Strategies for Improving the Functionality of Zeolitic Imidazolate Frameworks: Tailoring Nanoarchitectures for Functional Applications

One-pot green synthesis of ZIF-8/IgG composite for the precise orientation and protection of antibody and its application in purification and detection of aflatoxins in peanut oil

This study presents a novel approach toward the one-pot green synthesis of ZIF-8/IgG composite, focusing on its precise orientation and protection of the anti-aflatoxins antibody. The antibody orientation is achieved through the specific binding of IgG to the Fc region of the antibody, while the antibody protection is accomplished by the structural change restriction of ZIF-8 framework to the antibody. Consequently, the antibody exhibits enhanced target capability and significantly improved tolerance to organic solvents. The ZIF-8/IgG/anti-AFT was employed for the purification and detection of AFTs by coupling with UPLC. Under optimized conditions, the recoveries of spiked AFTs in peanut oils are between 86.1% and 106.4%, with relative standard deviations (RSDs) ranging from 0.8% to 8.8%. The linearity range is 0.5-20.0 ng for AFB1 and AFG1, 0.125-5.0 ng for AFB2 and AFG2, the limit of detection is 0.1 ng for AFB1 and AFG1, 0.03 ng for AFB2 and AFG2.

Use of a pH-responsive imatinib mesylate sustained-release hydrogel for the treatment of tendon adhesion by inhibiting PDGFRβ/CLDN1 pathway

Adhesion after tendon injury, which can result in limb movement disorders, is a common clinical complication; however, effective treatment methods are lacking. Hyaluronic acid hydrogels are a new biomedical material used to prevent tendon adhesion owing to their good biocompatibility. In addition, potential drugs that inhibit adhesion formation have gradually been discovered. The anti-adhesion effects of a combination of loaded drugs into hydrogels have become an emerging trend. However, current drug delivery systems usually lack specific regulation of drug release, and the effectiveness of drugs for treating tendon adhesions is mostly flawed. In this study, we identified a new drug, imatinib mesylate (IM), that prevents tendon adhesion and explored its related molecular pathways. In addition, we designed a pH-responsive sustained-release hydrogel for delivery. Using the metal-organic framework ZIF-8 as a drug carrier, we achieved controlled drug release to increase the effective drug dose at the peak of adhesion formation to achieve better therapeutic effects. The results showed that IM blocked the formation of peritendon adhesions by inhibiting the PDGFRβ/ERK/STAT3/CLDN1 pathway. Furthermore, the hydrogel with ZIF-8 exhibited better physical properties and drug release curves than the hydrogel loaded only with drugs, showing better prevention and treatment effects on tendon adhesion.

Recent advances and synergistic effect of bioactive zeolite imidazolate frameworks (ZIFs) for biosensing applications

The rapid developments in the field of zeolitic imidazolate frameworks (ZIFs) in recent years have created unparalleled opportunities for the development of unique bioactive ZIFs for a range of biosensor applications. Integrating bioactive molecules such as DNA, aptamers, and antibodies into ZIFs to create bioactive ZIF composites has attracted great interest. Bioactive ZIF composites have been developed that combine the multiple functions of bioactive molecules with the superior chemical and physical properties of ZIFs. This review thoroughly summarizes the ZIFs as well as the novel strategies for incorporating bioactive molecules into ZIFs. They are used in many different applications, especially in biosensors. Finally, biosensor applications of bioactive ZIFs were investigated in optical (fluorescence and colorimetric) and electrochemical (amperometric, conductometric, and impedance) fields. The surface of ZIFs makes it easier to immobilize bioactive molecules like DNA, enzymes, or antibodies, which in turn enables the construction of cutting-edge, futuristic biosensors.

Application of dual chemotherapeutic drug delivery system based on metal-organic framework platform in enhancing tumor regression for breast cancer research

The nanomedicine system based on dual drug delivery systems (DDDs) can significantly enhance the efficacy of tumor treatment. Herein, a metal-organic framework, Zeolite imidazole salt frames 8 (ZIF-8), was successfully utilized as a carrier to load the dual chemotherapeutic drugs doxorubicin (DOX) and camptothecin (CPT), named DOX/CPT@ZIF-8 (denoted as DCZ), and their inhibitory effects on 4T1 breast cancer cells were evaluated. The study experimentally demonstrated the synergistic effects of the dual chemotherapeutic drugs within the ZIF-8 carrier and showed that the ZIF-8 nano-carrier loaded with the dual drugs exhibited stronger cytotoxicity and inhibitory effects on 4T1 breast cancer cells compared to single-drug treatment. The use of a ZIF-8-based dual chemotherapeutic drug carrier system highlighted its potential advantages in suppressing 4T1 breast cancer cells.

Drug carrier wonders: Synthetic strategies of zeolitic imidazolates frameworks (ZIFs) and their applications in drug delivery and anti-cancer activity

With the rapid advancement of nanotechnology, stimuli-responsive nanomaterials have emerged as a feasible choice for the designing of controlled drug delivery systems. Zeolitic imidazolates frameworks are a subclass of Metal-organic frameworks (MOFs) that are recognized by their excellent porosity, structural tunability and chemical modifications make them promising materials for loading targeted molecules and therapeutics agents. The biomedical industry uses these porous materials extensively as nano-carriers in drug delivery systems. These MOFs not only possess excellent targeted imaging ability but also cause the death of tumor cells drawing considerable attention in the current framework of anticancer drug delivery systems. In this review, the outline of stability, porosity, mechanism of encapsulation and release of anticancer drug have been reported extensively. In the end, we also discuss a brief outline of current challenges and future perspectives of ZIFs in the biomedical world.

Zeolitic imidazolate frameworks (ZIFs): Advanced nanostructured materials to enhance the functional performance of food packaging materials

Zeolite imidazole framework (ZIF) materials are a class of metallic organic framework (MOF) materials that have several potential applications in the food and other industries. They consist of metal ions or clusters of metal ions coordinated with imidazole-based organic linkers, creating a three-dimensional solid structure with well-defined pores and channels. ZIFs possess several important features, including high porosity, tunable pore sizes, high surface areas, adjustable surface chemistries, and good stabilities. These characteristics make them highly versatile materials that can be used in a variety of applications, including smart and active food packaging. Based on their controllable compositions, dimensions, and pore sizes, the properties of ZIFs can be tailored for a diverse range of applications, including energy storage, sensing, separation, encapsulation, and catalysis. In this article, we focus on recent progress and potential applications of ZIFs in food packaging materials. Previous studies have shown that ZIFs can significantly improve the optical, mechanical, barrier, thermal, sustainability, and preservative properties of packaging materials. Moreover, ZIFs can be used as carriers to encapsulate, protect, and control the release of bioactive agents in packaging materials. ZIFs are capable of selectively adsorbing and releasing molecules based on their size, shape, and surface properties. These unique characteristics make them particularly suitable for smart or active food packaging applications. By selectively removing gases (such as oxygen, carbon dioxide, water, or ethylene) ZIFs can improve the shelf life and quality of packaged foods. In addition, they can be employed to control the growth of spoilage microorganisms and minimize oxidation reactions, thereby enhancing the freshness and extending the shelf life of foods. They may also be used to create sensors capable of detecting and indicating food spoilage. For instance, ZIFs that change color or release specific compounds when spoilage products are present can provide visual or chemical indications of food deterioration. This feature is especially valuable in ensuring the safety and quality of packaged food, as it enables consumers and retailers to easily identify spoiled products. ZIFs can be functionalized using various additives, including antioxidants, antimicrobials, pigments, and flavors, which can improve the preservative and sensory properties of packaged foods. Moreover, ZIF-based packaging materials offer sustainability benefits. Unlike traditional plastic packaging, ZIFs are biodegradable and can easily be disposed of without causing harm to the environment, thereby reducing the adverse effects of plastic waste materials. The application of ZIFs in smart/active food packaging offers exciting possibilities for enhancing the shelf life, quality, and safety of foods. With further research and development, ZIF-based packaging could become a sustainable alternative to plastic-based packaging in the food industry. An important aim of this review article is to stimulate further research on the development and application of ZIFs within food packaging materials.

