Abstract
Dry and wet methods were used to digest Phellodendron grown in Jinxiu Dayaoshan of Guangxi with a high-pressure jar and to prepare the samples. The contents of microelements Cu, Fe, Zn, Mn and Ni and macroelements K, Ca, Mg, Sr and Na in Phellodendron were determined by using ICP-AES. Meanwhile, the optimal digestion conditions were found: 7 mL of HNO3 +HClO4 +H2O2 (volume ratio 5 : 1 : 1) for 4 h. The work condition and the optical wavelength were selected. The RSD was found to be less than 5% and the recovery rates of all elements were within the range of 89.4%-113.1%. The determined results agree with the analytical demand, and also indicate that Phellodendron contains high contents of Cu, Fe, Zn and Mn microelements. It is important to assess the medicinal value and understand pharmacological action of Phellodendron by the determination of microelements in the Chinese medicine with ICP-AES.

Abstract
OBJECTIVE To determine the change pattern of alkaline and acid components of Dahuang and Huangbai amoung different combinations in Dahuang Xiaoshi decotion. METHOD The contents of anthraquinones and berberine were determined by HPLC in samples of Dahuang extracts, Huangbai extracts, Dahuang and Huangbai pair medicine extracts, and extracts of whole recipe. RESULT The contents of anthraquinones and berberine were decreased with the changes of combinations: from component medicinal material alone to pair medicines, and to whole recipe. the change pattern was more apparent in water decoctions than in ethanol extracts. CONCLUSION The contents of alkaline and acid components are changed with different extract methods and different combinations.

Abstract
OBJECTIVE To isolate and identify chemical constituents from Phellodendron chinense. METHODS Chemical constituents were isolated by silica gel and Sephadex LH-20 column chromatography. The structures of the isolated compounds were determined by spectral means. RESULTS Ten compounds were isolated and identified as berberine (1), caffeic acid ethyl ester (2), iso-vanillin (3), ferulic acid (4), (+/-)-5,5'-dimethoxylariciresinol (5), Methyl beta-orsellinate (6), gamma-fagirine (7), (+/-)-Lyoniresinol (8), beta-sitosterol (9), stigmasterine (10). CONCLUSIONS Compounds 2-6 are isolated and identified from this genus for the first time.

Abstract
Two new ferulate compounds, amurenlactone A (1) and amurenamide A (2), along with 11 known compounds have been isolated from the cortex of Phellodendron amurense. The structures of the new compounds were established based on 1D, 2D NMR and mass spectral analyzes. The known compounds were identified by comparison with authentic samples.

Abstract
In the present study, we investigate the effects of an extract isolated from traditional Chinese medicine Zi-Shen Pill (ZSPE) on benign prostatic hyperplasia (BPH) in rats induced by testosterone after castration. A total of 50 rats were equally divided into five groups: Group 1 served as control (sham-operated group); Group 2 was model group; Group 3 and Group 4 animals were administered with ZSPE at dose levels of 300 mg/kg and 600 mg/kg; Group 5 was served as positive control group and treated with finasteride at a dose of 1 mg/kg. The drugs were administered orally once a day for 28 days consecutively. The prostate weight, prostatic index, and serum dihydrotestosterone (DHT) levels were significantly reduced and the pathological changes in BPH were also by ameliorated ZSPE. Immunohistochemical examination revealed that the expressions of vascular endothelial growth factor (VEGF) and basic fibroblast growth factor (bFGF) in prostate were inhibited by ZSPE treatment, whereas the levels of transforming growth factor-beta1 (TGF-beta1) were increased. These results suggest that ZSPE has a definite inhibitory effect on BPH and might be an alternative medicine for treatment of human BPH.

Abstract
The study was aimed to investigate the effects and mechanism of action of Changtai granule (CT), a traditional compound Chinese medicinal formula, in rodent 2,4,6-trinitrobenzene sulfonic acid (TNBS) colitis. Rats with TNBS/ethanol-induced colitis were used. The colonic wet weight, myeloperoxidase (MPO) activity, macroscopic and histological colon injury was observed. Inflammation cytokines were determined by ELISA methods and semi-quantitative RT-PCR. When dosed orally once daily, CT markedly attenuated TNBS-induced colitis. CT significantly attenuated colonic wet weight, macroscopic and histological colon injury. CT decreased mucosal mRNA levels for several inflammatory mediators: inducible nitric oxide synthase, cyclooxygenase 2, and macrophage inflammatory protein 2. CT also decreased mucosal mRNA and protein levels of T effectors cytokines: tumor necrosis factor-alpha (TNF-alpha), interleukin-2 (IL-2) and interferon-gamma (IFN-gamma). Systemic levels of these cytokines were also dramatically attenuated. CD3/CD28-mediated costimulation of T helper 1 effector cytokines release in lamina propria mononuclear cells (LPMC) was markedly inhibited by CT ex vivo and in vitro. Also CT prevented cytokines production by nuclear factor-kappaB (NF-kappaB). The potential anti-inflammatory and immunomodulatory effect of CT in TNBS colitis suggests that CT may be an effective treatment approach for inflammatory bowel disease.

