The Risks of Ranking: Revisiting Graphical Perception to Model Individual Differences in Visualization Performance. IEEE TRANSACTIONS ON VISUALIZATION AND COMPUTER GRAPHICS 2024; 30:1756-1771. Abstract
Graphical perception studies typically measure visualization encoding effectiveness using the error of an "average observer", leading to canonical rankings of encodings for numerical attributes: e.g., position area angle volume. Yet different people may vary in their ability to read different visualization types, leading to variance in this ranking across individuals not captured by population-level metrics using "average observer" models. One way we can bridge this gap is by recasting classic visual perception tasks as tools for assessing individual performance, in addition to overall visualization performance. In this article we replicate and extend Cleveland and McGill's graphical comparison experiment using Bayesian multilevel regression, using these models to explore individual differences in visualization skill from multiple perspectives. The results from experiments and modeling indicate that some people show patterns of accuracy that credibly deviate from the canonical rankings of visualization effectiveness. We discuss implications of these findings, such as a need for new ways to communicate visualization effectiveness to designers, how patterns in individuals' responses may show systematic biases and strategies in visualization judgment, and how recasting classic visual perception tasks as tools for assessing individual performance may offer new ways to quantify aspects of visualization literacy. Geographic differences and variation of functional components of brown rice in 690 mini-core collections from global germplasms. Heliyon 2023; 9:e23035. [PMID: 38149206 PMCID: PMC10750027 DOI: 10.1016/j.heliyon.2023.e23035] [Citation(s) in RCA: 0] [Impact Index Per Article: 0] [Reference Citation Analysis] [Abstract] [Key Words] [Track Full Text] [Download PDF] [Figures] [Journal Information] [Subscribe] [Scholar Register] [Received: 12/12/2022] [Revised: 11/20/2023] [Accepted: 11/24/2023] [Indexed: 12/28/2023] Open
Abstract
Objective To understand the geographic differences and variations in the functional components of brown rice cores collected from global rice germplasms. Methods Four functional components, γ-aminobutyric acid (GABA), resistant starch (RS), total flavonoids, and alkaloids, in brown rice from 690 mini-core collections from 31 countries from five continents and the International Rice Research Institute, were analyzed using a spectrophotometry colorimetric method, and the results were statistically validated. Conclusion The highest average amounts of functional components were obtained in Asian germplasms, except for GABA, and total flavonoids were highest in brown rice from Europe and Oceania, followed by Asia. The highest coefficient of variation for GABA was observed in Asia; that for RS and total flavonoids was observed in Africa, followed by Asia; and that for alkaloids was observed in America, followed by Asia. Overall, Asian countries were the most prominent and representative zones with the highest genotypic potential for functional components of brown rice. Forty-one rice accessions with enriched functional components originated mostly from biodiversity-rich areas in China, followed by those in the Philippines. Late sowing favored the enrichment of these components in brown rice. The current study provides a reference for rice breeding with enriched functional constituents, and guidelines for screening functional rice that could be used for human chronic disease research.

Genome-Wide Association Study Reveals the Genetic Basis of Total Flavonoid Content in Brown Rice. Genes (Basel) 2023; 14:1684. [PMID: 37761824 PMCID: PMC10531027 DOI: 10.3390/genes14091684] [Citation(s) in RCA: 0] [Impact Index Per Article: 0] [Reference Citation Analysis] [Abstract] [Key Words] [MESH Headings] [Track Full Text] [Journal Information] [Subscribe] [Scholar Register] [Received: 07/22/2023] [Revised: 08/21/2023] [Accepted: 08/22/2023] [Indexed: 09/29/2023] Open
Abstract
Flavonoids have anti-inflammatory, antioxidative, and anticarcinogenic effects. Breeding rice varieties rich in flavonoids can prevent chronic diseases such as cancer and cardio-cerebrovascular diseases. However, most of the genes reported are known to regulate flavonoid content in leaves or seedlings. To further elucidate the genetic basis of flavonoid content in rice grains and identify germplasm rich in flavonoids in grains, a set of rice core collections containing 633 accessions from 32 countries was used to determine total flavonoid content (TFC) in brown rice. We identified ten excellent germplasms with TFC exceeding 300 mg/100 g. Using a compressed mixed linear model, a total of 53 quantitative trait loci (QTLs) were detected through a genome-wide association study (GWAS). By combining linkage disequilibrium (LD) analysis, location of significant single nucleotide polymorphisms (SNPs), gene expression, and haplotype analysis, eight candidate genes were identified from two important QTLs (qTFC1-6 and qTFC9-7), among which LOC_Os01g59440 and LOC_Os09g24260 are the most likely candidate genes. We also analyzed the geographic distribution and breeding utilization of favorable haplotypes of the two genes. Our findings provide insights into the genetic basis of TFC in brown rice and could facilitate the breeding of flavonoid-rich varieties, which may be a prevention and adjuvant treatment for cancer and cardio-cerebrovascular diseases.

