Abstract
Primary liver cancer (PLC) may be mainly classified as the following four types: hepatocellular carcinoma (HCC), intrahepatic cholangiocarcinoma (ICC), hepatoblastoma (HB), and combined hepatocellular carcinoma and intrahepatic cholangiocarcinoma (cHCC-ICC). The majority of PLC develops in the background of tumor microenvironment, such as inflammatory microenvironments caused by viral hepatitis, alcoholic or nonalcoholic steatohepatitis, carbon tetrachloride (CCl4), 3,5-diethoxycarbonyl-1,4-dihydrocollidine (DDC), and necroptosis-associated hepatic cytokine microenvironment caused by necroptosis of hepatocytes. However, the impact of different types of microenvironments on the phenotypes of PLC generated by distinct oncogenes is still unclear. In addition, the cell origin of different liver cancers have not been clarified, as far as we know. Recent researches show that mature hepatocytes retain phenotypic plasticity to differentiate into cholangiocytes. More importantly, our results initially demonstrated that HCC, ICC, and cHCC-ICC could originate from mature hepatocytes rather than liver progenitor cells (LPCs), hepatic stellate cells (HSCs) and cholangiocytes in AKT-driven, AKT/NICD-driven and AKT/CAT-driven mouse PLC models respectively by using hydrodynamic transfection methodology. Therefore, liver tumors originated from mature hepatocytes embody a wide spectrum of phenotypes from HCC to CC, possibly including cHCC-ICC and HB. However, the underlying mechanism determining the cancer phenotype of liver tumors has yet to be delineated. In this review, we will provide a summary of the possible mechanisms for directing the cancer phenotype of liver tumors (i.e., ICC, HCC, and cHCC-ICC) in terms of oncogenic driver genes and tumor microenvironment. Moreover, this study initially revealed the cell origin of different types of liver cancer.

Abstract
Kidney stones, a painful and costly disease, have become a public health problem worldwide. The aim of this study was to evaluate the association between serum magnesium levels and the prevalence of kidney stones in a large population context. This study was conducted in Xiangya Hospital, Central South University in Changsha, Hunan, China, between October 2013 and December 2015. A total of 6228 subjects aged ≥ 18 years old were included. Kidney stones were diagnosed by (1) direct visualisation of stone(s) on the abdominal ultrasound examination, and (2) presence of stone(s) with a diameter ≥ 4 mm. The chemiluminescence method was used to measure the serum magnesium concentration. The association between serum magnesium and the prevalence of kidney stones was evaluated using logistic and spline regression in a cross-sectional study. The prevalence of kidney stones was 6.1% (7.5% in men and 4.2% in women). Compared with the lowest quartile, the crude odds ratio for kidney stones was 0.62 (95% CI 0.46-0.85) for the highest quartile of serum magnesium, and there was an inverse dose-response relationship (P for trend = 0.038). Similar results were observed for men and women separately. The findings were not materially altered by adjustment for potential confounders. In conclusion, subjects with relatively lower levels of serum magnesium, even though within the normal range, were subject to a higher prevalence of kidney stones in a dose-response relationship manner, indicating that magnesium may play a certain role in the prevention or treatment of kidney stones.

Abstract
The application of photocatalyst in pavements has received comprehensive attention in recent years due to its ability to decontaminate nitrogen oxides (NOx). However, it's remarkable that NOx also accumulated extensively in parking lots. The purpose of this study is to develop a movable photocatalytic plate (remarked photocatalytic KT plates) coupled with high activity to purify NOx. Firstly, the type of photocatalytic KT plates was determined according to NO removal experiment in laboratory. Then the plates were employed in the parking lots for removing NOx. One sample T-test, normality test and paired sample T-test methods for NOx concentration variation were conducted to determine the appropriate comparative means of dates under both dark and illuminated conditions. The difference of NOX concentration between dark and illuminated conditions was obtained to evaluate the photocatalytic removal efficiency. The results indicated that NO removal efficiency in laboratory and parking lots were 51.31% and 9.2%, respectively.

Abstract
Several professional organizations have recommended tramadol as one of the first-line or second-line therapies for patients with chronic noncancer pain and its prescription has been increasing rapidly worldwide; however, the safety profile of tramadol, such as risk of fracture, remains unclear. This study aimed to examine the association of tramadol with risk of hip fracture. Among individuals age 50 years or older without a history of hip fracture, cancer, or opioid use disorder in The Health Improvement Network (THIN) database in the United Kingdom general practice (2000-2017), five sequential propensity score-matched cohort studies were assembled, ie, participants who initiated tramadol or those who initiated one of the following medications: codeine (n = 146,956) (another commonly used weak opioid), naproxen (n = 115,109) or ibuprofen (n = 107,438) (commonly used nonselective nonsteroidal anti-inflammatory drugs [NSAIDs]), celecoxib (n = 43,130), or etoricoxib (n = 27,689) (cyclooxygenase-2 inhibitors). The outcome was incident hip fracture over 1 year. After propensity-score matching, the included participants had a mean age of 65.7 years and 56.9% were women. During the 1-year follow-up, 518 hip fracture (3.7/1000 person-years) occurred in the tramadol cohort and 401 (2.9/1000 person-years) occurred in the codeine cohort. Compared with codeine, hazard ratio (HR) of hip fracture for tramadol was 1.28 (95% confidence interval [CI] 1.13 to 1.46). Risk of hip fracture was also higher in the tramadol cohort than in the naproxen (2.9/1000 person-years for tramadol, 1.7/1000 person-years for naproxen; HR = 1.69, 95% CI 1.41 to 2.03), ibuprofen (3.4/1000 person-years for tramadol, 2.0/1000 person-years for ibuprofen; HR = 1.65, 95% CI 1.39 to 1.96), celecoxib (3.4/1000 person-years for tramadol, 1.8/1000 person-years for celecoxib; HR = 1.85, 95% CI 1.40 to 2.44), or etoricoxib (2.9/1000 person-years for tramadol, 1.5/1000 person-years for etoricoxib; HR = 1.96, 95% CI 1.34 to 2.87) cohort. In this population-based cohort study, the initiation of tramadol was associated with a higher risk of hip fracture than initiation of codeine and commonly used NSAIDs, suggesting a need to revisit several guidelines on tramadol use in clinical practice. © 2020 American Society for Bone and Mineral Research.

Abstract
The semiconductor manufacturing sector plans to introduce III/V film structures (eg, gallium arsenide (GaAs), indium arsenide (InAs) onto silicon wafers due to their high electron mobility and low power consumption. Aqueous solutions generated during chemical and mechanical planarization of silicon wafers can contain a mixture of metal oxide nanoparticles (NPs) and soluble indium, gallium, and arsenic. In this work, the cytotoxicity induced by Ga- and In-based NPs (GaAs, InAs, Ga2O3, In2O3) and soluble III-V salts on human bronchial epithelial cells (16HBE14o-) was evaluated using a cell impedance real-time cell analysis (RTCA) system. The RTCA system provided inhibition data at different concentrations for multiple time points, for example, GaAs (25 mg/L) caused 60% inhibition after 8 hours of exposure and 100% growth inhibition after 24 hours. Direct testing of As(III) and As(V) demonstrated significant cytotoxicity with 50% growth inhibition concentrations after 16-hour exposure (IC50) of 2.4 and 4.5 mg/L, respectively. Cell signaling with rapid rise and decrease in signal was unique to arsenic cytotoxicity, a precursor of strong cytotoxicity over the longer term. In contrast with arsenic, soluble gallium(III) and indium(III) were less toxic. Whereas the oxide NPs caused low cytotoxicity, the arsenide compounds were highly inhibitory (IC50 of GaAs and InAs = 6.2 and 68 mg/L, respectively). Dissolution experiments over 7 days revealed that arsenic was fully leached from GaAs NPs, whereas only 10% of the arsenic was leached out of InAs NPs. These results indicate that the cytotoxicity of GaAs and InAs NPs is largely due to the dissolution of toxic arsenic species.

