Assessment of the environmental kuznets curve within EU-27: Steps toward environmental sustainability (1990-2019)

Reducing environmental pollution is a critical goal in global environmental economics and economic development. The European Union (EU) faces environmental challenges due to its development activities. Here we present a comprehensive approach to assess the impact of carbon dioxide (CO2) emissions, energy consumption (EC), population structure (POP), economy (GDP), and policies on the environment within the EU using the environmental Kuznets curve (EKC). Our research reveals that between 1990 and 2019, the EU-27 experienced an increase of +1.18 million tonnes of oil equivalent (Mtoe) per year in energy consumption (p < 0.05), while CO2 emissions decreased by 24.25 million tonnes (Mt) per year (p < 0.05). The highest reduction in CO2 emissions occurred in Germany (-7.52 Mt CO2 annually), and the lowest in Latvia (-0.087 Mt CO2 annually). The empirical EKC analysis shows an inverted-U shaped relationship between GDP and CO2 emissions in the EU-27. Specifically, a 1% increase in GDP results in a 0.705% increase in carbon emission, while a 1% increase in GDP2 leads to a 0.062% reduction in environmental pollution in the long run (p < 0.01). These findings indicate that economic development within the EU has reached a stage where economic growth positively impacts the environment. Overall, this study provides insights into the effectiveness of environmental policies in mitigating degradation and promoting green growth in the EU 27 countries.

Smaller is better? Unduly nice accuracy assessments in roof detection using remote sensing data with machine learning and k-fold cross-validation

Deriving the thematic accuracy of models is a fundamental part of image classification analyses. K-fold cross-validation (KCV), as an accuracy assessment technique, can be biased because existing built-in algorithms of software solutions do not handle the high autocorrelation of remotely sensed images, leading to overestimation of accuracies. We aimed to quantify the magnitude of the overestimation of KCV-based accuracies and propose a method to overcome this problem with the example of rooftops using a WorldView-2 (WV2) satellite image, and two orthophotos. Random split to training/testing subsets, independent testing and different types of repeated KCV sampling strategies were used to generate input datasets for classification. Results revealed that applying the random splitting of reference data to training/testing subsets and KCV methods had significantly biased the accuracies by up to 17%; overall accuracies (OAs) can incorrectly reach >99%. We found that repeated KCV can provide similar results to independent testing when spatial sampling is applied with a sufficiently large distance threshold (in our case 10 m). Coarser resolution of WV2 ensured more reliable results (up to a 5-9% increase in OA) than orthophotos. Object-based pixel purity of buildings showed that when using a majority filter for at least of 50% of objects the final accuracy approached 100% with each sampling method. The final conclusion is that KCV-based modelling ensures better accuracy than single models (with better pixel purity on the object level), but the accuracy metrics without spatially filtered sampling are not reliable.

Tree species composition mapping with dimension reduction and post-classification using very high-resolution hyperspectral imaging

Tree species' composition of forests is essential in forest management and nature conservation. We aimed to identify the tree species structure of a floodplain forest area using a hyperspectral image. We proposed an efficient novel strategy including the testing of three dimension reduction (DR) methods: Principal Component Analysis, Minimum Noise Fraction (MNF) and Indipendent Component Analysis with five machine learning (ML) algorithms (Maximum Likelihood Classifier, Support Vector Classification, Support Vector Machine, Random Forest and Artificial Neural Network) to find the most accurate outcome; altogether 300 models were calculated. Post-classification was applied by combining the multiresolution segmentation and filtering. MNF was the most efficient DR technique, and at least 7 components were needed to gain an overall accuracy (OA) of > 75%. Forty-five models had > 80% OAs; MNF was 43, and the Maximum Likelihood was 19 times among these models. Best classification belonged to MNF with 10 components and Maximum Likelihood classifier with the OA of 83.3%. Post-classification increased the OA to 86.1%. We quantified the differences among the possible DR and ML methods, and found that even > 10% worse model can be found using popular standard procedures related to the best results. Our workflow calls the attention of careful model selection to gain accurate maps.

