Abstract
Mechanical compliance and electrical enhancement are crucial for pressure sensors to promote performances when perceiving external stimuli. Here we propose a bioinspired multiscale heterogeneity-based interface to adaptively regulate its structure layout and switch to desirable piezoresistive behaviors with ultralow detection limitation. In such a multiscale heterogeneities system, the micro-/nanoscale spiny Ag-MnO2 heterostructure contributes to an ultralow detection limitation of 0.008 Pa and can perceive minor pressure increments under preloads with high resolution (0.0083%). The macroscale heterogeneous orientation of the cellular backbone enables anisotropic deformation, allowing the sensor to switch to rational sensitivity and working range (e.g., 580 kPa-1 for 0-20 kPa/54 kPa-1 for 60-140 kPa) as required. The sensor's stepwise activation progresses from the micro-/nanoscale heterostructure to the macroscale heterogeneous orientation, which can adaptively match diverse sensing tasks in complex applications scenarios. This multiscale heterogeneous and switchable design holds immense potential in the development of intelligent electromechanical devices, including wearable sensors, soft robotics, and smart actuators.

Abstract
Wound healing involves multi-stages of physiological responses, including hemostasis, inflammation, cell proliferation, and tissue remodeling. Satisfying all demands throughout different stages remains a rarely addressed challenge. Here we introduce an innovative all-aqueous microfluidic printing technique for fabricating multifunctional bioactive microfibers, effectively contributing to all four phases of the healing process. The distinctive feature of the developed microfibers lies in their capacity to be printed in a free-form manner in the aqueous-two phase system (ATPS). This is achieved through interfacial coacervation between alkyl-chitosan and alginate, with enhanced structural integrity facilitated by simultaneous crosslinking with calcium ions and alginate. The all-aqueous printed microfibers exhibit exceptional performance in terms of cell recruitment, blood cell coagulation, and hemostasis. The inclusion of a dodecyl carbon chain and amino groups in alkyl-chitosan imparts remarkable antimicrobial properties by anchoring to bacteria, complemented by potent antibacterial effects of encapsulated silver nanoparticles. Moreover, microfibers can load bioactive drugs like epidermal growth factor (EGF), preserving their activity and enhancing therapeutic effects during cell proliferation and tissue remodeling. With these sequential functions to guide the whole-stage wound healing, this work offers a versatile and robust paradigm for comprehensive wound treatment, holding great potential for optimal healing outcomes.

Abstract
Supramolecular hybrids of DNA and single-walled carbon nanotubes (SWCNTs) have been introduced in numerous biosensing applications due to their unique optical properties. Recent aqueous two-phase (ATP) purification methods for SWCNTs have gained popularity by introducing specificity and homogeneity into the sensor design process. Using murine macrophages probed by near-infrared and Raman microscopies, we show that ATP purification increases the retention time of DNA-SWCNTs within cells while simultaneously enhancing the optical performance and stability of the engineered nanomaterial. Over a period of 6 h, we observe 45% brighter fluorescence intensity and no significant change in emission wavelength of ATP-purified DNA-SWCNTs relative to as-dispersed SWCNTs. These findings provide strong evidence of how cells differentially process engineered nanomaterials depending on their state of purification, lending to the future development of more robust and sensitive biosensors with desirable in vivo optical parameters using surfactant-based ATP systems with a subsequent exchange to biocompatible functionalization.

Abstract
Bacterial cellulose (BC) is a chemically pure, non-toxic, and non-pyrogenic natural polymer with high mechanical strength and a complex fibrillar porous structure. Due to these unique biological and physical properties, BC has been amply used in the food industry and, to a somewhat lesser extent, in medicine and cosmetology. To expand its application the BC structure can be modified. This review presented some recent developments in electrically conductive BC-based composites. The as-synthesized BC is an excellent dielectric. Conductive polymers, graphene oxide, nanoparticles and other materials are used to provide it with conductive properties. Conductive bacterial cellulose (CBC) is currently investigated in numerous areas including electrically conductive scaffolds for tissue regeneration, implantable and wearable biointerfaces, flexible batteries, sensors, EMI shielding composites. However, there are several issues to be addressed before CBC composites can enter the market, namely, composite mechanical strength reduction, porosity decrease, change in chemical characteristics. Some of them can be addressed both at the stage of synthesis, biologically, or by adding (nano)materials with the required properties to the BC structure. We propose several solutions to meet the challenges and suggest some promising BC applications.

Abstract
Wound healing is a complex physiological process involving four coordinated stages, including hemostasis, anti-inflammatory, repair, and epithelial formation. Herein, multifunctional core-shell alkylated chitosan/calcium alginate microfibers are fabricated as a novel strategy for promoting wound healing by contributing to each four stages in the entire healing process. Taking advantages of the microfluidic technology, the core-shell microfibers can be generated in a continuous and convenient manner through the interfacial assembly between alkylated chitosan and Na-alginate, as well as the simultaneous crosslink between calcium and the alginate. Generated microfibers possess unique internal structure which can effectively promote the absorption of blood and exudate produced during trauma. Moreover, the dodecyl carbon chain and abundant amino groups of alkylated chitosan provide microfibers with excellent hemostatic and antibacterial properties, which can repair acute hemorrhage and destroy bacteria rapidly. Further, the chronic wound healing process of a skin injury model can be significantly promoted by applying the fabricated microfibers. With these sequential functions to guide the whole-stage wound healing, the presented multifunctional core-shell microfibers create a versatile and robust paradigm for comprehensive wound treatment.

