Abstract
Bovine trypanosomosis, caused by Trypanosoma vivax, is a disease that originated in Africa and currently affects cattle in several South American countries, including almost all Brazilian states. Despite the reports on T. vivax infection in southern Brazil, data on its circulation status is currently unavailable. In this study, we aimed to detect anti-Trypanosoma spp. IgG antibodies in cattle from Rio Grande do Sul and suggest areas with T. vivax transmission risk. A total of 691 serum samples from cattle in the intermediate regions of Rio Grande do Sul were analyzed using indirect immunofluorescence assay (IFA). The overall seroprevalence of anti-Trypanosoma antibodies in cattle was 24.6% (170/691). The detection rate ranged from 0-37.3%, with a high prevalence in the intermediate regions of Ijuí (37.3%), Uruguaiana (30.7%), and Passo Fundo (28.9%). Thus, these regions were suggested as possible bovine trypanosomosis risk areas due to the high seroprevalence. This is the first serological study to determine Trypanosoma spp. infection status in cattle from Rio Grande do Sul, providing data on the epidemiology of trypanosomosis in the state.

Abstract
In South America, Colombia is the third-largest livestock producer with approximately 28.8 million cattle, of which Colombian Creole cattle represent around 1% of the livestock population. Animal Trypanosomiasis (AT) is one of the most critical problems in the livestock industry, reducing its production by about 30 %. Considering the paucity of information to understand the epidemiological features of AT in Colombian Creole cattle, the present study reports the molecular prevalence and clinical traits associated with the infection of Trypanosoma spp. in three Colombian Creole breeds. From 2019 to 2020, cross-sectional surveillance in farms of central and west of Colombia was designed to evaluate the mentioned characteristics in Casanareño, Chino Santandereano, and Sanmartinero Creole breeds. Molecular analysis showed an AT prevalence of 60.2 % (95 % CI = 54.2 % - 66.2 %). The Chino Santandereano population presented the highest value (Trypanosoma spp., 75.2 %, T. theileri 59.6 % and T. evansi 15.6 %), followed by Casanareño (Trypanosoma spp., 65.3 %, T. theileri 38.6 %, T. evansi 24.0 %, and T. vivax 5.3 %) and Sanmartinero (Trypanosoma spp., 33.3 %, T. theileri 24.0 % and T. evansi 9.3 %). Features such as breeds, age, and feeding system were significantly associated with AT prevalence (P < 0.05). Additionally, a low level of serum total proteins was observed during T. evansi infection in Sanmartinero (P < 0.05). To our knowledge, this is the first cross-sectional survey that evaluates using molecular methods the infection of Trypanosoma spp. in Colombian Creole breeds, showing significant variations in the prevalence and clinical signs associated with the infection. These results suggest different degrees of trypanotolerance in these breeds, as well as a possible effect of environmental variables on the prevalence and clinical characteristics associated with the infection. The epidemiological and economic implications of these findings are discussed here.

Abstract
Argentina is a home to millions of beef and dairy cattle and is one of the world's major exporters of meat. In the present study, Trypanosoma vivax was prevalent (2016-2018) in two major livestock farming regions, the Gran Chaco and the Pampas. In the Gran Chaco, 29% and 51% of animals (n = 72, taurine x zebuine crossbreed) were, respectively, positive by TviCATL-PCR and the more sensitive fluorescent fragment length barcoding (FFLB) method. While 18.4/38.8% of breeding cows (n = 49) tested positive by PCR/FFLB, infection increased to 52.2/78.3% in an outbreak of acute infection in steers (n = 23, taurine breed) brought from a non-endemic area. In the Pampas, overall infection rates in dairy cows (n = 54, taurine breed) were comparable (p > .01) between PCR (66.7%) and FFLB (62.9%) and showed a remarkable increase (PCR / FFLB) from 48.3/44.8% in 2017 to 88/84% in 2018. Infected dairy cattle exhibited anaemia, fever, anorexia, enlarged lymph nodes, emaciation and neurological signs. In contrast, beef cows (taurine x zebuine crossbreed) from the Pampas (n = 30) were asymptomatic despite exhibiting 16.7% (PCR) and 53.3% (FFLB) infection rates. Microsatellite genotyping revealed a remarkable microheterogeneity, seven genotypes in the Gran Chaco, nine in the Pampas and five shared between both regions, consistent with regular movement of T. vivax infected livestock. Data gathered in our study support the Gran Chaco being an endemic area for T. vivax, whereas the Pampas emerged as an outbreak area of acute infection in dairy cattle with critical negative impact in milk production. To the best of our knowledge, this is the first molecular study of T. vivax in Argentina, and results indicated the need for preventive measures to control T. vivax spread from the Gran Chaco to vast livestock farming areas across Argentina.

