was performed in 43 patients (5.9%). Chemotherapy in 10 patients (1.6%) and no treatment in 43 patients. (5.9%). The median survival was reported from 3 month to 24 months. We identified 12 articles which matched the research criteria for gastric cancer with a total of 73.781 primary gastric tumors where 645 presented brain metastasis (0.87%). 159 patients had single BM (42.3%) compared to 217 patients with multiple BM (57.7%). We identified 434 adenocarcinoma which represent 81.1% of the brain metastasis. Median survival for patients with brain metastasis from gastric cancer was described from 1.3 month to 27 months.
Conclusion
Brain metastases from UGI cancer are rare and associated with a low survival. Multimodal treatment is the most described treatment strategy. More studies are required to assess the role of brain imaging in the initial staging of UGI cancer.

Abstract
The polarization of the Λ and Λ[over ¯] hyperons along the beam (z) direction, P_{z}, has been measured in Pb-Pb collisions at sqrt[s_{NN}]=5.02 TeV recorded with ALICE at the Large Hadron Collider (LHC). The main contribution to P_{z} comes from elliptic flow-induced vorticity and can be characterized by the second Fourier sine coefficient P_{z,s2}=⟨P_{z}sin(2φ-2Ψ_{2})⟩, where φ is the hyperon azimuthal emission angle and Ψ_{2} is the elliptic flow plane angle. We report the measurement of P_{z,s2} for different collision centralities and in the 30%-50% centrality interval as a function of the hyperon transverse momentum and rapidity. The P_{z,s2} is positive similarly as measured by the STAR Collaboration in Au-Au collisions at sqrt[s_{NN}]=200 GeV, with somewhat smaller amplitude in the semicentral collisions. This is the first experimental evidence of a nonzero hyperon P_{z} in Pb-Pb collisions at the LHC. The comparison of the measured P_{z,s2} with the hydrodynamic model calculations shows sensitivity to the competing contributions from thermal and the recently found shear-induced vorticity, as well as to whether the polarization is acquired at the quark-gluon plasma or the hadronic phase.

Abstract
This article presents groomed jet substructure measurements in pp and Pb-Pb collisions at sqrt[s_{NN}]=5.02 TeV with the ALICE detector. The soft drop grooming algorithm provides access to the hard parton splittings inside a jet by removing soft wide-angle radiation. We report the groomed jet momentum splitting fraction, z_{g}, and the (scaled) groomed jet radius, θ_{g}. Charged-particle jets are reconstructed at midrapidity using the anti-k_{T} algorithm with resolution parameters R=0.2 and R=0.4. In heavy-ion collisions, the large underlying event poses a challenge for the reconstruction of groomed jet observables, since fluctuations in the background can cause groomed parton splittings to be misidentified. By using strong grooming conditions to reduce this background, we report these observables fully corrected for detector effects and background fluctuations for the first time. A narrowing of the θ_{g} distribution in Pb-Pb collisions compared to pp collisions is seen, which provides direct evidence of the modification of the angular structure of jets in the quark-gluon plasma. No significant modification of the z_{g} distribution in Pb-Pb collisions compared to pp collisions is observed. These results are compared with a variety of theoretical models of jet quenching, and provide constraints on jet energy-loss mechanisms and coherence effects in the quark-gluon plasma.

Abstract
The p_{T}-differential production cross sections of prompt D^{0}, Λ_{c}^{+}, and Σ_{c}^{0,++}(2455) charmed hadrons are measured at midrapidity (|y|<0.5) in pp collisions at sqrt[s]=13 TeV. This is the first measurement of Σ_{c}^{0,++} production in hadronic collisions. Assuming the same production yield for the three Σ_{c}^{0,+,++} isospin states, the baryon-to-meson cross section ratios Σ_{c}^{0,+,++}/D^{0} and Λ_{c}^{+}/D^{0} are calculated in the transverse momentum (p_{T}) intervals 2<p_{T}<12 and 1<p_{T}<24 GeV/c. Values significantly larger than in e^{+}e^{-} collisions are observed, indicating for the first time that baryon enhancement in hadronic collisions also extends to the Σ_{c}. The feed-down contribution to Λ_{c}^{+} production from Σ_{c}^{0,+,++} is also reported and is found to be larger than in e^{+}e^{-} collisions. The data are compared with predictions from event generators and other phenomenological models, providing a sensitive test of the different charm-hadronization mechanisms implemented in the models.

