Abstract
Nanomaterial-based self-healing electrodes have demonstrated significant potential in sensing and energy storage applications due to their ability to withstand electrical breakdowns at high electric fields. However, such electrodes often face mechanical challenges, such as cracking under stress, compromising stability and reliability. This review critically examines nanomaterial-based self-healing mechanisms, focusing on properties and applications in health monitoring, motion sensing, environmental monitoring, and energy storage. By comprehensively reviewing research conducted on dimension-based nanomaterials (OD, 1D, 2D, and 3D) for self-healing electrode applications, this paper aims to provide essential insights into design strategies and performance enhancements afforded by nanoscale dimensions. This review paper highlights the tremendous potential of harnessing dimensional nanomaterials to develop autonomously restoring electrodes for next-generation sensing and energy devices.

Abstract
The limited energy density of micro-supercapacitors (MSCs) and challenges in their integration significantly impede the advancement of MSCs in wearable electronic devices. Here, this work designs a robust and wrinkled liquid metal-CNT-PEDOT:PSS film with high capacity and self-healing properties (defined as LM-CNT-PEDOT:PSS). The wrinkled structure further enhances tensile properties of LM-CNT-PEDOT:PSS and increases its active specific surface area per unit. Simultaneously, the incorporation of liquid metal (LM) enhances both the mechanical and healing properties of the LM-CNT-PEDOT:PSS electrode. The flexible and self-healing MSC based on wrinkled LM-CNT-PEDOT:PSS shows a remarkable specific capacitance of 114.29 mF cm-2 and a high areal energy density of 15.47 µW h cm-2. Furthermore, the electrochemical performance of the healed MSC retained 90.01% of its initial performance, and the MSC unit can be arbitrarily integrated according to various energy and voltage requirements through the healing properties of LM-CNT-PEDOT:PSS, widening the range of applications in next-generation microelectronic devices. The wrinkled LM-CNT-PEDOT:PSS film is utilized for the fabrication of a highly sensitive strain sensor. Simultaneously, the prepared sensor can be seamlessly integrated with wireless charging and MSC to facilitate convenient monitoring of physiological signals, thereby offering an effective solution for the advancement of wearable technology and self-powered systems.

Abstract
Human-machine interfacing (HMI) has emerged as a critical technology in healthcare, robotics, and wearable electronics, with hydrogels offering unique advantages as multifunctional materials that seamlessly connect biological systems with electronic devices. This review provides a detailed examination of recent advancements in hydrogel design, focusing on their properties and potential applications in HMI. We explore the key characteristics such as biocompatibility, mechanical flexibility, and responsiveness, which are essential for effective and long-term integration with biological tissues. Additionally, we highlight innovations in conductive hydrogels, hybrid and composite materials, and fabrication techniques such as 3D/4D printing, which allow for the customization of hydrogel properties to meet the demands of specific HMI applications. Further, we discuss the diverse classes of polymers that contribute to hydrogel conductivity, including conducting, natural, synthetic, and hybrid polymers, emphasizing their role in enhancing electrical performance and mechanical adaptability. In addition to material design, we examine the regulatory landscape governing hydrogel-based biointerfaces for HMI applications, addressing the key considerations for clinical translation and commercialization. An analysis of the patent landscape provides insights into emerging trends and innovations shaping the future of hydrogel technologies in human-machine interactions. The review also covers a range of applications, including wearable electronics, neural interfaces, soft robotics, and haptic systems, where hydrogels play a transformative role in enhancing human-machine interactions. Thereafter, the review addresses the challenges hydrogels face in HMI applications, including issues related to stability, biocompatibility, and scalability, while offering future perspectives on the continued evolution of hydrogel-based systems for HMI technologies.

Abstract
Flexible sensors are revolutionizing wearable and implantable devices, with conductive hydrogels emerging as key materials due to their biomimetic structure, biocompatibility, tunable transparency, and stimuli-responsive electrical properties. However, their fragility and limited durability pose significant challenges for broader applications. Drawing inspiration from the self-healing capabilities of natural organisms like mussels, researchers are embedding self-repair mechanisms into hydrogels to improve their reliability and lifespan. This review highlights recent advances in self-healing (SH) conductive hydrogels, focusing on synthesis methods, healing mechanisms, and strategies to enhance multifunctionality. It also explores their wide-ranging applications, including in vivo signal monitoring, wearable biochemical sensors, supercapacitors, flexible displays, triboelectric nanogenerators, and implantable bioelectronics. While progress has been made, challenges remain in balancing self-healing efficiency, mechanical strength, and sensing performance. This review offers insights into overcoming these obstacles and discusses future research directions for advancing SH hydrogel-based bioelectronics, aiming to pave the way for durable, high-performance devices in next-generation wearable and implantable technologies.

Abstract
BACKGROUND Chronic rhinosinusitis (CRS) is an inflammatory disease characterized by persistent immune dysregulation, which presents considerable limitations in current medical therapy. OBJECTS This study investigates a supramolecular gel (PSPD), which aims to minimize systemic adverse effects through local injection, provide long-lasting anti-inflammatory effects, and modulate the mucosal immune microenvironment. METHODS The properties of PSPD were evaluated using rheological experiments. Biocompatibility assessments were conducted through CCK-8 and serum biochemical analyses. The balance between TH17 and Treg was determined using immunofluorescence (IF) and flow cytometry (FC). Additionally, sinus computed tomography (CT), and endoscopy were employed to evaluate mucosal swelling. RESULTS Rheological assessments revealed that PSPD possesses excellent self-healing and slow-release properties. CCK-8 and serum biochemical assays indicated that PSPD demonstrated superior biocompatibility. In nasal polyps, PSPD significantly inhibited IL17 expression. In an Eosinophilic Chronic Rhinosinusitis (ECRS) rat model, treatment with PSPD led to significant alleviation of nasal mucosal congestion. Furthermore, PSPD modulated the proliferation of TH17 and Treg as well as the expression of cytokines, ultimately reversing the TH17/Treg immune imbalance. CONCLUSION This multifunctional gel effectively sustains the modulation of TH17/Treg homeostasis, improving long-term disease management and representing a promising new therapeutic strategy for CRS, particularly in cases of ECRS.

