Abstract
The purpose of this study was to investigate whether patients with colorectal cancer (CRC) combined with hyperuricemia remitted 1 year after CRC surgery. CRC patients combined with hyperuricemia who underwent radical surgery were included from a single clinical center from Jan 2016 to Dec 2021. Baseline characteristics was compared between the remission group and the non-remission group. Multivariate logistic regression was used to find the possible predictive factors of hyperuricemia remission. A total of 91 patients were included for data analysis, retrospectively. There were 34 (37.4%) patients in the remission group and 57 (62.6%) patients in the non-remission group. The mean preoperative weight and body mass index (BMI) were 61.2 ± 10.7 (kg) and 24.1 ± 3.3 (kg/m2). 21 (23.1%) patients had a history of drinking. We found that the weight and BMI were not significantly different before and 1 year after CRC surgery (P > 0.05). In contrast, uric acid values were significantly decreased (P < 0.01). Meanwhile, the outcomes showed there were no significant differences in the baseline characteristics between the remission and non-remission groups (P > 0.05). According to multivariate logistic regression, we found that the history of drinking was a predictive factor of hyperuricemia remission (OR = 0.046, 95% CI 0.005-0.475, P = 0.010). CRC patients with hyperuricemia had a 37.4% remission from hyperuricemia 1 year after CRC surgery. Tumor location, tumor stage, and tumor size did not predict the remission of hyperuricemia. Notably, the history of drinking was a predictive factor of hyperuricemia remission.

Abstract
Hyperuricemia is influenced by diet and can cause gout. Whether it is a potential risk factor for cardiovascular disease (CVD) remains controversial, and the mechanism is unclear. Similar to CVDs, gout attacks occur more frequently in the morning and at night. A possible reason for this is the diurnal variation in uric acid (UA), However, scientific data regarding this variation in patients with CVD are not available. Thus, we aimed to investigate diurnal variations in serum levels of UA and plasma levels of xanthine, hypoxanthine, and xanthine oxidoreductase (XOR) activity, which were measured at 18:00, 6:00, and 12:00 in male patients with coronary artery disease. Thirty eligible patients participated in the study. UA and xanthine levels significantly increased from 18:00 to 6:00 but significantly decreased from 6:00 to 12:00. By contrast, XOR activity significantly increased both from 18:00 to 6:00 and 6:00 to 12:00. Furthermore, the rates of increase in UA and xanthine levels from night to morning were significantly and positively correlated. In conclusion, UA and xanthine showed similar diurnal variations, whereas XOR activity showed different diurnal variations. The morning UA surge could be due to UA production. The mechanism involved XOR activity, but other factors were also considered.

Abstract
OBJECTIVE This study aimed to estimate the prevalence of hyperuricaemia (HUA) and investigate its risk factors in the general adult population of Ningxia Hui Autonomous Region (NHAR), China. DESIGN Cross-sectional study. SETTING Survey of cardiovascular disorders and their related risk factors in NHAR, China. PARTICIPANTS 10 803 permanent residents aged 18 and older. MAIN OUTCOME MEASURES HUA was defined as serum uric acid levels >420 µmol/L for men and >360 µmol/L for women. RESULTS The overall prevalence of HUA in NHAR adults was 19.81% (95% CI 19.06 to 20.57), with prevalence values of 24.91% (95% CI 23.70 to 26.14) in men and 15.58% (95% CI 14.66 to 16.53, p<0.001) in women. The prevalence of HUA was higher in urban residents than in rural residents (23.26% vs 17.02%, p<0.001). HUA prevalence was relatively high in individuals younger than 30 years for both men and women, then decreased with age, and began to increase at the age of 40 for women and 60 for men. Higher level of education, being overweight or obese, alcohol consumption, hypertension, diabetes, higher triglycerides, higher total cholesterol and poorer renal function were associated with an increased risk of HUA. CONCLUSIONS HUA prevalence is high among adults in NHAR. Young adults under 30 years and women over 50 years were identified as populations at high risk for HUA. Further attention ought to be placed to promoting healthy diets and implementing early interventions to manage dyslipidaemia, obesity and blood glucose level, as well as advocating for moderation of alcohol consumption.

Abstract
BACKGROUND Gout is the most common inflammatory arthritis and closely related to metabolic syndrome, leading to excruciating pain and the decline in quality of patients' life. However, the pathogenesis of gout is still unclear, and novel biomarkers are demanded for the early prediction and diagnosis of gout. OBJECTIVE This study aimed at profiling the dysregulated metabolic pathways in asymptomatic hyperuricemia (AHU) and gout and elucidating the associations between AHU, gout and metabolomics, which may aid in performing gout screening. METHODS A total of 300 participants, including 114 healthy controls, 92 patients with AHU, and 94 patients with gout, were analyzed by using a combination of dried blood spot (DBS) sampling and mass spectrometry (MS) technology. Multiple algorithms were applied to characterize altered metabolic profiles in AHU and gout. The mainly altered metabolites were identified by random forest analysis. RESULTS There were significant differences in AHU and gout compared with control group. The altered metabolites were involved in oxidation of fatty acids, carnitine synthesis, urea cycle, and amino acid metabolism in AHU and gout. Random forest classification of 16 metabolites yielded 3 important features to distinguish gout from AHU. CONCLUSIONS Distinct metabolomic signatures were observed in AHU and gout. The selected metabolites may have the potential to improve the early detection of gout.

Abstract
This article examined the current research on hyperuricemia (HUA) exacerbating diabetic kidney damage and novel anti-diabetic medications for treating these people. Hyperuricemia and type 2 diabetes (T2D), both of which are frequent metabolic disorders, are closely connected. Recent studies have shown that hyperuricemia can increase kidney injury in T2D patients by aggravating insulin resistance, by activating the renin-angiotensin-aldosterone system (RAAS), and by stimulating inflammatory factors, and the diversity, distribution, and metabolites of intestinal flora. Considering this, there are just a few of the research examining the effect of hyperuricemia on diabetic kidney injury via intestinal flora. Through the gut-kidney axis, intestinal flora primarily influences renal function. The primary mechanism is that variations in diversity, distribution, and metabolites of intestinal flora led to alterations in metabolites (such as short-chain fatty acids, Indoxyl sulfate and p-cresol sulfate, Trimethylamine N-oxide TMAO). This article reviewed the research and investigates the association between hyperuricemia and T2D, as well as the influence of hyperuricemia on diabetic kidney injury via intestinal flora. In addition, the current novel antidiabetic drugs are discussed, and their characteristics and mechanisms of action are reviewed. These novel antidiabetic drugs include SGLT2 inhibitors, GLP-1 receptor agonists, DDP-4 inhibitors, glucokinase (GK) enzyme activators (GK agonists), and mineralocorticoid receptor antagonists (MRA). Recent studies suggest that these new anti-diabetic medications may have a therapeutic effect on hyperuricemia-induced kidney impairment in diabetes patients via various mechanisms. Some of these medications may reduce blood uric acid levels, while others may improve kidney function by attenuating the overstimulation of RAAS or by decreasing insulin resistance and inflammation in the kidneys. These novel antidiabetic medicines may have a multifaceted approach to treating hyperuricemia-induced kidney impairment in diabetic patients; nevertheless, additional study is required to establish their efficacy and comprehend their specific mechanisms.

Abstract
BACKGROUND Obesity and type 2 diabetes mellitus (T2DM) are risk factors for hyperuricemia. However, which anthropometric indices can better predict incident hyperuricemia in patients with T2DM remains inconsistent. This study aimed to examine the associations between hyperuricemia and different anthropometric indices in middle-aged and older male patients with T2DM. METHODS In this retrospective study, a total of 1447 middle-aged (45-65 years, n = 791) and older (≥ 65 years, n = 656) male patients with T2DM were collected from December 2015 to January 2020 at Shanghai Xinhua Hospital. Hyperuricemia was defined as a serum uric acid level above 7.0 mg/dL. Weight, height, waist circumference (WC) and hip circumference (HC) were measured by trained nurses at visit. RESULTS The median uric acid level of subjects was 5.6 (interquartile ranges: 4.7-6.7) mg/dl, and 279 (19.3%) were hyperuricemia, with 146 (18.5%) in the middle-aged group, and 133 (20.3%) in the older group. After adjusting for age, duration of T2DM, fasting plasma glucose and insulin, homeostasis model assessment-β, aspartate aminotransferase, triglycerides, high-density lipoprotein cholesterol and estimated glomerular filtration rate, body mass index (BMI), WC, HC, and waist-to-height ratio (WHtR) were associated with a higher risk of hyperuricemia in both middle-aged and older group (P < 0.05). After further adjusting for BMI and WC, HC still showed a positive relationship with the risk of hyperuricemia (Odds Ratio = 1.51, 95% confidence intervals: 1.06-2.14) in the middle-aged group, but such relationship was not found in the older group. Moreover, according to receiver operating characteristic analysis, the optimal cutoff value was 101.3 cm of HC for hyperuricemia screening in the middle-aged male patients with T2DM. CONCLUSION In middle-aged male patients with T2DM, more attention should be paid to HC with the cutoff value of 101.3 cm in clinical practice for early recognition of individuals with a high risk of hyperuricemia for targeted guidance on disease prevention, such as community screening.

