Bioinspired Colloidal Photonic Composites: Fabrications and Emerging Applications

A penicillinase-modified poly(N-isopropylacrylamide-co-acrylamide) smart hydrogel biosensor with superior recyclability for sensitive and colorimetric detection of penicillin G

Antibiotics are widely used for treating bacterial infections. However, excessive or improper use of antibiotics can pose a serious threat to human health and water environments, and thus, developing cost-effective, portable and effective strategies to analyze and detect antibiotics is highly desired. Herein, we reported a responsive photonic hydrogel (RPH)-based optical biosensor (PPNAH) with superior recyclability for sensitive and colorimetric determination of a typical β-lactam antibiotic penicillin G (PG) in water. This sensor was composed of poly(N-isopropylacrylamide-co-acrylamide) smart hydrogel with incorporated penicillinase and Fe3O4@SiO2 colloidal photonic crystals (CPCs). The sensor could translate PG concentration signals into changes in the diffraction wavelength and structural color of the hydrogel. It possessed high sensitivity and selectivity to PG and excellent detection performances for other two typical β-lactam antibiotics. Most importantly, due to the unique thermosensitivity of the poly(N-isopropylacrylamide) moieties in the hydrogel, the PG-responded PPNAH sensor could be facilely regenerated via a simple physical method at least fifty times while without compromising its response performance. Besides, our sensor was suitable for monitoring the PG-contaminated environmental water and displayed satisfactory detection performances. Such a sensor possessed obvious advantages of superior recyclability, highly chemical stability, low production cost, easy fabrication, wide range of visual detection, simple and intuitive operation for PG detection, and environmental-friendliness, which holds great potential in sensitive and colorimetric detection of the PG residues in polluted water.

Patterned Photonic Actuators with Dynamic Shape-Morphing and Color-Changing Capabilities Fabricated by Athermal Embossing Technology

Stimuli-responsive patterned photonic actuators, characterized by their patterned nano/microscale structures and capacity to demonstrate synergistic color changes and shape morphing in response to external stimuli, have attracted intense scientific attention. However, traditional patterned photonic actuator systems still face limitations such as cumbersome and time-consuming preparation processes and small-scale deformations. Herein, we introduce a facile approach involving an athermal embossing technique to rapidly fabricate patterned photonic actuators based on near-infrared (NIR) light-responsive liquid crystal elastomers. The resulting patterned photonic actuators demonstrate remarkable features, including brilliant angle-dependent structural color, complex three-dimensional actuation, and good color durability under NIR light stimulation. As illustrative demonstrations of the proof-of-concept, we fabricate two light-fuelled patterned photonic soft actuators: a butterfly-inspired actuator that can produce wing-flapping dynamic changes in structural color, and an origami crane-shaped actuator with shape memory, structural color information storage, and dynamic display properties. This strategy provides distinct insights into the design and fabrication of various patterned photonic soft robotic devices and intelligent actuators.

Photon Management Enabled by Opal and Inverse Opal Photonic Crystals: from Photocatalysis to Photoluminescence Regulation

Light is a promising renewable energy source and can be converted into heat, electricity, and chemical energy. However, the efficiency of light-energy conversion is largely hindered by limited light-absorption coefficients and the low quantum yield of current-generation materials. Photonic crystals (PCs) can adjust the propagation and distribution of photons because of their unique periodic structures, which offers a compelling platform for photon management. The periodicity of materials with an alternating refractive index can be used to manipulate the dispersion of photons to generate the photonic bandgap (PBG), in which light is reflected. The slow photon effect, i. e., photon propagation at a reduced group velocity near the edges of the PBG, is widely regarded as another valuable optical property for manipulating light. Furthermore, multiple light scattering can increase the optical path, which is a vital optical property for PCs. Recently, the light reflected by PBG, the slow photon effect, and multiple light scattering have been exploited to improve light utilization efficiency in photoelectrochemistry, materials chemistry, and biomedicine to enhance light-energy conversion efficiency. In this review, the fabrication of opal or inverse opal PCs and the theory for improving the light utilization efficiency of photocatalysis, solar cells, and photoluminescence regulation are discussed. We envision photon management of opal or inverse opal PCs may provide a promising avenue for light-assisted applications to improve light-energy-conversion efficiency.