Usefulness of Tree Species as Urban Health Indicators

We used the Air Pollution Tolerance Index (APTI), the amount of PM₅ and PM₁₀, and the elemental analysis of leaves to explore the sensitivity of tree species to air pollution. We assessed the tolerance of Robinia pseudoacacia, Acer saccharinum, Tilia × europaea, Acer platanoides, Fraxinus excelsior, Betula pendula, Celtis occidentalis, and Platanus × acerifolia to the amount of dust, APTI, and the elemental concentration of leaves. Leaves were collected in Debrecen (Hungary), which has a high intensity of vehicular traffic. The highest amount of PM (both PM₁₀ and PM₅) was found on the leaves of A. saccharinum and B. pendula. Our results demonstrated that A. saccharinum was moderately tolerant, while P. acerifolia was intermediate, based on the APTI value. There was a significant difference in the parameters of APTI and the elemental concentration of leaves among species. We found that tree leaves are reliable bioindicators of air pollution in urban areas. Based on the value of APTI, A. saccharinum and P. acerifolia, and based on PM, A. saccharinum and B. pendula are recommended as pollutant-accumulator species, while other studied species with lower APTI values are useful bioindicators of air pollution. The results support landscape engineers and urban developers in finding the best tree species that are tolerant to pollution and in using those as proxies of urban environmental health.

Dataset for multidimensional assessment to incentivise decentralised energy investments in Sub-Saharan Africa

In this data article, we present datasets from the construction of a composite indicator, the Photovoltaic Decentralised Energy Investment (PV-DEI) index, presented in detail in [1]. This article consists of a comprehensive energy-related data collected in practice from several sources, and from the outputs of the methodology described in [1]. The PV-DEI was designed and developed to measure the multidimensional factors that currently direct decentralised renewable energy investments. The PV-DEI index includes 52 indicators and was constructed because factors stimulating investment cannot be captured by a single indicator, e.g. competitiveness, affordability, or governance [1]. The PV-DEI index was built in alignment with a theoretical framework guided by an extensive review of the literature surrounding investment in decentralised Photovoltaic (PV), which led to the selection of its indicators. The structure of the PV-DEI was evaluated for its soundness using correlational assessments and principal component analyses (PCA). The raw data provided in this article can enable stakeholders to focus on specific country indicators, and how scores on these indicators contributed to a countries overall rank within the PV-DEI index. The data can be used to weight indicators depending on the specifications of several different stakeholders (such as NGOs, private sector or international institutions).

Temporal Patterns and Inter-Correlations among Physical and Antioxidant Attributes and Enzyme Activities of Apricot Fruit Inoculated with Monilinia laxa under Salicylic Acid and Methyl Jasmonate Treatments under Shelf-Life Conditions

Monilinia laxa causes serious postharvest damage on apricot fruits under shelf-life storage conditions. Plant elicitors of methyl jasmonate (MeJA) and salicylic acid (SA) can reduce this damage, and their research can explain the background of the plant defense physiological processes in M. laxa-infected fruits. The aims of this study were: (i) to evaluate the effect of various concentrations of MeJA and SA on brown rot incidence (BRI) and lesion diameter (LD) of apricot fruits; (ii) to measure the temporal patterns for the effect of 0.4 mmol L-1 MeJA and 2 mmol L-1 SA treatments on BRI, LD and seven fruit measures (fruit firmness (FF), lignin content (LC), total soluble phenol content (TSPC), total antioxidant capacity (TAC) and enzyme activities of PAL, POD and SOD) in treatments of M. laxa-inoculated versus (vs.) non-inoculated fruits over an eight-day shelf-life storage period; and (iii) to determine inter-correlations among the seven fruit measures for MeJA and SA treatments. Both MeJA and SA significantly reduced BRI and LD. LC, FF, TAC, TSPC, as well as SOD and PAL activities in the MeJA and SA treatments were higher than the water-treated control in most assessment days and both inoculation treatments. In both inoculation treatments, the activity of POD in the SA-treated fruits was higher than MeJA-treated and control fruits at all dates. In MeJA vs. SA and inoculated vs. non-inoculated treatments, six variable pairs (FF vs. TSPC, FF vs. TAC, TAC vs. PAL, PAL vs. POD, PAL vs. SOD, and POD vs. SOD) showed significant inter-correlation values. Principal component analyses explained 96% and 93% of the total variance for inoculated and non-inoculated treatments, respectively. In inoculated treatments, both PC1 and PC2 explained 41% of the total variance and correlated with FF, TSPC and TAC and with PAL, SOD and POD, respectively. In non-inoculated treatments, PC1 and PC2 explained 49% and 44% of the total variance and correlated with LC, PAL, POD and SOD and with FF, TSPC and TAC, respectively. It can be concluded that MeJA and SA are useful in the practice to enhance the plant defense system against brown rot by reducing fungal growth and by improving physical and antioxidant attributes (FF, LC, TAC and TSPC) and the activity of defense-related enzymes (PAL, POD and SOD) in apricot fruits during shelf-life storage conditions.

