Abstract
Irritable bowel syndrome (IBS) is a common chronic gastrointestinal disorder of unknown pathological origin that is associated with psychological distress and reduced health-related quality of life (HRQoL). We investigated the effects of stress-management for adults with IBS on typical symptoms, HRQoL and mental health. With predefined criteria (patients: adults with IBS; intervention: stress-management; control: care as usual or waitlist; outcome: patient-relevant; study-type: controlled trials), we registered the study with PROSPERO (168030) and searched the main medical databases. Two researchers independently reviewed the publications and assessed the risk of bias using the Scottish Intercollegiate Guidelines Network checklist. We performed meta-analysis with homogeneous trials of acceptable quality. After screening 6656 publications, ten suitable randomized trials of acceptable (n = 5) or low methodological quality (n = 5) involving 587 patients were identified. Our meta-analysis showed no effect of stress-management on IBS severity 1-2 months after the intervention (Hedges' g = -0.23, 95%-CI = -0.84 to -0.38, I2 = 86.1%), and after 3-12 months (Hedges' g = -0.77, 95%-CI = -1.77 to -0.23, I2 = 93.3%). One trial found a short-term reduction of symptoms, and one trial found symptom relief in the long-term (at 6 months). One of two studies that examined HRQoL found an improvement (after 2 months). One of two studies that examined depression and anxiety found a reduction of these symptoms (after 3 weeks). Stress-management may be beneficial for patients with IBS regarding the short-term reduction of bowel and mental health symptoms, whereas long-term benefits are unclear. Good quality RCTs with more than 6 months follow-up are needed.

Abstract
Objective: Increased prevalence of mild cognitive impairment (MCI) has led to a need for new neuropsychological intervention tools in this population. This meta-analysis aimed to learn about the efficacy of virtual reality (VR)-based neuropsychological interventions in improving cognitive functioning in patients with MCI. Method: This review followed the recommendations of the PRISMA statement, and it was registered in PROSPERO. The studies examined were collected from the PsycINFO, Web of Science, Pubmed/MEDLINE, Embase, Scopus, and Cochrane Library databases. Results: The systematic search yielded 258 articles, of which 13 randomized controlled trials were selected. VR-based neuropsychological interventions had moderate effects on global cognition (g = 0.30; 95% CI = 0.05, 0.56; p = 0.02), small effects on attention (g = 0.27; 95% CI = 0.04, 0.49; p = 0.02), and large effects on executive function (g = 0.60; 95% CI = 0.38, 0.81; p < 0.0001), but non-significant effects on working memory, episodic memory, language, or visuoconstruction. When the length of the intervention was considered, VR-based interventions of 15 or more hours had moderate effects on working memory (g = 0.55; 95% CI = 0.11, 0.99; p = 0.01), and large effects on language (g = 0.60; 95% CI = 0.01, 1.20; p = 0.05) and visuoconstruction (g = 1.13; 95% CI = 0.58, 1.67; p < 0.0001). Conclusions: Results suggest that VR-based interventions are beneficial for improving cognitive functioning in patients with MCI, and allow us to make recommendations that could have implications for clinical decision-making in this population.

Abstract
Asbestos is a mineral that is carcinogenic to humans. Its use has been banned in many occidental countries yet it is still produced in the United States, and materials that contain asbestos remain in many occupational settings and indoor environments. Even though asbestos carcinogenicity is well known, there is scant literature on its specific effects regarding small cell lung cancer (SCLC). We therefore conducted a systematic review and meta-analysis to determine SCLC risk among workers exposed to asbestos. A systematic search of the literature was conducted to identify studies which reported occupational exposure to asbestos and SCLC-related deaths and/or incidence. We identified seven case-control studies that included 3,231 SCLC cases; four studies reported smoking-adjusted risks. A significantly increased risk of SCLC (pooled OR 1.89; 95% CI, 1.25-2.86) was observed on pooling studies on men (six studies) that displayed moderate heterogeneity (I2 = 46.0%). Overall, our synthesis suggests that occupational exposure to asbestos significantly increases the risk of SCLC on men.

Abstract
Imagery rescripting (ImRs) is frequently applied to treat different psychological complaints. We conducted an updated meta-analysis based on randomised controlled trials on the efficacy of ImRs for mental disorders associated with aversive memories. Medline, PsycInfo, and Web of Science were searched up to May 2023. Seventeen trials were included with a total of 908 participants (417 in the ImRs condition), suffering from posttraumatic stress disorder, anxiety disorders, depression, or eating disorders. Random effect models yielded an overall effect of g = 0.68 (95 % CI 0.18 to 1.18; k = 7) compared to passive controls (mostly waitlist). The effect compared to (prolonged) exposure, cognitive restructuring, and EMDR was non-significant (g = -0.01; 95 % CI -0.18 to 0.15; k = 11). Follow-up assessments indicated a long-term treatment effect. Results suggest that ImRs can effectively treat a variety of psychological disorders and produce similar treatment effects as evidence-based interventions. Limitations include the bounded number of included trials for each mental disorder. The meta-analysis was registered on PROSPERO (CRD42020220696) and received no funding.

Abstract
BACKGROUND It has been reported that metformin use may reduce the risk of thyroid cancer, but existing studies have generated inconsistent results. The purpose of this study was to investigate such association between metformin use and the risk of thyroid cancer. METHODS Studies of metformin use for the risk of thyroid cancer were searched in Web of Science, PubMed, Embase, Cochrane Library, China National Knowledge Infrastructure, China Biomedical Database, Wanfang Data, and Chinese Scientific Journals Database (VIP) from the establishment date to December 2022. Newcastle-Ottawa scale is adopted for assessing the methodological quality of included studies, and the inter-study heterogeneity was assessed by using the I-squared statistic. Combined odds ratios (ORs) with the corresponding 95% confidence intervals (CIs) were calculated through either fixed-effects or random-effects model according to the heterogeneity. Besides, subgroup analyses, sensitivity analyses and test for publication bias were conducted. RESULTS Five studies involving 1,713,528 participants were enrolled in the qualitative and quantitative synthesis. The result of the meta-analyses showed that metformin use was associated with a statistically significant lower risk of thyroid cancer (pooled OR = 0.68, 95% CI = 0.50-0.91, P = 0.011). Moreover, in the subgroup analysis, we found that the use of metformin may also aid in the prevention of thyroid cancer in Eastern population (pooled OR = 0.55, 95% CI = 0.35-0.88, P = 0.012) rather than Western population (pooled OR = 0.89, 95% CI = 0.52-1.54, P = 0.685). Sensitivity analysis suggested the results of this meta-analyses were relatively stable. No publication bias was detected. CONCLUSION Metformin use is beneficial for reducing the risk of thyroid cancer. For further investigation, more well-designed studies are still needed to elucidate the association between metformin use and the risk of thyroid cancer.

Abstract
BACKGROUND Sodium-glucose co-transporter 2 (SGLT2) inhibitors have been recommended in the practice guidelines for the treatment of patients with heart failure with reduced ejection fraction; however, their effects among patients with preserved ejection fraction have been debatable. OBJECTIVE We aim to evaluate the SGLT2 inhibitor effect among patients with heart failure with reduced ejection fraction, including DELIVER and EMPEROR-Preserved trials. METHODS We performed a systematic literature search using the PubMed, Embase, Scopus, and Cochrane libraries for relevant articles from inception until August 30th, 2022. Statistical analysis was performed by calculating hazard ratio (HR) using the random effect model with a 95% confidence interval (CI) and probability value (P). Statistical significance was met if 95% CI does not cross numeric "1" and P < .05. RESULTS Six studies with a total of 15,989 total patients were included in the final analysis. The mean age of patients enrolled in SGLT2 inhibitors and placebo was 69.13 and 69.37 years, respectively. The median follow-up duration was 2.24 years. SGLT2 inhibitors reduced composite cardiovascular mortality or first hospitalization for heart failure (HR, 0.80 [95% CI: 0.74-0.87], P < .001, I2 = 0%), heart failure hospitalization (HR, 0.74 [95% CI: 0.67-0.82], P < .001, I2 = 0%) compared with placebo. However, all-cause mortality (HR, 0.97 [95% CI: 0.89-1.06], P = .54, I2 = 0%) and cardiovascular mortality (HR, 0.96 [95% CI: 0.82-1.13), P = .66, I2 = 35.09%] were comparable between both groups. CONCLUSION Our study finding shows that SGLT2 inhibitors significantly reduced the risk of first HF hospitalization or cardiovascular death and HF hospitalization; however, all-cause mortality was comparable between the groups.

Abstract
AIM The study aims to identify whether factors such as time to initiation of laser therapy following scar formation, type of laser used, laser treatment interval and presence of complications influence burn scar outcomes in adults, by meta-analysis of previous studies. METHODS A literature search was conducted in May 2022 in seven databases to select studies on the effects of laser therapy in adult hypertrophic burn scars. The study protocol was registered with PROSPERO (CRD42022347836). RESULTS Eleven studies were included in the meta-analysis, with a total of 491 patients. Laser therapy significantly improved overall VSS/POSAS, vascularity, pliability, pigmentation and scar height of burn scars. Vascularity improvement was greater when laser therapy was performed >12 months (-1.50 [95%CI = -2.58;-0.42], p = 0.01) compared to <12 months after injury (-0.39 [95%CI = -0.68; -0.10], p = 0.01), the same was true for scar height ((-1.36 [95%CI = -2.07; -0.66], p<0.001) vs (-0.56 [95%CI = -0.70; -0.42], p<0.001)). Pulse dye laser (-4.35 [95%CI = -6.83; -1.86], p<0.001) gave a greater reduction in VSS/POSAS scores compared to non-ablative (-1.52 [95%CI = -2.24; -0.83], p<0.001) and ablative lasers (-0.95 [95%CI = -1.31; -0.59], p<0.001). CONCLUSION Efficacy of laser therapy is influenced by the time lapse after injury, the type of laser used and the interval between laser treatments. Significant heterogeneity was observed among studies, suggesting the need to explore other factors that may affect scar outcomes.

