New Surface Modification of Hydrophilic Polyvinyl Alcohol via Predrying and Electrospinning of Hydrophobic Polycaprolactone Nanofibers

Despite the excellent oxygen barrier and biodegradability of polyvinyl alcohol (PVA), its poor physical properties owing to its inherent hydrophilicity limit its application. In this paper, we report a novel surface modification technique for PVA films, involving the control of the predrying conditions (i.e., amount of residual solvent) of the coated PVA film and adjusting the electrospinning process of hydrophobic polycaprolactone (PCL) nanofibers onto the PVA films. The residual solvent of the coated PVA film was varied by changing the predrying time. A shorter predrying time increased the residual solvent content significantly (p < 0.05) and the flexibility of the coated PVA film. Moreover, scanning electron microscopy depicted the improved physical binding of hydrophobic PCL nanofibers to the hydrophilic PVA surface with increased penetration depth to the PVA film with shorter drying times. The PVA/PCL composite films with different predrying times and electrospun PCL nanofibers exhibited an apparent increase in the contact angle from 8.3° to 95.1°. The tensile strength of the pure PVA film increased significantly (p < 0.05) from 7.5 MPa to 77.4 MPa and its oxygen permeability decreased from 5.5 to 1.9 cc/m2·day. Therefore, our newly developed technique is cost-effective for modifying the surface and physical properties of hydrophilic polymers, broadening their industrial applications.

Kinetics Study of PVA Polymer by Model-Free and Model-Fitting Methods Using TGA

Thermogravimetric Analysis (TGA) serves a pivotal technique for evaluating the thermal behavior of Polyvinyl alcohol (PVA), a polymer extensively utilized in the production of fibers, films, and membranes. This paper targets the kinetics of PVA thermal degradation using high three heating rate range 20, 30, and 40 K min-1. The kinetic study was performed using six model-free methods: Freidman (FR), Flynn-Wall-Qzawa (FWO), Kissinger-Akahira-Sunose (KAS), Starink (STK), Kissinger (K), and Vyazovkin (VY) for the determination of the activation energy (Ea). TGA showed two reaction stages: the main one at 550-750 K and the second with 700-810 K. But only the first step has been considered in calculating Ea. The average activation energy values for the conversion range (0.1-0.7) are between minimum 104 kJ mol-1 by VY to maximum 199 kJ mol-1 by FR. Model-fitting has been applied by combing Coats-Redfern (CR) with the master plot (Criado's) to identify the most convenient reaction mechanism. Ea values gained by the above six models were very similar with the average value of (126 kJ mol-1) by CR. The reaction order models-Second order (F2) was recommended as the best mechanism reaction for PVA pyrolysis. Mechanisms were confirmed by the compensation effect. Finally, (∆H, ∆G, and ∆S) parameters were presented and proved that the reaction is endothermic.

Anatomically realistic aortic dissection simulator as a potential training tool for point-of-care ultrasound

Aim

Simulators for aortic dissection diagnosis are limited by complex anatomy influencing the accuracy of point-of-care ultrasound for diagnosing aortic dissection. Therefore, this study aimed to create a healthy ascending aorta and class DeBakey, type II aortic dissection simulator as a potential point-of-care ultrasound training model.

Material and methods

3D mould simulators were created based on computed tomography images of one healthy and one DeBakey type II aortic dissection patient. In the next step, two polyvinyl alcohol-based and two silicone-based simulators were synthesised.

Results

The results of the scanning electron microscope assessment showed an aortic dissection simulator's surface with disorganised surface texture and higher root mean square (RMS or Rq) value than the healthy model of polyvinyl alcohol (RqAD = 20.28 > RqAAo = 10.26) and silicone (RqAD = 33.8 > RqAAo = 23.07). The ultrasound assessment of diameter aortic dissection showed higher than the healthy ascending aorta in polyvinyl alcohol (dAD = 28.2 mm > dAAo = 20.2 mm) and Si (dAD = 31.0 mm > dAAo = 22.4 mm), while the wall thickness of aortic dissection showed thinner than the healthy aorta in polyvinyl alcohol, which is comparable with the actual aorta measurement. The intimal flap of aortic dissection was able to replicate and showed a false lumen in the ultrasound images. The flap was measured quantitatively, indicating that the intimal flap was hyperechoic.

Conclusions

The simulators were able to replicate the surface morphology and echogenicity of the intimal flap, which is a linear hyperechoic area representing the separation of the aorta wall.

PVA-TiO2 Nanocomposite Hydrogel as Immobilization Carrier for Gas-to-Liquid Wastewater Treatment

This study investigates the development of polyvinyl alcohol (PVA) gel matrices for biomass immobilization in wastewater treatment. The PVA hydrogels were prepared through a freezing-thawing (F-T) cross-linking process and reinforced with high surface area nanoparticles to improve their mechanical stability and porosity. The PVA/nanocomposite hydrogels were prepared using two different nanoparticle materials: iron oxide (Fe3O2) and titanium oxide (TiO2). The effects of the metal oxide nanoparticle type and content on the pore structure, hydrogel bonding, and mechanical and viscoelastic properties of the cross-linked hydrogel composites were investigated. The most durable PVA/nanoparticles matrix was then tested in the bioreactor for the biological treatment of wastewater. Morphological analysis showed that the reinforcement of PVA gel with Fe2O3 and TiO2 nanoparticles resulted in a compact nanocomposite hydrogel with regular pore distribution. The FTIR analysis highlighted the formation of bonds between nanoparticles and hydrogel, which caused more interaction within the polymeric matrix. Furthermore, the mechanical strength and Young's modulus of the hydrogel composites were found to depend on the type and content of the nanoparticles. The most remarkable improvement in the mechanical strength of the PVA/nanoparticles composites was obtained by incorporating 0.1 wt% TiO2 and 1.0 wt% Fe2O3 nanoparticles. However, TiO2 showed more influence on the mechanical strength, with more than 900% improvement in Young's modulus for TiO2-reinforced PVA hydrogel. Furthermore, incorporating TiO2 nanoparticles enhanced hydrogel stability but did not affect the biodegradation of organic pollutants in wastewater. These results suggest that the PVA-TiO2 hydrogel has the potential to be used as an effective carrier for biomass immobilization and wastewater treatment.

Electrospun PVA Fibers for Drug Delivery: A Review

Innovation in biomedical science is always a field of interest for researchers. Drug delivery, being one of the key areas of biomedical science, has gained considerable significance. The utilization of simple yet effective techniques such as electrospinning has undergone significant development in the field of drug delivery. Various polymers such as PEG (polyethylene glycol), PLGA (Poly(lactic-co-glycolic acid)), PLA(Polylactic acid), and PCA (poly(methacrylate citric acid)) have been utilized to prepare electrospinning-based drug delivery systems (DDSs). Polyvinyl alcohol (PVA) has recently gained attention because of its biocompatibility, biodegradability, non-toxicity, and ideal mechanical properties as these are the key factors in developing DDSs. Moreover, it has shown promising results in developing DDSs individually and when combined with natural and synthetic polymers such as chitosan and polycaprolactone (PCL). Considering the outstanding properties of PVA, the aim of this review paper was therefore to summarize these recent advances by highlighting the potential of electrospun PVA for drug delivery systems.

