Sustainable and Inexpensive Polydimethylsiloxane Sponges for Daytime Radiative Cooling

Anti-UV Passive Radiative Cooling Chiral Nematic Liquid Crystal Films for Thermal Management

Passive radiative cooling (PRC) can spontaneously dissipate heat to outer space through atmospheric transparent windows, providing a promising path to meet sustainable development goals. However, achieving simultaneously high transparency, color-customizable, and thermal management of PRC anti ultraviolet (anti-UV) films remains a challenge. Herein, a simple strategy is proposed to utilize liquid crystalline polymer, with high mid-infrared emissive, forming customizable structural color film by molecular self-assembly and polymerization-induced pitch gradient, which guarantees the balance of transparency in visible spectrum and sunlight reflection, rendering anti-UV colored window for thermal management. By performing tests, temperature fall of 5.4 and 7.9 °C are demonstrated at noon with solar intensity of 717 W m-2 and night, respectively. Vivid red-, green-, blue-structured colors, and colorless films are designed and implemented to suppress the solar input and control the effective visible light transmissivity considering the efficiency function of human vision. In addition, temperature rise of 11.1 °C is achieved by applying an alternating current field on the PRC film. This study provides a new perspective on the thermal management and aesthetic functionalities of smart windows and wearables.

Large-Scale, Mechanically Robust, Solvent-Resistant, and Antioxidant MXene-Based Composites for Reliable Long-Term Infrared Stealth

MXene-based thermal camouflage materials have gained increasing attention due to their low emissivity, however, the poor anti-oxidation restricts their potential applications under complex environments. Various modification methods and strategies, e.g., the addition of antioxidant molecules and fillers have been developed to overcome this, but the realization of long-term, reliable thermal camouflage using MXene network (coating) with excellent comprehensive performance remains a great challenge. Here, a MXene-based hybrid network comodified with hyaluronic acid (HA) and hyperbranched polysiloxane (HSi) molecules is designed and fabricated. Notably, the presence of appreciated HA molecules restricts the oxidation of MXene sheets without altering infrared stealth performance, superior to other water-soluble polymers; while the HSi molecules can act as efficient cross-linking agents to generate strong interactions between MXene sheets and HA molecules. The optimized MXene/HA/HSi composites exhibit excellent mechanical flexibility (folded into crane structure), good water/solvent resistance, and long-term stable thermal camouflage capability (with low infrared emissivity of ≈0.29). The long-term thermal camouflage reliability (≈8 months) under various outdoor weathers and the scalable coating capability of the MXene-coated textile enable them to disguise the IR signal of various targets in complex environments, indicating the great promise of achieved material for thermal camouflage, IR stealth, and counter surveillance.

"Flexible-strong" polylactic acid porous membrane via tailored polymerization degree of lactic acid side-chains grafting for passive daytime radiative cooler

Aerogel possesses the advantages of high specific surface area, low density, and high porosity, which have shown great application in thermal regulation due to its efficient light scattering capability. However, traditional polymer-based aerogels have poor mechanical properties and lack ductility in outdoor applications, the cooling efficiency of the material is easily affected by damage during transportation, installation, and environmental factors. In this work, combining the porous nature of aerogels and the high ductility of membranes, a polylactic acid-based porous membrane cooler was developed by combining a regular honeycomb surface porous structure design and physical/chemical modification to enhance flexibility, using a simple non-solvent induced phase separation method. This porous membrane exhibits both super-flexibility (116 % elongation at break) and porous characteristics. It achieves a sub-ambient temperature decrease of 4-6 °C under direct sunlight. The optimized porous membrane demonstrates high solar reflectance (94 % of peak reflectivity, 90 % of average reflectivity) and strong infrared emissivity (96 % of peak emissivity, 91 % of average emissivity), it also maintains a solar peak reflectivity of 91 % under 100 % tensile strain and 1000 bending cycles, the cooler still maintains a cooling effect of 2-5 °C below ambient temperature. This work paves the way for developing mechanical flexible and strong radiative coolers for thermal regulation.