Abstract
Resident cardiac macrophages (rcMACs) are among the most abundant immune cells in the heart. Plasticity and activation are hallmarks of rcMACs in response to changes in the microenvironment, which is essential for in vitro experimentation. The in vivo investigation is confounded by the infiltration of other cells hindering direct studies of rcMACs. As a tool to investigate rcMACs, we applied the ex vivo model of living myocardial slices (LMS). LMS are ultrathin ex vivo multicellular cardiac preparations in which the circulatory network is interrupted. The absence of infiltration in this model enables the investigation of the rcMACs response to immunomodulatory and mechanical stimulations. Such conditions were generated by applying interferon-gamma (IFN-γ) or interleukine-4 (IL-4) and altering the preload of cultured LMS, respectively. The immunomodulatory stimulation of the LMS induced alterations of the gene expression pattern without affecting tissue contractility. Following 24 h culture, low input RNA sequencing of rcMACs isolated from LMS was used for gene ontology analysis. Reducing the tissue stretch (unloading) of LMS altered the gene ontology clusters of isolated rcMACs with intermediate semantic similarity to IFN-γ triggered reaction. Through the overlap of genes affected by IFN-γ and unloading, we identified Allograft inflammatory factor 1 (AIF-1) as a potential marker gene for inflammation of rcMACs as significantly altered in whole immunomodulated LMS. MicroRNAs associated with the transcriptomic changes of rcMACs in unloaded LMS were identified in silico. Here, we demonstrate the approach of LMS to understand load-triggered cardiac inflammation and, thus, identify potential translationally important therapeutic targets.

Abstract
Sirtuin2 (Sirt2) with its NAD+-dependent deacetylase and defatty-acylase activities plays a central role in the regulation of specific cellular functions. Dysregulation of Sirt2 activity has been associated with the pathogenesis of many diseases, thus making Sirt2 a promising target for pharmaceutical intervention. Herein, we present new high affinity Sirt2 selective Sirtuin-Rearranging Ligands (SirReals) that inhibit both Sirt2-dependent deacetylation and defatty-acylation in vitro and in cells. We show that simultaneous inhibition of both Sirt2 activities results in strongly reduced levels of the oncoprotein c-Myc and an inhibition of cancer cell migration. Furthermore, we describe the development of a NanoBRET-based assay for Sirt2, thereby providing a method to study cellular target engagement for Sirt2 in a straightforward and accurately quantifiable manner. Applying this assay, we could confirm cellular Sirt2 binding of our new Sirt2 inhibitors and correlate their anticancer effects with their cellular target engagement. Sirt2 inhibitors that show simultaneous inhibition of Sirt2 deacetylase and defatty-acylase activity block prostate cancer cell migration and their target engagement is shown by a newly developed NanoBRET assay.![]()