Abstract
Intelligent electronic skin aims to mimic, enhance, and even surpass the functions of biological skin, enabling artificial systems to sense environmental stimuli and interact more naturally with humans. In healthcare, intelligent electronic skin is revolutionizing diagnostics and personalized medicine by detecting early signs of diseases and programming exogenous stimuli for timely intervention and on-demand treatment. This review discusses latest progress in bioinspired intelligent electronic skin and its application in medicine and healthcare. First, strategies for the development of intelligent electronic skin to simulate or even surpass human skin are discussed, focusing on its basic characteristics, as well as sensing and regulating functions. Then, the applications of electronic skin in health monitoring and wearable therapies are discussed, illustrating its potential to provide early warning and on-demand treatment. Finally, the significance of electronic skin in bridging the gap between electronic and biological systems is emphasized and the challenges and future perspectives of intelligent electronic skin are summarized.

Abstract
Alternating-current electroluminescent fibres are promising candidates as light sources for smart textiles and soft machines. However, physical damage from daily use causes device deterioration or failure, making self-healable electroluminescent fibres attractive. In addition, soft robots could benefit from light-emitting combined with magnetically actuated functions. Here, we present a self-healing and actuatable Scalable Hydrogel-clad Ionotronic Nickel-core Electroluminescent (SHINE) fibre which achieves a record luminance of 1068 cd × m-2 at 5.7 V × μm-1. The SHINE fibre can self-heal across all constituent layers after being severed, recovering 98.6% of pristine luminance and maintaining for over 10 months. SHINE fibre is also magnetically actuatable due to the ferromagnetic nickel electrode core, enabling a soft robotic fibre with omnidirectional actuation and electro-luminescence. Our approach to this multifunctional fibre broadens the design of fibre electronics and fibre robots, with applications in interactive displays and damage-resilient navigation.

Abstract
Cobaltocenium-containing (co)polysiloxanes (Cc-PDMSs) with terminal and side groups were synthesized by the reaction of catalyst-free hydroamination between ethynylcobaltocenium hexafluorophosphate and polysiloxanes comprising amino moieties as terminal and side groups. The conversion of NH2 groups in the polymers reaches 85%. The obtained (co)polysiloxanes "gelate" due to an increase in their molecular weight by approx. 30 times, when stored at room temperature over one week. "Gelated" Cc-PDMSs remain soluble in most polar solvents. The structure of Cc-PDMSs and the mechanism of "gelation" were established by 1H, 13C{1H}, 29Si{1H}, 19F{1H}, 31P{1H} nuclear magnetic resonance, infrared, ultraviolet-visible, and X-ray photoelectron spectroscopies. As determined by cyclic voltammetry, Cc-PDMSs possess redox properties (CoII/CoIII transitions at E1/2 = -1.8 and -1.3 V before and after "gelation", respectively). This synthetic approach allows to increase the molecular weights of the synthesized polysiloxanes functionalized with cobaltocenium groups easily, leading to their higher film-forming ability, which is desirable for some electronic applications. Cc-PDMSs can be utilized as redox-active polymer films in modified electrodes, electrochromic devices, redox-active coatings, and components for batteries.

Abstract
As a key component for wearable electronics, intrinsically stretchable and healable semiconducting polymers are scarce because carrier mobility is often reduced with increasing stretchability and self-healability. Here, we combine stepwise polymerization and thermal conversion to introduce in situ continuous hydrogen bonding sites in a polymer backbone without breaking the conjugation or introducing bulky softer side chains, benefiting the intrachain and interchain charge transport. We demonstrate that a regular sequence structure facilitated the formation of big nanofibers with a high degree of aggregation, providing the loose and porous thin film with simultaneously improved charge transport, stretchability, and self-healability. The mobility of damaged devices can be recovered to 81% after a healing treatment. Fully stretchable transistor based on the designed polymer exhibited a greatly enhanced mobility up to 1.08 square centimeters per volt per second under 100% strain, which is an unprecedented value and constitutes a major step for the development of intrinsically stretchable and healable semiconducting polymers.

Abstract
Electronic skins (e-skins) have seen intense research and rapid development in the past two decades. To mimic the capabilities of human skin, a multitude of flexible/stretchable sensors that detect physiological and environmental signals have been designed and integrated into functional systems. Recently, researchers have increasingly deployed machine learning and other artificial intelligence (AI) technologies to mimic the human neural system for the processing and analysis of sensory data collected by e-skins. Integrating AI has the potential to enable advanced applications in robotics, healthcare, and human-machine interfaces but also presents challenges such as data diversity and AI model robustness. In this review, we first summarize the functions and features of e-skins, followed by feature extraction of sensory data and different AI models. Next, we discuss the utilization of AI in the design of e-skin sensors and address the key topic of AI implementation in data processing and analysis of e-skins to accomplish a range of different tasks. Subsequently, we explore hardware-layer in-skin intelligence before concluding with an analysis of the challenges and opportunities in the various aspects of AI-enabled e-skins.

