Distinct and sex-specific expression of mu opioid receptors in anterior cingulate and somatosensory S1 cortical areas

ABSTRACT

The anterior cingulate cortex (ACC) processes the affective component of pain, whereas the primary somatosensory cortex (S1) is involved in its sensory-discriminative component. Injection of morphine in the ACC has been reported to be analgesic, and endogenous opioids in this area are required for pain relief. Mu opioid receptors (MORs) are expressed in both ACC and S1; however, the identity of MOR-expressing cortical neurons remains unknown. Using the Oprm1-mCherry mouse line, we performed selective patch clamp recordings of MOR+ neurons, as well as immunohistochemistry with validated neuronal markers, to determine the identity and laminar distribution of MOR+ neurons in ACC and S1. We found that the electrophysiological signatures of MOR+ neurons differ significantly between these 2 areas, with interneuron-like firing patterns more frequent in ACC. While MOR+ somatostatin interneurons are more prominent in ACC, MOR+ excitatory neurons and MOR+ parvalbumin interneurons are more prominent in S1. Our results suggest a differential contribution of MOR-mediated modulation to ACC and S1 outputs. We also found that females had a greater density of MOR+ neurons compared with males in both areas. In summary, we conclude that MOR-dependent opioidergic signaling in the cortex displays sexual dimorphisms and likely evolved to meet the distinct function of pain-processing circuits in limbic and sensory cortical areas.

Search for Cosmic-Ray Boosted Sub-GeV Dark Matter Using Recoil Protons at Super-Kamiokande

We report a search for cosmic-ray boosted dark matter with protons using the 0.37  megaton×years data collected at Super-Kamiokande experiment during the 1996-2018 period (SKI-IV phase). We searched for an excess of proton recoils above the atmospheric neutrino background from the vicinity of the Galactic Center. No such excess is observed, and limits are calculated for two reference models of dark matter with either a constant interaction cross section or through a scalar mediator. This is the first experimental search for boosted dark matter with hadrons using directional information. The results present the most stringent limits on cosmic-ray boosted dark matter and exclude the dark matter-nucleon elastic scattering cross section between 10^{-33}cm^{2} and 10^{-27}cm^{2} for dark matter mass from 1  MeV/c^{2} to 300  MeV/c^{2}.

Perspectives on the Management of Surplus Dairy Calves in the United States and Canada

The care of surplus dairy calves is a significant issue for the United States and Canadian dairy industries. Surplus dairy calves commonly experience poor welfare as evidenced by high levels of mortality and morbidity, and negative affective states resulting from limited opportunities to express natural behaviors. Many of these challenges are a result of a disaggregated production system, beginning with calf management at the dairy farm of origin and ending at a calf-raising facility, with some calves experiencing long-distance transportation and commingling at auction markets or assembly yards in the interim. Thus, the objectives of this narrative review are to highlight specific challenges associated with raising surplus dairy calves in the U.S. and Canada, how these challenges originate and could be addressed, and discuss future directions that may start with refinements of the current system, but ultimately require a system change. The first critical area to address is the management of surplus dairy calves on the dairy farm of origin. Good neonatal calf care reduces the risk of disease and mortality, however, many dairy farms in Canada and the U.S. do not provide sufficient colostrum or nutrition to surplus calves. Transportation and marketing are also major issues. Calves can be transported more than 24 consecutive hours, and most calves are sold through auction markets or assembly yards which increases disease exposure. Management of calves at calf-raisers is another area of concern. Calves are generally housed individually and fed at low planes of nutrition, resulting in poor affective states and high rates of morbidity and mortality. Strategies to manage high-risk calves identified at arrival could be implemented to reduce disease burden, however, increasing the plane of nutrition and improving housing systems will likely have a more significant impact on health and welfare. However, we argue the current system is not sustainable and new solutions for surplus calves should be considered. A coordinated and holistic approach including substantial change on source dairy farms and multiple areas within the system used to market and raise surplus dairy calves, can lead to more sustainable veal and beef production with improved calf outcomes.