Abstract
BACKGROUND Metformin could activate adenosine monophosphate-activated protein kinase (AMPK) which was postulated as a potential therapeutic target for osteoarthritis. This study aimed to examine the effects of metformin on cartilage and pain in osteoarthritis mouse model. METHODS Eighty 10-week-old male C57BL/6 mice were randomized to 6 groups: non-operation, sham-operation, destabilization of the medial meniscus (DMM)-operation with intragastric saline/metformin, and DMM-operation with intraarticular saline/metformin. Articular cartilage degeneration was examined by scanning electron microscopy (SEM) and graded using the scoring system recommended by Osteoarthritis Research Society International (OARSI). Mechanical withdrawal threshold and hind paw weight distribution were measured to assess the pain-related behavior. Cell Counting Kit-8 assay, quantificational real-time polymerase chain reaction, and western blot analysis were conducted to examine the anabolic and anti-catabolic effect of metformin and the role of AMPK in mediating its effects on interleukin-1β stimulated primary mice chondrocytes. RESULTS Compared with mice receiving intragastric and intraarticular saline, mice in both intragastric and intraarticular metformin displayed attenuated articular cartilage degeneration, indicated by less cartilage damage under SEM and significantly lower OARSI scores. A higher paw withdrawal threshold and a decreased weight-bearing asymmetry were observed in the intragastric and intraarticular metformin mice compared with their corresponding saline groups in DMM model of osteoarthritis. In vitro experiments showed that metformin not only decreased the level of matrix metalloproteinase 13, but also elevated type II collagen production through activating AMPK pathway. CONCLUSIONS Metformin attenuates osteoarthritis structural worsening and modulates pain, suggesting its potential for osteoarthritis prevention or treatment.

Abstract
Purpose Colorectal cancer (CRC) is the third most common cancer, and the second leading cause of cancer death worldwide. Dysregulation of microRNAs has been shown to modulate glucose metabolic reprogramming in CRC. However, the functional role of miR-4999-5p in the CRC glucose metabolic shift has not been characterized. Patients and Methods The levels of miR-4999-5p and PRKAA2 were evaluated by RT-qPCR. Univariate and multivariate survival analyses were conducted to evaluate the prognostic value of miR-4999-5p. Cell proliferation was assessed using the CCK-8 and colony formation assays. Extracellular acidification rate, glucose uptake, cellular glucose-6-phosphate level, and lactate production were evaluated to assess the effects of miR-4999-5p on CRC glycolysis. Dual-luciferase reporter assay was conducted to investigate the direct interaction between miR-4999-5p and PRKAA2. Mouse xenograft models were established to assess the functions of miR-4999-5p in vivo. Results miR-4999-5p was highly expressed in CRC tissues and cell lines. In addition, miR-4999-5p was associated with tumor differentiation and TNM stage, and elevated expression of miR-4999-5p was an independent predictor of poorer overall survival. Furthermore, miR-4999-5p promoted cell proliferation and glycolysis in CRC. miR-4999-5p targeted PRKAA2 to exert its tumor-promoting functions, and PRKAA2 knockdown rescued decreased cell proliferation and glycolysis in miR-4999-5p-silenced CRC cells. In vivo experiments showed that miR-4999-5p promoted CRC growth. Conclusion miR-4999-5p facilitated cell growth and glucose metabolic reprogramming through direct targeting of PRKAA2. Our results showed that miR-4999-5p may be a novel prognostic marker and therapeutic target for CRC.

Abstract
We investigate the influence of third-order dispersion of dispersive elements, three-photon absorption and free-carrier effects on mid-infrared time magnification via four-wave mixing (FWM) in ${{\rm Si}_{0.8}}{{\rm Ge}_{0.2}}$Si0.8Ge0.2 waveguides. It is found that the magnified waveform is seriously distorted by these factors, and conversion efficiency is decreased, mainly because of nonlinear absorption. A time lens based on FWM in ${{\rm Si}_{0.8}}{{\rm Ge}_{0.2}}$Si0.8Ge0.2 waveguides is proposed for time magnification of mid-infrared ultrashort pulses, in which the low-distortion, high-magnification in the time domain could be obtained by optimizing system parameters. These results make it possible to analyze the transient dynamic process through oscilloscopes and detectors with gigahertz bandwidth and have important applications in ultrafast process analysis, optical pulse sampling, and optical communications.

Abstract
Azoles are emerging contaminants that are resistant to biodegradation during wastewater treatment. Their presence has been widely reported in wastewater effluents and receiving waters. In this work, the potential inhibition of nitrification process by six different azole compounds in wastewater treatment plants was investigated in batch bioassays. The azoles studied included three diazoles: pyrazole (Pz); 1-methylpyrazole (MePz); 3,5-dimethylpyrazole (DMePz); and three triazoles: 1,2,4-triazole (Tz); benzotriazole (BTz); and 5-methyl benzotriazole (MeBTz). The concentration of azoles causing 50% inhibition (IC50) increased (azoles became less inhibitory) in the following order (mg L-1): BTz (1.99) < MeBTz (2.18) < Pz (2.69) < Tz (3.53) < DMePz (17.3) < MePz (49.6). No clear structure-inhibitory relationships were found using Log P and pKa as structural properties. The toxicity of any given azole may be related to the role of substituent groups on disabling/enabling binding to the active sites of metallo-enzymes in nitrifying microorganisms. This is exemplified by the low toxicity of MePz, which has a cyclic N blocked by a methyl group. The observed inhibition caused to nitrifying bacteria is more severe than their cytotoxicity to other target organisms (e.g., methanogens and heterotrophic bacteria), suggesting a specific inhibition to the copper-containing enzyme, ammonium monooxygenase, in ammonia oxidizing nitrifying microorganisms.

Abstract
OBJECTIVE Tramadol has been widely used among patients with osteoarthritis (OA); however, there is paucity of information on its cardiovascular risk. We aimed to examine the association of tramadol with risk of myocardial infarction (MI) among patients with OA. DESIGN Among OA patients aged 50-90 years without history of MI, cancer, or opioid use disorder in The Health Improvement Network database in the United Kingdom (2000-2016), three sequential propensity-score matched cohort studies were assembled, i.e., (1) patients who initiated tramadol or naproxen (negative comparator); (2) patients who initiated tramadol or diclofenac (positive comparator); and (3) patients who initiated tramadol or codeine (a commonly used weak opioid). The outcome was incident MI over six-months. RESULTS Among tramadol and naproxen initiators (n = 33,024 in each cohort), 77 (4.8/1000 person-years) and 46 (2.8/1000 person-years) incident MI occurred, respectively. The rate difference (RD) and hazard ratios (HR) for incident MI with tramadol initiation were 1.9 (95% confidence interval [CI] 0.6 to 2.3)/1000 person-years and 1.68 (95% CI 1.16 to 2.41) relative to naproxen initiation, respectively. Among tramadol and diclofenac initiators (n = 18,662 in each cohort), 58 (6.4/1000 person-years) and 47 (5.1/1000 person-years) incident MIs occurred, respectively. The corresponding RD and HR for incident MI were 1.2 (95%CI -2.1 to 14.1)/1000 person-years and 1.24 (95%CI 0.84 to 1.82), respectively. Among tramadol and codeine initiators (n = 42,722 in each cohort), 127 (6.1/1000 person-years) and 103 (5.0/1000 person-years) incident MI occurred, respectively, and the corresponding RD and HR were 1.1 (95%CI:-0.3 to 2.5)/1000 person-years and 1.23 (95%CI:0.95 to 1.60), respectively. CONCLUSIONS In this population-based cohort of patients with OA, the six-month risk of MI among initiators of tramadol was higher than that of naproxen, but comparable to, if not lower than, those of diclofenac or codeine.