Abstract
Guiding the regrowth of thousands of nerve fibers within a regeneration-friendly environment enhances the regeneration capacity in the case of peripheral nerve injury (PNI) and spinal cord injury (SCI). Although clinical treatments are available and several studies have been conducted, the development of nerve guidance conduits (NGCs) with desirable properties, including controllable size, hundreds of nerve bundle-sized microchannels, and host stem-cell recruitment, remains challenging. In this study, the micropattern-based fabrication method was combined with stem-cell recruitment factor (substance P, SP) immobilization onto the main material to produce a size-tunable NGC with hundreds of microchannels with stem-cell recruitment capability. The SP-immobilized multiple microchannels aligned the regrowth of nerve fibers and recruited the host stem cells, which enhanced the functional regeneration capacity. This method has wide applicability in the modification and augmentation of NGCs, such as bifurcated morphology or directional topographies on microchannels. Additional improvements in fabrication will advance the regeneration technology and improve the treatment of PNI/SCI.

Abstract
The development of a portable, controllable, and environmentally friendly electronic skin (e-skin) is highly desirable; however, it presents a major challenge. Herein, a biocompatible, biodegradable, and easily usable hydrogel was designed and fabricated as e-skin to enable the transmission of information regarding the spatial pressure distribution. Silk fibroin (SF) was used as the hydrogel skeleton, which endowed the hydrogel with intelligent mechanical sensitivity. During its conditioning in weakly acidic media, the density of the enzymatic crosslink increased and a dense network was formed due to the formation of covalent/hydrogen bonds. Additionally, a conductive SF/polyvinyl alcohol (PVA) hybrid film was molded as a flexible electrode after graphite deposition. The above SF sensing unit based on SF hydrogels and SF/PVA hybrid films showed high strain sensitivity (4.78), fast responsiveness (<0.1 s), good cycling stability (≥10,000), excellent biocompatibility, and biodegradability. Importantly, a coplanar 8 × 8 pixel SF-based e-skin array was successfully fabricated and applied for 3D signal transmission of the object. The SF-based e-skin was capable of precisely tracking the changes in the pulse pressure, the movement of the finger joint, and the vibrations of the vocal cord. Therefore, the current findings provide a solid foundation for future studies exploring the next generation of electronic devices.

Abstract
Tumor metastasis is one of the main causes of cancer incidence and death worldwide. In the process of tumor metastasis, the isolation and analysis of circulating tumor cells (CTCs) plays a crucial role in the early diagnosis and prognosis of cancer patients. Due to the rarity and inherent heterogeneity of CTCs, there is an urgent need for reliable CTCs separation and detection methods in order to obtain valuable information on tumor metastasis and progression from CTCs. Microfluidic technology is increasingly used in various studies of CTCs separation, identification and characterization because of its unique advantages, such as low cost, simple operation, less reagent consumption, miniaturization of the system, rapid detection and accurate control. This paper reviews the research progress of microfluidic technology in CTCs separation and detection in recent years, as well as the potential clinical application of CTCs, looks forward to the application prospect of microfluidic technology in the treatment of tumor metastasis, and briefly discusses the development prospect of microfluidic biosensor.

Abstract
Cancer has become the leading cause of human death worldwide, and there is an urgent need to design and develop new oncology drugs. In this study, we report series of cationic amphiphilic dendrons with different hydrophobic alkyl chains (Cn) and different generations (Gx) and demonstrate their use for anticancer applications. The results revealed that lower-generation dendrons (G1) with a longer hydrophobic alkyl chain (C12 and C18) have stronger antitumor activity. Among these dendrons, a lead candidate C12-G1 was identified that demonstrated excellent broad-spectrum antitumor activity in 7 cancer cell lines including highly metastatic tumor cells, while simultaneously, hemolysis was negligible. Mechanistic studies showed that C12-G1 could lead to cytoplasmic leakage and induce cancer cell necrosis through membrane disruption. In addition, C12-G1 showed potent inhibition of tumor growth in a B16-F10 melanoma model. In conclusion, these findings demonstrate that the cationic amphiphilic dendron might be a promising agent for anticancer application.