Abstract
Trypanosoma vivax Ziemann is a parasite that affects both wild and domestic ungulates and is transmitted mechanically via tabanids and other blood-sucking insects in the Americas. A total of 621 blood samples from water buffaloes (Bubalus bubalis (Linnaeus) (Artiodactyla: Bovidae), and 184 ectoparasite samples (Amblyomma cajennense (Fabricius) sensu stricto and Rhipicephalus (Boophilus) microplus (Canestrini) (Acari: Ixodidae), and Haematopinus tuberculatus (Burmeister) (Phthiraptera: Haematopinidae)) were obtained from 60 farms in the State of Pará, Brazilian Amazon. Twelve buffalo blood samples (1.89%) and 11 ectoparasites (6%) were positive for T. vivax based on the cathepsin L-like gene. All sequences were 99% similar to T. vivax from northeastern Brazil (EU753788) in amplified PCR assays on each of the hosts tested.

Abstract
Surra is a zoonotic disease caused by Trypanosoma evansi, affecting the health and production of the livestock significantly. There are several methods to diagnose this disease, which have different principles, sensitivity, and specificity. Among them, the serological techniques using T. evansi as antigen are powerful tools for its epidemiological surveillance. However, they are poorly used due to inefficient in vitro propagation of T. evansi, which requires the use of laboratory animals for antigen production. In the present study, whole cell lysate of T. brucei brucei propagated in vitro was used as an antigen for the detection of anti-T. evansi immunoglobulin G in cattle through an indirect-ELISA. Based on a total of 45 samples from non-infected and 45 samples from T. evansi infected cattle, the sensitivity and specificity were estimated as 100% and 97.7%, respectively. After the validation, serological and molecular surveys were carried out in 710 cattle samples from two endemic Colombian regions (Antioquia and Arauca departments) for T. evansi where molecular prevalences of ˜7.0% were detected through the year and sporadic outbreaks of T. vivax infections have been associated to low prevalence of this species (<1%). A total of 424 (59.7%) samples were positive by indirect-ELISA T. b. brucei, while PCR test for T. evansi and T. vivax, showed 49 (6.9%) and no positive samples, respectively. Interestingly, categories of animals aged>1 year, Bos taurus breed, and those raised under intensive farming system exhibited a higher seroprevalence to T. evansi (P < 0.05). The results displayed a new alternative for antibody detection anti-T. evansi in livestock, using parasites propagated in vitro as antigen, which presents the advantage of higher standardization potential, and avoid the use of live animal for antigen production. A larger availability of this ELISA will generate useful information for a better understanding of the epidemiologic aspects, as well as for the management and control of these diseases in Colombia. However, the ability of the test to detect and/or cross react with T. vivax infections remains to be investigated.

Abstract
Animal Trypanosomiasis (AT) is one of the most important problems in the Colombian livestock industry reducing its production around 30%. Caribbean and Orinoquia regions play a significant role in the development of this industry, having about 6.9 million cattle and 113,000 buffaloes. Considering the paucity in studies to understand the epidemiological features and control of AT in Colombia, the present study reports the seasonal transmission patterns and phylogeographic traits of the causal agents of AT in cattle and buffaloes from these regions. Between 2014 and 2016, a three-point longitudinal survey was designed to evaluate the mentioned characteristics. Molecular analysis in cattle showed an AT prevalence of 39.2% (T. theileri 38.6%, T. evansi 6.7% and T. vivax 0.2%), with higher values during wet and late wet seasons, while in buffaloes the prevalence was 28.2% (T. theileri 28.2% and T. evansi 1.3%), with higher values during the dry season. Additionally, variables such as tabanid abundance, vector control, breeding system, age and anemia signs were significantly associated with AT prevalence (P<0.05). Only T. theileri infection was higher in cattle with anemia signs than those with normal packed cell volume. Finally, phylogeographic analysis revealed that Colombian T. theileri isolates were associated to specific host genotypes IA and IIB, described worldwide; T. vivax isolates were related to the genotype from West Africa; while T. evansi isolates are related to the South American genotypes and to new genotypes. This is the first longitudinal survey that evaluates through molecular methods, the infection of Trypanosoma spp. in two important livestock regions from Colombia, showing that the clinical effects and prevalence of these trypanosomes in cattle and buffaloes are modulated by seasonal variations, host factors, and parasite traits. The results suggest that these factors have to be taken into account to successfully control AT in these regions.