Assessing the WEPP model performance for predicting daily runoff in three terrestrial ecosystems in western Syria

Soil erosion is one of the main threats facing the agriculture and natural resources sector all over the world, and the same is true for Syria. Several empirical and physically based tools have been proposed to assess erosion induced soil losses and runoff driving the processes, from plot to regional spatial scales. The main goal of this research is to evaluate the performance of the Water Erosion Prediction Project (WEPP) model in predicting runoff in comparison with field experiments in the Al-Sabahia region of Western Syria in three ecosystems: agricultural lands (AG), burned forest (BF) and forest (FO). To achieve this, field experimental plots (2∗1.65∗0.5 m) were prepared to obtain runoff observation data between September 2012 and December 2013. In addition, the input data (atmospheric forcing, soil, slope, land management) were prepared to run the WEPP model to estimate the runoff. The results indicate that the average observed runoffs in the AG, BF and FO were 12.54 ± 1.17, 4.81 ± 0.97 and 1.72 ± 0.16 mm/event, respectively, while the simulated runoffs in the AG, BF and FO were 15.15 ± 0.89, 9.23 ± 1.48 and 2.61 ± 0.47mm/event, respectively. The statistical evaluation of the model's performance showed an unsatisfactory performance of the WEPP model for predicting the run-offs in the study area. This may be caused by the structural flaws in the model, and/or the insufficient site-specific input parameters. So, to achieve good performance and reliable results of the WEPP model, more observation data is required from different ecosystems in Syria. These findings can provide guidance to planners and environmental engineers for proposing environmental protection and water resources management plans in the Coastal Region in Syria.

Use of Leaves as Bioindicator to Assess Air Pollution Based on Composite Proxy Measure (APTI), Dust Amount and Elemental Concentration of Metals

Monitoring air pollution and environmental health are crucial to ensure viable cities. We assessed the usefulness of the Air Pollution Tolerance Index (APTI) as a composite index of environmental health. Fine and coarse dust amount and elemental concentrations of Celtis occidentalis and Tilia × europaea leaves were measured in June and September at three sampling sites (urban, industrial, and rural) in Debrecen city (Hungary) to assess the usefulness of APTI. The correlation between APTI values and dust amount and elemental concentrations was also studied. Fine dust, total chlorophyll, and elemental concentrations were the most sensitive indicators of pollution. Based on the high chlorophyll and low elemental concentration of tree leaves, the rural site was the least disturbed by anthropogenic activities, as expected. We demonstrated that fine and coarse dust amount and elemental concentrations of urban tree leaves are especially useful for urban air quality monitoring. Correlations between APTI and other measured parameters were also found. Both C. occidentalis and T. europaea were sensitive to air pollution based on their APTI values. Thus, the APTI of tree leaves is an especially useful proxy measure of air pollution, as well as environmental health.

Pollution Assessment Based on Element Concentration of Tree Leaves and Topsoil in Ayutthaya Province, Thailand

Atmospheric aerosol particles containing heavy metal contaminants deposit on the surface of plant leaves and the topsoil. Our aim was to reveal the pollution along an industrial–urban–rural gradient (IURG) in the central provinces of Thailand. Leaf samples from Ficus religiosa and Mimusops elengi were collected along with topsoil samples under the selected trees. Al, Ba, Ca, Cr, Cu, Fe, K, Mg, Mn, Na, Ni, Pb, and Zn concentrations were determined by ICP-OES in soil and plant samples. Soils were not polluted according to the critical value; furthermore, the elemental composition did not differ among the sampling sites of the IURG. The rural site was also polluted due to heavy amounts of untreated wastewater of the adjacent Chao Phraya River. Bioaccumulation factors of Ba, Cu, and Mn was higher than 1, suggesting active accumulation of these elements in plant tissue. Our findings proved that the deposition of air pollutants and the resistance to air pollutants in the case of plant leaves were different and that humus materials of the soils had relevant role in bioaccumulation of Al, Ba, and Cu. At the same time, the geochemical background, the source of pollution, and the local plant species greatly influence the metal content of any given environmental compartment.