Colloidal Photonic Composites with a Long-Range Order by Hot-Pressing Polymer Brush-Grafted Silica Colloids

Colloidal photonic composites (CPCs) are unique optical materials that combine flexible and responsive polymers with colloidal photonic crystals, and they have promising applications in colorful displays, optical anticounterfeiting, and visual sensors. However, conventional self-assembly strategies for constructing CPCs via solvent evaporation have faced limitations due to the meticulous regulation required during the evaporation process and typically long preparation durations. Here, we present an external force method to achieve a long-range ordered arrangement in CPCs by hot-pressing poly(2-[[(butylamino)carbonyl]oxy]ethyl acrylate (PBCOE)) brush-grafted silica colloidal particles (SiO2-g-PBCOE). We show that the hot-pressing conditions (i.e., temperature and pressure) and the silica volume fraction (φsilica) of the SiO2-g-PBCOE colloidal particles play crucial roles in determining their ordering and optical properties. By optimization of the hot-pressing temperature up to 100 °C and pressure of 5 MPa, a long-range ordered arrangement of SiO2-g-PBCOE colloidal particles with a φsilica of 20.3% can be achieved. For the effect of structural features, our findings reveal that SiO2-g-PBCOE colloidal particles featuring a higher φsilica are more prone to obtain a long-range ordered arrangement compared to a lower φsilica under hot-pressing conditions at relatively low temperature and pressure (50 °C and 5 MPa), which is mainly attributed to the chain entanglement and hydrogen bonding interactions induced by grafted longer polymer brushes, leading to additional energy inputs and weakening the ordering. Significantly, the critical φsilica (φc) of SiO2-g-PBCOE colloidal particles is discerned, strongly influencing the optical properties of the hot-pressed films. Specifically, a hot-pressed SiO2-g-PBCOE film with a critical φsilica of 29.3% displays enhanced optical properties characterized by intensified reflection peaks, narrowed full width at half-maximum (FWHM), and brilliant structural colors. Notably, in this work, we reveal the mechanism of hot-pressing-driven core-shell colloidal particle ordering and the key factors affecting the ordering of colloidal particles, i.e., chain entanglement and hydrogen-bonding interactions, which play a crucial role in obtaining CPCs with controllable structures. Moreover, angle-dependent structural color is observed in the hot-pressed SiO2-g-PBCOE film with a φsilica content of 29.3% due to the unique attributes of the highly ordered arrangement, while the films exhibit mechanochromic properties due to chain entanglement and hydrogen bonding interactions. This work provides valuable insights into the rapid construction of highly ordered CPCs and establishes a solid foundation for external force-assisted ordering of colloidal particles.

Scalable production of structurally colored composite films by shearing supramolecular composites of polymers and colloids

Structurally colored composite films, composed of orderly arranged colloids in polymeric matrix, are emerging flexible optical materials, but their production is bottlenecked by time-consuming procedures and limited material choices. Here, we present a mild approach to producing large-scale structurally colored composite films by shearing supramolecular composites composed of polymers and colloids with supramolecular interactions. Leveraging dynamic connection and dissociation of supramolecular interactions, shearing force stretches the polymer chains and drags colloids to migrate directionally within the polymeric matrix with reduced viscous resistance. We show that meter-scale structurally colored composite films with iridescence color can be produced within several minutes at room temperature. Significantly, the tunability and diversity of supramolecular interactions allow this shearing approach extendable to various commonly-used polymers. This study overcomes the traditional material limitations of manufacturing structurally colored composite films by shearing method and opens an avenue for mildly producing ordered composites with commonly-available materials via supramolecular strategies.

Poly(4-vinylpyridine) and Poly(methacrylic acid) Particle Architectures for pH-Responsive and Mechanochromic Opal Films

While stimuli-responsive structural colors are commonly found in nature, mimicking these in artificial materials is challenging. Dynamically switchable and tunable coloration, however, is in high demand in widespread fields of applications, including advanced display and monitoring technologies, smart sensing, and anticounterfeiting. This work reports a scalable protocol for the synthesis of tailor-made core-shell particles and subsequent processing to opal films with iridescent, pH-responsive, and mechanochromic structural color. Novel monodisperse core-shell architectures based on hard polystyrene core particles are synthesized via stepwise emulsion polymerization in a starved-feed mode. The incorporation of 4-vinylpyridine and methacrylic acid as functional comonomers in the soft particle shell facilitates pH-responsive swelling and deswelling. Mechanically stable and well-ordered colloidal crystal films are obtained by the self-assembly of the particles during processing with the powerful melt-shear organization technique. Thereby obtained opal films show Bragg-scattering at the colloidal crystalline structure and exhibit brilliant green-turquoise to blue-violet reflection colors, dependent on the angle of view and illumination. Upon changes in the pH value or mechanical deformation, the reflected wavelength shifts by more than 100 nm, leading to intriguing changes in the visible structural color. Excellent reversibility is achieved by the subsequent application of a convenient UV cross-linking strategy, corroborating the high application potential of these advanced functional materials.