Abstract
BACKGROUND AND AIMS Hyperinsulinemia and hyperuricemia are known to increase the risk of mortality due to certain complications, such as Type 2 Diabetes and cardiovascular disease. However, despite their common comorbidities, their combined effect has not been evaluated. The study's aim was to evaluate the combine effect of hyperinsulinemia and hyperuricemia on all-cause mortality. METHODS AND RESULTS NHANES datasets (cycles 2003-2018) were examined. Differences between groups were evaluated using Rao-Scott Chi-square and General Linear Model for categorical and continuous data, respectively. Hazard Ratios (HR) were calculated using Cox regression with 95% confidence intervals (95%CI). There was significant difference (p < 0.05) in the mortality rate between the control group (2.3 ± 0.2%), the hyperinsulinemia only group (3.1 ± 0.3%), the hyperuricemia only group (4.0 ± 0.8%), and both conditions (5.1 ± 0.8%). Individually, when compared to the control group, there was a significant increase in mortality risk for hyperinsulinemia (HR: 1.50, 95%CI: 1.12-2.01, p = 0.007) and hyperuricemia (HR: 1.80, 95%CI:1.18-2.75, p = 0.006). However, when both conditions were present, there appeared an additive effect in the mortality risk (HR: 2.32, 95%CI: 1.66-3.25, p < 0.001). When stratified by BMI class, only normal weight participants presented with a significant risk (HR: 7.00, 95%CI: 2.50-20.30, p < 0.001). Also, when stratified by age, only participants older than 40 years presented a risk (HR: 2.22, 95%CI: 1.56-3.16, p < 0.001). CONCLUSION Alone, hyperuricemia and hyperinsulinemia significantly increased the mortality rate; however, the combined presence of both pathologies was associated with a significantly augmented mortality rate. Normal weight participant or that were >40 years old had a greater risk for mortality.

Abstract
INTRODUCTION Gout is a common autoinflammatory disease caused by hyperuricemia with acute and/or chronic inflammation as well as tissue damage. Currently, urate-lowering therapy (ULT) and anti-inflammatory therapy are used as first-line strategies for gout treatment. However, traditional drugs for gout treatment exhibit some unexpected side effects and are not suitable for certain patients due to their comorbidity with other chronic disease. AREAS COVERED In this review, we described the pathophysiology of hyperuricemia and monosodium urate (MSU) crystal induced inflammatory response during gout development in depth and comprehensively summarized the advances in the investigation of promising ULT drugs as well as anti-inflammatory drugs that might be safer and more effective for gout treatment. EXPERT OPINION New drugs that are developed based on these molecular mechanisms exhibited great efficacy on reduction of disease burden both in vitro and in vivo, implying their potential for clinical application. Moreover, hyperthermia also showed regulation effect on MSU crystals formation and the signaling pathways involved in inflammation.

Abstract
Purpose In this study, the aim was to investigate the prevalence and risk factors of hyperuricemia (HUA) in the urban health checkup population in Urumqi, Xinjiang, and thus provide clues for the prevention of HUA. Methods People who attended medical examinations from May 2021 to June 2022 at a hospital in Urumqi, Xinjiang, were selected for evaluation based on their general information, physical examination results, and laboratory test results. The chi-square test was used to determine whether there was a difference in the prevalence of HUA among participants with different characteristics. Using logistic regression analyses, risk factors for HUA were identified. Results There were 8722 participants diagnosed with HUA, with an overall prevalence of 26.96%. The prevalence in men was 37.72%, significantly higher than in women (13.29%). Participants were characterized by a multiethnic composition, with Han (28.61%), Hui (27.88%) and Manchu (38.46%) being the three ethnicities with the highest prevalence. According to logistic regression analyses, HUA was associated with age, ethnicity, residence, marital status, body mass index (BMI), diastolic blood pressure (DBP), fasting blood glucose (FPG), triglyceride glucose (TyG) index, abdominal obesity, and dyslipidemia differently in males and females. Conclusion The prevalence of HUA was high in the urban health checkup population in Urumqi, Xinjiang, particularly among men and youth. The early intervention for HUA should be enhanced to reduce the risk of cardiovascular disease and other related conditions.

Abstract
The molecular mechanisms underlying uric acid (UA)-induced mitochondrial dysfunction and apoptosis have not yet been elucidated. Herein, we investigated underlying mechanisms of UA in the development of mitochondrial dysfunction and apoptosis. We analyzed blood samples of individuals with normal UA levels and patients with hyperuricemia. Results showed that patients with hyperuricemia had significantly elevated levels of alanine aminotransferase (ALT) and aspartate aminotransferase (AST) levels, which may indicate liver or mitochondrial damage in patients with hyperuricemia. Subsequently, lipidomic analysis of mouse liver tissue mitochondria and human liver L02 cell mitochondria was performed. Compared with control group levels, high UA increased mitochondrial phosphatidylserine (PS) and decreased mitochondrial phosphatidylethanolamine (PE) levels, whereas the expression of mitochondrial phosphatidylserine decarboxylase (PISD) that mediates PS and PE conversion was downregulated. High UA levels also inhibited signal transducer and activator of transcription 3 (STAT3) phosphorylation as well as mitochondrial respiration, while inducing apoptosis both in vivo and in vitro. Treatment with allopurinol, overexpression of PISD, and lyso-PE (LPE) administration significantly attenuated the three above-described effects in vitro. In conclusion, UA may induce mitochondrial dysfunction and apoptosis through mitochondrial PISD downregulation. This study provides a new perspective on liver damage caused by hyperuricemia.

Abstract
It is assumed that the risk of developing type 2 diabetes mellitus (T2DM) in patients with gout is influenced by both generally accepted risk factors and factors related to gout. The aim of the study was to evaluate the impact of various risk factors for T2DM in patients with gout. A total of 444 patients (49 women, 395 men) ≥18 years old with gout and without DM were included. The duration of observation was 5.66 [2.69; 7.64] years. To identify the factors associated with the risk of developing T2DM, multivariate logistic regression was used, which included sex; T2DM in relatives; insufficient physical activity; unbalanced diet; age ≥ 45 years; ≥4 attacks per year; presence of tophi; BMI ≥30 kg/m2; allopurinol, febuxostat, glucocorticoids, diuretics, metformin, colchicine; GFR < 60 mL/min/1.73 m2; serum uric acid level (sUA) ≥ 420 µmol/L and ≥ 480 µmol/L. T2DM developed in 108 (24.3%) patients. According to the multivariate model, the presence of ≥4 attacks of arthritis per year increased the risk of T2DM (OR = 5.23; 95% CI: 2.98-9.19; p = 0.0001); presence of tophi (OR = 2.61; 95% CI: 1.50-4.54; p = 0.001); sUA ≥ 480 µmol/L (OR = 2.26; 95% CI: 1.02-5.00; p = 0.144); diuretics (OR = 2.35; 95% CI: 1.19-4.64; p = 0.014). Febuxostat (OR = 0.31; 95% CI: 0.11-0.84; p = 0.022) and metformin (OR = 0.49; 95% CI: 0.21-1.16; p = 0.107) reduced the risk of developing T2DM. Risk of T2DM in patients with gout is associated with high incidence of arthritis attacks, MK ≥ 480 μmol/L, hypertension, diuretic use, and febuxostat and metformin reduces risk.

Abstract
Dietary interventions modify gut microbiota and clinical outcomes. Weight reduction and improved glucose and lipid homeostasis were observed after adopting an Okinawan-based Nordic diet (O-BN) in individuals with type 2 diabetes. The aim of the present study was to explore changes in metabolomics and gut microbiota during O-BN and correlate changes with clinical outcomes. A total of 30 patients (17 women), aged 57.5 ± 8.2 years, diabetes duration 10.4 ± 7.6 years, 90% over-weight, were included. Participants were provided an O-BN for 12 weeks. Before and after intervention, and 16 weeks afterwards, anthropometry and clinical data were estimated and questionnaires were collected, as well as samples of blood and stool. Plasma metabolomics were determined by gas- (GC-MS) or liquid- (LC-MS) chromatography-based mass spectrometry and fecal microbiota determination was based on 16S rRNA amplicons from regions V1-V2. During the intervention, weight (6.8%), waist circumference (6.1%), and levels of glucose, HbA1c, insulin, triglycerides, and cholesterol were decreased. Of 602 metabolites, 323 were changed for any or both periods; 199 (101 lipids) metabolites were decreased while 58 (43 lipids) metabolites were increased during the intervention. Changes in glucose homeostasis were linked to changes in, e.g., 1,5-anhydroglucitol, thyroxine, and chiro-inositol. Changes of microbe beta diversity correlated positively with food components and negatively with IL-18 (p = 0.045). Abundance differences at phylum and genus levels were found. Abundances of Actinobacteria, Bacteroidetes, Firmicutes, and Verrucomicrobia correlated with anthropometry, HbA1c, lipids, inflammation, and food. Changes in metabolites and microbiota were reversed after the intervention. The O-BN-induced changes in metabolomics and gut microbiota correspond to clinical outcomes of reduced weight and inflammation and improved glucose and lipid metabolism.

Abstract
Xanthine oxidoreductase (XOR) is an enzyme found in various organisms. It converts hypoxanthine to xanthine and urate, which are crucial steps in purine elimination in humans. Elevated uric acid levels can lead to conditions like gout and hyperuricemia. Therefore, there is significant interest in developing drugs that target XOR for treating these conditions and other diseases. Oxipurinol, an analogue of xanthine, is a well-known inhibitor of XOR. Crystallographic studies have revealed that oxipurinol directly binds to the molybdenum cofactor (MoCo) in XOR. However, the precise details of the inhibition mechanism are still unclear, which would be valuable for designing more effective drugs with similar inhibitory functions. In this study, molecular dynamics and quantum mechanics/molecular mechanics calculations are employed to investigate the inhibition mechanism of XOR by oxipurinol. The study examines the structural and dynamic effects of oxipurinol on the pre-catalytic structure of the metabolite-bound system. Our results provide insights on the reaction mechanism catalyzed by the MoCo center in the active site, which aligns well with experimental findings. Furthermore, the results provide insights into the residues surrounding the active site and propose an alternative mechanism for developing alternative covalent inhibitors.

