Abstract
Objective: To investigate the efficacy of neoadjuvant therapy (NAT) on HER2-positive breast cancer and to analyze their clinicopathological features. Methods: A total of 480 cases of HER2-positive breast cancer who received neoadjuvant therapy (NAT), diagnosed at the Department of Pathology of Fudan University Shanghai Cancer Center from 2015 to 2020, were retrospectively identified. Clinicopathological parameters such as age, tumor size, molecular subtype, type of targeted therapy, Ki-67 proliferation index, ER and HER2 immunohistochemical expression, and HER2 amplification status were analyzed to correlate with the efficacy of NAT. Results: Among 480 patients with HER2-positive breast cancer, 209 achieved pathology complete response (pCR) after NAT, with a pCR rate of 43.5%. Of all the cases,457 patients received chemotherapy plus trastuzumab and 23 patients received chemotherapy with trastuzumab and pertuzumab. A total of 198 cases (43.3%) achieved pCR in patients with chemotherapy plus trastuzumab, and 11 cases (47.8%) achieved pCR in patients with chemotherapy plus trastuzumab and pertuzumab. The pCR rate in the latter group was higher, but there was no statistical significance. The results showed that the pCR rate of IHC-HER2 3+patients (49%) was significantly higher than that of IHC-HER2 2+patients (26.1%, P<0.001). The higher the mean HER2 copy number in the FISH assay, the higher the pCR rate was achieved. The expression level of ER was inversely correlated with the efficacy of NAT, and the pCR rate in the ER-positive group (28.2%) was significantly lower than that in the ER-negative group (55.8%, P<0.001). The pCR rate (29.1%) of patients with luminal B type was lower than that of HER2 overexpression type (55.8%, P<0.001). In addition, higher Ki-67 proliferation index was associated with higher pCR rate (P<0.001). The pCR rate was the highest in the tumor ≤2 cm group (57.7%), while the pCR rate in the tumor >5 cm group was the lowest (31.1%). The difference between the groups was significant (P=0.005). Conclusions: HER2 copy numbers, HER2 immunohistochemical expression level, molecular subtype, ER expression level and Ki-67 proliferation index are significantly associated with pCR after NAT. In addition, fluorescence in situ hybridization results, HER2/CEP17 ratio and tumor size could also significantly affect the efficacy of NAT.

Abstract
Objective: To explore the characteristics of orthokeratology lenses designed for small correction zones and their effectiveness and safety in long-term prevention and control of myopia in children and adolescents. Methods: It was a prospective cohort study that included myopic children and adolescents who received corneal reshaping treatment at the Qingdao Eye Hospital of Shandong First Medical University between January 2019 and May 2020. The patients were randomly divided into two groups using computer-generated randomization, and were fitted with corneal reshaping lenses with small treatment zones and conventional designs, respectively. The uncorrected visual acuity, best-corrected visual acuity, refractive error, and axial length were measured before and after 6, 12, and 18 months of wearing the lenses. Corneal topography with the Pentacam was also performed, and the area and diameter of the corneal treatment zone were calculated using the Matlab software. Results: A total of 60 myopic patients (60 eyes) were enrolled, including 29 males and 31 females, with an age of (10.40±1.01) years and a spherical equivalent of (-2.88±0.42) D. There were 30 cases in the small correction zone group and 30 cases in the conventional group. There was no significant difference in uncorrected visual acuity and spherical equivalent between the two groups at each time point after treatment. The axial growth in the conventional group was (0.16±0.09) mm at 6 months after treatment, (0.28±0.17) mm at 12 months, and (0.37±0.20) mm at 18 months, whereas in the small treatment zone group it was (0.06±0.05) mm, (0.12±0.10) mm, and (0.18±0.14) mm, respectively. The myopia progression rate in the small treatment zone group was only 37.50%, 42.86%, and 48.64% of the conventional group at 6, 12, and 18 months, respectively. Corneal topography showed that the treatment area in the conventional group was (6.98±0.89) mm², while in the small treatment zone group it decreased by 23.2% [(5.36±0.73) mm²] (P<0.05). Correlation analysis revealed that the axial increase after 18 months of lens wearing was negatively correlated with the age before lens wearing (P<0.05), positively correlated with the corneal surface treatment zone size (P<0.05), and not correlated with the pupil diameter and spherical equivalent (all P>0.05). After the shaping treatment, the rate of adverse reaction, which was mild, in both groups was 10%, and the symptoms disappeared. Conclusion: Orthokeratology lenses with smaller treatment zones can significantly reduce the rate of axial length growth in children and adolescents compared to lenses with conventional treatment zones, without compromising treatment safety.

Abstract
Objective: To investigate the relationship between serum autocrine motor factor (Autotaxin) level and pulmonary ultrasound score (LUS) and the disease severity and 28-day mortality of patients with acute respiratory distress syndrome (ARDS). Methods: Totally 142 ARDS patients admitted to Danzhou People's Hospital from January 2019 to December 2021 were selected, and serum Autotaxin level and LUS score of ARDS patients on the day of onset were detected. According to the survival within 28 days after entering the intensive care unit, ARDS patients were divided into survival group (86 cases) and death group (56 cases). According to the oxygenation index, ARDS patients were divided into mild group (200 mmHg<oxygenation index≤300 mmHg, 36 cases), moderate group (100 mmHg<oxygenation index≤200 mmHg, 61 cases) and severe group (oxygenation index≤100 mmHg, 45 cases). The receiver operating characteristic curve (ROC) was performed to analyze the value of serum autotaxin level and LUS score to predict the death of patients with ARDS. Kaplan-Meier method was used to draw the survival curve, and Log-rank test was used for comparison between groups. Cox multivariate regression analysis was used to analyze the risk factors of death in patients with ARDS. Results: The LUS score [(26.50±5.20 vs 13.45±3.70, t=11.974,P<0.01] and serum Autotaxin level [(54.83±16.28)μg/L vs (32.70±11.85) μg/L,t=13.842,P<0.01] in the death group were significantly higher than those in the survival group, the difference is statistically significant. The serum autotaxin level and LUS score in severe group were significantly higher than those in mild group and moderate group (all were P<0.001). ROC curve showed that the combino ation of autotaxin and LUS score had the largest AUC to predict the AUC of death in patients with ARDS (0.904, 95CI:0.847-0.962), with the highest accuracy of 88.2%. Survival curve analysis showed that the survival rate of high autotaxin group was significantly lower than that of low autotaxin group (44.1% vs 75.7%,P<0.001), and the survival rate of high LUS score group was significantly lower than that of low LUS score group (49.4% vs 73.8%,P=0.003). Cox multivariate regression analysis showed that elevated LUS score (HR=1.983, 95%CI: 1.402-4.715,P<0.001) and Autotaxin level (HR=2.604, 95%CI: 1.853-6.317,P<0.001) were risk factors for death in patients with ARDS (P<0.05). Conclusion: The increase of serum autotaxin level and LUS score is related to the severity and death of patients with ARDS, which are risk factors for 28-day death in ARDS patients, and can be used as a reference mdicator to predict death in ARDS patients.

Shifts in intestinal microbiota and improvement of sheep immune response to resist Salmonella infection using Toll-like receptor 4 (TLR4) overexpression. Front Microbiol 2023; 14:1075164. Abstract
Introduction Toll-like receptor 4 (TLR4) identifies Gram-negative bacteria or their products and plays a crucial role in host defense against invading pathogens. In the intestine, TLR4 recognizes bacterial ligands and interacts with the immune system. Although TLR4 signaling is a vital component of the innate immune system, the influence of TLR4 overexpression on innate immune response and its impact on the composition of the intestinal microbiota is unknown. Methods Here, we obtained macrophages from sheep peripheral blood to examine phagocytosis and clearance of Salmonella Typhimurium (S. Typhimurium) in macrophages. Meanwhile, we characterized the complex microbiota inhabiting the stools of TLR4 transgenic (TG) sheep and wild-type (WT) sheep using 16S ribosomal RNA (rRNA) deep sequencing. Results The results showed that TLR4 overexpression promoted the secretion of more early cytokines by activating downstream signaling pathways after stimulation by S. Typhimurium. Furthermore, diversity analysis demonstrated TLR4 overexpression increased microbial community diversity and regulated the composition of intestinal microbiota. More importantly, TLR4 overexpression adjusted the gut microbiota composition and maintained intestinal health by reducing the ratio of Firmicutes/Bacteroidetes and inflammation and oxidative stress-producing bacteria (Ruminococcaceae, Christensenellaceae) and upregulating the abundance of Bacteroidetes population and short-chain fatty acid (SCFA)-producing bacteria, including Prevotellaceae. These dominant bacterial genera changed by TLR4 overexpression revealed a close correlation with the metabolic pathways of TG sheep. Discussion Taken together, our findings suggested that TLR4 overexpression can counteract S. Typhimurium invasion as well as resist intestinal inflammation in sheep by regulating intestinal microbiota composition and enhancing anti-inflammatory metabolites.