Plant-based Biomass/Polyvinyl Alcohol Gels for Flexible Sensors

Flexible sensors show great application potential in wearable electronics, human-computer interaction, medical health, bionic electronic skin and other fields. Compared with rigid sensors, hydrogel-based devices are more flexible and biocompatible and can easily fit the skin or be implanted into the body, making them more advantageous in the field of flexible electronics. In all designs, polyvinyl alcohol (PVA) series hydrogels exhibit high mechanical strength, excellent sensitivity and fatigue resistance, which make them promising candidates for flexible electronic sensing devices. This paper has reviewed the latest progress of PVA/plant-based biomass hydrogels in the construction of flexible sensor applications. We first briefly introduced representative plant biomass materials, including sodium alginate, phytic acid, starch, cellulose and lignin, and summarized their unique physical and chemical properties. After that, the design principles and performance indicators of hydrogel sensors are highlighted, and representative examples of PVA/plant-based biomass hydrogel applications in wearable electronics are illustrated. Finally, the future research is briefly prospected. We hope it can promote the research of novel green flexible sensors based on PVA/biomass hydrogel.

Immobilization of BoPAL3 Phenylalanine Ammonia-Lyase on Electrospun Nanofibrous Membranes of Polyvinyl Alcohol/Nylon 6/Chitosan Crosslinked with Dextran Polyaldehyde

Phenylalanine ammonia-lyase (PAL, EC 4.3.1.24) is common in plants and catalyzes the formation of trans-cinnamic acid and ammonia via phenylalanine deamination. Recombinant Bambusa oldhamii BoPAL3 protein expressed in Escherichia coli was immobilized on an electrospun nanofibrous membrane using dextran polyaldehyde as a crosslinker. The immobilized BoPAL3 protein exhibited comparable kinetic properties with the free BoPAL3 protein and could be recycled for six consecutive cycles compared with the free BoPAL3 protein. The residual activity of the immobilized BoPAL3 protein was 84% after 30 days of storage at 4 °C, whereas the free BoPAL3 protein retained 56% residual activity in the same storage conditions. Furthermore, the resistance of the immobilized BoPAL3 protein to chemical denaturants was greatly increased. Therefore, the BoPAL3 protein can be immobilized using the natural dextran polyaldehyde crosslinker in place of the conventional chemical crosslinker. Nanofibrous membranes made from polyvinyl alcohol (PVA), nylon 6, and chitosan (CS) are incredibly stable and useful for future industrial applications.

Middle meningeal artery embolization without surgical evacuation for chronic subdural hematoma: a single-center experience of 209 cases

Background

Middle meningeal artery (MMA) embolization is a minimally invasive treatment option for new and recurrent chronic subdural hematomas (cSDH).

Objective

To examine the safety and efficacy profile of MMA embolization without surgical evacuation for cSDH patients.

Methods

A single-center retrospective study of patients with cSDHs treated by MMA embolization was undertaken. Patient demographics, hematoma characteristics, procedural details, and clinical and radiological outcomes were collected. The primary outcome was the need for retreatment, and the secondary outcomes were at least a 50% reduction in the maximum width of cSDH on the last CT imaging, complications, and an improvement in the modified Rankin scale (mRS) score. All results were presented as descriptive statistics.

Results

A total of 209 MMA embolizations were successfully performed on 144 patients. Polyvinyl alcohol particles were the primary embolization agent in all procedures. Of the total of 206 cSDH, the median maximum width at pre-intervention and last follow-up were 12 and 3 mm, respectively, and the median reduction percentage was 77.5%, with a >50% improvement observed in 72.8% at the last follow-up imaging. A total of 13.8% of patients needed retreatment for recurrent, refractory, or symptomatic hematomas after embolization. The mRS score improved in 71 (49.3%) patients. Of 144 patients, 4 (2.8%) experienced complications related to the procedure, and 12 (8.4%) died during follow-up due to causes unrelated to the MMA embolization procedures.

Conclusion

This study supports the fact that MMA embolization without surgical evacuation is a safe and effective minimally invasive option for the treatment of cSDHs.

Characterization and Morphology of Nanocomposite Hydrogels with a 3D Network Structure Prepared Using Attapulgite-Enhanced Polyvinyl Alcohol

In this investigation, purified attapulgite (ATT) and polyvinyl alcohol (PVA) were utilized to fabricate nanocomposite hydrogels and a xerogel, with a focus on studying the impact of minor additions of ATT on the properties of the PVA nanocomposite hydrogels and xerogel. The findings demonstrated that at a concentration of 0.75% ATT, the water content and gel fraction of the PVA nanocomposite hydrogel reached their peak. Conversely, the nanocomposite xerogel with 0.75% ATT reduced its swelling and porosity to the minimum. SEM and EDS analyses revealed that when the ATT concentration was at or below 0.5%, nano-sized ATT could be evenly distributed in the PVA nanocomposite xerogel. However, when the concentration of ATT rose to 0.75% or higher, the ATT began to aggregate, resulting in a decrease in porous structure and the disruption of certain 3D porous continuous structures. The XRD analysis further affirmed that at an ATT concentration of 0.75% or higher, a distinct ATT peak emerged in the PVA nanocomposite xerogel. It was observed that as the content of ATT increased, the concavity and convexity of the xerogel surface, as well as the surface roughness, decreased. The results also confirmed that the ATT was evenly distributed in the PVA, and a combination of hydrogen bonds and ether bonds resulted in a more stable gel structure. The tensile properties exhibited that when compared with pure PVA hydrogel, the maximum tensile strength and elongation at break were achieved at an ATT concentration of 0.5%, indicating increases of 23.0% and 11.8%, respectively. The FTIR analysis results showed that the ATT and PVA could generate an ether bond, further confirming that ATT could enhance the PVA properties. The TGA analysis showed that the thermal degradation temperature peaked when the ATT concentration was at 0.5%, providing further evidence that the compactness of the nanocomposite hydrogel and the dispersion of the nanofiller was superior, contributing to a substantial increase in the mechanical properties of the nanocomposite hydrogel. Finally, the dye adsorption results displayed a significant rise in dye removal efficiency for methylene blue with the increase in the ATT concentration. At an ATT concentration of 1%, the removal efficiency rose by 103% compared with that of the pure PVA xerogel.

