Abstract
In 2021, the World Health Organization released the fifth edition of the central nervous system (CNS) tumor classification. This classification uses histopathology and molecular pathogenesis to group tumors into more biologically and molecularly defined entities. The prognosis of brain cancer, particularly malignant tumors, has remained poor worldwide, approximately 308,102 new cases of brain and other CNS tumors were diagnosed in the year 2020, with an estimated 251,329 deaths. The cost and time-consuming nature of studies to find new anticancer agents makes it necessary to have well-designed studies. In the present study, the pathways that can be targeted for drug development are discussed in detail. Some of the important cellular origins, signaling, and pathways involved in the efficacy of bioactive molecules against CNS tumorigenesis or progression, as well as prognosis and common approaches for treatment of different types of brain tumors, are reviewed. Moreover, different study tools, including cell lines, in vitro, in vivo, and clinical trial challenges, are discussed. In addition, in this article, natural products as one of the most important sources for finding new chemotherapeutics were reviewed and over 700 reported molecules with efficacy against CNS cancer cells are gathered and classified according to their structure. Based on the clinical trials that have been registered, very few of these natural or semi-synthetic derivatives have been studied in humans. The review can help researchers understand the involved mechanisms and design new goal-oriented studies for drug development against CNS malignancies.

Abstract
Aristolochic acid analogues (AAAs) are well-known toxins. We performed the first comprehensive screening on AAAs in Asari Radix et Rhizoma (underground part of Asarum heterotropoides Schmidt), the only Aristolochiaceae plant widely used in clinical practice. LC-HRMS revealed 70 trace AAAs using polygonal mass defect filtering and precursor ion list strategies, 38 of which were newly discovered in A. heterotropoides. UHPLC-QTrap-MS/MS was then utilized for quantitative/semiquantitative analysis of 26 abundant compounds. Seventeen AAAs were detected from 91 batches of A. heterotropoides and 20 AAAs from 166 consumable products. For 141 Asari-containing proprietary products, aristolactam I and aristolactam II-glucoside exhibited the widest distribution, present in 98% products. AA IVa was the most abundant, detected in 91%. Notably, 60% of the products contained AA I (0.03-0.79 ppm). The safety was assessed using linear extrapolation, permitted daily exposure, cumulative amount, and the margin of exposure. It is recommended that AA I content be limited to 3 ppm.

Abstract
The interactions between microbes and plants are governed by complex chemical signals, which can forcefully affect plant growth and development. Here, to understand how microbes influence Houttuynia cordata Thunb. plant growth and its secondary metabolite through chemical signals, we established the interaction between single bacteria and a plant. We inoculated H. cordata seedlings with bacteria isolated from their roots. The results showed that the total fresh weight, the total dry weight, and the number of lateral roots per seedling in the P. fluorescens-inoculated seedlings were 174%, 172% and 227% higher than in the control seedlings. Pseudomonas fluorescens had a significant promotional effect of the volatile contents compared to control, with β-myrcene increasing by 192%, 2-undecanone by 203%, decanol by 304%, β-caryophyllene by 197%, α-pinene by 281%, bornyl acetate by 157%, γ-terpinene by 239% and 3-tetradecane by 328% in P. fluorescens-inoculated H. cordata seedlings. the contents of chlorogenic acid, rutin, quercitin, and afzelin were 284%, 154%, 137%, and 213% higher than in control seedlings, respectively. Our study provided basic data to assess the linkages between endophytic bacteria, plant phenotype and metabolites of H. cordata to provide an insight into P. fluorescens use as biological fertilizer, promoting the synthesis of medicinal plant compounds.