Abstract
Despite the adequacy of the endogenous steroid (progesterone) levels in biological functioning, elevated levels of progesterone hormone have several physiological effects that are amplified due to its direct and indirect uptake from the environment, food products, and medical therapy. So, it is much needed to evaluate the progesterone levels in environmental samples as well as for biological fluids. In this work, we focused on the development of the nano sensing probe for the selective detection of progesterone among the library of steroid hormones belonging to the class of female sex hormones. Herein, functionalization of dipeptide is carried out at N-terminal to produce N-functionalized dipeptide (SS3), and simultaneously, its self-assembly properties are explored. Furthermore, HR-TEM imaging was also performed to examine the morphology of the self-assembled architectures before and after the addition of the steroid hormone. To investigate the binding mechanism of the sensing probe, Fluorescence spectroscopy, Circular Dichroism (CD), MD-Simulation, and DFT studies were performed and studied in detail. Moreover, to check the potency of the real-time application of the developed nanoprobe, we have successfully determined the spiked concentration of progesterone levels in pharmaceutical and biological fluid samples with functional percentage recovery. Also, the stability and other competitive binding studies of the probe with the coexisting substances are performed to check the rationality of the sensing probe at physiological conditions.

Abstract
Stretchable electronics incorporating critical sensing, data transmission, display and powering functionalities, is crucial to emerging wearable healthcare applications. To date, methods to achieve stretchability of individual functional devices have been extensively investigated. However, integration strategies of these stretchable devices to achieve all-stretchable systems are still under exploration, in which the reliable stretchable interconnection is a key element. Here, solderless stretchable interconnections based on mechanically interlocking microbridges are developed to realize the assembly of individual stretchable devices onto soft patternable circuits toward multifunctional all-stretchable platforms. This stretchable interconnection can effectively bridge interlayer conductivity with tight adhesion through both conductive microbridges and selectively distributed adhesive polymer. Consequently, enhanced stretchability up to a strain of 35% (R/R0 ≤ 5) is shown, compared with conventional solder-assisted connections which lose electrical conduction at a strain of less than 5% (R/R0 ≈ 30). As a proof of concept, a self-powered all-stretchable data-acquisition platform is fabricated by surface mounting a stretchable strain sensor and a supercapacitor onto a soft circuit through solderless interconnections. This solderless interconnecting strategy for surface-mountable devices can be utilized as a valuable technology for the integration of stretchable devices to achieve all-soft multifunctional systems.

Abstract
Gene therapy has great potential to treat brain diseases. However, genetic drugs need to overcome a cascade of barriers for their full potential. The conventional delivery systems often struggle to meet expectations. Natural biological particles that are highly optimized for specific functions in body, can inspire optimization of dynamic gene-loaded nanoassemblies (DGN). The DGN refer to gene loaded nanoassemblies whose functions and structures are changeable in response to the biological microenvironments or can dynamically interact with tissues or cells. The nature-inspired DGN can meet the needs in brain diseases treatment, including i) Non-elimination in blood (N), ii) Across the blood-brain barrier (A), iii) Targeting cells (T), iv) Efficient uptake (U), v) Controllable release (R), vi) Eyeable (E)-abbreviated as the "NATURE". In this Review, from nature to "NATURE", we mainly summarize the specific application of nature-inspired DGN in the "NATURE" cascade process. Biological senses are critical for the survival of organisms. A great deal of attention has focused on elucidating the underlying physiological mechanisms of the senses, inspiring various sensing techniques. In this Perspective, we propose the concept of artificial sense technology, which mimics the biological senses but differs in terms of objective sensing and intelligent feedback capabilities. We first summarize recent progress in the use of nanotechnologies to emulate the biological senses and then outline the advantages of artificial sense technology, which extend the capabilities of its biological counterparts. Competitive and/or cooperative interactions of graphene-family materials and benzo[a]pyrene with pulmonary surfactant: a computational and experimental study. Part Fibre Toxicol 2021; 18:46. Abstract
BACKGROUND Airborne nanoparticles can be inhaled and deposit in human alveoli, where pulmonary surfactant (PS) molecules lining at the alveolar air-water interface act as the first barrier against inhaled nanoparticles entering the body. Although considerable efforts have been devoted to elucidate the mechanisms underlying nanoparticle-PS interactions, our understanding on this important issue is limited due to the high complexity of the atmosphere, in which nanoparticles are believed to experience transformations that remarkably change the nanoparticles' surface properties and states. By contrast with bare nanoparticles that have been extensively studied, relatively little is known about the interactions between PS and inhaled nanoparticles which already adsorb contaminants. In this combined experimental and computational effort, we investigate the joint interactions between PS and graphene-family materials (GFMs) with coexisting benzo[a]pyrene (BaP). RESULTS Depending on the BaP concentration, molecular agglomeration, and graphene oxidation, different nanocomposite structures are formed via BaPs adsorption on GFMs. Upon deposition of GFMs carrying BaPs at the pulmonary surfactant (PS) layer, competition and cooperation of interactions between different components determines the interfacial processes including BaP solubilization, GFM translocation and PS perturbation. Importantly, BaPs adsorbed on GFMs are solubilized to increase BaP's bioavailability. By contrast with graphene adhering on the PS layer to release part of adsorbed BaPs, more BaPs are released from graphene oxide, which induces a hydrophilic pore in the PS layer and shows adverse effect on the PS biophysical function. Translocation of graphene across the PS layer is facilitated by BaP adsorption through segregating it from contact with PS, while translocation of graphene oxide is suppressed by BaP adsorption due to the increase of surface hydrophobicity. Graphene extracts PS molecules from the layer, and the resultant PS depletion declines with graphene oxidation and BaP adsorption. CONCLUSION GFMs showed high adsorption capacity towards BaPs to form nanocomposites. Upon deposition of GFMs carrying BaPs at the alveolar air-water interface covered by a thin PS layer, the interactions of GFM-PS, GFM-BaP and BaP-PS determined the interfacial processes of BaP solubilization, GFM translocation and PS perturbation.

