Rust Prevention Property of a New Organic Inhibitor under Different Conditions

The corrosion resistance properties of a new type of environmentally-friendly organic inhibitor containing amino ketone molecules are presented in this paper. To evaluate the prevention effect of the inhibitor on corrosion of reinforcement, the electrochemical characteristics of steels in the simulated concrete pore solution (SPS) were investigated under varied conditions of the relevant parameters, including concentrations of the inhibitor and NaCl, pH value, and temperature. The inhibition efficiency of the material was characterized through electrochemical impedance spectroscopy (EIS), potentiodynamic polarization, and the weight loss of steels. The results reveal a significant improvement in the corrosion resistance of steels with the inhibitor. A maximum resistance value of 89.07% was achieved at an inhibitor concentration of 4%. Moreover, the new organic inhibitor exhibited good corrosion protection capability for steels under different NaCl concentrations. Its inhibition efficiency was determined to be 65.62, 80.06, and 66.30% at NaCl concentrations of 2, 3.5 and 5%, respectively. On the other hand, it was found that an alkaline environment was favorable for an enhanced corrosion prevention effect, and an optimal pH value of 11.3 was observed in this work. Besides, the inhibition efficiencies at different temperatures showed a trend of 25 > 35 > 40 > 20 > 30 °C, with a maximum value of 81.32% at 25 °C. The above results suggest that the new organic material has high potential to be used as an eco-friendly and long-term durable inhibitor for steel corrosion prevention under complex conditions.

Corrosion Resistance of Fe-Based Amorphous Films Prepared by the Radio Frequency Magnetron Sputter Method

Amorphous thin films can be applied to increase the anti-corrosion ability of critical components. Atomized FeCrNiMoCSiB powders were hot-pressed into a disc target for R. F. magnetron sputtering on a 316L substrate to upgrade its corrosion resistance. The XRD spectrum confirmed that the film deposited by R. F. magnetron sputtering was amorphous. The corrosion resistance of the amorphous film was evaluated in a 1 M HCl solution with potentiodynamic polarization tests, and the results were contrasted with those of a high-velocity oxy-fuel (HVOF) coating and 316L, IN 600, and C 276 alloys. The results indicated that the film hardness and elastic modulus, as measured using a nanoindenter, were 11.1 and 182 GPa, respectively. The principal stresses in two normal directions of the amorphous film were about 60 MPa and in tension. The corrosion resistance of the amorphous film was much greater than that of the other samples, which showed a broad passivation region, even in a 1 M HCl solution. Although the amorphous film showed high corrosion resistance, the original pinholes in the film were weak sites to initiate corrosion pits. After polarization tests, large, deep trenches were seen in the corroded 316L substrate; numerous fine patches in the IN 600 alloy and grain boundary corrosion in the C276 alloy were observed.

Comparative Study of Corrosion Behaviors of WC-NiMo and WC-Co Cemented Carbides

In this paper, the influence of a nickel binder metal and molybdenum carbide as an additional alloying element on the microstructure and corrosion behavior of WC-based cemented carbides, processed by conventional powder metallurgy, was studied, and a comparison with conventional cemented carbide (WC-Co) was carried out. The sintered alloys were characterized, before and after corrosive tests, by analyses using optical microscopy, scanning electron microscopy, energy dispersive X-ray spectroscopy, and X-ray diffraction. The corrosion resistance of the cemented carbides was investigated by open circuit potential, potentiodynamic polarization, and electrochemical impedance spectroscopy in a 3.5 wt.% NaCl solution. The WC-NiMo cemented carbides showed microstructures similar to those of WC-Co; however, pores and binder islands were observed in the microstructures. The corrosion tests showed promising results, the WC-NiMo cemented carbide showed superior corrosion resistance and higher passivation capacity than the WC-Co cemented carbide. The WC-NiMo alloy showed a higher EOC ≈-0.18 V vs. Ag|AgCl|KCl3mol/L than the WC-Co (EOC≈-0.45 V vs. Ag|AgCl|KCl3mol/L). The potentiodynamic polarization curves showed lower current density values throughout the potential range for the WC-NiMo alloy, and it was observed that E_corr was less negative (≈-0.416 V vs. Ag|AgCl|KCl3mol/L) than for WC-Co (≈-0.543 V vs. V vs. Ag|AgCl|KCl3mol/L). The EIS analysis confirmed low rate corrosion of WC-NiMo associated with the formation of a passive thin layer. This alloy showed a higher R_ct (1970.70 Ω).

The effect of serum proteins on the electrochemical behavior of CoNiCrMo

Numerous studies have examined the effect of serum and blood proteins on the general corrosion of metallic biomedical materials. However, it is unclear whether proteins have any effect in the case of CoCr alloys, particularly at physiological concentrations. In this work, potentiodynamic polarization and electrochemical impedance spectroscopy were used to investigate the electrochemical behavior of Co-35Ni-20Cr-10Mo in PBS, PBS with albumin at a concentration (36 g/L) representative of serum, and bovine serum. The corrosion current density (i_corr ) for the CoNiCrMo was changed little by the addition of serum-level albumin to PBS but it was more than halved in serum. Albumin and serum had little effect on the oxide thickness obtained using impedance spectroscopy, but they increased the effective resistance of the oxide consistent with the changes in i_corr . The potentiodynamic and impedance results indicate that the general corrosion behavior of the CoNiCrMo in serum is affected more by other proteins such as globulin rather than by albumin alone. Furthermore, the proteins in serum are beneficial with regard to the general corrosion behavior of the alloy, suggesting that the proteins act predominantly as inhibitors rather than as corrosion promoters that limit phosphate adsorption and associated inhibition.

