Abstract
Histone lactylation is a metabolic stress-related histone modification. However, the role of histone lactylation in the development of sepsis-associated acute kidney injury (SA-AKI) remains unclear. Here, histone H3K18 lactylation (H3K18la) is elevated in SA-AKI, which is reported in this study. Furthermore, this lactate-dependent histone modification is enriched at the promoter of Ras homolog gene family member A (RhoA) and positively correlated with the transcription. Correction of abnormal lactate levels resulted in a reversal of abnormal histone lactylation at the promoter of RhoA. Examination of related mechanism revealed that histone lactylation promoted the RhoA/Rho-associated protein kinase (ROCK) /Ezrin signaling, the activation of nuclear factor-κB (NF-κB), inflammation, cell apoptosis, and aggravated renal dysfunction. In addition, Ezrin can undergo lactylation modification. Multiple lactylation sites are identified in Ezrin and confirmed that lactylation mainly occurred at the K263 site. The role of histone lactylation is revealed in SA-AKI and reportes a novel post-translational modification in Ezrin. Its potential role in regulating inflammatory metabolic adaptation of renal proximal tubule epithelial cells is also elucidated. The results provide novel insights into the epigenetic regulation of the onset of SA-AKI.

Abstract
Intrinsic immunosuppressive tumor microenvironment (ITM) and insufficient tumor infiltration of T cells severely impede the progress of glioblastoma (GBM) immunotherapy. In this study, it is identify that inhibiting the expression of glucose transporter 1 (GLUT1) can facilitate the prevention of lactate excretion from tumor glycolysis, which significantly alleviates the lactate-driven ITM by reducing immunosuppressive tumor-associated macrophages (TAMs) and regulatory T cells (Tregs). Simultaneously, the findings show that the generated inflammatory cytokine IFN-γ during immune activation aggravates the immune escape by upregulating immune checkpoint programmed death-ligand 1 (PD-L1) in tumor cells and TAMs. Therefore, an injectable thermogel loaded with a GLUT1 inhibitor BAY-876 and a PD-1/PD-L1 blocker BMS-1 (Gel@B-B) for dual-regulation of metabolism and immunity of GBM is developed. Consequently, in situ injection of Gel@B-B significantly delays tumor growth and prolongs the survival of the orthotopic GBM mouse model. By actively exposing tumor antigens to antigen-presenting cells, the GBM vaccine combined with Gel@B-B is found to significantly increase the fraction of effector T cells (Th1/CTLs) in the tumor microenvironment, thereby remarkably mitigating tumor recurrence long-term. This study may provide a promising strategy for GBM immunotherapy.

Abstract
Host-induced gene silencing (HIGS) is an inherent mechanism of plant resistance to fungal pathogens, resulting from cross-kingdom RNA interference (RNAi) mediated by small RNAs (sRNAs) delivered from plants into invading fungi. Introducing artificial sRNA precursors into crops can trigger HIGS of selected fungal genes, and thus has potential applications in agricultural disease control. To investigate the HIGS of apple (Malus sp.) during the interaction with Botryosphaeria dothidea, the pathogenic fungus causing apple ring rot disease, we evaluated whether apple miRNAs can be transported into and target genes in B. dothidea. Indeed, miR159a from Malus hupehensis, a wild apple germplasm with B. dothidea resistance, silenced the fungal sugar transporter gene BdSTP. The accumulation of miR159a in extracellular vesicles (EVs) of both infected M. hupehensis and invading B. dothidea suggests that this miRNA of the host is transported into the fungus via the EV pathway. Knockout of BdSTP caused defects in fungal growth and proliferation, whereas knockin of a miR159a-insensitive version of BdSTP resulted in increased pathogenicity. Inhibition of miR159a in M. hupehensis substantially enhanced plant sensitivity to B. dothidea, indicating miR159a-mediated HIGS against BdSTP being integral to apple immunity. Introducing artificial sRNA precursors targeting BdSTP and BdALS, an acetolactate synthase gene, into M. hupehensis revealed that double-stranded RNAs were more potent than engineered MIRNAs in triggering HIGS alternative to those natural of apple and inhibiting infection. These results provide preliminary evidence for cross-kingdom RNAi in the apple-B. dothidea interaction and establish HIGS as a potential disease control strategy in apple.

Abstract
PURPOSE The study aims to compare morphology and location of crystalline lens between acute acquired concomitant esotropia (AACE) patients and control subjects, both before and after cycloplegia. METHODS This is a prospective and observational clinical study. Morphological and locational parameters of the crystalline lens in 53 AACE patients and 32 control subjects were assessed before and after cycloplegia using CASIA2 system, which represents the latest swept-source anterior segment optical coherence tomography. Cycloplegic refraction was recorded by administering 1% atropine in patients younger than 12 years and 1% cyclopentolate in those > 12 years old. Morphological parameters included anterior radius of curvature (ARC), posterior radius of curvature (PRC), lens thickness (LTH), and equivalent diameter of lens (LED). Locational parameters comprised lens decentration (LD) and lens tilt (LT). Comparison of these parameters before and after cycloplegia were conducted between AACE and controls. Additionally, the study analyzed and compared the changes in these parameter post-cycloplegia. RESULTS Our findings suggest no significant difference in morphological parameters including ARC, PRC, LTH and LED between AACE patients and controls before or after cycloplegia. However, 2D-modeling data in the 0° meridian revealed that variation post-cycloplegia of LD (lens shift) in right eyes was different in AACE patients, measuring - 0.03(0.08) [median(interquartile range)] which was significantly distinct from the control group, exhibiting a measurement of 0.01(0.06) (z = - 2.373, p = 0.018). In left eyes, a similar trend was observed with lens shift in the 0° meridian being 0.02(0.06) in AACE, significantly differing from control group's measurement of - 0.02(0.08) (z = - 2.809, p = 0.005). Further, correlation analysis revealed that larger temporal shift of lens was associated with greater changes in ARC (r = 0.294, p = 0.006) and LTH (r = - 0.230, p = 0.031). CONCLUSIONS The morphological features of the crystalline lens were similar in AACE patients and controls; however, the change of lens location by cycloplegia was observed only in AACE patients, suggesting an association with excessive accommodation.

Abstract
Laser-diode-based solid-state lighting is primarily used in state-of-the-art illumination systems. However, these systems rely on light-converting inorganic phosphors, which have low quantum efficiencies and complex manufacturing conditions. In this study, a mismatched refractive index strategy is proposed to directly convert natural bulk wood into a laser-driven wood diffuser using a simple delignification and polymer infiltration method. The resulting material has the potential to be used in laser-driven diffuse illumination applications. The optical performance of the laser-driven wood diffuser is optimized by changing the density of natural wood. The optimal coefficient of illuminance variation of the wood diffuser is as low as 17.7%, which is significantly lower than that of commercial diffusers. The illuminance uniformity is larger than 0.9, which is significantly higher than the ISO requirements for indoor workplace lighting. The laser damage threshold is 7.9 J cm-2, which is considerably higher than those of the substrates of commercially available phosphors. Furthermore, the optimized wood diffuser exhibits outstanding mechanical properties, excellent thermal stability, tolerance to harsh environmental conditions, and low speckle contrast. These results show that the laser-driven wood diffuser is a promising laser-color converter that is suitable for indoor, long-distance outdoor, undersea, and other high-luminance laser lighting applications.