3D-Printed Biomimetic Structural Colors

Resolution control and expansibility have always been challenges to the fabrication of structural color materials. Here, a facile strategy to print cholesteric liquid crystal elastomers (CLCEs) into complex structural color patterns with variable resolution and enhanced expansibility is reported. A volatile solvent is introduced into the synthesized CLC oligomers, modifying its rheological properties and allowing direct-ink-writing (DIW) under mild conditions. The combination of printing shear flow and anisotropic deswelling of ink drives the CLC molecules into an ordered cholesteric arrangement. The authors meticulously investigate the influence of printing parameters to achieve resolution control over a wide range, allowing for the printing of multi-sized 1D or 2D patterns with constant quality. Furthermore, such solvent-cast direct-ink-writing (DIW) strategy is highly expandable and can be integrated easily into the DIW of bionic robots. Multi-responsive bionic butterfly and flower are printed with biomimetic in both locomotion and coloration. Such designs dramatically reduced the processing difficulty of precise full-color printing and expanded the capability of structural color materials to collaborate with other systems.

Hyperreflective photonic crystals created by shearing colloidal dispersions at ultrahigh volume fraction

Colloidal crystallization serves as one of the most economic and scalable production methods for photonic crystals. However, insufficient optical performance, nonuniformity and low reproducibility remain challenges for advanced high-value applications. In this study, we optimally formulate a photocurable dispersion of silica particles and apply shear flow to unify the orientation of the colloidal crystals, ensuring high optical performance and uniformity. The silica particles experience strong repulsion at ultrahigh volume fractions of 50% but demonstrate low mobility, leading to polycrystalline structures. Applying shear flow to the dispersions allows the silica particles to rearrange into larger crystalline domains with a unidirectional orientation along the flow. This shear-induced structural change produces absolute reflectivity at the stopband as high as 90% and a high transparency of 90% at off-resonant wavelengths with minimal diffusive scattering. Furthermore, the strong interparticle repulsion ensures a uniform volume fraction of particles throughout the dispersion, reducing deviations in the optical properties. We intricately micropattern the photocurable dispersions using photolithography. Additionally, the photonic films and patterns can be stacked to form multiple layers, displaying mixed structural colors and multiple reflectance peaks without sacrificing reflectivity. These superior photonic materials hold promise for various optical applications, including optical components and anticounterfeiting patches.

A Rule for Response Sensitivity of Structural-Color Photonic Colloids

To mimic natural photonic crystals having color regulation capacities dynamically responsive to the surrounding environment, periodic assembly structures have been widely constructed with response materials. Beyond monocomponent materials with stimulus responses, binary and multiphase systems generally offer extended color space and complex functionality. Constructing a rule for predicting response sensitivity can provide great benefits for the tailored design of intelligently responsive photonic materials. Here, we elucidate mathematical relationships between the response sensitivity of dynamically structural-color changes and the location distances of photonic co-phases in three-dimensional Hansen space that can empirically express the strength of their interaction forces, including dispersion force, polarity force, and hydrogen bonding. Such an empirical rule is proven to be applicable for some typical alcohols, acetone, and acetic acid regardless of their molecular structures, as verified by angle resolution spectroscopy, in situ infrared spectroscopy, and molecular simulation. The theoretical method we demonstrate provides rational access to custom-designed responsive structural coloration.

Stimulus-responsive nonclose-packed photonic crystals: fabrications and applications

Stimulus-responsive photonic crystals (PCs) possessing unconventional nonclosely packed structures have received growing attention due to their unique capability of mimicking the active structural colors of natural organisms (for example, chameleons' mechanochromic properties). However, there is rarely any systematic review regarding the progress of nonclose-packed photonic crystals (NPCs), involving their fabrication, working mechanisms, and applications. Herein, a comprehensive review of the fundamental principles and practical fabrication strategies of one/two/three-dimensional NPCs is summarized from the perspective of designing nonclose-packed structures. Subsequently, responsive NPCs with exciting functions and working mechanisms are sorted and delineated according to their diverse responses to physical (force, temperature, magnetic, and electric fields), chemical (ions, pH, vapors, and solvents), and biological (glucose, organophosphate, creatinine, and bacteria) stimuli. We then systematically introduced and discussed the applications of NPCs in sensors, printing, anticounterfeiting, display, optical devices, etc. Finally, the current challenges and development prospects for NPCs are presented. This review not only concludes the design principle for NPCs but also provides a significant basis for the exploration of next-generation NPCs.