Abstract
OBJECTIVES In the face of limited fiscal and technical resources, improvised methods have been used to provide effective and sustainable ventilatory support in low-resource settings to reduce neonatal mortality associated with respiratory complications. This study assessed the use of improvised bubble continuous positive airway pressure (ibCPAP) ventilation among neonates with respiratory complications and determined its effect on neonatal outcomes in low- and middle-income countries (LMICs). CONTENT Hospital-based studies conducted between 2010 and 2020 in LMICs were reviewed. Rayyan® software for systematic review was used for screening and article selection. We used Stata® Statacorp Texas USA software to estimate pooled prevalence, proportion estimates, weighted mean differences and 95% Confidence Interval (CI), using the random effects model. SUMMARY A total of 193 articles were generated and 125 were reviewed. Thirteen articles with 806 neonates on ibCPAP ventilation were included. The pooled prevalence of ibCPAP use was 7.0% (95% CI: 3.0%-13.0%). There was a significant difference in mean oxygen saturation before and after ibCPAP use (-1.34% [95% CI: -1.65% to -1.02%, p<0.01). The duration of oxygen requirement among neonates on ibCPAP was 6.5 hours less than controls (0.27 days [95%CI: -0.49 to -0.05, p<0.01). OUTLOOK IbCPAP had no effect on the respiratory rate, duration of admission, mortality and survival. IbCPAP use in LMIC hospitals is low and its use improved oxygen saturation and duration on oxygen among the neonates, but had no impact on length of stay, respiratory rate, mortality or survival.

Abstract
BACKGROUND Diligent fluid management is an instrumental part of Enhanced Recovery After Surgery. However, the effect of a ward regimen to limit intravenous fluid administration on outcome remains unclear. We performed a meta-analysis investigating the effect of a restrictive versus a conventional fluid regimen on complications in patients after non-cardiac surgery in the postoperative period on the clinical ward. STUDY DESIGN We performed a systematic search in MEDLINE, Embase, Cochrane Library, and CINAHL databases, from the start of indexing until June 2022, with constraints for English language and adult human study participants. Data were combined using classic methods of meta-analyses and were expressed as weighted pooled risk ratio (RR) or odds ratio (OR) with 95% confidence interval (CI). Quality assessment and risk of bias analyses was performed according to PRISMA guidelines. RESULTS Seven records, three randomized controlled trials, and four non-randomized studies were included with a total of 883 patients. A restrictive fluid regimen was associated with a reduction in overall complication rate in the RCTs (RR 0.46, 95% CI 0.23 to 0.95; P < .03; I2 = 35%). This reduction in overall complication rate was not consistent in the non-randomized studies (RR 0.74, 95% CI 0.53 to 1.03; P 0.07; I2 = 45%). No significant association was found for mortality using a restrictive fluid regimen (RCTs OR 0.51, 95% CI 0.05 to 4.90; P = 0.56; I2 = 0%, non-randomized studies OR 0.30, 95% CI 0.06 to 1.46; P = 0.14; I2 = 0%). A restrictive fluid regimen is significantly associated with a reduction in postoperative length of stay in the non-randomized studies (MD - 1.81 days, 95% CI - 3.27 to - 0.35; P = 0.01; I2 = 0%) but not in the RCTs (MD 0.60 days, 95% CI - 0.75 to 1.95; P = 0.38). Risk of bias was moderate to high. Methodological quality was very low to moderate. CONCLUSION This meta-analysis suggests restrictive fluid therapy on the ward may be associated with an effect on postoperative complication rate. However, the quality of evidence was moderate to low, the sample size was small, and the data came from both RCTs and non-randomized studies.

Abstract
BACKGROUND The single-molecule array assay (SIMOA)-based detection of neurofilament light (NFL) chain could be useful in diagnosing mild cognitive impairment (MCI) and Alzheimer's disease (AD). This meta-analysis aimed to evaluate the circulating concentration of NFL in AD and MCI patients compared with healthy controls using the SIMOA technique. METHODS To this end, Google Scholar, PubMed, Scopus, Web of Science, and the reference lists of relevant articles were systematically searched for studies reporting serum NFL chain levels in healthy controls, MCI, and AD patients. Appropriate statistical methods were employed to achieve the study purpose. RESULTS Fifteen eligible studies including 3086 patients were pooled out of a total of 347 publications. Fixed effect model analysis showed that NFL chain level was significantly higher in the serum of patients with MCI (0.361 SMD, 95% CI, 0.286-0.435, p = 0.000, I2 = 49.179) and AD (0.808 SMD, 95% CI, 0.727-0.888, p = 0.000, I2 = 39.433) compared with healthy individuals. The analysis also showed that the NFL chain levels in plasma were significantly different between patients with MCI and AD (0.436 SMD, 95% CI, 0.359-0.513, p = 0.000, I2 = 37.44). The overall heterogeneity of the studies was modest. CONCLUSIONS This study highlights the potential of serum NFL chain detected using SIMOA in differentiating MCI, AD, and healthy controls.

Abstract
INTRODUCTION Post-traumatic headache secondary to mild traumatic brain injury in patients has become an important factor in their prognosis. Due to the lack of effective pharmacological treatments, non-pharmacological interventions such as acupuncture are considered to have greater potential. However, the efficacy and safety of acupuncture treatment have not been clearly demonstrated. The purpose of this meta-analysis protocol is to investigate the effectiveness and safety of acupuncture in the treatment of headache secondary to mild traumatic brain injury. METHODS AND ANALYSIS Seven English and Chinese databases will be selected and searched according to their respective search methods, spanning the period from database creation to April 2022, and the languages will be limited to English and Chinese. Only randomized controlled trials will be included. Study selection, data collection, and risk of bias control will be performed by two independent investigators. Any disagreements will be referred to a third independent investigator for decision and documentation. Revman software will be used to complete our meta-analysis, and risk of bias assessment, subgroup analysis, and sensitivity analysis will be performed to correct the results. Finally we will assess the reliability of our final results using the Recommended Guidelines Development Tool for Assessment. ETHICS AND DISSEMINATION All data for this study will be obtained from published journals, so no ethical review will be required. The completed review will be published in a peer-reviewed journal and the findings will be further disseminated through presentation at an appropriate forum or conference.

Abstract
BACKGROUND Benzene, toluene, ethylbenzene, and xylenes, collectively known as BTEX, are hazardous chemical mixtures, and their neurological health effects have not been thoroughly evaluated. We examined the association between BTEX exposure and neurological hospital admissions. METHODS This was a multicity time-series study conducted in five major Taiwanese cities. Daily hospital admission records for diseases of the nervous system from January 1, 2016, to December 31, 2017, were collected from the National Health Insurance Research Database. Ambient BTEX and criteria pollutant concentrations and weather factors were collected from Photochemical Assessment Monitoring Stations. We applied a Poisson generalized additive model (GAM) and weighted quantile sum regression to calculate city-specific effect estimates for BTEX and conducted a random-effects meta-analysis to pool estimates. RESULTS We recorded 68 neurological hospitalizations per day during the study period. The daily mean BTEX mixture concentrations were 22.5 µg/m3, ranging from 18.3 µg/m3 in Kaohsiung to 27.0 µg/m3 in Taichung, and toluene (13.6 µg/m3) and xylene (5.8 µg/m3) were the dominant chemicals. Neurological hospitalizations increased by an average of 1.6 % (95 % CI: 0.6-2.6 %) for every interquartile range (15.8 µg/m3) increase in BTEX at lag 0 estimated using a GAM model. A quartile increase in the weighted sum of BTEX exposure was associated with a 1.7 % (95 % CI: 0.6-2.8 %) increase in daily neurological hospitalizations. CONCLUSION We found consistent acute adverse effects of BTEX on neurological hospitalizations in Taiwan, with toluene and xylene as the dominant chemicals. These findings aid the development of more targeted public health interventions.

Abstract
Mendelian randomization (MR) is increasingly used for generating estimates of the causal impact of exposures on outcomes. Evidence suggests a causal role of excess adipose tissue (adiposity) on many health outcomes. However, this body of work has not been systematically appraised. We systematically reviewed and meta-analysed results from MR studies investigating the association between adiposity and health outcomes prior to the SARS-CoV-2/COVID-19 pandemic (PROSPERO: CRD42018096684). We searched Medline, EMBASE, and bioRxiv up to February 2019 and obtained data on 2,214 MR analyses from 173 included articles. 29 meta-analyses were conducted using data from 34 articles (including 66 MR analyses) and results not able to be meta-analysed were narratively synthesised. Body mass index (BMI) was the predominant exposure used and was primarily associated with an increase in investigated outcomes; the largest effect in the meta-analyses was observed for the association between BMI and polycystic ovary syndrome (estimates reflect odds ratios (OR) per standard deviation change in each adiposity measure): OR = 2.55; 95% confidence interval (CI) = 1.22-5.33. Only colorectal cancer was investigated with two exposures in the meta-analysis: BMI (OR = 1.18; 95% CI = 1.01-1.37) and waist-hip ratio (WHR; OR = 1.48; 95% CI = 1.08-2.03). Broadly, results were consistent across the meta-analyses and narrative synthesis. Consistent with many observational studies, this work highlights the impact of adiposity across a broad spectrum of health outcomes, enabling targeted follow-up analyses. However, missing and incomplete data mean results should be interpreted with caution.