Recent progress in lactate oxidase-based drug delivery systems for enhanced cancer therapy

Lactate oxidase (LOX) is a natural enzyme that efficiently consumes lactate. In the presence of oxygen, LOX can catalyse the formation of pyruvate and hydrogen peroxide (H2O2) from lactate. This process led to acidity alleviation, hypoxia, and a further increase in oxidative stress, alleviating the immunosuppressive state of the tumour microenvironment (TME). However, the high cost of LOX preparation and purification, poor stability, and systemic toxicity limited its application in tumour therapy. Therefore, the rational application of drug delivery systems can protect LOX from the organism's environment and maintain its catalytic activity. This paper reviews various LOX-based drug-carrying systems, including inorganic nanocarriers, organic nanocarriers, and inorganic-organic hybrid nanocarriers, as well as other non-nanocarriers, which have been used for tumour therapy in recent years. In addition, this area's challenges and potential for the future are highlighted.

Spatiotemporally controlled AuNPs@ZIF-8 based nanocarriers for synergistic photothermal/chemodynamic therapy

High efficiency and spatio-temporal control remains a challenge for multi-modal synergistic cancer therapy. Herein, based on gold nanoparticles (AuNPs) and zeolite-like imidazole skeleton material (ZIF-8), a spatio-temporal controllable photothermal/ chemical dynamic/ chemotherapy three modal synergistic anti-tumor nano-carrier (HAZD) was developed. HAZD has a size of 128.75 ± 11.86 nm, a drug loading ratio of 21.5 ± 2.2 % and an encapsulation efficiency of 71.8 ± 1.7 %. Stability, acid responsive release character, outstanding catalytic ability to generate ROS, relatively high thermal conversion efficiency up to 62.38 % and spatio-temporal controllable abilities are also found within this nano-carrier. Furthermore, HAZD performed good antitumor ability in vivo with the comprehensive effects of photothermal/ chemical dynamic/ chemotherapy. The tumor growth inhibition value is 97.1 % within 12 days, indicating its great potential in multi-modal synergistic cancer therapy. STATEMENT OF SIGNIFICANCE: Cancer remains one of the major culprits that seriously harm human health currently. With the development of materials and nanotechnology, great improvements have been made in multimodal anti-tumor strategies. However, temporal- and spatial-controllable multi-modal synergistic nanocarriers are urgently awaited for efficient and low-toxicity tumor therapy. This article proposes a spatio-temporally controllable three-modal anti-tumor strategy and designs an anti-tumor drug delivery system based on gold nanoparticles (AuNPs) and zeolite-like imidazole skeleton material (ZIF-8), which shows acid-responsive release characteristics, catalytic ability to generate ROS, relatively high thermal conversion efficiency up to 62.38 %, as well as spatio-temporal controllable abilities. Moreover, it demonstrates outstanding anti-tumor ability, with a tumor growth inhibition value of 97.1 % within 12 days, revealing its significant potential for future personalized and precise anti-tumor treatments.

Synthesis of millimeter-scale ZIF-8 single crystals and their reversible crystal structure changes

Among various metal-organic frameworks (MOFs), the zeolitic imidazole framework (ZIF), constructed by the regular arrangement of 2-methylimidazole and metal ions, has garnered significant attention due to its distinctive crystals and pore structures. Variations in the sizes and shapes of ZIF crystals have been reported by changing the synthesis parameters, such as the molar ratios of organic ligands to metal ions, choice of solvents, and temperatures. Nonetheless, the giant ZIF-8 single crystals beyond the typical range have rarely been reported. Herein, we present the synthesis of millimeter-scale single crystal ZIF-8 using the solvothermal method in N,N-diethylformamide. The resulting 1-mm single crystal is carefully characterized through N2 adsorption-desorption isotherms, scanning electron microscopy, and other analytical techniques. Additionally, single-crystal X-ray diffraction is employed to comprehensively investigate the framework's mobility at various temperatures.

Nanoleaf-derived carbon materials as a sensitivity coating for solid‑phase microextraction of polycyclic aromatic hydrocarbons

Metal-organic framework-derived carbon materials have shown extensive application in the sensitive extraction of polycyclic aromatic hydrocarbons (PAHs), but more active sites for its adsorption were still a tireless pursuit. In this study, ZIF-nanoleaf-derived carbon (NLCs) was synthesized and developed as a solid-phase microextraction (SPME) fiber (NLCs-F). The extraction performance was compared with ZIF-dodecahedron-derived carbon (DHCs) coated fiber (DHCs-F), which was prepared by only changing the ratio of the reactants. The unique morphology of NLCs provided abundant adsorption active sites for the selected PAHs, while the large average aperture facilitated selective extraction of high molecular weight analytes. Additionally, the high carbon content enhanced the strong enrichment capability for hydrophobic PAHs. Hence, the prepared NLCs-F coupled with GC-MS showed a good correlation coefficient (0.9975) in a wide linear range, low limits of detection (0.3-1.8 ng L-1), satisfactory repeatability, and reproducibility, which made it apply in the enrichment of PAHs in actual tea and coffee samples.

Statistically and visually analyzing the latest advancements and future trends of uranium removal

Uranium contamination and remediation is a very important environmental research area. Removing radioactive and toxic uranium from contaminated media requires fundamental knowledge of targets and materials. To explore the-State-of-the-Art in uranium contamination control, we employed a statistical tool called CiteSpace to visualize and statistically analyze 4203 peer-reviewed papers on uranium treatment published between 2008 and 2022. The primary content presentations of visual analysis were co-authorships, co-citations, keyword co-occurrence analysis with cluster analysis, which could offer purposeful information of research hots and trends in the field of uranium removal. The statistical analysis results indicated that studies on uranium removal have focused on adsorption of uranium from aqueous solution. From 2008 to 2022, biochar and biological treatment were firstly used to sequester uranium, then adsorption for uranium removal dominates with adsorbents of graphene oxide, primary nanofiber magnetic polymers and metal-organic frameworks (MOFs). In recent years, photocatalysts and metal-organic frameworks are expected to be two of the most popular research topics. In addition, we further highlighted the characteristics and applications of MOFs and GOs in uranium removal. Overall, a statistical review was proposed to visualize and summarize the knowledge and research trends regarding uranium treatment.