Remarkable sol-gel transition of PNIPAm-based nanogels via large steric hindrance of side-chains

While the block/graft/branched structures are widely studied to favor the reversible physical gelation, there are no reports regarding the steric hindrance-induced sol-gel transition of PNIPAm-based nanogels above their phase transition temperature (Tp). Generally, the introduction of hydrophobic components into poly (N-isopropylacrylamide) (PNIPAm)-based nanogels only led to collapse and lower viscosity instead of the sol-gel transition upon heating above the Tp. Herein, the results of temperature-variable 1HNMR and FTIR confirm that the introduction of hydrophobic N-tert-butylacrylamide (TBA) with the large steric hindrance of side groups of N-tert-butyl to form NIPAm/TBA copolymer nanogels can dramatically slow down the dehydration of all the hydrophobic alkyl groups, thus resulting in the formation of thermally induced sol-gel transition above the Tp. Furthermore, the N-acrylamido-L-phenylalanine (APhe) monomer composed of a strongly water absorbing carboxyl group and a phenyl group with larger steric hindrance is studied to form P(NIPAm/TBA/APhe) terpolymer nanogels which can self-assemble into colorful colloidal crystals. Surprisingly, owing to the synergistic effect between the water absorbing carboxyl group and the steric hindrance group on the same side group, these colloidal crystals can achieve sol-gel transition above Tp, forming a physically crosslinked colorful hydrogel. This work is expected to greatly advance the design, synthesis, and application of the sol-gel transition of PNIPAm-based nanogel systems.

Rewritable Structurally Colored Paper Based on Hollow SiO2-Polyurethane Composite Photonic Crystal Film

Rewritable paper, which can be used multiple times as an effective solution for sustainable development and lessen the heavy environment pollution, has received widespread attention. A photonic crystal with dye-free character and tunable structure color has attracted significant interest in this area. Generally, handwriting on the photonic crystal structure containing a responsive polymer or hydrogel ingredient was based on the change of lattice spacing. It is necessary to enrich the diversities of color adjustment mechanism for further application. Herein, a flexible rewritable photonic crystal structurally colored paper with excellent mechanical strength based on the hollow SiO2 (h-SiO2) particle and polyurethane was developed. Owning to the varied optical response of h-SiO2 photonic crystal film in different solvents, handwriting on this paper was realized by applying polarity solvents such as EG as colorless ink directly, which could also be erased by resoaking the film in water. Writing and erasing on this paper were totally reversible. The color adjustment mechanism and the realization of handwriting on this paper are totally different from those of the previous reported photonic crystal-based rewritable paper. The combination of quick handwriting and flexibility is significant for potential application as rewritable paper.

A Photopatternable Conjugated Polymer with Thermal-Annealing-Promoted Interchain Stacking for Highly Stable Anti-Counterfeiting Materials

Photoresponsive polymers can be conveniently used to fabricate anti-counterfeiting materials through photopatterning. However, an unsolved problem is that ambient light and heat can damage anti-counterfeiting patterns on photoresponsive polymers. Herein, photo- and thermostable anti-counterfeiting materials are developed by photopatterning and thermal annealing of a photoresponsive conjugated polymer (MC-Azo). MC-Azo contains alternating azobenzene and fluorene units in the polymer backbone. To prepare an anti-counterfeiting material, an MC-Azo film is irradiated with polarized blue light through a photomask, and then thermally annealed under the pressure of a photonic stamp. This strategy generates a highly secure anti-counterfeiting material with dual patterns, which is stable to sunlight and heat over 200 °C. A key for the stability is that thermal annealing promotes interchain stacking, which converts photoresponsive MC-Azo to a photostable material. Another key for the stability is that the conjugated structure endows MC-Azo with desirable thermal properties. This study shows that the design of photopatternable conjugated polymers with thermal-annealing-promoted interchain stacking provides a new strategy for the development of highly stable and secure anti-counterfeiting materials.