Abstract
OBJECTIVE To study refinement of macroporous resin to Huang-Lian-Jie-Du decoction. METHODS The content changes of berberine, geniposide and total alkaloid in the solution which went through the macroporous resin were determined by TLC or spectrophotometry. The type of resin, absorption and desorption condition were optimized. RESULTS YWD-09D macroporous resin was suitable for refinement of Huang-Lian-Jie-Du decoction. The absorptive capacity of the resin was 1: 1.3. The concentration of solution was 0.4 g/ml, pH 4 and current velocity was 2 ml/min. The ratio of diameter and high of the resin column was 1:20. The desorption solution was 90% alcohol of 4BV. CONCLUSION YWD-09D macroporous resin and its selected condition are suitable for refinement of Huang-Lian-Jie-Du decoction.

Abstract
Studies were undertaken to determine the adsorption behavior of alpha -cypermethrin [R)-alpha -cyano-3-phenoxybenzyl(1S)-cis-3-(2,2-dichlorovinyl)-2,2-dimethylcyclopropanecarboxylate, and (S)-alpha-cyano-3-phenoxybenzyl (1R)-cis-3-(2,2-dichlorovinyl)-2,2-dimethylcyclopropanecarboxylate] in solutions on granules of cork and activated carbon (GAC). The adsorption studies were carried out using a batch equilibrium technique. A gas chromatograph with an electron capture detector (GC-ECD) was used to analyze alpha -cypermethrin after solid phase extraction with C18 disks. Physical properties including real density, pore volume, surface area and pore diameter of cork were evaluated by mercury porosimetry. Characterization of cork particles showed variations thereby indicating the highly heterogeneous structure of the material. The average surface area of cork particles was lower than that of GAC. Kinetics adsorption studies allowed the determination of the equilibrium time - 24 hours for both cork (1-2 mm and 3-4 mm) and GAC. For the studied alpha -cypermethrin concentration range, GAC revealed to be a better sorbent. However, adsorption parameters for equilibrium concentrations, obtained through the Langmuir and Freundlich models, showed that granulated cork 1-2 mm have the maximum amount of adsorbed alpha-cypermethrin (q(m)) (303 microg/g); followed by GAC (186 microg/g) and cork 3-4 mm (136 microg/g). The standard deviation (SD) values, demonstrate that Freundlich model better describes the alpha -cypermethrin adsorption phenomena on GAC, while alpha -cypermethrin adsorption on cork (1-2 mm and 3-4 mm) is better described by the Langmuir. In view of the adsorption results obtained in this study it appears that granulated cork may be a better and a cheaper alternative to GAC for removing alpha -cypermethrin from water.

Abstract
Polygonum cuspidatum water extract (PCWE) was shown to be a potent inhibitor of lipopolysaccharide (LPS)-induced expression of inducible nitric oxide synthase (iNOS) and cyclooxygenase-2 (COX-2). PCWE was compared to baicalin isolated from Scutellaria baicalensis Georgi and berberine of Coptidis rhizoma and Phellodendri cortex, for their effects on LPS-induced nitric oxide (NO) production and iNOS and COX-2 gene expressions in RAW 264.7 macrophages. Both PCWE and the compounds inhibited LPS-induced NO production in a concentration-dependent manner without a cytotoxicity. The decrease in NO production was in parallel with the inhibition of LPS-induced iNOS gene expression by PCWE and the compounds. In contrast, iNOS enzyme activity was not inhibited by PCWE and two agents. In addition, only PCWE inhibited LPS-induced prostaglandin E2 (PGE2) production and COX-2 gene expression without affecting COX-2 enzyme activity, while baicalin or berberine did not. Furthermore, N-nitro-L-arginine (NLA) and N-nitro-L-arginine methyl ester (L-NAME) pretreatment enhanced LPS-induced iNOS protein expression, which was inhibited by these PCWE and two agents, although LPS-induced COX-2 protein expression was not affected by NLA and L-NAME. PCWE inhibited PGE2 production and COX-2 protein expression in NLA/LPS or L-NAME/LPS-co-treated RAW 264.7 cell, however, baicalin or berberine did not. From the results, it was concluded that co-treatment with NOS inhibitors and PCWE effectively blocks acute production of NO and inhibits expression of iNOS and COX-2 genes.