PVA electrospun fibers coated with PPy nanoparticles for wearable strain sensors

Current conductive polymers win wide applications in smart strain/stress sensors, bioinspired actuators, and wearable electronics. This paper investigates a novel strain sensor by using conductive polypyrrole (PPy) nanoparticles coated polyvinyl alcohol (PVA) fibers as matrix. The flexible, water-resistant PVA fibers are initially prepared by combined electrospinning and annealing techniques, and then are coated with PPy nanoparticles through in situ polymerization. The resultant PPy@PVA fibers exhibit stable, favorable electrical conductivities due to the uniform point-to-point connections among PPy nanoparticles, e.g. after three-time' polymerizations, the PPy@PVA3 fiber film presents a sheet resistance of ∼840 Ω/sq and a bulk conductivity of ∼32.1 mS/cm. Cyclic sensing tests reveal that, PPy@PVA sensors show linear relationships between the relative resistance variations and the applied strains, e.g. the linear deviation of PPy@PVA3 is only 0.9 % within 33 % strain. After long-term stretching/releasing cycles, the PPy@PVA sensor exhibits stable, durable, and reversible sensing behaviors, no evident "drift" is observed over 1,000 cycles (5,000 seconds). Efficient Pervaporation for Ethanol Dehydration: Ultrasonic Spraying Preparation of Polyvinyl Alcohol (PVA)/Ti3C2Tx Nanosheet Mixed Matrix Membranes

Polyvinyl alcohol (PVA) pervaporation (PV) membranes have been extensively studied in the field of ethanol dehydration. The incorporation of two-dimensional (2D) nanomaterials into the PVA matrix can greatly improve the hydrophilicity of the PVA polymer matrix, thereby enhancing its PV performance. In this work, self-made MXene (Ti₃C₂T_x-based) nanosheets were dispersed in the PVA polymer matrix, and the composite membranes were fabricated by homemade ultrasonic spraying equipment with poly(tetrafluoroethylene) (PTFE) electrospun nanofibrous membrane as support. Due to the gentle coating of ultrasonic spraying and following continuous steps of drying and thermal crosslinking, a thin (~1.5 μm), homogenous and defect-free PVA-based separation layer was fabricated on the PTFE support. The prepared rolls of the PVA composite membranes were investigated systematically. The PV performance of the membrane was significantly improved by increasing the solubility and diffusion rate of the membranes to the water molecules through the hydrophilic channels constructed by the MXene nanosheets in the membrane matrix. The water flux and separation factor of the PVA/MXene mixed matrix membrane (MMM) were dramatically increased to 1.21 kg·m^-2·h^-1 and 1126.8, respectively. With high mechanical strength and structural stability, the prepared PGM-0 membrane suffered 300 h of the PV test without any performance degradation. Considering the promising results, it is likely that the membrane would improve the efficiency of the PV process and reduce energy consumption in the ethanol dehydration.

Poly(vinyl alcohol)/Silk Fibroin/Ag-NPs Composite Nanofibers as a Substrate for MG-63 Cells' Growth

Nanofiber scaffolds of polyvinyl alcohol, silk fibroin from Bombyx mori cocoons, and silver nanoparticles were developed as a substrate for MG-63 growth. The fiber morphology, mechanical properties, thermal degradation, chemical composition, and water contact angle were investigated. In vitro tests were performed by the cell viability MTS test of MG-63 cells on electrospun PVA scaffolds, mineralization was analyzed by alizarin red, and the alkaline phosphatase (ALP) assay was evaluated. At higher PVA concentrations, Young's modulus (E) increased. The addition of fibroin and silver nanoparticles improved the thermal stability of PVA scaffolds. FTIR spectra indicated characteristic absorption peaks related to the chemical structures of PVA, fibroin, and Ag-NPs, demonstrating good interactions between them. The contact angle of the PVA scaffolds decreased with the incorporation of fibroin and showed hydrophilic characteristics. In all concentrations, MG-63 cells on PVA/fibroin/Ag-NPs scaffolds had higher cell viability than PVA pristine. On day ten of culture, PVA18/SF/Ag-NPs showed the highest mineralization, observed by the alizarin red test. PVA10/SF/Ag-NPs presented the highest alkaline phosphatase activity after an incubation time of 37 h. The achievements indicate the potential of the nanofibers of PVA18/SF/Ag-NPs as a possible substitute for bone tissue engineering (BTE).

Large-Scale and Highly Efficient Production of Ultrafine PVA Fibers by Electro-Centrifugal Spinning for NH3 Adsorption

Ultrafine Polyvinyl alcohol (PVA) fibers have an outstanding potential in various applications, especially in absorbing fields. In this manuscript, an electrostatic-field-assisted centrifugal spinning system was designed to improve the production efficiency of ultrafine PVA fibers from PVA aqueous solution for NH₃ adsorption. It was established that the fiber production efficiency using this self-designed system could be about 1000 times higher over traditional electrospinning system. The produced PVA fibers establish high morphology homogeneity. The impact of processing variables of the constructed spinning system including rotation speed, needle size, liquid feeding rate, and voltage on fiber morphology and diameter was systematically investigated by SEM studies. To acquire homogeneous ultrafine PVA fiber membranes, the orthogonal experiment was also conducted to optimize the spinning process parameters. The impact weight of different studied parameters on the spinning performance was thus provided. The experimental results showed that the morphology of micro/nano-fibers can be well controlled by adjusting the spinning process parameters. Ultrafine PVA fibers with the diameter of 2.55 μm were successfully obtained applying the parameters, including rotation speed (6500 rpm), needle size (0.51 mm), feeding rate (3000 mL h^-1), and voltage (20 kV). Furthermore, the obtained ultrafine PVA fiber mat was demonstrated to be capable of selectively adsorbing NH₃ gas relative to CO₂, thus making it promising for NH₃ storage and other environmental purification applications.

Selective Blocking of Graphene Defects Using Polyvinyl Alcohol through Hydrophilicity Difference

Defects on graphene over a micrometer in size were selectively blocked using polyvinyl alcohol through the formation of hydrogen bonding with defects. Because this hydrophilic PVA does not prefer to be located on the hydrophobic graphene surface, PVA selectively filled hydrophilic defects on graphene after the process of deposition through the solution. The mechanism of the selective deposition via hydrophilic-hydrophilic interactions was also supported by scanning tunneling microscopy and atomic force microscopy analysis of selective deposition of hydrophobic alkanes on hydrophobic graphene surface and observation of PVA initial growth at defect edges.

Bond Behavior of Steel Rebar Embedded in Cementitious Composites Containing Polyvinyl Alcohol (PVA) Fibers and Carbon Nanotubes (CNTs)

In this study, pull-out tests were conducted to investigate the bond behavior of a rebar embedded in cementitious composites with polyvinyl alcohol (PVA) fibers and carbon nanotubes (CNTs). In the cementitious composites, the binder consisted of ordinary Portland cement, blast furnace slag, and fly ash, with a weight ratio of 39.5, 21.0 and 39.5%, respectively, while the nonbinder consisted of quartzite sand, lightweight aggregate, superplasticizer, and shrinkage-reducing admixture. The water/binder ratio and volume fractions of the PVA fibers were 32.9% and 2.07%, respectively. In the test program, the rebar diameter (D13, D16, and D19) and CNTs mix ratio (0.0, 0.1, 0.2, and 0.3 wt.%) were considered as the test variables. The test results showed that the bond strength of a rebar increased as the rebar diameter decreased or as the CNTs mix ratio increased. Based on the test results, a new, simple model has been proposed with consideration of the rebar diameter, as well as the CNTs mix ratio. Comparing the test results, it was investigated that the proposed model generally represented the bond behavior well, including the bond strength and the corresponding slip of a rebar embedded in PVA cementitious composites, with or without CNTs.