TiSiCN as Coatings Resistant to Corrosion and Neutron Activation

The aim of the present paper was to evaluate the effect of neutron activation on TiSiCN carbonitrides coatings prepared at different C/N ratios (0.4 for under stoichiometric and 1.6 for over stoichiometric). The coatings were prepared by cathodic arc deposition using one cathode constructed of Ti88 at.%-Si12 at.% (99.99% purity). The coatings were comparatively examined for elemental and phase composition, morphology, and anticorrosive properties in 3.5% NaCl solution. All the coatings exhibited f.c.c. solid solution structures and had a (111) preferred orientation. Under stoichiometric structure, they proved to be resistant to corrosive attack in 3.5% NaCl and of these coatings the TiSiCN was found to have the best corrosion resistance. From all tested coatings, TiSiCN have proven to be the most suitable candidates for operation under severe conditions that are present in nuclear applications (high temperature, corrosion, etc.).

Corrosion Behavior of Sensitized AISI 304 Stainless Steel in Acid Chloride Solution

Corrosion resistance of sensitized austenitic stainless steel (SS) in chloride environments is currently the subject of numerous studies. Most of them are focused on neutral chloride solutions at room temperature and the experiments are carried out on ground stainless steels surfaces. This paper deals with the corrosion behavior of sensitized AISI 304 stainless steel in acid 1 M chloride solution (pH = 1.1) at the temperatures of 20 ± 3 °C and 50 °C. The specimens after sensitization are tested as covered by high-temperature surface oxides ("heat tinted"), and also after their chemical removal to assess the impact of the surface state on corrosion resistance. Potentiodynamic polarization (PP) and exposure immersion test are used as the independent corrosion tests. Microstructure before/after exposure immersion test is evaluated by optical microscopy (OM) and SEM. The results obtained showed that sensitization significantly conditions corrosion regardless of the removal of high-temperature oxides, and the elevated temperature mainly acts as its accelerating factor.

Electrochemical Studies of Stainless Steel and Stainless Steel-TiO2 Composite in Reference to Molten Aluminum Alloy Using a Solid-State BaCO3 Electrolyte

The influence of TiO₂ addition on the high-temperature electrochemical characteristics of stainless-steel-based materials was investigated by means of differential potential measurement, electrochemical polarization and impedance spectroscopy. A new three-electrode approach was utilized which incorporated a liquid aluminum alloy AlSi7Mg0.3 as the reference electrode, barium carbonate BaCO₃ as the solid-state electrolyte, and stainless steel or a stainless steel-TiO₂ composite as the working electrode. The potential differences between the steel-based working electrodes and the liquid-aluminum-alloy reference electrode were measured for 85 h throughout the whole experiment, including the heating and cooling period. The experiments were performed at 850 °C. The determination of the high-temperature open circuit potential (E_Corr) in reference to the liquid aluminum alloy was carried out via potentiodynamic polarization. The polarization-related changes in the impedance characteristics were evaluated by the correlation of impedance responses before and after the polarization. The addition of 40 vol% TiO₂ resulted in a reduction in the potential of the steel-TiO₂ composite and led to the formation of a more uniform electrode-electrolyte interface. The reaction products on the surface of the working electrodes were investigated by means of SEM/EDS and XRD. They consisted of mixed oxides within the Fe-O, Ba-Fe-O and Ba-Cr-O systems.

Effect of ECAP Route Type on the Microstructural Evolution, Crystallographic Texture, Electrochemical Behavior and Mechanical Properties of ZK30 Biodegradable Magnesium Alloy

In this study, billets of the ZK30 (Mg-3Zn-0.6 Zr-0.4 Mn, wt%) alloy were Equal Channel Angle Pressing (ECAP) processed for up to four passes of routes Bc (with rotating the sample 90° in the same direction between the subsequent passes), A (without sample rotation), and C (with sample rotating 180°) after each pass at a temperature of 250 °C and a ram speed of 10 mm/min using a die with an internal channel angle of 90°. The microstructural evolution and the crystallographic texture were investigated using a Scanning Electron Microscope (SEM) equipped with the Electron Back-Scatter Diffraction (EBSD) technique. Corrosion measurements were conducted in ringer lactate which is a simulated body fluid. The Vickers microhardness test and tensile tests were conducted for the alloy before and after processing. The as-annealed billets exhibited a bimodal structure as fine grains (more than 3.39 µm) coexisted with almost-equiaxed coarse grains (less than 76.73 µm); the average grain size was 26.69 µm. Further processing until four passes resulted in enhanced grain refinement and full Dynamic Recrystallization (DRX). ECAP processing through 4-Bc, 4-A, and 4-C exhibited significant reductions in grain size until they reached 1.94 µm, 2.89 µm, and 2.25 µm, respectively. Four-pass processing also resulted in the transformation of low-angle grain boundaries into high-angle grain boundaries. The previous conclusion was drawn from observing the simultaneous decrease in the fraction of low-angle grain boundaries and an increase in the fraction of high-angle grain boundaries. The pole figures revealed that 4-Bc, 4-A, and 4-C reduced the maximum texture intensity of the as-annealed billets. The potentiodynamic polarization findings revealed that route Bc is the most effective route in improving the corrosion rate, whereas the Electrochemical Impedance Spectroscopy (EIS) revealed that routes A and Bc improved the corrosion resistance with nearly identical values. Finally, 4-Bc resulted in the highest increase in Vickers hardness, yield stress, and ultimate tensile strength with values of 80.8%, 19.3%, and 44.5%, alongside a 31% improvement in ductility, all compared to the AA condition.