The transCampus Metabolic Training Programme Explores the Link of SARS-CoV-2 Virus to Metabolic Disease

Currently, we are experiencing a true pandemic of a communicable disease by the virus SARS-CoV-2 holding the whole world firmly in its grasp. Amazingly and unfortunately, this virus uses a metabolic and endocrine pathway via ACE2 to enter our cells causing damage and disease. Our international research training programme funded by the German Research Foundation has a clear mission to train the best students wherever they may come from to learn to tackle the enormous challenges of diabetes and its complications for our society. A modern training programme in diabetes and metabolism does not only involve a thorough understanding of classical physiology, biology and clinical diabetology but has to bring together an interdisciplinary team. With the arrival of the coronavirus pandemic, this prestigious and unique metabolic training programme is facing new challenges but also new opportunities. The consortium of the training programme has recognized early on the need for a guidance and for practical recommendations to cope with the COVID-19 pandemic for the community of patients with metabolic disease, obesity and diabetes. This involves the optimal management from surgical obesity programmes to medications and insulin replacement. We also established a global registry analyzing the dimension and role of metabolic disease including new onset diabetes potentially triggered by the virus. We have involved experts of infectious disease and virology to our faculty with this metabolic training programme to offer the full breadth and scope of expertise needed to meet these scientific challenges. We have all learned that this pandemic does not respect or heed any national borders and that we have to work together as a global community. We believe that this transCampus metabolic training programme provides a prime example how an international team of established experts in the field of metabolism can work together with students from all over the world to address a new pandemic.

Dorsal horn disinhibition and movement-induced behaviour in a rat model of inflammatory arthritis

OBJECTIVES

Alterations beyond joint inflammation such as changes in dorsal horn (DH) excitability contribute to pain in inflammatory arthritis (IA). More complete understanding of specific underlying mechanisms will be important to define novel targets for the treatment of IA pain. Pre-clinical models are useful, but relevant pain assays are vital for successful clinical translation. For this purpose, a method is presented to assess movement-induced pain-related behaviour changes that was subsequently used to investigate DH disinhibition in IA.

METHODS

IA was induced by intra-articular injection of complete Freund's adjuvant (CFA) in male rats, and weight distribution was assessed before and after walking on a treadmill. To confirm increased activity in nociception-related pathways, fos expression was assessed in the superficial DH, including in nociceptive neurons, identified by neurokinin 1 (NK1) immunoreactivity, and interneurons. Inhibitory terminal density onto NK1+ neurons was assessed and lastly, a cohort of animals was treated for 3 days with gabapentin.

RESULTS

At 4 weeks post-CFA, walking reduced weight distribution to the affected joint and increased DH fos expression, including in NK1+ neurons. Neuronal activity in inhibitory cells and inhibitory terminal density on NK1+ neurons were decreased in CFA-treated animals compared with controls. Treatment with gabapentin led to recovered behaviour and DH neuronal activity pattern in CFA-treated animals.

CONCLUSION

We describe an assay to assess movement-induced pain-related behaviour changes in a rodent IA model. Furthermore, our results suggest that disinhibition may contribute to pain related to movement in IA.

First Measurement of the Total Neutron Cross Section on Argon between 100 and 800 MeV

We report the first measurement of the neutron cross section on argon in the energy range of 100-800 MeV. The measurement was obtained with a 4.3-h exposure of the Mini-CAPTAIN detector to the WNR/LANSCE beam at LANL. The total cross section is measured from the attenuation coefficient of the neutron flux as it traverses the liquid argon volume. A set of 2631 candidate interactions is divided in bins of the neutron kinetic energy calculated from time-of-flight measurements. These interactions are reconstructed with custom-made algorithms specifically designed for the data in a time projection chamber the size of the Mini-CAPTAIN detector. The energy averaged cross section is 0.91±0.10(stat)±0.09(syst)  b. A comparison of the measured cross section is made to the GEANT4 and FLUKA event generator packages, where the energy averaged cross sections in this range are 0.60 and 0.68 b, respectively.

Search for Boosted Dark Matter Interacting with Electrons in Super-Kamiokande

A search for boosted dark matter using 161.9 kt yr of Super-Kamiokande IV data is presented. We search for an excess of elastically scattered electrons above the atmospheric neutrino background, with a visible energy between 100 MeV and 1 TeV, pointing back to the Galactic center or the Sun. No such excess is observed. Limits on boosted dark matter event rates in multiple angular cones around the Galactic center and Sun are calculated. Limits are also calculated for a baseline model of boosted dark matter produced from cold dark matter annihilation or decay. This is the first experimental search for boosted dark matter from the Galactic center or the Sun interacting in a terrestrial detector.