Abstract
The knowledge of mechanics of materials has been extensively implemented in developing functional materials, giving rise to recent advances in soft actuators, flexible electronics, mechanical metamaterials, tunable mechanochromics, regenerative mechanomedicine, etc. While conventional mechanics of materials offers passive access to mechanical properties of materials in existing forms, a paradigm shift is emerging toward proactive programming of materials' functionality by leveraging the force-geometry-property relationships. Here, such a rising field is coined as "mechanomaterials". To profile the concept, the design principles in this field at four scales is first outlined, namely the atomic scale, the molecular scale, the manipulation of nanoscale materials, and the microscale design of structural materials. A variety of techniques have been recruited to deliver the multiscale programming of functional mechanomaterials, such as strain engineering, capillary assembly, topological interlocking, kirigami, origami, to name a few. Engineering optical and biological functionalities have also been achieved by implementing the fundamentals of mechanochemistry and mechanobiology. Nonetheless, the field of mechanomaterials is still in its infancy, with many open challenges and opportunities that need to be addressed. The authors hope this review can serve as a modest spur to attract more researchers to further advance this field.

Abstract
Currently, cancer is among the most challenging diseases due to its ability to continuously evolve into a more complex muldimentional system, in addition to its high capability to spread to other organs and tissues. In this context, the relevance of nanobiomaterials (NBMs) for the development of new more effective and less harmful treatments is increasing. NBMs provide the possibility of combining several functionalities on a single system, expectedly in a synergic way, to better perform the treatment and cure. However, the control of properties such as colloidal stability, circulation time, pharmacokinetics, and biodistribution, assuring the concentration in specific target tissues and organs, while keeping all desired properties, tends to be dependent on subtle changes in surface chemistry. Hence, the behavior of such materials in different media/environments is of uttermost relevance and concern since it can compromise their efficiency and safety on application. Given the bright perspectives, many efforts have been focused on the development of nanomaterials fulfilling the requirements for real application. These include robust and reproducible preparation methods to avoid aggregation while preserving the interaction properties. The possible impact of nanomaterials in different forms of diagnosis and therapy has been demonstrated in the past few years, given the perspectives on how revolutionary they can be in medicine and health. Considering the high biocompatibility and suitability, this review is focused on titanium dioxide– and iron oxide–based nanoagents highlighting the current trends and main advancements in the research for cancer therapies. The effects of phenomena, such as aggregation and agglomeration, the formation of the corona layer, and how they can compromise relevant properties of nanomaterials and their potential applicability, are also addressed. In short, this review summarizes the current understanding and perspectives on such smart nanobiomaterials for diagnostics, treatment, and theranostics of diseases.

Abstract
Radiotherapy (RT) is a popular clinical therapy method for extending cancer patient survival, but is hampered by severe side effects and the weak therapy effect. Herein, responsive degradable selenium (Se) theranostic agents (Se@SiO2 @Bi nanocomposites (NCs)) are fabricated, which combine computed tomography (CT) imaging and simultaneously enhance the therapeutic effects of photothermal therapy (PTT) and RT, while reducing the side effects of radiation. The Se@SiO2 @Bi theranostic agents can accumulate at the tumor site, and responsively decompose to releease Se, avoiding systemic toxicity by the element. Se enhances the effect of PTT/RT, simultaneously reducing the side effects of RT. The Se@SiO2 @Bi NCs as CT agents also exhibit significantly enhanced contrast imaging performance due to the high atomic number of Bi. More importantly, the Se@SiO2 @Bi NCs can be rapidly excreted without long-term toxicity, owing to responsive degradation into ultrasmall particles (<5 nm) at the tumor site. In vitro and in vivo results show that the Se@SiO2 @Bi NCs can remarkably inhibit tumor cells, without causing appreciable toxicity during the treatment. This study opens a new perspective in rationally designing responsive degradable theranostic agents for future tumor therapy with enhanced therapeutic efficacy and lesser side effects.

Abstract
Detection of cell-free DNA (cfDNA) has an impact on DNA analysis in liquid biopsies. However, current strategies to detect cfDNA have limitations that should be overcome, such as having low sensitivity and requiring much time and a specialized instrument. Thus, non-invasive and rapid detection tools are needed for disease prevention and early-stage treatment. Here we developed a device having a microheater integrated with zinc oxide nanowires (microheater-ZnO-NWs) to detect target single-stranded DNAs (ssDNAs) based on DNA probe hybridization. We confirmed experimentally that our device realizedin-situannealed DNA probes by which we subsequently detected target ssDNAs. We envision that this device can be utilized for fundamental studies related to nanobiodevice-based DNA detection.

