Abstract
Collagens are abundant structural proteins found in both mammalian and marine species, and attractive biomaterials used in various fields. Jellyfish collagen-based products have become increasingly popular because of their clinically proven health benefits such as the effects of skin wound healing and immune stimulation. To develop detection tools for jellyfish collagen, we generated four monoclonal antibodies, MCOL1, 2, 3, and 4, by immunizing mice with moon jellyfish collagen. The nucleotide and amino acid sequences of the variable regions of the monoclonal antibodies were determined. The antibody-binding kinetics toward collagens from moon jellyfish were evaluated using a surface plasmon resonance (SPR) biosensor, and the binding specificity was evaluated in comparison with binding to collagens from edible jellyfish, fish scales, and pig and cow skins. MCOL1, 3, and 4 specifically bound to moon jellyfish collagen, whereas MCOL2 bound to both moon and edible jellyfish collagens. Considering the results showing that the SPR responses of MCOL2 binding were greater than those seen with the other antibodies, MCOL2 could recognize the common and repetitive sequences of the two jellyfish collagens. Therefore, this monoclonal antibody will be most applicable for detecting jellyfish collagen.

Abstract
Collagen and its hydrolysates have high bioavailability, good biocompatibility, biodegradability, and biological activity which has meant that they have been widely used in food, medicine, cosmetics, and other industries. Although the properties and applications of collagen have been reviewed recently, few studies have focused on aquatic collagen. To provide readers with a deeper understanding of aquatic collagen, this review addresses the structure and properties of aquatic collagen and compares them with mammalian collagen, as well as the differences between collagen, gelatin, and collagen peptides. In contrast to mammalian collagen, aquatic collagen prevents zoonotic diseases, reduces environmental pollution, improves the utilization of aquatic resources, and facilitates the extraction and separation of active oligopeptides. Additionally, methods for screening functional peptides using in vitro digestion have been introduced. Finally, the review focuses on the applications of collagen and its derivatives in food preservation (packaging films, coatings, additives, and antifreeze peptides), drug delivery (microcapsules, emulsions, nanoparticles, and hydrogels), nutrition, and healthcare.

Abstract
To investigate the anti-inflammatory effects of collagen peptides, collagen peptides from cod skin were prepared to assess their in vitro anti-inflammatory effects and in vivo efficacy against ulcerative colitis. The results show that collagen peptides demonstrated anti-inflammatory effects by inhibiting the secretion of pro-inflammatory cytokines and reducing oxidative stress in vitro. In vivo, collagen peptides significantly reduced colonic tissue damage, modulated serum cytokine balance, increased the expression of tight junction proteins ZO-1, Occludin, and Claudin-1 in colon tissue, enhanced the abundance of beneficial bacteria while reducing harmful bacteria, and restored microbial balance. In addition, collagen peptides ameliorated colitis in vivo by inhibiting the phosphorylation of NF-κB p65, IκBα and p38 MAPK in the NF-κB/MAPK signaling pathway. Based on these findings, collagen peptides could serve as potential therapeutic agents for managing ulcerative colitis.

Abstract
The fisheries and aquaculture industry are known for generating substantial waste or by-products, often underutilized, or relegated to low-value purposes. However, this overlooked segment harbors a rich repository of valuable bioactive materials of which have a broad-spectrum of high-value applications. As the blue economy gains momentum and fisheries expand, sustainable exploitation of these aquatic resources is increasingly prioritized. In this review, we present a comprehensive overview of technology-enabled methods for extracting and transforming aquatic waste into valuable biomaterials and their recent advances in regenerative medicine applications, focusing on marine collagen, chitin/chitosan, calcium phosphate and bioactive-peptides. We discuss the inherent bioactive qualities of these "waste-to-resource" aquatic biomaterials and identify opportunities for their use in regenerative medicine to advance healthcare while achieving the Sustainable Development Goals.

Abstract
This review is focused on the research, innovation and technological breakthroughs on marine invertebrate collagens and their applications. The findings reveal that research dates back to the 1970s, and after a period of reduced activity, interest in collagens from several marine invertebrate groups was renewed around 2008, likely driven by the increased commercial interest in these biomolecules of marine origin. Research and development are predominantly reported from China and Japan, highlighting significant research interest in cnidarians (jellyfish), echinoderms (sea cucumbers, sea urchins and starfish), molluscs (squid and cuttlefish) and sponges. Co-word analysis of the literature highlights applications in regenerative medicine, the properties of hydrolysates, and biology and biochemistry studies. Innovation and the technological landscape, however, focus on fewer taxonomic groups, possibly reflecting the challenge of sustainably sourcing raw materials, with a higher number of patents coming from Asia. Globally, jellyfish collagen is the most prominent marine invertebrate source, while Asia also emphasizes the use of collagens derived from molluscs and sea cucumbers. Europe, despite fewer patents, explores a broader range of taxonomic groups. Globally, key applications registered are mostly in medical, dental and toiletry areas, with peptide preparations spanning multiple animal groups. The food domain is notably relevant for molluscs and sea cucumbers. Market trends show a strong presence of cosmetic and supplement products, aligning with market reports that predict a growing demand for marine collagens in cosmetics and personalized nutrition, particularly in targeted health supplements.

Abstract
Although the multidisciplinary area of liver tissue engineering is in continuous progress, research in this field is still focused on developing an ideal liver tissue template. Innovative strategies are required to improve membrane stability and bioactivity. In our study, sustainable biomimetic membranes were developed by blending methacrylated chitosan (CSMA) with jellyfish collagen (jCol) for liver tissue engineering applications. The in vitro biological behaviour demonstrated the capability of the developed membranes to create a suitable milieu to enable hepatocyte growth and differentiation. The functionalization of chitosan together with the biocompatibility of marine collagen and the intrinsic membrane properties offered the ideal biochemical, topographical, and mechanical cues to the cells. Thanks to the enhanced CSMA/jCol membranes' characteristics, hepatocytes on such biomaterials exhibited improved growth, viability, and active liver-specific functions when compared to the cell fate achieved on CSMA membranes. Our study provides new insights about the influence of membrane properties on liver cells behaviour for the design of novel instructive biomaterials. The enrichment of functionalized chitosan with marine collagen represents a promising and innovative approach for the development of an appropriate platform for hepatic tissue engineering.

