Abstract
Objective: To establish an animal model of pulmonary metastasis from nasopharyngeal carcinoma (NPC) and to investigate differential genes associated with pulmonary metastasis. Methods: CNE cell line was used to construct the stable metastasis CNE/Luc cell line which steadily expresses the fluorescent enzyme genes. The CNE/Luc cells were injected into immunodeficiency mice through tail vein, and with the in vivo imaging technology, the mice with pulmonary metastasis were filtered out. The pulmonary metastasis cells, were separated and injected into the tail vein of other nude mice to obtain the tissue-specificity metastasis cells confirmed by fluorescent imaging system. Based on the gene chip, the differential genes associated with pulmonary metastasis for NPC were found. Results: The gene expression profiles of nasopharyngeal carcinoma cell line CNE/Luc and their lung metastasis-associated subpopulation CNE/Luc-2 were constructed by gene chip technology. Ten metastasis-related genes were screened by software analysis, namely as TP53, PIK3CA, MET, KRAS, VEGFA, EDNRB, GSK3B, FOXO3, SOD2, and BIRC3. Conclusions: Some genes including TP53, PIK3CA, MET, KRAS, VEGFA, EDNRB, GSK3B, FOXO3, SOD2, and BIRC3 are indicated to have important roles in the lung metastasis of nasopharyngeal carcinoma.

Abstract
Hepatocellular carcinoma is one of the most common malignant tumors worldwide; it is estimated that there were 782,000 new cases in 2012. MicroRNAs (miRNAs) play an important role in carcinogenesis by regulating oncogenes and tumor suppressors. We investigated the role of miR-146a, miR-196a2, and miR-499 polymorphisms in the risk of hepatocellular carcinoma in a Chinese population. Hepatocellular carcinoma patients (175) and healthy controls (302) were recruited between April 2013 and March 2015. Genotype analysis of miR-146a, miR-196a2, and miR-499 polymorphisms was carried out by polymerase chain reaction-restriction fragment length polymorphism. There was a significant difference between the genotype distribution of miR-196a2 in hepatocellular carcinoma patients and controls (X2 = 17.23, P < 0.001). CG and GG miR-146a genotypes significantly elevated the risk of hepatocellular carcinoma compared with the CC genotype, with adjusted ORs (95%CI) of 3.05 (1.07-8.70) and 4.96 (1.64-14.97), respectively. In the recessive model, the CG + GG genotype had a 3.75-fold risk of hepatocellular carcinoma compared with the CC genotype, with an adjusted OR (95%CI) of 3.75 (1.39-10.11). However, no significant association was observed between miR-196a2 and miR-499 variants and risk of hepatocellular carcinoma in the co-dominant, dominant, and recessive models. The miR-146a polymorphism is a G to C substitution that causes a mismatch in the stem-loop of miRNA, which influences how the expression and transcriptional regulation of miRNA affects its target genes. Our study revealed that the GG and CG genotypes of miR-146a increased the risk of hepatocellular carcinoma in the Chinese population.

Abstract
The core-shell structure of Ag@CeO2 was prepared by a novel and facile method, which was based on the photothermal effect of localized surface plasmon resonance (LSPR). Nanoparticles (NPs) of Ag were dispersed in a solution containing citric acid, ethylene glycol and cerium nitrate, then under irradiation, Ag NPs generated heat from LSPR and the heat-induced polymerization reaction in the interface between Ag and the sol resulted in cerium gel formation only on the surface of the Ag NPs. After calcination, Ag@CeO2 was successfully obtained, then Ag@CeO2/SiO2 was prepared by loading Ag@CeO2 on SiO2. The resultant catalyst exhibited favorable activity and stability for CO oxidation. The preparation method proposed here should be extendable to other composites with metallic cores and oxide shells in which the metallic nanoparticle possesses LSPR properties.