Sequential Presentation Protects Working Memory From Catastrophic Interference

Neural network models of memory are notorious for catastrophic interference: Old items are forgotten as new items are memorized (French, 1999; McCloskey & Cohen, 1989). While working memory (WM) in human adults shows severe capacity limitations, these capacity limitations do not reflect neural network style catastrophic interference. However, our ability to quickly apprehend the numerosity of small sets of objects (i.e., subitizing) does show catastrophic capacity limitations, and this subitizing capacity and WM might reflect a common capacity. Accordingly, computational investigations (Knops, Piazza, Sengupta, Eger & Melcher, 2014; Sengupta, Surampudi & Melcher, 2014) suggest that mutual inhibition among neurons can explain both kinds of capacity limitations as well as why our ability to estimate the numerosity of larger sets is limited according to a Weber ratio signature. Based on simulations with a saliency map-like network and mathematical proofs, we provide three results. First, mutual inhibition among neurons leads to catastrophic interference when items are presented simultaneously. The network can remember a limited number of items, but when more items are presented, the network forgets all of them. Second, if memory items are presented sequentially rather than simultaneously, the network remembers the most recent items rather than forgetting all of them. Hence, the tendency in WM tasks to sequentially attend even to simultaneously presented items might not only reflect attentional limitations, but also an adaptive strategy to avoid catastrophic interference. Third, the mean activation level in the network can be used to estimate the number of items in small sets, but it does not accurately reflect the number of items in larger sets. Rather, we suggest that the Weber ratio signature of large number discrimination emerges naturally from the interaction between the limited precision of a numeric estimation system and a multiplicative gain control mechanism.

Aerial Laser Scanning Data as a Source of Terrain Modeling in a Fluvial Environment: Biasing Factors of Terrain Height Accuracy

Airborne light detection and ranging (LiDAR) scanning is a commonly used technology for representing the topographic terrain. As LiDAR point clouds include all surface features present in the terrain, one of the key elements for generating a digital terrain model (DTM) is the separation of the ground points. In this study, we intended to reveal the efficiency of different denoising approaches and an easy-to-use ground point classification technique in a floodplain with fluvial forms. We analyzed a point cloud from the perspective of the efficiency of noise reduction, parametrizing a ground point classifier (cloth simulation filter, CSF), interpolation methods and resolutions. Noise filtering resulted a wide range of point numbers in the models, and the number of points had moderate correlation with the mean accuracies (r = −0.65, p < 0.05), indicating that greater numbers of points had larger errors. The smallest differences belonged to the neighborhood-based noise filtering and the larger cloth size (5) and the smaller threshold value (0.2). The most accurate model was generated with the natural neighbor interpolation with the cloth size of 5 and the threshold of 0.2. These results can serve as a guide for researchers using point clouds when considering the steps of data preparation, classification, or interpolation in a flat terrain.

Detailed assessment of spatial and temporal variations in river channel changes and meander evolution as a preliminary work for effective floodplain management. The example of Sajó River, Hungary

The quasi-natural meandering type of alluvial rivers is quite unusual in Central European watersheds. The lack of extensive regulation allows such rivers to shift along their floodplain and cause erosion of natural and agricultural lands. Description of channel morphometric parameters over decadal timescales allows a better understanding of such river systems like Sajó River (Slovakia-Hungary) where no preliminary work is available regarding channel dynamics. In addition, to just describing the geomorphic processes, the environmental management implications of these meandering rivers need to be investigated as well. Thus, this study represents a bend-scale morphological analysis on the 124 km long section of the Sajó River in the Hungarian territory in eight different periods between 1952 and 2011. Archive aerial imagery, orthophotographs and topographical maps were organized into a database, then GIS-based analyses were performed to quantify the rate and extent of channel shifts, bend development and the area of erosion/accretion. On the bend scale, we have calculated several morphometric parameters (bend length, chord, amplitude, the radius of curvature) to quantify the evolutionary trajectory of reaches. Hydrological time series data were evaluated to reveal its possible role in the processes. Based on the available GIS-data of natural elements and anthropogenic intervention, we delineated 12 different reaches showing similar characteristics, from which six reaches were defined as natural. According to the morphometric parameters of the natural reaches, channel widths became narrower and the planform became more concentrated spatially in most of the reaches while the overall sinuosity of almost all natural reaches increased. Although artificial cutoffs mainly reduced the reach complexity, in some cases, they have accelerated the bend development downstream in the following few years. Erosion and accretion activity were higher in the periods when the discharge was higher than the effective discharge but its effect became less apparent in the second half of the investigated time period. By 1980, major artificial cutoffs and bank protection works were carried out that could have an impact in reducing the potential channel shifting. Based on our results, we propose a possible preservation and some modifications along the Hungarian part of the Sajó River reaches to be carried out by the local river management authorities. We conclude that this study provides a detailed demonstration of the Sajó River morphodymanics which can be used for further land planning to avoid harmful consequences of recent bank erosion processes not only along the Sajó River, but other similar rivers in Europe.

The ESC ACCA EAPCI EORP acute coronary syndrome ST-elevation myocardial infarction registry

Aims 

The Acute Cardiac Care Association (ACCA)–European Association of Percutaneous Coronary Intervention (EAPCI) Registry on ST-elevation myocardial infarction (STEMI) of the EurObservational programme (EORP) of the European Society of Cardiology (ESC) registry aimed to determine the current state of the use of reperfusion therapy in ESC member and ESC affiliated countries and the adherence to ESC STEMI guidelines in patients with STEMI.

