Ti3AlC2 MAX Phase Modified Screen-Printed Electrode for the Fabrication of Hydrazine Sensor

Hydrazine is considered a powerful reducing agent and catalyst, showing diverse applications in agricultural industries, toxic degradation research, and wastewater management. Additionally, hydrazine can trigger some specific reactions when combined with suitable oxidants. Due to its highly polar nature, hydrazine can easily dissolve in alcohol, water, and various other polar solvents. Therefore, it can be extensively utilized in different areas of application and industries such as rocketry and various chemical applications. Despite its beneficial properties, hydrazine is unstable, posing significant risk due to its highly toxic nature. It is extremely hazardous to both human health and the environment. It can cause various illnesses and symptoms such as dizziness, temporary blindness, damage to the central nervous system, and even death when inhaled in sufficient quantities. Therefore, it is highly important to monitor the level of hydrazine to prevent its toxic and hazardous effects on human beings and the environment. In the present study, we discuss the simple fabrication of a disposable cost-effective and eco-friendly hydrazine sensor. We used a screen-printed carbon electrode, i.e., SPCE, as a base for the construction of a hydrazine sensor. The Ti3AlC2 MAX has been used as a suitable and efficient electrode material for the fabrication of disposable hydrazine sensors. We modified the active surface of the SPCE using a drop-casting approach. The resulting Ti3AlC2 MAX modified SPCE (Ti3AlC2@SPCE) has been utilized as an efficient and low-cost hydrazine sensor. Cyclic voltammetry, i.e., CV, and linear sweep voltammetry, viz., LSV, was employed as a sensing technique in this study. The optimization of pH and electrode material loading was conducted. The Ti3AlC2@SPCE exhibited excellent sensing performance toward hydrazine oxidation. A reasonable detection limit (0.01 µM) was achieved for hydrazine sensing. The fabricated sensor also demonstrated a reasonable linear range of 1-50 µM. This work provides the design and fabrication of simple disposable Ti3AlC2@SPCE as a suitable electrode for the determination of hydrazine using LSV technology.

Study of High-Transverse-Momentum Higgs Boson Production in Association with a Vector Boson in the qqbb Final State with the ATLAS Detector

This Letter presents the first study of Higgs boson production in association with a vector boson (V=W or Z) in the fully hadronic qqbb final state using data recorded by the ATLAS detector at the LHC in proton-proton collisions at sqrt[s]=13  TeV and corresponding to an integrated luminosity of 137  fb^{-1}. The vector bosons and Higgs bosons are each reconstructed as large-radius jets and tagged using jet substructure techniques. Dedicated tagging algorithms exploiting b-tagging properties are used to identify jets consistent with Higgs bosons decaying into bb[over ¯]. Dominant backgrounds from multijet production are determined directly from the data, and a likelihood fit to the jet mass distribution of Higgs boson candidates is used to extract the number of signal events. The VH production cross section is measured inclusively and differentially in several ranges of Higgs boson transverse momentum: 250-450, 450-650, and greater than 650 GeV. The inclusive signal yield relative to the standard model expectation is observed to be μ=1.4_{-0.9}^{+1.0} and the corresponding cross section is 3.1±1.3(stat)_{-1.4}^{+1.8}(syst)  pb.

Measurement of the Centrality Dependence of the Dijet Yield in p+Pb Collisions at sqrt[s_{NN}]=8.16 TeV with the ATLAS Detector

ATLAS measured the centrality dependence of the dijet yield using 165  nb^{-1} of p+Pb data collected at sqrt[s_{NN}]=8.16  TeV in 2016. The event centrality, which reflects the p+Pb impact parameter, is characterized by the total transverse energy registered in the Pb-going side of the forward calorimeter. The central-to-peripheral ratio of the scaled dijet yields, R_{CP}, is evaluated, and the results are presented as a function of variables that reflect the kinematics of the initial hard parton scattering process. The R_{CP} shows a scaling with the Bjorken x of the parton originating from the proton, x_{p}, while no such trend is observed as a function of x_{Pb}. This analysis provides unique input to understanding the role of small proton spatial configurations in p+Pb collisions by covering parton momentum fractions from the valence region down to x_{p}∼10^{-3} and x_{Pb}∼4×10^{-4}.

In Situ Fabrication and Characterization of g-C3N4 onto Cellulose Nanofibers and Selective Separation of Heavy Metal Ions

Graphitic carbon nitride nanosheets were synthesized onto cellulose nanofiber surfaces utilizing an eco-friendly salt melt approach. The fabricated material CNF@C3N4 selectively removes Ni(II) and Cu(II) from electroplating wastewater samples. The immobilization of g-C3N4 on solid substrates eases handling of nanomaterial in a flow-through approach and mitigates sorbent loss during column operations. Characterization techniques such as scanning electron microscopy, tunneling electron microscopy, and X-ray photoelectron microscopy were employed to analyze the surface morphology and chemical bonding within the synthesized material. Selective Cu(II) and Ni(II) sorption predominantly arises from the soft-soft interaction between metal ions and associated nitrogen groups. An inner-sphere surface complexation mechanism effectively elucidated the interaction dynamics between the metal and CNF@C3N4. Experimental findings demonstrated satisfactory separation of Ni(II) and Cu(II) ions, with the extraction of 340.0 and 385.0 mg g-1 of material, respectively. Additionally, the devised technique was executed for the preconcentration and quantification of trace metals ions in water samples with a detection limit and limit of quantification of 0.06 and 0.20 μg L-1, respectively.

Preconcentration and selective extraction of trace Hg(ii) by polymeric g-C3N4 nanosheet-packed SPE column

In this study, we successfully synthesized polymeric graphitic carbon nitride (g-C3N4) nanosheets through thermal means and proposed their application in solid-phase extraction (SPE) for the enrichment of trace Hg(ii). The nanosheets underwent characterization using scanning electron microscopy, tunnelling electron microscopy, and energy-dispersive X-ray spectroscopy. The column packed with polymeric carbon nitride nanosheets demonstrated effective extraction of trace Hg(ii) ions from complex samples. The g-C3N4 nanosheets possess a zeta potential value of -20 mV, enabling strong interaction with positively charged divalent Hg(ii) ions. This interaction leads to the formation of stable chelates with the nitrogen atoms present in the polytriazine and heptazine units of the material. The proposed method exhibited a high preconcentration limit of 0.33 μg L-1, making it suitable for analysing trace amounts of Hg(ii) ions. Moreover, the method's applicability was confirmed through successful analysis of real samples, achieving an impressive preconcentration factor of 200. The detection limit for trace Hg(ii) ions was determined to be 0.6 μg L-1. To assess the accuracy of the method, we evaluated its performance by recovering spiked amounts of Hg(ii) and by analysing certified reference materials. The results indicated excellent precision, with RSD consistently below 5% for all the analyses conducted. In conclusion, the thermally synthesized polymeric carbon nitride nanosheets present a promising approach for solid-phase extraction and preconcentration of trace Hg(ii) from real samples. The method showcases high efficiency, sensitivity, and accuracy, making it a valuable tool for environmental and analytical applications.

Combined Measurement of the Higgs Boson Mass from the H→γγ and H→ZZ^{*}→4ℓ Decay Channels with the ATLAS Detector Using sqrt[s]=7, 8, and 13 TeV pp Collision Data

A measurement of the mass of the Higgs boson combining the H→ZZ^{*}→4ℓ and H→γγ decay channels is presented. The result is based on 140  fb^{-1} of proton-proton collision data collected by the ATLAS detector during LHC run 2 at a center-of-mass energy of 13 TeV combined with the run 1 ATLAS mass measurement, performed at center-of-mass energies of 7 and 8 TeV, yielding a Higgs boson mass of 125.11±0.09(stat)±0.06(syst)=125.11±0.11  GeV. This corresponds to a 0.09% precision achieved on this fundamental parameter of the Standard Model of particle physics.