Advances in Innate Immunity to Overcome Immune Rejection during Xenotransplantation. Cells 2022; 11:cells11233865. Abstract
Transplantation is an effective approach for treating end-stage organ failure. There has been a long-standing interest in xenotransplantation as a means of increasing the number of available organs. In the past decade, there has been tremendous progress in xenotransplantation accelerated by the development of rapid gene-editing tools and immunosuppressive therapy. Recently, the heart and kidney from pigs were transplanted into the recipients, which suggests that xenotransplantation has entered a new era. The genetic discrepancy and molecular incompatibility between pigs and primates results in barriers to xenotransplantation. An increasing body of evidence suggests that innate immune responses play an important role in all aspects of the xenogeneic rejection. Simultaneously, the role of important cellular components like macrophages, natural killer (NK) cells, and neutrophils, suggests that the innate immune response in the xenogeneic rejection should not be underestimated. Here, we summarize the current knowledge about the innate immune system in xenotransplantation and highlight the key issues for future investigations. A better understanding of the innate immune responses in xenotransplantation may help to control the xenograft rejection and design optimal combination therapies.

Abstract
Objective: To measure and analyze parameters of the three-dimensional (3D) model of the condylar movement envelope surface (ES) and provide a reference for the design of the temporomandibular prosthesis. Methods: Thirty-four healthy adults aged (25.4±2.8) years were recruited from the Department of Oral and Maxillofacial Surgery, Peking University School and Hospital of Stomatology as subjects. There were 9 males and 25 females, most of them were university students and others outside the university have received undergraduate education or above. Condylar movement ES were obtained using the previous method on the 3D trajectory of condyle. The simulations of condylar movement were projected according to opening movements, protrusion movements, and lateral movements respectively. The total area of the ES and the area proportions of models formed by above different mandibular movements were measured and calculated. The adults' head and maxillofacial 3D models reconstructed by cone beam CT were registered with ES in Geomagic Studio. The inner and outer poles of the condyle, the corrective sagittal axis of the ES, and the median sagittal plane (MSP) were calibrated in registration models using Geomagic Studio, and the parameters were measured as follows: the anteroposterior and medialateral diameters of the condyle, the anteroposterior diameters and the transverse diameters (anterior, middle and posterior parts) of the ES, the angles between the corrective sagittal axis of the ES and MSP (ES-MSP). Pearson correlation analysis was performed by SPSS 24.0. Results: The total area of the ES was (760±133) mm2, the opening movement part accounted for (63.3±15.2)%, the protrusion movement part accounted for (14.9±9.6)%, the lateral movement part accounted for (21.8±13.3)%. Parameter measurements were as follows: mediolateral diameters of condyle was (19.8±2.3) mm; anteroposterior diameter of the ES was (21.2±3.1) mm, the transverse diameters (anterior, middle and posterior parts) of the ES were (20.6±2.4), (20.4±2.4), (22.0±2.6) mm, respectively; the transverse diameters of the ES were about 2 mm larger than that of the condyle. The angle between the corrective sagittal axis of ES and the MSP was 6.8°±6.2°. The coefficient of variation (CV) in these parameters showed: CV of the transverse diameters (anterior, middle and posterior parts) of the ES and mediolateral diameter of the condyle were 0.98, 0.99, 0.93, respectively (P<0.001). CV of aera of ES and mediolateral diameter of the condyle was 0.64 (P=0.002). CV of aera of ES and anteroposterior diameter of ES was 0.62 (P=0.004). Conclusions: The 3D envelope surface model formed by mandibular opening movements accounted for the largest proportion of the ES. The corrective sagittal axis of the ES was at an angle to the MSP, the transverse diameters (anterior, middle and posterior parts) of the ES were approximately 2 mm larger than the mediolateral diameter of the condyle, the transverse diameters (anterior, middle and posterior parts) of the ES were highly positively correlated with the mediolateral diameter of the condyle.

Abstract
Kisspeptin (KP) is a major positive regulator of the hypothalamo-pituitary-gonadal axis and affects female reproductive cyclicity in mammals. It offers an attractive alternative strategy to control reproduction in fixed-time artificial insemination (FTAI) protocols. We aimed to evaluate the effects of different doses of kisspeptin-10 (KP-10) on sow reproductive performance in FTAI protocols. One hundred ninety-eight weaned sows were divided into three groups at random. A FTAI-GnRH group of sows (n = 98) received 100 µg (2 mL) gonadotropin-releasing hormone (GnRH; gonadorelin) by intramuscular injection at 96 h after weaning (t = 0 h); FTAI-KPL (KPL: low-dose KP-10, n = 50), and FTAI-KPH groups of sows (KPH: high-dose KP-10, n = 50) received 0.5 or 1 mg KP-10 (2 mL) respectively at 96 h after weaning. Sows were checked twice daily for oestrus. Ultrasonographic evaluations were performed to determine the follicular diameter and time of ovulation; blood samples were collected immediately before injection (t0 = 0 min) and at 15, 30, 45, 60, 75, 90 min, 24 and 48 h postinjection. Sows were inseminated at 112 and 132 h after weaning. The oestrus rates (96 vs 92%; 96 vs 88%) and weaning-to-oestrus intervals (98.9 vs 98.6 h; 98.9 vs 97.1 h) were not affected by treatment, but oestrus in the FTAI-KPL group was significantly longer than in the FTAI-GnRH group (38.7 vs 30.0 h; P < 0.05). The peak LH concentrations were 1.29 times greater than at t0 = 0 in the FTAI-GnRH group, and 1.45 and 1.44 times greater than at t0 = 0 in the FTAI-KPL and FTAI-KPH groups, respectively. Follicular diameters and pregnancy rates (86 vs 88%, 86 vs 80%, respectively) did not differ between the treatments. Moreover, the total numbers of piglets born and those born alive did not differ among the three groups. These findings suggested that 0.5 mg KP-10 given at 96 h after weaning could be used in FTAI programmes to manage batch farrowing in sows.

Abstract
OBJECTIVE To analyze and compare the epidemiological characteristics of imported malaria in Jiaozuo City before and after malaria elimination, so as to provide insights into the malaria surveillance during the post-elimination stage and prevention of re-establishment of imported malaria. METHODS Data pertaining to the epidemic situation and individual investigation of malaria in Jiaozuo City before (from 2010 to 2016) and after malaria elimination (from 2017 to November, 2020) were captured from the National Notifiable Disease Reporting System and the Information System for Parasitic Diseases Control and Prevention of Chinese Center for Disease Control and Prevention and were analyzed statistically. RESULTS A total of 74 imported malaria cases were reported in Jiaozuo City from 2010 to 2021. Imported cases were predominantly Plasmodium falciparum malaria cases in Jiaozuo City before and after malaria elimination, and there was no significant difference in the proportion of malaria parasite species (χ2 = 0.234, P > 0.05). The imported malaria cases was predominantly reported in Wuzhi County, and was identified in overseas male farmers and businessmen at ages of 20 to 59 years, while the greatest number of imported malaria cases was reported in June and December before and after malaria elimination. The imported malaria cases predominantly acquired malaria parasite infections in sub-Saharan African countries; however, the proportion of imported malaria cases returning from Southeast Asian counties increased after malaria elimination than before malaria elimination (χ2 = 5.989, P < 0.05). The longest duration from onset to definitive diagnosis of malaria reduced from 27 days before malaria elimination to 18 days after malaria elimination, and the median duration reduced from 3 days to 2 days, while the proportion of definitive diagnosis of malaria increased from 60.47% before malaria elimination to 83.87% after malaria elimination (χ2 = 4.724, P < 0.05). In addition, the proportion of malaria cases definitively diagnosed and reported by medical institutions increased after malaria elimination than before malaria elimination (χ2 = 5.406, P < 0.05). CONCLUSIONS The imported malaria patients were predominantly P. falciparum malaria cases in Jiaozuo City during 2010 to 2021, and the patient's medical care-seeking awareness and medical staff's diagnosis and treatment ability have improved after malaria elimination. It is necessary to strengthen and improve malaria surveillance and response system and prevent the re-establishment of overseas imported malaria.

Abstract
The physiological role of estrogen in the female endometrium is well established. On the basis of responses to steroid hormones (progesterone, androgen, and estrogen), the endometrium is considered to have proliferative and secretory phases. Estrogen can act in the endometrium by interacting with estrogen receptors (ERs) to induce mucosal proliferation during the proliferative phase and progesterone receptor (PR) synthesis, which prepare the endometrium for the secretory phase. Mouse knockout studies have shown that ER expression, including ERα, ERβ, and G-protein-coupled estrogen receptor (GPER) in the endometrium is critical for normal menstrual cycles and subsequent pregnancy. Incorrect expression of ERs can produce many diseases that can cause endometriosis, endometrial hyperplasia (EH), and endometrial cancer (EC), which affect numerous women of reproductive age. ERα promotes uterine cell proliferation and is strongly associated with an increased risk of EC, while ERβ has the opposite effects on ERα function. GPER is highly expressed in abnormal EH, but its expression in EC patients is paradoxical. Effective treatments for endometrium-related diseases depend on understanding the physiological function of ERs; however, much less is known about the signaling pathways through which ERs functions in the normal endometrium or in endometrial diseases. Given the important roles of ERs in the endometrium, we reviewed the published literature to elaborate the regulatory role of estrogen and its nuclear and membrane-associated receptors in maintaining the function of endometrium and to provide references for protecting female reproduction. Additionally, the role of drugs such as tamoxifen, raloxifene, fulvestrant and G-15 in the endometrium are also described. Future studies should focus on evaluating new therapeutic strategies that precisely target specific ERs and their related growth factor signaling pathways.