Abstract
This study assessed the efficacy of an Ammodaucus leucotrichus seed extract to treat rheumatoid arthritis in rat models of this disease. Rheumatoid arthritis was induced in rats using two methods: immunization with 100 µL of Complete Freund Adjuvant (CFA) and immunization with 100 µL of a 3 mg/ml solution of type II collagen (CII) from chicken cartilage. The therapeutic potential of the extract was assessed at different doses (150, 300, and 600 mg/kg/day for 21 days in the CII-induced arthritis model and for 14 days in the CFA-induced arthritis model) and compared with methotrexate (MTX; 0.2 mg/kg for the same periods), a commonly used drug for rheumatoid arthritis treatment in humans. In both models (CII-induced arthritis and CFA-induced arthritis), walking distance, step length, intra-step distance and footprint area were improved following treatment with the A. leucotrichus seed extract (all concentrations) and MTX compared with untreated animals. Both treatments increased the serum concentration of glutathione and reduced that of complement C3, malondialdehyde and myeloperoxidase. Radiographic data and histological analysis indicated that cartilage destruction was reduced already with the lowest dose of the extract (100 mg/kg/dose) in both models. These results show the substantial antiarthritic potential of the A. leucotrichus seed extract, even at the lowest dose, suggesting that it may be a promising alternative therapy for rheumatoid arthritis and joint inflammation. They also emphasize its efficacy at various doses, providing impetus for more research on this extract as a potential therapeutic agent for arthritis.

Abstract
The consumption of animal products has witnessed a significant increase over the years, leading to a growing need for industries to adopt strict waste control measures to mitigate environmental impacts. The disposal of animal waste in landfill can result in diverse and potentially hazardous decomposition by-products. Animal by-products, derived from meat, poultry, seafood and fish industries, offer a substantial raw material source for collagen and gelatin production due to their high protein content. Collagen, being a major protein component of animal tissues, represents an abundant resource that finds application in various chemical and material industries. The demand for collagen-based products continues to grow, yet the availability of primary material remains limited and insufficient to meet projected needs. Consequently, repurposing waste materials that contain collagen provides an opportunity to meet this need while at the same time minimizing the amount of waste that is dumped. This review examines the potential to extract value from the collagen content present in animal-derived waste and by-products. It provides a systematic evaluation of different species groups and discusses various approaches for processing and fabricating repurposed collagen. This review specifically focuses on collagen-based research, encompassing an examination of its physical and chemical properties, as well as the potential for chemical modifications. We have detailed how the research and knowledge built on collagen structure and function will drive the new initiatives that will lead to the development of new products and opportunities in the future. Additionally, it highlights emerging approaches for extracting high-quality protein from waste and discusses efforts to fabricate collagen-based materials leading to the development of new and original products within the chemical, biomedical and physical science-based industries.

Abstract
Jellyfish are known for experiencing periodic blooms in population, which occur when their density increases suddenly. The present study assessed the level of heavy metals and proximate composition in the jellyfish Lobonemoides robustus collected from Cox's Bazar coast of Bangladesh. This is the first study conducted in Bangladesh. Most of the studied metals were not possible to detect in L. robustus samples because concentrations were below the detection limit. Ca, Na, Se, and Mg were found to have safe levels in the L. robustus while the amount of Pb was recorded 0.39 ppm. The findings of Target Hazard Quotient, and Carcinogenic Risk indicate that the L. robustus is safe for human consumption (both for children and adults). Hence, it is suitable for consumption and can be exported. This study emphasizes the need for regular marine environment monitoring to ensure that the seafood harvested from these waters is safe for consumption.

Abstract
The southern catfish (Silurus meridionalis) is an economically important carnivorous freshwater fish in China. In this study, we compared the properties of skin collagen from southern catfish fed with raw food (RF) and cooked food (CF). The skin collagen yield in the RF group (8.66 ± 0.11%) was significantly higher than that of the CF group (8.00 ± 0.27%). SDS-PAGE, circular dichroism spectroscopy, and FTIR analyses revealed that the collagen extracted from southern catfish skin in both groups was type I collagen, with a unique triple helix structure and high purity. The thermal denaturation temperature of collagen in the RF group (35.20 ± 0.11 °C) was significantly higher than that of the CF group (34.51 ± 0.25 °C). The DPPH free radical scavenging rates were 68.30 ± 2.41% in the RF collagen and 61.78 ± 3.91% in the CF collagen, which was higher than that found in most fish collagen. Both the RF and CF groups had high ability to form fibrils in vitro. Under the same conditions, the CF group exhibited faster fibril formation and a thicker fibril diameter (p < 0.05). In addition, the RF group exhibited significantly higher expression of col1a1 compared to the CF group. These results indicated that feeding southern catfish raw food contributed to collagen production, and the collagen from these fish may have potential in biomaterial applications.

Abstract
Marine collagen sources are potent alternatives due to abundant yield, low pathogen infection risk, high biocompatibility, and any religious and ethical restrictions compared to terrestrial collagen sources. In this research, we aim to investigate the biomaterials potential of the collagen from Aurelia aurita, which is a native jellyfish species in the Marmara Sea. Spectroscopic techniques were used to investigate the structure of jellyfish collagen (JCol) from acid-soluble fraction and compared to Jellagen® from Rhizostoma pulmo. MALDI-TOF showed the main peak of Jellagen® at 276,765.161 Da and jellyfish collagen at 276,761.687 Da. SDS-PAGE indicated α1 and α2 bands at about 122 kDa and 140 kDa, respectively. In FTIR and Raman spectra, the locations of amide bands of both species were almost the same. The pI of JCol was determined as 4.46. The particle size decreased abruptly at 43 oC from 890 to 290 nm. Water, organic and inorganic ratios of collagen were determined at 7.14%, 63.59, and 29.27 respectively. In DSC, the denaturation temperature (Td) of JCol was found at 43.7 oC and found to be higher than that of the collagens from jellyfishes that have been reported so far in the literature. Biocompatibility testing by metabolic assay revealed significantly higher fibroblast proliferation on collagen film than on the Tissue Culture Plate. To conclude, Aurelia aurita collagen would be a suitable source of collagen when biomaterials are needed to have high biocompatibility and unique macromolecular properties such as high denaturation temperatures.

