Abstract
In vivo use of biodegradable magnesium (Mg) metal can be plagued by too rapid a degradation rate that removes metal support before physiological function is repaired. To advance the use of Mg biomedical implants, the degradation rate may need to be adjusted. We previously demonstrated that pure Mg filaments used in a nerve repair scaffold were compatible with regenerating peripheral nerve tissues, reduced inflammation, and improved axonal numbers across a short-but not long-gap in sciatic nerves in rats. To determine if the repair of longer gaps would be improved by a slower Mg degradation rate, we tested, in vitro and in vivo, the effects of Mg filament polishing followed by anodization using plasma electrolytic oxidation (PEO) with non-toxic electrolytes. Polishing removed oxidation products from the surface of as-received (unpolished) filaments, exposed more Mg on the surface, produced a smoother surface, slowed in vitro Mg degradation over four weeks after immersion in a physiological solution, and improved attachment of cultured epithelial cells. In vivo, treated Mg filaments were used to repair longer (15 mm) injury gaps in adult rat sciatic nerves after placement inside hollow poly (caprolactone) nerve conduits. The addition of single Mg or control titanium filaments was compared to empty conduits (negative control) and isografts (nerves from donor rats, positive control). After six weeks in vivo, live animal imaging with micro computed tomography (micro-CT) showed that Mg metal degradation rates were slowed by polishing vs. as-received Mg, but not by anodization, which introduced greater variability. After 14 weeks in vivo, functional return was seen only with isograft controls. However, within Mg filament groups, the amount of axonal growth across the injury site was improved with slower Mg degradation rates. Thus, anodization slowed degradation in vitro but not in vivo, and degradation rates do affect nerve regeneration.

Background
The COVID-19 pandemic has had a profound effect on healthcare delivery. Here we describe the effect of repurposing of a research Computed Tomography scanner on clinical care of cardiology patients in an urban academic medical centre which did not have routine access to CCTA prior to the pandemic.
Patients requiring invasive coronary angiography require transfer to a regional cardiac centre (no ICA available on site).
Purpose
We investigated the effect of CCTA on i) diagnostic certainty ii) avoidance of clinician defined unnecessary invasive angiography in hospitalised patients.
Methods
This was a prospective, longitudinal cohort study involving hospitalized patients admitted to an urban academic medical centre (catchment population 650 000) between March 29 and September 21, 2020. Routinely collected (usual care) data were gathered by clinicians who were members of the usual care medical team and ethics approval or explicit patient consent was not required. High-sensitivity Troponin-I was measured on admission and 3- and 6– hours after if mandated (Abbott Architect TnI assay).
A 320-detector scanner (Aquilon ONE, Canon) was used. Intravenous metoprolol was used where required to control the heart rate (target 60 b.p.m.) and sublingual glyceryl trinitrate will be given to all patients immediately before the scan acquisition.
Results
Forty-three patients underwent inpatient CCTA, mean age: 61 ± 13 years (range 30-88y), 54% female. The presenting complaint was typical chest pain in 28 (65%), atypical chest pain in 10 (23%), and a variety of symptoms in 5 (12%) including palpitations, syncope, breathlessness.
Thirty-six (84%) of patients had a detectable TnI above the 99% centile. Median(IQR) peak TnI was 127 (33-635)ng/L.
CCTA was carried out on average 1 day post request.
CCTA resulted in an improvement in clinician diagnostic certainty (Initial review: 21% yes, 79% probable, post-CCTA review: 84% yes, 16% probable) in providing a diagnosis.
21 (49%) of invasive coronary angiograms were avoided due to CCTA, whilst an inpatient invasive coronary angiogram (ICA) was performed in 4(9%) due to CCTA demonstrating significant disease, and in 2(%) the ICA was changed from out-patient to in-patient. Three ICA tests were requested as OP due to CCTA findings. CCTA did not overestimate disease severity in this cohort.
We saved 21 inter hospital transfers for ICA during this time period.
Using NHS England cost tariffs, a cost saving of >£36,000 was made for using CCTA instead of ICA in these 21 patients who would have required ICA.
Conclusion
Inpatient CCTA resulted in greater clinician diagnostic confidence, avoidance of unnecessary invasive angiograms and a significant cost saving. This also reduced the duration of patient stay, reducing the potential exposure of patients to COVID-19.

