Abstract
BACKGROUND Patients with aortic valve sclerosis (AVS) have an increased risk of cardiovascular events. Patients with atherosclerotic renal artery stenosis (RAS) develop resistant hypertension and heart failure. We hypothesized AVS may be copresent with RAS in hypertensive patients. METHODS Hypertensive patients with AVS (n = 167) underwent magnetic resonance (MR) angiography using nonenhanced steady-state free precession (SSFP) technique. More than 75% luminal narrowing in the proximal region of main renal artery was regarded as significant RAS. Peak aortic jet velocity was obtained by Doppler echocardiography. We measured brain natriuretic peptide (BNP), and estimated glomerular filtration rate (GFR) using the Modification of Diet in Renal Disease equation. RESULTS Unilateral or bilateral RAS was detected in 40 patients. AVS patients with RAS were older (78 +/- 6 vs. 74 +/- 8 years), and had higher levels of aortic jet velocity (162 +/- 4 vs. 144 +/- 3 cm/s), and lower levels of GFR (55 +/- 13 vs. 62 +/- 14 ml/min/1.73 m(2)) than those without RAS. Higher aortic jet velocity (odds ratio (OR) = 1.58, 95% confidence interval (CI) = 1.09-2.31) and lower GFR (OR = 0.54, 95% CI = 0.33-0.38) were associated with the presence of RAS, after being adjusted for age, systolic blood pressure, and BNP. CONCLUSIONS RAS was detected in hypertensive patients with AVS, particularly in patients with higher aortic jet velocity and lower GFR. Higher aortic jet velocity and lower GRF may be useful as a potential indicator for those needing assessment of RAS for risk stratification and deserves further study.

Abstract
A 67-years-old female, who was suffered from hemoptysis for about 50 years and was diagnosed as bronchiectasis of left lower lobe, was admitted to our hospital to receive elective surgical treatment. Left lower lobectomy was performed, and on the 10th postoperative day, massive hemoptysis occurred and intratracheal hemorrhage caused occlusion of the respiratory tract. Selective bronchial arteriogram revealed that bronchial artery of the left upper lobe developed remarkably, compared with the findings 1 year ago, and the bleeding site was located in the left upper lobe, which seemed to be almost normal before the operation. After embolization of this artery the hemoptysis stopped. If bronchial artery, which develop well and distribute to the bleeding lobe of the lung, have branches to adjacent another lobe, change of blood stream of bronchial artery by operation may cause early postoperative recurrence of hemoptysis.

Abstract
mu-Crystallin is an NADPH-dependent cytosolic T3-binding protein. A knockout study in mice showed that mu-crystallin has a physiological function as a reservoir of T3 in the cytoplasm in vivo. Patients with nonsyndromic deafness were reported to have point mutations in the mu-crystallin gene. The expression of mu-crystallin is regulated by multiple factors. The present study was performed to determine whether thyroid function is related to the expression of mu-crystallin mRNA in peripheral mononuclear cells. We examined 23 normal healthy male and female subjects and 15 patients with Graves' disease. mu-Crystallin protein expression was determined immunohistochemically in peripheral mononuclear cells. The expression of mu-crystallin mRNA was assessed by reverse transcription of total RNA from peripheral mononuclear cells followed by quantitative PCR. mu-Crystallin protein was detected in peripheral mononuclear cells. The mRNA expression was negatively correlated with age in normal female subjects. The values in female subjects were significantly higher than those in males. The values were positively correlated with serum TSH concentration. The values of the thyrotoxic patients with Graves' disease were lower than those in healthy subjects. A transient increase in mu-crystallin expression was observed within 14-42 days after the initial treatment with antithyroid medication. Thyroid hormone inversely relates to the expression of mu-crystallin mRNA in euthyroid mononuclear cells. Abrupt suppression of thyroid function leads to overexpression of mu-crystallin mRNA in thyrotoxic mononuclear cells. Thyroid hormone-regulated mu-crystallin expression may control thyroid hormone action via the intracytoplasmic T (3) capacity.

