Genotype × birth type or rearing-type interactions for growth and ultrasound scanning traits in Merino sheep

This study explores the interaction between genetic potential for growth in Merino lambs and their birth type (BT) or rearing type (RT). Data on birthweight (BWT), weaning weight (WWT), post-weaning weight (PWWT), scan fat (PFAT) and eye muscle depth (PEMD) were used from 3920 single and 4492 twin-born lambs from 285 sires and 5279 dams. Univariate analysis showed a significant sire × BT interaction accounting for 1.59% and 2.49% of the phenotypic variation for BWT and WWT, respectively, and no significant effect for PWWT, PFAT and PEMD. Sire × RT interaction effects were much smaller and only significant for PEMD. Bivariate analysis indicated that the genetic correlation (rg) between trait expression in lambs born and reared as singles versus those born and reared as twins were high for BWT, WWT, PWWT (0.91 ± 0.02 – 0.96 ± 0.01), whereas rg for PFAT and PEMD were lower (0.81 ± 0.03 and 0.86 ± 0.02). The rg between traits expressed in lambs born and reared as singles versus those born as twins but reared as singles were lower: 0.77 ± 0.08, 0.88 ± 0.03, 0.66 ± 0.06 and 0.61 ± 0.08 for WWT, PWWT, PFAT and PEMD, respectively. A different RT only affected the expression of breeding values for PFAT and PEMD (rg 0.62 ± 0.04 and 0.47 ± 0.03, respectively). This study showed genotype × environment interaction for BWT and WWT (sire × BT interaction) and for PEMD (sire by RT interaction). However, sires’ breeding value of a model that accounts for sire × BT interaction provides a very similar ranking of sires compared with a model that ignores it, implying that there is no need to correct for the effect in models for genetic evaluation.

Genomic prediction of weight and wool traits in a multi-breed sheep population

The objective of this study was to predict the accuracy of genomic prediction for 26 traits, including weight, muscle, fat, and wool quantity and quality traits, in Australian sheep based on a large, multi-breed reference population. The reference population consisted of two research flocks, with the main breeds being Merino, Border Leicester (BL), Poll Dorset (PD), and White Suffolk (WS). The genomic estimated breeding value (GEBV) was based on GBLUP (genomic best linear unbiased prediction), applying a genomic relationship matrix calculated from the 50K Ovine SNP chip marker genotypes. The accuracy of GEBV was evaluated as the Pearson correlation coefficient between GEBV and accurate estimated breeding value based on progeny records in a set of genotyped industry animals. The accuracies of weight traits were relatively low to moderate in PD and WS breeds (0.11–0.27) and moderate to relatively high in BL and Merino (0.25–0.63). The accuracy of muscle and fat traits was moderate to relatively high across all breeds (between 0.21 and 0.55). The accuracy of GEBV of yearling and adult wool traits in Merino was, on average, high (0.33–0.75). The results showed the accuracy of genomic prediction depends on trait heritability and the effective size of the reference population, whereas the observed GEBV accuracies were more related to the breed proportions in the multi-breed reference population. No extra gain in within-breed GEBV accuracy was observed based on across breed information. More investigations are required to determine the precise effect of across-breed information on within-breed genomic prediction.

Occurrence of gastrointestinal helminths in Bactrian camel in Iran

A study on naturally acquired gastrointestinal helminthic parasites in Bactrian camel was carried out in Ardabil province, northwest of Iran, which is the main site of this species in Iran. This species has importance in Iran due to its low population. A total of 25 faecal samples (25% of population) were examined by Clayton Lane method to determine the egg count of different types of helminths in different age groups. Helminth eggs were found in 13 (52%) of the faecal samples (0-191 eggs/gm, 51.96±13.82). Bactrian camels were infected with Nematodirus sp. (32%), Trichuris sp. (32%), Marshallagia sp. (28%), Moniezia sp. (28%) and Strongyloides sp. (16%). The age of the infected Bactrian camels was significantly higher than the non-infected camels (p<0.01) and there was a significant correlation between age and the intensity of infection (r=0.583, p=0.002). No significant difference in the ratio of the affected camels and in the intensity of infection was found between the two sexes. The results of the current study showed that helminthic infection is a serious problem in this animal in Iran.

