Abstract
Muonic helium atom hyperfine structure (HFS) measurements are a sensitive tool to test the three-body atomic system and bound-state quantum electrodynamics theory, and determine fundamental constants of the negative muon magnetic moment and mass. The world's most intense pulsed negative muon beam at the Muon Science Facility of the Japan Proton Accelerator Research Complex allows improvement of previous measurements and testing further CPT invariance by comparing the magnetic moments and masses of positive and negative muons (second-generation leptons). We report new ground-state HFS measurements of muonic helium-4 atoms at a near-zero magnetic field, performed for the first time using a small admixture of CH_{4} as an electron donor to form neutral muonic helium atoms efficiently. Our analysis gives Δν=4464.980(20) MHz (4.5 ppm), which is more precise than both previous measurements at weak and high fields. The muonium ground-state HFS was also measured under the same conditions to investigate the isotopic effect on the frequency shift due to the gas density dependence in He with CH_{4} admixture and compared with previous studies. Muonium and muonic helium can be regarded as light and heavy hydrogen isotopes with an isotopic mass ratio of 36. No isotopic effect was observed within the current experimental precision.

Abstract
Complement component 3 (C3) deficiency has recently been known as a cause of constipation, without studies on the therapeutic efficacy. To evaluate the therapeutic agents against C3-deficiency-induced constipation, improvements in the constipation-related parameters and the associated molecular mechanisms were examined in FVB/N-C3em1Hlee/Korl knockout (C3 KO) mice treated with uridine (Urd) and the aqueous extract of Liriope platyphylla L. (AEtLP) with laxative activity. The stool parameters and gastrointestinal (GI) transit were increased in Urd- and AEtLP-treated C3 KO mice compared with the vehicle (Veh)-treated C3 KO mice. Urd and AEtLP treatment improved the histological structure, junctional complexes of the intestinal epithelial barrier (IEB), mucin secretion ability, and water retention capacity. Also, an improvement in the composition of neuronal cells, the regulation of excitatory function mediated via the 5-hydroxytryptamine (5-HT) receptors and muscarinic acetylcholine receptors (mAChRs), and the regulation of the inhibitory function mediated via the neuronal nitric oxide synthase (nNOS) and inducible NOS (iNOS) were detected in the enteric nervous system (ENS) of Urd- and AEtLP-treated C3 KO mice. Therefore, the results of the present study suggest that C3-deficiency-induced constipation can improve with treatment with Urd and AEtLP via the regulation of the mucin secretion ability, water retention capacity, and ENS function.

Abstract
Natural phenolic compounds have antioxidant properties owing to their free radical-scavenging capability. The combined effect of a mixture of phenolic compounds has been studied; however, the detailed investigation for finding a correlation between single phenolic molecules and antioxidant activity has not been explored. Herein, we revealed that the number of phenolic hydroxyl groups in phenolics played a central role in their antioxidant capacity. Based on the finding, tannic acid showed the most effective antioxidant potential, e.g., 76% in tannic acid versus 22% in vitamin C as a standard antioxidant component. Because cancer progression is closely related to oxidative processes at the cellular level, we further applied the surface treatment of tannic acid drug-delivery nanocarriers. Tannic acid-loaded nanocarriers reduced reactive oxygen species of cancer cells as much as 41% of vehicle treatment and remodeled cytoskeletal network. By a gelatin degradation study, TA-loaded nanocarrier-treated cells induced 44.6% reduction of degraded area than vehicle-treated cells, implying a potential of blocking invasiveness of cancer cells.

