Abstract
Age estimation is an important aspect of forensic investigation and is considered as one of the "Big Four" of Forensic Anthropology. One hundred and twenty (120) cephalograms of individuals aged 7-20 years were examined with reference to mandibular body length (distance between Gonion and Gnathion) mandibular length (distance between Co and Gn) and mandibular height (distance between Co and Go). An attempt has been made to assess the utility and dependability of these three linear parameters for age estimation. The mandibular body length, ramus height and mandibular length were increased by 2.23, 3.26, 4.26 mm/years respectively. There are no significant differences in mandibular linear growth between the two sexes though the female mandible has a higher growth rate compared to males. These parameters might prove to be of importance in age determination for medico-legal purposes.

Abstract
This study reports the regulation of multiple xylanases produced by Myceliophthora sp. IMI 387099. Fructose was found to positively regulate the expression of multiple xylanase when used as sole carbon source. The xylanases (EX(1 )and EX(2)) of acidic pI were expressed in the presence of simple sugars (glucose, arabinose, and xylose), whereas xylanase of both acidic as well as basic pI (EX(1,) EX(2,) EX(3), and EX(5)) were expressed in the presence of fructose, xylan, and combination of xylan and alcohol. The combination of fructose and xylan also led to expression of an additional xylanase (EX(4)). The positional isomer (iso-X4) was found to be the key transglycosylation product when cultures were grown in the presence of fructose and xylan. In the presence of alcohols, the higher expression of xylanase was ascribed to the synergistic effect of alkyl glycoside and other transglycosylation products present in the culture extracts.

Abstract
AIM To compare the effectiveness of granisetron and a granisetron-dexamethasone combination for the prevention of post-operative vomiting in children undergoing middle ear surgery. METHODS Ninety ASA physical status I or II children, aged 3-12 years, were randomly assigned to three groups of 30 each to receive a single dose of placebo (normal saline), granisetron 40 microg/kg or a combination of granisetron 40 microg/kg and dexamethasone 150 microg/kg intravenously after the induction of anaesthesia. Peri-operative anaesthetic care was standardized in all children. Post-operatively, during the first 24 h after anaesthesia, the frequencies of retching and vomiting and the incidence of adverse events were recorded. Rescue anti-emetic was administered if two or more episodes of emesis occurred. Post-operative pain was treated with morphine intravenously, followed by acetaminophen orally. RESULTS There were no differences between the treatment groups with regard to demographic data. A complete response (no retching/vomiting and no need for rescue anti-emetic) was achieved in 50%, 80% and 96.67% of children who received saline, granisetron and granisetron-dexamethasone, respectively (P < 0.05). Six children who received placebo and one who received granisetron alone required another rescue anti-emetic. The incidence of adverse events was comparable in the three groups. CONCLUSION The prophylactic granisetron-dexamethasone combination was more effective than granisetron alone in the prevention of post-operative emesis during the first 24 h after anaesthesia in children undergoing middle ear surgery.

Abstract
BACKGROUND To analyze the pathogenic organisms recovered from patients with urinary tract infection in a tertiary Indian hospital setting along with determination of the occurrence and antimicrobial sensitivity of uropathogens on a retrospective basis during a period of one year. METHODS A total of 5073 urine samples were processed. Urine culture was done using conventional microbiological techniques. Biochemical testing was used to identify the organisms and antibiotic sensitivity was done by the Kirby Bauer method. RESULTS A total of 2436 uropathogens were isolated. E coli were seen in 50.7% samples followed by Klebsiella sp (27.6%). Staphylococcus aureus was the commonest Gram-positive isolate (1.5%). Urinary tract infection (UTI) was seen in 70.5% females as compared to 29.5% males. A high recovery of isolates was noted from July to September. Multi drug resistance was commonest with Enterococcus (78.8%) followed by Pseudomonas (65.1%). Drugs, which retained usefulness for Gram-negative isolates, were amikacin, norfloxacin and cefotaxime. For Gram-positive isolates, vancomycin, teicoplanin, lincomycin and Norfloxacin were very effective. CONCLUSIONS Our study highlights the changing etiology of UTI and emergence of drug resistance within the Indian subcontinent.