Abstract
Fabrics represent a unique platform for seamlessly integrating electronics into everyday experiences. The advancements in functionalizing fabrics at both the single fibre level and within constructed fabrics have fundamentally altered their utility. The revolution in materials, structures, and functionality at the fibre level enables intimate and imperceptible integration, rapidly transforming fibres and fabrics into next-generation wearable devices and systems. In this review, we explore recent scientific and technological breakthroughs in smart fibre-enabled fabrics. We examine common challenges and bottlenecks in fibre materials, physics, chemistry, fabrication strategies, and applications that shape the future of wearable electronics. We propose a closed-loop smart fibre-enabled fabric ecosystem encompassing proactive sensing, interactive communication, data storage and processing, real-time feedback, and energy storage and harvesting, intended to tackle significant challenges in wearable technology. Finally, we envision computing fabrics as sophisticated wearable platforms with system-level attributes for data management, machine learning, artificial intelligence, and closed-loop intelligent networks.

Abstract
Self-healing microelectronics are needed for costly applications with limited or without access. They are needed in fields such as space exploration to increase lifetime and decrease both costs and the environmental impact. While advanced self-healing mechanisms for polymers are numerous, practical ways for self-healing in metal films have yet to be found. A concept for an autonomous intrinsic self-healing metallic film system is developed, allowing the healing of cracks in metallic films on flexible substrates. The concept relies on stabilizing metastable thin films with high mixing enthalpy via segregation barriers. This allows the films to possess autonomous intrinsic self-healing capabilities triggered by cracking at temperatures not detrimental to flexible microelectronics. The effect will be shown on metastable Mo1-xAgx thin films, stabilized via a Mo segregation barrier. Without a segregation barrier, the system is known to exhibit spontaneous Ag particle formation on the surface. This property is controlled and directed to heal cracks and partially restore the electro-mechanical properties of the multilayer system. This mechanism opens up the field of self-healing thin metallic films that could profoundly impact the design of future microelectronics.

Abstract
Considering the global burden related to tissue and organ injuries or failures, self-healing hydrogels may be an attractive therapeutic alternative for the future. Self-healing hydrogels are highly hydrated 3D structures with the ability to self-heal after breaking, this property is attributable to a variety of dynamic non-covalent and covalent bonds that are able to re-linking within the matrix. Self-healing ability specially benefits minimal invasive medical treatments with cell-delivery support. Moreover, those tissue-engineered self-healing hydrogels network have demonstrated effectiveness for myriad purposes; for instance, they could act as delivery-platforms for different cargos (drugs, growth factors, cells, among others) in tissues such as bone, cartilage, nerve or skin. Besides, self-healing hydrogels have currently found their way into new and novel applications; for example, with the development of the self-healing adhesive hydrogels, by merely aiding surgical closing processes and by providing biomaterial-tissue adhesion. Furthermore, conductive hydrogels permit the stimuli and monitoring of natural electrical signals, which facilitated a better fitting of hydrogels in native tissue or the diagnosis of various health diseases. Lastly, self-healing hydrogels could be part of cyborganics - a merge between biology and machinery - which can pave the way to a finer healthcare devices for diagnostics and precision therapies.

Abstract
Recent advancements in biomimetics have spurred significant innovations in prosthetic limb development by leveraging the intricate designs and mechanisms found in nature. Biomimetics, also known as "nature-inspired engineering", involves studying and emulating biological systems to address complex human challenges. This comprehensive review provides insights into the latest trends in biomimetic prosthetics, focusing on leveraging knowledge from natural biomechanics, sensory feedback mechanisms, and control systems to closely mimic biological appendages. Highlighted breakthroughs include the integration of cutting-edge materials and manufacturing techniques such as 3D printing, facilitating seamless anatomical integration of prosthetic limbs. Additionally, the incorporation of neural interfaces and sensory feedback systems enhances control and movement, while technologies like 3D scanning enable personalized customization, optimizing comfort and functionality for individual users. Ongoing research efforts in biomimetics hold promise for further advancements, offering enhanced mobility and integration for individuals with limb loss or impairment. This review illuminates the dynamic landscape of biomimetic prosthetic technology, emphasizing its transformative potential in rehabilitation and assistive technologies. It envisions a future where prosthetic solutions seamlessly integrate with the human body, augmenting both mobility and quality of life.

Abstract
Soft robotics has received substantial attention due to its remarkable deformability, making it well-suited for a wide range of applications in complex environments, such as medicine, rescue operations, and exploration. Within this domain, the interaction of actuation and sensing is of utmost importance for controlling the movements and functions of soft robots. Nonetheless, current research predominantly focuses on isolated actuation and sensing capabilities, often neglecting the critical integration of these 2 domains to achieve intelligent functionality. In this review, we present a comprehensive survey of fundamental actuation strategies and multimodal actuation while also delving into advancements in proprioceptive and haptic sensing and their fusion. We emphasize the importance of integrating actuation and sensing in soft robotics, presenting 3 integration methodologies, namely, sensor surface integration, sensor internal integration, and closed-loop system integration based on sensor feedback. Furthermore, we highlight the challenges in the field and suggest compelling directions for future research. Through this comprehensive synthesis, we aim to stimulate further curiosity among researchers and contribute to the development of genuinely intelligent soft robots.