Abstract
This study characterised the changes in global gene expression in the lung of ICR mice in response to the inflammation and fibrosis induced by the inhalation of 0.5 μm polystyrene (PS)-nanoplastics (NPs) at various concentrations (4, 8, and 16 μg/mL) for 2 weeks. The total RNA extracted from the lung tissue of NPs-inhaled mice was hybridised into oligonucleotide microarrays. Significant upregulation was detected in several inflammatory responses, including the number of immune cells in bronchoalveolar lavage fluid (BALF), the expression level of inflammatory cytokines, mucin secretion, and histopathological changes, while they accumulated average of 13.38 ± 1.0 μg/g in the lungs of the inhaled ICR mice. Similar responses were observed regarding the levels of fibrosis-related factors in the NPs-inhaled lung of ICR mice, such as pulmonary parenchymal area, expression of pro-fibrotic marker genes, and TGF-β1 downstream signalling without any significant hepatotoxicity and nephrotoxicity. In microarray analyses, 60 genes were upregulated, and 55 genes were downregulated in the lung of ICR mice during inflammation and fibrosis induced by NPs inhalation compared to the Vehicle-inhaled mice. Among these genes, many were categorised into several ontology categories, including the anatomical structure, binding, membrane, and metabolic process. Furthermore, the major genes in the upregulated categories included Igkv14-126000, Egr1, Scel, Lamb3, and Upk3b. In contrast, the major genes in the down-regulated categories were Olfr417, Olfr519, Rps16, Rap2b, and Vmn1r193. These results suggest several gene functional groups and individual genes as specific biomarkers respond to inflammation and fibrosis induced by PS-NPs inhalation in ICR mice. Abstract
Abietic acid (AA) is known to have beneficial effects on inflammation, photoaging, osteoporosis, cancer, and obesity; however, its efficacy on atopic dermatitis (AD) has not been reported. We investigated the anti-AD effects of AA, which was newly isolated from rosin, in an AD model. To achieve this, AA was isolated from rosin under conditions optimized by response surface methodology (RSM), and its effects on cell death, iNOS-induced COX-2 mediated pathway, inflammatory cytokine transcription, and the histopathological skin structure were analyzed in 2,4-dinitrochlorobenzene (DNCB)-treated BALB/c mice after treatment with AA for 4 weeks. AA was isolated and purified through isomerization and reaction-crystallization under the condition (HCl, 2.49 mL; reflux extraction time, 61.7 min; ethanolamine, 7.35 mL) established by RSM, resulting in AA with a purity and extraction yield of 99.33% and 58.61%, respectively. AA exhibited high scavenging activity against DPPH, ABTS, and NO radicals as well as hyaluronidase activity in a dose-dependent manner. The anti-inflammatory effects of AA were verified in lipopolysaccharide (LPS)-stimulated RAW264.7 macrophages through amelioration of the inflammatory response, including NO production, iNOS-induced COX-2 mediated pathway activation, and cytokine transcription. In the DNCB-treated AD model, the skin phenotypes, dermatitis score, immune organ weight, and IgE concentration were significantly ameliorated in the AA cream (AAC)-spread groups compared to the vehicle-spread group. In addition, AAC spread ameliorated DNCB-induced deterioration of skin histopathological structure through the recovery of the thickness of the dermis and epidermis and the number of mast cells. Furthermore, activation of the iNOS-induced COX-2 mediated pathway and increased inflammatory cytokine transcription were ameliorated in the skin of the DNCB+AAC-treated group. Taken together, these results indicate that AA, newly isolated from rosin, exhibits anti-AD effects in DNCB-treated AD models, and has the potential to be developed as a treatment option for AD-related diseases.

Abstract
Background The oral administration of polystyrene-microplastics (PS-MPs) causes chronic constipation of ICR mice, but there are no reports on their effects on the inflammatory response in the colon. To determine if the oral administration of MPs causes inflammation in the colon, the changes in the apoptosis-associated speck like protein containing a caspase recruitment domain (ASC)-inflammasome pathway, nuclear factor kappa-light-chain-enhancer of activated B cells (NF-κB) signaling pathway, and inflammatory cytokine expression were evaluated in the mid colon of ICR mice treated with 0.5 μm size PS-MPs for two weeks. Results The thicknesses of the mucosa, muscle, flat luminal surface, and crypt layer were decreased significantly (p < 0.01) in the mid colon of the MPs treated group compared to the Vehicle treated group. On the other hand, a remarkable increase in the expression levels of NOD-like receptor pyrin domain-containing protein (NLRP) 3, ASC, and Cleaved Caspase (Cas)-1 protein was observed in the MPs treated group. In addition, similar increasing pattern in the levels of p-NF-κB and phospho-inhibitory subunit of NF-κB (p-IkB) α protein was detected. Four inflammatory cytokines, including NF-κB, interleukin (IL)-6, tumor necrosis factor (TNF)-α, and IL-1β, showed an increased expression level after the MPs treatment. Conclusions Therefore, the present study suggests that PS-MPs can be a novel cause of an inflammatory response in the mid colon of ICR mice.

