Medical magnetic resonance imaging publications in Arab countries: A 25-year bibliometric analysis

Magnetic Resonance Imaging (MRI) is increasingly becoming a cornerstone in modern diagnostic healthcare, offering unparalleled capabilities in stroke, dementia, and cancer screening. Therefore, this study aims to map medical MRI literature affiliated with Arab countries, focusing on publication trends, top journals, author affiliations, study countries, and authors' collaboration, and keyword analysis. The scientific database used is the Scopus database. Microsoft Excel, VOSviewer software, and Biblioshiny for the Bibliometrix R package are the bibliometric tools used in this analysis. A total of 2592 publications were published between 1988 and 2022, with total citations of 22,115. Most of them were original articles (91,7%) and 89.9% were published in traditional journals. The number of total publications exhibited a steady increase over time, whereas total citations showed fluctuations, peaking in 2015 with 1571 citations for publications from that year. The most cited article was authored by Yaseen M. Arabi, receiving 286 citations. Saudi Arabia was the top active country. In addition, the most prolific author was Maha S Zaki, and the most prolific source was the "Egyptian Journal of Radiology and Nuclear Medicine". The most prolific affiliation was Cairo University. The "multiple sclerosis" and "case report" were the most trending keywords. The analysis revealed a significant growth in MRI research inside Arab countries, as shown by an increase in the total number of publications and international collaborations. Despite these developments, the results of this study suggest that there is still room for MRI research in the Arab region to advance. This can be achieved through increasing international collaboration and multidisciplinary work.

γ-Aminobutyric acid (GABA) in N2-fixing-legume symbiosis: Metabolic flux and carbon/nitrogen homeostasis in responses to abiotic constraints

Nodule symbiosis is an energetic process that demands a tremendous carbon (C) cost, which massively increases in responses to environmental stresses. Notably, most common respiratory pathways (e.g., glycolysis and Krebs cycle) that sustain nitrogenase activity and subsequent nitrogen (N) assimilation (amino acid formation) display a noncyclic mode of C flux. In such circumstances, the nodule's energy charge could markedly decrease, leading to a lower symbiotic activity under stresses. The host plant then attempts to induce alternative robust metabolic pathways to minimize the C expenditure and compensate for the loss in respiratory substrates. GABA (γ-aminobutyric acid) shunt appears to be among the highly conserved metabolic bypass induced in responses to stresses. Thus, it can be suggested that GABA, via its primary biosynthetic pathway (GABA shunt), is simultaneously induced to circumvent stress-susceptible decarboxylating portion of the Krebs cycle and to replenish symbiosome with energy and C skeletons for enhancing nitrogenase activity and N assimilation besides the additional C costs expended in the metabolic stress acclimations (e.g., biosynthesis of secondary metabolites and excretion of anions). The GABA-mediated C/N balance is strongly associated with interrelated processes, including pH regulation, oxygen (O2) protection, osmoregulation, cellular redox control, and N storage. Furthermore, it has been anticipated that GABA could be implicated in other functions beyond its metabolic role (i.e., signaling and transport). GABA helps plants possess remarkable metabolic plasticity, which might thus assist nodules in attenuating stressful events.

Jasmonic acid priming augments antioxidant defense and photosynthesis in soybean to alleviate combined heat and drought stress effects

In the aftermaths of global warming, plants are more frequently exposed to the combination of heat stress and drought in natural conditions. Jasmonic acid (JA) has been known to modulate numerous plant adaptive responses to diverse environmental stresses. However, the function of JA in regulating plant responses to the combined effects of heat and drought remains underexplored. In this study, we elucidated the functions of JA in enhancing the combined heat and drought tolerance of soybean (Glycine max). Our results showed that priming with JA improved plant biomass, photosynthetic efficiency and leaf relative water content, which all together contributed to the improved performance of soybean plants under single and combined heat and drought conditions. Exposure to single and combined heat and drought conditions caused oxidative damage in soybean leaves. Priming soybean plants, which were exposed to single and combined heat and drought conditions, with JA, on the other hand, substantially quenched the reactive oxygen species-induced oxidative burden possibly by bolstering their antioxidant defense system. Together, our findings provide direct evidence of the JA-mediated protective mechanisms in maintaining the optimal photosynthetic rate and plant performance under combined heat and drought conditions.

Bacterial chemotaxis of herbicide atrazine provides an insight into the degradation mechanism through intermediates hydroxyatrazine, N-N-isopropylammelide, and cyanuric acid compounds

In recent times, the herbicide atrazine (ATZ) has been commonly used before and after the cultivation of crop plants to manage grassy weeds. Despite its effect, the toxic residues of ATZ affect soil fertility and crop yield. Hence, the current study is focused on providing insight into the degradation mechanism of the herbicide atrazine through bacterial chemotaxis involving intermediates responsive to degradation. A bacterium was isolated from ATZ-contaminated soil and identified as Pseudomonas stutzeri based on its morphology, biochemical and molecular characterization. Upon ultra-performance liquid chromatography analysis, the free cells of isolated bacterium strain was found to utilize 174 μg/L of ATZ after 3-days of incubation on a mineral salt medium containing 200 μg/L of ATZ as a sole carbon source. It was observed that immobilized based degradation of ATZ yielded 198 μg/L and 190 μg/L by the cells entrapped with silica beads and sponge, respectively. Furthermore, the liquid chromatography-mass spectroscopy revealed that the secretion of three significant metabolites, namely, cyanuric acid, hydroxyatrazine and N- N-Isopropylammelide is responsive to the biodegradation of ATZ by the bacterium. Collectively, this research demonstrated that bacterium strains are the most potent agent for removing toxic pollutants from the environment, thereby enhancing crop yield and soil fertility with long-term environmental benefits.

Exploring the Phenotypic and Genetic Variabilities in Yield and Yield-Related Traits of the Diallel-Crossed F5 Population of Aus Rice

Rice (Oryza sativa) is a major crop and a main food for a major part of the global population. Rice species have derived from divergent agro-climatic regions, and thus, the local germplasm has a large genetic diversity. This study investigated the relationship between phenotypic and genetic variabilities of yield and yield-associated traits in Aus rice to identify short-duration, high-yielding genotypes. Targeting this issue, a field experiment was carried out to evaluate the performance of 51 Aus rice genotypes, including 50 accessions in F5 generation and one short-duration check variety BINAdhan-19. The genotypes exhibited a large and significant variation in yield and its associated traits, as evidenced by a wide range of their coefficient of variance. The investigated traits, including days to maturity (DM), plant height (PH), panicle length (PL) and 1000-grain weight (TW) exhibited a greater genotypic coefficient of variation than the environmental coefficient of variation. In addition, the high broad-sense heritability of DM, PH, PL and TW traits suggests that the genetic factors significantly influence the observed variations in these traits among the F5 Aus rice accessions. This study also revealed that the grain yield per hill (GY) displayed a significant positive correlation with PL, number of filled grains per panicle (FG) and TW at both genotype and phenotype levels. According to the hierarchical and K-means cluster analyses, the accessions BU-R-ACC-02, BU-R-ACC-08 and R2-36-3-1-1 have shorter DM and relatively higher GY than other Aus rice accessions. These three accessions could be employed in the ongoing and future breeding programs for the improvement of short-duration and high-yielding rice cultivars.

Reducing the environmental impact of surgery on a global scale: systematic review and co-prioritization with healthcare workers in 132 countries

BACKGROUND

Healthcare cannot achieve net-zero carbon without addressing operating theatres. The aim of this study was to prioritize feasible interventions to reduce the environmental impact of operating theatres.