Abstract
Materials with high stretchability and conductivity are used to fabricate stretchable electronics. Self-healing capability and four-dimensional (4D) printability are becoming increasingly important for these materials to facilitate their recovery from damage and endow them with stimuli-response properties. However, it remains challenging to design a single material that combines these four strengths. Here, a dually crosslinked hydrogel is developed by combining a covalently crosslinked acrylic acid (AAC) network and Fe3+ ions through dynamic and reversible ionically crosslinked coordination. The remarkable electrical sensitivity (a gauge factor of 3.93 under a strain of 1500%), superior stretchability (a fracture strain up to 1700%), self-healing ability (a healing efficiency of 88% and 97% for the mechanical and electrical properties, respectively), and 4D printability of the hydrogel are demonstrated by constructing a strain sensor, a two-dimensional touch panel, and shape-morphing structures with water-responsive behavior. The hydrogel demonstrates vast potential for applications in stretchable electronics.

Abstract
Four amino acid-bearing acrylamides, N-acryloyl-l-threonine (AThrOH), N-acryloyl-l-glutamic acid (AGluOH), N-acryloyl-l-phenylalanine (APheOH), and N-acryloyl-l, l-diphenylalanine (APhePheOH), were selected for copolymerization with n-butyl acrylate (nBA) to develop amino acid-based self-healable copolymers. A series of copolymers comprising amino acid-bearing acrylamides and nBA with tunable comonomer compositions and molecular weights were synthesized by free radical and reversible addition-fragmentation chain-transfer copolymerization. Self-healing and mechanical properties originated from the noncovalent bonds between the carboxyl, hydroxyl, and amide groups, and π-π stacking interactions among the amino acid residues in the side chains were evaluated. Among these copolymers, P(nBA-co-AGluOH) with suitable comonomer compositions and molecular weights (nBA : AGluOH = 82 : 18, Mn = 18 300, Mw/Mn = 2.58) exhibited good mechanical properties (modulus of toughness = 17.3 MJ m-3) and self-healing under ambient conditions. The multiple noncovalent bonds of P(nBA-co-AGluOH)s were also efficient in improving the optical properties with an enhanced refractive index and good transparency.

Abstract
Self-healing hydrogels are in high demand for wearable sensing applications due to their remarkable deformability, high ionic and electrical conductivity, self-adhesiveness to human skin, as well as resilience to both mechanical and electrical damage. However, these hydrogels face challenges such as delayed healing times and unavoidable electrical hysteresis, which limit their practical effectiveness. Here, we introduce a self-healing hydrogel that exhibits exceptionally rapid healing with a recovery time of less than 0.12 s and an ultralow electrical hysteresis of less than 0.64% under cyclic strains of up to 500%. This hydrogel strikes an ideal balance, without notable trade-offs, between properties such as softness, deformability, ionic and electrical conductivity, self-adhesiveness, response and recovery times, durability, overshoot behavior, and resistance to nonaxial deformations such as twisting, bending, and pressing. Owing to this unique combination of features, the hydrogel is highly suitable for long-term, durable use in wearable sensing applications, including monitoring body movements and electrophysiological activities on the skin.

Abstract
"Self-healing" has emerged as a concept to increase the functional stability and durability of polymer materials in applications and thus to benefit the sustainability of polymer-based technologies. Recently, van der Waals (vdW)-driven "self-healing" of sequence-controlled acrylate-based copolymers due to "key-and-lock"- or "ring-and-lock"-type interactions has generated considerable interest as a viable route toward engineering polymers with "self-healing" ability. This contribution systematically evaluates the time, temperature, and composition dependence of the mechanical recovery of acrylate-based copolymer and homopolymer systems subject to cut-and-adhere testing. "Self-healing" in n-butyl acrylate/methyl methacrylate (BA/MMA)- or n-butyl acrylate/styrene (BA/Sty)-based copolymers with varying composition and sequence is found to correlate with the bulk viscoelastic properties of materials and to follow a similar trend as other tested acrylate-based homo- and copolymers. This suggests that "self-healing" in this class of materials is more related to the chain dynamics of bulk materials rather than composition- or sequence-dependent specific interactions.

Abstract
Soft robotic bodies are susceptible to mechanical fatigue, punctures, electrical breakdown, and aging, which can result in the degradation of performance or unexpected failure. To overcome these challenges, a soft self-healing robot is created using a thermoplastic methyl thioglycolate-modified styrene-butadiene-styrene (MG-SBS) elastomer tube fabricated by melt-extrusion, to allow the robot to self-heal autonomously at room temperature. After repeated damage and being separated into several parts, the robot is able to heal its stiffness and elongation to break to enable almost complete recovery of robot performance after being allowed to heal at room temperature for 24 h. The self-healing capability of the robot is examined across the material scale to robot scale by detailed investigations of the healing process, healing efficiency, mechanical characterization of the robot, and assessment of dynamic performance before and after healing. The self-healing robot is driven by a new micro two-way shape-memory alloy (TWSMA) spring actuator which achieved a crawling speed of 21.6 cm/min, equivalent to 1.57 body length per minute. An analytical model of the robot is created to understand the robot dynamics and to act as an efficient tool for self-healing robot design and optimization. This work therefore provides a new methodology to create efficient, robust, and damage-tolerant soft robots.

Abstract
Advancements in mycelium technology, stemming from fungal electronics and the development of living mycelium composites and skins, have opened new avenues in the fusion of biological and artificial systems. This paper explores an experimental endeavour that successfully incorporates living, self-regenerating, and reactive Ganoderma sessile mycelium into a model cyborg figure, creating a bio-cybernetic entity. The mycelium, cultivated using established techniques, was homogeneously grown on the cyborg model's surface, demonstrating robust reactivity to various stimuli such as light exposure and touch. This innovative merger points towards the future of sustainable biomaterials and the potential integration of these materials into new and existing technologies.