Abstract
RP-HPLC is the main method for the analysis of alkaloids. However, peak tailing is a problem that commonly occurs in the separation of alkaloids. In order to overcome this, three kinds of RP columns were compared for the analysis of protoberberine alkaloids in Coptidis Rhizoma and Phellodendri Cortex in this work. XTerra MS C18 column was the best one which gave the best symmetry factor under the same conditions. With this column, a good separation of the crude extracts of C. Rhizoma and P. Cortex was achieved using 0.1% v/v formic acid buffer and methanol as mobile phase. At the same time, the crude extracts of C. Rhizoma and P. Cortex were analyzed by the LC-ESI-MSn and LC-atmospheric pressure chemical ionization (APCI)-MSn methods. In the analysis of HPLC-ESI/MSn, structures of five protoberberine alkaloids were elucidated, compared to authentic standards, and data from the literature. At the same time, the structure of a novel compound was elucidated. In the HPLC-APCI/ MSn analysis, there was an interesting phenomenon that the relative abundance of the ions M+ and [M + 2]+ was different for different alkaloids. The possible fragmentation pathways of protoberberine alkaloids in APCI/MS analysis were studied for the first time in the present work.

Abstract
An inductively coupled plasma mass spectrometry (ICP-MS) for determination of the contents of 8 trace heavy metal elements in cortex Phellodendron chinense after microwave-assisted digestion of the sample has been developed. The accuracy of the method was evaluated by the analysis of corresponding trace heavy metal elements in standard reference materials (GBW 07604 and GBW 07605). By applying the proposed method, the contents of 8 trace heavy metal elements in cortex Phellodendron chinense cultivated in different areas (in Bazhong, Yibin and Yingjing, respectively) of Sichuan and different growth period (6, 8 and 10 years of samples from Yingjing) were determined. The relative standard deviation (RSD) is in the range of 3.2%-17.8% and the recoveries of standard addition are in the range of 70%-120%. The results of the study indicate that the proposed method has the advantages of simplicity, speediness and sensitivity. It is suitable for the determination of the contents of 8 trace heavy metal elements in cortex Phellodendron chinense. The results also show that the concentrations of 4 harmful trace heavy metal elements As, Cd, Hg and Pb in cortex Phellodendron chinense are all lower than the limits of Chinese Pharmacopoeia and Green Trade Standard for Importing and Exporting Medicinal Plant and Preparation. Therefore, the cortex Phellodendron chinense is fit for use as medicine and export.

Abstract
In an attempt to develop an antiinflammatory herbal remedy that is as potent as current synthetic medicines, the cortex of Phellodendron amurense Rupr (Rutaceae) and the rhizomes of Coptis chinensis Franch (Ranunculaceae) were combined in a 2:1 ratio. This ratio was chosen based on in vitro experiments and traditional Asian medicine prescriptions. The combined ethanol extract, named RAH13, was evaluated for antiinflammatory properties using animal models of acute inflammation such as the croton oil-induced ear edema test and an acetic acid-induced capillary permeability test. Models of chronic inflammation were also tested using the cotton pellet test and a delayed-type hypersensitivity (DTH) test. Oral administration of RAH13 at a dose of 200 mg/kg showed in vivo antiinflammatory activity as potent as the effects associated with 100 mg/mL of celecoxib or 1 mg/kg of dexamethasone. These effects were seen in both acute and chronic inflammation models, suggesting that RAH13 may be effective in controlling some inflammation-related diseases.

Abstract
Activation of microglia has been increasingly associated with the pathogenesis of several neurodegenerative disorders including Parkinson's and Alzheimer's diseases, and the suppression of microglial activation may lead to alleviation of the progression of neurodegeneration in these diseases. We sought to investigate whether Phellodendri cortex (PC) that has been used for centuries in Chinese traditional medicine for the treatment of various inflammatory conditions, inhibits production of anti-inflammatory cytokines and nitric oxide (NO) in microglia, and further studied the molecular and cellular mechanisms that govern these anti-inflammatory effects. The methanol extract of PC (PC extract) attenuated LPS-stimulated increase in production of TNF-alpha, IL-1beta, and NO in BV2 cells, a mouse microglia cell line, as well as in primary mouse microglia. The RNase protection assay and RT-PCR revealed that the PC extracts inhibited increases in mRNAs of these cytokines and iNOS in LPS-stimulated BV2 cells. The PC extracts significantly decreased release of these cytokines and NO from LPS-stimulated microglia in a dose-dependent manner. Molecular mechanisms that govern attenuation of the levels of mRNAs and proteins of these cytokines and iNOS revealed that the PC extract inhibited LPS-stimulated phosphorylation of ERK and activation of NF-kappaB. The studies demonstrate that the PC extract effectively inhibits microglial production and release of inflammatory cytokines and NO, and could be a candidate agent for anti-inflammation in neurodegenerative human brain diseases.