A two-generational reproductive study to assess the effects of Juglans regia on reproductive developments in the male and female rats

Environmental pollutants and lifestyle severely threaten human and animal health, leading to disturbances of various functions, including infertility. So, exploring a safe treatment that could effectively reverse infertility remains a challenge. The current study was intended to explore the fertility-enhancing effect of Juglans Regia oil in two successive generations of rats; F0 and F1. J. Regia oil was initially tested for in vitro antioxidant assay via ROS and DPPH, followed by in vivo toxicity testing. In the fertility assessment, eighteen pairs of male and female rats (n=36, 1:1, F0 generation) were divided into three groups and dosed with 1 mL/kg and 2 mL/kg daily of J. Regia oil and saline, respectively, up to pre-cohabitation, cohabitation, gestation and lactation periods. The reproductive performance, including body weight, live birth index, fertility index, and litter size, was assessed. Hormonal and antioxidant markers of F1 generations were assessed with the histopathological evaluation of male and female organs. The oil of J. Regia showed great antioxidant potential (P < 0.05) in DPPH (1,1-diphenyl-2-picrylhydrazyl) and ROS (Reactive Oxygen Species) methods (P<0.05). The continued exposure of the F0 and F1 generations to J. Regia oil did not affect body weight, fertility index, litter size, and survival index. We have found pronounced fertility outcomes in both genders of F0 and F1 generations with J. Regia 2 mL/kg/day in comparison to the control. Results showed that J. Regia significantly increased (P < 0.05) luteinizing hormone (LH), plasma testosterone, follicular stimulating hormone (FSH), glutathione peroxidase (GPx) and superoxide dismutase (SOD) activities in both generations. Histology of both generations reveals improved spermatogenesis and folliculogenesis with enhanced architecture. Altogether, the present results suggest that J. Regia improved fertility in both male and female rats by improving hormonal activities and oxidative stress.

Fabrication of an Azithromycin Sensor

Azithromycin (AZY) is a well-known top-prioritized antibiotic and is used by humans in strong concentrations. However, the side effects of the AZY antibiotic may cause some serious and significant damage to humans and the environment. Thus, there is a need to develop effective and sensitive sensors to monitor accurate concentrations of AZY. In the last decade, electrochemistry-based sensors have received enormous attention from the scientific community because of their high sensitivity, selectivity, cost-effectiveness, fast response, rapid detection response, simple fabrication, and working principle. It is important to mention that electrochemical sensors rely on the properties of electrode modifiers. Hence, the selection of electrode materials is of great significance when designing and developing efficient and robust electrochemical sensors. In this study, we fabricated an AZY sensor by utilizing a molybdenum disulfide/titanium aluminum carbide (MoS2@Ti3AlC2) composite as the electrode material. The MoS2@Ti3AlC2 composite was synthesized via a simple sonication process. The synthesized MoS2@Ti3AlC2 composite was characterized using a powder X-ray diffraction (XRD) method to examine the phase purity and formation of the MoS2@Ti3AlC2 composite. Scanning electron microscopy (SEM) was used to study the surface morphological features of the prepared MoS2@Ti3AlC2 composite, whereas energy dispersive X-ray spectroscopy (EDAX) was adopted to determine the elemental composition of the prepared MoS2@Ti3AlC2 composite. The glassy carbon (GC) electrode was modified with the prepared MoS2@Ti3AlC2 composite and applied as the AZY sensor. The sensing performance of the MoS2@Ti3AlC2 composite-modified GC electrode was studied using linear sweep voltammetry. The sensor demonstrated excellent performance when determining AZY and showed a good detection limit of 0.009 µM with a sensitivity of 6.77 µA/µM.cm2.

Green Synthesis of Copper Oxide Nanoparticles from the Leaves of Aegle marmelos and Their Antimicrobial Activity and Photocatalytic Activities

The leaves of the Aegle marmelos plant were used for the green synthesis of copper oxide nanoparticles and further characterized by different techniques, including (Ultra Violet-Visible) UV-Vis, Scanning electron microscopy (SEM), Energy dispersive X-ray (EDX), Transmission electron microscopy (TEM) and X-ray diffraction (XRD). The UV-Vis showed a peak at 330 nm, which may be due to the Surface Plasmon Resonance phenomenon. XRD analysis showed the crystalline nature of copper oxide nanoparticles (CuO NPs). In contrast, SEM showed that nanoparticles were not aggregated or clumped, EDX showed the presence of elemental copper., and further, the TEM analysis revealed the average particle size of copper oxide nanoparticles to be 32 nm. The Minimum Inhibitory Concentration (MIC) for Escherichia coli (E. coli) and Staphylococcusaureus (S. aureus) was found to be 400 µg/mL, whereas for Candida albicans (C. albicans) and Candida dubliniensis (C. dubliniensis) it was 800 µg/mL. The zone of inhibition in the well diffusion assay showed the antimicrobial activity of copper oxide nanoparticles, and it also showed that as the concentration of copper oxide nanoparticles increased, the zone of inhibition also increased. Further, the electron microscopic view of the interaction between copper oxide nanoparticles and C. albicans cells showed that CuO NPs were internalized and attached to the cell membrane, which caused changes in the cellular structure and caused deformities which eventually led to cell death. The prepared CuO NPs showed significant photocatalytic degradation of organic dyes in the presence of sunlight.

MoS2/S@g-CN Composite Electrode for L-Tryptophan Sensing

L-tryptophan (L-TRP) is an essential amino acid responsible for the establishment and maintenance of a positive nitrogen equilibrium in the nutrition of human beings. Therefore, it is vital to quantify the amount of L-tryptophan in our body. Herein, we report the MoS2/S@g-CN-modified glassy carbon electrode for the electrochemical detection of L-tryptophan (L-TRP). The MoS2/S@g-CN composite was successfully synthesized using an efficient and cost-effective hydrothermal method. The physical and chemical properties of the synthesized composite were analyzed using powder X-ray diffraction (PXRD), scanning electron microscopy (SEM), X-ray photoelectron spectroscopy (XPS), and energy-dispersive X-ray analysis (EDX). The crystallite size of the composite was calculated as 39.4 nm, with porous balls of MoS2 decorated over the S@g-CN surface. The XPS spectrum confirmed the presence of Mo, S, O, C, and N elements in the sample. The synthesized nanocomposite was further used to modify the glassy carbon (GC) electrode (MoS2/S@g-CN/GC). This MoS2/S@g-CN/GC was used for the electrochemical detection of L-TRP using cyclic voltammetry (CV) and differential pulse voltammetry (DPV) techniques. For the purpose of comparison, the effects of the scanning rate and the concentration of L-TRP on the current response for the bare GC, S@g-CN/GC, MoS2/GC, and MoS2/S@g-CN/GC were studied in detail. The MoS2/S@g-CN-modified GC electrode exhibited a rational limit of detection (LoD) of 0.03 µM and a sensitivity of 1.74 µA/ µMcm2, with excellent stability, efficient repeatability, and high selectivity for L-TRP detection.

