Comparative study of torsional and bending stress in NiTi, graphene, and GUM metal endodontic files by finite element analysis

INTRODUCTION

This study investigates the behavior of graphene and GUM in terms of cyclic fatigue resistance and torsion through a finite element analysis on a file with an eccentric rectangular cross section and variable taper, and on a file with a centered triangular cross section, constant taper, and constant pitch.

METHODS

Root canals and endodontic files were created using Catia V5R21 software. For torsional analysis, the tip of the file was fixed at 1 and 3 mm, and a moment of 2.5 N-mm was generated at the handle. For the bending analysis in curved canals (45° and 60°), the handle was kept fixed and a force of 1 N was applied at the tip while the file was kept fixed at 9 mm.

RESULTS

GUM metal instruments showed better torsional resistance. On the other hand, NiTi and graphene performed better under the applied loads during flexion at 45° and 60°.

CONCLUSION

GUM metal is emerging as a promising material in the field of endodontic instrument design due to its physical properties.

Metal-conjugated Maltotriose Chlorins as Novel Photosensitizers for Photodynamic Therapy

BACKGROUND/AIM

Photodynamic therapy (PDT) is a relatively non-invasive anti-cancer therapy that employs a photosensitizer with a specific wavelength of light, causing a photochemical reaction that releases free radicals, thereby inducing tumor cell necrosis via oxidative stress. The oxygen molecule reaches the singlet excited state through efficient energy transfer from an excited triplet state of the photosensitizer. Heavy atoms are frequently introduced in photosensitizers for efficiently generating reactive oxygen species (ROS) in PDT, known as the heavy atom effect. However, metal-complexed photosensitizers often show low water-solubility. To overcome this limitation and produce ROS effectively, we focused on the better solubility of photosensitizers with heavy metals bound within the chlorin skeleton and conjugated with glucose in this study.

MATERIALS AND METHODS

We established maltotriose (Mal3)-conjugation with heavy metallochlorins [M (Mal3-chlorin), M=Pt or Pd)] and evaluated its anti-tumor effect.

RESULTS

M (Mal3-chlorin) showed effective ROS production and singlet oxygen induction. Consequently, these cytotoxic factors caused effective anti-tumor effects and induced morphological changes, followed by cell death in vitro. In a xenograft tumor mouse model, PDT with M (Mal3-chlorin) showed tumor growth suppression.

CONCLUSION

M (Mal3-Chlorin) might be an excellent glucose-conjugated chlorin because of its strong anti-tumor PDT effect.

Screening, cloning, immobilization and application prospects of a novel β-glucosidase from the soil metagenome

The soil environment for straw return is a rich and valuable library containing many microorganisms and proteins. In this study, we aimed to screen a high-quality β-glucosidase (BGL) from the soil metagenomic library and to overcome the limitation of the low extraction rate of resveratrol in Polygonum cuspidatum. This includes the construction of a soil metagenomic library, screening of BGL, bioinformatics analysis, cloning, expression, immobilization, enzymatic property analysis, and application for the transformation of polydatin. The results showed that the soil metagenomic library of straw return was successfully constructed, and a novel BGL was screened. The identified 1356 bp long BGL belonged to the glycoside hydrolase 1 (GH1) family and was named Bgl1356. After successful cloning and expression of Bgl1356, it was immobilized using chitosan. The optimum temperature of immobilized Bgl1356 was 50 °C, and the pH was 5. It exhibited good tolerance for various metal ions (CO2+, Ni2+, Cu2+, Mn2+, Na2+, Ca2+, and Ag+) and organic solvents (DMSO, Triton-X-10, and ethanol). Enzymatic kinetics assays showed that Bgl1356 had good affinity for the substrate, and the specific enzyme activity was 234.03 U/mg. The conversion rate of polydatin by immobilized Bgl1356 was 95.70 ± 1.08%, facilitating the production of high amounts of resveratrol. Thus, this paper reports a novel temperature-, organic solvent-, and metal ion-tolerant BGL that has good application prospects in the pharmaceutical industry.

Results of a Highly Porous Metal-Backed Cementless Patella Implant: A Minimum 5-Year Follow-Up

Initial design cementless metal-backed patellar implants failed due to multiple reasons including implant design, use of first-generation polyethylene, and surgical technique. This study evaluates clinical outcomes and survivorship of total knee arthroplasty (TKA) using a current generation highly porous metal-backed patellar component. One-hundred twenty-five consecutive primary cementless TKAs with a compression molded highly porous metal-backed patella were reviewed. One-hundred three TKAs (82.4%) with 5-year clinical and radiographic follow-up were available for review. These were matched with 103 consecutive TKAs using a cemented patella of the same implant design. The cementless cohort had a mean age of 65.5 years, body mass index (BMI) of 33.0, and follow-up of 64.4 months. Indications for cementless TKA were based on multiple factors including age, BMI, and bone quality. There were no revisions for loosening or mechanical failure of the cementless patella compared with two cemented patellae revised for aseptic loosening. Eight patients required revisions in the cementless cohort: three for prosthetic joint infection (PJI), two for instability, one periprosthetic femur fracture, one for patella instability, and one for extensor mechanism rupture. Five patients required revisions in the cemented cohort: two for aseptic patellar loosening, one for aseptic femoral loosening, one for PJI, and one for instability. All-cause survivorship at 5 years was 92.2 and 95.1% for the cementless metal-backed implant and cemented implant cohorts, respectively. Use of a compression molded highly porous metal-backed patella component demonstrated excellent clinical and radiographic results at 5-year follow-up. Longer follow-up is required to evaluate the ability of highly porous cementless patella implants to provide durable long-term fixation.

Techno-economic feasibility of a recycling plant for the extraction of metals and boehmite from hazardous petroleum spent catalysts

Petroleum spent hydroprocessing catalysts are hazardous solid waste, the efficient recycling of which is a serious challenge to refineries. However, information on the economic feasibility of spent catalysts recycling plants is scarce, which is critical for environmental authorities and decision-makers. In this work, an innovative recycling scheme targeting hydrometallurgical recovery of base metals (Ni, Mo, and V) and transforming low-value Al residue into a high-value boehmite (γ-AlOOH) as the key product was considered an efficient way to beneficiate the hazardous spent hydroprocessing catalysts. A preliminary techno-economic evaluation of such a recycling scheme was performed to assess the feasibility of the proposed recycling scheme. The recovery cost (valuable metals and boehmite) and potential revenue were estimated to study the economics of the process. The preliminary results have suggested that the recycling scheme is economically feasible with a high internal rate of return (IRR) of 12.3%, a net present value of 38.6 million USD, and a short payback period of 8.7 years. Furthermore, a sensitivity analysis (± 10%) conducted on key parameters showed that the selling prices of the finished products and the cost of chemicals were the most important factors affecting plant economics. Overall, the recycling scheme was sustainable and avoided landfilling of spent catalysts as the residue can be beneficiated into a high-value product. The results from the economic feasibility study are likely to assist the stakeholders and decision-makers in making investment and policy decisions for the valorization of spent hydroprocessing catalysts.

Associations between multiple metal exposure and fertility in women: A nested case-control study

Metal pollution can cause a decline in female fertility, however, previous studies have focused more on the effect of a single metal on fertility. In this study, we evaluated the effect of metal mixtures on female fertility based on nested case-control samples. The plasma levels of 22 metal elements from 180 women were determined by an inductively coupled plasma mass spectrometer (ICP-MS). Minimum absolute contraction and selection operator (LASSO) penalty regression selected metals with the greatest influence on clinical outcome. Logistic regression was used to analyze the correlation between single metals and fertility while a Bayesian kernel function regression (BKMR) model was used to analyze the effect of mixed metals. Eight metals (Calcium (Ca), Chromium (Cr), Cobalt (Co), Copper (Cu), Zinc (Zn), Rubidium (Rb), Strontium (Sr) and Zirconium (Zr)) were selected by LASSO regression for subsequent analysis. After adjusting for covariates, the logistic model showed that Cu (Odds Ratio(OR):0.33, 95% CI: 0.13 - 0.84) and Co (OR:0.38, 95% CI: 0.15 -0.94) caused a significant reduction in fertility, and identified the protective effect of Zn (OR: 2.96, 95% CI:1.21 -7.50) on fertility. Trend tests showed that increased Cr, Cu, and Rb levels were associated with reduced fertility. The BKMR model showed that Cr, Co, Cu, and Rb had a nonlinear relationship with fertility decline when controlling for the concentrations of other metals and suggested that Cu and Cr might exert an influence on fertility. Analysis showed a negative correlation between Cu, Cr, Co, Rb, and fertility, and a positive correlation between Zn and fertility. Furthermore, we found evidence for the interaction between Cu and Cr. Our findings require further validation and may identify new mechanisms in the future.

