Abstract
Abnormal inflammatory mediator concentrations during SARS-CoV-2 infection may represent disease severity. We aimed to assess plasma inflammatory mediator concentrations in patients with SARS-CoV-2 in Addis Ababa, Ethiopia. In this study, 260 adults: 126 hospitalized patients with confirmed COVID-19 sorted into severity groups: severe (n=68) and mild or moderate (n=58), and 134 healthy controls were enrolled. We quantified 39 plasma inflammatory mediators using multiplex ELISA. Spearman rank correlation and Mann-Whitney U test were used to identify mechanistically coupled inflammatory mediators and compare disease severity. Compared to healthy controls, patients with COVID-19 had significantly higher levels of interleukins 1α, 2, 6, 7, 8, 10 and 15, C-reactive protein (CRP), serum amyloid A (SAA), intercellular adhesion molecule 1 (ICAM-1), vascular cell adhesion protein 1 (VCAM-1), IFN-γ-inducible protein-10 (IP-10, CXCL10), macrophage inflammatory protein-1 alpha (MIP-1α, CCL3), eotaxin-3 (CCL26), interferon-gamma (IFN-γ), tumor necrosis factor-α (TNF-α), basic fibroblast growth factor (bFGF), placental growth factor (PlGF), and fms-like tyrosine kinase 1 (Flt-1). Patients with severe COVID-19 had higher IL-10 and lower macrophage-derived chemokine (MDC, CCL22) compared to the mild or moderate group (P<0.05). In the receiver operating characteristic curve, SAA, IL-6 and CRP showed strong sensitivity and specificity in predicting the severity and prognosis of COVID-19. Greater age and higher CRP had a significant association with disease severity (P<0.05). Our findings reveal that CRP, SAA, VCAM-1, CXCL10, CCL22 and IL-10 levels are promising biomarkers for COVID-19 disease severity, suggesting that plasma inflammatory mediators could be used as warning indicators of COVID-19 severity, aid in COVID-19 prognosis and treatment.

Abstract
Introduction Methods Results Conclusion Our objective is to determine the factors that influence the length of hospitalization of patients admitted to an intensive care unit. The average length of hospitalization for a critical infection with COVID-19 is 6 days (SD = 7Days). The length of time between the consultation and the onset of symptoms higher than 8 days affects the length of hospitalization. During hospitalization, the use of mechanical ventilation, the use of tocilizumab, having a billateral nosocomial pneumonia are all factors that impact the length of hospitalization.

Abstract
Introduction The hematological manifestations of corona virus disease 2019 (COVID-19) can confound the diagnosis and therapy of other diseases. In this paper, we firstly reported a case of chronic myeloid leukemia (CML) of delayed diagnosis and intolerance to tyrosine kinase inhibitors (TKIs) concurrent with COVID-19. Case Presentation A 56-year-old female was diagnosed as COVID-19 with no obvious leukocytosis [white blood cell (WBC), ≤17 × 109/L] or splenomegaly until ablation of the virus. Bone marrow aspiration was conducted to establish the diagnosis of CML. She accepted an adjusted dosage of imatinib initially and had to suspend it after myelosuppression (day 41). After hematopoietic therapy, imatinib was given again (day 62), but she was still non-tolerant, and nilotinib at 150 mg twice a day was prescribed from day 214. At just about 4 weeks later, nilotinib was discontinued due to myelosuppression. Then, it was reduced to 150 mg per day and was re-initiated (day 349), but she was still non-tolerant to it. Similarly, from day 398, flumatinib at 200 mg per day was tried, but she was non-tolerant. Her white blood cell or platelet count fluctuated markedly with poor therapeutic response. Considering that she was relatively tolerant and responsive to imatinib, the medication was re-initiated at 200 mg and reduced to 100 mg per day. Her follow-up revealed stable WBC and PLT counts. The latest BCR-ABL-210/ABL was decreased to 0.68% at about 6 months after imatinib was re-initiated, which means an improved response. Conclusion The offset effect between CML and SARS-CoV-2 infection was supposed to be the underlying mechanism for the absence of leukocytosis or splenomegaly. The impact of immune network by SARS-CoV-2 preserved and disrupted the patient’s response to TKIs despite the virus’ ablation. We suggest that a continued elevation of basophils may be a useful indicator for CML concurrent with COVID-19, and individualized treatment with adjusted dosage and suitable type of TKIs should be considered to improve the patient’s health outcome.

Abstract
Post-acute sequelae of COVID-19 (PASC) is emerging as global problem with unknown molecular drivers. Using a digital epidemiology approach, we recruited 8,077 individuals to the cohort study for digital health research in Germany (DigiHero) to respond to a basic questionnaire followed by a PASC-focused survey and blood sampling. We report the first 318 participants, the majority thereof after mild infections. Of those, 67.8% report PASC, predominantly consisting of fatigue, dyspnea, and concentration deficit, which persists in 60% over the mean 8-month follow-up period and resolves independently of post-infection vaccination. PASC is not associated with autoantibodies, but with elevated IL-1β, IL-6, and TNF plasma levels, which we confirm in a validation cohort with 333 additional participants and a longer time from infection of 10 months. Blood profiling and single-cell data from early infection suggest the induction of these cytokines in COVID-19 lung pro-inflammatory macrophages creating a self-sustaining feedback loop. Abstract
Patients with Hantavirus-caused epidemic hemorrhagic fever (EHF) are at risk of contracting severe acute respiratory syndrome coronavirus 2 (SARS-CoV-2). However, there is currently no validated EHF/SARS-CoV-2 strategy. Several studies have recently shown Puerarin, a natural product, has potent antiviral properties. The goal of present study was to determine the mechanism of puerarin in patients with EHF/COVID-19. We use network pharmacology and bioinformatics to investigate the possible pharmacological targets, bioactivities, and molecular mechanisms of puerarin in the treatment of patients with EHF/SARS-CoV-2. The study investigated the pathogenesis of COVID-19 and EHF and the signaling pathway impacted by puerarin. 68 common genes linked to puerarin and EHF/SARS-CoV-2 were discovered during the investigation. By using protein-protein interaction (PPI) network, we identified RELA, JUN, NF-B1, NF-B2, and FOS as potential therapeutic targets. The bioactivity and signaling pathways of puerarin have also been demonstrated in the treatment of EHF and COVID-19. According to present study, puerarin could reduce excessive immune responses and inflammation through the NF-B, TNF, and HIF-1 signaling pathways. This study explored the potential therapeutic targets and mechanisms of Puerarin in the treatment of EHF/COVID-19.

Abstract
The global pandemic of the Corona Virus Disease 2019 is a severe threat to human health. This paper aims to investigate the status of mass health self-examination awareness and its influencing factors during the COVID-19 epidemic and establish complete health information to intervene in the prevention and control of the COVID-19 epidemic. The study used a simple random sampling method to survey permanent residents (9761 people) aged 15–70 years in a region of Jiangsu Province, China. The survey collected data using a questionnaire with acceptable reliability and validity. The data were entered into SPSS 26, and the data were analyzed using the chi-square test, ANOVA, and logistic regression. The differences in the status of mass health self-examination during COVID-19 were statistically significant (P < 0.05) in terms of the literacy level of the grassroots population, ease of access to medical care, primary medical and health conditions, the situation of medical examination programs, and the construction of primary health information technology. The establishment of comprehensive and systematic primary health information can effectively assist in raising people's awareness of health self-examination and promoting health behaviors, which is essential for enhancing COVID-19 prevention and intervention.