Abstract
Collagens are conventionally derived from bovine and porcine sources. However, these sources were commonly associated with infectious diseases such as bovine spongiform encephalopathy, foot and mouth disease, autoimmune and allergic reactions, and religious constraints. The significant amount of collagen available in marine species, especially fish skins, scales, fins, and bones, shows that marine species can be a potential alternative source to mammalian collagen. Therefore, this review aims to give a clearer outlook on the processing techniques of marine collagen and its physicochemical and bioactive properties as a potential alternative to mammalian collagen. The two most suitable extraction methods for marine collagen are pepsin-soluble extraction and ultrasound-assisted extraction. Additionally, marine collagen's physicochemical and bioactive properties, such as antioxidants, wound healing, tissue engineering, and cosmetic biomaterial have been thoroughly discussed in this review. PRACTICAL APPLICATION: Collagen extracted from marine sources showed its potential in physicochemical and bioactive properties, including antioxidants and wound-healing capabilities, as an alternative to mammalian collagen. The significant amount of collagen found in marine species, particularly in fish skins, scales, bones, and sea cucumbers, suggests that marine sources could be a viable alternative to land mammal collagen due to their abundance and accessibility. The ultrasound-assisted extraction technique has improved the extracted marine collagen's physicochemical and bioactivity properties and quality properties.

Abstract
Collagen peptides and marine collagen are enormous resources currently utilized. This review aims to examine the scientific literature to determine which collagen peptides derived from marine sources and which natural active antioxidants from marine collagen have significant biological effects as health-promoting nutraceuticals. Marine collagen is extracted from both vertebrate and invertebrate marine creatures. For vertebrates, this includes fish skin, bones, scales, fins, and cartilage. For invertebrates, it includes mollusks, echinoderms, crustaceans, and poriferans. The method used involved data analysis to organize information for isolating and identifying marine biocompounds with antioxidant properties. Specifically, amino acids with antioxidant properties were identified, enabling the use of hydrolysates and collagen peptides as natural antioxidant nutraceuticals. The methods of extraction of hydrolyzed collagen and collagen peptides by different treatments are systematized. The structural characteristics of collagen, collagen peptides, and amino acids in fish skin and by-products, as well as in invertebrate organisms (jellyfish, mollusks, and crustaceans), are described. The antioxidant properties of different methods of collagen hydrolysates and collagen peptides are systematized, and the results are comparatively analyzed. Their use as natural antioxidant nutraceuticals expands the range of possibilities for the exploitation of natural resources that have not been widely used until now.

Abstract
This study investigated the antioxidant, antimicrobial, and anti-atopic dermatitis (AD) effects of a novel peptide (CP) derived from a Chromis notata by-product hydrolysate. Alcalase, Flavourzyme, Neutrase, and Protamex enzymes were used to hydrolyze the C. notata by-product protein, and the 2,2'-azino-bis(3-ethylbenzothiazoline-6-sulfonic acid) (ABTS) radical-scavenging activity was measured. Alcalase hydrolysate exhibited the highest ABTS radical-scavenging activity, leading to the selection of Alcalase for further purification. The CHAO-1-I fraction, with the highest ABTS activity, was isolated and further purified, resulting in the identification of the peptide CP with the amino acid sequence Ala-Gln-Val-Met-Lys-Leu-Pro-His-Arg-Met-Gln-His-Ser-Gln-Ser. CP demonstrated antimicrobial activity against Staphylococcus aureus, inhibiting its growth. In a 2,4-dinitrochlorobenzene (DNCB)-induced AD-like skin model in mice, CP significantly alleviated skin lesions, reduced epidermal and dermal thickness, and inhibited mast cell infiltration. Moreover, CP suppressed the elevated levels of interleukin-6 (IL-6) in the plasma of DNCB-induced mice. These findings highlight the potential of CP as a therapeutic agent for AD and suggest a novel application of this C. notata by-product in the fish processing industry.

Abstract
Type II collagen is a homologous super-helical structure consisting of three identical α1(II) chains. It is a major component of animal cartilage, and is widely used in the food industry. Type II collagen can be extracted by acids, salts, enzymes, and via auxiliary methods and can be further hydrolyzed chemically and enzymatically to produce collagen peptides. Recent studies have shown that type II collagen and its polypeptides have good self-assembly properties and important biological activities, such as maintaining cartilage tissue integrity, inducing immune tolerance, stimulating chondrocyte growth and redifferentiation, and providing antioxidant benefits. This review focuses specifically on type II collagen and describes its structure, extraction, and purification, as well as the preparation of type II collagen peptides. In particular, the self-assembly properties and functional activities of type II collagen and collagen peptides are reviewed. In addition, recent research advances in the application of type II collagen and collagen peptides in functional foods, food additives, food coating materials, edible films, and carriers for the food industry are presented. This paper provides more detailed and comprehensive information on type II collagen and peptide for their application.

Abstract
The aim of this study was to investigate batch-to-batch inconsistencies in the processing of pig and fish collagen isolates processed using two protocols that differed in terms of the acetic acid concentrations applied and the pre- and post-extraction steps, and which were previously tested in our laboratory with the intention of preserving the biological structures and functions of the collagen isolates for biomedical purposes. Both the major and minor components such as the amino acids, lipids, water, glycosaminoglycan and ash contents and elemental content, as well as the structure and morphology of the raw sources and the resulting batches of isolates were subsequently examined in detail applying standardized analytical methods including high perfomance liquid chromatography, ultraviolet-visible and infrared spectrometry, polyacrylamide gel electrophoresis, energy dispersive spectroscopy and scanning electron microscopy. All the fish isolates provided severalfold higher yields (8-45 wt%) than did the pig isolates (3-9 wt%). In addition, the variability of the fish isolate yields (the coefficient of variation for processing A: 16.4-32.9 % and B: 6.8-17.4 %) was significantly lower (p ≤ 0.05, n = 5) than that of the pig isolates (A: 27.7-69.8 %; B: 35.3-87.9 %). In general, the fish skin batches had significantly higher protein contents (˃60 wt%) and lower lipid contents (<10 wt%) than the pig skin batches (<55 wt% protein and up to 66 wt% lipid). In addition, the fish skin batches did not differ significantly in terms of their composition applying the same processing method, whereas the pig skin batches exhibited considerable variations in terms of their compositions, particularly regarding the protein and lipid contents. It can be stated that, concerning the fish isolates, processing B was, in most cases, slightly more efficient and reproducible than processing A. However, concerning the pig isolates, although processing A appeared to be more efficient than processing B in terms of the yield, it resulted in the production of isolates that contained a certain level of contaminants. The study provides a comprehensive discussion on the suitability of the processing protocol in terms of producing batches of reproducible quality according to the specific type of biomaterial processed from different animal species.