Abstract
Cardiotoxicity, characterized by adverse impacts on normal heart function due to drug exposure, is a significant concern due to the potentially serious side effects associated with various pharmaceuticals. It is essential to detect the cardiotoxicity of a drug as early as possible in the testing phase of a medical composite. Therefore, there is a pressing need for more reliable in vitro models that accurately mimic the in vivo conditions of cardiac biopsies. In a functional beating heart, cardiac muscle cells are under the effect of static and cyclic stretches. It has been demonstrated that cultured cardiac biopsies can benefit from external mechanical loads that resemble the in vivo condition, increasing the probability of cardiotoxicity detection in the early testing stages. In this work, a biosensor is designed and fabricated to allow for stretch monitoring in biopsies and tissue cultures using an innovative sensing mechanism. The detection setup is based on a biocompatible, thin, flexible membrane-where the samples are attached-which is used as an optical waveguide to detect pressure-caused shape changes and stretches. Various prototypes have been fabricated with a cost-effective process, and different measurements have been carried out to experimentally validate the proposed measurement technique. From these evaluations, stretches of up to 1.5% have been measured, but the performed simulations point towards the possibility of expanding the considered technique up to 10-30% stretches.

The deep ocean, Earth's untouched expanse, presents immense challenges for exploration due to its extreme pressure, temperature, and darkness. Unlike traditional marine robots that require specialized metallic vessels for protection, deep-sea species thrive without such cumbersome pressure-resistant designs. Their pressure-adaptive forms, unique propulsion methods, and advanced senses have inspired innovation in designing lightweight, compact soft machines. This perspective addresses challenges, recent strides, and design strategies for bioinspired deep-sea soft robots. Drawing from abyssal life, it explores the actuation, sensing, power, and pressure resilience of multifunctional deep-sea soft robots, offering game-changing solutions for profound exploration and operation in harsh conditions.

Abstract
We live in a time of unprecedented scientific and human progress while being increasingly aware of its negative impacts on our planet's health. Aerial, terrestrial, and aquatic ecosystems have significantly declined putting us on course to a sixth mass extinction event. Nonetheless, the advances made in science, engineering, and technology have given us the opportunity to reverse some of our ecosystem damage and preserve them through conservation efforts around the world. However, current conservation efforts are primarily human led with assistance from conventional robotic systems which limit their scope and effectiveness, along with negatively impacting the surroundings. In this perspective, we present the field of bioinspired robotics to develop versatile agents for future conservation efforts that can operate in the natural environment while minimizing the disturbance/impact to its inhabitants and the environment's natural state. We provide an operational and environmental framework that should be considered while developing bioinspired robots for conservation. These considerations go beyond addressing the challenges of human-led conservation efforts and leverage the advancements in the field of materials, intelligence, and energy harvesting, to make bioinspired robots move and sense like animals. In doing so, it makes bioinspired robots an attractive, non-invasive, sustainable, and effective conservation tool for exploration, data collection, intervention, and maintenance tasks. Finally, we discuss the development of bioinspired robots in the context of collaboration, practicality, and applicability that would ensure their further development and widespread use to protect and preserve our natural world.

Abstract
The effect of sequence structure on the self-healing and shape-memory properties of copolymer-tethered brush particle films was investigated and compared to linear copolymer analogs. Poly(n-butyl acrylate-co-methyl methacrylate), P(BA-co-MMA), and linear and brush analogs with controlled gradient and statistical sequence were synthesized by atom transfer radical polymerization (ATRP). The effect of sequence on self-healing in BA/MMA copolymer brush particle hybrids followed similar trends as for linear analogs. Most rapid restoration of mechanical properties was found for statistical copolymer sequence; an increase of the high Tg (MMA) component provided a path to raise the material's modulus while retaining self-heal ability. Creep testing revealed profound differences between linear and brush systems. While linear copolymers featured substantial viscous deformation when exposed to constant stress in the linear regime, brush analogs displayed minimal permanent deformation and featured shape restoration. The reduction of flow was interpreted to be a consequence of slow cooperative relaxation due to the complex microstructure of brush particle hybrids in which long-range motions are constrained through entanglements and slow-diffusing particle cores. The rubbery-like response imparts BA/MMA copolymer brush material systems concurrent "shape-memory" and "self-heal" capability. This ability to "recall-and-repair" could find application in the design of functional hybrid materials, for example, for soft robotics.

Abstract
Because of their superior performance, flexible strain sensors are used in a wide range of applications, including medicine and health, human-computer interaction, and precision manufacturing. Flexible strain sensors outperform conventional silicon-based sensors in high-strain environments. However, most current studies report complex flexible sensor preparation processes, and research focuses on enhancing and improving one parameter or property of the sensors, ignoring the feasibility of flexible strain sensors for applications in various fields. Since the mechanical properties of flexible sensors can be well combined with rubber conveyor belts, in this work polydimethylsiloxane (PDMS) was used as a flexible substrate by a simple way of multiple drop coating. Graphene-based flexible strain sensor films that can be used for strain detection at the joints of steel cord core conveyor belts were successfully fabricated. The results of the tests show that the sensor has a high sensitivity and can achieve a fast response (response time: 43 ms). Furthermore, the sensor can still capture the conveyor belt strain after withstanding high pressure (1.2-1.4 MPa) and high temperature (150 °C) during the belt vulcanization process. This validates the feasibility of using flexible strain sensors in steel wire core conveyor belts and has some potential for detecting abnormal strains in steel wire core conveyor belt, broadening the application field of flexible sensors.