Abstract
Estrogen mainly binds to estrogen receptors (ERs) to regulate menstrual cycles and reproduction. The expression of ERalpha (ERα), ERbeta (ERβ), and G-protein-coupled estrogen receptor (GPER) mRNA could be detected in ovary, suggesting that they play an important role in estrogen signal transduction in ovary. And many studies have revealed that abnormal expression of estrogen and its receptors is closely related to ovarian disease or malignant tumors. With the continuous development and research of animal models, tissue-specific roles of both ERα and ERβ have been demonstrated in animals, which enable people to have a deeper understanding of the potential role of ER in regulating female reproductive diseases. Nevertheless, our current understanding of ERs expression and function in ovarian disease is, however, incomplete. To elucidate the biological mechanism behind ERs in the ovary, this review will focus on the role of ERα and ERβ in polycystic ovary syndrome (PCOS), ovarian cancer and premature ovarian failure (POF) and discuss the major challenges of existing therapies to provide a reference for the treatment of estrogen target tissue ovarian diseases.

Abstract
There are many organochlorine pollutants in the environment, which can be directly or indirectly exposed to by mothers, and as estrogen endocrine disruptors can cause damage to the lactation capacity of the mammary gland. In addition, because breast milk contains a lot of nutrients, it is the most important food source for new-born babies. If mothers are exposed to organochlorine pesticides (OCPs), the lipophilic organochlorine contaminants can accumulate in breast milk fat and be passed to the infant through breast milk. Therefore, it is necessary to investigate organochlorine contaminants in human milk to estimate the health risks of these contaminants to breastfed infants. In addition, toxic substances in the mother can also be passed to the fetus through the placenta, which is also something we need to pay attention to. This article introduces several types of OCPs, such as dichlorodiphenyltrichloroethane (DDT), methoxychlor (MXC), hexachlorocyclohexane (HCH), endosulfan, chlordane, heptachlorand and hexachlorobenzene (HCB), mainly expounds their effects on women's lactation ability and infant health, and provides reference for maternal and infant health. In addition, some measures and methods for the control of organochlorine pollutants are also described here.

Abstract
Timed artificial insemination (TAI) is an efficient reproductive technology in batch farrowing production that aids management in pig farms. However, the effect of TAI on the reproduction performance is still controversial. This study aimed to evaluate the effects of two TAI protocols on the reproductive performance of primiparous sows. A total of 332 weaned sows were randomly allocated into three treatments. Sows assigned to Control (n = 110) were untreated and inseminated on each day in oestrus after weaning. Sows assigned to eG-TAI (n = 112) received equine chorionic gonadotropin (eCG) 24 h after weaning and gonadotropin-releasing hormone (Gonadorelin: GnRH) at oestrus, and were inseminated at 8 and 32 h later if oestrus at 0800, or 16 and 40 h later if oestrus at 1600. Sows assigned to 2e-TAI (n = 110) received eCG and GnRH 24 h and 96 h after weaning, respectively, and were inseminated 16 and 40 h after GnRH administration. Sows showing oestrus at GnRH administration or 64 h after were inseminated immediately, for a total of three inseminations. Ultrasonographic evaluations were performed to determine the follicular diameter and time of ovulation. Most sows in the 2e-TAI and eG-TAI groups ovulated 0-48 h after the GnRH injection. Our results indicated that oestrus rate within seven days after weaning in the experimental groups was higher, and weaning-to-oestrus interval was shorter than in the control group (99.3 h vs 113.5 h, P < 0.05). The breeding and farrowing rates in the experimental groups were significantly higher than in the control group (P < 0.05), while the numbers of total born, live-born and stillborn were not different among the three groups (Control: 12.7, 11.6 and 1.1; 2e-TAI: 12.4, 11.3 and 1.0; eG-TAI: 12.0, 11.4 and 0.4, respectively). These results indicated that TAI could ensure a high farrowing rate in primiparous sows under batch farrowing management.

Abstract
Ovarian cancer is a heterogeneous disease and is also the major cause of death among women from gynecologic malignancies. A combination of surgery and chemotherapy is the major therapy for ovarian cancer. Unfortunately, despite good response rates to initial surgery and chemotherapy, most patients relapse and have a generally poor survival rate. The present research sheds light on the therapeutic effects of multiple natural products in patients with ovarian cancer. Notably, these natural ingredients do not have adverse effects on healthy cells and tissues, indicating that natural products can serve as a safe alternative therapy for ovarian cancer. Trans-3,4,5′-Trihydroxystibene (resveratrol) is a natural product that is commonly found in the human diet and that has been shown to have anticancer effects on various human cancer cells. This review summarizes current knowledge regarding the progress of resveratrol against tumor cell proliferation, metastasis, apoptosis induction, autophagy, sensitization, and antioxidation as well as anti-inflammation. It also provides information regarding the role of resveratrol analogues in ovarian cancer. A better understanding of the role of resveratrol in ovarian cancer may provide a new array for the prevention and therapy of ovarian cancer.

Abstract
Objective: To investigate the physical indices and growth status of preterm children aged 0 to 4 years with different birth weight. Methods: Following the real world research approach, the current study retrospectively collected e-chart information of 8 496 preterm children from the child health care system of the Children's Hospital of Chongqing Medical University from December 2010 to December 2017, with 203 123 full-term children followed up during the same period as controls. Premature children were divided into normal birth weight (NBW) group, low birth weight (LBW) group, and very low birth weight (VLBW) group based on their birth weights. The weight and length development within 48 months of age of preterm boys and girls in each group were measured and recorded to establish a numerical table and analyze the growth levels, growth rate, and proportionality. The t-test or chi-square test was used for between-group comparison. Results: Of the 8 496 preterm children, 4 839 were girls and 3 657 boys, including 525 in the VLBW group, with an average birth weight of (1.28±0.14) kg, 3 862 in the LBW group, with an average birth weight of (2.07±0.28) kg, and 4 109 in the NBW group, with an average birth weight of (2.86±0.35) kg. The weight at the actual age of 2-<3 months ((5.61±0.96) vs. (5.64±0.78) kg in boys, (5.11±0.67) vs. (5.18±0.71) kg in girls) and the length at the actual age of 8-<10 months ((70.3±2.4) vs. (70.6±2.4) cm in boys, (68.9±2.2) vs. (68.9±2.4) cm in girls) in the NBW group reached the average weight and length of full-term children. The difference of physical growth before 24 months of age between LBW and control group decreased as children age, with that of LBW group approaches the average of full-term children after 24 months of age, with a weight difference of 0.64-0.95 kg and height difference of 1.3-1.7 cm. The weight and height of the VLBW group were lower than those of full-term infants (2.80-2.86 kg and 3.3-4.3 cm, respectively) at 48 months of age. During 2-12 months of age, the corresponding values of the VLBW group were higher than that of the LBW and NBW groups by 0.35 kg and 0.71 kg, respectively. However, the corresponding values of the VLBW group were lower than that of the LBW and NBW groups(0.64 kg and 0.76 kg at 0-2 months of age, 1.04 kg and 1.49 kg at 12-48 months of age, respectively). The rates of delayed development, underweight, and emaciation were the highest in the VLBW group (all P<0.01), while the rates of overweight and obesity were the highest in the NBW group, with that of the VLBW group being lower than LBW group (P<0.01) at the age of 24-<36 months. Conclusions: Prior to 4 years of age, the time for preterm children to reach the average physical indices of full-term children differ by birth weights, hence warranting further examination of the corrected gestational age for preterm children. Normal birth weight preterm children present with the highest incidence of overweight and obesity and very low birth weight preterm children present with the highest incidence of growth disorders, marking both groups at high risks of malnutrition.

Abstract
As an important indicator of sexual maturity of hens, age at first egg (AFE) is significantly associated with reproduction performance. In this study, 400 hens were divided into 6 groups based on AFE to analyze the difference of reproduction performance, reproduction hormone levels and the characterization of the hypothalamo-pituitary-gonadal axis in chickens. The results showed that the egg production of the hens in the late-maturing groups was significantly lower than that of the ones in other groups and the precocious hens had a lower egg production rate. The hens in late-maturing group had a lower fertility rate, LH levels and shorter duration of peak of egg production (PEP), the precocious hens had lower PRL levels. In addition, the characterization of the hypothalamo-pituitary-gonadal axis showed that the individuals with normal AFE had higher GNRH, GNRHR, ESR1, KITLG, and CYP11A1 expression levels than late-maturing and precocious individuals, which indicated that the chickens with normal AFE advantages on reproduction regulation system.