Abstract
Broiler chicken tracheas are a co-product from chicken slaughterhouses which are normally turned into low value animal feed despite their high levels of collagen. Typical collagen extraction by acid and/or pepsin usually results in relatively low yield. Ultrasound-assisted extraction (UAE) could be a means to improve collagen yield. The objectives of this study were to investigate the effects of ultrasonic parameters on the yield and biochemical properties of trachea collagen (TC). Conventional extraction using acetic acid and pepsin for 48 h resulted in acid-soluble (AS) and pepsin-soluble (PS) collagen with a yield of 0.65% and 3.10%, respectively. When an ultrasound with an intensity of 17.46 W·cm-2 was applied for 20 min, followed by acid extraction for 42 h (U-AS), the collagen yield increased to 1.58%. A yield of 6.28% was obtained when the ultrasound treatment was followed by pepsin for 36 h (U-PS). PS and U-PS contained collagen of 82.84% and 85.70%, respectively. Scanning electron microscopy images revealed that the ultrasound did not affect the collagen microstructure. All collagen samples showed an obvious triple helix structure as measured by circular dichroism spectroscopy. Fourier transform infrared spectroscopy indicated that the ultrasound did not disturb the secondary structure of the protein in which approximately 30% of the α-helix content was a major structure for all collagen samples. Micro-differential scanning calorimetry demonstrated that the denaturation temperature of collagen in the presence of deionized water was higher than collagen solubilized in 0.5 M acetic acid, regardless of the extraction method. All collagen comprised of α1 and α2-units with molecular weights of approximately 135 and 116 kDa, respectively, corresponding to the type I characteristic. PS and U-PS collagen possessed higher imino acids than their AS and U-AS counterparts. Based on LC-MS/MS peptide mapping, PS and U-PS collagen showed a high similarity to type I collagen. These results suggest that chicken tracheas are an alternative source of type I collagen. UAE is a promising technique that could increase collagen yield without damaging its structure.

Abstract
There is a growing demand for the identification of alternative sources of collagen not derived from land-dwelling animals. The present study explored the use of pepsin- and acid-based extraction protocols to isolate collagen from the swim bladders of Megalonibea fusca. After extraction, these acid-soluble collagen (ASC) and pepsin-soluble collagen (PSC) samples respectively were subjected to spectral analyses and sodium dodecyl sulphate-polyacrylamide gel electrophoresis (SDS-PAGE) characterization, revealing both to be comprised of type I collagen with a triple-helical structure. The imino acid content of these ASC and PSC samples was 195 and 199 residues per 1000 residues, respectively. Scanning electron microscopy demonstrated that samples of freeze-dried collagen exhibited a compact lamellar structure, while transmission electron microscopy and atomic force microscopy confirmed the ability of these collagens to undergo self-assembly into fibers. ASC samples exhibited a larger fiber diameter than the PSC samples. The solubility of both ASC and PSC was highest under acidic pH conditions. Neither ASC nor PSC caused any cytotoxicity when tested in vitro, which met one of the requirements for the biological evaluation of medical devices. Thus, collagen isolated from the swim bladders of Megalonibea fusca holds great promise as a potential alternative to mammalian collagen.

Abstract
The cellular microenvironment has a profound impact on cell proliferation, interaction, and differentiation. In cell encapsulation for disease therapy, type I collagen is an important biomaterial due to its ability to mimic the extracellular matrix. Telopeptides (carboxy-terminal, CTX, and amino-terminal, NTX) protruding from the triple helix structure of type I collagen are cross-link sites, but also mediate the signal transmission in tissue homeostasis. It is worth investigating the features of the hydrogel microenvironment shaped by the tissue-derived type I collagen with various telopeptide levels, which is paramount for encapsulated cell development. Here, we found the fate of encapsulated human adipose-derived stem cells (hADSCs) and human umbilical vein endothelial cells (HUVECs) behaved differently towards decreasing CTX levels in the collagen hydrogels. Even among collagen hydrogels with a small magnitude of CTX variation, similar stiffness and microstructure, the apparent CTX modulation on the proliferation, cell-interaction, and genes expression of encapsulated hADSCs, as well as morphology and tubule structure formation of endothelial cells were observed, suggesting the biological roles of CTX and its modulation on microenvironment for cell development.

Abstract
Collagen has been considered a key treatment option in preventing damage to the articular cartilage over time and supporting the healing process, following the onset of osteoarthritis (OA). This study aimed to investigate the effect of collagen fermented from jellyfish (FJC) by Bacillus subtilis natto on anterior cruciate ligament transection with medial meniscectomy (ACLT + MMx)-induced knee OA in high-fat diet (HFD)-induced obesity in rats. The male Sprague-Dawley rats were fed an HFD for 6 weeks before ACLT + MMx surgery, after which they were administered a daily oral gavage of saline (control, OA, and OBOA), either with FJC (20 mg/kg, 40 mg/kg, and 100 mg/kg body weight) or glucosamine sulfate as a positive control (GS; 200 mg/kg body weight) for 6 weeks. Treatment with FJC decreased the fat weight, triglyceride, and total cholesterol levels in obese rats. Additionally, FJC downregulated the expression of some proinflammatory cytokines, including tumor necrosis factor-α, cyclooxygenase-2, and nitric oxide; suppressed leptin and adiponectin expression; and attenuated cartilage degradation. It also decreased the activities of matrix metalloproteinase (MMP)-1 and MMP-3. These results demonstrated that FJC showed a protective effect on articular cartilage and also suppressed the degradation of cartilage in an animal OA model, suggesting its potential efficacy as a promising candidate for OA treatment.