Abstract
Ion gels are an emerging class of polymer gels in which a three-dimensional polymer network swells with an ionic liquid. Ion gels have drawn considerable attention in various fields such as energy and biotechnology owing to their excellent properties including nonvolatility, nonflammability, high ionic conductivity, and high thermal and electrochemical stability. Since the first report on ion gels (published ∼30 years ago), diverse functional ion gels exhibiting impressive physicochemical properties have been reported. In this review, recent developments in functional ion gels that can modulate their physical properties in response to environmental conditions are outlined. Stimuli-responsive ion gels that can adaptively undergo phase transitions in response to thermal and light stimuli are initially discussed, followed by an evaluation of diverse self-healing ion gels that can spontaneously mend mechanical damage through judiciously designed ion-gel networks.

Abstract
Here, we demonstrate for the first time the ability of a porous π-conjugated semiconducting polymer film to enable facile electrolyte penetration through vertically stacked redox-active polymer layers, thereby enabling electrochromic switching between p-type and/or n-type polymers. The polymers P1 and P2, with structures diketopyrrolopyrrole (DPP)-πbridge-3,4,-ethylenedioxythiophene (EDOT)-πbridge [πbridge = 2,5-thienyl for P1 and πbridge = 2,5-thiazolyl for P2] are selected as the p-type polymers and N2200 (a known naphthalenediimide-dithiophene semiconductor) as the n-type polymer. Single-layer porous and dense (control) polymer films are fabricated and extensively characterized using optical microscopy, atomic force microscopy, scanning electron microscopy, and grazing incidence wide-angle X-ray scattering. The semiconducting films are then incorporated into single and multilayer electrochromic devices (ECDs). It is found that when a p-type (P2) porous top layer is used in a multilayer ECD, it enables electrolyte penetration to the bottom layer, enabling oxidative electrochromic switching of the P1 bottom layer at low potentials (+0.4 V versus +1.2 V with dense P2). Importantly, when using a porous P1 as the top layer with an n-type N2200 bottom layer, dynamic oxidative-reductive electrochromic switching is also realized. These results offer a proof of concept for development of new types of multilayer electrochromic devices where precise control of the semiconductor film morphology and polymer electronic structure is essential.

Abstract
Self-healing soft robots show enormous potential to recover functional performance after healing the damages. However, healing in these systems is limited by the recontact of the fracture surfaces. This paper presents for the first time a shape memory alloy (SMA) wire-reinforced soft bending actuator made out of a castor oil-based self-healing polymer, with the incorporated ability to recover from large incisions via shape memory assisted healing. The integrated SMA wires serve three major purposes; (i) Large incisions are closed by contraction of the current-activated SMA wires that are integrated into the chamber. These pull the fracture surfaces into contact, enabling the healing. (ii) The heat generated during the activation of the SMA wires is synergistically exploited for accelerating the healing. (iii) Lastly, during pneumatic actuation, the wires constrain radial expansion and one-side longitudinal extension of the soft chamber, effectuating the desired actuator bending motion. This novel approach of healing is studied via mechanical and ultrasound tests on the specimen level, as well as via bending characterization of the pneumatic robot in multiple damage healing cycles. This technology allows soft robots to become more independent in terms of their self-healing capabilities from human intervention.

Abstract
Dielectric elastomer actuators (DEAs) are widely exploited for actuating soft machines and granting soft robots with capability to operate in both underwater and on-land environments is important to make them adapt to more complex situations. Here, a DEA-driven, highly robust, amphibious imperceptible soft robot (AISR) based on an all-environment stable ionic conductive material is presented. A soft, self-healable, all-environment stable ionic conductor is developed by introducing cooperative ion-dipole interactions to provide underwater stability as well as efficient suppression of ion penetration. By tuning molecular structures of the material, a 50-time device lifetime increase compared with unmodified [EMI][TFSI]-based devices and excellent underwater actuating performance is achieved. With the synthesized ionic electrode, the DEA-driven soft robot exhibits amphibious functionality to traverse hydro-terrestrial regions. When encountering damage, the robot shows good resilience and can self-heal underwater and it also exhibits imperceptibility to light, sound, and heat.

Abstract
Humans rely increasingly on sensors to address grand challenges and to improve quality of life in the era of digitalization and big data. For ubiquitous sensing, flexible sensors are developed to overcome the limitations of conventional rigid counterparts. Despite rapid advancement in bench-side research over the last decade, the market adoption of flexible sensors remains limited. To ease and to expedite their deployment, here, we identify bottlenecks hindering the maturation of flexible sensors and propose promising solutions. We first analyze challenges in achieving satisfactory sensing performance for real-world applications and then summarize issues in compatible sensor-biology interfaces, followed by brief discussions on powering and connecting sensor networks. Issues en route to commercialization and for sustainable growth of the sector are also analyzed, highlighting environmental concerns and emphasizing nontechnical issues such as business, regulatory, and ethical considerations. Additionally, we look at future intelligent flexible sensors. In proposing a comprehensive roadmap, we hope to steer research efforts towards common goals and to guide coordinated development strategies from disparate communities. Through such collaborative efforts, scientific breakthroughs can be made sooner and capitalized for the betterment of humanity.

Abstract
Van der Waals-driven self-healing in copolymers with "lock-and-key" architecture has emerged as a concept to endow engineering-type polymers with the capacity to recover from structural damage. Complicating the realization of "lock-and-key"-enabled self-healing is the tendency of copolymers to form nonuniform sequence distributions during polymerization reactions. This limits favorable site interactions and renders the evaluation of van der Waals-driven healing difficult. Here, methods for the synthesis of lock-and-key copolymers with prescribed sequence were used to overcome this limitation and enable the deliberate synthesis of "lock-and-key" architectures most conducive to self-healing. The effect of molecular sequence on the material's recovery behavior was evaluated for the particular case of three poly(n-butyl acrylate/methyl methacrylate) [P(BA/MMA)] copolymers with similar molecular weights, dispersity, and overall composition but with different sequences: alternating (alt), statistical (stat), and gradient (grad). They were synthesized using atom transfer radical polymerization (ATRP). Copolymers with alt and stat sequence displayed a 10-fold increase of recovery rate compared to the grad copolymer variant despite a similar overall glass transition temperature. Investigation with small-angle neutron scattering (SANS) revealed that rapid property recovery is contingent on a uniform microstructure of copolymers in the solid state, thus avoiding the pinning of chains in glassy MMA-rich cluster regions. The results delineate strategies for the deliberate design and synthesis of engineering polymers that combine structural and thermal stability with the ability to recover from structural damage.