METHODS

This study adopted a four-phase Delphi consensus co-prioritization methodology. In phase 1, a systematic review of published interventions and global consultation of perioperative healthcare professionals were used to longlist interventions. In phase 2, iterative thematic analysis consolidated comparable interventions into a shortlist. In phase 3, the shortlist was co-prioritized based on patient and clinician views on acceptability, feasibility, and safety. In phase 4, ranked lists of interventions were presented by their relevance to high-income countries and low-middle-income countries.

RESULTS

In phase 1, 43 interventions were identified, which had low uptake in practice according to 3042 professionals globally. In phase 2, a shortlist of 15 intervention domains was generated. In phase 3, interventions were deemed acceptable for more than 90 per cent of patients except for reducing general anaesthesia (84 per cent) and re-sterilization of 'single-use' consumables (86 per cent). In phase 4, the top three shortlisted interventions for high-income countries were: introducing recycling; reducing use of anaesthetic gases; and appropriate clinical waste processing. In phase 4, the top three shortlisted interventions for low-middle-income countries were: introducing reusable surgical devices; reducing use of consumables; and reducing the use of general anaesthesia.

CONCLUSION

This is a step toward environmentally sustainable operating environments with actionable interventions applicable to both high- and low-middle-income countries.

Chitosan-based Schiff base-metal (Fe, Cu, and Zn) complexes mitigate the negative consequences of drought stress on pomegranate fruits

Drought is one of the major environmental stresses that impairs fruit productivity and quality. The proper management of minerals can, however, assist plant to maintain their growth even under drought incidents, and is considered one of the encouraging approaches to refine the drought tolerance of plants. The beneficial effects of chitosan (CH)-based Schiff base-metal complexes (e.g., CH-Fe, CH-Cu and CH-Zn) in reducing the harmful impacts of different levels of drought stress on the growth and productivity of 'Malase Saveh' pomegranate cultivar were examined. All CH-metal complexes displayed favorable effects on the yield- and growth-related attributes of pomegranate trees cultivated under well-watered and different drought situations, with the best effects were observed with CH-Fe application. Specifically, leaves of CH-Fe-treated pomegranate plants showed higher concentrations of photosynthetic pigments [chlorophyll a (Chl a), Chl b, Chl a+b, and carotenoids by 28.0, 29.5, 28.6 and 85.7%, respectively] and microelements (Fe by 27.3%), along with increased levels of superoxide dismutase (by 35.3%) and ascorbate peroxidase (by 56.0%) enzymatic activities relative to those of CH-Fe-non-treated pomegranate plants under intense drought stress. CH-Fe-treated drought-stressed pomegranate leaves showed high increment of abscisic acid (by 25.1%) and indole-3-acetic acid (by 40.5%) relative to CH-Fe-non-treated pomegranates. The increased contents of total phenolics, ascorbic acid, total anthocyanins, and titratable acidity (by 24.3, 25.8, 9.3 and 30.9%, respectively) in the fruits of CH-Fe-treated drought-stressed pomegranates indicated the advantageousness of CH-Fe on the enhancement of fruit nutritional qualities. Collectively, our results prove the explicit functions of these complexes, particularly CH-Fe, in the control of drought-induced negative effects on pomegranate trees grown in semi-arid and dry areas.

Karrikin Receptor KAI2 Coordinates Salt Tolerance Mechanisms in Arabidopsis thaliana

Plants activate a myriad of signaling cascades to tailor adaptive responses under environmental stresses, such as salinity. While the roles of exogenous karrikins (KARs) in salt stress mitigation are well comprehended, genetic evidence of KAR signaling during salinity responses in plants remains unresolved. Here, we explore the functions of the possible KAR receptor KARRIKIN-INSENSITIVE2 (KAI2) in Arabidopsis thaliana tolerance to salt stress by investigating comparative responses of wild-type (WT) and kai2-mutant plants under a gradient of NaCl. Defects in KAI2 functions resulted in delayed and inhibited cotyledon opening in kai2 seeds compared with WT seeds, suggesting that KAI2 played an important role in enhancing seed germination under salinity. Salt-stressed kai2 plants displayed more phenotypic aberrations, biomass reduction, water loss and oxidative damage than WT plants. kai2 shoots accumulated significantly more Na+ and thus had a lower K+/Na+ ratio, than WT, indicating severe ion toxicity in salt-stressed kai2 plants. Accordingly, kai2 plants displayed a lower expression of genes associated with Na+ homeostasis, such as SALT OVERLY SENSITIVE (SOS) 1, SOS2, HIGH-AFFINITY POTASSIUM TRANSPORTER 1;1 (HKT1;1) and CATION-HYDROGEN EXCHANGER 1 (NHX1) than WT plants. WT plants maintained a better glutathione level, glutathione-related redox status and antioxidant enzyme activities relative to kai2 plants, implying KAI2's function in oxidative stress mitigation in response to salinity. kai2 shoots had lower expression levels of genes involved in the biosynthesis of strigolactones (SLs), salicylic acid and jasmonic acid and the signaling of abscisic acid and SLs than those of WT plants, indicating interactive functions of KAI2 signaling with other hormone signaling in modulating plant responses to salinity. Collectively, these results underpin the likely roles of KAI2 in the alleviation of salinity effects in plants by regulating several physiological and biochemical mechanisms involved in ionic and osmotic balance, oxidative stress tolerance and hormonal crosstalk.

The Karrikin Receptor Karrikin Insensitive2 Positively Regulates Heat Stress Tolerance in Arabidopsis thaliana

In this study, we investigated the potential role of the karrikin receptor KARRIKIN INSENSITIVE2 (KAI2) in the response of Arabidopsis seedlings to high-temperature stress. We performed phenotypic, physiological and transcriptome analyses of Arabidopsis kai2 mutants and wild-type (WT) plants under control (kai2_C and WT_C, respectively) and 6- and 24-h heat stress conditions (kai2_H6, kai2_H24, WT_H6 and WT_H24, respectively) to understand the basis for KAI2-regulated heat stress tolerance. We discovered that the kai2 mutants exhibited hypersensitivity to high-temperature stress relative to WT plants, which might be associated with a more highly increased leaf surface temperature and cell membrane damage in kai2 mutant plants. Next, we performed comparative transcriptome analysis of kai2_C, kai2_H6, kai2_H24, WT_C, WT_H6 and WT_H24 to identify transcriptome differences between WT and kai2 mutants in response to heat stress. K-mean clustering of normalized gene expression separated the investigated genotypes into three clusters based on heat-treated and non-treated control conditions. Within each cluster, the kai2 mutants were separated from WT plants, implying that kai2 mutants exhibited distinct transcriptome profiles relative to WT plants. Gene Ontology and Kyoto Encyclopedia of Genes and Genomes enrichment analyses showed a repression in 'misfolded protein binding', 'heat shock protein binding', 'unfolded protein binding' and 'protein processing in endoplasmic reticulum' pathways, which was consistent with the downregulation of several genes encoding heat shock proteins and heat shock transcription factors in the kai2 mutant versus WT plants under control and heat stress conditions. Our findings suggest that chemical or genetic manipulation of KAI2 signaling may provide a novel way to improve heat tolerance in plants.