Abstract
Our study investigates the molecular link between COVID-19 and Alzheimer's disease (AD). We aim to elucidate the mechanisms by which COVID-19 may influence the onset or progression of AD. Using bioinformatic tools, we analyzed gene expression datasets from the Gene Expression Omnibus (GEO) database, including GSE147507, GSE12685, and GSE26927. Intersection analysis was utilized to identify common differentially expressed genes (CDEGs) and their shared biological pathways. Consensus clustering was conducted to group AD patients based on gene expression, followed by an analysis of the immune microenvironment and variations in shared pathway activities between clusters. Additionally, we identified transcription factor-binding sites shared by CDEGs and genes in the common pathway. The activity of the pathway and the expression levels of the CDEGs were validated using GSE164805 and GSE48350 datasets. Six CDEGs (MAL2, NECAB1, SH3GL2, EPB41L3, MEF2C, and NRGN) were identified, along with a downregulated pathway, the endocannabinoid (ECS) signaling pathway, common to both AD and COVID-19. These CDEGs showed a significant correlation with ECS activity (p < 0.05) and immune functions. The ECS pathway was enriched in healthy individuals' brains and downregulated in AD patients. Validation using GSE164805 and GSE48350 datasets confirmed the differential expression of these genes in COVID-19 and AD tissues. Our findings reveal a potential pathogenetic link between COVID-19 and AD, mediated by CDEGs and the ECS pathway. However, further research and multicenter evidence are needed to translate these findings into clinical applications.

Abstract
The genus Bruguiera, a member of the Rhizophoraceae family, is predominantly found in coastal areas as a mangrove plant, boasting a rich and diverse community of endophytes. This review systematically compiled approximately 496 compounds derived from both the Bruguiera genus and its associated endophytes, including 152 terpenoids, 17 steroids, 16 sulfides, 44 alkaloids and peptides, 66 quinones, 68 polyketides, 19 flavonoids, 38 phenylpropanoids, 54 aromatic compounds, and 22 other compounds. Among these, 201 compounds exhibited a spectrum of activities, including cytotoxicity, antimicrobial, antioxidant, anti-inflammatory, antiviral, antidiabetic, insecticidal and mosquito repellent, and enzyme inhibitory properties, etc. These findings provided promising lead compounds for drug discovery. Certain similar or identical compounds were found to be simultaneously present in both Bruguiera plants and their endophytes, and the phenomenon of their interaction relationship was discussed.

Abstract
SCOPE To assess the associations of dietary protein intake from different sources during pregnancy with maternal and umbilical cord plasma amino acid levels. METHODS AND RESULTS The study includes 216 pregnant women and 39 newborns from the Tongji Birth Cohort in Wuhan, China. The study examines the levels of 21 amino acids in maternal and cord plasma samples using ultra-performance liquid chromatography with tandem mass spectrometry. A significant positive relationship is observed between dietary protein intake from refined grains and maternal plasma cysteine levels. Dietary protein intake from dairy products is positively associated with maternal plasma levels of sulfur amino acid (mainly cystine), but negatively associated with maternal plasma levels of glutamic acid. In addition, the study observes that pre-pregnancy body mass index and parity may be potential determinants of maternal plasma amino acid levels, whereas a history of passive smoking during pregnancy is an important factor influencing cord plasma amino acid levels. CONCLUSIONS These findings suggest that dietary protein intakes from specific sources during pregnancy may affect maternal plasma levels of amino acids.

Abstract
Grafting onto pumpkin rootstock is widely applied in cucumber production to improve growth and yield, as well as to overcome soil-borne diseases and enhance resistance to abiotic stresses. In this study, we constructed the cucumber-pumpkin heterografts with the one-cotyledon grafting method, and examined the effects of heterografting on biomass allocation and sugar partitioning, with cucumber and pumpkin self-grafts used as control. Compared with cucumber self-grafts, heterografting onto pumpkin rootstock promoted photosynthesis in cucumber scion, and led to higher sucrose contents in the 1st true leaf (source) and newly emerged leaf (sink). Thereby, the scion part of heterografts accumulated more biomass than cucumber self-grafts. In contrast, when compared to pumpkin self-grafts, grafting with cucumber scion reduced root vigor and biomass but promoted cotyledon growth in pumpkin rootstock. The roots (sink) of heterografts contained less sucrose and hexoses, and showed reduced sucrose synthase (SuSy) and hexokinase (HXK) activities. However, the rootstock cotyledon (source) contained more sucrose and starch, and showed higher activities of HXK, cell-wall invertase (CWIN), and enzymes for starch synthesis and degradation. Furthermore, removal or shade of rootstock cotyledon led to reduced growth of root and scion. Silencing of CmoMEX1a gene in rootstock cotyledon inhibited maltose export and reduced root growth of heterografts. These results indicated that rootstock cotyledon, especially its starch content, played a buffering role in the growth regulation of cucumber-pumpkin heterografts. Taken together, our results provided a major contribution to our understanding of source-sink sugar partitioning and scion-rootstock growth balancing in cucumber-pumpkin heterografts.

Abstract
T lymphocytes are pivotal in adaptive immunity. The role of the trafficking protein particle complex (TRAPPC) in regulating T-cell development and homeostasis is unknown. Using CD4cre -Trappc1flox/flox (Trappc1 cKO) mice, we found that Trappc1 deficiency in T cells significantly decreased cell number of naive T cells in the periphery, whereas thymic T-cell development in Trappc1 cKO mice was identical as WT mice. In the culture assays and mouse models with adoptive transfer of the sorted WT (CD45.1+ CD45.2+ ) and Trappc1 cKO naive T cells (CD45.2+ ) to CD45.1+ syngeneic mice, Trappc1-deficient naive T cells showed significantly reduced survival ability compared with WT cells. RNA-seq and molecular studies showed that Trappc1 deficiency in naive T cells reduced protein transport from the endoplasmic reticulum to the Golgi apparatus, enhanced unfolded protein responses, increased P53 transcription, intracellular Ca2+ , Atf4-CHOP, oxidative phosphorylation, and lipid peroxide accumulation, and subsequently led to ferroptosis. Trappc1 deficiency in naive T cells increased ferroptosis-related damage-associated molecular pattern molecules like high mobility group box 1 or lipid oxidation products like prostaglandin E2, leukotriene B4, leukotriene C4, and leukotriene D4. Functionally, the culture supernatant of Trappc1 cKO naive T cells significantly promoted neutrophils to express inflammatory cytokines like TNFα and IL-6, which was rescued by lipid peroxidation inhibitor Acetylcysteine. Importantly, Trappc1 cKO mice spontaneously developed severe autoinflammatory disease 4 weeks after birth. Thus, intrinsic expression of Trappc1 in naive T cells plays an integral role in maintaining T-cell homeostasis to avoid proinflammatory naive T-cell death-caused autoinflammatory syndrome in mice. This study highlights the importance of the TRAPPC in T-cell biology.