Abstract
Magnesium (Mg) metal is of great interest in biomedical applications, especially in tissue engineering. Mg exhibits excellent in vivo biocompatibility, biodegradability and, during degradation, releases Mg ions (Mg2+) with the potential to improve tissue repair. We used electrospinning technology to incorporate Mg particles into nanofibers. Various ratios of Mg metal microparticles (<44 µm diameter) were incorporated into nanofiber polycaprolactone (PCL) meshes. Physicochemical properties of the meshes were analyzed by scanning electron microscopy (SEM), Fourier-transform infrared spectroscopy (FTIR), mechanical tensile testing, X-ray diffractometry and UV-VIS spectrophotometry. Biological properties of meshes were evaluated in vitro and in vivo. Under mammalian cell culture conditions, Mg-containing meshes released hydrogen gas and relative amounts of free Mg2+ that reflected the Mg/PCL ratios. All meshes were non-cytotoxic for 3T3 fibroblasts and PC-12 pheochromocytoma cells. In vivo implantation under the skin of mice for 3, 8 and 28 days showed that Mg-containing meshes were well vascularized, with improved measures of inflammation and healing compared to meshes without Mg. Evidence included an earlier appearance and infiltration of tissue repairing macrophages and, after 28 days, evidence of more mature tissue remodeling. Thus, these new composite nanofiber meshes have promising material properties that mitigated inflammatory tissue responses to PCL alone and improved tissue healing, thus providing a suitable matrix for use in clinically relevant tissue engineering applications. STATEMENT OF SIGNIFICANCE: The biodegradable metal, magnesium, safely biodegrades in the body, releasing beneficial byproducts. To improve tissue delivery, magnesium metal particles were incorporated into electrospun nanofiber meshes composed of a biodegradable, biocompatible polymer, polycaprolactone (PCL). Magnesium addition, at several concentrations, did not alter PCL chemistry, but did alter physical properties. Under cell culture conditions, meshes released magnesium ions and hydrogen gas and were not cytotoxic for two cell types. After implantation in mice, the mesh with magnesium resulted in earlier appearance of M2-like, reparative macrophages and improved tissue healing versus mesh alone. This is in agreement with other studies showing beneficial effects of magnesium metal and provides a new type of scaffold material that will be useful in clinically relevant tissue engineering applications.

Abstract
Through the exploration of disease risk analysis methods employed for four different UK herpetofauna translocations, we illustrate how disease hazards can be identified, and how the risk of disease can be analysed. Where ecological or geographical barriers between source and destination sites exist, parasite populations are likely to differ in identity or strain between the two sites, elevating the risk from disease and increasing the number and category of hazards requiring analysis. Simplification of the translocation pathway through the avoidance of these barriers reduces the risk from disease. The disease risk analysis tool is intended to aid conservation practitioners in decision making relating to disease hazards prior to implementation of a translocation.

Abstract
Background Poly(butylcyanoacrylate) (PBCA) nanoparticles (NPs) loaded with doxorubicin (DOX) and coated with polysorbate 80 (PS80) have shown efficacy in the treatment of rat glioblastoma. However, cytotoxicity of this treatment remains unclear. Purpose The purpose of this study was to investigate cytotoxicity and apoptotic gene expression using a proven in vitro co-culture model of the blood-brain barrier. Methods The co-cultures were exposed to uncoated PBCA NPs, PBCA-PS80 NPs or PBCA-PS80-DOX NPs at varying concentrations and evaluated using a resazurin-based cytotoxicity assay and an 84-gene apoptosis RT-PCR array. Results The cytotoxicity assays showed PBCA-PS80-DOX NPs exhibited a decrease in metabolic function at lower concentrations than uncoated PBCA NPs and PBCA-PS80 NPs. The apoptosis arrays showed differential expression of 18 genes in PBCA-PS80-DOX treated cells compared to the untreated control. Discussion As expected, the cytotoxicity assays demonstrated enhanced dose-dependent toxicity in the DOX loaded NPs. The differentially expressed apoptotic genes participate in both the tumor necrosis factor receptor-1 and mitochondria-associated apoptotic pathways implicated in current DOX chemotherapeutic toxicity. Conclusion The following data suggest that the cytotoxic effect may be attributed to DOX and not the NPs themselves, further supporting the use of PBCA-PS80 NPs as an effective drug delivery vehicle for treating central nervous system conditions.