Abstract
BACKGROUND To enhance awareness of the clinical features and prevention of endotracheal myiasis. CASE PRESENTATION A case of intratracheal myiasis is reported. A 61-year-old male patient with a history of laryngectomy was admitted to hospital due to tracheostomal hemorrhage of 3 h duration. Intratracheal myiasis was confirmed by bronchoscopy, and the patient underwent bronchoscopic intervention, which was complicated by a tracheal-esophageal fistula and resolved by endotracheal stenting. Twenty months after stent placement, the fistula had not healed. CONCLUSION Intratracheal myiasis has serious complications and is difficult to treat. For post-tracheostomy patients, healthcare providers and caregivers should pay attention to the care and monitoring of wounds and maintenance of a tidy, clean living environment to prevent intratracheal myiasis.

Abstract
Objective: To evaluate the safety and clinical value of combined cardiac and cerebral angiography in the diagnosis and treatment of patients with carotid artery stenosis. Methods: Clinical data of patients from May 2016 to June 2019 were collected. The patient underwent combined angiography under local anesthesia. Clinical characteristics, prognosisand complications were retrospectively analyzed. Results: A total of 45 patients with carotid artery stenosis received combined angiography, among which 12 patients had no obvious carotid artery stenosis. There were 22 cases with unilateral carotid artery stenosis, including 12 cases with mild stenosis and 10 cases with moderate to severe stenosis. There were 11 cases of bilateral stenosis, including 3 cases with mild stenosis and 8 cases with moderate to severe stenosis. 12 patients had no obvious stenosis incoronary arteries, 11 patients had single-vessel disease, 7 patients had 2-vessel disease, and 15 patients had 3-vessel disease. In the whole group of patients, surgical indications are available of 18 patients with carotid artery stenosis, 4 of the mreceived combined therapy. 2 of them under went Carotid Endarterectomy (CEA)+Percutaneous Transluminal Coronary Intervention (PCI), 2 under went Carotid Artery Stenting (CAS)+PCI. CAS+coronary artery angiography was performed in 3 cases. CEA+coronary angiography was performed in 5 cases. 5 patients received conservative treatment after combined angiography. In one case, the condition of coronary artery was so complicated that PCI was performed firstly. No cardiac or cerebrovascular complications such as myocardial infarction or cerebral infarction occurred during perioperative period. Conclusion: Combined cardio-cerebrovascular angiography is a good method to evaluate the cardiovascular and cerebrovascular in the diagnosis and treatment of patients with carotid artery stenosis, which can provide a clear diagnosis for treatment with a low complications frequency.

Abstract
Objective: To implement simultaneous treatments in patients with severe carotid artery stenosis and coronary artery disease (CAD), we sought to investigate its efficacy of reducing perioperative major adverse cardiac and cerebrovascular event (MACCE). Methods: Brain-and-Heart treatment team in Peking University International Hospital performed hybrid Digital Substraction Angiography (DSA) of carotid artery and coronary artery for 37 patients meeting the group criterion from September 2017 to February 2019.Twelve patients were diagnosed and received simultaneous treatments of severe carotid artery stenosis and coronary artery disease after hybrid DSA. We conducted the retrospective study and made analysis of these patients. Results: The diagnosis rate by simultaneous treatmentsin patients with carotid artery stenosis and coronary artery disease is 59.5% (22/37), the rate of severe carotid artery stenosis or multi-vessel CAD is 77.3% (17/22).The rate of severe carotid artery stenosis with CAD is 54.5% (12/22), therate of simultaneous treatmentsis 83.3%(10/12). Nine patients post-operative symptoms release, one patient with ischemic stroke after CABG, and two patients of medical therapy with stable symptoms. Conclusion: Simultaneous treatments in patients with severe carotid artery stenosis and coronary artery disease not only reveal the positive correlation between carotid stenosis and CAD, but also accurately evaluate severity degree or rapidly formulate scheme and reduce MACCE.

Abstract
Surface soil moisture is a key variable in the exchange of water and energy between the land surface and the atmosphere, and critical to meteorology, hydrology, and ecology. The Tibetan Plateau (TP), known as "The third pole of the world" and "Asia's water towers", exerts huge influences on and sensitive to global climates. In this situation, longer time series of soil moisture can provide sufficient information to understand the role of the TP. This paper presents the first comprehensive dataset (2002-2015) of spatio-temporal continuous soil moisture at 0.25° resolution, based on satellite-based optical (i.e. MODIS) and microwave (ECV) products using a machine learning method named general regression neural network (GRNN). The dataset itself reveals significant information on the soil moisture and its changes over the TP, and can aid to understand the potential driven mechanisms for climate change over the TP.

Abstract
Background Accumulating evidence indicates that CD36 initiates metastasis and correlates with an unfavorable prognosis in cancers. However, there are few reports regarding the roles of CD36 in initiation and metastasis of cervical cancer. Methods Using immunohistochemistry, we analyzed 133 cervical cancer samples for CD36 protein expression levels, and then investigated the correlation between changes in its expression and clinicopathologic parameters. The effect of CD36 expression on the epithelial–mesenchymal transition (EMT) in cervical cancer cells was evaluated by Western immunoblotting analysis. In vitro invasion and in vivo metastasis assays were also used to evaluate the role of CD36 in cervical cancer metastasis. Results In the present study, we confirmed that CD36 was highly expressed in cervical cancer samples relative to normal cervical tissues. Moreover, overexpression of CD36 promoted invasiveness and metastasis of cervical cancer cells in vitro and in vivo, while CD36 knockdown suppressed proliferation, migration, and invasiveness. We demonstrated that TGF-β treatment attenuated E-cadherin expression and enhanced the expression levels of CD36, vimentin, slug, snail, and twist in si-SiHa, si-HeLa, and C33a–CD36 cells, suggesting that TGF-β synergized with CD36 on EMT via active CD36 expression. We also observed that the expression levels of TGF-β in si-SiHa cells and si-HeLa cells were down-regulated, whereas the expression levels of TGF-β were up-regulated in C33a–CD36 cells. These results imply that CD36 and TGF-β interact with each other to promote the EMT in cervical cancer. Conclusions Our findings suggest that CD36 is likely to be an effective target for guiding individualized clinical therapy of cervical cancer.