Abstract
Introduction: Intravenous immunoglobulin (IVIG), which is one of the adjuvant therapy strategies, has been started to be used in critically ill COVID-19 patients due to its anti-inflammatory and immunomodulatory effects.
Material and Method: In our study, it was aimed to evaluate the effect of IVIG used in critically ill COVID-19 patients in the intensive care unit on early laboratory findings and late lung damage. Twenty-two critically ill COVID-19 patients who met the inclusion criteria were included in the study. Laboratory data of the patients who received 0.4 gr/kg/day IVIG for 5 days were analyzed before the treatment and on the 1st and 5th days of the treatment. For the percentage of injured lung areas was evaluated with chest CT.

Abstract
The new coronavirus SARS-CoV-2 is the causative agent of the COVID-19 pandemic, which so far has caused over 6 million deaths in 2 years, despite new vaccines and antiviral medications. Drug repurposing, an approach for the potential application of existing pharmaceutical products to new therapeutic indications, could be an effective strategy to obtain quick answers to medical emergencies. Following a virtual screening campaign on the most relevant viral proteins, we identified the drug raloxifene, a known Selective Estrogen Receptor Modulator (SERM), as a new potential agent to treat mild-to-moderate COVID-19 patients. In this paper we report a comprehensive pharmacological characterization of raloxifene in relevant in vitro models of COVID-19, specifically in Vero E6 and Calu-3 cell lines infected with SARS-CoV-2. A large panel of the most common SARS-CoV-2 variants isolated in Europe, United Kingdom, Brazil, South Africa and India was tested to demonstrate the drug's ability in contrasting the viral cytopathic effect (CPE). Literature data support a beneficial effect by raloxifene against the viral infection due to its ability to interact with viral proteins and activate protective estrogen receptor-mediated mechanisms in the host cells. Mechanistic studies here reported confirm the significant affinity of raloxifene for the Spike protein, as predicted by in silico studies, and show that the drug treatment does not directly affect Spike/ACE2 interaction or viral internalization in infected cell lines. Interestingly, raloxifene can counteract Spike-mediated ADAM17 activation in human pulmonary cells, thus providing new insights on its mechanism of action. A clinical study in mild to moderate COVID-19 patients (NCT05172050) has been recently completed. Our contribution to evaluate raloxifene results on SARS-CoV-2 variants, and the interpretation of the mechanisms of action will be key elements to better understand the trial results, and to design new clinical studies aiming to evaluate the potential development of raloxifene in this indication.

Abstract
COVID-19 caused by SARS-CoV-2 has created formidable damage to public health and market economy. Currently, SARS-CoV-2 variants has exacerbated the transmission from person-to-person. Even after a great deal of investigation on COVID-19, SARS-CoV-2 is still rampaging globally, emphasizing the urgent need to reformulate effective prevention and treatment strategies. Here, we review the latest research progress of COVID-19 and provide distinct perspectives on the mechanism and management of COVID-19. Specially, we highlight the significance of Human Identical Sequences (HIS), hyaluronan, and hymecromone ("Three-H") for the understanding and intervention of COVID-19. Firstly, HIS activate inflammation-related genes to influence COVID-19 progress through NamiRNA-Enhancer network. Accumulation of hyaluronan induced by HIS-mediated HAS2 upregulation is a substantial basis for clinical manifestations of COVID-19, especially in lymphocytopenia and pulmonary ground-glass opacity. Secondly, detection of plasma hyaluronan can be effective for evaluating the progression and severity of COVID-19. Thirdly, spike glycoprotein of SARS-CoV-2 may bind to hyaluronan and further serve as an allergen to stimulate allergic reaction, causing sudden adverse effects after vaccination or the aggravation of COVID-19. Finally, antisense oligonucleotides of HIS or inhibitors of hyaluronan synthesis (hymecromone) or antiallergic agents could be promising therapeutic agents for COVID-19. Collectively, Three-H could hold the key to understand the pathogenic mechanism and create effective therapeutic strategies for COVID-19.

Abstract
BACKGROUND The coronavirus disease 2019 (COVID-19) is spreading around the world. The COVID-19 vaccines may improve concerns about the pandemic. However, the roles of inactivated vaccines in older patients (aged ≥60 years) with infection of Delta variant were less studied. METHODS We classified the older patients with infection of Delta variant into three groups based on the vaccination status: no vaccination (group A, n = 113), one dose of vaccination (group B, n = 46), and two doses of vaccination (group C, n = 22). Two inactivated COVID-19 vaccines (BBIBP-CorV or CoronaVac) were evaluated in this study. The demographic data, laboratory parameters, and clinical severity were recorded. RESULTS A total of 181 older patients with infection of Delta variant were enrolled. 111 (61.3%) patients had one or more co-morbidities. The days of "turn negative" and hospital stay in Group C were lower than those in the other groups (P < 0.05). The incidences of multiple organ dysfunction syndrome (MODS), septic shock, acute respiratory distress syndrome (ARDS), acute kidney injury, and cardiac injury in Group A were higher than those in the other groups (P < 0.05). The MV-free days and ICU-free days during 28 days in Group A were also lower than those in the other groups (P < 0.05). In patients with co-morbidities, vaccinated cases had lower incidences of MODS (P = 0.015), septic shock (P = 0.015), and ARDS (P = 0.008). CONCLUSIONS The inactivated COVID-19 vaccines were effective in improving the clinical severity of older patients with infection of Delta variant.

Abstract
We are going through the greatest global health crisis of the last decades, the coronavirus disease 2019 (COVID‐19) pandemic. It may cause morbidity and mortality in some cases, and there is no therapeutic approach with reproducible and favorable outcomes. As clinical manifestations differ from patient to patient, any report regarding clinical symptoms has been beneficial for early detection and treatment. Due to the immunomodulatory effect of mesenchymal stem cells (MSCs), MSCs‐based therapy has been approved to be one of the therapeutic strategies for COVID‐19 management. For the first time in the literature, we reported generalized lymphadenopathy with fever and no sign of respiratory distress in a 16‐year‐old patient with confirmed COVID‐19 infection as the main clinical signs. We also introduce decidual stromal cells as a potential immunomodulatory treatment for COVID‐19–infected patients.

Abstract
To date, no satisfactory treatment for COVID-19 is available. This review reported few recent updates regarding the drugs (allopathy/traditional medicines) used for the treatment of COVID-19 concerning clinical studies. Content of the article spotlight the contribution of allopathic and Ayurvedic drugs to the scientific basis for utilization as a potential therapy against COVID-19 infection and provide new insights on the integration of allopathy and traditional medicine. It advocated the combination of these two systems of treatment will ascertain their integrations, and there would be a good possibility and scope for developing a model of integration in the management of COVID-19. Provided discussion may help researchers, physicians, and healthcare policymakers to encourage for effective and integrated use of allopathic and Ayurvedic medicines to control the COVID-19 pandemic more effectively.