Methods and results 

Between 1 January 2015 and 31 March 2018, a total of 11 462 patients admitted with an initial diagnosis of STEMI according to the 2012 ESC STEMI guidelines were enrolled. Individual patient data were collected across 196 centres and 29 countries. Among the centres, there were 136 percutaneous coronary intervention centres and 91 with cardiac surgery on-site. The majority of centres (129/196) were part of a STEMI network. The main objective of this study was to describe the demographic, clinical, and angiographic characteristics of patients with STEMI. Other objectives include to assess management patterns and in particular the current use of reperfusion therapies and to evaluate how recommendations of most recent STEMI European guidelines regarding reperfusion therapies and adjunctive pharmacological and non-pharmacological treatments are adopted in clinical practice and how their application can impact on patients’ outcomes. Patients will be followed for 1 year after admission.

Conclusion 

The ESC ACCA-EAPCI EORP ACS STEMI registry is an international registry of care and outcomes of patients hospitalized with STEMI. It will provide insights into the contemporary patient profile, management patterns, and 1-year outcome of patients with STEMI.

Dataset for landscape pattern analysis from a climatic perspective

Revealing the driving forces of changes in landscape pattern is a key question of landscape ecology and landscape analysis. Temperature and precipitation as climatic variables have a dominant role in triggering vegetation changes; thus, a database, which contain their interaction, can support the understanding of spatio-temporal changes in vegetation patterns even on a large scale. The dataset provided in this article contain the R-squared values of bivariate linear regression analysis between the Normalized Difference Vegetation Index (target variable; as a general quantitative descriptor of surface greenness) of the TERRA satellite's MODIS sensor and the climatic variables of the CarpatClim database (predictor variables; maximum monthly temperature, aridification index, evapotranspiration and precipitation). Environmental variables are also included to support further analysis: terrain height, macro regions, land cover classes. The dataset has a spatial projection (i.e. maps) and covers the area of Hungary. Tabular version provides the possibility of traditional statistical analysis, while maps allow the investigation to involve the spatial characteristics of absolute and relative position of the data points. This data article is related to the paper "NDVI dynamics as reflected in climatic variables: spatial and temporal trends - a case study of Hungary" (Szabo et al., 2019).

Effects of aerobic workout on the changes in the characteristics of dynamics of the center of gravity in different age categories

INTRODUCTION

The quality and function of movements undergo deterioration due to weight gain. Aerobic training normalizes body weight, improves the health status, and in addition, it is expected to improve the dynamics of movements. The aims of this study were to prove the beneficial effects of recreational physical activities on the movements.

METHODS

Participants were divided into five different age categories: second childhood, adolescence, mature age I, mature age II, and aging. Squatting and vertical jumping of the participants were measured at the beginning and at the end of a 5-month training program. These movements simulated ordinary daily movements. Changes in the body were determined by InBody230. APAS 3D system was used for movement analysis.

RESULTS

The results showed significant improvements in body weight, fat mass, muscle mass, fat mass-body weight ratio, muscle mass-body weight ratio, body mass index, body fat percentage, and waist-hip ratio. During jumping, the lifting and sinking of the center of gravity's (CG) position and its velocity and acceleration were improved. In case of squatting, the results showed significant improvements in the velocity and acceleration of dynamical characteristics of the CG. Other correlations were observed between changes in body composition and the dynamics of movements.

DISCUSSION

The research proved that recreational training optimized body composition and improved the characteristics of CG's dynamics. The study suggests considerable connection between body composition and the characteristics of the movements' dynamics. From this point of view, our training program was the most effective in the working age groups.

A novel type of semi-active jet turbulence grid

This article describes a novel approach to generate increased turbulence levels in an incoming flow. It relies on a cost-effective and robust semi-active jet grid, equipped with flexible tubes as moving elements attached onto tube connections placed at the intersections of a fixed, regular grid. For the present study, these flexible tubes are oriented in counter-flow direction in a wind tunnel. Tube motion is governed by multiple interactions between the main flow and the jets exiting the tubes, resulting in chaotic velocity fluctuations and high turbulence intensities in the test section. After describing the structure of the turbulence generator, the turbulent properties of the airflow downstream of the grid in both passive and active modes are measured by hot-wire anemometry and compared with one another. When activating the turbulence generator, turbulence intensity, turbulent kinetic energy, and the Taylor Reynolds number are noticeably increased in comparison with the passive mode (corresponding to simple grid turbulence). Furthermore, the inertial subrange of the turbulent energy spectrum becomes wider and closely follows Kolmogorov's -5/3 law. These results show that the semi-active grid, in contrast to passive systems, is capable of producing high turbulence levels, even at low incoming flow velocity. Compared to alternatives based on actuators driven by servo-motors, the production and operation costs of the semi-active grid are very moderate and its robustness is much higher.