Abstract
Marine environments cover more than 70% of the Earth's surface and are among the richest and most complex ecosystems. In terms of biodiversity, the ocean represents an important source, still not widely exploited, of bioactive products derived from species of bacteria, plants, and animals. However, global warming, in combination with multiple anthropogenic practices, represents a serious environmental problem that has led to an increase in gelatinous zooplankton, a phenomenon referred to as jellyfish bloom. In recent years, the idea of "sustainable development" has emerged as one of the essential elements of green-economy initiatives; therefore, the marine environment has been re-evaluated and considered an important biological resource. Several bioactive compounds of marine origin are being studied, and among these, marine collagen represents one of the most attractive bio-resources, given its use in various disciplines, such as clinical applications, cosmetics, the food sector, and many other industrial applications. This review aims to provide a current overview of marine collagen applications in the pharmacological and biomedical fields, regenerative medicine, and cell therapy.

Abstract
The use of by-products of salted jellyfish for gelatin production offers valuable gelatin products rather than animal feed. Several washes or washing machines have reported removing salt in salted jellyfish. However, the green ultrasound technique has never been reported for the desalination of salted jellyfish. The objectives were to determine how effectively the raw material's salt removal was done by combining the traditional wash and then subjected to the ultrasonic waves in a sonication bath for 20-100 min. For gelatin production, the ultrasonicated jellyfish by-products were pretreated with sodium hydroxide and hydrochloric acid, washed, and extracted with hot water for 4, 6, and 8 h. Results showed that the increased duration of ultrasound time increased the desalination rate. The highest desalination rate of 100% was achieved using 100 min ultrasonic time operated at a fixed frequency (40 kHz) and power (220 W). The jellyfish gelatin extracted for 4, 6, and 8 h showed gel strengths in 121-447, 120-278, and 91-248 g. The 80 min ultrasonicated sample and hot water extraction for 8 h (JFG80-8) showed the highest gel yield of 32.69%, with a gel strength of 114.92 g. Still, the 40 min ultrasonicated sample with 4 h of extraction delivered the highest gel strength of 447.01 g (JFG40-4) and the lower yield of 10.60%. The melting and gelling temperatures of jellyfish gelatin from ultrasonicated samples ranged from 15-25°C and 5-12°C, which are lower than bovine gelatin (BG) and fish gelatin (FG). Monitored by FITR, the synergistic effect of extended sonication time (from 20-100 min) with 4 h extraction time at 80 °C caused amide I, II, and III changes. Based on the proteomic results, the peptide similarity of JFG40-4, having the highest gel strength, was 17, 23, or 20 peptides compared to either BG, FG, or JFG100-8 having the lowest gel strength. The 14 peptides were similarly found in all JFG40-4, BG, and FG samples. In conclusion, for the first time in this report, the improved jellyfish gel can be achieved when combined with traditional wash and 40 min ultrasonication of desalted jellyfish and extraction time of 4 h at 80 °C.

Abstract
Simple Summary Collagen is useful in many applications including cosmetics, medicine, yarn production and packaging. Collagen can be recovered from skins of animals raised for meat. Here, we review methods for the extraction and purification of collagen from animal skins. Abstract Collagen is the most abundant structural protein in animals. It is the major component of skin. It finds uses in cosmetics, medicine, yarn production and packaging. This paper reviews the extraction of collagen from hides of most consumed animals for meat with the focus on literature published since 2000. The different pretreatment and extraction techniques that have been investigated for producing collagen from animal skins are reviewed. Pretreatment by enzymatic, acid or alkaline methods have been used. Extraction by chemical hydrolysis, salt solubilization, enzymatic hydrolysis, ultrasound assisted extraction and other methods are described. Post-extraction purification methods are also explained. This compilation will be useful for anyone wishing to use collagen as a resource and wanting to further improve the extraction and purification methods.

Abstract
Oceans have vast potential to develop high-value bioactive substances and biomaterials. In the past decades, many biomaterials have come from marine organisms, but due to the wide variety of organisms living in the oceans, the great diversity of marine-derived materials remains explored. The marine biomaterials that have been found and studied have excellent biological activity, unique chemical structure, good biocompatibility, low toxicity, and suitable degradation, and can be used as attractive tissue material engineering and regenerative medicine applications. In this review, we give an overview of the extraction and processing methods and chemical and biological characteristics of common marine polysaccharides and proteins. This review also briefly explains their important applications in anticancer, antiviral, drug delivery, tissue engineering, and other fields.

Abstract
There is growing interest in human adipose tissue-derived collagen as a replacement for animal origin or synthetic materials. Large amounts of adipose tissues around the kidney are being discarded after kidney surgery; thus, we planned to use this tissue as a potentially ideal source of human collagen. Optimization of the collagen extraction process can contribute to the quality, quantity, supply, and cost of collagen production. To extract highly purified and concentrated collagen from human perirenal adipose tissue, we developed a novel extraction process that is superior to the conventional methods in terms of extraction yield, in vitro cytocompatibility, and physicochemical aspects. The sequence of the process and optimized conditions are as follows: (1) destaining with 0.5% H2O2 for 1 h at 4°C, (2) noncollagenous proteins elimination with 1.5 M NaOH for 24 h at 4°C, (3) atelocollagen preparation with 1.0% pepsin for 48 h at 25°C, and (4) collagen hydrolysis with 1.0 M NaOH for 10 min at 60°C. The final product showed significantly increased hydroxyproline (
pg/mL) and glycine (22.752 μg/mL) content than the conventional acetic acid hydrolyzed collagen (
pg/mL and 0.947 μg/mL, respectively). The lyophilized collagen showed more specific peaks for amides A, B, I, II, and III on FT-IR analysis and showed a further native architecture of collagen fibrils in scanning electron microscope images. Therefore, the optimized process can be an effective protocol for extracting collagen from human perirenal adipose tissue.

