Alkene Hydrogenation Catalyzed by Nickel Hydride Complexes of an Aliphatic PNP Pincer Ligand

Properties of Metal Hydrides of the Iron Triad

Metal hydride complexes are essential intermediates in hydrogenation reactions. The hydride-donor ability determines the scope of use of these complexes. We present a new, simple mass-spectrometry method to study the hydride-donor ability of metal hydrides using a series of 18 iron, cobalt, and nickel complexes with N- and P-based ligands (L). The mixing of [(L)MII(OTf)2] with NaBH4 forms [(L)MII(BH4)]+ (M = Fe, Co, Ni) that can be detected by electrospray ionization mass spectrometry. Energy-resolved collision-induced dissociations of [(L)MII(BH4)]+ provide threshold energies (ΔECID) for the formations of [(L)MII(H)]+ that correlate well with the hydride donor ability of the metal hydride complexes. We studied the vibrational and electronic spectra of the generated metal hydrides, assigned their structure and spin state, and demonstrated a good correlation between ΔECID and the M-H stretching vibration frequencies. The ΔECID also correlates with reaction rates for hydride transfer reactivity in the gas phase and known reactivity trends in the solution phase.

A Planar Nickelaspiropentane Complex with Magnesium-Based Metalloligands: Synthesis, Structure, and Synergistic Dihydrogen Activation

The nature of transition-metal-olefin bonding has been explained by the Dewar-Chatt-Duncanson model within a continuum of two extremes, namely, a π-complex and a metallacyclopropane. The textbook rule suggests that a low-spin late-transition-metal-ethylene complex more likely forms a π-complex rather than a metallacyclopropane. Herein, we report a low-spin late-transition-metal-bis-ethylene complex forming an unprecedented planar metalla-bis-cyclopropane structure with magnesium-based metalloligands. Treatment of LMgEt (L = [(DippNCMe)₂CH]^-, Dipp = 2,6-ⁱPr₂C₆H₃) with Ni(cod)₂ (cod = 1,5-cyclooctadiene) formed the heterotrimetallic complex (LMg)₂Ni(C₂H₄)₂, which features a linear Mg-Ni-Mg linkage and a planar coordination geometry at the nickel center. Both structural features and computational studies strongly supported the Ni(C₂H₄)₂ moiety as a nickelaspiropentane. The exposure of (LMg)₂Ni(C₂H₄)₂ to 1 bar H₂ at room temperature produced a four-hydride-bridged complex (LMg)₂Ni(μ-H)₄. The profile of H₂ activation was elucidated by density functional theory calculations, which indicated a novel Mg/Ni cooperative activation mechanism with no oxidation occurring at the metal center, differing from the prevailing mono-metal-based redox mechanism. Moreover, the heterotrimetallic complex (LMg)₂Ni(C₂H₄)₂ catalyzed the hydrogenation of a wide range of unsaturated substrates under mild conditions.

Unusual mechanism of paramagnetic nickel-catalysed α-alkylation of amides

Nickel transition-metal catalysts are important materials which are widely used in (de)hydrogenation reactions. Typical NiII catalysts adopt a square planar geometry and a low-spin state owing to their d8 electronic configuration. Here, we describe a mechanistic investigation of a novel octahedral NiII catalyst with a paramagnetic nature catalysing the α-alkylation of amides. Both non-bifunctional and bifunctional pathways were considered. In addition, we clarified the superiority of the high-spin state by comparing the geometries, valence electronic configurations, and rate-limiting energy barriers of the high- and low-spin states. Our results indicate that the novel octahedral nickel catalyst favours the bifunctional pathway and tends to maintain a high-spin state throughout the reaction due to the N-arm ligand. This computational study suggests that the spin state has the potential to influence the catalyst structure and reaction mechanism. Furthermore, these findings present novel insights for the design of NiII catalysts with high-spin states.

Boosting homogeneous chemoselective hydrogenation of olefins mediated by a bis(silylenyl)terphenyl-nickel(0) pre-catalyst

The isolable chelating bis(N-heterocyclic silylenyl)-substituted terphenyl ligand [SiII(Terp)SiII] as well as its bis(phosphine) analogue [PIII(Terp)PIII] have been synthesised and fully characterised. Their reaction with Ni(cod)2 (cod = cycloocta-1,5-diene) affords the corresponding 16 VE nickel(0) complexes with an intramolecular η 2-arene coordination of Ni, [E(Terp)E]Ni(η 2-arene) (E = PIII, SiII; arene = phenylene spacer). Due to a strong cooperativity of the Si and Ni sites in H2 activation and H atom transfer, [SiII(Terp)SiII]Ni(η 2-arene) mediates very effectively and chemoselectively the homogeneously catalysed hydrogenation of olefins bearing functional groups at 1 bar H2 pressure and room temperature; in contrast, the bis(phosphine) analogous complex shows only poor activity. Catalytic and stoichiometric experiments revealed the important role of the η2-coordination of the Ni(0) site by the intramolecular phenylene with respect to the hydrogenation activity of [SiII(Terp)SiII]Ni(η 2-arene). The mechanism has been established by kinetic measurements, including kinetic isotope effect (KIE) and Hammet-plot correlation. With this system, the currently highest performance of a homogeneous nickel-based hydrogenation catalyst of olefins (TON = 9800, TOF = 6800 h-1) could be realised.