Abstract
Fine spatiotemporal mapping of PM2.5 concentration in urban areas is of great significance in epidemiologic research. However, both the diversity and the complex nonlinear relationships of PM2.5 influencing factors pose challenges for accurate mapping. To address these issues, we innovatively combined social sensing data with remote sensing data and other auxiliary variables, which can bring both natural and social factors into the modeling; meanwhile, we used a deep learning method to learn the nonlinear relationships. The geospatial analysis methods were applied to realize effective feature extraction of the social sensing data and a grid matching process was carried out to integrate the spatiotemporal multi-source heterogeneous data. Based on this research strategy, we finally generated hourly PM2.5 concentration data at a spatial resolution of 0.01°. This method was successfully applied to the central urban area of Wuhan in China, which the optimal result of the 10-fold cross-validation R2 was 0.832. Our work indicated that the real-time check-in and traffic index variables can improve both quantitative and mapping results. The mapping results could be potentially applied for urban environmental monitoring, pollution exposure assessment, and health risk research.

Abstract
Aims There is an increasing demand for hip arthroplasty in China. We aimed to describe trends in in-hospital mortality after this procedure in China and to examine the potential risk factors. Patients and Methods We included 210 450 patients undergoing primary hip arthroplasty registered in the Hospital Quality Monitoring System in China between 2013 and 2016. In-hospital mortality after hip arthroplasty and its relation to potential risk factors were assessed using multivariable Poisson regression. Results During the study period, 626 inpatient deaths occurred within 30 days after hip arthroplasty. Mortality decreased from 2.9% in 2013 to 2.6% in 2016 (p for trend = 0.02). Compared with their counterparts, old age, male sex, and divorced or widowed patients had a higher rate of mortality (all p < 0.05). Risk ratio (RR) for mortality after arthroplasty for fracture was two-fold higher (RR 2.0, 95% confidence interval (CI) 1.5 to 2.6) than that for chronic disease. RRs for mortality were 3.3 (95% CI 2.7 to 3.9) and 8.2 (95% CI 6.5 to 10.4) for patients with Charlson Comorbidity Index (CCI) of 1 to 2 and CCI ≥ 3, respectively, compared with patients with CCI of 0. The rate of mortality varied according to geographical region, the lowest being in the East region (1.8%), followed by Beijing (2.1%), the North (2.9%), South-West (3.6%), South-Central (3.8%), North-East (4.1%), and North-West (5.2%) regions. Conclusion While in-hospital mortality after hip arthroplasty in China appears low and declined during the study period, discrepancies in mortality after this procedure exist according to sociodemographic factors. Healthcare resources should be allocated more to underdeveloped regions to further reduce mortality. Cite this article: Bone Joint J 2019;101-B:1209–1217

Abstract
OBJECTIVE Thiazide diuretic use is associated with higher bone mineral density (BMD) and possibly lower serum magnesium levels than loop diuretic use, and both high BMD and low serum magnesium have been linked to high prevalent knee osteoarthritis. This study aimed to compare the risk of a clinically relevant endpoint, knee replacement (KR) surgery, among initiators of thiazide and loop diuretics. DESIGN Among patients aged ≥50 years with a diagnosis of knee osteoarthritis in The Health Improvement Network (THIN) in United Kingdom, we conducted a propensity score-matched cohort study to examine the relation of thiazide diuretic initiation vs loop diuretic initiation to the risk of KR over 5 years. RESULTS Among thiazide and loop diuretic initiators (n = 3,488 for each group; mean age: 73 years; female ratio: 59%), 359 (28.6/1,000 person-years) and 283 (24.1/1,000 person-years) KRs occurred during the follow-up period, respectively. The hazard ratio (HR) of KR for thiazide diuretic initiation vs loop diuretic initiation was 1.26 (95% confidence interval [CI]: 1.08-1.47). The adherence-adjusted HR of KR for continuous use of thiazide diuretics was 1.44 (95% CI: 1.21-1.72). CONCLUSIONS In this population-based cohort of patients with knee osteoarthritis, thiazide diuretic use was associated with a higher risk of KR than loop diuretic use. This association may potentially be due to thiazide diuretics' effect on BMD and serum magnesium.

Abstract
A noteworthy challenge in actual wireless sensors is the intrinsic sensing resolution and the sensitivity associated with the response to external perturbation to be measured. To address the issue, we report the realization of enhanced sensitivity in a passive wireless sensing system, consisting of three coupled passive resonators. The input wave is exploited as an effective gain in our open system, thus the ideal parity-time (PT) symmetry can be established, rather than balancing real gain and loss. Then the third-order exceptional points are obtained in ternary PT symmetric systems. With the extrinsic perturbation imposed on any one of resonators, we demonstrate analytically and experimentally that the resonance response of the system follows the cube-root dependence on perturbation. Making use of the effective gain, our results pave a new way, to the best of our knowledge, to realize the ultra-sensitivity of a passive wireless sensing system.

Abstract
OBJECTIVE To examine the analgesic efficacy and safety of ketamine after total knee or hip arthroplasty. DESIGN Systematic review and meta-analysis. DATA SOURCES PubMed, EMBASE and Cochrane Library from inception to 22 May 2019. ELIGIBILITY CRITERIA FOR SELECTING STUDIES Randomised controlled trials comparing the efficacy and safety of ketamine with placebo for postoperative pain relief in patients undergoing total knee or hip arthroplasty. DATA EXTRACTION AND SYNTHESIS Data (ie, pain intensity, morphine consumption, gastrointestinal and psychotic adverse effects) were extracted by two reviewers independently. The Cochrane Collaboration's recommended tool was used to determine the methodological quality of included studies. RESULTS A total of 10 studies were included. One of them was rated as low quality. Compared with placebo, intravenous ketamine was effective for pain relief during 0-8-hour (weighted mean difference (WMD) -1.21, 95% CI -1.45 to -0.98, p<0.001; three studies, 149 participants) but not during 8-24-hour postoperative periods, and effective for reduction of cumulative morphine consumption during both 0-24-hour (WMD -17.76, 95% CI -31.25 to -4.27, p=0.01; five studies, 366 participants) and 0-48-hour (WMD -21.79, 95% CI -25.46 to -18.11, p<0.001; four studies, 252 participants) postoperative periods, without increasing risks of gastrointestinal or psychotic adverse effects. The limited data available for intra-articular (WMD -0.49, 95% CI -0.70 to -0.29, p<0.001; two studies, 83 participants) and epidural (WMD -2.10, 95% CI -3.30 to -0.90, p<0.001; one study, 20 participants) ketamine pointed to a significant reduction in pain intensity during 8-24-hour postoperative period. CONCLUSIONS Intravenous administration of ketamine is effective and safe for postoperative pain relief in patients undergoing total knee or hip arthroplasty. Nevertheless, the analgesic efficacy and safety of ketamine in such patients seem to vary by different administration routes and still warrant further studies to explore.

Abstract
Non-small-cell lung cancer (NSCLC) is a major cause for cancer-related deaths around the globe, partially due to the frequent recurrence and metastasis. Leucine-rich-alpha2-glycoprotein 1 (LRG1) is reportedly upregulated in several cancers including NSCLC; however, its functions in NSCLC remain elusive. We used quantitative real-time PCR and western blot assays to evaluate the expression patterns of LRG1 in tumor tissues collected from NSCLC patients, as well as NSCLC cell lines, and examined the effects of LRG1 on the proliferation, migration, and invasion of NSCLC cells. Further, we isolated exosomes from the blood of NSCLC patients, as well as NSCLC cell cultures, and assessed the impact of exosome exposure on the angiogenic capacities of human umbilical vein endothelial cells. LRG1 was upregulated in NSCLC tissues and cells and induced an enhancement of NSCLC cell proliferation, migration, and invasion. In addition, LRG1 was enriched in the exosomes derived from NSCLC tissue and cells, and mediated a proangiogenic effect via the activation of transforming growth factor β (TGF-β) pathway. Exosomal LRG1 derived from NSCLC cells promotes angiogenesis via TGF-β signaling and possesses the potential of a therapeutic target in NSCLC treatment.