Abstract
Biomedical devices that involved continuous and real-time health-care monitoring have drawn much attention in modern medicine, of which skin electronics and implantable devices are widely investigated. Skin electronics are characterized for their non-invasive access to the physiological signals, and implantable devices are superior at the diagnosis and therapy integration. Despite the significant progress achieved, many gaps remain to be explored to provide a more comprehensive overview of human health. As the connecting point of the outer environment and human systems, the oral cavity contains many unique biomarkers that are absent in skin or inner organs, and hence, this could become a promising alternative locus for designing health-care monitoring devices. In this review, we outline the status of the oral cavity during the communication of the environment and human systems and compare the intraoral devices with skin electronics and implantable devices from the biophysical and biochemical aspects. We further summarize the established diagnosis database and technologies that could be adopted to design intraoral biosensors. Finally, the challenges and potential opportunities for intraoral biosensors are discussed. Intraoral biosensors could become an important complement for existing biomedical devices to constitute a more reliable health-care monitoring system.

Abstract
Research on the field of implantable electronic devices that can be directly applied in the body with various functionalities is increasingly intensifying due to its great potential for various therapeutic applications. While conventional implantable electronics generally include rigid and hard conductive materials, their surrounding biological objects are soft and dynamic. The mechanical mismatch between implanted devices and biological environments induces damages in the body especially for long-term applications. Stretchable electronics with outstanding mechanical compliance with biological objects effectively improve such limitations of existing rigid implantable electronics. In this article, the recent progress of implantable soft electronics based on various conductive nanocomposites is systematically described. In particular, representative fabrication approaches of conductive and stretchable nanocomposites for implantable soft electronics and various in vivo applications of implantable soft electronics are focused on. To conclude, challenges and perspectives of current implantable soft electronics that should be considered for further advances are discussed.

Abstract
Patterning of surfaces with a simple strategy provides insights into the functional interfaces by suitable modification of the surface by novel techniques. Especially, highly ordered structural topographies and chemical features from the wide range of interfaces have been considered as important characteristics to understand the complex relationship between the surface chemistries and biological systems. Here, we report a simple fabrication method to create patterned surfaces over large areas using evaporative self-assembly that is designed to produce a sacrificial template and lithographic etch masks of polymeric stripe patterns, ranging from micrometer to nanoscale. By facilitating a roll-on-plate geometry, the periodically patterned surface structures formed by repetitive slip-stick motions were thoroughly examined to be used for the deposition of the Au nanoparticles decorated graphene oxide (i.e., AuNPs, ~21 nm) and the formation of conductive graphene channels. The fluorescently labeled thiol-modified DNA was applied on the patterned arrays of graphene oxide (GO)/AuNPs, and biotin-streptavidin sensitive devices built with graphene-based transistors (GFETs, effective mobility of ~320 cm2 V-1 s-1) were demonstrated as examples of the platform for the next-generation biosensors with the high sensing response up to ~1 nM of target analyte (i.e., streptavidin). Our strategy suggests that the stripe patterned arrays of polymer films as sacrificial templates can be a simple route to creating highly sensitive biointerfaces and highlighting the development of new chemically patterned surfaces composed of graphene-based nanomaterials.

Abstract
Aim The interaction of NPs with biological systems may reveal useful details about their pharmacodynamic, anticancer and antibacterial effects. Methods Herein, the interaction of as-synthesized Co3O4 NPs with HSA was explored by different kinds of fluorescence and CD spectroscopic methods, as well as molecular docking studies. Also, the anticancer effect of Co3O4 NPs against leukemia K562 cells was investigated by MTT, LDH, caspase, real-time PCR, ROS, cell cycle, and apoptosis assays. Afterwards, the antibacterial effects of Co3O4 NPs against three pathogenic bacteria were disclosed by antibacterial assays. Results Different characterization methods such as TEM, DLS, zeta potential and XRD studies proved that fabricated Co3O4 NPs by sol-gel method have a diameter of around 50 nm, hydrodynamic radius of 177 nm with a charge distribution of −33.04 mV and a well-defined crystalline phase. Intrinsic, extrinsic, and synchronous fluorescence as well as CD studies, respectively, showed that the HSA undergoes some fluorescence quenching, minor conformational changes, microenvironmental changes as well as no structural changes in the secondary structure, after interaction with Co3O4 NPs. Molecular docking results also verified that the spherical clusters with a dimension of 1.5 nm exhibit the most binding energy with HSA molecules. Anticancer assays demonstrated that Co3O4 NPs can selectively lead to the reduction of K562 cell viability through the cell membrane damage, activation of caspase-9, -8 and -3, elevation of Bax/Bcl-2 mRNA ratio, ROS production, cell cycle arrest, and apoptosis. Finally, antibacterial assays disclosed that Co3O4 NPs can stimulate a promising antibacterial effect against pathogenic bacteria. Conclusion In general, these observations can provide useful information for the early stages of nanomaterial applications in therapeutic platforms.