Abstract
Medicinal and food homologous adlay (Coix lachryma-jobi L. var. ma-yuen Stapf) plays an important role in natural products promoting human health. We demonstrated the systematic actional mechanism of functional ingredients in adlay to promote human health, based on the PubMed, CNKI, Google, and ISI Web of Science databases from 1988 to 2022. Adlay and its extracts are rich in 30 ingredients with more than 20 health effects based on human and animal or cell cultures: they are anti-cancer, anti-inflammation, anti-obesity, liver protective, anti-virus, gastroprotective, cardiovascular protective, anti-hypertension, heart disease preventive, melanogenesis inhibiting, anti-allergy, endocrine regulating, anti-diabetes, anti-cachexia, osteoporosis preventive, analgesic, neuroprotecting, suitable for the treatment of gout arthritis, life extending, anti-fungi, and detoxifying effects. Function components with anti-oxidants are rich in adlay. These results support the notion that adlay seeds may be one of the best functional foods and further reveal the action mechanism of six major functional ingredients (oils, polysaccharides, phenols, phytosterols, coixol, and resistant starch) for combating diseases. This review paper not only reveals the action mechanisms of adding adlay to the diet to overcome 17 human diseases, but also provides a scientific basis for the development of functional foods and drugs for the treatment of human diseases.

Abstract
Objective: To investigate and analyze the current situation, screening, clinical characteristics, prevention and treatment of bleeding esophageal varices in cirrhotic patients with portal hypertension in Tibet region. Methods: Clinical data of cirrhotic patients with portal hypertension through March 2017 to February 2020 from Tibet region were collected and analyzed retrospectively. Results: 511 cases with liver cirrhosis were included in the study, of which 185 cases (36.20%) had compensated cirrhosis and 326 cases (63.80%) had decompensated cirrhosis. Further analysis of the etiological data of liver cirrhosis showed that 306 cases (59.88%) were of chronic hepatitis B, 113 cases (22.11%) of alcoholic liver disease, and 68 cases (13.31%) of chronic hepatitis B combined with alcoholic liver disease. Among patients with compensated liver cirrhosis, 48 cases (25.95%) underwent endoscopic examination of which 33 diagnosed as high-risk variceal bleeding. However, none of these 33 cases had received non-selective β-blocker therapy, and only four patients had received endoscopic variceal banding therapy. Among patients with decompensated liver cirrhosis, 83 cases (25.46%) had a history of upper gastrointestinal bleeding, 297 cases (91.10%) had ascites, 23 cases (7.05%) had hepatic encephalopathy, and 3 cases (0.92%) had hepatorenal syndrome. Among the patients with a history of upper gastrointestinal bleeding, 42 cases (50.60%) had received secondary preventive treatment for bleeding esophageal varices, including 39 cases of endoscopic treatment, 1 case of endoscopic combined drug treatment, 3 cases of interventional treatment, and 2 cases of surgical treatment. Conclusion: Chronic hepatitis B and alcoholic liver diseases are the main causes of liver cirrhosis in Tibet region. Moreover, this region lacks screening, prevention and treatment for bleeding esophageal varices in cirrhotic patients with portal hypertension. Therefore, it is necessary to increase the screening of high-risk groups to prevent and improve the first-time bleeding, and promote multidisciplinary team to prevent and treat re-bleeding.

Abstract
Mesenchymal stem cells (MSC) rely on their ability to integrate physical and spatial signals at load bearing sites to replace and renew musculoskeletal tissues. Designed to mimic unloading experienced during spaceflight, preclinical unloading and simulated microgravity models show that alteration of gravitational loading limits proliferative activity of stem cells. Emerging evidence indicates that this loss of proliferation may be linked to loss of cellular cytoskeleton and contractility. Low intensity vibration (LIV) is an exercise mimetic that promotes proliferation and differentiation of MSCs by enhancing cell structure. Here, we asked whether application of LIV could restore the reduced proliferative capacity seen in MSCs that are subjected to simulated microgravity. We found that simulated microgravity (sMG) decreased cell proliferation and simultaneously compromised cell structure. These changes included increased nuclear height, disorganized apical F-actin structure, reduced expression, and protein levels of nuclear lamina elements LaminA/C LaminB1 as well as linker of nucleoskeleton and cytoskeleton (LINC) complex elements Sun-2 and Nesprin-2. Application of LIV restored cell proliferation and nuclear proteins LaminA/C and Sun-2. An intact LINC function was required for LIV effect; disabling LINC functionality via co-depletion of Sun-1, and Sun-2 prevented rescue of cell proliferation by LIV. Our findings show that sMG alters nuclear structure and leads to decreased cell proliferation, but does not diminish LINC complex mediated mechanosensitivity, suggesting LIV as a potential candidate to combat sMG-induced proliferation loss.