Abstract
MicroRNAs (miRNAs/miRs) are small non-coding RNAs that serve a post-transcriptional regulatory role in eukaryotes. Previous studies have demonstrated that the expression of miR-34a in colorectal cancer (CRC) tissues is decreased compared with that in normal colorectal tissues. However, the role of miR-34a in the invasion and metastasis of CRC remains unclear. In the present study, the levels of miR-34a expression were measured in various CRC cell lines. The cells were transfected with miR-34a mimics or inhibitors in order to assess the proliferation rate, and the colony forming, invasive and migratory abilities. Furthermore, the protein expression levels of vimentin and early growth response protein 1 (EGR1) were examined by western blot analysis. The results revealed that the expression of miR-34a was low in SW620, RKO, LoVo and Caco-2 cell lines and high in the SW480 and SW1116 cell lines. The migration, invasion and proliferation levels of SW480 cells were facilitated by decreasing the expression of miR-34a. Transient transfection with miR-34a mimics in SW620 cells caused a notable decrease in cell migration, invasion and proliferation levels compared with the control group, and a downregulation of vimentin and upregulation of EGR1 protein expression. The present study demonstrated that miR-34a was deregulated in a highly invasive CRC cell lines, and that it may attenuate the migratory, invasive and proliferative capabilities of CRC cells by enhancing the expression of EGR1 and inhibiting that of vimentin. The results of the present study represent important progress towards understanding the mechanisms of CRC recurrence and metastasis.

Abstract
Boron compounds (1-4) containing an internal B-O bond have been found to undergo facile multistructural transformations upon irradiation at 365 or 410 nm, generating rare 8-membered B,O-heterocycles (1c-4c). In addition, 2 and 3 also undergo an intramolecular Diels-Alder addition and oxyborane elimination concomitantly, via intermediates 2b/3b, producing 2d/3d. The pathways to isomer c and product d were found to be a thermal process and a photo process, respectively.

Abstract
To investigate whether circulating tumor cells (CTCs) are detectable in patients with gestational choriocarcinoma (GC) and evaluate the prognostic value of CTC enumeration. In this multicenter study, the presence of CTCs was examined in 180 GC patients using a semi-automated NanoVelcro system, among whom 106 patients underwent CTC re-evaluation after one cycle of chemotherapy. Approximately 96% of the GC patients contained ≥2 CTCs in 7.5 mL of blood. The number of CTCs per 7.5 mL of blood was much higher in patients with distant metastases (n = 95; range, 0 to 104) than in patients without distant metastases (n = 85; range, 0 to 6). Applying a 90-patient training and 90-patient validation cohort, a cutoff value of ≥6 CTCs was defined as the prognostic threshold for progression-free survival (PFS) and overall survival (OS). The presence of ≥6 CTCs was significantly associated with worse PFS and OS (both P < 0.001). A multivariate analysis showed that the CTC number (≥6 CTCs) was the strongest predictor of OS (hazard ratio [HR], 15.8; 95% confidence interval [CI], 4.3-57.9; P < 0.001). The number of CTCs decreased after one cycle of chemotherapy; univariate analyses demonstrated that the CTC count after the first chemotherapy cycle was a strong predictor of OS (HR, 36.1; 95% CI, 4.8-271.5; P < 0.001). CTCs are a promising prognostic factor for GC. The absolute CTC count after one cycle of chemotherapy in the context of this disease is a strong predictor of chemotherapy response.

Abstract
Objective: The aim was to examine the association between dietary selenium intake and nonalcoholic fatty liver disease (NAFLD) in a large group of middle-aged and elderly Chinese persons.Method: The data included in this analysis were from a population-based study, the Xiangya Hospital Health Management Center Study. NAFLD was diagnosed by (1) imaging or histological evidence of hepatic steatosis; (2) absence of specific etiologies of NAFLD; and (3) no heavy consumption of alcohol. Dietary selenium intake was assessed using a validated semi-quantitative food frequency questionnaire. The association between dietary selenium intake and the prevalence of NAFLD was evaluated using logistic and spline regression in a cross-sectional study of 5436 subjects.Results: The prevalence of NAFLD was 36.8%. Compared with the lowest quintile, the energy-adjusted odds ratios for NAFLD were 1.27 (95% confidence interval [CI], 1.07-1.52), 1.30 (95% CI, 1.09-1.55), and 1.58 (95% CI, 1.33-1.89) for the third, fourth, and fifth quintiles of selenium intake, respectively, and there was a positive dose-response relationship (r = 0.88, p for trend = 0.008). Similar results were observed for men and women separately. The findings were not materially altered by adjustment for potential confounders (i.e., age, gender, body mass index, smoking status, diabetes, hypertension, activity level, nutritional supplements, energy intake, fat intake, fiber intake, cholesterol and saturated fatty acid intake).Conclusions: In this middle-aged and elderly population, subjects with higher dietary selenium intake, even below the recommended nutrient intake in China, had higher prevalence of NAFLD in a dose-response relationship manner.

Abstract
OBJECTIVE A recent randomized clinical trial reported that repeated intra-articular corticosteroids (IACs) were associated with a greater cartilage loss. This study aimed to examine the relation of IACs to knee radiographic osteoarthritis (ROA) progression in a real-world setting. DESIGN A cohort that initiated IACs and a comparison cohort without IACs from participants with mild to moderate knee ROA in the Osteoarthritis Initiative (OAI) were assembled (from 0-month to 48-month). Two measures of knee ROA progression were assessed during the follow-up period: (1) an increase in Kellgren and Lawrence (KL) grade by ≥1 grade or having a knee replacement (i.e., KL grade worsening); and (2) a decrease in joint space width (JSW) by ≥0.7 mm or having a knee replacement (i.e., JSW worsening). The associations of IACs initiation using a propensity-score matched cohort study and continuous IACs using marginal structural models with the risk of knee ROA progression were examined. RESULTS Among 684 propensity-score matched participants at baseline (148 IACs initiators, 536 comparators), 65 knees (21.7/100 person-years) in the IACs initiation cohort and 90 knees (7.1/100 person-years) in the comparison cohort experienced KL worsening. The hazard ratios (HRs) of KL worsening from IACs initiation and continuous IACs were 3.02 (95% confidence interval [CI], 2.19-4.16) and 4.67 (95% CI, 2.92-7.47), respectively. The corresponding HRs of JSW worsening were 2.93 (95% CI, 2.13-4.02) and 3.26 (95% CI, 1.78-5.96), respectively. All HRs for continuous use of IACs were further away from the null. CONCLUSIONS IACs, especially continuous IACs, may be associated with an increased risk of knee ROA progression.