Abstract
Carbon nanotubes (CNTs) are considered the most promising candidates to replace Cu and Al in a large number of electrical, mechanical and thermal applications. Although most CNT industrial applications require macro and micro size CNT fiber assemblies, several techniques to make conducting CNT fibers, threads, yarns and ropes have been reported to this day, and improvement of their electrical and mechanical conductivity continues. Some electrical applications of these CNT conducting fibers require an insulating layer for electrical insulation and protection against mechanical tearing. Ideally, a flexible insulator such as hydrogenated nitrile butadiene rubber (HNBR) on the CNT fiber can allow fabrication of CNT coils that can be assembled into lightweight, corrosion resistant electrical motors and transformers. HNBR is a largely used commercial polymer that unlike other cable-coating polymers such as polyvinyl chloride (PVC), it provides unique continuous and uniform coating on the CNT fibers. The polymer coated/insulated CNT fibers have a 26.54 μm average diameter—which is approximately four times the diameter of a red blood cell—is produced by a simple dip-coating process. Our results confirm that HNBR in solution creates a few microns uniform insulation and mechanical protection over a CNT fiber that is used as the electrically conducting core.

Abstract
Biodegradable magnesium metal filaments placed inside biodegradable nerve conduits might provide the physical guidance support needed to improve the rate and extent of regeneration of peripheral nerves across injury gaps. In this study, we examined basic issues of magnesium metal resorption and biocompatibility by repairing sub-critical size gap injuries (6 mm) in one sciatic nerve of 24 adult male Lewis rats. Separated nerve stumps were connected with poly(caprolactone) nerve conduits, with and without magnesium filaments (0.25 mm diameter, 10 mm length), with two different conduit filler substances (saline and keratin hydrogel). At 6 weeks after implantation, magnesium degradation was examined by micro-computed tomography and histological analyses. Magnesium degradation was significantly greater when the conduits were filled with an acidic keratin hydrogel than with saline (p < 0.05). But magnesium filaments in some animals remained intact for 6 weeks. Using histological and immunocytochemical analyses, good biocompatibility of the magnesium implants was observed at 6 weeks, as shown by good development of regenerating nerve mini-fascicles and only mild inflammation in tissues even after complete degradation of the magnesium. Nerve regeneration was not interrupted by complete magnesium degradation. An initial functional evaluation, determination of size recovery of the gastrocnemius muscle, showed a slight improvement due to magnesium with the saline but not the keratin filler, compared with respective control conduits without magnesium. These results suggest that magnesium filament implants have the potential to improve repair of injured peripheral nerve defects in this rodent model.

Abstract
Increased neurogenesis in the hippocampus and subventricular zone (SVZ) of the brain of animals has been demonstrated following administration of several psychotropic medications. Such changes are thought to regenerate tissues and contribute to the beneficial effects of the medications. This study sought to determine if another neurogenic tissue, the peripheral olfactory epithelium (OE), might also exhibit changes after treatment with psychotropic medications. Young adult male rats were treated with risperidone and paliperidone, atypical antipsychotic medications; fluoxetine, a selective serotonin reuptake inhibitor (SSRI) antidepressant; and diluent control for 28days via drinking water. Bromodeoxyuridine (BrdU) was injected to label dividing cells and positive cells were quantified in the OE, cortical SVZ, and dentate gyrus (DG) of the hippocampus. In the first of two studies, paliperidone and risperidone treatment (at 1mg/kg/day) resulted in increased numbers over controls of BrdU positive cells in the OE. In the second study, examining OE, SVZ and DG in the same animal, paliperidone, but not risperidone or fluoxetine (0.6 mg/kg/day) resulted in increased cells in the OE and posterior SVZ. However, fluoxetine, but not paliperidone or risperidone treatment increased BrdU positive cells in the DG. These results show that psychotropic drug-induced cell proliferation occurs in the OE and parallels changes in the SVZ but not DG. Thus, the peripheral OE can serve as a proxy for certain psychotropic drug-induced actions on SVZ brain cell proliferation. This olfactory model can be employed in human research as a method to explore the neurogenesis effects of various pharmacologic treatments of neuropsychiatric disorders.

