The OpenMolcas Web: A Community-Driven Approach to Advancing Computational Chemistry

The developments of the open-source OpenMolcas chemistry software environment since spring 2020 are described, with a focus on novel functionalities accessible in the stable branch of the package or via interfaces with other packages. These developments span a wide range of topics in computational chemistry and are presented in thematic sections: electronic structure theory, electronic spectroscopy simulations, analytic gradients and molecular structure optimizations, ab initio molecular dynamics, and other new features. This report offers an overview of the chemical phenomena and processes OpenMolcas can address, while showing that OpenMolcas is an attractive platform for state-of-the-art atomistic computer simulations.

The Rise and Current Status of Polaritonic Photochemistry and Photophysics

The interaction between molecular electronic transitions and electromagnetic fields can be enlarged to the point where distinct hybrid light-matter states, polaritons, emerge. The photonic contribution to these states results in increased complexity as well as an opening to modify the photophysics and photochemistry beyond what normally can be seen in organic molecules. It is today evident that polaritons offer opportunities for molecular photochemistry and photophysics, which has caused an ever-rising interest in the field. Focusing on the experimental landmarks, this review takes its reader from the advent of the field of polaritonic chemistry, over the split into polariton chemistry and photochemistry, to present day status within polaritonic photochemistry and photophysics. To introduce the field, the review starts with a general description of light-matter interactions, how to enhance these, and what characterizes the coupling strength. Then the photochemistry and photophysics of strongly coupled systems using Fabry-Perot and plasmonic cavities are described. This is followed by a description of room-temperature Bose-Einstein condensation/polariton lasing in polaritonic systems. The review ends with a discussion on the benefits, limitations, and future developments of strong exciton-photon coupling using organic molecules.

Construction of Phenanthridinone Skeletons through Palladium-Catalyzed Annulation

Herein, a straightforward synthetic approach for the construction of phenanthridin-6(5H)-one skeletons is disclosed. The developed protocol relies on palladium catalysis, providing controlled access to a range of functionalized phenanthridin-6(5H)-ones in 59-88% yields. Furthermore, plausible reaction pathways are proposed based on mechanistic experiments.

A Hairpin Motif in the Amyloid-β Peptide Is Important for Formation of Disease-Related Oligomers

The amyloid-β (Aβ) peptide is associated with the development of Alzheimer's disease and is known to form highly neurotoxic prefibrillar oligomeric aggregates, which are difficult to study due to their transient, low-abundance, and heterogeneous nature. To obtain high-resolution information about oligomer structure and dynamics as well as relative populations of assembly states, we here employ a combination of native ion mobility mass spectrometry and molecular dynamics simulations. We find that the formation of Aβ oligomers is dependent on the presence of a specific β-hairpin motif in the peptide sequence. Oligomers initially grow spherically but start to form extended linear aggregates at oligomeric states larger than those of the tetramer. The population of the extended oligomers could be notably increased by introducing an intramolecular disulfide bond, which prearranges the peptide in the hairpin conformation, thereby promoting oligomeric structures but preventing conversion into mature fibrils. Conversely, truncating one of the β-strand-forming segments of Aβ decreased the hairpin propensity of the peptide and thus decreased the oligomer population, removed the formation of extended oligomers entirely, and decreased the aggregation propensity of the peptide. We thus propose that the observed extended oligomer state is related to the formation of an antiparallel sheet state, which then nucleates into the amyloid state. These studies provide increased mechanistic understanding of the earliest steps in Aβ aggregation and suggest that inhibition of Aβ folding into the hairpin conformation could be a viable strategy for reducing the amount of toxic oligomers.