Abstract
PURPOSE OF INVESTIGATION The clinical characteristics and long-term prognostic factors of borderline ovarian tumors (BOTs) were evaluated. METHODS Data from patients who were treated for BOTs in the Kinki District of Japan from 1990 to 2006 were revieved. Two hundred and twenty-two cases were retrospectively investigated for stage, surgical procedure, histopathological features, adjuvant chemotherapy and prognosis. RESULTS FIGO stages included 212 patients with Stage I disease, three with Stage II and seven with Stage III. One hundred and sixty-nine cases were diagnosed as mucinous tumor, 47 were serous, and six were others. Radical surgery was performed in 136 patients and conservative surgery in 86 patients. Only two patients showed invasive peritoneal implants. Forty patients received adjuvant chemotherapy. The survival rate was 95% at ten-years. Statistical analysis showed that earlier stage, absence of residual tumors, peritoneal implants, ovarian stromal involvement, and negative peritoneal cytology were associated with significantly better overall survival. CONCLUSION The prognosis of patients with BOT is excellent. There are insufficient data to support a role for aggressive surgery and adjuvant chemotherapy for the possibility of prolonged survival.

Abstract
Compound A (3-{2-oxo-3-[3-(5,6,7,8-tetrahydro-[1,8]napthyridin-2-yl)propyl]-imidazolidin-1-yl}-3(S)-(6-methoxy-pyridin-3-yl)propionic acid), a hydrophilic zwitter-ion, is a potent and selective alphavbeta3 integrin antagonist currently under clinical development for the treatment of osteoporosis. The mechanism of renal excretion of compound A was investigated using a combination of in vivo and in vitro approaches. In rats, renal excretion of compound A involved tubular secretion; ratios between renal clearance, corrected for unbound fraction in plasma (CLr,u) and glomerular filtration rate (GFR) were greater than unity (2-5). The tubular secretion of compound A was saturable at high plasma levels (> 26 microM), and was inhibited significantly, although modestly (about twofold) by relatively high plasma concentrations of the organic anion PAH (160 microM) and the cation cimetidine (about 400 microM), but not by the P-gp inhibitor quinidine (about 50 microM). However, compound A (about 100 microM) had a minimal effect on CLr/GFRs for cimetidine and PAH. In rhesus monkeys, renal elimination of compound A also involved tubular secretion, with a CLr,u/GFR ratio of about 30. The renal secretion of compound A was not affected by either cimetidine (about 120 microM) or PAH (about 80 microM). Similarly, compound A (about 40 microM) had a minimal effect on the renal tubular secretion of both cimetidine and PAH. At the doses studied, neither rat nor monkey plasma protein binding of compound A, cimetidine or PAH was affected in the presence of each other. In vitro transport studies showed that compound A was not a substrate for P-gp in the Caco-2, human MDR1 and mouse mdr1a transfected LLC-PK1 cell lines. In an uptake study using rOAT1 and rOAT3 transfected HEK cell lines, compound A was shown to be a substrate for rat OAT3 (Km= 15 microM), but not rat OAT1. The results suggest that the tubular secretion of compound A is not mediated by P-gp, but rather is mediated, at least in part, via the organic anion transporter OAT3, the renal transporter shown to be capable of transporting both the organic anion PAH and the organic cation cimetidine. Although there is a possibility for pharmacokinetic interactions between compound A and substrates or inhibitors of OAT3, at the renal excretion level, the magnitude of interaction would likely be modest in humans at clinically relevant doses.

Abstract
The effects of different fibric acid derivatives (bezafibrate, clofibrate, clofibric acid, fenofibrate, fenofibric acid and gemfibrozil) on human organic anion transporting-polypeptide 1B1 (OATP2, OATP-C, SLC21A6), multidrug resistance protein 2 (MRP2/ABCC2) and MDR1-type P-glycoprotein (P-gp/ABCB1) were examined in vitro. Cyclosporin A (a known inhibitor of OATP1B1 and P-gp), MK-571 (a known inhibitor of MRP2) and cimetidine (an organic cation) were also tested. Bezafibrate, fenofibrate, fenofibric acid and gemfibrozil showed concentration-dependent inhibition of estradiol 17-beta-D-glucuronide uptake by OATP1B1-stably transfected HEK cells, whereas clofibrate and clofibric acid did not show any significant effects up to 100 microM. Inhibition kinetics of gemfibrozil, which exhibited the most significant inhibition on OATP1B1, was shown to be competitive with a Ki = 12.5 microM. None of the fibrates showed any significant inhibition of MRP2-mediated transport, which was evaluated by measuring the uptake of ethacrynic acid glutathione into MRP2-expressing Sf9 membrane vesicles. Only fenofibrate showed moderate P-gp inhibition as assessed by measuring cellular accumulation of vinblastine in a P-gp overexpressing cell-line. Cyclosporin A significantly inhibited OATP1B1 and P-gp, whereas only moderate inhibition was observed on MRP2. The rank order of inhibitory potency of MK-571 was determined as OATP1B1 (IC50: 0.3 microM) > MRP2 (4 microM) > P-gp (25 microM). Cimetidine did not show any effects on these transporters. In conclusion, neither MRP2- nor P-gp-mediated transport is inhibited significantly by the fibrates tested. Considering the plasma protein binding and IC50 values for OATP1B1, only gemfibrozil appeared to have a potential to cause drug-drug interactions by inhibiting OATP1B1 at clinically relevant concentrations.

