The Impact of Ar or N2 Atmosphere on the Structure of Bi-Fe-Carbon Xerogel Based Composites as Electrode Material for Detection of Pb2+ and H2O2

In this study, bismuth- and iron-embedded carbon xerogels (XG) were obtained using a modified resorcinol formaldehyde sol-gel synthesis method followed by additional enrichment with iron content. Pyrolysis treatment was performed at elevated temperatures under Ar or N2 atmosphere to obtain nanocomposites with different reduction yields (XGAr or XGN). The interest was focused on investigating the extent to which changes in the pyrolysis atmosphere of these nanocomposites impact the structure, morphology, and electrical properties of the material and consequently affect the electroanalytical performance. The structural and morphological particularities derived from X-ray diffraction (XRD), Raman spectroscopy, scanning electron microscopy (SEM), transmission electron microscopy (TEM), and X-ray photoelectron spectroscopy (XPS) measurements revealed the formation of the nanocomposite phases, mostly metal/oxide components. The achieved performances for the two modified electrodes based on XG treated under Ar or N2 atmosphere clearly differ, as evidenced by the electroanalytical parameters determined from the detection of heavy metal cations (Pb2+) or the use of the square wave voltammetry (SWV) technique, biomarkers (H2O2), or amperometry. By correlating the differences obtained from electroanalytical measurements with those derived from morphological, structural, and surface data, a few utmost important aspects were identified. Pyrolysis under Ar atmosphere favors a significant increase in the α-Fe2O3 amount and H2O2 detection performance (sensitivity of 0.9 A/M and limit of detection of 0.17 μM) in comparison with pyrolysis under N2 (sensitivity of 0.5 A/M and limit of detection of 0.36 μM), while pyrolysis under N2 atmosphere leads to an increase in the metallic Bi amount and Pb2+ detection performance (sensitivity of 8.44 × 103 A/M and limit of detection of 33.05 pM) in comparison with pyrolysis under Ar (sensitivity of 6.47·103 A/M and limit of detection of 46.37 pM).

Dual-emissive solid-state histidine-stabilized gold nanoclusters for applications in white-light generation

The majority of present-day white-light emitting devices (WLEDs) are built upon the use of rare-earth elements, which have a short supply, are expensive and can become extremely toxic. Thus, in this work, we synthesized an eco-friendly, efficient and cheap white-light emitting material (WLEM) based on solid-state histidine-stabilized gold nanoclusters (His-AuNCs), obtained through the lyophilization of microwave-synthesized photoluminescent His-AuNCs. Their morphological and structural characterization was followed by thorough evaluation of their intrinsic solid-state photoluminescence properties via steady-state and time-resolved fluorescence spectroscopy and microscopy, at multiple excitation wavelengths. A white-light emission was observed under UV light excitation due to the two-band broad emission, with maxima at 475 and 520 nm, covering a large area of the visible spectrum. In order to evaluate the purity of the white-light emission we calculated the chromaticity coordinates, at different wavelengths, and displayed them on a CIE (Commision Internationale d'Eclairage) diagram. An excellent value of (0.36, 0.33) was found at 420 nm excitation, which falls within the range of pure white-light emission. Moreover, the His-AuNCs show great photo- and thermo-stability, thus proving their ability to perform as a reliable WLEM with potential use in the development of eco-friendly WLEDs.

The evaluation of the osteopromoting capabilities of composites based on biopolymers and gold/silver nanoparticles doped bioactive glasses on an experimental rat bone defect

The most important concept behind using bone scaffolds is the biocompatibility of the material to avoid a local inflammatory response and must have the following properties: osteoinduction, osteoconductivity, angiogenesis, and mechanical support for cell growth. Gold nanoparticles/gold and silver nanoparticles -containing bioactive glasses in biopolymer composites have been used to enhance bone regeneration. These composites were tested in vitro on fibroblast and osteoblast cell lines using MTT tests, immunofluorescence, scanning electron microscopy analysis, and in vivo in an experimental bone defect in Sprague-Dawley rats. Both composites promoted adequate biological effects on human fibroblastic BJ (CRL 2522TM) cell lines and human osteoblastic cells isolated from the human patella in terms of cell proliferation, morphology, migration, and attachment. Most importantly, they did not cause cellular apoptosis and necrosis. According to the histological and immunohistochemical results, both composites were osteoinductive and promoted new bone formation at 60 days. Evidence from this study suggests that the small amount of silver content does not influence negatively the in vitro or in vivo results. In addition, we obtained accurate results proving that the existence of apatite layer and proteins on the surface of the recovered composite, supports the validity of in vitro bioactivity research.