Recent advances in synthesis and characterization of iron-nickel bimetallic nanoparticles and their applications as photo-catalyst and fuel additive

Iron-nickel bimetallic nanoparticles (Fe-Ni BMNPs) are prepared by combining two different metals by using the bottom-up approach. The resulting material has entirely different properties as compared to both the metals. The product is examined by using different analytical instruments such as.; scanning electron microscope (SEM), transmission electron microscope (TEM), X-ray diffraction (XRD), MDIJADE, ORIGIN pro to characterize their morphology, crystallinity and elemental composition and the final data has been statistically analyzed. SEM findings show that most nanoparticles are irregular in form and range in size from 10 nm to 100 nm. The findings of the TEM verified that the particles between 10 nm and 50 nm are irregular in size shape. The products acquired utilized as a fuel additive to monitor oil effectiveness by studying various parameters. The degradation of methylene blue dye depends directly on the concentration of the nanocatalyst. Different parameters also use the freshly prepared bimetallic nanocatalyst to investigate the efficacy of the kerosene fuel. By adding a tiny quantity of the nanocatalyst, the value of the flash point and fire point is significantly reduced. The nanocatalyst does not affect the cloud point and pour point to a large extent. The bimetallic nanocatalyst therefore has very excellent catalytic characteristics.

Covalently linked mercaptoacetic acid on ZrO2 coupled cellulose nanofibers for solid phase extraction of Hg(ii): experimental and DFT studies

Zirconium oxide (ZrO₂) nanoparticles were introduced onto cellulose nanofibers after being covalently functionalized with mercaptoacetic acid. We experimentally demonstrate that the nanocomposite is capable of selectively capturing Hg(ii) from aqueous samples down to trace level concentrations. Density functional theory (DFT) calculations indicate that energetically favorable R-S → Hg ← O-R bidentate complex formation enhances the rapid adsorption, leading to selective extraction of Hg(ii). Furthermore, the loss of ZrO₂ particles during flow-through studies is controlled and restricted after binding to CNF rather than being used directly in the column. The Hg(ii) selectivity is primarily due to the Lewis soft-soft acid-base chelation of Hg(ii) with the mercapto functionalities of the adsorbent. The experimental observations depict a high sorption capacity of 280.5 mg g^-1 for Hg(ii). The limit of detection and quantification of the proposed approach were found to be 0.04 μg L^-1 and 0.15 μg L^-1, respectively. Analytical method accuracy and validity were determined by analyzing Standard Reference Materials and by the standard addition method (recovery > 95% with a 5% RSD). The findings of a Student's t-test were found to be lower than the critical Student's t value. Real water samples were successfully analyzed using the developed procedure.

Electrocatalytic Behavior of an Amide Functionalized Mn(II) Coordination Polymer on ORR, OER and HER

The new 3D coordination polymer (CP) [Mn(L)(HCOO)]n (Mn-CP) [L = 4-(pyridin-4-ylcarbamoyl)benzoate] was synthesised via a hydrothermal reaction using the pyridyl amide functionalized benzoic acid HL. It was characterized by elemental, FT-IR spectroscopy, single-crystal and powder X-ray diffraction (PXRD) analyses. Its structural features were disclosed by single-crystal X-ray diffraction analysis, which revealed a 3D structure with the monoclinic space group P21/c. Its performance as an electrocatalyst for oxygen reduction (ORR), oxygen evolution (OER), and hydrogen evolution (HER) reactions was tested in both acidic (0.5 M H2SO4) and alkaline (0.1 M KOH) media. A distinct reduction peak was observed at 0.53 V vs. RHE in 0.1 M KOH, which corresponds to the oxygen reduction, thus clearly demonstrating the material's activity for the ORR. Tafel analysis revealed a Tafel slope of 101 mV dec-1 with mixed kinetics of 2e- and 4e- pathways indicated by the Koutecky-Levich analysis. Conversely, the ORR peak was not present in 0.5 M H2SO4 indicating no activity of Mn-CP for this reaction in acidic media. In addition, Mn-CP demonstrated a noteworthy activity toward OER and HER in acidic media, in contrast to what was observed in 0.1 M KOH.

Design and Fabrication of α-MnO2-Nanorods-Modified Glassy-Carbon-Electrode-Based Serotonin Sensor

Serotonin is a very important monoamine neurotransmitter, which takes part in biological and psychological processes. In the present scenario, design and fabrication of a serotonin electrochemical sensor is of great significance. In this study, we have synthesized α-MnO₂ via a hydrothermal synthesis method using potassium permanganate as a precursor. The physiochemical properties, such as structural and phase-purity of the prepared α-MnO₂, were investigated by various characterization techniques and methods (powder X-ray diffraction, scanning electron microscopy, and energy-dispersive X-ray spectroscopy). Furthermore, the serotonin sensor was fabricated using α-MnO₂ as an electrode modifier or electro-catalyst. The bare glassy carbon electrode (GCE) was adopted as a working substrate, and its active carbon surface was modified with the synthesized α-MnO₂. This modified GCE (α-MnO₂/GCE = MGCE) was explored as a serotonin sensor. The electrochemical investigations showed that the MGCE has excellent electro-catalytic properties towards determination of serotonin. The MGCE exhibits an excellent detection limit (DL) of 0.14 µM, along with good sensitivity of 2.41 µAµM^-1 cm^-2. The MGCE also demonstrated excellent selectivity for determination of serotonin in the presence of various electro-active/interfering molecules. The MGCE also exhibits good cyclic repeatability, stability, and storage stability.

Fabrication of CeO2/GCE for Electrochemical Sensing of Hydroquinone

Hydroquinone is a widely used derivative of phenol which has a negative influence on human beings and the environment. The determination of the accurate amount of hydroquinone is of great importance. Recently, the fabrication of an electrochemical sensing device has received enormous attention. In this study, we reported on the facile synthesis of cerium dioxide (CeO₂) nanoparticles (NPs). The CeO₂ NPs were synthesized using cerium nitrate hexahydrate as a precursor. For determining the physicochemical properties of synthesized CeO₂ NPs, various advanced techniques, viz., powder X-ray diffraction (PXRD), scanning electron microscopy (SEM), energy-dispersive X-ray spectroscopy (EDX), and X-ray photoelectron spectroscopy (XPS), were studied. Further, these synthesized CeO₂ NPs were used for the modification of a glassy carbon electrode (CeO₂/GCE), which was utilized for the sensing of hydroquinone (HQ). A decent detection limit of 0.9 µM with a sensitivity of 0.41 µA/µM cm² was exhibited by the modified electrode (CeO₂/GCE). The CeO₂/GCE also exhibited good stability, selectivity, and repeatability towards the determination of HQ.

Tricuspid regurgitation worsening after transcatheter or surgical aortic valve replacement

Background

Tricuspid regurgitation (TR) often occurs concomitantly with severe aortic stenosis. Post-operative worsening of tricuspid regurgitation has been observed after surgical and transcatheter aortic valve replacement (SAVR, TAVR) [1,2].

Purpose

Pre-procedural severe tricuspid regurgitation has been shown to be a predictor of all-cause mortality in patients undergoing transcatheter aortic valve replacement (TAVR) [3,4]. However, little is known about the incidence of worsening tricuspid regurgitation after SAVR and TAVR and the impact on post-procedural outcomes. This study aims to evaluate, characterize and compare the incidence of worsening TR after TAVR and SAVR.

Methods

Retrospective single-center study of patients undergoing Transcatheter and Surgical Aortic Valve Replacement for severe aortic stenosis between 2014 and 2020. Incidence of tricuspid regurgitation was noted on echocardiogram at baseline and 1 year after TAVR or SAVR. This study enrolled 430 patients in the TAVR group and 237 patients in the SAVR group. The SAVR group only included patients who underwent isolated SAVR without any other valve intervention. Patients with severe TR at baseline were excluded from the study. Progression of TR severity was defined as deterioration by at least 1 grade of severity compared to baseline on echocardiography. Multivariable logistic regression analysis was performed to identify associations with worsening TR.