Abstract
The species Fissistigma oldhamii (Hemsl.) Merr. (Annonaceae) has long been used as a traditional herbal medicine in China to treat diverse human diseases. Decoctions from the roots of the plant (Guā Fù Mù) are used to treat body pain and inflammatory pathologies, such as rheumatic syndromes, sciatica, and osteoarthritis. The phytochemical content of the plant and the associated pharmacological activities have been analyzed. Seventy natural products were identified in the different parts of the plants, namely, the roots, stems, leaves, fruits, and seeds. The compounds comprise many tri- and tetracyclic alkaloids (aporphine-type), anthraquinones, terpenoids, flavonoids, and others. The pharmacological properties of these molecules were analyzed to point out the anti-inflammatory, antioxidant, anticancer, and/or antimicrobial effects, together with the underlying modulated pathways and molecular targets in some cases. The panel of phytoconstituents present in F. oldhamii extracts is large, with the majority of bioactive products identified in the roots and stems. Multiple molecules can contribute to the anti-inflammatory properties of the extracts. Network pharmacology analyses of the phytoconstituents are needed to better delineate the effective components and their targets.

Abstract
Candida albicans is a common opportunistic pathogen and normally resides in the human gut. Increasing number of reports link the overgrowth of C. albicans to the severity of ulcerative colitis (UC). Sodium houttuyfonate (SH), a derivative of the medicinal herb Houttuynia cordata Thunb, has been demonstrated to exhibit decent antifungal and anti-inflammatory activities. We showed previously that SH could ameliorate colitis mice infected with C. albicans. However, it is unclear whether the therapeutic effect of SH is connected to its modulation of intestinal microflora in UC. In this study, the impact of SH on the gut microbiota was explored in both cohabitation and non-cohabitation patterns. The results showed that in UC mice inflicted by C. albicans, the administration of SH could greatly improve the pathological signs, weaken the oxidative stress and inflammatory response, and enhance the intestinal mucosal integrity. By 16S rRNA gene sequencing, we found that C. albicans interference caused intestinal microbiota dysbiosis accompanied by an increase of some harmful pathogens including Klebsiella and Bacteroides. In contrast, SH could modulate the abundance and diversity of microbiota with an increase of several beneficial bacteria comprising short-chain fatty acid-producing bacteria (Lachnospiraceae_NK4A136_group, Intestinimonas) and probiotics (Lactobacillus and Alloprevotella). Furthermore, the cohabitation strategy could also prove the efficacy of SH, indicating a role of transmissible gut flora in the colitis model. These findings suggest that SH might be an effective compound for the treatment of UC complicated by C. albicans overgrowth through maintaining gut microbiota homeostasis, thereby improving intestinal function.

Abstract
At present, a variety of vaccines have been approved, and existing antiviral drugs are being tested to find an effective treatment for coronavirus disease 2019 (COVID-19). However, no standardized treatment has yet been approved by the World Health Organization. The virally encoded chymotrypsin-like protease (3CLpro) from severe acute respiratory syndrome coronavirus 2 (SARS-CoV-2), which facilitates the replication of SARS-CoV in the host cells, is one potential pharmacological target for the development of anti-SARS drugs. Online search engines, such as Web of Science, Google Scholar, Scopus and PubMed, were used to retrieve data on the traditional uses of medicinal plants and their inhibitory effects against the SARS-CoV 3CLpro. Various pure compounds, including polyphenols, terpenoids, chalcones, alkaloids, biflavonoids, flavanones, anthraquinones and glycosides, have shown potent inhibition of SARS-CoV-2 3CLpro activity with 50% inhibitory concentration (IC50) values ranging from 2-44 µg/mL. Interestingly, most of these active compounds, including xanthoangelol E (isolated from Angelica keiskei), dieckol 1 (isolated from Ecklonia cava), amentoflavone (isolated from Torreya nucifera), celastrol, pristimerin, tingenone and iguesterin (isolated from Tripterygium regelii), tannic acid (isolated from Camellia sinensis), and theaflavin-3,3'-digallate, 3-isotheaflav1in-3 gallate and dihydrotanshinone I (isolated from Salvia miltiorrhiza), had IC50 values of less than 15 µg/mL. Kinetic mechanistic studies of several active compounds revealed that their mode of inhibition was dose-dependent and competitive, with Ki values ranging from 2.4-43.8 μmol/L. Given the significance of plant-based compounds and the many promising results obtained, there is still need to explore the phytochemical and mechanistic potentials of plants and their products. These medicinal plants could serve as an effective inexpensive nutraceutical for the general public to help manage COVID-19.