Current status and prospect of ZIF-based materials for breast cancer treatment

Breast cancer, one of the three most life-threatening cancers in modern times, must be explored for treatments with low side effects and practical efficacy. Metal organic framework materials (MOFs) is made by metal ions as the center for point and organic ligands as a bridge connecting a new type of porous nano-materials, among them, the zinc base zeolite imidazole skeleton material series (ZIFs) because of its excellent biocompatibility and pH slow controlled release ability, is widely used in the tumor microenvironment in basic research and achieved remarkable curative effect. Inspired by this, in this review, we focus on the recent research progress on the application of ZIFs in the treatment of breast cancer, mainly studying the structure of ZIFs such as ZIF-8, ZIF-90 and ZIF-67 and their application in novel therapies for breast cancer treatment, such as targeted drug delivery, photothermal therapy, immunotherapy and gene therapy.We will more fully demonstrate the potential of zif in breast cancer treatment, hoping to provide an avenue for exploring breast cancer treatment.

In Situ Generated Dye@MOF/COF Heterostructure for Fluorescence Detection of Chloroquine Phosphate and Folic Acid via Different Luminescent Channels

Metal-organic framework (MOF) and covalent-organic framework (COF) hybrid materials can combine the unique properties of MOF and COF components, and their applications in fluorescence sensing have attracted more and more attention. Herein, ZIF-90 is grown on 3D-COF by a simple in situ growing method in which the 7-amino-4-methylcoumarin (AMC) is encapsulated in ZIF-90 to construct a fluorescent sensor. Chloroquine phosphate (CQP) can coordinate with Zn2+ to decompose the ZIF-90 and release AMC. At 365 nm excitation, the ratiometric fluorescence signal AMC/3D-COF (I430/I598) increases linearly with CQP in a linear range of 4 × 10-5 to 4 × 10-4 M in urine. Under 340 nm excitation, quantitative analysis of CQP in the serum (3 × 10-6 to 4 × 10-5 M) is based on the fluorescence intensity of Zn-CQP/3D-COF (I384/I598). In addition, AMC@ZIF-90/3D-COF (1) exhibits high anti-interference and selectivity in sensing of FA with a "turn off" mode, with a correlation range of 1 × 10-5 to 1 × 10-3 M. The fluorescence color changes triggered by CQP under different excitation conditions, and the different fluorescence responses caused by CQP make it a highly secure anticounterfeiting platform. The synthesized dye@MOF/COF hybrids not only provide a new way to integrate multiple emission to design fluorescent probes for differentiation detection but also offer ideas for the design of anticounterfeiting platforms.

Electrocatalytic Microdevice Array Based on Wafer-Scale Conductive Metal-Organic Framework Thin Film for Massive Hydrogen Production

The synthesis of large-scale 2D conductive metal-organic framework films with tunable thickness is highly desirable but challenging. In this study, an Interface Confinement Self-Assembly Pulling (ICSP) method for in situ synthesis of 4-in. Ni-BHT film on the substrate surface is developed. By modulating the thickness of the confined space, the thickness of Ni-BHT films could be easily varied from 4 to 42 nm. To eliminate interference factors and evaluate the effect of film thickness on the catalytic performance of HER, an electrocatalytic microdevice based on the Ni-BHT film is designed. The effective catalytic thickness of the Ni-BHT film is found to be around 32 nm. Finally, to prepare the electrocatalytic microdevice array, over 100 000 microdevices on a 4-in. Ni-BHT film are integrated. The results show that the microdevice array has good stability and a high hydrogen production rate and could be used to produce large amounts of hydrogen. The wafer-scale 2D conductive metal-organic framework's fabrication greatly advances the practical application of microdevices for massive hydrogen production.

Bimetallic Cu-Zn Zeolitic Imidazolate Frameworks as Peroxidase Mimics for the Detection of Hydrogen Peroxide: Electrochemical and Spectrophotometric Evaluation

A copper incorporated zeolitic imidazolate framework-8 (ZIF-8) has been synthesized and demonstrated to be a potential material for a peroxidase mimic. The resultant bimetallic Cu-Zn incorporated MOF is used for the dual mode sensing of hydrogen peroxide by following electrochemical as well as spectrophotometric methods. Using 3,3',5,5'-tetramethylbenzidine (TMB) as a chromogenic substrate, spectrophotometric studies are carried out, and the steady state kinetic parameters are determined for two different concentrations of Cu incorporated ZIF-8 (viz Cu@ZIF-8-1 and Cu@ZIF-8-2). It is found that both Cu@ZIF-8-1 and Cu@ZIF-8-2 exhibit more affinity toward the TMB substrate than the horseradish peroxidase (HRP) enzyme as indicated by the low Km values obtained for the substrate. Also, as the concentration of incorporated Cu increases, Vmax values are also found to be enhanced. Electrochemically, the Cu@ZIF-8 modified glassy carbon electrode (GCE) showed a good response for peroxide detection in the concentration range from 0.5 mM to 5 mM at a working potential of -0.25 V in PBS (pH 7.0) with a limit of detection (LOD) value of 0.46 mM and a sensitivity of 20.25 μA/mM. Further, the chromogenic substrate TMB is successfully immobilized on the electrode surface and subsequently used for the peroxide detection along with Cu@ZIF-8. Here, TMB acts as a mediator and shifted the working potential to 0.1 V in acetate buffer (pH 5.0) in the concentration range from 0.5 mM to 5 mM with an LOD value of 0.499 mM and a sensitivity of 0.097 μA/mM. Interestingly, the same electrode in PBS of pH 7.0 showed a response to peroxide at a working potential of -0.1 V in the concentration range from 0.5 mM to 5 mM with an LOD value of 0.143 mM and a sensitivity of 0.33 μA/mM. Moreover, the applicability of this material for peroxide sensing is evaluated using milk samples, and the proposed material is able to recover the peroxide present in milk. Thus, the bimetallic Cu-Zn MOF can be utilized for the dual mode sensing of peroxide and can be extended for various real time applications.

Flower-like porous BCN assembled by nanosheets for paclitaxel delivery

Developing smart drug delivery systems has become a feasible solution to overcome the challenges in cancer chemotherapeutics. In this work, porous boron carbon nitride (ZBCN) nanomaterials with flower-like structures assembled with BCN nanosheets were synthesized by using ZIF-L as a template. The rich hydroxyl groups on the BCN surfaces make it highly dispersible and stable in aqueous solutions. Additionally, ZBCN exhibits stable photoluminescence properties that can be utilized for cellular uptake and tracking of drug delivery. Furthermore, the flower-like ZBCN structure contributes to a large specific surface area of up to 340 m2 g-1 and a pore volume of 1.03 cm3 g-1; and the presence of rich macropores results in a high drug loading capacity of 116 wt% for paclitaxel. In vitro and in vivo anticancer experiments demonstrated that ZBCN exhibits excellent performance in delivering anticancer drugs, with in vivo tumor inhibition of 58%. This study presents a novel template method for preparing porous BCN nanomaterials, offering a promising platform for high-performance anticancer drug delivery.