Abstract
To assess the in vivo impact of nanoplastics (NP) and coagulation-based purified NP (PurNP), this study analyzed for alterations in the biodistribution, toxicity and inflammatory response in ICR mice exposed to three different doses of NP (5, 25, and 50 mg/kg) and PurNP for 2 weeks. Except water consumption, which was dose-dependently and significantly increased in all NP-treated groups, most factors assessed for feeding behaviors and excretions remained constant, without any significant change. Orally administered NP was detected in the intestine, kidneys, and liver at all concentrations, although the accumulation was higher in the intestine than in the kidneys and liver. No significant alterations were detected in the levels of serum biochemical markers and histopathological structures. However, compared to the vehicle group, expressions of the inflammatory response proteins (iNOS and COX-2) and mRNA levels of the inflammatory cytokines were remarkably increased in the liver, kidneys, and intestine of NP-treated mice. A similar increase was detected in the oxidative stress responses, including ROS concentration, SOD activity, and Nrf2 expression. Furthermore, similar inflammatory responses were observed in the PurNP-treated group, as compared to the vehicle-treated group. The results presented in this study provide the first strong evidence that oral administration of NP for 2 weeks results in high accumulation in the liver, kidneys, and intestine of ICR mice, and induces severe inflammatory and oxidative stress responses. These results additionally confirm the efficacy of water purification using the tannic acid-mediated coagulation removal technique.

Abstract
The necessity of a simple measurement of platelet activation has been increasing in clinical medicine to regulate the proper dose of the antiplatelet drugs for patients having clinical outcomes in acute situations such as angina pectoris, stroke, or peripheral vascular disease or procedures involving angioplasty or coronary thrombolysis. We developed a self-signaling polydiacetylene (PDA) liposome microarray to detect activated platelets from whole blood samples in a single step. A specific antibody, 9F9 antibody, to platelet-bound fibrinogen was selected and conjugated to the PDA liposome microarray to quantify the fibrinogen-bound platelets. The developed PDA liposome-9F9 microarray generated an intense fluorescence signal when activated platelets in whole blood were introduced and also successfully distinguished the reduced platelet activation in the presence of Tirofiban, a model antiplatelet drug. The results of this single-step benchtop assay incorporates simple, sensitive, and rapid attributes that can detect the extent of platelet activation prior to needed clinical procedures.

Abstract
Marine mussels contain an abundant catechol moiety, 3,4-dihydroxyphenylalanine (DOPA), in their interfacial foot proteins. DOPA contributes to both surface adhesion and bridging between the surface and overhead proteins (surface priming) by taking advantage of the unique redox properties of catechol. Inspired by the mussel surface priming mechanism, herein we synthesized a series of DOPA-mimetic analogs - a bifunctional group molecule, consisting of a catechol group and an acrylic group at the opposite ends. The surface primers with differently substituted (-COOH, -CH3 ) alkyl chains in the middle spacer were synthesized. Time-dependent oxidation and redox potentials of the surface primers were studied in an oxidizing environment to gain a better understanding of the mussel's redox chemistry. The thickness and degree of priming of the surface primers on silicon-based substrates were analyzed by ellipsometry and UV/Vis absorption spectroscopy. The post-reactivity of the acrylic groups of the primed layer was first visualized through a reaction with an acrylic group-reactive dye.

Abstract
Microplastics are distributed in oceans worldwide, and the negative effects of microplastics on the environment and human health are increasing. Generally, three methods are employed to remove microplastics: filtration, biological degradation, and coagulation. Of these methods, filtration is the most commonly used but depends on the filter size or degree of microplastic coagulation. Although Fe- or Al-salts are generally used for coagulation via electrostatic interactions between metal ion and microplastics, their microplastic removal efficiency is less than 40%, and the smaller the size of microplastics, the lower is the removal efficiency. In order to improve the removal efficiency, metal-phenolic coordinate bonds were newly utilized for microplastic coagulation. Plant-derived tannic acid contributed to interfacial bridging between the microplastics and Fe3+. Using 0.5 μm polystyrene beads as model microplastics, a removal efficiency of more than 90% within 5 min was achieved. Since microplastics mostly accumulate in the gut of animals, rat intestine IEC18 cells exposed to purified water from the microbead suspension were risk assessed, revealing that water purified using the coagulation-based method reduced oxidative stress and inflammatory cytokines to levels similar to those in cells exposed to water without microbeads.