Abstract
1. The study investigated mechanisms underlying the stereoselective hepatic disposition observed in rats of a zwitterionic diastereomeric pair ((3S)-3-[(3R or 3S)-2-oxo-3-[3-(5,6,7,8-tetrahydro-1,8-naphthyridin-2-yl)propyl]pyrrolidin-1-yl]-3-quinolin-3-ylpropanoic acid) with different lipophilicities. 2. In a recirculating isolated rat liver system, the more hydrophilic diastereomer II possessed biliary clearance, CLb, and bile-to-liver concentration ratio higher (about 10-30-fold) than the lipophilic zwitterion I, whereas both I and II exhibited comparably high concentration ratios between liver and perfusate. Although MK-571, a known multidrug resistance protein (MRP) inhibitor, significantly inhibited the CLb of both compounds, it did not inhibit their canalicular transport, as evident by unchanged concentration ratios between bile and liver of either I or II. 3. Following an intravenous infusion of I or II to Sprague-Dawley rats, the biliary clearance calculated either based on plasma (CL(b,p)) or liver concentration (CL(b,l)), of II was much higher than that of I (about 5-50-fold). In rats lacking multidrug resistance protein 2 (Mrp2) (Eisai hyperbilirubinemic rat, EHBR), the biliary excretion rate and CL(b,p) of II were also higher than the corresponding values for I. However, both CL(b,p) or CL(b,l) of either I or II were not reduced in EHBR, as compared with control SD rats. 4. In the in vitro rat canalicular membrane vesicle study, I and II exhibited no differences in their inhibitory effect on the Mrp2 mediated ATP-dependent [3H]DNP-SG initial uptake (no inhibition at 10 microM and only about 40% inhibition at 100 microM). 5. Collectively, these results suggested that (1) the difference in the hepatic disposition between the two isomers was due primarily to the difference in their transport mechanism across the canalicular membrane and (2) Mrp2 did not play a major role in the observed differences in the biliary excretion of the diastereomers I and II in rats.

Abstract
PURPOSE Several reports have suggested that unusual thermal injuries in magnetic resonance (MR) imaging have occurred due to a closed conducting loop formed accidentally in a part of the patient's body. In this study, we investigated the relationship between the increases in temperature and several parameter settings for MR imaging by use of a human body-equivalent phantom. METHOD AND MATERIALS A standard clinical 1.5T MR system (SIGNA HORIZON; GE) and a pelvic phased-array coil were used. The human body-equivalent phantom (agar, 0.9% saline, antiseptic) simulated a part of the pelvis and both femurs in a patient. A closed conducting loop could be reproduced when two ends of femurs contacted each other at a point, so that we could measure the temperature changes without and with a closed conducting loop. The temperature of the phantom was measured at the contact point of a closed conducting loop and the center of phantom by use of an optical fiber thermometer which was immune to the influences of radiofrequency (RF) and magnetic and electronic fields. We tested two imaging sequences of spin echo (SE) and fast spin echo (FSE) with 60 minutes of scanning time. In addition to the standard imaging sequences we measured temperature changes without the RF irradiation or gradient magnetic fields. The average temperature changes were recorded from five measurements which were repeated at intervals of more than one day. RESULTS When the closed conducting loop was reproduced, the temperatures at the contact point significantly increased (p<0.001) compared with the temperatures at the center of phantom. The temperature changes at 60 minutes of scanning time were 7.0 and 8.1 degrees C by use of the SE and FSE, respectively. There were no significant temperature changes when the imaging was performed without the RF irradiation. CONCLUSION Our result obtained by use of a human body-equivalent phantom demonstrated that local heating, which can lead to thermal injuries accidentally, could occur when a closed conducting loop was formed in part of the patient body. CLINICAL RELEVANCE/APPLICATION: Radiologists should be more careful about local heating which can occur in patients during clinical MR imaging by a closed conducting loop.