Abstract
INTRODUCTION Lymph node metastasis of nonfunctioning pancreatic neuroendocrine neoplasms (pNENs) potentially leads to poor survival. Given the contradictory results in the literature regarding factors associated with lymph node metastasis of nonfunctioning pNENs, we conducted a systematic review and meta-analysis to determine the preoperative predictors of lymph node metastasis. Tumor size (>2 cm or >2.5 cm; OR, 5.80 [95% CI, 4.07-8.25]) and pancreatic head location (OR, 1.75 [95% CI, 1.05-2.94]) were significant preoperative predictors of lymph node metastasis. Old age (OR, 1.07 [95% CI, 0.68-1.68]) and male sex (OR, 1.12 [95% CI, 0.74-1.70]) were not significantly associated with lymph node metastasis. CONCLUSIONS A large tumor size and pancreatic head location can be useful for planning optimal treatment in patients with nonfunctioning pNENs.

Abstract
Thyroid hormones play a crucial role in regulating normal development, growth, and metabolic function. However, the controversy surrounding seasonal changes in free triiodothyronine (FT3) levels remains unresolved. Therefore, the aim of this study was to conduct a systematic review and meta-analysis of variations in FT3 levels in relation to seasonal air temperatures in the context of current knowledge about its role in nonshivering thermogenesis. Ten eligible articles with a total of 336,755 participants were included in the meta-analysis. The studies were categorized into two groups based on the air temperature: "Cold winter", where the winter temperature fell below 0 °C, and "Warm winter", where the winter temperature was above 0 °C. The analysis revealed that in cold regions, FT3 levels decreased in winter compared to summer (I2 = 57%, p < 0.001), whereas in warm regions, FT3 levels increased during winter (I2 = 28%, p < 0.001). These findings suggest that seasonal variations in FT3 levels are likely to be influenced by the winter temperature. Considering the important role of the FT3 in the nonshivering thermogenesis process, we assume that this observed pattern is probably related to the differences in use of thyroid hormones in the brown adipose tissue during adaptive thermogenesis, which may depend on intensity of cold exposure.

Abstract
Childhood and adolescence are crucial periods for developing one's awareness of sexuality. Comprehensive Sexuality Education (CSE) during these stages is essential for overall growth, fostering healthy self-concepts, and addressing diverse sexual issues among children and adolescents globally. A meta-analysis was conducted to analyze the effectiveness of CSE programs. A literature search was performed on EMBASE, PubMed, CINAHL, Cochrane Library, and PsycInfo for studies published before 14 June 2023, and based on the Preferred Reporting Items for Systematic Reviews and Meta-Analyses guidelines. We used the Comprehensive Meta-Analysis (CMA, V4) software version 4.0 for the analysis and interpreted the effect sizes according to Cohen's definition. Between 2011 and 2020, 21 studies on CSE were published, with the United States having the most publications (17). Of the 34 studies reviewed, 20 were randomized controlled trials. The primary population for CSE was middle/high school students (15), with the most frequent age range being 10-19 years (26). The overall effect size of CSE was significant (effect size = 1.31, p < 0.001), with cognition (effect size = 5.76, p < 0.001) being the most significant. CSE is an effective educational tool for children and adolescents with a significant impact on variables such as cognition and abstinence. It should be incremental from childhood and adolescence to adulthood.

Abstract
BACKGROUND Persons with disabilities have a right to make their own choices about their bodies, health, and lives, especially regarding their sexual and reproductive health. But they may experience more challenges than women without disabilities in having their reproductive health needs met. So there is an urgent need to scale up disability inclusion in all levels of the health system including family planning. Therefore, the objective of this study was to estimate the pooled prevalence of Family Planning Utilization and Associated Factors among Women with Disabilities in Ethiopia. METHODOLOGY Studies were gathered from Pub Med/MEDLINE (681), Google Scholar (426), African Journal of Online (AJOL) (36), CINAHL (211), HINARI (191), Scopus (86), Science Direct (62), Excerpta Medica database (EMBA, SE) (113), DOAJ (38), Web of Science (26), Google (271), and other organization's websites (2) using a combination of search terms and Boolean operators. The modified Newcastle Ottawa Scale (NOS) for cross-sectional research was used by three authors to independently assess the quality of each study. For statistical analysis, STATATM Version 11 software was employed. For the meta-analysis, the random-effects (Der Simonian and Laird) technique was applied. The heterogeneity test was performed using I-squared (I2) statistics. A one-out sensitivity analysis was performed. RESULT A total of 7 articles with 2787 participants were included in this systematic review and meta-analysis. The pooled prevalence of family planning utilization among Women with Disabilities was 29.6% (95% CI: 22.3, 36.8); I2 = 94.6%). Women who were in marital union (p<0.001) and who had a discussion with their husbands (p = 0.007) were factors significantly associated with the utilization of family planning among women with disabilities. CONCLUSION The finding of this study showed that utilization of family planning among women with disability is relatively lower than the Ethiopian Demographic Health Survey 2019. Therefore, the discussions with the partner and their engagement in decisions to use family planning are critical to increase its use.

Abstract
BACKGROUND Lung cancer patients with coronavirus disease 2019 (COVID-19) infection experience high mortality rates. The study aims to determine the risk factors for mortality in lung cancer patients with COVID-19 infection. MATERIALS AND METHODS Followed the PRISMA reporting guidelines, PubMed, Embase, and Web of Science were systematically searched to February 20, 2023, for studies of lung cancer patients with COVID-19 infection. The main outcome of interest was the risk factor for mortality. We also compared the mortality rate of those patients among different continents. A pooled risk ratio (RR) with 95% CI was presented as the result of this meta-analysis. RESULTS Meta-analysis of 33 studies involving 5018 patients showed that pooled mortality rate of lung cancer in COVID-19 patients was 0.31 (95% CI: 0.25-0.36). Subgroup analysis based on the continents showed significant difference of the mortality rate was observed between Asia and the rest of world (χ2 = 98.96, P < 0.01). Older age (SMD: 0.24, 95% CI: 0.09-0.40, P < 0.01), advanced lung cancer (RR: 1.14, 95% CI: 1.04-1.26, P < 0.01), coexisting comorbidities such as hypertension (RR: 1.17, 95% CI: 1.01-1.35, P = 0.04) and cardiovascular disease (RR: 1.40, 95% CI: 1.03-1.91, P = 0.03) were associated with higher risk of mortality rate in those patients. CONCLUSIONS Findings of this meta-analysis confirms an increased risk of mortality in lung cancer patients with COVID-19 infection, whose risk factors for these patients appear to be exacerbated by older age, advanced-stage lung cancer, and comorbidities such as hypertension and cardiovascular disease.

Abstract
Importance Current rehabilitation guidelines for patients with post-COVID-19 condition (PCC) are primarily based on expert opinions and observational data, and there is an urgent need for evidence-based rehabilitation interventions to support patients with PCC. Objective To synthesize the findings of existing studies that report on physical capacity (including functional exercise capacity, muscle function, dyspnea, and respiratory function) and quality of life outcomes following rehabilitation interventions in patients with PCC. Data Sources A systematic electronic search was performed from January 2020 until February 2023, in MEDLINE, Scopus, CINAHL, and the Clinical Trials Registry. Key terms that were used to identify potentially relevant studies included long-covid, post-covid, sequelae, exercise therapy, rehabilitation, physical activity, physical therapy, and randomized controlled trial. Study Selection This study included randomized clinical trials that compared respiratory training and exercise-based rehabilitation interventions with either placebo, usual care, waiting list, or control in patients with PCC. Data Extraction and Synthesis This study followed the Preferred Reporting Items for Systematic Reviews and Meta-Analyses. A pairwise bayesian random-effects meta-analysis was performed using vague prior distributions. Risk of bias was assessed using the Cochrane risk of bias tool version 2, and the certainty of evidence was evaluated using the GRADE system by 2 independent researchers. Main Outcomes and Measures The primary outcome was functional exercise capacity, measured at the closest postintervention time point by the 6-minute walking test. Secondary outcomes were fatigue, lower limb muscle function, dyspnea, respiratory function, and quality of life. All outcomes were defined a priori. Continuous outcomes were reported as standardized mean differences (SMDs) with 95% credible intervals (CrIs) and binary outcomes were summarized as odds ratios with 95% CrIs. The between-trial heterogeneity was quantified using the between-study variance, τ2, and 95% CrIs. Results Of 1834 identified records, 1193 were screened, and 14 trials (1244 patients; 45% female participants; median [IQR] age, 50 [47 to 56] years) were included in the analyses. Rehabilitation interventions were associated with improvements in functional exercise capacity (SMD, -0.56; 95% CrI, -0.87 to -0.22) with moderate certainty in 7 trials (389 participants). These improvements had a 99% posterior probability of superiority when compared with current standard care. The value of τ2 (0.04; 95% CrI, 0.00 to 0.60) indicated low statistical heterogeneity. However, there was significant uncertainty and imprecision regarding the probability of experiencing exercise-induced adverse events (odds ratio, 1.68; 95% CrI, 0.32 to 9.94). Conclusions and Relevance The findings of this systematic review and meta-analysis suggest that rehabilitation interventions are associated with improvements in functional exercise capacity, dyspnea, and quality of life, with a high probability of improvement compared with the current standard care; the certainty of evidence was moderate for functional exercise capacity and quality of life and low for other outcomes. Given the uncertainty surrounding the safety outcomes, additional trials with enhanced monitoring of adverse events are necessary.