Soft self-healing materials are compelling candidates for stretchable devices because of their excellent compliance, extensibility, and self-restorability. However, most existing soft self-healing polymers suffer from crack propagation and irreversible fatigue failure due to easy breakage of their dynamic amorphous, low-energy polymer networks. Herein, inspired by distinct structure-property relationship of biological tissues, a supramolecular interfacial assembly strategy of preparing soft self-healing composites with unprecedented crack propagation resistance is proposed by structurally engineering preferentially aligned lamellar structures within a dynamic and superstretchable poly(urea-ureathane) matrix (which is elongated to 24 750× its original length). Such a design affords a world-record fracture energy (501.6 kJ m-2 ), ultrahigh fatigue threshold (4064.1 J m-2 ), and outstanding elastic restorability (dimensional recovery from 13 times elongation), and preserving low modulus (1.2 MPa), high stretchability (3200%), and high room-temperature self-healing efficiency (97%). Thereby, the resultant composite represents the best of its kind and even surpasses most biological tissues. The lamellar 2D transition-metal carbide/carbonitride (MXene) structure also leads to a relatively high in-plane thermal conductivity, enabling composites as stretchable thermoconductive skins applied in joints of robotics to thermal dissipation. The present work illustrates a viable approach how autonomous self-healing, crack tolerance, and fatigue resistance can be merged in future material design.

Abstract
Methylated circulating DNAs (ctDNAs) have recently been reported as a promising biomarker for early cancer diagnostics, but limited tools are currently available for continuous and dynamic profiling of ctDNAs and their methylation levels, especially when such assays need to be conducted in point-of-care (POC) scenarios. Here, a self-healing bioelectronic patch (iMethy) is developed that combines transdermal interstitial fluid (ISF) extraction and field effect transistor-based (FET-based) biosensing for dynamic monitoring of methylated ctDNAs as a prognostic approach for cancer risk management. The projection micro-stereolithography-based 3D patterning of an Eutectic Gallium-Indium (EGaIn) circuit with an unprecedented 10 µm resolution enables the construction of self-healing EGaIn microfluidic circuits that remain conductive under 100% strain and self-healing under severe destruction. In combination with continuous transdermal ISF sampling of methylated ctDNAs, iMethy can detect ctDNAs as low as 10-16 m in cellular models and is capable of phenotypic analysis of tumor growth in rodent animals. As the first demonstration of a wearable device for real-time in vivo analysis of disease-indicative biomarkers, this proof-of-concept study well demonstrated the potential of the iMethy platform for cancer risk management based on dynamic transdermal surveillance of methylated ctDNAs via a painless and self-administrable procedure.

Abstract
Eutectic gallium-indium (EGaIn), a liquid metal with a melting point close to or below room temperature, has attracted extensive attention in recent years due to its excellent properties such as fluidity, high conductivity, thermal conductivity, stretchability, self-healing capability, biocompatibility, and recyclability. These features of EGaIn can be adjusted by changing the experimental condition, and various composite materials with extended properties can be further obtained by mixing EGaIn with other materials. In this review, not only the are unique properties of EGaIn introduced, but also the working principles for the EGaIn-based devices are illustrated and the developments of EGaIn-related techniques are summarized. The applications of EGaIn in various fields, such as flexible electronics (sensors, antennas, electronic circuits), molecular electronics (molecular memory, opto-electronic switches, or reconfigurable junctions), energy catalysis (heat management, motors, generators, batteries), biomedical science (drug delivery, tumor therapy, bioimaging and neural interfaces) are reviewed. Finally, a critical discussion of the main challenges for the development of EGaIn-based techniques are discussed, and the potential applications in new fields are prospected.

Abstract
The properties of self-healing polymers are traditionally identified through destructive testing. This means that the mechanics are explored in hindsight with either theoretical derivations and/or simulations. Here, a self-healing property evolution using energy functional dynamical (SPEED) model is proposed to predict and understand the mechanics of self-healing of polymers using images of cuts dynamically healing over time. Using machine learning, an energy functional minimization (EFM) model extracted an effective underlying dynamical system from a time series of two-dimensional cut images on a self-healing polymer of constant thickness. This model can be used to capture the physics behind the self-healing dynamics in terms of potential and interface energies. When combined with a static property prediction model, the SPEED model can predict the macroscopic evolution of material properties after training only on a small set of experimental measurements. Such temporal evolutions are usually inaccessible from pure experiments or computational modeling due to the need for destructive testing. As an example, we validate this approach on toughness measurements of an intrinsic self-healing conductive polymer by capturing over 100 000 image frames of cuts to build the machine learning (ML) model. The results show that the SPEED model can be applied to predict the temporal evolution of macroscopic properties using few measurements as training data.

