ACUTE AND CHRONIC ENTEROTOXIN ENTERITIS

1. Dogs develop severe gastrointestinal symptoms in response to intraintestinal administration of staphylococcal enterotoxin. These symptoms are salivation, vomiting, and diarrhea. 2. Staphylococcal enterotoxin induces acute enteritis marked by edema, hyperemia, round cell infiltration, mucosal exudation, and destruction of intestinal villi. 3. Prolonged administration of enterotoxin into the lumen of the intestine produced thickening of the entire bowel wall, edema, dilatation of the lymphatics, and exaggeration of submucous lymphoid nodules. The hypertrophy of the lymphoid nodules is visible, in the gross, as enlarged longitudinal mucosal ridges. This abnormality is arranged in skip areas, not dissimilar to those observed in human regional enteritis. 4. Chronic enterotoxin enteritis is associated with mesenteric lymph node hypertrophy. 5. The intestinal mucosa shows minute ulcerations, loss of villi, submucous fibrosis, and evidence of chronic inflammation.

EPIZOOTIOLOGY OF MINK ENTERITIS: 3. CARRIER STATE IN MINK

The MEV carrier state in mink was studied and evidence that mink may carry the virus and excreted it in feces over a period of a year is presented. The significance of the carrier state is discussed especially in regard to the epizootiology of the disease.

EPIZOOTIOLOGY ON MINK ENTERITIS. II. MUSCA DOMESTICA L AS A POSSIBLE VECTOR OF VIRUS

The significance of the house fly M. domestica L as a vector of ME was studied. MEV was transmitted from infected to susceptible mink by flies having unlimited contact with both. Disease was also induced by feeding infected flies to susceptible mink.

SMALL BOWEL ULCERATION ASSOCIATED WITH ENTERIC-COATED POTASSIUM CHLORIDE AND HYDROCHLOROTHIAZIDE

Three cases of intestinal obstruction due to solitary localized ulceration, inflammation and stenosis of the small bowel are described. All three patients had been treated with a pill containing hydrochlorothiazide and an enteric-coated centre of potassium chloride. The occurrence of this lesion in these patients, and in similar cases reported from other centres, suggests that such a combination should not be prescribed.