SUPPRESSOR of MAX2 1 (SMAX1) and SMAX1-LIKE2 (SMXL2) Negatively Regulate Drought Resistance in Arabidopsis thaliana

Recent investigations in Arabidopsis thaliana suggest that SUPPRESSOR of MORE AXILLARY GROWTH 2 1 (SMAX1) and SMAX1-LIKE2 (SMXL2) are negative regulators of karrikin (KAR) and strigolactone (SL) signaling during plant growth and development, but their functions in drought resistance and related mechanisms of action remain unclear. To understand the roles and mechanisms of SMAX1 and SMXL2 in drought resistance, we investigated the drought-resistance phenotypes and transcriptome profiles of smax1 smxl2 (s1,2) double-mutant plants in response to drought stress. The s1,2 mutant plants showed enhanced drought-resistance and lower leaf water loss when compared with wild-type (WT) plants. Transcriptome comparison of rosette leaves from the s1,2 mutant and the WT under normal and dehydration conditions suggested that the mechanism related to cuticle formation was involved in drought resistance. This possibility was supported by enhanced cuticle formation in the rosette leaves of the s1,2 mutant. We also found that the s1,2 mutant plants were more sensitive to abscisic acid in assays of stomatal closure, cotyledon opening, chlorophyll degradation and growth inhibition, and they showed a higher reactive oxygen species detoxification capacity than WT plants. In addition, the s1,2 mutant plants had longer root hairs and a higher root-to-shoot ratio than the WT plants, suggesting that the mutant had a greater capacity for water absorption than the WT. Taken together, our results indicate that SMAX1 and SMXL2 negatively regulate drought resistance, and disruption of these KAR- and SL-signaling-related genes may therefore provide a novel means for improving crop drought resistance.

KARRIKIN UPREGULATED F-BOX 1 negatively regulates drought tolerance in Arabidopsis

The karrikin (KAR) receptor and several related signaling components have been identified by forward genetic screening, but only a few studies have reported on upstream and downstream KAR signaling components and their roles in drought tolerance. Here, we characterized the functions of KAR UPREGULATED F-BOX 1 (KUF1) in drought tolerance using a reverse genetics approach in Arabidopsis (Arabidopsis thaliana). We observed that kuf1 mutant plants were more tolerant to drought stress than wild-type (WT) plants. To clarify the mechanisms by which KUF1 negatively regulates drought tolerance, we performed physiological, transcriptome, and morphological analyses. We found that kuf1 plants limited leaf water loss by reducing stomatal aperture and cuticular permeability. In addition, kuf1 plants showed increased sensitivity of stomatal closure, seed germination, primary root growth, and leaf senescence to abscisic acid (ABA). Genome-wide transcriptome comparisons of kuf1 and WT rosette leaves before and after dehydration showed that the differences in various drought tolerance-related traits were accompanied by differences in the expression of genes associated with stomatal closure (e.g. OPEN STOMATA 1), lipid and fatty acid metabolism (e.g. WAX ESTER SYNTHASE), and ABA responsiveness (e.g. ABA-RESPONSIVE ELEMENT 3). The kuf1 mutant plants had higher root/shoot ratios and root hair densities than WT plants, suggesting that they could absorb more water than WT plants. Together, these results demonstrate that KUF1 negatively regulates drought tolerance by modulating various physiological traits, morphological adjustments, and ABA responses and that the genetic manipulation of KUF1 in crops is a potential means of enhancing their drought tolerance.

Feasibility study of computational occupational dosimetry: evaluating a proof-of-concept in an endovascular and interventional cardiology setting

Individual monitoring of radiation workers is essential to ensure compliance with legal dose limits and to ensure that doses are As Low As Reasonably Achievable. However, large uncertainties still exist in personal dosimetry and there are issues with compliance and incorrect wearing of dosimeters. The objective of the PODIUM (Personal Online Dosimetry Using Computational Methods) project was to improve personal dosimetry by an innovative approach: the development of an online dosimetry application based on computer simulations without the use of physical dosimeters. Occupational doses were calculated based on the use of camera tracking devices, flexible individualised phantoms and data from the radiation source. When combined with fast Monte Carlo simulation codes, the aim was to perform personal dosimetry in real-time. A key component of the PODIUM project was to assess and validate the methodology in interventional radiology workplaces where improvements in dosimetry are needed. This paper describes the feasibility of implementing the PODIUM approach in a clinical setting. Validation was carried out using dosimeters worn by Vascular Surgeons and Interventional Cardiologists during patient procedures at a hospital in Ireland. Our preliminary results from this feasibility study show acceptable differences of the order of 40% between calculated and measured staff doses, in terms of the personal dose equivalent quantity H_p(10), however there is a greater deviation for more complex cases and improvements are needed. The challenges of using the system in busy interventional rooms have informed the future needs and applicability of PODIUM. The availability of an online personal dosimetry application has the potential to overcome problems that arise from the use of current dosimeters. In addition, it should increase awareness of radiation protection among staff. Some limitations remain and a second phase of development would be required to bring the PODIUM method into operation in a hospital setting. However, an early prototype system has been tested in a clinical setting and the results from this two-year proof-of-concept PODIUM project are very promising for future development.

Modulation of osmoprotection and antioxidant defense by exogenously applied acetate enhances cadmium stress tolerance in lentil seedlings

To examine the potential role of acetate in conferring cadmium (Cd) stress tolerance in lentil (Lens culinaris), several phenotypical and physio-biochemical properties have been examined in Cd-stressed lentil seedlings following acetate applications. Acetate treatment inhibited the translocation of Cd from roots to shoots, which resulted in a minimal reduction in photosynthetic pigment contents. Additionally, acetate-treated lentil showed higher shoot (1.1 and 11.72%) and root (4.98 and 30.64%) dry weights compared with acetate-non-treated plants under low-Cd and high-Cd concentrations, respectively. Concurrently, acetate treatments increase osmoprotection under low-Cd stress through proline accumulation (24.69%), as well as enhancement of antioxidant defense by increasing ascorbic acid content (239.13%) and catalase activity (148.51%) under high-Cd stress. Acetate-induced antioxidant defense resulted in a significant diminution in hydrogen peroxide, malondialdehyde and electrolyte leakage in Cd-stressed lentil seedlings. Our results indicated that acetate application mitigated oxidative stress-induced damage by modulating antioxidant defense and osmoprotection, and reducing root-to-shoot Cd transport. These findings indicate an important contribution of acetate in mitigating the Cd toxicity during growth and development of lentil seedlings, and suggest that the exogenous applications of acetate could be an economical and new avenue for controlling heavy metal-caused damage in lentil, and potentially in many other crops.

Differential metabolic rearrangements in the roots and leaves of Cicer arietinum caused by single or double nitrate and/or phosphate deficiencies

Nitrate (NO₃ ^- ) and phosphate (Pi) deficiencies are the major constraints for chickpea productivity, significantly impacting global food security. However, excessive fertilization is expensive and can also lead to environmental pollution. Therefore, there is an urgent need to develop chickpea cultivars that are able to grow on soils deficient in both NO₃ ^- and Pi. This study focused on the identification of key NO₃ ^- and/or Pi starvation-responsive metabolic pathways in the leaves and roots of chickpea grown under single and double nutrient deficiencies of NO₃ ^- and Pi, in comparison with nutrient-sufficient conditions. A global metabolite analysis revealed organ-specific differences in the metabolic adaptation to nutrient deficiencies. Moreover, we found stronger adaptive responses in the roots and leaves to any single than combined nutrient-deficient stresses. For example, chickpea enhanced the allocation of carbon among nitrogen-rich amino acids (AAs) and increased the production of organic acids in roots under NO₃ ^- deficiency, whereas this adaptive response was not found under double nutrient deficiency. Nitrogen remobilization through the transport of AAs from leaves to roots was greater under NO₃ ^- deficiency than double nutrient deficiency conditions. Glucose-6-phosphate and fructose-6-phosphate accumulated in the roots under single nutrient deficiencies, but not under double nutrient deficiency, and higher glycolytic pathway activities were observed in both roots and leaves under single nutrient deficiency than double nutrient deficiency. Hence, the simultaneous deficiency generated a unique profile of metabolic changes that could not be simply described as the result of the combined deficiencies of the two nutrients.