Abstract
Three limonoids and five alkaloids were isolated from the chloroform layer of the MeOH extract of the bark of Phellodendron amurense (Rutaceae). The structures of the compounds isolated were determined to be obacunone (1), limonin (2), 12alpha-hydroxylimonin (3), gamma-fagarine (4), oxyberberine (5), canthin-6-one (6), 4-methoxy-N-methyl-2-quinolone (7) and oxypalmatine (8) based on the physicochemical and spectroscopic data. Compounds 3, 5, 7, and 8 were first isolated from the Phellodendron amurense. The isolated compounds were then tested for their cytotoxicity against five human tumor cell lines in vitro using the SRB method. Compound 5 showed significant cytotoxicity against the five tumor cell lines with ED50 values ranging from 0.30 to 3.0 microg/mL. The marginal or noncytotoxic compounds (1, 2, 3, 4, and 7) were examined for their P-gp related MDR reversal activities. Compound 1 showed significant P-gp MDR inhibition activity in MES-SA/DX5 and HCT15 cells with an ED50 value of 0.028 microg/mL and 0.0011 microg/mL, respectively.

Abstract
A new generation of solid-phase microextraction (SPME) fiber, an internally cooled fiber (cold fiber with polydimethylsiloxane loading) that allows heating the sample matrix and simultaneously cooling the fiber coating, was used to determine 2,4-dichloroanisole, 2,6-dichloroanisole, 2,4,6-trichloroanisole and pentachloroanisole in cork. A comparison between the cold fiber and regular SPME fiber was performed. An automated headspace solid-phase microextraction (HS-SPME) using commercial fibers and an internally cooled SPME fiber (CF-HS-SPME) coupled to gas chromatography-time-of-flight mass spectrometry (GC-TOF-MS) was used. The extraction conditions for both CF-HS-SPME and HS-SPME were optimized using full factorial design and Doehlert matrix. The best extraction conditions for CF-HS-SPME were obtained using 10 min of incubation time, 10 min of extraction time, and sample and fiber temperature of 130 and 10 degrees C, respectively. For HS-SPME, polydimethylsiloxane/divinylbenzene (PDMS/DVB) fiber was used with 10 min of incubation time, 75 min of extraction time, 85 degrees C of sample temperature, 8 ml of water was added and agitated at 500 rpm. The quantification limits for the target compounds using CF-HS-SPME procedure were between 0.8 and 1.6 ng g(-1) of cork, while for HS-SPME were between 4 and 6 ng g(-1) of cork. Furthermore, the CF-HS-SPME procedure could be used as a non-destructive method after minor modification of the agitator for the autosampler.

Abstract
The aim of this study was to elucidate the characteristics of glutathione S-transferase (GST)-activating compounds from medicinal plants. Among 265 kinds of medicinal plants, Phellodendron amurense showed the highest GST activity at 174.8%. The GST-activating compound of P. amurense was maximally extracted when treated with distilled water at 30 degrees C for 12 h. The compound was purified by ultrafiltration, Sephadex G-10 gel filtration chromatography, and reverse-phase HPLC. The purified GST-activating compound from P. amurense was a novel tetrapeptide with an amino acid sequence of Ala-Pro-Trp-Cys and its molecular weight was estimated to be 476 Da. It also displayed a clear detoxicative effect in 1-chloro-2,4-dinitrobenzene treated mice at a dosage of mg/kg body weight.

Abstract
The new solvent-free technique called headspace sorptive extraction (HSSE) was used to determine 2,4,6-trichlorophenol, 2,3,4,6-tetrachlorophenol, 2,4,6-trichloroanisole, 2,3,4,6-tetrachloroanisole, 2,4,6-tribromoanisole, pentachloroanisole in cork stoppers, without grinding them, as these may be responsible for the cork taint off-flavour in wine. The best HSSE sorption kinetics for the target analytes were obtained after submitting the spiked corks to 100 degrees C for 1h, followed by a 30 min stabilization time at room temperature. The stir bar was desorbed in a thermal desorption system coupled to a gas chromatograph-mass spectrometer. The method proposed showed good linearity over the concentration range tested, 1-70 ngg(-1), and correlation coefficients ranged from 0.90 to 0.99 for all the analytes. The reproducibility and repeatability of the method were estimated between 4.91 and 12.67%. The effect of the different cork matrixes on the extraction recovery of the target compounds was studied, with the natural corks showing the higher recovery percentage in relation to agglomerate ones.