Abstract
MCS-MA-TEPA microparticles, with 251.22 mg g-1 of adsorption capacity for Cd(II), higher than most of the counterparts, were first fabricated by chemical coprecipitation, spray drying, and Michael addition reaction, without any cross-linker participation. These Fe3O4-nanoparticle-embedded microparticles of 5.95 μm in size, derived from modifications by methyl acrylate (MA) and tetraethylenepentamine (TEPA) on magnetic chitosan (MCS) microparticles, were of plum-pudding-like and wrinkle-like topography portrayed by TEM and SEM. Such features were beneficial to adsorbent recycling and Cd(II) capture. BET examinations illustrated 6.084 m2 g-1 of specific surface area, 0.015 mL g-1 of pore volume, and 6.536 nm of pore diameter. FTIR, VSM, XRD, TEM-SAED, TG, and DTG characterizations were indicative of successful synthesis, satisfactory magnetism, well-defined architecture, and good thermostability. Optimal adsorption parameters for Cd(II) were determined via batch experiments. Thermodynamic parameters and adsorption data fitting implied an exothermic, spontaneous, monolayer, and chemisorption process. XPS analyses confirmed a potential adsorption mechanism that N and O atoms on microparticles chelated with Cd(II) ions in solutions. Additionally, MCS-MA-TEPA-Cd(II) microparticles were magnetically separated easily and had outstanding reusability even after five-time recycling, with a slight adsorption capability loss (< 12%). Altogether, MCS-MA-TEPA microparticles might serve as a promising adsorbent for contaminated water scavenging.

Abstract
The work presented here aims to fabricate dual-purpose adsorbent with adsorption selectivity for Hg(II) and antibacterial activity. TSC-PGMA-MACS microspheres were first constructed via esterification of malic acid (MA) with chitosan (CS) and through successively grafting glycidyl methacrylate (GMA) and thiosemicarbazide (TSC) onto MACS microsphere surfaces. Fourier transform infrared spectroscopy, elemental analysis, energy-dispersive X-ray spectrometry, X-ray diffraction, differential scanning calorimetry, thermogravimetry, differential thermogravimetry, scanning electron microscopy, and Brunauer-Emmett-Teller results provided ample evidence that new mesoporous adsorbent, with 35.340 m2 g-1 of specific surface area and abundant -NH2 and C═S, was successfully fabricated and had loose crystalline, thermodynamically stable, and well-defined architectures, beneficial for Hg(II) adsorption and bacterial cell killing. Optimal adsorption parameters were determined via varying pH, time, concentrations, and temperatures, and pH 6.0 was chosen as an optimal pH for Hg(II) adsorption. Adsorption behavior, described well by pseudo-second-order kinetic and Langmuir isotherm models, and thermodynamic parameters implied a chemical, monolayer, endothermic, and spontaneous adsorption process, and the maximum adsorption capacity for Hg(II) was 242.7 mg g-1, higher than most of the available adsorbents. Competitive adsorption exhibited excellent adsorption selectivity for Hg(II) in binary-metal solutions. Besides, TSC-PGMA-MACS microspheres had outstanding reusability even after five times recycling, with adsorption capability loss <14%. Several potential adsorption sites and bonding modes were proposed. Notably, TSC-PGMA-MACS microspheres before and after adsorption were of high antibacterial activity against Escherichia coli and Staphylococcus aureus (MICs, 2 and 0.25 mg mL-1), superior to CS powders, and possible antibacterial mechanisms were also summarized. Altogether, dual-purpose TSC-PGMA-MACS microspheres might be promising adsorbent for contaminated water scavenging.

Abstract
Staphylococcus aureus is an opportunistic pathogen affecting both human and animal species. An effective vaccine to prevent S. aureus bovine disease and transmission would have positive effects on animal well-being, food production, and human health. The objective of this study was to identify multiple antigens that are immunoreactive during udder colonization and disease for exploration as vaccine antigens to prevent bovine mastitis. Staphylococcus aureus produces several cell wall-anchored and surface-associated virulence factors that play key roles in the pathogenesis of mastitis. Many of these proteins are conserved between different strains of S. aureus and represent promising vaccine candidates. We used an immunoproteomics approach to identify antigenic proteins from the surface of S. aureus. The expression of cell wall and surface proteins from S. aureus was induced under low iron conditions, followed by trypsin extraction and separation by 2-dimensional electrophoresis. The separated proteins were blotted with antibodies from mastitic bovine milk and identified by liquid chromatography-mass spectrometry. Thirty-eight unique proteins were identified, of which 8 were predicted to be surface exposed and involved in S. aureus virulence. Two surface proteins, iron-regulated surface determinant protein C (IsdC) and ESAT-6 secretion system extracellular protein (EsxA), were cloned, expressed, and purified from Escherichia coli for confirmation of immune reactivity by ELISA. A PCR of 37 bovine S. aureus isolates indicated that the presence of esxA and isdC is conserved, and amino acid alignments revealed that IsdC and EsxA sequences are highly conserved. The immunoproteomics technique used in this study generated reproducible results and identified surface exposed and reactive antigens for further characterization.