Abstract
Asari Radix et Rhizoma (AR) is a widely-used Chinese herbal medicine containing multiple active lignans and rare nephrotoxic components-aristolochic acids derivatives (AAs). However, the current quality control method carried out by Chinese Pharmacopoeia has defects in trace AAs detection and insufficient marker ingredients, which is unable to comprehensively evaluate the efficacy and safety of AR. To improve the quality control method of AR, a rapid, sensitive, and reliable chromatographic analytic method based on ultra-high-performance liquid chromatography-triple quadrupole tandem mass spectrometry (UHPLC-QqQ-MS) was established for the simultaneous analysis of multiple AAs and lignans in AR samples. Positive electrospray ionization mode with multiple reaction monitoring (MRM) was applied for the detection of the eight analytes. The method showed available linearity (R 2 ≥ 0.991), the limit of quantification (2-5 ng/mL), precision (RSD <8.12%), and accuracy (89.78-112.16%). A total of 6 AAs and 2 lignans were quantified for their content in 15 AR samples. The content of AA-IVa, AA-VIIa, and aristololactam I (AL-I) was much higher than the AA-I controlled by pharmacopoeia. Considering the potential toxicity of AAs, AA-IVa, AA-VIIa, and AL-I should also be controlled in AR. A considerable amount of active sesamin was detected in AR, suggesting that it could be added as a quality marker for the quality control of AR. The newly developed analytical method could be applied for the fast evaluation of toxic AA's content and quality during quality control of AR or preparations containing AR.

Abstract
Houttuynia cordata Thunb (H. cordata) is a rhizomatous, herbaceous, and perennial plant widely distributed in Asia. It has multiple chemical constituents, such as alkaloids, essential oils, phenolic acids, and flavonoids used against various health problems. The essential oils and flavonoids are the main components of H. cordata that play an essential role in disease treatment and traditional health care. Moreover, the leaves and stems of H. cordata have a long medicinal history in China. In addition, H. cordata is used against several health issues, such as cold, cough, fever, pneumonia, mumps, and tumors, due to its anti-inflammatory, anti-bacterial, anti-viral, anti-oxidant, and anti-tumor effects. It protects organs due to its anti-inflammatory activity. H. cordata regulates immunity by enhancing immune barriers of the oral cavity, vagina, and gastrointestinal tract, and shows broad-spectrum activity against liver, lung, breast, and colon tumors. However, there are some gaps to be filled to understand its pathways and mechanisms. Mechanisms such as its interaction with cells, cell membranes, and various drugs are important. Studies in relation to the blood–brain barrier, lipophilicity, cAMP signaling, and skin permeability, including pharmaceutical effects, will be very useful. This review includes the biological and pharmacological activities of H. cordata based on up-to-date research.

Abstract
Aristolactams (ALs) have been recognized as one kind of metabolites of aristolochic acids (AAs), the nephrotoxic components of Aristolochiaceae plants, and are more widely distributed than AAs in herbal medicines. This study evaluated the oral subacute nephrotoxicity of aristolactam I (AL I), a representative compound of ALs. AL I was intragastrically administered to rats at 20 mg·kg-1·d-1 for 10 or 20 days, with aristolochic acid I (AA I) used as positive control at the same dose. After 10-day treatment, AL I led to a significant increase in early renal injury-related indices in urine and obvious histopathological lesions in kidneys, including degeneration of tubular epithelial cells, inflammatory cell infiltration and fibrosis. The lesions induced by AL I were significantly aggravated after 20-day exposure. However, AL I induced less histopathological damage in kidneys than AA I in both 10- and 20-day groups. Our results indicated that oral AL I caused nephrotoxicity by inducing oxidative stress, inflammation, and overactivation of the complement system as AA I did. Three detected apoptosis-associated indicators were not affected by AL I but remarkably increased by AA I. In summary, oral AL I induced evident renal damage in rats after only 10 days of treatment, and the damage was aggravated after 20 days. However, AL I was obviously less nephrotoxic than AA I via oral gavage.