Antibacterial and antibiofilm activities of ZIF-67

Currently, antibiotic-resistant bacteria represent a serious threat to public health worldwide. Biofilm formation potentiates both virulence and antibiotic resistance of bacteria. Therefore, the discovery of new antibacterial and antibiofilm compounds is an issue of paramount importance to combat and prevent hard-to-treat bacterial infections. Zeolitic-imidazolate-frameworks (ZIFs) are metallo-organic compounds known to have various interesting chemical and biological applications, including antibacterial properties. In this study, we synthesized ZIF-67 nanoparticles, formed by imidazolate anions and cobalt cations, and found that they inhibit the growth of Acinetobacter baumannii, Pseudomonas aeruginosa, and Staphylococcus aureus. Sub-inhibitory concentrations of ZIF-67 were also able to significantly reduce the biomass of pre-established biofilms of these pathogenic bacteria. On the other hand, the ZIF-67 nanoparticles had null or low cytotoxicity in mammalian cells at those concentrations showing antibacterial or antibiofilm activities. Thus, our results reveal the potential of ZIF-67 nanoparticles to be used against pathogenic bacteria.

Application of Pt@ZIF-8 nanocomposite-based electrochemical biosensor for sensitive diagnosis of tau protein in Alzheimer's disease patients

Alzheimer's disease (AD) is a progressive brain disorder characterized by the ongoing decline of brain functions. Studies have revealed the detrimental effects of hyperphosphorylated tau (p-tau) protein fibrils in AD pathogenesis, highlighting the importance of this factor in the early-stage detection of AD conditions. We designed an electrochemical immunosensor for quantitative detection of the cis conformation of the p-tau protein (cis-p-tau) employing platinum nanoparticles (Pt NPs) supported on zeolitic imidazolate frameworks (ZIF) for modifying the glassy carbon electrode (GCE) surface. Under optimum conditions, the immunosensor selectively and sensitively detected cis-p-tau within the broad linear range of 1 fg mL-1 to 10 ng mL-1 and the low limit of detection (LOD) of 1 fg mL-1 with desired reproducibility and stability. Furthermore, the fabricated immunosensor's performance was examined for the cis-p-tau analysis in the serum of AD patients, indicating its accuracy and feasibility for real-sample analysis. Notably, this is the first application of Pt@ZIF-8 nanocomposite in fabricating a valid immunosensor for selective cis-p-tau detection, even in the presence of trans-p-tau. It is worth mentioning that the enzyme-linked immunosorbent assay (ELISA) reference technique is not able to evaluate pico- or femtomolar concentrations of cis-p-tau, making the fabricated immunosensor superior for early-stage measurement and screening of AD.

Coarse-grained versus fully atomistic machine learning for zeolitic imidazolate frameworks

Zeolitic imidazolate frameworks are widely thought of as being analogous to inorganic AB2 phases. We test the validity of this assumption by comparing simplified and fully atomistic machine-learning models for local environments in ZIFs. Our work addresses the central question to what extent chemical information can be "coarse-grained" in hybrid framework materials.

Metal-Organic Framework-Derived Mesoporous B-Doped CoO/Co@N-Doped Carbon Hybrid 3D Heterostructured Interfaces with Modulated Cobalt Oxidation States for Alkaline Water Splitting

Heteroatom-doped transition metal-oxides of high oxygen evolution reaction (OER) activities interfaced with metals of low hydrogen adsorption energy barrier for efficient hydrogen evolution reaction (HER) when uniformly embedded in a conductive nitrogen-doped carbon (NC) matrix, can mitigate the low-conductivity and high-agglomeration of metal-nanoparticles in carbon matrix and enhances their bifunctional activities. Thus, a 3D mesoporous heterostructure of boron (B)-doped cobalt-oxide/cobalt-metal nanohybrids embedded in NC and grown on a Ni foam substrate (B-CoO/Co@NC/NF) is developed as a binder-free bifunctional electrocatalyst for alkaline water-splitting via a post-synthetic modification of the metal-organic framework and subsequent annealing in different Ar/H2 gas ratios. B-CoO/Co@NC/NF prepared using 10% H2 gas (B-CoO/Co@NC/NF [10% H2 ]) shows the lowest HER overpotential (196 mV) and B-CoO/Co@NC/NF (Ar), developed in Ar, shows an OER overpotential of 307 mV at 10 mA cm-2 with excellent long-term durability for 100 h. The best anode and cathode electrocatalyst-based electrolyzer (B-CoO/Co@NC/NF (Ar)(+)//B-CoO/Co@NC/NF (10% H2 )(-)) generates a current density of 10 mA cm-2 with only 1.62 V with long-term stability. Further, density functional theory investigations demonstrate the effect of B-doping on electronic structure and reaction mechanism of the electrocatalysts for optimal interaction with reaction intermediates for efficient alkaline water-splitting which corroborates the experimental results.

Engineering Metal-Organic Frameworks with Tunable Colors for High-Performance Wireless Communication

Metal-organic frameworks (MOFs) have emerged as excellent platforms possessing tunable and controllable optical behaviors that are essential in high-speed and multichannel data transmission in optical wireless communications (OWCs). Here, we demonstrate a novel approach to achieving a tunable wide modulation bandwidth and high net data rate by engineering a combination of organic linkers and metal clusters in MOFs. More specifically, two organic linkers of different emission colors, but equal molecular length and connectivity, are successfully coordinated by zirconium and hafnium oxy-hydroxy clusters to form the desired MOF structures. The precise change in the interactions between these different organic linkers and metal clusters enables control over fluorescence efficiency and excited state lifetime, leading to a tunable modulation bandwidth from 62.1 to 150.0 MHz and a net data rate from 303 to 363 Mb/s. The fabricated color converter MOFs display outstanding performance that competes, and in some instances surpasses, those of conventional materials commonly used in light converter devices. Moreover, these MOFs show high practicality in color-pure wavelength-division multiplexing (WDM), which significantly improved the data transmission link capacity and security by the contemporary combining of two different data signals in the same path. This work highlights the potential of engineered MOFs as a game-changer in OWCs, with significant implications for future high-speed and secure data transmission.

Synthesis of Imidazole-Based Molecules under Ultrasonic Irradiation Approaches

Imidazole-based compounds are a series of heterocyclic compounds that exhibit a wide range of biological and pharmaceutical activities. However, those extant syntheses using conventional protocols can be time-costly, require harsh conditions, and result in low yields. As a novel and green technique, sonochemistry has emerged as a promising method for organic synthesis with several advantages over conventional methods, including enhancing reaction rates, improving yields, and reducing the use of hazardous solvents. Contemporarily, a growing body of ultrasound-assisted reactions have been applied in the preparation of imidazole derivatives, which demonstrated greater benefits and provided a new strategy. Herein, we introduce the brief history of sonochemistry and focus on the discussion of the multifarious approaches for the synthesis of imidazole-based compounds under ultrasonic irradiation and its advantages in comparison with conventional protocols, including typical name-reactions and various sorts of catalysts in those reactions.