Abstract
INTRODUCTION The onset of menstruation is part of the maturation process. However, variability in menstrual cycle characteristics and menstrual disorders are common. The purpose of this study was to determine the menstrual characteristics of adolescent females and factors associated with it. METHODS This is a cross-sectional descriptive study carried out on 2,411 secondary school adolescent females in Negeri Sembilan, Malaysia. Data were collected using a self-administered structured questionnaire on menstruation in Bahasa Malaysia. RESULTS Abnormal cycle length (menstrual cycle longer than 35 days or cycle length between 14 to 20 days or irregular pattern) was common and affected 37.2 percent of subjects. The majority (74.6 percent) experienced premenstrual syndrome and 69.4 percent had dysmenorrhoea. About 18 percent reported excessive menstrual loss (use two pads at a time to prevent blood from soaking through or confirmed by doctor to be anaemic due to heavy menstrual flow). Only 11.1 percent of schoolgirls seeked medical consultation for their menstrual disorders. Mothers remained the most important source of information (80 percent). Menstrual disorders were significantly more common in female adolescents who smoke and have suicidal behaviours (p-value is less than 0.05). CONCLUSION Menstrual problems among adolescent female are common. They are influenced by certain modifiable factors.

Abstract
8041 Background: ABT-510 is a synthetic peptide analog of thrombospondin-1 demonstrating inhibition of VEGF/bFGF mediated human endothelial cell migration, proliferation, tube formation, cornea-neovascularization as well as inhibition of tumor growth in vivo (B16F10 melanoma). Having been found to be safe in phase I testing, ABT-510 has entered phase II trials. Presented are the results of a phase II study using ABT-510 for the treatment of stage IV melanoma. Methods: A two stage phase II clinical trial was conducted to assess the anti-tumor activity, safety profile and pharmacodynamics of ABT510 in patients with stage IV melanoma. Patients self-administered 100mg of ABT-510 subcutaneously twice/day. Therapy was continued in the absence of excessive toxicity or tumor progression. Primary endpoint was 18 week progression free survival rate. Enrolled were patients at least 18 years of age with measurable (RECIST) metastatic melanoma, ECOG performance status of 0–2 and normal pre-registration blood tests. Exclusion criteria included: cancer therapy less than 4 weeks prior to registration; failure to recover from prior therapy; brain metastases; significant recent bleeding; uncontrolled hypertension; and ongoing anti-coagulation. Pregnant or nursing women were not eligible. Results: Twenty-one patients (67% male) were enrolled with a median age of 55 years. Most patients had M1c disease (80%) and 62% had prior chemotherapy for stage IV melanoma. None of the patients were ineligible/canceled participation. After the first stage of the trial was complete, only 3 of the first 20 patients enrolled were progression-free at 18 weeks. Having not met the minimal clinical efficacy requirement (at least 7 of the first 20 patients progression-free at 18 weeks) the trial was closed to further accrual. Correlative laboratory studies suggested decreases in some of the measured parameters of angiogenesis (VEGFC, circulating endothelial cells) with no impact on immune homeostasis. Conclusions: Single agent ABT-510 therapy administered at 100mg twice/day to patients with previously treated metastatic melanoma did not demonstrate significant clinical efficacy. However, changes in measured parameters of angiogenesis suggest possible clinical efficacy with higher dosing or in combination with cytotoxic therapy. [Table: see text]

Abstract
INTRODUCTION Sexual intercourse among Malaysian adolescents is a major concern, especially with the worry of HIV/AIDS. This study was done to determine the prevalence of sexual intercourse among secondary school students aged 12 to 19 years in Negeri Sembilan, Malaysia. METHODS This is a cross-sectional school survey conducted on 4,500 adolescent students based on a structured questionnaire. Data were collected using the self-administered questionnaire (translated version of the Youth Risk Behaviour Surveillance in Bahasa Malaysia). RESULTS The study showed that 5.4 percent of the total sample were reported to have had sexual intercourse. The proportion among male students who had had sex was higher (8.3 percent) compared with female students (2.9 percent). The mean age at first sexual intercourse was 15 years. One percent of students reported that they had been pregnant or had made someone else pregnant. Adolescent sexual intercourse was significantly associated with (1) socio-demographical factors (age, gender); (2) environmental factors (staying with parents); and (3) substance use (alcohol use, cigarette smoking, drug use), even after adjustment for demographical factors. The survey showed that 20.8 percent of respondents had taken alcohol, 14.0 percent had smoked cigarettes, 2.5 percent had tried marijuana, 1.2 percent had tried ecstasy pills, 2.6 percent had tried glue sniffing, 0.7 percent had tried heroin, and 0.7 percent had intravenous drugs. CONCLUSION Prevalence of sexual intercourse among Malaysian adolescents was relatively low compared to developed countries. However, certain groups of adolescents tend to be at higher risk of engaging in sexual intercourse. This problem should be addressed early by targeting these groups of high-risk adolescents.