Abstract
Objective: To compare the expression of leukemia inhibitory factor (LIF), interleukin-6 (IL-6) and vascular endothelial growth factor (VEGF) in tissue and fluid samples from patients with endometriosis, and investigate whether LIF and IL-6 regulate VEGF in human endometriotic stromal cells (ESC). Methods: The levels of VEGF, LIF, IL-6 in serum, peritoneal fluid of patients with and without endometriosis were measured by ELISA. The mRNA of these three factors in the ectopic and eutopic endometrial tissue and stromal cells were measured by real-time PCR. ESC derived from ovarian endometriomas were cultured using the method of primary cell culture with LIF and IL-6, and the level of VEGF mRNA and protein were measured by the method of real-time PCR and ELISA respectively. Results: VEGF and IL-6 concentration were 1.2 and 1.3 times higher in the serum of patients with endometriosis than in the control group [(94±19) versus (78±17) ng/L; (45±14) versus (35±9) ng/L; all P<0.05]. VEGF and IL-6 concentration were 1.2 and 1.4 times higher in the peritoneal fluid of patients with endometriosis than in the control group [(110±25) versus (91±21) ng/L; (69±20) versus (49±15) ng/L; all P<0.05]. VEGF and IL-6 concentrations in peritoneal fluid of patients with endometriosis were 1.2 and 1.5 times higher than in serum (all P<0.01). VEGF, LIF and IL-6 mRNA expression were 2.2, 8.6, 44.7 times higher in ESC compared with the matching eutopic endometrial stromal cells (all P<0.01). LIF and IL-6 mRNA were 2.0 and 64.8 times higher in ectopic endometrial tissue than the matching eutopic endometrial tissue (all P<0.05).ESC cultured with LIF, IL-6 and LIF+IL-6 induce VEGF protein secretion [(106±18), (124±30), (140±27) ng/L] by 1.3, 1.5 and 1.7 times (all P<0.05). Conclusion: Overexpression of LIF and IL-6 may synergistically contribute to upregulation of VEGF in ESC and promote development of endometriosis.

Abstract
AIM To systematically examine the existing literature on the associations between chondrocalcinosis (CC) and osteoarthritis (OA) at different joints, and to quantify such associations through meta-analysis. METHODS PubMed, Embase and Scopus databases were searched through from inception to June 2017. Cohort, case-control or cross-sectional studies were included if they examined the association between CC and OA. Data on the odds ratios (OR) and their 95% confidence intervals (CI) of the prevalence or progression of OA between the CC group and non-CC group with respect to the same joint were extracted. RESULTS A total of 14 studies were identified. Twelve studies were eligible for assessing the association between knee CC and knee OA. The combined data showed a positive association between them (OR = 2.84; 95% CI, 2.12-3.81; P < 0.001). Three studies were eligible for assessing the association between hip CC and hip OA. The data on the OR could only be extracted from one study (OR = 0.92; 95% CI, 0.68-1.24; P = 0.59). Two studies were eligible for assessing the association between hand CC and hand OA, and the data on the OR could only be extracted from one study which reported significant associations between CC and OA at the metacarpophalangeal joint (OR = 4.75; 95% CI, 2.12-10.64; P < 0.001) and the wrist joint (OR = 4.44; 95% CI, 3.56-5.54; P < 0.001). CONCLUSION This study established a strong association between knee CC and knee OA. However, the associations between CC and OA at the hip or hand still remain controversial and warrant further study.

Abstract
Two Pd(II) complexes based on tetradentate chelate ligands with either a 1,2,4-triazolyl (Pd1) or 1,2,3-triazolyl (Pd2) unit were synthesized, and their structure-property relationships were studied. Both Pd1 and Pd2 are rare bright deep blue Pd(II) phosphors with contrasting properties. Pd1 displays stimuli-responsive luminescence in response to UV irradiation, concentration, or temperature change, which is ascribed to the facile switching of monomer to excimer emission. In contrast, a similar stimuli-responsive luminescence was not observed for Pd2. Crystal structures and time-dependent density functional theory computational studies established that the excimer formation of Pd1 is caused by electronically favored intermolecular π-π interactions and less steric protection of the Pd core because of the position of its alkyl chains, compared to Pd2. In solution, the excimer emission of Pd1 shows a much greater sensitivity toward oxygen than the monomer emission with a very large Stern-Volmer constant ( Ksv) that is more than twice that of the monomer emission. Both Pd(II) complexes are found to be outstanding oxygen sensors in ethyl cellulose films with superior sensitivity ( Ksvapp = 0.228-0.346 Torr-1) over their Pt(II) equivalents ( Ksvapp = 0.00674-0.0110 Torr-1), owing to their long phosphorescence decay lifetimes. Furthermore, Pd1 shows an excellent photostability, compared to the Pt(II) analogue, making it one of the best and highly robust oxygen sensors based on cyclometalated metal complexes.

Abstract
OBJECTIVE To evaluate the etiologic heterogeneity between medial and lateral tibiofemoral radiographic osteoarthritis (ROA). METHODS Knees without medial or lateral tibiofemoral ROA at baseline were followed for 60-month in Multicenter Osteoarthritis Study (MOST) and for 48-month in Osteoarthritis Initiative (OAI). We examined the relation of previously reported risk factors to incident medial and lateral tibiofemoral ROA separately and determined the etiology heterogeneity with a ratio of rate ratios (RRs) (i.e., the RR for medial tibiofemoral ROA divided by the RR for lateral tibiofemoral ROA) using a duplication method for Cox proportional hazard regression. RESULTS Of 2,016 participants in MOST, 436 and 162 knees developed medial or lateral tibiofemoral ROA, respectively. Obesity and varus malalignment were 95% and 466% more strongly associated with incident medial tibiofemoral ROA than with lateral tibiofemoral ROA, respectively (ratios of RRs, 1.95 [95% confidence interval (CI):1.05-3.62] and 5.66 [95% CI:3.20-10.0]). In contrast, the associations of female sex and valgus malalignment with incident medial tibiofemoral ROA were weaker or in an opposite direction compared with lateral tibiofemoral Osteoarthritis (OA) (ratios of RRs, 0.40 [95% CI:0.26-0.63] and 0.20 [95% CI:0.12-0.34], respectively). Older age tended to show a weaker association with incident medial tibiofemoral ROA than with incident lateral tibiofemoral ROA. No heterogeneity was observed for the relation of race, knee injury, or contralateral knee ROA. These findings were closely replicated in OAI. CONCLUSION Risk factor profiles for medial and lateral tibiofemoral ROA are different. These results can provide a framework for the development of targeted prevention and potential treatment strategies for specific knee OA subtypes.

Abstract
IMPORTANCE An American Academy of Orthopaedic Surgeons guideline recommends tramadol for patients with knee osteoarthritis, and an American College of Rheumatology guideline conditionally recommends tramadol as first-line therapy for patients with knee osteoarthritis, along with nonsteroidal anti-inflammatory drugs. OBJECTIVE To examine the association of tramadol prescription with all-cause mortality among patients with osteoarthritis. DESIGN, SETTING, AND PARTICIPANTS Sequential, propensity score-matched cohort study at a general practice in the United Kingdom. Individuals aged at least 50 years with a diagnosis of osteoarthritis in the Health Improvement Network database from January 2000 to December 2015, with follow-up to December 2016. EXPOSURES Initial prescription of tramadol (n = 44 451), naproxen (n = 12 397), diclofenac (n = 6512), celecoxib (n = 5674), etoricoxib (n = 2946), or codeine (n = 16 922). MAIN OUTCOMES AND MEASURES All-cause mortality within 1 year after initial tramadol prescription, compared with 5 other pain relief medications. RESULTS After propensity score matching, 88 902 patients were included (mean [SD] age, 70.1 [9.5] years; 61.2% were women). During the 1-year follow-up, 278 deaths (23.5/1000 person-years) occurred in the tramadol cohort and 164 (13.8/1000 person-years) occurred in the naproxen cohort (rate difference, 9.7 deaths/1000 person-years [95% CI, 6.3-13.2]; hazard ratio [HR], 1.71 [95% CI, 1.41-2.07]), and mortality was higher for tramadol compared with diclofenac (36.2/1000 vs 19.2/1000 person-years; HR, 1.88 [95% CI, 1.51-2.35]). Tramadol was also associated with a higher all-cause mortality rate compared with celecoxib (31.2/1000 vs 18.4/1000 person-years; HR, 1.70 [95% CI, 1.33-2.17]) and etoricoxib (25.7/1000 vs 12.8/1000 person-years; HR, 2.04 [95% CI, 1.37-3.03]). No statistically significant difference in all-cause mortality was observed between tramadol and codeine (32.2/1000 vs 34.6/1000 person-years; HR, 0.94 [95% CI, 0.83-1.05]). CONCLUSIONS AND RELEVANCE Among patients aged 50 years and older with osteoarthritis, initial prescription of tramadol was associated with a significantly higher rate of mortality over 1 year of follow-up compared with commonly prescribed nonsteroidal anti-inflammatory drugs, but not compared with codeine. However, these findings may be susceptible to confounding by indication, and further research is needed to determine if this association is causal.