Abstract
This is the first description of a Trypanosoma vivax outbreak in the state of São Paulo (municipality of Lins). Fever, jaundice, decreased milk production, weight loss, profuse diarrhea, abortion, anemia, leukocytosis and hyperfibrinogenemia were observed in the affected animals. Thirty-one cows and calves died out of a total of 1080 in the herd. Three cows showed neurological symptoms like dysmetria, ataxia, muscle weakness, ptyalism, lymph node enlargement and submandibular edema. Flagellated hemoparasites were observed in blood smears. The species was diagnosed as T. vivax by means of PCR. This T.vivax strain showed resistance to diaminazene aceturate and the infection spread quickly at the herd. From the ELISA test, 599 serum samples (98.36%) were positive for anti-T.vivax IgG antibodies. This outbreak occurred during a very dry period, which indicates that other factors were involved in the outbreak, such as absence of tabanids and large populations of Haematobia irritans and Stomoxys calcitrans. The increases in these populations may have been due to the use of biosolid waste from sugar and ethanol plants in the sugarcane plantations surrounding the dairy farm.

Abstract
The present study was aimed at investigating the effect of experimental infection by Trypanosoma vivax in different stages of pregnancy, determining the pathogenesis of reproductive failure, and confirming transplacental transmission. We used 12 pregnant ewes distributed into four experimental groups: G1, was formed by three ewes infected with T. vivax in the first third of pregnancy (30 days); G2 comprised three infected ewes in the final third of pregnancy (100 days); G3 and G4 were composed of three non-infected ewes with the same gestational period, respectively. Each ewe of G1 and G2 was inoculated with 1.25 × 105 tripomastigotes. Clinical examination, determination of parasitemia, serum biochemistry (albumin, total protein, glucose, cholesterol, and urea), packed cell volume (PCV), serum progesterone, and pathological examination were performed. Placenta, amniotic fluid, blood and tissues from the fetuses and stillbirths were submitted to PCR. Two ewes of G1 (Ewe 1 and 3) presented severe infection and died in the 34th and 35th days post-infection (dpi), respectively; but both fetuses were recovered during necropsy. In G2, Ewe 5 aborted two fetuses on the 130th day (30 dpi) of pregnancy; and Ewe 6 aborted one fetus in the 140th day (40 dpi) of gestation. Ewes 2 and 4 delivered two weak lambs that died five days after birth. Factors possibly involved with the reproductive failure included high parasitemia, fever, low PCV, body score, serum glucose, total protein, cholesterol, and progesterone. Hepatitis, pericarditis, and encephalitis were observed in the aborted fetuses. The presence of T. vivax DNA in the placenta, amniotic fluid, blood, and tissues from the fetuses confirms the transplacental transmission of the parasite. Histological lesion in the fetuses and placenta also suggest the involvement of the parasite in the etiopathogenesis of reproductive failure in ewes.

Abstract
In South American countries, bovine trypanosomiasis is caused mainly by Trypanosoma vivax. Among the infected animals, bovines are considered more susceptible, and this susceptibility varies among breeds. To determine the occurrence of T. vivax in Maranhão State, Brazil, a total of 559 cattle blood samples were collected for molecular and parasitological studies. On São Luís Island, no parasites were observed in the parasitological exam; however, with the polymerase chain reaction (PCR) method, three samples (1.06%) were positive. In four municipalities that compose the Pedreiras Basin, 3.39% of the animals were positive on the parasitological exam, and 6.21% of animals were positive by PCR. This finding demonstrates that PCR is more sensitive and confirms that the method is very useful in epidemiological surveys. A further interesting point is that molecular studies clearly define the differences in surface glycoproteins and antigenic variants.