Abstract
One hundred rural Punjabi males (40-60 years old) admitted to Hero DMC Heart Institute, Ludhiana with first cardiac attack were studied to identify major determinants of cardiovascular diseases (CVD) among this group. The results revealed that 20% and 56% of the subjects were smokers and alcohol takers, respectively. Smoking had a significant (p< or =0.01) correlation with serum LDL-C, triglycerides and systolic blood pressure. 84% had sedentary life style. 36% and 7% of the subjects were overweight and obese. The body mass index was positively and significantly (p< or =0.01) correlated with serum triglycerides. 32% and 20% of the subjects had systolic and diastolic blood pressure above normal. 22% were diagnosed for hyperglycemia. 6% suffered from hypercholesterolemia and 28% had borderline high values of serum cholesterol. 22% and 6% had high triglyceride and LDL-C levels, respectively. The study concluded that the etiology of CVD is multifactorial and no single factor is an absolute cause among the rural Punjabi male patients. Therefore, desirable modification in diet and life style can significantly reduce the risk of CVD among rural males of Punjab.

Abstract
Severe transient forebrain ischemia causes selective neuronal death in the hippocampal cornus ammonis 1 region. We tested the hypothesis that fimbria-fornix deafferentation can provide long-term protection to cornus ammonis 1 neurons and modulate neurogenesis following ischemia. Fimbria-fornix lesion or sham-fimbria-fornix lesion was performed on Wistar rats 13 days prior to 10 min forebrain ischemia or sham ischemia. Temperature was regulated and rats survived for 7, 14 or 28 days. Immunofluorescent bromodeoxyuridine and neuron specific nuclear protein staining and immunochemistry terminal deoxynucleotidyl transferase-mediated biotinylated UTP nick end labeling staining were performed. At 7 days after ischemia, 73%+/-14% of cornus ammonis 1 neurons were damaged, while deafferentation reduced the injury to 36%+/-17% of cornus ammonis 1 neurons. This protection persisted for at least 28 days. Ischemia significantly increased the number of bromodeoxyuridine-positive cells (85-90 cells/section in stroke group vs. 6 to 11 cells/section in normal or sham stroke group), with very few terminal deoxynucleotidyl transferase-mediated biotinylated UTP nick end labeling-stained cells adjacent to the hippocampal cornus ammonis 1. Fimbria-fornix lesioning followed by ischemia increased the percentage of new neurons 13-fold over ischemia alone and 6.5-fold over sham lesion plus ischemia. The results indicate that fimbria-fornix deafferentation provides long-term neuroprotection in cornus ammonis 1 following forebrain ischemia and promotes neurogenesis after ischemic insults.

Abstract
BACKGROUND Dengue viral infection is one of the most important public health problem in tropical countries. AIM An outbreak of dengue fever was investigated in a periurban slum area of Chandigarh, India, during September to December, 2002. MATERIALS AND METHODS Blood samples from 218 patients and 30 apparently healthy contacts were tested for dengue-specific immunoglobulin M (IgM) and IgG antibodies including 80 acute samples collected within 5 days of illness were subjected for virus isolation in newborn mice. The average temperature, rainfall, and humidity of the epidemic year were compared with the number of dengue cases. STATISTICAL ANALYSIS statistical significance was found out using c2-test. RESULTS A total of 76 cases were positive by either dengue IgM capture assay (n = 57) or virus isolation (n = 17) or both (n = 2). Fifteen of nineteen viral isolates subjected for typing by type-specific multiplex reverse transcription-polymerase chain reaction were found to be of dengue virus. High rainfall and humidity with the temperature range from 21 degrees C to 33 degrees C during the months of August and September might have favored the breeding of mosquitoes, thus leading to an increase in the number of dengue cases in October and November, 2002. CONCLUSION The present outbreak thus emphasizes the need for continuous sero epidemiological and entomological surveillance for the timely implementation of effective dengue control programme.