Influence of Ultrafine-Grained Microstructure and Texture Evolution of ECAPed ZK30 Magnesium Alloy on the Corrosion Behavior in Different Corrosive Agents

Magnesium-Zinc-Zirconium (Mg-Zn-Zr) alloys have caught considerable attention in medical applications where biodegradability is critical. The combination of their good biocompatibility, improved strength, and low cytotoxicity makes them great candidates for medical implants. This research investigation is focused on providing further insight into the effects of equal channel angular processing (ECAP) on the corrosion behavior, microstructure evolution, and mechanical properties of a biodegradable ZK30 alloy. Billets of Mg-3Zn-0.6 Zr (ZK30) alloy were processed through ECAP up to 4 passes of route Bc (rotating the billets 90° in the same direction between the subsequent passes) at 250 °C. Electron back-scatter diffraction (EBSD) was utilized to investigate the microstructural evolution as well as the crystallographic texture. Several electrochemical measurements were carried out on both a simulated body fluid and a 3.5% sodium chloride (NaCl) solution. Mechanical properties such as Vicker's hardness and tensile properties were also assessed. The as-annealed (AA) microstructure was dominated by equiaxed coarse recrystallized grains with an average grain size of 26.69 µm. After processing, a geometric grain subdivision took place due to the severe plastic deformation. Processed samples were characterized by grain refinement and high density of substructures. The 4-passes sample experienced a reduction in the grain size by 92.8% compared with its AA counterpart. The fraction of high-angle grain boundaries increased significantly after 4-passes compared to the 1-pass processed sample. With regards to the crystallographic texture, the AA condition had its {0001} basal planes mostly oriented parallel to the transversal direction. On the other hand, ECAP processing resulted in crystallographic texture changes, such as the shifting of the ZK30 shear plane to be aligned at 45° relative to the extrusion direction (ED). Furthermore, the maximum texture intensity was reduced from 14 times random (AA billets) to 8 times random after ECAP processing through 4-passes. The corrosion rate of the 4-passes sample was tremendously reduced by 99% and 45.25% compared with its AA counterpart in the simulated body fluid and the NaCl solution, respectively. The pitting corrosion resistance of ZK30 showed notable improvements in the simulated body fluid by 471.66% and 352% during processing through 1-pass and 4-passes, respectively, compared with the 3.5% NaCl findings. Finally, significant improvements in the tensile strength, hardness, and ductility were also achieved.

Plasma Electrolytic Polishing-An Ecological Way for Increased Corrosion Resistance in Austenitic Stainless Steels

Plasma electrolytic polishing (PEP) is an environment-friendly alternative to the conventional electrochemical polishing (EP), giving optimal surface properties and improved corrosion resistance with minimum energy and time consumption, which leads to both economic and environmental benefits. This paper is focused on the corrosion behavior of PEP treated AISI 316L stainless steel widely used as a biomaterial. Corrosion resistance of plasma electrolytic polished surfaces without/with chemical pretreatment (acid cleaning) is evaluated and compared with original non-treated (as received) surfaces by three independent test methods: electrochemical impedance spectroscopy (EIS), potentiodynamic polarization (PP), and exposure immersion test. All corrosion tests are carried out in the 0.9 wt.% NaCl solution at a temperature of 37 ± 0.5 °C to simulate the internal environment of a human body. The quality of tested surfaces is also characterized by optical microscopy and by the surface roughness parameters. The results obtained indicated high corrosion resistance of PEP treated surfaces also without chemical pretreatment, which increases the ecological benefits of PEP technology.

Electrochemical Behavior of SiC-Coated AA2014 Alloy through Plasma Electrolytic Oxidation

In this study, the corrosion performance of AA2014 aluminum alloy was enhanced by coating the alloy with a layer containing silica (SiC) that was formed by the plasma electrolytic oxidation (PEO) process. The PEO process was performed with different electrical parameters (frequency, current mode, and duty ratio) and both with and without SiC to investigate the microstructural and electrochemical differences in the coated samples produced from the process. The microstructure and composition of the PEO coatings were studied using X-ray diffraction (XRD) and scanning electron microscopy (SEM) with energy dispersive spectroscopy (EDS). A potentiodynamic polarization test and electrochemical impedance spectroscopy (EIS) were used to investigate the electrochemical behavior of the AA2014-PEO-coated samples. The potentiodynamic polarization showed that the SiC-PEO-coated samples had a significantly decreased corrosion rate (99.8%) compared with the uncoated AA2014 Al alloy. Our results showed that the coats containing SiC possessed a much higher corrosion resistance than both the uncoated AA2014 Al alloy (8,344,673%) and the SiC-free coatings, which possess low corrosion resistance, because of their higher chemical stability and more compact microstructure.

Anti-Corrosion Mechanism of Parsley Extract and Synergistic Iodide as Novel Corrosion Inhibitors for Carbon Steel-Q235 in Acidic Medium by Electrochemical, XPS and DFT Methods

The parsley extract (PLE) was prepared using absolute ethyl alcohol. The PLE and synergistic iodide were firstly utilized as efficacious corrosion inhibitors to slow down the corrosion rate of carbon steel-Q235 in 0.5 mol/L H₂SO₄ solution. The anti-corrosion performance was researched by weight loss method, electrochemical tests, surface analysis and quantum chemistry calculation. Results of electrochemical and weight loss tests show that the synergetic PLE and I⁻ exhibit the optimal corrosion inhibition efficiency 99%. The combined inhibitor displays the favorable long-term corrosion inhibition effect, and the inhibition efficiency can maintain more than 90% after 144 h immersion. The introduction of I⁻ makes carbon steel surface with higher negative charge amount, which could be beneficial to the interaction between corrosion inhibitor and Fe atoms. The adsorption behavior obeys the Langmuir isotherm adsorption, and involves chemical and physical adsorption. On the basis of electrochemical consequences and theoretical calculation, the adsorption process and anti-corrosion mechanisms are further explored.