Abstract
Since the emergence of the disease in late December 2019, numerous studies have been published to date regarding clinical, laboratory and treatment aspects associated with COVID-19. The present study attempts to compare and unify the clinical, para-clinical and therapeutic aspects that have come to light regarding coronavirus disease-19 (COVID 19), mainly in adults. Between April 2020 and September 2021, a comprehensive systematic literature review was performed, which we added to from our own medical experiences. The search was performed on the PubMed, Scopus and Google Scholar databases, comprising studies with analyzable data that were identified alongside studies and documents containing general scientific data. All published studies were written in English, and were from different countries. A 95% confidence interval (CI95) was also calculated for almost each study using the Wilson formula. When compared with preliminary reports between December 2019 and January 2020, the most frequent symptoms were still identified as being fever (68.6%; CI95: 67.5-69.7) and cough (72.7%; CI95: 71.7-73.8). Nevertheless, asymptomatic cases also increased (by 21.4%; CI95: 16.6-27.1). Severe and critical cases accounted for 10.4% (CI95: 9.6-11.1) of all cases. The mean fatality rate was found to be 4% (CI95: 3.6-4.5). The primary co-morbidity found was hypertension (28.9%; CI95: 27-30.8), followed by other underlying cardiovascular diseases (15.4%; CI95: 13.9-16.9) and diabetes (14.5%; CI95: 13.1-16.1). The majority of studies showed lower white blood cell numbers with neutropenia and lymphopenia, and lower platelet levels. The levels of the biomarkers C-reaction protein and erythrocyte sedimentation rate were positive in all studied cases alongside other lab tests, such as examining the D-dimer levels and those of other hepatic, cardiac and renal injury markers. The procalcitonin level was also found to be elevated in many cases, resulting in high usage of antibiotics (83.7%; CI95: 81.2-85.9). Approximately 31.6% (CI95: 29.1-34.1) of the patients required non-invasive ventilation, whereas 9.9% (CI95: 8.1-12.1) of the patients were intubated or placed on extracorporeal membrane oxygenation. The most used antivirals were ribavirin (67.3%; CI95: 63.4-70.9), oseltamivir (52.5%; CI95: 49.4-55.5) and Arbidol™ (34.5%; CI95: 32-37.1). General admittance to the intensive care unit was ~7.2% (CI95: 6.5-7.9) of patients.

Abstract
Background The scientific researches on COVID-19 pandemic topics are headed to an explosion of scientific literature. Despite these global efforts, the efficient treatment of patients is an in-progress challenge. Based on a meta-study of published shreds of evidence about compounds and their botanic sources in the last six decades, a novel multiple-indication herbal compound (Saliravira®) has been developed. Based on the antiviral, anti-inflammatory, and immune-enhancing properties of its ingredients, we hypothesized that Saliravira® has the potential to act as an antiviral agent, accelerate treatment, and reduce undesirable effects of COVID-19. Methods In this randomized, controlled, open-label clinical trial, COVID-19 outpatients were included by RT-PCR test or diagnosis of physicians according to the symptoms. Participants were randomly divided into intervention and control groups to receive Saliravira® package plus routine treatments of COVID-19 or routine treatments of COVID-19 alone, respectively. Saliravira® package includes tablets, nasal-sinuses spray, oral-pharynx spray, and inhaler drops. The treatment was for 10 days and followed up till 23 days after admission. Results On the 8th day, the “mean reduction rates” of viral load of the patients in the intervention group was 50% lower compared to the control group with a p-value < 0.05. The improvement of 10 out of 14 COVID-19 symptoms in the intervention group was significantly accelerated. The mean treatment duration of patients in the intervention group was 4.9 days less than the control group. In addition, no patients in the intervention group were hospitalized compared to 28% of the control group needed to be hospitalized.

Abstract
Purpose Herpes zoster infection, with its considerable burden to individuals and society, remains a challenge around the world. However, to the knowledge of the authors, little bibliometric quantitative or qualitative analysis has been carried out to evaluate herpes zoster research. This study aimed to use a bibliometric analysis to evaluate current publication trends and hotspots on herpes zoster research worldwide, in order to advance research in this field. Methods Relevant publications from January 2012 to December 2021 were collected from the Web of Science Core Collection database. Citespace (V5.8.R3) was used to analyze the research points, including publication countries, institutions and authors, cited author, cited reference and their clustering, and keyword co-occurrence, and burst keyword to acquire research trends and hotspots. Results A total of 9,259 publications were obtained, with a steady increase in the number of annual publications during the decade. Articles were the main type of publication. The United States is the leading country in this research, and the University of Colorado has the highest influence in this field. Oxman is the most representative author, with a main research interest in herpes zoster vaccines. The top five cited authors' publications focused on herpes zoster vaccines, molecular mechanisms, and postherpetic neuralgia. A co-citation map resulted 19 main clusters, and revealed that vaccines, postherpetic neuralgia, treatments, varicella zoster virus and its mechanisms, and epidemiology of herpes zoster were the current research focus after clustering co-cited publications. Human herpesviruses, antiviral prophylaxis, rheumatoid arthritis, recombinant zoster vaccine, varicella vaccination and postherpetic neuralgia were the top clusters after co-occurrence keywords analysis. Moreover, burst keywords detection showed that the subunit vaccine was the new hotspot in the field of herpes zoster. Conclusion This bibliometric study defined the overall prospects in the field of herpes zoster and provided valuable instruction for the ongoing research. The keyword "subunit vaccine" indicated that a vaccine for herpes zoster prevention was the hotspot. Efforts to prevent varicella zoster virus infection will be essential to improve herpes zoster outcomes.

Abstract
Dentists are on the frontline of infection, especially when it comes to respiratory viruses like the new coronavirus. The purpose of this paper is to conduct a scoping review to better understand dentists' risk awareness, awareness of COVID-19 symptoms, preventive measures, and effective methods of COVID-19 infection prevention and management. This paper systematically assesses the published literature on dentistry and COVID-19. Various electronic databases including Ovid MEDLINE, Scopus, Embase, and MEDLINE via PubMed were searched up to 9 September 2021. Overall, 39 papers were included. Almost the entirety of dentists (94.5%) reported awareness of the three most common COVID-19 symptoms, and a risk awareness score of about 90% was shown, while 88.2% of dentists reported adopting preventive measures. More than 50% did not want to treat infected people. While 70.3% of dentists recommended usage of N95 masks, the rate of dentists using them was below 40%. Sufficient awareness of risks during the pandemic was found in dentists. Although they were using preventive measures, there remains upside potential for adopting all recommended measures. Further, the usage of N95 masks is improvable, even though the benefit of wearing them could not be confirmed.