Potassium in plant physiological adaptation to abiotic stresses

Potassium (K) is an integral part of plant nutrition, playing essential roles in plant growth and development. Despite its abundance in soils, the limitedly available form of K ion (K⁺) for plant uptake is a critical factor for agricultural production. Plants have evolved complex transport systems to maintain appropriate K⁺ levels in tissues under changing environmental conditions. Adequate stimulation and coordinated actions of multiple K⁺-channels and K⁺-transporters are required for nutrient homeostasis, reproductive growth, cellular signaling and stress adaptation responses in plants. Various contemporary studies revealed that K⁺-homeostasis plays a substantial role in plant responses and tolerance to abiotic stresses. The beneficial effects of K⁺ in plant responses to abiotic stresses include its roles in physiological and biochemical mechanisms involved in photosynthesis, osmoprotection, stomatal regulation, water-nutrient absorption, nutrient translocation and enzyme activation. Over the last decade, we have seen considerable breakthroughs in K research, owing to the advances in omics technologies. In this aspect, omics investigations (e.g., transcriptomics, metabolomics, and proteomics) in systems biology manner have broadened our understanding of how K⁺ signals are perceived, conveyed, and integrated for improving plant physiological resilience to abiotic stresses. Here, we update on how K⁺-uptake and K⁺-distribution are regulated under various types of abiotic stress. We discuss the effects of K⁺ on several physiological functions and the interaction of K⁺ with other nutrients to improve plant potential against abiotic stress-induced adverse consequences. Understanding of how K⁺ orchestrates physiological mechanisms and contributes to abiotic stress tolerance in plants is essential for practicing sustainable agriculture amidst the climate crisis in global agriculture.

Intensive care unit readmission in adult Egyptian patients undergoing living donor liver transplant: A single-centre retrospective cohort study

BACKGROUND

Patients who undergo living donor liver transplantation (LDLT) may suffer complications that require intensive care unit (ICU) readmission.

AIM

To identify the incidence, causes, and outcomes of ICU readmission after LDLT.

METHODS

A retrospective cohort study was conducted on patients who underwent LDLT. The collected data included patient demographics, preoperative characteristics, intraoperative details; postoperative stay, complications, causes of ICU readmission, and outcomes. Patients were divided into two groups according to ICU readmission after hospital discharge. Risk factors for ICU readmission were identified in univariate and multivariate analyses.

RESULTS

The present study included 299 patients. Thirty-one (10.4%) patients were readmitted to the ICU after discharge. Patients who were readmitted to the ICU were older in age (53.0 ± 5.1 vs 49.4 ± 8.8, P = 0.001) and had a significantly higher percentage of women (29% vs 13.4%, P = 0.032), diabetics (41.9% vs 24.6%, P = 0.039), hypertensives (22.6% vs 6.3%, P = 0.006), and renal (6.5% vs 0%, P = 0.010) patients as well as a significantly longer initial ICU stay (6 vs 4 d, respectively, P < 0.001). Logistic regression analysis revealed that significant independent risk factors for ICU readmission included recipient age (OR = 1.048, 95%CI = 1.005-1.094, P = 0.030) and length of initial hospital stay (OR = 0.836, 95%CI = 0.789-0.885, P < 0.001).

CONCLUSION

The identification of high-risk patients (older age and shorter initial hospital stay) before ICU discharge may help provide optimal care and tailor follow-up to reduce the rate of ICU readmission.

Medical Radiation Safety and COVID-19 Knowledge and Awareness among UAE Residents: A Cross-Sectional Study

Radiologic examinations are valuable tools in the evaluation of COVID-19. A patient-centered care approach encourages patient involvement in decision-making related to their health management. Therefore, patients should have basic knowledge about their disease and its evaluation tools. Therefore, the purpose of this prospective study is to evaluate the public level of knowledge and awareness regarding COVID-19 and radiation safety in the UAE. Methods: A cross-sectional survey study was conducted using an online questionnaire (Google platform). The data collection instrument contained close-ended questions in both Arabic and English. The questions aimed to collect demographic information and to measure the level of knowledge and awareness of COVID-19 and radiation safety. The questionnaire was distributed online using different social media platforms. Results: A total of 1548 participants have completed the questionnaire; 84% were females and 16% were males. The participants’ average age was 24 years. Sixty-eight percent of the participants showed a high level of awareness of the COVID-19 pandemic, while most of the participants (51%) only showed a low level in the radiation safety awareness section. Factors such as Emirates of residence and passively receiving awareness information were shown to predict knowledge and awareness level. Conclusions: The UAE public was found to have a high level of knowledge and awareness about the COVID-19 disease. However, the same could not be said about radiation safety. More effort should be put towards raising the public’s knowledge and awareness about the risk of radiation in order to enable them to participate actively in decisions regarding the radiologic management of their disease.

Chromosome-scale haplotype-phased genome assemblies of the male and female lines of wild asparagus (Asparagus kiusianus), a dioecious plant species

Asparagus kiusianus is a disease-resistant dioecious plant species and a wild relative of garden asparagus (Asparagus officinalis). To enhance A. kiusianus genomic resources, advance plant science, and facilitate asparagus breeding, we determined the genome sequences of the male and female lines of A. kiusianus. Genome sequence reads obtained with a linked-read technology were assembled into four haplotype-phased contig sequences (∼1.6 Gb each) for the male and female lines. The contig sequences were aligned onto the chromosome sequences of garden asparagus to construct pseudomolecule sequences. Approximately 55,000 potential protein-encoding genes were predicted in each genome assembly, and ∼70% of the genome sequence was annotated as repetitive. Comparative analysis of the genomes of the two species revealed structural and sequence variants between the two species as well as between the male and female lines of each species. Genes with high sequence similarity with the male-specific sex determinant gene in A. officinalis, MSE1/AoMYB35/AspTDF1, were presented in the genomes of the male line but absent from the female genome assemblies. Overall, the genome sequence assemblies, gene sequences, and structural and sequence variants determined in this study will reveal the genetic mechanisms underlying sexual differentiation in plants, and will accelerate disease-resistance breeding in garden asparagus.

Exogenous melatonin mitigates salinity-induced damage in olive seedlings by modulating ion homeostasis, antioxidant defense, and phytohormone balance

Melatonin (MEL) is a ubiquitous molecule with pleiotropic roles in plant adaption to stress. In this study, we investigated the effects of foliar spray of 100 and 200 μM MEL on the biochemical and physiological traits linked with the growth performance of olive seedlings exposed to moderate (45 mM NaCl) and severe (90 mM NaCl) salinity. Both salt stress conditions caused a considerable reduction in leaf relative water content and the contents of photosynthetic pigments (carotenoids, chlorophylls a and b, and total chlorophylls), K⁺ and Ca⁺² , while the contents of Na⁺ and the activities of antioxidant enzymes increased. In addition, salt-stressed olive seedlings showed high accumulations of hydrogen peroxide (H₂ O₂ ), malondialdehyde (MDA), and electrolyte leakage (EL), indicating that olive seedlings suffered from salinity-induced oxidative damage. In contrast, MEL application revived the growth of olive seedlings, including shoot height, root length and biomass under salt stress conditions. MEL protected the photosynthetic pigments and decreased the Na⁺ /K⁺ ratio under both moderate and severe salt stresses. Furthermore, MEL induced the accumulations of proline, total soluble sugars, glycine betaine, abscisic acid, and indole acetic acid in salt-stressed olive seedlings, which showed a positive correlation with improved leaf water status and biomass. MEL application also increased the activities of catalase, superoxide dismutase, ascorbate peroxidase, and peroxidase in salt-stressed seedlings, resulting in lower levels of H₂ O₂ , MDA, and EL in these plants. Taken together, MEL mitigates salinity through its roles in various biochemical and physiological processes, thereby representing a promising agent for application in crop protection.