Mechanically Tunable Transmittance Convection Shield for Dynamic Radiative Cooling

Radiative cooling is the process to dissipate heat to the outer space through an atmospheric window (8-13 μm), which has great potential for energy savings in buildings. However, the traditional "static" spectral characteristics of radiative cooling materials may result in overcooling during the cold season or at night, necessitating the development of dynamic spectral radiative cooling for enhanced energy saving potential. In this study, we showcase the realization of dynamic radiative cooling by modulating the heat transfer process using a tunable transmittance convection shield (TTCS). The transmittance of the TTCS in both solar spectrum and atmospheric window can be dynamically adjusted within ranges of 28.8-72.9 and 27.0-80.5%, with modulation capabilities of ΔTsolar = 44.1% and ΔT8-13 μm = 53.5%, respectively. Field measurements demonstrate that through the modulation, the steady-state temperature of the TTCS architecture is 0.3 °C lower than that of a traditional radiative cooling architecture during the daytime and 3.3 °C higher at nighttime, indicating that the modulation strategy can effectively address the overcooling issue, offering an efficient way of energy saving through dynamic radiative cooling.

Tunable Radiative Cooling by Mechanochromic Electrospun Micro-Nanofiber Matrix

Radiative thermoregulation has been regarded as an energy-efficient method for thermal management. In this study, the development of a mechanoresponsive polydimethylsiloxane (PDMS) micro-nanofiber matrix capable of both sub-ambient radiative cooling and solar heating is presented, achieved through a core-shell electrospinning technique. The electrospun PDMS micro-nanofibers, with diameters comparable to the solar wavelengths, exhibit excellent solar reflectivity (≈93%) while preserving its pristine high infrared (IR) emissivity. As a result, the electrospun PDMS radiative cooler (EPRC) successfully demonstrated sub-ambient radiative cooling performance (≈3.8°C) during the daytime. Furthermore, the exceptional resilient property of PDMS facilitated the reversible alteration of the structural morphology created by the fiber-based matrix under mechanical force, resulting in the modulation of solar reflectivity (≈80%). The precise modulation of solar reflectivity enabled reversibly switchable multi-step radiative thermoregulation, offering enhanced flexibility in addressing varying thermal environments even in maintaining the desired temperature. The findings of this work offer a promising approach toward dynamic radiative thermoregulation, which holds significant potential for addressing global climate change concerns and energy shortage.

Thermal-Rectified Gradient Porous Polymeric Film for Solar-Thermal Regulatory Cooling

Solar-thermal regulation concerning thermal insulation and solar modulation is pivotal for cooling textiles and smart buildings. Nevertheless, a contradiction arises in balancing the demand to prevent external heat infiltration with the efficient dissipation of excess heat from enclosed spaces. Here, a concentration-gradient polymerization strategy is presented for fabricating a gradient porous polymeric film comprising interconnected polymeric microspheres. This method involves establishing an electric field-driven gradient distribution of charged crosslinkers in the precursor solution, followed by subsequent polymerization and freeze-drying processes. The resulting porous film exhibits a significant porosity gradient along its thickness, leading to exceptional unidirectional thermal insulation capabilities with a thermal rectification factor of 21%. The gradient porous film, with its thermal rectification properties, effectively reconciles the conflicting demands of diverse thermal conductivity for cooling unheated and spontaneously heated enclosed spaces. Consequently, the gradient porous film demonstrates remarkable enhancements in solar-thermal management, achieving temperature reductions of 3.0 and 4.1 °C for unheated and spontaneously heated enclosed spaces, respectively, compared to uniform porous films. The developed gradient-structured porous film thus holds promise for the development of thermal-rectified materials tailored to regulate solar-thermal conditions within enclosed environments.

Porous Structure of Polymer Films Optimized by Rationally Tuning Phase Separation for Passive All-Day Radiative Cooling

Passive all-day radiative cooling (PARC) films with porous structures prepared via nonsolvent-induced phase separation (NIPS) have attracted considerable attention owing to their cost-effectiveness and wide applicability. The PARC performances of the films correlate with their porous structures. However, the porous structure formed using the NIPS process cannot be finely regulated. In this study, we prepared polyvinylidene fluoride-hexafluoropropylene (PVDF-HFP) films with porous structures optimized by rationally tuning the phase separation, which was achieved by adjusting the proportions of two good solvents with varying solubility parameters. The optimized PVDF-HFP film with a hierarchically porous structure exhibited a high solar reflectance of 97.7% and an infrared emissivity of 96.7%. The film with excellent durability achieved an average subambient cooling temperature of approximately 5.4 °C under a solar irradiance of 945 W·m-2 as well as a temperature of 11.2 °C at nighttime, thus demonstrating all-day radiative cooling. The results indicate that the proposed films present a promising platform for large-scale applications in green building cooling and achieving carbon neutrality.

