Abstract
The means of structural hybridization such as heterojunction construction and carbon-coating engineering for facilitating charge transfer and electron transport are considered viable strategies to address the challenges associated with the low rate capability and poor cycling stability of sulfide-based anodes in potassium-ion batteries (PIBs). Motivated by these concepts, we have successfully prepared a hydrangea-like bimetallic sulfide heterostructure encapsulated in nitrogen-doped carbon (FMS@NC) using a simple solvothermal method, followed by poly-dopamine wrapping and a one-step sulfidation/carbonization process. When served as an anode for PIBs, this FMS@NC demonstrates a high specific capacity (585 mAh g-1 at 0.05 A/g) and long cycling stability. Synergetic effects of mitigated volume expansions and enhanced conductivity that are responsbile for such high performance have been verified to originate from the heterostructured sulfides and the N-doped carbon matrix. Meanwhile, comprehensive characterization reveals existence of an intercalation-conversion hybrid K-ion storage mechanism in this material. Impressively, a K-ion capacitor with the FMS@NC anode and a commercial activated carbon cathode exhibits a superior energy density of up to 192 Wh kg-1, a high power density, and outstanding cycling stability. This study provides constructive guidance for designing high-performance and durable potassium-ion storage anodes for next-generation energy storage devices.

Abstract
Constructing quantum dot-scale metal sulfides with defects and strongly coupled with carbon is significant for advanced sodium-ion batteries (SIBs). Herein, Se substituted V3S4 quantum dots with anionic defects confined in nitrogen-doped carbon matrix (V3S4-xSex/NC) are fabricated. Introducing element Se into V3S4 crystal expands the interlayer distance of V3S4, and triggers anionic defects, which can facilitate Na+ diffusions and act as active sites for Na+ storage. Meanwhile, the quantum dots tightly encapsulated by conductive carbon framework improve the stability and conductivity of the electrode. Theoretical calculations also unveil that the presence of Se enhances the conductivity and Na+ adsorption ability of V3S4-xSex. These properties contribute to the V3S4-xSex/NC with high specific capacity of 447 mAh g-1 at 0.2 A g-1, and prominent rate and cyclic performance with 504 mAh g-1 after 1000 cycles at 10 A g-1. The sodium-ion hybrid capacitors (SIHCs) with V3S4-xSex/NC anode and activated carbon cathode can achieve high energy/power density (maximum 144 Wh kg-1/5960 W kg-1), capacity retention ratio of 71% after 4000 cycles at 2 A g-1. This work not only synthesizes V3S4-xSex/NC, but also provides a promising opportunity for designing quantum dots and utilizing defects to improve the electrochemical properties.

Abstract
1T-MoSe2 is recognized as a promising anode material for sodium-ion batteries, thanks to its excellent electrical conductivity and large interlayer distance. However, its inherent thermodynamic instability often presents unparalleled challenges in phase control and stabilization. Here, a molecular intercalation strategy is developed to synthesize thermally stable 1T-rich MoSe2, covalently bonded to an intercalated carbon layer (1TR/2H-MoSe2@C). Density functional theory calculations uncover that the introduced ethylene glycol molecules not only serve as electron donors, inducing a reorganization of Mo 4d orbitals, but also as sacrificial guest materials that generate a conductive carbon layer. Furthermore, the C─Se/C─O─Mo bonds encourage strong interfacial electronic coupling, and the carbon layer prevents the restacking of MoSe2, regulating the maximum 1T phase to an impressive 80.3%. Consequently, the 1TR/2H-MoSe2@C exhibits an extraordinary rate capacity of 326 mAh g-1 at 5 A g-1 and maintains a long-term cycle stability up to 1500 cycles, with a capacity of 365 mAh g-1 at 2 A g-1. Additionally, the full cell delivers an appealing energy output of 194 Wh kg-1 at 208 W kg-1, with a capacity retention of 87.3% over 200 cycles. These findings contribute valuable insights toward the development of innovative transition metal dichalcogenides for next-generation energy storage technologies.

Abstract
A sulfur vacancy-rich, Sn-doped as well as carbon-coated MoS2 composite (Vs-SMS@C) is rationally synthesized via a simple hydrothermal method combined with ball-milling reduction, which enhances the sodium storage performance. Benefiting from the 3D fast Na+ transport network composed of the defective carbon coating, Mo─S─C bonds, enlarged interlayer spacing, S-vacancies, and lattice distortion in the composite, the Na+ storage kinetics is significantly accelerated. As expected, Vs-SMS@C releases an ultrahigh reversible capacity of 1089 mAh g-1 at 0.1 A g-1, higher than the theoretical capacity. It delivers a satisfactory capacity of 463 mAh g-1 at a high current density of 10 A g-1, which is the state-of-the-art rate capability compared to other MoS2 based sodium ion battery anodes to the knowledge. Moreover, a super long-term cycle stability is achieved by Vs-SMS@C, which keeps 91.6% of the initial capacity after 3000 cycles under the current density of 5 A g-1 in the voltage of 0.3-3.0 V. The sodium storage mechanism of Vs-SMS@C is investigated by employing electrochemical methods and ex situ techniques. The synergistic effect between S-vacancies and doped-Sn is evidenced by DFT calculations. This work opens new ideas for seeking excellent metal sulfide anodes.