Abstract
Supramolecular polymers are widely utilized and applied in self-assembly or self-healing materials, which can be repaired when damaged. Normally, the healing process is classified into two types, including extrinsic and intrinsic self-healable materials. Therefore, the aim of this work is to review the intrinsic self-healing strategy based on supramolecular interaction or non-covalent interaction and molecular recognition to obtain the improvement of mechanical properties. In this review, we introduce the main background of non-covalent interaction, which consists of the metal–ligand coordination, hydrogen bonding, π–π interaction, electrostatic interaction, dipole–dipole interaction, and host–guest interactions, respectively. From the perspective of mechanical properties, these interactions act as transient crosslinking points to both prevent and repair the broken polymer chains. For material utilization in terms of self-healing products, this knowledge can be applied and developed to increase the lifetime of the products, causing rapid healing and reducing accidents and maintenance costs. Therefore, the self-healing materials using supramolecular polymers or non-covalent interaction provides a novel strategy to enhance the mechanical properties of materials causing the extended cycling lifetime of products before replacement with a new one.

Abstract
Electronic skin (e-skin) has brought us great convenience and revolutionized our way of life. However, due to physical or chemical aging and damage, they will inevitably be degraded gradually with practical operation. The emergence of self-healing materials enables e-skins to achieve repairment of cracks and restoration of mechanical function by themselves, meeting the requirements of the era for building durable and self-healing electronic devices. This work reviews the current development of self-healing e-skins with various application scenarios, including motion sensor, human-machine interaction and soft robots. The new application fields and present challenges are discussed; meanwhile, thinkable strategies and prospects of future potential applications are conferenced.

Abstract
Materials able to regenerate after damage have been the object of investigation since the ancient times. For instance, self-healing concretes, able to resist earthquakes, aging, weather, and seawater have been known since the times of ancient Rome and are still the object of research. During the last decade, there has been an increasing interest in self-healing electronic materials, for applications in electronic skin (E-skin) for health monitoring, wearable and stretchable sensors, actuators, transistors, energy harvesting, and storage devices. Self-healing materials based on conducting polymers are particularly attractive due to their tunable high conductivity, good stability, intrinsic flexibility, excellent processability and biocompatibility. Here recent developments are reviewed in the field of self-healing electronic materials based on conducting polymers, such as poly 3,4-ethylenedioxythiophene (PEDOT), polypyrrole (PPy), and polyaniline (PANI). The different types of healing, the strategies adopted to optimize electrical and mechanical properties, and the various possible healing mechanisms are introduced. Finally, the main challenges and perspectives in the field are discussed.

Abstract
Elastic stretchability and function density represent two key figures of merits for stretchable inorganic electronics. Various design strategies have been reported to provide both high levels of stretchability and function density, but the function densities are mostly below 80%. While the stacked device layout can overcome this limitation, the soft elastomers used in previous studies could highly restrict the deformation of stretchable interconnects. Here, we introduce stacked multilayer network materials as a general platform to incorporate individual components and stretchable interconnects, without posing any essential constraint to their deformations. Quantitative analyses show a substantial enhancement (e.g., by ~7.5 times) of elastic stretchability of serpentine interconnects as compared to that based on stacked soft elastomers. The proposed strategy allows demonstration of a miniaturized electronic system (11 mm by 10 mm), with a moderate elastic stretchability (~20%) and an unprecedented areal coverage (~110%), which can serve as compass display, somatosensory mouse, and physiological-signal monitor.

Abstract
Inspired by physically adaptive, agile, reconfigurable and multifunctional soft-bodied animals and human muscles, soft actuators have been developed for a variety of applications, including soft grippers, artificial muscles, wearables, haptic devices and medical devices. However, the complex performance of biological systems cannot yet be fully replicated in synthetic designs. In this Review, we discuss new materials and structural designs for the engineering of soft actuators with physical intelligence and advanced properties, such as adaptability, multimodal locomotion, self-healing and multi-responsiveness. We examine how performance can be improved and multifunctionality implemented by using programmable soft materials, and highlight important real-world applications of soft actuators. Finally, we discuss the challenges and opportunities for next-generation soft actuators, including physical intelligence, adaptability, manufacturing scalability and reproducibility, extended lifetime and end-of-life strategies.

Abstract
Soft robots are, due to their softness, inherently safe and adapt well to unstructured environments. However, they are prone to various damage types. Self-healing polymers address this vulnerability. Self-healing soft robots can recover completely from macroscopic damage, extending their lifetime. For developing healable soft robots, various formative and additive manufacturing methods have been exploited to shape self-healing polymers into complex structures. Additionally, several novel manufacturing techniques, noted as (re)assembly binding techniques that are specific to self-healing polymers, have been created. Herein, the wide variety of processing techniques of self-healing polymers for robotics available in the literature is reviewed, and limitations and opportunities discussed thoroughly. Based on defined requirements for soft robots, these techniques are critically compared and validated. A strong focus is drawn to the reversible covalent and (physico)chemical cross-links present in the self-healing polymers that do not only endow healability to the resulting soft robotic components, but are also beneficial in many manufacturing techniques. They solve current obstacles in soft robots, including the formation of robust multi-material parts, recyclability, and stress relaxation. This review bridges two promising research fields, and guides the reader toward selecting a suitable processing method based on a self-healing polymer and the intended soft robotics application.

Abstract
Electronic devices with various functions bring great convenience and revolutionize the way we live. They are inevitable to degrade over time because of physical or chemical fatigue and damage during practical operation. To make these devices have the ability to autonomously heal from cracks and restore their mechanical and electrical properties, self-healing materials emerged as the time requires for constructing robust and self-healing electronic devices. Here the development of self-healing electronic devices with different functions, for example, energy harvesting, energy storage, sensing, and transmission, is reviewed. The new application scenarios and existing challenges are explored, and possible strategies and perspectives for future practical applications are discussed.