Phenotypic plasticity as a clue for invasion success of the submerged aquatic plant Elodea nuttallii

Two closely related alien submerged aquatic plants were introduced into Europe. The new invader (Elodea nuttallii) gradually displaced E. canadensis even at sites where the latter was well established. The aim of the study was to evaluate the combined effects of environmental factors on several phenotypic characteristics of the two Elodea species, and to relate these phenotypic characteristics to the invasion success of E. nuttallii over E. canadensis. In a factorial design, Elodea plants were grown in aquaria containing five different nitrogen concentrations and incubated at five different light intensities. We used six functional traits (apical shoot RGR), total shoot RGR, relative elongation, root length, lateral spread, branching degree) to measure the environmental response of the species. We calculated plasticity indices to express the phenotypic differences between species. Light and nitrogen jointly triggered the development of phenotypic characteristics that make E. nuttallii a more successful invader in eutrophic waters than E. canadensis. The stronger invader showed a wider range of phenotypic plasticity. The apical elongation was the main difference between the two species, with E. nuttallii being more than two times longer than E. canadensis. E. canadensis formed dense side shoots even under high shade and low nitrogen levels, whereas E. nuttallii required higher light and nitrogen levels. We found that under more eutrophic conditions, E. nuttallii reach the water surface sooner than E. canadensis and through intensive branching outcompetes all other plants including E. canadensis. Our findings support the theory that more successful invaders have wider phenotypic plasticity.

Establishment of Fascioloides magna in a new region of Hungary: case report

During the monitoring of red deer (N = 124) and fallow deer (N = 13) populations in four neighbouring areas, the presence of Fascioloides magna was confirmed in southwestern Hungary. The prevalence and the mean intensity of the infection within the host populations ranged between 0 and 100% and 0-36.3, respectively. The determined prevalences are similar to that observed earlier in other European natural foci. The authors hypothesise that the appearance of F. magna in this region should have been a partly natural- and partly human-influenced process.

[Colon reconstruction after the Hartmann procedure. Laparoscopy or laparotomy?]

The Hartmann procedure - primarily - was introduced for the treatment of cancerous diseases of sigmoid colon and rectum. In the last few years it was performed in cases with complicated inflammation of the left colon, colon cancers with bowel obstruction or perforation, or in the case of insufficiency of the anastomoses, or in urgent operations after traumatics bowel injuries, when making the anastomosis is at very high risk. Later on the restoration of the continuity of the GI tract can be done traditionally (by laparotomy) or laparoscopically. We present our experiences with the above technique, and also compare our results with traditional open surgeries in our patients.

Interference and memory capacity limitations

Working memory (WM) is thought to have a fixed and limited capacity. However, the origins of these capacity limitations are debated, and generally attributed to active, attentional processes. Here, we show that the existence of interference among items in memory mathematically guarantees fixed and limited capacity limits under very general conditions, irrespective of any processing assumptions. Assuming that interference (a) increases with the number of interfering items and (b) brings memory performance to chance levels for large numbers of interfering items, capacity limits are a simple function of the relative influence of memorization and interference. In contrast, we show that time-based memory limitations do not lead to fixed memory capacity limitations that are independent of the timing properties of an experiment. We show that interference can mimic both slot-like and continuous resource-like memory limitations, suggesting that these types of memory performance might not be as different as commonly believed. We speculate that slot-like WM limitations might arise from crowding-like phenomena in memory when participants have to retrieve items. Further, based on earlier research on parallel attention and enumeration, we suggest that crowding-like phenomena might be a common reason for the 3 major cognitive capacity limitations. Specific features of NDVI, NDWI and MNDWI as reflected in land cover categories

The remote sensing techniques provide a great possibility to analyze the environmental processes inlocal or global scale. Landsat images with their 30 m resolution are suitable among others for landcover mapping and change monitoring. In this study three spectral indices (NDVI, NDWI, MNDWI) wereinvestigated from the aspect of land cover types: water body (W); plough land (PL); forest (F); vineyard(V); grassland (GL) and built-up areas (BU) using Landsat-7 ETM+ data. The range, the dissimilaritiesand the correlation of spectral indices were examined. In BU – GL – F categories similar NDVI valueswere calculated, but the other land cover types differed significantly. The water related indices (NDWI,MNDWI) were more effective (especially the MNDWI) to enhance water features, but the values of othercategories ranged from narrower interval. Weak correlation were found among the indices due to thedifferences caused by the water land cover class. Statistically, most land cover types differed from eachother, but in several cases similarities can be found when delineating vegetation with various watercontent. MNDWI was found as the most effective in highlighting water bodies.