Abstract
The p_{T}-differential cross sections of prompt charm-strange baryons Ξ_{c}^{0} and Ξ_{c}^{+} were measured at midrapidity (|y|<0.5) in proton-proton (pp) collisions at a center-of-mass energy sqrt[s]=13 TeV with the ALICE detector at the LHC. The Ξ_{c}^{0} baryon was reconstructed via both the semileptonic decay (Ξ^{-}e^{+}ν_{e}) and the hadronic decay (Ξ^{-}π^{+}) channels. The Ξ_{c}^{+} baryon was reconstructed via the hadronic decay (Ξ^{-}π^{+}π^{+}) channel. The branching-fraction ratio BR(Ξ_{c}^{0}→Ξ^{-}e^{+}ν_{e})/BR(Ξ_{c}^{0}→Ξ^{-}π^{+})=1.38±0.14(stat)±0.22(syst) was measured with a total uncertainty reduced by a factor of about 3 with respect to the current world average reported by the Particle Data Group. The transverse momentum (p_{T}) dependence of the Ξ_{c}^{0}- and Ξ_{c}^{+}-baryon production relative to the D^{0} meson and to the Σ_{c}^{0,+,++}- and Λ_{c}^{+}-baryon production are reported. The baryon-to-meson ratio increases toward low p_{T} up to a value of approximately 0.3. The measurements are compared with various models that take different hadronization mechanisms into consideration. The results provide stringent constraints to these theoretical calculations and additional evidence that different processes are involved in charm hadronization in electron-positron (e^{+}e^{-}) and hadronic collisions.

The prompt production of the charm baryon Λ_{c}^{+} and the Λ_{c}^{+}/D^{0} production ratios were measured at midrapidity with the ALICE detector in pp and p-Pb collisions at sqrt[s_{NN}]=5.02 TeV. These new measurements show a clear decrease of the Λ_{c}^{+}/D^{0} ratio with increasing transverse momentum (p_{T}) in both collision systems in the range 2<p_{T}<12 GeV/c, exhibiting similarities with the light-flavor baryon-to-meson ratios p/π and Λ/K_{S}^{0}. At low p_{T}, predictions that include additional color-reconnection mechanisms beyond the leading-color approximation, assume the existence of additional higher-mass charm-baryon states, or include hadronization via coalescence can describe the data, while predictions driven by charm-quark fragmentation processes measured in e^{+}e^{-} and e^{-}p collisions significantly underestimate the data. The results presented in this Letter provide significant evidence that the established assumption of universality (colliding-system independence) of parton-to-hadron fragmentation is not sufficient to describe charm-baryon production in hadronic collisions at LHC energies.

Abstract
This Letter presents the first experimental evidence of the attractive strong interaction between a proton and a ϕ meson. The result is obtained from two-particle correlations of combined p-ϕ⊕ p[over ¯]-ϕ pairs measured in high-multiplicity pp collisions at sqrt[s]=13 TeV by the ALICE Collaboration. The spin-averaged scattering length and effective range of the p-ϕ interaction are extracted from the fully corrected correlation function employing the Lednický-Lyuboshits approach. In particular, the imaginary part of the scattering length vanishes within uncertainties, indicating that inelastic processes do not play a prominent role for the p-ϕ interaction. These data demonstrate that the interaction is dominated by elastic p-ϕ scattering. Furthermore, an analysis employing phenomenological Gaussian- and Yukawa-type potentials is conducted. Under the assumption of the latter, the N-ϕ coupling constant is found to be g_{N-ϕ}=0.14±0.03(stat)±0.02(syst). This work provides valuable experimental input to accomplish a self-consistent description of the N-ϕ interaction, which is particularly relevant for the more fundamental studies on partial restoration of chiral symmetry in nuclear medium.

