Exploring the Potential of Metal-Organic Frameworks for Cryogenic Helium-Based Gas Gap Heat Switches via High-Throughput Computational Screening

With the advantages of a long lifetime and high reliability, gas gap heat switches (GGHSs) are attractive in many thermal management applications, especially in space-borne cryogenic systems. The performance of a GGHS is significantly affected by the adsorption characteristics of the adsorbent in the sorption pump. Compared with the commonly used adsorbent in the GGHSs (activated carbon), metal-organic frameworks (MOFs) have larger surface areas, higher pore volumes, and exceptional tunability, which motivates this study to explore their potential for application in cryogenic GGHSs. To this end, two performance metrics, the required volume of adsorbent (vsor) and total input heat (qtot), were computed for about 6000 MOFs via molecular simulations and compared with those of activated carbon. It is found that over 2300 MOFs possess a smaller vsor than activated carbon, and the smallest vsor of MOFs is about 12.7% of that of activated carbon. vsor and qtot generally change in the same direction, which implies it is possible to reduce both parameters simultaneously by choosing a suitable MOF. Structure-performance analysis reveals that 1/vsor consistently increases first and then decreases with pore limiting diameter, largest cavity diameter, available pore volume, accessible surface area, helium void fraction, and bulk density. Descriptor ranges corresponding to high-performing MOFs were identified based on Precision-Recall analysis. Notably, Zr-containing MOFs are particularly likely to have smaller vsor values than activated carbon. It is anticipated that the promising MOFs identified by this study will motivate further experimental investigations, and the insights into structure-performance relationships can serve to guide the rational design of novel MOF candidates for GGHSs.

Effect of Intermittent Low-Pressure Radiofrequency Helium Cold Plasma Treatments on Rice Gelatinization, Fatty Acid, and Hygroscopicity

To establish the safe and reproducible effects of cold plasma (CP) technology on food products, this study evaluated the gelatinization parameters, fatty acid profile, and hygroscopic properties of rice grains repeatedly treated with low-pressure radiofrequency (RF) helium CP (13.56 MHz, 140 Pa, 120 W-20s, 0-4 times, and 300 g sample). Compared with the untreated (zero times) sample, with an increase in CP treatment times from one to four on rice, the water contact angle and cooking time decreased, while the water absorption rate and freshness index increased, and the pH value remained unchanged. CP repeating treatments essentially had no effect on the gelatinization enthalpy, but significantly increased the peak temperature of gelatinization. From the pasting profile of rice that has been repeatedly CP treated, the peak, breakdown, and setback viscosities in flour paste decreased. CP repeating treatments on rice did not change the short-range molecular order of starch. Compared with the untreated sample, the first helium CP treatment maintained the content of C18:1n9c, C18:2n6c, and C18:3n3, but the second to fourth CP treatment significantly decreased contents of these fatty acids (FAs) as the C18:0 content increased. The first three CP treatments can increase the water and sucrose solvent retention capacity in rice flours. CP repeatedly treated rice first exhibits the similar monolayer water content and solid surface area of water sorption. Principal component analysis shows that contact angle, pasting parameters, and fatty acid profile in milled rice are quite sensitive to CP treatment. Results support that the effect of low-pressure RF 120W helium CP treatment 20 s on rice grains is perdurable, and the improvement of CP intermittent treatments on rice cooking and pasting properties is an added benefit, and the hygroscopic properties of rice was kept.

Adsorption of N, He and Ne on CGe nanoribbons for sensing and optoelectronic applications

Research into nanomaterials yields numerous exceptional applications in contemporary science and technology. The subject of this investigation is a one-dimensional nanostructure, six atoms wide, featuring hydrogen-functionalized edges. The theoretical foundation of this study relies on Density Functional Theory (DFT) and is executed through the utilization of the Vienna Ab initio Simulation Package (VASP). The outcomes demonstrate the stability of adsorption configurations, along with the preservation of a hexagonal honeycomb lattice. The pristine configuration, characterized by a wide bandgap, is well-suited for optoelectronic applications, whereas adsorption configurations find their application in gas sensing. Nitrogen (N) adsorption transforms the semiconducting system into a semimetallic one, with the spin-up state showing semiconductor characteristics and the spin-down state exhibiting metallic attributes. The intricate multi-orbital hybridization is explored through the analysis of partial states. While the pristine system remains non-magnetic, N adsorption introduces a magnetic moment of 0.588 μB. The examination of charge density differences indicates a significant charge transfer from N to the CGe substrate surface. Optical properties are systematically investigated, encompassing the dielectric function, absorption coefficient and electron-hole density. Notably, the real part of the dielectric function exhibits negative values, a result that holds promise for future communication applications.

Evaluation of the Double-Tracer Gas Single-Breath Washout Test in a Pediatric Field Study

BACKGROUND

The early life origins of chronic pulmonary diseases are thought to arise in peripheral small airways. Predictors of ventilation inhomogeneity, a proxy of peripheral airway function, are understudied in schoolchildren.

RESEARCH QUESTION

Is the double-tracer gas single-breath washout (DTG-SBW) measurement feasible in a pediatric field study setting? What are the predictors of the DTG-SBW-derived ventilation inhomogeneity estimate in unselected schoolchildren?

STUDY DESIGN AND METHODS

In this prospective cross-sectional field study, a mobile lung function testing unit visited participating schools in Switzerland. We applied DTG-SBW, fraction of exhaled nitric oxide (Feno), and spirometry measurements. The DTG-SBW is based on tidal inhalation of helium and sulfur-hexafluoride, and the phase III slope (SIIIHe-SF6) is derived. We assessed feasibility, repeatability, and associations of SIIIHe-SF6 with the potential predictors of anthropometrics, presence of wheeze (ie, parental report of one or more episode of wheeze in the prior year), Feno, FEV1, and FEV1/FVC.

RESULTS

In 1,782 children, 5,223 DTG-SBW trials were obtained. The DTG-SBW was acceptable in 1,449 children (81.3%); the coefficient of variation was 39.8%. SIIIHe-SF6 was independently but weakly positively associated with age and BMI. In 276 children (21.2%), wheeze was reported. SIIIHe-SF6 was higher by 0.049 g.mol.L-1 in children with wheeze compared with those without and remained associated with wheeze after adjusting for age and BMI in a multivariable linear regression model. SIIIHe-SF6 was not associated with Feno, FEV1, and FEV1/FVC.

INTERPRETATION

The DTG-SBW is feasible in a pediatric field study setting. On the population level, age, body composition, and wheeze are independent predictors of peripheral airway function in unselected schoolchildren. The variation of the DTG-SBW possibly constrains its current applicability on the individual level.

Rotational Transitions in the N2 + Ion Induced by Collisions with Helium Atoms in Cold Helium Plasmas. A Quasiclassical Trajectory Study

Cross-sections of state-to-state rotational transitions in electronically ground-state 14N 2 + ${{\rm{N}}_2^ + }$ (X2Σ g + ${{\Sigma }_{g}^{+}}$ ) ions induced by collisions with 4 He atoms have been calculated using a quasiclassical trajectory method and a set of artificial neural networks representing theN 2 + ${{\rm{N}}_2^ + }$ /He potential energy surface. The training points for the neural networks have been calculated at a MCSCF (multi-configuration self-consistent field)/aug-cc-pVQZ level. A broad range of theN 2 + ${{\rm{N}}_2^ + }$ /He collision energy has been considered (E c o l l ≤ 100 ${{E}_{{\rm c}{\rm o}{\rm l}{\rm l}}\le 100}$  eV) and the efficiency of vibrational transitions in theN 2 + ${{\rm{N}}_2^ + }$ ion has also been analyzed. It has been found that vibrational transitions are negligible with respect to rotational transitions up toE c o l l ≈ 10 ${{E}_{{\rm c}{\rm o}{\rm l}{\rm l}}\approx 10}$  eV and that above this energy, both rotational and vibrational transitions inN 2 + ${{\rm{N}}_2^ + }$ are marginal in theN 2 + ${{\rm{N}}_2^ + }$ /He collisions.