Abstract
Utilizing bioactive molecules from organic sources in combination with inorganic materials for enhanced tissue regeneration has been a focus of recent scientific advancements. Some recent studies showed the potential of some specialized bioactive glass for healing of soft tissues; the role of Rohu (Labeo rohita) skin-derived collagen, a biopolymer in tissue regeneration and cutaneous healing, is yet to be established. So, we have fabricated four different types of electrospun mats as wound dressing materials/dermal grafts by combining locally sourced fish (Rohu) skin-derived collagen with novel composition of bioactive glass (Fcol/BAG) without and with dopants (3% and 5% Cu and Co, respectively and their binary) aimed at achieving an accelerated wound healing. FTIR and EDX mapping indicated successful integration of collagen and ion-doped bioactive glass in electrospun mats. Microfibers' architectural features and composition provided a cytocompatible and nontoxic environment conducive to adhesion, spreading, and proliferation of human dermal fibroblasts in vitro; in addition, they were hemocompatible with rabbit red blood cells. Better cutaneous wound healing in rabbits was achieved by treating with Fcol/CoBAG and Fcol/CuCoBAG microfibers with respect to improved wound closure, well-formed continuous epidermis, higher wound maturity, and regulated deposition of extracellular matrix components; mature collagen and elastin. Notably, a significantly (p < 0.01) higher density of blood vessels/positive CD 31 staining was observed in fish collagen/ion-doped bioactive glass microfibrous mat treated wounds suggesting efficient neo-vascularization during early stages of the healing process particularly attributable to copper and cobalt ions in the doped bioactive glass. Enhanced vascularizing ability of these engineered dermal composite grafts/wound dressings along with efficient remodeling of cutaneous structural components (ECM) could collectively be ascribed to bioactive properties of bioactive glass and stimulatory roles of copper, cobalt ions, and fish collagen. Our study demonstrates that a fish collagen/Cu and Co-doped bioactive glass microfibrous mat could potentially be used as a low-cost dressing material/dermal graft for augmented cutaneous wound healing.

Abstract
Recent developments in the biomedical arena have led to the fabrication of innovative biomaterials by utilizing bioactive molecules obtained from biological wastes released from fruit and beverage processing industries, and fish, meat, and poultry industries. These biological wastes that end up in water bodies as well as in landfills are an affluent source of animal- and plant-derived proteins, bio ceramics and polysaccharides such as collagens, gelatins, chitins, chitosans, eggshell membrane proteins, hydroxyapatites, celluloses, and pectins. These bioactive molecules have been intricately designed into scaffolds and dressing materials by utilizing advanced technologies for drug delivery, tissue engineering, and wound healing relevance. These biomaterials are environment-friendly, biodegradable, and biocompatible, and show excellent tissue regeneration attributes. Additionally, being cost-effective they can reduce the burden on the healthcare system as well as provide a sustainable solution to waste management. In this review, the current trends in the utilization of plant and animal waste-derived biomaterials in various biomedical fields are considered along with a separate section on their applications as xenografts.

Abstract
Recently, proteins are gaining attention as potential materials for antibacterial therapy. Proteins possess beneficial properties such as biocompatibility, biodegradability, low immunogenic response, ability to control drug release, and can act as protein-mimics in wound healing. Different plant- and animal-derived proteins can be developed into formulations (films, hydrogels, scaffolds, mats) for topical antibacterial therapy. The application areas for topical antibacterial therapy can be wide including bacterial infections in the skin (e.g., acne, wounds), eyelids, mouth, lips, etc. One of the major challenges of the healthcare system is chronic wound infections. Conventional treatment strategies for topical antibacterial therapy of infected wounds are inadequate, and the development of newer and optimized formulations is warranted. Therefore, this review focuses on recent advances in protein-based systems for topical antibacterial therapy in infected wounds. The opportunities and challenges of such protein-based systems along with their future prospects are discussed.

Abstract
Collagen and its derivative proteins have been widely used as a major component for cosmetic formulations as a natural ingredient and moisturizer. Most commercially available collagens are animal-derived collagen type I and other forms of collagen, such as type III collagen, are far less prevalent in animals, making extraction and purification extremely difficult and expensive. Here, we report the production of a 50 kDa protein produced in yeast that is 100% identical to the N-terminus of the human type III collagen. This recombinant protein has a larger molecular weight than most incumbent recombinant collagen proteins available for personal care applications. We report the industrialization of both the fermentation and purification processes to produce a final recombinant protein product. This final protein product was shown to be safe for general applications to human skin and compatible with common formulation protocols, including ethanol-based formulations. This recombinant collagen type III protein was also shown to uniquely stimulate both collagen type I and type III production and secretion by primary human dermal fibroblasts. The unique combination of biostimulation, compatibility with beauty product formulations and demonstrated commercial production, make this novel recombinant type III collagen a good candidate for broad application in the cosmetics industry.

Abstract
Collagen is the primary component of the extracellular matrix in humans. Traditionally commercial collagen is confined to bovine and porcine sources which have concerns of pathogenic transfer. Marine wastage accounts up to 85% by weight in the fishing industry. Extraction of collagen from these wastes for economic value and environmental sustainability is clear. Marine collagens have several advantages such as excellent biocompatibility, lower zoonotic risks, less immunological risk for patients allergic to mammalian products, and less religious restrictions. However, the properties of marine collagen-based constructs are highly dependent on the methods of fabrication. This article reviews advances in the design and fabrication of marine collagen-based constructs for medical applications. The potential applications of marine collagen in the regeneration of skin, bone and cartilage were also highlighted.

Abstract
The objective of this study was to investigate the possibility of using jellyfish (Lobonema smithii) for the production of nutritionally improved crackers. In this study, ground jellyfish were incorporated into different levels (20, 30, and 40%) to replace wheat flour in cracker formula. Physicochemical characteristics (linear expansion, hardness, and color) and sensory quality of the developed crackers were examined and compared with control crackers. The crackers with jellyfish were found significantly darker, with more brittleness, and less consumer accepted than the control samples (p < 0.05). Moisture content, a w, and thiobarbituric acid reactive substances (TBARS)-values of jellyfish crackers increased while the hardness of the jellyfish crackers decreased with increasing the storage time for both crackers stored at 35 and 45°C. The substitution of wheat flour with jellyfish led to high protein content in the crackers. The cracker with 30% of jellyfish gained characteristics of cracker, liking scores, as well as the subjective quality of the final product and had good physical and chemical conditions, being able to be consumed for 12 weeks stored at 35°C.