Achiral and chiral NNN-pincer nickel complexes with oxazolinyl backbones: application in transfer hydrogenation of ketones

NNN-based achiral and chiral (oxazolinyl)amido-pincer nickel complexes are developed and employed for the catalytic transfer hydrogenation of ketones.

Recent advances in pincer-nickel catalyzed reactions

Organometallic catalysts have played a key role in accomplishing numerous synthetically valuable organic transformations that are either otherwise not possible or inefficient. The use of precious, sparse and toxic 4d and 5d metals are an apparent downside of several such catalytic systems despite their immense success over the last several decades. The use of complexes containing Earth-abundant, inexpensive and less hazardous 3d metals, such as nickel, as catalysts for organic transformations has been an emerging field in recent times. In particular, the versatile nature of the corresponding pincer-metal complexes, which offers great control of their reactivity via countless variations, has garnered great interest among organometallic chemists who are looking for greener and cheaper alternatives. In this context, the current review attempts to provide a glimpse of recent developments in the chemistry of pincer-nickel catalyzed reactions. Notably, there have been examples of pincer-nickel catalyzed reactions involving two electron changes via purely organometallic mechanisms that are strikingly similar to those observed with heavier Pd and Pt analogues. On the other hand, there have been distinct differences where the pincer-nickel complexes catalyze single-electron radical reactions. The applicability of pincer-nickel complexes in catalyzing cross-coupling reactions, oxidation reactions, (de)hydrogenation reactions, dehydrogenative coupling, hydrosilylation, hydroboration, C-H activation and carbon dioxide functionalization has been reviewed here from synthesis and mechanistic points of view. The flurry of global pincer-nickel related activities offer promising avenues in catalyzing synthetically valuable organic transformations.

Heterogeneous Olefin Hydrogenation Enabled by a Highly-Reduced Nickel(-II) Catalyst Precursor

The hydrogenation of olefins, styrenes, enoates, imines, and sterically hindered tri-substituted olefins was accomplished using the pre-catalyst dilithiumbis(cycloocta-1,5-diene)nickelate(-II) (1). The mild conditions tolerate hydroxyl, halide, ester, and lactone functionalities. Mechanistic studies, including reaction progress analyses, poisoning experiments, and multinuclear NMR monitoring, indicate that a heterotopic (nickel nanoparticle) catalyst is in operation.

General and selective synthesis of primary amines using Ni-based homogeneous catalysts

The development of base metal catalysts for industrially relevant amination and hydrogenation reactions by applying abundant and atom economical reagents continues to be important for the cost-effective and sustainable synthesis of amines which represent highly essential chemicals. In particular, the synthesis of primary amines is of central importance because these compounds serve as key precursors and central intermediates to produce value-added fine and bulk chemicals as well as pharmaceuticals, agrochemicals and materials. Here we report a Ni-triphos complex as the first Ni-based homogeneous catalyst for both reductive amination of carbonyl compounds with ammonia and hydrogenation of nitroarenes to prepare all kinds of primary amines. Remarkably, this Ni-complex enabled the synthesis of functionalized and structurally diverse benzylic, heterocyclic and aliphatic linear and branched primary amines as well as aromatic primary amines starting from inexpensive and easily accessible carbonyl compounds (aldehydes and ketones) and nitroarenes using ammonia and molecular hydrogen. This Ni-catalyzed reductive amination methodology has been applied for the amination of more complex pharmaceuticals and steroid derivatives. Detailed DFT computations have been performed for the Ni-triphos based reductive amination reaction, and they revealed that the overall reaction has an inner-sphere mechanism with H₂ metathesis as the rate-determining step.

A Ni-triphos based homogeneous catalyst enabled the synthesis of all kinds of primary amines by reductive amination of carbonyl compounds with ammonia and hydrogenation of nitroarenes.

The role of acid and metal sites in hydrodeoxygenation of guaiacol over Ni/Beta catalysts

Hydrodeoxygenation (HDO) of guaiacol over Ni supported on zeolites (HBeta, HZSM-5) with different Si/Al ratios and different metal loadings (2.3–23.4 wt%) was studied in order to elucidate the role of catalyst acidity and Ni structure in the HDO.