Abstract
Inflammation is a beneficial and physiological process, but there are a number of inflammatory diseases which have detrimental effects on the body. In addition, the drugs used to treat inflammation have toxic side effects when used over a long period of time. Mesenchymal stem cells (MSCs) are pluripotent stem cells that can be isolated from a variety of tissues and can be differentiate into diverse cell types under appropriate conditions. They also exhibit noteworthy anti-inflammatory properties, providing new options for the treatment of inflammatory diseases. The therapeutic potential of MSCs is currently being investigated for various inflammatory diseases, such as kidney injury, lung injury, osteoarthritis (OA), rheumatoid arthritis (RA), and inflammatory bowel disease (IBD). MSCs can perform multiple functions, including immunomodulation, homing, and differentiation, to enable damaged tissues to form a balanced inflammatory and regenerative microenvironment under severe inflammatory conditions. In addition, accumulated evidence indicates that exosomes from extracellular vesicles of MSCs (MSC-Exos) play an extraordinary role, mainly by transferring their components to recipient cells. In this review, we summarize the mechanism and clinical trials of MSCs and MSC-Exos in various inflammatory diseases in detail, with a view to contributing to the treatment of MSCs and MSC-Exos in inflammatory diseases.

Abstract
Background: Although vaccination is underway, antiviral drugs against coronavirus disease 2019 (COVID-19) are lacking. Remdesivir, a nucleoside analog that works by inhibiting the viral RNA-dependent RNA polymerase (RdRp), is the only fully approved antiviral for the treatment of COVID-19. However, it is limited to intravenous use and is usually recommended only for hospitalized patients with severe COVID-19; therefore, oral drugs that can be prescribed even to non-hospitalized patients are required. According to a recent study, 4′-fluoruridine, a nucleoside analog similar to remdesivir, is a promising candidate for COVID-19 oral therapy due to its ability to stall viral RdRp. Methods: We examined the antiviral activity of 4′-fluorouridine and compared it to other drugs currently in development. The current literature on 4′-fluorouridine's antiviral activity against severe acute respiratory syndrome coronavirus 2 (SARS-CoV-2) has been compiled and discussed in this review. Results: The 4'-fluorouridine has antiviral activity against the respiratory syncytial virus, hepatitis C virus, lymphocytic choriomeningitis virus, and other RNA viruses, including SARS-CoV-2. In vitro studies have shown that SARS-CoV-2 is susceptible to 4'-fluorouridine, with the half-maximal effective concentration (EC50) of 0.2 to 0.6 M, and that the 4′-fluorouridine derivative, 4′-fluorouridine-5′-triphosphate, inhibited RdRp via a mechanism distinct from that of the already approved COVID-19 oral drug, molnupiravir. In addition, an in vivo study revealed that SARS-CoV-2 is highly susceptible to 4'-fluorouridine and was effective with a single daily dose versus molnupiravir administered twice daily. Conclusions: Concerns about the genetic effects of molnupiravir may be resolved by the use of 4′-fluorouridine and its derivative, which, unlike molnupiravir, do not alter genetics, but inhibit RdRp instead. Although they are currently considered as strong candidates, further studies are required to determine the antiviral activity of 4′-fluorouridine and its derivative against SARS-CoV-2 and their genetic effects on humans.

Abstract
AIM To present feedback, after applying national and international urodynamic study (UDS) recommendations for safe practice during the COVID-19 pandemic. METHODS We created a checklist to assess the feasibility of performing UDS recommendations for safe practice during the COVID-19 pandemic from the first week of May 2021 to the last week of July 2021. RESULTS One hundred patients were analyzed during the study period. We observed that all preventive recommendations for the steps that precede UDS could be followed in full. However, some guidelines for performing the exam were not feasible in all patients. We have successfully adopted other safety measures for all patients. CONCLUSIONS The COVID-19 pandemic will likely persist for several more years. We believe that continuous improvement, revision, and updating of existing protocols and guidelines for the safe practice of UDS in times of COVID-19, as we propose in this study, should be encouraged.

Abstract
Objetivos: describir las características clínicas, sociodemográficas y la frecuencia de complicaciones maternas y perinatales en mujeres gestantes con diagnóstico confirmado de COVID-19 atendidas en un hospital de alta complejidad en Perú. Materiales y métodos: estudio de cohorte retrospectivo descriptivo. Se incluyeron mujeres con 20 semanas o más de gestación con diagnóstico de infección por COVID-19 atendidas en un hospital de referencia nacional del Seguro Social del Perú entre marzo y diciembre del 2020; se excluyeron mujeres cuya gestación no culminó en la institución participante. Las variables medidas fueron: características sociodemográficas y obstétricas de la gestante, nexo epidemiológico, severidad de la infección por COVID-19, síntomas y datos de laboratorio, morbi-mortalidad materna, presencia de anticuerpos en el recién nacido, peso, adaptación y mortalidad perinatal. El análisis fue descriptivo. El protocolo fue aprobado por el comité de ética en investigación del Instituto de Evaluación de Tecnologías en Salud e Investigación de EsSalud. Resultados: los criterios de inclusión y exclusión fueron cumplidos por 322 mujeres. La población de estudio se caracterizó por ser predominantemente mujeres menores de 35 años, con educación superior. El 95% de las gestantes presentó síntomas leves o imperceptibles. Los síntomas predominantes fueron fiebre (85%), tos (52%) y cefalea (18%); se documentó leucocitosis (31%), linfopenia (24%) y trombocitopenia (5%). Se registraron 2 muertes maternas (0,6%) y 22 (7,2%) defunciones perinatales. El 0,9% de los neonatos exhibieron una prueba reactiva positiva para COVID-19. Conclusiones: durante la gestación, la infección producida por el SARS-CoV-2 suele ser asintomática o leve. En las gestantes con infección moderada y severa se presentaron más frecuentemente complicaciones maternas y perinatales. Se requieren más estudios que analicen el impacto materno fetal de la infección por COVID-19 durante la gestación en la región.

Abstract
Unpredictable outbreaks due to respiratory viral infections emphasize the need for new drug delivery strategies to the entire respiratory tract. As viral attack is not limited to a specific anatomic region, antiviral therapy that targets both the upper and lower respiratory tract would be most effective. This study aimed to formulate tamibarotene, a retinoid derivative previously reported to display broad-spectrum antiviral activity against influenza and severe acute respiratory syndrome coronavirus-2 (SARS-CoV-2), as a novel dual particle size powder formulation that targets both the nasal cavity and the lung by a single route of intranasal administration. Spray freeze drying (SFD) and spray drying (SD) techniques were employed to prepare tamibarotene powder formulations, and cyclodextrin was used as the sole excipient to enhance drug solubility. With the employment of appropriate atomizing nozzles, particles of size above 10 μm and below 5 μm could be produced for nasal and lung deposition, respectively. The aerosol performance of the powder was evaluated using Next Generation Impactor (NGI) coupled with a glass expansion chamber and the powder was dispersed with a nasal powder device. By blending powder of two different particle sizes, a single powder formulation with dual aerosol deposition characteristic in both the nasal and pulmonary regions was produced. The aerosol deposition fractions in the nasal cavity and pulmonary region could be modulated by varying the powder mixing ratio. All dry powder formulations exhibited spherical structures, amorphous characteristics and improved dissolution profile as compared to the unformulated tamibarotene. Overall, a novel dual targeting powder formulation of tamibarotene exhibiting customizable aerosol deposition profile was developed. This exceptional formulation strategy can be adopted to deliver other antimicrobial agents to the upper and lower airways for the prevention and treatment of human respiratory infections.