Abstract
OBJECTIVE To study the analgesic, antipyretic and anti-inflammatory effect of Bailian Caogen granule. METHOD The antipyretic effects of Bailian Caogen granule was evaluated in rabbit fever model induced by peptone. The analgesic effect of the drug was studied with pain model of mice induced by acetic acid and hot plate, The severity of oedema in inflamed animal was observed to study the anti-inflammatory effects of Bailian Caogen granule. RESULT Bailian Caogen granule could obviously inhibit the fever of rabbits. The number of writhing induced by acetic acid was reduced and the pain threshold of mice was increased by Bailian Caogen granule. Bailian Caogen granule also had anti-inflammatory activity against xylene-induced mouse ear swelling and carrageenin-induced rat paw edema. CONCLUSION Bailian Caogen granule has significant analgesic, antipyretic and anti-inflammatory activities.

Abstract
AIM To establish a comprehensive HPLC analytical method of Huanglianjiedu decoction. METHODS This study was performed by HPLC-UV/MS to identify the chemical constituents of the whole and individual herbs of the "Huanglianjiedu decoction". Zorbax Extend C18 (150 mm x 4. 6 mm ID, 5 microm) column was used; the mobile phase was composed of acetonitrile (A) and water (B, with 0.5% acetic acid) with gradient elution; the flow rate was 1.0 mL x min(-1) and the column temperature was setup at 25 degrees C. The detection wavelength was 254 nm. RESULTS The chromatogram of Huanglianjiedu decoction showed 21 main peaks. Peaks 1, 2, 5 and 18 were from Gardenia jasminoides Ellis, Peaks 8, 13, 14, 15, 16, 17, 19 and 21 from Scutellaria baicalensis Georgi. While 10 from Coptis chinensis Franch and 20 from Phellodendron amurense Rupr., Peaks 3, 4, 6, 9, 11 and 12 came from them together. Peak 7 presented in the chromatograms of the herbs except Gardenia jasminoides Ellis. By comparison of the retention time, the on-line UV spectra and MS spectra, 11 peaks were identified as 5 (geniposide), 9 (jatrorrhizine), 10 (coptisine), 11 (palmatine), 12 (berberine), 13 (baicalin), 15 (oroxin A), 17 (wogonoside), 19 (baicalein), 20 (obaculactone), 21 (wogonin), then eight of them were quantified by HPLC-UV. CONCLUSION The method could represent the characteristics of Huanglianjiedu decoction, and it could be used to evaluate the quality and quantity of Huanglianjiedu decoction. It distinguished between Coptis chinensis Franch and Phellodendron amurense Rupr. by HPLC for the first time.

Abstract
Chloroanisoles can migrate from the cork stopper in wine bottles to the wine and give it a musty taint so it is important to find a method by which they can be determined. The aim of this paper is to develop a method for quantifying 2,4-dichloroanisole, 2,6-dichloroanisole, 2,4,6-trichloroanisole, 2,3,4,6-tetrachloroanisole and 2,3,4,5,6-pentachloroanisole in cork using headspace solid-phase microextraction and gas chromatography with electron capture detection. After we had prepared the cork standards that were so essential to the work we optimised the parameters that most influence headspace solid-phase microextraction: fibre coating, vial volume, cork, kind and volume of solvent to help the extraction, extraction temperature and time, ionic strength and stirring. The method quantifies the total amount of chloroanisoles in cork stoppers (natural, agglomerated, agglomerated with disks and sparkling wine stoppers), at suitable concentrations so that the capacity of these compounds to give wine a musty taint can be evaluated. The quantification limits are: 2,6-dichloroanisole (8.6 ng/g), 2,4,6-trichloroanisole (0.8 ng/g), 2,4-dichloroanisole (3.5 ng/g), 2,3,4,6-tetrachloroanisole (0.6 ng/g), 2,3,4,5,6-pentachloroanisole (0.8 ng/g). The other quality parameters are: recoveries (90.3-105.8%), repeatability (4-13% (RSD expressed)) and intermediate precision (5-14% (RSD expressed)).

Abstract
This paper describes the development of an analytical method consisting of pressurised fluid extraction (PFE) and gas chromatography-mass spectrometry (GC-MS) using experimental designs to determine two volatile compounds in naturally-tainted cork stoppers. The target analytes, 2,4,6-trichloroanisole (2,4,6-TCA) and guaiacol, are involved in the cork taint of wine. First, a Plackett-Burman experimental design was carried out in order to determine the significant experimental parameters affecting the PFE process, and then a central composite design was used to optimise these significant parameters. Once the method had been optimised, the influence of the number of extraction cycles was studied. The method was applied to determine the concentration of 2,4,6-TCA and guaiacol in three cork samples, and the results were compared with the ones obtained by multiple headspace-solid-phase microextraction (MHS-SPME) and by Soxhlet extraction.