Self-sustained and Insulated Radiative/Evaporative Cooler for Daytime Subambient Passive Cooling

Passive cooling technologies are one of the promising solutions to the global energy crisis due to no consumption of fossil fuels during operation. However, the existing radiative and evaporative coolers still have problems achieving daytime subambient cooling while maintaining evaporation over the long term. Here, we propose a self-sustained and insulated radiative/evaporative cooler (SIREC), which consists of a porous polyethylene film (P-PE) at the top, an air layer in the middle, and poly(vinyl alcohol) hydrogel with lithium bromide (PLH) at the bottom. In particular, the P-PE shows high solar reflectance (R̅solar = 0.91) and long-wave infrared transmittance (τ̅LWIR = 0.92), which reflects sunlight while enhancing the direct radiative heat transfer between outer space and PLH (ε̅LWIR = 0.96) for sky radiative cooling. In addition, the desirable vapor permeability (579 s m-1) of the P-PE also results in good compatibility with PLH for evaporative cooling (EC). Moreover, the PLH's ability to harvest atmospheric water at night provides self-sustainment for daytime EC. The air layer between P-PE and PLH further enhances the subambient cooling performance of the SIREC. These findings indicate promising prospects for the integration of passive cooling technologies.

Radiative Cooling for Energy Sustainability: From Fundamentals to Fabrication Methods Toward Commercialization

Radiative cooling, a technology that lowers the temperature of terrestrial objects by dissipating heat into outer space, presents a promising ecologically-benign solution for sustainable cooling. Recent years witness substantial progress in radiative cooling technologies, bringing them closer to commercialization. This comprehensive review provides a structured overview of radiative cooling technologies, encompassing essential principles, fabrication techniques, and practical applications, with the goal of guiding researchers toward successful commercialization. The review begins by introducing the fundamentals of radiative cooling and the associated design strategies to achieve it. Then, various fabrication methods utilized for the realization of radiative cooling devices are thoroughly discussed. This discussion includes detailed assessments of scalability, fabrication costs, and performance considerations, encompassing both structural designs and fabrication techniques. Building upon these insights, potential fabrication approaches suitable for practical applications and commercialization are proposed. Further, the recent efforts made toward the practical applications of radiative cooling technology, including its visual appearance, switching capability, and compatibility are examined. By encompassing a broad range of topics, from fundamental principles to fabrication and applications, this review aims to bridge the gap between theoretical research and real-world implementation, fostering the advancement and widespread adoption of radiative cooling technology.

Functional PDMS Elastomers: Bulk Composites, Surface Engineering, and Precision Fabrication

Polydimethylsiloxane (PDMS)-the simplest and most common silicone compound-exemplifies the central characteristics of its class and has attracted tremendous research attention. The development of PDMS-based materials is a vivid reflection of the modern industry. In recent years, PDMS has stood out as the material of choice for various emerging technologies. The rapid improvement in bulk modification strategies and multifunctional surfaces has enabled a whole new generation of PDMS-based materials and devices, facilitating, and even transforming enormous applications, including flexible electronics, superwetting surfaces, soft actuators, wearable and implantable sensors, biomedicals, and autonomous robotics. This paper reviews the latest advances in the field of PDMS-based functional materials, with a focus on the added functionality and their use as programmable materials for smart devices. Recent breakthroughs regarding instant crosslinking and additive manufacturing are featured, and exciting opportunities for future research are highlighted. This review provides a quick entrance to this rapidly evolving field and will help guide the rational design of next-generation soft materials and devices.