Results

Mean age of TAVR patients was higher than the SAVR patients (79±9 vs 68±12 years, p&lt;0.0001). TAVR patients also had a significantly higher EuroSCORE than the SAVR patients (8.0±7 vs 3.5±4, p&lt;0.0001). TAVR group was more likely to have atrial fibrillation than the SAVR group (34% vs 24%, p=0.006). Baseline right ventricular dysfunction and right ventricular enlargement were significantly higher in the TAVR group compared to the SAVR group [9% vs 4%, (p=0.009) and 10% vs 6%, (p=0.04), respectively]. Progression of TR severity occurred in 21.8% (94/430) of TAVR patients and 31.2% (74/237) of SAVR patients. Majority of these patients progressed from absent TR to mild TR [13.2% (57) in TAVR group vs 19.8% (47) in SAVR group (p=0.02)]. 6.3% (27) of patients in the TAVR group and 8.8% (21) of patients in the SAVR group had mild to moderate worsening of TR (p=0.22). 1.63% (7) in the TAVR group and 2.1% (5) in the SAVR group had progression from moderate to severe TR (p=0.65). On multivariable analysis, SAVR (Odds ratio, 2.46 [CI, 1.6–3.7]) and age (Odds ratio, 1.03 [CI, 1.03–1.05]) were associated with worsening TR severity.

Conclusions

In this retrospective observational study, SAVR and age were found to be associated with worsening tricuspid regurgitation. Majority of these patients progressed from absent TR to mild TR after SAVR. Further studies are necessary to determine long term outcomes of worsening tricuspid regurgitation after TAVR and SAVR.

Numerical Simulation of NH3(CH2)2NH3MnCl4 Based Pb-Free Perovskite Solar Cells Via SCAPS-1D

Recently, the design and fabrication of lead (Pb)-free perovskite or perovskite-like materials have received great interest for the development of perovskite solar cells (PSCs). Manganese (Mn) is a less toxic element, which may be an alternative to Pb. In this work, we explored the role of NH₃(CH₂)₂NH₃MnCl₄ perovskite as a light absorber layer via SCAPS-1D. A Pb-free PSC device (FTO/TiO₂/NH₃(CH₂)₂NH₃MnCl₄/spiro-OMeTAD/Au) was simulated via SCAPS-1D software. The simulated Pb-free PSCs (FTO/TiO₂/NH₃(CH₂)₂NH₃MnCl₄/spiro-OMeTAD/Au) showed decent power conversion efficiency (PCE) of 20.19%. Further, the impact of the thickness of absorber (NH₃(CH₂)₂NH₃MnCl₄), electron transport (TiO₂), and hole-transport (spiro-OMeTAD) layers were also investigated. Subsequently, various electron transport layers (ETLs) were also introduced to investigate the role of ETL. In further studies, an NH₃(CH₂)₂NH₃MnCl₄-based PSC device (FTO/TiO₂/NH₃(CH₂)₂NH₃MnCl₄/spiro-OMeTAD/Au) was also developed (humidity = ~30-40%). The fabricated PSCs displayed an open circuit voltage (Voc) of 510 mV with a PCE of 0.12%.

Systematic study of physicochemical and electrochemical properties of carbon nanomaterials

Carbon nanomaterials exhibit exceptional properties and broad horizon applications, where graphene is one of the most popular allotropes of this family due to its astounding performance in every stratum vis-à-vis other classical materials. The large surface area of 2630 m² g⁻¹, high electrical conductivity, and electron mobility of non-toxic graphene nanomaterials serve as the building blocks for supercapacitor studies. In this article, comparative studies are carried out between electrochemically exfoliated graphene sheets (GSs), solvothermally synthesized graphene quantum dots (GQDs) and acid refluxed carbon nanotubes (CNTs) as an energy storage electrode nanomaterial through cyclic voltammetry (CV). The electrochemical properties of the materials are well correlated with the physicochemical characteristics obtained from Raman, Fourier-transform infrared, and absorption spectroscopy. Thin GSs (0.8–1 nm) and small size (6–10 nm) GQDs fabricated by using laboratory-grade 99% purity graphite rods resulted in promising low-cost materials at mass scale as compared to conducting CNTs. The 0D graphene quantum dots proved to be an excellent energy electrode material in an alkaline electrolyte solution compared to other carbon nanomaterials. The distinct characteristic features of GQDs, like superior electrical properties, large surface area, and abundant active sites make them an ideal candidate for utilization in supercapacitors. The GQDs exhibited an enhanced specific capacitance of 113 F g⁻¹ in 6 mol L⁻¹ KOH through cyclic voltammetry.

Selective Extraction of Trace Arsenite Ions Using a Highly Porous Aluminum Oxide Membrane with Ordered Nanopores

Metal ion extraction and determination at trace level concentration are challenging due to sample complexity or spectral interferences. Herein, we prepared a through-hole aluminum oxide membrane (AOM) by electrochemical anodization of aluminum substrates. The prepared AOM was characterized by scanning electron microscopy, surface area analysis, porosity measurements, and X-ray photoelectron spectroscopy. The AOM with ordered nanopores was highly porous and possess inherent binding sites for selective arsenite sorption. The AOM was used as a novel sorbent for solid-phase microextraction and preconcentration of arsenite ions in water samples. The AOM's sub-micrometer thickness allows water molecules to flow freely across the pores. Before instrumental determination, the suggested microextraction approach removes spectral interferents and improves the analyte ion concentration, with a detection limit of 0.02 μg L^-1. Analyzing a standard reference material was used to validate the procedure. Student's t-test value was less than critical Student's t-value of 4.303 at a 95% confidence level. With coefficients of variation of 3.25%, good precision was achieved.

Preconcentration and determination of trace Hg(ii) using ultrasound-assisted dispersive solid phase microextraction

Defect rich molybdenum disulfide (MoS₂) nanosheets were hydrothermally synthesized and their potential for ultrasound assisted dispersive solid phase microextraction of trace Hg(ii) ions was assessed. Ultrasonic dispersion allows the MoS₂ nanosheets to chelate rapidly and evenly with Hg(ii) ions and results in improving the precision and minimizing the extraction time. The multiple defect rich surface was characterized by X-ray diffraction and high-resolution transmission electron microscopy. The surface charge of intrinsically sulfur rich MoS₂ nanosheets and their elemental composition was characterized by zeta potential measurements, energy dispersive spectroscopy, and X-ray photoelectron spectroscopy. The cracks and holes on the basal planes of MoS₂ led to diffusion of the Hg(ii) ions into the interior channels. Inner-sphere chelation along with outer-sphere electrostatic interaction were the proposed mechanism for the Hg(ii) adsorption onto the MoS₂ surface. The experimental data showed good selectivity of MoS₂ nanosheets towards Hg(ii) adsorption. The systematic and constant errors of the proposed method were ruled out by the analysis of the Standard Reference Material (>95% recovery with <5% RSD). The Student's t-test values for the analyzed Standard Reference Material were found to be less than the critical Student's t value at 95% confidence level. The limit of detection (3S) was found to be 0.01 ng mL⁻¹. The MoS₂ nanosheets were successfully employed for the analysis of Hg(ii) in environmental water samples.