Background
Despite the well-validated benefit of physical activity on various health outcomes, little is known about its effect on lower respiratory tract infection. We explored the dose-response associations between physical activity and lower respiratory tract infection outcomes in patients with cardiovascular disease.
Methods
Using the Korean National Health Insurance data, we identified more than 1 million individuals with cardiovascular diseases who had data on self-reported physical activity (baseline 2009–2012). Participants were followed up until 2018–2019 regarding the risk of death or hospitalization due to lower respiratory tract infection according to their physical activity level.
Results
Age- and sex-adjusted hazard ratios (95% confidence interval) for lower respiratory tract infection mortality were 1.00 (reference), 0.70 (0.67–0.74), 0.63 (0.59–0.66), 0.48 (0.43–0.53), and 0.51 (0.45–0.56) for those engaging in physical activity of 0, <500, 500–999, 1000–1499, and ≥1500 MET min/week, respectively. This was similarly applied to hospitalization due to lower respiratory tract infection. Generally, the association was stronger in the elderly population than in the younger population. Restricted cubic spline curve showed a non-linear association, that is, gradual risk reduction with a steeper slope between 0 and 500 MET min/week, reaching a plateau for 1500–1800 MET/min, and the curve flattened out thereafter.
Conclusions
In patients with cardiovascular disease, engaging in even low level of physical activity was associated decreased risk for lower respiratory tract infection outcomes and incremental risk reduction was shown with an increasing physical activity.

Abstract
EOMES and T-BET are related T-box transcription factors that control natural killer (NK) cell development. Here we demonstrate that EOMES and T-BET regulate largely distinct gene sets during this process. EOMES is dominantly expressed in immature NK cells and drives early lineage specification by inducing hallmark receptors and functions. By contrast, T-BET is dominant in mature NK cells, where it induces responsiveness to IL-12 and represses the cell cycle, likely through transcriptional repressors. Regardless, many genes with distinct functions are co-regulated by the two transcription factors. By generating two gene-modified mice facilitating chromatin immunoprecipitation of endogenous EOMES and T-BET, we show a strong overlap in their DNA binding targets, as well as extensive epigenetic changes during NK cell differentiation. Our data thus suggest that EOMES and T-BET may distinctly govern, via differential expression and co-factors recruitment, NK cell maturation by inserting partially overlapping epigenetic regulations.

Abstract
The event-by-event correlations between three flow amplitudes are measured for the first time in Pb-Pb collisions, using higher-order symmetric cumulants. We find that different three-harmonic correlations develop during the collective evolution of the medium when compared to correlations that exist in the initial state. These new results cannot be interpreted in terms of previous lower-order flow measurements since contributions from two-harmonic correlations are explicitly removed in the new observables. A comparison to Monte Carlo simulations provides new and independent constraints for the initial conditions and system properties of nuclear matter created in heavy-ion collisions.

Abstract
A measurement of dielectron production in proton-proton (pp) collisions at sqrt[s]=13 TeV, recorded with the ALICE detector at the CERN LHC, is presented in this Letter. The data set was recorded with a reduced magnetic solenoid field. This enables the investigation of a kinematic domain at low dielectron (ee) invariant mass m_{ee} and pair transverse momentum p_{T,ee} that was previously inaccessible at the LHC. The cross section for dielectron production is studied as a function of m_{ee}, p_{T,ee}, and event multiplicity dN_{ch}/dη. The expected dielectron rate from hadron decays, called hadronic cocktail, utilizes a parametrization of the measured η/π^{0} ratio in pp and proton-nucleus collisions, assuming that this ratio shows no strong dependence on collision energy at low transverse momentum. Comparison of the measured dielectron yield to the hadronic cocktail at 0.15<m_{ee}<0.6 GeV/c^{2} and for p_{T,ee}<0.4 GeV/c indicates an enhancement of soft dielectrons, reminiscent of the "anomalous" soft-photon and soft-dilepton excess in hadron-hadron collisions reported by several experiments under different experimental conditions. The enhancement factor over the hadronic cocktail amounts to 1.61±0.13(stat)±0.17(syst,data)±0.34(syst,cocktail) in the ALICE acceptance. Acceptance-corrected excess spectra in m_{ee} and p_{T,ee} are extracted and compared with calculations of dielectron production from hadronic bremsstrahlung and thermal radiation within a hadronic many-body approach.