PERSONAL DOSIMETRY USING MONTE-CARLO SIMULATIONS FOR OCCUPATIONAL DOSE MONITORING IN INTERVENTIONAL RADIOLOGY: THE RESULTS OF A PROOF OF CONCEPT IN A CLINICAL SETTING

Exposure levels to staff in interventional radiology (IR) may be significant and appropriate assessment of radiation doses is needed. Issues regarding measurements using physical dosemeters in the clinical environment still exist. The objective of this work was to explore the prerequisites for assessing staff radiation dose, based on simulations only. Personal dose equivalent, Hp(10), was assessed using simulations based on Monte Carlo methods. The position of the operator was defined using a 3D motion tracking system. X-ray system exposure parameters were extracted from the x-ray equipment. The methodology was investigated and the simulations compared to measurements during IR procedures. The results indicate that the differences between simulated and measured staff radiation doses, in terms of the personal dose equivalent quantity Hp(10), are in the order of 30-70 %. The results are promising but some issues remain to be solved, e.g. an automated tracking of movable parts such as the ceiling-mounted protection shield.

Identification of miRNAs-mediated seed and stone-hardening regulatory networks and their signal pathway of GA-induced seedless berries in grapevine (V. vinifera L.)

BACKGROUND

Stone-hardening stage is crucial to the development of grape seed and berry quality. A significant body of evidence supports the important roles of MicroRNAs in grape-berry development, but their specific molecular functions during grape stone-hardening stage remain unclear.

RESULTS

Here, a total of 161 conserved and 85 species-specific miRNAs/miRNAs* (precursor) were identified in grape berries at stone-hardening stage using Solexa sequencing. Amongst them, 30 VvmiRNAs were stone-hardening stage-specific, whereas 52 exhibited differential expression profiles during berry development, potentially participating in the modulation of berry development as verified by their expression patterns. GO and KEGG pathway analysis showed that 13 VvmiRNAs might be involved in the regulation of embryo development, another 11 in lignin and cellulose biosynthesis, and also 28 in the modulation of hormone signaling, sugar, and proline metabolism. Furthermore, the target genes for 4 novel VvmiRNAs related to berry development were validated using RNA Ligase-Mediated (RLM)-RACE and Poly(A) Polymerase-Mediated (PPM)-RACE methods, and their cleavage mainly occurred at the 9th-11th sites from the 5' ends of miRNAs at their binding regions. In view of the regulatory roles of GA in seed embryo development and stone-hardening in grape, we investigated the expression modes of VvmiRNAs and their target genes during GA-induced grape seedless-berry development, and we validated that GA induced the expression of VvmiR31-3p and VvmiR8-5p to negatively regulate the expression levels of CAFFEOYL COENZYME A-3-O-METHYLTRANSFERASE (VvCCoAOMT), and DDB1-CUL4 ASSOCIATED FACTOR1 (VvDCAF1). The series of changes might repress grape stone hardening and embryo development, which might be a potential key molecular mechanism in GA-induced grape seedless-berry development. Finally, a schematic model of miRNA-mediated grape seed and stone-hardening development was proposed.

CONCLUSION

This work identified 30 stone-hardening stage-specific VvmiRNAs and 52 significant differential expression ones, and preliminary interpreted the potential molecular mechanism of GA-induced grape parthenocarpy. GA negatively manipulate the expression of VvCCoAOMT and VvDCAF1 by up-regulation the expression of VvmiR31-3p and VvmiR8-5p, thereby repressing seed stone and embryo development to produce grape seedless berries.

Acetic acid improves drought acclimation in soybean: an integrative response of photosynthesis, osmoregulation, mineral uptake and antioxidant defense

Exposure to drought stress negatively affects plant productivity and consequently threatens global food security. As global climates change, identifying solutions to increase the resilience of plants to drought is increasingly important. Several chemical treatments have recently emerged as promising techniques for various individual and combined abiotic stresses. This study shows compelling evidence on how acetic acid application promotes drought acclimation responses in soybean by investigating several morphological, physiological and biochemical attributes. Foliar applications of acetic acid to drought-exposed soybean resulted in improvements in root biomass, leaf area, photosynthetic rate and water use efficiency; leading to improved growth performance. Drought-induced accumulation of reactive oxygen species, and the resultant increased levels of malondialdehyde and electrolyte leakage, were considerably reverted by acetic acid treatment. Acetic acid-sprayed plants suffered less oxidative stress due to the enhancement of antioxidant defense mechanisms, as evidenced by the increased activities of superoxide dismutase, ascorbate peroxidase, catalase, glutathione peroxidase and glutathione S-transferase. Improved shoot relative water content was also linked to the increased levels of soluble sugars and free amino acids, indicating a better osmotic adjustment following acetic acid treatment in drought-exposed plants. Acetic acid also increased stem/root, leaf/stem and leaf/root mineral ratios and improved overall mineral status in drought-stressed plants. Taken together, our results demonstrated that acetic acid treatment enabled soybean plants to positively regulate photosynthetic ability, water balance, mineral homeostasis and antioxidant responses; thereby suggesting acetic acid as a cost-effective and easily accessible chemical for the management of soybean growth and productivity in drought-prone areas.

Virtual estimation of effective dose in neutron fields

The PODIUM project aims to provide real-time assessments of occupationally exposed workers by tracking their motion and combining this with a simulation of the radiation field. The present work describes the approach that would be taken in mixed neutron-gamma fields, and details the methods for generating and applying an effective dose rate map; the required fluence to effective dose conversion coefficients at intercardinal angles are also presented. A proof-of-concept of the approach is demonstrated using a simple simulated workplace field within a calibration laboratory, with corroborative comparisons made against survey instrument measurements generally confirming good agreement. Simulated tracking of an individual within the facility was performed, recording a 1.25μSv total effective dose and accounting for dose rates as low as 0.5 nSv h^-1, which is much lower than anything that could be accurately measured by physical neutron dosemeters in such a field.

Silicon in mitigation of abiotic stress-induced oxidative damage in plants

Accumulation of reactive oxygen species (ROS), and their destructive effects on cellular organelles are the hallmark features of plants exposed to abiotic stresses. Plants are well-equipped with defensive mechanisms like antioxidant systems to deal with ROS-induced oxidative stress. Silicon has been emerged as an important regulator of plant protective mechanisms under environmental stresses, which can be up-taken from soil through a system of various silicon-transporters. In plants, silicon is deposited underneath of cuticles and in the cell wall, and help plant cells reduce deleterious effects of stresses. Furthermore, silicon can provide resistance to ROS-toxicity, which often accounts for silicon-mediated improvement of plant tolerance to different abiotic constraints, including salinity, drought, and metal toxicity. Silicon enhances the ROS-detoxification ability of treated plants by modulating the antioxidant defense systems, and the expression of key genes associated with oxidative stress mitigation and hormone metabolism. Silicon also displays additive roles in ROS-elimination when supplied with other external stimuli. Here, we discuss recent findings on how silicon is able to modulate antioxidant defense of plants in response to oxidative stress triggered by different abiotic constraints. We also review interactions of silicon with other signaling molecules, including nitric oxide, ROS, polyamines, and phytohormones in the mediation of plant protection against abiotic stress-induced oxidative damage.