Rapid Synthesis Method of Ag3PO4 as Reusable Photocatalytically Active Semiconductor

The widespread use of Ag₃PO₄ is not surprising when considering its higher photostability compared to other silver-based materials. The present work deals with the facile precipitation method of silver phosphate. The effects of four different phosphate sources (H₃PO₄, NaH₂PO₄, Na₂HPO₄, Na₃PO₄·12 H₂O) and two different initial concentrations (0.1 M and 0.2 M) were investigated. As the basicity of different phosphate sources influences the purity of Ag₃PO₄, different products were obtained. Using H₃PO₄ did not lead to the formation of Ag₃PO₄, while applying NaH₂PO₄ resulted in Ag₃PO₄ and a low amount of pyrophosphate. The morphological and structural properties of the obtained samples were studied by X-ray diffractometry, diffuse reflectance spectroscopy, scanning electron microscopy, infrared spectroscopy, and X-ray photoelectron spectroscopy. The photocatalytic activity of the materials and the corresponding reaction kinetics were evaluated by the degradation of methyl orange (MO) under visible light. Their stability was investigated by reusability tests, photoluminescence measurements, and the recharacterization after degradation. The effect of as-deposited Ag nanoparticles was also highlighted on the photostability and the reusability of Ag₃PO₄. Although the deposited Ag nanoparticles suppressed the formation of holes and reduced the degradation of methyl orange, they did not reduce the performance of the photocatalyst.

Insights into the Stability of Graphene Oxide Aqueous Dispersions

Understanding graphene oxide's stability (or lack thereof) in liquid solvents is critical for fine-tuning the material's characteristics and its potential involvement in future applications. In this work, through the use of structural and surface investigations, the alteration of the structural and edge-surface properties of 2D graphene oxide nanosheets was monitored over a period of eight weeks by involving DLS, zeta potential, XRD, XPS, Raman and FT-IR spectroscopy techniques. The samples were synthesized as an aqueous suspension by an original modified Marcano-Tour method centred on the sono-chemical exfoliation of graphite. Based on the acquired experimental results and the available literature, a phenomenological explanation of the two underlying mechanisms responsible for the meta-stability of graphene oxide aqueous dispersions is proposed. It is based on the cleavage of the carbon bonds in the first 3-4 weeks, while the bonding of oxygen functional groups on the carbon lattice occurs, and the transformation of epoxide and hydroxyl groups into adsorbed water molecules in a process driven by the availability of hydrogen in graphene oxide nanosheets.

Bioactive Properties of Composites Based on Silicate Glasses and Different Silver and Gold Structures

Using an ideal biomaterial to treat injured bones can accelerate the healing process and simultaneously exhibit antibacterial properties; thus protecting the patient from bacterial infections. Therefore, the aim of this work was to synthesize composites containing silicate-based bioactive glasses and different types of noble metal structures (i.e., AgI pyramids, AgIAu composites, Au nanocages, Au nanocages with added AgI). Bioactive glass was used as an osteoconductive bone substitute and Ag was used for its antibacterial character, while Au was included to accelerate the formation of new bone. To investigate the synergistic effects in these composites, two syntheses were carried out in two ways: AgIAu composites were added in either one step or AgI pyramids and Au nanocages were added separately. All composites showed good in vitro bioactivity. Transformation of AgI in bioactive glasses into Ag nanoparticles and other silver species resulted in good antibacterial behavior. It was observed that the Ag nanoparticles remained in the Au nanocages, which was also beneficial in terms of antibacterial properties. The presence of Au nanoparticles contributed to the composites achieving high cell viability. The most outstanding result was obtained by the consecutive addition of noble metals into the bioactive glasses, resulting in both a high antibacterial effect and good cell viability.