[Isolated aspartate aminotransferase elevation in a young, healthy person. Case report]

The authors present diagnostic methods used in a young healthy person who had isolated aspartate aminotransferase elevation. Polyethylene glycol precipitation test, aspartate aminotransferase serum electrophoresis and immunofixation were performed for measuring the macro-aspartate aminotransferase. It was found that aspartate aminotransferase activity in the patient was almost completely eliminated after precipitation of immunoglobulins with polyethylene glycol. In addition, aspartate aminotransferase migrated in the control samples to the anode while in the patient towards the cathode. Finally, a wider and more intense staining band was visible in the region of immunoglobulin A in the patient sample on the immunofixation gel as compared to the control sample. The authors conclude that that increased aspartate aminotransferase activity was due to macro formation. The elevated level of immunoglobulin A and selective increase of polyclonal immunoglobulin A (κ and λ light chains) indicated that the macro format was created by immunoglobulin A bound to aspartate aminotransferase.

Effect of sevoflurane on cerebral blood flow and cerebrovascular resistance at surgical level of anaesthesia: a transcranial Doppler study

BACKGROUND AND OBJECTIVE

It is widely accepted that sevoflurane affects cerebral circulation, but there are uncertainities regarding the magnitude of its effect. The aim of the present work was to assess the effect of sevoflurane on the cerebral circulation at surgical levels of anaesthesia.

METHODS

Twenty patients undergoing elective lumbar discectomies were investigated. Anaesthesia was induced with propofol and maintained with sevoflurane. The level of surgical anaesthesia was determined by bispectral index, the target level was 45-55. Transcranial Doppler (TCD) measurement was performed before induction and after reaching the surgical level of anaesthesia. Besides routine parameters (middle cerebral artery mean blood flow velocity (MCAV) and pulsatility index (PI)) derived parameters (estimated cerebral perfusion pressure (eCPP), cerebral blood flow index (CBFI) and resistance area product (RAP)) were calculated by taking changes of mean arterial pressure also into account.

RESULTS

MCAV decreased from 54.1 +/- 13.3 to 43.7 +/- 18.5 cm s-1, P < 0.01 and PI increased from 0.79 +/- 0.2 to 0.92 +/- 0.2, P < 0.01 after reaching the surgical level of anaesthesia. As a result eCPP decreased by 18.2%, CBFI by 25.5% and RAP increased by 15% respectively.

CONCLUSIONS

Our data indicate a vasodilatory effect of sevoflurane at surgical level of anaesthesia on large cerebral vessels or a vasoconstriction of the resistance arterioles likely caused by decreased brain metabolism.

[Subtotal colectomy in the course of gallstone-ileus surgery]

A big gallstone penetrating through a bilio-digestive fistula into the bowel can make a complete obstruction of it in the majority of the cases requiring an urgent operation. It is a rare situation that a fistula like this leads into the colon and the stone makes a large bowel obstruction. A 72-year-old male patient was admitted to our department with the symptoms of colon obstruction. After the examinations he underwent an explorative laparotomy. During the course of the operation an obstruction was found in the proximal third of the descending colon. A subtotal colectomy was carried out. At the opening of the resected colon a big gallstone was found as the cause of the obstruction, which simulated a tumorous obstruction. We present through this case the possibilities and results of the diagnosis and treatment of gallstone ileus. We conclude that in the prevention of gallstone ileus, the early operative treatment of detected gallstone is essential.

[Skin closure in inguinal hernia repair with rapidly absorbing Polyglactin 910/370 (Vicryl-Rapide) suture material]

OBJECTIVE

Results of fast absorbing Poliglactin 910/370 suture material were assessed in skin closure following invaginal hernia repairs.

METHODS

Fifty consecutive patients undergoing invaginal hernia repair were prospectively and randomly assigned in two groups. In Group I, wounds were closed with conventional absorbable subcutaneous Polyglactin 910 (VICRYL, ETHICON) and non absorbable cutaneous Monofilament Nylon (ETHILON, ETHICON) stitches. In Group II, running subcutaneous and intradermic irradiated Polyglactin 910/370 (VICRYL-Rapide, ETHICON) sutures were used. The time of skin closure, the price of the suture material, short and middle term cosmetic results, complications in wound healing and the subjective comfort of patients were noted.

RESULTS

The cost of skin closing was similar, while the need for further medical wistis was lower in the VICRYL-Rapide group. The wound healing process and it's cosmetic results were similar. Patients in Group II experienced less discomfort, due to the avoidance of suture removal.