Dual-targeting lanthanide-ICG-MOF nanoplatform for cancer Theranostics: NIR II luminescence imaging guided sentinel lymph nodes surgical navigation

Sentinel lymph node imaging is important for breast tumor staging and prediction of postoperative metastasis. However, clinical sentinel lymph node imaging has limitations such as low specificity, low contrast, and short retention time. The combination of bio-conjugates chemistry and luminescence technology may achieve the specific targeting effect. In this research, we designed a dual-targeting composite nanoprobe (∼50 nm) using a metal-organic framework (MOF) as carrier, loaded with lanthanide and ICG, and combined with hyaluronic acid and folic acid to detect metastatic lymph nodes. The coupled hyaluronic acid and folic acid can target to the tumor cells and dentritic cells with a dual-targeting effect. The FA-HA/ZIF-8@ICG nanoprobes can accumulate rapidly in sentinel lymph node with a stronger luminescence intensity (1.6 times) than that of normal popliteal lymph nodes in vivo, thus distinguish metastatic sentinel lymph node from normal effectively. Furthermore, due to the MOF carrier, the integrated lanthanide and near-infrared dye by transferring the absorbed excitation energy from ICG to Nd³⁺ can enhance the signal-to-background ratio of NIR II imaging and have long retention time in vivo imaging. Finally, the FA-HA/ICG@Ln@ZIF-8 nanoplatform increased the penetration depth and contrast of imaging, prolonged the retention time, and achieved the sentinel lymph nodes surgical resection. This study has important implications for lymph node imaging and surgical navigation.

Dye encapsulation and one-pot synthesis of microporous-mesoporous zeolitic imidazolate frameworks for CO2 sorption and adenosine triphosphate biosensing

One-pot co-precipitation of target molecules e.g. organic dyes and the synthesis of a crystal containing microporous-mesoporous regimes of zeolitic imidazolate frameworks-8 (ZIF-8) are reported. The synthesis method can be used for cationic (rhodamine B (RhB), methylene blue (MB)), and anionic (methyl blue (MeB)) dyes. The crystal growth of the ZIF-8 crystals takes place via an intermediate phase of zinc hydroxyl nitrate (Zn₅(OH)₈(NO₃)₂) nanosheets that enabled the adsorption of the target molecules i.e., RhB, MB, and MeB into their layers. The dye molecules play a role during crystal formation. The successful encapsulation of the dye molecules was proved via diffuse reflectance spectroscopy (DRS) and electrochemical measurements e.g., cyclic voltammetry (CV), linear sweep voltammetry (LSV), and electrochemical impedance spectroscopy (EIS). The materials were investigated for carbon dioxide (CO₂) adsorption and adenosine triphosphate (ATP) biosensing. ZIF-8, RhB@ZIF-8, MB@ZIF-8, and MeB@ZIF-8 offered CO₂ adsorption capacities of 0.80, 0.84, 0.85, and 0.53 mmol g^-1, respectively. The encapsulated cationic molecules improved the adsorption performance compared to anionic molecules inside the crystal. The materials were also tested as a fluorescent probe for ATP biosensing. The simple synthesis procedure offered new materials with tunable surface properties and the potential for multi-functional applications.

Near-Infrared Fluorescent Nanoprobes for Adenosine Triphosphate-Guided Imaging in Cancer and Fatty Liver Mice

Adenosine triphosphate (ATP), as an indispensable biomolecule, is the main energy source of cells and is used as a marker for diseases such as cancer and fatty liver. It is of great significance to design a near-infrared fluorescent nanoprobe with excellent performance and apply it to various disease models. Here, a near-infrared fluorescent nanoprobe (ZIF-90@SiR) based on a zeolitic imidazole framework is proposed. The fluorescent nanoprobes are synthesized by encapsulating the dye (SiR) into the framework of ZIF-90. Upon the addition of ATP, the structure of the ZIF-90@SiR nanoprobe is disrupted and SiR is released to generate near-infrared fluorescence at 670 nm. In the process of ATP detection, ZIF-90@SiR shows high sensitivity and good selectivity. Moreover, the ZIF-90@SiR nanoprobe has good biocompatibility due to its low toxicity to cells. It is used for fluorescence imaging of ATP in living cells and thus distinguishing normal cells and cancer cells, as well as distinguishing fatty liver cells. Due to excellent near-infrared fluorescence properties, the ZIF-90@SiR nanoprobe can not only distinguish normal mice and tumor mice but also differentiate normal mice and fatty liver mice for the first time.

Co-MOFs as Emerging Pulse Modulators for Femtosecond Ultrafast Fiber Laser

The metal organic framework (MOF) has attracted more and more attention due to its unique morphology, functional linkers, and orderly network structure. Zeolitio imidazolata frameworks (ZIFs), which are formed by bivalent transition metals (Zn, Co, etc.) and nitrogen-containing heterocyclic imidazole or purine organic ligands, are a very attractive subclass of MOFs. ZIF-67, obtained by the nucleation growth of dimethylimidazole and Co 2p, has been developed as a precursor for porous nanostructured cobalt-based metal oxides. During material preparation we add rGO because it can be used as a basic element to construct macroscopic three-dimensional carbon structural materials, which self-assemble into a 3D network structure with ZIF-67 through simple van der Waals forces or hydrogen bonds, and some samples contain specific functional groups that are added to the precursor. In this paper, we employ liquid-phase synthesis to generate rGO-ZIF-67 and calcine it at the temperature of 350 °C to obtain rGO-Co₃O₄. Then we fabricate rGO-Co₃O₄ and rGO-ZIF-67 modulators based on microfibers and test their nonlinear optical absorption in 1.5 μm range. The modulation depths of rGO-Co₃O₄ and rGO-ZIF-67 are measured as 10.41% and 6.61%, respectively. By using microfiber-based rGO-Co₃O₄ modulator, we have obtained a conventional soliton and a soliton molecule in Er³⁺-doped fiber lasers. The conventional soliton has a pulse width of 793.4 fs and a spectral width of 3.3 at 1558.9 nm, respectively. The obtained soliton molecule has a spectral modulation period of 1.65 nm and temporal separation of 4.94 ps at 1563.2 nm. By employing a microfiber-based rGO-ZIF-67 modulator, we obtain conventional solitons with a spectral width of 1.9 nm at the central wavelength of 1529.8 nm. Our research may expand the MOF-based materials for ultrafast photonics, blazing a new path for fiber laser, optical communications, and optoelectronics, etc.