Abstract
Female infertility is mainly caused by ovulation disorders, which affect female reproduction and pregnancy worldwide, with polycystic ovary syndrome (PCOS) being the most prevalent of these. PCOS is a frequent endocrine disease that is associated with abnormal function of the female sex hormone estrogen and estrogen receptors (ERs). Estrogens mediate genomic effects through ERα and ERβ in target tissues. The G-protein-coupled estrogen receptor (GPER) has recently been described as mediating the non-genomic signaling of estrogen. Changes in estrogen receptor signaling pathways affect cellular activities, such as ovulation; cell cycle phase; and cell proliferation, migration, and invasion. Over the years, some selective estrogen receptor modulators (SERMs) have made substantial strides in clinical applications for subfertility with PCOS, such as tamoxifen and clomiphene, however the role of ER in PCOS still needs to be understood. This article focuses on the recent progress in PCOS caused by the abnormal expression of estrogen and ERs in the ovaries and uterus, and the clinical application of related targeted small-molecule drugs.

Abstract
Objective: To investigate the spectrum and antimicrobial resistance of major pathogens causing nosocomial infections in China, 2018. Methods: Non-duplicated nosocomial cases as well as pathogens causing bloodstream infections (BSI), hospital-acquired pneumonia (HAP) and intra-abdominal infections (IAI) from 11 teaching hospitals across China were collected. The minimum inhibitory concentrations (MICs) of clinically significant strains were determined by agar dilution method or broth microdilution method. The Clinical and Laboratory Standards Institute (CLSI) M100-S29 criteria were used for interpretation, and the WHONET-5.6 software was used in data analysis. Results: A total of 1 590 cases were collected, including 831 cases from BSI, 450 cases from HAP and 309 cases from IAI. The most prevalent pathogens causing BSI were Escherichia coli (29.2%, 243/831), Klebsiella pneumoniae (16.2%, 135/831) and Staphylococcus aureus (10.1%, 84/831); the most prevalent pathogens causing IAI were E. coli (26.2%, 81/309), Enterococcus faecium (15.5%, 48/309) and K. pneumoniae (13.3%, 41/309); while Acinetobacter baumanii (24.7%, 111/450), Pseudomonas aeruginosa (20.7%, 93/450) and K. pneumoniae (16.2%, 73/450) were dominated in HAP. All S. aureus were susceptible to tigecycline, linezolid, daptomycin and glycopeptides; 77.8% (105/135) of S. aureus strains were susceptible to ceftaroline. Methicillin-resistant S. aureus (MRSA) accounted for 29.6% (40/135) of all the S. aureus, and was lower than the accounted rate of methicillin-resistant coagulase-negative Staphylococcus (MRCNS) (83.7%, 41/49). One E. faecium strain (1.1%, 1/95) resistant to vacomycin and teicoplanin and one E. faecalis strain (2.3%, 1/43) resistant to linezolid was found. The prevalence of extended-spectrum β-lactamase (ESBL) was 56.1% (193/344) in E. coli and 22.1% (55/249) in K. pneumonia; the rate of carbapenem resistant E. coli and K. pneumonia was 4.1% (14/344) and 22.9% (57/249), respectively; the percentage of ceftazidime/avibactam resistant E. coli and K. pneumonia was 2.3% (8/344) and 2.0% (5/249), respectively; the percentage of colistin resistant E. coli and K. pneumonia was 1.5% (5/344) and 7.6% (19/249), respectively; no E. coli and K. pneumonia strains were found resistant to tigecycline. The rate of carbapenem resistant A. baumanii and P. aeruginosa were 78.9% (146/185) and 36.7% (66/180), respectively. A. baumanii showed low susceptibility to the antimicrobial agents except colistin (99.5%, 184/185) and tigecycline (91.4%, 169/185). Colistin, amikacin and ceftazidime/avibactam demonstrated high antibacterial activity against P. aeruginosa with susceptility rate of 100% (180/180), 93.3% (168/180) and 85.6% (154/180), respectively. Conclusions: Nosocomial Gram-negative pathogens show high susceptibilities to tigecycline, colistin and ceftazidime/avibactam in vitro. Antimicrobial resistance in A. baumannii is a serious problem. The prevalence of carbapenem-resistant Enterobacteriaceae has increased, which should be monitored continuously in China.

Abstract
1. H-FABP (heart-type fatty acid-binding protein) is an important fatty acid-binding protein that participates in the metabolism and intracellular transportation of lipids. This study was designed to study the H-FABP gene expression and genetic association with meat quality traits in domestic pigeons.2. The spatio-temporal expression patterns showed that H-FABP was widely expressed in all eleven tissues in birds from hatching to 4 weeks of age, and the expression level in the liver was the highest, and spleen and subcutaneous fat showed relatively high levels at all time points, and increased markedly as squabs became older.3. Nine novel SNPs were found; three of them (g.42 C > T and g.123 C > T in exon 1 and g.3128 C > T in exon 2) were synonymous mutations, and six of them (g.3304 T > C, g.3305 G > A, g.3313A>G, g.3343 C > T, g.3372A>C, g.3410 T > C in exon 3) were located in the 3' untranslated region (UTR). In addition, four haplotypes and six diplotypes were formed and showed weak linkage disequilibrium. Association analysis showed that in the SNP of g.3305 G > A, the AB genotype showed higher (P < 0.05) inosinic acid concentrations in breast muscle than the BB genotype. In the SNP of g.3313A>G, the AA and AB genotypes showed significantly higher (P < 0.01) inosinic acid concentrations than the BB genotype, AA showed the highest intramuscular fat content, and the relative mRNA expression level of the AA genotype was the highest (P < 0.05).4. Association analysis of diplotypes showed no correlation with meat quality traits. Moreover, correlation analysis indicated that the H-FABP mRNA expression level was tightly related to intramuscular fat content (P < 0.01).5. This study suggested that the H-FABP gene may be a candidate gene in marker-assisted selection of pigeons for high-quality meat.

Abstract
Objective: To report the clinical and pathological features and surgical treatment of the linear nevus sebaceous syndrome. Methods: It was a retrospective case series study. The clinical records of 11 patients (14 eyes) who were diagnosed as linear nevus sebaceous syndrome between April 2009 and February 2018 at Beijing Tongren Hospital were analyzed. Data collected included sex, age, clinical manifestations, disease site, pathological features, surgical treatment and therapeutic effects. Results: There were six males and five females, aged 6 months to 7 years (mean, 2.8 years). The nevus sebaceous was located at the head (9 patients), face (5 patients) and neck (3 patients). The most common ocular manifestations were blepharocoloboma (13 eyes) and external ocular mass (9 eyes). Surgical treatment was performed in 9 patients (11 eyes), including lid reconstruction in all these eyes, corneal and conjunctival mass resection in four patients (4 eyes), eyelid tumor resection in 5 patients (5 eyes), and symblepharon separation and conjunctival sac reconstruction in 3 patients (5 eyes). Pathological examinations of the external ocular, corneal and conjunctival masses (6 eyes) confirmed the diagnosis of complex choristoma. All operated patients had improved appearance. Conclusions: Linear nevus sebaceous syndrome has characteristic cutaneous lesions and ocular manifestations. Histopathologically, all epibulbar lesions prove to be complex choristomas. The appearance of patients with linear nevus sebaceous syndrome can be significantly improved by oculoplastic surgery. (Chin J Ophthalmol, 2020, 56: 846-852).

Enhanced transforming growth factor-beta signaling and fibrosis in the pectoralis major muscle of broiler chickens affected by wooden breast myopathy. Poult Sci 2020; 100:100804. [PMID: 33516474 PMCID: PMC7936165 DOI: 10.1016/j.psj.2020.10.058] [Citation(s) in RCA: 7] [Impact Index Per Article: 1.8] [Reference Citation Analysis] [Abstract] [Key Words] [MESH Headings] [Track Full Text] [Download PDF] [Figures] [Journal Information] [Subscribe] [Scholar Register] [Received: 08/06/2020] [Revised: 09/24/2020] [Accepted: 10/20/2020] [Indexed: 02/06/2023] Open
Abstract
Fibrosis has also been recorded as a prominent pathological feature within wooden breast (WB) myopathy of broiler chickens. This study was conducted to evaluate the accumulation of fibril collagen, deposition of the extracellular matrix (ECM) components, and the underlying mechanism mediating the pathogenic fibrotic process in the pectoralis major (PM) muscle of WB-affected birds. Broiler chickens were categorized into the control and WB groups based on the evaluation of myopathic lesions. Results indicated that the total content and area of collagen in cross-sections of the PM muscle, as well as the augmented expression of collagen-I and fibronectin in the ECM, were greatly increased in birds with WB. Wooden breast myopathy upregulated expressions of transforming growth factor-beta (TGF-β) and the phosphorylation of Smad 2 and 3, thereby activating TGF-β-mediated Smad signaling pathway, which further enhanced the transcription of profibrotic mediators. In addition, regulators involved in collagen biosynthesis and cross-linking including prolyl 4-hydroxylase, lysyl oxidase, lysyl hydroxylase, and decorin were increased in the WB muscle. Finally, the expressions of both matrix metalloproteinases (MMP) and tissue inhibitor of metalloproteinases (TIMP) were increased in the WB muscle, which might be related with reduced ECM remodeling. Overall, WB myopathy induces severe fibrosis by enhancing ECM deposition and collagen cross-linking in the PM muscle of broiler chickens, possibly via the activation of TGF-β signaling and the dysregulation of the MMP and TIMP system.