Chemiluminescent Analysis of Oxidative Metabolism in Rat Blood under the Influence of Argon and Helium

We studied the nature of the action of course treatment with argon and helium (1 min, 3 procedures) on the oxidative metabolism in rat blood plasma. The study was performed on 30 Wistar rats divided into 3 groups (n=10 in each group): intact and 2 experimental (treatment of the skin of the back with a stream of argon and helium, respectively). After completion of the treatment course, the intensity of free radical processes, the total antioxidant activity, and malondialdehyde concentration were evaluated in the blood plasma. It was found that argon and helium gas flows provide stimulation of antioxidant systems, but the mechanisms of their effect were different. Treatment with helium did not affect the intensity of free radical processes, but significantly increased the overall antioxidant activity of blood plasma and reduced malondialdehyde concentration in comparison with the effect of argon flow.

Characterization of Silicate Glass/Mullite Composites Based on Coal Fly Ash Cenospheres as Effective Gas Separation Membranes

Membrane technology is a promising method for gas separation. Due to its low energy consumption, environmental safety, and ease of operation, membrane separation has a distinct advantage over the cryogenic distillation conventionally used to capture light inert gases. For efficient gas recovery and purification, membrane materials should be highly selective, highly permeable, thermally stable, and low-cost. Currently, many studies are focused on the development of high-tech materials with specific properties using industrial waste. One of the promising waste products that can be recycled into membrane materials with improved microstructure is cenospheres-hollow aluminosilicate spherical particles that are formed in fly ash from coal combustion during power generation. For this purpose, based on narrow fractions of fly ash cenospheres containing single-ring and network structure globules, silicate glass/mullite composites were prepared, characterized, and tested for helium-neon mixture separation. The results indicate that the fragmented structure of the cenosphere shells with areas enriched in SiO2 without modifier oxides, formed due to the crystallization of defective phases of mullite, quartz, cristobalite, and anorthite, significantly facilitates the gas transport process. The permeability coefficients He and Ne exceed similar values for silicate glasses; the selectivity corresponds to a high level even at a high temperature: αHe/Ne-22 and 174 at 280 °C.

Neuroprotection Is in the Air-Inhaled Gases on Their Way to the Neurons

Cerebral injury is a leading cause of long-term disability and mortality. Common causes include major cardiovascular events, such as cardiac arrest, ischemic stroke, and subarachnoid hemorrhage, traumatic brain injury, and neurodegenerative as well as neuroinflammatory disorders. Despite improvements in pharmacological and interventional treatment options, due to the brain's limited regeneration potential, survival is often associated with the impairment of crucial functions that lead to occupational inability and enormous economic burden. For decades, researchers have therefore been investigating adjuvant therapeutic options to alleviate neuronal cell death. Although promising in preclinical studies, a huge variety of drugs thought to provide neuroprotective effects failed in clinical trials. However, utilizing medical gases, noble gases, and gaseous molecules as supportive treatment options may offer new perspectives for patients suffering neuronal damage. This review provides an overview of current research, potentials and mechanisms of these substances as a promising therapeutic alternative for the treatment of cerebral injury.

Therapeutic management of severe spinal cord decompression sickness in a hyperbaric center

Introduction

Spinal cord decompression sickness (scDCS) unfortunately has a high rate of long-term sequelae. The purpose of this study was to determine the best therapeutic management in a hyperbaric center and, in particular, the influence of hyperbaric treatment performed according to tables at 4 atm (Comex 30) or 2.8 atm abs (USNT5 or T6 equivalent).

Methods

This was a retrospective study that included scDCS with objective sensory or motor deficit affecting the limbs and/or sphincter impairment seen at a single hyperbaric center from 2010 to 2020. Information on dive, time to recompression, and in-hospital management (hyperbaric and medical treatments such as lidocaine) were analyzed as predictor variables, as well as initial clinical severity and clinical deterioration in the first 24 h after initial recompression. The primary endpoint was the presence or absence of sequelae at discharge as assessed by the modified Japanese Orthopaedic Association score.

Results

102 divers (52 ± 16 years, 20 female) were included. In multivariate analysis, high initial clinical severity, deterioration in the first 24 h, and recompression tables at 4 atm versus 2.8 atm abs for both initial and additional recompression were associated with incomplete neurological recovery. Analysis of covariance comparing the effect of initial tables at 2.8 versus 4 atm abs as a function of initial clinical severity showed a significantly lower level of sequelae with tables at 2.8 atm. In studying correlations between exposure times to maximum or cumulative O2 dose and the degree of sequelae, the optimal initial treatment appears to be a balance between administration of a high partial pressure of O2 (2.8 atm) and a limited exposure duration that does not result in pulmonary oxygen toxicity. Further analysis suggests that additional tables in the first 24-48 h at 2.8 atm abs with a Heliox mixture may be beneficial, while the use of lidocaine does not appear to be relevant.

Conclusion

Our study shows that the risk of sequelae is related not only to initial severity but also to clinical deterioration in the first 24 h, suggesting the activation of biological cascades that can be mitigated by well-adapted initial and complementary hyperbaric treatment.

Features of Helium and Tritium Release from Li2TiO3 Ceramic Pebbles under Neutron Irradiation

The operation of fusion reactors is based on the reaction that occurs when two heavy hydrogen isotopes, deuterium and tritium, combine to form helium and a neutron with an energy of 14.1 MeV D + T → He + n. For this reaction to occur, it is necessary to produce tritium in the facility itself, as tritium is not common in nature. The generation of tritium in the facility is a key function of the breeder blanket. During the operation of a D-T fusion reactor, high-energy tritium is generated as a result of the 6Li(n,α)T reaction in a lithium-containing ceramic material in the breeder blanket. Lithium metatitanate Li2TiO3 is proposed as one of the promising materials for use in the solid breeder blanket of the DEMO reactor. Several concepts for test blanket modules based on lithium ceramics are being developed for testing at the ITER reactor. Lithium metatitanate Li2TiO3 has good tritium release parameters, as well as good thermal and thermomechanical characteristics. The most important property of lithium ceramics Li2TiO3 is its ability to withstand exposure to long-term high-energy radiation at high temperatures and across large temperature gradients. Its inherent thermal stability and chemical inertness are significant advantages in terms of safety concerns. This study was a continuation of research regarding tritium and helium release from lithium metatitanate Li2TiO3 with 96% 6Li during irradiation at the WWR-K research reactor using the vacuum extraction method. As a result of the analysis of experiments regarding the irradiation of lithium metatitanate in vacuum conditions, it has been established that, during irradiation, peak releases of helium from closed pores of the ceramics are observed, which open during the first 7 days of irradiation. The authors assumed that the reasons samples crack are temperature gradients over the ceramic sample, resulting from the internal heating of pebbles under the conditions of their vacuum evacuation, and contact with the bottom of the evacuated capsule. The temperature dependence of the effective diffusion coefficient of tritium in ceramics at the end of irradiation and the parameters of helium effusion were also determined.