Abstract
We conducted a case-control study to assess the relation-ship between rs35767, rs2288377, and rs5742612 insulin-like growth factor-1 (IGF-1) and osteoporosis risk in a Chinese female population. The genotypes of rs35767, rs2288377, and rs5742612 of IGF-1 were determined by polymerase chain reaction-restriction fragment length polymorphism. Patients with osteoporosis were more likely to have drinking and smoking habits and have lower bone mineral density in the L2-L4 vertebrae, femoral neck, and total hip. According to conditional regression analysis, individuals carrying the TT genotype of rs35767 had an increased risk of osteoporosis, with an adjusted odds ratio (95% confidence interval) of 2.29 (1.35-4.97). In conclusion, our results sug-gest that the TT genotype of IGF-I rs35767 was associated with an in-creased risk of osteoporosis, suggesting that this polymorphism can be used as a predictive factor for osteoporosis risk.

Abstract
OBJECTIVE To establish a reliable approach for measuring proximal femoral 3 dimensional anatomy, and to compare post-operative differences of proximal femoralanatomy in the inter-trochanter fractures with two kinds of antegrade nailings. METHODS Some computer assisted design (CAD) softwares, e.g. Mimics, were used to establish a reliable approach for measuring proximal femoral 3 dimensional (3D) anatomy. Intra-class correlation coefficient (ICC) was used to test the reliability of intra- and inter-observers. The post-operative pelvic CT data of 19 cases of inter-trochanter fracture patients treated with InterTAN nailing and 21 cases of inter-trochanter fracture patients treated with proximal femoral nail anti-rotation (PFNA) were retrospectively analysed and used to measure bilateral proximal femoral anatomical parameters, including 2D and 3D femoral neck-shaft (NS) angle and femoral neck anteversion (NA) angle, and 2D and 3D anteversion angles of the intramedullary (IM) nailings. ICC was used to test the consistency of the NA angles in the different groups, and the paired student T-test was used to test the differences of the paired quantitative data. RESULTS The established measurement method hasdexcellent consistency within the intra- and inter-observers, with all the ICCs higher than 0.9. The paired student T-test showed no significant difference between the post-operative bilateral 2D or 3D NA angles. The ICCs results showed that there were no consistency between the post-operative bilateral 2D or 3D NA angles (P values were 0.099 and 0.055, respectively), but the excellent consistency between the 2D injured side NA angle and 2D IM nailing's NA angle, or between the 3D injured side NA angle and 3D IM nailing's NA angle (the ICCs were 0.81 and 0.8, respectively, P values < 0.001). In PFNA group, 57% of the differences between the 2D post-operative injured side's and intact side's NA angles were higher than 15°, which was more than 15.78% in InterTAN group. The paired student T-test showed no significant difference between the post-operative injured side's 2D or 3D NS angles and the intact side's respective 2D or 3D angles in PFNA group (P values were 0.925 and 0.367, respectively), but in InterTAN group, the post-operative injured side's 2D or 3D NS angles were significantly smaller than the intact side's respective angles (P values were 0.033 and 0.009, respectively). CONCLUSION By analyzing and comparing bilateral proximal femoral anatomical parameters after two kinds of IM nailings procedures, the differences between the bilateral post-operative NA angles in PFNA group were significantly larger than those in InterTAN group. There was significant correlation between the NA angles of the injured sides and NA angles of IM nailings in both the groups.

Abstract
OBJECTIVE To explore the attitudes and perceptions of patient safety culture for pharmacy workers in China by using a Pharmacy Survey on Patient Safety Culture (PSOPSC), and to assess the psychometric properties of the translated Chinese language version of the PSOPSC. DESIGN Cross-sectional study. PARTICIPANTS Data were obtained from 20 hospital pharmacies in the southwest part of China. METHODS We performed χ(2) test to explore the differences on pharmacy staff in different hospital and qualification levels and countries towards patient safety culture. We also computed descriptive statistics, internal consistency coefficients and intersubscale correlation analysis, and then conducted an exploratory factor analysis. A test-retest was performed to assess reproducibility of the items. RESULTS A total of 630 questionnaires were distributed of which 527 were responded to validly (response rate 84%). The positive response rate for each item ranged from 37% to 90%. The positive response rate on three dimensions ('Teamwork', 'Staff Training and Skills' and 'Staffing, Work Pressure and Pace') was higher than that of Agency for Healthcare Research and Quality (AHRQ) data (p<0.05). There was a statistical difference in the perception of patient safety culture at different hospital and qualification levels. The internal consistency of the total survey was comparatively satisfied (Cronbach's α=0.89). CONCLUSIONS The results demonstrated that among the pharmacy staffs surveyed in China, there was a positive attitude towards patient safety culture in their organisations. Identifying perspectives of patient safety culture from pharmacists in different hospital and qualification levels are important, since this can help support decisions about action to improve safety culture in pharmacy settings. The Chinese translation of the PSOPSC questionnaire (V.2012) applied in our study is acceptable.