Bio-inspired optical structures for enhancing luminescence

Luminescence is an essential signal for many plants, insects, and marine organisms to attract the opposite sex, avoid predators, and so on. Most luminescent living organisms have ingenious optical structures which can help them get high luminescent performances. These remarkable and efficient structures have been formed by natural selection from long-time evolution. Researchers keenly observed the enhanced luminescence phenomena and studied how these phenomena happen in order to learn the characteristics of bio-photonics. In this review, we summarize the optical structures for enhancing luminescence and their applications. The structures are classified according to their different functions. We focus on how researchers use these biological inspirations to enhance different luminescence processes, such as chemiluminescence (CL), photoluminescence (PL), and electroluminescence (EL). It lays a foundation for further research on the applications of luminescence enhancement. Furthermore, we give examples of luminescence enhancement by bio-inspired structures in information encryption, biochemical detection, and light sources. These examples show that it is possible to use bio-inspired optical structures to solve complex problems in optical applications. Our work will provide guidance for research on biomimetic optics, micro- and nano-optical structures, and enhanced luminescence.

Self-Assembly of Shark Scale-Patterned Tunable Superhydrophobic/Antifouling Structures with Visual Color Response

The stacked riblet-like shark scales, also known as dermal denticles, allow them to control the boundary layer flow over the skin and to reduce interactions with any biomaterial attached, which guide the design of antifouling coatings. Interestingly, shark scales are with a wide variation in geometry both across species and body locations, thereby displaying diversified antifouling capabilities. Inspired by the multifarious denticles, a stretchable shark scale-patterned silica hollow sphere colloidal crystal/polyperfluoroether acrylate-polyurethane acrylate composite film is engineered through a scalable self-assembly approach. Upon stretching, the patterned photonic crystals feature different short-term antibacterial and long-term anti-biofilm performances with a distinguished color response under varied elongation ratios. To gain a better understanding, the dependence of elongation ratio on antiwetting behaviors, antifouling performances, and structural color changes has also been investigated in this research.

A K+-sensitive photonic crystal hydrogel sensor for efficient visual monitoring of hyperkalemia/hypokalemia

Potassium ions (K⁺) play crucial roles in many biological processes. Abnormal K⁺ levels in the body are usually associated with physiological disorders or diseases, and thus, developing K⁺-sensitive sensors/devices is of great importance for disease diagnosis and health monitoring. Herein, we report a K⁺-sensitive photonic crystal hydrogel (PCH) sensor with bright structural colors for efficient monitoring of serum potassium. This PCH sensor consists of a poly(acrylamide-co-N-isopropylacrylamide-co-benzo-15-crown-5-acrylamide) (PANBC) smart hydrogel with embedded Fe₃O₄ colloidal photonic crystals (CPCs), which could strongly diffract visible light and endow the hydrogel with brilliant structural colors. The rich 15-crown-5 (15C5) units appended on the polymer backbone could selectively bind K⁺ ions to form stable 2 : 1 [15C5]₂/K⁺ supramolecular complexes. These bis-bidentate complexes served as physical crosslinkers to crosslink the hydrogel and contracted its volume, and thus reduced the lattice spacing of Fe₃O₄ CPCs and blue-shifted the light diffraction, and finally reported on the K⁺ concentrations by a color change of the PCH. Our fabricated PCH sensor possessed high K⁺ selectivity and pH- and thermo-sensitive response performances to K⁺. Most interestingly, the K⁺-responding PANBC PCH sensor could be conveniently regenerated via simple alternate flushing with hot/cold water due to the excellent thermosensitivity of the introduced PNIPAM moieties into the hydrogel. Such a PCH sensor provides a simple, low-cost and efficient strategy for visualized monitoring of hyperkalemia/hypokalemia, which will significantly promote the development of biosensors.

Heterogeneous Self-Assembly of a Single Type of Nanoparticle Modulated by Skin Formation

Self-assembly of colloidal nanoparticles has generated tremendous interest due to its widespread applications in structural colorations, sensors, and optoelectronics. Despite numerous strategies being developed to fabricate sophisticated structures, the heterogeneous self-assembly of a single type of nanoparticle in one step remains challenging. Here, facilitated by spatial confinement induced by a skin layer in a drying droplet, we achieve the heterogeneous self-assembly of a single type of nanoparticle by quickly evaporating a colloid-poly (ethylene glycol) (PEG) droplet. During the drying process, a skin layer forms at the droplet surface. The resultant spatial confinement assembles nanoparticles into face-centered-cubic (FCC) lattices with (111) and (100) plane orientations, generating binary bandgaps and two structural colors. The self-assembly of nanoparticles can be regulated by varying the PEG concentration so that FCC lattices with homo- or heterogeneous orientation planes can be prepared on demand. Besides, the approach is applicable for diverse droplet shapes, various substrates, and different nanoparticles. The one-pot general strategy breaks the requirements for multiple types of building blocks and predesigned substrates, extending the fundamental understanding underlying colloidal self-assembly.