Abstract
A study was undertaken to investigate the role of Trypanosoma vivax in sheep and goat mortality and abortions in the Brazilian semiarid region, where outbreaks had been previously reported in bovines. For this purpose, 177 goats and 248 sheep (20% of herds) were randomly sampled on four farms in the State of Paraiba in May and October 2008. The animals were screened for trypanosomes by the buffy coat technique (BCT) and PCR. Infected animals, approximately 25% in both surveys, manifested apathy, pale mucous membranes, enlarged lymph nodes, weakness, weight loss, opacity of the cornea, blindness and abortion. However, the animals with acute and severe disease showing the highest levels of parasitemia and fever, which many times resulted in death, were only detected in the first survey. These severely diseased animals exhibited progressive weight loss and had the smallest packed cell volume (PCV) values. During survey 2, done in October 2008 on the same farms, only animals with low parasitemia and normal temperatures, PCV values and body weights were detected. Therefore, animals that spontaneously recovered from acute infection developed chronic and asymptomatic disease. This finding demonstrated for the first time that sheep and goats, which are the most important livestock in the semiarid region of Brazil, may be severely injured by T. vivax infection and also play a role as asymptomatic carriers and important sources of T. vivax to ruminants in general.

Abstract
The biology, epidemiology, pathogenesis, diagnostic techniques, and history of the introduction of Trypanosoma (Duttonella) vivax in the New World are reviewed. The two main immunological responses of trypanosome-infected animals - antibody production and immunodepression - are discussed in the context of how these responses play a role in disease tolerance or susceptibility. Isolation and purification of T. vivax are briefly discussed. The recent reports of bovine trypanosomiasis diagnosed in cattle on farms located in the Pantanal region of the states of Mato Grosso do Sul and Mato Grosso, Brazil, are also discussed.

Abstract
Descrevem-se dois surtos de tripanossomíase por Trypanosoma vivax em bovinos, ocorridos em dois estabelecimentos do alto sertão da Paraíba. Os sinais clínicos, a patologia e a epidemiologia da doença foram estudados no período de maio de 2005 a novembro de 2006.T. vivax foi identificado em esfregaços da capa leucocitária e mediante a reação em cadeia da polimerase (PCR). Os animais afetados apresentaram anorexia, depressão, febre, anemia, perda de peso, redução da produção leiteira, cegueira transitória, aborto e sinais nervosos caracterizados por incoordenação motora, salivação, opistótono, nistagno, tetania e bruxismo. Todos os animais que apresentaram sintomatologia nervosa morreram. As alterações macroscópicas observadas em um bovino submetido à necropsia foram aumento de volume dos linfonodos, atrofia serosa dos depósitos de gordura, aumento de volume do baço com evidência da polpa branca, hidropericárdio, além de petéquias e equimoses no epicárdio. Histologicamente havia meningoencefalite. O controle da doença na propriedade com tratamento específico dos casos clínicos com aceturato de diminazene foi eficiente, pois após o tratamento não se verificou mais a presença do parasita em esfregaços sanguíneos nem evidência clínica da enfermidade em até 2 meses após o início do surto. Os fatores epidemiológicos favoráveis à ocorrência dos surtos foram a abundância de vetores mecânicos, como tabanídeos e Stomozys spp., e a entrada, no rebanho, de animais oriundos de propriedades onde ocorreu a doença em questão. Sugere-se que o semi-árido do Nordeste, devido a períodos prolongados de secas e altas temperaturas, é região de instabilidade enzoótica para a tripanossomíase, em conseqüência, provavelmente, ao ambiente desfavorável para o desenvolvimento de vetores durante a maior parte do ano.

Abstract
There are data indicating that the distribution of Trypanosoma vivax in the Brazilian territory is expanding with potential to reach other areas, where the vectors are present. The detection of anti-trypanosomal antibodies in serum provides important information of the trypanosomal status in cattle herds. For this reason, an enzyme-linked immunosorbent assay (Tv-ELISA-Ab) with crude antigen from one Brazilian isolate of T. vivax was developed and evaluated. The sensitivity and specificity were respectively 97.6 and 96.9%. In the evaluation of cross-reactions, three calves inoculated with T. evansi trypimastigotes blood forms showed optical densities (OD) under the cut-off during the whole experimental period, except one at 45 days post-inoculation. With relation to Babesia bovis, B. bigemina, and Anaplasma marginale, which are endemic hemoparasites in the studied area, the cross-reactions were shown to be 5.7, 5.3, and 1.1%, respectively. The first serological survey of Pantanal and state of Pará showed that T. vivax is widespread, although regions within both areas had significantly different prevalences. Therefore, this Tv-ELISA-Ab may be a more appropriate test for epidemiological studies in developing countries because the diagnostic laboratories in most countries may be able to perform an ELISA, which is not true for polymerase chain reaction.