Contrasting trophic transfer patterns of cadmium and mercury in the Arctic marine food web of east Hudson Bay, Canada

We investigated trophic transfer of cadmium (Cd) through an Arctic marine food web in Hudson Bay and compared it with mercury (Hg), a metal known to strongly biomagnify. We evaluated blue mussel, sea urchin, common eider, sculpin, Arctic cod, and ringed seal for the influence of dietary and biological variables on variation in Cd and Hg concentrations. Age and size influenced metal concentrations among individuals within a vertebrate species. Consumer carbon and sulfur isotope values were correlated with their Cd and Hg concentrations, indicating habitat-specific feeding influenced metal bioaccumulation. Trophic transfer patterns for Cd depended on the vertebrate tissue, with food web biodilution observed for the muscle but not the liver. Liver Cd concentrations were higher in ringed seal and some common eider relative to prey. In contrast, we observed mercury biomagnification for both tissues. Tissue- and species-specific physiology can explain discrepancies of Cd trophic transfer in this Arctic marine food web.

Recovery of metal ion resources from waste lithium batteries by in situ electro-leaching coupled with electrochemically switched ion exchange

A new green pathway of in situ electro-leaching coupled with electrochemically switched ion exchange (EL-ESIX) technology was developed for the separation and recovery of valuable metal ions from waste lithium batteries. By using the in situ electro-leaching, the leaching rates of Li+ and Co2+ from the prepared LiCoO2 film electrodes reached 100 % and 93.30 %, respectively, under the combined effect of the acidic microenvironment formed by the anodic electrolytic water and electrostatic repulsion. Subsequently, the Li+ in the electrolyte was further extracted by an electrochemically switched ion exchange (ESIX) process using LiMn2O4 as the film electrode, and Li+ was further enriched in the eluate by a cyclic adsorption and desorption process. The results indicate that the in situ electro-leaching has significant advantages over powder leaching, and for the recycling of waste lithium batteries, the final lithium recovery rate reached 94.51 % by using this in situ EL-ESIX technology.

Assessment of co-contaminated soil amended by graphene oxide: Effects on pollutants, microbial communities and soil health

Graphene oxide (GOx) is a nanomaterial with demonstrated capacity to remove metals from water. However, its effects on organic pollutants and metal(loid)s present in polluted soils when used for remediation purposes have not been extensively addressed. Likewise, few studies describe the effects of GOx on edaphic properties and soil biology. In this context, here we assessed the potential of GOx for remediating polluted soil focusing also on different unexplored effects of GOx in soil. To achieve this, we treated soil contaminated with concurrent inorganic (As and metals) and organic pollution (TPH and PAHs), using GOx alone and in combination with nutrients (N and P sources). In both cases increased availability of As and Zn was observed after 90 days, whereas Cu and Hg availability was reduced and the availability of Pb and the concentration of organic pollutants were not significantly affected. The application of GOx on the soil induced a significant and rapid change (within 1 week) in microbial populations, leading to a transient reduction in biodiversity, consistent with the alteration of several soil properties. Concurrently, the combination with nutrients exhibited a distinct behaviour, manifesting a more pronounced and persistent shift in microbial populations without a decrease in biodiversity. On the basis of these findings, GOx emerges as a versatile amendment for soil remediation approaches.

Concentration of metals and metalloids in livers of birds of various foraging guilds collected during the autumn migration period in Poland

During migration, birds explore various habitats at stopover sites that differ in food resources and contamination levels. In this study, hepatic concentrations of 21 elements (metals and metalloids) in 11 species of birds, representing various foraging habitats (such as aquatic, aquatic/terrestrial, and terrestrial) and migration modes (migratory and sedentary) representing various foraging guilds (omnivores, piscivores, and molluscivores), were analyzed. The samples (N = 84) were collected during the autumn migration period in Poland. The concentrations of elements determined in this study exhibited high inter-species variability, reflecting the diversity in contamination levels depending on food resources used by specific bird groups. Many of the investigated individuals from different species showed exceeded levels of subclinical toxicity and moderate clinical poisoning due to Cd and Hg. Higher concentrations of As, Hg, and Ba and lower V concentrations were found in migratory birds as compared to sedentary birds. Species foraging in terrestrial habitat had different concentrations of some elements compared to aquatic and aquatic/terrestrial species. Some specific inter-species differences in hepatic elemental concentrations were found. Differences in elemental concentrations among various groups can primarily be attributed to their foraging guilds, with certain elements, particularly As, V, and Hg, playing a significant role in the dissimilarity of elemental concentrations between foraging habitat groups and migratory mode groups. The data collected confirmed the limited ability of As to enter ecosystem pathways. The results of this study contribute to understanding the year-round exposure of migratory birds to environmental contamination, which can have carry-over effects on their performance in wintering and breeding grounds.

Metal element-based adsorbents for phosphorus capture: Chaperone effect, performance and mechanism

Excessive phosphorus (P) enters the water bodies via wastewater discharges or agricultural runoff, triggering serious environmental problems such as eutrophication. In contrast, P as an irreplaceable key resource, presents notable supply-demand contradictions due to ineffective recovery mechanisms. Hence, constructing a system that simultaneously reduce P contaminants and effective recycling has profound theoretical and practical implications. Metal element-based adsorbents, including metal (hydro) oxides, layered double hydroxides (LDHs) and metal-organic frameworks (MOFs), exhibit a significant chaperone effect stemming from strong orbital hybridization between their intrinsic Lewis acid sites and P (Lewis base). This review aims to parse the structure-effect relationship between metal element-based adsorbents and P, and explores how to optimize the P removal properties. Special emphasis is given to the formation of the metal-P chemical bond, which not only depends on the type of metal in the adsorbent but also closely relates to its surface activity and pore structure. Then, we delve into the intrinsic mechanisms behind these adsorbents' remarkable adsorption capacity and precise targeting. Finally, we offer an insightful discussion of the prospects and challenges of metal element-based adsorbents in terms of precise material control, large-scale production, P-directed adsorption and effective utilization.

Divergent roles of IREG/Ferroportin transporters from the nickel hyperaccumulator Leucocroton havanensis

In response to our ever-increasing demand for metals, phytotechnologies are being developed to limit the environmental impact of conventional metal mining. However, the development of these technologies, which rely on plant species able to tolerate and accumulate metals, is partly limited by our lack of knowledge of the underlying molecular mechanisms. In this work, we aimed to better understand the role of metal transporters of the IRON REGULATED 1/FERROPORTIN (IREG/FPN) family from the nickel hyperaccumulator Leucocroton havanensis from the Euphorbiaceae family. Using transcriptomic data, we identified two homologous genes, LhavIREG1 and LhavIREG2, encoding divalent metal transporters of the IREG/FPN family. Both genes are expressed at similar levels in shoots, but LhavIREG1 shows higher expression in roots. The heterologous expression of these transporters in A. thaliana revealed that LhavIREG1 is localized to the plasma membrane, whereas LhavIREG2 is located on the vacuole. In addition, the expression of each gene induced a significant increase in nickel tolerance. Taken together, our data suggest that LhavIREG2 is involved in nickel sequestration in vacuoles of leaf cells, whereas LhavIREG1 is mainly involved in nickel translocation from roots to shoots, but could also be involved in metal sequestration in cell walls. Our results suggest that paralogous IREG/FPN transporters may play complementary roles in nickel hyperaccumulation in plants.

Early-stage growth and elemental composition patterns of Brassica napus L. in response to Cd-Zn contamination

Soil contamination caused by the presence of Cd and the excess amount of Zn is a widespread concern in agricultural areas, posing significant risks to the growth and development of crops. In this paper, the early-stage development and metal (Cd and Zn) accumulation potential of rapeseed (Brassica napus L.) grown under different metal application schemes were assessed by determining radicle and hypocotyl length and the micro- and macro elemental composition of plantlets after 24, 72, and 120 h. The results indicated that the single and co-application of Cd and Zn significantly reduced the radicle and hypocotyl lengths. Accumulation intensity for Cd and Zn was affected by Cd and the combination of Cd and Zn in the solution, respectively. In addition, both metals significantly influenced the tissue Mn and had a minor effect on Cu and Fe concentrations. Both Cd and Zn significantly affected macro element concentrations by decreasing tissue Ca and influencing K and Mg concentrations in a dose- and exposure time-dependent manner. These findings specify the short-term and support the long-term use of rapeseed in remediation processes. However, interactions of metals are crucial in determining the concentration patterns in tissues, which deserves more attention in future investigations.