Abstract
We solve the Schrödinger equation with the improved Rosen−Morse potential energy model in D spatial dimensions. The D-dimensional rotation-vibrational energy spectra have been obtained by using the supersymmetric shape invariance approach. The energies for the 33[Formula: see text]g+ state of the Cs2 molecule and the 51Δg state of the Na2 molecule increase as D increases in the presence of fixed vibrational quantum number and various rotational quantum numbers. We observe that the change in behavior of the vibrational energies in higher dimensions remains similar to that of the three-dimensional system.

Abstract
Enalapril maleate (EM) is unstable in poorly designed tablet formulations. To improve the stability of EM, the degradation mechanism should be elucidated. In this study, we found that several commonly used excipients promoted the degradants of EM, particularly a diketopiperazine derivative (DKP). We propose two degradation pathways in which both acid and alkali can promote the formation of DKP, although previous reports suggested that DKP is produced mainly in acidic media. Based on the degradation pathways, we believe that subtle control of the microenvironmental pH can inhibit the formation of DKP. This was confirmed by the observation that the degradation rate became slower when certain organic acids were added to the binary mixtures of EM and excipient. The data showed that the stability of EM in the ternary mixtures was much higher than that in binary mixtures. It was further proved that tablets containing these organic acids produced less DKP after the accelerated test. We also found that the formation of DKP in tablets varied with different ratios of tartaric acid, which was used as a model organic acid. This illustrated that an optimum ratio of tartaric acid is required. These results indicated that the stability of EM in tablet formulation is closely associated with microenvironmental pH and the addition of a suitable organic acid based on the reaction mechanism is an effective strategy for improving the stability of EM.

Abstract
We solve the Schrödinger equation with the modified Rosen−Morse empirical potential model to obtain rotation-vibrational energy spectra and unnormalized radial wave functions. The vibrational energy levels calculated with the modified Rosen−Morse potential model for the 61Πu state of the 7Li2 molecule and the X3Π state of the SiC radical are in better agreement with the Rydberg−Klein−Rees data than the predictions of the Morse potential model.

Abstract
OBJECTIVES This research aims to specify the prognostic value of P-cadherin on recurrence and progression in non-muscle-invasive bladder cancers (NMIBC). METHODS A total of 110 NMIBC cases were collected and P-cadherin protein was assessed by immunohistochemical test in these samples. Correlations between P-cadherin expression and clinicopathologic features were analyzed. For recurrence-free and progression-free survival, Kaplan-Meier log-rank test was used. Then Cox univariate and multivariate analyses were further performed. RESULTS P-cadherin high expression correlated with tumor progression (P = 0.031). Kaplan-Meier results showed that patients with high P-cadherin expression had worse progression-free survival (P = 0.034) but not recurrence-free survival (P = 0.133) than low-expression patients. Cox regression results showed P-cadherin expression was an independent predictor for progression (P = 0.042) but not recurrence (P = 0.139) in NMIBC. CONCLUSIONS Our results demonstrated that P-cadherin expression correlated with tumor progression and could be taken as an independent predictor for progression in NMIBC.