Abstract
Coronavirus disease 2019 (COVID-19) has gained prominence as a global pandemic. Studies have suggested that systemic alterations persist in a considerable proportion of COVID-19 patients after hospital discharge. We used proteomic and metabolomic approaches to analyze plasma samples obtained from 30 healthy subjects and 54 COVID-19 survivors 6 months after discharge from the hospital, including 30 non-severe and 24 severe patients. Through this analysis, we identified 1019 proteins and 1091 metabolites. The differentially expressed proteins and metabolites were then subjected to Gene Ontology and Kyoto Encyclopedia of Genes and Genomes pathway enrichment analysis. Among the patients evaluated, 41% of COVID-19 survivors reported at least one clinical symptom and 26.5% showed lung imaging abnormalities at 6 months after discharge. Plasma proteomics and metabolomics analysis showed that COVID-19 survivors differed from healthy control subjects in terms of the extracellular matrix, immune response, and hemostasis pathways. COVID-19 survivors also exhibited abnormal lipid metabolism, disordered immune response, and changes in pulmonary fibrosis-related proteins. COVID-19 survivors show persistent proteomic and metabolomic abnormalities 6 months after discharge from the hospital. Hence, the recovery period for COVID-19 survivors may be longer.

Abstract
Objective: Healthcare workers and disaster service workers have been reported to be vulnerable to mental health problems during outbreaks of infectious diseases such as the COVID-19 pandemic. This study aimed to investigate the psychosocial characteristics of disaster service workers in charge of COVID-19-related work and also identify the factors affecting their quality of life. Methods: From June 2020 to June 2021, a survey was conducted of 526 disaster service workers in charge of COVID-19-related work. This included those working in public health care centers (PHC), 119 rescue and emergency medical services (119 REMS), public servants of city hall (PS), and police officers. The Korean version of the Fear of COVID-19 Scale, Patient Health Questionnaire-15, Hospital Anxiety and Depression Scale, Insomnia Severity Index, Connor−Davidson Resilience Scale, and World Health Organization quality of life assessment instrument brief form were used. A one-way ANOVA was conducted, and a stepwise regression analysis was carried out to determine the factors affecting quality of life. Results: Regarding quality of life, 119 REMS (180.64 ± 26.20) scored significantly higher than PHC (165.76 ± 23.73) and PS (163.90 ± 23.60), while police officers (176.87 ± 23.17) scored significantly higher than PS (163.90 ± 23.60) (F = 12.373, p < 0.001). Resilience (β = 0.897, p < 0.01) was the most significant explanatory variable, and together with insomnia (β = 0.154, p < 0.01), depression (β = −0.152, p < 0.01), and COVID-19 anxiety (β = −0.057, p < 0.01) accounted for 91.8% of the explanatory variance with regard to quality of life. Discussion: Quality of life was found to be negatively correlated with insomnia, depression, and COVID-19 anxiety while being positively correlated with resilience. Therefore, active interventions are needed to improve the resilience of disaster service workers.

Abstract
Multiple Sclerosis (MS) is the most common chronic autoimmune disease of the central nervous system, affecting around 2.8 million people worldwide. Patients’ knowledge about COVID-19 infection, and their proper protective actions, may reduce the risk of infection. The aim of this study was to assess the knowledge of patients with MS about SARS-CoV-2, COVID-19 illness, the relationship between MS and COVID-19, willingness to be vaccinated, and the impact of the pandemic on MS care. An original, anonymous, 35-items, self-reported questionnaire was used in both web-based and on-site survey formats. Two-hundred and forty-eight questionnaires were analyzed (mean age 40.8 ± 10.6 years, 77.8% women). Participants reported the use of multiple sources of information, and the most common were websites (77.8%) and television (59.3%). The majority of participants knew the correct symptoms of COVID-19 or transmission routes (94.4%), and accepted the pandemic’s restrictions (96.8%). A total of 93.2% considered SARS-CoV-2 as highly infectious, and 69% thought they were at higher risk of being infected with SARS-CoV-2, mainly because of immunodeficiency (82.7%). Although most of them were afraid of COVID-19 (69.0%), only two-thirds wanted to be vaccinated. Patients who were afraid of COVID-19 had a 3.5-times higher chance to declare willingness for vaccination. A total of 29.8% patients claimed that the COVID-19 pandemic limited access to the healthcare system. This study shows that Polish patients with MS represent a good level of knowledge about COVID-19 disease, and acceptance for public rules, but their willingness for vaccinations is not sufficient. Country-wide educational campaigns should be conducted, particularly on the internet and TV. Restrictions in healthcare facilities should be balanced to secure access for patients with MS.

Abstract
The study of host specificity has important connections to the question about the origin of SARS-CoV-2 in humans which led to the COVID-19 pandemic-an important open question. There are speculations that bats are a possible origin. Likewise, there are many closely related (corona)viruses, such as SARS, which was found to be transmitted through civets. The study of the different hosts which can be potential carriers and transmitters of deadly viruses to humans is crucial to understanding, mitigating, and preventing current and future pandemics. In coronaviruses, the surface (S) protein, or spike protein, is important in determining host specificity, since it is the point of contact between the virus and the host cell membrane. In this paper, we classify the hosts of over five thousand coronaviruses from their spike protein sequences, segregating them into clusters of distinct hosts among birds, bats, camels, swine, humans, and weasels, to name a few. We propose a feature embedding based on the well-known position weight matrix (PWM), which we call PWM2Vec, and we use it to generate feature vectors from the spike protein sequences of these coronaviruses. While our embedding is inspired by the success of PWMs in biological applications, such as determining protein function and identifying transcription factor binding sites, we are the first (to the best of our knowledge) to use PWMs from viral sequences to generate fixed-length feature vector representations, and use them in the context of host classification. The results on real world data show that when using PWM2Vec, machine learning classifiers are able to perform comparably to the baseline models in terms of predictive performance and runtime-in some cases, the performance is better. We also measure the importance of different amino acids using information gain to show the amino acids which are important for predicting the host of a given coronavirus. Finally, we perform some statistical analyses on these results to show that our embedding is more compact than the embeddings of the baseline models.

Abstract
The world is grappling with an unprecedented public health crisis COVID-19 pandemic caused by the novel coronavirus SARS-CoV-2. Due to the high transmission/mortality rates and socioeconomic impacts of the COVID-19, its control is crucial. In the absence of specific treatment, vaccines represent the most efficient way to control and stop the pandemic. Many companies around the world are currently making efforts to develop the vaccine to combat COVID-19. This review outlines key strategies for generating SARS-CoV-2 vaccine candidates, along with the mechanism of action, advantages, and potential limitations of each vaccine. The use of nanomaterials and nanotechnology for COVID-19 vaccines development will also be discussed.