Habitat selection by Asiatic black bear (Ursus thibetanus) in Siran and Kaghan Valleys, Pakistan

Asiatic black bear is present in variety of habitats like broad-leaves and coniferous forests, extending form sea level to 4300m elevation and change their habitat for food purpose seasonally. The present study was conducted at Kaghan and Siran Valleys, District Mansehra, Khyber Pakhtunkhwa, Pakistan to assess habitat of black bear. Line transect method was used for observation of bear signs. Twelve meter circular radius plots were selected for the concern vegetation's i.e. (trees, shrubs and herbs) and three to six plots were placed in each transect. At the result of sign survey, thirteen different categories of bear signs were recorded and encounter rate was calculated for each sign. A total of 1858 signs were observed during field surveys. Total (81%) coniferous species were recoded among trees, with the highest appearance of Pinus wallichiana (34.22%) and Spruce spp (27.76%), similarly broad leaves trees (18.56%) were also recoded from habitat plots. Most of the signs were encountered in bushy areas, whereas high number of Viburnum Spp (60.29%) was present. It is indicated that black bear prefers blend of Coniferous Trees, Viburnum and Ferns Species; probably because these plants provide enough food, protection, and meticulous shelter because more than 80% of habitat composed of these three species. Currently habitat destruction and increase in human population are the up-growing issues for wild animals (especially Asiatic black bear), which is highly sensitive to such problems. High levels of conservation efforts are recommended for the protection of black bear habitat and to avoid human interference in their territory.

Population distribution and habitat analysis of Rufous treepie (Dendrocitta vagabunda) in Abbottabad, Pakistan

The Rufous treepie (Dendrocitta vagabunda) belongs to family corvidae, order Passeriformes which includes about 100 species. The current study was conducted to gather information about the Population distribution and habitat analysis of D. vagabunda at District Abbottabad, Pakistan. The data were collected on monthly basis both morning and evening times (2018-2019). "The ''Point count Method" was used for population estimation and ''Quadrates Method" for habitat analysis of study area. The result shows an average month-wise population density of D. vagabunda was maximum at Jhangra 0.14±0.039/ha, whereas minimum at Havelian 0.11±0.022/ha. There was no significant difference (p>0.05) among monthly population densities of D. vagabunda, however, a significant difference (p<0.05) was found between morning and evening times population of the specie. The present study revealed that importance value index (IVI) of plants species at Sherwan, Bakot, Havelian, Langra and Jhangra were 59.6±12.6, 50.1±6.9, 53.4±6.3, 66.8±10 and 60.1±7.7. Likewise, the frequency of shrubs at Sherwan, Bakot, Havelian, Langra and Jhangra were 33.3±4.2, 45±9.4, 46.7±8.2, 55.6±22.2 and 37.5±8.5. Similarly, the frequency of herbs at Sherwan, Bakot, Havelian, Langra and Jhangra were 40.4±6.0, 37.5±5.6, 53.3±7.4, 48.5±5.2 and 46.9±7.4 respectively. Our results show the study area as suitable habitat for D. vagabunda.

Elucidation of molecular interactions of theaflavin monogallate with camel milk lactoferrin: detailed spectroscopic and dynamic simulation studies

Lactoferrin is a heme-binding multifunctional glycoprotein known for iron transportation in the blood and also contributes to innate immunity. In this study, the interaction of theaflavin monogallate, a polyphenolic component of black tea, with camel milk lactoferrin was studied using various biophysical and computational techniques. Fluorescence quenching at different temperatures suggests that theaflavin monogallate interacted with lactoferrin by forming a non-fluorescent complex, i.e., static quenching. Theaflavin monogallate shows a significant affinity towards lactoferrin with a binding constant of ∼10⁴–10⁵ M⁻¹ at different temperatures. ANS binding shows that the binding of polyphenol resulted in the burial of hydrophobic domains of lactoferrin. Moreover, thermodynamic parameters (ΔH, ΔS and ΔG) suggested that the interaction between protein and polyphenol was entropically favored and spontaneous. Circular dichroism confirmed there was no alteration in the secondary structure of lactoferrin. The energy transfer efficiency (FRET) from lactoferrin to theaflavin was found to be approximately 50%, with a distance between protein and polyphenol of 2.44 nm. Molecular docking shows that the binding energy of lactoferrin–theaflavin monogallate interaction was −9.7 kcal mol⁻¹. Theaflavin monogallate was bound at the central cavity of lactoferrin and formed hydrogen bonds with Gln89, Tyr192, Lys301, Ser303, Gln87, and Val250 of lactoferrin. Other residues, such as Tyr82, Tyr92, and Tyr192, were involved in hydrophobic interactions. The calculation of various molecular dynamics simulations parameters indicated the formation of a stable complex between protein and polyphenol. This study delineates the binding mechanism of polyphenol with milk protein and could be helpful in milk formulations and play a key role in the food industry.

Coumarin Exhibits Broad-Spectrum Antibiofilm and Antiquorum Sensing Activity against Gram-Negative Bacteria: In Vitro and In Silico Investigation

Quorum sensing (QS) and biofilm inhibition are recognized as the novel drug targets for the broad-spectrum anti-infective strategy to combat the infections caused by drug-resistant bacterial pathogens. Many compounds from medicinal plants have been found to demonstrate anti-infective activity. However, broad-spectrum anti-QS and antibiofilm efficacy and their mode of action are poorly studied. In this study, the efficacy of coumarin was tested against QS-regulated virulent traits of Gram-negative bacteria. Coumarin inhibited the production of violacein pigment in Chromobacterium violaceum 12472 by 64.21%. Similarly, there was 87.25, 70.05, 76.07, 58.64, 48.94, and 81.20% inhibition of pyocyanin, pyoverdin, and proteolytic activity, lasB elastase activity, swimming motility, and rhamnolipid production, respectively, in Pseudomonas aeruginosa PAO1. All tested virulence factors of Serratia marcescens MTCC 97 were also suppressed by more than 50% at the highest sub-minimum inhibitory concentration. Moreover, the biofilms of bacterial pathogens were also inhibited in a dose-dependent manner. Molecular docking and molecular dynamics (MD) simulation gave insights into the possible mode of action. The binding energy obtained by docking studies ranged from -5.7 to -8.1 kcal mol^-1. Coumarin was found to be docked in the active site of acylhomoserine lactone (AHL) synthases and regulatory proteins of QS. MD simulations further supported the in vitro studies where coumarin formed a stable complex with the tested proteins. The secondary structure of all proteins showed a negligible change in the presence of coumarin. Computational studies showed that the possible mechanisms of anti-QS activity were the inhibition of AHL synthesis, antagonization of QS-regulatory proteins, and blocking of the receptor proteins. The findings of this study clearly highlight the potency of coumarin against the virulence factors of Gram-negative bacterial pathogens that may be developed as an effective inhibitor of QS and biofilms.

Graphene oxide lamellar membrane with enlarged inter-layer spacing for fast preconcentration and determination of trace metal ions

We report a graphene oxide (GO) lamellar membrane with increased inter-layer spacing for efficient permeation of water molecules and heavy metal ions through nanoporous graphene oxide. The inter-layer spacing of the GO sheets in the lamellar structure was increased by introducing poly-aminophosphonic acid (APA) in between the GO sheets. We demonstrate experimentally, the use of a prepared membrane (GO–APA) by a SPE technique for the preconcentration and extraction of heavy metal ions by chelate formation and their determination by ICP-OES. We found that this sub-micrometer-thick membrane allows unimpeded permeation of water molecules through two-dimensional capillaries formed across the pores and by closely spaced graphene sheets. Compared to the bulk GO sorbent, GO–APA membrane offers enhanced sensitivity and permeability for heavy metal ions due to relatively large inter-layer spacing and high surface area (extraction phase) with a high number of active functional groups. The potential of this technique for the preconcentration and extraction of Pb(ii), Cd(ii) and Cu(ii) is illustrated with the contaminated ground water and industrial waste water analysis. The detection limit achieved for studied ions was 1.1 ng L⁻¹, under optimized experimental conditions. The co-existing ions did not hinders the extraction of trace heavy metal ions. Accuracy of the developed method was assessed by analyzing Standard Reference Materials. The Student's t test values were found to less than the critical Student's t value of 4.303 at the 95% confidence level. The method shows good precision as coefficients of variation for five replicate measurements were found to be 4–5%.