The Microstructure Evolution and Electrochemical Corrosion Behavior of 7A46 Aluminum Alloy in Different Quenching Conditions

The quenching condition of aluminum alloy can affect the mechanical property and corrosion resistance of the profile. This paper is aimed at the low quench sensitivity of aluminum alloys. Scanning electron microscopy and transmission electron microscopy were used to analyze precipitate behaviors of the 7A46 aluminum alloy under different isothermal cooling conditions and microstructure evolutions of quench-induced precipitations. The effect of the different isothermal time on the corrosion resistance of the alloy, and the relationship between microstructure and corrosion resistance after quenching were revealed through electrochemical impedance spectroscopy and potentiodynamic polarization tests. Results show that corrosion sensitivity of the quenching-aged alloy is much higher than that of the double-aged (DA) alloy, and the corrosion resistance of the quenched alloy decreases firstly and then increases. Due to the high density of the matrix precipitates, the increased content of the impurity element, the discontinuity of the grain boundary precipitates and the widening of the precipitates free zone, the most serious degree of corrosion performance among the quenched alloys is 295 °C at 800 s, and the self-corrosion potential and self-current density is −0.919 V and 2.371 μA/cm², respectively.

Corrosion Resistance of AISI 316L Stainless Steel Biomaterial after Plasma Immersion Ion Implantation of Nitrogen

Plasma immersion ion implantation (PIII) of nitrogen is low-temperature surface technology which enables the improvement of tribological properties without a deterioration of the corrosion behavior of austenitic stainless steels. In this paper the corrosion properties of PIII-treated AISI 316L stainless steel surfaces are evaluated by electrochemical impedance spectroscopy (EIS), potentiodynamic polarization (PP) and exposure immersion tests (all carried out in the 0.9 wt. % NaCl solution at 37 ± 0.5 °C) and compared with a non-treated surface. Results of the three performed independent corrosion tests consistently confirmed a significant increase in the corrosion resistance after two doses of PIII nitriding.

Conifer Cone (Pinus resinosa) as a Green Corrosion Inhibitor for Steel Rebar in Chloride-Contaminated Synthetic Concrete Pore Solutions

The present study has been focused on the environment-friendly corrosion inhibitor. Conifer cone (Pinus resinosa) has been used as a novel corrosion inhibitor to mitigate the corrosion of steel rebars in simulated concrete pore solutions (SCPS) in the presence and absence of chloride ions. The corrosion inhibitor is extracted by simple chemical methods. The functional groups present in the extracted conifer cone (ECC) powder are characterized as well as the surface morphology of ECC has been examined. The corrosion inhibition performance has been evaluated by the electrochemical and weight loss methods. The experimental results indicate that ECC possesses a corrosion inhibition efficiency of 81.2% at a dosage of 1000 mg·L^-1, after 720 h of immersion in chloride-contaminated SCPS. Adsorption isotherm and their standard Gibbs free energy (ΔG_ads⁰) values are calculated by Langmuir, Freundlich, and Temkin isotherm methods, and the results indicate that the ECC is initially adsorbed on the steel rebar surface by physisorption and then it turns to chemisorption. The steel rebar surfaces have been characterized after exposure to the ECC containing SCPS, and the results indicate that the ECC containing cationic adsorbate molecules, which interact with steel rebar, leads to retardation of metal dissolution in corrosive chloride medium.

Scalable Corrosion-Resistant Coatings for Thermal Applications

Corrosion of metallic substrates is a problem for a variety of applications. Corrosion can be mitigated with the use of an electrically insulating coating protecting the substrate. Thick millimetric coatings, such as paints, are generally more corrosion-resistant when compared to nanoscale coatings. However, for thermal systems, thick coatings are undesirable due to the resulting decrease in the overall heat transfer stemming from the added coating thermal resistance. Hence, the development of ultrathin (<10 μm) coatings is of great interest. Ultrathin inorganic silicon dioxide (SiO₂) coatings applied by sol-gel chemistries or chemical vapor deposition, as well as organic coatings such as Parylene C, have great anticorrosion performance due to their high dielectric breakdown and low moisture permeability. However, their application to arbitrarily shaped metals is difficult or expensive. Here, we develop a sol-gel solution capable of facile and controllable dip coating on arbitrary metals, resulting in a very smooth (<5 nm roughness), thin (∼3 μm), and conformal coating of dense SiO₂. To benchmark our material, we compared the corrosion performance with in-house synthesized superhydrophobic aluminum and copper samples, Parylene C-coated substrates, and smooth hydrophobic surfaces functionalized with a hydrophobic self-assembled monolayer. For comparison with state-of-the-art commercial coatings, copper substrates were coated with an organo-ceramic SiO₂ layer created by an elevated temperature and atmospheric pressure metal organic chemical vapor deposition process. To characterize corrosion performance, we electrochemically investigated the corrosion resistance of all samples through potentiodynamic polarization studies and electrochemical impedance spectroscopy. To benchmark the coating durability and to demonstrate scalability, we tested internally coated copper tubes in a custom-built corrosion flow loop to simulate realistic working conditions with shear and particulate saltwater flow. The sol-gel and Parylene C coatings demonstrated a 95% decrease in corrosion rate during electrochemical tests. Copper tube weight loss was reduced by 75% for the sol-gel SiO₂-coated tubes when seawater was used as the corrosive fluid in the test loop. This work not only demonstrates scalable coating methodologies for applying ultrathin anticorrosion coatings but also develops mechanistic understanding of corrosion mechanisms on a variety of functional surfaces and substrates.

