Abstract
Background In March 2020, social isolation measures were imposed in Brazil to contain the spread of the novel coronavirus (SARS-CoV-2), requiring health services to implement contingency plans. The main objective of the study was to verify the status of the disease, self-reported by patients who discontinued phototherapy, during a period of social isolation. Methods All patients receiving phototherapy at the Santa Casa de Porto Alegre, Brazil, prior to the implementation of social distancing measures were eligible for inclusion in the study. 86 patients answered a questionnaire during a medical evaluation. Results 95% of patients who stopped phototherapy reported a worsening of disease status. Only 19% of patients continued to attend phototherapy sessions during the social isolation period. Conclusion The COVID-19 pandemic led most patients to stop phototherapy, resulting in the perception of increased disease severity in an outpatient sample in southern Brazil.

Abstract
We report a case of phaeohyphomycosis that affected the leg of a 45-year-old Brazilian man, car mechanic and renal transplanted. The direct mycological examination evidenced dematiaceous septated hyphae. The pathogenic fungal species was identified as Exophiala xenobiotica. Antifungal activity in vitro revealed terbinafine as the best antifungal. For treatment, it was chosen surgical excision of the entire lesion and used systemic itraconazole. Phaeohyphomycosis caused by Exophiala xenobiotica is extremely rare and is closely related to transplant patients.

Abstract
BACKGROUND Prevalence of acne varies worldwide. Several factors (age, skin color, body fat, diet, and smoking) have been investigated as risk factors. OBJECTIVE A total of 2,201 18-year-old males living in Pelotas, South Brazil, were evaluated in order to examine the prevalence of acne and associated factors. METHODS A cross-sectional population-based study was conducted. A dermatologist performed the clinical examination of the face and trunk for identification of acne lesions. Acne was evaluated as clinically noninflammatory, inflammatory, and acne with both types of lesions. Skin color, schooling, height, smoking, skinfolds, waist circumference, BMI, and dietary dairy intake were the independent variables used. RESULTS A response rate of 97.2% was obtained. Individuals without any acne lesion were 241 (10.9%); 161 (7.3%) only had noninflammatory lesions, 404 (18.4%) only inflammatory lesions; and 1,395 (63.4%) presented both types of lesions. In multivariate analysis, the type of lesions was different in light and dark skin phototype adolescents, with more common inflammatory lesions in the light phototype and noninflammatory ones in the dark phototype patients. Height was directly associated with the occurrence of all types of acne, whereas lower fat mass was associated with the occurrence of noninflammatory acne. While daily consumption of whole milk or yogurt was found to be associated with inflammatory acne in crude analysis, the association with milk was not detected and that with yogurt was low in multivariate analysis. CONCLUSION Our results suggest that future studies should explore determinants of noninflammatory and inflammatory acne separately, especially if mixed populations are studied.

Abstract
BACKGROUND Acne vulgaris is a pilosebaceous follicle disorder affecting over 85% of adolescents to some degree. It frequently causes psychological distress that may persist into adulthood due to scarring. Little information about post-acne scarring epidemiology is available. OBJECTIVES To describe prevalence, distribution patterns and associated factors of acne scarring in young males, drawing on a representative population sample from a southern Brazilian city. METHODS A cross-sectional study was undertaken during presentation for military service, which is compulsory for all 18-year-old males. A questionnaire was applied, covering topics like diet, smoking habits, ethnicity, family structure, socio-economic level, as well as specific questions about active acne and resulting scars. Dermatologists conducted the clinical examination. RESULTS A total of 2,201 male adolescents were interviewed and examined. The overall prevalence of acne scarring was 22%. The malar region was the most frequently involved, present in 80% of affected individuals, followed by the frontal region (31.5%), back (17%), anterior chest (8.2%) and mentonian region (6.4%). Correlation between the intensity of clinical acne and the presence of scars was found, but no association was observed with educational level, smoking, ethnicity, obesity or socio-economic status. CONCLUSIONS There is a high prevalence of acne scars among this population. This is the first study to ascertain a correlation between acne scarring and factors such as socio-economic status and educational level. The direct relation between acne severity and scarring indicates that prompt and effective treatment is the best way to reduce scarring.