Abstract
Objective To investigate the effect of simple subclinical hypothyroidism (SCH) and type 2 diabetes mellitus (T2DM) combined with SCH on insulin resistance. Design and methods A total of 622 people with newly diagnosed T2DM were selected as the study subjects, and 621 normoglycemic people were selected as control subjects. According to the diagnostic criteria of thyroid diseases, the subjects were divided into a normal thyroid function group and a subclinical hypothyroidism group. Both groups received a physical examination, and blood samples were collected. The measurement indexes included FPG, FINS, OGTT2hPG, OGTT2hINS, HbA1c, TC, TG, HDL-C, LDL-C, TSH, FT3 and FT4. HOMA-IR, HOMA-β, and TFQI (thyroid feedback quantile index) were calculated. Results There was no significant difference in age or sex distribution between the T2DM group and the normoglycemic group (P>0.05). The prevalence of thyroid dysfunction in the T2DM group was significantly higher than that in the normoglycemic group (16.39% vs. 11.27%, P<0.05), and among the different types of thyroid dysfunction, the prevalence of SCH was the highest at 14.95% (P<0.05). There was no significant difference in BMI, waist-hip ratio, blood lipid profile, HOMA-β, and HOMA-IR values between the T2DM with subclinical hypothyroidism group (T2DM+SCH+ group) and the normal thyroid function group (T2DM+SCH- group) (P>0.05). The BMI, waist-hip ratio and HOMA-IR values of the normoglycemic group with subclinical hypothyroidism (T2DM-SCH+ group) were significantly higher than those of the normoglycemic group with normal thyroid function (T2DM-SCH- group) (P<0.05), and there were no significant differences between the T2DM+SCH- and T2DM+SCH+ groups (P>0.05). HOMA-β values were significantly higher in the T2DM-SCH+ group than in the T2DM-SCH-, T2DM+SCH- and T2DM+SCH+ groups (P<0.05). As the TFQI value increased, the body weight, waist-hip ratio, diastolic blood pressure, FPG, OGTT2hPG and HbA1c values gradually increased in the T2DM group and normoglycemic group (P<0.05). HDL-C, FINS, OGTT2hINS and HOMA-β values gradually decreased (P<0.05). Conclusion Subclinical hypothyroidism only increases insulin resistance in normoglycemic people. As the sensitivity of the central thyroid decreases, the risk of developing diabetes increases.

Abstract
Green tea polyphenols have numerous functions including antioxidation and modulation of various cellular proteins and are thus beneficial against metabolic diseases including obesity, type 2 diabetes, cardiovascular and non-alcoholic fatty liver diseases, and their comorbidities. Epigallocatechin-3-gallate (EGCG) is the most abundant polyphenol in green tea and is attributed to antioxidant and free radical scavenging activities, and the likelihood of targeting multiple metabolic pathways. It has been shown to exhibit anti-obesity, anti-inflammatory, anti-diabetic, anti-arteriosclerotic, and weight-reducing effects in humans. Worldwide, the incidences of metabolic diseases have been escalating across all age groups in modern society. Therefore, EGCG is being increasingly investigated to address the problems. This review presents the current updates on the effects of EGCG on metabolic diseases, and highlights evidence related to its safety. Collectively, this review brings more evidence for therapeutic application and further studies on EGCG and its derivatives to alleviate metabolic diseases and non-alcoholic fatty liver diseases.

Abstract
According to the latest consensus statement, fatty liver complicated by specific metabolic abnormalities can be diagnosed as metabolic dysfunction-associated fatty liver disease (MAFLD) in nonobese patients without type 2 diabetes mellitus (T2DM). However, hyperuricemia (HUA), a manifestation of metabolic disorders, is excluded from diagnostic criteria. This study explored the association between HUA and MAFLD in nonobese patients without T2DM. A total of 28,187 participants were recruited from the Examination Center of the China-Japan Friendship Hospital from 2018 to 2022 and divided into four subgroups: nonobese patients without T2DM, obese patients without T2DM, nonobese patients with T2DM, and obese patients with T2DM. MAFLD was diagnosed by ultrasound combined with laboratory examinations. The association of HUA with MAFLD subgroups was performed by logistical regression analysis. The predictive ability of UA for MAFLD subgroups was assessed by receiver operating characteristics (ROC). HUA was positively associated with MAFLD in nonobese patients without T2DM in both males and females, even after adjusting for sex, BMI, dyslipidemia, and abnormal liver function. The association increased gradually with aging, especially in those over 40 yr old. HUA was an independent risk factor for MAFLD in nonobese patients without T2DM. We suggest that UA abnormalities might be considered in the diagnosis of MAFLD in nonobese patients without T2DM.NEW & NOTEWORTHY HUA is an independent risk factor for MAFLD in nonobese patients without T2DM. The association of HUA with MAFLD in nonobese patients without T2DM increased gradually with aging, especially in those over 40 yr old. In nonobese patients without T2DM, univariate analysis showed that females with HUA had a higher risk of MAFLD than males. However, the difference was narrowed after adjustment for confounders.

Abstract
BACKGROUND Previous research has demonstrated flavonoid intake was closely related to hyperuricemia. The purpose of this study was to examine whether flavonoid intake was associated with serum uric acid and hyperuricemia in U.S. adults. METHODS The study sample consisted of 8,760 participants enrolled in the National Health and Nutrition Examination Survey (NHANES) from 2007 to 2010. Flavonoid consumption was measured using a two-day recall questionnaire on dietary intake. Hyperuricemia was defined based on the serum uric acid levels, determined as ≥ 7 mg/dL for males and ≥ 6 mg/dL for females. The study utilized multivariate linear regression to determine the correlation between flavonoid consumption and serum uric acid levels. Additionally, analyses involving multivariate logistic regression and restricted cubic splines (RCS) were conducted to evaluate the potential link between flavonoid consumption and hyperuricemia. All analyses were adjusted for possible confounding variables. RESULTS The study revealed a negative correlation between serum uric acid levels and elevated levels of anthocyanidins and flavanones, with significant p-trends of < 0.001 and 0.02 respectively. The multivariate analysis showed that anthocyanidins and flavanones intake had a significant negative association with the risk of hyperuricemia, with p-trend value being < 0.001 and 0.01, respectively. Flavan-3-ols, flavonols, and all flavonoids exhibited a non-linear association with the incidence of hyperuricemia, with significant p-nonlinear values of < 0.001, 0.04, and 0.01 respectively. CONCLUSION Our study demonstrated that individuals who follow a diet rich in anthocyanins and flavanones had significantly lower serum uric acid levels and a lower incidence of hyperuricemia.

Abstract
Objective Recent epidemiological evidence shows that there is an association between serum uric acid (SUA) levels and nonalcoholic fatty liver disease (NAFLD). The purpose of this meta-analysis is to summarize all available evidence and assess the associations between SUA levels and NAFLD. Methods Using two databases, Web of Science and PubMed, observational studies were applied from the establishment of the databases to June 2022. We used a random effect model to construct the pooled odds ratio (OR) and 95% confidence interval (CI) to appraise the association between SUA levels and NAFLD. The Begg's test was conducted to appraise publication bias. Results A total of 50 studies were included, involving 2,079,710 participants (719,013 NAFLD patients). The prevalence and incidence rates (95% CIs) of NAFLD in the patients with hyperuricemia were 65% (57-73%) and 31% (20-41%), respectively. Compared to participants with lower levels of SUA, the pooled OR (95% CI) of NAFLD in those with higher levels of SUA was 1.88 (95% CI: 1.76-2.00). In the subgroup analyses, we found that SUA levels were positively associated with NAFLD in all subgroups, according to study design, study quality, sample size, sex, comparison, age, or country. Conclusion This meta-analysis shows that increased SUA levels are positively associated with NAFLD. The results suggested that reducing SUA levels can be a potential strategy for the prevention of NAFLD. Registration Number PROSPERO-CRD42022358431.

Abstract
Numerous epidemiological studies have demonstrated that hyperuricemia (HUA) is a risk factor for renal diseases and renal fibrosis. Dietary patterns can influence serum urate levels and hyperuricemic nephropathy (HN). NLRP3 inflammasomes play a crucial role in various inflammatory responses and contribute to HN progression. Chloroquine (CQ) is an anti-inflammatory and disease-modifying anti-rheumatic drug (DMARD) utilized in treating autoimmune diseases such as rheumatoid arthritis and systemic lupus erythematosus. In this study, we examined the effects and underlying mechanisms of CQ in a high-fat-diet (HFD) exacerbated mouse model of HN. C57BL/6 mice were randomized into either a control group or an HN group (induced by adenine/potassium oxonate treatment), followed by a normal diet or HFD, with or without CQ treatment. Our findings revealed that the HN group exhibited elevated serum levels of blood urea nitrogen (BUN) and creatinine compared to the control group. Additionally, the HN + HFD group displayed increased serum levels of uric acid, BUN, and creatinine relative to the control + HFD group. Moreover, the HFD exacerbated renal uric acid crystal deposition and fibrosis in HN mice compared to a normal diet. CQ ameliorated renal dysfunction, as evidenced by reduced serum creatinine levels, renal fibrosis, and renal tubular injury scores, and significantly decreased NLRP3, ASC, caspase-1, and IL-1β levels in HN mice. These findings suggest that CQ inhibits the activation of NLRP3 inflammasomes and may serve as a potential therapeutic strategy for HN treatment.