Abstract
TiB2 nanoparticles with a bandgap of 0 eV were prepared, and the corresponding nonlinear optical response at 2.85 μm was investigated. Employing a TiB2 as a saturable absorber, a 2.85 μm pulsed Er:Lu2O3 crystal laser with an average output power of 1.2 W was achieved under a maximum pump power of 9.51 W. Laser pulses with durations of ~203 ns were delivered at a repetition rate of 154 kHz, which corresponds to a pulse energy of ~7.8 µJ and a peak power of 39.3 W. As far as we know, the result represents the highest average output power from all Q-switched Er:Lu2O3 crystal lasers.

Abstract
PURPOSE To study whether the history of induced abortion has an effect on the assisted reproduction outcomes in patients undergoing in vitro fertilization-embryo transfer (IVF-ET). METHODS 3045 patients who underwent IVF-ET in the Department of Human Reproductive Center of Renmin Hospital from January 2017 to June 2021. They were divided into two groups according to whether there was a history of induced abortion in the past, and the outcomes were compared between the two groups. RESULTS The clinical pregnancy rate in the group with induced abortion history was lower than that in the group without induced abortion history (63.1% vs 67.1%), but the difference was not statistically significant (P = 0.059). The spontaneous abortion rate in the group with induced abortion history was higher than that in the group without induced abortion history (14.9% vs 11.2%) (P = 0.044). The live birth rate in the group with induced abortion history was lower than that in the group without induced abortion history (52.8% vs 59.0%) (P = 0.006). Stepwise logistic regression analysis showed that endometrial thickness (OR = 0.928, 95% CI = 0.886 ~ 0.972, P = 0.002) and live birth rate (OR = 0.682, 95% CI = 0.495 ~ 0.939, P = 0.019) were negatively correlated with induced abortion history. The rate of spontaneous abortion (OR = 1.452, 95% CI = 1.042 ~ 2.024, P = 0.028) was positively correlated with the history of induced abortion. CONCLUSIONS The previous history of induced abortion is related to the outcomes of IVF /ICSI-ET, the endometrial thickness on HCG trigger day decreased, the risk of spontaneous abortion increased and the live birth rate decreased in patients with induced abortion history when undergoing IVF/ICSI-ET.

Abstract
BACKGROUND Exposure to general anesthesia influences neuronal functions during brain development. Recently, interneurons were found to be involved in developmental neurotoxicity by anesthetic exposure. But the underlying mechanism and long-term consequences remain elusive. METHODS Pregnant mice received 2.5% sevoflurane for 6-h on gestational day 14.5. Pentylenetetrazole (PTZ)-induced seizure, anxiety- and depression-like behavior tests were performed in 30- and 60-day-old male offspring. Cortical interneurons were labeled using Rosa26-EYFP/-; Nkx2.1-Cre mice. Immunofluorescence and electrophysiology were performed to determine the cortical interneuron properties. Q-PCR and in situ hybridization (ISH) were performed for the potential mechanism, and the finding was further validated by in utero electroporation (IUE). RESULTS In this study, we found that maternal sevoflurane exposure increased epilepsy susceptibility by using pentylenetetrazole (PTZ) induced-kindling models and enhanced anxiety- and depression-like behaviors in adolescent offspring. After sevoflurane exposure, the highly ordered cortical interneuron migration was disrupted in the fetal cortex. In addition, the resting membrane potentials of fast-spiking interneurons in the sevoflurane-treated group were more hyperpolarized in adolescence accompanied by an increase in inhibitory synapses. Both q-PCR and ISH indicated that CXCL12/CXCR4 signaling pathway downregulation might be a potential mechanism under sevoflurane developmental neurotoxicity which was further confirmed by IUE and behavioral tests. Although the above effects were obvious in adolescence, they did not persist into adulthood. CONCLUSIONS Our findings demonstrate that maternal anesthesia impairs interneuron migration through the CXCL12/CXCR4 signaling pathway, and influences the interneuron properties, leading to the increased epilepsy susceptibility in adolescent offspring. Our study provides a novel perspective on the developmental neurotoxicity of the mechanistic link between maternal use of general anesthesia and increased susceptibility to epilepsy.

Abstract
BACKGROUND Meningioma subtype is crucial in treatment planning and prognosis delineation, for grade 1 meningiomas. T2 relaxometry could provide detailed microscopic information but is often limited by long scanning times. PURPOSE To investigate the potential of T2 maps derived from multiple overlapping-echo detachment imaging (MOLED) for predicting meningioma subtypes and Ki-67 index, and to compare the diagnostic efficiency of two different region-of-interest (ROI) placements (whole-tumor and contrast-enhanced, respectively). STUDY TYPE Prospective. PHANTOM/SUBJECTS A phantom containing 11 tubes of MnCl2 at different concentrations, eight healthy volunteers, and 75 patients with grade 1 meningioma. FIELD STRENGTH/SEQUENCE 3 T scanner. MOLED, T2-weighted spin-echo sequence, T2-dark-fluid sequence, and postcontrast T1-weighted gradient echo sequence. ASSESSMENT Two ROIs were delineated: the whole-tumor area (ROI1) and contrast-enhanced area (ROI2). Histogram parameters were extracted from T2 maps. Meningioma subtypes and Ki-67 index were reviewed by a neuropathologist according to the 2021 classification criteria. STATISTICAL TESTS Linear regression, Bland-Altman analysis, Pearson's correlation analysis, independent t test, Mann-Whitney U test, Kruskal-Wallis test with Bonferroni correction, and multivariate logistic regression analysis with the P-value significance level of 0.05. RESULTS The MOLED T2 sequence demonstrated excellent accuracy for phantoms and volunteers (Meandiff = -1.29%, SDdiff = 1.25% and Meandiff = 0.36%, SDdiff = 2.70%, respectively), and good repeatability for volunteers (average coefficient of variance = 1.13%; intraclass correlation coefficient = 0.877). For both ROI1 and ROI2, T2 variance had the highest area under the curves (area under the ROC curve = 0.768 and 0.761, respectively) for meningioma subtyping. There was no significant difference between the two ROIs (P = 0.875). Significant correlations were observed between T2 parameters and Ki-67 index (r = 0.237-0.374). DATA CONCLUSION MOLED T2 maps can effectively differentiate between meningothelial, fibrous, and transitional meningiomas. Moreover, T2 histogram parameters were significantly correlated with the Ki-67 index. LEVEL OF EVIDENCE 1 TECHNICAL EFFICACY: Stage 2.

Abstract
Practices related to mitochondrial research have long been hindered by the presence of mitochondrial pseudogenes within the nuclear genome (NUMTs). Even though partially assembled human reference genomes like hg38 have included NUMTs compilation, the exhaustive NUMTs within the only complete reference genome (T2T-CHR13) remain unknown. Here, we comprehensively identified the fixed NUMTs within the reference genome using human pan-mitogenome (HPMT) from GeneBank. The inclusion of HPMT serves the purpose of establishing an authentic mitochondrial DNA (mtDNA) mutational spectrum for the identification of NUMTs, distinguishing it from the polymorphic variations found in NUMTs. Using HPMT, we identified approximately 10% of additional NUMTs in three human reference genomes under stricter thresholds. And we also observed an approximate 6% increase in NUMTs in T2T-CHR13 compared to hg38, including NUMTs on the short arms of chromosomes 13, 14, and 15 that were not assembled previously. Furthermore, alignments based on 20-mer from mtDNA suggested the presence of more mtDNA-like short segments within the nuclear genome, which should be avoided for short amplicon or cell free mtDNA detection. Finally, through the assay of transposase-accessible chromatin with high-throughput sequencing (ATAC-seq) on cell lines before and after mtDNA elimination, we concluded that NUMTs have a minimal impact on bulk ATAC-seq, even though 16% of sequencing data originated from mtDNA.