Wound healing performance of PVA/PCL based electrospun nanofiber incorporated green synthetized CuNPs and Quercus infectoria extracts

In this study, copper nanoparticles (CuNPs) were synthetized through green chemistry approach using C. officinalis flowers extract. The biosynthetized nanoparticles were characterized by FESEM, XRD, DLS and FTIR analysis. Subsequently, PCL nanofiber was fabricated as first supportive layer by electrospinning method. Afterward, PVA/Quercus infectoria galls (QLG) extracts/biosynthetized CuNPs blending solution was electrospinned as second bioactive topical layer. The morphology, physicochemical properties and biological characteristics of the produced PCL, PCL/PVA, PCL/PVA/CuNPs, PCL/PVA/QLG and PCL/PVA/QLG/CuNPs were investigated. Eventually, in vivo wound healing effectiveness was examined. Histologic investigation was carried out for visualization of the healing wounds architecture in different treated groups. FESEM, XRD and DLS assays confirmed the successful synthesis of CuNPs in range of 40-70 nm and FTIR spectrum approve the presence of functional constituents of C. officinalis extract on synthesized CuNPs. The incorporation of CuNPs and QLG extract into PCL/PVA based nanofibers improved their biological capabilities and physicochemical properties. Furthermore, PCL/PVA/QLG/CuNPs illustrated significant wound healing potentials and excellent antibacterial function against at wounds infected with MRSA. Histological assay demonstrated complete wound healing and less inflammation on day 10th. These outcomes recommended the utilization of PCL/PVA/QLG/CuNPs as a novel promising wound dressings with considerable antibacterial features.

Investigating the Performance of a Zinc Oxide Impregnated Polyvinyl Alcohol-Based Low-Cost Cation Exchange Membrane in Microbial Fuel Cells

The current study investigated the development and application of lithium (Li)-doped zinc oxide (ZnO)-impregnated polyvinyl alcohol (PVA) proton exchange membrane separator in a single chambered microbial fuel cell (MFC). Physiochemical analysis was performed via FT-IR, XRD, TEM, and AC impedance analysis to characterize thus synthesized Li-doped ZnO. PVA-ZnO-Li with 2.0% Li incorporation showed higher power generation in MFC. Using coulombic efficiency and current density, the impact of oxygen crossing on the membrane cathode assembly (MCA) area was evaluated. Different amounts of Li were incorporated into the membrane to optimize its electrochemical behavior and to increase proton conductivity while reducing biofouling. When acetate wastewater was treated in MFC using a PVA-ZnO-Li-based MCA, the maximum power density of 6.3 W/m³ was achieved. These observations strongly support our hypothesis that PVA-ZnO-Li can be an efficient and affordable separator for MFC.

Facile Fabrication of Flexible Polymeric Membranes with Micro and Nano Apertures over Large Areas

Freestanding, flexible and open through-hole polymeric micro- and nanostructured membranes were successfully fabricated over large areas (>16 cm2) via solvent removal of sacrificial scaffolds filled with polymer resin by spontaneous capillary flow. Most of the polymeric membranes were obtained through a rapid UV curing processes via cationic or free radical UV polymerisation. Free standing microstructured membranes were fabricated across a range of curable polymer materials, including: EBECRYL3708 (radical UV polymerisation), CUVR1534 (cationic UV polymerisation) UV lacquer, fluorinated perfluoropolyether urethane methacrylate UV resin (MD700), optical adhesive UV resin with high refractive index (NOA84) and medical adhesive UV resin (1161-M). The present method was also extended to make a thermal set polydimethylsiloxane (PDMS) membranes. The pore sizes for the as-fabricated membranes ranged from 100 µm down to 200 nm and membrane thickness could be varied from 100 µm down to 10 µm. Aspect ratios as high as 16.7 were achieved for the 100 µm thick membranes for pore diameters of approximately 6 µm. Wide-area and uniform, open through-hole 30 µm thick membranes with 15 µm pore size were fabricated over 44 × 44 mm2 areas. As an application example, arrays of Au nanodots and Pd nanodots, as small as 130 nm, were deposited on Si substrates using a nanoaperture polymer through-hole membrane as a stencil.

Experimental Study on PVA-MgO Composite Improvement of Sandy Soil

Materials with violent hydration reaction such as cement are used to solidify sandy soil slopes, which will cause destructive damage to the ecology of the slopes. In this paper, polyvinyl alcohol (PVA) and activated magnesium oxide (MgO) are used to improve sandy soil, and the effects of the dosage and curing age of modifiers on the mechanical properties of solidified sandy soil are studied. The dry-wet durability of the composite improved sandy soil is analyzed using a dry-wet cycle test, and the improvement mechanism of PVA and activated magnesium oxide is revealed using an electron microscope. The results show that the curing effect of polyvinyl alcohol and activated magnesium oxide on sand particles is better than that of polyvinyl alcohol alone. The compressive strength of improved soil samples increases with the increase of curing time, and magnesium oxide as an improved material needs appropriate reaction conditions to give full play to its role. The compressive strength of composite improved samples increases first and then decreases during the dry-wet cycle. Through the observation of microstructure, it can be seen that the cementing material wraps and connects the sand particles, and the cementing material of the sample after the dry-wet cycle develops more completely; if the magnesium oxide content is high, cracks may appear inside the sample.

Ciprofloxacin-loaded dissolving polymeric microneedles as a potential therapeutic for the treatment of S. aureus skin infections

Microneedles have been widely studied for many topical and transdermal therapeutics due to their ability to painlessly puncture the skin, thereby bypassing the stratum corneum, the main skin barrier. In this study, ciprofloxacin (CIP) was loaded into dissolving polymeric microneedles prepared by a two-layer centrifugation method as a potential treatment of skin infections such as cellulitis. The polymers used were polyvinyl alcohol (PVA) and polyvinylpyrrolidone (PVP). Two formulations were investigated, namely CIP_MN1, composed of 10 mg ciprofloxacin incorporated into a polymer matrix of PVA and PVP with a weight ratio of (9:1), and CIP_MN2, composed of 10 mg ciprofloxacin incorporated into PVA polymer. CIP_MN1 and CIP_MN2 showed a mean microneedle height of 188 and 179 µm, respectively. Since Parafilm has been proven as a model to examine the perforation of microneedles in skin, it was used to evaluate the ability of microneedles to perforate the skin. CIP_MN1 showed almost complete perforation of Parafilm, 190 pores, compared to CIP_MN2 which created only 85 pores in Parafilm, and therefore CIP_MN1 was used for subsequent studies. Examining CIP_MN1 on agarose gel as an in vitro model of human skin showed that the formula was able to fully perforate the agarose gel. Moreover, this formula showed significantly greater antimicrobial activity (p < 0.0001) compared to a free gel of ciprofloxacin against Staphylococcus aureus in an agarose gel-based model. This was evidenced by a zone of inhibition of 29 mm for the microneedle formulation of ciprofloxacin (CIP_MN1) compared to 2 mm for the free gel of ciprofloxacin. Furthermore, the CIP_MN1 showed complete dissolution in human skin after 60 min from application. Finally, the skin deposition of CIP_MN1 was investigated in ex vivo excised human skin. CIP_MN1 showed significantly more deposition of ciprofloxacin in deeper skin layers compared to the free gel of ciprofloxacin, and the released ciprofloxacin from the microneedles tends to migrate to deeper layers with time. Collectively, these results suggest that CIP_MN1 can be a potential delivery system for the treatment of S. aureus skin infections.