Chameleon-Inspired Mechanochromic Photonic Elastomer with Brilliant Structural Color and Stable Optical Response for Human Motion Visualization

Flexible and stretchable electronic devices are indispensable parts of wearable devices. However, these electronics employ electrical transducing modes and lack the ability to visually respond to external stimuli, restricting their versatile application in the visualized human-machine interaction. Inspired by the color variation of chameleons' skin, we developed a series of novel mechanochromic photonic elastomers (PEs) with brilliant structural colors and a stable optical response. Typically, these PEs with a sandwich structure were prepared by embedding PS@SiO₂ photonic crystals (PCs)within the polydimethylsiloxane (PDMS) elastomer. Benefiting from this structure, these PEs exhibit not only bright structural colors, but also superior structural integrity. Notably, they possess excellent mechanochromism through lattice spacing regulation, and their optical responses are stably maintained even when suffering from 100 stretching-releasing cycles, showing superior stability and reliability and excellent durability. Moreover, a variety of patterned PEs were successfully obtained through a facile mask method, which provides great inspiration to create intelligent patterns and displays. Based on these merits, such PEs can be utilized as visualized wearable devices for detecting various human joint movements in real time. This work offers a new strategy for realizing visualized interactions based on PEs, showing huge application prospects in photonic skins, soft robotics, and human-machine interactions.

Cholesteric Liquid Crystal Polymeric Coatings for Colorful Artificial Muscles and Motile Humidity Sensor Skin Integrated with Magnetic Composites

Structural colorful cholesterics show impressive susceptibility to external stimulation, leading to applications in electro/mechano-chromic devices. However, out-of-plane actuation of structural colorful actuators based on cholesterics and the integration with other stimulation remains underdeveloped. Herein, colorful actuators and motile humidity sensors are developed using humidity-responsive cholesteric liquid crystal networks (CLCNs) and magnetic composites. The developed colorful actuator can exhibit synergistic out-of-plane shape morphing and color change in response to humidity, with CLCNs as colorful artificial muscles. Through the integration with magnetic control, the motile sensor can be navigated to open and confined spaces with the aid of friction to detect local relative humidity. The integration of multi-stimulation actuation of cholesteric magnetic actuators will expand the research frontier of structural colorful actuators and motile sensors for confined spaces.

Swarming Responsive Photonic Nanorobots for Motile-Targeting Microenvironmental Mapping and Mapping-Guided Photothermal Treatment

Micro/nanorobots can propel and navigate in many hard-to-reach biological environments, and thus may bring revolutionary changes to biomedical research and applications. However, current MNRs lack the capability to collectively perceive and report physicochemical changes in unknown microenvironments. Here we propose to develop swarming responsive photonic nanorobots that can map local physicochemical conditions on the fly and further guide localized photothermal treatment. The RPNRs consist of a photonic nanochain of periodically-assembled magnetic Fe3O4 nanoparticles encapsulated in a responsive hydrogel shell, and show multiple integrated functions, including energetic magnetically-driven swarming motions, bright stimuli-responsive structural colors, and photothermal conversion. Thus, they can actively navigate in complex environments utilizing their controllable swarming motions, then visualize unknown targets (e.g., tumor lesion) by collectively mapping out local abnormal physicochemical conditions (e.g., pH, temperature, or glucose concentration) via their responsive structural colors, and further guide external light irradiation to initiate localized photothermal treatment. This work facilitates the development of intelligent motile nanosensors and versatile multifunctional nanotheranostics for cancer and inflammatory diseases.