Abstract
Background The study aims to explore the relationship between obesity and serum uric acid in adolescents by combining body mass index and waist height ratio. Methods 475 adolescents in our study were classified as normal weight without central obesity (NW), normal weight but central obesity (NWCO), overweight or obesity without central obesity (OB) and overweight or obesity with central obesity (OBCO). Odds ratios (OR) and 95% confidence intervals (CI) for hyperuricemia were calculated using a logistic regression model. The dose-response association between obesity indicators and serum uric acid were explored by restricted cubic spline model. Results The highest serum uric acid level and the OR for hyperuricemia were found in the OBCO group, regardless of sex. After controlling for waist height ratio, the risk of hyperuricemia increased with increasing body mass index in boys and girls. The restricted cubic spline model showed that boys had higher ORs for hyperuricemia at the 25th and 75th percentiles of body mass index than for waist height ratio and girls had a higher OR for hyperuricemia than waist height ratio at the 25th percentile of body mass index. Conclusions Hyperuricemia in adolescence was not only associated with the overweight or obesity in BMI, but with the combination of overweight or obesity in BMI and central obesity in WHtR. However, in boys and girls, the increased risk of hyperuricemia associated with elevated body mass index was significantly better than that of waist height ratio.

Association of serum uric acid-to-high-density lipoprotein cholesterol ratio with non-alcoholic fatty liver disease in American adults: a population-based analysis. Abstract
Objective Non-invasive disease indicators are currently limited and need further research due to the increased non-alcoholic fatty liver disease (NAFLD) prevalence worldwide. The serum uric acid-to-high-density lipoprotein cholesterol ratio (UHR) has been recognized as a novel inflammatory and metabolic marker. Herein, we explored the correlation between UHR and the risk of NAFLD in-depth. Methods A total of 3,766 participants were included in our survey, and the National Health and Nutrition Examination Survey (NHANES) 2017-2018 cycle provided the cross-sectional study population. Weighted multivariable logistic regression and multivariate linear regression analyses were performed to assess the association between the UHR and the odds of NAFLD and liver steatosis and fibrosis severity, respectively. Moreover, we explored the non-linear relationship between the UHR and NAFLD by the generalized additive model. Results NAFLD probabilities were statistically demonstrated to be positively correlated with the UHR (OR = 1.331 per SD increase, 95% CI: 1.100, 1.611). The positive connection of the UHR with NAFLD risk persisted significantly in female subjects but not in male subjects in subgroup analyses stratified by gender. The non-linear relationship analysis demonstrated that a UHR between ~20 and 30% suggested a saturation effect of NAFLD risk. Furthermore, a dramatically positive correlation was found between the UHR and hepatic steatosis severity but not fibrosis. Finally, the receiver operating characteristic analysis suggested that UHR had a better predictive value for NAFLD than either serum uric acid (sUA) or high-density lipoprotein cholesterol (HDL) alone [UHR (area under curve): 0.6910; 95% CI: 0.6737-0.7083; P < 0.0001]. Conclusion Our investigation revealed that the elevated UHR level was independently related to an increased NAFLD risk and the severity of liver steatosis in American individuals. The correlation differed according to sex. This non-invasive indicator may enhance the capacity to predict the onset of NAFLD and may uncover alternative therapeutic interventional targets.

Abstract
The prevalence of hyperuricemia in Taiwan is high, and hyperuricemia has been associated with a risk of developing several diseases. Although the traditional risk factors for hyperuricemia are well known, the relationship between heavy metals and hyperuricemia is still undefined. Therefore, the aim of this study was to investigate the relationship between hyperuricemia and heavy metals. A total of 2447 participants (977 males and 1470 females) residing in southern Taiwan were enrolled, and levels of the following heavy metals were measured: lead in blood, and nickel, chromium, manganese, arsenic (As), copper, and cadmium in urine. Hyperuricemia was defined as a serum uric acid level greater than 7.0 mg/dL (416.5 μmol/L) in men and 6.0 mg/dL (357 μmol/L) in women. The participants were divided into two groups: those without hyperuricemia (n = 1821; 74.4%) and those with hyperuricemia (n = 626; 25.6%). Multivariate analysis showed that only high urine As (log per 1 μg/g creatinine; odds ratio, 1.965; 95% confidence interval, 1.449 to 2.664; p < 0.001), young age, male sex, high body mass index, high hemoglobin, high triglycerides, and low estimated glomerular filtration rate were significantly associated with hyperuricemia. In addition, the interactions between Pb × Cd (p = 0.010), Ni × Cu (p = 0.002), and Cr × Cd (p = 0.001) on hyperuricemia were statistically significant. Increasing levels of Pb and Cr yielded an increased prevalence of hyperuricemia, and the effect was progressively greater for increasing Cd. Moreover, increasing levels of Ni yielded an increased prevalence of hyperuricemia, and the effect was progressively greater for increasing Cu. In conclusion, our results show that high urine As is associated with hyperuricemia, and some interactions of heavy metals on hyperuricemia are noted. We also found that young age, male sex, high BMI, high hemoglobin, high triglycerides, and low eGFR were significantly associated with hyperuricemia.

Abstract
BACKGROUND Carpal tunnel syndrome (CTS) has been associated with gout and type 2 diabetes mellitus (T2DM). However, due to insufficient clinical understanding of gout-related CTS and reliance on the diagnostic importance of elevated serum uric acid levels, such cases are prone to missed diagnosis, misdiagnosis, and delayed treatment. In addition, the effect of T2DM on gout - induced carpal tunnel syndrome has not been reported.
CASE SUMMARY Herein, we present an unusual case of CTS and motor dysfunction caused by miliary tophaceous gout and T2DM. The patient presented to the hand and foot clinic with paresthesia of the fingers of both hands, especially at night. The patient was diagnosed with type 2 diabetes a month ago. Ultrasonography revealed bilateral transverse carpal ligament thickening with median nerve compression during hospitalization. The patient was successfully treated with carpal tunnel decompression and tendon release. The postoperative pathological examination revealed typical gout nodules. This case suggests that the presence of T2DM could accelerate tophi formation and worsen CTS symptoms, although no definitive proof in this regard has been described previously.
CONCLUSION Tophi formation may most likely cause the co-occurrence of CTS and flexor dysfunction in gout and incipient diabetes patients.

Abstract
BACKGROUND Uric acid, a formerly-known antioxidant that has recently been linked to numerous inflammatory diseases as a pro-inflammatory and -oxidative mediator in pathological conditions. It is imperative to reassess the association between periodontitis and uric acid locally and systematically. The aim of this systematic review was to systemically evaluate the association between periodontitis and the uric acid (UA) levels in blood, saliva and gingival crevicular fluid (GCF). METHODS Relevant clinical studies up to January 28, 2023 were identified and retrieved from electronic databases including PubMed, Scopus, EMBASE and Web of Science, with periodontitis, uric acid, hyperuricemia and gout as the keywords. The weighted (WMD) or standardized mean difference (SMD) was calculated using fixed- or random-effect models. Methodological heterogeneity was assessed. RESULTS Sixteen eligible observational studies and one RCT were enrolled, which included 1354 patients with periodontitis and 989 controls. Three sample types for UA detection were involved, including blood (n = 8), saliva (n = 9) and GCF (n = 1). Meta-analysis demonstrated an enhanced plasma UA concentration (WMD = 1.00 mg/dL, 95% CI 0.63 to 1.37, P < 0.001) but a decreased salivary UA level (SMD = -0.95, 95% CI -1.23 to -0.68, P < 0.001) in periodontitis versus control. Statistical heterogeneity among the plasma- and saliva-tested studies were moderate (I2 = 58.3%, P = 0.066) and low (I2 = 33.8%, P = 0.196), respectively. CONCLUSIONS Within the limitations of the enrolled studies, it seems that there is an association between periodontitis and increased blood UA and decreased salivary UA. (Registration no. Abstract
Background The significant association between serum uric acid (SUA) and nonalcoholic fatty liver disease (NAFLD) is well documented. In this report, we tested the hypothesis that SUA might improve the widely studied fatty liver index (FLI) to predict NAFLD. Methods A cross-sectional study was performed in a community of Nanjing, China. The population data on sociodemographics, physical examinations, and biochemical tests were collected from July to September 2018. The associations of SUA and FLI with NAFLD were analyzed using linear correlation, multiple linear regressions, binary logistic analyses, and area under receiver-operating characteristic curve (AUROC). Results A total of 3,499 people were included in this study, of which 36.9% had NAFLD. The prevalence of NAFLD increased with the increase of SUA levels (all P <.05). Logistic regression analyses revealed that SUA was significantly associated with an increased risk of NAFLD (all P <.001). The NAFLD predictive value after combining SUA with FLI was superior to FLI, especially in females (AUROCSUA + FLI = 0.911 vs. AUROCFLI = 0.903, P <.05). The reclassification of NAFLD also significantly improved, based on net reclassification improvement (0.053, 95% confidence interval [CI]: 0.022-0.085, P <.001) and integrated discrimination improvement (0.096, 95% CI: 0.090-0.102, P <.001). A regression formula of this combined algorithm was proposed as: The novel formula = 0.032* waist circumference + 0.303* body mass index + 1.301* natural logarithm of triglyceride + 0.478* natural logarithm of glutamyl transpeptidase + 0.002* SUA- 18.823. At the cutoff value of 13.3, the sensitivity and specificity of this model were 89.2% and 78.4%, respectively. Conclusions SUA level was positively associated with NAFLD prevalence. A new formula combining SUA with FLI may serve as a better indicator to predict NAFLD compared to FLI, especially in females.