Abstract
INTRODUCTION Plants containing aristolochic acid and its derivatives are nephrotoxic, mutagenic, and carcinogenic to humans; chronic diet poisoning caused by the aristolochic acid is the cause of endemic (Balkan) nephropathy and related cancers. OBJECTIVE To develop a colloidal gold immunochromatographic test strip (ICS) based on the competitive format for the rapid detection of aristolochic acid A (AA-A) in herbal medicinal materials. MATERIALS AND METHODS For the ICS based on gold nanoparticles (AuNPs), the antigen [AA-A-bovine serum albumin (BSA)], and goat anti-mouse IgG were drawn on the nitrocellulose membrane as the test line (T line) and the control line (C line), respectively. Monoclonal antibody (MAb)-AuNP conjugates were sprayed onto the conjugate pad. The sensitivity of the ICS was 6 ng/mL, and the test was completed in 10 min. The analysis of AA-A in traditional Chinese medicine samples showed that the ICS results were in good agreement with those obtained by high-performance liquid chromatography methods. CONCLUSION These results demonstrated that the ICS test could be used as a reliable, rapid, cost-effective, and convenient qualitative tool for on-site screening techniques to detect AA-A in herbal medicinal materials without any special instrumentation.

Abstract
Houttuynia cordata Thunb., a perennial herb belonging to the Saururaceae family is a well-known ingredient of Traditional Chinese medicine (TCM) with several therapeutic properties. During the severe acute respiratory syndrome (SARS) outbreak in China, it was one of the approved ingredients in SARS preventative formulations and therefore, the plant may contain novel bioactive chemicals that can be used to suppress the replication of severe acute respiratory syndrome coronavirus 2 (SARS-CoV-2), a virus for which there are currently no effective drugs available. Like all RNA viruses, SARS-CoV-2 encode RNA-dependent RNA polymerase (RdRp) enzyme which aids viral gene transcription and replication. The present study is aimed at understanding the potential of bioactive compounds from H. cordata as inhibitors of the SARS-CoV-2 RdRp enzyme. We investigated the drug-likeness of the plant's active constituents, such as alkaloids, polyphenols, and flavonoids, as well as their binding affinity for the RdRp enzyme. Molecular docking experiments show that compounds 3 (1,2,3,4,5-pentamethoxy-dibenzo-quinolin-7-one), 14 (7-oxodehydroasimilobine), and 21 (1,2-dimethoxy-3-hydroxy-5-oxonoraporphine) have a high affinity for the drug target and that the complexes are maintained by hydrogen bonds with residues like Arg553, Cys622 and Asp623, as well as hydrophobic interactions with other residues. The lead compounds' complexes with the target enzyme remained stable throughout the molecular dynamics simulation. Analysis of molecular mechanics Poisson-Boltzmann surface area (MM-PBSA) and molecular mechanics generalized Born surface area (MM-GBSA) revealed the key residues contributing considerably to binding free energy. Thus, the findings reveal the potential of H. cordata bioactive compounds as anti-SARS-CoV-2 drug candidate molecules against the target enzyme.