Anomalous Diffusion of Helium and Neon in Low-Density Silica Glass

The diffusion properties of low-density non-porous silica glasses (expanded silica glasses) were researched with the aim of searching for the molecular structure of membrane materials intended for the effective separation of helium-neon gas mixtures. It has been shown on a large number (84) of computer models of such glasses that there are molecular structures of silica in which various helium and neon diffusion mechanisms are simultaneously implemented: superdiffusion for helium and subdiffusion for neon. This makes it possible to significantly (by 3-5 orders of magnitude) increase the helium permeability of such glasses at room temperature and maintain a high selectivity for the separation of helium and neon (at the level of 104-105) at the same time.

Thermal resistance network model for thermal conductivity of normal liquid helium-4 and helium-3

Liquid heliums are intriguing substances. Superfluid states below certain critical temperatures, notably liquid helium-4 and helium-3 exhibit ultra-high thermal conductivity in the superfluid phase. However, the microscopic origin of the thermal conductivity of liquid heliums in the normal phase remains unclear. In this work, we employ the thermal resistance network model to calculate the thermal conductivities of normal liquid helium-4 (He I) and helium-3. Predicted values are not only in good agreement with the measurements but also reproduce the experimental trend of thermal conductivity increasing with temperature and pressure.

The Influence of Coherent Oxide Interfaces on the Behaviors of Helium (He) Ion Irradiated ODS W

Tungsten (W), as a promising plasma-facing material for fusion nuclear reactors, exhibits ductility reduction. Introducing high-density coherent nano-dispersoids into the W matrix is a highly efficient strategy to break the tradeoff of the strength-ductility performance. In this work, we performed helium (He) ion irradiation on coherent oxide-dispersoids strengthened (ODS) W to investigate the effect of coherent nanoparticle interfaces on the behavior of He bubbles. The results show that the diameter and density of He bubbles in ODS W are close to that in W at low dose of He ion irradiation. The radiation-induced hardening increment of ODS W, being 25% lower than that of pure W, suggests the involvement of the coherent interface in weakening He ion irradiation-induced hardening and emphasizes the potential of coherent nano-dispersoids in enhancing the radiation resistance of W-based materials.

Features of Helium-Vacancy Complex Formation at the Zr/Nb Interface

A first-principles study of the atomic structure and electron density distribution at the Zr/Nb interface under the influence of helium impurities and helium-vacancy complexes was performed using the optimised Vanderbilt pseudopotential method. For the determination of the preferred positions of the helium atom, the vacancy and the helium-vacancy complex at the interface, the formation energy of the Zr-Nb-He system has been calculated. The preferred positions of the helium atoms are in the first two atomic layers of Zr at the interface, where helium-vacancy complexes form. This leads to a noticeable increase in the size of the reduced electron density areas induced by vacancies in the first Zr layers at the interface. The formation of the helium-vacancy complex reduces the size of the reduced electron density areas in the third Zr and Nb layers as well as in the Zr and Nb bulk. Vacancies in the first niobium layer near the interface attract the nearest zirconium atoms and partially replenish the electron density. This may indicate a possible self-healing of this type of defect.

Scanning Transmission Ion Microscopy Time-of-Flight Spectroscopy Using 20 keV Helium Ions

Scanning transmission ion microscopy imaging was performed whilst using a delay-line detector to record the impact position and arrival time of transmitted ions or neutrals. The incident helium ion beam had an energy of 20 keV and the arrival time measurements were used to calculate the energy loss after transmission through the sample. The 5D dataset thus produced (2D position in the sample plane, 2D position in the detector plane, and energy) is analyzed by collection into energy spectra or images. It is demonstrated that ion energy loss maps can identify regions of identical materials in the sample plane. The behavior of the energy loss with respect to the scattering angle is calculated and these simulations agree with the experimentally measured results. This experiment demonstrates the capability of keV helium ions to be successfully used in energy loss imaging experiments. This is the first step in the development of keV scanning transmission ion microscopy energy loss techniques.

Long-term core-mantle interaction explains W-He isotope heterogeneities

The isotopic characteristics of ocean island basalts have long been used to infer the nature of their source and the long-term evolution of the Earth's mantle. Anticorrelation between tungsten and helium isotopic signatures is a particularly puzzling feature in those basalts, which no single process appears to explain. Traditionally, the high ³He/⁴He signature has been attributed to an undegassed reservoir in the deep mantle. Additional processes needed to obtain low ¹⁸²W/¹⁸⁴W often entail unobserved ancillary geochemical effects. It has been suggested, however, that the core feeds the lower mantle with primordial helium, obviating the need for an undegassed mantle reservoir. Independently, the tungsten-rich core has been suggested to impart the plume source with anomalous tungsten isotope signatures. We advance the idea that isotopic diffusion may simultaneously transport both tungsten and helium across the core-mantle boundary, with the striking implication that diffusion can naturally account for the observed isotopic trend. By modeling the long-term isotopic evolution of mantle domains, we demonstrate that this mechanism can account for more than sufficient isotopic ratios in plume-source material, which, after dynamical transport to the Earth's surface, are consistent with the present-day mantle W-He isotopic heterogeneities. No undegassed mantle reservoir is required, bearing significance on early Earth conditions such as the extent of magma oceans.

Scientific shallow saturation dive expedition using diving rebreathers and a specific dry habitat: medical management of the "Capsule" programme

BACKGROUND

Scientific underwater exploration could benefit from professional diving facilities. This could allow marine research for durations far exceeding anything currently possible. The closed-circuit rebreather expansion provides new perspectives by unleashing divers and their diving bell. "Under the Pole Expeditions" developed an innovative compact underwater habitat for this purpose.

MATERIALS AND METHODS

The habitat's depth was fixed at 20 m. Saturation lasted 3 days and was followed by a 245 min long decompression procedure with mandatory in-water phase. Isolation and environmental constraints will require specific medical and safety procedures. "In situ" medical concerns were considered, and a specific evacuation plan was established. This report describes the medical management of this atypical project and the systematic clinical follow-up mostly targeted on the cardiovascular system, fatigue and psychological tolerance.

RESULTS

Seventeen individual saturation exposures were performed. All selected divers were professional. Neither severe illness nor decompression sickness was observed. These short-term saturation exposures appeared to be well tolerated. There was a relatively low bubble grade after decompression. Psychological tolerance appeared good. However, a transient moderate orthostatic hypotension suggested cardiovascular deconditioning after dive.

CONCLUSIONS

This first experiment demonstrates the interest and feasibility of a shallow revisited saturation dive with rebreather use. This isolation requires medical accompaniment and rigorous preparation. Medical and physiological risks assessment is essential in this context and must be consolidated by new experiences.