Probing Substrate Transport Effects on Enzymatic Hydrogen Catalysis: An Alternative Proton Transfer Pathway in Putatively Sensory [FeFe] Hydrogenase

[FeFe] hydrogenases, metalloenzymes catalyzing proton/dihydrogen interconversion, have attracted intense attention due to their remarkable catalytic properties and (bio-)technological potential for a future hydrogen economy. In order to unravel the factors enabling their efficient catalysis, both their unique organometallic cofactors and protein structural features, i.e., "outer-coordination sphere" effects have been intensively studied. These structurally diverse enzymes are divided into distinct phylogenetic groups, denoted as Group A-D. Prototypical Group A hydrogenases display high turnover rates (104-105 s-1). Conversely, the sole characterized Group D representative, Thermoanaerobacter mathranii HydS (TamHydS), shows relatively low catalytic activity (specific activity 10-1 μmol H2 mg-1 min-1) and has been proposed to serve a H2-sensory function. The various groups of [FeFe] hydrogenase share the same catalytic cofactor, the H-cluster, and the structural factors causing the diverging reactivities of Group A and D remain to be elucidated. In the case of the highly active Group A enzymes, a well-defined proton transfer pathway (PTP) has been identified, which shuttles H+ between the enzyme surface and the active site. In Group D hydrogenases, this conserved pathway is absent. Here, we report on the identification of highly conserved amino acid residues in Group D hydrogenases that constitute a possible alternative PTP. We varied two proposed key amino acid residues of this pathway (E252 and E289, TamHydS numbering) via site-directed mutagenesis and analyzed the resulting variants via biochemical and spectroscopic methods. All variants displayed significantly decreased H2-evolution and -oxidation activities. Additionally, the variants showed two redox states that were not characterized previously. These findings provide initial evidence that these amino acid residues are central to the putative PTP of Group D [FeFe] hydrogenase. Since the identified residues are highly conserved in Group D exclusively, our results support the notion that the PTP is not universal for different phylogenetic groups in [FeFe] hydrogenases.

Fully Integrated Wearable Device for Continuous Sweat Lactate Monitoring in Sports

The chemical digitalization of sweat using wearable sensing interfaces is an attractive alternative to traditional blood-based protocols in sports. Although sweat lactate has been claimed to be a relevant biomarker in sports, an analytically validated wearable system to prove that has not yet been developed. We present a fully integrated sweat lactate sensing system applicable to in situ perspiration analysis. The device can be conveniently worn in the skin to monitor real-time sweat lactate during sports, such as cycling and kayaking. The novelty of the system is threefold: advanced microfluidics design for sweat collection and analysis, an analytically validated lactate biosensor based on a rational design of an outer diffusion-limiting membrane, and an integrated circuit for signal processing with a custom smartphone application. The sensor covering the range expected for lactate in sweat (1-20 mM), with appropriate sensitivity (-12.5 ± 0.53 nA mM-1), shows an acceptable response time (<90 s), and the influence of changes in pH, temperature, and flow rate are neglectable. Also, the sensor is analytically suitable with regard to reversibility, resilience, and reproducibility. The sensing device is validated through a relatively high number of on-body tests performed with elite athletes cycling and kayaking in controlled environments. Correlation outcomes between sweat lactate and other physiological indicators typically accessible in sports laboratories (blood lactate, perceived exhaustion, heart rate, blood glucose, respiratory quotient) are also presented and discussed in relation to the sport performance monitoring capability of continuous sweat lactate.

Frequency-Domain Method for Characterization of Upconversion Luminescence Kinetics

The frequency-domain (FD) method provides an alternative to the commonly used time-domain (TD) approach in characterizing the luminescence kinetics of luminophores, with its own strengths, e.g., the capability to decouple multiple lifetime components with higher reliability and accuracy. While extensively explored for characterizing luminophores with down-shifted emission, this method has not been investigated for studying nonlinear luminescent materials such as lanthanide-doped upconversion nanoparticles (UCNPs), featuring more complicated kinetics. In this work, employing a simplified rate-equation model representing a standard two-photon energy-transfer upconversion process, we thoroughly analyzed the response of the luminescence of UCNPs in the FD method. We found that the FD method can potentially obtain from a single experiment the effective decay rates of three critical energy states of the sensitizer/activator ions involved in the upconversion process. The validity of the FD method is demonstrated by experimental data, agreeing reasonably well with the results obtained by TD methods.