Abstract
Irritable bowel syndrome (IBS) is a common gastrointestinal disease. The efficacy of different probiotics in treating IBS remains controversial. This network meta-analysis aimed to compare and rank the outcome-specific efficacy of different probiotic strains or combinations in adults with IBS. We searched the literature up to June 2023. Randomized controlled trials (RCTs) that evaluated the efficacy of probiotics in IBS were included. A frequentist framework was used to perform this study. In total, 9253 participants from 81 RCTs were included in the study. Four probiotic strains and five mixtures were significantly superior to placebo in improving IBS Symptom Severity Scale, among which Lactobacillus acidophilus DDS-1 ranked first (surface under the cumulative ranking, SUCRA, 92.9%). A mixture containing five probiotics (SUCRA, 100%) ranked first in improving the IBS-Quality of life. Bacillus coagulans MTCC 5856 (SUCRA, 96.9%) and Bacillus coagulans Unique IS2 (SUCRA, 92.6%) were among the most effective probiotics for improving abdominal pain. Three probiotic strains and two mixtures were effective in alleviating abdominal bloating. Four probiotic strains and a mixture were significantly superior to placebo in reducing the bowel movement frequency in diarrhea-predominant IBS (IBS-D). Bacillus coagulans MTCC 5856 (SUCRA, 99.6%) and Saccharomyces cerevisiae CNCM I-3856 (SUCRA, 89.7%) were among the most effective probiotics for improving the Bristol stool form scale of IBS-D. Only some probiotics are effective for particular outcomes in IBS patients. This study provided the first ranking of outcome-specific efficacy of different probiotic strains and combinations in IBS. Further studies are needed to confirm these results.

Abstract
PURPOSE Despite the evidence of a high rate of unintended pregnancy, there remains limited information about the prevalence and experiences of abortion among female sex workers (FSWs). In response, we aimed to summarize the available evidence on abortion among FSWs. METHODS We searched Medline, Embase, PsycINFO, CINAHL, Scopus, and Web of Science from inception to January 29, 2023 . We pooled data from the included studies using random-effects meta-analyses. We also grouped countries for the legality of elective abortion stratified by the United Nations database on abortion laws and policies. RESULTS We identified 60 eligible studies from 2031 potentially eligible records. The pooled lifetime prevalence of at least one and multiple induced abortions was 37.7% (95% confidence interval, 31.8-43.7) and 21.7% (14.9-29.2), respectively. Among FSWs recruited in countries where elective abortion is illegal, at least one induced abortion prevalence was 35.1% (28.1-42.4), and multiple induced abortion prevalence was 23.1% (12.4-35.9). In countries where elective abortion is legal, at least one induced abortion prevalence was 44.6% (34.8-54.6), and multiple induced abortion prevalence was 19.9% (11.9-29.3). Among FSWs experiencing abortion, self-managed abortion prevalence was estimated at 32.8% (23.6-42.7) overall, 42.8% (37.2-48.5) for countries where elective abortion is illegal, and 15.6% (3.9-32.7) for countries that legally allow elective abortion. CONCLUSIONS Induced abortion is prevalent among FSWs, highlighting the need for interventions to increase access to effective contraception and safe abortion care. While induced abortion prevalence did not significantly differ across the legal grounds for abortion, self-managed abortion prevalence was higher in countries where elective abortion was illegal, highlighting the urgent need for accessible abortion services for FSWs in criminalized settings. Moving forward necessitates implementing and evaluating culturally acceptable models of safe abortion and post-abortion care for FSWs to increase access to the full spectrum of sexual and reproductive health services.

Abstract
BACKGROUND Cognitive decline is one of the most widespread chronic complications of diabetes, which occurs in more than half of the patients with type 2 diabetes (T2DM). Emerging evidences have suggested that glucose variability (GV) is associated with the pathogenesis of diabetic complications. However, the influence of acute GV on cognitive dysfunction in T2DM is still controversial. The aim of the study was to evaluate the association between acute GV and cognitive defect in T2DM, and provide a most recent and comprehensive summary of the evidences in this research field. METHODS PubMed, Cochrane library, EMBASE, Web of science, Sinomed, China National Knowledge Infrastructure (CNKI), and Wanfang were searched for articles that reported on the association between acute GV and cognitive impairment in T2DM. RESULTS 9 eligible studies were included, with a total of 1263 patients with T2DM involved. Results showed that summary Fisher's z value was -0.23 [95%CI (-0.39, -0.06)], suggesting statistical significance (P = 0.006). Summary r value was -0.22 [95%CI (-0.37, -0.06)]. A lower cognitive performance was found in the subjects with greater glucose variation, which has statistical significance. Mean amplitude of glycemic excursions (MAGE) was associated with a higher risk of poor functional outcomes. Fisher's z value was -0.35 [95%CI (-0.43, -0.25)], indicating statistical significance (P = 0.011). Sensitivity analyses by omitting individual studies showed stability of the results. CONCLUSIONS Overall, higher acute GV is associated with an increased risk of cognitive impairment in patients with T2DM. Further studies should be required to determine whether targeted intervention of reducing acute GV could prevent cognitive decline.

Abstract
Background Functional Family Therapy (FFT) is a short-term family-based intervention for youth with behaviour problems. FFT has been widely implemented in the USA and other high-income countries. It is often described as an evidence-based program with consistent, positive effects. Objectives We aimed to synthesise the best available data to assess the effectiveness of FFT for families of youth with behaviour problems. Search Methods Searches were performed in 2013-2014 and August 2020. We searched 22 bibliographic databases (including PsycINFO, ERIC, MEDLINE, Science Direct, Sociological Abstracts, Social Services Abstracts, World CAT dissertations and theses, and the Web of Science Core Collection), as well as government policy databanks and professional websites. Reference lists of articles were examined, and experts were contacted to search for missing information. Selection Criteria We included randomised controlled trials (RCTs) and quasi-experimental designs (QEDs) with parallel cohorts and statistical controls for between-group differences at baseline. Participants were families of young people aged 11-18 with behaviour problems. FFT programmes were compared with usual services, alternative treatment, and no treatment. There were no publication, geographic, or language restrictions. Data Collection and Analysis Two reviewers independently screened 1039 titles and abstracts, read all available study reports, assessed study eligibility, and extracted data onto structured electronic forms. We assessed risks of bias (ROB) using modified versions of the Cochrane ROB tool and the What Works Clearinghouse standards. Where possible, we used random effects models with inverse variance weights to pool results across studies. We used odds ratios for dichotomous outcomes and standardised mean differences for continuous outcomes. We used Hedges g to adjust for small sample sizes. We assessed the heterogeneity of effects with χ 2 and I 2. We produced separate forest plots for conceptually distinct outcomes and for different endpoints (<9, 9-14, 15-23, and 24-42 months after referral). We grouped studies by study design (RCT or QED), and then assessed differences between these two subgroups of studies with χ 2 tests. We generated robust variance estimates, using correlated effects (CE) models with small sample corrections to synthesise all available outcome data. Exploratory CE analyses assessed potential moderators of effects within these domains. We used GRADE guidelines to assess the certainty of evidence on six primary outcomes at 1 year after referral. Main Results Twenty studies (14 RCTs and 6 QEDs) met our inclusion criteria. Fifteen of these studies provided some valid data for meta-analysis; these studies included 10,980 families in relevant FFT and comparison groups. All included studies had high risks of bias on at least one indicator. Half of the studies had high risks of bias on baseline equivalence, support for intent-to-treat analysis, selective reporting, and conflicts of interest. Fifteen studies had incomplete reporting of outcomes and endpoints. Using the GRADE rubric, we found that the certainty of evidence for FFT was very low for all of our primary outcomes. Using pairwise meta-analysis, we found no evidence of effects of FFT compared with other active treatments on any primary or secondary outcomes. Primary outcomes were: recidivism, out-of-home placement, internalising behaviour problems, external behaviour problems, self-reported delinquency, and drug or alcohol use. Secondary outcomes were: peer relations and prosocial behaviour, youth self esteem, parent symptoms and behaviour, family functioning, school attendance, and school performance. There were few studies in the pairwise meta-analysis (k < 7) and little heterogeneity of effects across studies in most of these analyses. There were few differences between effect estimates obtained in RCTs versus QEDs. More comprehensive CE models showed positive results of FFT in some domains and negative results in others, but these effects were small (standardised mean difference [SMD] <|0.20|) and not significantly different from no effect with one exception: Two studies found positive effects of FFT on youth substance abuse and two studies found null results in this domain, and the overall effect estimate for this outcome was statistically different from zero. Over all outcomes (15 studies and 293 effect sizes), small positive effects were detected (SMD = 0.19, SE = 0.09), but these were not significantly different from zero effect. Prediction intervals showed that future FFT evaluations are likely to produce a wide range of results, including moderate negative effects and strong positive results (-0.37 to 0.75). Authors’ Conclusions Results of 10 RCTs and five QEDs show that FFT does not produce consistent benefits or harms for youth with behavioural problems and their families. The positive or negative direction of results is inconsistent within and across studies. Most outcomes are not fully reported, the quality of available evidence is suboptimal, and the certainty of this evidence is very low. Overall estimates of effects of FFT may be inflated, due to selective reporting and publication biases.