Abstract
Background With the increasing number of annotated long noncoding RNAs (lncRNAs) from the genome, researchers are continually updating their understanding of lncRNAs. Recently, thousands of lncRNAs have been reported to be associated with ribosomes in mammals. However, their biological functions or mechanisms are still unclear. Results In this study, we tried to investigate the sequence features involved in the ribosomal association of lncRNA. Conclusion To our knowledge, this is the first study to characterize ribosome-associated lncRNAs and ribosome-free lncRNAs from the perspective of sequence features. These sequence features that were identified in this study may shed light on the biological mechanism of the ribosomal association and provide important clues for functional analysis of lncRNAs. Abstract
OBJECTIVE To investigate the efficacy and safety of the pulsed electromagnetic field (PEMF) therapy in treating osteoarthritis (OA). DESIGN Meta-analysis. DATA SOURCES PubMed, Embase, the Cochrane Library and Web of Science were searched through 13 October 2017. ELIGIBILITY CRITERIA FOR SELECTING STUDIES Randomised controlled trials compared the efficacy of PEMF therapy with sham control in patients with OA. DATA EXTRACTION AND SYNTHESIS Pain, function, adverse effects and characteristics of participants were extracted. RevMan V.5.2 was used to perform statistical analyses. RESULTS Twelve trials were included, among which ten trials involved knee OA, two involved cervical OA and one involved hand OA. The PEMF group showed more significant pain alleviation than the sham group in knee OA (standardised mean differences (SMD)=-0.54, 95% CI -1.04 to -0.04, p=0.03) and hand OA (SMD=-2.85, 95% CI -3.65 to -2.04, p<0.00001), but not in cervical OA. Similarly, comparing with the sham-control treatment, significant function improvement was observed in the PEMF group in both knee and hand OA patients (SMD=-0.34, 95% CI -0.53 to -0.14, p=0.0006, and SMD=-1.49, 95% CI -2.12 to -0.86, p<0.00001, respectively), but not in patients with cervical OA. Sensitivity analyses suggested that the exposure duration <=30 min per session exhibited better effects compared with the exposure duration >30 min per session. Three trials reported adverse events, and the combined results showed that there was no significant difference between PEMF and the sham group. CONCLUSIONS PEMF could alleviate pain and improve physical function for patients with knee and hand OA, but not for patients with cervical OA. Meanwhile, a short PEMF treatment duration (within 30 min) may achieve more favourable efficacy. However, given the limited number of study available in hand and cervical OA, the implication of this conclusion should be cautious for hand and cervical OA.

Abstract
Objectives The role of mechanical stress and transforming growth factor beta 1 (TGF-β1) is important in the initiation and progression of osteoarthritis (OA). However, the underlying molecular mechanisms are not clearly known. Methods In this study, TGF-β1 from osteoclasts and knee joints were analyzed using a co-cultured cell model and an OA rat model, respectively. Five patients with a femoral neck fracture (four female and one male, mean 73.4 years (68 to 79)) were recruited between January 2015 and December 2015. Results showed that TGF-β1 was significantly upregulated in osteoclasts by cyclic loading in a time- and dose-dependent mode. The osteoclasts were subjected to cyclic loading before being co-cultured with chondrocytes for 24 hours. Results A significant decrease in the survival rate of co-cultured chondrocytes was found. Terminal deoxynucleotidyl transferase-mediated deoxyuridine triphosphate nick end labelling (TUNEL) assay demonstrated that mechanical stress-induced apoptosis occurred significantly in co-cultured chondrocytes but administration of the TGF-β1 receptor inhibitor, SB-505124, can significantly reverse these effects. Abdominal administration of SB-505124 can attenuate markedly articular cartilage degradation in OA rats. Conclusion Mechanical stress-induced overexpression of TGF-β1 from osteoclasts is responsible for chondrocyte apoptosis and cartilage degeneration in OA. Abstract
“Dichotomic” substituents such as PhBMes2 and py that have opposite inductive effects and can form an internal B ← N bond have been found to have a distinct impact on the electronic and photophysical properties of regioisomers with an unsymmetrical backbone.
1,3-Dipolar cycloaddition of pyrido[2,1-a]isoindole with internal alkynes functionalized by a BMes2ph and an N-aromatic heterocycle leads to the formation of two types of regioisomers (major a and minor b) that have distinct physical and photophysical properties. Examination on 5 pairs of regioisomers unveils that the major isomers consistently have a smaller optical energy gap and emission energy than the corresponding minor isomers, which is greatly amplified by the formation of an internal B ← N bond. The regioisomers with a B ← N bond display contrasting temperature-dependent structural dynamics and response to fluoride ions, owing to an entropy-driven or fluoride initiated B ← N bond rupture/ring-opening process and the different B ← N bond strength. The opposite inductive effect and the Lewis pair properties of the dichotomic substituent units are responsible for the contrasting properties of the regioisomers in this system.

Abstract
Background Stromal cell-derived factor 1 (SDF-1) is an important chemokine for stem cell mobilization, and plays a critical role in mobilization of mesenchymal stem cells (MSCs). Bone morphogenetic protein 2 (BMP-2) plays a critical role in osteogenesis of MSCs. However, the use of SDF-1 and BMP-2 in bone tissue engineering is limited by their short half-lives and rapid degradation in vitro and in vivo. Methods The chitosan oligosaccharide/heparin nanoparticles (CSO/H NPs) were first prepared via self-assembly. Chitosan-agarose-gelatin (CAG) Scaffolds were then synthesized via gelation technology using cross-linked chitosan, agarose, and gelatin, and were modified by CSO/H NPs. The encapsulation efficiency and release kinetics of SDF-1 and BMP-2 were quantified using an enzyme-linked immunosorbent assay. A CCK-8 assays were used to evaluate biocompatibility of NP-modified scaffolds. The biological activity of the loaded SDF-1 and BMP-2 was evaluated using the transwell migration assay and osteogenic induction assay. An animal MSC recruitment model was used to study the ability of SDF-1 released from NP-modified scaffolds to induce migration of MSCs. Results In this study, we developed a novel nanoparticle-modified CAG scaffold for the delivery of SDF-1 and BMP-2. CCK-8 assays demonstrated excellent biocompatibility of NP-modified scaffolds. In addition, we investigated the release of SDF-1 and BMP-2 from NP-modified scaffolds, and evaluated the effect of released SDF-1 on MSC migration. The effect of released BMP-2 on MSC osteogenesis was also examined. In vitro cell migration assays showed that SDF-1 released from NP-modified scaffolds retained its migration activity; osteogenesis studies demonstrated that released BMP-2 exhibited a strong ability to induce differentiation towards osteoblasts. Our in vivo recruitment assays showed continuous chemotactic response of MSCs to SDF-1 released from the NP-modified scaffold. Conclusion The simplicity of synthesizing CSO/H NP-modified CAG scaffolds, combined with its high cytokine loading capacity and sustained release effect, renders NP-modified CAG scaffold an attractive candidate for sustained release of SDF-1 and BMP-2 to promote bone repair and regeneration.