Controllable-morphology polymer blend photonic metafoam for radiative cooling

Incorporating radiative cooling photonic structures into the cooling systems of buildings presents a novel strategy to mitigate global warming and boost global carbon neutrality. Photonic structures with excellent solar reflection and thermal emission can be obtained by a rational combination of different materials. The current preparation strategies of radiative cooling materials are dominated by doping inorganic micro-nano particles into polymers, which usually possess insufficient solar reflectance. Here, a porous polymer metafoam was prepared with polycarbonate (PC) and polydimethylsiloxane (PDMS) using a simple thermally induced phase separation method. The metafoam exhibits strong solar reflectivity (97%), superior thermal emissivity (91%), and low thermal conductivity (46 mW m-1 K-1) due to the controllable morphology of the randomly dispersed light-scattering air voids. Cooling tests demonstrate that the metafoam could reduce the average temperature by 5.2 °C and 10.2 °C during the daytime and nighttime, respectively. In addition, the simulation of a cooling energy system of buildings indicates that the metafoam can save 3.2-26.7 MJ m-2 per year in different cities, which is an energy-saving percentage of 14.7-41%. The excellent comprehensive performances, including the passive cooling property, thermal insulation and self-cleaning of the metafoam makes it appropriate for practical outdoor applications, exhibiting its great potential as an energy-saving building cooling material.

Atmospheric-moisture-induced polyacrylate hydrogels for hybrid passive cooling

Heat stress is being exacerbated by global warming, jeopardizing human and social sustainability. As a result, reliable and energy-efficient cooling methods are highly sought-after. Here, we report a polyacrylate film fabricated by self-moisture-absorbing hygroscopic hydrogel for efficient hybrid passive cooling. Using one of the lowest-cost industrial materials (e.g., sodium polyacrylate), we demonstrate radiative cooling by reducing solar heating with high solar reflectance (0.93) while maximizing thermal emission with high mid-infrared emittance (0.99). Importantly, the manufacturing process utilizes only atmospheric moisture and requires no additional chemicals or energy consumption, making it a completely green process. Under sunlight illumination of 800 W m-2, the surface temperature of the film was reduced by 5 °C under a partly cloudy sky observed at Buffalo, NY. Combined with its hygroscopic feature, this film can simultaneously introduce evaporative cooling that is independent of access to the clear sky. The hybrid passive cooling approach is projected to decrease global carbon emissions by 118.4 billion kg/year compared to current air-conditioning facilities powered by electricity. Given its low-cost raw materials and excellent molding feature, the film can be manufactured through simple and cost-effective roll-to-roll processes, making it suitable for future building construction and personal thermal management needs.

Eggshell Biowaste-Derived Flexible and Self-Cleaning Films for Efficient Subambient Daytime Radiative Cooling

The management of the abundant eggshell biowaste produced worldwide has become a problematic issue due to the generated odor and microorganisms after direct disposal of the eggshell biowaste in landfills. Herein, we propose a new method to convert the hazardous eggshell biowaste to valuable resources for energy management applications. Eggshell-based films are fabricated by embedding eggshell powders into a polymer matrix to achieve highly efficient subambient daytime radiative cooling. Benefiting from the Mie scattering of the eggshell particles/air pores in the solar spectrum and the strong emission of the eggshell in the mid-infrared (mid-IR) range, the eggshell-based films present a high reflection of 0.96 in the solar spectrum and a high emission of 0.95 in the mid-IR range, with notable average temperature reductions of 4.1 and 11 °C below the ambient temperature during daytime and nighttime, respectively. Moreover, the eggshell-based films exhibit excellent flexibility and self-cleaning properties, which are beneficial for practical long-term outdoor applications. Our proposed design provides a new means for environmentally friendly and sustainable management of eggshell biowaste.

Solution-processable, robust and sustainable cooler via nano-structured engineering

Passive daytime radiative cooling (PDRC) materials simultaneously featuring aesthetic and safety distinctions demonstrate versatile applications beyond cooling buildings, while the integrated advantages of high strength, morphological reconfigurability, and sustainability remain challenging for the conventional PDRC materials. Herein, we designed a robust, custom-shaped and eco-friendly cooler via a scalable solution-processable strategy, involving the nano-scale assembly of nano cellulose (NC) and inorganic nanoparticle (e.g., ZrO₂, SiO₂, BaSO₄, and hydroxyapatite). The robust cooler shows an interesting "brick-and-mortar" structure, where the NC constructs interwoven framework (as brick structure) and the inorganic nanoparticle uniformly locates in the skeleton (as mortar structure), collectively contributing to high mechanical strength (>80 MPa) and flexibility. In addition, the structural and chemical distinctions enable our cooler to show a high solar reflectance (>96 %) and mid-infrared emissivity (>0.9), demonstrating a sub-ambient average temperature drop of 8.8 °C in long-term outdoor environments. The high-performance cooler with robustness, scalability and environmental friendliness, serves as a competitive participant toward the advanced PDRC materials in our low-carbon society.