Abstract
BACKGROUND Hypothesis tests are statistical tools widely used for assessing whether or not
there is an association between two or more variables. These tests provide a
probability of the type 1 error (p-value), which is used to accept or reject the
null study hypothesis. OBJECTIVE To provide a practical guide to help researchers carefully select the most
appropriate procedure to answer the research question. We discuss the logic of
hypothesis testing and present the prerequisites of each procedure based on

Abstract
The selection of instruments that will be used to collect data is a crucial step in the research process. Validity and reliability of the collected data and, above all, their potential comparability with data from previous investigations must be prioritized during this phase. We present a decision tree, which is intended to guide the selection of the instruments employed in research projects. Studies conducted along these lines have greater potential to broaden the knowledge on the studied subject and contribute to addressing truly socially relevant needs.

Abstract
The importance of estimating sample sizes is rarely understood by researchers,
when planning a study. This paper aims to highlight the centrality of sample
size estimations in health research. Examples that help in understanding the
basic concepts involved in their calculation are presented. The scenarios
covered are based more on the epidemiological reasoning and less on mathematical
formulae. Proper calculation of the number of participants in a study diminishes
the likelihood of errors, which are often associated with adverse consequences
in terms of economic, ethical and health aspects.

Abstract
The present paper aims to provide basic guidelines to present epidemiological data
using tables and graphs in Dermatology. Although simple, the preparation of tables
and graphs should follow basic recommendations, which make it much easier to
understand the data under analysis and to promote accurate communication in science.
Additionally, this paper deals with other basic concepts in epidemiology, such as
variable, observation, and data, which are useful both in the exchange of information
between researchers and in the planning and conception of a research project.

Abstract
BACKGROUND Prevalence of tattoos is around 10-26% in men and 10-22% in women, and can
involve negative effects such as: regret, removal attempts, physical and
biological changes of the skin and association with some viral diseases. OBJECTIVE to determine the prevalence, characteristics and factors associated with tattoos
in recruiters joining the military. METHODS the recruiters were examined by dermatologists that documented the presence or
absence of tattoos, as well as their sizes, colors, designs and patterns, and
whether they needed a parent's consent to get a tattoo. RESULTS 1,968 recruiters were examined and the prevalence of tattoos was 10.82% (213),
141 (66.20%) had a single tattoo, 44 (20.66%) two tattoos, 15 (7.04%) three
tattoos, 9 (4.23%) four tattoos, and 4 (1.88%) had more than four. Of the total
sample, 168 (80.77%) reported getting the first tattoo before the age of 18. 158
(74.53%) were monochromatic. In relation to size, 108 (50.70%) had tattoos of up
to 10 cm, 75 (35.21%) had tattoos measuring between 11-20cm, while 30 had ones
over 21cm (14.09%). CONCLUSIONS The population studied had a high prevalence of tattoos for their age, the
percentage of complex (large and polychromatic) tattoos was also high.

Abstract
BACKGROUND Sunlight exposure is responsible for a large number of dermatological diseases.
OBJECTIVE We estimated the prevalence of sunlight exposure and its associated factors in
adults from southern Brazil in a cross-sectional, population-based study. METHODS We investigated a representative sample of individuals aged ≥ 20 years
(n=3,136). Sunlight exposure and its associated factors were evaluated in two
distinct situations: at leisure time and at work. The time period investigated
ranged from December 2004 to March 2005, comprising 120 days of the highest
ultraviolet index in the urban area of the city of Pelotas, in southern Brazil.
The participants were asked about sunlight exposure for at least 20 minutes
between 10 A.M. and 4 P.M. The analysis was stratified by sex, and sunlight
exposure was grouped into five categories. RESULTS Among the 3,136 participants, prevalence of sunlight exposure at the beach was
32.8% (95% CI, 30.3 - 35.2) and 26.3% (95% CI, 24.2 28.3) among men and women,
respectively. The prevalence at work was 39.8% (95% CI, 37.2 - 42.4) among men and
10.5% (95% CI, 9.1 - 12.0) among women. Age was inversely associated with sunlight
exposure. Family income and achieved schooling were positively associated with
sunlight exposure at leisure time and inversely associated with sunglight exposure
at work. Self-reported skin color was not associated. Knowledge of any friend or
relative who has been affected by skin cancer was positively associated with
sunlight exposure among men at work. CONCLUSION Despite the media campaigns on the harmful effects of excessive sunlight exposure,
we found a high prevalence of sunlight exposure during a period of high
ultraviolet index.