Abstract
Objective: To investigate the feasibility and efficacy of transcatheter closure of anastomotic leakage after aortic surgery using Amplatzer Vascular Plug Ⅲ (AVP Ⅲ). Methods: A retrospective analysis was performed in 5 patients with anastomotic leakage after aortic surgery, who underwent transcatheter closure in our hospital from January to June 2017 using AVP Ⅲ. Surgeries were performed in 3 cases of Standford type A dissection, 1 case of ascending aortic aneurysm and 1 case of persistent truncus. There were 3 males, and age was (43.8±13.1) years old. Anastomotic leakages located at the ascending aorta in 4 patients, and the other one located between the aortic arch and the stent-graft.Three of them had aorta-right atrium fistula and patients suffered from progressive heart failure. False aneurysm between aorta and pulmonary artery was formed in 1 patient, and patent aortic false lumenwas found in the other patient. All the AVP Ⅲ were deployed based on a femoral arteriosus loop. Patients were followed up after transcatheter closure to observe the clinical results. Results: Six AVP Ⅲ were successfully implanted in the 5 patients. Trivial residual shunt was seen in 1 patient after closure. The patients were followed up 6 (1, 6) months. The cardiac function improved from NYHA class Ⅱ-Ⅳ to class Ⅰ-Ⅱ after the procedure in 3 congestive heart failure patients. The right atrium systolic pressure was significantly reduced after the procedure((8.7±1.8) mmHg (1 mmHg=0.133 kPa) vs. (24.3±2.3) mmHg, P=0.03). The diameter of the false aneurysm reduced in 1 patient after the procedure. Complete thrombosis formation of the thoracic false lumen was observed in 1 patient. Conclusion: Transcatheter closure of anastomotic leakage after aortic surgery using AVP Ⅲ is feasible and effective according to our primary experience.

CCAAT enhancer binding protein β promotes tumor growth and inhibits apoptosis in prostate cancer by methylating estrogen receptor β. Neoplasma 2018; 65:34-41. Abstract
The CCAAT enhancer binding protein β (C/EBPβ) is overexpressed at late stages in carcinogenesis of prostate cancer (PCa), suggesting that it could potentially contribute to progression of PCa. Estrogen receptor beta (ERβ) is a tumor suppressor gene in PCa. However, whether C/EBPβ could regulate ERβ by promoter methylation is still poorly understood. In this study, expression levels of C/EBPβ and ERβ in two PC lines (LNCap and PC-3), prostatic epithelial cell line (RWPE-1), forty-eight paired non-cancerous and cancerous peripheral blood samples were examined via qRT-PCR, western blotting and methylation-specific PCR. In addition, PCa cell line was infected with pCDH-C/EBPβ and pLKO.1-C/EBPβ and expression levels of C/EBPβ, ERβ and DNA methyltransferases were detected. Finally, the role of C/EBPβ in proliferation and apoptosis of PCa cell lines was examined by MTT and flow cytometer assay. Our results show a higher frequency of promoter methylation of ERβ levels in blood samples from PCa patients (16 of 48 cases) compared with that from healthy controls (3 of 48). Besides, elevated expression levels of C/EBPβ were found in PCa patients and two PCa lines (LNCap and PC-3) compared to non-cancerous cases or prostatic epithelial cell line (RWPE-1), while opposite expression levels of ERβ were found. Overexpression of C/EBPβ could regulate ERβ expression, DNA methyltransferases expression, cell proliferation and apoptosis. Our results support the conclusion that C/EBPβ down-regulated ERβ expression through increasing its promoter methylation, and then regulated proliferation and apoptosis in PCa.