Abstract
INTRODUCTION The national abdominal aortic aneurysm (AAA) screening programme measures internal wall diameter; however, current UK intervention criteria use external wall diameter. Our aim was to determine the clinical significance of the difference between these two measurements. PATIENTS AND METHODS Fifty patients on an aneurysm surveillance programme were ultrasound scanned by two experienced vascular scientists, blinded to the other's results. Maximum anteroposterior internal wall and maximum anteroposterior external wall diameters were measured. RESULTS The median difference between internal and external diameter was 6 mm (IQR 6-7) for scientist 1 and 7 mm (IQR 5-8) for scientist 2. This was statistically significant (P < 0.0002). External wall diameter displayed less interobserver variability (3 mm vs 6 mm). CONCLUSIONS Screening measurements underestimate aneurysm size by 6 mm and display greater variability in comparison to external wall measurements. These findings should be understood to prevent a delay in the detection and treatment of AAAs.

Abstract
The purpose of this study was to identify changes due to whole body vibration in peroneus longus (PL) activation following ankle inversion perturbation. Participants were 22 (age 22.1 +/- 1.8 yrs, ht 168.8 +/- 8.2 cm, mass 65.5 +/- 11.2 kg) physically active male and female students with no recent history of lower extremity injury. Measurements of PL electromechanical delay (EMD), reaction time, and muscle activation were collected from two groups (WBV and control) over 3 time intervals (pretreatment, posttreatment, and 30 min posttreatment). Two-way ANOVAs were used to compare groups over time for all dependent variables. No group x time interactions were detected (p < 0.05) for any of the dependent variables. Whole body vibration did not alter PL EMD, reaction time, peak EMG, or average EMG. The use of WBV for enhancing ankle dynamic stability was not supported by this study. However, more data are needed to determine if WBV is an effective intervention in other areas of injury prevention or rehabilitation. These data were not consistent with the hypothesis that WBV enhances muscle spindle sensitivity.

Abstract
BACKGROUND Cardiovascular disease is an important cause of morbidity and mortality in South Africa. The Southern Africa Stroke Prevention Initiative (SASPI) found a high prevalence of stroke in the rural Agincourt subdistrict, Limpopo province. Hypertension is the commonest vascular risk factor in our population and it is essential that primary care services be adequately equipped to detect and treat hypertension. The aim of this study was to assess the number, accuracy and working condition of blood pressure measuring devices (BMD) in the clinics that serve the field site, and to assess the clinic sisters' perceptions of the availability of antihypertensive medication and aspirin. METHODS In each of the clinics serving the site we assessed the BMDs and cuffs using the following criteria: general condition, bladder size, state of rubber components, operation of the inlet valve and control of valve operation. The legibility of the gauge, level and condition of the mercury, and the condition of the glass tube were checked when relevant. The performance of the BMD was then assessed both with the cuff used in the clinic and with a new functioning cuff, against an accurate mercury sphygmomanometer. By interviewing the clinic sister we could assess the availability of antihypertensive medication and aspirin, as well as the state of the drug delivery system. RESULTS All BMDs were mercury sphygmomanometers. Four clinics had one BMD each, one clinic had two, and one clinic had four. In one clinic the device was not functional at all until the study cuff was used. None of the clinics had spare cuffs and only one clinic had access to a large cuff. Nine out of 10 (90%) cuffs tested had unsatisfactory valve function, and none was of the size recommended by the guidelines. Although the condition of the mercury was only considered satisfactory in 40% of BMDs, once a new cuff had been fitted to the BMDs all of them were accurate to within 4 mmHg between 50 and 250 mmHg. Fifty per cent of clinic sisters felt they always had sufficient stock of hydrochlorothiazide and alpha-methyldopa, but the supply of more expensive medication was less reliable. Only one clinic always had sufficient aspirin. CONCLUSION Although none of the primary care clinics had fully functioning BMDs, almost all the defects related to malfunctioning and inappropriately sized cuffs, which would be inexpensive to repair or replace. A procedure for routine servicing or replacement of both BMDs and cuffs is needed, as well as optimisation of medication delivery to remote areas.