Abstract
Three new coumarins, phellodenols F-H (1-3) and a new glutaric acid derivative, phellodendric acid-A (4) were isolated from the leaves of Phellodendron amurense together with twenty-nine known compounds. Extensive 1D and 2D NMR experiments and other spectroscopic studies were employed to determine the structures of 1-4. The isolated compounds were screened for their antioxidant activity through DPPH (alpha,alpha-diphenyl-beta-picrylhydrazyl) radical scavenging assay. Compounds quercetin, quercetin-3-O-beta-D-glucoside, quercetin-3-O-beta-D-galactoside and kaempferol-3-O-beta-D-glucoside demonstrated significant radical scavenging activity comparable to vitamin E.

Abstract
OBJECTIVE To explain functions, differences and coordination of three divided combinations of the "Erxian decoction", the famous traditional Chinese formula, on the effective sites of gonad gland at the cell level. METHOD The effects of Erxian decoction and its main disassembled prescriptions, "Kidney Warming", "Yin Nourishing" and "Chong-ren Adjusting", on the level of testosterone (T) progesterone (P) estradiol (E2), respectively secreted by the primary culture Leydig cell, luteal cell and granulosa cell, were measured by radioimmunoassay. RESULT (1) Erxian decoction could stimulate the T secretion while its three main disassembled prescriptions would seem no individual promoting effect on the secretion of T. (2) Erxian decoction and the "Kidney Warming" had the stimulating effect on P secretion, and the action of the whole formula being better than that of the "Kidney Warming". (3) Erxian decoction and its main disassembled prescriptions had the stimulating effect on E2 secretion, especially the whole formula. CONCLUSION Erxian decoction can stimulate the secretion of T of the Leydig cell, P of luteal cell and E2 of granulosa cell. It can be seen that the effect of the whole formula is better than that of its main disassembled prescriptions.

Abstract
Biphentrin, a known pyrethroid, was studied, aiming its removal from aqueous solutions by granulated cork sorption. Batch experiments, either for equilibrium or for kinetics, with two granulated cork sizes were performed and results were compared with those obtained with of activated carbon sorption. Langmuir and Freundlich adsorption isotherms were obtained both showing high linear correlations. Bifenthrin desorption was evaluated for cork and results varied with the granule size of sorbent. The results obtained in this work indicate that cork wastes may be used as a cheap natural sorbent for bifenthrin or similar compounds removal from wastewaters.

Abstract
Multiple headspace solid-phase microextraction (MHS-SPME) coupled with gas chromatography-mass spectrometry has been applied in order to determine 2,4,6-trichloroanisole (2,4,6-TCA), guaiacol, 1-octen-3-ol and 1-octen-3-one in three samples of cork stoppers. These compounds are responsible for cork taint in wine and can modify the organoleptic properties of bottled wine. Variables such as temperature, addition of water, extraction time, and amount of cork were studied. The extractions were performed with a 50/30 microm divinylbenzene-carboxen-polydimethylsiloxane (DVB-CAR-PDMS) fibre for 45 min at 100 degrees C using 20 mg of cork. For calibration, 50 microL of VOC aqueous solutions were used and the extraction were carried out for 45 min at 75 degrees C. The limits of detection of the method expressed as ng of VOC per g of cork were 0.3 for 2,4,6-TCA, 7.5 for guaiacol, 1.7 for 1-octen-3-one and 1.9 for 1-octen-3-ol. Relative standard deviation of replicate samples was less than 10%. Significant losses of analytes were observed when the samples were ground at room temperature. Finally, a recovery study was performed and the MHS-SPME results were validated using Soxhlet extraction results.

Abstract
OBJECTIVE To investigate the effects of processing Phellodendron anurene with salt on anti-gout. METHOD The mouse serum uric acid level and liver xanthine oxidase activity were used to evaluate anti-gout effects of raw and processing P. amurense with salt. RESULT Both raw and processing P. amurense with salt reduced serum uric acid levels in the in hyperuricemic mice, and inhibited activities of liver xanthine oxidase at the low and high doses respectively, thus exhibiting anti-gout effects. Moreover, they showed the tendency to decrease the uric acid levels in the normal animal only at the high dose. The latter was a little weaker than the former. CONCLUSION Processing with salt might not significantly change anti-gout effect of P. amurense.

Abstract
Three new flavonoid derivatives, 6'''-O-acetyl amurensin (1), 6'''-O-acetyl phellamurin (3) and (2R)-phellodensin-F (5), together with thirty known compounds have been isolated from the leaves of Phellodendron japonicum MAXIM. Their structures were established by means of spectroscopic analysis, including extensive 2D NMR and Mass spectra. The known compounds were identified by comparison with published physical and spectral data. The isolated compounds were screened for their in vitro antioxidant activity through DPPH (1,1-diphenyl-2-picrylhydrazyl) radical scavenging assay. Compounds quercetin and phellodenin-A demonstrated significant radical scavenging activity.