Abstract
Phthalate metabolites have been detected from urine in most of the US population and have become a public health problem. However, the association between phthalate metabolites and hyperuricemia has been scarcely studied so far. We aimed to evaluate if phthalate metabolites were associated with hyperuricemia in US adults. A total of 8816 participants of the National Health and Nutrition Examination Survey (NHANES) from 2005 to 2018 were included in our study. We used multivariable logistic regression models and restricted cubic spline (RCS) models to explore the association between urinary phthalate metabolites and hyperuricemia. Then, stratified analyses were conducted by sex and age. The prevalence of hyperuricemia in the study sample was 20.35%. Compared to the lowest quantile, the odds ratios (ORs) and 95% confidence intervals (CIs) for hyperuricemia were all statistically significant in following phthalate metabolites: 1.34 (1.13-1.58) for the second quartile in Mono-isobutyl phthalate (MiBP), 1.21 (1.01-1.46) for the highest quartile in Mono-(carboxyoctyl) phthalate (MCOP), 0.66 (0.56-0.76) for the second quartile in Mono-(2-ethyl)-hexyl phthalate (MEHP), 1.22 (1.05-1.43) for quartile 2 in Benzyl butyl phthalate (ΣBBP), and 1.43 (1.22-1.66) for the third quartile in high molecular-weight phthalate (ΣHigh MWP), respectively. Our results indicate that several urinary phthalate metabolites are positively associated with the odds of hyperuricemia.

Abstract
BACKGROUND The association between hyperuricemia and metabolic dysfunction-associated fatty liver disease (MAFLD) remains undetermined. This study aimed to examine the association of serum uric acid (SUA) levels with prevalence and long-term mortality of MAFLD in a nationally representative sample of US adults. METHODS This analysis included 11,177 participants from the Third National Health and Nutrition Examination Survey (NHANES III, 1988-1994) with matched mortality data until 2019. We used logistic regression models to estimate the adjusted odd ratios (ORs) for factors associated with risk of MAFLD, and applied restricted cubic spline (RCS) regression to assess the non-linear associations of SUA levels with all-cause and cause-specific mortality of MAFLD. We also used Cox proportional hazards regression analysis to estimate hazard ratios (HRs) for the mortality. RESULTS A higher SUA level contributed to a significant increased risk of MAFLD. every 1 mg/dL increment of SUA level was related to 17% (95% CI 9-24%) increased risk of MAFLD. Furthermore, a U-shaped association for males and a J-shaped association for females was discovered between SUA levels and all-cause mortality in participants with MAFLD. Specifically, among males, when SUA > 6.7 mg/dL, the higher SUA showed increased risk of cardio-cerebrovascular disease (CVD) mortality [HR (95% CI): 1.29 (1.05-1.58)]. As for females, only when SUA > 5.5 mg/dL, it showed a significantly positive association with risk of CVD and cancer mortality [HR (95% CI) 1.62 (1.24-2.13) and 1.95 (1.41-2.68)]. CONCLUSIONS Elevated SUA level is significantly associated with an increased risk of MAFLD. Besides, SUA level is also a predictor of long-term mortality of MAFLD.

Abstract
BACKGROUND Phthalates exposure might cause kidney damage and a potential risk for hyperuricemia. However, direct evidence on phthalates and hyperuricemia is somewhat limited. OBJECTIVE To examine associations between 10 phthalates metabolites and hyperuricemia in a large-scale representative of the U.S. METHODS A cross-sectional study of 6865 participants aged over 20 from NHANES 2007-2016 was performed. All participants had complete data on ten phthalate metabolites (MECPP, MnBP, MEHHP, MEOHP, MiBP, cx-MiNP, MCOP, MCPP, MEP, MBzP), hyperuricemia, and covariates. We used multivariable logistics regression, restricted cubic splines (RCS) model, and Bayesian kernel machine regression (BKMR) models to assess single, nonlinear, and mixed relationships between phthalate metabolites and hyperuricemia. As a complement, we also assessed the relationship between phthalate metabolites and serum uric acid (SUA) levels. RESULTS The multivariable logistics regression showed that MECPP, MEOHP, MEHHP, MBzP, and MiBP were generally positively associated with hyperuricemia (PFDR < 0.05), especially in MiBP (Q3 (OR (95 %): 1.31 (1.02, 1.68)) and Q4 (OR (95 %): 1.68 (1.27, 2.24)), compared to Q1). All ten phthalate metabolites had a linear dose-response relationship with hyperuricemia in the RCS model (P for non-linear >0.05). BKMR showed that mixed phthalate metabolites were associated with a higher risk of hyperuricemia, with MBzP contributing the most (groupPIP = 0.999, condPIP = 1.000). We observed the consistent results between phthalate metabolites and SUA levels in three statistical models. The relationship between phthalate metabolites and hyperuricemia remained in the sensitivity analysis. CONCLUSIONS The present study suggests that exposure to phthalates, individually or jointly, might increase the risk of hyperuricemia. Since hyperuricemia influences on the quality of life, more explorations are needed to confirm these findings.

Abstract
BACKGROUND Previous studies have found a relationship between hypertension or cardiovascular disease and simple renal cysts (SRCs) in health check-up population, but SRCs incidence is still controversially associated with serum uric acid (SUA) concentration in the nondiabetic participants. In this single-centre nest case-control study, serum uric acid levels were examined in relation to the incidence of SRCs in nondiabetic individuals. METHOD Participants who underwent at least two renal ultrasound examinations with an interval of more than 12 months were enrolled. The results of clinical examinations, laboratory tests and abdominal ultrasound tests were recorded for each participant and analysed in this retrospective observation study. RESULT A total of 144 control and 144 SRC patients were ultimately confirmed and included in further analysis. Hyperuricaemia (OR 2.846, 95% CI 1.519-5.332, p = 0.001) was significantly correlated with SRC formation according to multivariable analysis. In both the male and female groups, SRC patients had significantly higher serum uric acid levels compared with control subjects. In 54 SRC patients with cyst puncture, the serum uric acid concentration was positively correlated with the uric acid concentration in cyst fluid (r = 0.6144, p < 0.0001). The serum uric acid concentration was positively correlated with the maximum cyst diameter in the SRC patients (r = 0.4531, p < 0.0001). CONCLUSION In a nondiabetic population, hyperuricaemia was significantly independently associated with a higher SRCs incidence. In SRC participants with cyst puncture, the SUA level had a significantly positive correlation with the uric acid level in cyst fluid. In SRC patients, the SUA level had a significantly positive correlation with cyst maximum diameter.

Abstract
AIM The present study was conducted to assess the relationship between hyperuricemia and anemia in Korean adults with or without metabolic syndrome (MetS). METHODS Data from 6073 adults (age ≥ 20 years) in the Eighth Korean National Health and Nutrition Examination Survey (2019) were analyzed. RESULTS Several key findings were identified. First, after adjusting for the related variables, the hemoglobin [Hb] level in the hyperuricemia subgroup (uric acid [UA] ≥ 7.0 mg/dL in men or ≥ 6.0 mg/dL in women) was higher than in the normouricemia subgroup (UA < 7.0 mg/dL in men or < 6.0 mg/dL in women) in subjects with non-MetS (p = 0.005), whereas it was lower than in the normouricemia subgroup in subjects with MetS (p = 0.032). Second, after adjusting for the related variables, the odds ratio (OR) of anemia (Hb < 13.0 g/dL in men or < 12 g/dL in women), using the normouricemia subgroup as a reference, was negatively significant for the hyperuricemia subgroup in subjects with non-MetS (OR, 0.478; 95 % CI, 0.300-0.761) but positively significant for the hyperuricemia subgroup in subjects with MetS (OR, 1.765; 95 % CI, 1.160-2.198). CONCLUSIONS Hyperuricemia was associated with a decrease in anemia in non-MetS but an increase in anemia in MetS.

Abstract
Background: Chinese herbal medicine (CHM) has the advantage of being safe and effective and has been widely used in clinical practice for the treatment of type 2 diabetes mellitus (T2DM) with hyperuricemia (HUA), but its overall efficacy and safety remain unclear. This study aimed to evaluate the efficacy and safety of CHM for the treatment of T2DM with HUA based on randomized controlled trials (RCTs) to provide clinical evidence. Methods: The protocol evaluated in this study is registered with PROSPERO (CRD42022351519). As of November 2022, eight databases were searched, and RCTs of CHM for the treatment of T2DM with HUA were included. Outcome indicators observed included fasting blood glucose (FBG), 2-h postprandial glucose (2hPG), glycated hemoglobin (HbA1c), uric acid (UA), triglycerides (TG), total cholesterol (TC), overall effectiveness, and adverse events. Utilizing Review Manager 5.4, Stata V14.0, and GRADEpro, the included studies were evaluated, and the quality of the evidence was determined. Results: 18 RCTs covering 1,311 patients were included in this study. The results of the study demonstrated that the combination of CHM and western medicine (WM) was more effective in treating patients with T2DM with HUA than WM alone, with significant improvements in FBG (weighted mean differences (WMD) = -0.60.95% confidence interval (CI) [-0.81, -0.40], p < 0.00001), 2hPG (WMD = -1.12.95% CI [-1.64, -0.60], p < 0.0001), HbA1c (WMD = -0.80.95% CI [-1.04, -0.56], p < 0.00001), UA (WMD = -53.47.95% CI [-67.45, -39.48], p < 0.00001), TG (WMD = -0.56.95% CI [-0.74, -0.38], p < 0.00001), TC (WMD = -0.49.95% CI [-0.65, -0.33], p < 0.00001), and overall effective rate (risk ratio (RR) = 1.29.95%CI [1.13, 1.48], p = 0.0002). The quality of evidence for all outcomes was low. Conclusion: Compared with WM alone, the combination of CHM and WM was more effective in treating patients with T2DM with HUA, with significant improvements in glucose metabolism, uric acid, and lipids. However, further evaluation by high-quality RCT results is needed due to the low quality and high heterogeneity of the evidence. Abstract
PURPOSE As one of the most common chronic liver diseases, metabolic dysfunction-associated fatty liver disease (MAFLD) had different prognoses between mild and moderate-severe levels. Serum uric acid to serum creatinine ratio (sUA/Cr) can reflect the overall metabolic status of the body. To explore a convenient indicator to screen MAFLD and distinguish the severity of the disease, this study analyzed the correlation between sUA/Cr and the severity of MAFLD. METHODS 228 participants were enrolled and divided into 2 groups, including mild MAFLD and non-MAFLD group and moderate-severe MAFLD group, based on liver/spleen computed tomography (CT) ratios. The correlations between sUA/Cr and the severity of MAFLD were analyzed by logistic and linear regression. Receiver operating characteristics (ROCs) analyzed the predictive ability of sUA/Cr for the severity of MAFLD expressed by the area under curve (AUC). RESULTS The level of sUA/Cr was higher in themoderate-severe MAFLD group than mild MAFLD and non-MAFLD group (6.14 ± 1.55 vs. 5.51 ± 1.19, P = 0.008). After adjustment for confounders, the correlation analysis showed that patients with elevated sUA/Cr had a higher risk of moderate-severe MAFLD (OR: 1.350, P = 0.036). A higher sUA/Cr level was associated with lower liver CT values (β = -0.133, P = 0.039) and liver/spleen CT ratio (β = -0.154, P = 0.016). sUA/Cr had the ability to discriminate the severity of MAFLD (AUC: 0.623). CONCLUSION sUA/Cr was positively associated with the risk of moderate-severe MAFLD and had the predictive ability to discriminate the moderate-severe MAFLD from mild MAFLD and non-MAFLD. The sUA/Cr level was suggested to be monitored and controlled in the screening and treatment of MAFLD.