[Three-dimensional imaging study on the anatomical morphology of trabecular bone of the condyle based on the distribution of volume of interests]. ZHONGHUA KOU QIANG YI XUE ZA ZHI = ZHONGHUA KOUQIANG YIXUE ZAZHI = CHINESE JOURNAL OF STOMATOLOGY 2020; 55:765-771. Abstract
Objective: To analyze the anatomical morphological characteristics of the trabecular bone of human mandibular condyle by observing the distribution of volume of interests (VOI). Methods: The micro-CT images of a right condyle specimen of a 61-year-old adult male was analyzed in this study. The cylindrical VOI with both diameter and height of 2 mm were arranged, according to a certain pattern, as many as possible at various levels within the trabecular bone of the condyle. Each VOI had no intersection area. The selected VOI were divided into 5 parts: medial part, middle part, lateral part, anterior part and posterior part, with 6 layers from top to bottom. And the distribution of the overall anatomical morphological characteristics of three-dimensional (3D) images of the trabecular bone of the condyle was analyzed by using seven morphological parameters of each VOI, i.e. bone mineral density (BMD), bone volume/total volume (BV/TV), bone surface area/bone volume (BS/BV), trabecular thickness (Tb.Th), trabecular bone number (Tb.N), trabecular spacing (Tb.Sp) and trabecular bone pattern factor (Tb.Pf). Results: In the present study, totally 34 VOI were selected from the condyle specimen. The morphological distribution of the VOI was uneven in the 3D structure of the trabecular bone of the human condyle. BMD, BV/TV, Tb.N and Tb.Th were much higher at the middle part, while showed the smallest at the medial part. The anterior part demonstrated much higher parameters than the posterior part at the first, second, fifth and sixth layers, respectively, however, the posterior part showed much higher parameters than the anterior part at the third and fourth layers, respectively. The BMD was much higher at the first [(332.66±97.11) mg/cm3] and sixth [(255.79±45.68) mg/cm3] layers, while the lowest at the second layer [(255.79±41.06) mg/cm3]. The BV/TV and Tb.N were much higher at the first layer, with the lowest at the fifth layer. The Tb.Th at the first layer [(0.11±0.03) mm] was much higher than the others, which were similarly lower. The BS/BV, Tb.Sp and Tb.Pf were lower at the first layer and much higher at the medial and lateral parts, while were lower at the middle and anterior parts. The posterior part demonstrated much higher BS/BV, Tb.Sp and Tb.Pf than the anterior part at the first, fifth and sixth layers, respectively. However, the anterior part showed much higher scores than the posterior part at the third and fourth layers, respectively. The ANOVA results showed that the 7 morphological parameters of VOI were not statistically significant amongst the 6 layers (P>0.05). However, the 6 out of the 7 parameters, i.e. BV/TV, BS/BV, Tb.Th, Tb.N, Tb.Sp and Tb.Pf, were statistically significant amongst the five parts (P<0.05), while the only parameter of BMD was not statistically significant (P>0.05). Conclusions: The anatomical distribution characteristics of the trabecular bone of condyle were analyzed by using 3D imaging measurement based on the VOI. The results showed uneven distributions and indicated that the method of dividing the trabecular bone of mandibular condyle into VOI sets, which accorded with its specific anatomical characteristics, was feasible for further reference.

Abstract
OBJECTIVE To evaluate the effectiveness of Oncomelania snails control following the implementation of integrated schistosomiasis control measures in river channels connecting the Yangtze River in endemic areas of Nanjing City. METHODS The river channels connecting the Yangtze River with snails in Nanjing City were selected as the study pilots. The integrated schistosomiasis control measures implemented in the study pilots were investigated by means of retrospective analyses and field surveys from 1998 to 2019, and the effectiveness of snail control was evaluated. RESULTS Integrated control measures with emphases on environmental improvements including water resource projects for schistosomiasis control were implemented in the study pilots during the period from 1998 to 2019, including river bank concretion with 84.51 km in length, marshland cutting and dredging with 50.41 km in length, building 2 sluices and 3 overflow dams, digging one floodway and snail control with chemical treatment that covered an area of 3 370.80 hm2. No Schistosoma japonicum infection had been detected in snails since the completion of the integrated control measures. In addition, snails had been eliminated in 6 river channels connecting the Yangtze River until 2019, with the snail habitats reducing from 214.33 hm2 to 52.22 hm2 in 10 river channels connecting the Yangtze River and the snail density reducing to below 0.1 snails/0.1 m2 in snail-breeding river channels connecting the Yangtze River. CONCLUSIONS The integrated schistosomiasis control measures with emphases on environmental improvements may effectively control snail breeding and spread in rivers connecting the Yangtze River in endemic areas of schistosomiasis; however, the maintenance of the project and snail surveillance and control should be intensified following the completion of the integrated schistosomiasis control measures.

Abstract
Wooden breast (WB) has emerged as a dramatically increasing myopathy in the poultry industry over the past few years. The objective of this study was to investigate the incidence of WB in a Chinese commercial broiler processing plant, and the consequences on quality attributes, textural properties, and sensory traits. A total of 1,135 breast fillets were collected at the deboning line and assigned to normal, mild, moderate, and severe WB categories by tactile evaluation. The proportion affected by WB was approximately 61.9%. WB fillets appeared heavier and thicker than normal fillets. The degree of WB myopathy was highly correlated with fillet weight and thickness. The meat quality characteristics of cooking loss and purge loss increased along with increasing severity of WB myopathy. Compression tests of raw meat revealed higher cutting strength and shear values for WB. In cooked meat, only severe WB fillets exhibited elevated hardness and chewiness. Finally, moderate and severe WB fillets affected the sensory evaluation by consumers owing to their impaired general appearance, texture, and drip loss. The results suggested that a high proportion of WB broiler fillets would cause detrimental losses to the poultry meat retailing and processing industry.

Abstract
The objective of this study was to investigate the effects of preslaughter shackling on stress, postmortem glycolysis, meat quality, water distribution, and protein structures of pectoralis majors. Before slaughter, Arbor Acres broilers (n = 105, 42 days old, 2.0 to 2.5 kg) were randomly categorized into 3 treatment groups: (I) control group without shackling (NS); (II) 2.5 min shackling (SS); (III) 4.5 min shackling (LS). Each treatment group consisted of 5 replicates with 7 broilers each. Results indicated that preslaughter shackling increased (P < 0.05) plasma corticosterone and adrenocorticotropic hormone concentrations in comparison with the control group. Antemortem shackling increased (P < 0.05) activity of glycogen phosphorylase and phosphofructokinase-1 (PFK-1) accompanying with rapid glycolysis and pH decline at early postmortem. LS treatment led to myosin denaturation, decreased (P < 0.05) α-helix content, and increased (P < 0.05) β-sheet structures proportion in the myofibrillar proteins. Furthermore, meat from LS treatment had higher (P < 0.05) lightness, redness, and poorer water-holding capacity. These results indicated that the longer shackling duration (4.5 min) increased stress and the rate of glycolysis, causing myosin denaturation and changes of the secondary structure in the myofibrillar proteins, which aggravated the deterioration of meat quality.

Abstract
Recent studies have shown that N-carbamylglutamate (NCG) and arginine (ARG) supplementation improves reproductive performance in livestock. The objectives of the present study were to evaluate the effects of NCG and ARG on GT1-7 cell gonadotrophin-releasing hormone (GnRH) secretion, gene expression and cell proliferation. GT1-7 cells were treated in vitro with different concentrations of NCG (0-1.0mM) or ARG (0-4.0mM) in serum-free medium for 12 or 24h. For GnRH secretion and cell proliferation, GT1-7 cells were more sensitive to NCG than ARG. NCG treatment after 12h increased cell numbers and inhibited GnRH secretion in a dose-dependent manner (P<0.05), although there was no significant effect of NCG on these parameters after 24h culture. ARG treatment decreased GnRH secretion after 24h (P<0.05), whereas it had no effect after 12h. GT1-7 cells express GnRH, Kiss-1 metastasis-suppressor (Kiss1), G-protein coupled receptor 54 (GPR54), neuronal nitric oxide synthase (nNOS) and estrogen receptor α (ERα) genes. High concentrations of NCG (1.0mM) and ARG (4.0mM) inhibited (P<0.05) GnRH and nNOS mRNA abundance in GT1-7 cells. ARG treatment decreased Kiss1 and increased ERα mRNA abundance. Thus, high concentrations of NCG (1.0mM) and ARG (4.0mM) may act both directly and indirectly to regulate GnRH neuron function by downregulating genes related to GnRH synthesis and secretion to slow GnRH production while stimulating GT1-7 cell proliferation.