Abstract
Neonatal seizures may increase neuronal vulnerability later in life. Therefore, status epilepticus was induced with kainate (KA) during the first and second postnatal (P) weeks to determine whether early seizures shift the window of neuronal vulnerability to a younger age. KA was injected (i.p.) once (1x KA) on P13, P20 or P30 or three times (3 x KA), once on P6 and P9, and then either on P13, P20 or P30. After 1x KA, onset to behavioral seizures increased with age. Electroencephalography (EEG) showed interictal events appeared with maturation. After 3 x KA, spike number, frequency, spike amplitude, and high-frequency synchronous events and duration were increased at P13 when compared to age-matched controls. In contrast, P20 and P30 rats had decreases in EEG parameters relative to P20 and P30 rats with 1x KA despite that these animals had the same history of perinatal seizures on P6 and P9. In P13 rats with 1x KA, silver impregnation, hematoxylin/eosin and TUNEL methods showed no significant hippocampal injury and damage was minimal with 3 x KA. In contrast, P20 and P30 rats with 1x KA had robust eosinophilic or TUNEL positive labeling and preferential accumulation of silver ions within inner layer CA1 neurons. After 3 x KA, the CA1 but not CA3 of P20 and P30 rats was preferentially protected following 3 or 6 days. Although paradoxical changes occur in the EEG with maturation, the results indicate that early perinatal seizures do not significantly shift the window of hippocampal vulnerability to an earlier age but induce a tolerance that leads to long-term neuroprotection that differentially affects endogenous properties of CA1 versus CA3 neurons.

Abstract
A leprosy patient with no prior history of respiratory complaints, developed symptoms of dry cough, fever and dyspnea after six weeks of therapy. Peripheral eosinophilia and radiological evidence of pulmonary interstitial infiltrates pointed towards the possibility of drug-induced eosinophilic pneumonitis. The results of relevant tests for other possible pathologies were normal. The resolution of symptoms without any intervention other than withdrawal of the drug and subsequent re-challenge proved dapsone to be the cause.

Abstract
Caffeinol has been proposed as a neuroprotectant for human trials. This review covers a variety of animal models used and various attempts to take animal protocols to human trials. The accompanying paper discusses the rabbit model that was used to identify the efficacy of tissue plasminogen activator (tPA) treatment. To date, this is the only model that was able to achieve laboratory to clinical translational success. Use of caffeinol as a cytoprotective agent in rat models yielded exciting results, which led to clinical trials. However, caffeinol given with tPA in rabbits leads to increased hemorrhage. Caffeinol alone does not prove to be neuroprotective, as vasodilation by itself is not efficacious. However, vasodilation combined with thrombolysis (caffeinol with tPA) poses an increased risk of hemorrhage. For a more translational approach to study neuroprotection and neuroprotective agents in human trials, it is necessary to demonstrate the efficacy of the procedure and purported agents in several animal models.

Abstract
OBJECTIVE Knowledge of the molecular pathogenesis of oral submucous fibrosis (OSF), a potentially malignant condition with high risk of transition to oral cancer, is meagre. Alterations in the expression of retinoic acid receptor beta (RARbeta) and tumor suppressor gene, p53 are early events in oral tumorigenesis. The aim of this study was to investigate the alterations in the expression of RARbeta and p53 in OSF lesions and determine their association with disease pathogenesis. METHODS The expression of RARbeta and p53 proteins was analyzed by immunohistochemistry in 50 cases of OSF and 30 histologically normal oral tissues. RESULTS No detectable RARbeta expression was observed in 35 of 50 (70%) OSF cases. p53 protein accumulation was observed in 24 of 50 (48%) OSF cases analyzed. Thirty-six percent OSF lesions showed loss of RARbeta and p53 overexpression. Interestingly, 41 of 50 (82%) of OSF lesions showed altered expression of at least one of these two proteins. CONCLUSION Altered expression of either RARbeta or p53 in majority of OSF lesions suggests their association with disease pathogenesis and warrants follow-up to determine whether OSF lesions harboring concomitant alterations in RARbeta and p53 are at a high risk of transition to malignancy.