Abstract
Collagen is a kind of biocompatible protein material, which is widely used in medical tissue engineering, drug delivery, cosmetics, food and other fields. Because of its wide source, low extraction cost and good physical and chemical properties, it has attracted the attention of many researchers in recent years. However, the application of collagen derived from terrestrial organisms is limited due to the existence of diseases, religious beliefs and other problems. Therefore, exploring a wider range of sources of collagen has become one of the main topics for researchers. Marine-derived collagen (MDC) stands out because it comes from a variety of sources and avoids issues such as religion. On the one hand, this paper summarized the sources, extraction methods and characteristics of MDC, and on the other hand, it summarized the application of MDC in the above fields. And on the basis of the review, we found that MDC can not only be extracted from marine organisms, but also from the wastes of some marine organisms, such as fish scales. This makes further use of seafood resources and increases the application prospect of MDC.

Abstract
The edible jellyfish Acromitus hardenbergi Stiasny, 1934 is harvested throughout the year at the mouth of the Perak River, Malaysia. Although this species is an important fishery resource in the local area, limited biological studies have been carried out on it. The aim of the present study was to elucidate the life cycle of this unique brackish-water jellyfish in order to conserve the species and develop sustainable jellyfish fisheries. Mature medusae were collected at the mouth of the Perak River. Embryonic and larval development after fertilization was completed within 24 h until the planula stage and within 48 h until the polyp stage. Primary polyps had a long stalk with a small stolon at the base of the calyx. Fully developed polyps were bowl-or goblet-shaped but became an elongated stalk under starved conditions. Asexual reproduction was accomplished only by means of budding, and no podocysts were produced. Strobilation was mono-disc type. These characteristics may be adaptations to the dynamic environmental conditions in the estuary of the Perak River, where salinity fluctuates widely due to strong inflows of highly turbid freshwater coupled with tidal changes. This study suggests that polyps of A. hardenbergi expand their population not by podocysts, but by budding as quickly as possible and forming one large ephyra by mono-disc strobilation without the residuum, because the polyp cannot remain for a long time at its settlement place in the sediment-rich environment with drastic salinity change.

Abstract
Collagen (Col) from marine organisms has been emerging as an important alternative for commercial Col and it has been considered highly attractive by the industry. Despite the positive effects of Col from marine origin, there is still limited understanding of the effects of this natural biomaterial in the process of wound healing in animal studies. In this context, the purpose of this study was to perform a systematic review of the literature to examine the effects of Col from different marine species in the process of skin tissue healing using experimental models of skin wound. The search was carried out according to the orientations of Preferred Reporting Items for Systematic Reviews and Meta-Analysis (PRISMA), and the descriptors of the Medical Subject Headings (MeSH) were defined: "marine collagen," "spongin," "spongin," "skin," and "wound." A total of 42 articles were retrieved from the databases PubMed and Scopus. After the eligibility analyses, this review covers the different marine sources of Col reported in 10 different papers from the beginning of 2011 through the middle of 2019. The results were based mainly on histological analysis and it demonstrated that Col-based treatment resulted in a higher deposition of granulation tissue, stimulation of re-epitalization and neoangiogenesis and increased amount of Col of the wound, culminating in a more mature morphological aspect. In conclusion, this review demonstrates that marine Col from different species presented positive effects on the process of wound skin healing in experimental models used, demonstrating the huge potential of this biomaterial for tissue engineering proposals.

Abstract
Research background Animal collagen has been widely utilized in foods, cosmetics and biomedical fields. The non-edible portion, such as fish skin and bones, are obtained during cooking. Most of them are currently discarded as wastes, although the nutritional value of the skin and bones is high. The non-edible portion needs to be reused in order to reduce environmental impact, as it is one of the sources of environmental pollution. Experimental approach Collagen was prepared by cold acetone treatment from Sakhalin taimen skin as a waste produced during cooking. Next, the colour, SDS-polyacrylamide gel electrophoresis, ultraviolet absorption, subunit composition, amino acid composition, denaturation temperature and attenuated total reflectance-Fourier transform infrared spectroscopy analyses were conducted to explore the properties of the collagen. Lastly, we attempted to improve the functional properties of the collagen for future applications using chemical modification technique (succinylation). Results and conclusions Cold acetone treatment easily removed the fats and pigments from the skin. The odourless and pure white collagen was obtained with high yield. The α3 chain did not exist in the collagen. Sakhalin taimen skin collagen had rich α-helix and low β-sheet structures. Succinylation caused the secondary structural changes of the collagen molecule. Moreover, it made it possible not only to increase the viscosity of the collagen solution but also to improve the solubility of the collagen under the physiological conditions around pH=6. Novelty and scientific contribution This finding is the first report on the absence of the α3 chain from salmonid fish skin collagens. The succinylated collagen from Sakhalin taimen skins as useful biomass has potential to utilize in foods, cosmetics and related industries.

Abstract
The utilization of marine-based collagen is growing fast due to its unique properties in comparison with mammalian-based collagen such as no risk of transmitting diseases, a lack of religious constraints, a cost-effective process, low molecular weight, biocompatibility, and its easy absorption by the human body. This article presents an overview of the recent studies from 2014 to 2020 conducted on collagen extraction from marine-based materials, in particular fish by-products. The fish collagen structure, extraction methods, characterization, and biomedical applications are presented. More specifically, acetic acid and deep eutectic solvent (DES) extraction methods for marine collagen isolation are described and compared. In addition, the effect of the extraction parameters (temperature, acid concentration, extraction time, solid-to-liquid ratio) on the yield of collagen is investigated. Moreover, biomaterials engineering and therapeutic applications of marine collagen have been summarized.

Abstract
Collagen is the major fibrillar protein in most living organisms. Among the different types of collagen, type I collagen is the most abundant one in tissues of marine invertebrates. Due to the health-related risk factors and religious constraints, use of mammalian derived collagen has been limited. This triggers the search for alternative sources of collagen for both food and non-food applications. In this regard, numerous studies have been conducted on maximizing the utilization of seafood processing by-products and address the need for collagen. However, less attention has been given to marine invertebrates and their by-products. The present review has focused on identifying sea cucumber as a potential source of collagen and discusses the general scope of collagen extraction, isolation, characterization, and physicochemical properties along with opportunities and challenges for utilizing marine-derived collagen.