Abstract
The 2H-MoS2/nitrogen-doped carbon (2H-MoS2/NC) composite is a promising anode material for potassium-ion batteries (PIBs). Various transition metal doping has been adopted to optimize the poor intrinsic electronic conductivity and lack of active sites in the intralayer of 2H-MoS2. However, its optimization mechanisms have not been well probed. In this paper, using Cobalt (Co) as an example, we aim to investigate the influence of transition metal doping on the electronic and mechanical properties and electrochemical performance of 2H-MoS2/NC via first-principles calculation. Co doping is found to be effective in improving the electronic conductivity and the areas of active sites on different positions (C surface, interface, and MoS2 surface) of 2H-MoS2/NC. The increased active sites can optimize K adsorption and diffusion capability/processes, where general smaller K adsorption energies and diffusion energy barriers are found after Co doping. This helps improve the rate performance. Especially, the pyridinic N (pyN), pyrrolic N (prN), and graphitic N (grN) are first unveiled to respectively work best in K kinetic adsorption, diffusion, and interfacial stability. These findings are instructive to experimental design of high rate 2H-MoS2/NC electrode materials. The roles of different N types provide new ideas for optimal design of other functional composite materials.

Abstract
Herein, carbon-coated MoSe2 decorated Mo2CTx MXene heterostructures (MoSe2/Mo2CTx@C) have been fabricated. Mo2CTx works as a dual-function electron/ion conductor, which not only provides high conductivity and mechanical strength, but also prevents the severe self-aggregation of few layered MoSe2 nanosheets. The high reversible capacities of 405 mA h g-1 at 100 mA g-1 after 150 cycles and 258 mA h g-1 at 2000 mA g-1 after 400 cycles could be achieved for a potassium-ion battery.

Abstract
Molybdenum selenium (MoSe2 ) has tremendous potential in potassium-ion batteries (PIBs) due to its large interlayer distance, favorable bandgap, and high theoretical specific capacity. However, the poor conductivity and large K+ insertion/extraction in MoSe2 inevitably leads to sluggish reaction kinetics and poor structural stability. Herein, Coinduced engineering is employed to illuminate high-conductivity electron pathway and mobile ion diffusion of MoSe2 nanosheets anchored on reduced graphene oxide substrate (Co-MoSe2 /rGO). Benefiting from the activated electronic conductivity and ion diffusion kinetics, and an expanded interlayer spacing resulting from Co doping, combined with the interface coupling with highly conductive reduced graphene oxide (rGO) substrate through Mo-C bonding, the Co-MoSe2 /rGO anode demonstrates remarkable reversible capacity, superior rate capability, and stable long-term cyclability for potassium storage, as well as superior energy density and high power density for potassium-ion capacitors. Systematic performance measurement, dynamic analysis, in-situ/ex-situ measurements, and density functional theory (DFT) calculations elucidate the performance-enhancing mechanism of Co-MoSe2 /rGO in view of the electronic and ionic transport kinetics. This work offers deep atomic insights into the fundamental factors of electrodes for potassium-ion batteries/capacitors with superior electrochemical performance.

Abstract
In recent years, there has been significant interest in the development of two-dimensional (2D) nanomaterials with unique physicochemical properties for various energy applications. These properties are often derived from the phase structures established through a range of physical and chemical design strategies. A concrete analysis of the phase structures and real reaction mechanisms of 2D energy nanomaterials requires advanced characterization methods that offer valuable information as much as possible. Here, we present a comprehensive review on the phase engineering of typical 2D nanomaterials with the focus of synchrotron radiation characterizations. In particular, the intrinsic defects, atomic doping, intercalation, and heterogeneous interfaces on 2D nanomaterials are introduced, together with their applications in energy-related fields. Among them, synchrotron-based multiple spectroscopic techniques are emphasized to reveal their intrinsic phases and structures. More importantly, various in situ methods are employed to provide deep insights into their structural evolutions under working conditions or reaction processes of 2D energy nanomaterials. Finally, conclusions and research perspectives on the future outlook for the further development of 2D energy nanomaterials and synchrotron radiation light sources and integrated techniques are discussed.

Abstract
2D transition metal dichalcogenides (TMDCs) and single-atom catalysts (SACs) are promising electrodes for energy conversion/storage because of the layered structure and maximum atom utilization efficiency. However, the integration of such two type materials and the relevant sodium storage applications remain daunting challenges. Here, an ingenious diatomite-templated synthetic strategy is designed to fabricate single-atom cobalt-doped MoS2 /carbon (SA Co-MoS2 /C) composites toward the high-performance sodium storage. Benefiting from the unique hierarchical structure, high electron/sodium-ion conductivity, and abundant active sites, the obtained SA Co-MoS2 /C reveals remarkable specific capacity (≈604.0 mAh g-1 at 0.1 A g-1 ), high rate performance, and outstanding long cyclic stability. Particularly, the sodium-ion full cell composed of SA Co-MoS2 /C anode and Na3 V2 (PO4 )3 cathode demonstrates unexpected stability with the cycle number exceeded 1200. The internal sodium storage mechanism is clarified with the aid of density functional theory calculations and in situ experimental characterizations. This work not only represents a substantial leap in terms of synthesizing SACs on 2D TMDCs but also provides a crucial step toward the practical sodium-ion battery applications.

Abstract
Transition-metal selenides have captured significant research attention as anode materials for sodium ion batteries (SIBs) due to their high theoretical specific capacities and excellent electronic conductivity. However, volumetric expansion and inferior cycle life still hinder their practical application. Herein, a three-dimensional (3D) ordered macroporous bimetallic (Mn,Fe) selenide modified by a carbon layer (denoted as 3DOM-MnFeSex@C) composite containing a heterojunction interface is fabricated through selenizing a 3D ordered macroporous Mn-based Prussian Blue analogue single crystal. The 3DOM-MnFeSex@C exhibits hierarchically porous architecture with enhanced mass-transfer efficiency; MnSe and FeSe2 particles are encapsulated into macroporous carbon framework, which can significantly promote the electronic conductivity and maintain the structural integrity. The density functional theory calculation indicates that the heterojunction interface between MnSe and FeSe2 has been successfully engineered so that Na+ can be readily adsorbed and rapidly converted, thus promoting the reaction kinetics and extending the cyclic life. As expected, the 3DOM-MnFeSex@C composite delivers excellent rate performance (277.6 mA h g-1 at 10 A g-1), and prolonged cycling life (191.6 mA h g-1 even after 1000 cycles at 2 A g-1) as a sodium storage anode. The sodium storage mechanism of the composite was further investigated by in situ X-ray diffraction and ex situ high-resolution transmission electron microscopy characterization techniques.