Abstract
Seizures increase dentate granule cell proliferation in adult rats but decrease proliferation in young pups. The particular period and number of perinatal seizures required to cause newborn granule cell suppression in development are unknown. Therefore, we examined cell proliferation with bromodeoxyuridine (BrdU) immunohistochemistry during the peak of neurogenesis (e.g., P6 and P9) and at later postnatal ages (e.g., P13, P20, or P30) following single and multiple episodes of perinatal status epilepticus induced by kainate (KA). Because an inverse relationship exists between glucocorticosteroids (CORT) levels and granule cell proliferation, plasma CORT levels and electroencephalographic (EEG) activity were simultaneously monitored to elucidate underlying mechanisms that inhibit cell proliferation. In control animals, the number of BrdU-labeled cells increased then declined with maturation. After 1x KA or 2x KA administered on P6 and P9, the numbers of BrdU-labeled cells were not different from age-matched controls. However, rat pups with 3x KA (on P6, P9, and P13) had marked suppression of BrdU-labeled cells 48-72 h after the last seizure (43 +/- 6.5% of control). Cell proliferation was also significantly inhibited on P20 after 2x KA (to 56 +/- 6.9%) or 3x KA (to 54 +/- 7.9%) and on P30 with 3x KA (to 74.5 +/- 8.2% of age-matched controls). Cell death was not apparent as chromatin stains showed increased basophilia of only inner cells lining the granule cell layers, in the absence of eosinophilia, argyrophilia, or terminal deoxynucleotidyl dUTP nick endlabeling (TUNEL) labeling at times examined. In P13 pups with 3x KA, electron microscopy revealed an increased number of immature granule cells and putative stem cells with irregular shape, condensed cytoplasm, and electron dense nuclei, and they were also BrdU positive. The EEG showed no relationship between neurogenesis and duration of high-synchronous ictal activity. However, endocrine studies showed a correlation with BrdU number and age, sustained increases in circulating CORT levels following 1x KA on P6 (0.7 +/- 0.1 to 2.40 +/- 0.86 microg/dl), and cumulative increases that exceeded 10 microg/dl at 4-8 h after 3x KA on P13 or P20. In conclusion, a history of only one or two perinatal seizure(s) can suppress neurogenesis if a second or third seizure recurs after a critical developmental period associated with a marked surge in CORT. During the first 2 weeks of postnatal life sustained increases in postictal circulating CORT levels but not duration or intensity of ictal activity has long-term consequences on neurogenesis. The occurrence of an increased proportion of immature granule cells and putative stem cells with irregular morphology in the absence of neurodegeneration suggests that progenitors may not differentiate properly and remain in an immature state.

Abstract
The clinicopathological profile of 7 cases of Cryptococcal meningitis encountered over one year period in a military hospital has been described. Severe persistent headache was the main form of presentation followed by features of progressive ill-health. Age range of cases was 34-55 years (mean 40.8 years). All were males and 6 were serving soldiers. Duration of symptoms ranged from 10 days to 6 weeks. Six patients were positive for HIV-1 antibodies. This was the initial presentation of AIDS in 6 patients accounting for 10.34% among all cases of HIV infection during that year. Both clinical and laboratory findings were subtle. Nuchal rigidity was rare, cerebro spinal fluid (CSF) cell count and protein level was normal in 3 out of 7 cases. Although culture for Cryptococcus was positive in all, it took 10 days to grow in 2 cases. India-ink stain showed scanty number of organisms in 3 cases. Low cell counts in CSF and presence of associated hyponatremia appear to be bad prognostic indicators in Cryptococcal infections of central nervous system. Latex agglutination test is a worthwhile screening test.