Abstract
Houttuynia cordata has been used as a traditional medicine for more than 1500 years. It has aroused wide public concern about its safety in the past few years, for it contains various aristolactams. However, the safety of H. cordata extract remains unclear. In the present study, single dose (2000 mg/kg) and subacute (250, 500, and 1000 mg/kg/day for 28 days) oral toxicity studies of the 95% ethanol extract of H. cordata (HCE) were performed in both male and female Sprague-Dawley (SD) rats. Hematological, biochemical, histopathological parameters, and plasma metabolic profiling were assessed. The single-dose toxicity of HCE was more than 2000 mg/kg. The subacute toxicity results showed that no significant adverse effect of HCE was observed at 250 mg/kg/day. However, five rats died in 500 and 1000 mg/kg/day groups and exhibited toxicities to liver and kidney. Plasma metabolic profiling analysis suggested that a number of metabolic disturbances were induced by oral administration of HCE, focusing on energy metabolism, amino acid metabolism, and lipids metabolism. Moreover, it appeared that male rats were more susceptible to the toxic effects of HCE than female rats. Therefore, in this preliminary study, oral administration of HCE 250 mg/kg/day can be regarded as the no observed adverse effect level in rats over 28 days. However, long-term use of HCE with large doses exhibited some hepatotoxicity and nephrotoxicity in rats.

Abstract
Cervical cancer is the most important female genital cancer that develops from the cervix, a lower part of uterus. Houttuynia cordata is ubiquitously present in Asian countries, and traditionally prescribed to treat infections and oedema. Our study emphasizes on biological synthesis route for developing copper nanocomplex using Houttuynia cordata (Hc-CuONPs) plant extract. The UV-visible spectroscopy study of Hc-CuONPs revealed the maximum peak at 350 nm, which proved the formation of Hc-CuONPs and FT-IR absorption peaks revealed the existence of different functional groups. The results of high-resolution TEM and X-ray diffraction studies revealed that the Hc-CuONPs have face centred cubic structure along with 40-45 nm in size. The temperature conditions of the synthesized Hc-CuONPs were spherical and circular morphologies. Furthermore, the Hc-CuONPs (IC50=5 µg/ml) exhibited toxicity on cervical cancer cells (HeLa). The intracellular reactive oxygen species (ROS) level in the control and Hc-CuONPs-treated HeLa cells was monitored by DCFH-DA staining and the apoptotic cell death was detected by using the dual (AO/EtBr) staining, propidium iodide and DAPI staining assays. Our results from the fluorescent staining analysis evidenced that the Hc-CuONPs have inhibited the cell proliferation and promoted the apoptotic cell death in HeLa cells. The Hc-CuONPs promoted the apoptosis by targeting the PI3K/Akt signalling pathways in HeLa cells. Our results explored that the Hc-CuONPs are effective against in vitro HeLa cancer cells.

Abstract
Houttuynia cordata (H. cordata) is a popular vegetable in Asian countries and is also used extensively as herbal medicine in treating various diseases. H. cordata contains aristolactams, which have a similar Chinese name as aristolochic acids (AAs); hence, an emerging concern in the greater China region has arisen about the potential linkage between H. cordata and aristolochic acid nephropathy (AAN). However, only a single study has tested for the presence of AAs in H. cordata samples, and the analysis was limited by the analytical sensitivity of the method. Thus, further analysis of AAs in H. cordata using analytical method of higher sensitivity is needed to alleviate public anxiety over the use of this popular vegetable. In this study, a liquid chromatography-tandem mass spectrometry (LC-MS/MS) method was used to analyze H. cordata samples for the natural existence of aristolochic acid I (AA-I) and aristolochic acid II (AA-II), which are the most carcinogenic and nephrotoxic compounds in the AA family. After evaluating the method performance by fortifying blank samples with three concentrations of AAs, the validated method was applied to identify AA-I and AA-II in both fresh and sun-dried H. cordata samples (n = 20) collected from different cities in China. The LC-MS/MS method achieved method detection limits (MDLs) as low as 2 ng/g of AAs in H. cordata. Analysis of the collected fresh and sun-dried H. cordata samples revealed that AA-I and AA-II either do not exist naturally in H. cordata or exist at concentrations below the MDLs. Therefore, it is not very likely that consumption of H. cordata will result in AAN because AA-I and AA-II, the nephrotoxic and carcinogenic culprits of AAN, are not produced naturally in the plant or are produced at levels that do not pose a risk of AAN.