Superstructures of Zeolitic Imidazolate Frameworks to Single- and Multiatom Sites for Electrochemical Energy Conversion

The exploration of electrocatalysts with high catalytic activity and long-term stability for electrochemical energy conversion is significant yet remains challenging. Zeolitic imidazolate framework (ZIF)-derived superstructures are a source of atomic-site-containing electrocatalysts. These atomic sites anchor the guest encapsulation and self-assembly of aspheric polyhedral particles produced using microreactor fabrication. This review provides an overview of ZIF-derived superstructures by highlighting some of the key structural types, such as open carbon cages, 1D superstructures, hollow structures, and the interconversion of superstructures. The fundamentals and representative structures are outlined to demonstrate the role of superstructures in the construction of materials with atomic sites, such as single- and dual-atom materials. Then, the roles of ZIF-derived single-atom sites for the electroreduction of CO₂ and electrochemical synthesis of H₂ O₂ are discussed, and their electrochemical performance for energy conversion is outlined. Finally, the perspective on advancing single- and dual-atom electrode-based electrochemical processes with enhanced redox activity and a low-impedance charge-transfer pathway for cathodes is provided. The challenges associated with ZIF-derived superstructures for electrochemical energy conversion are discussed.

Metal-Organic Frameworks as Intelligent Drug Nanocarriers for Cancer Therapy

Metal-organic frameworks (MOFs) are crystalline porous materials with periodic network structures formed by self-assembly of metal ions and organic ligands. Attributed to their tunable composition and pore size, ultrahigh surface area (1000-7000 m²/g) and pore volume (1.04-4.40 cm³/g), easy surface modification, appropriate physiological stability, etc., MOFs have been widely used in biomedical applications in the last two decades, especially for the delivery of bioactive agents. In the initial stage, MOFs were widely used to load small molecule drugs with ultra-high doses. Whereafter, more recent work has focused on the load of biomacromolecules, such as nucleic acids and proteins. Over the past years, we have devoted extensive effort to investigate the function of MOF materials for bioactive agent delivery. MOFs can be used not only as an intelligent nanocarrier to deliver or protect bioactive agents but also as an activator for their release or activation in response to the different microenvironments. Altogether, this review details the current progress of MOF materials for bioactive agent delivery and looks into their future development.

Coordinated single-molecule micelles: a self-template approach for preparing mesoporous doped carbons

Porous carbons prepared using a self-template approach inherit the pore features of template, but they exhibit almost no evenly dispersed mesopores, which is significant for diffusion-limited applications. Herein, N-doped hierarchically porous carbons (NHPCs) with uniform mesopores are prepared using a self-template method. The spherical single-molecule micelle of polystyrene-b-poly(4-vinyl pyridine) (PS-b-P4VP) is turned into a Zn²⁺-coordinated PS-b-P4VP micelle (CPM) by coordination of Zn²⁺ with the P4VP shell. Then, the self-template of the CPM is carbonized into a hollow carbon nanosphere. During carbonization, the PS core is decomposed to generate the central mesopore, whereas the Zn²⁺-coordinated P4VP shell is transformed into a carbonaceous shell. These even hollow carbon nanospheres aggregate to form uniformly mesoporous carbon lumps. Simultaneously, the coordinated Zn²⁺ of the CPM is reduced to metal zinc at high temperatures and then it is evaporated, thus creating numerous micropores in the carbonaceous shell. These NHPCs with uniform mesopores display a high specific surface area. As a demonstration in diffusion-limited applications, their catalytic performances for the oxygen reduction reaction (ORR) are investigated. Strikingly, NHPCs exhibit outstanding catalytic performances for the ORR. This self-template method paves a facile approach for preparing mesoporous carbons with high performances.

Immobilization of D-allulose 3-epimerase into magnetic metal-organic framework nanoparticles for efficient biocatalysis

D-allulose is a rare low-calorie sugar that has many fundamental biological functions. D-allulose 3-epimerase from Agrobacterium tumefaciens (AT-DAEase) catalyzes the conversion of D-fructose to D-allulose. The enzyme has attracted considerable attention because of its mild catalytic properties. However, the bioconversion efficiency and reusability of AT-DAEase limit its industrial application. Magnetic metal-organic frameworks (MOFs) have uniform pore sizes and large surface areas and can facilitate mass transport and enhance the capacity for enzyme immobilization. Here, we successfully encapsulated cobalt-type AT-DAEase into the cobalt-based magnetic MOF ZIF-67@Fe₃O₄ using a self-assembly strategy. We confirmed the immobilization of enzyme AT-DAEase and characterized the enzymatic properties of the MOF-immobilized AT-DAEase@ZIF-67@Fe₃O₄. The AT-DAEase@ZIF-67@Fe₃O₄ nanoparticles had higher catalytic activity (65.1 U mg^-1) and bioconversion ratio (38.1%) than the free AT-DAEase. The optimal conditions for maximum enzyme activity of the AT-DAEase@ZIF-67@Fe₃O₄ nanoparticles were 55 °C and pH 8.0, which were significantly higher than those of the free AT-DAEase (50 °C and pH 7.5). The AT-DAEase@ZIF-67@Fe₃O₄ nanoparticles displayed significantly improved thermal stability and excellent recycling performance, with 80% retention of enzyme activity at a temperature range of 45-70 °C and > 45% of its initial activity after eight cycles of enzyme use. The AT-DAEase@ZIF-67@Fe₃O₄ nanoparticles have great potential for large-scale industrial preparation of D-allulose by immobilizing cobalt-type AT-DAEase into magnetic MOF ZIF-67@Fe₃O₄.

3D Printing of Metal-Organic Framework-Based Ionogels: Wearable Sensors with Colorimetric and Mechanical Responses

Soft ionotronics are emerging materials as wearable sensors for monitoring physiological signals, sensing environmental hazards, and bridging the human-machine interface. However, the next generation of wearable sensors requires multiple sensing capabilities, mechanical toughness, and 3D printability. In this study, a metal-organic framework (MOF) and three-dimensional (3D) printing were integrated for the synthesis of a tough MOF-based ionogel (MIG) for colorimetric and mechanical sensing. The ink for 3D printing contained deep eutectic solvents (DESs), cellulose nanocrystals (CNCs), MOF crystals, and acrylamide. After printing, further photopolymerization resulted in a second covalently cross-linked poly(acrylamide) network and solidification of MIG. As a porphyrinic Zr-based MOF, MOF-525 served as a functional filler to provide sharp color changes when exposed to acidic compounds. Notably, MOF-525 crystals also provided another design space to tune the printability and mechanical strength of MIG. In addition, the printed MIG exhibited high stability in the air because of the low volatility of DESs. Thereafter, wearable auxetic materials comprising MIG with negative Poisson's ratios were prepared by 3D printing for the detection of mechanical deformation. The resulting auxetic sensor exhibited high sensitivity via the change in resistance upon mechanical deformation and a conformal contact with skins to monitor various human body movements. These results demonstrate a facile strategy for the construction of multifunctional sensors and the shaping of MOF-based composite materials.