Abstract
The polysaccharide fractions were isolated and purified from Phellodendron chinese SCHNEID, and antitumor activities were examined at dosages of 2, 5 and 10 mg/100 g. F-7 and F-8 showed the highest tumor inhibitory activities (inhibition ratio 96.4 and 98.2% in 2 mg/100 g), and in dose of 5 mg/100 g, the inhibitory ratios were 95.3 and 97.5%, respectively. Furthermore, 10 mg/100 g of intraperitoneal (i.p.) injection gave 97.3 and 98.7% of inhibition. In oral administration, the inhibitory activities were not markedly observed, indicating that the polysaccharides are directly acting to immune system. Also the polysaccharides increased the number of circulating blood leukocytes and total peritoneal exudate cells. Although implantation of tumor cells greatly decreased the productivity of antibody (antibody-mediated) and T lymphocyte reactivity (delayed-type) as 6.3 from 9.3 and 5.9 from 7.7, represented by the increase of footpad thickness, respectively. The polysaccharides elevated the reactivity of T lymphocyte in tumor-bearing mice, which were rapidly recovered by discontinuance of sample treatments. Especially, F-2, F-5, F-7 and F-8 remarkably recovered the decreased sensitivity. When the effects on thymidylate synthase (TS) and thymidine kinase (TK) activities were determined, TS activities in the F-2 and F-7-treated mice were markedly suppressed to 73.7% and 79.5% of that in the control (p < 0.01), while there was little difference in TK activity with a slight decrease in F-2 only. However, in i.p. injection, TS activities in the F-2, F-5, F-7 and F-8-treated mice were markedly suppressed to 83% to 85% of that in the control (p < 0.01). Furthermore, there were also significant differences in TK activities in F-2, F-5, F-7 and F-8-treated mice (p < 0.05). These results clearly indicated that the i.p. injection is much effective to suppress tumor growth than oral administration.

Abstract
OBJECTIVE To study the compatibility of composite herbal medicines of the Zishen pill. METHOD 50% ethanol extract test solution of the different combinations of composite herbal medicines of the Zishen pill were prepared. Pharmacologic experiments, such as anti-inflammatory, carbon particle clearance of RES were carried out with the solutions, and the corresponding pharmacological data were obtained. Variance analysis, canonical correlation and stepwise regression analysis were applied to interrelate the amount of each drug and the pharmacological data. RESULT The results confirmed that Huangbo and Zhimu were the basis, while Rougui was the corrigent, which was conformed to the theory of TCM. CONCLUSION This study provides a significant try for studying the compatibility of composite herbal medicines.

OBJECTIVE To study the releasing rate of chrysophanol from Ruyi Jinhuang plaster. METHOD Based on the detecting methods of releasing rate and residual dosage applied in (Pharmacopoeia of P. R. C) (2000 edition), the contents of chrysophanol were detected by HPLC. RESULT Chrysophanol in Ruyi Jinhuang plaster could well be released from plaster and to form medicinal concentration gradient. CONCLUSION Chrysophanol in Ruyi-Jinhuang plaster can possibly be absorbed by skin.

Abstract
OBJECTIVE To investigate the effect of huanglian jiedu tang on Alzheimer' s disease, and its influence on cytokines. METHOD AD rats models were made by A beta injection, and then water-maze tests were made to investigate the study and memory ability. TNF-alpha, INF-gamma and IL-2 were examined by ELISA. After treatment with huanglian jiedu tang, the rats were evaluated again. RESULT After A beta injection, the study and memory ability of the rats was decreased. By the treatment with huanglian jiedu tang, it was improved (P < 0.01); TNF-alpha, INF-gamma and IL-2 levels of AD rats were higher than those in control group (P < 0.01); after treatment the levels came down (P < 0.01). CONCLUSION Huanglian jiedu tang can improve the study and memory ability of AD rats by changing their immune state.

Abstract
Two new dihydroflavonols, phellodensin-A (1) and phellodensin-C (2); three new coumarins, phellodenol-A (3), phellodenol-B (4), and phellodenol-C (5); one new chlorophyll, phellophyll-a (6); and one new phenyllactate, (2R)-sodium 3-phenyllactate (7), in addition to 35 known compounds have been isolated from the leaves of Phellodendron amurense var. wilsonii. The structures of the new compounds were established based on 1D, 2D NMR and mass spectral analyses. The stereochemistry at the C-2, C-3, and C-2' ' positions of new dihydroflavonol 1 was determined by CD spectroscopy. The known compounds were identified by comparison with authentic samples. The antioxidant and antityrosinase activities were also described.