Antireflection and radiative cooling difunctional coating design for silicon solar cells

Passive daytime radiative cooling (PDRC) as a zero-energy consumption cooling method has broad application potential. Common commercial crystalline silicon (c-Si) solar cell arrays suffer working efficiency loss due to the incident light loss and overheating. In this work, a radiative cooler with PDMS (polydimethylsiloxane) film and embedded SiO₂ microparticles was proposed to use in silicon solar cells. Both anti-reflection and radiative cooling performance can be improved through numerical parametric study. For the best performing of PDMS/SiO₂ radiative cooler, the thickness of PDMS layer, volume fraction and radius of the embedded SiO₂ particles have been determined as 55 µm, 8% and 500 nm, respectively. 94% of emissivity in first atmospheric window band (8-13 µm) for radiative cooling and 93.4% of solar transmittance at the crystalline silicon absorption band (0.3-1.1 µm) were achieved. We estimated that the PDMS/SiO₂ radiative cooler can lower the temperature of a bare c-Si solar cell by 9.5°C, which can avoid 4.28% of efficiency loss. More incident light can enter and be utilized by silicon layer to enhance the efficiency of the solar cells. The proposed difunctional radiative cooling coating may become guidance for next generation encapsulation of crystalline silicon solar cells.

Photonic structures in radiative cooling

Radiative cooling is a passive cooling technology without any energy consumption, compared to conventional cooling technologies that require power sources and dump waste heat into the surroundings. For decades, many radiative cooling studies have been introduced but its applications are mostly restricted to nighttime use only. Recently, the emergence of photonic technologies to achieves daytime radiative cooling overcome the performance limitations. For example, broadband and selective emissions in mid-IR and high reflectance in the solar spectral range have already been demonstrated. This review article discusses the fundamentals of thermodynamic heat transfer that motivates radiative cooling. Several photonic structures such as multilayer, periodical, random; derived from nature, and associated design procedures were thoroughly discussed. Photonic integration with new functionality significantly enhances the efficiency of radiative cooling technologies such as colored, transparent, and switchable radiative cooling applications has been developed. The commercial applications such as reducing cooling loads in vehicles, increasing the power generation of solar cells, generating electricity, saving water, and personal thermal regulation are also summarized. Lastly, perspectives on radiative cooling and emerging issues with potential solution strategies are discussed.

A UV-Reflective Organic-Inorganic Tandem Structure for Efficient and Durable Daytime Radiative Cooling in Harsh Climates

Radiative cooling shows great promise in eco-friendly space cooling due to its zero-energy consumption. For subambient cooling in hot humid subtropical/tropical climates, achieving ultrahigh solar reflectance (≥96%), durable ultraviolet (UV) resistance, and surface superhydrophobicity simultaneously is critical, which, however, is challenging for most state-of-the-art scalable polymer-based coolers. Here an organic-inorganic tandem structure is reported to address this challenge, which comprises a bottom high-refractive-index polyethersulfone (PES) cooling layer with bimodal honeycomb pores, an alumina (Al₂ O₃ ) nanoparticle UV reflecting layer with superhydrophobicity, and a middle UV absorption layer of titanium dioxide (TiO₂ ) nanoparticles, thus providing thorough protection from UV and self-cleaning capability together with outstanding cooling performance. The PES-TiO₂ -Al₂ O₃ cooler demonstrates a record-high solar reflectance of over 0.97 and high mid-infrared emissivity of 0.92, which can maintain their optical properties intact even after equivalent 280-day UV exposure despite the UV-sensitivity of PES. This cooler achieves a subambient cooling temperature up to 3 °C at summer noontime and 5 °C at autumn noontime without solar shading or convection cover in a subtropical coastal city, Hong Kong. This tandem structure can be extended to other polymer-based designs, offering a UV-resist but reliable radiative cooling solution in hot humid climates.