Abstract
An outbreak of trypanosomiasis by Trypanosoma vivax is reported in the semiarid of Paraíba, Northeastern Brazil from May to August 2002. Sixty-four cows out of 130 were affected; 11 died and the other recovered after treatment with diminazene aceturate. Affected animals had fever, anemia, weight loss, hypoglycemia, increased serum levels of aspartate aminotransferase and, in nine cows, nervous signs. All cows with nervous signs died; six of them recovered after treatment, but the disease relapsed. Six cows aborted and one delivered a calf that died immediately after parturition. Thirty-two out of 100 calves were affected and five died. Nervous signs were not observed in the calves. Gross lesions were thickening of the meninges, enlarged lymph nodes and prominent white pulp of the spleen. The main histological lesion was meningoencephalitis and malacia in the brain of cows with nervous signs. No antibodies against trypanosomes were found in 33 blood samples collected before the outbreak in the affected farm and in 29 samples collected at the same time in two other neighbor farms. Until January 2003, all 89 animals tested had antibodies against T. vivax, suggesting the occurrence of sub clinical infections in cattle without clinical signs. Only two out of 85 serum samples collected on April 2004 were positive for T. vivax antibodies. Data obtained suggested that the semiarid region is non-endemic for trypanosomiasis and that disease occurred due to introduction of the parasite in a susceptible population after an apparent rise in the Tabanus spp. population.

Abstract
O presente estudo teve por objetivo avaliar as alterações clínicas, hematológicas e patológicas em ovinos infectados experimentalmente com Trypanosoma vivax, utilizando-se um isolado proveniente de bovinos infectados naturalmente no município de Catolé do Rocha, Paraíba. Quatro ovinos da raça Santa Inês foram infectados por via intravenosa com 1ml de sangue contendo 1,85x10(5) tripomastigotas de T. vivax e outros quatro ovinos foram destinados ao grupo controle. A parasitemia e a temperatura foram determinadas diariamente durante 30 dias após a infecção (dpi) e quinzenalmente dos 31 aos 90 dias. A cada 15 dias os animais foram pesados e realizados coletas de sangue para hemograma. Um ovino morreu aos 75 dpi, os demais animais do grupo infectado e do grupo controle foram sacrificados 90 dias após o início do experimento. T. vivax foi evidenciado a partir do 4º dpi em todos os ovinos infectados. A parasitemia foi constante até os 15 dias e irregular entre os 16 e 30 dias. Após o 30º dia não foram observados parasitas no sangue. Foi observada correlação linear positiva entre temperatura retal e parasitemia [Y=0,027x + 38,515; R²=0,9444 (P<0,05)]. Diferença significativa do peso entre os grupos infectado e controle foi verificada a partir do 30º ao 90º dpi. Do 30º ao 90º os animais apresentaram anemia e leucopenia. As lesões macroscópicas encontradas na necropsia foram palidez da carcaça, aumento generalizado dos linfonodos e do baço, e discreta quantidade de líquido nas cavidades peritoneal e pericárdica. Histologicamente, em todos os animais infectados foi observada miocardite multifocal mononuclear. Concluiu-se que o isolado é patogênico para ovinos. Sugere-se que a região semi-árida onde ocorreu o surto, não é endêmica para a tripanossomíase e a doença pode ocorrer se o parasita for introduzido na presença de vetores.

Abstract
Trypanosoma vivax and Trypanosoma evansi are livestock parasites of economic importance in Africa, Asia and South America. In the Pantanal, Brazil, they cause economic losses in both cattle and equines. Little is known of their maintenance and spread in nature, particularly in terms of reservoirs and means of mechanical transmission. Here we report for the first time the use of PCR for the detection of T. vivax and T. evansi in bovines, buffaloes and sheep. Whereas parasitological diagnosis detected only two T. vivax infections, one in buffalo and another in a cow, PCR detected infections in 34.8% buffaloes, 44.7% bovines and 37.3% sheep. Trypanozoon primers detected 41.8% infections in buffaloes and 8.1% in cattle. PCR revealed 6.9% mixed infections in buffaloes and 5.3% in cattle. The potential role of cattle and buffaloes as hosts and reservoirs of T. vivax is discussed, as well as the implications of possible extravascular foci in the maintenance of livestock trypanosomosis.