Perfect Absorption and Strong Coupling in Supported MoS2 Multilayers

Perfect absorption and strong coupling are two highly sought-after regimes of light-matter interactions. Both regimes have been studied as separate phenomena in excitonic 2D materials, particularly in MoS₂. However, the structures used to reach these regimes often require intricate nanofabrication. Here, we demonstrate the occurrence of perfect absorption and strong coupling in thin MoS₂ multilayers supported by a glass substrate. We measure reflection spectra of mechanically exfoliated MoS₂ flakes at various angles beyond the light-line via Fourier plane imaging and spectroscopy and find that absorption in MoS₂ monolayers increases up to 74% at the C-exciton by illuminating at the critical angle. Perfect absorption is achieved for ultrathin MoS₂ flakes (4-8 layers) with a notable angle and frequency sensitivity to the exact number of layers. By calculating zeros and poles of the scattering matrix in the complex frequency plane, we identify perfect absorption (zeros) and strong coupling (poles) conditions for thin (<10 layers) and thick (>10 layers) limits. Our findings reveal rich physics of light-matter interactions in bare MoS₂ flakes, which could be useful for nanophotonic and light harvesting applications.

New Perspective on Electron Transfer through Molecules

Motivated by experiments which display unusual length and temperature effects for electron transfer in the nanometer length regime, we propose a new approach for describing long-range electron transfer (ET) processes through molecules. We posit that the electron reorganization in the molecules (e.g., the electronic polarization of a macromolecule or organic film by an applied electric potential, or the injected charge generating a dipole moment) should be included in the description. We numerically solve a one-dimensional model for the electron transport, which includes electron-electron interactions explicitly, and we show that it generates a power law distance dependence for electron transport similar to that observed in experiments. The model does not include vibrations explicitly and should be consistent with the weak temperature dependences observed experimentally. This approach emphasizes the need to treat the electronic changes in the molecule(s) more explicitly to understand the behavior.

Insights and Implications of Intricate Surface Charge Transfer and sp3-Defects in Graphene/Metal Oxide Interfaces

Adherence of metal oxides to graphene is of fundamental significance to graphene nanoelectronic and spintronic interfaces. Titanium oxide and aluminum oxide are two widely used tunnel barriers in such devices, which offer optimum interface resistance and distinct interface conditions that govern transport parameters and device performance. Here, we reveal a fundamental difference in how these metal oxides interface with graphene through electrical transport measurements and Raman and photoelectron spectroscopies, combined with ab initio electronic structure calculations of such interfaces. While both oxide layers cause surface charge transfer induced p-type doping in graphene, in sharp contrast to TiO_x, the AlO_x/graphene interface shows the presence of appreciable sp³ defects. Electronic structure calculations disclose that significant p-type doping occurs due to a combination of sp³ bonds formed between C and O atoms at the interface and possible slightly off-stoichiometric defects of the aluminum oxide layer. Furthermore, the sp³ hybridization at the AlO_x/graphene interface leads to distinct magnetic moments of unsaturated bonds, which not only explicates the widely observed low spin-lifetimes in AlO_x barrier graphene spintronic devices but also suggests possibilities for new hybrid resistive switching and spin valves.

Structurally Colored Cellulose Nanocrystal Films as Transreflective Radiative Coolers

Radiative cooling forms an emerging direction in which objects are passively cooled via thermal radiation to cold space. Cooling materials should provide high thermal emissivity (infrared absorptance) and low solar absorptance, making cellulose an ideal and sustainable candidate. Broadband solar-reflective or transparent coolers are not the only systems of interest, but also more pleasingly looking colored systems. However, solutions based on wavelength-selective absorption generate not only color but also heat and thereby counteract the cooling function. Intended as coatings for solar cells, we demonstrate a transreflective cellulose material with minimal solar absorption that generates color by wavelength-selective reflection, while it transmits other parts of the solar spectrum. Our solution takes advantage of the ability of cellulose nanocrystals to self-assemble into helical periodic structures, providing nonabsorptive films with structurally colored reflection. Application of violet-blue, green, and red cellulose films on silicon substrates reduced the temperature by up to 9 °C under solar illumination, as result of a combination of radiative cooling and reduced solar absorption due to the wavelength-selective reflection by the colored coating. The present work establishes self-assembled cellulose nanocrystal photonic films as a scalable photonic platform for colored radiative cooling.

