Abstract
Posterior eye disorders, such as age-related macular degeneration, diabetic retinopathy, and glaucoma, have a significant impact on human quality of life and are the primary cause of age-related retinal diseases among adults. There is a pressing need for innovative topical approaches to treat posterior eye disorders, as current methods often rely on invasive procedures with inherent risks. Limited success was attained in the realm of topical ophthalmic delivery through non-invasive means. Additionally, there exists a dearth of literature that delves into the potential of this approach for drug delivery and theranostic purposes, or that offers comprehensive design strategies for nanocarrier developers to surmount the significant physiological ocular barriers. This review offers a thorough and up-to-date state-of-the-art overview of 40 studies on therapeutic loaded nanocarriers and theranostic devices that, to the best of our knowledge, represent all successful works that reached posterior eye segments through a topical non-invasive administration. Most importantly, based on the successful literature studies, this review provides a comprehensive summary of the potential design strategies that can be implemented during nanocarrier development to overcome each ocular barrier.

Abstract
With the increasing popularity of photocatalytic technology and the highly growing issues of energy scarcity and environmental pollution, there is an increasing interest in extremely efficient photocatalytic systems. The widespread immense attention and applicability of Nb2O5 photocatalysts can be attributed to their multiple benefits, including strong redox potentials, non-toxicity, earth abundance, corrosion resistance, and efficient thermal and chemical stability. However, the large-scale application of Nb2O5 is currently impeded by the barriers of rapid recombination loss of photo-activated electron/hole pairs and the inadequacy of visible light absorption. To overcome these constraints, plentiful design strategies have been directed at modulating the morphology, electronic band structure, and optical properties of Nb2O5. The current review offers an extensive analysis of Nb2O5-based photocatalysts, with a particular emphasis on crystallography, synthetic methods, design strategies, and photocatalytic mechanisms. Finally, an outline of future research directions and challenges in developing Nb2O5-based materials with excellent photocatalytic performance is presented.

Abstract
Metal protection of offshore equipment is very complicated owing to the complex marine environment. Photocathodic protection (PCP) is one of the popular research topics in marine metal protection. The protection efficiency of photoanode depends largely on the photoelectric properties of semiconductor materials, viz. the process of charge separation, charge migration, and light absorption. In this article, the enhancement strategies, photoelectrochemical properties, and electron transfer mechanisms of different composites for PCP were reviewed and highlighted. Some photoanodes with unusual and striking properties were emphasized. In addition, the outlooks and challenges of the application of PCP and the design of photoanodes materials are proposed.

Abstract
Due to the alarming developing rate of multidrug-resistant bacterial pathogens, the development and modification of antimicrobial peptides (AMPs) are unprecedentedly active. Despite the fact that considerable efforts have been expended on the discovery and design strategies of AMPs, the clinical translation of peptide antibiotics remains inadequate. A large number of articles and reviews credited the limited success of AMPs to their poor stability in the biological environment, particularly their poor proteolytic stability. In the past forty years, various design strategies have been used to improve the proteolytic stability of AMPs, such as sequence modification, cyclization, peptidomimetics, and nanotechnology. Herein, we focus our discussion on the progress made in improving the proteolytic stability of AMPs and the principle, successes, and limitations of various anti-proteolytic design strategies. It is of prospective significance to extend current insights into the degradation-related inactivation of AMPs and also alleviate/overcome the problem.