Structural characterization of interfaces in silica core-alumina shell microspheres by solid-state NMR spectroscopy

Atomic-scale description of surfaces and interfaces in core-shell aluminosilicate materials is not fully elucidated, partially due to their amorphous character and complex mechanisms that govern their properties. In this paper, new insights into nanostructured core-shell aluminosilicates have been demonstrated, by using different solid-state NMR methods, i.e ²⁹Si, ²⁹Si cross-polarization (CP), ²⁷Al, ²⁷Al triple-quantum (3Q), and ¹H-²⁷Al heteronuclear correlation (HETCOR) MAS NMR. For this purpose, nanostructured silica core-alumina shell microspheres, undoped and doped with gadolinium ions respectively, obtained by a chemical synthesis based on the Stöber method for the silica core and electrostatic attraction for developing the alumina shell were studied. As a result, a new alumino-silicate layer formation was proved at the interface between silica core, where aluminum diffuses, on small scale, in the silica network, and alumina shell, where silicon ions migrate, on a larger scale, in the alumina network, leading to a stable core-shell structure. Moreover, this process is accompanied by significant local structural changes in the transition zone, particularly at the aluminum neighborhood, which is quite well understood now, with the power of solid-state NMR spectroscopy.

Co-Crystals of Etravirine by Mechanochemical Activation

The co-crystals formation of etravirine with three carboxylic acids was investigated. New co-crystals of etravirine with adipic acid, benzoic acid, and 4-hydroxybenzoic acid have been synthesized by wet milling of ingredients for 120 min. The novelty of these solid forms was first evidenced by powder X-ray diffraction. Their different morphology was evidenced by SEM microscopy. Spectroscopic analyses (FT-IR, MAS-NMR, and XPS) highlighted the hydrogen bonds between etravirine and co-formers, as a result of the solid-state reaction of the ingredients by wet milling. Thermal analyses pointed out that the milling process caused in co-crystals a reduction in the fusion enthalpy and the melting temperature, compared to the values obtained for etravirine. These co-crystals are stable up to four months on storage under extreme conditions, excepting the co-crystal with benzoic acid which begins to transform into a polymorph of etravirine after 30 days. The UV absorption spectra of the samples tested in three simulated physiological media with pH values of 6, 6.3, and 7 have evidenced the conformation change of etravirine due to hydrogen bonds between etravirine and carboxylic acids.

Shape tailoring of AgBr microstructures: effect of the cations of different bromide sources and applied surfactants

Investigations regarding AgBr-based photocatalysts came to the center of attention due to their high photosensitivity. The present research focuses on the systematic investigation regarding the effect of different alkali metal cation radii and surfactants/capping agents applied during the synthesis of silver-halides. Their morpho-structural and optical properties were determined via X-ray diffractometry, diffuse reflectance spectroscopy, scanning electron microscopy, infrared spectroscopy, and contact angle measurements. The semiconductors' photocatalytic activities were investigated using methyl orange as the model contaminant under visible light irradiation. The correlation between the photocatalytic activity and the obtained optical and morpho-structural properties was analyzed using generalized linear models. Moreover, since the (photo)stability of Ag-based photoactive materials is a crucial issue, the stability of catalysts was also investigated after the degradation process. It was concluded that (i) the photoactivity of the samples could be fine-tuned using different precursors and surfactants, (ii) the as-obtained AgBr microcrystals were transformed into other Ag-containing composites during/after the degradation, and (iii) elemental bromide did not form during the degradation process. Thus, the proposed mechanisms in the literature (for the degradation of MO using AgBr) must be reconsidered.

Systematic investigation of the effect of different alkali metal cation radii and shape-tailoring agents applied during the synthesis of AgBr-based photocatalysts.

Femtosecond pulsed laser microscopy: a new tool to assess the in vitro delivered dose of carbon nanotubes in cell culture experiments

Background

In vitro models are widely used in nanotoxicology. In these assays, a careful documentation of the fraction of nanomaterials that reaches the cells, i.e. the in vitro delivered dose, is a critical element for the interpretation of the data. The in vitro delivered dose can be measured by quantifying the amount of material in contact with the cells, or can be estimated by applying particokinetic models. For carbon nanotubes (CNTs), the determination of the in vitro delivered dose is not evident because their quantification in biological matrices is difficult, and particokinetic models are not adapted to high aspect ratio materials. Here, we applied a rapid and direct approach, based on femtosecond pulsed laser microscopy (FPLM), to assess the in vitro delivered dose of multi-walled CNTs (MWCNTs).