Abstract
Nowadays, severe acute respiratory syndrome coronavirus 2 (SARS-CoV-2) infection has become the main subject of the scientific medical world and all World Organizations, causing millions of deaths worldwide. In this review, we have highlighted the context of the Coronavirus disease 2019 (COVID-19) pandemic, how the virus spreads, the symptoms and complications that may occur, and, especially, the drug treatment of viral infection, with emphasis on monoclonal antibodies. While well-known strains such as Alpha, Beta, Gamma, and, especially, Delta have shown an accelerated transmission among the population, the new Omicron variant (discovered on 24 November 2021) indicates more significant infectiousness and the poor efficacy of monoclonal antibody therapy due to mutations on the spike protein receptor-binding domain. With these discoveries, the experiments began, the first being in silico and in vitro, but these are not enough, and in vivo experiments are needed to see exactly the cause of neutralization of the action of these drugs. Following the documentation of the latest medical and scientific research, it has been concluded that there are many chemical molecules that have the potential to treat SARS-CoV-2 infection, but more detailed clinical trials are needed for their use in therapy. In addition, it is important to consider the structure of the viral strain in the administration of treatment.

Abstract
The SARS-CoV-2 enters the human airways and comes into contact with the mucous membranes lining the mouth, nose, and eyes. The virus enters the healthy cells and uses cell machinery to make several copies of the virus. Critically ill patients infected with SARS-CoV-2 may have damaged lungs, air sacs, lining, and walls. Since COVID-19 causes cytokine storm, it damages the alveolar cells of the lungs and fills them with fluid, making it harder to exchange oxygen and carbon dioxide. The SARS-CoV-2 infection causes a range of complications, including mild to critical breathing difficulties. It has been observed that older people suffering from health conditions like cardiomyopathies, nephropathies, metabolic syndrome, and diabetes instigate severe symptoms. Many people who died due to COVID-19 had impaired metabolic health [IMH], characterized by hypertension, dyslipidemia, and hyperglycemia, i.e., diabetes, cardiovascular system, and renal diseases making their retrieval challenging. Jeopardy stresses for increased mortality from COVID-19 include older age, COPD, ischemic heart disease, diabetes mellitus, and immunosuppression. However, no targeted therapies are available as of now. Almost two-thirds of diagnosed coronavirus patients had cardiovascular diseases and diabetes, out of which 37% were under 60. The NHS audit revealed that with a higher expression of ACE-2 receptors, viral particles could easily bind their protein spikes and get inside the cells, finally causing COVID-19 infection. Hence, people with IMH are more prone to COVID-19 and, ultimately, comorbidities. This review provides enormous information about tissue [lungs, heart and kidneys] damage, pathophysiological changes, and impaired metabolic health of SARS-CoV-2 infected patients. Moreover, it also designates the possible therapeutic targets of COVID-19 and drugs which can be used against these targets.

Abstract
BACKGROUND Arrhythmia is a very common complication of coronavirus disease 2019 (COVID-19); however, the prevalence of ventricular arrhythmia and associated outcomes are not well-explored. Here, we conducted a systematic review and meta-analysis to determine the prevalence and associated death of ventricular arrhythmia and sudden cardiac death (SCD) in patients with COVID-19. METHODS Databases of PubMed, Cochrane Library, Embase, and MdeRxiv were searched. Studies that could calculate the prevalence of ventricular arrhythmia/SCD during hospital admission or associated death in patients with COVID-19 were included. The study was registered with the PROSPERO (CRD42021271328). RESULTS A total of 21 studies with 13,790 patients were included. The pooled prevalence of ventricular arrhythmia was 5% (95% CI: 4-6%), with a relatively high-SCD prevalence (1.8% in hospitalized COVID-19 and 10% in deceased cases of COVID-19). Subgroup analysis showed that ventricular arrhythmia was more common in patients with elevated cardiac troponin T [ES (effect size): 10%, 95% CI: -0.2 to 22%] and in European (ES: 20%, 95% CI: 11-29%) populations. Besides, ventricular arrhythmia was independently associated with an increased risk of death in patients with COVID-19 [odds ratio (OR) = 2.83; 95% CI: 1.78-4.51]. CONCLUSION Ventricular arrhythmia and SCD resulted as a common occurrence with a high prevalence in patients with COVID-19 admitted to the hospital. Furthermore, ventricular arrhythmia significantly contributed to an increased risk of death in hospitalized patients with COVID-19. Coronavirus disease 2019 (COVID-19) is caused by the severe acute respiratory syndrome coronavirus 2 (SARS-CoV-2) and recently has become a serious global pandemic. Age, gender, and comorbidities are known to be common risk factors for severe COVID-19 but are not enough to fully explain the magnitude of their effect on the risk of severity of the disease. Single nucleotide polymorphisms (SNPs) in several genes have been reported as a genetic factor contributing to COVID-19 severity. This comprehensive review focuses on the association between SNPs in four important genes and COVID-19 severity in a global aspect. We discuss a total of 39 SNPs in this review: five SNPs in the ABO gene, nine SNPs in the angiotensin-converting enzyme 2 (ACE2) gene, 19 SNPs in the transmembrane protease serine 2 (TMPRSS2) gene, and six SNPs in the toll-like receptor 7 (TLR7) gene. These SNPs data could assist in monitoring an individual's risk of severe COVID-19 disease, and therefore personalized management and pharmaceutical treatment could be planned in COVID-19 patients.

Abstract
Coronavirus disease (COVID-19) is caused by severe acute respiratory syndrome
virus 2 (SARSCoV- 2), it is a virus belonging to the family Coronaviridae
which includes zoonotic viruses infecting mammals and birds. This disease
emerged in December 2019 in Wuhan, China, and quickly developed into a
global pandemic with high mortality rates. The magnitude of the pandemic has
involved a global collaborative scientific response to develop effective
preventive and therapeutic means using both traditional and advanced
techniques. However, to date specific therapies for COVID-19 are not well
established and only a few vaccines are approved for emergency use. Herbal
remedies, especially essential oils (EOs) can boost immunity which plays a
decisive role in the initiation and progression of the disease in the
preliminary stage of a COVID-19 infection. The low cost and availability of
medicinal plants as well as the almost non-existent side effects encourages
their widespread use during the pandemic, hence a great need to identify
plant extracts for anti-COVID 19 use. Although the majority of studies are
done in silico, with little in vivo or in vitro study, we can have an idea
for further later experiments.

Abstract
Vaccines are proving to be highly effective in controlling hospitalization and deaths associated with severe acute respiratory syndrome coronavirus 2 (SARS-CoV-2) infection, as shown by clinical trials and real-world evidence. However, a deadly second wave of coronavirus disease 2019 (COVID-19), infected by SARS-CoV-2 variants, especially the Delta (B.1.617.2) variant, with an increased number of post-vaccination breakthrough infections were reported in the world recently. Actually, Delta variant not only resulted in a severe surge of vaccine breakthrough infections which was accompanied with high viral load and transmissibility, but also challenged the development of effective vaccines. Therefore, the biological characteristics and epidemiological profile of Delta variant, the current status of Delta variant vaccine breakthrough infections and the mechanism of vaccine breakthrough infections were discussed in this article. In addition, the significant role of the Delta variant spike (S) protein in the mechanism of immune escape of SARS-CoV-2 was highlighted in this article. In particular, we further discussed key points on the future SARS-CoV-2 vaccine research and development, hoping to make a contribution to the early, accurate and rapid control of the COVID-19 epidemic.