A porous graphene oxide membrane with increased interlayer spacing of GO sheets was prepared by covalently introducing poly-aminophosphonic acid in between the GO sheets. The membrane was successfully employed for the extraction of heavy metal ions.

Bioactive Tryptophan-Based Copper Complex with Auxiliary β-Carboline Spectacle Potential on Human Breast Cancer Cells: In Vitro and In Vivo Studies

Biocompatible tryptophan-derived copper (1) and zinc (2) complexes with norharmane (β-carboline) were designed, synthesized, characterized, and evaluated for the potential anticancer activity in vitro and in vivo. The in vitro cytotoxicity of both complexes 1 and 2 were assessed against two cancerous cells: (human breast cancer) MCF7 and (liver hepatocellular cancer) HepG2 cells with a non-tumorigenic: (human embryonic kidney) HEK293 cells. The results exhibited a potentially decent selectivity of 1 against MCF7 cells with an IC50 value of 7.8 ± 0.4 μM compared to 2 (less active, IC50 ~ 20 μM). Furthermore, we analyzed the level of glutathione, lipid peroxidation, and visualized ROS generation to get an insight into the mechanistic pathway and witnessed oxidative stress. These in vitro results were ascertained by in vivo experiments, which also supported the free radical-mediated oxidative stress. The comet assay confirmed the oxidative stress that leads to DNA damage. The histopathology of the liver also ascertained the low toxicity of 1.

"Turn-on" benzophenone based fluorescence and colorimetric sensor for the selective detection of Fe2+ in aqueous media: Validation of sensing mechanism by spectroscopic and computational studies

A diaminobenzophenone Schiff base derived probe 1, was synthesized and structure elucidation was carried out by spectroscopic studies viz., FT-IR, UV-vis, ¹H, and ¹³C NMR and mass spectrometry. The sensing phenomenon with different metal ions (Cr³⁺, Mn²⁺, Fe²⁺, Fe³⁺, Co²⁺, Ni²⁺, Cu²⁺, Zn²⁺, Cd²⁺) was investigated by employing absorption and fluorescence titrations, which demonstrated that probe 1 exhibited selective fluorescent sensing behavior towards Fe²⁺ ion among various other metal ions. The porobes selceteclivity towards Fe²⁺ was also examined by colorimetric assay which revealed a change in the color from light yellow to brown upon addition of Fe²⁺ ion. A remarkable increase in the fluorescence intensity of probe 1 was observed towards Fe²⁺ ion, which was found to be associated with the inhibition of photoinduced electron-transfer (PET) and CN isomerization processes, respectively. The chemosensor exhibited an association constant value of 6.173 × 10⁷ M^-2 as determined by using non-linear least square fit data. Job's plot calculated the binding stoichiometry, and the sensing phenomenon of Fe²⁺ towards the probe was further supported by Density Functional Theory (DFT) calculations and ¹H NMR studies. The detection limit of probe 1 was found to be 0.0363 µM, which is below the permissible limits according to the WHO guideline (5 μM) for Fe²⁺ ions in the drinking water. Furthermore, the practical application of probe 1 was studied by analyzing the content of Fe²⁺ in different water samples.

A novel biocompatible formate bridged 1D-Cu(ii) coordination polymer induces apoptosis selectively in human lung adenocarcinoma (A549) cells

Copper compounds are promising candidates for next-generation metal anticancer drugs. Therefore, we synthesized and characterized a formate bridged 1D coordination polymer [Cu(L)(HCOO)₂]_n, (L = 2-methoxy-6-methyl-3-((quinolin-8-ylimino)methyl)chroman-4-ol), PCU1, wherein the Cu(ii) center adopts a square pyramidal coordination environment with adjacent CuCu distances of 5.28 Å. Primarily, in vitro DNA interaction studies revealed a metallopolymer which possesses high DNA binding propensity and cleaves DNA via the oxidative pathway. We further analysed its potential on cancerous cells MCF-7, HeLa, A549, and two non-tumorigenic cells HEK293 and HBE. The selective cytotoxicity potential of PCU1 against A549 cells driven us to examine the mechanistic pathways comprehensively by carrying out various assays viz, cell cycle arrest, Annexin V-FTIC/PI assay, autophagy, intercellular localization, mitochondrial membrane potential 'MMP', antiproliferative assay, and gene expression of TGF-β and MMP-2.

A Highly Efficient Ag Nanoparticle-Immobilized Alginate-g-Polyacrylonitrile Hybrid Photocatalyst for the Degradation of Nitrophenols

Herein, we report PAN-g-Alg@Ag-based nanocatalysts synthesis via in situ oxidative free-radical polymerization of acrylonitrile (AN) using Alg@Ag nanoparticles (Alg@Ag NPs). Various analytical techniques, including FTIR, XRD, SEM, TEM, UV-Vis, and DSC, were employed to determine bonding interactions and chemical characteristics of the nanocatalyst. The optimized response surface methodology coupled central composite design (RSM-CCD) reaction conditions were a 35-min irradiation time in a 70-mg L-1 2,4-dinitrophenol (DNP) solution at pH of 4.68. Here, DNP degradation was 99.46% at a desirability of 1.00. The pseudo-first-order rate constant (K1) values were 0.047, 0.050, 0.054, 0.056, 0.059, and 0.064 min-1 with associated half-life (t1/2) values of 14.74, 13.86, 12.84, 12.38, 11.74, 10.82, and 10.04 min that corresponded to DNP concentrations of 10, 20, 30, 40, 50, 60, and 70 mg L-1, respectively, in the presence of PAN-g-Alg@Ag (0.03 g). The results indicate that the reaction followed the pseudo-first-order kinetic model with an R2 value of 0.99. The combined absorption properties of PAN and Alg@Ag NPs on copolymerization on the surface contributed more charge density to surface plasmon resonance (SPR) in a way to degrade more and more molecules of DNP together with preventing the recombination of electron and hole pairs within the photocatalytic process.

Glyburide inhibits non-enzymatic glycation of HSA: An approach for the management of AGEs associated diabetic complications

Advanced glycation endproducts (AGEs) are the final product of glycation, highly reactive in nature and contribute directly or indirectly to numerous complications related to diabetes. In this study, the antiglycation activity of glyburide was investigated using HSA as model protein, both against glucose and methylglyoxal mediated glycation. The possible mechanism of action was also deciphered using biophysical and computational tools. Approximately 70% inhibition of both early and advanced glycation end products were recorded in the presence of glyburide. Free lysine modification was reduced by glyburide treatment and improvement in biochemical markers such as free thiol groups and carbonyl content was observed. Interaction studies revealed that glyburide showed moderate to strong binding affinity towards HSA with binding constant in the order of 10⁶ M^-1. The interaction of glyburide with HSA was entropically favourable and spontaneous in nature. Molecular dynamics simulation deciphered that glyburide-HSA complex was quite stable where RMSD, RMSF, R_g, SASA, and secondary structure of HSA remained approximately same over the entire simulation period. The average binding energy of the MD simulation for glyburide-HSA complex was found to be -15.386 kJ mol^-1. The findings demonstrate the antiglycation potential of glyburide and its possible mechanism of action.