Practical Preparation of Elastomer-Immobilized Nonclose-Packed Colloidal Photonic Crystal Films with Various Uniform Colors

Colloidal photonic crystals, which are three-dimensional periodic structures of monodisperse submicron-sized particles, are expected to be suitable for novel photonic applications and color materials. In particular, nonclose-packed colloidal photonic crystals immobilized in elastomers exhibit significant potential for use in tunable photonic applications and strain sensors that detect strain based on color change. This paper reports a practical method for preparing elastomer-immobilized nonclose-packed colloidal photonic crystal films with various uniform Bragg reflection colors using one kind of gel-immobilized nonclose-packed colloidal photonic crystal film. The degree of swelling was controlled by the mixing ratio of the precursor solutions, which used a mixture of solutions with high and low affinities for the gel film as the swelling solvent. This facilitated color tuning over a wide range, enabling the facile preparation of elastomer-immobilized nonclose-packed colloidal photonic crystal films with various uniform colors via subsequent photopolymerization. The present preparation method can contribute to the development of practical applications of elastomer-immobilized tunable colloidal photonic crystals and sensors.

Supramolecular Photonic Hydrogel for High-Sensitivity Alkaline Phosphatase Detection via Synergistic Driving Force

Structurally-colored photonic hydrogels which are fabricated by introducing hydrogels into thin films or photonic crystal structures are promising candidates for biosensing. Generally, the design of photonic hydrogel biosensors is based on the sensor-analyte interactions induced charge variation within the hydrogel matrix, or chemically grafting binding sites onto the polymer chains, to achieve significant volume change and color variation of the photonic hydrogel. However, relatively low anti-interference capability or complicated synthesis hinder the facile and low-cost fabrication of high-performance photonic hydrogel biosensors. Here, a facilely prepared supramolecular photonic hydrogel biosensor is developed for high-sensitivity detection of alkaline phosphatase (ALP), which is an extensively considered clinical biomarker for a variety of diseases. Responding to ALP results in the broken supramolecular crosslinking and thus increased lattice distancing of the photonic hydrogel driven by synergistic repulsive force between nanoparticles embedded in photonic crystal structure and osmotic swelling pressure. The biosensor shows sensitivity of 7.3 nm spectral shift per mU mL^-1 ALP, with detection limit of 0.52 mU mL^-1 . High-accuracy colorimetric detection can be realized via a smartphone, promoting point-of-care sensing and timely diagnosis of related pathological conditions.

AIE-doped Poly(Ionic Liquid) Photonic Spheres for the Discrimination of Psychoactive Substances

Drugs of abuse has drawn intense attention due to increasing concerns to public health and safety. The construction of a sensing platform with the capability to identify them remains a big challenge because of the limitations of synthetic complexity, sensing scope and receptor extendibility. Here a kind of poly(ionic liquid) (PIL) photonic crystal spheres doped with aggregation-induced emission (AIE) luminogens was developed. As diverse noncovalent interactions involve in PIL moieties, the single sphere shows different binding affinity to a broad range of psychoactive substances. Furthermore, the dual-channel signals arising from photonic crystal structures and sensitive AIE-luminogens provide high-dimensional information for discriminative detection of targets, even for molecules with slight structural differences. More importantly, such single sphere sensing platform could be flexibly customized through ion-exchange, showing great extendibility to fabricate high-efficiency/high-throughput sensing arrays without tedious synthesis.

Photonic Lignin with Tunable and Stimuli-Responsive Structural Color

Due to the growing sustainability and health requirements, structural color materials fabricated with functional natural polymers have attracted increasing attention in advanced optical and biomedical fields. Lignin has many attractive features such as great biocompatibility, ultraviolet resistance, antioxidant property, and thermostability, making it a promising natural resource to be fabricated as functional structural color materials. However, to date, the utilization of lignin as the building block for structural color materials is still a challenge due to its disordered structure. Herein, we present a strategy to transform disordered lignin into ordered "photonic lignin", in which monodisperse lignin colloidal spheres are prepared via solvent/antisolvent self-assembly, and then the periodic structure is constructed by centrifugal effect. The photonic lignin exhibits structural colors that are tunable by modulating the diameter of lignin colloidal spheres. We further demonstrate the application of photonic lignin as a natural polymer-based coating that shows bright, angle-independent, and stimuli-responsive structural colors. Moreover, the cytotoxicity assay indicates the excellent biocompatibility of photonic lignin with human skin, blood vessels, digestive systems, and other tissues, which demonstrates the great potential of photonic lignin in the applications such as implanted/wearable optical devices, advanced cosmetics, and smart food packaging.