Abstract
Nature uses vascular systems to permit large-area control over the functionality of surfaces that lie above them. In this work, the application of this concept to the control of a hybrid living-nonliving system is demonstrated. Defined arrangements of vascular channels are created in agar using a fugitive ink printing method. The antibiotic gentamicin is then introduced into the vascular network where it diffuses to the surface and interacts with a model system of Escherichia coli cells. The cells either live or die depending on their distance from the underlying channels, permitting spatial control over the biological system. Using single-channel systems to define critical parameters, a theoretical model is developed to define the final surface pattern based solely on the arrangement of the underlying vascular channels. The model is then successfully used to create more complex arrangements of cells at the surface. Finally, by introducing different types of active compounds into separate vascular channels, a mixture of bacterial species is separated and localized at defined points. This work demonstrates the ability of bioinspired embedded vascular systems to predictably control a biological system at a surface, laying the groundwork for future spatially and temporally controlled biointerfaces in both industry and medicine.

Abstract
In this study, CuS@PDA nanoparticles were synthesized and used to create a novel tumor-targeting nanocomposite platform composed of copper sulfide@polydopamine-folic acid/doxorubicin (CuS@PDA-FA/DOX) for performing both photothermal and chemotherapeutic cancer treatment. The nanocomposite platform has ultrahigh loading levels (4.2 ± 0.2 mg mg-1) and a greater photothermal conversion efficiency (η = 42.7%) than CuS/PDA alone. The uptake of CuS@PDA-FA/DOX nanocomposites is much higher in MCF-7 cells than in A549 cells because MCF-7 cells have much higher folic acid receptors than A549. Under near infrared (NIR) irradiation, the CuS@PDA-FA/DOX system using a synergistic combination of photothermal therapy and chemotherapy yields a better therapeutic effect than either photothermal therapy or chemotherapy alone. The treatment is very effective with the cell viability is only 5.6 ± 1.4%.

Abstract
Most of the existing single-component nanostructures cannot provide comprehensive diagnostic information, and their treatment strategies always have to combine other therapeutics as a complementary for effective biomedical application. Here, we adopted a facile approach to design a theranostic nanoflower (NF) with robust efficacy for comprehensive tumor diagnosis and quadruple synergistic cancer therapy. The NF is equipped with a metallic hybrid of several functional elements and flower-like superstructures and thus shows excellent in vitro and in vivo theranostic performance. It shows high X-ray attenuation coefficiency for the Bi element, strong near-infrared (NIR) plasmon absorbance and singlet oxygen (1O2) generation ability for the Mo element, and great photothermal conversion efficiency (54.7%) because of enhanced photoabsorption of the petal structure. Moreover, the NF realizes a very high doxorubicin-loading efficiency (90.0%) and bimodal pH/NIR-responsive drug release, posing a promise as a controlled drug carrier. The NF also shows excellent performance at trimodal magnetic resonance/X-ray computed tomography/photoacoustic imaging for comprehensive tumor diagnosis. To our best knowledge, it is the first time that integrating at least seven functions into one biomedical nanomaterial for well-rounded tumor theranostics has been reported. This "all-in-one" NF opens a new perspective in developing novel and efficient multifunctional nanotheranostics.

Abstract
A charge-reversal amphiphilic pillar[5]arene, P5NH-DCA, bearing 10 charge-reversal headgroups is reported. It targets the cell membrane of cancer cells and selectively destroys the cancer cells by disrupting the membrane. In the acidic tumor microenvironment, the headgroup charge of P5NH-DCA reversed from negative to positive owing to hydrolysis of the acid-labile amide group. The hydrolyzed product bearing multiple positive charges can bind to the cell membrane and then disrupt the membrane of cancer cells with high efficiency. However, under the neutral microenvironment of healthy cells, the negatively charged P5NH-DCA remains stable and the cytotoxicity is considerably reduced. The strategy killing the cancer cells by membrane disruption may represent a new route of cancer chemotherapy.

Abstract
Stretchable conductors are the basic units of advanced flexible electronic devices, such as skin-like sensors, stretchable batteries and soft actuators. Current fabrication strategies are mainly focused on the stretchability of the conductor with less emphasis on the huge mismatch of the conductive material and polymeric substrate, which results in stability issues during long-term use. Thermal-radiation-assisted metal encapsulation is reported to construct an interlocking layer between polydimethylsiloxane (PDMS) and gold by employing a semipolymerized PDMS substrate to encapsulate the gold clusters/atoms during thermal deposition. The stability of the stretchable conductor is significantly enhanced based on the interlocking effect of metal and polymer, with high interfacial adhesion (>2 MPa) and cyclic stability (>10 000 cycles). Also, the conductor exhibits superior properties such as high stretchability (>130%) and large active surface area (>5:1 effective surface area/geometrical area). It is noted that this method can be easily used to fabricate such a stretchable conductor in a wafer-scale format through a one-step process. As a proof of concept, both long-term implantation in an animal model to monitor intramuscular electric signals and on human skin for detection of biosignals are demonstrated. This design approach brings about a new perspective on the exploration of stretchable conductors for biomedical applications.