Abstract
OBJECTIVES To investigate resistance-associated substitutions (RASs) as well as retreatment efficacies in a large cohort of European patients with failure of glecaprevir/pibrentasvir. METHODS Patients were identified from three European Resistance Reference centres in Spain, Italy and Germany. Sequencing of NS3, NS5A and NS5B was conducted and substitutions associated with resistance to direct antiviral agents were analysed. Clinical and virological parameters were documented retrospectively and retreatment efficacies were evaluated. RESULTS We evaluated 90 glecaprevir/pibrentasvir failures [3a (n = 36), 1a (n = 23), 2a/2c (n = 20), 1b (n = 10) and 4d (n = 1)]. Ten patients were cirrhotic, two had previous exposure to PEG-interferon and seven were coinfected with HIV; 80 had been treated for 8 weeks. Overall, 31 patients (34.4%) failed glecaprevir/pibrentasvir without any NS3 or NS5A RASs, 62.4% (53/85) showed RASs in NS5A, 15.6% (13/83) in NS3 and 10% (9/90) in both NS5A and NS3. Infection with HCV genotypes 1a and 3a was associated with a higher prevalence of NS5A RASs. Patients harbouring two (n = 34) or more (n = 8) RASs in NS5A were frequent. Retreatment was initiated in 56 patients, almost all (n = 52) with sofosbuvir/velpatasvir/voxilaprevir. The overall sustained virological response rate was 97.8% in patients with end-of-follow-up data available. CONCLUSIONS One-third of patients failed glecaprevir/pibrentasvir without resistance. RASs in NS5A were more prevalent than in NS3 and were frequently observed as dual and triple combination patterns, with a high impact on NS5A inhibitor activity, particularly in genotypes 1a and 3a. Retreatment of glecaprevir/pibrentasvir failures with sofosbuvir/velpatasvir/voxilaprevir achieved viral suppression across all genotypes.

Abstract
The elliptic flow of electrons from beauty hadron decays at midrapidity (|y|<0.8) is measured in Pb-Pb collisions at sqrt[s_{NN}]=5.02 TeV with the ALICE detector at the LHC. The azimuthal distribution of the particles produced in the collisions can be parametrized with a Fourier expansion, in which the second harmonic coefficient represents the elliptic flow, v_{2}. The v_{2} coefficient of electrons from beauty hadron decays is measured for the first time in the transverse momentum (p_{T}) range 1.3-6 GeV/c in the centrality class 30%-50%. The measurement of electrons from beauty-hadron decays exploits their larger mean proper decay length cτ≈500 μm compared to that of charm hadrons and most of the other background sources. The v_{2} of electrons from beauty hadron decays at midrapidity is found to be positive with a significance of 3.75 σ. The results provide insights into the degree of thermalization of beauty quarks in the medium. A model assuming full thermalization of beauty quarks is strongly disfavored by the measurement at high p_{T}, but is in agreement with the results at low p_{T}. Transport models including substantial interactions of beauty quarks with an expanding strongly interacting medium describe the measurement within uncertainties.

Abstract
Hepatitis C virus infection is causing chronic liver disease, cirrhosis, and hepatocellular carcinoma. By combining direct-acting antivirals (DAAs), high sustained virologic response rates (SVRs) can be achieved. Resistance-associated substitutions (RASs) are commonly observed after DAA failure, and especially nonstructural protein 5A (NS5A) RASs may impact retreatment options.1-3 Data on retreatment of DAA failure patients using first-generation DAAs are limited.4-7 Recently, a second-generation protease- and NS5A-inhibitor plus sofosbuvir (voxilaprevir/velpatasvir/sofosbuvir [VOX/VEL/SOF]) was approved for retreatment after DAA failure.8 However, this and other second-generation regimens are not available in many resource-limited countries or are not reimbursed by regular insurance, and recommendations regarding the selection of retreatment regimens using first-generation DAAs are very important. This study aimed to analyze patients who were re-treated with first-generation DAAs after failure of a DAA combination therapy.