Abstract
Corn is the most important cereal crop in China, with over 34.94 million ha being cultivated in the country annually. However, fungal diseases are a major limiting factor in corn production. In August 2012, 20 ha of corn fields in Anhui Province were found to be heavily infected by fungi. The margin of the lesion was achlorotic, and the middle was yellowish white or off-white, which was similar to the corn Curvalaria leaf spot. The oval lesions were approximately 5 to 7 mm. Lesion tissue was removed from the border between symptomatic and healthy tissue. The surface was sterilized in 75% ethanol for 30 s and 0.1% HgCl2 for 1 min, after which the sample was washed three times in sterile distilled water. The isolate was purified and subcultured on potato dextrose agar (PDA) at 25 ± 2°C. The initial color of the colony was light brown, turning dark brown after being cultured for 7 days. The conidia were boat-shaped or inverted pear-shaped and were clearly bent to one side. The cells of both ends were slightly lighter and respectively ranged from 34.5 to 44.0 μm and 12.0 to 21.0 μm away from the base, with the second cell as the widest. The majority conidia had three or four false septates; isolates produced light brown to medium brown conidiophore, scattered or clustered, often branching, and exhibited bending. These morphological characteristics matched with the description of Bipolaris papendorfii reported by Zhang (3). A pathogenicity test was conducted with the two isolates on each of the 36 corns by spraying 2 ml spore suspension (106 conidia/ml). For the control treatment, 36 corns were inoculated with an equal volume of sterilized water. Inoculated plants were placed in a greenhouse from 29 to 33°C and 95% relative humidity. The typical 5 to 7 mm oval lesions were observed 7 days after inoculation, except on the control samples. Three replications of 36 corns were used for each treatment. The isolate was consistently 100% reisolated from the diseased tissue according to Koch's postulate. The isolate was found to be morphologically similar to B. papendorfii. Preliminary morphological identification of the fungus was confirmed by PCR assay using genomic DNA extracted from the mycelium of a 7-day-old culture on PDA at 25 ± 2°C. A 550-bp amplified region of the internal transcribed spacer (ITS) of rDNA was generated using ITS1 (5'-TCCGTAGGTGAACCTGCGG-3') and ITS4 (5'-TCCTCCGCTTATTGATATGC-3') universal primers (1). The ITS region (GenBank Accession No. KC592365) was then sequenced by Sangon Biotech (Shanghai, China), and displayed 99% nucleotide similarity with the rDNA-ITS of B. papendorfii (JQ753972.1) separately after BLASTn research in GenBank. Based on the symptoms, fungal morphology, ITS sequence, and pathogenicity testing, this fungus was identified as B. papendorfii. The pathogen could reportedly infect tobacco and cotton (2). To our knowledge, this is the first study to report that B. papendorfii can infect corn in China. This report will establish a foundation for the further study of B. papendorfii to address the disease effectively. Further studies will be conducted to determine the incidence of the disease and the severity of damage caused by B. papendorfii as well as determine a possible mode for controlling the spread of the disease. Abstract
PURPOSE To examine HMGA2 expression and investigate its clinical and prognostic significance in human urothelial bladder cancer (BUC). METHODS We detected HMGA2 mRNA and protein expression by quantitative reverse-transcription polymerase chain reaction and western blotting, respectively in 44 frozen bladder cancer tissues and 18 adjacent normal bladder tissues. HMGA2 protein expression was assessed by immunohistochemical analysis of 148 paraffin-embedded specimens of human BUC and 30 specimens of adjacent normal bladder tissue. Correlations between HMGA2 and clinicopathologic features and prognosis were tested by statistical analyses. RESULTS HMGA2 mRNA and protein levels in bladder cancer samples were significantly increased compared with adjacent normal bladder tissues (P < 0.001). mRNA overexpression correlated with high stage and grade of the bladder cancer (P < 0.001 and P = 0.002 respectively). HMGA2 protein expression was negative in all normal urothelial tissue samples, but positive in 52% (77/148) of bladder cancers (P < 0.001). HMGA2 expression correlated with tumor grade and stage (P < 0.001 and P = 0.003 respectively), Overexpression of HMGA2 protein in non-muscle-invasive bladder cancer was significantly associated with shorter recurrence-free survival (P < 0.001), and progression-free survival (P = 0.0004). Multivariate analysis showed that HMGA2 expression was an independent prognostic factor for both tumor recurrence (P < 0.001) and tumor progression (P = 0.006). CONCLUSIONS HMGA2 is up-regulated in bladder cancer at both the transcriptional and translational levels compared with normal bladder tissue, HMGA2 protein is thus a potential prognostic marker for predicting tumor recurrence and progression.