Abstract
Approximately one in three people infected with the SARS-CoV-2 virus have mild symptoms or are asymptomatic. However, these individuals can still spread the virus. Regular self-testing can help to detect these individuals and thereby slow the spread and protect the more vulnerable members of society. Here, we present a protocol for use of the COVID-19 rapid antigen test which was made freely available to residents of the United Kingdom in April of this year. This using the lateral flow technique for detection of antigens and is amenable to multiplexing.

Abstract
The novel Coronavirus (nCoV), severe acute respiratory syndrome-Coronavirus-2 (SARS-CoV-2), has shaken the whole world and posed significant challenges to the global healthcare system for more than a year. The scientific community across the globe is trying to combat this virus by developing a safe vaccine that can provide long-term immunity against the virus. The other means of overcoming its pathogenicity is to treat the infected people with available drugs and/or novel therapeutic strategies. The available drugs were previously designed to combat viral infections and come with tested safety. This appears to be the most practical approach as a quick response to the highly infectious pandemic with high morbidity and mortality. Although many repurposed drugs like favipiravir and hydroxychloroquine have been tried, they have been proven toxic and/or less efficacious. This has led the world to find urgent therapeutic interventions (traditional and novel), to help decrease the severity of COVID-19 infection and aim towards recovery. This chapter of the book will discuss the most up-to-date published data with respect to prevention and treatment of COVID-19 infection. Diagnosis also plays an important part in controlling the pandemic caused by the virus. A cheap, accurate and fast identification test for the virus is the need of the hour. This chapter will also throw light on the various diagnostic procedures available for the identification of SARS-CoV-2, till date, along with their advantages and disadvantages.

Abstract
Since the SARS-CoV-2 virus triggered the beginning of the COVID-19 pandemic, scientists, government officials, and healthcare professionals around the world recognized the need for accessible, affordable, and accurate testing to predict and contain the spread of COVID-19. In the months that followed, research teams designed, tested, and rolled out hundreds of diagnostic assays, each with different sampling methods, diagnostic technologies, and sensitivity levels. However, the contagious virus continued to spread; SARS-CoV-2 travelled through airborne particles and spread rapidly, despite the widening use of diagnostic assays. As the pandemic continued, hundreds of millions of people contracted COVID-19 and millions died worldwide. With so many infections, SARS-CoV-2 received many opportunities to replicate and mutate, and from these mutations emerged more contagious, deadly, and difficult-to-diagnose viral mutants. Each change to the viral genome presented potential added challenges to containing the virus, and as such, researchers have continued developing and improving testing methods to keep up with COVID-19. In this chapter, we examine several SARS-CoV-2 variants that have emerged during the pandemic. Additionally, we discuss a few major COVID-19 diagnostic technique categories, including those involving real-time PCR, serology, CRISPR, and electronic biosensors. Finally, we address SARS-CoV-2 variants and diagnostic assays in the age of COVID-19 vaccines.

Abstract
The Coronavirus disease 2019 (COVID-19) pandemic is caused by the severe acute respiratory syndrome coronavirus 2 (SARS-CoV-2). Cardiac injuries are among the complications caused by COVID-19. This report presents the case of a 25-year-old patient hospitalized due to Coronavirus infection with the complication of recurrent acute pericarditis. The patient was treated with colchicine and high-dose ibuprofen, and the patient was then discharged in stable condition. This report demonstrates an effective treatment plan for acute pericarditis secondary to COVID-19 infection.

Abstract
The conditions of the pandemic caused by the novel coronavirus infection (COVID-19) are associated with overloading intensive care units, conversion of hospitals, and changes in routing of patients with acute cardiovascular pathology. At the same time, medical practice is still challenged to provide medical care to patients with acute coronary syndrome (ACS). Patients with COVID-19 and acute myocardial infarction (AMI) are at a higher risk of death while the incidence of this combination of diseases will be growing. This article describes a case of diagnosis and treatment of COVID-19 in a 69-year-old patient who was urgently hospitalized with cardiogenic shock associated with ACS, electrocardiographic signs of complete left bundle branch block, and left ventricular ejection fraction of 19 %. Coronary angiography with stenting was successfully performed in the conditions of extracorporeal membrane oxygenation. The patient received long-term intensive therapy in the intensive care unit followed by symptomatic treatment in the cardiac surgery unit. The patient's condition gradually improved and he was discharged from the hospital on the 56th day. The strategy of intensive care and active follow-up helped saving life of the patient with COVID-19 and AMI.

Abstract
Without effective antivirals, the COVID-19 pandemic will likely continue to substantially affect public health. Medicinal plants and phytochemicals are attractive therapeutic options, particularly those targeting viral proteins essential for replication cycle. Herein, a total 179 phytochemicals of licorice (Glycyrrhiza glabra) were screened and scrutinized against the SARS-CoV-2 main protease (Mpro) with considerable binding affinities in the range of -9.831 to -2.710 kcal/mol. The top 10 compounds with the best docking scores, licuraside, glucoliquiritin apioside, 7,3'-Dihydroxy-5'-methoxyisoflavone, licuroside, kanzonol R, neoisoliquiritin, licochalcone-A, formononetin, isomucronulatol, and licoricone, were redocked using AutoDock Vina, yielding -8.7 to -7.3 kcal/mol binding energy against Glycyrrhizin (-8.0 kcal/mol) as a reference ligand. Four compounds, licuraside, glucoliquiritin apioside, 7,3'-Dihydroxy-5'-methoxyisoflavone, and licuroside, with glycyrrhizin (reference ligand) were considered for the 100 ns MD simulation and post-simulation analysis which support the stability of docked bioactive compounds with viral protein. In vitro studies demonstrated robust anti-SARS-CoV-2 activity of licorice and glycyrrhizin under different treatment protocols (simulations treatment with viral infection, post-infection treatment, and pre-treatment), suggesting multiple mechanisms for action. Although both compounds inhibited SARS-CoV-2 replication, the half-maximal inhibitory concentration (IC50) of glycyrrhizin was substantially lower than licorice. This study supports proceeding with in vivo experimentation and clinical trials and highlights licorice and glycyrrhizin as potential therapeutics for COVID-19.

Abstract
Immunotherapy is a treatment modality that has a broad and rapidly growing range of applications to treat both chronic and acute diseases, including rheumatoid arthritis, Crohn disease, cancer, and COVID-19. Emergency physicians must be aware of the breadth of applications and be able to consider the effects of immunotherapies when patients on these treatments present to the hospital. This article provides a review of the mechanisms of action, indications for use, and potential complications of immunotherapy treatments that are relevant in the emergency care setting.

Abstract
The "cytokine storm" (CS) consists of a spectrum of different immune dysregulation disorders characterized by constitutional symptoms, systemic inflammation and multiorgan dysfunction triggered by an uncontrolled immune response. Particularly in respiratory virus infections, the cytokine storm plays a primary role in the pathogenesis of respiratory disease and the clinical outcome of respiratory diseases, leading to complications such as alveolar edema and hypoxia. In this review, we wanted to analyze the different pathogenetic mechanisms involved in the various respiratory viral pandemics (COVID-19; SARS; MERS; H1N1 influenza A and Spanish flu) which have affected humans in this and last century, with particular attention to the phenomenon of the "cytokine storm" which determines the clinical severity of the respiratory disease and consequently its lethality.