ZIF-X (8, 67) based nanostructures for gas-sensing applications

ZIF-8 and ZIF-67 are the most investigated zeolitic imidazolate frameworks (ZIFs) materials that have aroused enormous scientific interests in numerous areas of application including electrochemistry, gas storage, separation, and sensors by reason of their fascinating structural properties. Recently, there is a rapidly growing demand for chemical gas sensors for the detection of various analytes in widespread applications including environmental pollution monitoring, clinical analysis, wastewater analysis, industrial applications, food quality, consumer products, and automobiles. In general, the key to the development of superior gas sensors is exploring innovative sensing materials. ZIF-X (8, 67) based nanostructures have demonstrated great potential as ideal sensing materials for high-performance sensing applications. In this review, the general properties and applications of ZIF-X (8, 67) including gas storage and gas adsorption are first summarized, and then the recent progress of ZIF-X (8, 67) based nanostructures for gas-sensing applications and the structure-property correlations are summarized and analyzed.

Potential Applications of Nickel-Based Metal-Organic Frameworks and their Derivatives

Metal-Organic Frameworks (MOFs), a novel class of porous extended crystalline structures, are favored in different fields of heterogeneous catalysis, CO₂ separation and conversion, and energy storage (supercapacitors) due to their convenience of synthesis, structural tailor-ability, tunable pore size, high porosity, large specific surface area, devisable structures, and adjustable compositions. Nickel (Ni) is a ubiquitous element extensively applied in various fields of catalysis and energy storage due to its low cost, high abundance, thermal and chemical stability, and environmentally benign nature. Ni-based MOFs and their derivatives provide us with the opportunity to modify different properties of the Ni center to improve their potential as heterogeneous catalysts or energy storage materials. The recent achievements of Ni-MOFs and their derivatives as catalysts, membrane materials for CO₂ separation and conversion, electrode materials and their respective performance have been discussed in this review.

Universal Strategy to Efficiently Coat Zeolitic Imidazolate Frameworks onto Diverse Substrates

Anchoring metal-organic framework (MOF) coating has attracted extensive interest due to its wide applications in drug delivery, gas storage and separation, catalysis, and so forth. Here, we reported a flexible strategy on generating ZIF-8 coatings onto diverse substrates in the scale up to hundreds cm2, independent of the geometry of the substrate, with controllable thickness, texture structure, and crystal size of coating. By understanding the mechanism and factors on the formation of ZIF-8 coatings, various zeolitic imidazolate framework coatings were successfully produced. This general strategy and in-depth insights pave the new highway to the design and synthesis of MOF coatings onto diverse substrates.

Hollow mesoporous atomically dispersed metal-nitrogen-carbon catalysts with enhanced diffusion for catalysis involving larger molecules

Single-atom catalysts (SACs) show great promise in various applications due to their maximal atom utilization efficiency. However, the controlled synthesis of SACs with appropriate porous structures remains a challenge that must be overcome to address the diffusion issues in catalysis. Resolving these diffusion issues has become increasingly important because the intrinsic activity of the catalysts is dramatically improved by spatially isolated single-atom sites. Herein, we develop a facile topo-conversion strategy for fabricating hollow mesoporous metal-nitrogen-carbon SACs with enhanced diffusion for catalysis. Several hollow mesoporous metal-nitrogen-carbon SACs, including Co, Ni, Mn and Cu, are successfully fabricated by this strategy. Taking hollow mesoporous cobalt-nitrogen-carbon SACs as a proof-of-concept, diffusion and kinetic experiments demonstrate the enhanced diffusion of hollow mesoporous structures compared to the solid ones, which alleviates the bottleneck of poor mass transport in catalysis, especially involving larger molecules. Impressively, the combination of superior intrinsic activity from Co-N₄ sites and the enhanced diffusion from the hollow mesoporous nanoarchitecture significantly improves the catalytic performance of the oxidative coupling of aniline and its derivatives.

Postsynthetic Treatment of ZIF-67 with 5-Methyltetrazole: Evolution from Pseudo-Td to Pseudo-Oh Symmetry and Collapse of Magnetic Ordering

Reaction of Co(II) nitrate with 2-methylimidazole (2mIm) yields ZIF-67, the structure of which features Co(II) ions in pseudo-tetrahedral coordination geometry. Strong antiferromagnetic interactions between Co(II) ions mediated by the 2mIm ligands lead to antiferromagnetic ordering at 22 K. Postsynthetic treatment of Co(II) ZIF-67 with 5-methyltetrazole (5mT) results in the loss of crystallinity and magnetic order. The local structure of the Co(II) ions was probed by a combination of diffuse-reflectance electronic absorption spectroscopy and Co K-edge X-ray absorption spectroscopy (in the XANES and EXAFS regions). Upon reaction with 5mT, the ⁴A₂(F)-⁴T₁(F) and ⁴A₂(F)-⁴T₁(P) transitions at 1140 and 585 nm, respectively, of the pseudo-tetrahedral Co(II) center in ZIF-67 become less prominent and are replaced by transitions at 990 and 475 nm attributable to the ⁴T_1g(F)-⁴T_2g(F) and ⁴T_1g(F)-⁴T_1g(P) transitions of a pseudo-octahedral Co(II) center, respectively. Furthermore, the 1s-3d pre-edge absorption feature in the Co K-edge XANES spectrum loses intensity during this reaction, and the edge feature becomes more sharp, consistent with a change from pseudo-T_d to pseudo-O_h geometry. EXAFS analysis further supports the proposed change in geometry: EXAFS data for ZIF-67 are well fitted to four Co-N scatterers at 1.99 Å, whereas the data for the 5mT-substituted compound are best fitted with 6 Co-N scatterers at 2.14 Å. Our results support the conclusion that a six-coordinate, pseudo-O_h geometry is adopted upon ligand substitution. The increase in coordination number directly increases the Co-N bond distances, which in turn weakens magnetic exchange interactions. No magnetic ordering is found in the 5mT-substituted materials.

Photochromic Metal-Organic Framework for High-Resolution Inkless and Erasable Printing

Inkless and erasable printing as a new technology has received intense attention in reducing paper waste and environmental hazards caused by the use of large amounts of ink. However, achieving high-resolution printing by inkless and erasable printing for practical applications remains a huge challenge. Herein, a new metal-organic framework (MOF) has been synthesized, which exhibits a reversible photochromic behavior. None of the unpaired electrons of metal ions and a unique three-dimensional network hinder electron transfer between the ligands and metal nodes, as well as between the ligands themselves, which are conducive to prolonging the photo-generated color lifetime and suitable for inkless and erasable printing. By virtue of the proper photo-generated color lifetime, strong contrast color before and after light irradiation, and reversible color transformation, a high-resolution printing content for inkless and erasable printing can be achieved by light irradiation. Notably, the paper coated with this MOF can be used for printing not only simple patterns such as pictures but also even texts for practical applications, surpassing other photochromic MOF materials for inkless and erasable printing, and almost comparable to ink and laser printing in terms of practicality and resolution. In addition, the MOF-coated paper can be reused for multiple cycles without significant deterioration.