Enhanced surface ozone during the heat wave of 2013 in Yangtze River Delta region, China. THE SCIENCE OF THE TOTAL ENVIRONMENT 2017; 603-604:807-816. Abstract
Under the background of global warming, occurrence of heat waves has increased in most part of Europe, Asia and Australia along with enhanced ozone level. In this paper, observational air temperature and surface ozone in the Yangtze River Delta (YRD) region of China during summer of 2013, and the regional chemistry-climate model (RegCM-CHEM4) were applied to explore the relationship between heat wave and elevated ground-level ozone. Observations indicated that YRD experienced severe heat waves with maximum temperature up to 41.1°C, 6.1°C higher than the definition of heat wave in China, and can last for as long as 27days. Maximum ozone reached 160.5ppb, exceeding the national air quality standard (secondary level) as 74.7ppb. Moreover, ozone was found to increase at a rate of 4-5ppbK-1 within the temperature range of 28-38°C, but decrease by a rate of -1.3~-1.7ppbK-1 under extremely high temperature. A typical heat wave case (HW: 24/7-31/7) and non-heat wave case (NHW: 5/6-12/6) were selected to investigate the mechanism between heavy ozone and heat waves. It was found that chemical reactions play the most important role in ozone formation during HW days, which result in 12ppb ozone enhancement compared to NHW days. Chemical formation of ozone can be influenced by several factors. During heat waves, a more stagnant condition, controlled by anti-cyclone with sink airflow, led to less water vapor in YRD from south and contributed to less cloud cover, which favored a strong solar radiation environment and ozone significantly increasing. High temperature also slightly promote the effect of vertical turbulence and horizontal advection, which beneficial to ozone remove, but the magnitude is much smaller than chemical effect. Our study suggests that the chemical reaction will potentially lead to substantial elevated ozone in a warmer climate, which should be taken into account in future ozone related issues.

Abstract
Currently, no protocols or commercial kits are available to determine the serotypes of Salmonella by using Luminex MAGPIX®. In this study, an xTAG assay for serotype determination of Salmonella suitable for Luminex MAGPIX® is described and 228 Salmonella isolates were serotype determined by this xTAG assay. The xTAG assay consists of two steps: 1) Multiplex PCR to amplify simultaneously O, H and Vi antigen genes of Salmonella, and 2) Magplex-TAG™ microsphere hybridization to identify accurately the specific PCR products of different antigens. Compared with the serotyping results of traditional serum agglutination test, the sensitivity and specificity of the xTAG assay were 95.1% and 100%, respectively. The agreement rate of these two assays was 95.2%. Compared with Luminex xMAP® Salmonella Serotyping Assay (SSA) kit, the advantages of this xTAG assay are: First, the magnetic beads make it applicable to both the Luminex®100/200™ and MAGPIX® systems. Second, only primers rather than both primers and probes are needed in the xTAG assay, and the process of coupling antigen-specific oligonucleotide probes to beads is circumvented, which make the xTAG assay convenient to be utilized by other laboratories. The xTAG assay may serve as a rapid alternative or complementary method for traditional Salmonella serotyping tests, especially for laboratories that utilize the MAGPIX® systems.

Abstract
Objectives. Functional components in alliums have long been maintained to play a key role in modifying the major risk factors for chronic disease. To obtain a better understanding of alliums for chronic disease prevention, we conducted a systematic review for risk factors and prevention strategies for chronic disease of functional components in alliums, based on a comprehensive English literature search that was conducted using various electronic search databases, especially the PubMed, ISI Web of Science, and CNKI for the period 2007-2016. Allium genus especially garlic, onion, and Chinese chive is rich in organosulfur compounds, quercetin, flavonoids, saponins, and others, which have anticancer, preventive cardiovascular and heart diseases, anti-inflammation, antiobesity, antidiabetes, antioxidants, antimicrobial activity, neuroprotective and immunological effects, and so on. These results support Allium genus; garlic and onion especially may be the promising dietotherapeutic vegetables and organopolysulfides as well as quercetin mechanism in the treatment of chronic diseases. This review may be used as scientific basis for the development of functional food, nutraceuticals, and alternative drugs to improve the chronic diseases.

Abstract
Effluents from hospital and aquaculture are considered important sources of quinolone resistance. However, little information is available on the impact of this effluent on nearby rivers. In this study, 188 ciprofloxacin-resistant bacterial isolates obtained from rivers near hospitals and aquaculture were screened for plasmid-mediated quinolone resistance (PMQR) genes. Species identification, antibiotic susceptibility testing, and PMQR gene transferability assessment were conducted for PMQR-positive bacteria. Representative qnrS2-encoding plasmids were subsequently sequenced using a primer-walking approach. In total, 44 isolates (23.4%) were positive for qnr genes (16 qnrB2, 3 qnrS1, and 25 qnrS2) and 32 isolates (17.0%) were positive for aac(6')-Ib-cr. Other PMQR genes were not detected. The qnrB2 and aac(6')-Ib-cr genes had a higher prevalence in aquaculture samples than in hospital samples, and were significantly associated with Enterobacteriaceae (p < 0.05). In contrast, the prevalence of qnrS2 was not site-related, but was significantly associated with Aeromonas spp. (p < 0.05). All PMQR isolates were resistant to three or more classes of antibiotics. Eleven qnrS2-harboring plasmids from Aeromonas spp., including a novel conjugative plasmid pHP18, were selected for sequencing. These plasmids were small in size (6,388-16,197 bp) and belonged to the IncQ or IncU plasmid family, with qnrS2 being part of a mobile insertion cassette. Taken together, our findings suggest that aquaculture is a possible source for aac(6')-Ib-cr and qnrB2 dissemination, and demonstrate the ubiquity of qnrS2 in aquatic environments. Finally, Aeromonas spp. served as vectors for qnrS2 with the help of IncQ-type plasmids.