Preparation and properties of N-glycosylated chitosan/polyvinyl alcohol hydrogels for use in wound dressings

Chitosan and its derivatives show potent biocompatibility, biodegradability, antimicrobial activity, hemostatic effects, and wound healing properties. Their application in wound dressings has garnered substantial research interest. In this work, we prepared a drug-loaded hydrogel by mixing N-glycosylated chitosan with polyvinyl alcohol (PVA), followed by loading of ofloxacin. A 2:1 volume ratio of chitosan to PVA was found to be optimal based on swelling and water evaporation rates. The slow-drug-release performance of the blended hydrogel was best when the ofloxacin loading was 5.0%. The ofloxacin-loaded hydrogel shows excellent antimicrobial properties in vitro and wound healing ability in an in vivo rabbit full-thickness excision wound model. The chitosan/PVA blended hydrogel has great potential for use in wound dressings and sustained drug release.

Humidity-Sensing Chipless RFID Tag with Enhanced Sensitivity Using an Interdigital Capacitor Structure

An eight-bit chipless radio frequency identification tag providing humidity sensing and identification information is proposed. A compact, enhanced-sensitivity resonator based on an interdigital capacitor (IDC) structure is designed for humidity sensing, whereas seven electric-field-coupled inductor capacitor (ELC) resonators are used for identification information. These eight resonators are placed in a two-by-four array arrangement. A step-by-step investigation for the effect of varying the number of elements and array configuration on the resonant frequency and radar cross-section (RCS) magnitude of the IDC resonator is conducted. The RCS value of the resonant peak frequency for the IDC resonator increases as the number of array elements placed nearby increases due to the mutual coupling among the elements, and the increase in the RCS value becomes larger as the number of arrays increases in the vertical direction. Polyvinyl alcohol (PVA) is coated on the IDC-based resonator at a thickness of 0.02 mm. A non-reflective temperature and humidity chamber is fabricated using Styrofoam, and the relative humidity (RH) is varied from 50% to 80% in 10% intervals at 25 °C in order to measure a bistatic RCS of the proposed tag. The humidity sensing performance of the IDC resonator in the proposed tag is measured by the shift in the resonant peak frequency and the RCS value, and is compared with a single ELC resonator. Experiment results show that when RH increased from 50% to 80%, the sensitivities of both the resonant peak frequency and the RCS value of the IDC resonator were better than those of the ELC resonator. The variation in the RCS value is much larger compared to the resonant peak frequency for both IDC and ELC resonators. In addition, the resonant peak frequency and RCS value of the PVA-coated IDC-based resonator change, whereas those of the other seven resonators without a PVA coating do not change.

PVA-Based Hydrogels: Promising Candidates for Articular Cartilage Repair

The complex, gradient physiological structure of articular cartilage is a severe hindrance of its self-repair, leaving the clinical treatment of cartilage defects a demanding issue to be addressed. Currently applied tissue engineering treatments and traditional non-tissue engineering treatments have different limitations, for example, cell dedifferentiation, immune rejection, and prosthesis-related complications. Thus, studies have been focusing on seeking promising candidates for novel cartilage repair methods. Polyvinyl alcohol (PVA) hydrogels with excellent biocompatibility and tunable material properties have become the alternatives. For pure PVA hydrogels, the mechanical strength and lubricity are not capable of replacing articular cartilage until proper modifications are done. This paper summarizes the research progress in PVA hydrogels, including the preparation, modification, and cartilage-repair-aimed biomimetic improvements. Design guidance of PVA hydrogels is put forward as assistance to functional hydrogel preparation. Finally, the prospects and main obstacles of PVA hydrogels are discussed.

3D-Printed Polycaprolactone Reinforced Hydrogel as an Artificial TMJ Disc

The replacement of a damaged temporomandibular joint (TMJ) disc remains a long-standing challenge in clinical settings. No study has reported a material with comprehensively excellent properties similar to a natural TMJ disc. In this work, we designed a novel artificial TMJ disc using polyvinyl alcohol (PVA) hydrogel crosslinked by cyclic freeze-thaw and reinforced by 3D-printed polycaprolactone (PCL) implants. The mechanical properties and surface morphologies of the artificial TMJ disc and the natural goat TMJ disc were tested and compared via compression, tensile, cyclic compression/tensile, creep, friction, scanning electron microscopy, and atomic force microscopy. The fibroblasts and chondrocytes were cultured on the artificial TMJ disc for 1, 3, and 5 d for cytotoxicity testing. Importantly, the artificial discs were placed into the TMJs of goats in an innovative way to induce disc defect repair for 12 wk. The PVA + PCL artificial disc demonstrated mechanical strength similar to that of natural disc, as well as 1) better fatigue resistance, viscoelasticity, and hydrophilicity; 2) less creep; and 3) low friction, cytotoxicity, and cell adhesion. By repairing the defects of the TMJ disc in goats, the artificial disc demonstrated the ability to maintain joint stability and protect condylar cartilage and bone from damage. These promising results indicate the feasibility of using a PVA + PCL artificial TMJ disc in a clinical context.

Topical Administration of SLN-Based Gene Therapy for the Treatment of Corneal Inflammation by De Novo IL-10 Production

One of the main challenges in gene therapy is the issue of delivery, and it is especially relevant for the success of gene therapy in the cornea. In the present work, eye drops containing biocompatible non-viral vectors based on solid lipid nanoparticles (SLNs) as gene delivery systems to induce the expression of interleukin 10 (IL-10) were designed to address the treatment of corneal inflammation. Two kinds of SLNs combined with different ligands (protamine, dextran, or hyaluronic acid (HA)) and formulated with polyvinyl alcohol (PVA) were prepared. SLN-based vectors were characterized in terms of size, adhesiveness, viscosity, and pH, before topical administration to wild type and IL-10 knock out (KO) mice. The formulations showed a homogenous particle size below 400 nm and a positive surface charge to favor bioadhesion; the incorporation of PVA improved the corneal penetration. After three days of treatment by topical instillation, SLN-based vectors mainly transfected corneal epithelial cells, HA-formulations being the most effective ones. IL-10 was capable of reaching even the endothelial layer. Corneal sections showed no histological change and formulations seemed to be well tolerated after repeated topical administration. These promising results highlight the possible contribution of non-viral gene augmentation therapy to the future clinical approach of corneal gene therapy.