Abstract
To determine the effect of dexamethasone on the antimyeloma effects of lenalidomide, we tested in vitro proliferation, tumor suppressor gene expression, caspase activity, cell cycling, and apoptosis levels in a series of multiple myeloma (MM) and plasma cell leukemia cell lines treated with lenalidomide and dexamethasone, alone or in combination. The effect of dexamethasone on the immunomodulatory activities of lenalidomide such as T cell and natural killer (NK) cell activation was measured via interleukin [IL]-2 production, and interferon-gamma and granzyme B production respectively. Lenalidomide inhibited proliferation in most cell lines tested, and this effect was enhanced by dexamethasone. This effect was observed in MM cells containing the high-risk cytogenetic abnormalities t(4;14), t(14;16), del17p, del13, and hypodiploidy. Mechanistically, lenalidomide plus dexamethasone synergistically induced expression of the tumor suppressor genes Egr1, Egr2, Egr3, p15, p21, and p27 in MM cell lines and MM patient cells. The combination activated caspases 3, 8, and 9; and induced cell cycle arrest and apoptosis. Lenalidomide alone increased T cell production of IL-2, and NK cell production of interferon-gamma and granzyme B. Notably, dexamethasone antagonized these immunostimulatory effects of lenalidomide in a dose-dependent manner. These data further elucidate the mechanism of action of lenalidomide and dexamethasone in MM, and suggest that use of low-dose dexamethasone with lenalidomide may retain the antiproliferative effect of lenalidomide while permitting greater immunomodulatory effects of this combination regimen.

Abstract
OBJECTIVE The concerns about the potential threats of human immunodeficiency virus (HIV) infection and acquired immunodeficiency syndrome (AIDS) have increased, since, in China, there is a lack of sexual education and condom use is rare. A community-based survey was conducted in September 2001 in Changchun city among 1227 unmarried young people aged 15-24 years (619 males and 608 females) to assess risky sexual practices and the obstacles to accessing appropriate contraceptive and other services. METHOD The study comprised a survey employing self-administered questionnaires, as well as key informant interviews, focus group discussions and in-depth interviews. This paper investigates the factors associated with young people's access to contraceptive services. RESULTS Results showed that 16% of young people had experienced premarital sexual intercourse and, among them, only 48.2% used contraceptive methods during the first sexual intercourse; 29.9% used a condom. Drug stores were the main source of contraceptives. CONCLUSIONS While data are sparse, findings suggest that the hostile and judgmental attitudes of providers, as well as the lack of counseling and privacy, were the key obstacles that unmarried youth encountered in their search for contraceptive services. Findings suggest the need for a reorientation of the contraceptive services to focus on unmarried youth, and generally to make contraceptive services more accessible to young people.

Abstract
Oligonucleotides consisting of isonucleoside 2',5'-anhydro-3'-nucleobase-D-mannitol incorporated in 1'→4' linkage mode were synthesized. Their binding behaviors with complementary sequences were investigated via thermal denaturation and CD spectra. 6' O-methyl-2',5'-anhydro-3'-(thymin-1-yl)-D-mannitol incorporated oligonucleotide was also synthesized to investigate the effect of hydroxy groups of isonucleosides on duplex formation. The results showed that the 6'-OH free isonucleosidemodified oligonucleotide was able to form a B-like duplex with 3'→5' complementary native oligodeoxynucleotide in the 1'→4' direction. The free hydroxy group in the isonucleoside made a significant contribution to the affinity of the modified oligonucleotide to the complementary sequence, which was confirmed by molecular dynamics simulation.