Abstract
Resident cardiac macrophages (rcMacs) are integral components of the myocardium where they have key roles for tissue homeostasis and in response to inflammation, tissue injury and remodelling. In this review, we summarize the current knowledge and limitations associated with the rcMacs studies. We describe their specific role and contribution in various processes such as electrical conduction, efferocytosis, inflammation, tissue development, remodelling and regeneration in both the healthy and the disease state. We also outline research challenges and technical complications associated with rcMac research. Recent technological developments and contemporary immunological techniques are now offering new opportunities to investigate the separate contribution of rcMac in respect to recruited monocytes and other cardiac cells. Finally, we discuss new therapeutic strategies, such as drugs or non-coding RNAs, which can influence rcMac phenotype and their response to inflammation. These novel approaches will allow for a deeper understanding of this cardiac endogenous cell type and might lead to the development of more specific and effective therapeutic strategies to boost the heart's intrinsic reparative capacity.

Background
We aimed to elucidate whether synergic combined association of body mass index (BMI) and fasting blood glucose (FBG) on mortality exist and to identify FBS-BMI subgroups with higher mortality according to sex and age.
Methods
A total of 15,149,275 Korean adults participated in health examinations during 2003–2006 and were followed up until December 2018. Hazard ratios (HRs) of 40 BMI-FBG combined groups for mortality were assessed by Cox proportional hazards models.
Results
During mean 13.7 years of follow-up, 1,213,401 individuals died. The association between hyperglycemia and mortality was stronger in leaner than more obese individuals and these effects were more prominent in younger than older adults. Compared with overweight (BMI 25–27.4kg/m2) normoglycemic (FBG 80–94mg/dL), age, sex-adjusted HRs of leanest (BMI <20kg/m2) normoglycemic, overweight diabetes (FBG ≥180mg/dL), and leanest diabetes were 1.66, 2.17, and 4.77, respectively. Corresponding HRs in those aged 18–44 years were 1.29, 2.59, and 11.18, respectively, while corresponding HRs in those aged 75–99 years were 1.56, 1.72, and 2.87, respectively (Figure 1). The interpretation of BMI-FBG subgroups associated with higher mortality was not straightforward. For example, prediabetes (FBG 110–125 mg/dL) with BMI 20–22.4 kg/m2 had similar or higher mortality than low diabetes (FBG 126–179 mg/dL) with BMI ≥22.5 kg/m2. In non-diabetic women aged <45 years, BMI ≥27.5 kg/m2 was associated with the highest mortality, whereas the leanest had the worst mortality in each given FBG level in other age-sex groups.
Conclusions
Leanness and hyperglycemia interact together to increase mortality supra-multiplicatively, especially in younger adults, while complex interaction of BMI, FBG, sex and age on mortality exist.

Background
Obese women are overrepresented in heart failure with preserved ejection fraction (HFpEF). We sought to 1) characterize the sex-specific effect of obesity on exercise capacity and diastolic function and 2) identify the determinant of exercise intolerance and diastolic dysfunction in each sex.
Methods
A total of 736 healthy participants, who underwent comprehensive health check-ups, were included in this study. All individuals were divided into 4 groups according to sex and presence of obesity (BMI ≥23kg/m2).
Results
The exercise capacity (peak VO2) was greatly affected by sex, which was worse in women. In addition, exercise capacity significantly differed according to obesity in women (23.5±7.3 vs. 21.3±5.4ml/kg/min, p<0.05), whereas there was no such difference in men (28.2±7.8 vs. 28.0±6.6ml/kg/min, p>0.10). Overall, women had an elevated E/e' ratio. Even non-obese women had a similar E/e' ratio to obese men (8.2±1.8 vs. 8.4±2.1, p>0.10) and obese women exhibited the highest E/e' ratio over any other group (Fig 1). Among 5 parameters (aging, obesity, elevated blood pressure, elevated heart rate, and elevated fasting glucose), obesity was a significant determinant of exercise intolerance for women, but not for men (women, HR 1.87 [95% CI 1.12–3.11], p=0.016; men, HR 1.22 [95% CI 0.63–2.38], p=0.558). Furthermore, obesity confers a greater risk of diastolic dysfunction in women than men (women, HR 4.03 [95% CI 2.24–7.25], p<0.001; men, HR 2.82 [95% CI 1.37–5.79], p=0.005).
Conclusions
Women had a more deleterious effect on exercise capacity and diastolic function in response to obesity than men. These sex-specific effects might explain the female predominance of HFpEF, particularly for the obese phenotype.