Abstract
We report a case of an 80-year-old Brazilian man, farmer, with lesions on the dorsum of the hand. A direct mycological examination, cultivation and microculture slide observation was performed. The sequencing of ITS1-5.8S rDNA-ITS2 region was carried out and the etiological agent confirmed as Exophiala spinifera. The in vitro susceptibility of this isolate to antifungal agents alone and in combination was evaluated. This is the third case of phaeohyphomycosis caused by Exophiala spinifera in Brazil.

Abstract
BACKGROUND The prevalence of seborrheic dermatitis (SD) in the general population is variable in the literature. Factors associated with SD are not well understood. OBJECTIVE To verify the prevalence of scalp SD in a selected survey of male adolescents on mandatory military service and to find possible associated factors (skin color, socioeconomic level, triceps skin fold, acne, and tobacco consumption). METHODS This cross-sectional study included 18-year-old male adolescents on compulsory military service in a southern Brazilian city. Scalp SD was considered as erythema and scaling in any part of the scalp. Skin color, socioeconomic level, triceps skin fold, acne, and tabagism comprised the independent variables studied in our population. RESULTS A total of 2201 adolescents entered the study. The global prevalence of scalp SD was 11%. White skin [adjusted prevalence ratio (PR) 1.42; 95% CI 1.06-1.92; P = 0.02] and triceps skin fold >19.5 mm (adjusted PR 1.56; 95% CI 1.12-2.18; P = 0.009) were significantly associated with scalp SD. The other variables were not associated with the outcome. CONCLUSIONS Prevalence of scalp SD in our survey of male adolescents was 11%. The occurrence of scalp SD was associated with white skin and a higher body fat content.

Abstract
Prospective study compared the agreement between the direct microscopy and fungical culture from subungueal samples of the patients with clinical suspicion of feet's onychomycosis. The agreement occurred in 56.1% of the exams with dermatophytes, in 52.4% by others fungi and in 90.4% of the negative cases, 0,54 according to the Kappa`s test. In 39.3% of the onychomycosis caused by dermatophytes and 31.8% by nondermatophytes, these were identificated only for direct microscopy. The direct microscopic showed more sensibility compared with the culture, being superior in 19.5% of the total sample and maintaining agreement with the culture in 71.5% of the sample.

Abstract
Facial miliary osteoma is characterized by the presence of multiple normochromic papules, affecting mainly middle-aged women, with a previous history of acne. A 39-year-old HIV positive female patient presented hardened papules which had appeared 3 years before, located on the malar region, glabella and mentum. Optical microscopy showed spherical bone formations in the dermis. Computerized tomography of the face revealed small calcifications on the surface consistent with bone formation. Multiple facial osteomas are rare as well as its association with HIV virus infection.

Abstract
Erythema elevatum diutinum is a rare presentation of cutaneous vasculitis. Typical lesions are papules, plaques, and nodules that may coalesce and later turn to yellow-brown color. The extensor surface of the extremities is the most involved area and older lesions may present xanthomatous appearance. Light microscopy of acute lesions shows neutrophilic, perivascular infiltrate with dermal fibrin deposits, endothelial expansion, and leukocytoclasis. We present a case of erythema elevatum diutinum without associated disease.