Abstract
The role of mechanical vectors in the transmission of African livestock trypanosomes has always been controversial relative to tsetse flies, their cyclical vectors. An experiment was carried out in Burkina Faso to demonstrate mechanical transmission of Trypanosoma vivax by one of the most common tabanids in Africa: Atylotus agrestis. Eight heifers (crossbred zebuxBaoulé), free of trypanosome infection, were kept in a corral covered by a mosquito net, together with two heifers infected experimentally with a local stock of T. vivax. On average, 324 A. agrestis, freshly captured with Nzi traps, were introduced daily over 20 days. Parasitological, PCR and serological examinations were carried out regularly to assess infections and levels of parasitaemia. Microscopic examination of buffy-coats indicated that five of the eight receiver-heifers were infected on days 8, 13, 32, 41, and 48. PCR results indicated that these five heifers were already infected by day 13. Mechanical transmission of T. vivax by A. agrestis was demonstrated unequivocally, at a high rate (63% in 13-20 days). Conditions of transmission in this experiment are discussed in terms of natural rates of challenge. The importance of tabanids as mechanical vectors of T. vivax should be re-considered, in light of these results. Creation of tsetse free zones in Africa will generally lead to the disappearance of T. congolense, T. brucei, and most often T. vivax as well; however, in areas where T. vivax can be mechanically transmitted, clearance of tsetse may not be sufficient to eradicate livestock trypanosomosis.

Abstract
Avaliaram-se as alterações clínico-laboratoriais de seis bezerros Nelore, de ambos os sexos, inoculados experimentalmente com 10(7) organismos viáveis de Trypanosoma vivax, isolados de bovinos da região de Poconé, Estado de Mato Grosso. Os animais foram observados diariamente, durante 30 dias, quanto aos parâmetros de temperatura retal, volume globular (VG), parasitemia, produção de anticorpos, coloração de mucosas, comportamento e apetite. Determinaram-se os níveis séricos de aspartato aminotransferase (AST), fosfatase alcalina (FA), gama glutamiltransferase (GGT), creatina kinase (CK), colesterol, uréia, creatinina, cálcio, fósforo e o perfil eletroforético das proteínas séricas aos 4, 8, 12, 16, 23 e 30 dias pós-inoculação (DPI). Durante os 6 meses seguintes, os animais foram observados semanalmente, avaliando-se a temperatura retal, o VG e a parasitemia. T. vivax foi evidenciado a partir do terceiro e quarto DPI em todos os bezerros e persistiu até o 30° DPI em cinco dos seis animais em estudo. Ocorreu um decréscimo significativo (p<0,05) do valor médio do VG (25%) aos dez DPI. Os animais não apresentaram qualquer alteração no quadro clínico, bem como na avaliação da bioquímica sérica durante o período experimental. A soroconversão ocorreu aos 6 e 8 DPI, permanecendo todos os animais soropositivos nos 30 dias experimentais. Bovinos nelores jovens, infectados experimentalmente com T. vivax, foram capazes de estabelecer um equilíbrio na relação hospedeiro-parasita.

Abstract
Animal trypanosome species of economical importance in South America include T. vivax and T. evansi. Both species are described in Brazil, Bolivia, Colombia, French Guyana, Peru, Suriname, and Venezuela. In Argentina and Guyana, only T. evansi and T. vivax are found, respectively. Our studies on T. vivax indicated that the parasite was spreading around 1.3 km per day in Bolivia. We found severe leukopenia in bovines from Pantanal (Brazil) and the Department of Santa Cruz (Bolivia). Because it can cause immunosuppression, the importance of trypanosomiasis control in ensuring success of vaccination campaigns against foot and mouth disease (FMD) in the Pantanal and Bolivia should be considered. The use of one needle for several animals during FMD campaigns in Brazil and Bolivia could also contribute to the spread of T. vivax. The anticipated losses due to T. vivax could exceed $160 million, assuming there are 11 million head of cattle in the Brazilian Pantanal and Bolivian lowlands. International collaboration among research institutes is needed to deal with these diseases and parasites. Previous efforts using information technologies resulted in the creation of two discussion lists (Tryplink and Trypan), the edition of the on-line version of Trypnews and Internet conferences.

Abstract
This paper reports the first occurrence of bovine trypanosomosis due to Trypanosoma vivax in Bolivia. T. vivax was identified in thin blood smears of 159 cattle from the Provinces of Velaco (57), Nuflo de Chavez (20), Guayaros (30) and Chiquitos (52), and in 86.20% of 29 cattle from Laguna Concepción examined by microhematocrit test. The clinical signs observed were fever, anemia, abortion, progressive weakness, loss of appetite, lethargy, substantial weight loss in a relatively short time, and progressive emaciation.