Abstract
Strategies for controlling cat fleas, Ctenocephalidesfelisfelis (Bouché), have undergone dramatic changes in the past 5 yr. With the advent of on-animal treatments with residual activity the potential for the development of insecticide resistance increases. A larval bioassay was developed to determine the baseline susceptibility of field-collected strains of cat fleas to imidacloprid. All four laboratory strains tested showed a similar level of susceptibility to imidacloprid. Advantages of this bioassay are that smaller numbers of fleas are required because flea eggs are collected for the test. Insect growth regulators and other novel insecticides can also be evaluated. Using a discriminating dose, the detection of reduced susceptibility in field strains can be determined with as few as 40 eggs.

Abstract
We report 2 cases of concordant prune belly syndrome occurring in monozygotic twins. In addition to suggesting a genetic basis for this disease, our 12-year follow-up of these cases illustrates that these patients with an otherwise poor prognosis can have normal growth, development, and renal function with appropriate treatment.

Abstract
Wandering larval, pharate pupal, pupal, and pharate adult stages of the cat flea, Ctenocephalides felis (Bouché), were identified by examination of cuticular cross sections via scanning electron microscopy. Visible morphological characteristics of each stage were identified and described. Various stages of the flea throughout metamorphosis were exposed to juvenile hormone mimics and insect developmental inhibitors. Wandering larvae treated with juvenile hormone mimics were unable to pupate, whereas treated pharate pupae ecdysed to the pupal stage but were unable to enclose. Pupae and pharate adults did not succumb to juvenile hormone mimic exposure, even at concentrations 3 orders of magnitude greater than those that killed 100% of the wandering larvae and the pharate pupae. Adult females were more susceptible to juvenile hormone mimics than males. Possible explanations for the variation in tolerance to juvenile hormone mimics of the differing stadia are discussed. None of the stages were susceptible to insect developmental inhibitor exposure. Analysis of catecholamines that are precursors of cuticle sclerotization and melanization were measured in the wandering larval through the pharate adult stages of the cat flea. N-acetyldopamine concentration was highest in the pupa stage when the flea had a hard, clear cuticle; N-beta-alanyldopamine concentration was highest during the production of the hard, dark cuticle of the pharate adult; and dopamine fluctuated throughout development but was highest in the pupal stage.

Abstract
To determine the molecular mechanism(s) of respiratory syncytial virus (RSV)-induced intercellular adhesion molecule-1 (ICAM-1) upregulation in respiratory epithelial cells (REC; A549 cell cultures), we investigated the roles of the transcription factors NF-kappaB and C/EBP. Increases in ICAM-1 message required de novo mRNA synthesis. ICAM-1 promoter constructs (luciferase reporter gene) transfected into A549 monolayers demonstrated promoter activation following RSV infection. Activation was abolished by site-specific mutation of the NF-kappaB (-228) or C/EBP (-239) sites. These data support the critical role of the activation of NF-kappaB and C/EBP in RSV-induced ICAM-1 expression by REC.