Comprehensive Metabolite Profiling in Genetic Resources of Garlic (Allium sativum L.) Collected from Different Geographical Regions

Garlic (Allium sativum) is the second most important Allium crop that has been used as a vegetable and condiment from ancient times due to its characteristic flavor and taste. Although garlic is a sterile plant that reproduces vegetatively through cloves, garlic shows high biodiversity, as well as phenotypic plasticity and environmental adaptation capacity. To determine the possible mechanism underlying this phenomenon and to provide new genetic materials for the development of a novel garlic cultivar with useful agronomic traits, the metabolic profiles in the leaf tissue of 30 garlic accessions collected from different geographical regions, with a special focus on the Asian region, were investigated using LC/MS. In addition, the total saponin and fructan contents in the roots and cloves of the investigated garlic accessions were also evaluated. Total saponin and fructan contents did not separate the garlic accessions based on their geographical origin, implying that saponin and fructan contents were clone-specific and agroclimatic changes have affected the quantitative and qualitative levels of saponins in garlic over a long history of cultivation. Principal component analysis (PCA) and dendrogram clustering of the LC/MS-based metabolite profiling showed two major clusters. Specifically, many Japanese and Central Asia accessions were grouped in cluster I and showed high accumulations of flavonol glucosides, alliin, and methiin. On the other hand, garlic accessions grouped in cluster II exhibited a high accumulation of anthocyanin glucosides and amino acids. Although most of the accessions were not separated based on country of origin, the Central Asia accessions were clustered in one group, implying that these accessions exhibited distinct metabolic profiles. The present study provides useful information that can be used for germplasm selection and the development of new garlic varieties with beneficial biotic and abiotic stress-adaptive traits.

The implications of increased mammographic breast density for breast screening in Jordan

INTRODUCTION

Mammographic breast density is associated with a four to six times increased risk for breast cancer. Mammographic breast density varies by ethnicity, geographical region and age. The aim of this study was to document for the first time the mammographic breast density of Jordanian women and to explore its relationship with age.

METHODS

Mammograms completed at King Abdullah University Hospital (Irbid, Jordan) between January 2016 and August 2018 were retrospectively reviewed and classified for breast density using the American College of Radiology (ACR) Breast Imaging-Reporting and Data System (BI-RADS). Descriptive analyses and Kurskal-Wallis test were used to examine the association between age and mammographic breast density.

RESULTS

A total of 659 mammograms were reviewed. A significant inverse relationship was observed between age and breast density (P < 0.001). In women aged 40-49 years, 83.2% had dense breasts (ACR BI-RADS (c) and (d)). This percentage decreased to 59.8% of women aged 50-59 years; 38.4% of women in their 60s and 37.9% of women aged 70 years or older (ACR BI-RADS (c) only).

CONCLUSION

The mammographic breast density of Jordanian women has been shown to be high across all age groups. Increased mammographic breast density is associated with increased breast cancer risk and renders mammography a less effective technique for the early detection of breast cancer. Breast cancer screening of Jordanian women should be individualised to develop screening protocols and include additional adjunct imaging to best manage women at high risk.

Metabolome-Based Discrimination Analysis of Shallot Landraces and Bulb Onion Cultivars Associated with Differences in the Amino Acid and Flavonoid Profiles

Shallot landraces and varieties are considered an important genetic resource for Allium breeding due to their high contents of several functional metabolites. Aiming to provide new genetic materials for the development of a novel bulb onion cultivar derived from intraspecific hybrids with useful agronomic traits from shallots, the metabolic profiles in the bulbs of 8 Indonesian shallot landraces and 7 short-day and 3 long-day bulb onion cultivars were established using LC–Q-TOF-MS/MS. Principal component analysis, partial least squares discriminant analysis, and dendrogram clustering analysis showed two major groups; group I contained all shallot landraces and group II contained all bulb onion cultivars, indicating that shallots exhibited a distinct metabolic profile in comparison with bulb onions. Variable importance in the projection and Spearman’s rank correlation indicated that free and conjugated amino acids, flavonoids (especially metabolites having flavonol aglycone), and anthocyanins, as well as organic acids, were among the top metabolite variables that were highly associated with shallot landraces. The absolute quantification of 21 amino acids using conventional HPLC analysis showed high contents in shallots rather than in bulb onions. The present study indicated that shallots reprogrammed their metabolism toward a high accumulation of amino acids and flavonoids as an adaptive mechanism in extremely hot tropical environments.

Metabolic and physiological responses to progressive drought stress in bread wheat

Wheat (Tritium aestivum) is vulnerable to future climate change because it is predominantly grown under rain-fed conditions in drought-prone areas. Thus, in-depth understanding of drought effect on wheat metabolism is essential for developing drought-tolerant wheat varieties. Here, we exposed wheat 'Norin 61' plants to progressive drought stress [0 (before drought), 2, 4, 6, 8, and 10 days after withholding water] during the flowering stage to investigate physiological and metabolomic responses. Transcriptional analyses of key abscisic acid-responsive genes indicated that abscisic acid signalling played a major role in the adaptation of wheat to water deficit. Carbon isotope composition had a higher value than the control while canopy temperature (CT) increased under drought stress. The CT depression was tightly correlated with soil water potential (SWP). Additionally, SWP at - 517 kPa was identified as the critical point for increasing CT and inducing reactive oxygen species. Metabolome analysis identified four potential drought-responsive biomarkers, the enhancement of nitrogen recycling through purine and pyrimidine metabolism, drought-induced senescence based on 1-aminocyclopropane-1-carboxylic acid and Asn accumulation, and an anti-senescence response through serotonin accumulation under severe drought stress. Our findings provide in-depth insight into molecular, physiological and metabolite changes involved in drought response which are useful for wheat breeding programs to develop drought-tolerant wheat varieties.

Comparative Metabolome and Transcriptome Analyses of Susceptible Asparagus officinalis and Resistant Wild A. kiusianus Reveal Insights into Stem Blight Disease Resistance

Phomopsis asparagi is one of the most serious fungal pathogens, which causes stem blight disease in Asparagus officinalis (AO), adversely affecting its production worldwide. Recently, the development of novel asparagus varieties using wild Asparagus genetic resources with natural P. asparagi resistance has become a priority in Japan due to the lack of resistant commercial AO cultivars. In this study, comparative metabolome and transcriptome analyses of susceptible AO and resistant wild Asparagus kiusianus (AK) 24 and 48 h postinoculated (AOI_24 hpi, AOI_48 hpi, AKI_24 hpi and AKI_48 hpi, respectively) with P. asparagi were conducted to gain insights into metabolic and expression changes associated with AK species. Following infection, the resistant wild AK showed rapid metabolic changes with increased levels of flavonoids and steroidal saponins and decreased asparagusic acid glucose ester content, compared with the susceptible AO plants. Transcriptome data revealed a total of 21  differentially expressed genes (DEGs) as the core gene set that displayed upregulation in the resistant AK versus susceptible AO after infection with P. asparagi. Kyoto Encyclopedia of Genes and Genomes pathway analysis of these DEGs identified 11 significantly enriched pathways, including flavonoid biosynthesis and primary metabolite metabolism, in addition to plant signaling and defense-related pathways. In addition, comparative single-nucleotide polymorphism and Indel distributions in susceptible AO and resistant AK plants were evaluated using the latest AO reference genome Aspof.V1. The data generated in this study are important resources for advancing Asparagus breeding programs and for investigations of genetic linkage mapping, phylogenetic diversity and plant defense-related genes.

Mammographic Breast Density Profile of Jordanian Women With Normal and Breast Cancer Findings

Purpose:

To document the mammographic breast density (MBD) distribution of Jordanian women and the relationship with MBD with age. Correlation between breast cancer diagnosis and density was also explored.