Abstract
Two-dimensional (2D) materials are promising anode materials for the next generation of lithium ion batteries. While the Li storage and kinetics at the surface and intercalation sites of 2D materials are widely explored, the effects of the fracture surfaces (FSs) are rarely considered despite the fact that there are numerous FSs in real 2D materials. Herein, we investigate how the FSs in graphdiyne (GDY) affect the anode performance based on first-principles calculations. Results show that both the internal and external FSs have much lower binding energies to Li atoms than perfect GDY, meaning FSs are more active in storing Li atoms. Then, the diffusion barriers of Li atoms on the internal and external FSs are only 0.42 and 0.47 eV, respectively, close to the 0.315 eV of surface sites and lower than the 0.638 eV of intercalation sites, indicating a good kinetics of Li atoms. In addition, due to the new electronic states from the C atoms with dangling bonds, the FSs convert the semiconductor characteristics of perfect GDY to metallic ones, which is helpful to the electronic conductivity. Our work demonstrates that the FSs in 2D materials are beneficial to the anode performance, which may enlighten the design of anode materials.

Abstract
Layered transition metal chalcogenides (MX, M=Mo, W, Sn, V; X=S, Se, Te) have large ion transport channels and high specific capacity, making them promising for large-sized Na+ /K+ energy-storage technologies. Nevertheless, slow reaction kinetics and huge volume expansion will induce an undesirable electrochemical performance. Numerous efforts have been devoted to designing MX anodes and enhancing their electrochemical performance. Based on the metal-organic assembly strategy, nanostructural engineering, combination with carbon materials, and component regulation can be easily realized, which effectively boost the performance of MX anodes. In this Review, we present a comprehensive overview on the synthesis of MX nanostructure using the metal-organic assembly strategy, which can realize the design of MX nanostructures, based on self-sacrificial templates, host@guest tailored templates, post-modified layer and derivative templates. The preparation routes and structure evolution are mainly discussed. Then, Mo-, W-, Sn-, V-based chalcogenides used for Na+ /K+ energy storage are reviewed, and the relationship between the structure and the electrochemical performance, as well as the energy storage mechanism are emphasized. In addition, existing challenges and future perspectives are also presented.

Abstract
It is indispensable to develop and design high capacity, high rate performance, long cycling life, and low-cost electrodes materials for lithium-ion batteries (LIBs) and sodium-ion batteries (SIBs). Herein, MoO2 /MoS2 /C, with dual heterogeneous interfaces, is designed to induce a built-in electric field, which has been proved by experiments and theoretical calculation can accelerate electrochemical reaction kinetics and generate interfacial interactions to strengthen structural stability. The carbon foam serves as a conductive frame to assist the movement of electrons/ions, as well as forms heterogeneous interfaces with MoO2 /MoS2 through CS and CO bonds, maintaining structural integrity and enhancing electronic transport. Thanks to these unique characteristics, the MoO2 /MoS2 /C renders a significantly enhanced electrochemical performance (324 mAh g-1 at 1 A g-1 after 1000 cycles for SIB and 500 mAh g-1 at 1 A g-1 after 500 cycles for LIBs). The current work presents a simple, useful and cost-effective route to design high-quality electrodes via interfacial engineering.

Abstract
The urgent demand for large-scale global energy storage systems and portable electronic devices is driving the need for considerable energy density and stable batteries. Here, Se atoms are introduced between MoSe2 layers (denoted as MoSe2+x ) by bond modulation to produce a high-performance cathode for potassium-ion batteries. The introduced Se atoms form covalent Se-Se bonds with the Se in MoSe2, and the advantages of bond modulation are as follows: (i) the interlayer spacing is enlarged which increases the storage space of K+; (ii) the system possesses a dual reaction mechanism, and the introduced Se can provide an additional conversion reaction when discharged to 0.5 V, which improves the capacity further; (iii) the Se atoms confined between MoSe2 layers do not give rise to the shuttle effect. MoSe2+x is compounded with rGO (MoSe2+x -rGO) as a cathode for potassium-ion batteries and displays an ultrahigh capacity (235 mA h g-1 at 100 mA g-1), a long cycle life (300 cycles at 100 mA g-1) and an extraordinary rate performance (135 mA h g-1 at 1000 mA g-1 and 89 mA h g-1 at 2000 mA g-1). Pairing the MoSe2+x -rGO cathode with graphite, the full cell delivers considerable energy density compared to other K cathode materials. The MoSe2+x -rGO cathode also exhibits excellent electrochemical performance for lithium-ion batteries. This study on bond modulation driving combined intercalation and conversion reactions offers new insights into the design of high-performance K cathodes.