Abstract
PRCIS Repeat trabeculectomy is associated with similar postoperative intraocular pressure (IOP), a lower complication rate, and a lower need for medications when compared with Ahmed valve implantation (AVI) when performed after initially failed trabeculectomy. OBJECTIVE The goal of this study was to compare the efficacy of repeat trabeculectomies and AVI after an initial failed trabeculectomy. METHODS All studies that investigated the postoperative success of patients who underwent AVI or repeat trabeculectomy with mitomycin- C after a prior failed trabeculectomy with mitomycin- C found in PubMed, Cochrane Library, Scopus, and CINAHL were included. Mean preoperative and postoperative IOP, proportions of complete and qualified successes, and proportions of complications were extracted from each study. Meta-analyses were performed to compare the differences between the two surgical approaches. Methods of measuring complete and qualified success were too heterogeneous among the included studies to allow for meta-analysis. RESULTS The literature search yielded 1305 studies, and 14 studies were included in the final analysis. Mean IOP was not significantly different between the two groups preoperatively and then after 1, 2, and 3 years. Mean number of medications between the two groups was similar preoperatively. After 1 and 2 years, the mean amount of glaucoma medications in the AVI group was approximately twice that of the trabeculectomy group; however, this relationship was only significant at 1 year of follow-up ( P = 0.042). In addition, the cumulative proportion of overall and sight-threatening complications was significantly higher in the AVI group. CONCLUSION Repeat trabeculectomy with mitomycin- C and AVI may both be considered after failed primary trabeculectomy. However, our analysis suggests that repeat trabeculectomy may be the preferred method as it provides similar efficacy with fewer disadvantages.

Abstract
Ischemia at the anastomotic site is thought to be a protagonist in the development of anastomosis-related complications while different strategies to overcome this problem have been reported. Gastric ischemic conditioning (GIC) prior to esophagectomy has been described with this intent. Evaluate the effect of GIC on anastomotic complications after esophagectomy. Scopus, Web of Science, MEDLINE, and PubMed were investigated up to March 31st, 2023. We considered articles that appraised short-term outcomes after GIC vs. no GIC in patients undergoing esophagectomy. Anastomotic leak (AL), anastomotic stricture (AS), and gastric conduit necrosis (GCN) were primary outcomes. Risk ratio (RR) and standardized mean difference (SMD) were used as pooled effect size measures, whereas 95% confidence intervals (95% CIs) were used to calculate related inference. Fourteen studies (1760 patients) were included. Of those, 732 (41.6%) underwent GIC, while 1028 (58.4%) underwent one-step esophagectomy. Compared with no GIC, GIC was related to a reduced RR for AL (R RR = 0.63; 95% CI 0.47-0.86; p < 0.01) and AS (RR = 0.51; 95% CI 0.29-0.91; p = 0.02), whereas no differences were found for GCN (RR = 0.56; 95% CI 0.19-1.61; p = 0.28). Postoperative pneumonia (RR = 1.09; p = 0.99), overall complications (RR = 0.87; p = 0.19), operative time (SMD - 0.58; p = 0.07), hospital stay (SMD 0.66; p = 0.09), and 30-day mortality (RR = 0.69; p = 0.22) were comparable. GIC prior to esophagectomy seems associated with a reduced risk for AL and AS. Further studies are necessary to identify the subset of patients who can benefit from this procedure, the optimal technique, and the timing of GIC prior to esophagectomy.

Abstract
BACKGROUND The aim of the study was to explore the efficacy and safety of immune checkpoint inhibitor (ICI) rechallenge in patients with non-small cell lung cancer (NSCLC). METHODS Studies that enrolled NSCLC patients treated with two lines of ICIs were included using four databases. The initial line (1L-) and subsequent lines (2L-) of ICIs were defined as 1L-ICI and 2L-ICI, respectively. RESULTS A total of 17 studies involving 2100 patients were included. The pooled objective response rate (ORR), disease control rate (DCR), median progression-free survival (mPFS), and median overall survival (mOS) for 2L-ICIs were 10%, 50%, 3.0 months, and 13.1 months, respectively. The 2L-ICI discontinuation rates caused by toxicities ranged from 0% to 23.5%. Original data were extracted from six studies, covering 89 patients. Patients in whom 1L-ICIs were discontinued following clinical decision (the mPFS of 2L-ICIs was not reach) achieved a more prolonged mPFS of 2L-ICIs than those due to toxicity (5.2 months) and progressive disease (2.1 months) (p < 0.0001). Patients' 1L-PFS for more than 2-years had preferable 2L-ORR (35.0% vs. 9.8%, p = 0.03), 2L-DCR (85.0% vs. 49.0%, p = 0.007), and 2L-mPFS (12.4 vs. 3.0 months, p < 0.0001) than those less than 1-year. Patients administered the same drugs achieved a significantly prolonged mPFS compared with the remaining patients (5.4 vs. 2.3 months, p = 0.0004), and those who did not accept antitumor treatments during the intervals of two lines of ICIs achieved a prolonged mPFS compared to those patients who did accept treatments (7.6 vs. 1.9 months, p < 0.0001). CONCLUSIONS ICI rechallenge is a useful therapeutic strategy for NSCLC patients, especially suitable for those who achieve long-term tumor remission for more than 2-years under 1L-ICIs.

Abstract
Publication bias is a major concern in conducting systematic reviews and meta-analyses. Various sensitivity analysis or bias-correction methods have been developed based on selection models, and they have some advantages over the widely used trim-and-fill bias-correction method. However, likelihood methods based on selection models may have difficulty in obtaining precise estimates and reasonable confidence intervals, or require a rather complicated sensitivity analysis process. Herein, we develop a simple publication bias adjustment method by utilizing the information on conducted but still unpublished trials from clinical trial registries. We introduce an estimating equation for parameter estimation in the selection function by regarding the publication bias issue as a missing data problem under the missing not at random assumption. With the estimated selection function, we introduce the inverse probability weighting (IPW) method to estimate the overall mean across studies. Furthermore, the IPW versions of heterogeneity measures such as the between-study variance and the I2 measure are proposed. We propose methods to construct confidence intervals based on asymptotic normal approximation as well as on parametric bootstrap. Through numerical experiments, we observed that the estimators successfully eliminated bias, and the confidence intervals had empirical coverage probabilities close to the nominal level. Abstract
Metabolomics holds great promise for uncovering insights around biological processes impacting disease in human epidemiological studies. Metabolites can be measured across biological samples, including plasma, serum, saliva, urine, stool, and whole organs and tissues, offering a means to characterize metabolic processes relevant to disease etiology and traits of interest. Metabolomic epidemiology studies face unique challenges, such as identifying metabolites from targeted and untargeted assays, defining standards for quality control, harmonizing results across platforms that often capture different metabolites, and developing statistical methods for high-dimensional and correlated metabolomic data. In this review, we introduce metabolomic epidemiology to the broader scientific community, discuss opportunities and challenges presented by these studies, and highlight emerging innovations that hold promise to uncover new biological insights.

Abstract
Meta-analysis has become commonplace within sport and exercise science for synthesising and summarising empirical studies. However, most research in the field focuses upon mean effects, particularly the effects of interventions to improve outcomes such as fitness or performance. It is thought that individual responses to interventions vary considerably. Hence, interest has increased in exploring precision or personalised exercise approaches. Not only is the mean often affected by interventions, but variation may also be impacted. Exploration of variation in studies such as randomised controlled trials (RCTs) can yield insight into interindividual heterogeneity in response to interventions and help determine generalisability of effects. Yet, larger samples sizes than those used for typical mean effects are required when probing variation. Thus, in a field with small samples such as sport and exercise science, exploration of variation through a meta-analytic framework is appealing. Despite the value of embracing and exploring variation alongside mean effects in sport and exercise science, it is rarely applied to research synthesis through meta-analysis. We introduce and evaluate different effect size calculations along with models for meta-analysis of variation using relatable examples from resistance training RCTs.

Abstract
Although numerous studies have examined the effects of internet-delivered cognitive behavioral therapy (iCBT) for depression and anxiety on quality of life, no meta-analysis has yet been conducted to integrate the results of these studies. We conducted systematic searches in PubMed, Cochrane, and PsycInfo, which included terms for treatment type, modality of delivery, condition, and main outcome. We included studies that met the following inclusion criteria: (a) randomized controlled trials, (b) patients allocated to some form of the control condition, (c) patients receiving some type of treatment of anxiety and/or depression involving Internet-delivered Cognitive Behavioral Therapy, (d) use of a validated outcome measure assessing the level of quality of life, (e) conducted with adult participants diagnosed with anxiety disorder and/or unipolar depression, (f) papers written in English. We analyzed 40 randomized controlled trials with a total of 4289 participants that met inclusion criteria. The pooled between-group effect size for the quality of life overall score was small (g = 0.35, 95 % CI: 0.26-0.44, p = .0001), favoring iCBT over the control conditions. Regarding the distinct quality of life domains measured by the World Health Organization Quality of Life Assessment, a statistically significant difference between iCBT and control conditions was found only for the physical health domain (g = 0.56, 95 % CI: 0.06-1.07, p = .029), in favor of iCBT. In both cases, heterogeneity was moderate. While the effect on the quality of life is small (the overall quality of life score) to moderate (the physical health domain score), we conclude that iCBT for depression and anxiety may be a promising approach for improving the quality of life of patients.