Abstract
Gestational choriocarcinoma (GC) is a highly aggressive tumor. In our study, we systematically investigated EpCAM/CD147 expression characteristics in patients with GC and assessed the role of circulating tumor cells (CTCs) in predicting chemotherapy response and disease progression. GC tissues were positive for either epithelial cellular adhesion molecule (EpCAM) or CD147, and all samples exhibited strong human chorionic gonadotropin (HCG) expression. Among all the recruited patients (n = 115), 103 had at least 1 CTC in a 7.5‐mL peripheral blood sample, and the percentage of patients with ≥4 CTCs in a particular FIGO stage group increased with a higher FIGO stage (p < 0.001). Furthermore, the pretreatment CTC count was related to tumor size (r = 0.225, p = 0.015) and the number of metastases (r = 0.603, p < 0.001). A progression analysis showed that among the 115 included patients who qualified for further examination, 52 of the 64 patients defined as progressive had ≥4 pretreatment CTCs, while only 7 of the 51 non‐progressive patients had ≥4 pretreatment CTCs (p < 0.001). In multivariate analysis, CTCs (≥4) remained the strongest predictor of PFS when other prognostic markers, FIGO score and FIGO stage were included. Moreover, based on the chemotherapy response, patients with ≥4 CTCs were more likely to be resistant to chemotherapy than those with <4 CTCs (P < 0.001). These findings demonstrates the feasibility of CTC detection in cases of GC by adopting EpCAM/CD147 antibodies together as capturing antibodies. The CTC count is a promising indicator in the evaluation of biological activities and the chemotherapy response in GC patients. What's new? Gestational choriocarcinoma tumor cells tend to spread to distant organs by hematogenous dissemination. This study shows that circulating tumor cells (CTCs) in patients with gestational choriocarcinomas can be readily captured by targeting the highly expressed membrane antigens EpCAM and CD147. Elevated CTC levels, defined as 4 or more CTCs per 7.5 ml of peripheral blood, were found to predict chemotherapy resistance and to more effectively predict disease progression where compared with traditional β‐human chorionic gonadotropin. The findings suggest that CTC enumeration could be used to stratify gestational choriocarcinoma patients for personalized clinical intervention.

Abstract
Hyperglycemia-induced impairment of angiogenesis contributes to the unfavorable prognosis of myocardial ischemia in long-standing diabetes mellitus. The underlying mechanism remains largely unknown and therapeutic strategies thereby limited. In the present study, we investigated the possible involvement of thioredoxin-interacting protein (TXNIP) and Wnt/β-catenin signaling in the context, and their possible relation was also explored. STZ induced diabetic mice were subjected to myocardial infarction (MI). Adenovirus expressing shTXNIP, shCtnnb1 (β-catenin) driven by VE-Cadherin promoter was administered intramyocardially immediately after MI. Cardiac function, histology, and molecular analyses were performed at predetermined time points. Increased endothelial expression of TXNIP was found in diabetic hearts, which correlated well with reduced nuclear β-catenin expression, insufficient angiogenesis, aggravated cardiac remodeling, and poor survival. Endothelial-specific knockdown of TXNIP significantly rescued β-catenin activity, together with increased angiogenesis, preserved cardiac function, and improved survival rate. Moreover, additional knockdown of β-catenin essentially reversed the beneficial effects of TXNIP downregulation. In vitro, high glucose treatment of human umbilical vein endothelial cells (HUVECs) increased TXNIP levels and ROS concentration, while it reduced β-catenin activity. Silencing TXNIP or ROS scavenger restored the high glucose induced reduction of Wnt/β-catenin activity in HUVECs. In addition, either reduction of TXNIP expression or supplementation of exogenous Wnt3a improved the HUVECs quantity and migration under high glucose conditions. Diabetes-induced increase of TXNIP expression in the endothelium contributes to impaired angiogenesis after MI, especially via the elevation of ROS and the impaired Wnt/β-catenin signaling. Targeting TXNIP-ROS-Wnt is a promising strategy in improving the prognosis.

Abstract
In recent years, the incidence and mortality of colorectal cancer (CRC) have been on a global upward trend. There is an urgent need for effective tools to prevent and treat CRC and reduce morbidity and mortality of CRC patients. Recent evidence suggests that programmed cell death 4 (PDCD4), a novel tumor suppressor gene, inhibits tumor progression at transcriptional and translational levels and regulates multiple signal transduction pathways. However, little is known about the precise mechanisms regulating PDCD4 expression in CRC. In addition, several studies have demonstrated that the expression of in CRC is down-regulated or even absent. PDCD4 is therefore considered to be an independent prognostic factor in CRC and may be a potential support diagnostic tool for distinguishing in normal colon tissue, benign adenoma and CRC. This review will focus on the expression of PDCD4 in CRC and the relevant molecular mechanisms.

Abstract
OBJECTIVES To examine the associations between serum magnesium (Mg) concentration with the prevalence of metabolic syndrome (MetS), diabetes mellitus (DM), hypertension (HP) and hyperuricaemia (HU) in patients with radiographic knee osteoarthritis (OA). METHODS The present study was conducted at the Health Management Center of Xiangya Hospital. Radiographic OA was evaluated for patients aged over 40 years with basic characteristics and blood biochemical assessment. Serum Mg concentration was measured using the chemiluminescence method. MetS, DM, HP and HU were diagnosed based on standard protocols. The associations between serum Mg concentration with MetS, DM, HP and HU were evaluated by conducting multivariable adjusted logistic regression. RESULTS A total of 962 patients with radiographic knee OA were included. Compared with the lowest quintile, the multivariable adjusted ORs and related 95% CIs of DM were 0.40 (95% CI 0.23 to 0.70, p=0.001), 0.33 (95% CI 0.18 to 0.60, p<0.001), 0.27 (95% CI 0.14 to 0.52, p<0.001) and 0.22 (95% CI 0.11 to 0.44, p<0.001) in the second, third, fourth and highest quintiles of serum Mg, respectively (p for trend <0.001); the multivariable adjusted ORs of HU were 0.33 (95% CI 0.19 to 0.59, p<0.001), 0.52 (95% CI 0.30 to 0.91, p=0.022) and 0.39 (95% CI 0.22 to 0.70, p=0.001) in the third, fourth and highest quintiles of serum Mg, respectively (p for trend <0.001); and the multivariable adjusted ORs of MetS were 0.59 (95% CI 0.36 to 0.94, p=0.027) in the second and 0.56 (95% CI 0.34 to 0.93, p=0.024) in the highest quintiles of serum Mg. However, the inverse association between serum Mg and the prevalence of MetS was non-linear (p for trend=0.067). There was no significant association between serum Mg and HP in patients with OA. CONCLUSIONS The serum Mg concentration was inversely associated with the prevalence of MetS, DM and HU in patients with radiographic knee OA. LEVEL OF EVIDENCE Level III, cross-sectional study.