Abstract
Objective:Since bacterial infection is one of the common pathogenic factors lead to chronic rhinosinusitis (CRS), our study is designed to investigate the prevalence and antibiotic resistance of nasal colonized bacteria in patients with CRS, and to analyze the correlation between nasal colonized bacteria and pathogenesis of CRS. Method:Nasal vestibule samples collected from 200 patients with CRS were automatically inoculated on to various bacterial culture medium, cultured by WaspLab microbiology automated system, potential pathogenic bacterial colonies grew on agar plates were then examined, identified by matrix-assisted laser desorption ionization-time of flight mass spectrometry, and analyzed their antibiotic-resistant phenotype by antibiotic susceptibility testing. Result:Two hundred and seventy-five bacterial strains of nasal colonization were isolated, including coagulase-negative Staphylococci, Staphylococcus aureus, Streptococcus pneumonia, Moraxella catarrhalis, Haemophilus influenza, Pseudomonas aeruginosa, and Enterobacteriaceae such as Escherichia coli and Klebsiella pneumoniae. All strains displayed various degrees of antimicrobial resistance among children and adult patients, or among patients with and without endoscopic sinus surgery. Conclusion:The constitution of nasal colonized commensal bacteria in patients with CRS was partially similar to that of pathogenic bacteria causing CRS. They may form a reservoir of antimicrobial resistant pathogens, which would transform into pathogenic bacteria causing CRS under certain conditions. Screening of nasal colonized bacteria may represent an alternative approach for diagnosis and treatment of CRS.

Abstract
OBJECTIVE To study the clinical characteristics of mandibular movement and masticatory muscle function in preoperative and postoperative patients with unilateral mandibular tumors in the region of mandibular body and ramus by combining digital mandibular movement records with electromyography, and to preliminarily explore the relationship and mechanism between movement and masticatory muscle function. METHODS Six preoperative patients with tumor in unilateral body and ramus of mandible were included, and three postoperative patients with unilateral segmental resection and reconstruction of mandibular bone were included. The mandibular movement recording system and surface electromyography system were used to collect the movement trajectory of the patients' mandibular marginal movement and chewing movement, and the surface electromyography of bilateral masseter and temporalis was recorded concurrently. The surface electromyography of bilateral masseter and temporalis was collected when the patients were at relaxation and at maximal voluntary clenching (MVC). The motion trajectory was observed on the digital virtual model, and the motion amplitude and direction of mandibular marginal movements were analyzed. The characteristics of masticatory electromyogram (EMG) activity in affected and unaffected sides at relaxation, MVC and bilateral mastication were analyzed, and the asymmetry indexes and activity indexes were calculated. RESULTS The preoperative mean maximum opening of the patients was (35.20±6.87) mm. Three patients had mild mouth opening limitation, and all the patients' mouth opening trajectory was skewed to the affected side. During lateral movements, the mean range of motion of the affected side [(10.34±1.27) mm] and that of the healthy side [(6.94±2.41) mm] were significantly different. The maximum opening of the postoperative patients was (30.65±17.32) mm, and the mandibular marginal movement characteristics were consistent with those of the patients before surgery. During MVC in the preoperative patients, the median EMG activities of the masseter muscle [44.20 (5.70, 197.90) μV] and the temporalis muscle [42.15 (22.90, 155.00) μV] on the affected side were slightly lower than those of the masseter [45.60 (7.50, 235.40) μV] and the temporalis muscle [63.30 (44.10, 126.70) μV] on the healthy side. In the postoperative patients, individualized changes occurred. Some patients suffered from weakened electromyographic activity on the affected side, while some other ones showed hyperelectromyographic activity on the affected side. CONCLUSION Both benign and malignant tumors as well as their surgery can cause abnormal mandibular movements and change of electromyographic activity of bilateral masseter and temporalis muscles.

Abstract
Objective: To evaluate the high-risk histopathologic features of retinoblastoma eyes enucleated as primary treatment. Methods: Retrospective case series study. An analysis was carried out on the high-risk histopathologic features of 482 primarily enucleated retinoblastoma eyes in Beijing Tongren Eye Center during December 2011 and December 2016. The high-risk histopathologic features included post lamina cribrosa invasion, massive choroidal invasion, anterior segment invasion and extraocular invasion. According to the neovascularization of iris (NVI) in the tissue specimen, the patients were divided into the NVI positive group and negative group. The rates of high-risk histopathologic features in the NVI positive group and negative group were analyzed using the chi-square test. Results: Among 482 children with retinoblastoma, 280 (58.1%) were males and 202 (41.9%) were females. The median age at enucleation surgery was 24 months (range, 1-84 months). Of the 482 primarily enucleated eyes, 184 (38.2%) were classified as high-risk histopathologic features, including 148 (30.7%) with post lamina cribrosa invasion, 15 (3.1%) with optic nerve transection invasion, 66 (13.7%) with massive choroidal invasion, 35 (7.3%) with anterior segment invasion, and 5 (1.0%) with extraocular invasion. NVI was detected in 257 (53.3%) cases and there was a significant relation between high-risk histopathologic features and NVI. The rate of high-risk histopathologic features was significantly higher in the NVI positive group (123 cases, 47.9%) than the NVI negative group (61 cases, 27.1%) (χ(2)=21.883, P=0.001). The rate of post lamina cribrosa invasion was significantly higher in the NVI positive group (110 cases, 42.8%) than the NVI negative group (38 cases, 16.9%) (χ(2)=37.860, P=0.001). Conclusions: In this large sample of patients, about 1/3 of retinoblastoma eyes has high-risk histopathologic features. The NVI positive retinoblastoma is more likely to have high-risk histopathologic features or post lamina cribrosa invasion than the NVI negative retinoblastoma. Abstract
Objective: To calculate the three-dimensional trajectory and motion morphology of condyle by combining the trajectory of the mandible movement and the three-dimensional model of the mandible. Methods: Cone beam CT (CBCT) scanning was performed on the volunteer. The mandible three-dimensional model was built with image data transferred to the graphical user interface of the computer workstation. The novel virtual articulator PN300 recorded the three-dimensional trajectory of mandible. All these data were transferred to software system of computer workstation calculating the three-dimensional trajectory of condyle. The motion morphology of condyle was simulated by merging function surface at each point. Results: When the mandible moved in an opening process, the recorded data was calculated and it was shown that: the condylar functional surface moved moved forward and downward inward in advance, and in the process of continuously increasing the opening degree, the function faced the front upper inner side. The straight-line distance between the position and the final position was 8.34 mm. During the forward movement of the mandible, the coracoid process slided forward downward and inward with a sliding distance of 8.64 mm. During lateral movement, the range of the working side condyle function surface motion was small, only slight rotation, the maximum range of motion was 1.97 mm; in the process of row side movement, the non-working condyle function surface had a larger movement range than the working side, the movement direction was the front lower inner side, and the movement distance was 7.65 mm. Conclusions: The novel virtual articulator PN300 and digital technology can achieve the accurate measurement of three-dimensional trajectory of the condyle, and furthermore simulate the motion morphology of the condyle.

Abstract
Objective: To study the clinicopathologic characteristics and differential diagnosis of mammary myofibroblastoma. Methods: Nine cases of mammary myofibroblastoma diagnosed between 2006 and 2017 were collected from the Department of Pathology, Fudan University Shanghai Cancer Center. Clinical and histopathologic features of these nine cases were examined, immunohistochemical staining was performed, FISH analysis for the detection of FOXO1 gene was performed in one case, and follow-up data were also collected. Results: There were seven female and two male patients, with a mean age of 54 years, median age of 50 years (ranging from 40 to 83 years). Four lesions each were located in the left and right breast, and one was in the left subaxillary accessory breast tissue. Clinically, 8 patients presented with a breast mass, 3 of which accompanied with pain. All of the tumors were well-demarcated grossly with a mean diameter of 2.5 cm. Microscopically, there were no entrapped ductal or lobular structures within the tumor. Seven tumors were classic type, which were composed of bland-looking spindle neoplastic cells without mitoses, arranging in intersecting fascicles, and interrupted by thick hyalinized collagen bundles. One case was of epithelioid variant, demonstrating epithelioid neoplastic cells diffusely arranged or in cluster. The other one case was mixed spindle and epithelioid-cell type. Atypical tumor cells were observed in 3 cases. Immunohistochemically, tumor cells were diffusely positive for desmin (9/9) and CD34 (6/9), as well as ER (7/7), PR (6/6) and bcl-2 (3/3). SMA (4/7) and Calponin (1/2) were focally or partially positive in some cases. H-caldesmon (1/2) was weakly positive and epithelial markers were negative. Ki-67 proliferation index was low (<10%). There was no monoallelic loss of FOXO1/13q14 loci in the detected case according to FISH analysis. Follow-up data were available for all patients, and follow-up period ranged from 12 to 78 months. All patients remained well without recurrence. Conclusions: Mammary myofibroblastoma is a rare benign mesenchymal tumor. In some circumstances, it may exhibit confusing morphologies, including some variants. The epithelioid variant of mammary myofibroblastoma might mimic invasive lobular carcinoma, leading to the diagnostic dilemmas and even misdiagnosis, especially in core needle biopsy specimen or frozen sections. Familiarity with the characteristics of this tumor is of great importance for accurate diagnosis and proper treatment.