Abstract
Neural adaptations to resistance training (RT) and their correlation with muscle strength remain partially understood. We conducted a systematic review and multivariate meta-analysis to examine the effects of metronome-paced (MP), self-paced (SP), and isometric (IM) training on M1 and corticospinal pathway activity. Following MP RT, a significant increase in corticospinal excitability was observed, correlating with increased strength. Conversely, no significant relationship was found after SP or IM training. RT also reduced the duration of the cortical silent period, but this change did not predict strength changes and was not specific to any training modality. No significant effects were found for short-interval intracortical inhibition. Our findings suggest that changes in corticospinal excitability may contribute to strength gains after RT. Furthermore, the relationship between these adaptations and strength appears dependent on the type of training performed.

Abstract
OBJECTIVE This meta-analysis aimed to investigate the effects and safety of enhanced recovery after surgery (ERAS) for the management of pediatric colorectal surgery. METHODS We retrieved relevant studies from PubMed, EMBASE, the Cochrane Library, and China National Knowledgement Infrastructure (CNKI) from its inception until 20 May 2022. Meta-analysis was performed using RevMan 5.4, and power analysis was calculated using G∗Power 3.1. RESULTS Ten studies involving 1298 patients were included for meta-analysis. Meta-analysis suggested that ERAS protocol significantly lessened intraoperative fluids (mean difference [MD], -3.11; 95% confidence interval, -4.99 to -1.22) and postoperative opioid usage (MD, -0.58; 95% CI, -1.08 to -0.26), shortened time to bowel return (MD, -12.02; 95% CI, -20.03 to -4.02), first enteral nutrition (MD, -20.88; 95% CI, -28.34 to -13.42) and oral intake (MD, -1.40; 95% CI, -1.96 to -0.84), lowered readmission rate in 30 days (relative risk [RR], 0.61, 95% CI, 0.41 to 0.90), shortened length of hospital stay (MD, -1.50; 95% CI, -1.25 to -1.09), and reduced in-hospital costs (MD, -0.26; 95% CI, -0.34 to -0.18); however, there was a comparable rate of postoperative complications between the two groups. Sensitivity analysis significantly changed the result of the readmission rate in 30 days. The statistical power of all outcomes ranged from 26.84% to 99.44%. CONCLUSIONS Our findings demonstrate the beneficial role of the ERAS protocol in accelerating rehabilitation, shortening the length of hospital stay, and decreasing in-hospital costs among pediatric patients undergoing colorectal surgery. Abstract
Background The number of randomized controlled trials using auricular stimulation (AS) such as transauricular vagus nerve stimulation, or other auricular electrostimulation or auricular acupuncture or acupressure, in experimental and clinical settings, has increased markedly over the last three decades. This systematic review focusses on cardiovascular effects of auricular stimulation. Methods and analysis The following databases were searched: MEDLINE (PubMed), EMBASE, Cochrane Central Register of Controlled Trials (CENTRAL), ISI Web of Science, and Scopus Database. RCTs were reviewed that had been published in English and European languages. Data collection and analysis was conducted by two reviewers independently. Quality and risk assessment of included studies was performed and the meta-analysis of the effect of the most frequently assessed biomarkers. Results Altogether, 78 trials were included. 38 studies assessed heart rate (HR), 19 studies analyzed heart rate variability (HRV), 31 studies analyzed blood pressure (BP) and 7 studies were identified that measured oxygen saturation (O2), 2 studies on baroreflex sensitivity and 2 studies on skin conductance were evaluated in this review. 26 studies contained continuous data and were eligible for meta-analysis, 50 trials reported non continuous data and were evaluated descriptively. The overall quality of the studies was moderate to low. AS leads to a significant reduction of HR, the changes though were not considered an adverse reaction. Furthermore, when looking at HRV, AS was able to reduce the LF/HF ratio significantly compared to control procedures. No other cardiovascular parameters (blood pressure, oxygen saturation, baroreflex sensitivity) were changed significantly. AS produced only minor side effects in all trials. Conclusion AS can lead to clinically safe reduction of HR and changes in the LF/HF ratio of the HRV, which is presumably via an increase in vagal activity. More research is needed to clarify whether AS can be used to modulate tachycardia or indications with autonomic imbalance. Abstract
OBJECTIVE To evaluate the effectiveness of a therapeutic robot, 'Paro', on anxiety, agitation, depression, apathy, medication use, total sleep time, and sociability among older adults with dementia. DESIGN Systematic review and meta-analysis with narrative synthesis. SETTING AND PARTICIPANTS Older adults aged 60 years and above with any form of dementia in the community, nursing homes, or care facilities. METHODS A three-step search strategy was conducted by two independent reviewers. Nine databases were searched (January 2003 to November 2022). Randomised controlled, crossover, and cluster trials on Paro for older adults with dementia published in English were included. All relevant trials were screened and assessed for risk of bias. Data were extracted using the Cochrane data collection form. The Grading of Recommendations, Assessment, Development, and Evaluation (GRADE) was used to assess the quality of evidence. RESULTS In total, 12 articles involving 1461 participants were included. Results of the meta-analysis showed that Paro had a moderate effect on medication use (SMD: -0.63) and small effect on anxiety (SMD: -0.17), agitation (SMD: -0.27) and depression (SMD: -0.40). However, Paro exhibited negligible effect on total sleep time (SMD: -0.12). The overall quality of evidence for all outcomes were graded as low due to methodological limitations, small sample size, and wide confidence intervals. Narrative synthesis suggested that Paro reduced apathy and increase sociability. CONCLUSION AND IMPLICATIONS Paro could be a beneficial non-pharmacological approach to improve behavioural and psychological symptoms of dementia, reducing medication use, and increasing sociability for older adults with dementia. However, the results should be interpreted with caution as limited studies were available. Additionally, there were a variety of approaches across the studies (i.e. group and individual interventions, facilitated and non-facilitated) which made it difficult to determine which interventional approach is optimal to produce beneficial effects of Paro. Hence, more rigorous studies with a larger sample size are needed to fully understand the mechanism and effectiveness of Paro in older adults with dementia. Abstract
Missing data complicates statistical analyses in multi-site studies, especially when it is not feasible to centrally pool individual-level data across sites. We combined meta-analysis with within-site multiple imputation for one-step estimation of the average causal effect (ACE) of a target population comprised of all individuals from all data-contributing sites within a multi-site distributed data network, without the need for sharing individual-level data to handle missing data. We considered two orders of combination and three choices of weights for meta-analysis, resulting in six approaches. The first three approaches, denoted as RR + metaF, RR + metaR and RR + std, first combined results from imputed data sets within each site using Rubin's rules and then meta-analyzed the combined results across sites using fixed-effect, random-effects and sample-standardization weights, respectively. The last three approaches, denoted as metaF + RR, metaR + RR and std + RR, first meta-analyzed results across sites separately for each imputation and then combined the meta-analysis results using Rubin's rules. Simulation results confirmed very good performance of RR + std and std + RR under various missing completely at random and missing at random settings. A direct application of the inverse-variance weighted meta-analysis based on site-specific ACEs can lead to biased results for the targeted network-wide ACE in the presence of treatment effect heterogeneity by site, demonstrating the need to clearly specify the target population and estimand and properly account for potential site heterogeneity in meta-analyses seeking to draw causal interpretations. An illustration using a large administrative claims database is presented.

Abstract
BACKGROUND Treatment guidelines recommend regular urine drug testing (UDT) for persons initiating buprenorphine for opioid use disorder (OUD). However, little is known about UDT utilization. We describe state variation in UDT utilization and examine demographic, health, and health care utilization factors associated with UDT in Medicaid. METHODS We used Medicaid claims and enrollment data from persons initiating buprenorphine treatment for OUD during 2016-2019 in 9 states (DE, KY, MD, ME, MI, NC, PA, WI, WV). The main outcome was at least 1 UDT within 180 days of buprenorphine initiation, the secondary outcome was at least 3. Logistic regression models included demographics, pre-initiation comorbidities, and health service use. State estimates were pooled using meta-analysis. RESULTS The study cohort included 162,437 Medicaid enrollees initiating buprenorphine. The percent receiving ≥1 UDT varied from 62.1% to 89.8% by state. In the pooled analysis, enrollees with pre-initiation UDT had much higher odds of ≥1 UDT after initiation (aOR=3.83, 3.09-4.73); odds were also higher for enrollees with HIV, HCV, and/or HBV infection (aOR=1.25, 1.05-1.48) or who initiated in later years (2018 v 2016: aOR=1.39, 1.03-1.89; 2019 v 2016: aOR=1.67, 1.24-2.25). The odds of having ≥3 UDT were lower with pre-initiation opioid overdose (aOR=0.79, 0.64-0.96) and higher with pre-initiation UDT (aOR=2.63, 2.13-3.25) or OUD care (aOR=1.35, 1.04-1.74). The direction of associations with demographics varied by state. CONCLUSIONS Rates of UDT increased over time and there was variability among states in UDT rates and demographic predictors of UDT. Pre-initiation conditions, UDT, and OUD care were associated with UDT.