Abstract
The Gibbs free energy of hydrogen adsorption at the edge of molybdenum disulfide (MoS2) is close to that of Pt, meaning that MoS2 is the best candidate to replace Pt-based materials. However, easy agglomeration between layers to mask active sites, lack of catalytic activity in the basal planes, and poor electronic conductivity make MoS2 exhibit dissatisfactory hydrogen evolution reaction (HER) catalytic performance. Here, we successfully construct a van der Waals heterostructure stacked alternately with Mo(SSe)2-x and graphene (Mo(SSe)2-x/G) to enhance its catalytic ability. The introduction of Se into MoS2 and the thermal treatment induce the sample to generate more anion vacancies. Theoretical and experimental results demonstrate the constructed van der Waals heterostructure, the introduced Se element, and the increased anion vacancies are in favor of promoting the number of active sites and improving the electronic conductivity of the catalyst. Therefore, Mo(SSe)2-x/G exhibits superior HER catalytic performance (the overpotentials of 137 mV and 136 mV at a current of 10 mA cm-2) and long-term stabilities (>90 h and 140 h at a current density of 20 mA cm-2) in both acidic and alkaline media.

Abstract
Mo-based heterostructures offer a new strategy to improve the electronics/ion transport and diffusion kinetics of the anode materials for sodium-ion batteries (SIBs). MoO2/MoS2 hollow nanospheres have been successfully designed via in-situ ion exchange technology with the spherical coordination compound Mo-glycerates (MoG). The structural evolution processes of pure MoO2, MoO2/MoS2, and pure MoS2 materials have been investigated, illustrating that the structureofthenanospherecan be maintained by introducing the S-Mo-S bond. Based on the high conductivity of MoO2, the layered structure of MoS2 and the synergistic effect between components, as-obtained MoO2/MoS2 hollow nanospheres display enhanced electrochemical kinetic behaviors for SIBs. The MoO2/MoS2 hollow nanospheres achieve a rate performance with 72% capacity retention at a current of 3200 mA g-1 compared to 100 mA g-1. The capacity can be restored to the initial capacity after a current returns to 100 mA g-1, while the capacity fading of pure MoS2 is up to 24%. Moreover, the MoO2/MoS2 hollow nanospheres also exhibit cycling stability, maintaining a stable capacity of 455.4 mAh g-1 after 100 cycles at a current of 100 mA g-1. In this work, the design strategy for the hollow composite structure provides insight into the preparation of energy storage materials.

Abstract
A booming demand for wearable electronic devices urges the development of multifunctional smart fabrics. However, it is still facing a challenge to fabricate multifunctional smart fabrics with satisfactory mechanical property, excellent Joule heating performance, highly efficient photothermal conversion, outstanding electromagnetic shielding effectiveness, and superior anti-bacterial capability. Here, a MoSe2 @MXene heterostructure-based multifunctional cellulose fabric is fabricated by depositing MXene nanosheets onto cellulose fabric followed by a facile hydrothermal method to grow MoSe2 nanoflakes on MXene layers. A low-voltage Joule heating therapy platform with rapid Joule heating response (up to 230 °C in 25 s at a supplied voltage of 4 V) and stable performance under repeated bending cycles (up to 1000 cycles) is realized. Besides, the multifunctional fabric also exhibits excellent photothermal performance (up to 130 °C upon irradiation for 25 s with a light intensity of 400 mW cm-2 ), outstanding electromagnetic interference shielding effectiveness (37 dB), and excellent antibacterial performances (>90% anti-bacterial rate toward Escherichia coli, Bacillus subtilis, and Staphylococcus aureus). This work offers an efficient avenue to fabricate multifunctional wearable thermal therapy devices for mobile healthcare and personal thermal management.

Abstract
Owing to their rich surface chemistry, high conductivity, tunable bandgap, and thermal stability, structured 2D transition-metal carbides, nitrides, and carbonitrides (MXenes) with modulated atomic environments have emerged as efficient electrochemical energy conversion systems in the past decade. Herein, the most recent advances in the engineering of tunable structured MXenes as a powerful new platform for electrocatalytic energy conversion are comprehensively summarized. First, the state-of-the-art synthetic and processing methods, tunable nanostructures, electronic properties, and modulation principles of engineering MXene-derived nanoarchitectures are focused on. The current breakthroughs in the design of catalytic centers, atomic environments, and the corresponding structure-performance correlations, including termination engineering, heteroatom doping, defect engineering, heterojunctions, and alloying, are discussed. Furthermore, representative electrocatalytic applications of structured MXenes in energy conversion systems are also summarized. Finally, the challenges in and prospects for constructing MXene-based electrocatalytic materials are also discussed. This review provides a leading-edge understanding of the engineering of various MXene-based electrocatalysts and offers theoretical and experimental guidance for prospective studies, thereby promoting the practical applications of tunable structured MXenes in electrocatalytic energy conversion systems.

Strain-regulated Gibbs free energy enables reversible redox chemistry of chalcogenides for sodium ion batteries. Nat Commun 2022; 13:5588. Abstract
Manipulating the reversible redox chemistry of transition metal dichalcogenides for energy storage often faces great challenges as it is difficult to regulate the discharged products directly. Herein we report that tensile-strained MoSe2 (TS-MoSe2) can act as a host to transfer its strain to corresponding discharged product Mo, thus contributing to the regulation of Gibbs free energy change (ΔG) and enabling a reversible sodium storage mechanism. The inherited strain results in lattice distortion of Mo, which adjusts the d-band center upshifted closer to the Fermi level to enhance the adsorbability of Na2Se, thereby leading to a decreased ΔG of the redox chemistry between Mo/Na2Se and MoSe2. Ex situ and in situ experiments revealed that, unlike the unstrained MoSe2, TS-MoSe2 shows a highly reversible sodium storage, along with an evidently improved reaction kinetics. This work sheds light on the study on electrochemical energy storage mechanism of other electrode materials. Manipulating the redox chemistry of transition metal dichalcogenides still faces challenges. Here the authors report that tensile-strained MoSe2 can pass on the strain to its sodiated product Mo, and thus regulate the Gibbs free energy in the charging process to enable the reversible sodium storage.