The contribution of metal allergy to the failure of metal alloy implants, with special reference to titanium: Current knowledge and controversies

After almost three-quarters of a century during which contact dermatologists have often struggled to comprehend the relationship between metal allergy and failure of metal-alloy containing implant, it is possible to say that a relationship does exist, particularly for cobalt and chromium, but also for nickel. There is still debate as to whether allergy develops as a consequent of failure but thenceforth contributes to it, or whether sensitisation starts first and induces failure secondarily-opinion probably favours the first. Metal-on-polypropylene articulations were associated with few metal allergic problems but now are less favoured by orthopaedists due to plastic wear products causing osteolysis and pseudotumour formation through local inflammation. New metal alloys are regularly being introduced such that interested dermatologists need to stay on top of the situation. The jury is still out as to whether the recent favouring of titanium-containing alloys will confirm them to be more inert allergenically. Case reports do show some clinical reactions to titanium-containing implants and patch test series have inferred sometimes quite a high background rate of allergy, but interpretation must be tempered by the awareness that titanium salts on patch testing have a tendency to cause irritant reactions. Blood monitoring of metal ion values is now recommended in certain situations after joint replacement and increasing levels may be an indication that allergy with joint failure can develop, in which case patch testing is indicated, and suggested series are available. Predictive patch testing, whilst generally not recommended in the past, has been introduced into some protocols often by non-dermatologists, such that it is now needed for temporo-mandibular joint and Nuss bar insertion, and it can be anticipated that this may become more commonplace in the future. One of the major current deficits for patch testers is standardised guidance on which preparation or preparations to use for suspected titanium allergy. One suggestion is 0.5% titanium sulphate in petrolatum, though experience in at least one centre suggests the use of a battery of titanium salts might be desirable.

Quality improvement of images with metal artifact reduction using a noise recovery technique in computed tomography

In metal artifact reduction (MAR) in computed tomography (CT) based on projection data inpainting, X-ray photon noise has not been considered in the inpainting process. This study aims to assess the effectiveness of a MAR technique incorporating noise recovery in such projection data regions, compared with existing MAR techniques based on projection data normalization (NMAR), including one with frequency splitting (FSNMAR). Phantoms simulating hip prostheses and dental fillings were scanned using a 64-row multi slice CT scanner. The projection data was processed by NMAR and NMAR with noise recovery (NRNMAR); the processed data was sent back to the CT system for reconstruction. For the phantoms and clinical cases with hip prostheses and dental fillings, images were reconstructed without MAR, and with NMAR, NRNMAR, and FSNMAR (incorporated in the CT system). To validate the efficacy of noise recovery, noise power spectra (NPSs) were measured from the images of the hip prosthesis phantom with and without metals. The artifact index (AI) was compared between NRNMAR and FSNMAR. The resultant NPSs of NRNMAR were very similar to those of phantom images with no metals, endorsing the efficacy of noise recovery. The NMAR images had unnatural noise textures and FSNMAR caused additional streaks. NRNMAR exhibited some significant improvements in these respects: It reduced the AI by as much as 66.2-88.6% compared to FSNMAR, except for the case of a unilateral prosthesis. In conclusion, NRNMAR, which simply adds white noise to the projection data, would be effective in improving the quality of CT images with metal artifacts reduction.

Metal-organic framework integrated hydrogel bioreactor for smart detection of metal ions

Bioreactors with environment responsiveness for smart detection has attracted widespread interest. Bioreactors that operate in liquid have excellent reaction speed and sensitivity, and those that operate at a solid interface have unique portability and stability. However, bioreactors that can simultaneously take advantage of both properties are still limited. Here, we developed a metal-organic framework (MOF) integrated hydrogel bioreactor that can accommodate both solid and liquid properties by using a hydrogel as a quasi-liquid medium. To enhance the stability and intelligence of the hydrogel bioreactor, we have opted for the utilization of europium metal-organic framework (Eu-MOF) as the optical output to withstand long-term storage challenges, and DNA as the highly programmable substance for intelligent target response. On this basis, smart detection of metal ions and biological micro-molecules have been achieved. Notably, this quasi-liquid hydrogel bioreactor has effectively tackled the intrinsic issues of inadequate dispersion stability of Eu-MOF in liquid systems and poor stability of DNA against environmental interference. Moreover, this MOF integrated hydrogel bioreactor has been applied to the construction of a portable hydrogel bioreactor, which enables platform-free and arrayed target detection via a smartphone, providing a new perspective for further promoting the application of quasi-liquid hydrogel bioreactors and intelligent nanobiological sensors.

Acetylcholinesterase activity in muscle tissue of Norway lobster Nephrops norvegicus: Importance of body size, season, sex and naturally occurring metals

The aim of the present study was to determine the levels of acetylcholinesterase (AChE) activity in the tail muscle tissue of wild populations of Nephrops norvegicus from the Northern Adriatic, and correlate it to body size, seasons, sex and the content of mercury, arsenic, cadmium, lead and copper. The animals of both sexes were collected in spring and autumn from two relatively distant fishing grounds. A marked variability of muscle AChE activity was found (0.49 to 11.22 nmol/min/mg prot.), displaying the opposite seasonal trend between two sampling sites. Small, but significant negative correlation has been found between AChE activity and carapace length (rs = - 0.35, p < 0.05). Data reported here provide an essential baseline for future studies of neurotoxicity in crustaceans. The study highlights the necessity for continuous monitoring of potentially toxic metals in edible marine species to avoid possible repercussions of seafood consumption on human health.

The size of the femoral head does not influence metal ion levels after metal-on-polyethylene total hip arthroplasty: a five-year report from a randomized controlled trial

Aims

In metal-on-polyethylene (MoP) total hip arthroplasty (THA), large metal femoral heads have been used to increase stability and reduce the risk of dislocation. The increased size of the femoral head can, however, lead to increased taper corrosion, with the release of metal ions and adverse reactions. The aim of this study was to investigate the relationship between the size of the femoral head and the levels of metal ions in the blood in these patients.

Methods

A total of 96 patients were enrolled at two centres and randomized to undergo MoP THA using either a 32 mm metal head or a femoral head of between 36 mm and 44 mm in size, being the largest possible to fit the thinnest available polyethylene insert. The levels of metal ions and patient-reported outcome measures (Oxford Hip Score, University of California, Los Angeles Activity Scale) were recorded at two and five years postoperatively.

Results

At five years, the median levels of chromium, cobalt, and titanium were 0.5 μg/l (interquartile range (IQR) 0.50 to 0.62), 0.24 μg/l (IQR 0.18 to 0.30), and 1.16 μg/l (IQR 1.0 to 1.68) for the 32 mm group, and 0.5 μg/l (IQR 0.5 to 0.54), 0.23 μg/l (IQR 0.17 to 0.39), and 1.30 μg/l (IQR 1 to 2.05) for the 36 mm to 44 mm group, with no significant difference between the groups (p = 0.825, p = 1.000, p = 0.558). There were increased levels of metal ions at two years postoperatively in seven patients in the 32 mm group, compared with four in the 36 mm to 44 mm group, and at five years postoperatively in six patients in the 32 mm group, compared with seven in the 36 mm to 44 mm group. There was no significant difference in either the OHS (p = 0.665) or UCLA (p = 0.831) scores between patients with or without an increased level of metal ions.

Conclusion

In patients who underwent MoP THA, we found no differences in the levels of metal ions five years postoperatively between those with a femoral head of 32 mm and those with a femoral head of between 36 mm and 44 mm, and no corrosion-related revisions. As taper corrosion can start after five years, there remains a need for longer-term studies investigating the relationship between the size of the femoral head size and corrosion in patients undergoing MoP THA.

Immunotoxicity of stainless-steel nanoparticles obtained after 3D printing

This study aims to investigate the in vitro effects of nanoparticles (NPs) produced during the selective laser melting (SLM) of 316 L stainless steel metal powder on the immune response in a human blood model. Experimental data did not reveal effect on viability of 316 L NPs for the tested doses. Functional immune assays showed a significant immunosuppressive effect of NPs. There was moderate stimulation (117%) of monocyte phagocytic activity without significant changes in phagocytic activity and respiratory burst of granulocytes. A significant dose-dependent increase in the levels of the pro-inflammatory cytokine TNF-a was found in blood cultures treated with NPs. On the contrary, IL-8 chemokine levels were significantly suppressed. The levels of the pro-inflammatory cytokine IL-6 were reduced by only a single concentration of NPs. These new findings can minimise potential health risks and indicate the need for more research in this area.