Corrosion Behaviour of 316L Stainless Steel in CNTs-Water Nanofluid: Effect of Temperature

The inhibition behavior of carbon nanotubes (CNTs) and Gum Arabic (GA) on the corrosion of 316L stainless steel in CNTs–water nanofluid under the effect of different temperatures was investigated by electrochemical methods and surface analysis techniques. Thereby, 316L stainless steel samples were exposed to CNTs–water nanofluid under temperatures of 22, 40, 60 and 80 °C. Two concentrations of the CNTs (0.1 and 1.0 wt.% CNTs) were homogenously dispersed in deionized water using the surfactant GA and tested using three corrosion tests conducted in series: open circuit test, polarization resistance test, and potentiodynamic scans. These tests were also conducted on the same steel but in solutions of GA-deionized water only. Tests revealed that corrosion increases with temperature and concentration of the CNTs–water nanofluids, having the highest corrosion rate of 32.66 milli-mpy (milli-mil per year) for the 1.0 wt.% CNT nanofluid at 80 °C. In addition, SEM observations showed pits formation around areas of accumulated CNTs that added extra roughness to the steel sample. The activation energy analysis and optical surface observations have revealed that CNTs can desorb at higher temperatures, which makes the surface more vulnerable to corrosion attack.

Corrosion of High-Strength Steel Wires under Tensile Stress

The stress corrosion cracking is the central issue for high-strength wires under high tensile stress used in civil engineering. This paper explores the resistance of stress corrosion cracking of three typical steel wires of high-strength carbon through a laboratory test, combining the actions of tensile stress and corrosive solution. Besides, the impact of tensile stress and immersion time are also investigated. During the tests, the wires were subject to electrochemical measurements of potentiodynamic polarization and electrochemical impedance spectroscopy, and the microstructure analysis was performed on the fractured cross sections. The obtained results show the following: the high-strength wire, conforming to GB/T 5224, has higher resistance to the combined actions of tensile stress and corrosive solution; tensile stress of 70% fracture strength and longer loading-immersion time make the film of corrosion products on steel surface unstable and weaken the corrosion resistance; the surface film consisted of the iron oxide film and the corrosion products film whose components are mainly iron thiocyanate and iron sulphide.

Effect of Post Weld Heat Treatment on the Microstructure and Electrochemical Characteristics of Dissimilar Material Welded by Butter Method

In the present study, the effect of post weld heat treatment (PWHT) on the microstructure and corrosion kinetics of butter welded Nickel Alloy 617 and 12Cr steel was investigated. Buttering was carried out on the 12Cr side with the Thyssen 617 filler metal. Furthermore, post weld heat treatment (PWHT) was conducted at 730 °C with a holding time of 4 h followed by furnace cooling. Optical Microscopy (OM) was conducted to study the microstructural evolution in dissimilar material welding as a result of PWHT. Moreover, Scanning Electron Microscopy with energy dispersive spectroscopy (SEM-EDS) was employed to determine the elemental concentrations in all important regions of the butter weld before and after the PWHT. In addition, the effect of PWHT on the corrosion kinetics of the butter weld was also investigated by potentiodynamic polarization measurements in 5 wt.% NaCl + 0.5 wt.% CH₃COOH electrolyte at room temperature, 30 °C, 50 °C and 70 °C. The corrosion activation parameters were also determined for both the samples by using Arrhenius plots. The results revealed the higher susceptibility of corrosion of the butter weld after PWHT, which was attributed to the reduced Cr content in the heat affected zone of the 12Cr region due to the sensitization effect of the heat treatment, resulting in higher corrosion rates.

Mechanical and Corrosion Properties of Laser Surface-Treated Ti13Nb13Zr Alloy with MWCNTs Coatings

Titanium and its alloys is the main group of materials used in prosthetics and implantology. Despite their popularity and many advantages associated with their biocompatibility, these materials have a few significant disadvantages. These include low biologic activity—which reduces the growth of fibrous tissue and allows loosening of the prosthesis—the possibility of metallosis and related inflammation or other allergic reactions, as well as abrasion of the material during operation. Searching for the best combinations of material properties for implants in today′s world is not only associated with research on new alloys, but primarily with the modification of their surface layers. The proposed laser modification of the Ti13Nb13Zr alloy with a carbon nanotube coating is aimed at eliminating most of the problems mentioned above. The carbon coating was carried out by electrophoretic deposition (EPD) onto ground and etched substrates. This form of carbon was used due to the confirmed biocompatibility with the human body and the ability to create titanium carbides after laser treatment. The EPD-deposited carbon nanotube coating was subjected to laser treatment. Due to high power densities applied to the material during laser treatment, non-equilibrium structures were observed while improving mechanical and anti-corrosive properties. An electrophoretically deposited coating of carbon nanotubes further improved the effects of laser processing through greater strengthening, hardness or Young′s modulus similar to that required, as well as led to an increase in corrosion resistance. The advantage of the presented laser modification of the Ti13Nb13Zr alloy with a carbon coating is the lack of surface cracks, which are difficult to eliminate with traditional laser treatment of Ti alloys. All samples tested showed contact angles between 46° and 82° and thus, based on the literature reports, they have hydrophilic surfaces suitable for cell adhesion.