Effect of pre-slaughter shackling and wing flapping on plasma parameters, postmortem metabolism, AMPK, and meat quality of broilers. Poult Sci 2018; 97:1841-1847. Abstract
The objective of this study was to determine the effects of shackling and wing flapping on stress, postmortem metabolism, AMP-activated protein kinase (AMPK), and quality of broiler pectoralis major. Before slaughter, a total of 80 Arbor Acres broilers was randomly categorized into 2 replicate pens (40 broilers per pen) and each pen randomly divided into 2 groups (shackling, T; control, C). Corticosterone, creatine kinase, and lactate dehydrogenase were determined on blood plasma parameters. Pectoralis major were removed after evisceration and used for determination of energy metabolism, meat quality, and AMPK phosphorylation. In this study, shackling and wing flapping increased (P < 0.05) plasma corticosterone level, creatine kinase activity, and lactate dehydrogenase activity. Shackling and wing flapping increased (P < 0.05) AMPKα(Thr172) and acetyl-CoA carboxylase (ACC) phosphorylation, followed by rapid glycolysis and accumulation of lactic acid, and leading to a fast pH decline in the initial postmortem meat. Shackling and wing flapping have an adverse effect on final meat quality, which increased (P < 0.05) muscle lightness, drip loss, and cooking loss. The results indicate that antemortem shackling and wing flapping increased stress and AMPKα(Thr172) phosphorylation, which may accelerate glycolysis and lead to a low water-holding capacity of broiler meat.

Abstract
Objective: To investigate the clinicopathologic and genetic features, pathologic diagnosis and differential diagnosis of angiofibroma of soft tissue(AFST). Methods: The clinicopathologic characteristics of 24 cases diagnosed at Fudan University Shanghai Cancer Center from 2011 to 2017 were analyzed; immunohistochemical staining and interphase fluorescence in situ hybridization (FISH) were performed, and the literatures were also reviewed. Results: There were 15 male and 9 female (male∶female=1.7∶1.0) patients with age of onset ranging from 8 to 68 years (mean, 45 years). Fourteen cases occurred in extremities, including upper limbs (n=3) and lower limbs (n=11); seven cases were in the trunk, and 1 case each was in the temporal region, retroperitoneum and liver, respectively. Clinically, the tumors usually presented as a slowly growing painless mass. Tumor sizes ranged from 0.8 to 14 cm (mean 4.6 cm). Microscopically, most lesions were well-circumscribed, with fibrous capsules. Few cases infiltrated the surrounding fibrofatty tissue focally. The tumors were mainly composed of sparse short spindle cells and numerous small, branching, thin-walled blood vessels distributed in amyxoid, fibromyxoid or collagenous matrix, often accompanied by medium-sized, round or irregular and ecstatic vessels at the tumor periphery.By immunohistochemistry, all tested cases expressed vimentin (5/5), and showed variable positivity for EMA (2/4), ER (1/2), PR (2/3), α-SMA (1/18)and desmin (1/10). Ki-67 proliferation index were all less than 5%. CD34, CD31 and ERG staining clearly outlined the contours of blood vessels in the stroma. Four cases were tested for NCOA2 gene rearrangement by FISH, of which three were positive. Follow-up data was available in 17 patients (range, 3 to 69 months; mean, 30 months) were all free of disease. Conclusions: Soft tissue angiofibroma is a benign fibroblastic neoplasm characterized by a prominent and complex vasculature set in a myxoid-to-collagenous stroma, and cytogenetically a distinctive NCOA2 gene rearrangement. Caution should be exercised for the possibility of potentially misinterpretation of AFST as vascular tumors and other myxoid soft tissue tumors.

N-octanoylated ghrelin peptide inhibits bovine oocyte meiotic resumption. Gen Comp Endocrinol 2018; 263:7-11. [PMID: 29673842 DOI: 10.1016/j.ygcen.2018.04.016] [Citation(s) in RCA: 4] [Impact Index Per Article: 0.7] [Reference Citation Analysis] [Abstract] [Key Words] [MESH Headings] [Track Full Text] [Journal Information] [Submit a Manuscript] [Subscribe] [Scholar Register] [Received: 01/06/2018] [Revised: 04/09/2018] [Accepted: 04/14/2018] [Indexed: 12/11/2022]
Abstract
BACKGROUND Studies have shown that ghrelin plays an important role in the mammalian reproductive system, including the central, gonadal levels, and also during in vitro maturation of oocytes; however, the functions of ghrelin in bovine oocyte meiosis require further investigation. OBJECTIVE We aimed to evaluate the effects of an n-octanoylated ghrelin peptide on oocyte meiotic resumption and the developmental competence of mature oocytes in vitro. EXPERIMENTAL design: The expression of GHRL (encoding ghrelin) mRNA and its receptor (the growth hormone secretagogue receptor, GHSR) in the cumulus-oocyte complex (COCs), denuded oocytes (DOs), and cumulus cells (CCs) was assessed using quantitative real-time reverse transcription PCR (qRT-PCR), and the effects of the n-octanoylated ghrelin peptide on meiotic resumption were studied at four different doses (0, 10, 50, and 100 ng/mL) in a 6 h culture system. RESULTS qRT-PCR analysis showed that GHRL and GHSR mRNAs were expressed in all tested samples; however, GHRL was predominantly expressed in DOs, and GHSR was predominantly expressed in CCs. Germinal vesicle breakdown was inhibited significantly by 50 ng/mL ghrelin compared with that in the negative control (P < 0.05). Further studies showed that n-octanoylated ghrelin increased the levels of cAMP and cGMP in the CCs and DOs, which inhibited the meiotic resumption of bovine oocytes. And the inhibitory role in the developmental competence of mature oocytes were also included, ghrelin could significantly improve the cleavage rate (P < 0.05) and blastocyst rate (P < 0.05). CONCLUSION N-octanoylated ghrelin maintained bovine oocytes meiotic arrest and further improved their developmental competence; therefore, n-octanoylated ghrelin could be considered as a potential pharmaceutical inhibitor of meiosis for the in vitro maturation of bovine oocytes.

Phase 2a, randomized, double-blind, placebo-controlled, multicentre, parallel-group study of an H 4 R-antagonist (JNJ-39758979) in adults with uncontrolled asthma. Clin Exp Allergy 2018; 48:957-969. [PMID: 29682796 DOI: 10.1111/cea.13154] [Citation(s) in RCA: 8] [Impact Index Per Article: 1.3] [Reference Citation Analysis] [Abstract] [Key Words] [Journal Information] [Subscribe] [Scholar Register] [Received: 12/12/2017] [Revised: 01/12/2018] [Accepted: 02/01/2018] [Indexed: 11/26/2022]
Abstract
BACKGROUND The effects of H4 R antagonists in preclinical asthma models support the study of antagonists of the H4 R in the treatment of asthma in humans. JNJ-39758979 is a potent and highly selective oral H4 R antagonist. OBJECTIVE We sought to evaluate the safety and efficacy of the H4 R-antagonist JNJ-39758979 in adult patients with uncontrolled asthma. METHODS One hundred and fifteen eligible patients were randomly assigned to JNJ-39758979 300 mg or placebo once daily for 12 weeks in this phase 2a, double-blind, multicenter, placebo-controlled study. Primary efficacy was assessed via week-12 change from baseline in pre-bronchodilator forced expiratory volume in 1 second (FEV1 ). Secondary efficacy assessments included patient-reported outcome (PRO) asthma assessments (Asthma Daily Diary data [AM and PM peak expiratory flow rate, number of puffs of albuterol/salbutamol, the presence of nocturnal awakenings and asthma symptom score]). RESULTS The study did not meet the primary end-point. However, nominally significant improvements in pre-bronchodilator FEV1 were observed with JNJ-39758979 versus placebo at week 12 in pre-specified subgroups with elevated exhaled nitric oxide, sputum eosinophils or blood eosinophils at baseline. Nominally significant improvements across PRO assessments were consistently observed in the overall population, as well as in eosinophilic subgroups. Safety, such as adverse event rates, was comparable between JNJ-39758979 and placebo. No serious adverse events were reported. No clinically relevant changes in laboratory values were observed. CONCLUSIONS AND CLINICAL RELEVANCE The findings suggest potential benefit of H4 R antagonists on lung function and asthma control in eosinophilic asthma patients and warrant further evaluation of this mechanism in asthma with eosinophilic inflammation. Abstract
Objective: To discuss the clinical effect of small dose of botulinum toxin injection in cricothyroid muscle and thyroarytenoid muscle on patients with incomplete bilateral recurrent laryngeal nerve paresis. Methods: Six patients were selected with Ⅰor Ⅱ or Ⅲ degree of dyspnea diagnosed as bilateral recurrent laryngeal nerve injury by laryngeal electromyography, and small dose of botulinum toxin injection was performed in cricothyroid muscle and thyroarytenoid muscle as a treatment. Degree of dyspnea was assessed one month before and after the treatment, and the stroboscopic laryngoscope results, acoustic parameters and CT image of the patients were collected in the 6 patients. The relevant parameters were also collected one month before and after treatment, including the degree of dyspnea, stroboscopic laryngoscope results, acoustic parameters and CT image of the patients. The angle between bilateral vocal cords in stroboscopy at full inspiratory was calculated, acoustic parameters (F0, jitter, shimmer) were analysed, and vocal length, width and the vocal region were measured. Then, the paired t test was performed for statistical analysis between before and after one month injection, the one way analysis of variance was performed among vocal parameters in CT image. Result: Botulinum toxin injection was successfully completed in the 6 patients, followed without any serious complications. The degree of dyspnea was alleviated to some extent after treatment in all 6 patients; the angle between bilateral vocal cords at the end of a deep inspiration was significantly increased (t=2.44, P<0.05) after the treatment. The changes of F0 and jitter between before and after treatment were not statistically significant (t=0.72, t=1.42, P>0.05). Shimmer was significantly decreased after treatment (t=2.61, P<0.05). Vocal fold length, width and vocal region increased with F0, there was a statistically significant difference between different F0 before injection, and there was no statistically significant difference between different F0 after injection. The follow-up time was respectively seven months, 1 year, 1 year, 18 months, 22 months and 2 years respectively. Conclusion: Small dose of botulinum toxin injection in bilateral cricothyroid muscles and thyroarytenoid muscles can relieve the dyspnea caused by bilateral vocal cords paresis to some extent, accompanied without serious complications, despite the sound quality was slightly worse.