Abstract
Retinoids are promising agents for cancer chemoprevention. The myriad effects of retinoids on biological processes including development, differentiation, homeostasis, carcinogenesis and apoptosis are mediated through their molecular targets, the retinoid and rexinoid receptors. Tissue specific expression patterns, ligand specificities, receptor numbers, their distinct functions and functional redundancy make retinoid signaling highly complex. The cross-talks of these receptors with cell surface receptors signaling pathways, as well as their interactions with multiple co-activators and co-repressors further add to the complexity of the pleiotropic effects of retinoids. Elucidation of retinoid signaling pathways and indepth understanding of the mechanisms that underlie the anti-proliferative and apoptotic action of retinoids has paved the way for designing synthetic retinoids for effective chemoprevention and therapy of cancer. Development of receptor selective synthetic retinoids is a major focus of molecular retinoid development. Other new avenues encompass identification of novel retinoid regulated genes, orphan-receptor ligands/functions, novel retinoid mechanisms involving receptor-independent apoptosis inducing activity and synergistic combinations with other agents for cancer prevention and therapy. This review focuses on recent advances in the understanding of molecular mechanisms underlying the action of retinoids and retinoid molecular targeting studies designed primarily to develop retinoids with reduced toxicity, while maintaining or enhancing activity in context of chemoprevention. The clinical efficacy of retinoid based chemoprevention trials is discussed.

Abstract
Paucity of well-defined prognostic molecular markers severely hampers prediction of the clinical course of squamous cell carcinoma (SCC) of oral cavity. The aim of the study was to evaluate the prognostic significance of impairments in the expression of proteins involved in cell cycle regulation and locoregional spread in oral SCC of habitual betel and tobacco chewers. A prospective study was performed in 105 betel and tobacco consumers with oral SCCs during the period 1988-1999, to evaluate the prognostic relevance of impairments in the expression of proteins involved in cell cycle regulation and locoregional spread. Alterations in the expression of p53, pRb, p16, MDM2, p21, and Ets-1 proteins were determined by immunohistochemical analysis in formalin fixed, paraffin embedded tissue sections from oral SCCs. Analysis of multiple molecular biological factors showed overexpression of p53 in 69/105 (66%) cases, MDM2 in 72/105 (69%) cases, p21 in 57/105 (54%) cases and Ets-1 in 64/105 (61%) cases. Loss of pRb was observed in 58/105 (55%) cases and p16 loss was observed in 72/105 (69%) cases. Interestingly, multivariate analysis revealed loss of pRb as the most significant predictor of advanced tumour stage [P=0.001; Odd's Ratio (OR)=3.5] and overexpression of Ets-1 protein was an independent risk factor for lymph node metastasis (OR: 10.1; P<10(-6)). Multiple logistic regression models showed that pRb loss [Hazard's Ratio (HR): 3.93] and p53 overexpression (HR: 2.97) may serve as adverse prognosticators for disease free survival of the patients. The data demonstrate multiple impairments in p53/MDM2/p21/Ets-1 and p16/pRb pathways in betel and tobacco related oral tumourigenesis.

Abstract
Petroleum ether extracts of leaves, stem and inflorescence of Parthenium hysterophorus Linn. at 500, 1000, 2000 and 5000 ppm concentrations were tested in the laboratory for their toxic effects on the mean life span and progeny production of adults of the mustard aphid, Lipaphis erysimi (Kalt.). The investigations revealed a significant decrease in life span and progeny production with treatment. Among the three plant parts tested for their efficacy, the leaf extract showed the most significant effect in causing a dose dependent decline in both the life span and progeny production.

Abstract
It has been proposed that L-selectin engagement with ligand activates p38 mitogen-activated protein kinase (MAPK) and can impact on downstream events of leukocyte rolling, including adhesion, and emigration. Using a novel chemotactic assay in vivo, we visualized slow release of chemokine from an agarose gel positioned 350 microm from a postcapillary venule, which induced directed migration (chemotaxis) of neutrophils. In this system, keratinocyte-derived cytokine induced phosphorylation of p38 MAPK, which phosphorylated a downstream protein (ATF-2). This latter event was blocked by the concentration of p38 inhibitors used in this study. Mice were treated with two different p38 inhibitors: SKF86002 and SB203580. Neither inhibitor affected rolling or adhesion in microvessels. Intravenous treatment with SFK86002 (5, 10, and 20 mg/kg) 30 min before the inflammatory stimulus inhibited the total number of emigrated cells at a dose of 20 mg/kg (62%, p < 0.05), despite the presence of many adherent cells within the vessels. A similar inhibition was observed with 20 mg/kg of a second p38 inhibitor SB203580 (67%, p < 0.05). In addition to emigration, both p38 inhibitors impaired the ability of emigrated cells to migrate through the tissue toward the chemotactic stimulus. In fact, the majority of emigrated leukocytes in p38 inhibitor-treated animals remained within 50 microm of the venule. Superfusion of the tissue with SKF86002 (0.7 mM) to impact only on emigrated and not vascular leukocytes resulted in no impairment in emigration, but in a significant reduction in chemotaxis away from the vessel wall. Again, the majority of emigrated leukocytes remained within 50 microm of the blood vessel. Our results suggest that p38 does not affect rolling or adhesion, but that it is involved in leukocyte emigration and chemotaxis through interstitium in response to keratinocyte-derived cytokine in vivo.