Methods and results

We incubated mouse lung fibroblasts (MLg) and differentiated human monocytic cells (THP-1) in 96-well plates for 24 h with a set of different MWCNTs. The cytotoxic response to the MWCNTs was evaluated using the WST-1 assay in both cell lines, and the pro-inflammatory response was determined by measuring the release of IL-1β by THP-1 cells. Contrasting cell responses were observed across the MWCNTs. The sedimentation rate of the different MWCNTs was assessed by monitoring turbidity decay with time in cell culture medium. These turbidity measurements revealed some differences among the MWCNT samples which, however, did not parallel the contrasting cell responses. FPLM measurements in cell culture wells revealed that the in vitro delivered MWCNT dose did not parallel sedimentation data, and suggested that cultured cells contributed to set up the delivered dose. The FPLM data allowed, for each MWCNT sample, an adjustment of the measured cytotoxicity and IL-1β responses to the delivered doses. This adjusted in vitro activity led to another toxicity ranking of the MWCNT samples as compared to the unadjusted activities. In macrophages, this adjusted ranking was consistent with existing knowledge on the impact of surface MWCNT functionalization on cytotoxicity, and might better reflect the intrinsic activity of the MWCNT samples.

Conclusion

The present study further highlights the need to estimate the in vitro delivered dose in cell culture experiments with nanomaterials. The FPLM measurement of the in vitro delivered dose of MWCNTs can enrich experimental results, and may refine our understanding of their interactions with cells.

The pulmonary toxicity of carboxylated or aminated multi-walled carbon nanotubes in mice is determined by the prior purification method

Background

Inhalation of multi-walled carbon nanotubes (MWCNTs) poses a potential risk to human health. In order to safeguard workers and consumers, the toxic properties of MWCNTs need to be identified. Functionalization has been shown to either decrease or increase MWCNT-related pulmonary injury, depending on the type of modification. We, therefore, investigated both acute and chronic pulmonary toxicity of a library of MWCNTs derived from a common pristine parent compound (NC7000).

Methods

MWCNTs were thermally or chemically purified and subsequently surface functionalized by carboxylation or amination. To evaluate pulmonary toxicity, male C57BL6 mice were dosed via oropharyngeal aspiration with either 1.6 or 4 mg/kg of each MWCNT type. Mitsui-7 MWCNT was used as a positive control. Necropsy was performed at days 3 and 60 post-exposure to collect bronchoalveolar lavage fluid (BALF) and lungs.

Results

At day 3 all MWCNTs increased the number of neutrophils in BALF. Chemical purification had a greater effect on pro-inflammatory cytokines (IL-1β, IL-6, CXCL1) in BALF, while thermal purification had a greater effect on pro-fibrotic cytokines (CCL2, OPN, TGF-β1). At day 60, thermally purified, carboxylated MWCNTs had the strongest effect on lymphocyte numbers in BALF. Thermally purified MWCNTs caused the greatest increase in LDH and total protein in BALF. Furthermore, the thermally purified and carboxyl- or amine-functionalized MWCNTs caused the greatest number of granulomatous lesions in the lungs. The physicochemical characteristics mainly associated with increased toxicity of the thermally purified derivatives were decreased surface defects and decreased amorphous content as indicated by Raman spectroscopy.

Conclusions

These data demonstrate that the purification method is an important determinant of lung toxicity induced by carboxyl- and amine-functionalized MWCNTs.

Multi-analyses of gallstones and correlation between their properties with the laboratory results

This study explores the morpho-structure of gallstones (GSs) removed from 36 patients in NW Romania and correlate it with the laboratory results of the patients. GSs were analyzed by SEM-EDS, X-ray diffraction and IR, UV-Vis and X-ray photoelectron spectroscopy. The laboratory studies consisted in hematological, coagulation, biochemistry, immunological and tumor markers tests. The morphological and structural investigations allowed to classify the GS in five different types and to establish their mechanism of formation. Only macroscopic evaluation, SEM microscopy, FTIR and UV-Vis spectroscopy give different easily noticeable information for each GS type. EDS, XPS and XRD diffraction are recommended to distinguish pigment and carbonate stones from the other GS types and a carefully examination is needed to establish the differences between the pure cholesterol, the mixed cholesterol and the composite cholesterol stones, due to the high similarities. The variation of specific markers cannot differentiate the patients with pure cholesterol GS from those with mixed cholesterol and pigment GS and those with mixed cholesterol from those with composite cholesterol stones. Seven laboratory parameters (RDW-CV, MPV, PCT, GLUC-HK, WBC, PT, GPT) are the key indicators for the GS disease and trend to present generally higher values than normal.