Evaluation of Repellent Effectiveness of Polyvinyl Alcohol/Eucalyptus globules Nanofibrous Membranes against Forcipomyia taiwana

This study aims to develop nanofibrous membranes where Eucalyptus globules oil (EGO) is wrapped in polyvinyl alcohol (PVA). The EGO-based nanofibrous membranes are then evaluated for the protection against Forcipomyia taiwana (F. taiwana). In the first stage, the PVA solutions are formulated with different concentrations and are measured for viscosity and electrical conductivity. In the next stage, PVA solution and EGO are blended at different ratios and electrospun into PVA/EGO nanofibrous membranes (i.e., EGO-based repellent). In this study, a PVA concentration of 14 wt% has a positive influence on fiber formation. Furthermore, the finest nanofibers of 291 nm are presented when the voltage is 15 kV. The repellent efficacy can reach 80% in a 60-min release when the repellent is composed of a PVA/oil ratio of 90/10. To sum up, the nanofibrous membranes of essential oil exhibit good repellent efficacy against F. taiwana and significant slow-release effect, instead of adversely affecting the cell viability.

The Role of Nanoparticle Shapes and Structures in Material Characterisation of Polyvinyl Alcohol (PVA) Bionanocomposite Films

Three different types of nanoparticles, 1D Cloisite 30B clay nanoplatelets, 2D halloysite nanotubes (HNTs), and 3D nanobamboo charcoals (NBCs) were employed to investigate the impact of nanoparticle shapes and structures on the material performance of polyvinyl alcohol (PVA) bionanocomposite films in terms of their mechanical and thermal properties, morphological structures, and nanomechanical behaviour. The overall results revealed the superior reinforcement efficiency of NBCs to Cloisite 30B clays and HNTs, owing to their typical porous structures to actively interact with PVA matrices in the combined formation of strong mechanical and hydrogen bondings. Three-dimensional NBCs also achieved better nanoparticle dispersibility when compared with 1D Cloisite 30B clays and 2D HNTs along with higher thermal stability, which was attributed to their larger interfacial regions when characterised for the nanomechanical behaviour of corresponding bionanocomposite films. Our study offers an insightful guidance to the appropriate selection of nanoparticles as effective reinforcements and the further sophisticated design of bionanocomposite materials.

Synergistic Effects of Two-Dimensional MXene and Ammonium Polyphosphate on Enhancing the Fire Safety of Polyvinyl Alcohol Composite Aerogels

Fire and smoke suppressions of polyvinyl alcohol (PVA) aerogels are urgently required due to the serious fire hazard they present. MXene, a 2D transition-metal carbide with many excellent properties, is considered a promising synergist for providing excellent flame retardant performance. PVA/ammonium polyphosphate (APP)/transition metal carbide (MXene) composite aerogels were prepared via the freeze-drying method to enhance the flame retardancy. Thermogravimetric analysis, limiting oxygen index, vertical burning, and cone calorimeter tests were executed to investigate the thermal stability and flame retardancy of PVA/APP/MXene (PAM) composite aerogels. The results demonstrated that MXene boosted the flame retardancy of PVA-APP, and that PAM-2 (with 2.0 wt% MXene loading) passed the V-0 rating, and reached a maximum LOI value of 42%; Moreover, MXene endowed the PVA-APP system with excellent fire and smoke suppression performance, as the the peak heat release rate and peak smoke production rate were significantly reduced by 55% and 74% at 1.0 wt% MXene loading. The flame retardant mechanism was systematically studied, MXene facilitated the generation of compact intumescent residues via ita catalyst effects, thus further restraining the release of heat and smoke. This work provides a simple route to improve the flame retardancy of PVA aerogels via the synergistic effect of MXene and APP.

Feasibility of Using 3D Printed Polyvinyl Alcohol (PVA) for Creating Self-Healing Vascular Tunnels in Cement System

Pursuing long-term self-healing infrastructures has gained popularity in the construction field. Vascular networks have the potential to achieve long-term self-healing in cementitious infrastructures. To avoid further monitoring of non-cementitious tubes, sacrificial material can be used as a way of creating hollow channels. In this research, we report a new method for fabrication of complex 3D internal hollow tunnels using 3D printing of polyvinyl alcohol (PVA). The behaviour of 3D printed PVA structures in cement pastes was investigated using computed-tomography (CT) combined with X-ray diffraction (XRD), Fourier-transform infrared spectroscopy (FTIR), and scanning electron microscopy with energy dispersive spectroscopy (SEM/EDX). Results showed that (i) 1300 min were needed to fully dissolve 1 g of a 3D printed PVA structure, and different pH solutions did not significantly change the PVA dissolving process compared with a neutral environment; (ii) a low water/cement ratio can minimize early stage cracking resulting from PVA expansion; (iii) and PVA-cement interaction products were mainly calcite and a Ca-polymer compound. In conclusion, controlling the PVA expansion by decreasing the water/cement (w/c) ratio provides a promising approach to achieve 3D hollow channels in cement and, therefore, makes it possible to create complex tunnels within self-healing cementitious materials.

Development of a Magnetic Compound Fluid Rubber Stability Sensor and a Novel Production Technique via Combination of Natural, Chloroprene and Silicone Rubbers

Expanding on our previous report, we investigate the stability of a magnetic compound fluid (MCF) rubber sensor that was developed for a variety of engineering applications. To stabilize this sensor, we proposed a novel combination technique that facilitates the addition of dimethylpolysiloxane (PDMS) to natural rubber (NR)-latex or chloroprene rubber (CR)-latex using polyvinyl alcohol (PVA) by experimentally and theoretically investigating issues related to instability. This technique is one of several other novel combinations of diene and non-diene rubbers. Silicone oil or rubber with PDMS can be combined with NR-latex and CR-latex because of PVA’s emulsion polymerization behavior. In addition, owing to electrolytic polymerization based on the combination of PDMS and PVA, MCF rubber is highly porous and can be infiltrated in any liquid. Hence, the fabrication of novel intelligent rubbers using any intelligent fluid is feasible. By assembling infiltrated MCF rubber sheets and by conducting electrolytic polymerization of MCF rubber liquid with a hydrate using the adhesive technique as presented in a previous paper, it is possible to stabilize the MCF rubber sensor. This sensor is resistant to cold or hot water as well as γ-irradiation as shown in the previous report.