Abstract
Tamoxifen is one of the most effective therapeutic tools for estrogen receptor-positive (ER +) breast cancer. However, the intrinsic insensitivity and resistance to tamoxifen remains a significant hurdle for achieving optimal responses and curative therapy. In this study, we report that F-box and leucine-rich repeat protein 16 (FBXL16) is located in the mitochondria of ER + breast cancer cells. The mitochondrial FBXL16 plays an essential role in sustaining mitochondrial respiration and thereby regulates the sensitivity of ER + breast cancer cells to tamoxifen treatment. Importantly, high FBXL16 expression is significantly correlated with poor overall survival of ER + breast cancer patients. Moreover, mitochondrial inhibition phenocopies FBXL16 depletion in terms of sensitizing the ER + breast cancer cells to tamoxifen treatment. Together, our study demonstrates that FBXL16 acts as a novel regulator of tamoxifen sensitivity. Thus, targeting FBXL16 may serve as a promising approach for improving the therapeutic efficacy of tamoxifen in ER + breast cancer cells.

Abstract
BACKGROUND Endometrial cancer (EC) is one of the worldwide gynecological malignancies. Endoplasmic reticulum (ER) stress is the cellular homeostasis disturbance that participates in cancer progression. However, the mechanisms of ER Stress on EC have not been fully elucidated. METHOD The ER Stress-related genes were obtained from Gene Set Enrichment Analysis (GSEA) and GeneCards, and the RNA-seq and clinical data were downloaded from The Cancer Genome Atlas (TCGA). The risk signature was constructed by the Cox regression and the least absolute shrinkage and selection operator (LASSO) analysis. The significance of the risk signature and clinical factors were tested by time-dependent receiver operating characteristic (ROC) curves, and the selected were to build a nomogram. The immunity correlation was particularly analyzed, including the related immune cells, pathways, and immune checkpoints. Functional enrichment, potential chemotherapies, and in vitro validation were also conducted. RESULT An ER Stress-based risk signature, consisting of TRIB3, CREB3L3, XBP1, and PPP1R15A was established. Patients were randomly divided into training and testing groups with 1:1 ratio for subsequent calculation and validation. Based on risk scores, high- and low-risk subgroups were classified, and low-risk subgroup demonstrated better prognosis. The Area Under Curve (AUC) demonstrated a reliable predictive capability of the risk signature. The majority of significantly different immune cells and pathways were enriched more in low-risk subgroup. Similarly, several typical immune checkpoints, expressed higher in low-risk subgroup. Patients of the two subgroups responded differently to chemotherapies. CONCLUSION We established an ER Stress-based risk signature that could effectively predict EC patients' prognosis and their immune correlation.

Abstract
Altered mitochondrial function contributes greatly to pathogenesis and progression of colorectal cancer. In this study, we report a functional pool of Src homology 2 domain-containing F (SHF) in mitochondria controlling the response of colorectal cancer cells to radiation therapy. We found that elevated expression of SHF in cancer cells is essential for promoting mitochondrial function by increasing mitochondrial DNA copy number, thus reducing the sensitivity of colorectal cancer cells to radiation. Mechanistically, SHF binds to mitochondrial DNA and promotes POLG/SSBP1-mediated mitochondrial DNA synthesis. Importantly, SHF loss-mediated radiosensitization was phenocopied by depletion of mitochondrial DNA. Thus, our data demonstrate that mitochondrial SHF is an important regulator of radioresistance in colorectal cancer cells, identifying SHF as a promising therapeutic target to enhance radiotherapy efficacy in colorectal cancer.

Abstract
BACKGROUND Cirrhosis is a serious condition characterized by the replacement of healthy liver tissue with scar tissue, which can progress to liver failure if left untreated. Hepatocellular carcinoma (HCC) is a concerning complication of cirrhosis. It can be challenge to identify individuals with cirrhosis who are at high risk of developing HCC, particularly in the absence of known risk factors. METHODS In this study, statistical and bioinformatics methods were utilized to construct a protein-protein interaction network and identify disease-related hub genes. We analyzed two hub genes, CXCL8 and CCNB1, and developed a mathematical model to predict the likelihood of developing HCC in individuals with cirrhosis. We also investigated immune cell infiltration, functional analysis under ontology terms, pathway analysis, distinct clusters of cells, and protein-drug interactions. RESULTS The results indicated that CXCL8 and CCNB1 were associated with the development of cirrhosis-induced HCC. A prognostic model based on these two genes was able to predict the occurrence and survival time of HCC. In addition, the candidate drugs were also discovered based on our model. CONCLUSION The findings offer the potential for earlier detection of cirrhosis-induced HCC and provide a new instrument for clinical diagnosis, prognostication, and the development of immunological medications. This study also identified distinct clusters of cells in HCC patients using UMAP plot analysis and analyzed the expression of CXCL8 and CCNB1 within these cells, indicating potential therapeutic opportunities for targeted drug therapies to benefit HCC patients.

Abstract
The development of mammalian skeletal muscle is a highly complex process involving multiple molecular interactions. As a prevalent RNA modification, N6-methyladenosine (m6A) regulates the expression of target genes to affect mammalian development. Nevertheless, it remains unclear how m6A participates in the development of goat muscle. In this study, methyltransferase 3 (METTL3) was significantly enriched in goat longissimus dorsi (LD) tissue. In addition, the global m6A modification level and differentiation of skeletal muscle satellite cells (MuSCs) were regulated by METTL3. By performing mRNA-seq analysis, 8050 candidate genes exhibited significant changes in expression level after the knockdown of METTL3 in MuSCs. Additionally, methylated RNA immunoprecipitation sequencing (MeRIP-seq) illustrated that myocyte enhancer factor 2c (MEF2C) mRNA contained m6A modification. Further experiments demonstrated that METTL3 enhanced the differentiation of MuSCs by upregulating m6A levels and expression of MEF2C. Moreover, the m6A reader YTH N6-methyladenosine RNA binding protein C1 (YTHDC1) was bound and stabilized to MEF2C mRNA. The present study reveals that METTL3 enhances myogenic differentiation in MuSCs by regulating MEF2C and provides evidence of a post-transcriptional mechanism in the development of goat skeletal muscle.

