Study of UV-Vis molar absorptivity variation and quantitation of anthocyanins using molar relative response factor

The effects of anthocyanin's substitution groups on the UV-Vis molar absorptivity were examined by analyzing a group of 31 anthocyanidin/anthocyanin reference standards with ultra-high performance liquid chromatography-diode array detector (UHPLC-DAD). The substitution groups on aglycones were found to associate with molar absorptivity variations, often neglected in anthocyanin quantitation, resulting in significant analytical errors. A simple yet comprehensive strategy based on the molar relative response factors (MRRFs) and a single master reference calibration (i.e., cyanidin-3-glucoside) was proposed to quantify anthocyanins in red cabbage, blueberry, and strawberry samples with improved analytical accuracy. The results indicate this approach provides an effective, inexpensive, and accurate analytical method for anthocyanins in food materials without using individual reference standards. MRRFs of 617 anthocyanins/anthocyanidins were calculated, and the information is freely available at https://BotanicalDC.online/anthocyanin/. This study could be critical to developing new reference methods for anthocyanin analysis and harmonizing results and data from various sources.

Cardiac MRI feature-tracking-derived torsion mechanics in systolic and diastolic dysfunction in systemic light-chain cardiac amyloidosis

AIM

To describe the myocardial torsion mechanics in cardiac amyloidosis (CA), and evaluate the correlations between left ventricle (LV) torsion mechanics and conventional parameters using cardiac magnetic resonance imaging feature tracking (CMR-FT).

MATERIALS AND METHODS

One hundred and thirty-nine patients with light-chain CA (AL-CA) were divided into three groups: group 1 with preserved systolic function (LV ejection fraction [LVEF] ≥50%, n=55), group 2 with mildly reduced systolic function (40% ≤ LVEF <50%, n=51), and group 3 with reduced systolic function (LVEF <40%, n=33), and compared with age- and gender-matched healthy controls (n=26). All patients underwent cine imaging and late gadolinium-enhancement (LGE). Cine images were analysed offline using CMR-FT to estimate torsion parameters.

RESULTS

Global torsion, base-mid torsion, and peak diastolic torsion rate (diasTR) were significantly impaired in patients with preserved systolic function (p<0.05 for all), whereas mid-apex torsion and peak systolic torsion rate (sysTR) were preserved (p>0.05 for both) compared with healthy controls. In patients with mildly reduced systolic function, global torsion and base-mid torsion were lower compared to those with preserved systolic function (p<0.05 for both), while mid-apex torsion, sysTR, and diasTR were preserved (p>0.05 for all). In patients with reduced systolic function, only sysTR was significantly worse compared with mildly reduced systolic function (p<0.05). At multivariable analysis, right ventricle (RV) end-systolic volume RVESV index and NYHA class were independently related to global torsion, whereas LVEF was independently related to sysTR. RV ejection fraction (RVEF) was independently related to diasTR. LV global torsion performed well (AUC 0.71; 95% confidence interval [CI]: 0.61, 0.77) in discriminating transmural from non-transmural LGE in AL-CA patients.

CONCLUSION

LV torsion mechanics derived by CMR-FT could help to monitor LV systolic and diastolic function in AL-CA patients and function as a new imaging marker for LV dysfunction and LGE transmurality.

Case report: Acquired resistance to crizotinib from a MET Y1230H mutation in a patient with non-small cell lung cancer and KIF5B-MET fusion

Background

The c-met proto-oncogene (MET) serves as a significant primary oncogenic driver in non-small cell lung cancer (NSCLC) and has the potential to fuse with other genes, such as KIF5B, although it occurs infrequently. Only a limited number of reported cases have examined the clinical efficacy of crizotinib in patients with KIF5B-MET gene fusion, with no known data regarding acquired resistance to crizotinib and its potential mechanisms. In this report, we present the clinical progression of a female patient diagnosed with NSCLC and harboring a KIF5B-MET gene fusion.

Case description

The patient initially exhibited partial response to first-line crizotinib treatment, albeit for a short duration and with limited efficacy. Subsequent disease progression revealed the emergence of a secondary MET mutation, specifically MET Y1230H, leading to acquired resistance to crizotinib.

Conclusion

The reporting of this case is imperative for informing clinical practice, given the uncommon occurrence of NSCLC with MET fusion, displaying responsiveness to MET tyrosine kinase inhibitor therapy, as well as the emergence of the secondary Y1230H alteration as a potential resistance mechanism.

Predictive effect of net water uptake on futile recanalisation in patients with acute large-vessel occlusion stroke

AIM

To determine whether net water uptake (NWU) based on automated software evaluation could predict futile recanalisation in patients with acute anterior circulation large-vessel occlusion (LVO).

MATERIALS AND METHODS

Patients with acute anterior circulation LVO undergoing mechanical thrombectomy in Jinling Hospital were evaluated retrospectively. NWU and other baseline data were evaluated by performing univariate and multivariate analyses. The primary endpoint was 90-day modified Rankin scale score ≥3. A nomogram to predict poor clinical outcomes was developed based on multivariate logistic regression analysis.

RESULTS

Overall, 135 patients who underwent thrombectomy with a TICI grade ≥2b were enrolled. In multivariate logistic regression analysis, the following factors were identified as independent predictors of futile recanalisation: age (odds ratio [OR]: 1.055, 95 % confidence interval [CI]: 1.004-1.110, p=0.035), female (OR: 0.289, 95 % CI: 0.098-0.850, p=0.024), hypertension (OR: 3.182, 95 % CI: 1.160-8.728, p=0.025), high blood glucose level (OR: 1.36, 95 % CI: 1.087-1.701, p=0.007), admission National Institutes of Health Stroke Scale score (OR: 1.082, 95 % CI: 1.003-1.168, p=0.043), and NWU (OR: 1.312, 95 % CI: 1.038-1.659, p=0.023).

CONCLUSIONS

NWU based on Alberta Stroke Program Early Computed Tomography (CT) Score (ASPECTS) could be used to predict the occurrence of futile recanalisation in patients with acute anterior circulation LVO ischaemic stroke.

Causal relationship between cigarette smoking behaviors and the risk of hernias: a Mendelian randomization study

PURPOSE

As the global population continues to age, there is a noticeable yearly rise in the incidence of hernias. Simultaneously, smoking, a widespread addictive behavior and a significant contributor to mortality, has evolved into a pervasive public health concern. Existing literature has already established a connection between smoking and an increased risk of postoperative recurrence and postoperative infections following hernia surgery. However, there remains a dearth of research exploring the association between smoking and hernia morbidity. In this study, our objective is to systematically evaluate the causal relationship between cigarette smoking behaviors and hernia morbidity using a Mendelian randomization (MR) approach.

METHODS

Hernia-related data were sourced from the FinnGen Biobank database, while cigarette smoking behavior data were gathered from the GWAS and Sequencing Consortium of Alcohol and Nicotine Use. To assess the causal relationship, we employed five methods: the weighted median, the weighted mode the inverse variance weighted (IVW), MR-Egger, and the simple mode. Sensitivity analysis was conducted, incorporating Cochran's Q test, the MR-Egger intercept test, leave-one-out analysis, and funnel plot. The presentation of the causal relationship is expressed as an odds ratio (OR) along with their corresponding 95% confidence intervals (CI).

RESULTS

Employing the IVW method as the reference standard, we found that smoking intensity is associated with an increased risk of diaphragmatic hernia (OR = 1.21, 95% CI 1.00-1.46, P = 0.047). These consistent findings were further corroborated by the weighted median and weighted mode methods (OR = 1.26, 95% CI 1.03-1.54, P = 0.026; OR = 1.25, 95% CI 1.02-1.52, P = 0.045). Conversely, when applying the IVW method, we identified no statistically significant causal relationship between smoking age, smoking initiation status, smoking cessation status, and the incidence of hernia.

CONCLUSIONS

Our MR study has uncovered genetic evidence linking smoking intensity and the occurrence of diaphragmatic hernia. The risk of developing diaphragmatic hernia rises in tandem with the intensity of smoking. This emphasizes the crucial role of regularly advising patients to cease smoking in clinical settings.

Three-dimensional finite element analysis on stress distribution after different palatoplasty and levator veli palatini muscle reconstruction

OBJECTIVES

To establish a three-dimensional finite element model of the upper palate, pharyngeal cavity, and levator veli palatini muscle in patients with unilateral complete cleft palate, simulate two surgical procedures that the two-flap method and Furlow reverse double Z method, observe the stress distribution of the upper palate soft tissue and changes in pharyngeal cavity area after different surgical methods, and verify the accuracy of the model by reconstructing and measuring the levator veli palatini muscle.

MATERIALS AND METHODS

Mimics, Geomagic, Ansys, and Hypermesh were applied to establish three-dimensional finite element models of the pharyngeal cavity, upper palate, and levator veli palatini muscle in patients with unilateral complete cleft palate. The parameters including length, angle, and cross-sectional area of the levator veli palatini muscle etc. were measured in Mimics, and two surgical procedures that two-flap method and Furlow reverse double Z method were simulated in Ansys, and the area of pharyngeal cavity was measured by hypermesh.