An analysis of design strategies for circular economy through life cycle assessment. ENVIRONMENTAL MONITORING AND ASSESSMENT 2022; 194:180. Abstract
The goal of pursuing the circular economy (CE) is spreading more and more in industry, also driven by the introduction of new regulations, considerably affecting product design. However, a quantitative and rigorous evaluation of the environmental impacts of the results obtained by different design strategies used to implementing CE is missing in the literature. Those available only evaluate certain aspects of the life cycle of few products, belonging to specific application fields, in a qualitative way or they refer only to the global warming potential. This study provides a quantitative assessment of the environmental impacts reductions arising from the application of some common design strategies for implementing different CE options (e.g. reuse, waste to energy, remanufacturing), by using some standard indicators. The results were obtained by manually analysing 156 selected case studies of comparative life cycle assessment (LCA), extracted from 136 scientific articles. In them, the environmental impacts of design solutions for CE are compared with those of other solutions were wastes are not exploited. The obtained results have been used to evaluate the different design strategies for CE and to hierarchize them based on environmental sustainability of the solutions associated with them. In addition, an economic evaluation of the strategies, based on the life cycle costing methodology and exploiting the data available in the same articles, was also provided. Among the main achievements, it was found that the hierarchy of the CE options, pursued by the design strategies, to improve environmental sustainability is different from that provided by other studies. In addition, the environmental benefits associated with the different CE options strictly depend by the applied design strategies and the considered products.

Abstract
As the severe damage of phosphate enrichment in the water ecosystem and the supply shortage of phosphate rock, developing an efficient method for the removal and recycling of phosphate from wastewater is of great significance. To achieve this goal, adsorption technology has been widely investigated, and various adsorbents were developed. Among them, the biomass-derived adsorbents including biomass-derived carbon-based materials, biomass-based anion exchangers and metal-biomass composites have attracted increasing attention over the past years due to the low cost, abundant renewable raw materials and environmental friendliness. However, different adsorbents usually exhibit variable adsorption performances for phosphate, which highly depends on their design strategies, preparation methods and potential adsorption mechanisms. Thus, this review comprehensively summarizes the recent researches on the removal and recycling of phosphate from wastewater using the biomass-derived adsorbents. Especially, the design strategies, preparation methods, adsorption performances and mechanisms of these reported biomass-derived adsorbents are discussed in detail. Moreover, as the significant strategies to recover and recycling phosphate, the elution and direct use of phosphate-loaded adsorbents as fertilizers are also presented. Although the excellent adsorption performance has been obtained, some challenges are still existing, which should be given more attention in the following researches to facilitate the development and industrial application of biomass-derived adsorbents.

Abstract
Hybrid molecules, furnished by combining two or more pharmacophores is an emerging concept in the field of medicinal chemistry and drug discovery that has attracted substantial traction in the past few years. Naturally occurring scaffolds such as coumarins display a wide spectrum of pharmacological activities including anticancer, antibiotic, antidiabetic and others, by acting on multiple targets. In this view, various coumarin-based hybrids possessing diverse medicinal attributes were synthesized in the last five years by conjugating coumarin moiety with other therapeutic pharmacophores. The current review summarizes the recent development (2014 and onwards) of these pharmacologically active coumarin hybrids and demonstrates rationale behind their design, structure-activity relationships (SAR) and mechanistic studies performed on these hybrid molecules. This review will be beneficial for medicinal chemist and chemical biologist, and in general to the drug discovery community and will facilitate the synthesis and development of novel, potent coumarin hybrid molecules serving as lead molecules for the treatment of complex disorders.

Abstract
Microfluidics has been an important method in providing answers to a wide variety of research questions in chemistry, biochemistry, and biology. Microfluidic designers benefit from instructional textbooks describing foundational principles and practices in developing microfluidic devices; however, these texts do not offer guidance about how to generate design concepts for microfluidic devices. Research on design in related fields, such as mechanical engineering, documents the difficulties engineers face when attempting to generate novel ideas. For microfluidic device designers, support during idea generation may lead to greater exploration of potential innovations in design. To investigate successful idea generation in microfluidics, we analyzed successful microfluidic US patents, selecting those with the key word "microfluidic" over a 2-year period. After analyzing the features and functions of 235 patents, we identified 36 distinct design strategies in microfluidic devices. We document each strategy, and demonstrate their usefulness in a concept generation study of practitioners in microfluidic design. While some of the identified design strategies may be familiar to microfluidic designers, exposure to this large set of strategies helped participants generate more diverse, creative, and unique microfluidic design concepts, which are considered best practices in idea generation.