Self-controllable proteinic antibacterial coating with bacteria-triggered antibiotic release for prevention of periprosthetic infection

Periprosthetic infection is a devastating postimplantation complication in which a biofilm layer harboring invasive microorganisms forms around orthopedic implants, leading to severe implant failure and patient morbidity. Despite the development of several infection-triggered antibiotic release approaches, most current antibacterial coatings are susceptible to undesired antibiotic leakage or mechanical disintegration during prosthesis installation. Herein, we propose a self-controllable proteinic antibacterial coating capable of both long-lasting adherence onto titanium implant substrates over the implant fixation period and instantaneous bacterial eradication. Importantly, the pH-dependent reversible metal coordination of mussel adhesive protein (MAP) enabled bacterial concentration-dependent antibiotic delivery in response to infection-induced acidification. In addition, the MAP coating exhibited superior self-healable adhesive properties and scratch resistance, which enabled to avert issues associated with mechanical damages, including peeling and cracking, often occurring in conventional implant coating systems. The gentamicin-loaded MAP coating exhibited complete inhibition of bacterial growth in vivo against Staphylococcus aureus penetrations during implantation surgery (immediate infection) and even 4 weeks after implantation (delayed infection). Thus, our antibiotic-loaded MAP hydrogel coating can open new avenues for self-defensive antibiotic prophylaxis to achieve instant and sustainable bacteriocidal activity in orthopedic prostheses. © 2017 Elsevier Inc. Selective optical sensing of iron(III) ions in an aqueous medium by benzochromone-based Schiff base and its application on test strips

In this work, we designed and synthesized a novel, simple, low-cost, and effective chromone-based Schiff base ligand (HL) and its application as a chemosensor for Fe3+ detection. The structure of the synthesized sensor bears carboxylic, azomethine, and carbonyl groups which act as chelating sites for the detection of Fe3+ ions. The chemosensor HL exhibited highly selective detection of Fe3+ via a significant colour change from yellow to brown. The colour change is due to the ligand-to-metal charge-transfer (LMCT) mechanism. The sensor (HL) was characterized using UV-Vis, FTIR, NMR (1H- and 13C), and mass spectroscopy. The ligand solubility, detection condition, and sensitivity assessment suggested optimal use of DMF-water (9:1 v/v) as a working solvent at pH 7.0. Among a list of 15 metal ions screened, HL was highly selective, with instant response, towards Fe3+ ions without significant interferences with the other metal ions. The complexation ratio and association constants of HL to Fe3+ was determined by Job's plot and Benesi-Hildebrand methods, and were 2:1 and 2.24 × 103 M-1, respectively, with a detection limit of 2.86 μM. The HL probe was also applied to detect Fe3+ in real samples with acceptable performance. The simple test strips have been successfully developed and applied to the visual monitoring of Fe3+ ions with a detection limit of 68 µM. The DFT was used to examine the best interaction mode of HL with Fe metal to be Fe(III)-L or Fe(III)-2L. The chemical-reactivity and molecular electrostatic optional were figured to predict the interaction behaviour of the tested compounds.

Comparative analysis of metal pollution in the Atlantic Ocean and Mediterranean Sea: insights from Anemonia sulcata study

In this study, we investigated metal concentrations in Anemonia sulcata specimens from various locations in the Atlantic Ocean and the Mediterranean Sea. A total of 84 individuals were sampled from specific zones, and their tissue samples were processed for metal analysis using Inductively Coupled Plasma Optical Emission Spectrometry (ICP-OES). The results revealed notable differences in metal concentrations among the studied regions. The Atlantic Ocean and the Mediterranean Sea were found to have distinct patterns of marine pollution, influenced by a complex interplay of geographical, demographic, industrial, and environmental policy factors. Conversely, the semi-enclosed Mediterranean Sea has a lower natural dilution capacity, leading to the accumulation and prolonged presence of pollutants. Population density and industrial activities in coastal areas play a significant role in pollution disparities between the Mediterranean Sea and the Atlantic Ocean. The Mediterranean coasts, with higher population densities and intensive industrial operations, experience greater strain on marine ecosystems due to increased pollution sources. Additionally, environmental policies and management approaches differ between the two regions, contributing to variations in pollution response and regulation.

Bio-mordants: a review

Due to the increasing pressure on environmentally friendly approaches and sustainable production processes, the textile dyeing industry has focused on natural colorants. Thus, the use of bio-mordants, which are biological materials, has become widespread as an alternative to metal salts, most of which are non-ecological, used in the application processes of natural colorants. In natural dyeing, dyers want to use mordant substances in the dyeing processes in order to both expand the color spectrum and improve the fastness properties. Conventional metal salts used in natural dyeing are made up of metallic ions, which, when released into the environment as wastewater effluent at the end of the dyeing process, cause major damage to the ecosystem. Many researchers have thought about using mordants derived from natural sources to address the environmental problem. This article is a review of the investigation of natural mordants used instead of metallic mordants in the process of coloring various textile materials with natural dyestuff sources. It has been determined that many substances, most of them herbal materials, are used as mordants. In this review, mordants, except for conventional metal salts, are examined under three main groups for a better understanding. These groups are as follows: (i) natural or bio-mordants, (ii) oil mordants, and (iii) new-generation and non-vegetable-based mordants. Here, researchers will find an overview of the most recent developments in green mordants as well as application techniques for a variety of mordants.

[Association of metal/metalloids exposure with abnormal liver function among occupational population in a mining area of Hunan Province:a prospective study]

OBJECTIVE

To investigate the association of metals/metalloids exposure with risk of liver disfunction among occupational population in Hunan Province, and to explore the potential dose-response relationship.

METHODS

In 2017, a mining area in Hunan Province was chosen as the research site, and eligible workers were recruited as study subjects. General demographic characteristics, levels of 23 metals/metalloids in plasma and urine, and liver function index(total bilirubin(TBIL), alanine amino transferase(ALT), globulin(GLB) and γ-glutamyl transferase(GGT)) were obtained by questionnaire, physical examination and laboratory tests. Participants were followed up in 2018, 2019 and 2020 respectively. Cox proportional risk model was used to evaluate the relationship between metal/metalloids exposure and risk of liver disfunction, and dose-response relationship curves were plotted by using the restricted cubic spline function.

RESULTS

A total of 891 employees were recruited in the study, 576(65.0%)were aged ≤45 years, 832(93.4%) were male and 530(59.5%) worked as smelters. After adjusting various factors such as age, gender, BMI, type of work, education, smoking, alcohol consumption, diet, stress, medical history, exercise and tea consumption, positive correlations were found between plasma tungsten(HR=4.90, 95%CI 1.17-20.48) and urinary barium(HR=1.07, 95%CI 1.02-1.12) levels with abnormally elevated TBIL levels. Additionally, a significant association was observed between plasma thallium and the risk of elevated ALT levels(HR=11.15, 95%CI 1.97-63.29).

CONCLUSION

Plasma tungsten and thallium, along with barium found in urine, are risk factors for the development of abnormally elevated liver function indices in occupational groups.

Metal(loid)s Profile of Four Traditional Ethiopian Teff Brands: Geographic Origin Discrimination

Among the most renowned Ethiopian food crops, teff (Eragrostis tef (Zucc.)Trotter) is the most nutritious and gluten-free cereal. Because of the increase in demand for teff, it is necessary to establish geographic origin authentication of traditional teff brands based on multi-element fingerprint. For this purpose, a total of 60 teff samples were analysed using Inductively Coupled Plasma Mass Spectrometry (ICP-MS). Accuracy of the laboratory procedure was verified by the analysis of rice flour standard reference material (NIST SRM 1568b). In this context, four traditional teff brands (Ada'a, Ginchi, Gojam and Tulu Bolo) were analytically characterized using multi-element fingerprint and further treated statistically using linear discriminant analysis (LDA). Due to obvious extrinsic Fe, Al and V contamination, these elements were excluded from the discriminant model. Five elements (Cu, Mo, Se, Sr, and Zn) significantly contributed to discriminate the geographical origin of white teff. On the other hand, Mn, Mo, Se and Sr were used as discriminant variables for brown teff. LDA revealed 90 and 100% correct classifications for white and brown teff, respectively. Overall, multi-element fingerprint coupled with LDA can be considered a suitable tool for geographic origin discrimination of traditional teff brands.