Abstract
Rational design of controllable drug release systems is important for tumor treatments due to the nonspecific toxicity of many chemotherapeutics. Herein, laser or light responsive pharmaceutical delivery nanoparticles are designed, by taking the advantages of redox responsive selenium (Se) substituted polymer as shell and photosensitive porphyrin zirconium metal-organic frameworks (MOF) as core. In detail, redox cleavable di-(1-hydroxylundecyl) selenide (DH-Se), biocompatible poly(ethylene glycol) (PEG), and poly(propylene glycol) (PPG) are randomly polymerized to form poly(DH-Se/PEG/PPG urethane), which is used to coat the reactive oxygen species' (ROS) producible porous porphyrin zirconium metal organization formulation (PCN-224 MOF) to form the final poly(DH-Se/PEG/PPG urethane)@MOF shell-core nanoparticle with spherical shape by emulsion approach. Interestingly, poly(DH-Se/PEG/PPG urethane)@MOF nanoparticles with loading of chemotherapeutic doxorubicin (DOX) experience a fast and controllable release, which can realize the combination of chemotherapy and photodynamic therapy upon irradiation with laser light, due to the light-triggered ROS production by MOF which further causes the cleavage of poly(DH-Se/PEG/PPG urethane) polymer chain and the release of encapsulated DOX. To the best of the authors' knowledge, this is the first design of utilizing MOF and selenium substituted polymer as controllable drug release carriers, which might be beneficial for precise chemotherapy and photodynamic therapy combination.

Abstract
Amplification strategies for low-level microRNA detection in living cells are pivotal for gene diagnosis and many cellular bioprocesses. In this work, we develop an amplification strategy for microRNA-21 (miRNA-21) imaging in living cells with MoS2-supported catassembly of DNA hairpins. The MoS2 nanosheet with low cytotoxicity serves as the nanocarrier and excellent fluorescence quencher, which can transfer fluorescent metastable hairpin DNA into the cells easily in a nondestructive manner and significantly reduce background signals. The three-branched catalyzed hairpin assembly (TB-CHA) probes contain three types of designed DNA molecular beacons with the modification of Cy3 in the terminal. In the presence of miRNA-21, the catalyzed hairpin assembly (CHA) reaction would be triggered and a "Y"-shaped three-branched duplex nanostructure would be formed, which would release from the surface of the MoS2 nanosheet due to the reduced affinity between the DNA duplex and MoS2 nanosheet. The multisite fluorescence modification and the circular reaction of TB-CHA probes allowed a significant fluorescence recovery in a live-cell microenvironment. The ultrasensitive detection of miRNA-21 is achieved with a detection limit of 75.6 aM, which is ∼5 orders of magnitude lower than that of a simple strand displacement-based strategy (detection limit: 8.5 pM). This method offers great opportunities for the ultrasensitive live-cell detection of miRNAs and helps in gaining a deeper understanding of the physiological functions of miRNAs in cancer research and life processes.

Abstract
Transcatheter arterial chemoembolization (TACE), aiming to block the hepatic artery for inhibiting tumor blood supply, became a popular therapy for hepatocellular carcinoma (HCC) patients. Traditional TACE formulation of anticancer drug emulsion in ethiodized oil (i.e., Lipiodol®) and gelatin sponge (i.e., Gelfoam®) had drawbacks on patient tolerance and resulted in undesired systemic toxicity, which were both significantly improved by polymeric beads, microparticles, or hydrogels by taking advantage of the elegant design of biocompatible or biodegradable polymers, especially amphiphilic polymers or polymers with both hydrophilic and hydrophobic chains, which could self-assemble into proposed microspheres or hydrogels. In this review, we aimed to summarize recent advances on polymeric embolization beads or hydrogels as TACE agents, with emphasis on their material basis of polymer architectures, which are important but have not yet been comprehensively summarized.

Abstract
Inorganic nanoparticles (NPs) exhibit relevant physical properties for application in biomedicine and specifically for both the diagnosis and therapy (i.e. theranostic) of severe pathologies, such as cancer. The inorganic NP core is often not stable in aqueous suspension and can induce cytotoxic effects. For this reason, over the years, several coating strategies were suggested to improve the NP stability in aqueous solutions as well as the NP biocompatibility. Among the various components which can be used for NP coatings, lipids, and in particular phospholipids emerged as versatile molecular building blocks for the production of NP coatings suitable for biomedical application. The recent synthetic efforts in NP lipid coatings allows today to introduce on the NP surface a large variety of lipid molecules eventually in mixture with amphiphilic or hydrophobic drugs or active molecules for cell targeting. In this review, the most relevant examples of NP lipid-coatings are presented and grouped in two main categories: supported lipid bilayers (SLB) and hybrid lipid bilayers (HLB). The discussed scientific cases take into account the most commonly used inorganic NP for biomedical applications in cancer therapy and diagnosis.