Heterogeneous Structural Color Conductive Photonic Organohydrogel Fibers with Alternating Single and Dual Networks

Intelligent interactive electronic devices can dynamically respond to and visualize various stimuli, promoting the rapid development of flexible electronics. In this paper, an alternating single- and dual-network design strategy was developed for ingeniously constructing an interactive electronic fiber sensor with heterogeneous structural color (HSCEF sensor). The resulting sensor can rapidly output the synchronous electrical and optical dual signals under strain by adjusting the transport distance of conductive ions and the lattice spacing of the photonic crystal (∼200 ms). Meanwhile, the addition of low-freezing-point glycerol endowed the HSCEF sensor with excellent low-temperature tolerance (-25 °C) and cyclic stability. Notably, benefiting from the alternating single- and dual-network structure, the HSCEF sensor exhibits attractive heterogeneous structural color, which achieves colorimetric changes in the full visible light region with high mechanochromic sensitivity (2.25 nm %^-1) and large wavelength shift (Δλ ∼ 225 nm). An intelligent wearable interactive sensor is finally used for real-time dynamic detection of joint movements, realizing precise resolution of different amplitudes. This work provides a general strategy to transform conventional photonic gels into heterogeneous structural color ones, and the developed new interactive sensor with rich optical information could be further used for visual health and exercise monitoring, intelligent soft robotics, wearable sensors, etc.

Self-Propelled Structural Color Cylindrical Micromotors for Heavy Metal Ions Adsorption and Screening

Water contamination resulting from heavy metal ions (HMIs) poses a severe threat to public health and the ecosystem. Attempts are tending to develop functional materials to realize efficient and intelligent adsorption of HMIs. Herein, self-propelled structural color cylindrical micromotors (SCCMs) with reversible HMIs adsorption capacity and self-reporting property are presented. The SCCMs are fabricated by using platinum nanoparticles (Pt NPs) tagged responsive hydrogel of carboxymethyl chitosan (CMC) and polyacrylamide (PAM) to asymmetrically replicate tubular colloidal crystal templates (TCCTs). Owing to the self-propelled motion of the SCCMs, the enhancive ion-motor interactions bring significantly improved decontamination efficiency. Moreover, it is demonstrated that the SCCMs can realize quick and naked-eye-visible self-reporting during the adsorption/desorption process based on their responsive structure color variation and superior adsorption capacity. Thus, it is anticipated that such intelligent SCCMs can significantly facilitate the evolution of sensing assays and diverse environmental fields.

Solvent-Responsive Invisible Photonic Patterns with High Contrast for Fluorescence Emission Regulation and Anti-Counterfeiting

Invisible photonic patterns (IPPs) are photonic materials that can display hidden patterns under external stimulation and are attractive in anti-counterfeiting devices and information storage. In this work, we report a solvent-responsive invisible photonic pattern (SRIPP) with high contrast by polymerizing two monomers of acrylamide (AAm) and poly(ethylene glycol) methacrylate (PEGMA) with different solubility parameters in different regions of poly(hydroxyethyl methacrylate) photonic gels. The two regions with different solvent responsiveness can shrink and swell in the same environment, thus causing the colors of different regions of photonic gel to shift in opposite directions from the initial state. As a result, the contrast of photonic patterns is significantly improved, increasing naked-eye visualization. In addition, by introducing fluorescent substances into the photonic gel and adjusting the photonic band gap (PBG) of photonic gels, we realize the regulation of fluorescence emission and display of fluorescence patterns by utilizing different PBGs on the SRIPP. Dynamic solvent responsiveness patterns and fluorescence patterns are integrated into a photonic gel, showing great potential in information storage and multiple-mode anti-counterfeiting applications.

Toward High Sensitivity: Perspective on Colorimetric Photonic Crystal Sensors

The sensitivity of colorimetric photonic crystal (PC) sensors have been significantly improved with the advancement of deformable structural color materials, structures design, sensing signal analysis methods, and fabrication strategies. In this perspective, the strategies toward high-sensitivity colorimetric PC sensors are discussed, from the perspectives of molecular design, single sensor construction, and multisensor assembly, which include incorporation of flexible polymer chains, construction of strong sensor-analyte interactions, incorporation of more soft materials, construction of stimuli-angle/orientation relationship, design of colorimetric sensors in series, and assembly of colorimetric PC sensors in parallel. Based on these strategies, progress of high-sensitivity colorimetric PC sensors in recent years is summarized, in terms of mechano-sensors and chemo-/biosensors. Specifically, PC based optical-electrical dual-signal sensing devices are included. Finally, the future development and challenges of high-sensitivity colorimetric PC sensors are presented, in regards to deformable properties, optical properties, analysis methods, and fabrication strategies.