Abstract
Simultaneous detection of uric acid and glucose using a non-invasive approach can be a promising strategy for related diseases, e.g., diabetes, gout, kidney disease, and cardiovascular disease. In this study, we have proposed a dual-function wearable electrochemical sensor for uric acid and glucose detection in sweat. The sensor with a four-electrode system was prepared by printing the ink on a common rubber glove. CV and chronoamperometry were used to characterize the prepared sensor's electrochemical sensing performance. The sensors exhibited the linear range from 0 to 1.6 mM and 0 to 3.7 mM towards uric acid and glucose electrochemical sensing in phosphate-buffered solution, with the corresponding limit of detection of 3.58 μM and 9.10 μM obtained, respectively. Moreover, the sensors had shown their feasibility of real sample sensing in sweat. The linear detection range for uric acid (0 to 40 μM) and glucose (0 to 1.6 mM) in the sweat can well cover their concentration range in physiological conditions. The prepared dual-function wearable electrochemical sensor features easy preparation, fast detection, high sensitivity, high selectivity, and the practical application potential in uric acid and glucose sensing.

Abstract
Background Fatty liver, obesity, and dyslipidemia are associated with prediabetes or diabetes risk, and hyperuricemia co-exists. The present study evaluated the role of multiple mediators, namely, fatty liver, body mass index (BMI), and dyslipidemia, in the association between hyperuricemia and diabetes status. Methods Baseline data from the ongoing Fuqing cohort (5,336 participants) were analyzed to investigate the association of hyperuricemia with diabetes status using a multinomial logistic regression model. Furthermore, causal mediation analysis with the weighting-based approach was performed to estimate hyperuricemia's total natural direct effect (tnde), total natural indirect effect (tnie), and total effect (te) on prediabetes and diabetes risk, mediating jointly via fatty liver, BMI, and dyslipidemia. Results In multinomial analysis without considering mediators' effects, hyperuricemia was associated with a higher risk of prediabetes only (odds ratio: 1.25; 95% CI: 1.09-1.43; p < 0.001). When fatty liver, BMI, and dyslipidemia were considered as multiple mediators in the association, hyperuricemia was linked to both prediabetes [tnde: 1.11, 95% CI: 1.04-1.11; tnie: 1.07, 95% CI: 1.05-1.09; and overall proportion mediated (pm): 42%, 95% CI: 27%-73%] and diabetes risk (tnde: 0.96, 95% CI: 0.82-1.14; tnie: 1.25, 95% CI: 1.18-1.33; and pm: 100%, 95% CI: 57%-361%). Hyperuricemia showed significant tnde, te, and tnie, mediated by fatty liver jointly with dyslipidemia (pm = 17%) or BMI (pm = 35%), on prediabetes risk. Conclusion Hyperuricemia could increase prediabetes or diabetes risk, partially mediated by fatty liver, BMI, and dyslipidemia. Fatty liver is the crucial mediator in the association between hyperuricemia and prediabetes.

Abstract
Background The prevalence of metabolism-related fatty liver disease (MAFLD) has been rarely reported in hospital staffs. The aim of this study was to assess the prevalence and risk factors for MAFLD in hospital staffs aged ≥18 years. Methods Based on type B ultrasonic, hospital staffs who underwent medical examinations at the second Affiliated Hospital of Hainan Medical University from January 2022 to March 2022 were classified into health control group (661 subjects) and MAFLD group (223 subjects), demographic, biochemical and blood examination information were compared between 2 groups. Independent risk factors for MAFLD were determined by logistic regression. Predictive values of risk factors of MAFLD were evaluated by receiver operating characteristic (ROC) curves. Results The prevalence of MAFLD was 33.7%. Older age (OR=1.08, p<0.001), H. pylori infection (OR=0.234, p=0.02), triglyceride-glucose (TyG) (OR=7.001, p<0.001), low-density lipoprotein cholesterol (LDL-C) (OR=2.076, p=0.028), red blood cell (RBC) (OR=2.386, p=0.001), eating out (OR=0.048, p=0.001), regular exercise (OR=23.017, p<0.001), and overweight (OR=3.891, p=0.003) were independently associated factors for MAFLD. The AUC of model predicting MAFLD is 0.910 [95% CI (0.886, 0.934)], with 0.794 sensitivity, 0.908 specificity. The diagnostic value of model was higher in the female MAFLD group after stratified analysis according to gender. The model showed that TyG was the factor contributing more to MAFLD. The diagnostic value of TyG was higher in the female MAFLD group than male MAFLD group. Conclusion The prevalence of MAFLD among hospital staffs was 33.7%. TyG can be used to predict MAFLD especially for female hospital staffs for early intervention.

Abstract
Purpose The triglyceride-glucose (TyG) index is a new index of insulin resistance (IR), and its association with hyperuricemia (HUA) is unclear. The aim of this study was to investigate whether TyG is an independent risk factor for hyperuricemia (HUA) in patients with nonalcoholic fatty liver disease (NAFLD). Patients and Methods We retrospectively analyzed 461 patients with ultrasound-confirmed NAFLD and calculated the TyG index. Multivariate logistic regression was used to analyze the relationship between the TyG index and HUA in NAFLD patients. The correlation between the TyG index and HUA was further confirmed by a restricted cubic spline. Furthermore, the stability of the association between TyG index and HUA was examined using subgroup analysis. Receiver operating characteristic (ROC) curves were constructed to evaluate the predictive value of the TyG index on HUA. Multivariate linear regression was used to analyze the linear relationship between the TyG index and serum uric acid. Results A total of 166 HUA patients and 295 non-HUA patients were included in the study. The results of multivariate logistic regression analysis showed that after controlling the confounding risk factors, TyG was still an independent risk factor for HUA (OR = 2.00, 95% CI: 1.38 -2.91, p < 0.001). Restricted cubic splines showed that HUA risk increased linearly with TyG across the entire TyG range. The ROC curve showed that TyG index was better than triglyceride in predicting HUA in NAFLD patients, with AUC values of 0.62 and 0.59, respectively. Multiple linear regression analysis showed that TyG index was significantly positively correlated with blood uric acid (B = 1.37, 95% CI: 0.67-2.08, p < 0.001). Conclusion TyG index is an independent risk factor for HUA in patients with NAFLD. The increase of the TyG index level is closely related to the occurrence and development of HUA in patients with NAFLD.

Abstract
Previous studies focused on the relationships between Serum Uric Acid (SUA) and lipids have found an association mainly with triglycerides. Furthermore, previous studies on adiposity indices have been focused on the evaluation of the Visceral Adiposity Index (VAI). The present study was aimed at providing within the same population a systematic evaluation of lipids and adiposity indices with SUA, employing both the classic cutoff for hyperuricemia and the newly one identified by the Uric Acid Right for Heart Health (URRAH) study. We analyzed data collected in 1892 subjects of the Pressioni Arteriose Monitorate E loro Associazioni (PAMELA) study with available SUA, lipid profile and variables necessary to calculate VAI, Cardio-Metabolic Index (CMI) and Lipid Accumulation Product (LAP). At linear regression model (corrected for confounders) SUA correlated with all the lipids values (with the strongest β for triglycerides) and adiposity indices. When the two different cutoffs were compared, the URRAH one was significantly related to atherogenic lipids profile (OR 1.207 for LDL and 1.33 for non-HDL, P < 0.001) while this was not the case for the classic one. Regarding adiposity indices the classic cutoff displays highest OR as compared to the URRAH one. In conclusions, newly reported URRAH cutoff for hyperuricemia better relate to atherogenic lipoprotein (LDL and non-HDL) when compared to the classic one. The opposite has been found for adiposity indexes where the classic cut-off seems to present highest performance. Among adiposity indexes, LAP present the highest OR for the relationship with hyperuricemia.

Abstract
Elevated serum ferritin and uric acid levels are common in patients with fatty liver disease. This study assessed the association between serum ferritin and uric acid levels and liver fibrosis in subjects with lean metabolic dysfunction-associated fatty liver disease (MAFLD). This cross-sectional study used data from a community screening examination for metabolic syndrome from December 2018 to September 2019 at Keelung Chang Gung Memorial Hospital. Subjects with lean MAFLD were defined as those with a body mass index (BMI) < 23 kg/m2 and hepatic steatosis according to the MAFLD criteria. A total of 182 lean subjects were included and were divided into lean MAFLD and lean healthy groups. Serum ferritin and uric acid concentrations were positively correlated with liver fibrosis, regardless of whether FIB-4, APRI, or NFS were used as references. Univariate logistic regression analysis showed that age and uric acid were associated with advanced liver fibrosis. After adjusting for potential confounders, only uric acid level was statistically significant in predicting the advanced liver fibrosis (OR = 6.907 (1.111−42.94), p = 0.038) in the lean MAFLD group. We found that an elevated serum uric acid level is an independent factor associated with advanced liver fibrosis in lean MAFLD subjects by noninvasive fibrosis scores.