Diversity and distribution of iron-oxidising bacteria belonging to Gallionellaceae in different sites of a hydroelectric power plant

Iron (Fe) is the fourth most abundant element on the planet, and iron-oxidising bacteria (FeOB) play an important role in the biogeochemical cycle of this metal in nature. FeOB stands out as Fe oxidisers in microaerophilic environments, and new members of this group have been increasingly discussed in the literature, even though their isolation can still be challenging. Among these bacteria is the Gallionellaceae family, mainly composed of neutrophilic FeOB, highlighting Gallionella ferruginea, and nitrite-oxidiser genera. In the previous metagenomic study of the biofilm and sediments of the cooling system from the Irapé hydroelectric power plant (HPP-Irapé), 5% of the total bacteria sequences were related to Gallionellaceae, being 99% unclassified at genus level. Thus, in the present study, a phylogenetic tree based on this family was constructed, in order to search for shared and unique Gallionellaceae signatures in a deep phylogenetic level affiliation and correlated them with geomorphologic characteristics. The results revealed that Gallionella and Ferrigenium were ubiquitous reflecting their ability to adapt to various locations in the power plant. The cave was considered a hotspot for neutrophilic FeOB since it harboured most of the Gallionellaceae diversity. Microscopic biosignatures were detected only in the CS1 sample, which presented abundance of the stalk-forming Ferriphaselus and of the sheath-forming Crenothrix. Further studies are required to provide more detailed insights on Gallionellaceae distribution and diversity patterns in hydroelectric power plants, particularly its biotechnological potential in this industry.

Metal and metalloid maternal transfer in a newborn West Indian manatee (Trichechus manatus) two years after the northeastern oil spill disaster of 2019 in Brazil

A large-scale oil spill along the northeastern Brazilian coast in 2019-2020 severely impacted primary manatee habitats in Brazil. This study aimed to assess metal and metalloid contamination in a dead manatee calf found following this oil spill. Several elements were detected, including chromium, iron, nickel, lead, and vanadium, which are crude oil components, and thallium, a component of dispersants used to degrade and dissipate crude oil. The presence of these contaminants in the manatee calf is indicative of maternal exposure, metabolism, and newborn transference via placenta and lactation. This is the first report of mother-calf metal transfer in manatees, highlighting the species' vulnerability and potential long-term population dynamics effects, and the first report for several metals and metalloids in these animals, laying the foundation for future research efforts. These findings highlight the urgent need for continued environmental monitoring, ecotoxicological assessments, and conservation initiatives.

Differential accumulation of metals in the lacustrine and fluvial Alpine bullheads (Cottus poecilopus) and recovery of fish from metal contamination after a flash flood

The spatiotemporal distribution and transport of mercury, zinc, molybdenum, rubidium, and strontium from alpine terrestrial ecosystems to alpine lake and mountain stream populations of Cottus poecilopus were investigated. Metals were measured for 66 wild fish collected from different lakes and Javorinka stream across. Mercury was measured in the pectoral fins, other elements in the skull. Bullheads contained more metals in the alpine lakes than in the mountain stream. In particular, mercury and zinc concentrations in lake bullheads were 6 and 2.5 times higher, respectively, than those of stream-dwelling fish. New data were generated on metal bioaccumulation in fish of understudied West Carpathian alpine lake environments. In July 2018, a major flood occurred in the area of the Javorinka. Already then, the mercury content in bullheads increased significantly. Bioaccumulation of mercury in fish occurred very quickly after the flood and was also significant in the following 2019. Then, the concentrations of mercury quickly decreased up to 70% in 2021-2022. Average concentrations of molybdenum and rubidium in bullheads in the stream rapidly declined in the year following the flood disturbance, but within less than 2 years, the metal levels stabilized at about the same level as in 2017 prior the flood. Strontium concentrations in fish dropped rapidly immediately after the flood, increased in the following years, and dropped again after 4 years, suggesting that many more factors are influencing strontium bioaccumulation in fish that are comparable in magnitude to the flood. The most serious warning seems to be the absence of biogenic zinc. The average concentration in the Alpine bullheads population in the stream has declined by 70% in less than 5 years and is steadily declining. An important result of this study is the demonstration that disturbance by a single factor (heavy rainfall and flooding) has a clear and timely effect on average metal concentrations in the fish population.

Single crown vs. composite for glass fiber post-retained restorations: An 8-year randomized clinical trial

OBJECTIVES

This study aimed to compare the success and survival rates of metal-ceramic crowns and composite resin restorations applied in root filled teeth that received a glass fiber post.

METHODS

A prospective, randomized controlled trial, with equivalent parallel groups was designed. Eighty-two teeth were randomly allocated to the metal-ceramic or composite resin groups. Multivariate Cox regression analysis with shared frailty for patients and Kaplan-Meier curves were performed using success and survival rates (p<0.05).

RESULTS

Seventy-five post-retained restorations (34 metal-ceramic crowns and 41 composite restorations) in 62 patients were analyzed. The median follow-up was 8.1 years [IQR 4.0-9.9]. Twenty-seven failures were observed. Twenty-two failures (81.5 %) were observed in the composite resin group, of which six (27.3 %) were not repairable. Five failures (18.5 %) were observed in the metal-ceramic crown group, of which three (66.6 %) were non-repairable. The cumulative success rate at 8 years was 85.0 % for crowns (AFR=1.31 %) and 43.2 % for composite resins (AFR=6.58 %), while the survival rate was 93.8 % for crowns (AFR=0.52 %) and 97.6 % for composite resins (AFR=0.20 %). Considering the success rates, adjusted multivariate Cox regression showed that composite resin had a Hazard Ratio of 5.07 (95 %CI, 1.99-12.89) greater than the metal-ceramic crown. No significant difference in the failure risk was observed when the survival rates were considered (HR=0.38, 95 %CI (0.10 - 1.44), p = 0.156). Co-variables did not affect the success and survival rates (p>0.05).

CONCLUSIONS

Metal-ceramic crowns showed a higher success rate than composite restorations. The survival rates were similar, but composite restorations presented a higher need for repairs.

CLINICAL SIGNIFICANCE

Post-retained composite restorations may need more reinterventions during the lifecycle, although more preservation of sound tooth structure is expected with a large restoration of resin post-and-core. These aspects have to be discussed with the patient for decision-making planning.

A review on spent Mn-containing Li-ion batteries: Recovery technologies, challenges, and future perspectives

Mn-containing Li-ion batteries have become primary power sources for electronic devices and electric vehicles because of their high-energy density, extended cycle life, low cost, and heightened safety. In recent years, Li-ion batteries (LIBs) have undergone rapid updates, paralleling the swift advancement of the lithium battery industry, resulting in a growing accumulation of LIB scraps annually, necessitating comprehensive recovery strategies. This article reviews the recent progress in recovering spent Mn-containing LIBs (SM-LIBs), specifically focusing on LiMn2O4 and ternary LiCoxMnyNizO2 (NCM). Initially, the study analyzes the current resource profile of SM-LIBs and elucidates their service mechanisms. Subsequently, the study explores the recovery of SM-LIBs, discussing various methods such as the hydrometallurgical approach, combined pyrolytic treatment-wet leaching process, bioleaching pathway, and electrochemical extraction. These discussions include recovery processes, reaction principles, and technological features. In addition, this study evaluates the potential applications of these recovery technologies, considering aspects such as complexity, economic viability, energy consumption, environmental sustainability, and scalability. Finally, it summarizes the challenges associated with the comprehensive recovery and resource utilization of SM-LIBs and offers insights into future directions.

Cardiac function may be compromised in patients with elevated blood cobalt levels secondary to metal-on-metal hip implants

Aims

Elevated blood cobalt levels secondary to metal-on-metal (MoM) hip arthroplasties are a suggested risk factor for developing cardiovascular complications including cardiomyopathy. Clinical studies assessing patients with MoM hips using left ventricular ejection fraction (LVEF) have found conflicting evidence of cobalt-induced cardiomyopathy. Global longitudinal strain (GLS) is an echocardiography measurement known to be more sensitive than LVEF when diagnosing early cardiomyopathies. The extent of cardiovascular injury, as measured by GLS, in patients with elevated blood cobalt levels has not previously been examined.