Abstract
Heterostructure construction of layered metal chalcogenides can boost their alkali-metal storage performance, where the charge transfer kinetics can be promoted by the built-in electric fields. However, these heterostructures usually undergo interface separation due to severe layer expansion, especially for large-size potassium accommodation, resulting in the deconstruction of heterostructures and battery performance fading. Herein, first a stable interface design strategy where two metal chalcogenides with totally different layer-morphologies are stacked to form large K+ transport channels, rendering ultralow interlayer expansion, is presented. As a proof of concept, the flat-zigzag MoS2 /Bi2 S3 heterostructures stacked with zigzag-morphology Bi2 S3 and flat-morphology MoS2 present an ultralow expansion ratio (1.98%) versus MoS2 (9.66%) and Bi2 S3 (9.61%), which deliver an ultrahigh potassium storage capacity of above 600 mAh g-1 and capacity retention of 76% after 500 cycles, together with the built-in electric field of heterostructures. Once the heterostructures are used as an anode for potassium-based dual-ion batteries (K-DIBs), it achieves a superior full-cell capacity of ≈166 mAh g-1 with a capacity retention of 71% after 400 cycles, which is an outstanding performance among the reported K-DIBs. This proposed interface stacking strategy may offer a new way toward stable heterostructure design for metal ions storage and transport applications.

Abstract
The development of nanomaterials and their related electrochemical energy storage (EES) devices can provide solutions for improving the performance and development of existing EES systems owing to their high electronic conductivity and ion transport and abundant embeddable sites. Recent progress has demonstrated that metal selenides are attracting increasing attention in the field of EES because of their unique structures, high theoretical capacities, rich element resources, and high conductivity. However, there are still many challenges in their application in EES, and thus the use of nanoscale metal selenide materials in commercial devices is limited. In this review, we summarize recent advances in the nanostructured design of metal selenides (e.g., zero-, one-, two-, and three-dimensional, and self-supported structures) and present their advantages in terms of EES performance. Moreover, some remarks on the potential challenges and research prospects of nanostructured metal selenides in the field of EES are presented.

Abstract
Seeking an optimal catalyst to accelerate conversion reaction kinetics of room-temperature sodium-sulfur (RT Na-S) batteries is crucial for improving their electrochemical performance and promoting the practical applications. Herein, theoretical calculations of interfacial interactions of catalysts and polysulfides in terms of the surface adsorption state, interfacial ions migration, and electronic concentration around the Fermi level are systematically proposed as guiding principles of catalyst selection for RT Na-S batteries. As a case, MoN catalyst is accurately selected from transition metal nitrides with different d orbital electrons, and for experiment, it is introduced into the carbon nanofibers as a dual-functioning host (MoN@CNFs). The MoN@CNFs can effectively anchor polysulfides and accelerate their conversion reaction. In addition, for the sodium anode, the MoN@CNFs can also induce uniform deposition of Na and inhibit dendrite growth, which are supported by in situ characterizations and finite element simulation technique. As a result, the as-prepared RT Na-S battery displays high reversible capacity of 990 mAh g-1 at 0.2 A g-1 after 100 cycles and long lifespan over 1500 cycles at 2 A g-1 . Even with high S loading of 5 mg cm-2 , the RT Na-S battery still exhibits a high areal capacity of 2.5 mAh cm-2 .

Abstract
The rational design of ultrathin and few-layered structures for three-dimensional MoS2 nanospheres is crucial for achieving attractive lithium-ion batteries (LIBs). Herein, hollow nanospheres constructed by ultrafine and few-layered MoS2 homogeneously incorporated in N-doped amorphous carbon (HUF-MoS2/NC) have been successfully synthesized as high-performance anode for LIBs. Using Mo-glycerol spheres as templates and dopamine hydrochloride as coordination ligands, hollow Mo-glycerol-polydopamine precursors are formed with Mo-containing groups which are surrounded by organic carbon species. Consequently, the MoS2 is confined to the nanoscale and grows partially amorphous fragments while being uniformly embedded in NC. This unique architecture can not only hinder the substantial restacking between MoS2 interlayers, offering more active sites, but also vastly enhance the electrical conductivity and relieve the mechanical stress ascribed to volume changes. As a result, the HUF-MoS2/NC composite anode exhibits excellent cyclic stability (980mAhg-1 after 300 cycles at 0.2Ag-1) and superior rate performance (498mAhg-1 at 5.0Ag-1) for LIBs.

Abstract
Potassium-ion batteries (PIBs) exhibit a considerable application prospect for energy storage systems due to their low cost, high operating voltage, and superior ionic conductivity. As a vital configuration in PIBs, the two-phase interface, which refers to K-ion diffusion from the electrolyte to the electrode surface (solid-liquid interface) and K-ion migration between different particles (solid-solid interface), deeply determines the diffusion/reaction kinetics and structural stability, thus significantly affecting the rate performance and cyclability. However, researches on two-phase interface are still in its infancy and need further attentions. This review first starts from the fundamental understanding of solid-liquid and solid-solid interfaces to in-depth analyzing the effect mechanism of different improvement strategies on them, such as optimization of electrolyte and binders, heterostructure design, modulation of interlayer spacing, etc. Afterward, the research progress of these improvement strategies is summarized comprehensively. Finally, the major challenges are proposed, and the corresponding solving strategies are presented. This review is expected to give an insight into the importance of two-phase interface on diffusion/reaction kinetics, and provides a guidance for developing other advanced anodes in PIBs.