Abstract
OBJECTIVE To study the prevalence of wheezing patterns and their associations with independent variables. METHODS Cohort study of live births in 1993 in Pelotas, Brazil. A systematic subsample (20%) of the original cohort was evaluated at 6 months, 12 months and 4 years. At 10-12 years, 87.5% of the original cohort was contacted. Wheezing was categorized: transient, wheezing at 4 years but not at 10-12; persistent, wheezing at all evaluations; late-onset, wheezing at 10-12 years. Independent variables were analyzed: gender; skin color; family income; smoking/asthma during pregnancy; breastfeeding; respiratory infection/diarrhea (during the 1st year); family members with asthma/allergy (at 4 years and at 10-12); physician-diagnosed rhinitis/eczema (at 10-12 years). RESULTS The subsample comprised 897 adolescents. Wheezing patterns were expressed as prevalence (95% CI): transient, 43.9% (40.7-47.2); persistent, 6.4% (4.8-8.0); and late-onset, 3.3% (2.2-4.5). The transient pattern was more common in children from low-income families, children breastfed for less time, children with a history of respiratory infections (during the 1st year) and children with asthma in the family (at 4 years). The persistent pattern was almost twice as common in males, in children whose mothers had asthma during pregnancy, in children with respiratory infections (during the 1st year) and in children with asthma in the family (at 4 and 10-12 years). The late-onset pattern was more prevalent among those with asthma in the family (at 10-12 years) and those diagnosed with rhinitis (at 10-12 years), being less prevalent among those reporting respiratory infections (during the 1st year) and those diagnosed with eczema (at 10-12 years). CONCLUSIONS Knowledge of the associations of wheezing patterns allows us to adopt preventive and therapeutic measures.

Abstract
The objective of this study was to describe and compare the tricipital (TSF) and subscapular skinfold (SSF) thickness according to demographic, socioeconomic, behavioral, and biological characteristics in adolescents from Pelotas, Rio Grande do Sul State, Brazil. A cross-sectional study nested in a birth cohort (n = 4,452; mean age = 11 years) was conducted. The outcomes were defined as skinfold thickness >or= 90th percentile of the National Center for Health Statistics reference curve. The prevalence rates for elevated TSF and SSF were 20.2% and 17.3%, respectively, in boys and 14.2% and 10.5% in girls. The strongest factor associated with adiposity in boys was socioeconomic status (p < 0.001), whereas among girls it was maternal body mass index (p < 0.001). Low physical activity (< 300 minutes/week) was associated with elevated SSF only among girls, while schooling was associated with increased TSF and SSF only among boys. Diet, skin color, and sedentary behavior were not associated with any of the outcomes. We concluded that the main predictors of adiposity were maternal and socioeconomic characteristics. We recommend that further studies on this issue apply other methods to estimate body composition in order to confirm our results.

Abstract
BACKGROUND Sunscreen use is important for the prevention of skin cancer, but population-based information about its prevalence and associated factors are scarce in Brazil. OBJECTIVE We sought to evaluate the prevalence and associated factors with sunscreen use among Brazilian adults. METHODS We conducted a cross-sectional population-based study with a representative sample of adults aged 20 years or older living in the urban area of the city of Pelotas, Southern Brazil. We evaluated sunscreen use at the beach, at work, and during outdoor sports, for at least 20 minutes between 10 am and 4 Pm, from December 2004 to March 2005. The outcome measure was dichotomized in individuals who never used sunscreen, and those who used sunscreen, regardless of frequency. RESULTS Prevalence of sunscreen use at the beach, work, and outdoor sports was 60.8% (95% confidence interval 55.6-66.0), 13.7% (95% confidence interval 10.7-16.6%), and 30.2% (95% confidence interval 24.1-36.3), respectively. At work, the median number of days of exposure was 70 days, whereas at the beach it was 10, and for sports it was 16. Women, whites, those with higher educational achievement, and those with higher income were more likely to use sunscreen. LIMITATIONS No data on adequacy of sunscreen use were gathered. CONCLUSION Our data show that the individuals most exposed to sunlight are those who use sunscreen the least. Interventions targeting this group are required, because this is also the population with the lowest socioeconomic level.

Abstract

Abstract
Infections caused by dermathophytes in the scrotal skin are uncommon especially due to Microsporum gypseum, which may form scutular or favus-like lesions. We report two patients with this type of tinea: one immune suppressed by HIV infection and another immunocompetent without comorbidity. In the literature we found only two reports in immunocompetent patients and some in immune suppressed with similar symptoms.