Hierarchically Patterned Self-Cleaning Polymer Composites for Daytime Radiative Cooling

Passive daytime radiative cooling (PDRC) has the potential to reduce energy demand and mitigate global warming. However, surface contamination from dust and bacterial buildup limits practical PDRC applications. Here, we develop a hierarchically patterned nanoporous composite (HPNC) using a facile template-molding fabrication method to integrate PDRC materials with self-cleaning and antibacterial functions. The HPNC design decouples multifunctional control into different characteristic length scales that can be optimized simultaneously. The nanoporous polymer matrix embedded with tunable fillers enables 7.8 and 4.4 °C temperature reduction for outdoor personal and building cooling, respectively, under intense solar irradiance. Meanwhile, a microscale pillar array pattern integrated into the HPNC enables superhydrophobicity with self-cleaning and antisoiling functions to mitigate surface contamination. Moreover, the surface coating of photocatalytic agents can generate photoinduced antibacterial effects. The scalable fabrication and multifunctional capabilities of our HPNC design offer a promising solution for practical PDRC applications with minimal maintenance needs.

Engineering Structural Janus MXene-nanofibrils Aerogels for Season-Adaptive Radiative Thermal Regulation

Aerogels have provided a significant platform for passive radiation-enabled thermal regulation, arousing extensive interest due to their capabilities of radiative cooling or heating. However, there still remains challenge of developing functionally integrated aerogels for sustainable thermal regulation in both hot and cold environment. Here, Janus structured MXene-nanofibrils aerogel (JMNA) is rationally designed via a facile and efficient way. The achieved aerogel presents the characteristic of high porosity (≈98.2%), good mechanical strength (tensile stress of ≈2 MPa, compressive stress of ≈115 kPa), and macroscopic shaping property. Based on the asymmetric structure, the JMNA with switchable functional layers can alternatively enable passive radiative heating and cooling in winter and summer, respectively. As a proof of concept, JMNA can function as a switchable thermal-regulated roof to effectively enable the inner house model to maintain >25 °C in winter and <30 °C in hot summer. This design of Janus structured aerogels with compatible and expandable capabilities is promising to widely benefit the low-energy thermal regulation in changeable climate.

Radiative-Cooling Composites with Enhanced Infrared Emissivity by Structural Infrared Scattering through Indium Tin Oxide Nanoparticles in a Polymer Matrix

Radiative cooling has attracted tremendous interest as it can tackle global warming by saving energy consumption in heating, ventilation, and air conditioning (HVAC) in buildings. Polymer materials play an important role in radiative cooling owing to their high infrared emissivity. Along this line, numerous studies on optically optimized geometries were carried out to enhance the selective wavelength absorption for high infrared emissivity; however, the polymer material itself relatively was not investigated and optimized enough. Herein, we investigate the infrared radiation (IR) absorption coefficient of various polymer types, and introduce a new concept of radiative-cooling composites. By dispersing the IR scattering medium in a polymer matrix, IR can be effectively scattered and attenuated by the polymer matrix. Indium tin oxide was utilized as the IR scattering medium in a cellulose acetate polymer matrix in this report. The window film was made with this composite and showed an effective cooling performance by outdoor thermal evaluation. This composite opens a new venue to endow materials with enhanced radiative-cooling property regardless of the polymer types.

Biomimetic Robust All-Polymer Porous Coatings for Passive Daytime Radiative Cooling

Passive daytime radiation cooling (PDRC) has gained considerable attention as an emerging and promising cooling technology. Polymer-based porous materials are one of the important candidates for PDRC application due to their easy processing, free of inorganic particle doping, and multifunctionality. However, the mechanical properties of these porous materials, which are critical in outdoor services, have been overlooked in previous studies. Herein, a nonsolvent-induced phase separation (NIPS) method combined with ambient pressure drying to prepare polyethylene-polysilicate all-polymer porous coatings is developed. The coatings possess a Cyphochilus beetle-like skeleton structure with optimal skeleton size, laminated anisotropy, and high volume fraction (64 ± 1%). These structure features ensure a maximum skeleton density without optical crowding, thus enhancing light scattering and stress dispersion, and balancing optical and mechanical properties. The coatings exhibit significant mechanical robustness (only ≈70 µm thickness reduction after 1000 Taber abrasion cycles at a 750 g load without influencing optical performance), durability, optical properties (a solar reflectance of ≈95% and an average near-normal thermal emittance of ≈96%), and PDRC performance (realizing sub-ambient cooling of ≈3-6 °C at midday with different weather conditions). The work provides a new solution to improve the practicability of polymer-based porous coatings in PDRC outdoor services and other fields.