Free-Standing Metal Halide Perovskite Nanowire Arrays with Blue-Green Heterostructures

Vertically aligned metal halide perovskite (MHP) nanowires are promising for various optoelectronic applications, which can be further enhanced by heterostructures. However, present methods to obtain free-standing vertically aligned MHP nanowire arrays and heterostructures lack the scalability needed for applications. We use a low-temperature solution process to prepare free-standing vertically aligned green-emitting CsPbBr₃ nanowires from anodized aluminum oxide templates. The length is controlled from 1 to 20 μm by the precursor amount. The nanowires are single-crystalline and exhibit excellent photoluminescence, clear light guiding and high photoconductivity with a responsivity of 1.9 A/W. We demonstrate blue-green heterostructured nanowire arrays by converting the free-standing part of the nanowires to CsPbCl_1.1Br_1.9 in an anion exchange process. Our results demonstrate a scalable, self-aligned, and lithography-free approach to achieve high quality free-standing MHP nanowires arrays and heterostructures, offering new possibilities for optoelectronic applications.

Perovskite-Compatible Electron-Beam-Lithography Process Based on Nonpolar Solvents for Single-Nanowire Devices

Metal halide perovskites (MHPs) have been studied intensely as the active material for optoelectronic devices. Lithography methods for perovskites remain limited because of the solubility of perovskites in polar solvents. Here, we demonstrate an electron-beam-lithography process with a poly(methyl methacrylate) resist based on the nonpolar solvents o-xylene, hexane, and toluene. Features down to 50 nm size are created, and photoluminescence of CsPbBr₃ nanowires exhibits no degradation. We fabricate metal contacts to single CsPbBr₃ nanowires, which show a strong photoresponsivity of 0.29 A W^-1. The presented method is an excellent tool for nanoscale MHP science and technology, allowing for the fabrication of complex nanostructures.

Charge and Spin Dynamics and Enantioselectivity in Chiral Molecules

Charge and spin dynamics are addressed in chiral molecules immediately after their instantaneous coupling to an external metallic reservoir. This work describes how a spin polarization is induced in the chiral structure as a response to the charge dynamics. The dynamics indicate that chiral induced spin selectivity is an excited state phenomenon that in the transient regime can be partly captured using a simplistic single-particle description but in the stationary limit definitively shows that electron correlations, e.g., electron-vibration interactions, crucially contribute to sustain an intrinsic spin anisotropy that can lead to a nonvanishing spin selectivity. The dynamics, moreover, provide insight into enantiomer separation, due to different acquired spin polarizations.

Aerobic Oxidative EDA Catalysis: Synthesis of Tetrahydroquinolines Using an Organocatalytic EDA Active Acceptor

A catalytic electron donor-acceptor (EDA) complex for the visible-light-driven annulation reaction between activated alkenes and N,N-substituted dialkyl anilines is reported. The key photoactive complex is formed in situ between dialkylated anilines as donors and 1,2-dibenzoylethylene as a catalytic acceptor. The catalytic acceptor is regenerated by aerobic oxidation. Investigations into the mechanism are provided, revealing a rare example of a catalytic acceptor in photoactive EDA complexes that can give access to selective functionalization of aromatic amines under mild photochemical conditions.

Nanoparticulate Double-Heterojunction Photocatalysts Comprising TiO2(Anatase)/WO3/TiO2(Rutile) with Enhanced Photocatalytic Activity toward the Degradation of Methyl Orange under Near-Ultraviolet and Visible Light

Nanoparticulate double-heterojunction photocatalysts comprising TiO_2(Anatase)/WO₃/TiO_2(Rutile) were produced by a sol-gel method. The resulting photocatalysts exhibit clear synergistic effects when tested toward the degradation of methyl orange under both UV and visible light. Kinetic studies indicate that the degradation rate on the best double-heterojunction photocatalyst (10 wt % WO₃-TiO₂) depends mainly on the amount of dye concentration, contrary to pure oxides in which the degradation rate is limited by diffusion-controlled processes. The synergistic effects were confirmed through systematic and careful studies including holes and OH radical formation, X-ray diffraction, electron microscopy, elemental analysis, UV-vis diffuse reflectance spectroscopy, and surface area analysis. Our results indicate that the successful formation of a double heterojunction in the TiO_2(Anatase)/WO₃/TiO_2(Rutile) system leads to enhanced photoactivity when compared to individual oxides and commercial TiO₂ P25.