Utilization of Carbon Nanospheres in Photocatalyst Production: From Composites to Highly Active Hollow Structures

Titanium dioxide–carbon sphere (TiO₂–CS) composites were constructed via using prefabricated carbon spheres as templates. By the removal of template from the TiO₂–CS, TiO₂ hollow structures (HS) were synthesized. The CS templates were prepared by the hydrothermal treatment of ordinary table sugar (sucrose). TiO₂–HSs were obtained by removing CSs with calcination. Our own sensitized TiO₂ was used for coating the CSs. The structure of the CSs, TiO₂–CS composites, and TiO₂–HSs were characterized by scanning electron microscopy (SEM), infrared spectroscopy (IR), X-ray diffraction (XRD), X-ray photoelectron spectroscopy (XPS), and diffuse reflectance spectroscopy (DRS). The effect of various synthesis parameters (purification method of CSs, precursor quantity, and applied furnace) on the morphology was investigated. The photocatalytic activity was investigated by phenol model pollutant degradation under visible light irradiation (λ > 400 nm). It was established that the composite samples possess lower crystallinity and photocatalytic activity compared to TiO₂ hollow structures. Based on XPS measurements, the carbon content on the surface of the TiO₂–HS exerts an adverse effect on the photocatalytic performance. The synthesis parameters were optimized and the TiO₂–HS specimen having the best absolute and surface normalized photocatalytic efficiency was identified. The superior properties were explained in terms of its unique morphology and surface properties. The stability of this TiO₂–HS was investigated via XRD and SEM measurements after three consecutive phenol degradation tests, and it was found to be highly stable as it entirely retained its crystal phase composition, morphology and photocatalytic activity.

Facile Green Synthesis of BiOBr Nanostructures with Superior Visible-Light-Driven Photocatalytic Activity

Novel green bismuth oxybromide (BiOBr-G) nanoflowers were successfully synthesized via facile hydrolysis route using an Azadirachta indica (Neem plant) leaf extract and concurrently, without the leaf extract (BiOBr-C). The Azadirachta indica leaf extract was employed as a sensitizer and stabilizer for BiOBr-G, which significantly expanded the optical window and boosted the formation of photogenerated charge carriers and transfer over the BiOBr-G surface. The photocatalytic performance of both samples was investigated for the degradation of methyl orange (MO) and phenol (Ph) under the irradiation of visible light. The leaf extract mediated BiOBr-G photocatalyst displayed significantly higher photocatalytic activity when compared to BiOBr-C for the degradation of both pollutants. The degradation rate of MO and Ph by BiOBr-G was found to be nearly 23% and 16% more when compared to BiOBr-C under visible light irradiation, respectively. The substantial increase in the photocatalytic performance of BiOBr-G was ascribed to the multiple synergistic effects between the efficient solar energy harvesting, narrower band gap, high specific surface area, porosity, and effective charge separation. Furthermore, BiOBr-G displayed high stability for five cycles of photocatalytic activity, which endows its practical application as a green photocatalyst in the long run.

Bioactive and biocompatible copper containing glass-ceramics with remarkable antibacterial properties and high cell viability designed for future in vivo trials

The efficiency of 60SiO₂·(32 − x) CaO·8P₂O₅·xCuO (mol%) glass-ceramics were proved, and was determined the most appropriate composition for further in vivo trials.

Micro-CT and histological analysis of Ti6Al7Nb custom made implants with hydroxyapatite and SiO2-TiO2 coatings in a rabbit model

Background and aim

Bone defect reconstruction in the maxillofacial area comes as a necessity after traumatic, oncological or congenital pathology. Custom made implant manufacturing, such as selective laser melting (SLM), is very helpful when bone reconstruction is needed. In the present study we assessed the osseointegration of custom made implants made of Ti₆Al₇Nb with two different coatings: SiO₂-TiO₂ and hydroxyapatite, by comparing the bone mineral density (BMD) measured on micro-CT and the histological mineralized bone surrounding the implants.