Small Corrections to 1989 NIST Constant-Volume Gas Thermometry Data

Constant-volume gas thermometry data published in 1989 for the difference between the thermodynamic temperature and the International Practical Temperature Scale of 1968 are corrected in two ways. A refined estimate of the thermal expansivity of the material of the gas bulb, published in 1990, increases the thermodynamic temperature by amounts on the order of 1 mK to 3 mK. Better knowledge of the nonideality of helium gas reduces the uncertainty of the nonideality correction to near zero and decreases the thermodynamic temperature by amounts on the order of 0.1 mK to 0.5 mK. The net effect is a small increase in the thermodynamic temperature derived from the 1989 experiments. The magnitude of this increase is approximately 2 mK at 505 K, increasing to 3 mK at temperatures near 700 K, and then diminishing to near 0.5 mK at the highest temperature of the measurements (933 K). These corrections are smaller than the uncertainty of the experiments, but may be of significance for future recommendations for the relationship between the thermodynamic temperature and the consensus scale in this temperature range.

Noble gas and neuroprotection: From bench to bedside

In recent years, inert gases such as helium, argon, and xenon have gained considerable attention for their medical value. Noble gases present an intriguing scientific paradox: although extremely chemically inert, they display a remarkable spectrum of clinically useful biological properties. Despite a relative paucity of knowledge about their mechanisms of action, some noble gases have been used successfully in clinical practice. The neuroprotection elicited by these noble gases has been investigated in experimental animal models of various types of brain injuries, such as traumatic brain injury, stroke, subarachnoid hemorrhage, cerebral ischemic/reperfusion injury, and neurodegenerative diseases. Collectively, these central nervous system injuries are a leading cause of morbidity and mortality every year worldwide. Treatment options are presently limited to thrombolytic drugs and clot removal for ischemic stroke, or therapeutic cooling for other brain injuries before the application of noble gas. Currently, there is increasing interest in noble gases as novel treatments for various brain injuries. In recent years, neuroprotection elicited by particular noble gases, xenon, for example, has been reported under different conditions. In this article, we have reviewed the latest in vitro and in vivo experimental and clinical studies of the actions of xenon, argon, and helium, and discuss their potential use as neuroprotective agents.

The Effect of Yttrium on the Solution and Diffusion Behaviors of Helium in Tungsten: First-Principles Simulations

We systematically investigated the influence of yttrium (Y) on the evolution behavior of helium (He) in tungsten (W) by first-principles calculations. It is found that the addition of Y reduces the solution energy of He atoms in W. Interestingly, the solution energy of He decreases with decreasing distance between Y and He. The binding energies between Y and He are inversely correlated with the effective charge of He atoms, which can be attributed to the closed shell structure of He. In addition, compared with pure W, the diffusion barrier (0.033 eV) of He with Y is lower, calculated by the climbing-image nudged elastic band (CI-NEB) simulations, reflecting that the existence of Y contributes to the diffusion of He in W. The obtained results provide a theoretical direction for understanding the diffusion of He.

Solvation of Large Polycyclic Aromatic Hydrocarbons in Helium: Cationic and Anionic Hexabenzocoronene

The adsorption of helium on charged hexabenzocoronene (Hbc, C₄₂H₁₈), a planar polycyclic aromatic hydrocarbon (PAH) molecule of D_6h symmetry, was investigated by a combination of high-resolution mass spectrometry and classical and quantum computational methods. The ion abundance of He_nHbc⁺ complexes versus size n features prominent local anomalies at n = 14, 38, 68, 82, and a weak one at 26, indicating that for these “magic” sizes, the helium evaporation energies are relatively large. Surprisingly, the mass spectra of anionic He_nHbc⁻ complexes feature a different set of anomalies, namely at n = 14, 26, 60, and 62, suggesting that the preferred arrangement of the adsorbate atoms depends on the charge of the substrate. The results of our quantum calculations show that the adsorbate layer grows by successive filling of concentric rings that surround the central benzene ring, which is occupied by one helium atom each on either side of the substrate. The helium atoms are fairly localized in filled rings and they approximately preserve the D_6h symmetry of the substrate, but helium atoms in partially filled rings are rather delocalized. The first three rings contain six atoms each; they account for magic numbers at n = 14, 26, and 38. The size of the first ring shrinks as atoms are filled into the second ring, and the position of atoms in the second ring changes from hollow sites to bridge sites as atoms are filled into the third ring. Beyond n = 38, however, the arrangement of helium atoms in the first three rings remains essentially frozen. Presumably, another ring is filled at n = 68 for cations and n = 62 for anions. The calculated structures and energies do not account for the difference between charge states, although they agree with the measurements for the cations and show that the first solvation shell of Hbc^± is complete at n = 68. Beyond that size, the adsorbate layer becomes three-dimensional, and the circular arrangement of helium changes to hexagonal.

Thermal Conductivity of Helium and Argon at High Pressure and High Temperature

Helium (He) and argon (Ar) are important rare gases and pressure media used in diamond-anvil cell (DAC) experiments. Their thermal conductivity at high pressure-temperature (P-T) conditions is a crucial parameter for modeling heat conduction and temperature distribution within a DAC. Here we report the thermal conductivity of He and Ar over a wide range of high P-T conditions using ultrafast time-domain thermoreflectance coupled with an externally heated DAC. We find that at room temperature the thermal conductivity of liquid and solid He shows a pressure dependence of P^0.86 and P^0.72, respectively; upon heating the liquid, He at 10.2 GPa follows a T^0.45 dependence. By contrast, the thermal conductivity of solid Ar at room temperature has a pressure dependence of P^1.25, while a T^-1.37 dependence is observed for solid Ar at 19 GPa. Our results not only provide crucial bases for further investigation into the physical mechanisms of heat transport in He and Ar under extremes, but also substantially improve the accuracy of modeling the temperature profile within a DAC loaded with He or Ar. The P-T dependences of the thermal conductivity of He are important to better model and constrain the structural and thermal evolution of gas giant planets containing He.

Argon-Helium Cryoablation for Cutaneous Squamous Cell Carcinoma in the Elderly

Cutaneous squamous cell carcinoma (cSCC) is a common type of malignant neoplasm in non-melanoma skin cancer (NMSC). Most cases of simple cSCC are considered curable by surgical removal of the lesion. However, clinical treatments for cSCC with medium- or large-sized lesions are difficult. Meanwhile, the effectiveness of the treatments is not guaranteed, especially for elderly patients, because of an intolerance to surgical resection or other adjuvant modalities. In such cases, safe and effective treatments with excellent aesthetic outcomes are urgently needed. In this study, we reported 6 elderly cSCC patients with medium- or large-sized lesions treated with argon-helium cryoablation. The average age of all 6 patients was 78 years (range 72-85 years). They were all diagnosed with cSCC with a median tumor size of 5.8 cm (range 2.5-15.5 cm) and dermal invasion. Complete ablation was achieved in all cases after a single ablation session (2 freeze-thaw cycles). Patients experienced mild pain and hemorrhage after ablation, but the symptoms were manageable. One patient developed infection and fever because of extensive necrosis of the tumor, which was eventually cured after treatment. All patients obtained good cosmetic outcomes, and their quality of life improved significantly. In the 5-year follow-up study, 4 patients were alive while 2 patients died of unrelated diseases 3 years after cryotherapy. None of the 6 patients had a recurrence. These results suggested the feasibility of argon-helium cryoablation as a novel therapeutic strategy for elderly cSCC with medium- or large-sized lesions.