Abstract
AIMS Sporadic amyotrophic lateral sclerosis (ALS) is a progressive and invariably fatal disease involving the upper and lower motor neurones of adult humans. Among the neuropathological features of the disease, abnormalities in the protein-synthesizing system in motor neurones of the brainstem and spinal cord, such as a decrease of cytoplasmic RNA and rough endoplasmic reticulum (rER) (chromatolysis), defective editing of the Q/R site of the glutamate receptor subunit GluR2 mRNA, fragmentation of the Golgi apparatus and accumulation of ubiquitinated inclusions and abnormal TdP-43 protein have been reported to be essential for the degeneration. In relation to these features, although the possibility of ER stress has been reported in motor neurones of the brainstem and spinal cord of ALS patients, the rER itself has not been a main target of ultrastructural investigation. METHODS The present study examined the rER, ultrastructurally and quantitatively in the spinal anterior horn cells (AHCs) of 21 Japanese patients with sporadic ALS and eight Japanese control subjects. RESULTS AND CONCLUSIONS It was found that: (i) the rER cisternae in AHCs showing central chromatolysis were fragmented, but retained their width and had normally attached ribosomes, and (ii) the rER cisternae in shrunken AHCs were irregularly distended with detachment of the ribosomes, thus suggesting that (iii) ribosomal detachment was related to rER distention.

Abstract
We have investigated the effects of poly(ethylene glycol) (PEG) on the structure and phase behavior of multilamellar vesicles of dihexadecylphosphatidylcholine (DHPC-MLVs) using an X-ray diffraction method. At low concentrations of PEG-6K (MW = 7500), DHPC-MLVs were in an interdigitated gel (L(beta)I) phase, a gel phase with interdigitated hydrocarbon chains. At around 24% (w/v) PEG 6K, a phase transition from the L(beta)I phase to a bilayer gel phase occurred in the DHPC-MLVs, and above this concentration, they were in a bilayer gel phase. On the other hand, ethylene glycol (EG), the monomer of PEG, did not induce this phase transition in the DHPC-MLVs. A mechanism of this phase transition is proposed and discussed; a decrease in the repulsive interaction between the head groups of the phospholipids in the bilayer gel phase with an increase in PEG concentration, which is due to a decrease in the cross-sectional area of the head group region by osmotic stress, may be the main reason for this phase transition.

Abstract
To investigate the interaction of the surface of biomembranes with solvents systematically, we have studied the structure and phase behavior of multilamellar vesicles of dipalmitoylphosphatidylcholine (DPPC) and 1-palmitoyl-2-oleoyl-phosphatidylcholine (POPC) in dimethylformamide (DMF)-water mixture by X-ray diffraction and differential scanning calorimetry. The solubility of phosphorylcholine, which is the same molecular structure as the head-group of phosphatidylcholine (PC), decreased with an increase in DMF concentration. This result indicates that DMF is a poor solvent for the hydrophilic segments of the surface of the PC membrane, and interaction free energy of the hydrophilic segments of the membrane surface with solvents increases with an increase in DMF concentration. X-ray diffraction data indicated that DPPC-MLVs were in the bilayer gel phase from 0 to 80% (v/v) DMF, and that the spacing (lamellar repeat period) and intermembrane distance of DPPC-MLV decreased with an increase in DMF concentration. Main transition temperature and pre-transition temperature of DPPC-MLV increased with an increase in DMF concentration, and above 50% (v/v) DMF there was no pre-transition. In the interaction of POPC-MLV with DMF, X-ray diffraction data indicated that POPC-MLVs were in L(alpha) phase (liquid-crystalline phase) from 0 to 80% (v/v) DMF, and that the spacing and intermembrane distance of POPC-MLV decreased with an increase in DMF concentration. These results are discussed by the change of the interaction free energy between the hydrophilic segments of the membrane surface and solvents. As DMF concentration increases, this interaction free energy may increase, resulting in the decrease of the intermembrane distance of PC-MLVs.