Abstract
OBJECTIVE To evaluate efficacy of a 9.1% (w/w) imidacloprid solution, applied topically, to remove fleas from dogs and the duration of residual flea control when dogs were exposed to continuing flea infestation. ANIMALS 32 adult mixed-breed dogs. PROCEDURE Dogs were allocated to 4 groups of 8 dogs each; dogs of 3 groups received a single dose of imidacloprid, and those of the fourth group received excipient. Each dog was infested with 100 adult fleas on study days -3, -1, 6, 13, 20, 27, and 33. Treatments were applied on day 0. Each dog was examined for live fleas on days -2, 1, 7, 14, 21, 28, and 34. Posttreatment efficacy was determined by comparing the mean number of live fleas remaining on the treated dogs with the mean number of live fleas remaining on the control dogs. RESULTS All 3 imidacloprid dosages provided flea control > or = 96.9% one day after treatment. Maximal efficacy of all 3 dosages (99.1 to 100%) was observed at 7 days after treatment. Flea control with 3.75 mg of imidacloprid/kg of body weight ranged from 94.4 to 96.9% for days 14 to 28 and decreased to 91.6% by 34 days after treatment. Flea control with 7.5 and 10.0 mg of imidacloprid/kg was 97.8 to 100% through day 28. At day 34, dosages of 7.5 and 10.0 mg of imidacloprid/kg were 97.6 and 96.9% efficacious, respectively. CONCLUSION 7.5 or 10.0 mg of imidacloprid/kg are equivalent and superior to 3.75 mg/kg for flea control over the course of a 34 day posttreatment period. CLINICAL RELEVANCE Monthly imidacloprid application of 7.5 to 10 mg/kg will rapidly kill existing and reinfesting flea infestations on dogs and break the flea life cycle by killing adult fleas before egg production begins.

Abstract
When subjected to a crowding/confinement protocol in the laboratory, toadfish become facultatively ureotelic, excreting approximately 90 % of their nitrogenous waste as urea-nitrogen (urea-N). The great majority of this excretion occurs via large, irregular pulses from the head region which occur on average once per day, with a duration of 3 h or less. Pulses measured chemically by the appearance of urea-N in the external water were identical to those measured by assaying [14C]urea appearance in the water from the blood plasma. Individual toadfish maintained plasma urea concentrations over widely differing ranges (6600­39 890 µmol-N l-1). However, independent of absolute levels, both [14C]urea and total urea were distributed at ratios close to unity between the blood plasma and the water compartments of liver and white muscle. At times of pulsatile excretion, plasma urea concentration fell sharply. These decreases, distributed throughout the tissues of the whole body, closely matched the sizes of the measured excretion pulses. Between pulses, plasma urea concentration increased steadily at a much slower rate; the rate of rise, when distributed throughout the tissues of the whole body, corresponded to the time-averaged excretion rate over the whole day. Infusion of a typical pulse amount of urea immediately after the end of a natural pulse event raised plasma urea concentration slightly above the pre-pulse level, but did not induce another pulse event. Plasma cortisol levels declined by approximately 60 % over the 4 h period prior to a natural pulse event and then rose quickly again once the pulse had occurred. These results indicate that urea pulses are due to activation of an excretion mechanism that rapidly clears urea from the blood plasma, thereby lowering stores throughout the whole body. Metabolic production of urea is continuous and is not responsible for pulsatile excretion. The pulse event is not triggered by a specific plasma urea threshold, but may involve the hypothalamo­interrenal axis.

Abstract
Thirteen new (1-13) and seven known (14-20) steroid glycosides were isolated from Henricia downeyae, collected from the offshore waters of the northern Gulf of Mexico. Ethanolic extracts of these starfish caused growth inhibition in bacteria and fungi, potent antifouling activity against barnacle and bryozoan larvae, and feeding deterrent activity against a marine fish. The known compounds are typical glycosides found in several species of the family Echinasteridae, i.e., Echinaster sp. and Henricia laeviuscola. One of the new compounds belongs to this group, whereas the remaining 12 new compounds represent a novel series of steroid glycosides which have aglycons with structural similarities to the "asterosaponins". They possess a delta 9(11) 3 beta, 6 alpha-dihydroxysteroidal aglycon with 23-oxo or 22,23-epoxy functionalities and often a 20-hydroxyl group in the side chain. The sulfate is located at C-6 and the saccharide moiety at C-3, in contrast with the asterosaponins which have the sulfate at C-3 and the oligosaccaride moiety at C-6. All the new compounds contain a glucuronic acid unit, which is uncommon among steroid glycosides from echinoderms. The structures of the new compounds, isolated in amounts ranging from 3.4 to 0.9 mg, were determined by interpretation of their spectral data and by comparison with spectral data of known compounds.