Nickel-Catalyzed Stereodivergent Synthesis of E- and Z-Alkenes by Hydrogenation of Alkynes

A convenient protocol for stereodivergent hydrogenation of alkynes to E- and Z-alkenes by using nickel catalysts was developed. Simple Ni(NO3 )2 ⋅6 H2 O as a catalyst precursor formed active nanoparticles, which were effective for the semihydrogenation of several alkynes with high selectivity for the Z-alkene (Z/E>99:1). Upon addition of specific multidentate ligands (triphos, tetraphos), the resulting molecular catalysts were highly selective for the E-alkene products (E/Z>99:1). Mechanistic studies revealed that the Z-alkene-selective catalyst was heterogeneous whereas the E-alkene-selective catalyst was homogeneous. In the latter case, the alkyne was first hydrogenated to a Z-alkene, which was subsequently isomerized to the E-alkene. This proposal was supported by density functional theory calculations. This synthetic methodology was shown to be generally applicable in >40 examples and scalable to multigram-scale experiments.

Bimetallic nickel-lutetium complexes: tuning the properties and catalytic hydrogenation activity of the Ni site by varying the Lu coordination environment

We present three heterobimetallic complexes containing an isostructural nickel center and a lutetium ion in varying coordination environments. The bidentate ⁱPr₂PCH₂NHPh and nonadentate (ⁱPr₂PCH₂NHAr)₃tacn ligands were used to prepare the Lu metalloligands, Lu(ⁱPr₂PCH₂NPh)₃ (1) and Lu{(ⁱPr₂PCH₂NAr)₃tacn} (2), respectively. Reaction of Ni(COD)₂ (where COD is 1,5-cyclooctadiene) and 1 afforded NiLu(ⁱPr₂PCH₂NPh)₃ (3), with a Lu coordination number (CN) of 4 and a Ni-Lu distance, d(Ni-Lu), of 2.4644(2) Å. Complex 3 can further bind THF to form 3-THF, increasing both the Lu CN to 5 and d(Ni-Lu) to 2.5989(4) Å. On the other hand, incorporation of Ni(0) into 2 provides NiLu{(ⁱPr₂PCH₂NAr)₃tacn} (4), in which the Lu coordination environment is more saturated (CN = 6), and the d(Ni-Lu) is substantially elongated at 2.9771(5) Å. Cyclic voltammetry of the three Ni-Lu complexes shows an overall ∼410 mV shift in the Ni(0/I) redox couple, suggesting tunability of the Ni electronics across the series. Computational studies reveal polarized bonding interactions between the Ni 3d _{z ²} (major) and the Lu 5d _{z ²} (minor) orbitals, where the percentage of Lu character increases in the order: 4 (6.0% Lu 5d _{z ²} ) < 3-THF (8.5%) < 3 (9.3%). All three Ni-Lu complexes bind H₂ at low temperatures (-30 to -80 °C) and are competent catalysts for styrene hydrogenation. Complex 3 outperforms 4 with a four-fold faster rate. Additionally, adding increasing THF equivalents to 3, which would favor build-up of 3-THF, decreases the rate. We propose that altering the coordination sphere of the Lu support can influence the resulting properties and catalytic activity of the active Ni(0) metal center.

First-Row Transition Metal (De)Hydrogenation Catalysis Based On Functional Pincer Ligands

The use of 3d metals in de/hydrogenation catalysis has emerged as a competitive field with respect to "traditional" precious metal catalyzed transformations. The introduction of functional pincer ligands that can store protons and/or electrons as expressed by metal-ligand cooperativity and ligand redox-activity strongly stimulated this development as a conceptual starting point for rational catalyst design. This review aims at providing a comprehensive picture of the utilization of functional pincer ligands in first-row transition metal hydrogenation and dehydrogenation catalysis and related synthetic concepts relying on these such as the hydrogen borrowing methodology. Particular emphasis is put on the implementation and relevance of cooperating and redox-active pincer ligands within the mechanistic scenarios.