Methods

A total of 16 patients with documented blood cobalt ion levels above 13 µg/l (13 ppb, 221 nmol/l) were identified from a regional arthroplasty database. They were matched with eight patients awaiting hip arthroplasty. All patients underwent echocardiography, including GLS, investigating potential signs of cardiomyopathy.

Results

Patients with MoM hip arthroplasties had a mean blood cobalt level of 29 µg/l (495 nmol/l) compared to 0.01 µg/l (0.2 nmol/l) in the control group. GLS readings were available for seven of the MoM cohort, and were significantly lower when compared with controls (-15.5% vs -18% (MoM vs control); p = 0.025)). Pearson correlation demonstrated that GLS significantly correlated with blood cobalt level (r = 0.8521; p < 0.001). However, there were no differences or correlations for other echocardiography measurements, including LVEF (64.3% vs 63.7% (MoM vs control); p = 0.845).

Conclusion

This study supports the hypothesis that patients with elevated blood cobalt levels above 13 µg/l in the presence of a MoM hip implant may have impaired cardiac function compared to a control group of patients awaiting hip arthroplasty. It is the first study to use the more sensitive parameter of GLS to assess for any cardiac contractile dysfunction in patients with a MoM hip implant and a normal LVEF. Larger studies should be performed to determine the potential of GLS as a predictor of cardiac complications in patients with MoM arthroplasties.

Cardiotoxicity and ROS Protection Assessment of three Structure-Related N-Acylhydrazones with Potential for the Treatment of Neurodegenerative Diseases

The senescence process is associated with accumulated oxidative damage and increased metal concentration in the heart and brain. Besides, abnormal metal-protein interactions have also been linked with the development of several conditions, including Alzheimer's and Parkinson's diseases. Over the years we have described a series of structure-related compounds with different activities towards models of such diseases. In this work, we evaluated the potential of three N-acylhydrazones (INHHQ: 8-hydroxyquinoline-2-carboxaldehyde isonicotinoyl hydrazone, HPCIH: pyridine-2-carboxaldehyde isonicotinoyl hydrazone and X1INH: 1-methyl-1H-imidazole-2-carboxaldehyde isonicotinoyl hydrazone) to prevent oxidative stress in cellular models, with the dual intent of being active on this pathway and also to confirm their lack of cardiotoxicity as an important step in the drug development process, especially considering that the target population often presents cardiovascular comorbidity. The 8-hydroxyquinoline-contaning compound, INHHQ, exhibits a significant cardioprotective effect against hydrogen peroxide and a robust antioxidant activity. However, this compound is the most toxic to the studied cell models and seems to induce oxidative damage on its own. Interestingly, although not possessing a phenol group in its structure, the new-generation 1-methylimidazole derivative X1INH showed a cardioprotective tendency towards H9c2 cells, demonstrating the importance of attaining a compromise between activity and intrinsic cytotoxicity when developing a drug candidate.

Advances in Fe-modified lignocellulosic biochar: Impact of iron species and characteristics on wastewater treatment

Lignocellulosic biomass is an attractive feedstock for biochar production owing to its high abundance and renewability. Various modified biochars have been extensively studied for wastewater treatment to improve the physical and chemical properties of lignocellulosic biochar (L-BC). Particularly, Fe-modified L-BCs have garnered attention owing to the abundance and eco-friendliness of Fe and the outstanding ability to remove various organic and inorganic contaminants via adsorption, oxidation, reduction, and catalytic reactions. Different iron species (e.g., Fe(0), Fe (hydr)oxide, Fe sulfide, and Fe-Metal) are formed during the preparation of Fe-L-BCs, which can completely differentiate the physical and chemical properties of BCs. This review discusses the advances in the synthesis of different Fe-L-BCs, specific changes in the physical and chemical properties of Fe-L-BCs upon Fe addition, and their impacts on wastewater treatment. The results of this review can demonstrate the unique advantages and drawbacks of Fe-L-BCs for the removal of different types of pollutants.

Metal-free carbon-based anode for electrochemical degradation of tetracycline and metronidazole in wastewater

Degradation of antibiotics through electrocatalytic oxidation has recently been comprehended as a promising strategy in wastewater treatment. Herein, nitrogen and sulphur doped graphene oxide (N,S-rGO) nanosheets were synthesized and employed as metal-free anodic material for electrochemical degradation of antibiotics, viz. metronidazole (MNZ) and tetracycline (TC). The synthesized anodic material was characterized using various spectral techniques and further the electrochemical behaviour of N,S-rGO was thoroughly examined. Thereafter, the N,S-rGO material was then employed as the anode material towards the electrocatalytic degradation of antibiotics. Parameters such as initial concentration of the antibiotics and current densities were varied and their effect towards the degradation of MNZ and TC were probed. Notably, the N,S-rGO based anode has shown impressive removal efficiency of 99% and 98.5%, after 120 min of reaction time for MNZ and TC, respectively, under optimized conditions. The obtained results including the kinetic parameters, removal efficiency and electrical efficiency ensure that the prepared anodic material has huge prospective towards real-time application for removal of antibiotics from water.

Performance and mechanism of biochar@FeMg-LDH for efficient activation of persulfate for degradation of 2, 4-dichlorophenol in groundwater

Groundwater environments are complex, and traditional advanced oxidation technologies mainly based on free radicals have limitations such as poor selectivity and low interference resistance, making it difficult to efficiently degrade target pollutants in groundwater. Therefore, we developed a sludge-based biochar-supported FeMg-layered double hydroxide catalyst (BC@FeMg-LDH) for the catalytic degradation of 2, 4-dichlorophenol (2, 4-DCP) using persulfate (PDS) as an oxidant. The removal efficiency of the catalyst exceeded 95%, showing high oxidation activity in a wide pH range while being almost unaffected by reducing substances and ions in the environment. Meanwhile, under neutral conditions, the leaching of metal ions from BC@FeMg-LDH was minimal, thereby eliminating the risk of secondary pollution. According to quenching experiments and electron paramagnetic resonance spectroscopy, the main active species during BC@FeMg-LDH/PDS degradation of 2, 4-DCP is 1O2, indicating a non-radical reaction mechanism dominated by 1O2. Characterization techniques, including X-ray photoelectron spectroscopy and Fourier transform infrared spectroscopy, revealed that the carbonyl (C = O) and metal hydroxyl (M-OH) groups on the material surface were the main reactive sites mediating 1O2 generation. The 1O2 generation mechanism during the reaction involved ketone-like activation of carbonyl groups on the biochar surface and complexation of hydroxyl groups on the material surface with PDS, resulting in the formation of O2·- and further generation of 1O2. 1O2 exhibited high selectivity toward electron-rich organic compounds such as 2, 4-DCP and demonstrated strong interference resistance in complex groundwater environments. Therefore, BC@FeMg-LDH holds promising applications for the remediation of organic-contaminated groundwater.

Uptake and distribution of metal(loid)s in two rare species of saltmarsh, blackseed samphire, Tecticornia pergranulata, and narrow-leafed wilsonia, Wilsonia backhousei, in New South Wales, Australia

The uptake and distribution of copper, zinc, arsenic, and lead was examined in two rare Australian saltmarsh species, Tecticornia pergranulata and Wilsonia backhousei. The bioconcentration factors and translocation factors were generally much lower than one, except for the Zn translocation factors for T. pergranulata. When compared to other Australian saltmarsh taxa, these species generally accumulated the lowest levels observed among taxa, especially in terms of their BCFs. Essential metals tended to be regulated, while non-essential metals increased in concentration with dose during transport among compartments, a pattern not previously observed in Australian saltmarsh taxa. The uptake of metals into roots was mainly explained by total sediment metal loads as well as more acidic pH, increased soil organic matter, and decreased salinity. The low uptake and limited translocation observed in these rare taxa may offer a competitive advantage for their establishment and survival in the last urbanised populations, where legacy metal contamination acts as a selective pressure.