Abstract
Regulatory T cells (Treg) are important in peripheral tolerance, but their role in establishing and maintaining hematopoietic mixed chimerism and generating central tolerance is unclear. We now show that costimulation blockade using a donor-specific transfusion and anti-CD154 antibody applied to mice given bone marrow and simultaneously transplanted with skin allografts leads to hematopoietic chimerism and permanent skin allograft survival. Chimeric mice bearing intact skin allografts fail to generate effector/memory T cells against allogeneic targets as shown by the absence of IFNgamma-producing CD44(high)CD8+ T cells and in vivo cytotoxicity. Depletion of Tregs by injection of anti-CD4 or anti-CD25 antibody prior to costimulation blockade prevents chimerism, shortens skin allograft survival and leads to generation of effector/memory cytotoxic T cells. Depletion of Tregs by injection of anti-CD4 or anti-CD25 antibody two months after transplantation leads to loss of skin allografts even though mice remain chimeric and exhibit little in vivo cytotoxicity. In contrast, chimerism is lost, but skin allografts survive following naïve T-cell injection. We conclude that hematopoietic chimerism and peripheral tolerance may be maintained by different mechanisms in mixed hematopoietic chimeras.

Abstract
The epidermal growth factor receptor (EGFR) is a member of the EGFR family of receptors. EGFR and other members of the EGFR family have been shown to play significant roles in human cancer cell proliferation and therefore present important molecular targets for the treatment of cancer. The purpose of this study was to examine the effect of the pan-erbB tyrosine kinase inhibitor CI-1033 against esophageal squamous cell carcinoma in vitro and in vivo. We selected 4 human esophageal squamous cell carcinoma cell lines (TT, TE2, TE6, and TE10), and determined their expression of EGFR and HER2. We examined the ability of CI-1033 to inhibit cell growth in vitro and in vivo. EGFR and HER2 were overexpressed in all 4 esophageal cancer cells. We found that CI-1033 could inhibit the growth of esophageal cancer cell lines in a dose-dependent manner with the inhibition of phosphorylation of both MAPK and AKT. The oral administration of CI-1033 exerted a significant antitumor effect on esophageal cancer tumors in athymic nude mice. Our results suggest that CI-1033 effectively inhibits the growth of esophageal squamous cell carcinoma which co-expresses both EGFR and HER2 with the inhibition of phosphorylation of both MAPK and AKT. Furthermore, in vivo animal studies of CI-1033 suggest that CI-1033 holds significant clinical potential in esophageal cancer.

Abstract
BACKGROUND The hair cycle is regulated by various molecules, among which FGF-5 has been shown to promote the transition from anagen to catagen. The FGFR-1, a trans-membrane receptor of FGF-5 with tyrosine kinase activity, is localized in the follicular papilla of hair follicles. OBJECTIVES In order to apply the antisense oligonucleotides targeting FGFR-1 as a treatment for baldness, we examined the effect of the oligonucleotides on hair follicle growth in a serum-free organ culture system. METHODS Vibrissal hair follicles from C3H/He mice were cultured in the presence of a reagent at 31 degrees C in 95% O(2)-5% CO(2) for 72 h. A 20-mer antisense nucleotide and its randomly arranged counterpart were prepared by predicting the effective target site of FGFR-1 mRNA. Cellular activity in the hair bulb was estimated by measuring the fluorescence intensity (FI) of the medium after incubation with AlamarBlue dye. RESULTS The addition of 30 microM of the phosphorothioate form of antisense oligonucleotide (A1561TS) to the media increased the FI by 30%, whereas the control produced no detectable change. This effect was reproducible dose-dependent with maximal stimulation at 30 microM. Incorporation of the oligonucleotide into the follicular papilla was histologically confirmed by incubation with FITC-labeled phosphorothioate oligonucleotides, and the intact morphological structure of the hair bulb was maintained intact after a 72-h incubation. CONCLUSIONS These results suggest the clinical utility of antisense nucleotide targeting FGFR-1 as a treatment for baldness.

Abstract
Multiple sclerosis (MS) in Asian populations is often characterized by the selective involvement of the optic nerve (ON) and spinal cord (SP) (OSMS) in contrast to classic MS (CMS), where frequent lesions are observed in the cerebrum, cerebellum or brainstem. In Western countries, inflammatory demyelinating disease preferentially involving the ON and SP is called neuromyelitis optica (NMO). Recently, Lennon et al. discovered that NMO-IgG, shown to bind to aquaporin 4 (AQP4), could be a specific marker of NMO and also of Japanese OSMS whose clinical features were identical to NMO having long spinal cord lesions extending over three vertebral segments (LCL). To examine this antibody in larger populations of Japanese OSMS patients in order to know its epidemiological and clinical spectra, we established an immunohistochemical detection system for the anti-AQP4 antibody (AQP4-Ab) using the AQP4-transfected human embryonic kidney cell line (HEK-293) and confirmed AQP4-Ab positivity together with the immunohistochemical staining pattern of NMO-IgG in approximately 60% of Japanese OSMS patients with LCL. Patients with OSMS without LCL and those with CMS were negative for this antibody. Our results accorded with those of Lennon et al. suggest that Japanese OSMS with LCL may have an underlying pathogenesis in common with NMO.