Abstract
The present study addressed the possible effects of fishwort (Houttuynia cordata) powder (FWP) on Nile tilapia's skin mucus parameter, serum immune response, and growth performance. Three hundred twenty tilapia fingerlings (average weight of 39.06 ± 0.16 g) were divided into four treatments and fed four levels of FWP; 0, 5, 10, and 20 g kg-1 for 72 days. Completed randomised design of the four replications was applied and revealed that fish fed FWP significantly improved skin mucus lysozyme activity (SMLA). The highest value (P < 0.05) was recorded in fish fed 10 g kg-1 FWP. However, no significant difference in SMLA was observed by feeding the fish 5 and 20 g kg-1 FWP. Significant (P < 0.05) enhanced skin mucus peroxidase activity (SMPA) was observed in fish fed 10 g kg-1 FWP, but no significant difference in SMPA was detected between FWP supplemented diets (5 and 20 g kg-1 FWP) and the control group. Regarding serum immunity, dietary administration of FWP showed significantly (P < 0.05) improved serum lysozyme, peroxidase, alternative complement (ACH50), and phagocytosis vs. the control. The highest values of serum immunity (P < 0.05) were recorded in fish fed 10 g kg-1 FWP. However, no significance in respiratory burst activity was observed. Similarly, no significant difference in growth performance, feed conversion ratio, and survival rate was observed in fish fed FWP compared to the control. In summary, diets supplemented with FWP (10 g kg-1) increased the serum and mucosal immunity; however, no FWP supplementations had effects on Nile tilapia growth and survival rate.

Abstract
Oxidative stress acts as an essential culprit factor in the development of stroke and Alzheimer’s disease. Norcepharadione B possesses various pharmacologic features as an extract obtained from Houttuynia cordata. Nevertheless, the anti-apoptotic and neuroprotective characteristics of norcepharadione B remain unclear. In this study, the neuronal protection effect provided by norcepharadione B against injury caused by hydrogen peroxide (H2O2) in HT22 cell as well as the fundamental mechanism was systematically explored. The neurotoxicity assays of hippocampal cells, which were co-cultured with H2O2, showed that norcepharadione B had the ability to insulate the toxicity induced by H2O2 with significant reduced cell apoptosis. Besides, norcepharadione B potentiated the activity of superoxide dismutase (SOD), increased the level of glutathione (GSH), and decreased malondialdehyde content. The H2O2-induced apoptotic protein Bax was suppressed, and the anti-apoptotic protein Bcl-2 was boosted by norcepharadione B. Norcepharadione B promoted Akt phosphorylation and further upregulated heme oxygenase (HO-1) in cells exposed to oxidative stress. However, the inductive effect of HO-1 by norcepharadione B was shut off via the PI3K/Akt inhibitor LY294002. Furthermore, 2-h incubation with H2O2 substantially increased cell volume in HT22 cells, while norcepharadione B effectively alleviated such effect by interrupting the activation of VSOR Cl− channel. Collectively, our data revealed protective properties of norcepharadione B in resisting oxidative stress induced by H2O2 through elevation of HO-1 in the dependence of PI3K/Akt and in inhibiting H2O2-induced cell swelling by VSOR Cl− channel obstruction in HT22 cells. Impact statement Norcepharadione B is an aporphine alkaloid compound extracted from Chinese herb Houttuynia cordata. It was well known for its anti-inflammatory, anti-cancer, and anti-platelet aggregation outcomes. Our study demonstrated that Norcepharadione B protected hippocampal neurons against oxidative stress and the resultant cell apoptosis upon H2O2 exposure. Meanwhile, Norcepharadione B also substantially reduced cell swelling induced by H2O2 via inhibiting VSOR Cl− channel in neurons. These findings uncovered the potential mechanisms of Norcepharadione B in protecting neuron apoptosis under oxidative stress and propose that Norcepharadione B may serve as a favorable herb medicine for restoring neuronal injury in the pathogenesis of stroke together with other neurodegenerative diseases.