Integrative chemical, physiological, and metabolomics analyses reveal nanospecific phytotoxicity of metal nanoparticles

The increasing application of metal nanoparticles (NPs) via agrochemicals and sewage sludge results in non-negligible phytotoxicological risks. Herein, the potential phytotoxicity of ZnO and CuO NPs on wheat was determined using integrative chemical, physiological, and metabolomics analyses, in comparison to Zn2+ and Cu2+. It was found that ZnO or CuO NPs had a stronger inhibitory effect on wheat growth than Zn2+ or Cu2+. After exposure to ZnO or CuO NPs, wheat seedlings accumulated significantly higher levels of Zn or Cu than the corresponding Zn2+ or Cu2+ treatments, indicating the active uptake of NPs via wheat root. TEM analysis further confirmed the intake of NPs. Moreover, ZnO or CuO NPs exposure altered micronutrients (Fe, Mn, Cu, and Zn) accumulation in the tissues and decreased the activities of antioxidant enzymes. The metabolomics analysis identified 312, 357, 145, and 188 significantly changed metabolites (SCMs) in wheat root exposed to ZnO NPs, CuO NPs, Zn2+, and Cu2+, respectively. Most SCMs were nano-specific to ZnO (80%) and CuO NPs (58%), suggesting greater metabolic reprogramming by NPs than metal ions. Overall, nanospecific toxicity dominated the phytotoxicity of ZnO and CuO NPs, and our results provide a molecular perspective on the phytotoxicity of metal oxide NPs.

Fabrication of maleic anhydride-acrylamide copolymer based sodium alginate hydrogel for elimination of metals ions and dyes contaminants from polluted water

The study explores the synergy of biobased polymers and hydrogels for water purification. Polymer nanomaterial's, synthesized by combining acrylamide copolymer with maleic anhydride, were integrated into sodium alginate biopolymer using an eco-friendly approach. Crosslinking agents, calcium chloride and glutaraladehyde, facilitated seamless integration, ensuring non-toxicity, high adsorption performance, and controlled capacity. This innovative combination presents a promising solution for clean and healthy water supplies, addressing the critical need for sustainable environmental practices in water purification. In addition, the polymer sodium alginate hydrogel (MAH@AA-P/SA/H) underwent characterization via the use of several analytical procedures, such as FTIR, XPS, SEM, EDX and XRD. Adsorption studies were conducted on metals and dyes in water, and pollutant removal methods were explored. We investigated several variables (such as pH, starting concentration, duration, and absorbent quantity) affect a material's capacity to be adsorbed. Moreover, the maximum adsorption towards Cu2+ is 754 mg/g while for Cr6+ metal ions are 738 mg/g, while the adsorption towards Congo Red and Methylene Blue dye are 685 mg/g and 653 mg/g correspondingly, within 240 min. Adsorption results were further analyzed using kinetic and isothermal models, which showed that MAH@AA-P/SA/H adsorption is governed by a chemisorption process. Hence, the polymer prepared from sodium alginate hydrogel (MAH@AA-P/SA/H) has remarkable properties as a versatile material for the significantly elimination of harmful contaminants from dirty water.

Associations between brake and tire wear-related PM2.5 metal components, particulate oxidative stress potential, and autism spectrum disorder in Southern California

BACKGROUND

Air pollution is a global health concern, with fine particulate matter (PM2.5) constituents posing potential risks to human health, including children's neurodevelopment. Here we investigated associations between exposure during pregnancy and infancy to specific traffic-related PM2.5 components with Autism Spectrum Disorder (ASD) diagnosis.

METHODS

For exposure assessment, we estimated PM2.5 components related to traffic exposure (Barium [Ba] as a marker of brake dust and Zinc [Zn] as a tire wear marker, Black Carbon [BC]) and oxidative stress potential (OSP) markers (Hydroxyl Radical [OPOH] formation, Dithiothreitol activity [OPDTT], reactive oxygen species [ROS]) modeled with land use regression with co-kriging based on an intensive air monitoring campaign. We assigned exposures to a cohort of 444,651 children born in Southern California between 2016 and 2019, among whom 11,466 ASD cases were diagnosed between 2018 and 2022, Odds ratios (ORs) and 95% confidence intervals (CIs) were obtained with logistic regression for single pollutant and PM2.5 mass co-adjusted models, also adjusting for sociodemographic characteristics.

RESULTS

Among PM2.5 components, we found the strongest positive association with ASD for our brake wear marker Ba (ORper IQR = 1.29, 95 % CI: 1.24, 1.34). This was followed by an increased risk for all PM2.5 oxidative stress potential markers; the strongest association was with ROS formation (ORper IQR = 1.22, 95 % CI: 1.18, 1.25). PM2.5 mass was linked to ASD in Hispanic and Black children, but not White children, while traffic-related PM2.5 and OSP markers increased ASD risk across all groups. In neighborhoods with the lowest socioeconomic status (SES), associations with ASD were stronger for all examined pollutants compared to higher SES areas.

CONCLUSIONS

Our findings suggest that brake wear-related PM2.5 and PM2.5 OSP are associated with ASD diagnosis in Southern California. These results suggest that strategies aimed at reducing the public health impacts of PM2.5 need to consider specific sources.

Transformable Magnetic Liquid-Metal Nanoplatform for Intracellular Drug Delivery and MR Imaging-Guided Microwave Thermochemotherapy

Improved techniques for the administration of chemotherapeutic drugs are required to enhance tumor therapy efficacy and reduce the side effects of chemotherapy due to insufficient targeting and limited intratumoral drug release. Controlled drug delivery systems combined with thermotherapy are expected to play an important role in personalized tumor therapy. Herein, a novel microwave-responsive transformable magnetic liquid-metal (MLM) nanoplatform is designed for effective endosomal escape that facilitates intracellular drug delivery and enhanced anticancer therapy. The MLM nanoplatform exhibits a sensitive magnetic resonance imaging function for imaging-guided therapy and brilliant synergistic effects of chemotherapy with microwave thermal therapy to kill tumor cells. Once endocytosed by targeted tumor cells, the deep penetration of microwave energy can be absorbed by the MLM nanoplatform to convert heat and reactive oxygen species, which induces the shape transformation from nanospheres to large rods, resulting in the physical disruption of the endosomal membrane for intracellular drug release. Furthermore, the MLM nanoplatform synergistic therapy could activate immunomodulatory effects by M1 macrophage polarization and T cell infiltration, thus inhibiting tumor growth and lung metastasis. This work based on microwave-driven transformable magnetic liquid-metal nanoplatform provides novel ways to precisely control drug delivery and high-efficiency cancer therapy.

Comprehensive Technology for Recycling and Regenerating Materials from Spent Lithium Iron Phosphate Battery

The lithium iron phosphate (LFP) battery has been widely used in electric vehicles and energy storage for its good cyclicity, high level of safety, and low cost. The massive application of LFP battery generates a large number of spent batteries. Recycling and regenerating materials from spent LFP batteries has been of great concern because it can significantly recover valuable metals and protect the environment. This paper aims to critically assess the latest technical information available on the echelon utilization and recycling of spent LFP batteries. First, it focuses on the progress of disassembly, evaluation and detection, regrouping, and application in echelon utilization. Then, the recycling technologies, including pretreatment, direct repair, and material regeneration, of spent LFPs are summarized. Finally, the paper proposes some challenges in the echelon utilization and recycling of spent LFP batteries, and concludes with recommendations for an intelligent, refined, and clean LFP battery circulation system that are required to ensure the sustainable development of spent LFP battery recycling.

Soil microbial communities' contributions to soil ecosystem multifunctionality in the natural restoration of abandoned metal mines

On a global scale, the restoration of metal mine ecosystem functions is urgently required, and soil microorganisms play an important role in this process. Conventional studies frequently focused on the relationship between individual functions and their drivers; however, ecosystem functions are multidimensional, and considering any given function in isolation ignores the trade-offs and interconnectedness between functions, which complicates obtaining a comprehensive understanding of ecosystem functions. To elucidate the relationships between soil microorganisms and the ecosystem multifunctionality (EMF) of metal mines, this study investigated natural restoration of metal mines, evaluated the EMF, and used high-throughput sequencing to explore the bacterial and fungal communities as well as their influence on EMF. Bacterial community diversity and composition were more sensitive to mine restoration than fungal community. Bacterial diversity exhibited redundancy in improving N-P-K-S multifunctionality; however, rare bacterial taxa including Dependentiae, Spirochaetes, and WPS-2 were important for metal multifunctionality. Although no clear relationship between fungal diversity and EMF was observed, the abundance of Glomeromycota had a significant effect on the three EMF categories (N-P-K-S, carbon, and metal multifunctionality). Previous studies confirmed a pronounced positive association between microbial diversity and multifunctionality; however, the relationship between microbial diversity and multifunctionality differs among functions' categories. In contrast, the presence of critical microbial taxa exerted stronger effects on mine multifunctionality.