Abstract
BACKGROUND The number of empty nest elderly in China has gradually increased in recent years. There is growing concern about the physical and mental health of this population as empty nest elderly are commonly at the risk of compromising health, home safety and quality of life. This study reported the health and well-being of empty nest elderly with regards to their health status, depression and satisfaction, lifestyle as compared to non-empty nest elderly in China. METHODS Data was collected from the 2018 follow-up interviews of China Health and Retirement Longitudinal Survey. We included 4,630 empty nest elderly and 6,188 non-empty nest elderly. Chi-square Test and Logistic Regression were used to compare the differences between these two groups. RESULTS As compared to the non-empty nest elderly, there was higher proportion of empty nest elderly who suffered from dyslipidemia, diabetes, chronic lung diseases, heart attack (27.0% vs. 25.0%; 16.6% vs. 15.1%; 19.4% vs. 16.4%; 26.3% vs. 23.4%, P < 0.05). The empty nest elderly had higher proportion of participants who drank more than once a month (25.3% vs. 23.9%, P < 0.05), who felt satisfied with their marriage (71.6% vs. 66.2%, P < 0.001), who were satisfied with their children's relationship (85.2% vs. 83.2%, P < 0.001). However, these significances disappeared in the Logistic Regression analysis (P > 0.05). CONCLUSION Our study showed that significant between-group difference was found between empty nest elderly and non-empty nest elderly in their health and wellbeing. However, disappearance of such difference in the multivariable analysis may indicate improved health and wellbeing among the empty nest elderly. Even though our study still suggested the importance of improving the health, lifestyles and family dynamics of the elderly and promoting the integration of health and social care for the elderly, especially among the empty nest elderly.

Abstract
BACKGROUND Depression is a prevalent mental health disorder with a complex etiology and substantial public health implications. Early identification of individuals at risk for depression is crucial for effective intervention and prevention efforts. This study aimed to develop a predictive model for depression by integrating demographic factors (age, race, marital status, income), lifestyle factors (sleep duration, physical activity), and physiological measures (hypertension, blood lead levels). A key objective was to explore the role of physical activity and blood lead levels as predictors of current depression risk. METHODS Data were extracted from the 2007-2014 National Health and Nutrition Examination Survey (NHANES). We applied a logistic regression analysis to these data to assess the predictive value of the above eight factors for depression to create the predictive model. RESULTS The predictive model had bootstrap-corrected c-indexes of 0.68 (95% CI, 0.67-0.70) and 0.66 (95% CI, 0.64-0.68) for the training and validation cohorts, respectively, and well-calibrated curves. As the risk of depression increased, the proportion of participants with 1.76 ~ 68.90 µg/L blood lead gradually increased, and the proportion of participants with 0.05 ~ 0.66 µg/L blood lead gradually decreased. In addition, the proportion of sedentary participants increased as the risk of depression increased. CONCLUSIONS This study developed a depression risk assessment model that incorporates physical activity and blood lead factors. This model is a promising tool for screening, assessing, and treating depression in the general population. However, because the corrected c-indices of the predictive model have not yet reached an acceptable threshold of 0.70, caution should be exercised when drawing conclusions. Further research is required to improve the performance of this model.

Abstract
BACKGROUND The effects of horizontal platelet-rich fibrin (H-PRF) bone block on the healing and immune response during sinus augmentation have not been fully investigated histologically at early time points. METHODS Eighteenth male New Zealand white rabbits underwent bilateral sinus augmentation and were divided into two groups: deproteinized bovine bone mineral (DBBM) alone and H-PRF + DBBM (H-PRF bone block) group. Maxilla samples were collected at 3, 7 and 14 days post sinus augmentation procedures and analyzed using histological staining for the number of inflammatory cells, new blood vessels and evidence for early osteoclast bone turnover/remodeling. Furthermore, the effects of H-PRF bone blocks on the migration of osteoblasts and THP-1 macrophages were evaluated using a Transwell assay in vitro. RESULTS A higher number of immune cells were found in the H-PRF bone block group at 3 and 7 days post-surgery when compared to the DBBM alone group,most notably in the regions close to the mucosal lining and bone plates. Furthermore, a significantly greater number of new blood vessel formations and early signs of osteoclast development were found in the H-PRF bone block group at 14 days. The in vitro transwell assay further confirmed that culture medium from H-PRF bone block markedly promote the migration of osteoblasts and THP-1 macrophages. CONCLUSIONS The findings from this study have shown that H-PRF bone block is capable of increasing early immune cell infiltration leading to the acceleration of neovascularization and speeding the process of bone metabolism in vivo following maxillary sinus grafting with DBBM.

Abstract
Alzheimer's disease (AD) is a globally prevalent neurodegenerative disorder, the underlying causes and mechanisms of which remain elusive. The emerging interest in the potential connection between gut microbes and AD prompted our study to investigate this field through bibliometric analysis. To examine research trends over the past decade, we collected relevant data using search terms associated with gut microbiota and AD from the Web of Science Core Collection. Our analysis involved various tools, including R (version 4.2.2), VOSviewer (version 1.6.18), CiteSpace software (version 6.2.R1), and an online bibliometric platform. Our findings identified a total of 1170 articles published between 2012 and 2022, indicating a consistent growth of research interest in this area. Notably, China significantly contributed with 40.7% (374) of the publications, signifying its prominent role in this field. Among the journals, the Journal of Alzheimer's Disease published the highest number of articles (57; 4.9%). In terms of author influence, Wang Y, with an H-index of 13, emerged as the most influential author. Additionally, Shanghai Jiaotong University was the most productive institution, accounting for 66 articles (5.6%). Through keyword analysis, we grouped high-frequency keywords into six clusters: gut microbiota, AD, neuroinflammation, gut-brain axis, oxidative stress, and chain fatty acids. Chain fatty acids, oxidative stress, and the gut-brain axis emerged as dominant research topics in the past five years. Recent studies have specifically focused on "nlrp3 inflammasome" and "clearance" (2020-2022), indicating shifting research interests within this field. This bibliometric analysis aims to provide insights into the evolving landscape of research on the gut microbiota and AD. Our results identify key research trends and themes while highlighting potential research gaps. The findings offer valuable perspectives for future investigations, advancing our understanding of AD and exploring potential therapeutic strategies.

Abstract
The accurate prediction of vehicle speed is crucial for the energy management of vehicles. The existing vehicle speed prediction (VSP) methods mainly focus on road vehicles and rarely on off-road vehicles. In this paper, a double-layer VSP method based on backpropagation neural network (BPNN) and long short-term memory (LSTM) for off-road vehicles is proposed. First of all, considering the motion characteristics of off-road vehicles, the VSP problem is established and the relationship between the variables in the problem is carefully analyzed. Then, the double-layer VSP framework is presented, which consists of speed prediction and information update layers. The speed prediction layer established by using LSTM is to predict vehicle speed in the horizon, and the information update layer built by BPNN is to update the prediction information. Finally, with the help of mining truck and loader operation scenarios, the proposed VSP method is compared with the analytical method, BPNN prediction method, and recurrent neural network (RNN) prediction method in terms of speed prediction accuracy. The results show that, under the premise of ensuring the real-time prediction performance, the average prediction error of the proposed BPNN-LSTM prediction method under two operation scenarios reduces by 48.14%, 35.82% and 30.09% compared with the other three methods, respectively. The proposed speed prediction method provides a new solution for predicting the speed of off-road vehicles, effectively improving the speed prediction accuracy.