RESULTS

A three-dimensional finite element model of the upper palate, pharyngeal cavity, and bilateral levator veli palatini muscle was established in patients with unilateral complete cleft palate ; The concept of horizontal projection characteristics of the palatal dome was applied to the finite element simulation of cleft palate surgery, vividly simulating the displacement and elastic stretching of the two flap method and Furlow reverse double Z method during the surgical process; The areas with the highest stress in the two-flap method and Furlow reverse double Z method both occur in the hard soft palate junction area; In resting state, as measured, the two flap method can narrow the pharyngeal cavity area by 50.9%, while the Furlow reverse double Z method can narrow the pharyngeal cavity area by 65.4%; The measurement results of the levator veli palatini muscle showed no significant difference compared to previous studies, confirming the accuracy of the model.

CONCLUSIONS

The finite element method was used to establish a model to simulate the surgical procedure, which is effective and reliable. The area with the highest postoperative stress for both methods is the hard soft palate junction area, and the stress of the Furlow reverse double Z method is lower than that of the two-flap method. The anatomical conditions of pharyngeal cavity of Furlow reverse double Z method are better than that of two-flap method in the resting state.

CLINICAL RELEVANCE

This article uses three-dimensional finite element method to simulate the commonly used two-flap method and Furlow reverse double Z method in clinical cleft palate surgery, and analyzes the stress distribution characteristics and changes in pharyngeal cavity area of the two surgical methods, in order to provide a theoretical basis for the surgeon to choose the surgical method and reduce the occurrence of complications.

Expression patterns and prognostic role of m6A RNA methylation regulators in Non-small Cell Lung Cancer

To investigate the expression pattern and prognostic role of m6A RNA methylation regulators in non-small cell lung cancer (NSCLC), we downloaded data from 422 patients from The Cancer Genome Atlas (TCGA) database. The relationship between the expression levels of m6A RNA methylation regulators and clinicopathological variables of NSCLC was analysed using R language. By analysing glioma data in TCGA, we found that a prognostic risk score model could be constructed based on 18 genes with m6A methylation modification. m6A gene alterations were significantly associated with tumour grade and tumour stage. Least Absolute Shrinkage and Selection Operator (LASSO) Cox regression models were used to identify 2 m6A RNA methylation modifiers: IFG2BP2, and METTL14 to construct risk profiles. Based on the risk profile, patients were divided into high-risk and low-risk groups. The overall survival rate of the low-risk group was significantly higher than that of the high-risk group. The results suggest that the prognostic risk score model constructed by m6A methylation regulators can predict the prognosis of glioma patients. IFG2BP2 and METTL14 may be the key m6A methylation regulators involved in the development of NSCLC and can be used as the molecular markers for the prognosis of NSCLC.

Recent progress on defect-engineering in ferroelectric HfO2: The next step forward via multiscale structural optimization

The discovery of unconventional scale-free ferroelectricity in HfO2-based fluorite thin films has attracted great attention in recent years for their promising applications in low-power logic and nonvolatile memories. The ferroelectricity of HfO2 is intrinsically originated from the widely accepted ferroelectric metastable orthorhombic Pca21 phase. In the last decade, defect-doping/solid solution has shown excellent prospects in enhancing and stabilizing the ferroelectricity via isovalent or aliovalent defect-engineering. Here, the recent advances in defect-engineered HfO2-based ferroelectrics are first reviewed, including progress in mono-ionic doping and mixed ion-doping. Then, the defect-lattice correlation, the point-defect promoted phase transition kinetics, and the interface-engineered dynamic behaviour of oxygen vacancy are summarized. In addition, thin film preparation and ion bombardment doping are summarized. Finally, the outlook and challenges are discussed. A multiscale structural optimization approach is suggested for further property optimization. This article not only covers an overview of the state-of-art advances of defects in fluorite ferroelectrics, but also future prospects that may inspire their further property-optimization via defect-engineering.

A combination of proteomics, genetics, and physiology provides insights into the acid-tolerance phenotype of Pseudomonas pergaminensis F77

Acid tolerance is crucial for the effective and persistent mineral weathering by acid-producing bacteria. Here, the molecular basis of the acid tolerance of mineral-weathering Pseudomonas pergaminensis F77 was identified using proteomics analysis of the strain under acid stress. Then, the acid tolerance of strain F77 and its mutants with deletion of the acid tolerance-related genes orf03767, mcp, resR, nueR, yegD, and fxsA, which are involved in the two-component systems, DNA repair, nucleotide binding, and membrane parts, were compared. Finally, the acid tolerance-related physiological mechanisms of strain F77 and its mutants F77ΔnueR and F77ΔresR under acidic conditions were characterized. The significantly upregulated proteins in the acid-adapted and acid-challenged strain F77 included the proteins involved in metabolic pathways associated with ATPase, membrane components, organic acid transmembrane transporters, response to stimulus, nucleotide binding, ABC transporters, and two-component systems. The cell numbers decreased by 24-100% at pH ≤ 4.50, while the membrane fluidity increased by 22-61% at pH ≤ 5.50 for the mutants F77ΔnueR and F77ΔresR, compared with that of strain F77. The intracellular H+-ATPase activities decreased by 29-33% for the mutant F77ΔnueR at pH ≤ 4.50% and 33-79% for the mutant F77ΔresR at all tested pHs (pH ≤ 7.00); meanwhile, the ratios of intracellular NAD+/NADH decreased by 71-91% for the mutant F77ΔresR at all tested pHs (pH ≤ 7.00), compared with that of strain F77. Furthermore, the intracellular putrescine concentrations were reduced by 40-70% for the mutant F77ΔresR at all tested pHs (pH ≤ 7.00) compared with that of strain F77. Our findings suggested that multiple proteins and metabolic pathways were associated with bacterial acid tolerance and revealed that nueR and resR were involved in acid tolerance based on their modulation of multiple acid tolerance-related physiological functions in strain F77.

Direct Z-Scheme Heterostructure of Vertically Oriented SnS2 Nanosheet on BiVO4 Nanoflower for Self-Powered Photodetectors and Water Splitting

The construction of nanostructured Z-scheme heterostructure is a powerful strategy for realizing high-performance photoelectrochemical (PEC) devices such as self-powered photodetectors and water splitting. Considering the band structure and internal electric field direction, BiVO4 is a promising candidate to construct SnS2 -based heterostructure. Herein, the direct Z-scheme heterostructure of vertically oriented SnS2 nanosheet on BiVO4 nanoflower is rationally fabricated for efficient self-powered PEC photodetectors. The Z-scheme heterostructure is identified by ultraviolet photoelectron spectroscopy, photoluminescence spectroscopy, PEC measurement, and water splitting. The SnS2 /BiVO4 heterostructure shows a superior photodetection performance such as excellent photoresponsivity (10.43 mA W-1 ), fast response time (6 ms), and long-term stability. Additionally, by virtue of efficient Z-scheme charge transfer and unique light-trapping nanostructure, the SnS2 /BiVO4 heterostructure also displays a remarkable photocatalytic hydrogen production rate of 54.3 µmol cm-2 h-1 in Na2 SO3 electrolyte. Furthermore, the synergistic effect between photo-activation and bias voltage further improves the PEC hydrogen production rate of 360 µmol cm-2 h-1 at 0.8 V, which is an order of magnitude above the BiVO4 . The results provide useful inspiration for designing direct Z-scheme heterostructures with special nanostructured morphology to signally promote the performance of PEC devices.

Case report: Successful sequential therapy of crizotinb and entrectinib in ROS1-positive non-small-cell lung cancer with brain metastasis in later-settings

RATIONALE

Crizotinib has been approved in many countries for the treatment of patients with advanced ROS1-rearranged non-small cell lung cancers (NSCLC). Entrectinib is a ROS1 inhibitor that has been designed to effectively penetrate and remain in the central nervous system (CNS) and has been recommended as first-line therapy. Few reports have precisely described sequential crizotinb followed by entrectinib in patients with ROS1 fusion in later settings.

PATIENT CONCERNS

A 56-year-old man with a history of occasional smoking visited our hospital with cough, sputum, and shortness of breath.

DIAGNOSIS

He was diagnosed with right lung adenocarcinoma (T4N2M1a, stage IV) after image and histological examination, without EGFR or ALK fusion mutation.

INTERVENTIONS

He received three prior lines of therapies, including chemotherapy, nivolumab monotherapy, and paclitaxel plus anlotinib, with progression-free survival (PFS) of 5, 2, and 11.5 months, respectively. Then the patient began to have headaches and dizziness, and brain magnetic resonance imaging showed multiple brain metastases. Next-generation sequencing (NGS) of the biopsy from neck lymph node identified EZR-ROS1 (1.25% abundance). After 2 months of crizotinib (250 mg daily) plus bevacizumab, all pulmonary and brain lesions decreased, but a small liver lesion was discovered. As treatment went on for another 4 months, the liver lesion continued to grow while other lesions kept decreased or stable state. NGS analysis on the peripheral blood found the disappearance of EZR-ROS1 fusion and a new NTRK2 mutation (c.5C>T, p.Ser2Leu, 0.34% abundance) without other targetable molecular alteration. He received entrectinib (600 mg daily) plus bevacizumab and achieved a partial response. After 7 months of therapy, examination revealed progression of brain lesions.