Roles of Hydrogen Bonding in Proton Transfer to κP,κN,κP-N(CH2CH2P i Pr2)2-Ligated Nickel Pincer Complexes

The nickel PNP pincer complex ( ^{i Pr}PNP)NiPh ( ^{i Pr}PNP = κ^P,κ^N,κ^P-N(CH₂CH₂P ⁱ Pr₂)₂) was prepared by reacting ( ^{i Pr}PNP)NiBr with PhMgCl or deprotonating [( ^{i Pr}PN^HP)NiPh]Y ( ^{i Pr}PN^HP = κ^P,κ^N,κ^P-HN(CH₂CH₂P ⁱ Pr₂)₂; Y = Br, PF₆) with KO ^t Bu. The byproducts of the PhMgCl reaction were identified as [( ^{i Pr}PN^HP)NiPh]Br and ( ^{i Pr}PNP')NiPh ( ^{i Pr}PNP' = κ^P,κ^N,κ^P-N(CH=CHP ⁱ Pr₂)(CH₂CH₂P ⁱ Pr₂)). The methyl analog ( ^{i Pr}PNP)NiMe was synthesized from the reaction of ( ^{i Pr}PNP)NiBr with MeLi, although it was contaminated with ( ^{i Pr}PNP')NiMe due to ligand oxidation. Protonation of ( ^{i Pr}PNP)NiX (X = Br, Ph, Me) with various acids, such as HCl, water, and MeOH, was studied in C₆D₆. Nitrogen protonation was shown to be the most favorable process, producing a cationic species [( ^{i Pr}PN^HP)NiX]⁺ with the NH moiety hydrogen-bonded to the conjugate base (i.e., Cl^-, HO^-, or MeO^-). Protonation of the Ni-C bond was observed at room temperature with ( ^{i Pr}PNP)NiMe, whereas at 70 °C with ( ^{i Pr}PNP)NiPh, both resulting in [( ^{i Pr}PN^HP)NiCl]Cl as the final product. Protonation of ( ^{i Pr}PNP)NiBr was complicated by site exchange between Br^- and the conjugate base and by the degradation of the pincer complexes. Indene, which lacks hydrogen-bonding capability, was unable to protonate ( ^{i Pr}PNP)NiPh and ( ^{i Pr}PNP)NiMe, despite being more acidic than water and MeOH. Neutral and cationic nickel pincer complexes involved in this study, including ( ^{i Pr}PNP')NiBr, ( ^{i Pr}PNP)NiPh, ( ^{i Pr}PNP')NiPh, ( ^{i Pr}PNP)NiMe, [( ^{i Pr}PN^HP)NiPh]Y (Y = Br, PF₆, BPh₄), [( ^{i Pr}PN^HP)NiPh]₂[NiCl₄], [( ^{i Pr}PN^HP)NiMe]Y (Y = Cl, Br, BPh₄), [( ^{i Pr}PN^HP)NiBr]Br, and [( ^{i Pr}PN^HP)NiCl]Cl, were characterized by X-ray crystallography.

Hydride & dihydrogen complexes of earth abundant metals: structure, reactivity, and applications to catalysis

Recent developments in the chemistry of hydride and dihydrogen complexes of iron, cobalt, and nickel are summarized. Applications in homogeneous catalysis are emphasized.

Oxidant-free synthesis of benzimidazoles from alcohols and aromatic diamines catalysed by new Ru(ii)-PNS(O) pincer complexes

A greener method for synthesizing 2-substituted benzimidazole through the acceptorless dehydrogenative condensation of alcohols and ortho-arylenediamine is developed.

Unravelling the Mechanism of Basic Aqueous Methanol Dehydrogenation Catalyzed by Ru-PNP Pincer Complexes

Ruthenium PNP complex 1a (RuH(CO)Cl(HN(C₂H₄Pi-Pr₂)₂)) represents a state-of-the-art catalyst for low-temperature (<100 °C) aqueous methanol dehydrogenation to H₂ and CO₂. Herein, we describe an investigation that combines experiment, spectroscopy, and theory to provide a mechanistic rationale for this process. During catalysis, the presence of two anionic resting states was revealed, Ru-dihydride (3^-) and Ru-monohydride (4^-) that are deprotonated at nitrogen in the pincer ligand backbone. DFT calculations showed that O- and CH- coordination modes of methoxide to ruthenium compete, and form complexes 4^- and 3^-, respectively. Not only does the reaction rate increase with increasing KOH, but the ratio of 3^-/4^- increases, demonstrating that the "inner-sphere" C-H cleavage, via C-H coordination of methoxide to Ru, is promoted by base. Protonation of 3^- liberates H₂ gas and formaldehyde, the latter of which is rapidly consumed by KOH to give the corresponding gem-diolate and provides the overall driving force for the reaction. Full MeOH reforming is achieved through the corresponding steps that start from the gem-diolate and formate. Theoretical studies into the mechanism of the catalyst Me-1a (N-methylated 1a) revealed that C-H coordination to Ru sets-up C-H cleavage and hydride delivery; a process that is also promoted by base, as observed experimentally. However, in this case, Ru-dihydride Me-3 is much more stable to protonation and can even be observed under neutral conditions. The greater stability of Me-3 rationalizes the lower rates of Me-1a compared to 1a, and also explains why the reaction rate then drops with increasing KOH concentration.