Abstract
Influenza A (H7N9) virus has been causing human infections in China since February 2013, raising serious concerns of potential pandemics. Previous studies demonstrate that human infection is directly linked to live animal markets, and that the internal genes of the virus are derived from H9N2 viruses circulating in the Yangtze River Delta area in Eastern China. Here following analysis of 109 viruses, we show a much higher genetic heterogeneity of the H7N9 viruses than previously reported, with a total of 27 newly designated genotypes. Phylogenetic and genealogical inferences reveal that genotypes G0 and G2.6 dominantly co-circulate within poultry, with most human isolates belonging to the genotype G0. G0 viruses are also responsible for the inter- and intra-province transmissions, leading to the genesis of novel genotypes. These observations suggest the province-specific H9N2 virus gene pools increase the genetic diversity of H7N9 via dynamic reassortments and also imply that G0 has not gained overwhelming fitness and the virus continues to undergo reassortment.

Abstract
Sleep is a vital segment of life, however, the mechanisms of diet promoting sleep are
unclear and are the focus of research. Insomnia is a general sleep disorder and functional foods are
known to play a key role in the prevention of insomnia. A number of studies have demonstrated that
major insomnia risk factors in human being are less functional foods in dietary. There are higher
functional components in functional foods promoting sleep, including tryptophan, GABA, calcium,
potassium, melatonin, pyridoxine, L-ornithine and hexadecanoic acid; but wake-promoting neurochemical
factors include serotonin, noradrenalin, acetylcholine, histamine, orexin and so on. The factors promoting sleep in human
being are the functional foods include barley grass powder, whole grains, maca, panax, Lingzhi, asparagus powder,
lettuce, cherry, kiwifruits, walnut, schisandra wine, and milk; Barley grass powder with higher GABA and calcium, as
well as potassium is the most ideal functional food promoting sleep, however, the sleep duration for modern humans is
associated with food structure of ancient humans. In this review, we put forward possible mechanisms of functional
components in foods promoting sleep. Although there is clear relevance between sleep and diet, their molecular
mechanisms need to be studied further.

Abstract
We investigated the genetic diversity and evolution of the M gene of human influenza A viruses in Hangzhou (Zhejiang province, China) from 2009 to 2013, including subtypes of A(H1N1) pdm09 strains and seasonal A(H3N2) strains. Subtypes of analyzed viruses were identified by cell culture and real-time reverse transcription-polymerase chain reaction, followed by cloning, sequencing and phylogenetic analyses of the M gene. Assessment of 5675 throat swabs revealed a positive rate for the influenza virus of 20.46%, and 827 cases were diagnosed as. infections due to influenza A viruses. Seventy-six influenza-A strains were selected randomly from nine stages during six phases of a virus epidemic. Sequences of the M gene showed high homology among six epidemics with identities of amino-acid sequences of 98.98-100%. All strains contained the adamantine-resistant mutation S31N in its M2 protein. Two of the A(H1N1)pdm09 strains had double mutants of V27A/S31N or V271/S31N. One of the seasonal A(H3N2) viruses had another form of double-mutant R45H/S31N. Evolutionary rate of the M gene was much lower than that of the HA gene and NA gene. Compared with A(H3N2) strains, higher positive pressure on the M1 and M2 proteins of A(H1N1) pdm09 viruses was observed. Separate analyses of M1 and M2 proteins revealed very different selection pressures. Knowledge of the genetic diversity and evolution of the M gene of human influenza-A viruses will be valuable for the control and prevention of diseases.