Neonatal Applications of Heliox: A Practical Review

Heliox is a mixture of helium and oxygen that may be utilized as an alternative to air-oxygen during the ventilatory support in the neonate. Special physical properties of Heliox, particularly low density, allow for improved gas flow and diffusion. First reports of Heliox use in the pediatric population were published in 1930s; however, this therapy has never gained widespread popularity despite its described beneficial effects. Historically, this was largely due to technical challenges associated with Heliox ventilation that significantly limited its use and realization of large-scale clinical trials. However, nowadays several commercially available ventilators allow easy and safe ventilation with both conventional and non-invasive modes. In the era of minimally invasive respiratory interventions in the newborn Heliox could be seen as a therapy that may potentially decrease the risk of non-invasive ventilation failure. This review presents pathophysiologic rationale for the use of Heliox in the newborn, and summarizes available data regarding applications of Heliox in the setting of neonatal intensive care unit based on clinical studies and findings from animal models. Mechanisms of action and practical aspects of Heliox delivery are thoroughly discussed. Finally, future research directions for neonatal use of Heliox are proposed.

High 3He/4He in central Panama reveals a distal connection to the Galápagos plume

We report the discovery of anomalously high ³He/⁴He in “cold” geothermal fluids of central Panama, far from any active volcanoes. Combined with independent constraints from lava geochemistry, mantle source geochemical anomalies in Central America require a Galápagos plume contribution that is not derived from hotspot track recycling. Instead, these signals likely originate from large-scale transport of Galápagos plume material at sublithospheric depths. Mantle flow modeling and geophysical observations further indicate these geochemical anomalies could result from a Galápagos plume-influenced asthenospheric “mantle wind” that is actively “blowing” through a slab window beneath central Panama. The lateral transport of plume material represents a potentially widespread yet underappreciated mechanism that scatters enriched geochemical signatures in mantle domains far from plumes.

It is well established that mantle plumes are the main conduits for upwelling geochemically enriched material from Earth's deep interior. The fashion and extent to which lateral flow processes at shallow depths may disperse enriched mantle material far (>1,000 km) from vertical plume conduits, however, remain poorly constrained. Here, we report He and C isotope data from 65 hydrothermal fluids from the southern Central America Margin (CAM) which reveal strikingly high ³He/⁴He (up to 8.9R_A) in low-temperature (≤50 °C) geothermal springs of central Panama that are not associated with active volcanism. Following radiogenic correction, these data imply a mantle source ³He/⁴He >10.3R_A (and potentially up to 26R_A, similar to Galápagos hotspot lavas) markedly greater than the upper mantle range (8 ± 1R_A). Lava geochemistry (Pb isotopes, Nb/U, and Ce/Pb) and geophysical constraints show that high ³He/⁴He values in central Panama are likely derived from the infiltration of a Galápagos plume–like mantle through a slab window that opened ∼8 Mya. Two potential transport mechanisms can explain the connection between the Galápagos plume and the slab window: 1) sublithospheric transport of Galápagos plume material channeled by lithosphere thinning along the Panama Fracture Zone or 2) active upwelling of Galápagos plume material blown by a “mantle wind” toward the CAM. We present a model of global mantle flow that supports the second mechanism, whereby most of the eastward transport of Galápagos plume material occurs in the shallow asthenosphere. These findings underscore the potential for lateral mantle flow to transport mantle geochemical heterogeneities thousands of kilometers away from plume conduits.

Hyperpolarized 3 helium MRI measured apparent diffusion coefficient and its correlations with pulmonary functions tests in patients with chronic obstructive pulmonary disease: A meta-analysis

BACKGROUND

This study evaluates role of hyperpolarized ³ helium (³ He) MRI measured apparent diffusion coefficient (ADC) in examining pulmonary function of chronic obstructive pulmonary disease (COPD) patients.

METHODS

After literature search in electronic databases, studies were selected by following precise eligibility criteria. Meta-analyses were performed to estimate mean difference in ADC between COPD patients and healthy individuals and to seek correlations between lung ADC and pulmonary function. Metaregression analyses were performed to seek relationships between ADC and age, gender, BMI, cigarette pack-years, and pulmonary function tests.

RESULTS

Twenty-five studies (622 COPD patients and 469 healthy controls) were included. Lung ADC was 0.402 (95% confidence interval [CI]: 0.374, 0.429) in COPD patients and 0.228 (95% CI: 0.205, 0.252) in healthy individuals (mean difference 0.160 [95% CI: 0.127, 0.193]; p < 0.001). In metaregression, age (coefficient: 0.006; p = 0.004), pack-years (coefficient: 0.005; p = 0.018), forced expiratory volume in 1 s (FEV1)/forced vital capacity (FVC) ratio (coefficient: -1.815; p = 0.007), percent predicted diffusion capacity of carbon monoxide (DLCO) (coefficient: -0.004; p = 0.008), and percent predicted inspiratory capacity (coefficient: -0.004; p = 0.012) were significantly associated with ADC in COPD patients. In meta-analysis of correlation coefficients, ADC was significantly correlated with FEV1 (r = -0.62; p < 0.00001), FEV1/FVC (r = -0.80; p < 0.00001), DLCO (r = -0.85; p < 0.00001), functional residual capacity (r = 0.71; p < 0.00001), reserve volume (r = 0.53; p = 0.0001), and emphysema index (r = 0.89; p < 0.00001).

CONCLUSION

Hyperpolarized ³ He MRI measured ADC was higher in COPD patients than in healthy individuals and was inversely associated with FEV1, FEV1/FVC, DLCO, and inspiratory capacity.

SUPERFACT: A Model Fuel for Studying the Evolution of the Microstructure of Spent Nuclear Fuel during Storage/Disposal

The transmutation of minor actinides (in particular, Np and Am), which are among the main contributors to spent fuel α-radiotoxicity, was studied in the SUPERFACT irradiation. Several types of transmutation UO₂-based fuels were produced, differing by their minor actinide content (²⁴¹Am, ²³⁷Np, Pu), and irradiated in the Phénix fast reactor. Due to the high content in rather short-lived alpha-decaying actinides, both the archive, but also the irradiated fuels, cumulated an alpha dose during a laboratory time scale, which is comparable to that of standard LWR fuels during centuries/millenaries of storage. Transmission Electron Microscopy was performed to assess the evolution of the microstructure of the SUPERFACT archive and irradiated fuel. This was compared to conventional irradiated spent fuel (i.e., after years of storage) and to other ²³⁸Pu-doped UO₂ for which the equivalent storage time would span over centuries. It could be shown that the microstructure of these fluorites does not degrade significantly from low to very high alpha-damage doses, and that helium bubbles precipitate.

Neuroprotective effect of helium after neonatal hypoxic ischemia: a narrative review

Neonatal hypoxic ischemia is one of the leading causes of permanent morbidity and mortality in newborns, which is caused by difficulty in supplying blood and oxygen to brain tissue and is often associated with epilepsy, cerebral palsy, death, short-term or long-term neurological and cognitive impairment. In recent years, the clinical therapeutic effects of noble gases have been gradually discovered and recognized. Numerous studies have shown that noble gases have unique neuroprotective effects to restore damaged nerve and relieve symptoms in patients. Although research on the neuroprotective mechanisms of xenon and argon has yielded a lot of results, studies on helium have stalled. Helium is a colorless, odorless, monoatomic inert gas. The helium has no hemodynamic or neurocognitive side effects and can be used as an ideal pre-adaptor for future clinical applications. In recent years, studies have shown that heliox (a mixture of helium and oxygen) pretreatment can protect the heart, brain, liver and intestine from damage in several animal models, where a variety of signaling pathways have been proved to be involved. There are numerous studies on it even though the mechanism of helium for protecting newborns has not been fully elucidated. It is urgent to find an effective treatment due to the high death rate and disability rate of neonatal hypoxic ischemia. It is believed that helium will be approved safely and effectively for clinical use in the near future.