Abstract
As drug carriers for cancer treatment, stimulus-responsive polymer nanomaterials are a major research focus. These nanocarriers respond to specific stimulus signals (e.g., pH, redox, hypoxia, enzymes, temperature, and light) to precisely control drug release, thereby improving drug uptake rates in cancer cells and reducing drug damage to normal cells. Therefore, we reviewed the research progress in the past 6 years and the mechanisms underpinning single and multiple stimulus-responsive polymer nanocarriers in tumour therapy. The advantages and disadvantages of various stimulus-responsive polymeric nanomaterials are summarised, and the future outlook is provided to provide a scientific and theoretical rationale for further research, development, and utilisation of stimulus-responsive nanocarriers.

Abstract
A 50-year-old man with a 15-year history of elevated blood glucose and an approximately 2-year history of diarrhea was admitted to the Peking Union Medical College Hospital. The initial diagnosis was type 2 diabetes. After repeated pancreatitis and pancreatoduodenectomy, severe pancreatic endocrine and exocrine dysfunction including alternating high and low blood glucose and fat diarrhea occurred. Tests for type 1 diabetes-related antibodies were all negative, C-peptide levels were substantially reduced, fat-soluble vitamin levels were reduced, and there was no obvious insulin resistance. Therefore, a diagnosis of pancreatic diabetes was clear. The patient was given small doses of insulin and supplementary pancreatin and micronutrients. Diarrhea was relieved and blood glucose was controlled. The purpose of this article is to raise clinicians' awareness of the possibility of pancreatic diabetes after pancreatitis or pancreatic surgery. Timely intervention and monitoring may reduce the occurrence of complications.

Abstract
To develop novel luminescent materials for optical temperature measurement, a series of Yb3+- and Er3+-doped Ca3Sc2Si3O12 (CSS) upconversion (UC) phosphors were synthesized by the sol-gel combustion method. The crystal structure, phase purity, and element distribution of the samples were characterized by powder X-ray diffraction and a transmission electron microscope (TEM). The detailed study of the photoluminescence emission spectra of the samples shows that the addition of Yb3+ can greatly enhance the emission of Er3+ by effective energy transfer. The prepared Yb3+ and Er3+ co-doped CSS phosphors exhibit green emission bands near 522 and 555 nm and red emission bands near 658 nm, which correspond to the 2H11/2→4I15/2, 4S3/2→4I15/2, and 4F9/2→4I15/2 transitions of Er3+, respectively. The temperature-dependent behavior of the CSS:0.2Yb3+,0.02Er3+ sample was carefully studied by the fluorescence intensity ratio (FIR) technique. The results indicate the excellent sensitivity of the sample, with a maximum absolute sensitivity of 0.67% K-1 at 500 K and a relative sensitivity of 1.34% K-1 at 300 K. We demonstrate here that the temperature measurement performance of FIR technology using the CSS:Yb3+,Er3+ phosphor is not inferior to that of infrared thermal imaging thermometers. Therefore, CSS:Yb3+,Er3+ phosphors have great potential applications in the field of optical thermometry.

Abstract
BRCA1 expression is highly regulated to prevent genomic instability and tumorigenesis. Dysregulation of BRCA1 expression correlates closely with sporadic basal-like breast cancer and ovarian cancer. The most significant characteristic of BRCA1 regulation is periodic expression fluctuation throughout the cell cycle, which is important for the orderly progression of different DNA repair pathways throughout the various cell cycle phases and for further genomic stability. However, the underlying mechanism driving this phenomenon is poorly understood. Here, we demonstrate that RBM10-mediated RNA alternative splicing coupled to nonsense-mediated mRNA decay (AS-NMD), rather than transcription, determines the periodic fluctuations in G1/S-phase BRCA1 expression. Furthermore, AS-NMD broadly regulates the expression of period genes, such as DNA replication-related genes, in an uneconomical but more rapid manner. In summary, we identified an unexpected posttranscriptional mechanism distinct from canonical processes that mediates the rapid regulation of BRCA1 as well as other period gene expression during the G1/S-phase transition and provided insights into potential targets for cancer therapy.

Abstract
IL52 is a valuable introgression line obtained from interspecific hybridization between cultivated cucumber (Cucumis sativus L., 2n = 14) and the wild relative species C. hystrix Chakr. (2n = 24). IL52 exhibits high resistance to a number of diseases, including downy mildew, powdery mildew, and angular leaf spot. However, the ovary- and fruit-related traits of IL52 have not been thoroughly investigated. Here, we conducted quantitative trait loci (QTL) mapping for 11 traits related to ovary size, fruit size, and flowering time using a previously developed 155 F7:8 RIL population derived from a cross between CCMC and IL52. In total, 27 QTL associated with the 11 traits were detected, distributed on seven chromosomes. These QTL explained 3.61% to 43.98% of the phenotypic variance. Notably, we identified a major-effect QTL (qOHN4.1) on chromosome 4 associated with the ovary hypanthium neck width and further delimited it into a 114-kb candidate region harboring 13 candidate genes. Furthermore, the QTL qOHN4.1 is co-localized with the QTL detected for ovary length, mature fruit length, and fruit neck length, all residing within the consensus QTL FS4.1, suggesting a plausible pleiotropic effect.

Abstract
To investigate the effect of emollient on atopic march in a murine model of atopic dermatitis (AD). Following induction of AD with topical calcipotriol (MC903) and ovalbumin (OVA), one group of mice was treated topically with a linoleic acid-ceramide-containing emollient, while mice without emollient treatment served as disease controls. After 28 days, clinical, histological and transcriptomic analyses were performed in the skin lesions and the lung as well as serum cytokine levels. Treatments of mice with MC903 and OVA induced a typical phenotype of AD, accompanied by increased expression levels of Th2 and basophil-related genes in the lung. Topical emollients markedly decreased the severity of skin lesions and inflammatory cell infiltration. Moreover, emollient treatments significantly downregulated expression levels of AD-related genes (286 of 1450 differentially expressed genes), including those related to innate inflammation (S100a8/a9, Il1b, Defb3/6, Mmp12), chemokines (Cxcl1/3, Ccl3/4) and epidermal permeability barrier (Krt2/6b/80, Serpinb12, Lce3e, Sprr2), etc. Downregulated genes were enriched in mitochondrial OXPHOS-related pathways, while upregulated genes were mainly enriched in axon guidance and tight junctions. Moreover, topical emollient treatments decreased total serum levels of IL-4, along with substantial reductions in IgE and thymic stromal lymphopoietin (TSLP) levels. Furthermore, 187 of 275 upregulated genes in lung tissue were also significantly downregulated, including those involved in leucocyte chemotaxis (Ccl9, Ccr2, Retnlg, Ccl3, Cxcl10, Il1r2, etc.) and basophil activation (Mcpt8, Cd200r3, Fcer1a, Ms4a2). In conclusion, topical emollient not only reduces skin inflammation, but also mitigates systemic inflammation by decreasing TSLP and IgE levels. Moreover, topical emollient reduces chemokine production and basophil infiltration and activation in the lung.