Abstract
Background Evidence about the impact of marital status before hematopoietic cell transplantation (hct) on outcomes after hct is conflicting. Methods We identified patients 40 years of age and older within the Center for International Blood and Marrow Transplant Research registry who underwent hct between January 2008 and December 2015. Marital status before hct was declared as one of: married or living with a partner, single (never married), separated or divorced, and widowed. We performed a multivariable analysis to determine the association of marital status with outcomes after hct. Results We identified 10,226 allogeneic and 5714 autologous hct cases with, respectively, a median follow-up of 37 months (range: 1-102 months) and 40 months (range: 1-106 months). No association between marital status and overall survival was observed in either the allogeneic (p = 0.58) or autologous (p = 0.17) setting. However, marital status was associated with grades 2-4 acute graft-versus-host disease (gvhd), p < 0.001, and chronic gvhd, p = 0.04. The risk of grades 2-4 acute gvhd was increased in separated compared with married patients [hazard ratio (hr): 1.13; 95% confidence interval (ci): 1.03 to 1.24], and single patients had a reduced risk of grades 2-4 acute gvhd (hr: 0.87; 95% ci: 0.77 to 0.98). The risk of chronic gvhd was lower in widowed compared with married patients (hr: 0.82; 95% ci: 0.67 to 0.99). Conclusions Overall survival after hct is not influenced by marital status, but associations were evident between marital status and grades 2-4 acute and chronic gvhd. To better appreciate the effects of marital status and social support, future research should consider using validated scales to measure social support and patient and caregiver reports of caregiver commitment, and to assess health-related quality of life together with health care utilization.

Abstract
Patch-type hydrogel electrodes have received increasing attention in biomedical applications due to their high biocompatibility and conformal adherence. However, their poor mechanical properties and non-uniform electrical performance in a large area of the hydrogel electrode should be improved for use in wearable devices for biosignal monitoring. Here, we developed self-adherent, biocompatible hydrogel electrodes composed of biodegradable gelatin and conductive polymers for electrocardiography (ECG) measurement. After incorporating conductive poly(3,4-ethylenedioxythiophene):poly(4-styrenesulfonate) (PEDOT:PSS) into gelatin hydrogels crosslinked by natural crosslinkers (genipin), the mechanical properties and electrical conductivity of the hydrogel electrodes were improved and additionally optimized by adjusting the amounts of crosslinker and PEDOT:PSS, respectively. Furthermore, the effect of dimethyl sulfoxide, as a dopant, on the conductivity of hydrogels was investigated. The gelatin-based, conductive hydrogel patch displayed self-adherence to human skin with an adhesive strength of 0.85 N and achieved conformal contact with less skin irritation compared to conventional electrodes with a chemical adhesive layer. Eyelet-type hydrogel electrodes, which were compatible with conventional ECG measurement instruments, exhibited a comparable performance in 12-lead human ECG measurement with commercial ECG clinical electrodes (3M Red Dot). These self-adherent, biocompatible, gelatin-based hydrogel electrodes could be used for monitoring various biosignals, such as in electromyography and electroencephalography.

Abstract
Corrosion-protective surfaces are of the utmost relevance to ensure long-term stability and reliability of metals and alloys by limiting their interactions with corrosive species, such as water and ions. However, their practical applications are often limited either by the inability to repel low surface tension liquids such as oils and alcohols or by poor mechanical durability. Here, a superomniphobic surface is reported that can display very high contact angles for both high and low surface tension liquids as well as for concentrated acids and bases. Such extreme repellency allowed for approximately 20% of the corrosion rate compared to the conventional superhydrophobic corrosion protective coatings. Furthermore, the superomniphobic surface can autonomously repair mechanical damage at an elevated temperature (60 °C) within a short period of time (60 s), and the surface can restore its intrinsic corrosion protection performance. Such superomniphobic surfaces thus offer a wide range of potential applications, including pipelines, with sustainable corrosion protection and rust inhibitors for steel in reinforced concrete.