Functional differences between neurochemically defined populations of inhibitory interneurons in the rat spinal dorsal horn

In order to understand how nociceptive information is processed in the spinal dorsal horn we need to unravel the complex synaptic circuits involving interneurons, which constitute the vast majority of the neurons in laminae I-III. The main limitation has been the difficulty in defining functional populations among these cells. We have recently identified 4 non-overlapping classes of inhibitory interneuron, defined by expression of galanin, neuropeptide Y (NPY), neuronal nitric oxide synthase (nNOS) and parvalbumin, in the rat spinal cord. In this study we demonstrate that these form distinct functional populations that differ in terms of sst(2A) receptor expression and in their responses to painful stimulation. The sst(2A) receptor was expressed by nearly all of the nNOS- and galanin-containing inhibitory interneurons but by few of those with NPY and none of the parvalbumin cells. Many galanin- and NPY-containing cells exhibited phosphorylated extracellular signal-regulated kinases (pERK) after mechanical, thermal or chemical noxious stimuli, but very few nNOS-containing cells expressed pERK after any of these stimuli. However, many nNOS-positive inhibitory interneurons up-regulated Fos after noxious thermal stimulation or injection of formalin, but not after capsaicin injection. Parvalbumin cells did not express either activity-dependent marker following any of these stimuli. These results suggest that interneurons belonging to the NPY, nNOS and galanin populations are involved in attenuating pain, and for NPY and nNOS cells this is likely to result from direct inhibition of nociceptive projection neurons. They also suggest that the nociceptive inputs to the nNOS cells differ from those to the galanin and NPY populations.

Are the prevalence and treatment of asthma similar in elite athletes and the aged-matched non-athlete population?

The objective of this study was to determine the prevalence of asthma and use of asthma medications in elite athletes compared with an age-matched non-athlete population. Data were collected from the respiratory component of annual medical screening of 424 elite athletes from the Queensland Academy of Sport. Measures included the prevalence of current asthma and ever doctor-diagnosed asthma, and the prevalence of use of treatment for asthma including beta-agonists and inhaled corticosteroid medication. The prevalence of current asthma in athletes aged 18-29 years was 14% (95% CI, 9-19%), which did not differ significantly from the prevalence in the non-athlete control population (11%; 95% CI, 9-12%, P=0.3). Of athletes with current asthma, 27% were not taking any medications for asthma, and 25% were treated with short-acting beta-agonist medications alone and were not taking inhaled corticosteroids. These data indicate that the overall cumulative and period prevalence of asthma in Queensland athletes is similar to that in the general age-matched population. Athletes use beta-agonists with a frequency similar to the general population.

Sociology and the public understanding of science: from rationalization to rhetoric

This paper contributes to the reappraisal of sociological theories of modernity inspired by the sociology of scientific knowledge (SSK). As much as these theories rely on received ideas about the nature of science that SSK has called into doubt, so do they rely on ideas about the public understanding of science. Public understanding of science has been assumed to conform to the monolithic logic and perception of science associated with rationalization, leading to an impoverished view of the cognitive outlook of the modern individual. Rationalization has become the basis for the construction of theoretical critique of science divorced from any clear reference to public understanding, with the result that theory has encountered considerable problems in accounting for public scepticism towards science. However, rather than question rationalization, the more typical strategy has been to propose radical changes in the modernization process, such as postmodernism and the risk society. Against this, an alternative view of public understanding is advanced drawn from SSK and rhetorical psychology. The existence of the sociological critique of science, and SSK in particular, suggests that the meaning of science in modernity is not monolithic but multiple, arising out of a central dilemma over the universal form of knowledge-claims and their necessarily particular, human and social grounding. This dilemma plays out not only in intellectual discourses about science, but also in the public's understanding of science. This argument is used to call for further sociological research into public understanding and to encourage sociologists to recognize the central importance of the topic to a proper understanding of modernity.

Techniques for the optimization of proteomic strategies based on head column stacking capillary electrophoresis

Proteomics is the large-scale study of the proteins related to a genome. Presently, proteomic procedures have relied on mass spectrometry as a tool of choice to perform analysis of proteins. Optimization and understanding of the different steps involved in proteomics using mass spectrometry is expensive and time-consuming and, for this reason, have been typically paid insufficient attention. However, optimization becomes a critical issue as we try to analyze ever shrinking amounts of proteins. We present here the development of a technique that allows the rapid, sensitive, semiquantitative, and automated optimization of the processes involved in proteomics. Furthermore, it allows the rapid testing of new methodologies without having to rely on expensive mass spectrometric techniques. The technique, based on head column stacking capillary zone electrophoresis, allows the concentration, separation, and analysis of protein digests at concentrations from high picomoles to subfemtomoles per microliter and sample volumes from a few microliters to a few hundred microliters produced by proteomic processes. Furthermore, the incorporation of UV detection in the system allows the tracking of the relative changes in peptide levels observed during optimization. In addition, all the buffers and solvents used in this technique are compatible with its future coupling to electrospray ionization mass spectrometry. The potential of this technique for the analysis of low-abundance proteins is demonstrated using peptide standards and tryptic digests of standard proteins. Moreover, we exemplify the application of this technique in proteomic prototyping for the rapid and automated study of the procedure of enzymatic digestion of proteins.