OUTCOMES

The patient had a total PFS of 13 months from sequential crizotinib and entrectinib therapy.

LESSONS

A ROS1-rearranged NSCLC with CNS metastases responded to sequential tyrosine kinase inhibitors treatment of crizotinb followed by entrectinib. This report has potential implications in guiding decisions for the treatment after crizotinib resistance.

Zn(II) Coordination Polymer: Luminescence Sensing for Fe3+ Ion and Used as Metal Gel Particles Against Lung Cancer

Presented here is a new Zn(II) coordination polymer, namely [Zn2(L)2(bpe)]n (1, H2L = 4-({2-[(4-carboxyphenoxy)methyl]phenyl}methoxy)benzoic acid, bpe = 1,2-bis(4-pyridinyl)ethane), which has been hydrothermally synthesized via the mixed-ligand strategy. Moreover, compound 1 emits intense luminescence at room temperature, and can be used as a luminescent sensor for the detection of Fe3+ in water solution with high selectivity and sensitivity. As representatives of natural polysaccharides, hyaluronic acid (HA) and carboxymethyl chitosan (CMCS) have good biocompatibility. A new type of HA/CMCS gel particles loaded with Paclitaxel drug metal-organic framework was prepared by chemical synthesis method and its micromorphology was studied. Finally, biological experiments were conducted to evaluate the new system's effect on the activity of human lung cancer cells.

Evaluation of renal ischemia-reperfusion injury using CEUS in mice

BACKGROUND

Renal ischemia-reperfusion injury (IRI) frequently occurs clinically. We investigated the value of contrast-enhanced ultrasonography (CEUS) in the evaluation of renal IRI levels in mice.

METHODS

Thirty-six healthy adult male C57BL/6 mice (20-22 g) were randomly divided into the sham, 10 min, 20 min, 30 min, 40 min, and 50 min groups based on the time of renal warm ischemia by blocking the left renal pedicle, approved by the Institutional Animal Ethics Committee. Time-intensity curve (TIC)-derived parameters such as peak enhancement (PE) and wash-in perfusion index (WiPI) were produced using CEUS at 1 h and 24 h after IRI. The severity of kidney injury was detected by the renal tubular necrosis rate which was analyzed by hematoxylin and eosin staining at 24 h after IRI. The Spearman correlation coefficient was used to describe the correlations between PE and WiPI values and the renal tubular necrosis rate.

RESULTS

The PE and WiPI values decreased after IRI in the groups with a warm ischemia time ≥ 20 min. The renal tubular necrosis rate was significantly correlated with the PE value at 1 h (ρ = -0.802) and 24 h (ρ = -0.861) after IRI and the WiPI value at 1 h (ρ = -0.814) and 24 h (ρ = -0.853) after IRI (all p < 0.001).

CONCLUSION

TIC-derived parameters, including PE and WiPI values, can be used to evaluate the severity of renal IRI in mice. CEUS is a safe and effective technology for the detection of renal IRI.

RELEVANCE STATEMENT

CEUS can evaluate the severity of renal ischemia-reperfusion injury by peak enhancement and wash-in perfusion index values selected from various time-intensity curve-derived parameters.

[Adsorption of Iopamidol by NaHCO3-activated Buckwheat Biochar]

NaHCO3-activated buckwheat biochar was studied, and an optimal biochar of 0.25N-BC [m(NaHCO3):m(buckwheat bark)=0.25:1]was selected. SEM, BET, XRD, Raman, FTIR, and XPS methods were applied to analyze the effects of NaHCO3 on the physicochemical properties of buckwheat biochar. The adsorption properties and mechanism of NaHCO3-activated buckwheat biochar for iopamidol(IPM), a nonionic iodol X-ray contrast agent, were also investigated. The results showed that compared with buckwheat skin biochar(BC), NaHCO3-activated biochar had higher structural defects(surface area and pore volume increased, respectively, from 480.40 m2·g-1 and 0.29 cm3·g-1 to 572.83 m2·g-1 and 0.40 cm3·g-1, with ID/IG being 1.22 times that of BC), the carbon and oxygen functional groups on the BC surface changed significantly, and the polarity increased [(N+O)/C from 0.15 to 0.24]. The maximum adsorption capacity of 0.25N-BC for IPM was 74.94 mg·g-1, which was 9.51 times that of BC(7.88 mg·g-1). The pseudo-second-order adsorption kinetics and Langmuir and Freundlich isotherm models could well fit the adsorption of 0.25N-BC for IPM. The adsorption processes were mainly chemical, monolayer, and heterogeneous multilayer adsorption. Pore filling, hydrogen bonding, π-π, and n-π interactions were the main mechanisms of 0.25N-BC adsorption for IPM. Comparing the activated buckwheat biochar by different bases [KOH, Na2CO3, NaHCO3, KHCO3, and Ca(HCO3)2], 0.25N-BC exhibited high adsorption capability and short equilibrium time and could effectively remove the IPM residue in the actual water(secondary sedimentation tank effluent and lake). The removal rate of IPM remained at 74.91% after three adsorption-desorption cycles. The results showed that NaHCO3-activated buckwheat biochar was a green, effective, and sustainable adsorbent for the removal of iodine-containing organic matter.

Development of a nutritional screening and assessment indicator system for patients with esophageal cancer in China: Findings from the Delphi method

BACKGROUND

In China, individuals diagnosed with esophageal cancer are confronted with an elevated risk of nutritional inadequacy or malnutrition throughout the course of their disease, a condition that contributes to various adverse clinical outcomes. A vast corpus of data are burgeoning at an unprecedented rate, primarily due to the revolutionary growth of digitalization technologies and artificial intelligence, notably within the domains of health care and medicine. The purpose of this investigation is to initiate the development of a nutritional screening and assessment indicator framework for patients with esophageal cancer within the Chinese context. We seek to furnish an instrumental reference to facilitate preparations for the forthcoming era of advanced, "deep," evidence-based medicine.

METHODS

An integrative methodology was employed to forge the preliminary draft of the nutritional screening and assessment indicator system for preoperative patients with esophageal cancer. This encompassed a rigorous literature survey, in-depth clinical practice investigation, and the facilitation of expert panel discussions. Thereafter, two iterative consultation phases were conducted using the Delphi method in China. The analytic hierarchy process was deployed to ascertain the weighting of each index within the definitive evaluation indicator system.

RESULTS

The effective response rates for the dual rounds of expert consultation were 91.7% and 86.4%, with commensurate authority coefficients of 0.97 and 0.91. The Kendall harmony coefficients were ascertained to be 0.19 and 0.14 (p < 0.01), respectively. The culminating nutritional screening and assessment indicator system for patients with esophageal cancer comprised 5 primary-level indicators and 38 secondary-level indicators.

CONCLUSIONS

The nutritional screening and assessment indicator system contrived for patients with esophageal cancer is underpinned by cogent theoretical principles, leverages an astute research methodology, and manifests dependable outcomes. This system may be appositely utilized as a meaningful reference for the nutritional screening and assessment process in patients afflicted with esophageal cancer.

LnIII/MnII-LnIII complexes derived from a salicylic azo dye ligand: synthesis, structures, magnetic and fluorescence properties

Two LnIII complexes Ln(HTMSA)3(H2O)2·5.5H2O (Ln = Dy (1) and Tb (2), H2TMSA = 5-azotriazolyl-3-methoxysalicylaldehyde) and two MnII-LnIII clusters [Mn(H2O)6][MnLn2(TTMSA)4(HTTMSA)2(H2O)6]·4H2O (Ln = Dy (3) and Tb (4), H2TTMSA = 5-azotetrazolyl-3-methoxysalicylaldehyde) have been synthesized and structurally characterized. Single-crystal X-ray diffraction reveals that 1 and 2 are isostructural complexes in which the LnIII ions are surrounded by six oxygen atoms from three chelate HTMSA ligands and two oxygen atoms from two coordinated water molecules forming a distorted square-anti-prismatic geometry. In complexes 3 and 4, the MnII ions adjust two LnIII mononuclear anion clusters into tri-nuclear LnIII-MnII-LnIII anion clusters, with an additional [Mn(H2O)6]2+ as a counter ion to maintain the electroneutrality of the compound. Magnetic studies reveal that all the complexes 1-4 show nonzero out-of-phase signals, indicating single-molecule magnet behavior. The photoluminescence spectra of all the complexes were investigated and are discussed in detail.