Stretchable ECM Patch Enhances Stem Cell Delivery for Post-MI Cardiovascular Repair

Current cell-based therapies administered after myocardial infarction (MI) show limited efficacy due to subpar cell retention in a dynamically beating heart. In particular, cardiac patches generally provide a cursory level of cell attachment due to the lack of an adequate microenvironment. From this perspective, decellularized cell-derived ECM (CDM) is attractive in its recapitulation of a natural biophysical environment for cells. Unfortunately, its weak physical property renders it difficult to retain in its original form, limiting its full potential. Here, a novel strategy to peel CDM off from its underlying substrate is proposed. By physically stamping it onto a polyvinyl alcohol hydrogel, the resulting stretchable extracellular matrix (ECM) membrane preserves the natural microenvironment of CDM, thereby conferring a biological interface to a viscoelastic membrane. Its various mechanical and biological properties are characterized and its capacity to improve cardiomyocyte functionality is demonstrated. Finally, evidence of enhanced stem cell delivery using the stretchable ECM membrane is presented, which leads to improved cardiac remodeling in a rat MI model. A new class of material based on natural CDM is envisioned for the enhanced delivery of cells and growth factors that have a known affinity with ECM.

[Research Progress of Polyvinyl Alcohol (PVA) Based on Hydrogel Dressings]

This review introduces a brief description on the featured properties of polyvinyl alcohol based on hydrogel dressings. During past ten years many new artificial polymeric dressings have been developed, which meet requirements of wound healing. This review mainly focuses on one representative of ideal polymeric wound dressing membranes, polyvinyl alcohol based hydrogel dressings. But as the hydrogels with single component have low mechanical strength, recent trends have offered composite hydrogel membranes to achieve the ideal wound dressing requirements.

Aggregation of human dental pulp cells into 3D spheroids enhances their migration ability after reseeding

Multicellular three-dimensional (3D) spheroids allow intimate cell-cell communication and cell-extracellular matrix interaction. Thus, 3D cell spheroids better mimic microenvironment in vivo than two-dimensional (2D) monolayer cultures. The purpose of this study was to evaluate the behaviors of human dental pulp cells (DPCs) cultured on chitosan and polyvinyl alcohol (PVA) membranes. The protein expression of hypoxia-inducible factor 1-α (HIF-1α) and vascular endothelial growth factor (VEGF), and the migration ability of the DPCs from 2D versus 3D environments were investigated. The results showed that both chitosan and PVA membranes support DPCs aggregation to form multicellular spheroids. In comparison to 2D cultures on tissue culture polystyrene, DPC spheroids exhibited higher protein expression of HIF-1α and VEGF. The treatment with YC-1 (inhibitor to HIF-1α) blocked the upregulation of VEGF, indicating a downstream event to HIF-1α expression. When DPC spheroids were collected and subjected to the transwell assay, the cells growing outward from 3D spheroids showed greater migration ability than those from 2D cultures. Moreover, DPCs aggregation and spheroid formation on chitosan membrane were abolished by Y-27632 (inhibitor to Rho-associated kinases), whereas the inhibitory effect did not exist on PVA membrane. This suggests that the mechanism regulating DPCs aggregation and spheroid formation on chitosan membrane is involved with the Rho-associated kinase signaling pathway. In summary, the multicellular spheroid structure was beneficial to the protein expression of HIF-1α and VEGF in DPCs and enhanced the migration ability of the cells climbing from spheroids. This study showed a new perspective in exploring novel strategies for DPC-based research and application.

Composite Cationic Exchange Membranes Prepared from Polyvinyl Alcohol (PVA) and Boronic Acid Copolymers for Alkaline Diffusion Dialysis

Boronic acid copolymers with a large number of functional groups were obtained via a free radical polymerization method. The corresponding composite membranes for alkaline diffusion dialysis (DD) were prepared by a crosslinking reaction between polyvinyl alcohol (PVA) and the as-obtained boronic acid copolymers. The composite membranes possessed water uptake (W_R) of 122.1–194.4%, ion exchange capacities (IECs) of 0.79–1.17 mmol/g, as well as both good mechanical stability (tensile strength of 40.7–49.9 MPa and elongation at break of 52.1–121.1%) and thermal stability. The as-prepared membranes were stable in 2 M NaOH solution at 65 °C with a swelling degree and mass loss of as-prepared membranes in the range of 305–368% and 9.2–22%, respectively. A NaOH/Na₂WO₄ mixture was used to investigate the separation properties of as-prepared membranes via the DD process. Results indicated that the dialysis coefficients of OH⁻ (U_OH) were in the range of 0.0079–0.0150 m/h, while the separation factors (S) were in the range of 26.6–53.2. The functional groups from boronic acid copolymer and –OH from PVA were demonstrated to promote the ion transport synergistically.

Characterization and Microstructure of Linear Electrode-Electrospun Graphene-Filled Polyvinyl Alcohol Nanofiber Films

With the aim of achieving controllable mass production of electrospun nanofiber films, this study proposes and investigates the feasibility of using a custom-made linear electrode- electrospun device to produce conductive graphene (GR)-filled polyvinyl alcohol (PVA) nanofibers. The film morphology and diameter of nanofibers are observed and measured to examine the effects of viscosity and conductivity of the PVA/GR mixtures. Likewise, the influence of the content of graphene on the hydrophilicity, electrical conductivity, electromagnetic interference shielding effectiveness (EMSE), and thermal stability of the PVA/GR nanofiber films is investigated. The test results show that the PVA/GR mixture has greater viscosity and electric conductivity than pure PVA solution and can be electrospun into PVA/GR nanofiber films that have good morphology and diameter distribution. The diameter of the nanofibers is 100 nm and the yield is 2.24 g/h, suggesting that the process qualifies for use in large-scale production. Increasing the content of graphene yields finer nanofibers, a smaller surface contact angle, and higher hydrophilicity of the nanofiber films. The presence of graphene is proven to improve the thermal stability and strengthens the EMSE by 20 dB at 150–1500 MHz. Mass production is proven to be feasible by the test results showing that PVA/GR nanofiber films can be used in the medical hygiene field.

Biomimetically Reinforced Polyvinyl Alcohol-Based Hybrid Scaffolds for Cartilage Tissue Engineering

Articular cartilage has a very limited regeneration capacity. Therefore, injury or degeneration of articular cartilage results in an inferior mechanical stability, load-bearing capacity, and lubrication capability. Here, we developed a biomimetic scaffold consisting of macroporous polyvinyl alcohol (PVA) sponges as a platform material for the incorporation of cell-embedded photocrosslinkable poly(ethylene glycol) diacrylate (PEGDA), PEGDA-methacrylated chondroitin sulfate (PEGDA-MeCS; PCS), or PEGDA-methacrylated hyaluronic acid (PEGDA-MeHA; PHA) within its pores to improve in vitro chondrocyte functions and subsequent in vivo ectopic cartilage tissue formation. Our findings demonstrated that chondrocytes encapsulated in PCS or PHA and loaded into macroporous PVA hybrid scaffolds maintained their physiological phenotypes during in vitro culture, as shown by the upregulation of various chondrogenic genes. Further, the cell-secreted extracellular matrix (ECM) improved the mechanical properties of the PVA-PCS and PVA-PHA hybrid scaffolds by 83.30% and 73.76%, respectively, compared to their acellular counterparts. After subcutaneous transplantation in vivo, chondrocytes on both PVA-PCS and PVA-PHA hybrid scaffolds significantly promoted ectopic cartilage tissue formation, which was confirmed by detecting cells positively stained with Safranin-O and for type II collagen. Consequently, the mechanical properties of the hybrid scaffolds were biomimetically reinforced by 80.53% and 210.74%, respectively, compared to their acellular counterparts. By enabling the recapitulation of biomimetically relevant structural and functional properties of articular cartilage and the regulation of in vivo mechanical reinforcement mediated by cell⁻matrix interactions, this biomimetic material offers an opportunity to control the desired mechanical properties of cell-laden scaffolds for cartilage tissue regeneration.