Abstract
In this Letter, we report the first measurement of the inelastic cross section for antideuteron-nucleus interactions at low particle momenta, covering a range of 0.3≤p<4 GeV/c. The measurement is carried out using p-Pb collisions at a center-of-mass energy per nucleon-nucleon pair of sqrt[s_{NN}]=5.02 TeV, recorded with the ALICE detector at the CERN LHC and utilizing the detector material as an absorber for antideuterons and antiprotons. The extracted raw primary antiparticle-to-particle ratios are compared to the results from detailed ALICE simulations based on the geant4 toolkit for the propagation of (anti)particles through the detector material. The analysis of the raw primary (anti)proton spectra serves as a benchmark for this study, since their hadronic interaction cross sections are well constrained experimentally. The first measurement of the inelastic cross section for antideuteron-nucleus interactions averaged over the ALICE detector material with atomic mass numbers ⟨A⟩=17.4 and 31.8 is obtained. The measured inelastic cross section points to a possible excess with respect to the Glauber model parametrization used in geant4 in the lowest momentum interval of 0.3≤p<0.47 GeV/c up to a factor 2.1. This result is relevant for the understanding of antimatter propagation and the contributions to antinuclei production from cosmic ray interactions within the interstellar medium. In addition, the momentum range covered by this measurement is of particular importance to evaluate signal predictions for indirect dark-matter searches.

Abstract
New ways of predicting sperm quality and output performance in young artificial insemination (AI) boars are important for breeding companies to ensure that the pubertal boars delivered to the AI studs have a high chance of meeting minimum quality standards to be used for insemination and therewith dissemination of desirable characteristics. The aim of the current study was to characterize the testicular development of 218 pubertal Piétrain boars (Line 408, Pig Improvement Company) to identify traits with predictable characteristics relative to their sperm quality as an adult AI boar. Scrotum, testes and epididymis were examined ultrasonographically at day (d) 100 (on-test) and 170 (off-test) followed by a computer-assisted grayscale analysis (GSA). Over the test period, paired testicular volume increased 7.3-fold from 22.7 ± 10.8 cm3 to 166.6 ± 62.2 cm3. The right testis was significantly (P = 0.014) larger than the left one at the off-test. Based on the sperm quality (ejaculate volume, sperm concentration, total sperm number, morphologically abnormal sperm and total sperm motility at day 3 of semen storage), 82.11% (n = 179) of the boars were classified as "productive" boars. These boars had a significantly (P = 0.039) larger paired testicular volume than "non-productive" boars (45.9 ± 19.9 cm3vs. 38.5 ± 12.6 cm3) at the on-test. For the right testis at on-test, significant differences for the standard deviation of mean gray value (P = 0.022), area under the curve (P = 0.004) and mean gradient value (GRAD, P = 0.030) regarding the future sperm production capacity (SPC) were shown. At off-test, there was a significant difference for minimum gray value (MIN GV, P = 0.003) and mean gray value (P = 0.001) related to SPC. To find SPC related cut-off values for GSA data, a two segmental non-linear regression analysis was carried out indicating breakpoints for GRAD ≥12 and MIN GV ≥ 40 for boars with low SPC. Off-test boars with MIN GV ≥ 40 showed a 2.4 higher risk to display low SPC (Odds ratio = 2.4 [1.1, 5.4]; P = 0.024). The results may enable breeding companies to include new sperm quality associated traits in their boar testing and selection programs.