Ecofriendly Green Synthesis of the ZnO-Doped CuO@Alg Bionanocomposite for Efficient Oxidative Degradation of p-Nitrophenol

In the present study, ecofriendly green synthesized ZnO/CuO nanorods were prepared by using the stabilizing and reducing characteristics of the alginate biopolymer. The bionanocomposite (BNC) material was characterized by various sophisticated analytical tools such as Fourier transform infrared spectroscopy, X-ray diffraction, scanning electron microscopy-energy dispersive X-ray spectroscopy, transmission electron microscopy, UV-visible spectroscopy, differential scanning calorimetry, and the Brunauer-Emmett-Teller (BET) method. The composition of ZnO/CuO@Alg BNC was found to be C (16.16 ± 0.42%), O (42.26 ± 1.87%), Cu (31.96 ± 1.05%), and Zn (9.62 ± 0.48%), which also supports the approximate 3:1 ratio of Cu2+ and Zn2+ taken as the precursor. The nanocrystalline spinel ferrite was found to have a BET specific surface area of 19.24 m2 g-1 with a total pore volume of 0.075 cm3 g-1 and 1.45 eV as the band gap energy (E g). Further, the material was applied for the photodegradation of p-nitrophenol (PNP) under the advanced oxidative process (AOP) under visible sunlight irradiation. The visible light radiation was used for the degradation of PNP under pH 2 conditions and resulted in 98.38% of the photocatalytic efficiency of the ZnO/CuO@Alg catalyst within 137 min of irradiation time. The photocatalytic reaction was best defined by the pseudo-first-order kinetics which involves the adsorption of the PNP molecule on the surface of the catalyst, thereby demineralizing it in the presence of advanced active •OH radicals. The values of rate constant for the pseudo-first-order model (k 1) were calculated as 0.013, 0.016, 0.019, 0.021, and 0.023 min-1 with half-life periods of 53.31, 43.31, 36.47, 33.00, and 30.13 min for 10-50 mg L-1 PNP concentrations. The presence of t-butyl alcohol decreases the photocatalytic efficiency, which suggests that the degradation of PNP was accomplished by the •OH oxidative radical.

L-Ascorbic Acid-g-Polyaniline Mesoporous Silica Nanocomposite for Efficient Removal of Crystal Violet: A Batch and Fixed Bed Breakthrough Studies

In the present study, mesoporous silica nanoparticles (MSNs) synthesized through sol-gel process and calcined at 600 °C were further surface functionalized by a copolymer chain of L-ascorbic acid (AS) and polyaniline (PAni) by in situ free radical oxidative polymerization reaction. The surface modification of MSNs by AS-g-PAni was confirmed by using various analytical techniques, namely FTIR, XRD, SEM-EDX, TEM and AFM. The composition of AS-g-PAni@MS was found to be composed of C (52.53%), N (20.30%), O (25.69%) and Si (1.49%), with 26.42 nm as the particle size. Further, it was applied for the adsorption of crystal violet (CV) dye under batch, as well as fixed bed method. RSM-BBD was taken into consideration, to optimize the various operational parameters effecting the adsorption through batch method. To explore maximum efficiency of the material, it was further subjected to adsorption of CV under fixed bed method, using the variable bed heights of 3.7, 5.4 and 8.1 cm. Based on high value of regression coefficient (R2) and low value of RMSE given as (0.99, 0.02) for 3.7 cm, (0.99, 0.03), the breakthrough data were very well defined by the Thomas model, with optimum concurrence of stoichiometric adsorption capacity values. The external mass transfer equilibrium data were well fitted by the Langmuir model, with maximum monolayer adsorption capacity of 88.42 mg g-1 at 303K, 92.51 mg g-1 at 313 K, 107.41 mg g-1 at 313 K and 113.25 mg g-1 at 333 K. The uptake of CV by AS-g-PAni@MS was well defined by pseudo second order model with rate constant K2 = 0.003 L mg-1 min-1 for 50 and 0.003 L mg-1 min-1 for 60 mg L-1 CV. The adsorption reaction was endothermic with enthalpy (ΔH) value of 3.62 KJ mol-1 and highly efficient for treatment of CV-contaminated water for more the five consecutive cycles.

Effective Enrichment and Quantitative Determination of Trace Hg2+ Ions Using CdS-Decorated Cellulose Nanofibrils

Water pollution caused by metal contamination is of serious concern. Direct determination of trace metal ions in real water samples remains challenging. A sample preparation technique is a prerequisite before analysis. Herein, we report the facile water-based hydrothermal synthesis of cadmium sulfide nanoparticles on a cellulose nanofiber surface to prepare a new adsorbent material. Field emission scanning electron microscopy, high-resolution tunneling electron microscopy, elemental mapping and X-ray photoelectron microscopy were used to characterize the surface morphology, structural determination, elemental composition and nature of bonding. The nanoadsorbent (cadmium-sulfide-decorated cellulose nanofibrils (CNFs@CdS)) was employed for the solid-phase extraction and determination of trace Hg(II) from aqueous media. The experimental conditions were optimized systematically and the data show a good Hg(II) adsorption capacity of 126.0 mg g⁻¹. The CNFs@CdS adsorbent shows the selective removal of Hg(II) accordingly to the hard and soft acid–base theory of metal–ligand interaction. A high preconcentration limit of 0.36 µg L⁻¹ was obtained with a preconcentration factor of 580. The lowest level of trace Hg(II) concentration, which was quantitatively analyzed by the proposed method, was found to be 0.06 µg L⁻¹. No significant interferences from the sample matrix were observed in the extraction of Hg(II). Analysis of the standard reference material (SRM 1641d) was carried out to validate the proposed methodology. Good agreement between the certified and observed values indicates the applicability of the developed methodology for the analysis of Hg(II) in tap water, river water and industrial wastewater samples.

Aminophosphonic Acid Functionalized Cellulose Nanofibers for Efficient Extraction of Trace Metal Ions

Cellulose nanofibers were covalently functionalized using diethylenetriamine penta (methylene phosphonic acid) and studied for the extraction of heavy metal ions. The surface-functionalized nanofibers showed a high adsorption capacity towards heavy metal ions as compared to bare nanofibers. The elemental composition and surface morphology of the prepared bio-adsorbent was characterized by X-ray photoelectron spectroscopy, attenuated total reflectance infrared spectroscopy, field emission scanning electron microscopy, and energy dispersive spectroscopy. The prepared material was studied to develop a column-based solid phase extraction method for the preconcentration of trace metal ions and their determination by inductively coupled plasma optical emission spectroscopy. The batch experimental data was well fitted to Langmuir adsorption isotherms (R2 > 0.99) and follows pseudo-second-order kinetics. The experimental variables such as sample pH, equilibrium time, column breakthrough, sorption flow rate, the effect of coexisting ions, and eluent type were systematically studied and optimized accordingly. The detection limit of the proposed method was found to be 0.03, 0.05, and 0.04 µg L-1 for Cu(II), Pb(II), and Cd(II), respectively. Certified Reference Materials were analyzed to validate the proposed method against systematic and constant errors. At a 95% confidence level, the Student's t-test values were less than the critical Student's t value (4.302). The developed method was successfully employed for the preconcentration and determination of trace metal ions from real water samples such as river water and industrial effluent.

Computational Proteome-Wide Study for the Prediction of Escherichia coli Protein Targeting in Host Cell Organelles and Their Implication in Development of Colon Cancer

Enterohemorrhagic Escherichia coli infection is associated with gastrointestinal disorders, including diarrhea and colorectal cancer. Although evidences have established the involvement of E. coli in the growth of colon cancer, the molecular mechanisms of carcinogenesis of cancer growth and development are not well understood. We analyzed E. coli protein targeting in host cell organelles and the implication in colon cancer using in silico approaches. Our results indicated that many E. coli proteins targeted the endoplasmic reticulum (ER), ER membranes, Golgi apparatus, Golgi apparatus membranes, peroxisomes, nucleus, nuclear membrane, mitochondria, and mitochondrial membrane of host cells. These targeted proteins in ER, Golgi apparatus, peroxisomes, nucleus, and mitochondria may alter the normal functioning of various pathways including DNA repair, apoptosis, replication, transcription, and protein folding in E. coli-infected host cells. The results of the current in silico study provide insights into E. coli pathogenesis and may aid in designing new preventive and therapeutic strategies.