Abstract
Meloidogyne chitwoodi Golden et al. is a serious pest of potato (Solanum tuberosum L.), and is widespread in the Pacific Northwest United States. M. chitwoodi is currently reported to consist of two host races and one pathotype (2,3) that are not distinguished morphologically. Host race 1 reproduces on Chantenay carrot but not on Thor alfalfa and host race 2 reproduces on alfalfa but not on carrot. Both races fail to reproduce on roots of S. bulbocastanum, a wild potato species used as a source of resistance in our breeding program (1). The resistance to race 1 in S. bulbocastanum is attributed to Rmc1(blb) gene. Pathotype 1 of race 2 breaks resistance and reproduces on S. bulbocastanum (2). We have tested resistant breeding lines repeatedly in Prosser, WA field plots infested with MC race 1 and harvested tubers free from M. chitwoodi damage. In 2004 however, tubers of some resistant lines were damaged by the M. chitwoodi population that did not cause damage in the past. Populations of M. chitwoodi were established on tomato by adding peels obtained from the infected tubers of resistant lines. The reproductive factor, final number of eggs ÷ initial inoculum, of the new population was determined on five replications of 3-week-old Chantenay carrot and Thor alfalfa. Five thousand eggs were extracted from nematode cultures reared on tomatoes and then were added around the root system of the test plants. The plants were maintained in the greenhouse for 55 days before the nematode eggs were extracted and RF (reproductive factor = final/initial population) values determined. Like the MC race 1, new populations reproduced on Chantenay carrot (RF > 1) but failed to reproduce on Thor alfalfa (RF < 0.1). Unlike MC race 1, the new populations reproduced on roots of all breeding lines that carried Rmc1(blb) gene (RF > 1). These results suggest that the selected population of M. chitwoodi in the Prosser site is a new pathotype, which is designated pathotype 1 of MC race 1. References: (1) C. R. Brown et al. Am. J. Abstract
Sprague Dawley rats were randomised into three groups: group I (chow) were fed rat chow and water ad libitum, group II total parenteral nutrition (TPN) received a standard formula of TPN, and group III (TPN--epidermal growth factor (EGF)) received the same TPN as group II and injections of EGF (0.1 microg/gm body weight) subcutaneously twice daily. Glutamine (GLN) concentrations in tissues and blood were measured by reversed phase high performance liquid chromatography. Gut GLN extraction was calculated by dividing the difference in GLN concentrations (Conc) between the carotid artery (ART) and portal vein (PV) by the arterial concentration [(ART Conc - PV Conc)/ART Conc]. TPN induced a marked reduction of GLN concentration in tissues and blood, and also reduction of gut GLN extraction. When EGF was administered along with TPN, gut GLN concentration did not fall and gut GLN extraction was increased by 15% (TPN - EGF 1 week, P < 0.05). Arterial blood concentration of GLN was increased when TPN and EGF were used for 1 week (P < 0.05 vs control). But EGF did not prevent the GLN concentration of other tissues decreasing during TPN. Our results suggest that EGF can regulate intestinal uptake of GLN during TPN.

Abstract
West-central China is an important endemic focus of both alveolar and cystic echinococcosis where several species of intermediate host are commonly infected with Echinococcus granulosus and E. multilocularis . Isolates of E. granulosus were collected from humans and other animals from different geographical areas of Qinghai, Ningxia, Gansu and Sichuan, and genotyped using the mitochondrial DNA marker ATP synthase subunit 6 gene (atp6). The sheep strain (G1 genotype) of E. granulosus was shown to be the only genotype present in sheep, cattle, goats, yaks and humans in the study areas. However, some heterogeneity in the atp6 sequence was evident in a number of the isolates with the most frequent change being a silent substitution (G/A) at position 360 compared with the G1 reference sequence representing isolates collected from the majority of hosts except humans. Two E. multilocularis isolates examined also had sequences that varied from each other and from the reference E. multilocularis atp6 sequence. The genotypic variation we report may reflect phenotypic differences with important consequences in terms of increased host infectivity for hosts by local Echinococcus strains, possibly impacting on the epidemiology and control of echinococcosis. Such adaptations may also result in different sensitivity to drugs or increased virulence for hosts that will impede control efforts and even affect vaccination strategies against Echinococcus.