Abstract
BACKGROUND In the last decades, a more prudent and rational use of antimicrobials has been progressively directed towards animal production to reduce antimicrobial selective pressure and antimicrobial resistance (AMR) in microorganisms and safeguard the antimicrobial efficacy of treatments in human medicine. This systematic review evaluated the effectiveness of interventions that have been applied to reduce or improve veterinary antimicrobial usage and aimed at decreasing resistant bacteria in chicken broiler and pig production contexts. METHODS Original articles were identified by searching PubMed™, Scopus™, The Cochrane Library™, and Web of Science™, and grey literature by searching DANS EASY™, WorldCat™ and RCAAP™. Inclusion criteria included: chicken broiler or pig populations (predestined for meat production), interventions intended to reduce/improve antimicrobial use, comparator with standard or no use of antimicrobials, outcomes related to prevalence of resistant bacteria, farm level studies, original data, and analytical observational studies. Data was extracted from eligible studies and meta-analysis using random or fixed effects models was conducted for combinations including type of intervention, bacterial species, production type and animal populations. Models were selected according to heterogeneity between studies. The effectiveness of interventions was assessed using pooled odds ratio of resistance to antimicrobial substances/classes by bacteria for associations between animal populations with and without intervention. RESULTS A total of 46 studies were eligible for review. For chicken broilers, most interventions were identified as antimicrobial restrictions on all non-therapeutic use (46%), complete restriction (27%), and prohibition on antimicrobials used for growth promotion (23%). As for pig populations, restrictions were mainly observed on all non-therapeutic use (37%), complete restriction (37%) and group treatments (22%). For meta-analysis, 21 studies were pooled after assessment of existing combinations. These combinations demonstrated a protective effect for most antimicrobial classes in Escherichia coli, Campylobacter and Enterococcus isolates from samples of chicken broilers as well in Escherichia coli and Campylobacter spp. from samples of pigs, compared to animals raised under conventional production or without intervention. Increased odds of resistance were only observed for cephalosporins in E. coli and broilers raised without antimicrobials, and to fluoroquinolones and quinolones in Campylobacter and pigs raised without antimicrobials, compared to conventional production. CONCLUSIONS Our study indicates that organic production, antimicrobial-free farms, and group treatment restrictions are recommended for AMR reduction, providing information that may support decision-making to tackle AMR and better reporting to improve comparability of results between studies.

Abstract
Cognitive-behavioural therapy for insomnia (CBT-I) is the recommended first-line therapy for adults with chronic insomnia disorder (ID), which is characterized by hyperarousal. Mindfulness-based interventions (MBIs) are protocols aimed at stress reduction based on non-judgmental attention control in the present moment. However, MBIs have been increasingly used without a clear scientific basis. The objective of this analysis was to examine if MBIs could be useful as a component of the CBT-I therapeutic system through a systematic review and meta-analysis of randomized controlled trials (RCTs) and non-randomized studies (NRS) searched in PubMed, PsycINFO, Cochrane and WoS. The Insomnia Severity Index (ISI) was the primary outcome, while the Pittsburgh Sleep Quality Index (PSQI) and a composite sleep variable (CSV) were secondary outcomes. Thirteen articles corresponding to nine studies (three pragmatic RCTs, three explanatory RCTs and three NRS) were included. The omnibus test found that MBIs had a small to medium effect size on ISI nearing signification when comparing active control groups in the pretest-posttest period [Δ = 0.44, p = 0.07], a medium, non-significant, effect size on PSQI [Δ = 0.52, p = 0.18], and a significant though small effect size on CSV [Δ = 0.05, p < 0.01]. No heterogeneity was found. The analysis could not demonstrate that MBIs, combined with CBT-I components in some studies, positively affected ID in the general adult population. This was probably due to the lack of pragmatic designs and suitable measuring instruments. Recommendations are made for designing further studies to address these issues.

Abstract
Despite the reported lack of structural alterations in the amygdala of individuals with attention deficit/hyperactivity disorder (ADHD) in previous meta-analyses, subsequent observational studies produced conflicting results. Through incorporating the updated data from observational studies on structural features of the amygdala in ADHD, the primary goal of this study was to examine the anatomical differences in amygdala between subjects with ADHD and their neurotypical controls. Using the appropriate keyword strings, we searched the PubMed, Embase, and Web of Science databases for English articles from inception to February 2022. Eligibility criteria included observational studies comparing the structure of the amygdala between ADHD subjects and their comparators using magnetic resonance imaging (MRI). Subgroup analyses were conducted focusing on the amygdala side, as well as the use of different scanners and approach to segmentation. The effects of other continuous variables, such as age, intelligence quotient, and male percentage, on amygdala size were also investigated. Of the 5703 participants in 16 eligible studies, 2928 were diagnosed with ADHD. Compared with neurotypical controls, subjects with ADHD had a smaller amygdala surface area (particularly in the left hemisphere) but without a significant difference in volume between the two groups. Subgroup analysis of MRI scanners and different approaches to segmentation showed no statistically significant difference. There was no significant correlation between continuous variables and amygdala size. Our results showed consistent surface morphological alterations of the amygdala, in particular on the left side, in subjects with ADHD. However, the preliminary findings based on the limited data available for analysis warrant future studies for verification.

Abstract
This is the protocol for a Campbell systematic review. The objectives are as follows: The purpose of this review is to synthesize the evidence about the efficacy of problem solving before instruction (PS-I) to promote learning and motivation in students. Specifically, this review is designed to answer the following questions: To what degree does PS-I affect learning and motivation, relative to alternative learning approaches? To what extent is the efficacy of PS-I associated with the use of different design features within it, including the use of group work, contrasting cases, and metacognitive guidance in the initial problem-solving activity, and the use of explanations that build upon students' solutions in the explicit instruction phase? To what extent is the relative efficacy of PS-I associated with the contextual factors of activities used as control, age of students, duration of the interventions, and learning domain? What is the quality of the existent evidence to evaluate these questions in terms of number of studies included and potential biases derived from publication and methodological restrictions?

Abstract
Anal squamous cell carcinoma (ASCC) has a generally acceptable outlook in terms of survival. 18-fluorodeoxyglucose-positron emission tomography/computer tomography (FDG PET-CT) is not recommended for routine monitoring post-ASCC treatment. We examine herein if FDG PET-CT has a use in the prognostic evaluation of patients with ASCC, what FDG PET-CT metrics are of value and if a pre- or post-chemo/radiotherapy scan is more prognostic of outcomes. PubMed, EMBASE and Cochrane Central Registry of Controlled Trials were comprehensively searched until 3 May, 2023. A modified Newcastle Ottawa scale was used to assess for study bias. We present our systematic review alongside pooled hazard ratios (HR) for maximum standardised uptake values (SUV) as a predictor of overall survival (OS) and progression-free survival (PFS). Seven studies including 523 patients were included in our systematic review. Current evidence suggests that SUV maximum and median, metabolic tumour volume, total lesion glycolysis and complete and partial metabolic response may be prognostic when considering overall or progression-free survival (OS)/(PFS) along with local recurrence (LR). Pooled HR from two included studies indicate SUV max is prognostic of OS, HR 1.179, CI (1.039-1.338), P = 0.011 and PFS 1.176, CI (1.076-1.285), P < 0.01. FDG PET-CT may have a role to play in the prognostic evaluation of ASCC patients. Current evidence suggests post-treatment scanning may hold superior prognostic value at this time.

Abstract
Autism presents with significant phenotypic and neuroanatomical heterogeneity, and neuroimaging studies of the thalamus, globus pallidus and striatum in autism have produced inconsistent and contradictory results. These structures are critical mediators of functions known to be atypical in autism, including sensory gating and motor function. We examined both volumetric and fine-grained localized shape differences in autism using a large (n=3145, 1045-1318 after strict quality control), cross-sectional dataset of T1-weighted structural MRI scans from 32 sites, including both males and females (assigned-at-birth). We investigated three potentially important sources of neuroanatomical heterogeneity: sex, age, and intelligence quotient (IQ), using a meta-analytic technique after strict quality control to minimize non-biological sources of variation. We observed no volumetric differences in the thalamus, globus pallidus, or striatum in autism. Rather, we identified a variety of localized shape differences in all three structures. Including age, but not sex or IQ, in the statistical model improved the fit for both the pallidum and striatum, but not for the thalamus. Age-centered shape analysis indicated a variety of age-dependent regional differences. Overall, our findings help confirm that the neurodevelopment of the striatum, globus pallidus and thalamus are atypical in autism, in a subtle location-dependent manner that is not reflected in overall structure volumes, and that is highly non-uniform across the lifespan.

Abstract
BACKGROUND Transgender and gender non-binary (TNB) youth living in the USA report elevated levels of substance use compared with their cisgender counterparts, with previous literature pointing to minority stressors as some of the factors that could facilitate such elevated levels. Yet, substance use and misuse prevalence and associated modifiable factors among TNB youth are not fully known. The current paper details the protocol for a systematic review aimed at (1) identifying substance use and misuse prevalence among TNB youth (ages <25) and related demographic disparities (based on racial, ethnic and gender identity, and sexual orientation), (2) examining factors associated with substance use and misuse among TNB youth and (3) examining protective factors against substance use and misuse among TNB youth. METHODS AND ANALYSIS Systematic searches will be conducted across four databases: PubMed, LGBTQ+ Source, CINAHL and PsycInfo to identify quantitative, qualitative and mixed-methods peer-reviewed research publications. An exhaustive list of keywords and corresponding MeSH (Medical Subject Headings) terms representing the concepts of 'TNB' (the population of interest) and 'substance use and misuse' (outcome) will be employed. Identified records will be initially screened via a review of titles and abstracts. Full text of the remaining records will be reviewed corresponding to the inclusion and exclusion criteria. Extracted data will be synthesised in table and narrative format. A meta-analysis will be considered contingent on the existence of sufficient data. Methodological quality and risk of bias of studies will be assessed. ETHICS AND DISSEMINATION This review does not require approval from the Institutional Review Board as it involves no interactions with human subjects. We will disseminate our findings via peer-reviewed manuscripts and academic conference presentations. PROSPERO REGISTRATION NUMBER CRD42023394985.