Understanding the interaction between α-1-acid glycoprotein (AGP) and potential Cu/Zn metallo-drugs of benzimidazole derived organic motifs: A multi-spectroscopic and molecular docking study

Drug-binding and interactions with plasma proteins strongly affect their efficiency of delivery, hence considered as a key factor in determining the overall pharmacological action. Alpha-1-acid glycoprotein (AGP), a second most abundant plasma protein in blood circulation, has unique drug binding ability and involved in the transportation of various compounds. Here, we have investigated the mechanism of interaction between AGP and potential Cu/Zn metallo-drugs of benzimidazole derived organic motifs (CuL₂ and ZnL₂, where L is Schiff base ligand) by applying integrated spectroscopic, biophysical techniques and computational molecular docking analyses. We found that both the metallo-drugs (CuL₂ and ZnL₂) were bound at the central cavity of AGP interacting with the residues of lobe I, lobe II as well as lobe III. The binding of metallo-drugs to AGP occurs in 1:1 M ratios. Hydrogen bonding, electrostatic and hydrophobic interactions played a significant role in stabilizing the AGP-metallo-drug complexes. Binding affinities of both the metallo-drugs towards AGP at 298 K were of the order of 10⁴-10⁵ M^-1, corresponding to Gibbs free energy of stabilization of approximately -5.50 to -6.62 kcal mol^-1. Furthermore, the spectroscopic investigation by circular dichroism and synchronous fluorescence analyses suggest conformational changes in AGP upon the binding of metallic compounds.

Comparative refolding of guanidinium hydrochloride denatured bovine serum albumin assisted by cationic and anionic surfactants via artificial chaperone protocol: Biophysical insight

In the present study, we report the cooperative refolding/renaturation behaviour of guanidinium hydrochloride (GdnHCl) denatured bovine serum albumin (BSA) in the presence of cationic surfactant cetyltrimethylammonium bromide (CTAB), anionic surfactant sodium dodecyl sulphate (SDS) and their catanionic mixture in the solution of 60 mM sodium phosphate buffer of physiological pH 7.4, using artificial chaperone-assisted two-step method. Here, we have employed biophysical techniques to characterize the refolding mechanism of denatured BSA after 200 times of dilution in the presence of cationic, anionic surfactants and their catanionic mixture, separately. We have found that minimum refolding of diluted BSA in the presence of 1:1 rational mixture of CTAB and SDS (CTAB/SDS = 50/50), it may be due to the micelles formation which is responsible for the unordered microstructure aggregate formation. Other mixtures (CTAB/SDS = 20/80 and 80/20) slightly played an effective role during refolding process in the presence of methyl-β-cyclodextrin. On other hand, CTAB and SDS are more effective and reflect a good renaturation tendency of denatured BSA solution separately and in existence of methyl-β-cyclodextrin as compare to their mixture compositions. But overall, CTAB has the better renaturation tendency as compare to SDS in the existence of methyl-β-cyclodextrin. These results ascribed the presence of charge head group and length of hydrophobic tail of CTAB surfactant that plays an important task during electrostatic and hydrophobic interactions at pH 7.4 at which BSA carries negative charge on their surface. These biophysical parameters suggest that, CTAB surfactant assisted artificial chaperone protocol may be utilized in the protein renaturation/refolding studies, which may address the associated problems of biotechnological industries for the development of efficient and inexpensive folding aides, which may also be used to produced genetically engineered cells related diseases, resulting from protein misfolding/aggregation.

Synthesis, characterization and photo-catalytic activity of guar-gum-g-aliginate@silver bionanocomposite material

The green mechanism for the synthesis of nanoparticles and their application to the wastewater treatment is of inordinate curiosity to the research community. Herein we outline a novel method for the synthesis of silver nanoparticles via a green route using alginate-guar gum blend (GG-Alg@Ag) and their application to degrade methylene blue (MB) dye. The synthesized material was characterized by FTIR, XRD, SEM-EDX, TEM, TGA-DTG, AFM, and UV-vis techniques. A combination of RSM and CCD was employed to compute the system and optimized values of various interacting parameters such as exposure time (120 min), pH (4.98), dye concentration (194 mg L⁻¹), and catalyst dose (0.07 g) with a photodegradation capacity of 92.33% and desirability 1.0. The mechanism of degradation reaction was best elucidated by the pseudo-second-order model suggesting chemical deposition of MB on the GG-Alg@Ag surface through followed by the reduction mechanism in the occupancy of visible light. The optical studies indicated a value of 2.5 eV by Tauc's plot for bandgap energy (E_g) for GG-Alg@Ag bionanocomposite.

A series of phenanthroimidazole (PI) derivatives (M1–M3): 2-phenyl-1H-phenanthro [9,10-d]imidazole (M1), 2-anthryl-1H-phenanthro[9,10-d]imidazole (M2), and 2-pyrenyl-1H-phenanthro[9,10-d]imidazole (M3) were synthesized and characterized using various spectroscopic techniques.

In Situ Copolymerized Polyacrylamide Cellulose Supported Fe3O4 Magnetic Nanocomposites for Adsorptive Removal of Pb(II): Artificial Neural Network Modeling and Experimental Studies

The inimical effects associated with heavy metals are serious concerns, particularly with respect to global health-related issues, because of their non-ecological characteristics and high toxicity. Current research in this area is focused on the synthesis of poly(acrylamide) grafted Cell@Fe3O4 nanocomposites via oxidative free radical copolymerization of the acrylamide monomer and its application for the removal of Pb(II). The hybrid material was analyzed using different analytical techniques, including thermogravimetric analysis (TGA), Fourier transform-infrared spectroscopy (FTIR), X-ray diffraction (XRD), scanning electron microscopy (SEM), transmission electron microscopy (TEM), and Brunauer-Emmett-Teller (BET) analysis. The efficacious impact of variable parameters, including contact time, pH, material dose, initial Pb(II) concentration, and the temperature, was investigated and optimized using both batch and artificial neural networks (ANN). Surface digestion of metal ions is exceedingly pH-dependent, and higher adsorption efficiencies and adsorption capacities of Pb(II) were acquired at a pH value of 5. The acquired equilibrium data were analyzed using different isotherm models, including Langmuir, Freundlich, Temkin, and Redlich-Peterson models. In this investigation, the best performance was obtained using the Langmuir model. The maximum adsorption capacity of the material investigated via monolayer formation was determined to be 314.47 mg g-1 at 323 K, 239.74 mg g-1 at 313 K, and 100.79 mg g-1 at 303 K.

Green synthesis and structural classification of Acacia nilotica mediated-silver doped titanium oxide (Ag/TiO2) spherical nanoparticles: Assessment of its antimicrobial and anticancer activity

Current exanimation reports, green fabrication of silver doped TiO2 nanoparticles (Ag/TiO2) using aqueous extract of Acacia nilotica as bio-reductant and assess its potential as antimicrobial and anticancer agent. The obtained spherical Ag/TiO2 were characterized by various analytical techniques including FTIR, (XRD), (FE-SEM EDS), and (TEM). Synthesized Ag/TiO2 demonstrated broad spectrum antibacterial and anticandidal activity. The order of antimicrobial activity was found to be E. coli > C. albicans > MRSA > P. aeruginosa. In addition, cytotoxicity and oxidative stress of Ag/TiO2 nanoparticles in (MCF-7) cells was also investigated. Outcomes of MTT assay showed concentration dependent reduction in cell viability. Further, synthesized NPs reduced the level of glutathione, induced ROS generation and lipid peroxidation in the treated cells. Therefore, it is envisaged that these spherical nanoparticles may be exploited in drug delivery, pharmaceutical, and food industry.