To establish a risk prediction model for the occurrence of hypoxemia during painless bronchoscopy

The present study was focused on evaluating the clinical predictors of hypoxemia and establishing a multivariable, predictive model for hypoxemia in painless bronchoscopy. A total of 244 patients were enrolled in the study, and data were collected using a self-designed data collection. The retrospective data collected in this study included the relevant data of patients undergoing the painless bronchoscopy, and we used univariate analysis to deal with these influencing factors. Multivariate logistic regression analysis was used to establish the prediction equation, and receiver operating characteristic curve analysis was carried out. Receiver operating characteristic curves and the Hosmer-Lemeshow test were used to evaluate the model performance. P < .05 was considered to indicate statistical significance. Multivariate logistic regression indicated that body mass index (BMI) (odds ratio [OR]: 1.169; 95% confidence interval [CI]: 1.070-1.277), arterial partial pressure of oxygen (PaO2) (OR: 4.279; 95% CI: 2.378-7.699), alcohol consumption (OR: 2.021; 95% CI: 1.063-3.840), and whether the bronchoscope operation time exceeds 30 minutes (OR: 2.486; 95% CI: 1.174-5.267) were closely related to the occurrence of hypoxemia. The prediction model developed by the logistic regression equation was -4.911 + 1.454 (PaO2) + 0.156 (BMI) + 0.703 (Alcohol consumption) + 0.911 (time > 30th minutes). The prediction model showed that the area under the receiver operating characteristic curve was 0.687. The predictive model was well calibrated with a Hosmer-Lemeshow x2 statistic of 4.869 (P = .772), indicating that our prediction model fit well. The accuracy (number of correct predictions divided by the number of total predictions) was 75%. The prediction model, consisting of BMI, PaO2, alcohol consumption, and whether the bronchoscope operation time exceeds 30 minutes. It is an effective predictor of hypoxemia during sedation for painless bronchoscopy.

Neuronal Zinc Transporter ZnT3 Modulates Cerebral Ischemia-Induced Blood-Brain Barrier Disruption

Zinc plays important roles in both physiological and pathological processes in the brain. Accumulation of free zinc in ischemic tissue is recognized to contribute to blood-brain barrier (BBB) disruption following cerebral ischemia, but little is known either about the source of free zinc in microvessels or the mechanism by which free zinc mediates ischemia-induced BBB damage. We utilized cellular and animal models of ischemic stroke to determine the source of high levels of free zinc and the mechanism of free zinc-mediated BBB damage after ischemia. We report that cerebral ischemia elevated the level of extracellular fluid (ECF-Zn) of ischemic brain, leading to exacerbated BBB damage in a rat stroke model. Specifically suppressing zinc release from neurons, utilizing neuronal-specific zinc transporter 3 (ZnT3) knockout mice, markedly reduced ECF-Zn and BBB permeability after ischemia. Intriguingly, the activity of zinc-dependent metalloproteinase-2 (MMP-2) was modulated by ECF-Zn levels. Elevated ECF-Zn during ischemia directly bound to MMP-2 in extracellular fluid, increased its zinc content and augmented MMP-2 activity, leading to the degradation of tight junction protein in cerebral microvessels and BBB disruption. These findings suggest the role of neuronal ZnT3 in modulating ischemia-induced BBB disruption and reveal a novel mechanism of MMP-2 activation in BBB disruption after stroke, demonstrating ZnT3 as an effective target for stroke treatment.

The Experiences of Female Partners of Patients With Erectile Dysfunction Due to Prostate Cancer Treatment in China: A Qualitative Exploration

BACKGROUND

Because of sociocultural factors, Chinese female partners of patients with prostate cancer (PC) may have perspectives and needs that differ from the more published reports of female partners living in Western cultures.

OBJECTIVES

The aim of this study was to explore the experiences of female partners of patients with PC experiencing erectile dysfunction in China.

INTERVENTIONS/METHODS

In this interpretive descriptive design, qualitative data were collected from semistructured telephone interviews with purposively sampled participants from the urology outpatient unit in a hospital in South China. The interviews were audiotaped, transcribed, and analyzed using a constant comparison approach.

RESULTS

Three themes emerged from the analysis of the participants' narratives: (a) acceptance of ceasing sex; (b) preserving intimacy through caregiving; and (c) the need for sexual health-related information.

CONCLUSION

Participants in this study reported that their own sexuality and intimacy were affected by their partner's erectile dysfunction, but they adjusted to sexuality and intimacy changes through their caregiving of their husbands owing to Chinese traditional perspectives on women's obligations. They also reported having unmet informational needs in improving sexual well-being for the sake of their partners, lending further support to the likely benefit of couple-based educational interventions addressing sexual wellness in dyads affected by PC and erectile dysfunction.

IMPLICATIONS FOR PRACTICE

The present study findings highlighted the need for more research attention to the support of Chinese female partners of patients with PC regarding sexual and intimate topics.

Laser speckle reduction using polymer-stabilized liquid crystals doped with Ag nanowires

Miniaturized and pure static devices are expected to be used in laser-imaging systems for speckle reduction. In this study, a pure static device based on polymer-stabilized liquid crystal (PSLC) doped with Ag nanowires was developed to effectively suppress laser speckles. The concentrations of the polymer and Ag nanowires in the PSLC were optimized, and then the PSLC devices were fabricated. A measurement system was set up to characterize the electro-optical properties of the fabricated PSLC devices. Subsequently, a laser projection system was built to demonstrate the speckle-reduction performance. Moreover, the degree of scattering and response time of the developed PSLC devices were investigated and discussed. A PSLC doped with 0.02 wt% Ag nanowires and 3 wt% polymer having a device size of 2 × 2 × 0.1 cm3 was demonstrated to produce a speckle-reduction efficiency of 51.4 % under very low driving voltages. The experimental results verified effectiveness and superiority of the developed speckle reduction method based on PSLC doped with Ag nanowires.

Long-term survival after female pelvic organ-sparing radical cystectomy versus standard radical cystectomy: a multi-institutional propensity score-matched analysis

BACKGROUND

The application of pelvic organ preserving-radical cystectomy (POPRC) in female patients with bladder cancer has attracted more and more attention in recent years. In the current study, the authors aim to compare the long-term oncological outcomes of POPRC versus standard radical cystectomy (SRC) in a large multicenter retrospective cohort.

PATIENTS AND METHODS

Data on female patients with bladder cancer who underwent POPRC or SRC in January 2006 and April 2018 were included from three Chinese urological centers. The primary outcome was overall survival (OS). Secondary outcomes were cancer-specific survival and recurrence-free survival. To decrease the effect of unmeasured confounders associated with treatment selection, 1:1 propensity score matching was performed.

RESULTS

Among the 273 enrolled patients, 158 underwent POPRC (57.9%), and 115 underwent SRC (42.1%). The median follow-up time was 38.6 (15.9-62.5) months. After propensity score matching, each cohort included 99 matched patients. The OS ( P =0.940), cancer-specific survival ( P =0.957), and recurrence-free survival ( P =0.476) did not differ significantly from the two matched cohorts. Subgroup analysis confirmed that the OS was similar between the patients treated with POPRC and SRC across all subgroups examined (all P > 0.05). In multivariable analysis, the surgical method (SRC vs. POPRC) was not an independent risk factor for OS (Hazard ratio 0.874, 95% CI 0.592-1.290; P =0.498).

CONCLUSIONS

The results showed that no significant difference in long-term survival was determined between female patients undergoing SRC and those undergoing POPRC.

Characteristics of intestinal flora in patients with cerebral infarction complicated with Type 2 diabetes mellitus

OBJECTIVES

The intestinal microbial characteristics of patients with simple cerebral infarction (CI) and CI complicated with Type 2 diabetes mellitus (CI-T2DM) are still not clear. This study aims to analyze the differences in the variable characteristics of intestinal flora between patients simply with CI and CI-T2DM.

METHODS

This study retrospectively collected the patients who were admitted to the Affiliated Hospital of Putian University from September 2021 to September 2022. The patients were divided into a CI group (n=12) and a CI-T2DM group (n=12). Simultaneously, 12 healthy people were selected as a control group. Total DNA was extracted from feces specimens. Illumina Novaseq sequencing platform was used for metagenomic sequencing. The Knead Data software, Kraken2 software, and Bracken software were applied for sequencing analysis.

RESULTS

At phylum level, the average ratio of Firmicutes, Bacteroidetes, and Proteobacteria in the CI-T2DM group were 33.07%, 54.80%, and 7.00%, respectively. In the CI group, the ratios of each were 14.03%, 69.62%, and 11.13%, respectively, while in the control group, the ratios were 50.99%, 37.67%, and 5.24%, respectively. There was significant differences in the distribution of Firmicutes (F=6.130, P=0.011) among the 3 groups. At the family level, compared with the CI group, the relative abundance of Eubacteriaceae (t=8.062, P<0.001) in the CI-T2DM group was significantly increased, while Corynebacteriaceae (t=4.471, P<0.001), Methanobacteriaceae (t=3.406, P=0.003), and Pseudomonadaceae (t=2.352, P=0.028) were decreased significantly. At the genus level, compared with the CI group, there was a relative abundance of Cutibacterium (t=6.242, P<0.001), Eubacterium (t=8.448, P<0.001), and Blautia (t=3.442, P=0.002) in the CI-T2DM group which was significantly increased. In terms of Methanobrevibacter (t=3.466, P=0.002), Pyramidobacter (t=2.846, P=0.009) and Pseudomonas (t=2.352, P=0.028), their distributions were decreased significantly in the CI-T2DM group. At the species level, compared with the CI group, the relative abundance of Cutibacterium acnes (t=6.242, P<0.001) in the CI-T2DM group was significantly increased, while Pseudomonas aeruginosa (t=2.352, P=0.028) was decreased significantly. Still at the genus level, linear discriminant analysis effect size (LEfSe) analysis showed that the distributions of Pseudomonas and Blautia were determined to be the most significantly different between the CI-T2DM and the CI group. At the species level, the total number of operational taxonomic units (OTUs) in the 3 groups was 1 491. There were 169, 221, and 192 kinds of OTUs unique to the CI-T2DM, CI, and control group, respectively.