Abstract
Microbial communities are highly dynamic and sensitive to changes in the environment. Thus, microbiome data are highly susceptible to batch effects, defined as sources of unwanted variation that are not related to and obscure any factors of interest. Existing batch effect correction methods have been primarily developed for gene expression data. As such, they do not consider the inherent characteristics of microbiome data, including zero inflation, overdispersion and correlation between variables. We introduce new multivariate and non-parametric batch effect correction methods based on Partial Least Squares Discriminant Analysis (PLSDA). PLSDA-batch first estimates treatment and batch variation with latent components, then subtracts batch-associated components from the data. The resulting batch-effect-corrected data can then be input in any downstream statistical analysis. Two variants are proposed to handle unbalanced batch x treatment designs and to avoid overfitting when estimating the components via variable selection. We compare our approaches with popular methods managing batch effects, namely, removeBatchEffect, ComBat and Surrogate Variable Analysis, in simulated and three case studies using various visual and numerical assessments. We show that our three methods lead to competitive performance in removing batch variation while preserving treatment variation, especially for unbalanced batch $\times $ treatment designs. Our downstream analyses show selections of biologically relevant taxa. This work demonstrates that batch effect correction methods can improve microbiome research outputs. Abstract
Soil organic carbon (SOC) plays an essential role in sequestrating anthropogenic CO2 emissions and mitigating climate change. Hence, accurate knowledge of the SOC dynamics and its controlling factors is a key part of the soil carbon cycling. Slessarev et al. (2022) question the major role of initial SOC in mediating changes in SOC, and illustrate the possible statistical artifacts that might be erroneously interpreted as causal. Slessarev and colleagues' insights make an important advance in the statistical evaluation of the regression problems in SOC, yielding more accurate inference.

Abstract
With the increasing number of tourists in recent years, ensuring the safety of visitors in tourist attractions has become an enormous challenge for safety management. At present, many experiments have been conducted to study pedestrian dynamics, but empirical data on tourists' movement state under different weather conditions are still few. Therefore, a series of field experiments were conducted to analyze the effect of external weather and temperature on pedestrians' movement characteristics. The results show that pedestrians are more concentrated in the middle and inner tracks during the turning process to seek the shortest path on rainy days. Moreover, it is found that pedestrians speed up under the conditions with low (below 10 °C) and high (over 30 °C) temperatures. The average speed of pedestrians is 0.677 m/s as the temperature is below 0 °C, which is much higher than the average speed of pedestrians in other temperature ranges. In addition, the speed of pedestrians changed more dramatically under the low-temperature conditions. It is hoped that this research can provide a reference for crowd control and rational design of pedestrian facilities.

Abstract
BACKGROUND The serum TSH level of PCOS patients was higher than that of the general female population. For patients with thyroid dysfunction, the abnormal TSH level is negatively related to the outcomes of assisted reproductive technology, but for PCOS patients with normal thyroid function, the effect of TSH level on outcomes of in vitro fertilization has not been reported. In this study, PCOS patients with normal thyroid function were included in this study to evaluate the effect of TSH on the outcomes of IVF-ET. METHODS A retrospective cohort study was conducted to analyze the clinical data of 3190 patients who underwent IVF-ET in the Department of Human Reproductive Center of Renmin Hospital Hubei University of Medicine from January 2017 to July 2021, including 594 PCOS patients and 2595 non PCOS patients. The IVF-ET outcomes between the two groups were compared; Multi-factor linear regression analysis was used to analyze the correlation between the related variables and the oocyte maturation of PCOS patients; The ROC curve of the effect of TSH on oocyte maturation in PCOS patients was drawn. The PCOS patients were divided into TSH < 2.98 group (n = 454) and TSH ≥ 2.98 group (n = 141) according to ROC threshold TSH 2.98, and the outcomes were compared. RESULTS TSH level in PCOS group was significantly higher than that in non-PCOS group (2.42 ± 0.86 vs 2.00 ± 0.89 UU / ml, P < 0.01), and the oocyte maturation rate and 2PN fertilization rate in PCOS group were lower than those in non-PCOS group (90.9% vs 92.4%, P = 0.02) (84.57% vs 86.77%, P = 0.02). There was no significant difference in cleavage rate and high-quality embryo rate between the two groups (P > 0.05); There was no difference in clinical pregnancy rate, abortion rate, ectopic pregnancy rate and live birth rate between the two groups (P > 0.05). Multi-factor linear regression analysis showed that TSH was negatively correlated with oocyte maturation in PCOS patients [β = -0.124, P = 0.013,95%CI (-0.027 ~ -0.003)]; The oocyte maturation rate in TSH < 2.98 group was significantly higher than that in TSH ≥ 2.98 group (91.7% vs 88.2%, P = 0.001). CONCLUSION The TSH level of PCOS patients with normal thyroid function is higher than that of normal people, and it is negatively correlated with the oocyte maturation in in-vitro fertilization. The ROC curve showed that when TSH > 2.98uIU/ml, the possibility of immature oocytes was higher (specificity 28.9%, sensitivity 83.0%).

Abstract
ARFs in plants mediate auxin signaling transduction and regulate growth process. To determine genome-wide characterization of ARFs family in melon (Cucumis melo L.), ARFs were identified via analysis of information within the melon genomic database, and bioinformatic analyses were performed using various types of software. Based on different treatment methods involving dipping with the growth regulator Fengchanji No. 2 and artificial pollination, Jingmi No. 11 melon was used as the test material, and melon plants with unpollinated ovaries served as controls. The expression of ARFs during the early development of melon was analyzed via qRT-PCR. Seventeen genes that encode ARF proteins were identified in the melon genome for the first time. The expression of these ARFs differed in different tissues. The expression levels of CmARF2, CmARF16-like, CmARF18-like2, and CmARF19-like were especially high in melon fruits. The expression of ARFs during the early development of melon fruits differed in response to the different treatments, which suggested that CmARF9, CmARF16-like, CmARF19-like, CmARF19, CmARF1, CmARF2, CmARF3, and CmARF5 may be associated with melon fruit growth during early development. Interestingly, the increase in the transverse diameter of fruits treated with growth regulators was significantly greater than that of fruits resulting from artificial pollination, while the increase in the longitudinal diameter of the fruits resulting from artificial pollination was significantly greater.

Abstract
Pea (Pisum sativum L.), as a major source of plant protein, is becoming one of the major cultivated crop species worldwide. In pea, the pericarp is an important determinant of the morphological characteristics and seed yield. To investigate the molecular mechanism of pericarp elongation as well as sucrose and starch accumulation in the pods of different pea cultivars, we performed transcriptomic analysis of the pericarp of two types of pea cultivar (vegetable pea and grain pea) using RNA-seq. A total of 239.44 Gb of clean sequence data were generated, and were aligned to the reference genome of Pisum sativum L. In the two samples, 1935 differentially expressed genes (DEGs) were identified. Among these DEGs, three antioxidant enzyme superoxide dismutase (SOD) were detected to have higher expression levels in the grain pea pericarps at the pod-elongating stages. Otherwise, five peroxidase (POD)-encoding genes were detected to have lower expression levels in the vegetative pericarps at the development stage of pea pod growth. Furthermore, genes related to starch and sucrose metabolism in the pea pod, such as SUS, INV, FBA, TPI, ADPase, SBE, SSS, and GBSS, were found to be differentially expressed. The RNA-seq data were validated through real-time quantitative RT-PCR of 13 randomly selected genes. Our findings provide the gene expression profile of, as well as differential expression information on, the two pea cultivars, which will lay the foundation for further studies on pod development and nutrition accumulation in the pea and provide valuable information for pea cultivar improvement.