Abstract
Oncostatin M (OSM), a member of the IL-6 family has been postulated to be a potent recruiter of leukocytes, however information regarding the molecular mechanism(s) underlying this event is extremely limited. Therefore, the aim of this study was to investigate the role of OSM-mediated leukocyte recruitment in a human system in vitro under flow conditions. A parallel-plate flow chamber assay was used to examine leukocyte recruitment from whole blood by human umbilical vein endothelium treated for 24 hours with OSM. OSM in a dose-response manner revealed very significant leukocyte rolling and adhesion reaching optimal levels at a very low concentration of OSM (10 ng/ml). The OSM-induced leukocyte rolling and adhesion was comparable to levels seen with tumor necrosis factor. OSM was extremely selective for neutrophil recruitment (96%) with <3% lymphocyte recruitment. By contrast, tumor necrosis factor-alpha revealed no such selectivity, recruiting 70% neutrophils and at least 25% lymphocytes and detectable levels of eosinophils at 24 hours. The molecular mechanism underlying the leukocyte recruitment seemed to be entirely dependent on P-selectin as leukocyte recruitment could be completely blocked by the addition of a P-selectin-blocking antibody. An elevation in both P-selectin message and protein was observed with 24 hours of OSM stimulation of endothelium. By contrast, E-selectin and VCAM-1 were not detectable after OSM stimulation. Similar results were seen with passaged dermal microvascular endothelium that does not have a prestored pool of P-selectin. Based on these results, we conclude that OSM may be a very selective potent recruiter of neutrophils in more prolonged inflammatory conditions, an event exclusively dependent on P-selectin.

Abstract
The powder technique for detecting latent fingerprints involves the application of a finely divided formulation to the fingermark impression, generally with a glass-fibre or a camel hair brush. The powder gets mechanically adhered to the sweat residue defining the ridge pattern. The furrows which are devoid of the fingerprint residue, do not adhere the powder onto them. The final outcome is that the powder formulation sticks to the ridges, but is easily blown off the furrows. Since the powder is normally coloured, the ridge pattern becomes visible and the latent print is said to have developed.

Abstract
With the use of a whole blood laminar flow chamber system, we examined the types of leukocytes, adhesion molecules and the role of nuclear factor-kappaB (NF-kappaB) in thrombin-induced leukocyte recruitment. Primary human umbilical vein endothelial cells (HUVEC) stimulated with thrombin induced a significant increase in P-selectin-dependent neutrophil recruitment. Unexpectedly, brief thrombin stimulation (3 min) of endothelium also induced a significant lymphocyte recruitment 4 h later in addition to neutrophil recruitment. E-selectin antibody reduced neutrophil recruitment by >90%, whereas vascular adhesion molecule-1 (VCAM-1)/alpha4-integrin were primarily responsible for lymphocyte recruitment. To examine whether NF-kappaB contributed to leukocyte recruitment 4 h post thrombin stimulation, we treated HUVEC with the NF-kappaB inhibitor MG-132 for 1 h before thrombin stimulation. MG-132 significantly reduced the number of rolling (77.1%) and adherent (79.9%) leukocytes compared with thrombin stimulation alone. The inhibitor was more effective at preventing lymphocyte than neutrophil recruitment, consistent with its greater effect on VCAM-1 versus E-selectin expression. Tumor necrosis factor-alpha- and MG-132-treated HUVEC displayed no inhibition of leukocyte recruitment despite a decrease in NF-kappaB activation. In summary, thrombin causes predominant neutrophil recruitment via rapid P-selectin expression but also a delayed E-selectin- and VCAM-1-dependent neutrophil and lymphocyte recruitment via de novo protein synthesis. Although NF-kappaB mobilization was essential for thrombin-mediated VCAM-1-dependent recruitment, it only partially contributed to E-selectin-dependent recruitment.