Abstract
This study aimed to evaluate whether the single nucleotide polymorphisms of ATP-binding cassette subfamily G member 2 (ABCG2) and solute carrier family 2 member 9 (SLC2A9) affect individual blood uric acid levels using pyrosequencing. ABCG2 (rs2231142, rs72552713, rs2231137), SLC2A9 (rs3734553, rs3733591, rs16890979), and individual uric acid levels were prospectively analyzed in 250 healthy young Korean male participants. Prominent differences in uric acid levels of the alleles were observed in the SLC2A9 rs3733591 polymorphism: wild-type (AA) vs. heterozygote (AG), 0.7 mg/dL (p < 0.0001); AA vs. mutant type (GG), 1.32 mg/dL (p < 0.0001); and AG vs. GG, 0.62 mg/dL (p < 0.01). In ABCG2 single nucleotide polymorphisms (SNPs), the statistically significant differences in uric acid levels were only found in rs2231142 between CC vs. AA (1.06 mg/dL; p < 0.001), and CC vs. CA (0.59 mg/dL; p < 0.01). Serum uric acid levels based on the ABCG2 and SLC2A9 diplotype groups were also compared. The uric acid levels were the lowest in the CC/AA diplotype and highest in the AA/AG diplotype. In addition, the SNP SLC2A9 rs3733591 tended to increase the uric acid levels when the ABCG2 rs2231142 haplotypes were fixed. In conclusion, both the ABCG2 rs2231142 and SLC2A9 rs3733591 polymorphisms may additively elevate blood uric acid levels.

Abstract
Prospective evidence on the association of obesity and metabolic health status and its transition over time with the risk of hyperuricemia in the Chinese population is limited. This study aims to investigate the phenotypic transition characteristics of metabolic obesity in Chinese adults and its association with hyperuricemia. Using the China Health and Retirement Longitudinal Survey (CHARLS) survey data in 2011 and 2015, 6059 adults aged ≥ 18 years were selected as the research people. The participants' general information, living habits, blood sample testing, and blood uric acid testing data during follow-up were extracted. According to body weight and metabolic health status, obesity phenotypes were divided into: metabolically normal weight group (MHNW), metabolically normal overweight/obesity group (MHOWO); metabolically abnormal normal weight group (MUNW); metabolically abnormal overweight/obese group (MUHOWO). Multiple linear regression was used to evaluate the correlation between metabolic obesity phenotype and serum uric acid level, and logistic regression model was used to analyze the association of metabolic obesity phenotype and transition with the risk of hyperuricemia. The average age of all subjects was (58.62 ± 8.93) years old, and 42.1% were male. The MHOWO phenotype was present in 19.2% of the general population and 48.6% of the baseline who were overweight or obese population. During the 4-year follow-up period, only 10.7% of participants with MHNW at baseline converted to MHOWO. Among MHOWO participants, 21.2% converted to MUHOWO. MHOWO also increased the risk of hyperuricemia (OR, 1.57; 95% CI 1.15-2.13; P = .004), both in obese and normal-weight individuals, even when metabolic status changed from unhealthy to healthy. Risk of hyperuricemia was high among those who remained metabolically unhealthy but of normal weight (OR, 3.09; 95% CI 1.51-6.30; P = .001). MHOWO also increases the risk of hyperuricemia, and MHOWO remains stable or changes to MUHOWO, which increases the risk of hyperuricemia. Therefore, close attention should be paid to the transition of metabolic health status over time, and individualized prevention strategies should be focused on metabolically unhealthy and obese individuals.

Abstract
Triglyceride-glucose (TyG) index has been proposed to be a simple, economical, and reliable marker of insulin resistance. We aimed to investigate whether TyG is an independent predictor of hyperuricemia in diabetic kidney disease (DKD) populations by conducting a cross-sectional and longitudinal study. A total of 6,471 patients were enrolled in cross-sectional analysis, and 3,634 patients without hyperuricemia at the baseline were included in longitudinal analysis and were followed up for a median of 23.0 months. Hyperuricemia was categorized as a serum uric acid level ≥ 420 umol/L (7 mg/dL). In this study, 19.58% of participants had hyperuricemia. In the cross-sectional analysis, multivariate logistics regression analysis showed that the ORs (95% CI) for hyperuricemia in the second, third, and fourth TyG quartiles were 1.40 (95% CI 0.73-2.65), 1.69 (95% CI 0.90-3.18), and 4.53 (95% CI 2.39-8.57), respectively, compared with the first quartile. Longitudinally, the Kaplan-Meier survival analysis showed that higher TyG levels predicted higher incidence of hyperuricemia. Multivariate Cox regression model revealed that the hazard ratios for hyperuricemia in the upper quartiles of the TyG index were 1.69 (95% CI 0.97-2.93), 2.23 (95% CI 1.33-3.75), and 2.50 (95% CI 1.46-4.27), respectively, compared with the first quartile. Moreover, the subgroup analyses revealed that the relationship between TyG levels and hyperuricemia was robust in DKD patients. Our findings indicate a significant independent correlation between the TyG index and the risk of hyperuricemia in DKD patients.

Abstract
BACKGROUND Soluble Klotho (S-Klotho) is an anti-aging protein mainly secreted by the kidneys. Hyperuricemia is prevalent among middle-aged and elderly individuals, which affects the development of various chronic diseases. However, there are relatively few studies investigating the association between plasma S-Klotho levels and hyperuricemia in middle-aged and elderly individuals. This study sought to clarify the relationship between S-Klotho and the risk of hyperuricemia in middle-aged and elderly people. METHODS During 2007-2016, a total of 50,588 people participated in the National Health and Nutrition Examination Survey. Finally, 12,441 middle-aged and elderly people (aged 40-79) completed the soluble Klotho tests and had obtained complete data. S-Klotho was detected by ELISA kit, and the relationship between S-Klotho and hyperuricemia was assessed by multiple logistic regression. Hyperuricemia is defined as serum uric acid levels higher than or equal to 420 mmol/l in men and 360 mmol/l in women. RESULTS In the middle-aged and elderly, plasma S-Klotho levels were negatively correlated with hyperuricemia, and there was a saturation effect. The inflection point of S-Klotho was 927.8 pg/ml (logarithmic likelihood ratio test = 0.002). When plasma S-Klotho < 927.8 pg/ml, the prevalence of hyperuricemia in middle-aged and elderly individuals with higher levels of S-Klotho decreased by 25.6% compared with those with low levels of S-Klotho [Q4 vs Q1, OR: 0.744, 95%CI: (0.634, 0.874), P < 0.001]; In different age groups, S-Klotho had a significantly greater effect on hyperuricemia in middle-aged people [age: 40-65 years, Q4 vs Q1, OR (95%CI): 0.69 (0.58, 0.82), P < 0.001; Age > 65 years: Q4 vs Q1, OR (95%CI): 0.72 (0.56, 0.92), P = 0.008)].When the level of S-Klotho was higher, the risk of hyperuricemia in men was lower than that in women [male: Q4 vs Q1, OR (95%CI): 0.67 (0.56, 0.81), P < 0.001; female: Q4 vs Q1 (95%CI):0.72 (0.58, 0.88), P < 0.001]. CONCLUSIONS In middle-aged and elderly individuals, plasma S-Klotho levels were inversely correlated with hyperuricemia, with a saturation effect. Given the limitations of the research results, the underlying mechanism between S-Klotho and hyperuricemia should be further explored.

Abstract
Hyperuricemia is a common disease caused by a high level of uric acid. Urate transporter 1 (URAT1) is an important protein and mediates approximately 90% of uric acid reabsorption. Therefore, the URAT1 inhibitor is a class of uricosuric medicines widely used in the clinic for the treatment of hyperuricemia. To find the new medicine with stronger URAT1 inhibition and lower toxicity, researchers have been exploring natural products. This study systematically summarizes the natural products with URAT1 inhibition. The results show that many natural products are potential URAT1 inhibitors, such as flavonoids, terpenoids, alkaloids, coumarins, stilbenes, and steroids, among which flavonoids are the most promising source of URAT1 inhibitors. It is worth noting that most studies have focused on finding natural products with inhibition of URAT1 and have not explored their activities and mechanisms toward URAT1. By reviewing the few existing studies of the structure-activity relationship and analyzing common features of natural products with URAT1 inhibition, we speculate that the rigid ring structure and negative charge may be the keys for natural products to produce URAT1 inhibition. In conclusion, natural products are potential URAT1 inhibitors, and exploring the mechanism of action and structure-activity relationship will be an important research direction in the future.