Abstract
Exposure of insects and higher orders of animals to UVC radiation has been shown to result in toxicity with a delayed expression. We have observed an immediate writhing response in slowly wandering third instar larvae of Drosophila melanogaster exposed to UVC radiation at doses that were not lethal. UVB and UVA radiation had no effect. Mutants for the visual and sensory systems appeared to respond normally, but CO(2) anesthesia resulted in reversible inhibition. ebony and silver mutants, which affect different pathways in catecholamine metabolism, showed an absent to reduced response. Using UVC lasers, we were able to demonstrate a response in different regions of the larval body. Furthermore, a 193 nm laser that penetrates only 2-5 micron(s) was able to induce a response but unable to kill the larvae. These results suggest a photochemical reaction occurs in the cuticle which produces free radicals that stimulate the nerves and muscle which are present immediately below the epidermis. Possible targets for the UVC radiation are catecholic compounds secreted and processed into the cuticle of third instar larvae just to pupariation whose primary function is to crosslink the protein and carbohydrate components.

Specialists in our Technical Assistance Center (TAC) use the BRITE system on a Pentium workstation to access information in < 3 s. Manuals, technical bulletins, parts lists, and administrative tools such as word processing and network fax are available electronically. The system allows consistent troubleshooting and definition of customers' problems by TAC specialists. BRITE seamlessly integrates expert system, document retrieval, and relational database technologies; the system runs on a token ring local area network, which is part of a Ciba Corning Diagnostics wide area network. Information received over the wide area network is used to develop and update BRITE daily. BRITE is kept current by input or troubleshooting and new applications from TAC specialists.

Abstract
This study focused on the rates and routes of urea-N and ammonia-N excretion in the ureagenic toadfish and on the possibility that urea-N excretion occurs in pulses. Experimental approaches included the following: confinement in small individual containers with automated hourly sampling of water to follow temporal excretion patterns; divided chambers to separate excretion from the anterior and posterior parts of the fish; collection of urine and rectal fluid via chronic indwelling catheters; and gavage with [14C]-labelled polyethylene glycol 4000 to detect regurgitation of gastrointestinal fluids. When a standardized 'crowding' pre-treatment was employed to induce ureotelic behaviour, the fish exhibited significant elevations in the activity of glutamine synthetase in liver, kidney and gills, elevated plasma and bile urea-N levels, but unchanged ammonia-N and urea-N levels in most other body fluids. Unencumbered ureotelic fish confined in small containers excreted 82 % of their waste-N as urea-N and 18 % as ammonia-N; almost all (94 %) of this urea-N excretion occurred in a single pulse of less than 3 h duration about once every 24 h. This daily pulse did not occur by regurgitation of gut fluids, by excretion through prominent pores behind the pectoral fins or by discharge of rectal fluid or urine. Intestinal and urinary excretion accounted for less than 10 % of whole-body urea-N excretion and a negligible fraction of ammonia-N excretion. Pulsatile urea-N excretion occurred at the head end across the gills and/or body surface. Ammonia-N excretion, which was not pulsatile, also occurred largely through the head end. However, once the toadfish had been placed in divided chambers, urea-N excretion became continuous rather than pulsatile, and ammonia-N excretion increased greatly. A severe stress response was indicated by high levels of plasma cortisol, and the skin, which lacks scales, became a significant route of both ammonia-N and urea-N excretion. We speculate that the normal adaptive significance is that ureotelism facilitates cryptic behaviour, allowing the toadfish to virtually eliminate N-waste excretion during long periods while it remains sheltered in burrows. However, during severe stress, the effects of extremely high cortisol levels overwhelm the ammonia and urea retention mechanisms, and both substances leak across the general body surface.