Abstract
MoSe2 , as a typical 2D material, possesses tremendous potential in Na-ion batteries (SIBs) owing to larger interlayer distance, more favorable band gap structure, and higher theoretical specific capacity than other analogs. Nevertheless, the low intrinsic electronic conductivity and irreversible conversion of discharged products of Mo/Na2 Se to MoSe2 seriously hamper its electrochemical performance. Herein, through a facile hydrothermal method combined with calcination process, Sn-doped MoSe2 nanosheets grown on graphene substrate in the vertical direction are fabricated. Benefiting from the improved electronic conductivity contributed by the abundant defects and expanded interlamellar spacing of MoSe2 originated from Sn doping, combined with a smart strategy of raising discharge cut-off voltage to 0.2 V during the actual performance testing for SIBs, the as-fabricated anode material delivers superior Na-ions storage performance in terms of electrons/ions transfer, reversible sodium storage as well as cycle stability. An ultra-stable reversible specific capacity of 268.5 mAh g-1 at 1 A g-1 can be maintained after 1600 cycles. Moreover, the great sodium storage property in the SIB full-cell system of the as-obtained nanocomposite illustrates practical potential. Density functional theory calculation and in situ/ex situ measurements are employed to further reveal the storage mechanism and process of Na-ions.

Abstract
Sulfides are perceived as promising anode materials for potassium-ion batteries (PIBs) due to their high theoretical specific capacity and structural diversity. Nonetheless, the poor structural stability and sluggish kinetics of sulfides lead to unsatisfactory electrochemical performance. Herein, Ni3 S2 -Co9 S8 heterostructures with an open-ended nanocage structure wrapped by reduced graphene oxide (Ni-Co-S@rGO cages) are well designed as the anode for PIBs via a selective etching and one-step sulfuration approach. The hollow Ni-Co-S@rGO nanocages, with large surface area, abundant heterointerfaces, and unique open-ended nanocage structure, can reduce the K+ diffusion length and promote reaction kinetics. When used as the anode for PIBs, the Ni-Co-S@rGO exhibits high reversible capacity and low capacity degradation (0.0089% per cycle over 2000 cycles at 10 A g-1 ). A potassium-ion full battery with a Ni-Co-S@rGO anode and Prussian blue cathode can display a superior reversible capacity of 400 mAh g-1 after 300 cycles at 2 A g-1 . The unique structural advantages and electrochemical reaction mechanisms of the Ni-Co-S@rGO are revealed by finite-element-simulation in situ characterizations. The universal synthesis technology of bimetallic sulfide anodes for advanced PIBs may provide vital guidance to design high-performance energy-storage materials.

Abstract
Suitable anode materials with high capacity and long cycling stability, especially capability at high current densities, are urgently needed to advance the development of potassium ion batteries (PIBs) and sodium ion batteries (SIBs). Herein, a porous Ni-doped FeSe2 /Fe3 Se4 heterojunction encapsulated in Se-doped carbon (NF11 S/C) is designed through selenization of MOFs precursor. The porous composite possesses enriched active sites and facilitates transport for both ion and electron. Ni-doping is adopted to enrich the lattice defects and active sites. The Se-C bond and carbon framework endow integrity of the composite and hamper aggregation of selenide nano-particles during potassiation/de-potassiation. The NF11 S/C exhibits exceptional rate performance and ultra-long cycling stability (177.3 mA h g-1 after 3050 cycles at 2 A g-1 for PIBs and 208.8 mA h g-1 after 2000 cycles at 8 A g-1 for SIBs). The potassiation/de-potassiation mechanism is investigated via ex-situ X-ray powder diffraction, high-resolution transmission electron microscopy, X-ray photoelectron spectrocopy and Raman analysis. PTCDA//NF11 S/C full cell stably cycles for 1200 cycles at 200 mA g-1 with a capacity of 103.7 mA h g-1 , indicating the high application potential of the electrode for highly stable rechargeable batteries.

Abstract
Amorphous MoS3 has been an attractive electrode material for sodium-ion batteries and lithium-sulfur batteries. However, the potassium storage capability of amorphous MoS3 remains unreported. Herein, the construction of hybrid hierarchical microspheres composed of amorphous MoS3 nanosheets dual-confined with TiO2 core, and nitrogen-doped carbon shell layer (denoted as TiO2 @A-MoS3 @NC) via a self-templating method, combined with a low-temperature sulfurization process as a new anode material for potassium-ion batteries (PIBs), is reported. Benefitting from the unique structural merits including unique 1D chain structure, disordered arrangement of atoms and a large number of defects of amorphous MoS3 , more active heterointerfacial sites, effectively mitigated volume change, good electrical contact, and easy K+ ion migration, the TiO2 @A-MoS3 @NC microspheres exhibit excellent potassium-storage performance with high specific capacity, superior rate capability, and cycling stability.

Abstract
Graphdiyne (GDY) has been considered as an appealing anode candidate for K-ion storage since its triangular pore channel, alkyne-rich structure, and large interlayer spacing would endow it with abundant active sites and ideal diffusion paths for K-ions. Nevertheless, the low surface area and disordered structure of bulk GDY typically lead to unsatisfied K storage performance. Herein, we have designed a GDY/graphene/GDY (GDY/Gr/GDY) sandwiched architecture affording a high surface area and fine quality throughout a van der Waals epitaxy strategy. As tested in a half-cell configuration, the GDY/Gr/GDY electrode exhibits better capacity output, rate capability, and cyclic stability as compared to the bare GDY counterpart. In situ electrochemical impedance spectroscopy/Raman spectroscopy/transmission electron microscopy are further applied to probe the K-ion storage feature and disclose the favorable reversibility of GDY/Gr/GDY electrode during repeated potassiation/depotassiation. A full-cell device comprising a GDY/Gr/GDY anode and a potassium Prussian blue cathode enables a high cycling stability, demonstrative of the promising potential of the GDY/Gr/GDY anode for K-ion batteries.