Abstract
OBJECTIVE To understand the molecular epidemiologic features of human metapnenmovirus (hMPV) in children with respiratory tract infection in Hangzhou. METHODS 2 593 throat swabs were collected from patients with respiratory tract infections who visited the hospitals with sentinel surveillance programs from January 2011 to December 2013, including 1 676 outpatients and 917 inpatients. Total nucleic acid was extracted from the specimens and the fusion (F) protein gene of hMPV was amplified by quantitative real-time reverse transcription polymerase chain reaction (RT-PCR), with positive samples picked to compare with the sequence of hMPV in GenBank, after the sequence of amplification products were determined. Other two types of common respiratory virus were tested using RT-PCR. RESULTS The overall positive rate in this study was 6.51% (169/2 593), with 6.62% (111/1 676) in outpatients and 6.32% (58/917) in inpatients, but no statistically significant difference was found (χ(2) = 0.086, P = 0.769). The rates was 7.01% in males and 5.72% in females, with no statistically significant difference in different sex (χ(2) = 1.676, P = 0.195). The positive rate was 14.14% (28/198)in the 2-year-olds, 14.01% (22/158)in 3-year olds. The rate in 2-year olds was higher than in other groups, with statistically significant differences between the groups (χ(2) = 38.654, P = 0.000). Of the 169 positive cases, 153 (90.53%) in the younger than 5 years olds. The rates of infection with hMPV in winter and spring were statistically higher than in summer and autumn (χ(2) = 67.032, P = 0.000). The rate of co-infection was 19.52% (33/169). 88 amplified productions were selected for gene sequence analysis, and the F gene homology were 81.6%-100.0% with reference strains in GenBank. Data showed that all the 4 viral subtypes: A2 (52.27% , 46/88), B1 (37.51%, 33/88), B2 (9.09%, 8/88) and A1 (1.13%, 1/88) co-circulated during the study. However, different subtypes appeared predominant in different years:hMPV subtype B1 was in 2011 and 2012, subtype A2 in the end of 2012 and in 2013. Of the 88 specimens, gene sequences were determinate, with A genotype accounted for 67.56% (25/37), B genotype for 32.43% (12/37)in children younger than 1-year olds, and A genotype accounted for 43.13% (22/51), B genotype for 56.86% (29/51)in children above 1-year olds. Significant differences between the two groups (χ(2) = 5.143, P = 0.023) were noticed. CONCLUSION It was confirmed that hMPV was one of the substantial pathogens causing the respiratory tract infections. Data from our study suggested that the peak time of hMPV infection predominated during winter and spring in Hangzhou. Both hMPV subtype B1 and subtype A2 were found popular in this study, with hMPV genotype A dominating in children younger than 1-year olds.

Abstract
OBJECTIVE To comprehend the epidemiologic of hepatitis E and genetic characteristics of hepatitis E virus (HEV) in Hangzhou from 2004 to 2011. METHODS Using China information system for disease control and prevention, the incidence of hepatitis E from 2004 to 2011 in Hangzhou city, and the basic information of patients were collected. In 2011, 65 hepatitis E laboratory confirmed cases were selected by random number table sampling method from the hospitals designated infectious diseases in Hangzhou city, and acquisition of the 60 blood specimens and stool specimens of 18 copies. One city and two surrounding counties were selected by cluster random sampling method in the context of Hangzhou city, and the pig slaughters and farmers were selected as the sampling point, and acquisition of pig gallbladder specimens of 52 copies, and 30 stool samples of scatter-feed pigs, 15 stool specimens of scatter-feed rabbits. HEV was tested in samples, gene extraction and analysis of gene sequence were conducted which were compared with gene bank HEV gene sequence, and a phylogenetic tree was formed. The epidemic characteristics of hepatitis E of Hangzhou city from 2004 to 2011 were described. The difference of incidence of hepatitis E was analyzed between years and sexes in Hangzhou city. RESULTS There were reported a total of 3 490 cases of hepatitis E in Hangzhou from 2004 to 2011, and 3 cases of death; The average annual incidence rate was 5.79/100 000 (3 490/60 276 338). There was the overall upward trend in incidence between different years (χ² = 52.38, P < 0.01) , which the highest was 8.10/100 000 (705/8 700 373) in 2011, and the lowest incidence rate was 4.19/100 000 in 2005. The incidence of males (8.12/100 000 (2 474/30 450 990) ) was significantly higher than that of the females (3.46/100 000 (1 016/29 384 491) ) (χ² = 558.45, P < 0.05). 78 specimens of blood and stool were collected, including 16 positive samples, with positive rate 21%. There were a total of 97 specimens of pig gallbladder, pig manure and rabbit stool, including 2 positive rabbit stool samples, with positive rate of 2%. HEV genes isolated from Hangzhou were mainly type IV, with homology of 91.8% to 100%; compared with human type IV strains, the homology of nucleotide was 84.6%-96.7%; compared with type IV strain of pig genome sequence alignment, homology was 82.6%-95.2%. CONCLUSION Hepatitis E's incidence showed an increasing trend year by year in Hangzhou. HEV of type IV was dominant, and HEV strains in the human and swine were highly homologous.