Methods:

A retrospective review of 660 screening mammograms from King Abdullah University Hospital was conducted. Mammograms were classified into 2 groups: normal (return to routine screening) and breast cancer and rated using the American College of Radiology (ACR) Breast Imaging-Reporting and Data System (BI-RADS) 5th edition for MBD. The association between MBD and age was assessed by descriptive analyses and Kruskal-Wallis test. To compare between normal and breast cancer groups, chi-square post hoc tests with Bonferroni adjustment was used.

Results:

Groups consisted of 73.9% (n = 488) normal group and 26.1% (n = 172) breast cancer group. A significant inverse relationship was demonstrated between age and MBD among the normal (r = −.319, P < .01) and breast cancer group (r = −.569, P < .01). In total, 69% (n = 336) of women in the normal group and 71% (n = 122) in the breast cancer group and 79.1% (n = 159) of the normal group and 100% (n = 48) of the breast cancer group aged 40 to 49 years reported high MBD (ACR BI-RADS c or d).

Conclusions:

Most of women in both the normal and breast cancer groups evidenced increased MBD. Increased MBD was inversely proportional to age. As MBD has a known link to increased breast cancer risk and the decreased sensitivity of mammography and it is vital that future screening guidelines for Jordanian women consider the unique breast density distribution of this population.

Heat Sensing and Lipid Reprograming as a Signaling Switch for Heat Stress Responses in Wheat

Temperature is an essential physical factor that affects the plant life cycle. Almost all plant species have evolved a robust signal transduction system that enables them to sense changes in the surrounding temperature, relay this message and accordingly adjust their metabolism and cellular functions to avoid heat stress-related damage. Wheat (Triticum aestivum), being a cool-season crop, is very sensitive to heat stress. Any increase in the ambient temperature, especially at the reproductive and grain-filling stages, can cause a drastic loss in wheat yield. Heat stress causes lipid peroxidation due to oxidative stress, resulting in the damage of thylakoid membranes and the disruption of their function, which ultimately decreases photosynthesis and crop yield. The cell membrane/plasma membrane plays prominent roles as an interface system that perceives and translates the changes in environmental signals into intracellular responses. Thus, membrane lipid composition is a critical factor in heat stress tolerance or susceptibility in wheat. In this review, we elucidate the possible involvement of calcium influx as an early heat stress-responsive mechanism in wheat plants. In addition, the physiological implications underlying the changes in lipid metabolism under high-temperature stress in wheat and other plant species will be discussed. In-depth knowledge about wheat lipid reprograming can help develop heat-tolerant wheat varieties and provide approaches to solve the impact of global climate change.

Acetic acid improves drought acclimation in soybean: an integrative response of photosynthesis, osmoregulation, mineral uptake and antioxidant defense

Insights into acetate-mediated copper homeostasis and antioxidant defense in lentil under excessive copper stress

Gradual contamination of agricultural land with copper (Cu), due to the indiscriminate uses of fungicides and pesticides, and the discharge of industrial waste to the environment, poses a high threat for soil degradation and consequently food crop production. In this study, we combined morphological, physiological and biochemical assays to investigate the mechanisms underlying acetate-mediated Cu toxicity tolerance in lentil. Results demonstrated that high dose of Cu (3.0 mM CuSO₄. 5H₂O) reduced seedling growth and chlorophyll content, while augmenting Cu contents in both roots and shoots, and increasing oxidative damage in lentil plants through disruption of the antioxidant defense. Principle component analysis clearly indicated that Cu accumulation and increased oxidative damage were the key factors for Cu toxicity in lentil seedlings. However, acetate pretreatment reduced Cu accumulation in roots and shoots, increased proline content and improved the responses of antioxidant defense (e.g. increased catalase and glutathione-S-transferase activities, and improved action of glutathione-ascorbate metabolic pathway). As a result, excess Cu-induced oxidative damage was reduced, and seedling growth was improved under Cu stress conditions, indicating the role of acetate in alleviating Cu toxicity in lentil seedlings. Taken together, exogenous acetate application reduced Cu accumulation in lentil roots and shoots and mitigated oxidative damage by activating the antioxidant defense, which were the major determinants for alleviating Cu toxicity in lentil seedlings. Our findings provide mechanistic insights into the protective roles of acetate in mitigating Cu toxicity in lentil, and suggest that application of acetate could be a novel and economical strategy for the management of heavy metal toxicity and accumulation in crops.

Heat stress effects on source-sink relationships and metabolome dynamics in wheat

Crops such as wheat (Triticum spp.) are predicted to face more frequent exposures to heat stress as a result of climate change. Increasing the yield and sustainability of yield under such stressful conditions has long been a major target of wheat breeding, and this goal is becoming increasingly urgent as the global population increases. Exposure of wheat plants in their reproductive or grain-filling stage to high temperature affects the duration and rate of grain filling, and hence has a negative impact on wheat productivity. Therefore, understanding the plasticity of the response to heat stress that exists between wheat genotypes, especially in source-sink relationships at the reproductive and grain-filling stages, is critical for the selection of germplasm that can maintain high yields under heat stress. A broad understanding of metabolic dynamics and the relationships between metabolism and heat tolerance is required in order to achieve this goal. Here, we review the current literature concerning the effects of heat stress on sink-source relationships in a wide range of wheat genotypes, and highlight the current metabolomic approaches that are used to investigate high temperature responses in wheat.

Divergent metabolic adjustments in nodules are indispensable for efficient N2 fixation of soybean under phosphate stress

The main objective of the present study was to characterize the symbiotic N2 fixation (SNF) capacity and to elucidate the underlying mechanisms for low-Pi acclimation in soybean plants grown in association with two Bradyrhizobium diazoefficiens strains which differ in SNF capacity (USDA110 vs. CB1809). In comparison with the USDA110-soybean, the CB1809-soybean association revealed a greater SNF capacity in response to Pi starvation, as evidenced by relative higher plant growth and higher expression levels of the nifHDK genes. This enhanced Pi acclimation was partially related to the efficient utilization to the overall carbon (C) budget of symbiosis in the CB1809-induced nodules compared with that of the USDA110-induced nodules under low-Pi provision. In contrast, the USDA110-induced nodules favored other metabolic acclimation mechanisms that expend substantial C cost, and consequently cause negative implications on nodule C expenditure during low-Pi conditions. Fatty acids, phytosterols and secondary metabolites are characterized among the metabolic pathways involved in nodule acclimation under Pi starvation. While USDA110-soybean association performed better under Pi sufficiency, it is very likely that the CB1809-soybean association is better acclimatized to cope with Pi deficiency owing to the more effective functional plasticity and lower C cost associated with these nodular metabolic arrangements.

Stay-Green Trait: A Prospective Approach for Yield Potential, and Drought and Heat Stress Adaptation in Globally Important Cereals

The yield losses in cereal crops because of abiotic stress and the expected huge losses from climate change indicate our urgent need for useful traits to achieve food security. The stay-green (SG) is a secondary trait that enables crop plants to maintain their green leaves and photosynthesis capacity for a longer time after anthesis, especially under drought and heat stress conditions. Thus, SG plants have longer grain-filling period and subsequently higher yield than non-SG. SG trait was recognized as a superior characteristic for commercially bred cereal selection to overcome the current yield stagnation in alliance with yield adaptability and stability. Breeding for functional SG has contributed in improving crop yields, particularly when it is combined with other useful traits. Thus, elucidating the molecular and physiological mechanisms associated with SG trait is maybe the key to defeating the stagnation in productivity associated with adaptation to environmental stress. This review discusses the recent advances in SG as a crucial trait for genetic improvement of the five major cereal crops, sorghum, wheat, rice, maize, and barley with particular emphasis on the physiological consequences of SG trait. Finally, we provided perspectives on future directions for SG research that addresses present and future global challenges.