Abstract
PURPOSE Sleep disturbance has become a major challenge among adolescents worldwide. Substance use is among the most common factors contributing to sleep disturbance. This systematic review and meta-analysis examined the prevalence and categories of sleep disturbance among adolescents with substance use. METHODS We comprehensively searched for relevant studies published in the following databases from inception to August 2022: CINHAL (via EBSCOhost), PubMed, Scopus, Ovid Medline, Embase, ProQuest, and Web of Science. Data analysis was performed using Comprehensive Meta-Analysis version 3 software. We used a random-effects model to pool prevalence rates with 95% confidence intervals (CIs). Forest plots and p values for the Cochran Q statistic were used to evaluate heterogeneity among studies. Subgroup and meta-regression analyses were performed to compare the groups and identify the sources of heterogeneity. RESULTS We examined 18 studies that reported insomnia, hypersomnolence, sleep-related breathing disorders as sleep disturbances among adolescents with the use of alcohol, smoking, marijuana, and coffee. The total sample was 124,554. The overall prevalence rate of sleep disturbance was 29% (95% CI: 0.201-0.403). Subgroup analysis revealed that the prevalence rates of insomnia and hypersomnolence were higher among alcohol users (31%; 95% CI: 0.100-0.654) and smokers (46%; 95% CI: 0.232-0.700). The study design and method of assessment groups were the significant moderators that showed the source of variation in the included studies. CONCLUSION Sleep disturbance is highly prevalent among adolescents with substance use. Insomnia and hypersomnolence are more prevalent among alcohol users and smokers, respectively. On the basis of our findings, health-care providers can develop effective targeted interventions to reduce substance use, prevent sleep disturbance, and promote healthy sleep habits among adolescents.

Abstract
Objective: The present systematic review and meta-analysis aimed to estimate the prophylactic effect of alpha blockers against postoperative urinary retention (POUR) in orthopaedic patients. Methods: PubMed, Embase, Web of Science and Cochrane Library databases were searched between 1 January 1990 and 1 March 2023. The studies reporting the preventive efficacy of alpha blockers on POUR after orthopaedic procedures were identified. The pooled rates of POUR in the Intervention group (patients receiving alpha blockers) and the Control group (patients not receiving alpha blockers) were estimated and compared. The risk ratios (RRs) were calculated using the random-effects model. Subgroup analysis was performed based on surgical type. Trial sequential analysis (TSA) was conducted to confirm the robustness of pooled results. Results: Seven studies containing 1,607 patients were identified. The rates of POUR were similar between the two groups (Intervention group: 126/748 [16.8%] VS. Control group: 168/859 [19.6%]; RR = 0.75; 95% confidence interval [CI] 0.51 to 1.09; p = 0.130; Heterogeneity: I2 = 67.1%; p = 0.006). No significant difference in the incidence of POUR was observed in either the Arthroplasty subgroup or Spine surgery subgroup. The result of TSA suggested that the total sample size of the existing evidence might be insufficient to draw conclusive results. Administrating alpha blockers was associated with a higher risk of complications (88/651 [13.5%] VS. 56/766 [7.3%]; RR = 1.73; 95% CI 1.27 to 2.37; p = 0.0005; Heterogeneity: I2 = 0%; p = 0.69). Conclusion: Prophylactic alpha blockers do not reduce the risk of POUR in orthopaedic procedures, and administrating these drugs was associated with a higher risk of complications. Abstract
BACKGROUND & AIMS Diabetes may perceive or experience varying degrees of stigma and psychological distress. The association between diabetes-related stigma and psychological distress has been examined in many studies, but no research has used a quantitative synthesis method to investigate the severity of this association and the moderators of the relationship. Thus, we conducted a meta-analysis to quantitatively integrate previous findings to identify the magnitude of the association between stigma and psychological distress among people with diabetes. REVIEW METHODS Following the Preferred Reporting Items for Systematic Reviews and Meta-Analyses (PRISMA) 2020 guidelines, we systematically searched four English academic databases (PubMed, Embase, Web of Science, and PsycINFO) and three Chinese databases (China National Knowledge Infrastructure [CNKI], WANFANG Data, China Science and Technology Journal Database [VIP]). The databases were searched from the inception of each database to the end of March 2023. The pooled correlation coefficient of the association between stigma and psychological distress among people with diabetes was calculated by a random effects model using Stata software (version 17.0), and several moderators that impacted this relationship were identified. RESULTS Eligible studies (N = 19) with a total of 12,777 participants were analysed. The pooled correlation was high between diabetes-related stigma and psychological distress (r = 0.50, 95% CI: [0.43-0.57]). Moreover, the association was moderated by the diabetes stigma measurement tools and diabetes distress measurement tools used. However, the relationship was not moderated by type of diabetes, age, gender, geographical location, or type of stigma. CONCLUSIONS The results of the meta-analysis showed that stigma is strongly related to psychological distress among people with diabetes. Longitudinal or experimental research should be expanded in the future to further identify the causal pathways in the relationship between diabetes stigma and diabetes distress.

Abstract
BACKGROUND Emerging evidence suggests the clinical utility of N terminal pro B type natriuretic peptide (NT-proBNP) in multiple cardiac and pulmonary abnormalities both in adult and pediatric populations. To date, however, there is no consensus regarding its efficacy for the prediction and severity of bronchopulmonary dysplasia in premature neonates. The objective of the present meta-analysis was to determine differences in NT-proBNP among neonates that develop BPD or die from BPD and to evaluate if there is relative information on the diagnostic accuracy of the method. METHODS We conducted a systematic search according to the PRISMA guidelines and looked into Medline (1966-2023), Scopus (2004-2023), Clinicaltrials.gov (2008-2023), EMBASE (1980-2023), Cochrane Central Register of Controlled Trials CENTRAL (1999-2022) and Google Scholar (2004-2023) together with the reference lists from included studies. The potential risk of bias encountered in our study was evaluated using the QUADAS -2 tool. Finally, a total of 9 studies met the eligibility criteria, comprising 1319 newborns, from which 397 developed BPD and 922 were unaffected controls. RESULTS The results retrieved from our meta-analysis showed that newborns suffering from BPD had notably elevated NT-proBNP levels after birth when compared with healthy neonates (SMD 2.57, 95% CI 0.41, 4.72). The summary effect of the AUC meta-analysis showed that NT-proBNP was very accurate in detecting neonates at risk of developing severe BPD or dying from the disease (AUC -0.16, 95% CI -0.23, -0.08). No studies reported data relevant to the sensitivity and/or specificity of the method in diagnosing BPD. CONCLUSION Serum NT-proBNP levels represent a potential future biomarker with great diagnostic validity for the prediction of BPD complicating preterm deliveries. The limited amount of studies included and the significant variations in cutoff values and timing of measurement still restrict the application of NT-proBNP as an established clinical biomarker for BPD. The design of larger prospective studies will provide a more representative number of participants and will address the discrepancies in existing literature.

Abstract
Background Family planning integration in areas where women contact the healthcare system routinely is essential for addressing the high unmet need for family planning among postpartum women and reducing the risk of short interpregnancies. Immediate postpartum family planning (IPPFP) is an integrated service, and opportunities exist for women by providing family planning (FP) counseling and contraceptives as part of care following childbirth within 48 h. Therefore, this review aimed to assess the pooled estimate of immediate postpartum family planning utilization and its associated factors in Ethiopia. Method Electronic databases were used to conduct an extensive search of all published studies, and the digital library was used to identify any unpublished studies. An observational study that reports the prevalence/magnitude and/or associated factors/predictors/determinants of IPPFP utilization in Ethiopia was included. Data were extracted on the Microsoft Excel spreadsheet and analyzed using STATA Version 11. A random-effects model was applied to determine the pooled prevalence of immediate postpartum family planning utilization with a 95% confidence interval (CI). Inverse variance (I2) was used to identify the presence of heterogeneity, and a funnel plot and Egger's test were used to check the presence of publication bias. Subgroup analysis was conducted based on the sample size, region, and year of study to identify the source of heterogeneity. Result Of 15 primary studies, the overall pooled prevalence of immediate postpartum family planning utilization among postpartum women in Ethiopia was 21.04% (95% CI: 13.08, 29.00). Received counseling on FP [OR: 3.59; 95% CI (1.84, 7.01; P < 0.001), having a positive attitude toward FP [OR: 3.2; 95% CI (1.23, 8.35); P = 0.017], and partner support to use FP [OR: 5.85; 95% CI (1.12, 30.54; P = 0.036) were significant predictors of immediate postpartum family planning utilization. Conclusion Generally, IPPFP utilization in Ethiopia was insufficient. Therefore, to enhance the utilization, integrating FP counseling at all maternal service care points, strengthening community awareness to develop a favorable attitude toward family planning, and promoting partner involvement in family planning counseling are essential.