CONCLUSIONS

From phylum level to species level, the composition of intestinal flora in the patients with CI-T2DM is different from those in the patients simply with CI. The change in the proportion of Firmicutes, Bacteroidetes and Proteus compared with the healthy population is an important feature of intestinal flora imbalance in the patients with CI and with CI-T2DM. Attention should be paid to the differential distribution of Bacteroides monocytogenes and butyrate producing bacteria.

Thermodynamics, statistical mechanics and the vanishing pore width limit of confined fluids

Temperature, particle number and volume are the independent variables of the Helmholtz free energy for a bulk fluid. For a fluid confined in a slit pore between two walls, they are usually complemented by the surface area. However, an alternative choice is possible with the volume replaced by the pore width. Although the formulations with such two sets of independent variables are different, we show they are equivalent and present their relations. Corresponding general statistical-mechanics results are also presented. When the pore width becomes very small, the system behaves rather like a two-dimensional (2D) fluid and one can wonder if thermodynamics still holds. We find it remains valid even in the limit of vanishing pore width and show how to treat the divergences in the normal pressure and the chemical potential so that the corresponding 2D results can be obtained. Thus, we show that the Gibbs surface thermodynamics is perfectly capable of describing small systems.

Chinese Soil Moisture Observation Network and Time Series Data Set for High Resolution Satellite Applications

High-quality ground observation networks are an important basis for scientific research. Here, an automatic soil observation network for high-resolution satellite applications in China (SONTE-China) was established to measure both pixel- and multilayer-based soil moisture and temperature. SONTE-China is distributed across 17 field observation stations with a variety of ecosystems, covering both dry and wet zones. In this paper, the average root mean squared error (RMSE) of station-based soil moisture for well-characterized SONTE-China sites is 0.027 m3/m3 (0.014~0.057 m3/m3) following calibration for specific soil properties. The temporal and spatial characteristics of the observed soil moisture and temperature in SONTE-China conform to the geographical location, seasonality and rainfall of each station. The time series Sentinel-1 C-band radar signal and soil moisture show strong correlations, and the RMSE of the estimated soil moisture from radar data was lower than 0.05 m3/m3 for the Guyuan and Minqin stations. SONTE-China is a soil moisture retrieval algorithm that can validate soil moisture products and provide basic data for weather forecasting, flood forecasting, agricultural drought monitoring and water resource management.

I-125 seeds brachytherapy combined with immunotherapy for MET amplification in non-small cell lung cancer from clinical application to related lncRNA mechanism explore: a case report

Advanced non-small cell lung cancer (NSCLC) with MET amplification primarily relies on MET inhibitors for treatment, but once resistance occurs, the available treatment options are limited and the prognosis is typically poor. A 57-year-old man with advanced NSCLC and C-MET amplification was initially treated with crizotinib but developed progressive disease. After the antirotinib treatment, he achieved a partial response for a year. Genetic testing showed high PD-L1 expression, and he was treated with pembrolizumab and chemotherapy for 3 months, with partial response. Maintenance therapy with pembrolizumab and local I-125 seeds brachytherapy (ISB) was given after the lung lesion progressed but other lesions remained stable. The therapy resulted in significant resolution of the right upper lung lesion. It demonstrates the effectiveness of ISB-ICI combination in treating MET amplification advanced NSCLC. Ongoing research and treatment innovation are important in managing advanced NSCLC with complex genetic aberrations. To explore the candidate mechanism of ISB therapy response, we download public genetic data and conduct different expression Lncrnas analysis and pathway analysis to discover radiotherapy related sensitive or resistance lncRNAs and pathways, we found that AL654754.1 is a key lncRNA with radiotherapy response, and it also include in classical p53 and Wnt signaling pathway. Overall, the clinical case reports, combined with the exploration of underlying mechanisms, provide positive guidance for the precise treatment of lung cancer.

Characterization of two new Pylorgus mitogenomes (Hemiptera, Lygaeidae, Ischnorhynchinae) and a mitochondrial phylogeny of Lygaeoidea

Lygaeidae is a large family of Hemiptera (Heteroptera) currently separated into three subfamilies, Ischnorhynchinae, Lygaeinae, and Orsillinae. In this research, the complete mitogenomes of the iscnorhynchines Pylorgusporrectus Zheng, Zou & Hsiao, 1979 and Pylorgussordidus Zheng, Zou & Hsiao, 1979 were sequenced, and the phylogeny of Pylorgus and the Lygaeidae with known complete mitogenomes were examined. The mitogenomes are 15,174 bp and 15,399 bp in size, respectively, and comprised of 13 protein-coding genes (PCGs), 22 transfer RNA genes (tRNAs), two ribosomal RNA genes (rRNAs), and a control region (D-loop). Nucleotide composition is biased toward A and T, and the gene order is identical to that of the putative ancestral arrangement of insects. Eleven PCGs begin with a typical ATN, and the remaining two PCGs begin with TTG (cox1 and nad4l). All tRNAs had a typical cloverleaf secondary structure, but some of them had individual base mismatches. The phylogenetic analyses based on the concatenated nucleotide sequences of the 13 PCGs, using Bayesian inference and maximum likelihood, support the monophyly of Lygaeidae. The results show that P.porrectus and P.sordidus clustered with nine other Lygaeidae. This study includes the first complete sequencing of the mitochondrial genomes of two Pylorgus species, which will provide important data for studying the phylogenetic position of Lygaeidae in Lygaeoidea and reconstructing the phylogenetic relationships within Pentatomomorpha.

A novel extract from Ginkgo biloba inhibits neuroinflammation and maintains white matter integrity in experimental stroke

Ginkgo biloba L. leaf extract (GBE) has been added in many commercial herbal formulations such as EGb 761 and Shuxuening Injection to treat cardiovascular diseases and stroke worldwide. However, the comprehensive effects of GBE on cerebral ischemia remained unclear. Using a novel GBE (nGBE), which consists of all the compounds of traditional (t)GBE and one new compound, pinitol, we investigated its effect on inflammation, white matter integrity, and long-term neurological function in an experimental stroke model. Both transient middle cerebral artery occlusion (MCAO) and distal MCAO were conducted in male C57/BL6 mice. We found that nGBE significantly reduced infarct volume at 1, 3, and 14 days after ischemia. Sensorimotor and cognitive functions were superior in nGBE treated mice after MCAO. nGBE inhibited the release of IL-1β in the brain, promoted microglial ramification, and regulated the microglial M1 to M2 phenotype shift at 7 days post injury. In vitro analyses showed that nGBE treatment reduced the production of IL-1β and TNFα in primary microglia. Administration of nGBE also decreased the SMI-32/MBP ratio and enhanced myelin integrity, thus exhibiting improved white matter integrity at 28 days post stroke. These findings demonstrate that nGBE protects against cerebral ischemia by inhibiting microglia-related inflammation and promoting white matter repair, suggesting that nGBE is a promising therapeutic strategy for long-term recovery after stroke.

TFE3 gene rearrangement and protein expression contribute to a poor prognosis of renal cell carcinoma

Background

TFE3-rearranged renal cell carcinoma (TFE3-rearranged RCC) is a type of kidney cancer with a low incidence, with no consensus about whether it has a worse prognosis than clear cell renal cell carcinoma (ccRCC). This study attempted to elucidate the impact of TFE3-rearranged RCC by analyzing its clinical features and prognosis.

Methods

Patients treated in Sun Yat-sen Memorial Hospital (SYSMH) who were suspected to be diagnosed with TFE3-rearranged RCC were divided into two groups, TFE3-rearranged RCC and ccRCC with positive TFE3 protein expression on immunohistochemistry [TFE3(+) ccRCC], by dual-color, break-apart fluorescence in situ hybridization (FISH). After balancing the baseline characteristics with TFE3(+) ccRCC using the propensity score matching (PSM) method in a ratio of 2, we selected patients diagnosed with ccRCC with negative TFE3 protein expression on immunohistochemistry [TFE3(-) ccRCC]. The impact of TFE3 gene rearrangement and protein expression on renal cell carcinoma was determined by feature comparison with a nonparametric test and survival analysis with the Kaplan‒Meier method.