Helium's placement in the Periodic Table from a crystal structure viewpoint

The present paper indicates that helium has more in common with the alkaline earths than is often considered. Not only does it share an analogous electron configuration but it also has an analogous crystal structure to that of beryllium and magnesium which is, in contrast, characteristic of the bulk material rather than of isolated atoms.

Noble-Gas Chemistry More than Half a Century after the First Report of the Noble-Gas Compound

Recent development in the synthesis and characterization of noble-gas compounds is reviewed, i.e., noble-gas chemistry reported in the last five years with emphasis on the publications issued after 2017. XeF2 is commercially available and has a wider practical application both in the laboratory use and in the industry. As a ligand it can coordinate to metal centers resulting in [M(XeF2)x]n+ salts. With strong Lewis acids, XeF2 acts as a fluoride ion donor forming [XeF]+ or [Xe2F3]+ salts. Latest examples are [Xe2F3][RuF6]·XeF2, [Xe2F3][RuF6] and [Xe2F3][IrF6]. Adducts NgF2·CrOF4 and NgF2·2CrOF4 (Ng = Xe, Kr) were synthesized and structurally characterized at low temperatures. The geometry of XeF6 was studied in solid argon and neon matrices. Xenon hexafluoride is a well-known fluoride ion donor forming various [XeF5]+ and [Xe2F11]+ salts. A large number of crystal structures of previously known or new [XeF5]+ and [Xe2F11]+ salts were reported, i.e., [Xe2F11][SbF6], [XeF5][SbF6], [XeF5][Sb2F11], [XeF5][BF4], [XeF5][TiF5], [XeF5]5[Ti10F45], [XeF5][Ti3F13], [XeF5]2[MnF6], [XeF5][MnF5], [XeF5]4[Mn8F36], [Xe2F11]2[SnF6], [Xe2F11]2[PbF6], [XeF5]4[Sn5F24], [XeF5][Xe2F11][CrVOF5]·2CrVIOF4, [XeF5]2[CrIVF6]·2CrVIOF4, [Xe2F11]2[CrIVF6], [XeF5]2[CrV2O2F8], [XeF5]2[CrV2O2F8]·2HF, [XeF5]2[CrV2O2F8]·2XeOF4, A[XeF5][SbF6]2 (A = Rb, Cs), Cs[XeF5][BixSb1-xF6]2 (x = ~0.37-0.39), NO2XeF5(SbF6)2, XeF5M(SbF6)3 (M = Ni, Mg, Zn, Co, Cu, Mn and Pd) and (XeF5)3[Hg(HF)]2(SbF6)7. Despite its extreme sensitivity, many new XeO3 adducts were synthesized, i.e., the 15-crown adduct of XeO3, adducts of XeO3 with triphenylphosphine oxide, dimethylsulfoxide and pyridine-N-oxide, and adducts between XeO3 and N-bases (pyridine and 4-dimethylaminopyridine). [Hg(KrF2)8][AsF6]2·2HF is a new example of a compound in which KrF2 serves as a ligand. Numerous new charged species of noble gases were reported (ArCH2+, ArOH+, [ArB3O4]+, [ArB3O5]+, [ArB4O6]+, [ArB5O7]+, [B12(CN)11Ne]-). Molecular ion HeH+ was finally detected in interstellar space. The discoveries of Na2He and ArNi at high pressure were reported. Bonding motifs in noble-gas compounds are briefly commented on in the last paragraph of this review.

Special Issue: Radiation Damage in Materials-Helium Effects

Despite its scarcity in terrestrial life, helium effects on microstructure evolution and thermo-mechanical properties can have a significant impact on the operation and lifetime of applications, including: advanced structural steels in fast fission reactors, plasma facing and structural materials in fusion devices, spallation neutron target designs, energetic alpha emissions in actinides, helium precipitation in tritium-containing materials, and nuclear waste materials. The small size of a helium atom combined with its near insolubility in almost every solid makes the helium–solid interaction extremely complex over multiple length and time scales. This Special Issue, “Radiation Damage in Materials—Helium Effects”, contains review articles and full-length papers on new irradiation material research activities and novel material ideas using experimental and/or modeling approaches. These studies elucidate the interactions of helium with various extreme environments and tailored nanostructures, as well as their impact on microstructural evolution and material properties.

Ultrasound Responsive Noble Gas Microbubbles for Applications in Image-Guided Gas Delivery

Noble gases, especially xenon (Xe), have been shown to have antiapoptotic effects in treating hypoxia ischemia related injuries. Currently, in vivo gas delivery is systemic and performed through inhalation, leading to reduced efficacy at the injury site. This report provides a first demonstration of the encapsulation of pure Xe, Ar, or He in phospholipid-coated sub-10 µm microbubbles, without the necessity of stabilizing perfluorocarbon additives. Optimization of shell compositions and preparation techniques show that distearoylphosphatidylcholine (DSPC) with DSPE-PEG5000 can produce stable microbubbles upon shaking, while dibehenoylphosphatidylcholine (DBPC) blended with either DSPE-PEG2000 or DSPE-PEG5000 produces a high yield of microbubbles via a sonication/centrifugation method. Xe and Ar concentrations released into the microbubble suspension headspace are measured using GC-MS, while Xe released directly in solution is detected by the fluorescence quenching of a Xe-sensitive cryptophane molecule. Bubble production is found to be amenable to scale-up while maintaining their size distribution and stability. Excellent ultrasound contrast is observed in a phantom for several minutes under physiological conditions, while an intravenous administration of a bolus of pure Xe microbubbles provides significant contrast in a mouse in pre- and post-lung settings (heart and kidney, respectively), paving the way for image-guided, localized gas delivery for theranostic applications.

A comparative study of single-particle cryo-EM with liquid-nitrogen and liquid-helium cooling

Radiation damage is the most fundamental limitation for achieving high resolution in electron cryo-microscopy (cryo-EM) of biological samples. The effects of radiation damage are reduced by liquid-helium cooling, although the use of liquid helium is more challenging than that of liquid nitrogen. To date, the benefits of liquid-nitrogen and liquid-helium cooling for single-particle cryo-EM have not been compared quantitatively. With recent technical and computational advances in cryo-EM image recording and processing, such a comparison now seems timely. This study aims to evaluate the relative merits of liquid-helium cooling in present-day single-particle analysis, taking advantage of direct electron detectors. Two data sets for recombinant mouse heavy-chain apoferritin cooled with liquid-nitrogen or liquid-helium to 85 or 17 K were collected, processed and compared. No improvement in terms of resolution or Coulomb potential map quality was found for liquid-helium cooling. Interestingly, beam-induced motion was found to be significantly higher with liquid-helium cooling, especially within the most valuable first few frames of an exposure, thus counteracting any potential benefit of better cryoprotection that liquid-helium cooling may offer for single-particle cryo-EM.

How common are suicides using nitrous oxide?

Analysis of autopsy cases of suicide from Forensic Science South Australia files (2003–2017) where helium, nitrogen or nitrous oxide gas had been used revealed that only 2/58 (3.5%) cases utilised nitrous oxide; the remainder of cases had used helium or nitrogen. The two cases are presented here. In case 1, a 48-year-old man was found completely encased in a plastic bag with a hose connected to an opened cylinder of nitrous oxide. In case 2, a 27-year-old woman was found with a plastic bag over her head, tied around her neck, with a tube connected to a small canister of nitrous oxide. There were approximately 20 empty canisters of nitrous oxide nearby. Death in both cases was due to nitrous oxide augmentation of plastic bag asphyxia, manner suicide. The relative ease with which helium and nitrogen cylinders containing large amounts of gas can be obtained may explain the low numbers of suicides utilising nitrous oxide.