Ammonium Phosphate as Inhibitor to Mitigate the Corrosion of Steel Rebar in Chloride Contaminated Concrete Pore Solution

In the present study, different amounts, i.e., 1-3 v/v% of 1 M ammonium phosphate monobasic, were used as an eco-friendly corrosion inhibitor to mitigate the corrosion of steel rebar exposed to simulated concrete pore (SCP) + 3.5 wt% NaCl solution at a prolonged duration. Potentiodynamic polarization results show that as the amount of inhibitor is increased, the corrosion resistance of steel rebar is increased. The steel rebar exposed to 3% inhibitor-containing SCP + 3.5 wt% NaCl solution exhibited nobler corrosion potential (Ecorr), the lowest corrosion current density (icorr), and 97.62% corrosion inhibition efficiency after 1 h of exposure. The steel rebars exposed to 3% inhibitor-containing SCP + 3.5 wt% NaCl solution revealed higher polarization resistance (Rp) and film resistance (Ro) with exposure periods compared to other samples owing to the formation of passive film. The scanning electron microscopy (SEM) of steel rebar exposed to 3% inhibitor-containing SCP + 3.5 wt% NaCl solution showed homogenous and uniform dendritic passive film which covers all over the surface, whereas, bare, i.e., SCP + 3.5 wt% NaCl solution exposed samples exhibited pitting and irregular morphology. Raman spectroscopy results confirm the formation of goethite (α-FeOOH), maghemite (γ-Fe2O3), and iron phosphate (FePO4) as a passive film onto the steel rebar surface exposed to 3% inhibitor-containing SCP + 3.5 wt% NaCl solution. These phases are responsible for the corrosion mitigation of steel rebar which are very protective, adherent, and sparingly soluble.

Dissolution of Metals in Different Bromide-Based Systems: Electrochemical Measurements and Spectroscopic Investigations

The dissolution of the main metals (Cu, Zn, Sn, Pb and Fe) found in waste printed circuit boards (WPCBs) was investigated by electrochemical corrosion measurements (potentiodynamic polarization and electrochemical impedance spectroscopy (EIS)) in different bromide-based systems that could be used as lixiviants in hydrometallurgical route of metals recovery. The analysis of the corrosion products was carried out by X-ray diffraction (XRD) and X-ray photoelectron spectroscopy (XPS) measurements. All measurements showed that the addition of bromine in the electrolyte favors to great extents the dissolution process of all studied metals as compared to bromine-free electrolytes. In the investigated experimental conditions, the highest dissolution rates of the metals were obtained in acidic KBr solution containing 0.01 mol/L bromine and they decreased in the following order: Zn >> Sn > Pb > Fe > Cu. The XRD and XPS chemical assessment allowed the identification of the dissolution products formed on the metallic surfaces after exposure to the electrolytes. They consisted mainly of oxides in the case of Cu, Zn, Sn and Fe, while the presence of PbBr₂ was also noticed on the lead surface. Based on the results of EIS and surface investigations, several models explaining the corrosion behavior of the metals were proposed and discussed. The obtained results demonstrate that all studied metals could be successfully leached using brominated solutions, providing a viable alternative for the selective and efficient recovery of the base metals from WPCBs through a multi-step hydrometallurgical processing route.

Influence of Ethanol on Pitting Corrosion Behavior of Stainless Steel for Bioethanol Fermentation Tanks

The role of ethanol (C₂H₅OH) in pitting corrosion behavior of AISI 316L austenitic stainless steel was investigated in aqueous ethanolic solution with chloride. The pitting susceptibility and surface morphology of 316L in a series of ethanol-containing solutions were examined using X-ray photoelectron spectroscopy (XPS), optical microscopy with 3D stitching, immersion tests, and potentiodynamic polarization measurements. Results demonstrated that the ethanol concentration impacted little on the passive film stability while it dramatically influenced the pitting corrosion susceptibility. Corrosion rate of 316L after immersion tests first increased and then decreased as the concentration of ethanol increased from 0 to 10 M in ferric chloride solution. This, however, did not correspond to the breakdown potential which directly decreased from 489 to 249 mV as the water concentration decreased in ethanolic NaCl solutions. The pits density after both immersion and electrochemical tests showed that the initiation of pitting in ethanolic solution tended to occur at multiple points at the same time. The synergy effect on pitting behavior of hydrolysis enhancement and solubility reduction of metal cations due to the introduction of ethanol has also been discussed.

Electrochemical Behaviour of Ti/Al2O3/Ni Nanocomposite Material in Artificial Physiological Solution: Prospects for Biomedical Application

Inorganic-based nanoelements such as nanoparticles (nanodots), nanopillars and nanowires, which have at least one dimension of 100 nm or less, have been extensively developed for biomedical applications. Furthermore, their properties can be varied by controlling such parameters as element shape, size, surface functionalization, and mutual interactions. In this study, Ni-alumina nanocomposite material was synthesized by the dc-Ni electrodeposition into a porous anodic alumina template (PAAT). The structural, morphological, and corrosion properties were studied using x-ray diffraction (XRD), scanning electron microscopy (SEM), atomic force microscopy (AFM), and electrochemical techniques (linear sweep voltammetry). Template technology was used to obtain Ni nanopillars (NiNPs) in the PAAT nanocomposite. Low corrosion current densities (order of 0.5 µA/cm2) were indicators of this nanocomposite adequate corrosion resistance in artificial physiological solution (0.9% NaCl). A porous anodic alumina template is barely exposed to corrosion and performs protective functions in the composite. The results may be useful for the development of new nanocomposite materials technologies for a variety of biomedical applications including catalysis and nanoelectrodes for sensing and fuel cells. They are also applicable for various therapeutic purposes including targeting, diagnosis, magnetic hyperthermia, and drug delivery. Therefore, it is an ambitious task to research the corrosion resistance of these magnetic nanostructures in simulated body fluid.