Exercise-related chronic lower leg pain

BACKGROUND

Musculoskeletal injuries result from physical activity and seem to have a dose-response relationship to the amount of that activity. The more exposure to training or sport the greater the risk of injury.

OBJECTIVE

This article examines the common causes of chronic exertional leg pain in the community.

DISCUSSION

The common presentations include muscle injury, medial tibial stress syndrome, stress fractures of the lower limb, chronic exertional compartment syndromes as well as nerve entrapments. A description of these and an algorithm to assist in the diagnostic dilemma are presented.

Squash racquets. A review of physiology and medicine

Squash is a moderate to high intensity sport which demands specific fitness. Squash at any level places a high demand on the aerobic system for energy delivery during play and recovery. In addition, the sport requires bursts of intense, anaerobic physical activity involving the lactic anaerobic energy system. Players must possess appropriate levels of local muscular endurance, strength, power, flexibility and speed, combined with agility, balance and co-ordination. Irrespective of the standard of play, aerobic fitness training and specific anaerobic training should be undertaken by all who play or intend to play squash. Aerobic fitness for the individual who is new to the game and has little training background can be improved using low intensity continuous running. Training sessions and matches should be preceded by warm-up and flexibility exercises which may reduce the chance of injury and enhance readiness to perform. Despite squash being an indoor sport, it is likely that play in hot and humid weather may generate significant thermal loads with the associated elevations in heart rate. Fluid losses of 2 L/min and rectal temperatures of 39 degrees C may occur, thereby increasing the cardiovascular stress of participation and the risk of heat illness. Sudden death and other manifestations of heart disease can occur in squash, therefore advice regarding the safe participation for those with, or who have the potential to develop disease appears essential. For those under 40 years of age who are well and have no known heart disease, medical clearance is not mandatory prior to taking up squash; for such individuals, regular medical monitoring may be unnecessary. For healthy individuals older than 40 years of age irrespective of health status, but particularly for those with coronary disease or relevant risk factors, a medical checkup is recommended prior to, and at least annually after taking up squash. Healthy individuals older than 40 years of age with one or more risk factors require a medical checkup prior to commencing squash for the first time and at regular intervals (every 2 years) thereafter. These individuals should also have a medically supervised exercise test. Those individuals older than 40 years of age who have a known history of heart disease, most commonly coronary artery disease, may play squash if it is demonstrated that, on examination or following therapy or surgery, they can exercise safely to a high workload. Most eye injuries which occur in squash are related to eye/ball and eye/racquet contact. The incidence of injury is very low but such injuries may be totally preventable. Ideally, all players should wear protective eye apparatus. The "ideal' protective apparatus should comply with the Australian/New Zealand Standard for eye protectors for racquet sports. It should be recognised at the outset that there is a paucity of specific data regarding squash and pregnancy. Most women with normal pregnancies may continue to exercise and play squash particularly in the early stages of pregnancy but should notify their physician of their intention to do so. Musculo-skeletal injuries to the lower limb dominate most studies and common injuries include sprains and strains to the back and ankles. Of particular interest is the development of degenerative hip disease in elite squash players necessitating retirement or curtailment of activity in the third decade. Dealing with injuries and illness that are attributed to squash requires an approach based on prevention as well as on appropriate injury management.

DNA amplification and restriction endonuclease analysis for differentiation of 12 species and taxa of Nocardia, including recognition of four new taxa within the Nocardia asteroides complex