Results

Among 37 patients suspected of having TFE3-rearranged RCC, 13 patients were diagnosed with TFE3-rearranged RCC, and 24 patients had TFE3(+) ccRCC. The recurrence and new metastasis of TFE3-rearranged RCC was relatively common, even if the tumor stage was early at the first diagnosis. Through feature comparison and survival analysis, we found that TFE3-rearranged RCC was quite similar to TFE3(+) ccRCC. Compared with TFE3(-) ccRCC, TFE3(+) ccRCC tended to have a larger tumor diameter (P = 0.011), higher neutrophil/lymphocyte ratio (NLR) (P = 0.017) and metastatic potential (P = 0.022), and worse overall survival (OS) (P = 0.043) and PFS (P = 0.016). The survival analysis showed that TFE3-rearranged RCC had a worse PFS than ccRCC (P = 0.002), and TFE3(+) RCC had a worse PFS than TFE3(-) RCC (P = 0.001). According to the stratification system based on the combination of TFE3 and lymphovascular invasion (LVI), we further found that the prognosis from good to poor was TFE3(-) LVI(-), TFE3(+) LVI(-), TFE3(+) LVI(+) and TFE3(-) LVI(+), with statistically significant differences in both OS (P = 0.001) and PFS (P < 0.001). In addition, we also reported two cases with poor prognosis, of which one was TFE3-rearranged RCC and the other was TFE3(+) ccRCC.

Conclusions

This is a novel finding that both FISH confirmed TFE3 gene rearrangement-mediated TFE3-rearranged RCC and IHC confirmed positive TFE3 protein expression [TFE3(+)] contribute to a poor prognosis in RCC, suggesting more active treatment and careful follow-up for TFE3(+) RCC patients. The combination of TFE3 and LVI may be a new risk stratification system for RCC.

Singe intraoperative instillation of chemotherapy during radical cystectomy for bladder cancer: Oncological outcome and survival predictors

PURPOSE

To clarify the necessity and effect of a single intraoperative instillation of chemotherapy during radical cystectomy.

METHODS

Patients who underwent radical cystectomy for bladder cancer between January 2013 and April 2019 were retrospectively evaluated and divided into a non-instillation group and an instillation group according to the intraoperative instillation of chemotherapy. Univariate and multivariate Cox regression was used to determine the clinical predictors of overall survival and disease-free survival. Kaplan-Meier analysis and log-rank tests were performed to analyze overall survival and disease-free survival.

RESULTS

Of the 320 patients who were enrolled in the study, 113 underwent radical cystectomy with intraoperative instillation of chemotherapy. Univariate Cox analysis showed that intraoperative instillation was not a risk factor for overall survival or disease-free survival (HR: 1.04, 95% CI: 0.66-1.63, p = 0.864; HR: 1.11, 95% CI: 0.76-1.62, p = 0.602, respectively). As shown in the Kaplan-Meier analysis, no significant differences were noted in overall survival (p = 0.857) and disease-free survival (p = 0.600) between the two groups. A subgroup analysis demonstrated that intraoperative instillation was not associated with a statistically better overall survival and disease-free survival in the nonmuscle invasive (p = 0.852 and 0.836) and muscle-invasive (p = 0.929 and 0.805) patients.

CONCLUSION

A single intraoperative instillation of chemotherapy during radical cystectomy was not related to better disease-free survival or overall survival. It is unnecessary to consider single instillation of chemotherapy as a regular procedure during radical cystectomy.

Therapeutic effects of orthokeratology lens combined with 0.01% atropine eye drops on juvenile myopia

PURPOSE

To explore the therapeutic effects of orthokeratology lens combined with 0.01% atropine eye drops on juvenile myopia.

METHODS

A total of 340 patients with juvenile myopia (340 eyes) treated from 2018 to December 2020 were divided into the control group (170 cases with 170 eyes, orthokeratology lens) and observation group (170 cases with 170 eyes, orthokeratology lens combined with 0.01% atropine eye drops). The best-corrected distance visual acuity, best-corrected near visual acuity, diopter, axial length, amplitude of accommodation, bright pupil diameter, dark pupil diameter, tear-film lipid layer thickness, and tear break-up time were measured before treatment and after 1 year of treatment. The incidence of adverse reactions was observed.

RESULTS

Compared with the values before treatment, the spherical equivalent degree was significantly improved by 0.22 (0.06, 0.55) D and 0.40 (0.15, 0.72) D in the observation and control groups after the treatment, respectively (p<0.01). After the treatment, the axial length was significantly increased by (0.15 ± 0.12) mm and (0.24 ± 0.11) mm in the observation and control groups, respectively, (p<0.01). After the treatment, the amplitude of accommodation significantly declined in the observation group and was lower than that in the control group, whereas both bright and dark pupil diameters significantly increase and were larger than those in the control group (p<0.01). After the treatment, the tear-film lipid layer thickness and tear break-up time significantly declined in the two groups (p<0.01).

CONCLUSIONS

Orthokeratology lens combined with 0.01% atropine eye drops can synergistically enhance the control effect on juvenile myopia with high safety.

Nanoscale thermodynamics needs the concept of a disjoining chemical potential

Disjoining pressure was discovered by Derjaguin in 1930's, which describes the difference between the pressure of a strongly confined fluid and the corresponding one in a bulk phase. It has been revealed recently that the disjoining pressure is at the origin of distinct differential and integral surface tensions for strongly confined fluids. Here we show how the twin concept, disjoining chemical potential, arises in a reminiscent way although it comes out eighty years later. This twin concept advances our understanding of nanoscale thermodynamics. Ensemble-dependence (or environment-dependence) is one hallmark of thermodynamics of small systems. We show that integral surface tension is ensemble-dependent while differential surface tension is not. Moreover, two generalized Gibbs-Duhem equations involving integral surface tensions are derived, as well as two additional adsorption equations relating surface tensions to adsorption-induced strains. All the results obtained in this work further evidence that an approach alternative of Hill's nanothermodynamics is possible, by extending Gibbs surface thermodynamics instead of resorting to Hill's replica trick. Moreover, we find a compression-expansion hysteresis without any underlying phase transition.

Stimulation of atrazine degradation by activated carbon and cathodic effect in soil microbial fuel cell

Soil microbial fuel cells (MFCs) have been increasingly studied in recent years and have attracted significant attention as an environmentally sustainable bioelectrochemical technology. However, the poor conductivity of the soil matrix and the neglect of the cathodic function have limited its application. In this study, quartz sand and activated carbon were subjected to investigation on their influence on atrazine degradation. Atrazine was introduced in different layers (cathode, upper layer) to explore the cathodic effect on atrazine removal. The results revealed that activated carbon could reduce the internal resistance (693 Ω) and generate the highest power density (25.51 mW/m²) of the soil MFCs, and thus increase the removal efficiency (97.92%) of atrazine. The dynamic degradation profiles of atrazine were different for different adding layers. The cathode electrode acted as an electron donor could increase the distance of the effective influence of the soil MFCs' cathode from the middle to the cathode layer. The cathode (region) and the region close to the cathode could degrade atrazine with the atrazine removal efficiencies ranging from 60.67% to 92.79%, and the degradation ability of the cathode was stronger than that of other layers. The degradation effect followed the order: cathode > upper > lower > middle). Geobacter, Desulfobulbus, and Desulfuromonas belonging to the δ-Proteobacteria class were identified as the dominant electroactive microorganisms in the anode layer, while their relative abundances are quite low in the upper and cathode layers. Pseudomonas is an atrazine-degrading bacterium, but its relative abundance was only 0.13-0.51%. Thus, bioelectrochemistry rather than microbial degradation was the primary driving force.

The NG2-glia is a potential target to maintain the integrity of neurovascular unit after acute ischemic stroke

The neurovascular unit (NVU) plays a critical role in health and disease. In the current review, we discuss the critical role of a class of neural/glial antigen 2 (NG2)-expressing glial cells (NG2-glia) in regulating NVU after acute ischemic stroke (AIS). We first introduce the role of NG2-glia in the formation of NVU during development as well as aging-induced damage to NVU and accompanying NG2-glia change. We then discuss the reciprocal interactions between NG2-glia and the other component cells of NVU, emphasizing the factors that could influence NG2-glia. Damage to the NVU integrity is the pathological basis of edema and hemorrhagic transformation, the most dreaded complication after AIS. The role of NG2-glia in AIS-induced NVU damage and the effect of NG2-glia transplantation on AIS-induced NVU damage are summarized. We next discuss the role of NG2-glia and the effect of NG2-glia transplantation in oligodendrogenesis and white matter repair as well as angiogenesis which is associated with the outcome of the patients after AIS. Finally, we review the current strategies to promote NG2-glia proliferation and differentiation and propose to use the dental pulp stem cells (DPSC)-derived exosome as a promising strategy to reduce AIS-induced injury and promote repair through maintaining the integrity of NVU by regulating endogenous NG2-glia proliferation and differentiation.