On-Demand Detaching Nanosystem for the Spatiotemporal Control of Cancer Theranostics. ACS APPLIED MATERIALS & INTERFACES 2019; 11:16285-16295. Abstract
Engineering multiple theranostic modalities into a single nanoscale entity holds great potential to rejuvenate cancer treatments; however, enabling the sophisticated spatiotemporal control of each component for maximizing theranostic improvement and minimizing side effects concurrently remains a challenge. Herein, an intelligent detachable "nanorocket" is developed to sequentially manipulate and optimize multitheranostic processes for magnetic resonance-assisted ultrasound-drug combined therapy (MR-HIFU-Drug). The "nanorocket" is constructed by integrating multicomponent (MnCO3, doxorubicin, silica) on the pH-sensitive CaCO3 nanoparticles step by step via cation exchange and controlled heterogeneous nucleation, in which doxorubicin is encapsulated in both carbonates and silica component. The "nanorocket" can initiate sequential detachment in the acidic tumor microenvironment. Specifically, carbonates decompose instantly, releasing Mn2+ as the MR contrast agent and leaving hollow silica nanostructure behind as the HIFU synergistic agent. Consequently, burst release of drug is also triggered, further triggering the degradation of silica, which in turn regulates the slow release of drug from the silica matrix. Thus, efficient tumor inhibition is achieved by enhanced HIFU ablation and biphase release of doxorubicin with a stepwise clearance of Mn and Si. This work establishes a system for the systematic spatiotemporal dispatch of diverse theranostic components for the balance of efficacy and safety in cancer theranostics.

A Facile One-Step Approach for Constructing Multidimensional Ordered Nanowire Micropatterns via Fibrous Elastocapillary Coalescence. ADVANCED MATERIALS (DEERFIELD BEACH, FLA.) 2019; 31:e1900534. Abstract
Nanowire (NW) based micropatterns have attracted research interests for their applications in electric microdevices. Particularly, aligning NWs represents an important process due to the as-generated integrated physicochemical advantages. Here, a facile and general strategy is developed to align NWs using fibrous elastocapillary coalescence of carbon nanotube arrays (ACNTs), which enables constructing multidimensional ordered NW micropatterns in one step without any external energy input. It is proposed that the liquid film of NW solution is capable of shrinking unidirectionally on the top of ACNTs, driven by the dewetting-induced elastocapillary coalescence of the ACNTs. Consequently, the randomly distributed NWs individually rotate and move into dense alignment. Meanwhile, the aggregating and bundling of ACNTs is helpful to produce carbon nanotube (CNT) yarns connecting neighboring bundles. Thus, a micropatterned NW network composed of a top-layer of horizontally aligned NWs and an under-layer of vertical ACNT bundles connected by CNT yarns is prepared, showing excellent performance in sensing external pressure with a sensitivity of 0.32 kPa-1 . Moreover, the aligned NWs can be transferred onto various substrates for constructing electronic circuits. The strategy is applicable for aligning various NWs of Ag, ZnO, Al2 O3 , and even living microbes. The result may offer new inspiration for fabricating NW-based functional micropatterns.

Abstract
Engineering inorganic nanoparticles with a biocompatible shell to improve their physicochemical properties is a vital step in taking advantage of their superior magnetic, optical, and photothermal properties as multifunctional molecular imaging probes for disease diagnosis and treatment. The grafting/peeling-off strategy we developed for nanoparticle surface coating can fully control the targeting capability of functional nanoprobes by changing their colloidal behaviors such as diffusion and sedimentation rates at the desired sites. We demonstrated that a cleavable coating layer initially immobilized on the surface of magnetic resonance imaging probes not only makes the nanoparticles water-soluble but also can be selectively removed by specific enzymes, thereby resulting in a significant decrease of their water solubility in an enzyme-rich environment. Upon removal of surface coating, the changes in hydrodynamic size and surface charges of nanoprobes as a result of interacting with biomolecules and proteins lead to dramatic changes in their in vivo colloidal behaviors ( i. e., slow diffusion rates, tendency to aggregate and precipitate), which were quantitatively evaluated by examining changes in their hydrodynamic sizes, magnetic properties, and count rates during the size measurement. Because the retention time of nanoprobes within the tumor tissues depends on the uptake and excretion rate of the nanoprobes through the tumors, selective activation of nanoprobes by a specific enzyme resulted in much higher tumor accumulation and longer retention time within the tumors than that of the inactive nanoprobes, which passively passed through the tumors. The imaging contrast effect of tumors using activatable nanoprobes was significantly improved over using inactive probes. Therefore, the grafting/peeling-off strategy, as a general design approach for surface modification of nanoprobes, offers a promising and highly efficient way to render the nanoparticles suitable for targeted imaging of tumors.

Abstract
Molecular diagnostics relies on the efficient extraction of biomarker information from the given bio-systems. Plasmonic nanomaterials with tailored structural parameters are promising for the development of biomarker assays due to enrichment effect and signal enhancement. Herein, we overview the recent progress on the development of plasmonic nanomaterials for diagnostic spectrometry, encompassing the interface, mechanism, and application of these materials. For interface, we summarized the types of plasmonic nanomaterials used as interfaces between different materials and light. For mechanism, we descirbe the key parameters (e.g., hot carriers and heat) that characterize the plasmonic effect of materials. For application, we highlighted recent advances in matrix assisted laser desorption/ionization mass spectrometry (MALDI MS) and surface enhanced Raman spectroscopy (SERS) toward precision in in vitro and in vivo diagnostics. We foresee the upcoming era of precision diagnostics by nano-assisted spectrometry methods in both academy and industry, which will require the interest and effort of scientists with diverse backgrounds.