Abstract
Using a novel flow chamber assay system and whole blood, we show that leukocytes from septic individuals have a four-fold elevation of adhesion, but not rolling, on a P-selectin/beta2-integrin substrate. Most leukocytes from septic patients (but not healthy controls) that bound vascular cell adhesion molecule 1 (VCAM-1) were neutrophils. All adhesion was inhibited with an antibody specific for the VCAM-1 ligand alpha4-integrin. The alpha4-integrin was present on neutrophils from septic patients but not on neutrophils from patients with localized bacterial infections. The plasma milieu of septic patients was sufficient to induce neutrophils from healthy subjects to bind VCAM-1 under flow conditions. This is the first description of alpha4-integrin/VCAM-1 pathway of neutrophil recruitment in human disease. This pathway may provide a new therapeutic target to reduce inappropriate neutrophil adhesion without altering the normal yet critical beta2-integrin-mediated adhesive function of neutrophils.

Abstract
The high incidence of oral submucous fibrosis (OSF), a potentially malignant condition of the oral cavity, in the Indian subcontinent is causally associated with commonly prevailing habit of chewing areca nut and tobacco. Knowledge of molecular alterations in OSF is meagre. OSF is characterised by progressive accumulation of collagen fibres in lamina propria and oral submucosa. Colligin/HSP47 is a 47KDa stress protein which acts as a chaperone for collagen. We hypothesized that since colligin plays a vital role in folding and assembling collagen it may be involved in the pathogenesis of OSF. The present study was undertaken in tobacco and areca nut chewing Indian OSF patients to investigate the correlation, if any, between the expression of colligin and collagen type I proteins in OSF lesions. Immunohistochemical analysis showed overexpression of colligin and collagen type I proteins in 16/23 (70%) and 15/23 (65%) of OSF cases, respectively. The hallmark of the study was the significant association between the increased expression of type I collagen and its chaperone, colligin, in OSF lesions (P=0.0494). The data suggest that the increased levels of colligin in OSF may contribute to the deposition of collagen and consequent increased fibrosis in the oral submucosa in OSF lesions.

Abstract
This study investigated the effects of chronically administered acetyl-L-carnitine (ALC) on sodium potassium adenosine triphosphatase (Na(+), K(+)-ATPase), glutathione-S-transferase (GST), glutathione peroxidase (GPx), multiple unit activity (MUA) and lipid peroxidation (LP) and lipofuscin (LF) concentration in brain regions: cerebral cortex, hippocampus, striatum and thalamus, of 24-month-old rats. The activity of Na(+), K(+)-ATPase and GST was enhanced; that of GPx was unaffected. The MUA was increased while the levels of LP and LF were decreased. These novel data provide new additional evidence concerning the antiaging attributes of ALC.

Abstract
To better understand the role of melanin in the response of cells to radiation, the vector pcTYR containing the tyrosinase cDNA and a control vector pcTYW with no tyrosinase cDNA were transfected and expressed in nonpigmented CHOK1-A(L) 1282B5 cells. A pigmented clone was selected from the pcTYR transfectants and an antibiotic-resistant clone was selected from the controls. Melanin was assessed qualitatively by electron paramagnetic resonance (EPR) and quantitatively by a 14C-based assay. The EPR signal detectable in pcTYR-containing cells was at least twice that of pcTYW and parental CHOK1-A(L) cells and the tyrosinase activity was found to be at least six times greater. Melanin was classified to be eumelanin. Survivals of the transfectants were compared to those of the parent cells after irradiation by UVC from a germicidal lamp, UVB from TL01 lamps, UVA from Alisun lamps, UVB/UVA from FS20 lamps, and by gamma-rays from a 137Cs source. Compared to the pcTYW-containing cells, the pigmented cells were more sensitive to killing by UVC, and resistant to killing by UVA and gamma-rays. There were no significant differences in survival after the other irradiations. These results suggest that the pigment synthesized by the activity of tyrosinase alone, unmodified by the activities of TRP1 and TRP2, is protective against the types of reactive oxygen species produced by UVA and gamma-rays but not protective against lethal damage from photons in the UVB range and sensitizes to UVC photons.