Abstract
Inspired by natural biomineralization, a biomineralized microreactor with a mesocrystal KCl shell (BM-KCl-MMs) is made by a facile freezing dry process, exhibiting a good availability for high-temperature solid-state synthesis of nanomaterials. Benefiting from the good thermal stability, stiffness, and mechanical strength of KCl mesocrystal shells, the employment of BM-KCl-MMs in the transition metal (TM)-S-Se system not only realizes for the first time, the production of TMSx Se2- x /C nanocomposites in air atmosphere, but also reaches a high reagent-utilization and high yield, as well as minimum wastes. More importantly, based on the soaking effect of the KCl shells, the resultant stable reaction microenvironment inside endows the microreactors with a well-controlled synthesis of nanomaterials with very even size, uniform dispersion, and novel functionalities. As one example, the as-prepared MoSx Se2- x /C composites as the electrodes of K-ion batteries and K-ion hybrid supercapacitors deliver the state of the art cycling capability of 248 mAh g-1 at 2 A g-1 after 5000 cycles and an 87.1% capacity retention at 5.0 A g-1 after 20 000 cycles, respectively, demonstrating a significant potential of BM-KCl-MMs on design and synthesis of novel functional nanomaterials.

Abstract
The development of graphene promotes the research of similar two-dimensional (2D) materials, especially 2D transition metal dichalcogenides (TMDCs) with semiconductor properties. Monolayer or few-layer TMDCs have several advantages, such as direct band gap, weak interlayer van der Waals force, large interlayer spacing, and abundant marginal active sites, which make them widely used in catalysis, optoelectronics, as well as energy conversion and storage devices. In addition, transition metal diselenides (TMDSs) also possess many intriguing characteristics. For instance, transition metal diselenides (e.g., MoSe2) have a more stable 1T phase, larger interlayer spacing, smaller band gap, and more obvious metallic property of Se than TMDCs (e.g., MoS2). Thus, it has become one of the most attractive research topics branching out from TMDCs. Herein, this review unveils the structures, synthesis, properties, modifications, applications, and perspectives for TMDSs.

Abstract
Transition-metal sulfides are promising electrochemical energy storage materials due to their abundant active sites, large interlayer space, and high theoretical capacities, especially for sodium storage. However, the low conductivity and poor cycling stability at high current densities hamper their applications. Herein, a versatile dual-template method is reported to elaborate ordered mesoporous single-layered MoS2 /carbon composite with high specific area, uniform pore size, and large pore volume. The single-layered MoS2 is confined in the carbon matrix. The mesopores between the composite nanorods provide fast electrolyte diffusion. The obtained nanocomposite shows a high sodium-storage capability, excellent rate capacity, and very good cycling performance. A capacity of 310 mAh g-1 can remain at 5.0 A g-1 after 2500 cycles. Furthermore, a sodium-ion battery (SIB) full cell composed of the MoS2 /carbon composite anode and a Na3 V2 (PO4 )3 (NVP) cathode maintains a specific capacity of 330 mAh g-1 at 1.0 A g-1 during 100 cycles. The mechanism is investigated by in situ and ex situ characterizations as well as density functional theory (DFT) calculations.

Abstract
Attracted by the rich earth abundance and low-cost advantages, alkali metal-ion (Na/K)-based energy storage devices have attracted wide interest as promising candidates for energy economizing in recent years. Unfortunately, the lack of suitable host materials with high capacity and long life span for alkali metal-ion storage has severely impeded their practical application in large-scale energy storage devices. Herein, we present a promising anode candidate composed of ultrasmall MoSe2 clusters embedded in a nitrogen-doped hollow carbon nanobowl substrate to form unique MoSe2-Carbon nanobowl particles (denoted as MoSe2⊂CNB). MoSe2⊂CNB demonstrates exceptional electrochemical properties for alkali metal-ion storage including sodium and potassium. In situ Raman spectroscopy and galvanostatic intermittent titration measurements reveal the possible reason for the high performance of MoSe2⊂CNB. Notably, the assembled potassium-ion hybrid capacitors could manifest an extraordinary energy density of 130.7 W h kg-1 at 0.2 A g-1, a high power density of 13,607 W kg-1, and an enviable cycle life after 6000 cycles, further reflecting the great developmental potential for energy storage devices in practical applications. This work provides a new method to design functional nanostructures for electrode materials to drive the development and application of possible energy storage devices.

Abstract
Potassium ion energy storage devices are competitive candidates for grid-scale energy storage applications owing to the abundancy and cost-effectiveness of potassium (K) resources, the low standard redox potential of K/K+, and the high ionic conductivity in K-salt-containing electrolytes. However, the sluggish reaction dynamics and poor structural instability of battery-type anodes caused by the insertion/extraction of large K+ ions inhibit the full potential of K ion energy storage systems. Extensive efforts have been devoted to the exploration of promising anode materials. This Review begins with a brief introduction of the operation principles and performance indicators of typical K ion energy storage systems and significant advances in different types of battery-type anode materials, including intercalation-, mixed surface-capacitive-/intercalation-, conversion-, alloy-, mixed conversion-/alloy-, and organic-type materials. Subsequently, host-guest relationships are discussed in correlation with the electrochemical properties, underlying mechanisms, and critical issues faced by each type of anode material concerning their implementation in K ion energy storage systems. Several promising optimization strategies to improve the K+ storage performance are highlighted. Finally, perspectives on future trends are provided, which are aimed at accelerating the development of K ion energy storage systems.