Analysis of 3D Prints by X-ray Computed Microtomography and Terahertz Pulsed Imaging

PURPOSE

A 3D printer was used to realise compartmental dosage forms containing multiple active pharmaceutical ingredient (API) formulations. This work demonstrates the microstructural characterisation of 3D printed solid dosage forms using X-ray computed microtomography (XμCT) and terahertz pulsed imaging (TPI).

METHODS

Printing was performed with either polyvinyl alcohol (PVA) or polylactic acid (PLA). The structures were examined by XμCT and TPI. Liquid self-nanoemulsifying drug delivery system (SNEDDS) formulations containing saquinavir and halofantrine were incorporated into the 3D printed compartmentalised structures and in vitro drug release determined.

RESULTS

A clear difference in terms of pore structure between PVA and PLA prints was observed by extracting the porosity (5.5% for PVA and 0.2% for PLA prints), pore length and pore volume from the XμCT data. The print resolution and accuracy was characterised by XμCT and TPI on the basis of the computer-aided design (CAD) models of the dosage form (compartmentalised PVA structures were 7.5 ± 0.75% larger than designed; n = 3).

CONCLUSIONS

The 3D printer can reproduce specific structures very accurately, whereas the 3D prints can deviate from the designed model. The microstructural information extracted by XμCT and TPI will assist to gain a better understanding about the performance of 3D printed dosage forms.

Degradation of polyvinyl alcohol in textile waste water by Microbacterium barkeri KCCM 10507 and Paenibacillus amylolyticus KCCM 10508

Microbacterium barkeri KCCM 10507 and Paenibacillus amylolyticus KCCM 10508 were isolated and identified for the degradation of polyvinyl alcohol (PVA) contained in textile waste water. Kinetic parameters such as growth rate and substrate utilization rate were determined using a pure culture of two isolated strains. The degradation rate by a mixed culture of two isolated strains was higher than that by single strain only. Also, the effect of polymerization degree on biodegradation was negligible, but initial PVA concentration was very sensitive to biodegradation. Forty-two per cent of PVA and 55% of chemical oxygen demand in textile waste water were removed by a mixed culture of two isolated strains after 5 days.

Interfacing polymeric scaffolds with primary pancreatic ductal adenocarcinoma cells to develop 3D cancer models

We analyzed the interactions between human primary cells from pancreatic ductal adenocarcinoma (PDAC) and polymeric scaffolds to develop 3D cancer models useful for mimicking the biology of this tumor. Three scaffold types based on two biocompatible polymeric formulations, such as poly(vinyl alcohol)/gelatin (PVA/G) mixture and poly(ethylene oxide terephthalate)/poly(butylene terephthalate) (PEOT/PBT) copolymer, were obtained via different techniques, namely, emulsion and freeze-drying, compression molding followed by salt leaching, and electrospinning. In this way, primary PDAC cells interfaced with different pore topographies, such as sponge-like pores of different shape and size or nanofiber interspaces. The aim of this study was to investigate the influence played by the scaffold architecture over cancerous cell growth and function. In all scaffolds, primary PDAC cells showed good viability and synthesized tumor-specific metalloproteinases (MMPs) such as MMP-2, and MMP-9. However, only sponge-like pores, obtained via emulsion-based and salt leaching-based techniques allowed for an organized cellular aggregation very similar to the native PDAC morphological structure. Differently, these cell clusters were not observed on PEOT/PBT electrospun scaffolds. MMP-2 and MMP-9, as active enzymes, resulted to be increased in PVA/G and PEOT/PBT sponges, respectively. These findings suggested that spongy scaffolds supported the generation of pancreatic tumor models with enhanced aggressiveness. In conclusion, primary PDAC cells showed diverse behaviors while interacting with different scaffold types that can be potentially exploited to create stage-specific pancreatic cancer models likely to provide new knowledge on the modulation and drug susceptibility of MMPs.

Innovative slow-release organic carbon-source material for groundwater in situ denitrification

Slow-release organic carbon-source (SOC) material, a new kind of electron donor for in situ groundwater denitrification, was prepared and evaluated in this study. With starch as a biologically utilized carbon source and polyvinyl alcohol (PVA) as a frame, this material performed controllable carbon release rates and demonstrated stable behaviour during the simulated denitrification process. Raman spectrum analysis showed that the PVA skeleton formed cross-linking network structures for hydrogen-bonded water molecules reset in low temperatures, and the starchy molecules filled in the interspace of the skeleton to form a two-phase interlocking/disperse phase structure. In a static system, carbon release processes followed the Fickian law with (1.294-6.560)×10(-3) mg g(-1) s(-1/2) as the release coefficient. Under domestication and in situ groundwater simulation conditions, SOC material played a favourable role during denitrification, with 1.049±0.165 as an average carbon-nitrogen ratio. The denitrification process followed the law of zero-order kinetics, while the dynamics parameter kN was 0.563-8.753 gN m(-3) d(-1). Generally, SOC material was suggested to be a potential carbon source (electron donor) suitable for in situ groundwater denitrification.

Embolization of symptomatic renal angiomyolipoma with a mixture of lipiodol and PVA, a mid-term result

OBJECTIVE

To evaluate the clinical effect of renal artery embolization with a mixture of lipiodol and polyvinyl alcohol (PVA) particles on symptomatic renal angiomyolipoma and to present the mid-term results from our single-center site.

METHODS

We performed a retrospective review of the seven patients who underwent embolization with a mixture of lipiodol and PVA particles to treat symptomatic renal angiomyolipoma in our center between February 2011 and December 2013. Medical records and follow-up results were reviewed and analyzed.

RESULTS

Seven patients underwent eight episodes of embolization using a mixture of lipiodol and PVA particles to treat symptomatic renal angiomyolipoma. One patient required a subsequent embolization of the right kidney 9 months after the initial embolization of the left kidney. No nephrectomy was required in any of these cases during follow-up. None had recurrence of tumor bleeding or rupture during follow-up. Decreased tumor size was achieved in six patients (85.7%) during the mid-term follow-up.

CONCLUSIONS

Embolization with a mixture of lipiodol and PVA particles is an effective and safe treatment for symptomatic renal angiomyolipoma. Based on the durable mid-term results of the present study, a mixture of lipiodol and PVA particles is recommended for embolization.