Abstract
Spread of the severe acute respiratory syndrome coronavirus type 2 (SARS-CoV-2) is a demanding challenge. This is of particular importance in schools and public areas of unavoidable access. New viral mutations may increase infectivity and require even better methods to identify areas of potential hazards. High-throughput SARS-CoV-2 testing and legal restrictions are not effective in order to get the current outbreak under control. The occurrence of new SARS-CoV-2 variants with a higher transmissibility requires efficient strategies for early detection and surveillance. Until today, testing focuses on nasal or pharyngeal mucosa swabs, neglecting the origin of aerosolic transmission, thus failing to detect the spread by carriers of the virus. Therefore, in this study, SARS-CoV-2 RNA levels were determined by quantitative real time PCR in aerosols collected by non-powered cold traps. SARS-CoV-2 spreading kinetics were recorded in indoor hotspots within a high-endemic area. These hotspots included a SARS-CoV-2 isolation unit, an outpatient endoscopy facility, a concert hall, and a shopping mall. For determination of viral presence aerosols were collected by cold traps positioned at different locations in the area of interest over a period of 4-6 h. Indoor SARS-CoV-2 hotspots were found in non-ventilated areas and in zones that are predisposed to a buoyancy (chimney) effect. SARS-CoV-2 RNA in those aerosols reached concentrations of 105 copies/mL, while extensive outdoor air ventilation reliably eliminated SARS-CoV-2 aerosol contamination. The method presented herein is effective for the identification of SARS-CoV-2 indoor hotspots and may help to characterize the spreading kinetics of SARS-CoV-2. Moreover, it can be used for the surveillance of emerging SARS-CoV-2 variants. Due to low costs and easy handling, the procedure might enable efficient algorithms for COVID-19 screening and prevention.

Abstract
Coronavirus disease 2019 (COVID-19) is a serious respiratory disease mediated by severe acute respiratory syndrome coronavirus 2 (SARS-CoV-2) infection. The worldwide spread of COVID-19 has caused millions of confirmed cases and morbidity, and the crisis has greatly affected global economy and daily life and changed our attitudes towards life. The reproductive system, as a potential target, is at a high risk of SARS-CoV-2 infection, and females are more vulnerable to viral infection compared with males. Therefore, female fertility and associated reproductive health care in the COVID-19 era need more attention. This review summarises the mechanism of SARS-CoV-2 infection in the female reproductive system and discusses the impact of the COVID-19 crisis on female fertility. Studies have proven that COVID-19 might affect female fertility and interfere with assisted reproductive technology procedures. The side effects of vaccines against the virus on ovarian reserve and pregnancy have not yet been well investigated. In the future, the female fertility after SARS-CoV-2 infection and vaccination needs more attention because of the uncertainty of COVID-19.

Abstract
This study aimed to determine whether published pharmacokinetic (PK) models can adequately predict the PK profile of imatinib in a new indication, such as coronavirus disease 2019 (COVID‐19). Total (bound + unbound) and unbound imatinib plasma concentrations obtained from 134 patients with COVID‐19 participating in the CounterCovid study and from an historical dataset of 20 patients with gastrointestinal stromal tumor (GIST) and 85 patients with chronic myeloid leukemia (CML) were compared. Total imatinib area under the concentration time curve (AUC), maximum concentration (Cmax) and trough concentration (Ctrough) were 2.32‐fold (95% confidence interval [CI] 1.34–3.29), 2.31‐fold (95% CI 1.33–3.29), and 2.32‐fold (95% CI 1.11–3.53) lower, respectively, for patients with CML/GIST compared with patients with COVID‐19, whereas unbound concentrations were comparable among groups. Inclusion of alpha1‐acid glycoprotein (AAG) concentrations measured in patients with COVID‐19 into a previously published model developed to predict free imatinib concentrations in patients with GIST using total imatinib and plasma AAG concentration measurements (AAG‐PK‐Model) gave an estimated mean (SD) prediction error (PE) of −20% (31%) for total and −7.0% (56%) for unbound concentrations. Further covariate modeling with this combined dataset showed that in addition to AAG; age, bodyweight, albumin, CRP, and intensive care unit admission were predictive of total imatinib oral clearance. In conclusion, high total and unaltered unbound concentrations of imatinib in COVID‐19 compared to CML/GIST were a result of variability in acute phase proteins. This is a textbook example of how failure to take into account differences in plasma protein binding and the unbound fraction when interpreting PK of highly protein bound drugs, such as imatinib, could lead to selection of a dose with suboptimal efficacy in patients with COVID‐19.

Abstract
The outbreak of COVID-19 was followed by a rapid spread leading to its declaration as a pandemic in a short time. The transmission through aerosols and direct contact with infected individuals forced the application of strict safety protocols and rearrangements in the activities of different healthcare systems around the world. Ophthalmology healthcare workers are highly exposed to viral infection and therefore adjustments were made to ensure the safety of patients and health providers by performing only urgent treatments. The suspension and delay in regular follow-up visits and the lower number of patients recorded during the lockdown period due to restrictions and patient anxiety led to severe consequences in the clinical and anatomical outcome affecting the overall prognosis. The current review aims to summarize the effect of the lockdown policies in the number and profile of patients that attended the ophthalmology clinics from different countries and analyze the effect of the pandemic in terms of vision and patient functionality. The effects of the pandemic included a reduction in the number of appointments, cancellations of non-emergency conditions and delays of surgical interventions. These had a negative effect in terms of visual outcomes.

Abstract
The COVID-19 pandemic has significantly impacted the way of life worldwide and continues to bring high mortality rates to at-risk groups. Patients who develop severe COVID-19 pneumonia, often complicated with ARDS, are left with limited treatment options with no targeted therapy currently available. One of the features of COVID-19 is an overaggressive immune reaction that leads to multiorgan failure. Mesenchymal stromal cell (MSC) treatment has been in development for various clinical indications for over a decade, with a safe side effect profile and promising results in preclinical and clinical trials. Therefore, the use of MSCs in COVID-19-induced respiratory failure and ARDS was a logical step in order to find a potential treatment option for the most severe patients. In this review, the main characteristics of MSCs, their proposed mechanism of action in COVID-19 treatment and the effect of this therapy in published case reports and clinical trials are discussed.

Abstract
Glaucoma is an intraocular pressure-related ophthalmic disease with multiple causes that results in an optic neuropathy and vision loss. Intraocular pressure elevation is among its strongest risk factors. While glaucoma is mostly primary in etiology, secondary glaucoma is not infrequent. Recognizing its cause is imperative, since treatment is often different depending on the pathophysiologic mechanism. Numerous clinically relevant ophthalmic infections can result in robust inflammatory responses that may result in pressure elevation or intraocular anatomic configurations that predispose to pressure elevation. Knowing the mechanisms by which these infections can lead to glaucoma is critical in treating, and we consolidate what is currently known in regards to how infectious diseases lead to glaucoma.