Nineteen reference and 156 clinical strains of the genus Nocardia belonging to 12 taxonomic groups were studied for restriction fragment length polymorphism (RFLP) by using an amplified 439-bp segment of the 65-kDa heat shock protein gene. Of 30 restriction endonucleases, digestion with MspI and then digestion with BsaHI produced RFLP band patterns which separated all 12 groups except N. asteroides type IV from 6 of 12 N. transvalensis isolates and N. carnea from the N. asteroides type VI isolates. Commonly encountered species such as N. nova, N. farcinica, N. brasiliensis sensu stricto, and N. otitidiscaviarum were easily separated. Each taxon resulted in a single RFLP band pattern that included > or = 96% of all biochemically grouped isolates for 9 of 12 taxa with MspI and for 8 of 12 taxa with BsaHI. With the use of both patterns, only 6 of 175 (3.4%) isolates failed to fit the biochemically defined group patterns. These studies provide the first evidence for the separate identities of four antibiogram-defined (but currently unnamed) groups within the N. asteroides complex (types I, II, IV, and VI) and the presence of two subgroups within N. transvalensis. They also provide genotypic evidence for the separate identities of N. nova and N. farcinica. The lack of BstEII recognition sites in amplicons obtained from nocardiae provides a simple and rapid method for the differentiation of nocardiae from mycobacteria. DNA amplification with RFLP analysis is the first rapid method that distinguishes all clinically significant taxa and recognized species within the genus Nocardia.

Statistical packages for the Macintosh

These programs represent the entry of the Mac into major statistical computing. We believe that for the physician researcher who is not a statistician, they make the Mac the platform for data analysis. We found that statistics, research design, and data analysis seemed different and much less intimidating to us and our trainees when approached through the Mac. We have reviewed the versions of these programs available at the time of this writing, in May 1992; potential buyers should contact the software publisher for information about more recent upgrades. At this point, our recommendations would be as follows: If you are wedded to SPSS or Minitab, try the Mac versions, and you will be impressed. Otherwise, the choice is between SYSTAT, which has been around long enough to demonstrate its richness and capacity to build on its strengths, and JMP, a brash newcomer, which demonstrates that you can teach an old dog (SAS) new tricks. StatView and SuperANOVA, while endowed with intuitive, easy-to-use interfaces, lack online help--a feature we consider important in a statistics package. We anticipate that the future will lead to simplification of the SYSTAT interface and the addition of more analytic capacities to JMP--and who knows what the next generation of competitors will bring?

Etiology of low back pain in elite boardsailors

Seven elite boardsailors reporting nonradiating low back pain without leg pain during sailing volunteered for detailed examination. In these subjects, the onset of pain was limited to those occasions when sailing positions were held for a significant period of time, e.g., close hauled sailing or in light winds. No pain was described at any other time. The determination of possible antecedent factors was based on the results of clinical assessment, radiological evaluation, and computer tomography (CT) scanning. Apart from limited flexibility in some subjects, the clinical examination of these athletes was normal; CT changes in this group were limited to disc protrusions and bulges, and pars interarticularis defects. Despite the small number of subjects in the present report, it appears that the frequency of these problems exceeds that in the normal population. It may be possible to suggest that risk factors such as body position during prolonged sailing, particularly under light wind conditions without a harness, and limited flexibility may be associated with the radiological findings and may be implicated in the presence of low back pain, although further investigations appears warranted.

Proton magnetic resonance imaging and phosphorus-31 magnetic resonance spectroscopy studies of bromobenzene-induced liver damage in the rat

Respiratory-gated proton magnetic resonance imaging was used to study the response of the rat liver in situ to bromobenzene, a classic hepatotoxicant. A localized region of high proton signal intensity in the perihilar region of the liver was seen 24-48 hr after an intraperitoneal injection of bromobenzene. Localized proton magnetic resonance spectra from within this region indicated that the increased proton signal intensity was not due to accumulation of fat in the liver, but primarily due to a longer T2 for the proton resonance of water. This is consistent with acute edema in this localized region. In vivo 31P magnetic resonance spectroscopy studies of the same rat livers in situ were performed. Spectroscopic conditions were determined whereby localized, quantitative 31P spectra could be obtained. Using these methods, 10 mmol/kg bromobenzene was found after 24 hr to cause a number of statistically significant (p less than 0.05) effects: a decrease in adenosine 5'-triphosphate levels from 4.1 +/- 0.5 to 3.0 +/- 0.5 mM, a decrease in phosphodiester levels from 11.3 +/- 0.9 to 9.3 +/- 0.7 mM and an increase in the phosphomonoesters from 3.0 +/- 0.4 to 5.5 +/- 1.2 mM (mean +/- standard deviation). High resolution in vitro 31P spectra of perchloric acid extracts of these rat livers showed that the increased phosphomonoester resonance was due to a selective 4.3-fold increase in phosphocholine. Thus, our in vivo and in vitro 31P magnetic resonance spectra are consistent with the hypothesis that a phosphatidylcholine-specific phospholipase C (generating phosphocholine and diacylglycerol) is activated during tissue damage. Both the imaging and spectroscopy results obtained with bromobenzene closely resemble CCl4-induced liver changes previously reported, and may reflect a generalized response of the liver to any acutely acting toxic chemical.