Enhanced Energy Storage Performance by A-B Site Ambipolar Co-Doping in Antiferroelectrics

Antiferroelectric materials are promising to be used for power capacitive devices. To improve the energy storage performance, solid-solution and defect engineering are widely used to suppress the long-range order by introducing local heterogeneities. However, both methods generally deteriorate either the maximum polarization or breakdown electric field due to damaged intrinsic polarization or increased leakage. Here, we show that forming defect-dipole clusters by A-B site acceptor-donor co-doping in antiferroelectrics can comprehensively enhance the energy storage performance. We took the La-Mn co-doped (Pb_0.9Ba_0.04La_0.04)(Zr_0.65Sn_0.3Ti_0.05)O₃ (PBLZST) as an example. For co-doping with unequal amounts, high dielectric loss, impurity phase, and decreased polarization were observed. By contrast, La and Mn in an equal amount of co-doping can significantly improve the overall energy storage performance. An over 48% increasement in both the maximum polarization (62.7 μC/cm²) and breakdown electric field (242.6 kV/cm) was obtained in 1 mol % La and 1 mol % Mn equally co-doped PBLZST, followed by a nearly two-time enhancement in W_rec (6.52 J/cm³) compared with that of the pure matrix. Moreover, a high energy storage efficiency of 86.3% with an enhanced temperature stability over a wide temperature range can be achieved. The defect-dipole clusters associated with charge-compensated co-doping are suggested to contribute to an enhanced dielectric permittivity, linear polarization behavior, and maximum polarization strength compared with that of the unequal co-doping cases. The defect-dipole clusters are suggested to couple with the host, leading to a high energy storage performance. The proposed strategy is believed to be applicable to modify the energy storage behavior of antiferroelectrics.

Neoadjuvant osimertinib and chemotherapy for stage IIIA primary pulmonary carcinosarcoma with EGFR 19DEL mutation: A case report

Epidermal growth factor receptor (EGFR) mutations have been frequently detected in patients with pulmonary adenocarcinoma. EGFR Exon 19Del and 21L858R mutations are the two most common EGFR mutations. EGFR-tyrosine kinase inhibitors (TKIs) are widely employed to treat patients with non-small cell lung cancer (NSCLC) harboring EGFR mutations. Recently, there has been rapid growth in clinical trials assessing neoadjuvant targeted therapy, indicating good application prospects owing to high efficiency and low toxicity. Herein, we discuss the case of a 56-year-old male patient who was initially diagnosed with stage IIIA pulmonary adenocarcinoma (AJCC,8th edition) of the left lower lung with an EGFR Exon 19Del mutation. The patient was treated with osimertinib but failed to undergo timely review and surgery. Subsequently, the patient underwent two cycles of neoadjuvant chemotherapy (NAC) combined with neoadjuvant targeted therapy. After the tumor load and size had significantly decreased, radical surgery was successfully performed under thoracoscopy. However, postoperative pathology revealed carcinosarcoma, pT2aN0M0, stage IB, and the pathological response was 50%. The present case report provides practical clinical evidence for the application of neoadjuvant targeted therapy combined with chemotherapy for locally advanced primary pulmonary carcinosarcoma with EGFR mutation.

Highly Sensitive Chemiresistive H2S Detection at Subzero Temperature over the Sb-Doped SnO2@g-C3N4 Heterojunctions under UV Illumination

NASA has detected H₂S in the persistently shadowed region of the lunar South Pole through NIR and UV/vis spectroscopy remotely, but in situ detection is generally considered to be more accurate and convincing. However, subzero temperatures in space drastically reduce chemisorbed oxygen ions for gas sensing reactions, making gas sensing at subzero temperature something that has rarely been attempted. Herein, we report an in situ semiconductor H₂S gas sensor assisted by UV illumination at subzero temperature. We constructed a g-C₃N₄ network to wrap the porous Sb doped SnO₂ microspheres to form type II heterojunctions, which facilitate the separation and transport of photoinduced charge carriers under UV irradiation. This UV-driven technique affords the gas sensor a fast response time of 14 s and a response value of 20.1 toward 2 ppm H₂S at -20 °C, realizing the sensitive response of the semiconductor gas sensor at subzero temperature for the first time. Both the experimental observations and theoretical calculation results provide evidence that UV irradiation and the formation of type II heterojunctions together promote the performance at subzero temperature. This work fills the gap of semiconductor gas sensors working at subzero temperature and suggests a feasible method for deep space gas detection.

Chiral hybrid waveguide-plasmon resonances

We investigate the chiroptical responses of the hybrid systems consisting of metal-insulator-metal (MIM) gammadion arrays on top of a dielectric slab waveguide. We demonstrate that both the transverse magnetic (TM) and transverse electric (TE) waveguide modes could be coupled to the antisymmetric localized surface plasmon resonances (LSPRs) of the individual MIM-gammadions, leading to the formation of narrow hybrid waveguide-plasmon resonances (WPRs), of which the TM-WPR is less dependent while the TE-WPR is highly dependent on the handedness of the incident light. Associated with the excitation of the TE-WPRs, strong negative and positive circular dichroism (CD) peaks with high quality factors could be obtained on the short-wavelength and long-wavelength side of the LSPRs of the MIM-gammadion, respectively. Moreover, we show that the variation on either the lattice period or slab waveguide thickness allows for easily tuning the TE-WPRs based CD peaks over a relative wide spectral range. Our proposed hybrid system provides tunable and strong CD responses with narrow linewidth, which may have applications in chiral selective imaging, chiral plasmonic bio-sensing and spectroscopy.

Direct Z-Scheme SnSe2/SnSe Heterostructure Passivated by Al2O3 for Highly Stable and Sensitive Photoelectrochemical Photodetectors

To mimic the natural photosynthesis system, a Z-scheme heterostructure is proposed as a viable and effective strategy for efficient solar energy utilization such as photocatalysis and photoelectrochemical (PEC) water splitting due to the high carrier separation efficiency, fast charge transport, strong redox, and wide light absorption. However, it remains a huge challenge to form a direct Z-scheme heterostructure due to the internal electric-field restriction and vital band-alignment at the interface. Herein, the van der Waals heterostructure based on the allotrope SnSe₂ and SnSe is designed and synthesized by a two-step vapor phase deposition method to overcome the limitation in the formation of the Z-scheme heterostructure for the first time. The Z-scheme heterostructure of SnSe₂/SnSe is confirmed by X-ray photoelectron spectroscopy, ultraviolet photoelectron spectroscopy, PEC measurement, density functional theory calculations, and water splitting. Strikingly, the PEC photodetectors based on the Z-scheme heterostructure show a synergistic effect of superior stability from SnSe and fast photoresponse from SnSe₂. As such, the SnSe₂/SnSe Z-scheme heterostructure shows a good photodetection performance in the ultraviolet to visible wavelength range. Furthermore, the photodetector shows a faster response/recovery time of 13/14 ms, a higher photosensitivity of 529.13 μA/W, and a higher detectivity of 4.94 × 10⁹ Jones at 475 nm compared with those of single components. Furthermore, the photodetection stability of the SnSe₂/SnSe is also greatly improved by a-thin-Al₂O₃-layer passivation. The results imply the promising rational design of a direct Z-scheme heterostructure with efficient charge transfer for high performance of optoelectronic devices.

Bi2 Te3 /Bi2 Se3 /Bi2 S3 Cascade Heterostructure for Fast-Response and High-Photoresponsivity Photodetector and High-Efficiency Water Splitting with a Small Bias Voltage

Large-scale multi-heterostructure and optimal band alignment are significantly challenging but vital for photoelectrochemical (PEC)-type photodetector and water splitting. Herein, the centimeter-scale bismuth chalcogenides-based cascade heterostructure is successfully synthesized by a sequential vapor phase deposition method. The multi-staggered band alignment of Bi₂ Te₃ /Bi₂ Se₃ /Bi₂ S₃ is optimized and verified by X-ray photoelectron spectroscopy. The PEC photodetectors based on these cascade heterostructures demonstrate the highest photoresponsivity (103 mA W^-1 at -0.1 V and 3.5 mAW^-1 at 0 V under 475 nm light excitation) among the previous reports based on two-dimensional materials and related heterostructures. Furthermore, the photodetectors display a fast response (≈8 ms), a high detectivity (8.96 × 10⁹ Jones), a high external quantum efficiency (26.17%), and a high incident photon-to-current efficiency (27.04%) at 475 nm. Due to the rapid charge transport and efficient light absorption, the Bi₂ Te₃ /Bi₂ Se₃ /Bi₂ S₃ cascade heterostructure demonstrates a highly efficient hydrogen production rate (≈0.416 mmol cm^-2  h^-1 and ≈14.320 µmol cm^-2  h^-1 with or without sacrificial agent, respectively), which is far superior to those of pure bismuth chalcogenides and its type-II heterostructures. The large-scale cascade heterostructure offers an innovative method to improve the performance of optoelectronic devices in the future.