Optimal Blending of PbSe and CdSe in Polycrystalline PbCdSe Nanocomposite Film: Improved Carrier Multiplication and Enhanced Photoconversion Efficiency

The present work reports galvanostatic electro-co-deposition of n-PbCdSe semiconductor (SC) films on FTO substrate from the respective precursors. Self-designed matrices were formulated at variable concentrations of Pb²⁺ in the deposition medium. The semiconductor films constitute an intermixed structure of close-packed PbSe and CdSe nanoparticles (NPs), and the band gap (E_g) was effectively tuned in the range 0.99-1.47 eV for the variable compositions. Energy dispersive spectroscopy studies revealed that Cd exists in low level in the film matrix compared to Pb, presumably due to competitive deposition kinetics of the two chalcogenide compounds and the crystallite sizes determined from XRD studies, ranges between 15 and 12 nm, which corresponds to the size quenching of SC-NPs with increased Pb²⁺ concentration. The durability studies identify the most stable film developed at 0.025 M Pb²⁺ concentration. PbSe materials are typically characterized with impact ionization which effectively induces carrier multiplication (CM) in the quasi Type-II PbCdSe composite, exhibiting reasonably high photoconversion efficiency (PCE) of 6.14% with current output of 19.2 mA cm^-2 for the optimal PbCdSe film.

Manufacturing of Mg-Ti Couples at Different Heat Treatment Temperatures and Their Corrosion Behavior in Chloride Solutions

In this study, rods of magnesium alloy and titanium alloy were cut to have similar height of about 5mm and size of 10 mm × 10 mm to fabricate three Mg-Ti couples. The Mg-Ti couple was heat treated at 540 °C, 570 °C, and 600 °C. The corrosion of these couples have been investigated and compared with AZ31 alloy. Potentiodynamic polarization and electrochemical impedance spectroscopy measurements were employed to study the corrosion behavior after 1.0 h and 48 h exposure to 3.5% NaCl solutions. The morphology of surfaces was examined by scanning electron microscopy (SEM) and the profile analysis was collected using an energy dispersive X-ray (EDX) analyzer after 5 days immersion in the chloride solutions. It is found that coupling Mg with Ti reduces the corrosion of AZ31 alloy, which further decreased with the increase of the temperature of treatment. Prolonging the time of exposure from 1.0 h to 48 h remarkably decreased the corrosion of the couples as well.

Corrosion Characteristics of Copper-Added Austempered Gray Cast Iron (AGCI)

The aim of this investigation was to assess the corrosion behavior of gray cast iron (GCI) alloyed with copper. Alloyed GCI specimens were austempered isothermally at varying temperatures. After austenitizing at 927 °C, the samples were austempered at different temperatures ranging from 260 to 385 °C with an interval of 25 °C for 60 min. As a result, these samples developed an ausferrite matrix with different percentages of austenite. The resulting microstructures were evaluated and characterized by optical microscope (OM), scanning electron microscope (SEM), and X-ray diffraction (XRD). The corrosion characteristics were determined using potentiodynamic polarization tests and electrochemical impedance spectroscopy (EIS) of these samples. These tests were carried out in a medium of 0.5 M H₂SO₄ and 3.5% NaCl solution. It was observed from the potentiodynamic polarization results that with increasing austempering temperature, the corrosion rate decreased. All results of the EIS were in accordance with a constant phase element (CPE) model. It was found that with an increase in austempering temperature, the polarization resistance (R_p) increased. The austenite content was also found to influence the corrosion behavior of the austempered gray cast iron (AGCI).

Corrosion Resistance of Aluminum against Acid Activation: Impact of Benzothiazole-Substituted Gallium Phthalocyanine

This study describes the adsorption behavior of organic inhibitors at the aluminum-HCl solution interface and their corrosion inhibition performance. The organic inhibitors employed are: 4-(benzo [d]thiazol-2ylthio)phthalonitrile (BTThio) and tetrakis[(benzo[d]thiazol-2-yl-thio)phthalo- cyaninato]gallium(III) chloride (ClGaBTThioPc). The corrosion behavior of these inhibitors is investigated using electrochemical and computational techniques. Open circuit potential results reveal predominant cathodic character for the mechanism of aluminum corrosion inhibition by the inhibitors. Inhibition efficiency values from potentiodynamic polarization measurements increase from 46.9 to 70.8% for BTThio and 59.7 to 81.0% for ClGaBTThioPc within the concentration range of 2 to 10 μM. Scanning electron microscopy (SEM) measurements reveal protection of the metal surface from acid attack, in the presence of the inhibitors and energy dispersive X-ray (EDX) measurements show that the most probable way by which the inhibitors protect the metal surface would be by shielding it from the corrosion attacks of Cl⁻ from the acid. Quantum chemical parameters corroborate well with experimental findings.