Abstract
Intercolloidal behaviors mediated by metal-ligand coordination have rarely been studied. In this work, such intercolloidal behaviors were demonstrated visibly using blue-colored polydiacetylene liposomes containing a phenolic lipid that acts as a binding ligand toward metal ions. The optimized liposomes were 150-200 nm in diameter and stable in aqueous solution. In incubation tests with various neocortical metal ions, iron(III) ions produced the most obvious colloidal aggregation of the liposomes. As the pH of the incubation medium was increased from acid to basic, stronger aggregation and increased precipitation behavior were observed. The phenolic lipid is believed to contribute to the interliposomal bridging interaction, and the pH dependence of the complexation between iron(III) and the phenolic lipid inserted in the liposomes were verified.

Abstract
Polydiacetylene-based nanoparticles have been developed as nanocarriers for various bio-applications. However, how nanocarriers enter the cell environment and affect cell viability has not yet been considerably explored. In this study, polydiacetylene-based nanoliposomes (nanosomes) were electrostatically complexed with rhodamine fluorophores. Based on real-time cell imaging and cell viability assessment, the most highly polymerized nanosomes were found to be less toxic to cells. Moreover, it was revealed that the rhodamine/polydiacetylene nanosome complex dissociates at cell environment, the polydiacetylene nanosome penetrates into cells, as suggested by the fluorescence observed in confocal microscopy images.

Abstract
Female sex steroid hormones, including estradiol (E2) and progesterone (P4), serve significant physiological roles in pregnancy. In particular, E2 and P4 influence placenta formation, maintain pregnancy and stimulate milk production. These hormones are produced by ovaries, adrenal glands and the placenta, of which the latter is a major endocrine organ during pregnancy. However, the mechanism of hormone production during pregnancy remains unclear. In the present study, the regulation of steroid hormones and steroidogenic enzymes was examined in human placenta according to gestational age. In human placental tissues, expression levels of steroidogenic enzymes were determined with reverse transcription‑quantitative polymerase chain reaction and western blotting. The mRNA and protein expression of CYP17A1, HSD17B3 and CYP19A1, which are associated with the synthesis of dehydroepiandrosterone (DHEA) and E2, was elevated at different gestational ages in human placenta. In addition, to evaluate the correlation between serum and placental‑produced hormones, steroid hormone levels, including pregnenolone (PG), DHEA, P4, testosterone (T) and E2, were examined in serum and placenta. Serum and placenta expression of DHEA and E2 increased with gestational age, whereas T and P4 were differently regulated in placenta and serum. To confirm the mechanism of steroidogenesis in vitro, placental BeWo cells were treated with E2 and P4, which are the most important hormones during pregnancy. The mRNA and protein expression of steroidogenic enzymes was significantly altered by E2 in vitro. These results demonstrated that concentration of steroid hormones was differently regulated by steroidogenic enzymes in the placenta depending on the type of the hormones, which may be critical to maintain pregnancy.

Abstract
Exogenous enzymes have been used to improve nutrient utilization in several species of livestock, particularly swine and poultry. In addition, improved immunological and metabolic traits have been reported in nonruminants. The objective of this study was to determine the effects of β-mannanase supplementation on milk yield and composition, and immunological and metabolic responses in lactating Holstein dairy cows. Two weeks after calving, 20 Holstein cows (10 multiparous and 10 primiparous) were blocked by parity and assigned to 1 of 2 diets for 182 d. All cows were housed in the same environment and fed the same basal diet. The basal diet of the treatment group was supplemented with β-mannanase (CTCBio Inc., Seoul, South Korea) at 0.1% of concentrate dry matter. No differences were detected between the control and enzyme supplement groups in milk yield parameters or milk composition. Supplementation of β-mannanase enzyme reduced blood haptoglobin levels in supplemented multiparous cows compared with controls. Furthermore, nonesterified fatty acid concentration levels tended to be lower in cows fed β-mannanase, regardless of parity. Neither immunoglobulin G nor milk somatic cell count was affected by β-mannanase supplementation, regardless of parity. The number of insemination services tended to be lower in cows fed diets supplemented with β-mannanase. Results from this study suggest that supplementation of β-mannanase exogenous enzyme could help to reduce instances of systemic inflammation and decrease fat mobilization in lactating Holstein cows. Multiparous cows are considered susceptible to acute infections and inflammation; thus, the enzyme had a greater effect in multiparous cows.