Abstract
This study was designed to compare the effects of different stunning voltages of pulsed direct current on meat quality of broilers. For this purpose, plasma parameters, blood loss, carcass damage, and meat water holding capacity, color, shear force, pH, and protein solubility were analyzed. A total of 400 broilers were divided into 5 treatment groups and stunned with 5, 15, 25, 35, and 45 V at 750 Hz and 10 s, respectively. Blood samples were collected immediately after cutting the neck. Pectoralis major muscles were removed from the carcass after chilling and placed on ice. Breast muscle pH and meat color were determined at both 2 and 24 h postmortem. Dripping loss, cooking loss, pressing loss, and cooked breast meat shear values were determined after 24 h postmortem. The 5 V treatment significantly increased (P < 0.05) blood plasma corticosterone and lactate concentration compared with the other groups. The carcass damage of wings, Pectoralis major, and Pectoralis minor was significant in the 5, 35, and 45 V groups. The pH of 2 h postmortem in the 5 and 45 V groups was significantly lower (P < 0.05) than in the 15 and 25 V groups. In the 5 and 45 V groups, the protein solubility and shear force value were significantly lower (P < 0.05) and dripping loss was significantly higher (P < 0.05) than the other groups.

Abstract
We show that a high-energy electron bunch can be used to capture the instantaneous longitudinal and transverse field structures of the highly transient, microscopic, laser-excited relativistic wake with femtosecond resolution. The spatiotemporal evolution of wakefields in a plasma density up ramp is measured and the reversal of the plasma wake, where the wake wavelength at a particular point in space increases until the wake disappears completely only to reappear at a later time but propagating in the opposite direction, is observed for the first time by using this new technique.

Abstract
Objective: To investigate androgen receptor(AR)expression in invasive breast carcinoma and the correlation with surrogate molecular breast carcinoma subtypes. Methods: Immunohistochemical staining of AR and other biomarkers was performed in a cohort of 870 cases of primary invasive breast carcinomas collected from August to December, 2016. The association of AR expression with different histological and surrogate molecular subtypes was analyzed. Results: The positive expression rate of AR in the immunohistochemistry-based surrogate subtypes was 96.3%(207/215) for Luminal A, 89.8%(378/421) for Luminal B, 82.4%(75/91) for HER2 overexpression and 37.1%(53/143) for triple negative breast carcinoma, with significant differences among the four groups (P<0.01). AR correlated positively with the expression of ER(P<0.01), PR(P<0.01), HER2(P=0.007), GATA3(P<0.01), GCDFP15(P<0.01)and mammaglobin(P<0.01), while negatively with the expression of Ki-67(P<0.01), CK5/6(P<0.01)and CK14(P<0.01). Conclusions: AR exhibits a high expression in invasive breast carcinoma, which is mainly correlated with ER-positive breast carcinoma. Regardless of the relatively low expression rate, AR is a potential therapeutic target in triple negative breast carcinoma.

[Clinicopathologic features of dermal nerve sheath myxoma and neurothekeoma: a comparative study]. ZHONGHUA BING LI XUE ZA ZHI = CHINESE JOURNAL OF PATHOLOGY 2017; 45:755-761. [PMID: 27821229 DOI: 10.3760/cma.j.issn.0529-5807.2016.11.003] [Citation(s) in RCA: 0] [Impact Index Per Article: 0] [Reference Citation Analysis] [Abstract] [Subscribe] [Scholar Register] [Indexed: 11/05/2022]
Abstract
Objective: To investigate the clinicopathologic characteristics and differential diagnosis of dermal nerve sheath myxoma (DNSM) and neurothekeoma (NTK). Methods: Clinical, pathological features and immunohistochemical profiles in 9 cases of DNSM and 8 cases of NTK were comparatively studied. The literature was reviewed. Results: The involved site of 9 DNSMs included the hand/fingers (n=3), ear (n=2), face, back, abdominal wall and waist (1 case each). Two of 8 NTKs arose in the forearm (n=2), one each in the nose, lip, shoulder, supraclavicular region, leg and hand. The most common presentation was a painless cutaneous nodule or plaque which grew slowly. Grossly, DNSM was often gelatinous, whereas NTK appeared relatively solid. Microscopically, both tumors were located in the dermis and/or subcutis. DNSM was composed of well-defined multiple lobules separated by fibrous septa. NTK also exhibited lobular or multinodular architecture, but was relatively ill-defined. Besides, fascicular or whorl-like arrangement was present in 3 cases of NTK. The lobules in DNSM consisted of a paucicellular proliferation of spindled, stellate and epithelioid cells forming interconnecting cords within abundant myxoid matrix. Small syncytial-like aggregates were readily noted. The constituted neoplastic cells in NTK were composed of ovoid to round epithelioid or histiocytoid cells. Scattered multinucleated giant cells were present in 2 cases. Based on the amount of myxoid matrix, 8 NTKs were further classified into cellular (5 cases), mixed (2 cases) and myxoid (1 case). By immunohistochemistry, neoplastic cells in DNSM were diffusely positive for S-100 protein, CD68, glial fibrillary acidic protein and SOX10, whereas neoplastic cells in NTK consistently expressed CD10 and microphthalmia transcription factor, with negativity for S-100 protein and SOX10. One patient each with DNSM and NTK experienced local recurrence due to incomplete excision. Conclusions: Although DNSM and NTK share clinical and pathological features, they belong to different entities. Whereas the former is consistent with a peripheral nerve sheath tumor, the latter is more akin to fibrous histiocytic tumor. Familiarity with their cliniopathologic characteristics and distinctive immunophenotypes will help distinguishing these two entities, as well as in the differential diagnosis of cutaneous neoplasms with similar features.

Abstract
Objective: To analyze prodromal phase and prodromal events of anti-N-methyl-D-aspartate receptor (NMDAR) encephalitis. Methods: Clinical data of 179 patients hospitalized and diagnosed during 2010-2016 including adults and children in Peking Union Medical College Hospital and Beijing Children's Hospital were collected.Patients with prodromal phase or prodromal events were selected.A retrospective analysis of clinical characteristics including prodromal phase or prodromal events, course of disease, brain imaging, laboratory results and therapeutic effect was performed. Results: Prodromal phase was presented in 31.8% (57/179) of patients. Most common symptoms included fever (73.7%) and headache (68.4%). Prodromal phase was prolonged in 6 patients, the longest being 64 days.Among those 6 patients (10.5%), headache and fever were the only symptoms throughout disease courses in 3 cases.Prodromal events were reported in 6.1% (11/179) of patients, including 5 patients after HSV1 encephalitis, 1 after Japanese encephalitis, and 2 after resection of melanocytic nevi. Conclusions: Anti-NMDAR encephalitis can be preceded with prolonged prodromal phase. In some patients prodromal symptoms are the only clinical presentation.Clinical features of those atypical cases suggest that infection may be the precipitating factor.Viral encephalitis including HSV1 encephalitis and Japanese encephalitis may be prodromal events in some cases.