Abstract
The potassium-ion battery (PIB) is the most promising alternative to a lithium-ion battery (LIB). Exploitation of a suitable electrode material is crucial to promote the development of PIBs. The MoSe2 material has attracted much attention due to its high theoretical capacity, unique layered structure, and good conductivity. However, the potassium storage property of MoSe2 has been suffering from structural fragmentation and sluggish reaction kinetic caused by large potassium ions upon insertion/extraction, which needs to be further improved. Herein, the MoSe2 nanosheets are confined into N-doped hollow porous carbon microspheres (MoSe2@N-HCS) by spray drying and high-temperature selenization. It delivers a superior rate performance of 113.7 mAh g-1 at 10 A g-1 and remains at a high capacity of 158.3 mAh g-1 at 2 A g-1 even after 16 700 cycles for PIBs. The excellent electrochemical performance can be attributed to unique structure, N-doping, and robust chemical bonds. The storage mechanism of MoSe2 for potassium ions was explored. The outstanding properties of MoSe2@N-HCS make it a promising anode material for PIBs.

Abstract
The advancement of potassium ion batteries (PIBs) stimulated by the dearth of lithium resources is accelerating. Major progresses on the electrochemical properties are based on the optimization of electrode materials, electrolytes, and other components. More significantly, the prerequisites for optimizing these key compositions are in-depth and comprehensive exploration of electrochemical reaction processes, including the evolution of morphology and structure, phase transition, interface behaviors, and K+ movement, etc. As a result, the obtained K+ storage mechanism via analyzing aforementioned reaction processes sheds light on furthering practical application of PIBs. Typical electrochemical analysis methods are capable of obtaining physical and chemical characteristics. The advent of in situ electrochemical measurements enables dynamic observation and monitoring, thereby gaining extensive insights into the intricate mechanism of capacity degradation and interface kinetics. By coupling with these powerful electrochemical characterization techniques, inspiring works in PIBs will burgeon into wide realms of energy storage fields. In this review, some typical electroanalytical tests and in situ hyphenated measurements are described with the main concentration on how these techniques play a role in investigating the potassium storage mechanism for PIBs and achieving encouraging results.

Abstract
Potassium ion batteries (KIBs) have attracted great attention recently as a promising large-scale energy storage system by virtue of the bountiful K resource and low standard hydrogen potential of K+/K. However, their development is hindered by the limited capacity and inferior cycling stability resulting from the large size of K+. Here, a unique vanadium sulfide@carbon nanorod is designed and synthesized for high-performance KIBs. Thanks to the hybrid structure, abundant active sites, fast ion diffusion, and capacitive-like electrochemical behavior of the electrode, the anode exhibits a large specific capacity (468 mA h g-1 after 100 cycles at 0.1 A g-1), predominant rate performance (205 mA h g-1 at 5 A g-1), and impressive cycling stability (171 mA h g-1 for 4000 cycles at 3 A g-1). Furthermore, the constructed KIB full cell demonstrates 229 mA h g-1 at 0.5 A g-1 and 86% capacity retention over 300 cycles.

Abstract
High gravimetric, areal and volumetric capacities together with long lifetime are key indexes for the applications of lithium-sulfur (Li-S) batteries in compact space. The sulfur host materials play pivotal roles in the practical deployment. Herein, one type of new heterostructure nanosheets composed of cobalt boride (CoB) on nitrogen, boron-codoped porous carbon (NBC), which is constructed through molten salt-assisted strategy using ZIF-67-encapsulated ZIF-8 as precursors is reported on. Benefiting from strong interfacial electronic interactions between binary sulfiphilic CoB and porous NBC, the CoB/NBC-S electrode exhibits the excellent cycling stability with low average capacity decay of 0.013% in ultralong 1500 cycles at high rate of 5 C. Remarkably, the electrode with high sulfur content of 82 wt% and high sulfur loading of 5.8 mg cm-2 delivers gravimetric capacity of 1309 mA h g-1 , areal capacity of 7.59 mA h cm-2 , and volumetric capacity of 1355 mA h cm-3 at 0.1 C. The favorable electrochemical performance can rival with the state-of-the-art of those in the reported nanosheets-based sulfur cathodes. This study provides new methodology for the design of heterostructure nanosheets of metal borides to achieve energy density and longevity of Li-S batteries.

Abstract
Room-temperature sodium-sulfur (RT Na-S) batteries are highly desirable for a sustainable large-scale energy-storage system due to their high energy density and low cost. Nevertheless, practical applications of RT Na-S batteries are still prevented by the shuttle effect of sodium polysulfides (NaPS), slow reaction kinetics of S, and incomplete conversion process of NaPS. Here, Mo2 N-W2 N heterostructures embedded in a spherical carbon superstructure (Mo2 N-W2 N@PC) are designed to efficiently suppress the "polysulfide shuttle" and promote NaPS redox reactions. The designed Mo2 N-W2 N@PC heterostructure with abundant heterointerfaces, high conductivity, and porosity can facilitate electron/ion diffusion and provide high catalytic activity for efficient NaPS conversion. The obtained Na-S battery delivers high reversible capacity with superior long-term cyclability (517 mAh g-1 at 1 A g-1 after 400 cycles) and unprecedented rate capability (417 mAh g-1 at 2 A g-1 ). Furthermore, the electrocatalysis mechanism is revealed by combining in situ X-ray diffraction (XRD), ex situ X-ray photoelectron spectroscopy (XPS), UV-vis spectra, and precipitation experiments. This work demonstrates a novel heterostructure design strategy that enables high-performance Na-S batteries.