Abstract
Researches on spicatoside A (SpiA)-containing natural products suggest the possibility of SpiA as a potential laxative to alleviate chronic constipation. However, no studies have been conducted with single compound administration of SpiA. To verify the laxative effects and mechanism of action of SpiA on chronic constipation, we investigated alterations in the excretion parameters, histological structure, and cholinergic regulation of the enteric nerve in the colons of Institute of Cancer Research (ICR) mice with loperamide (Lop)-induced constipation after exposure to 20 mg/kg of SpiA. Decrease in the number, weight and water contents of stools in the Lop+Vehicle treated group significantly recovered after SpiA treatment, and alterations in the histological structure and transmission electron microscopy (TEM) images were improved in the Lop+SpiA treated group. Similar recovery effects were observed in the ability for mucin secretion and expression of the membrane water channel gene (aquaporin 8, AQP8). Furthermore, significant improvements were observed in the acetylcholinesterase (AChE) activity and acetylcholine receptors' (AChRs) downstream signaling pathway after treatment of SpiA. The levels of gastrointestinal (GI) hormones including cholecystokinin (CCK) and gastrin were also remarkably enhanced in the Lop+SpiA treated group as compared to the Lop+Vehicle treated group. The expression of receptor tyrosine kinase (C-kit) and protein gene product 9.5 (PGP9.5) in Cajal and neural cells, as well as the phosphorylation of myosin light chain (MLC) in smooth muscle cells, were recovered after SpiA exposure. Taken together, the results of the present study provide the first strong evidence that SpiA improves chronic constipation through muscarinic cholinergic regulation of the enteric nerve in a Lop-induced constipation ICR mice model.

Abstract
High precision measurements of the ground state hyperfine structure (HFS) of muonium is a stringent tool for testing bound-state quantum electrodynamics (QED) theory, determining fundamental constants of the muon magnetic moment and mass, and searches for new physics. Muonium is the most suitable system to test QED because both theoretical and experimental values can be precisely determined. Previous measurements were performed decades ago at LAMPF with uncertainties mostly dominated by statistical errors. At the J-PARC Muon Science Facility (MUSE), the MuSEUM collaboration is planning complementary measurements of muonium HFS both at zero and high magnetic field. The new high-intensity muon beam that will soon be available at H-Line will provide an opportunity to improve the precision of these measurements by one order of magnitude. An overview of the different aspects of these new muonium HFS measurements, the current status of the preparation for high-field measurements, and the latest results at zero field are presented.

Abstract
PURPOSE Over the past several decades, many papers have been published about the usefulness of thyrotropin receptor antibodies (TRAbs) as biomarkers of Graves' ophthalmopathy (GO). However, results have been inconsistent. The purpose of this analysis is to determine a possible cause of these discrepancies and to examine the usefulness of TRAbs as biomarkers for GO, especially 'thyrotropin-binding inhibiting immunoglobulin (TBII)' and 'thyroid-stimulating antibody (TSAb)'. METHOD 26 articles discussing the association between TRAbs and GO were selected which were then divided into three groups based on the study method and whether or not the patients had been treated for hyperthyroidism. From the results of the papers reviewed, a provisional conclusion was made and a theoretical model on the TBII-TSAb coordinate plane was developed to confirm that conclusion. RESULTS TSAb is reported to be significantly or strongly associated with GO in the studies of pre- and post-treated patients for hyperthyroidism. TBII is positively correlated, negatively correlated or uncorrelated with GO in studies of pre-treated patients. However, it is generally agreed upon that TBII and GO are closely correlated in studies of post-treated patients. CONCLUSION We conclude that the level of TBII may not be a reliable indicator of the current state of GO in pre-treated patients. Whereas, in post-treated patients, due to changes in the correlation between TBII and TSAb due to the effect of hyperthyroidism treatment, the level of TBII can be a more reliable indicator of GO. Furthermore, the current level of TBII is closely associated with the onset and severity of GO in the future and it can be a valid predictor of GO. However, the TSAb level appears to be more reliable.