In-vivo integration of soft neural probes through high-resolution printing of liquid electronics on the cranium

Current soft neural probes are still operated by bulky, rigid electronics mounted to a body, which deteriorate the integrity of the device to biological systems and restrict the free behavior of a subject. We report a soft, conformable neural interface system that can monitor the single-unit activities of neurons with long-term stability. The system implements soft neural probes in the brain, and their subsidiary electronics which are directly printed on the cranial surface. The high-resolution printing of liquid metals forms soft neural probes with a cellular-scale diameter and adaptable lengths. Also, the printing of liquid metal-based circuits and interconnections along the curvature of the cranium enables the conformal integration of electronics to the body, and the cranial circuit delivers neural signals to a smartphone wirelessly. In the in-vivo studies using mice, the system demonstrates long-term recording (33 weeks) of neural activities in arbitrary brain regions. In T-maze behavioral tests, the system shows the behavior-induced activation of neurons in multiple brain regions.

Facile cost-effective green synthesis of carbon dots: selective detection of biologically relevant metal ions and synergetic efficiency for treatment of cancer

A facile cost-effective green synthesis approach has been used to synthesize carbon-dot (CDs) from the Kernel part of theAzadirachta Indicaseeds and investigated their fluorescent and metal ions sensing capability and also used for the delivery of drugs. Metallic ions such as Ca2+, K+, Na+, Fe3+,and Zn2+which are biologically important for many reactions and are selectively detected through the novel CDs. The resultant dot size of CDs (∼4 nm) is useful to eliminate the 'Achilles heel' problems, which is associated with the Zn2+in the body and its detection is a very challenging task. It is found that the sensitivity of CDs for the detection of Zn2+can be regulated by using different solvents. These CDs can also be used as a sensing probe for the selective detection of Fe3+at a very low concentration of solution (∼5 μM). The synthesis method of CDs reported here is cost-effective, very fast and it is highly selective towards Fe3+and Zn2+. Due to the fast response capability of these CDs, logic gate operation is achieved and it provides a new understanding to construct potential next-generation molecular devices for the detection of different biomolecules with high selectivity. Additionally, these CDs are biocompatible against normal healthy cells, capable of loading small biomolecules and drugs due to their porous nature, and exhibited potential impact for breast cancer therapy. It is observed that a significant synergic therapeutic effect of CDs loaded with doxorubicin against breast cancer cells is very promising. Thus, the CDs reported herein in this work have been synthesized through a green synthesis approach and can be used as a molecular probe for the detection of metal ions as well as for drug delivery applications.

Recent progress of metal-organic framework-based nanozymes with oxidoreductase-like activity

Nanozymes, a class of synthetic nanomaterials possessing enzymatic catalytic properties, exhibit distinct advantages such as exceptional stability and cost-effectiveness. Among them, metal-organic framework (MOF)-based nanozymes have garnered significant attention due to their large specific surface area, tunable pore size and uniform structure. MOFs are porous crystalline materials bridged by inorganic metal ions/clusters and organic ligands, which hold immense potential in the fields of catalysis, sensors and drug carriers. The combination of MOFs with diverse nanomaterials gives rise to various types of MOF-based nanozyme, encompassing original MOFs, MOF-based nanozymes with chemical modifications, MOF-based composites and MOF derivatives. It is worth mentioning that the metal ions and organic ligands in MOFs are perfectly suited for designing oxidoreductase-like nanozymes. In this review, we intend to provide an overview of recent trends and progress in MOF-based nanozymes with oxidoreductase-like activity. Furthermore, the current obstacles and prospective outlook of MOF-based nanozymes are proposed and briefly discussed. This comprehensive analysis aims to facilitate progress in the development of novel MOF-based nanozymes with oxidoreductase-like activity while serving as a valuable reference for scientists engaged in related disciplines.

Biomechanical comparison of all-polyethylene total knee replacement and its metal-backed equivalent on periprosthetic tibia using the finite element method

BACKGROUND

Total knee arthroplasty (TKA) with all-polyethylene tibial (APT) components has shown comparable survivorship and clinical outcomes to that with metal-backed tibial (MBT). Although MBT is more frequently implanted, APT equivalents are considered a low-cost variant for elderly patients. A biomechanical analysis was assumed to be suitable to compare the response of the periprosthetic tibia after implantation of TKA NexGen APT and MBT equivalent.

METHODS

A standardised load model was used representing the highest load achieved during level walking. The geometry and material models were created using computed tomography data. In the analysis, a material model was created that represents a patient with osteopenia.

RESULTS

The equivalent strain distribution in the models of cancellous bone with an APT component showed values above 1000 με in the area below the medial tibial section, with MBT component were primarily localised in the stem tip area. For APT variants, the microstrain values in more than 80% of the volume were in the range from 300 to 1500 με, MBT only in less than 64% of the volume.

CONCLUSION

The effect of APT implantation on the periprosthetic tibia was shown as equal or even superior to that of MBT despite maximum strain values occurring in different locations. On the basis of the strain distribution, the state of the bone tissue was analysed to determine whether bone tissue remodelling or remodelling would occur. Following clinical validation, outcomes could eventually modify the implant selection criteria and lead to more frequent implantation of APT components.

pH-Tuned Enantioselectivity Reversal in a Defective Chiral Metal Organic Framework

The introduction of chirality into easy-scalable metal-organic frameworks (MOFs) gives rise to the development of advanced electrochemical sensors. However, integrating chirality by directly connecting metal ions and chiral ligands is unpredictable. Postmodification synthesis is a common method for synthesizing chiral MOFs, but it reduces the size of chiral channels and poses obstacles to the approach of chiral guest molecules. In this work, missing connection defects were introduced into the chiral MOFs through defect engineering strategies, which enhance the recognition of the target enantiomers. pH can tune enantioselectivity reversal in defective chiral MOFs. The chiral MOFs show enantioselectivity for d-Trp at pH = 5 and l-Trp at pH = 8. From the results of zeta potential, regardless of pH 5 or 8, the chiral MOF has a positive potential. The chiral MOFs are positively charged, while tryptophan is negatively charged when pH = 8. The difference in the positive and negative charge interactions between the two amino acids and chiral MOFs leads to chiral recognition. However, the difference in π-π interaction between chiral MOF and Trp enantiomers mainly drives chiral recognition under pH = 5. This study paves a pathway for the synthesis of defective chiral MOFs and highlights the pH-tuned enantioselectivity reversal.

Dilute-and-shoot approach combined with in-situ formed metal-containing ionic liquids for extraction of benzophenone and related compounds from açaí-based food products

For the first time, benzophenone and related compounds were investigated in açaí-based food products. An extraction method based on the dilute-and-shoot approach, combined with the use of in-situ formed metal-containing ionic liquids (MCILs) followed by high-performance liquid chromatography, was developed and validated. A nickel and cobalt-based MCIL, in addition to the ratio of MCIL to lithium bis[(trifluoromethyl)sulfonyl]imide salt ([Li+][NTf2-]) for the ensuing metathesis reaction, were optimized. Parameters of the in-situ formed MCIL step, namely, the amount of MCIL, centrifugation time, and dilution step, were analyzed using a multivariate optimization approach, including central composite rotatable design and Derringer and Suich's tool. Optimum extraction performance was achieved using 50.98 mg of nickel-based MCIL and a MCIL to ([Li+][NTf2-]) ratio of 1:3 (m/m), a centrifuge time of 22 min, and 10.53 mL of water for the dilution step. This condition was used to perform analytical validation, which yielded satisfactory results with R2 ≥ 0.995, limits of detection (LOD) ranging from 0.0025 to 0.5 mg kg-1, and limits of quantification (LOQ) between 0.008 and 1.5 mg kg-1. The recovery rate ranged from 87 % to 107 % and precision values (as percent relative standard deviation) were equal or lower than 13 %. The validated method was applied to 25 samples of açaí-based food products purchased from Brazil and the United States. None of the samples showed analyte concentration levels above the LOD. The method's suitability was demonstrated for future monitoring of complex samples, such as foodstuffs.

Photoenhanced intrinsic peroxidase-like activity of a metal-free biocompatible borophene photonanozyme for colorimetric sensor assay of dopamine biomolecule

Photonanozymes are novel enzyme-mimicking nanomaterials with light-harvesting capacity and have widespread applications in many areas including biosensing, biomedicine, environmental applications, energy, etc. Herein, we introduce freestanding metal-free biocompitable borophene nanosheets (BNSs) exhibiting excellent photoresponsive peroxidase-like activity for biosensing applications. The photo-enhanced peroxidase-like activity of BNSs photonanozyme was indicated to be due to its band gap energy being comparable to the energy of visible light.