CONCLUSION

The rapidly resorbing suture material (VICRYL-Rapide) is a cost effective choice for closing the skin of invaginal hernia repairs and probably of other clean operations.

Configuration and racemization determination of cysteine residues in peptides by chiral derivatization and HPLC: application to oxytocin peptides

An improved RP-HPLC method was developed for the determination of the configuration and stereochemical purity of cysteine residues in peptides. The method consists of oxidation of cysteine and cystine residues to cysteic acid, followed by hydrolysis and pre-column chiral derivatization with Val-Marfey's reagent.

Correlation between central somatosensory conduction time, blood flow velocity, and delayed cerebral ischemia after aneurysmal subarachnoid hemorrhage

In this retrospective study of 67 aneurysmal patients, the predictive role of central conduction time (CCT) on vasospasm occurrence evaluated by means of transcranial Doppler sonography (TCD) and the correlation of CCT to blood flow velocity measured simultaneously in postoperative course were studied. Data about the clinical state of patients at the time of admission (Hunt Hess scale), severity of subarachnoidal hemorrhage on initial CT scan (Fisher grade), timing of surgery (acute or delayed), outcome (Glasgow Outcome Scale), severity of vasospasm graded by highest mean blood flow velocity (BFV) during the entire clinical course and CCT values measured at admission (preoperatively), then postoperatively (one day after surgery) and simultaneously with later TCD investigations were collected from the files. Interhemispheric difference of CCT was also calculated. The results showed that CCT at admission was not predictive for vasospasm. CCT measured either at admission or on the first postoperative day did not differ significantly in the different grades of vasospasm. Similar results were obtained in the acute and in the late operated group of patients. The results also suggest that increased CCT and interhemispheric difference at the time of admission indicate a worse prognosis, but this can be related to higher surgical risk rather than to a higher incidence of late ischemic deterioration. Simultaneous CCT and TCD examinations demonstrated that coincident and statistically significant (p < 0.01) increase of actual CCT (6.7 msec) was found only in the severe grade of vasospasm (BFV 200 cm/s). The authors discuss the role of CCT and TCD monitoring in the management of aneurysmal subarachnoid hemorrhage.

[Acute gastrointestinal bleeding caused by a rare, benign tumor of the duodenum (gangliocytic paraganglioma)]

Diagnosis and treatment of massive gastrointestinal bleeding is sometimes very difficult problem in a surgical unit. Authors present a case of a 40 years old female with an atypical source of upper gastrointestinal bleeding. The origin of the bleeding was detected only by intraoperative enteroscopy. The source of the bleeding was a very rare benign tumour of the duodenum (Gangliocytic paraganglioma) which involved the papilla of Vater. During the operation resection of the pedunculated tumour was carried out, with choledochal--and Wirsungoplastyc, associated with external drainage of these ducts. According to the literature in preoperative diagnosis of this rare tumour endoscopy, angiography, and EUS are very useful. In case of malignancy, metastases radical operation-pancreatoduodenectomy--is indicated.

[Role of endogenous basic fibroblast growth factor in experimental duodenal ulcer]

Authors investigated the role of endogenous bFGF in the development of experimental duodenal ulcer induced by cysteamine. The changes in endogenous bFGF in duodenum were examined by immunohistochemical method in the early stages of ulceration. A significant decrease was found in the immunoreactivity of bFGF in rat duodenal mucosa 12 and 24 hr after the administration of the duodenal ulcerogen cysteamine. Thus, in addition to being a novel potent pharmacologic agent, bFGF may play a pathophysiologic role in ulcer pathogenesis and healing.

[The effect of thrombocyte-derived growth factor on experimental inflammatory bowel disease]

The role of Platelet-Derived Growth Factor (PDGF) was investigated in treatment of experimental inflammatory bowel disease (IBD) in animal models. A new model of IBD induced by the sulfhydryl (SH) alkylator iodoacetamide revealed that the most appropriate concentration of iodoacetamide is 6% given intracolonically once. Daily treatment with PDGF dose-dependently accelerated the healing of colonic erosions, ulcers and inflammation.

New 4-arylaminopiperidines with antihypoxic and anticonvulsive activity

Several new bioanalogues of (+/-)-N-methyl-N-(1-[3-(4-fluorophenoxy)-2-hydroxy-propyl]piperidin++ +-4-yl) benzothiazol-2-amine (1, sabeluzole, CAS 104383-17-7) were prepared by reacting 1,2-epoxy-3-aryloxypropanes with 4-arylaminopiperidines. Some of these derivatives showed enhanced activity in the potassium cyanide hypoxia test and in the pentetrazol convulsion test in mice compared to 1.