Effect of DC Plasma Electrolytic Oxidation on Surface Characteristics and Corrosion Resistance of Zirconium

Zr is a valve metal, the biocompatibility of which is at least on par with Ti. Recently, numerous attempts of the formation of bioactive coatings on Zr by plasma electrolytic oxidation (PEO) in solutions that were based on calcium acetate and calcium β-glycerophosphate were made. In this study, the direct current (DC) PEO of commercially pure zirconium in the solutions that contained Ca(H₂PO₂)₂, Ca(HCOO)₂, and Mg(CH₃COO)₂ was investigated. The treatment was conducted at 75 mA/cm² up to 200, 300, or 400 V. Five process stages were discerned. The treatment at higher voltages resulted in the formation of oxide layers that had Ca/P or (Mg+Ca)/P ratios that were close to that of hydroxyapatite (Ca/P = 1.67), determined by SEM/EDX. The corrosion resistance studies were performed using electrochemical impedance spectroscopy (EIS) and DC polarization methods. R(Q[R(QR)]) circuit model was used to fit the EIS data. In general, the coatings that were obtained at 200 V were the most corrosion resistant, however, they lacked the porous structure, which is typical for PEO coatings, and is sought after in the biomedical applications. The treatment at 400 V resulted in the formation of the coatings that were more corrosion resistant than those that were obtained at 300 V. This was determined mainly by the prevailing plasma regime at the given process voltage. The pitting resistance of Zr was also improved by the treatment, regardless of the applied process conditions.

Electrochemical Impedance and Polarization Corrosion Studies of Tantalum Surface Modified by DC Plasma Electrolytic Oxidation

Tantalum has recently become an actively researched biomaterial for the bone reconstruction applications because of its excellent corrosion resistance and successful clinical records. However, a bare Ta surface is not capable of directly bonding to the bone upon implantation and requires some method of bioactivation. In this study, this was realized by direct current (DC) plasma electrolytic oxidation (PEO). Susceptibility to corrosion is a major factor determining the service-life of an implant. Therefore, herein, the corrosion resistance of the PEO coatings on Ta was investigated in Ringer’s solution. The coatings were formed by galvanostatic anodization up to 200, 300 and 400 V, after which the treatment was conducted potentiostatically until the total process time amounted to 5 min. Three solutions containing Ca(H₂PO₂)₂, Ca(HCOO)₂ and Mg(CH₃COO)₂ were used in the treatment. For the corrosion characterization, electrochemical impedance spectroscopy and potentiodynamic polarization techniques were chosen. The coatings showed the best corrosion resistance at voltages low enough so that the intensive sparking was absent, which resulted in the formation of thin films. The impedance data were fitted to the equivalent electrical circuits with two time constants, namely R(Q[R(QR)]) and R(Q[R(Q[RW])]). The inclusion of W in the circuit helped to fit the low-frequency part of the samples PEO-ed at 400 V, hinting at the important role of diffusion in the corrosion resistance of the PEO coatings described in the research.

Effect of Elemental Sulfur and Sulfide on the Corrosion Behavior of Cr-Mo Low Alloy Steel for Tubing and Tubular Components in Oil and Gas Industry

The chemical degradation of alloy components in sulfur-containing environments is a major concern in oil and gas production. This paper discusses the effect of elemental sulfur and its simplest anion, sulfide, on the corrosion of Cr-Mo alloy steel at pH 2 and 5 during 10, 20 and 30 h immersion in two different solutions. 4130 Cr-Mo alloy steel is widely used as tubing and tubular components in sour services. According to the previous research in aqueous conditions, contact of solid sulfur with alloy steel can initiate catastrophic corrosion problems. The corrosion behavior was monitored by the potentiodynamic polarization technique during the experiments. Energy dispersive X-ray spectroscopy (EDS) and scanning electron microscopy (SEM) have been applied to characterize the corrosion product layers after each experiment. The results show that under the same experimental conditions, the corrosion resistance of Cr-Mo alloy in the presence of elemental sulfur is significantly lower than its resistance in the presence of sulfide ions.

Electrochemical study on the corrosion resistance of plasma nanocoated 316L stainless steel in albumin- and lysozyme-containing electrolytes

The physiological corrosion resistance of plasma nanocoated 316L stainless steel was studied in protein-containing electrolytes using electrochemical methods. Plasma nanocoatings with thicknesses of 20-30 nm were deposited onto 316L stainless steel coupons in a glow discharge of trimethylsilane (TMS) or its mixture with oxygen gas under various gas ratios. The surface chemistries of the plasma nanocoatings were characterized using Fourier transform infrared spectroscopy (FTIR) and X-ray photoelectron spectroscopy (XPS). Corrosion properties of the plasma nanocoated 316L stainless steel coupons were assessed using potentiodynamic polarization, cyclic voltammetry (CV), and electrochemical impedance spectroscopy (EIS) in phosphate-buffered saline (PBS) electrolytes that contain bovine serum albumin (BSA) or lysozyme. It was found that BSA adsorption on the plasma nanocoated 316L coupons was heavily favored. BSA adsorption on the plasma nanocoating surfaces could block charge-transfer reactions between the electrolyte and 316L substrate, and thus stabilize the 316L substrates from further corrosion. In contrast, lysozyme adsorption on the plasma nanocoated specimens was not as pronounced and mildly influenced the corrosion properties of the plasma nanocoated 316L stainless steel.

Design of Boiler Welding for Improvement of Lifetime and Cost Control

Fe-2.25Cr-1Mo a widely used material for headers and steam tubes of boilers. Welding of steam tube to header is required for production of boiler. Heat affected zone of the weld can have poor mechanical properties and poor corrosion behavior leading to weld failure. The cost of material used for steam tube and header of boiler should be controlled. This study propose a new materials design for boiler welding to improve the lifetime and cost control, using tungsten inert gas (TIG) welding of Fe-2.25Cr-1Mo tube to carbon steel pipe with chromium-containing filler. The cost of production could be reduced by the use of low cost material such as carbon steel pipe for boiler header. The effect of chromium content on corrosion behavior of the weld was greater than that of the microstructure. The lifetime of the welded boiler can be increased by improvement of mechanical properties and corrosion behavior of the heat affected zone.