Abstract
Due to its unique properties, collagen is used in the growing fields of pharmaceutical and biomedical devices, as well as in the fields of nutraceuticals, cosmeceuticals, food and beverages. Collagen also represents a valid resource for bioplastics and biomaterials, to be used in the emerging health sectors. Recently, marine organisms have been considered as promising sources of collagen, because they do not harbor transmissible disease. In particular, fish biomass as well as by-catch organisms, such as undersized fish, jellyfish, sharks, starfish, and sponges, possess a very high collagen content. The use of discarded and underused biomass could contribute to the development of a sustainable process for collagen extraction, with a significantly reduced environmental impact. This addresses the European zero-waste strategy, which supports all three generally accepted goals of sustainability: sustainable economic well-being, environmental protection, and social well-being. A zero-waste strategy would use far fewer new raw materials and send no waste materials to landfills. In this review, we present an overview of the studies carried out on collagen obtained from by-catch organisms and fish wastes. Additionally, we discuss novel technologies based on thermoplastic processes that could be applied, likewise, as marine collagen treatment.

Abstract
Disruption of the continuous cutaneous membrane in the integumentary system is considered a health problem of high cost for any nation. Several attempts have been made for developing skin substitutes in order to restore injured tissue including autologous implants and the use of scaffolds based on synthetic and natural materials. Current biomaterials used for skin tissue repair include several scaffold matrices types, synthetic or natural, absorbable, degradable or non-degradable polymers, porous or dense scaffolds, and cells capsulated in hydrogels or spheroids systems so forth. These materials have advantages and disadvantages and its use will depend on the desired application. Recently, marine organisms such as jellyfish have attracted renewed interest, because both its composition and structure resemble the architecture of human dermic tissue. In this context, the present study aims to generate scaffolds from Cassiopea andromeda (C. andromeda), with application in skin tissue engineering, using a decellularization process. The obtained scaffold was studied by infrared spectroscopy (FT-IR), thermogravimetric analysis (TGA), differential scanning calorimetry analysis (DSC), and scanning electron microscopy (SEM). Crystal violet staining and DNA quantification assessed decellularization effectiveness while the biocompatibility of scaffold was determined with human dermic fibroblasts. Results indicated that the decellularization process reduce native cell population leading to 70% reduction in DNA content. In addition, SEM showed that the macro and microstructure of the collagen I-based scaffold were preserved allowing good adhesion and proliferation of human dermic fibroblasts. The C. andromeda scaffold mimics human skin and therefore represents great potential for skin tissue engineering.

Abstract
Marine collagen peptides (MCPs) with the ability to promote cell proliferation and migration were obtained from the skin of Nibea japonica. The purpose of MCPs isolation was an attempt to convert the by-products of the marine product processing industry to high value-added items. MCPs were observed to contain many polypeptides with molecular weights ≤ 10 kDa and most amino acid residues were hydrophilic. MCPs (0.25–10 mg/mL) also exhibited 2, 2-diphenyl-1-picrylhydrazyl (DPPH), hydroxyl, superoxide anion, and 2′-azino-bis-3-ethylbenzothiazoline-6-sulfonic acid (ABTS) radical scavenging activities. Furthermore, MCPs promoted the proliferation of NIH-3T3 cells. In vitro scratch assays indicated that MCPs significantly enhanced the scratch closure rate and promoted the migration of NIH-3T3 cells. To further determine the signaling mechanism of MCPs, western blotting was used to study the expression levels of nuclear factor kappa-B (NF-κB) p65, IκB kinase α (IKKα), and IκB kinase β (IKKβ) proteins of the NF-κB signaling pathway. Our results indicated protein levels of NF-κB p65, IKKα and IKKβ increased in MCPs-treated NIH-3T3 cells. In addition, MCPs increased the expression of epidermal growth factor (EGF), fibroblast growth factor (FGF), vascular endothelial growth factor (VEGF), and transforming growth factor (TGF-β) in NIH-3T3 cells. Therefore, MCPs, a by-product of N. japonica, exhibited potential wound healing abilities in vitro.

Abstract
Collagen was extracted from bigeye tuna (Thunnus obesus) skins by salting-out (PSC-SO) and isoelectric precipitation (PSC-IP) methods. The yield of the PSC-IP product was approximately 17.17% (dry weight), which was greater than the yield obtained from PSC-SO (14.14% dry weight). Sodium dodecyl sulfate-polyacrylamide gel electrophoresis analysis indicated that collagen from bigeye tuna skin belongs to collagen type I. Inductively coupled plasma mass spectrometry results indicate that the heavy metal abundance in PSC-IP was lower than the maximum acceptable amounts according to Chinese regulatory standards. In addition, results from a methylthiazolyldiphenyl-tetrazolium bromide assay and an in vitro scratch assay demonstrated that PSC-IP could promote the proliferation and migration of NIH-3T3 fibroblasts. Overall, results suggest PSC-IP could be used to rapidly extract collagen from marine by-products instead of traditional salting-out methods. Collagen from bigeye tuna skin may also have strong potential for cosmetic and biomedical applications.

Abstract
Chondroitin sulfate (CS), together with peptide, was isolated from the liquid fraction of chicken sternal cartilage subjected to steam explosion (SE) by membrane separation. Cartilage was liquefied via the SE conditions, including various pressures (1.0-1.6 MPa) and times (60-140 s). The extraction procedure was optimized as follows: the amount of papain added, 0.11%; enzymolysis time, 10.5 h; and enzymolysis temperature, 56.5 °C, under which the highest recovery and total yield of CS were 92.15% and 18.55% at 1.4 MPa for120 s, and the counterparts of peptides were 87.35% (1.0 MPa, 140 s) and 63.07% (1.6 MPa, 140 s). The average molecular weight of CS samples ranged from 30 to 35 kDa. CS sample was confirmed using agarose-gel electrophoresis, and the structure was analysed Fourier transform infrared spectroscopy, chromatography and nuclear magnetic resonance. Taken together, SE can be an eco-friendly pretreatment method to liquefy cartilage for CS isolation.