Green-Manufactured and Recyclable Coatings for Subambient Daytime Radiative Cooling

Passive daytime radiative cooling, which reflects sunlight and simultaneously emits heat into space to cool surfaces without energy input, is a promising strategy for energy conservation. Integrating radiative cooling with building systems can tremendously alleviate electrical cooling, but manufacturing high-efficient and eco-friendly coatings remains an urgent and challenging task. Here, we present a simple and scale-up strategy for fabricating ultrawhite coatings consisting of porous ethyl cellulose matrix-random BaSO₄ nanoparticles utilizing green solvents. With the synergistic effect of the ideal intrinsic properties of the materials and the strong Mie scattering of the porous structure, the ultrawhite coating possesses a record solar reflectance of 98.6% and a thermal emittance of 98.1%, resulting in a subambient temperature drop of over 2.5 °C under a solar intensity of ∼920 W m^-2. Better yet, our coatings can be conveniently brushed, rolled, or sprayed onto various types of substrates, with excellent durability, self-cleaning, and cost-effectiveness, paving an attractive and viable pathway for large-scale applications in practical buildings.

Tunable Thermoresponsive Flexible Films for Adaptive Temperature Management and Visual Temperature Monitoring

Effective temperature management is essential for human thermal comfort and health. Although various temperature regulation materials have been proposed previously, there are few materials that have the dual functions of temperature monitoring and thermal management. Herein, a thermoresponsive form-stable flexible film based on phase-change materials (PCMs) and polydimethylsiloxane (PDMS) is rationally designed. The resultant versatile PCM@PDMS film is able to absorb and release heat responding to temperature stimuli and good mechanical strength. Moreover, optical visibility of the PCM@PDMS film can be reversibly converted between opaque and transparent states to monitor temperature. The switching principle is that solid PCMs embedded in the PDMS would be melted into liquid PCMs to enable light through the PCM@PDMS. The thermal experiment results suggest that the PCM@PDMS films can effectively regulate the human body temperature to adapt to the demanding environment (self-heating more than 3 °C in the cold environment or self-cooling more than 4 °C in the hot environment). Such dual-function films open a pathway to develop smart personalized thermoregulation materials for human body thermal management and temperature monitoring.

Radiative Cooling and Solar Heating Janus Films for Personal Thermal Management

Hot and cold seasonal temperature fluctuations pose a serious public health threat. Radiative thermal management has been shown to be an effective method for personal thermal management. However, the currently available materials cannot maintain human thermal comfort against the hot and cold seasonal temperature fluctuations, such as heating in cold weather or cooling in hot weather. Here, a Janus film that integrates the two opposite requirements of heating and cooling into one functional dual-mode film is fabricated. In cooling mode, the Al backing and embedded silicon dioxide (SiO₂) microparticle can achieve a high solar reflectivity (∼0.85) and high IR emissivity (∼0.95) to induce a temperature drop of ∼2 °C. In contrast, the embedded carbon nanotubes (CNTs) can improve solar absorption (∼0.95) and induce a temperature increase of ∼7 °C. Owing to its radiative cooling and solar heating capability and compatibility with large-scale production, this Janus film is promising to bring new insights into the design of the next-generation functional textiles.

Slippery Passive Radiative Cooling Supramolecular Siloxane Coatings

Polymer coatings with comprehensive properties including passive radiative cooling, anti-fouling, and self-healing constitute a promising energy-saving strategy but have not been well documented yet. Herein, we reported a class of novel multifunctional supramolecular polysiloxane composite coatings showing the combination of these features. The coatings have a hybrid structure with a slippery liquid-infused porous surface and a gradient polymer-Al₂O₃ composite matrix constructed by reversible hydrogen bonding. The gradient matrix consists of a polymer-rich top and a particle-rich bottom favoring coating attachment on rigid substrates. Such a complex structure can be obtained by simply casting the suspending solutions of the polydimethylsiloxane (PDMS)-urea copolymer and Al₂O₃ on substrates followed by swelling silicone oil. Obtained coatings display good passive daytime radiative cooling (a temperature drop of ∼2 °C), self-healing ability, and anti-fouling properties. Since the comprehensive performances and the facile fabrication, the coatings should have application potential for various thermal management purposes.