Helium-Induced Changes in Circulating Caveolin in Mice Suggest a Novel Mechanism of Cardiac Protection

The noble gas helium (He) induces cardioprotection in vivo through unknown molecular mechanisms. He can interact with and modify cellular membranes. Caveolae are cholesterol and sphingolipid-enriched invaginations of the plasma-membrane-containing caveolin (Cav) proteins that are critical in protection of the heart. Mice (C57BL/6J) inhaled either He gas or adjusted room air. Functional measurements were performed in the isolated Langendorff perfused heart at 24 h post He inhalation. Electron paramagnetic resonance spectrometry (EPR) of samples was carried out at 24 h post He inhalation. Immunoblotting was used to detect Cav-1/3 expression in whole-heart tissue, exosomes isolated from platelet free plasma (PFP) and membrane fractions. Additionally, transmission electron microscopy analysis of cardiac tissue and serum function and metabolomic analysis were performed. In contrast to cardioprotection observed in in vivo models, the isolated Langendorff perfused heart revealed no protection after He inhalation. However, levels of Cav-1/3 were reduced 24 h after He inhalation in whole-heart tissue, and Cav-3 was increased in exosomes from PFP. Addition of serum to muscle cells in culture or naïve ventricular tissue increased mitochondrial metabolism without increasing reactive oxygen species generation. Primary and lipid metabolites determined potential changes in ceramide by He exposure. In addition to direct effects on myocardium, He likely induces the release of secreted membrane factors enriched in caveolae. Our results suggest a critical role for such circulating factors in He-induced organ protection.

Heat Source Characteristics of Ternary-Gas-Shielded Tandem Narrow-Gap GMAW

The characteristics of the welding heat source for tandem narrow-gap gas metal arc welding are examined for different ternary shielding gas (Ar-CO₂-He) compositions. Results of previous calculations of arc properties for bead-on-plate geometry are adapted to the narrow-gap geometry to predict these characteristics. The heat source concentration factor decreases and the maximum heat flux density increases as the helium content increases, which leads to an increased welding heat efficiency. Addition of CO₂ up to around 10% also increases the heat efficiency. When the CO₂ content exceeds 10%, the heat source concentration factor increases significantly and the heat efficiency decreases. The shielding gas composition also affects the heat source distribution. The heat source characteristics are applied to a computational fluid dynamic model of the weld pool to predict the weld shape, and the predictions are verified by experiment. The results indicate that the appropriate addition of helium to the shielding gas can increase the heat transferred to the peripheral regions of the arc and increase the sidewall penetration.

Isotope Effects in the Predissociation of Excited States of N2 + Produced by Photoionization of 14N2 and 15N2 at Energies Between 24.2 and 25.6 eV

Photoelectron/photoion imaging spectrometry employing dispersed VUV radiation from the SOLEIL synchrotron has been used to study the predissociation of N2 + states located up to 1.3 eV above the ion's first dissociation limit. Branching ratios for unimolecular decay into either N2 + or N+ were obtained by measuring coincidences between threshold electrons and mass-selected product ions, using a supersonic beam of either 14N2 or 15N2 as photoionization target. The results confirm that predissociation of the C 2 Σ u + state of 14N2 + is faster than emission to the electronic ground-state by a factor 10 or more for all vibrational levels v' ≥ 3, while for 15N2 + the two decay modes have comparable probabilities for the levels v' = 3, 4, and 5. In contrast, no significant isotope effect could be observed for the other states of N2 + identified in the photoelectron spectrum. For both 14N2 + and 15N2 + isotopologues all vibrational levels of these other states decay to an extent of at least 95% by predissociation.

A case of hypoxic encephalopathy induced by the inhalation of helium that resolved with no neurological complications: a case report and analysis of similar cases

Background

Nowadays, it is getting easier to search information about helium‐assisted suicide online. Therefore, healthcare professionals must understand helium‐associated medical conditions.

Case Presentation

A 27‐year‐old man was found with his head covered with a bag connected to a helium tank. Hyperbaric oxygen therapy was not given because his head computed tomography showed no cerebral vasculature air embolism and there was no obvious limb paralysis. The diagnosis was impaired consciousness with hypoxic encephalopathy; he needed mechanical ventilation for 2 days. He was discharged after intelligence tests with no obvious higher brain dysfunction.

Conclusion

We successfully treated a patient with hypoxic encephalopathy due to helium inhalation. Our analysis suggests that the pathophysiology and appropriate intervention of helium intoxication might be different according to the devices used.

Molecular Calculation of the Critical Parameters of Classical Helium

We compute the vapor-liquid critical coordinates of a model of helium in which nuclear quantum effects are absent. We employ highly accurate ab initio pair and three-body potentials and calculate the critical parameters rigorously in two ways. First, we calculate the virial coefficients up to the seventh and find the point where an isotherm satisfies the critical conditions. Second, we use Gibbs Ensemble Monte Carlo (GEMC) to calculate the vapor-liquid equilibrium, and extrapolate the phase envelope to the critical point. Both methods yield results that are consistent within their uncertainties. The critical temperature of "classical helium" is 13.0 K (compared to 5.2 K for real helium), the critical pressure is 0.93 MPa, and the critical density is 28.4 mol·L-1, with expanded uncertainties (corresponding to a 95% confidence interval) on the order of 0.1 K, 0.02 MPa, and 0.5 mol·L-1, respectively. The effect of three-body interactions on the location of the critical point is small (lowering the critical temperature by roughly 0.1 K), suggesting that we are justified in ignoring four-body and higher interactions in our calculations. This work is motivated by the use of corresponding-states models for mixtures containing helium (such as some natural gases) at higher temperatures where quantum effects are expected to be negligible; in these situations, the distortion of the critical properties by quantum effects causes problems for the corresponding-states treatment.

Nitrogen inhalation suicide pacts

Suicide pacts usually result in simultaneous deaths by mutual arrangement. While nitrogen and helium gas inhalation are being increasingly used in solitary suicide attempts, for some reason they have been rarely utilised in suicide pacts. A search of autopsy files at Forensic Science SA over a 15-year period (2003-2017) was undertaken to determine how often this method of joint suicide occurs. Only two cases were found. Case 1 comprised a 64-year-old husband and wife (who had a history of multiple sclerosis). They were found deceased in a vehicle with two empty cylinders of nitrogen gas. Case 2 comprised an 87-year-old man (who had a history of ischaemic heart disease) and his 81-year-old wife who were found deceased with plastic bags over their heads, with plastic tubes connecting the bags to opened cylinders of nitrogen. The deaths in all cases were due to nitrogen-induced asphyxiation, in the latter instance augmenting plastic-bag asphyxia. Although suicide pacts have previously usually involved carbon-monoxide toxicity or drug overdose, it is possible that dissemination of information on the use of inert gases in individual suicide attempts may alter the methods used in future.