Abstract
Purpose This research aimed to identify independent risk factors for hyperuricemia (HUA) in diabetic kidney disease (DKD) patients and develop an HUA risk model based on a retrospective study in Ningbo, China. Patients and methods Six hundred and ten DKD patients attending the two hospitals between January 2019 and December 2020 were enrolled in this research and randomized to the training and validation cohorts based on the corresponding ratio (7:3). Independent risk factors associated with HUA were identified by multivariable logistic regression analysis. The characteristic variables of the HUA risk prediction model were screened out by the least absolute shrinkage and selection operator (LASSO) combined with 10-fold cross-validation, and the model was presented by nomogram. The C-index and receiver operating characteristic (ROC) curve, calibration curve and Hosmer-Lemeshow test, and decision curve analysis (DCA) were performed to evaluate the discriminatory power, degree of fitting, and clinical applicability of the risk model. Results Body mass index (BMI), HbA1c, estimated glomerular filtration rate (eGFR), and hyperlipidemia were identified as independent risk factors for HUA in the DKD population. The characteristic variables (gender, family history of T2DM, drinking history, BMI, and hyperlipidemia) were screened out by LASSO combined with 10-fold cross-validation and included as predictors in the HUA risk prediction model. In the training cohort, the HUA risk model showed good discriminatory power with a C-index of 0.761 (95% CI: 0.712-0.810) and excellent degree of fit (Hosmer-Lemeshow test, P > 0.05), and the results of the DCA showed that the prediction model could be beneficial for patients when the threshold probability was 9-79%. Meanwhile, the risk model was also well validated in the validation cohort, where the C-index was 0.843 (95% CI: 0.780-0.906), the degree of fit was good, and the DCA risk threshold probability was 7-100%. Conclusion The development of risk models contributes to the early identification and prevention of HUA in the DKD population, which is vital for preventing and reducing adverse prognostic events in DKD.

Abstract
AIMS Higher serum uric acid (UA) may impair endothelial function. However, population-based evidence examining the association between serum UA levels and endothelial function remains to be limited. Thus, in this study, we aimed to investigate this in the general population. METHODS In this cross-sectional study, 1000 participants (496 males and 504 females), aged 30-79 years, free from a history of gout, have undergone both serum UA and brachial artery flow-mediated dilation (FMD) measurements. Participants were divided into four groups based on serum UA quartiles. Logistic regression models were used to calculate odds ratios (ORs) for low FMD according to the serum UA levels. RESULTS In total, 203 participants (138 males and 65 females) with %FMD ≤ 5.0% were identified to have endothelial dysfunction. The multivariable OR of low FMD for highest quartiles vs. lowest quartiles was 2.39 (95% confidence interval [CI]: 1.32-4.34), while OR per 1-standard deviation (SD) increment was 1.28 (95% CI: 1.04-1.56). The positive association was noted to be more evident in females (OR per 1-SD increment: 1.46; 95% CI: 1.08-1.96) than in males and confined to individuals not using antihypertensive medications. The ORs per 1-SD increment were 1.01 (95% CI: 0.68-1.50) among individuals using antihypertensive medications and 1.43 (95% CI: 1.12-1.81) among individuals not using antihypertensive medications. CONCLUSION Higher serum UA was positively associated with the prevalence of endothelial dysfunction in samples of the general Japanese population and that positive association was confined to individuals not using antihypertensive medications.

Abstract
Background The clinical course of coronavirus disease (COVID-19) is diverse, and the usefulness of phenotyping in predicting the severity or prognosis of the disease has been demonstrated overseas. This study aimed to investigate clinically meaningful phenotypes in Japanese COVID-19 patients using cluster analysis. Methods From April 2020 to May 2021, data from inpatients aged ≥ 18 years diagnosed with COVID-19 and who agreed to participate in the study were collected. A total of 1322 Japanese patients were included. Hierarchical cluster analysis was performed using variables reported to be associated with COVID-19 severity or prognosis, namely, age, sex, obesity, smoking history, hypertension, diabetes mellitus, malignancy, chronic obstructive pulmonary disease, hyperuricemia, cardiovascular disease, chronic liver disease, and chronic kidney disease. Results Participants were divided into four clusters: Cluster 1, young healthy (n = 266, 20.1%); Cluster 2, middle-aged (n = 245, 18.5%); Cluster 3, middle-aged obese (n = 435, 32.9%); and Cluster 4, elderly (n = 376, 28.4%). In Clusters 3 and 4, sore throat, dysosmia, and dysgeusia tended to be less frequent, while shortness of breath was more frequent. Serum lactate dehydrogenase, ferritin, KL-6, d-dimer, and C-reactive protein levels tended to be higher in Clusters 3 and 4. Although Cluster 3 had a similar age as Cluster 2, it tended to have poorer outcomes. Both Clusters 3 and 4 tended to exhibit higher rates of oxygen supplementation, intensive care unit admission, and mechanical ventilation, but the mortality rate tended to be lower in Cluster 3. Conclusions We have successfully performed the first phenotyping of COVID-19 patients in Japan, which is clinically useful in predicting important outcomes, despite the simplicity of the cluster analysis method that does not use complex variables.

Abstract
Alterations in lipid and lipoprotein metabolism are factors that trigger several negative metabolic complications. Hyperlipidemia is the starting point for the development of comorbidities of the cardiovascular system, such as atherosclerosis. The search for compounds that reduce high levels of total cholesterol and triglycerides has been widely reported in several publications in the literature. Phthalimide derivatives have been extensively researched with various biological actions. In this study we evaluated the antihyperlipidemic ability of three phthalimide derivatives (FGT-2, FGT-3 and FGT-4) on a model of obesity and insulin resistance in mice. The animals were submitted to a hyperlipid diet for 60 days. On the thirtieth day they were treated with phthalimides (20 mg/kg). The positive control group was treated with Simvastatin (20 mg/kg) and the negative control received only the carboxymethylcellulose vehicle. Biochemical and histological analyzes of all groups were analyzed. The animals treated with phthalimidic derivatives had a reduction in total cholesterol, low density and very low density lipoproteins (LDL-c and VLDL-c), triglycerides and fasting glycemia when compared to the negative control group. The treated animals also showed good results when analyzing the atherogenic indexes Castelli i and II and the ratio Triglycerides/HDL-c. In the oral glucose tolerance test and in the insulin tolerance test, animals treated with phthalimides were more sensitive to the action of the hormone regulating carbohydrate uptake. In the evaluation of the transaminases (AST/ALT), the animals of the group treated with phthalimides presented a lower elevation than the other groups of the experiment, the same observed with the uric acid evaluation. Histological analyzes were performed on liver, kidney, heart and pancreas samples. The groups treated with the compounds FGT-2 and FGT3 presented discrete alterations in the liver and kidney. FGT-4 did not present histological alterations for both tissues and the three phthalimide derivatives did not cause alterations in the other organs. These results suggest that the phthalimides tested can act as antihyperlipidemic agents and have a pleiotropic action, by acting also reducing glycemia in insulin resistance model mimicking diabetes mellitus type 2. These compounds may appear as a new approach in the treatment of obesity and complications, which are multifaceted.

Abstract
BackgroundTransient elastography is an ultrasound-based method to detect non-alcoholic fatty liver disease (NAFLD). Despite the simultaneously rising prevalence of fatty liver and metabolic disease, further information about metabolic risk indicators of fatty liver is still necessary.MethodsA Southern Italian population sample with obesity (N = 87) was cross-sectionally explored for associations among the presence of NAFLD, assessed by FibroScan, and clinical, biochemical and anthropometric parameters. Inclusion criteria were age >18 years, BMI ≥ 25 kg/m2, no ongoing supplemental or drug therapy, including oral contraceptives or osteoporosis medications; exclusion criteria were pregnancy, endocrinological diseases, cardiovascular diseases, neoplasia, renal or hepatic failure, hereditary thrombocytopenia, hepatitis B (HBV) or hepatitis C virus (HCV) infection, and excess alcohol consumption.ResultsThe study sample featured a female predominance (67%, N = 60), age range 18–64 years, and 40% prevalence of NAFLD, in accordance with the fibroscan-measured controlled attenuation parameter (CAP) threshold value above 302 dB/m. Males were slightly more frequently affected by NAFLD (51.4% vs. 48.6%, p = 0.01). Insulin levels, insulin resistance (quantified by HOMA-IR), diastolic blood pressure, BMI, visceral adipose tissue (VAT), and waist circumference were significantly higher in the NAFLD subset compared to their counterparts (p < 0.01, p < 0.01, p = 0.05, p < 0.01, p < 0.01, p < 0.01, respectively). Uric acid (p < 0.01) also showed a positive trend in the NAFLD group. Other liver steatosis parameters, measured by stiffness (p < 0.01), fatty liver index (FLI) (p < 0.01) and FibroScan-AST (FAST) (p < 0.01), were also significantly greater in the NAFLD group. In three nested linear regression models built to assess associations between CAP values and serum uric acid levels, a single unit increase in uricemia indicated a CAP increase by 14 dB/m, after adjusting for confounders (coefficient: 14.07, 95% CI 0.6–27.54).ConclusionsClinical-metabolic screening for NAFLD cannot ignore uricemia, especially in patients with obesity.

Abstract
Background Hyperuricemia is a state in which the serum levels of uric acid (UA) are elevated. This study was to determine the roles of rosuvastatin in fasting blood glucose (FGB) and insulin levels in hyperuricemic rats. Methods Thirty-six Sprague-Dawley (SD) rats were randomized divided into the control, model and rosuvastatin groups: the control was given no intervention, the model group was established by administrating yeast extract powder and oxonic acid potassium salt, and the rosuvastatin group was given intravenous administration of rosuvastatin for 28 days in hyperuricemic rats. Serum uric acid (SUA), fasting blood glucose (FBG), fasting blood insulin (FBI), glutamic acid decarboxylase antibody (GADA), oral glucose tolerance test (OGTT) levels, and the ultrastructure of pancreatic β-cells were measured. Also, homeostasis model assessment of insulin resistance (HOMA-IR) scores was computed in three groups. Results Compared to the model group, SUA were decreased, while the FBG, GADA, OGTT and HOMA-IR at week 4 were significantly increased in rosuvastatin group. However, FBI was not significantly changed between three groups. It was also showed that the structure of pancreatic β-cells was damaged and the number of β-cells was changed in hyperuricemic rats while they were aggravated in rosuvastatin group. Conclusion Rosuvastatin has roles in inducing FGB, GADA, OGTT and pancreatic β-cells damage in hyperuricemic rats.