Validation of two contrasting capturing mechanisms for gaseous formaldehyde between two different types of strong metal-organic framework adsorbents

In this research, the adsorption behavior of formaldehyde (FA) onto two types of metal-organic frameworks (MOFs: MOF-199 [M199] and UiO-66-NH₂ [U6N]) is investigated against changes in the key process variables (e.g., FA partial pressure (0.5-10 Pa), temperature (30-120 °C), and relative humidity (RH: 0%, 50%, and 100%)). The results revealed that the FA adsorption behavior onto both MOFs is exothermic in nature. Besides, their relative dominance for FA uptake varies interactively with the changes in RH and FA partial pressure levels. As the FA levels increase in dry conditions, their breakthrough volumes (BTV (100% BT)) exhibit contrasting trends: The values of U6N decreased noticeably from 5232 and 3792 L·atm·g^-1, while those of M199 increased from 4152 to 5772 L·atm·g^-1. The superiority of U6N over M199 in the lower FA level (at<5 Pa) is supported by the Lewis acid-base interactions with amine groups (U6N) in line with kinetic/isotherm studies. Such superiority is also persistent at higher (10 Pa) FA level under all humid conditions in line with its higher moisture stability. However, in dry conditions, the reversal of relative dominance in which M199 exhibits enhanced efficacy for 10 Pa FA uptake (relative to U6N) should reflect its breathing effects with the potent role of pore-diffusion mechanism. This study offers valuable insights into the construction of tunable adsorbents with enhanced adsorptivity toward key targets.

Self-supported metal-organic framework-based nanostructures as binder-free electrodes for supercapacitors

Metal-organic frameworks (MOFs), an interesting class of functional inorganic materials, have recently emerged as suitable electrode materials or templates/precursors of electrode materials for supercapacitors (SCs). The key in utilizing MOF-based electrode materials is to address the low electronic conductivity and poor stability issues. Therefore, the rational design and fabrication of self-supported binder-free electrodes is considered the most promising strategy to address these challenges. In this review, we summarize the recent advances in the design and manufacture of self-supported MOF-based nanostructures and their use as binderless electrodes for SCs, especially over the last five years. The synthesis strategies for constructing pristine MOFs, MOF composites and MOF derivative arrays are overviewed. By highlighting the advantages and challenges of each class of electrode materials, we hope that this review will provide some insights into the rational design of MOF-based electrode materials to promote the future development of this highly exciting field.

Mixed-Valence Bimetallic Ce/Zr MOF-Based Nanoarchitecture: A Visible-Light-Active Photocatalyst for Ciprofloxacin Degradation and Hydrogen Evolution

A mixed-valency bimetallic Ce/Zr MOF with Ce³⁺/Ce⁴⁺ ions incorporated and an oxygen vacancy-rich single-component photocatalyst have been designed through the one-step solvothermal route to harness photons from the visible-light spectrum for green energy (H₂) generation and ciprofloxacin (CIP) degradation. The one-pot-engineered bimetallic Ce/Zr MOF shows visible-light-active characteristics accompanied by a narrower band gap, along with enhanced exciton separation and superior ligand-to-metal charge transfer (LMCT), due to the presence of an interconvertible Ce³⁺/Ce⁴⁺ ions pair in comparison to its pristine MOF counterpart. The Ce ion insertion led to increase in electron density around the Zr⁴⁺ ion, along with generation of some oxygen vacancies (OV), which cumulatively led to the rise in the photo-reaction output. The synthesized UNH (Ce/Zr 1:1) MOF displayed a boosted photocatalytic H₂ production rate of 468.30 μmol h^-1 (ACE = 3.51%), which is around fourfolds higher than that of pristine MOFs. Moreover, for CIP photodegradation, the UNH (Ce/Zr 1:1) shows an enhanced efficiency of 90.8% and follows pseudo-first-order kinetics with a rate constant of 0.0363. Typically, the active species involved in the photo-redox reaction of the CIP photodegradation follows the order hydroxyl radical (OH^•) < superoxide radical (O₂^•-), as confirmed by the TA and NBT tests. Consequently, the bimetallic Ce/Zr MOF can be readily employed as a robust photocatalyst with enhanced tendencies towards CIP degradation and H₂ evolution.

Metal-organic frameworks for advanced transducer based gas sensors: review and perspectives

The development of gas sensing devices to detect environmentally toxic, hazardous, and volatile organic compounds (VOCs) has witnessed a surge of immense interest over the past few decades, motivated mainly by the significant progress in technological advancements in the gas sensing field. A great deal of research has been dedicated to developing robust, cost-effective, and miniaturized gas sensing platforms with high efficiency. Compared to conventional metal-oxide based gas sensing materials, metal-organic frameworks (MOFs) have garnered tremendous attention in a variety of fields, including the gas sensing field, due to their fascinating features such as high adsorption sites for gas molecules, high porosity, tunable morphologies, structural diversities, and ability of room temperature (RT) sensing. This review summarizes the current advancement in various pristine MOF materials and their composites for different electrical transducer-based gas sensing applications. The review begins with a discussion on the overview of gas sensors, the significance of MOFs, and their scope in the gas sensing field. Next, gas sensing applications are divided into four categories based on different advanced transducers: chemiresistive, capacitive, quartz crystal microbalance (QCM), and organic field-effect transistor (OFET) based gas sensors. Their fundamental concepts, gas sensing ability towards various gases, sensing mechanisms, and their advantages and disadvantages are discussed. Finally, this review is concluded with a summary, existing challenges, and future perspectives.

Enhanced Oral NO Delivery through Bioinorganic Engineering of Acid-Sensitive Prodrug into a Transformer-like DNIC@MOF Microrod

Nitric oxide (NO) is an endogenous gasotransmitter regulating alternative physiological processes in the cardiovascular system. To achieve translational application of NO, continued efforts are made on the development of orally active NO prodrugs for long-term treatment of chronic cardiovascular diseases. Herein, immobilization of NO-delivery [Fe₂(μ-SCH₂CH₂COOH)₂(NO)₄] (DNIC-2) onto MIL-88B, a metal-organic framework (MOF) consisting of biocompatible Fe³⁺ and 1,4-benzenedicarboxylate (BDC), was performed to prepare a DNIC@MOF microrod for enhanced oral delivery of NO. In simulated gastric fluid, protonation of the BDC linker in DNIC@MOF initiates its transformation into a DNIC@tMOF microrod, which consisted of DNIC-2 well dispersed and confined within the BDC-based framework. Moreover, subsequent deprotonation of the BDC-based framework in DNIC@tMOF under simulated intestinal conditions promotes the release of DNIC-2 and NO. Of importance, this discovery of transformer-like DNIC@MOF provides a parallel insight into its stepwise transformation into DNIC@tMOF in the stomach followed by subsequent conversion into molecular DNIC-2 in the small intestine and release of NO in the bloodstream of mice. In comparison with acid-sensitive DNIC-2, oral administration of DNIC@MOF results in a 2.2-fold increase in the oral bioavailability of NO to 65.7% in mice and an effective reduction of systolic blood pressure (SBP) to a ΔSBP of 60.9 ± 4.7 mmHg in spontaneously hypertensive rats for 12 h.