Abstract
Several domestic and wildlife species have been shown to possess antibacterial defenses in their ejaculate most probably in order to increase the fertilization success and protect against sexually transmitted pathogens. However, very little is known about the consequences and factors influencing the differences within and between species as far as ejaculate-associated immunity. In the present study, we have analyzed bacterial killing activity (BKA) against Escherichia (E.) coli and Staphylococcus (S.) aureus as well as lysozyme concentrations (LC) in seminal plasma from 60 Fleckvieh bulls. Further, sperm quality and its association with BKA and LC were determined. Twenty percent of the individuals displayed BKA against both bacteria, 78.3% against S. aureus only and 1.7% of the bulls did not indicate any BKA in seminal plasma. No bulls with seminal plasma BKA only against E. coli were identified; implying that 80.0% of the tested bulls had no ejaculate associated defense mechanisms against this gram-negative bacterial species in place. This is in striking contrast to results of Pietrain boars within our previous study, in which 42.8% of the 119 boars expressed an antibacterial activity against E. coli in seminal plasma, 10.9% amongst them with BKA against E. coli only. LC was higher in the bull group with BKA against both bacteria (1.2 ± 0.6 μg/mL) compared to the group with BKA against S. aureus only (0.7 ± 0.3 μg/mL), but - if calculated over all individuals - LC in bulls (0.8 ± 0.4 μg/mL) was lower compared to boars (2.4 ± 1.2 μg/mL). LC showed positive correlations to the age of the bulls and sperm quality as well as a negative relation to bacterial load in raw semen although the highest bacterial contamination was found in animals with seminal plasma BKA against both strains. We discuss the obtained results with regards to possible differences within the microbiome of female and male genital tracts and the reproductive strategies (vaginal vs. uterine depositors) in these two livestock species. Besides identifying the responsible molecules, future phylogenetically controlled comparative studies are needed for a better understanding of the evolution of species differences in ejaculate-associated antibacterial defenses.

Abstract
BACKGROUND The effects of subinhibitory concentrations (sub-MICs) of antibacterial agents on the biofilm-forming ability of Staphylococcus aureus require further study. AIM To investigate the effects of sub-MICs of chlorhexidine and mupirocin on biofilm formation in clinical meticillin-resistant Staphylococcus aureus (MRSA) isolates. METHODS MRSA isolates were collected from patients with bloodstream infections at a tertiary care hospital. The basal level of biofilm formation and biofilm induction by sub-MICs of chlorhexidine and mupirocin were evaluated by measuring biofilm mass stained with Crystal Violet. FINDINGS Of the 112 MRSA isolates tested, 63 (56.3%) and 44 (39.3%) belonged to sequence type (ST)5 and ST72 lineages, respectively, which are the predominant healthcare- and community-associated clones in South Korea. ST5 isolates were more likely to have chlorhexidine MIC ≥4 (73.0% vs 29.5%), resistance to mupirocin (23.8% vs 0%), agr dysfunction (73.0% vs 9.1%), and qacA/B gene (58.7% vs 2.3%) compared to ST72 isolates. The basal level of biofilm formation ability was frequently stronger in ST72 isolates compared to ST5 isolates (77.3% vs 12.7%). Sub-MICs of chlorhexidine and mupirocin promoted biofilm formation in 56.3% and 53.6%, respectively, of all isolates. Biofilm induction was more prevalent in ST5 isolates (85.7% for chlorhexidine, 69.8% for mupirocin) than in ST72 isolates (15.9% for chlorhexidine, 27.3% for mupirocin). CONCLUSION Sub-MICs of chlorhexidine and mupirocin promoted biofilm formation in half of the clinical MRSA isolates. Our results suggest that ST5 MRSA biofilm can be induced together with some other bacterial virulent factors following exposure to chlorhexidine, which might confer a survival advantage to this clone in the healthcare environment.