Achieving Carbon Neutrality through Urban Planning and Design

Much of the research on climate change has focused on carbon reduction in cities or countries. However, more attention needs to be paid to how to achieve carbon neutrality in the urban design and planning stage, and the lack of quantitative analysis of carbon related to urban space makes it difficult to locate urban space and provide direct guidance for urban planning and design. This study proposed three optimization paths to achieve carbon neutrality in multi-scale urban building clusters. Firstly, we reconstructed the quantitative calculation system of urban building communities with the goal of carbon neutrality; secondly, we screened the carbon source reduction and carbon sink interventions that are suitable for multi-scale urban building communities; finally, we constructed a carbon emission and carbon sink calculation system of planning and design schemes based on the layout of relevant elements of planning and design schemes with a grid cell of 100 × 100 m. In practice, there was a gap of about 115,000 tons of CO₂ from the carbon-neutral target and 26% of carbon emission was distributed in the Xiajiabian Station TOD. In this study, nine types of carbon reduction measures were adopted to achieve carbon neutrality in the region, among which the highest carbon reduction was achieved by biomass energy measures, accounting for 29% of the total carbon reduction of 33,745.27 T. The objective of this study is to accurately and quantitatively assess the carbon targets of urban spaces at different scales and adopt effective measures to achieve carbon neutrality.

A Survey of the Landscape Visibility Analysis Tools and Technical Improvements

Visual perception of the urban landscape in a city is complex and dynamic, and it is largely influenced by human vision and the dynamic spatial layout of the attractions. In return, landscape visibility not only affects how people interact with the environment but also promotes regional values and urban resilience. The development of visibility has evolved, and the digital landscape visibility analysis method allows urban researchers to redefine visible space and better quantify human perceptions and observations of the landscape space. In this paper, we first reviewed and compared the theoretical results and measurement tools for spatial visual perception and compared the value of the analytical methods and tools for landscape visualization in multiple dimensions on the principal of urban planning (e.g., complex environment, computational scalability, and interactive intervention between computation and built environment). We found that most of the research was examined in a static environment using simple viewpoints, which can hardly explain the actual complexity and dynamic superposition of the landscape perceptual effect in an urban environment. Thus, those methods cannot effectively solve actual urban planning issues. Aiming at this demand, we proposed a workflow optimization and developed a responsive cross-scale and multilandscape object 3D visibility analysis method, forming our analysis model for testing on the study case. By combining the multilandscape batch scanning method with a refined voxel model, it can be adapted for large-scale complex dynamic urban visual problems. As a result, we obtained accurate spatial visibility calculations that can be conducted across scales from the macro to micro, with large external mountain landscapes and small internal open spaces. Our verified approach not only has a good performance in the analysis of complex visibility problems (e.g., we defined the two most influential spatial variables to maintain good street-based landscape visibility) but also the high efficiency of spatial interventions (e.g., where the four recommended interventions were the most valuable), realizing the improvement of intelligent landscape evaluations and interventions for urban spatial quality and resilience.

Association between psoriasis and lung cancer: two-sample Mendelian randomization analyses

BACKGROUND

Observational studies reported an association between psoriasis and risk of lung cancer. However, whether psoriasis is causally associated with lung cancer is unclear.

METHODS

Genetic summary data of psoriasis were retrieved from two independent genome-wide association studies (GWAS). Genetic information of lung cancer was retrieved from GWAS of International Lung Cancer Consortium. A set of quality control steps were conducted to select instrumental tools. We performed two independent two-sample Mendelian randomization (MR) analyses and a meta-analysis based on the two independent MR estimates to assess the causal relationship between psoriasis and lung cancer (LUCA) as well as its subtypes, squamous cell carcinoma (LUSC) and adenocarcinoma (LUAD).

RESULTS

Between-SNP heterogeneity was present for most MR analyses, whereas horizontal pleiotropy was not detected for all MR analyses. Multiplicative random-effect inverse variance weighted (IVW-MRE) method was therefore selected as the primary MR approach. Both IVW-MRE estimates from the two independent MR analyses suggested that there was no significant causal relationship between psoriasis and LUCA as well as its histological subtypes. Sensitivity analyses using other four MR methods gave similar results. Meta-analysis of the two IVW-MRE derived MR estimates yielded an odds ratio (OR) of 1.00 (95% CI 0.95-1.06) for LUCA, 1.01 (95% CI 0.93-1.08) for LUSC, and 0.97 (95% CI 0.90-1.06) for LUAD.

CONCLUSION

Our results do not support a genetic association between psoriasis and lung cancer and its subtypes. More population-based and experimental studies are warranted to further dissect the complex correlation between psoriasis and lung cancer.

A Novel Lymphangiogenesis-Related Gene Signature can Predict Prognosis and Immunosuppressive Microenvironment in Patients with Clear Cell Renal Cell Carcinoma

Background: Lymphangiogenesis represents a key event in the progression and metastasis of patients with clear cell renal cell carcinoma (ccRCC). Nevertheless, the prognostic value of lymphangiogenesis-related genes (LRGs) in ccRCC patients remains unknown. Method: Differential analyses were performed to identify differentially expressed LRGs between normal and tumor tissues. A univariate Cox analysis was performed to identify differently expressed LRGs associated with overall survival (OS). LASSO and multivariate Cox analyses were performed to construct and optimize the LRG signature. To further explore the molecular characterization of the LRG signature, a functional enrichment analysis, immune signature, somatic mutations, and drug sensitivity were assessed. Immunohistochemistry (IHC) and immunofluorescence staining were performed to validate the relationship between lymphangiogenesis and immunity using our ccRCC samples. Results: Four candidate genes (IL4, CSF2, PROX1, and TEK) were eventually available to construct the LRG signature in the training set. Patients in the high-risk group had a shorter survival than those in the low-risk group. The LRG signature was an independent prognostic factor of OS. These results were confirmed in the validation group. The LRG signature was correlated with immunosuppressive cell infiltration, T cell exhaustion markers, somatic mutations, and drug sensitivity. The IHC and immunofluorescence staining results confirmed the correlation between lymphangiogenesis and CD163⁺ macrophages, exhausted CD8⁺PD-1⁺, and CD8⁺ LAG3⁺ T cells. Conclusion: A novel prognostic signature based on LRGs could provide insight into the prognostic evaluation and treatment of ccRCC patients.

Construction of the model for predicting prognosis by key genes regulating EGFR-TKI resistance

Background: Previous studies have suggested that patients with lung adenocarcinoma (LUAD) will significantly benefit from epidermal growth factor receptor tyrosine kinase inhibitors (EGFR-TKI). However, many LUAD patients will develop resistance to EGFR-TKI. Thus, our study aims to develop models to predict EGFR-TKI resistance and the LUAD prognosis. Methods: Two Gene Expression Omnibus (GEO) datasets (GSE31625 and GSE34228) were used as the discovery datasets to find the common differentially expressed genes (DEGs) in EGFR-TKI resistant LUAD profiles. The association of these common DEGs with LUAD prognosis was investigated in The Cancer Genome Atlas (TCGA) database. Moreover, we constructed the risk score for prognosis prediction of LUAD by LASSO analysis. The performance of the risk score for predicting LUAD prognosis was calculated using an independent dataset (GSE37745). A random forest model by risk score genes was trained in the training dataset, and the diagnostic ability for distinguishing sensitive and EGFR-TKI resistant samples was validated in the internal testing dataset and external testing datasets (GSE122005, GSE80344, and GSE123066). Results: From the discovery datasets, 267 common upregulated genes and 374 common downregulated genes were identified. Among these common DEGs, there were 59 genes negatively associated with prognosis, while 21 genes exhibited positive correlations with prognosis. Eight genes (ABCC2, ARL2BP, DKK1, FUT1, LRFN4, PYGL, SMNDC1, and SNAI2) were selected to construct the risk score signature. In both the discovery and independent validation datasets, LUAD patients with the higher risk score had a poorer prognosis. The nomogram based on risk score showed good performance in prognosis prediction with a C-index of 0.77. The expression levels of ABCC2, ARL2BP, DKK1, LRFN4, PYGL, SMNDC1, and SNAI2 were positively related to the resistance of EGFR-TKI. However, the expression level of FUT1 was favorably correlated with EGFR-TKI responsiveness. The RF model worked wonderfully for distinguishing sensitive and resistant EGFR-TKI samples in the internal and external testing datasets, with predictive area under the curves (AUC) of 0.973 and 0.817, respectively. Conclusion: Our investigation revealed eight genes associated with EGFR-TKI resistance and provided models for EGFR-TKI resistance and prognosis prediction in LUAD patients.

[A case of sclerocornea combined with open-angle glaucoma]

A patient complained of progressive visual acuity decline in the left eye for 3 years was admitted. The appearance of the patient was bilateral microcornea. After ocular ultrasonography, ultrasound biomicroscopy, etc, the patient was diagnosed as sclerocornea of the left eye with open-angle glaucoma. Trabeculectomy of the left eye was performed after drug treatment failed, and there were no surgical complications. The intraocular pressure of the left eye was normal and the anterior chamber was well formed 6 months after surgery.