Abstract
Heart-type fatty acid-binding protein (H-FABP), a marker of acute myocardial infarction and a soluble cytosolic protein, may be released following left ventricular remodelling in cardiac overloaded hearts caused by hypertension, aortic regurgitation (AR) or aortic stenosis (AS). Our aim was to investigate if H-FABP levels are associated with left ventricular remodelling and clinical outcome in hypertensive patients with AR or AS. H-FABP and brain natriuretic peptide (BNP) were measured, glomerular filtration rate (GFR) was estimated using the modification of diet in renal disease (MDRD) equation, and left ventricular dimension at systole corrected for body surface area (LVDs/BSA) and relative wall thickness (RWT) were determined by echocardiography in hypertensive patients with mild-to-moderate AR (n=78), those with mild-to-moderate AS (n=73) and those without valvular heart diseases (HT) (n=50). H-FABP levels were significantly higher in AR (4.9+/-3 ng/ml) and in AS (4.5+/-3) than in HT (3.4+/-1) and BNP (65+/-73 pg/ml, 76+/-75, 35+/-22). H-FABP correlated with LVDs/BSA in AR (beta=0.23, P<0.05), and RWT in AS (beta=0.18, P<0.05) after adjustment for age, gender and all the other variables. AS and AR patients were prospectively followed up for cardiac events during 34+/-19 months. A multivariate Cox hazard analysis indicated H-FABP was an independent predictor of outcome both in AR (relative risk (RR)=7.61, 95% CI=2.39-25.3) and AS (RR=13.6, 95% CI=3.27-66.9). H-FABP, associated with left ventricular remodelling, is useful in predicting clinical outcome in hypertensive patients with mild-to-moderate aortic valve diseases.

Abstract
STUDY DESIGN A case report. SETTING Urodynamic laboratory in a university hospital, Chiba, Japan. CASE REPORT A young woman who suffered from urinary retention following a skiing accident. A sacral X-ray (lateral view) revealed an S2-3 sacral fracture. The patient gradually regained the ability to urinate. At 3 months after the accident, she still suffered difficult urination, although her neurological findings were normal. A urodynamic study showed an acontractile detrusor and a neurogenic sphincter electromyogram (EMG), together indicative of isolated sacral nerve injury. CONCLUSIONS It was postulated that the S2-3 sacral fracture had led to bilateral traction of the S2-3 nerve roots, producing transient bladder paralysis (parasympathetic fibers) and incomplete sphincter paresis (somatic fibers). Sacral fracture is also of high clinical suspicion for urinary retention in frail elderly people, because it can result from simple falls.

Abstract
The objective of the study was to develop a Japanese version of the Oral Health Impact Profile (OHIP). The original 49 items were translated using a forward-backward method following accepted cultural adaptation guidelines. A de novo development of Japanese items was conducted to establish content validity. The associations between the OHIP summary score and self-reported oral health (n = 220) and self-reported denture quality (n = 155) were investigated for construct validity. The association between the OHIP summary score and six oral conditions (n = 227) were also tested. The responsiveness of the instrument was established by comparing the score before and after using newly fabricated removable partial dentures (n = 30). The test-retest reliability (n = 37) and internal consistency (n = 251) were also calculated. After the de novo development, five new items were added to the OHIP. The priori hypothesized associations between the OHIP score and oral health conditions were confirmed (P < 0.001). The change in the OHIP scores from 63.6 to 40.6 (P < 0.001) supports the responsiveness of the instrument. Intra-class correlation coefficients of 0.81 and Cronbach's alpha of 0.98 indicate high test-retest reliability and internal consistency of the instrument's summary score. Sufficient discriminative and evaluative psychometric properties of the currently developed Japanese version of the OHIP in typical target populations make the instrument suitable for assessing the oral health-related quality of life in cross-sectional as well as longitudinal studies.