Clinico-pathological studies in cattle experimentally infected with Taenia saginata eggs

Calves 1-2 months old were experimentally infected with eggs of Taenia saginata and clinical and haematological deviations, development and distribution of cysticerci and pathological changes were recorded. The calves infected with 5,000, 10,000 or 50,000 eggs showed an increase in pulse and respiratory rates. The animals that received 50,000 eggs had significantly increased pulse (p < 0.05) and respiratory rates (p < 0.005). The symptoms were more severe in young, 30-day-old calves infected with 50,000 eggs. Haemoglobin concentration, haematocrit values and red blood cell count decreased, but white blood cell count increased slightly. Lymphocytes and eosinophils also increased up to 88% and 14% (p < 0.05), respectively. Most of the cysticerci were not fully formed 1 month post-infection, but at 2 months the cysts were fully mature and at 4 months, some cysts had degenerated. There was no uniform pattern of distribution of cysticerci in the body of infected calves, but the most commonly affected sites were masseter and heart muscles, followed by diaphragm, tongue and other skeletal muscles. The maximum concentration of 8-14 cysticerci per 10 g of tissue was recorded in masseter muscles and heart. The affected parts revealed tissue reactions that included pressure atrophy, necrosis and fibrosis. Microscopically, the lesions comprised infiltration with lymphocytes, plasma cells, eosinophils and macrophages, fibrosis, necrosis and calcification. The tissue reaction was severe in calves infected with 50,000 eggs. The severity of clinical signs, haematological and pathological changes depended mostly on the age of the animals and dose of infection.

The distribution pattern of Sarcocystis species, their transmission and pathogenesis in sheep in Fars Province of Iran

Of 1362 sheep examined during two years in Fars Province of Iran, 786 (57.7%) were positive for Sarcocystis spp. The prevalence was significantly higher (p < 0.05) in animals owned by nomadie Assyrians (67.95%) than in those owned by local people (41.86%). More of the animals above 2 years age were infected (69.98%) than young ones (30.02%). Females had a higher prevalence of infection (61.07%) than males (38.93%) but most of the males were younger. There was no variation in the infection rate during spring, summer or autumn, but it was low in winter. The species observed were Sarcocystis gigantea, predominantly in oesophagus, S. medusiformis, mainly in diaphragm, S. tenella in the oesophagus, diaphragm, tongue and heart, and S. arieticanis in the oesophagus, tongue and occasionally in the diaphragm. In transmission studies, the prepatent period for S. gigantea and S. medusiformis and for the two microscopic species was 11-13, 10 and 8-12 days, respectively. The infection could not be transmitted to hamsters and guinea-pigs. The macroscopic species were almost non-pathogenic but were responsible for economic losses because of rejection of carcases or parts thereof at slaughter. The microscopic species caused tissue damage to the affected organs, resulting in haemorrhages, mononuclear infiltration and necrotic changes.

Taenia saginata cysticercosis in cattle with special reference to its prevalence, pathogenesis and economic implications in Fars Province of Iran

The study was carried out during a 3-year period. Of 9501 cattle examined, 736 (7.7%) were infected with cysticerci of Taenia saginata. The endemic foci were identified and prevalence was significantly higher (P < 0.005) in animals from Noorabad Mammasani (10.7%), Kenareh (10.0%) and Shiraz area (8.5%) than elsewhere. The prevalence was significantly higher (P < 0.005) during spring and autumn seasons. There was no variation in the infection rate in animals of different age groups, suggesting that immunity was acquired to super-infection. The most common sites were muscle of the shoulder (26.3%) and masseter (23.7%), tongue (24.9%) and heart (23.4%). Pharynx, oesophagus and diaphragm showed 0.9, 0.5 and 0.4% infection, respectively. The metacestode caused extensive damage resulting in infiltrative, degenerative changes, haemorrhages, necrosis and exudation mainly in the vicinity of cysts. The infection was the cause of condemnation of 34.6% of infected carcases. The rejected carcases and infected organs were valued at 100.1 million Rials over the 3-year period.

Metacestodes of sheep with special reference to their epidemiological status, pathogenesis and economic implications in Fars Province, Iran

This study was undertaken over a period of 2 years. Of 7992 sheep examined, 2088 (26.12%), 2266 (28.36%), 15 (0.19%) and 738 (9.8%) were infected with Echinococcus granulosus, Taenia hydatigena, Taenia ovis and Taenia multiceps metacestodes, respectively. The prevalence was higher in animals belonging to migratory tribal people than in those owned by the permanent residents of Fars Province. Dogs in the former group also showed significantly higher levels of infection with E. granulosus (33.3%) and Taenia spp. (40.7%) than those in the latter group. The metacestodes caused tissue damage in different organs, resulting in condemnation of meat or viscera valued at 10.2 million rials. The migration of tribal people has a direct bearing on the transmission of these parasites and must be taken into account in control planning.