Investigation of Helium Behavior in RAFM Steel by Positron Annihilation Doppler Broadening and Thermal Desorption Spectroscopy

The behavior of helium in reduced-activation ferritic/martensitic steels was investigated systematically with positron annihilation Doppler broadening measurement and thermal desorption spectroscopy. Specimens were irradiated with helium ions with different energies to various fluences at different temperatures. A threshold fluence was observed above which the rate of formation and growth of helium bubbles dramatically increased. Irradiation at higher temperature could suppress the formation and growth of He_nV_m clusters with low binding energies and enhance that of helium bubbles and He_nV_m clusters with high binding energies. Different changes of S parameters were observed in various depth after the irradiation temperature was increased from 523 K to 723 K. Irradiation of 18 keV-He⁺ enhanced the growth of He_nV_m clusters and helium bubbles compared with 100 keV-He⁺ irradiation. A possible mechanism is discussed.

Study of the Influence of Shielding Gases on Laser Metal Deposition of Inconel 718 Superalloy

The use of the Laser Metal Deposition (LMD) technology as a manufacturing and repairing technique in industrial sectors like the die and mold and aerospace is increasing within the last decades. Research carried out in the field of LMD process situates argon as the most usual inert gas, followed by nitrogen. Some leading companies have started to use helium and argon as carrier and shielding gas, respectively. There is therefore a pressing need to know how the use of different gases may affect the LMD process due there being a lack of knowledge with regard to gas mixtures. The aim of the present work is to evaluate the influence of a mixture of argon and helium on the LMD process by analyzing single tracks of deposited material. For this purpose, special attention is paid to the melt pool temperature, as well as to the characterization of the deposited clads. The increment of helium concentration in the gases of the LMD processes based on argon will have three effects. The first one is a slight reduction of the height of the clads. Second, an increase of the temperature of the melt pool. Last, smaller wet angles are obtained for higher helium concentrations.

Modelling Charge Transfer in Weak Chemical Bonds: Insights from the Chemistry of Helium

We studied the nature of the interaction of the weakly bound Be-He adduct by means of an integrated theoretical approach based on high-level quantum chemical calculations for the characterization of the potential energy surfaces and charge displaced upon adduct formation, together with the development of a semi-empirical analytical formulation of the interaction potential. Our results show that Be is able to form a stable adduct with He when the Be(¹ D) (1s² 2s² →1s² 2s⁰ 2p² ) excited state is involved, with a binding energy of as much as 10.2 kcal/mol, an astonishingly large value for He in neutral systems. The analysis of the leading interaction components in the Be*-He adduct proves the relevance of the charge transfer to the overall stability, which contributes to decreasing the intermolecular distance, thus strengthening the induction-energy component.

How and Why Does Helium Permeate Nonporous Arsenolite Under High Pressure?

Investigations into the helium permeation of arsenolite, the cubic, molecular arsenic(III) oxide polymorph As₄ O₆ , were carried out to understand how and why arsenolite helium clathrate As₄ O₆ ⋅2 He is formed. High-pressure synchrotron X-ray diffraction experiments on arsenolite single crystals revealed that the permeation of helium into nonporous arsenolite depends on the time for which the crystal is subjected to high pressure and on the crystal history. The single crystal was totally transformed into As₄ O₆ ⋅2 He within 45 h under 5 GPa. After release of the pressure, arsenolite was recovered and a repeated increase in pressure up to 3 GPa led to practically instant As₄ O₆ ⋅2 He formation. However, when a pristine arsenolite single crystal was quickly subjected to a pressure of 13 GPa, no helium permeation was observed at all. No neon permeation was observed in analogous experiments. Quantum mechanical computations indicate that there are no specific attractive interactions between He atoms and As₄ O₆ molecules at the distances observed in the As₄ O₆ ⋅2 He crystal structure. Detailed analysis of As₄ O₆ molecular structure changes has shown that the introduction of He into the arsenolite crystal lattice significantly reduces molecular deformations by decreasing the anisotropy of stress exerted on the As₄ O₆ molecules. This effect and the pΔV term, rather than any specific As⋅⋅⋅He binding, are the driving forces for the formation As₄ O₆ ⋅2 He.

Standard values for gas-perfusion manometry of the esophagus

The manometry with water-perfused or solid-state catheters is the predominant diagnostic procedure to detect motility disorders of the esophagus. Another method is the manometry using gas-perfused catheters. Although the high-resolution manometry is the method of first choice, the conventional manometry with helium has some advantages: the simple and hygienically unproblematic use and the absence of any artefacts by the perfusion medium compared with water-perfusion, and the considerably lower costs compared with the solid-state catheters. Every method has own normal values because of the specific pressure transmission and the design of the catheter probes. To our knowledge, normal values for gas-perfusion manometry of the esophagus have not yet been published.The esophageal manometry with helium-perfused catheters was performed in 30 healthy volunteers. The main parameters of the esophageal motility and the lower esophageal sphincter were analyzed by liquid and bolus-like swallows and compared with the previous published values in other manometric procedures.The values of the motility in the distal esophagus are consistent; the pressure of the lower esophageal sphincter is generally lower than with other methods. The distal wave amplitude and the propagation velocity are significant higher in the distal esophagus than in the middle. The perfusion medium is well tolerated by the investigated volunteers.

Xenon-helium gas mixture at equimolar concentration of 37.5% protects against oxygen and glucose deprivation-induced injury and inhibits tissue plasminogen activator

Xenon (Xe) is considered to be the golden standard neuroprotective gas. However, Xe has a higher molecular weight and lower thermal conductivity and specific heat than those of nitrogen, the main diluent of oxygen in air. These physical characteristics could impair or at least reduce the intrinsic neuroprotective action of Xe by increasing the patient's respiratory workload and body temperature. In contrast, helium (He) is a cost-efficient gas with a lower molecular weight and higher thermal conductivity and specific heat than those of nitrogen, but is far less potent than Xe. In this study, we hypothesized that mixing Xe and He could allow obtaining a neuroprotective gas mixture with advantageously reduced molecular weight and increased thermal conductivity. We found that Xe and He at the equimolar concentration of 37.5% reduced oxygen-glucose deprivation-induced increase in lactate dehydrogenase in brain slices, an ex vivo model of acute ischemic stroke. These results together with the effects of Xe-He on the thrombolytic efficiency of tissue plasminogen activator are discussed.

A method for calculating the gas volume proportions and inhalation temperature of inert gas mixtures allowing reaching normothermic or hypothermic target body temperature in the awake rat

The noble gases xenon (Xe) and helium (He) are known to possess neuroprotective properties. Xe is considered the golden standard neuroprotective gas. However, Xe has a higher molecular weight and lower thermal conductivity and specific heat than those of nitrogen, the main diluent of oxygen (O2) in air, conditions that could impair or at least reduce the intrinsic neuroprotective properties of Xe by increasing the critical care patient's respiratory workload and body temperature. In contrast, He has a lower molecular weight and higher thermal conductivity and specific heat than those of nitrogen, but is unfortunately far less potent than Xe at providing neuroprotection. Therefore, combining Xe with He could allow obtaining, depending on the gas inhalation temperature and composition, gas mixtures with neutral or hypothermic properties, the latter being advantageous in term of neuroprotection. However, calculating the thermal properties of a mixture, whatever the substances - gases, metals, rubbers, etc. - is not trivial. To answer this question, we provide a graphical method to assess the volume proportions of Xe, He and O2 that a gas mixture should contain, and the inhalation temperature to which it should be administered to allow a clinician to maintain the patient at a target body temperature.