Abstract
On-board flow cytometric determinations of picoplankton abundance (i.e. Synechococcus spp., Prochlorococcus spp., picoeukaryotes and also heterotrophic bacteria) were obtained in the East China Sea in fall of 2000 and 2003. The average abundances of Synechococcus, Prochlorococcus, picoeukaryotes and heterotrophic bacteria were 10(5), 10(5), 10(4) and 10(6) cells ml(-1), respectively. Synechococcus, picoeukaryotes and heterotrophic bacteria were abundant at all the stations and presented higher concentration in the inner shelf where influences from the Changjiang effluent plumes and the coastal upwelling were evident, while Prochlorococcus was absent from the near-shore stations and became the dominant picophytoplankton population in offshore waters, where its abundance was comparable to that for heterotrophic bacteria. All picoplankton groups showed a reduction in cell number with depth, and a positive correlation with water temperature were observed, which reflected the importance of light and temperature on picoplankton growth. A negative relationship with salinity was found for heterotrophic bacteria along two sections across the East China Sea Shelf, and distribution of picoplankton was dominated by different water masses. The fixation could lead to loss in Prochlorococcus cell numbers within one month, and all the picoplankton numbers decreased dramatically after three months.

Abstract
Cystic echinococcosis, caused by Echinococcus granulosus, is highly endemic in North Africa and the Middle East. This paper examines the abundance and prevalence of infection of E. granulosus in camels in Tunisia. No cysts were found in 103 camels from Kébili, whilst 19 of 188 camels from Benguerden (10.1%) were infected. Of the cysts found 95% were considered fertile with the presence of protoscolices and 80% of protoscolices were considered viable by their ability to exclude aqueous eosin. Molecular techniques were used on cyst material from camels and this demonstrated that the study animals were infected with the G1 sheep strain of E. granulosus. Observed data were fitted to a mathematical model by maximum likelihood techniques to define the parameters and their confidence limits and the negative binomial distribution was used to define the error variance in the observed data. The infection pressure to camels was somewhat lower in comparison to sheep reported in an earlier study. However, because camels are much longer-lived animals, the results of the model fit suggested that older camels have a relatively high prevalence rate, reaching a most likely value of 32% at age 15 years. This could represent an important source of transmission to dogs and hence indirectly to man of this zonotic strain. In common with similar studies on other species, there was no evidence of parasite-induced immunity in camels.

Abstract
This paper reports a hospital-based longitudinal study that was conducted in Zibo, China, in June 1996. The objective was to investigate the existing patterns of breastfeeding, amenorrhea and contraceptive use among postpartum women in urban areas of China. Information was obtained from 492 newly parturient women. Follow-up interviews were done at 42 days. 4 months and 1 year after delivery. The results showed that the full breastfeeding rate (including exclusive and almost exclusive breastfeeding) was 78% and 43% at 42 days and 4 months after delivery, respectively. The mean reported length of abstinence from sexual intercourse after delivery was 71 days. The mean reported time to menses resumption was 184 days. Ninety-three per cent of women had resumed sexual intercourse at 4 months after delivery. Seventy-three per cent of women were using contraceptive methods when they resumed sexual activity after delivery. After childbirth, the majority ofthe women interviewed used condoms within 3 months. Thereafter, most of them switched to intrauterine device (IUD)). Life table analysis shows that the continuation rates of full breastfeeding and amenorrhea at 4 months after delivery were 35% and 68%, respectively. This implies that if the full breastfeeding rate can be prolonged, it is feasible to use the lactational amenorrhea method (LAM) among Chinese postpartum women. The policy implications of this study are that quality care on contraceptive services and information for postpartum women in urban areas need to be improved further.