Inflammation-related genetic variants predict toxicity following definitive radiotherapy for lung cancer. Clin Pharmacol Ther 2014; 96:609-15. Abstract
Definitive radiotherapy improves locoregional control and survival in inoperable non-small cell lung cancer (NSCLC) patients. However, radiation-induced toxicities (pneumonitis/esophagitis) are common dose-limiting inflammatory conditions. We therefore conducted a pathway-based analysis to identify inflammation-related SNPs associated with radiation-induced pneumonitis or esophagitis. 11,930 SNPs were genotyped in 201 stage I-III NSCLC patients treated with definitive radiotherapy. Validation was performed in an additional 220 NSCLC cases. After validation, 19 SNPs remained significant. A polygenic risk score (PRS) was generated to summarize the effect from validated SNPs. Significant improvements in discriminative ability were observed by adding the PRS into the clinical/epidemiological variable-based model. We then used 277 lymphoblastoid cell-lines to assess radiation sensitivity and eQTL relationships of the identified SNPs. Three genes (PRKCE,DDX58 and TNFSF7) were associated with radiation sensitivity. We concluded that inflammation-related genetic variants could contribute to the development of radiation-induced toxicities. These loci could assist in predicting those unfavorable events.

Influenza H7N9 and H9N2 viruses: coexistence in poultry linked to human H7N9 infection and genome characteristics. J Virol 2014; 88:3423-31. Abstract
UNLABELLED Avian influenza virus A of the novel H7N9 reassortant subtype was recently found to cause severe human respiratory infections in China. Live poultry markets were suspected locations of the human H7N9 infection sources, based on the cases' exposure histories and sequence similarities between viral isolates. To explore the role of live poultry markets in the origin of the novel H7N9 virus, we systematically examined poultry and environmental specimens from local markets and farms in Hangzhou, using real-time reverse transcription-PCR (RT-PCR) as well as high-throughput next-generation sequencing (NGS). RT-PCR identified specimens positive for the H7 and N9 genomic segments in all of the 12 poultry markets epidemiologically linked to 10 human H7N9 cases. Chickens, ducks, and environmental specimens from the markets contained heavily mixed subtypes, including H7, N9, H9, and N2 and sometimes H5 and N1. The idea of the coexistence of H7N9 and H9N2 subtypes in chickens was further supported by metagenomic sequencing. In contrast, human H7N9 infection cases (n = 31) were all negative for H9N2 virus according to real-time RT-PCR. The six internal segments were indistinguishable for the H7N9 and H9N2 viruses. The H9, N2, and internal-segment sequences were very close to the sequence of the H9N2 virus circulating in chickens in China recently. Our results provide direct evidence that H9N2 strains coexisted with the novel human-pathogenic H7N9 influenza virus in epidemiologically linked live poultry markets. Avian influenza A virus of the H9N2 subtype likely made a recent contribution to the evolution of the H7N9 virus and continues to do so. IMPORTANCE Our results suggest that avian influenza A virus of the H9N2 subtype likely made a recent contribution to the evolution of the H7N9 virus, a novel reassortant avian influenza virus A subtype, and continues to do so. The finding helps shed light on how the H7N9 virus emerged, spread, and transmitted to humans. It is of considerable interest for assessing the risk of the possible emergence of novel reassortant viruses with enhanced transmissibility to humans.

Environmental connections of novel avian-origin H7N9 influenza virus infection and virus adaptation to the human. SCIENCE CHINA-LIFE SCIENCES 2013; 56:485-92. Abstract
A novel H7N9 influenza A virus has been discovered as the causative identity of the emerging acute respiratory infection cases in Shanghai, China. This virus has also been identified in cases of infection in the neighboring area Hangzhou City in Zhejiang Province. In this study, epidemiologic, clinical, and virological data from three patients in Hangzhou who were confirmed to be infected by the novel H7N9 influenza A virus were collected and analyzed. Human respiratory specimens and chicken feces from a contacted free market were tested for influenza virus by real-time reverse transcription PCR (RT-PCR) and sequencing. The clinical features of the three cases were similar featured with high fever and severe respiratory symptoms; however, only one of the patients died. A certain degree of diversity was observed among the three Hangzhou viruses sequenced from human samples compared with other reported H7N9 influenza A viruses. The sequences of the novel avian-origin H7N9 influenza viruses from Hangzhou City contained important amino acid substitutions related to human adaptation. One of the Hangzhou viruses had gained a novel amino acid substitution (Q226I) in the receptor binding region of hemagglutinin. More importantly, the virus sequenced from the chicken feces had a 627E substitution in the PB2 protein instead of the mammalian-adapted 627K substitution that was found in the PB2 proteins from the Hangzhou viruses from the three patients. Therefore, the newly-emerging H7N9 virus might be under adaptation pressure that will help it "jump" from avian to human hosts. The significance of these substitutions needs further exploration, with both laboratory experiments and extensive field surveillance.