Abstract
BACKGROUND The fragmentation of health insurance schemes in China has undermined equity in access to health care. To achieve universal health coverage by 2020, the Chinese government has decided to consolidate three basic medical insurance schemes. This study aims to evaluate the effects of integrating Urban and Rural Residents Basic Medical Insurance schemes on health care utilization and its equity in China. METHODS The data for the years before (2013) and after (2015) the integration were obtained from the China Health and Retirement Longitudinal Study. Respondents in pilot provinces were considered as the treatment group, and those in other provinces were the control group. Difference-in-difference method was used to examine integration effects on probability and frequency of health care visits. Subgroup analysis across regions of residence (urban/rural) and income groups and concentration index were used to examine effects on equity in utilization. RESULTS The integration had no significant effects on probability of outpatient visits (β = 0.01, P > 0.05), inpatient visits (β = 0.01, P > 0.05), and unmet hospitalization needs (β =0.01, P > 0.05), while it had significant and positive effects on number of outpatient visits (β = 0.62, P < 0.05) and inpatient visits (β = 0.39, P < 0.01). Moreover, the integration had significant and positive effects on number of outpatient visits (β = 0.77, P < 0.05) and inpatient visits (β = 0.49, P < 0.01) for rural residents but no significant effects for urban residents. Furthermore, the integration led to an increase in the frequency of inpatient care utilization for the poor (β = 0.78, P < 0.05) among the piloted provinces but had no significant effects for the rich (β = 0.25, P > 0.05). The concentration index for frequency of inpatient visits turned into negative direction in integration group, while that in control group increased by 0.011. CONCLUSIONS The findings suggest that the integration of fragmented health insurance schemes could promote access to and improve equity in health care utilization. Successful experiences of consolidating health insurance schemes in pilot provinces can provide valuable lessons for other provinces in China and other countries with similar fragmented schemes.

Abstract
INTRODUCTION Primary healthcare (PHC) serves as the cornerstone for the attainment of universal health coverage (UHC). Efforts to promote UHC should focus on the expansion of access and on healthcare quality. However, robust quality evidence has remained scarce in China. Common quality assessment methods such as chart abstraction, patient rating and clinical vignette use indirect information that may not represent real practice. This study will send standardised patients (SP or healthy person trained to consistently simulate the medical history, physical symptoms and emotional characteristics of a real patient) unannounced to PHC providers to collect quality information and represent real practice. METHODS AND ANALYSIS 1981 SP-clinician visits will be made to a random sample of PHC providers across seven provinces in China. SP cases will be developed for 10 tracer conditions in PHC. Each case will include a standard script for the SP to use and a quality checklist that the SP will complete after the clinical visit to indicate diagnostic and treatment activities performed by the clinician. Patient-centredness will be assessed according to the Patient Perception of Patient-Centeredness Rating Scale by the SP. SP cases and the checklist will be developed through a standard protocol and assessed for content, face and criterion validity, and test-retest and inter-rater reliability before its full use. Various descriptive analyses will be performed for the survey results, such as a tabulation of quality scores across geographies and provider types. ETHICS AND DISSEMINATION This study has been reviewed and approved by the Institutional Review Board of the School of Public Health of Sun Yat-sen University (#SYSU 2017-011). Results will be actively disseminated through print and social media, and SP tools will be made available for other researchers.

Abstract
In this study, a novel non-invasive and contactless microwave sensor using a square substrate integrated waveguide (SIW) re-entrant cavity is proposed for complex permittivity measurement of chemical solutions. The working principle of this sensor is based on cavity perturbation technique, in which the resonant properties of cavity are utilized as signatures to extract the dielectric information of liquid under test (LUT). A winding microfluidic channel is designed and embedded in the gap region of the cavity to obtain a strong interaction between the induced electric field and LUT, thus achieving a high sensitivity. Also, a mathematical predictive model which quantitatively associates the resonant properties of the sensor with the dielectric constant of LUT is developed through numerical analysis. Using this predictive model, quick and accurate extraction of the complex permittivity of LUT can be easily realized. The performance of this sensor is then experimentally validated by four pure chemicals (hexane, ethyl acetate, DMSO and water) together with a set of acetone/water mixtures in various concentrations. Experimental results demonstrate that the designed sensor is capable of characterizing the complex permittivities of various liquids with an accuracy of higher than 96.76% (compared with the theoretical values obtained by Debye relaxation equations), and it is also available for quantifying the concentration ratio of a given binary mixture.

Abstract
Magnetic hyperthermia with the treating temperature range of 41-46 °C is an alternative therapy for cancer treatment. In this article, lanthanum strontium manganates (La1-x Sr x MnO3, 0.25 ≤ × ≤ 0.35) magnetic nanoparticles coated by hyaluronic acid (HA) which possesses the ability of targeting tumor cells were prepared by a simple hydrothermal method combined with a high-energy ball milling technique. The crystal structure, morphology, magnetic properties of the HA-coated magnetic nanoparticles (MNPs), and their heating ability under alternating magnetic field were investigated. It was found the HA-coated La0.7Sr0.3MnO3, with particle diameter of ~100 nm, Curie temperature of 45 °C at a concentration 6 mg/ml, gave the optimal induction heating results. The heating temperature saturates at 45.7 °C, and the ESAR is 5.7 × 10-3 W/g · kHz · (kA/m2) which is much higher than other reported results.

Abstract
Salicylic acid (SA) is an important phytohormone that plays vital regulatory roles in plant growth, development, and stress responses. However, studies on the molecular mechanism of SA, especially during the early SA responses, are lagging behind. In this study, we initiated a comprehensive isobaric tag for relative and absolute quantitation (iTRAQ)-based proteomic analysis to explore the early and late SA-responsive proteins in leaves of cucumber (Cucumis sativus L.) seedlings. Upon SA application through the roots, endogenous SA accumulated in cucumber leaves. By assaying the changes in marker gene expression and photosynthetic rate, we collected samples at 12 h and 72 h post treatment (hpt) to profile the early and late SA responsiveness, respectively. The iTRAQ assay followed by tandem mass spectrometry revealed 135 differentially expressed proteins (DEPs) at 12 hpt and 301 DEPs at 72 hpt. The functional categories for these SA-responsive proteins included in a variety of biochemical processes, including photosynthesis, redox homeostasis, carbohydrate and energy metabolism, lipid metabolism, transport, protein folding and modification, proteolysis, cell wall organization, and the secondary phenylpropanoid pathway. Conclusively, based on the abundant changes of these DEPs, together with their putative functions, we proposed a possible SA-responsive protein network. It appears that SA could elicit reactive oxygen species (ROS) production via enhancing the photosynthetic electron transferring, and then confer some growth-promoting and stress-priming effects on cells during the late phase, including enhanced photosynthesis and ROS scavenging, altered carbon metabolic flux for the biosynthesis of amino acids and nucleotides, and cell wall reorganization. Overall, the present iTRAQ assay provides higher proteome coverage and deepened our understanding of the molecular basis of SA-responses.