Relationship between performance on lumbar dynamometry and Waddell score in a population with low-back pain

A prospective, blinded cohort study was performed to investigate the relationship between biomechanical variables measured during lumbar dynamometry and several psychological tests and measures of nonorganic pain behavior. Eighty-five men, aged 18-60 years, who had had low-back pain for longer than 5 weeks participated in the study. Nonorganic pain behavior was measured with the Waddell score, and lumbar function was measured with the Isostation B-200 Lumbar Dynamometer. Two brief psychological tests, the Coopersmith Self-Esteem inventory and an analog self-rating of wellness, were also administered. Relationships between biomechanical variables and psychological tests were calculated with the t-test, the Pearson r correlation, analysis of variance, and multiple step-wise logistic regression. Patients who exhibited excessive illness behavior (Waddell Scores 3-5) performed significantly worse (P less than .01) on almost all biomechanical variables. The Coopersmith Self-Esteem Score and "feelings" score had a slightly weaker but still significant correlation with motor performance. The results suggest that poor performance on biomechanical testing in this population may be a form of abnormal illness behavior and thus may not accurately reflect organic alterations of neuromusculoskeletal function.

Finite-element analysis of vibrational modes in piezoelectric ceramic disks

The natural vibrational modes of axially symmetric piezoelectric ceramic disks have been calculated by the finite-element method. The disks are of the type used as active elements in compressional wave ultrasonic transducers, and are electrically polarized in thickness with full electrodes on the disk's major faces. To optimize disk geometry for ultrasonic transducer application, the dependence of the vibrational modes on the disk diameter-to-thickness ratio for ratios from 0.2 (a tall cylinder) to 10.0 (a thin disk) has been studied. Series and parallel resonance frequencies for each of the modes are determined through an eigenfrequency analysis, and effective electromechanical coupling coefficients are calculated. The modal displacement fields in the disk are calculated to determine the physical nature of each mode. An analysis of the complete spectrum of piezoelectrically active modes as a function of diameter-thickness ratio is presented for the ceramic PZT-5H, including and identification of radial, edge, length expander, thickness shear, and thickness extensional vibrations. From this analysis, optimal diameter-to-thickness ratios for good transducer performance are discussed.

Thin-film induced effects on the stability of SAW devices

Measurements show an upward shift on the order of 50 ppm in the resonant frequency of a surface acoustic wave (SAW) resonator, as taken before and after the device is hermetically sealed in vacuum following a certain glass-frit sealing process. The authors analyze some of the thin-film phenomena that are potential sources of the observed frequency shift and that may affect the long-term stability of such devices. Various factors contributing to the shifts include: 1) intrinsic or structural stresses in the bonding layers as well as in the interdigital transducer (IDT) fingers; 2) thermal stresses due to the differences in thermal expansion coefficients of the metallic IDT fingers and the bonding agent (glass frits) from those of quartz; 3) partial oxidation of the IDT fingers and transmission lines during the frit glazing process; and 4) possible metal diffusion into quartz. Quantitative estimates of the contribution of two factors to the total observed frequency shift after a certain glass-frit sealing process are provided. Rough estimates of the frequency shifts due to the oxidized film are made from the dispersion curves for a uniform thin aluminum film and for its oxide film as fully plated on a quartz substrate. It is concluded that the results may provide a way of estimating the magnitude of the intrinsic stress for a given long-term stability of the SAW device.

Quantitative measurement of the total, peroxyl radical-trapping antioxidant capability of human blood plasma by controlled peroxidation. The important contribution made by plasma proteins

Plasma obtained from fasted humans has been analysed for total radical-trapping antioxidant content by subjecting it to controlled peroxidation using the thermal decomposition of water-soluble azobis (2-amidinopropane hydrochloride) at 37 degrees C to produce peroxyl radicals at a known, steady rate. It is found that the total radical-trapping antioxidant content is rather similar for the 7 subjects that have been tested and, furthermore, it is 10-20-times larger than the effect attributable to vitamin E alone. Although it is shown that urate and ascorbate augment the contribution from vitamin E, their contributions (21-34 and 0-2%, respectively) still leave 57-73% of the total antioxidant content unaccounted for. Evidence is presented to show that this previously unrecognized large reserve of antioxidant capacity is attributable to the plasma proteins.