Methods

Custom made – cylindrical type – implants were produced by selective laser melting, coated with SiO₂-TiO₂ and hydroxyapatite and implanted in the rabbit femur. The animals (divided into 3 groups) were sacrificed at 1, 3 and 6 months and the implants were removed together with the surrounding bone. Bone mineral density and histological examination of the bone-implant surface was performed for each group.

Results

BMD and histological examination of the samples determined the quantity of mineralized bone at the implant site, showing a good percentage of mineralized bone for the coated implants at 1, 3 and 6 months. The measurements for the implants without coating showed a significant lower quantity of mineralized bone at 3 months compared with the implants with coating, and a good quantity of mineralized bone at 6 months, showing a process of demineralization followed by remineralization in the last month. The measurements of BMD showed similar results with the histological examination.

Conclusions

The use of micro-CT and the measurement of BMD are a reliable, minimally invasive and a quick method of osseointegration assessment.

Comparative in vitro study regarding the biocompatibility of titanium-base composites infiltrated with hydroxyapatite or silicatitanate

BACKGROUND

The development of novel biomaterials able to control cell activities and direct their fate is warranted for engineering functional bone tissues. Adding bioactive materials can improve new bone formation and better osseointegration. Three types of titanium (Ti) implants were tested for in vitro biocompatibility in this comparative study: Ti6Al7Nb implants with 25% total porosity used as controls, implants infiltrated using a sol-gel method with hydroxyapatite (Ti HA) and silicatitanate (Ti SiO2). The behavior of human osteoblasts was observed in terms of adhesion, cell growth and differentiation.

RESULTS

The two coating methods have provided different morphological and chemical properties (SEM and EDX analysis). Cell attachment in the first hour was slower on the Ti HA scaffolds when compared to Ti SiO2 and porous uncoated Ti implants. The Alamar blue test and the assessment of total protein content uncovered a peak of metabolic activity at day 8-9 with an advantage for Ti SiO2 implants. Osteoblast differentiation and de novo mineralization, evaluated by osteopontin (OP) expression (ELISA and immnocytochemistry), alkaline phosphatase (ALP) activity, calcium deposition (alizarin red), collagen synthesis (SIRCOL test and immnocytochemical staining) and osteocalcin (OC) expression, highlighted the higher osteoconductive ability of Ti HA implants. Higher soluble collagen levels were found for cells cultured in simple osteogenic differentiation medium on control Ti and Ti SiO2 implants. Osteocalcin (OC), a marker of terminal osteoblastic differentiation, was most strongly expressed in osteoblasts cultivated on Ti SiO2 implants.

CONCLUSIONS

The behavior of osteoblasts depends on the type of implant and culture conditions. Ti SiO2 scaffolds sustain osteoblast adhesion and promote differentiation with increased collagen and non-collagenic proteins (OP and OC) production. Ti HA implants have a lower ability to induce cell adhesion and proliferation but an increased capacity to induce early mineralization. Addition of growth factors BMP-2 and TGFβ1 in differentiation medium did not improve the mineralization process. Both types of infiltrates have their advantages and limitations, which can be exploited depending on local conditions of bone lesions that have to be repaired. These limitations can also be offset through methods of functionalization with biomolecules involved in osteogenesis.

Composite PLA scaffolds reinforced with PDO fibers for tissue engineering

Novel composite scaffolds were produced using long continuous bidirectional fibers embedded in an electrospun matrix, with the aim of using them in soft tissue engineering applications. The fibers are of polydioxanone and the matrix of polylactic acid. The novel manufacturing method consists of direct electrospinning performed on both sides of a collector that supports the already arranged fibers. The scaffolds were tested in vitro using 3T3 mouse fibroblasts as-obtained or functionalized with biotin or poly (dopamine). Functionalization did not significantly affect cells attachment, metabolic activity, or proliferation, but poly (dopamine) was proven to be effective in inducing hydrophilicity to the surface.