Abstract
AIM To evaluate the efficacy and safety of Prostant in the treatment of chronic prostatitis. METHODS One hundred and nineteen cases of patients who had been diagnosed of chronic prostatitis were treated by Prostant. The efficacy was evaluated by WBC in EPS and NIH Chronic Prostatitis Symptom Index after a one-month follow-up. RESULTS After the one-month follow-up, the total improvement rate is 65.5 %, the WBC in the prostatic fluid were reduced from (21+/-20) to (12+/-13)/High-power field (HPF); the symptom index score changed from 12+/-4 to 7+/-5. The pain and voiding score of the symptom index were lowered from 8+/-3 to 5+/-3 and 3.9+/-2.7 to 2.3+/-2.3 respectively. All of above showed great statistic differences (P<0.05). Only 2 cases (1.7 %) reported serious diarrhea. CONCLUSION The Prostant is effective and safe in the treatment of chronic prostatitis, especially on those cases whose symptom and inflammation in prostatic fluid are not too serious.

Abstract
OBJECTIVE To find out the mechanism of Tangfukang on the diabetic nephropathy(DN). METHOD A Model of streptorotocin diabetic rats was used. The expressions of the AGEs, ICAM-1, IV-C and FN were observed in renal cortex of diabetic rats with immunohistochemical method. The level of the IL-1 beta in blood serum was measured by radioimmunoassay method and the level of TNF was determined in blood serum by ELISA method. Aminoguanidine was selected as the control medicine which could inhibit the expression of monenzymatic glycosylation end products of protein. All the results were compared to analyze the effect of Tangfukang on monenzymatic glycosylation of protein and cytokine expression in early diabetic nephropathy rats. RESULTS Both Tangfukang and aminoguanidine significantly decreased the expression of AGEs, but Tangfukang was greatly superior to aminoguanidine in suppressing the expression of cytokine like ICAM-1, IL-1 beta, TNF-alpha and the ingredients of extracellular matrix like IV-C, FN. CONCLUSION It may be the partical mechanism of Tangfukang to suppress the monenzymatic glycosylation of protein and to reduce the expression of cytokine in diabetes. The effect of Tangfukang is superior to that of aminoguanidine.

Abstract
A rapid and accurate method for determining alkaloids from Coptis chinensis Franch, and Phellodendron amurense Rupr, decocted together in Baitouweng decocta was established. Experiments were carried out on a self-assembled capillary electrophoresis system. The experimental conditions were as follows: 75 microns i.d. x 50 cm fused silica capillary, 0.05 mol/L Na2B4O7-CH3OH (85:15, V/V) as buffer, applied voltage 14 kV and detection wavelength 232 nm. In addition, the concentration of ethanol in the extraction solvent was optimized. Experimental results showed that ethanol-water (30:70, V/V) was the ideal solvent to extract the main effective ingredients from Coptis chinensis Franch. and Phellodendron amurense Rupr. decocted together in Baitouweng decocta. Berberine and palmatine had good linearities in the range of 15.0 mg/L-65.0 mg/L and 12.5 mg/L-50.0 mg/L respectively, and their average recoveries were 95.5%-104% (RSD 2.7%-6.9%) and 92.1%-103% (RSD 4.5%-6.7%) respectively.

High speed countercurrent chromatography was successfully applied to the separation of alkaloids from Cortex Phellodendri with a two-phase solvent system composed of CHCl3-CH3OH-0.5 mol/L HCl (2:1:1, volume ratio). Some alkaloid components were obtained, and identification of berberine was made by thin-layer chromatography.

Abstract
OBJECTIVE To investigate the effects of different processing products of Cortex Phellodendri on scavenging oxygen free radicals and anti-lipid peroxidation. METHOD The oxygen free radicals generation system and mouse liver homogenate lipid peroxidation in vitro were used. RESULT The aqueous and 80% alcohol extracts of raw, stir-fried, stir-fried with salt, stir-fried with yellow alcohol products of Cortex Phellodendri could scavenge superoxide radical(O2-.) generated through hypoxanthine-oxidase system and(.OH) generated through Fenton action, and inhibit lipid peroxidation induced by hydroxyl radical generation system, respectively. But the carbonized product has no effect. There are differences among these processed products. CONCLUSION 80% alcohol extract of stir-fried with yellow alcohol products of Cortex Phellodendri was more intense.

Abstract
OBJECTIVE To Study the granulation of processed Cortex Phellodendri. METHOD Take berberine, total alkaloids and dry extract as indexes to compare the semi-bionic extraction (SBE) with water extraction (WE). RESULT In 5 kinds of phellodendron bark solution, berberine, total alkaloids and dry extract obtained by SBE are much better than those obtained by WE. CONCLUSION In the preparation of oral granules from processed Cortex Phellodendri, SBE is superior to WE, when the pH value is adjusted by HCl solution to 1.0 in the first decoction, adjusted by saturated Ca(OH)2 solution to 7.0 in the second decoction and to 10.0 in the third decoction respectively.