Accuracy among Jordanian and Australian radiologists reading the same set of test screening cases

Aim: To investigate how breast radiologists from Jordan and Australia differ in accuracy when examining the set of test screening cases. Materials & methods: A total of 27 Jordanian and 115 Australian breast radiologists were requested to read 60 mammographic images and to indicate the location of any perceived lesion and record a confidence level ranging from 1 to 5. Jackknife alternative free-response receiver operating characteristic, location sensitivity and specificity were calculated and compared for both Australian and Jordanian readers. Results: Australian readers achieved significantly higher readings accuracy than Jordanian readers retrospectively in terms of Jackknife alternative free-response receiver operating characteristic (75th percentile values: 0.863 vs 0.600; p = 0.001) and location sensitivity (75th percentile values 0.673 vs 0.571; p = 0.022). Conclusion: Australian radiologists achieved higher performance in reading breast mammograms than Jordanian radiologists.

Alleviation of the effect of salinity on growth and yield of strawberry by foliar spray of selenium-nanoparticles

The present study investigated the beneficial role of selenium-nanoparticles (Se-NPs) in mitigating the adverse effects of soil-salinity on growth and yield of strawberry (Fragaria × ananassa Duch.) plants by maneuvering physiological and biochemical mechanisms. The foliar spray of Se-NPs (10 and 20 mg L^-1) improved the growth and yield parameters of strawberry plants grown on non-saline and different saline soils (0, 25, 50 and 75 mM NaCl), which was attributed to their ability to protect photosynthetic pigments. Se-NPs-treated strawberry plants exhibited higher levels of key osmolytes, including total soluble carbohydrates and free proline, compared with untreated plants under saline conditions. Foliar application of Se-NPs improved salinity tolerance in strawberry by reducing stress-induced lipid peroxidation and H₂O₂ content through enhancing activities of antioxidant enzymes like superoxide dismutase and peroxidase. Additionally, Se-NPs-treated strawberry plants showed accumulation of indole-3-acetic acid and abscisic acid, the vital stress signaling molecules, which are involved in regulating different morphological, physiological and molecular responses of plants to salinity. Moreover, the enhanced levels of organic acids (e.g., malic, citric and succinic acids) and sugars (e.g., glucose, fructose and sucrose) in the fruits of Se-NPs-treated strawberry plants under saline conditions indicated the positive impacts of Se-NPs on the improvement of fruit quality and nutritional values. Our results collectively demonstrate the definite roles of Se-NPs in management of soil salinity-induced adverse effects on not only strawberry plants but also other crops.

Predictors of early recipient mortality after living donor liver transplantation in a tertiary care center in Egypt

BACKGROUND

Living donor liver transplantation (LDLT) has evolved into a widely accepted therapeutic option. Many different risk factors may affect early mortality after LDLT.

OBJECTIVES

Analyze risk factors that can affect early (<6 months) mortality of patients after LDLT in a single center.

DESIGN

Retrospective chart review of patients who underwent LDLT.

SETTING

University hospital.

PATIENTS AND METHODS

Adult cirrhotic patients who underwent LDLT were classified by early (first 6 months) or late mortality. A full pre, intra- and post-operative evaluation had been done on all patients including a full history, examination and investigations to identify risk factors that might affect mortality post-LDLT.

MAIN OUTCOME MEASURES

Determination of pre-, intra- or postoperative factors that might affect recipient mortality post-LDLT.

RESULTS

Pre-operative factors that increased early mortality in a univariate analysis were higher model for end-stage liver disease (MELD) scores, lower graft-recipient weigh ratio (GRWR), older donor age, and recurrent spontaneous bacterial peritonitis. Intraoperative factors included more transfusion units of blood, plasma, platelets and cryoprecipitate, a longer time for cold and warm ischemia, and a longer anhepatic phase among others. Postoperative factors included a longer ICU or hospital stay and abnormal postoperative laboratory data. In the final logistic regression model, the most significant factors were pre-operative GRWR, length of hospital stay, units of intraoperative blood transfusion, postoperative alanine aminotransferase, postoperative total leukocyte count, and MELD score.

CONCLUSION

LDLT outcomes might be improved by attempting to resolve clinical factors that have been identified as contributors to early post-LDLT mortality.

LIMITATIONS

More risk factors, such as those relevant to patient portal vein hemodynamics, should be included in an analysis of predictors of early mortality.

Establishment of diagnostic reference levels in cardiac computed tomography

The aim of this study was to determine diagnostic reference levels (DRLs) for cardiac computed tomography (CCT) in Jordan. Volume computed tomography dose index (CTDI_vol) and dose–length product (DLP) were collected from 228 CCTs performed at seven Jordanian hospitals specialized in cardiac CT. DRLs for cardiac CT were defined at the 75th percentile of CTDI_vol and DLP. CTDI_vol and DLP were collected from 30 successive cardiac CT in each center except for one center (18 scans). The 75th percentile of the CTDI_vol and the DLP of the centers calculated from mixed retrospective and prospective gated modes were 47.74 milligray (mGy) and 1035 mGy/cm, respectively. This study demonstrated wide dose variations among the surveyed hospitals for cardiac CT scans; there was a 5.1‐fold difference between the highest and lowest median DLP with a range of 223.2–1146.7 mGy/cm. Differences were associated with variations in the mAs and kVp. This study confirmed large variability in CTDI_vol and DLP for cardiac CT scans; variation was associated with acquisition protocols and highlights the need for dose optimization. DRLs are proposed for CCT; there remains substantial potential for optimization of cardiac CT examinations for adults in Jordan.

Diagnostic reference levels for paediatric CT in Jordan

This study aimed to investigate the current status of Diagnostic Reference Levels (DRLs) in paediatric CT across Jordan. The dose data for four main CT examinations (brain, chest, abdominopelvic, and chest, abdomen and pelvis (CAP)) in hospitals and imaging centres (n = 4) were measured. The volume CT dose index (CTDIvol) and Dose Length Product (DLP) values were compared within the different hospitals and age groups (<1 year, 1-4 years, 5-10 years and 11-18 years). DRLs in Jordan were compared to international DRLs. The paediatric population consisted of 1818 children; 61.4% of them were male. There were significant variations between the DRLs for each CT scanner with an up to four-fold difference in dose between hospitals. There were apparent significant differences between Jordan and other countries with the DLPs in Jordan being relatively high. However, for CTDIvol, the values in Jordan were close to those of other countries. This study confirmed variations in the CTDIvol and DLP values of paediatric CT scans in Jordan. These variations were attributed to the different protocols and equipment used. There is a need to optimise paediatric CT examinations doses in Jordan.

Harnessing Genome Editing Techniques to Engineer Disease Resistance in Plants

Modern genome editing (GE) techniques, which include clustered regularly interspaced short palindromic repeat (CRISPR)/CRISPR-associated protein 9 (CRISPR/Cas9) system, transcription activator-like effector nucleases (TALENs), zinc-finger nucleases (ZFNs) and LAGLIDADG homing endonucleases (meganucleases), have so far been used for engineering disease resistance in crops. The use of GE technologies has grown very rapidly in recent years with numerous examples of targeted mutagenesis in crop plants, including gene knockouts, knockdowns, modifications, and the repression and activation of target genes. CRISPR/Cas9 supersedes all other GE techniques including TALENs and ZFNs for editing genes owing to its unprecedented efficiency, relative simplicity and low risk of off-target effects. Broad-spectrum disease resistance has been engineered in crops by GE of either specific host-susceptibility genes (S gene approach), or cleaving DNA of phytopathogens (bacteria, virus or fungi) to inhibit their proliferation. This review focuses on different GE techniques that can potentially be used to boost molecular immunity and resistance against different phytopathogens in crops, ultimately leading to the development of promising disease-resistant crop varieties.