Abstract
Purpose: Metformin and Houttuynia cordata are representative anti-diabetic therapeutic agents in western and oriental medicinal fields, respectively. The present study examined the therapeutic effects of houttuynia cordata extract (HCE) and metformin in combination in a dysmetabolic mouse model. Methods: Metabolic disorders were induced in C57BL/6J mice by high fat diet (HFD) for 14 weeks. Results: Combination of metformin and HCE significantly lowered body weight, abdominal fat, perirenal fat, liver and kidney weights, but did not change epididymal fat in HFD-fed animals. Metformin + HCE treatment markedly attenuated the elevated serum levels of TG, TC, AST, ALT, and endotoxin and restored the depleted HDL level. Both HCE and metformin + HCE treatment ameliorated glucose tolerance and high level of fasting blood glucose in association with AMPK activation. Moreover, treatment with HCE + metformin dramatically suppressed inflammation in HFD-fed animals via inhibition of proinflammatory cytokines (MCP-1 and IL-6) and LPS receptor (TLR4). Histopathological findings showed that exposure of HFD-treated animals to metformin + HCE ameliorated fatty liver, shrinkage of intestinal villi and adipocytes enlargement. Furthermore, HCE and metformin + HCE treatments markedly modulated the abundance of gut Gram-negative bacteria, including Escherichia coli and Bacteriodetes fragilis, but not universal Gram-positive bacteria. Conclusions: Overall, HCE and metformin cooperatively exert their therapeutic effects via modulation of gut microbiota, especially reduction of Gram-negative bacteria, resulting in alleviation of endotoxemia.

Abstract
Herbal medicine, as an integral component of oriental medicine, has assimilated into the lives of Asian people for millennia. The therapeutic efficiency of herbal extracts and ingredients has, however, been limited by various factors, including the lack of targeting capacity and poor bioavailability. Hydrogels are hydrophilic polymer networks that can imbibe a substantial amount of fluids. They are biocompatible, and may enable sustained drug release. Hydrogels, therefore, have attracted widespread studies in pharmaceutical formulation. This article first reviews the latest progress in the development of hydrogel-based materials as carriers of herbal medicines, followed by a discussion of the relationships between hydrogel properties and carrier performance. Finally, the promising potential of using hydrogels to combine medicinal herbs with synthetic drugs in one single treatment will be highlighted as an avenue for future research.

A concise total synthesis of aristolactam alkaloids by a synergistic combination of C–H bond activation and dehydro-Diels–Alder reactions is described. To achieve the synthesis two new synthetic methodologies, namely the oxidative cyclization of benzamides with vinyl sulfone leading to 3-methyleneisoindolin-1-ones via a ruthenium-catalyzed C–H bond activation, and a dehydro-Diels–Alder reaction followed by the fluoride ion mediated desulfonylation of 3-methyleneisoindolin-1-ones with benzynes, were developed. The method presented allows the opportunity for the construction of all the rings of aristolactams from easily available starting materials.

Abstract
ETHNOPHARMACOLOGICAL RELEVANCE Houttuynia cordata is an important traditional Chinese medicine used in heat-clearing and detoxifying, swelling and discharging pus, promoting diuresis and relieving stranguria which recorded in Pharmacopoeia of the people's Republic of China (2015 Edition). H. cordata has been recorded in the book Bencaogangmu which was written by Shizhen Li for the treatment of pyretic toxicity, carbuncle swelling, haemorrhoids, and rectocele diseases. AIM OF THE STUDY Phytochemical investigation of the aerial parts of H. cordata and evaluation of their PTP1B inhibitory activities and hepatoprotective activities. MATERIALS AND METHODS The dried aerial parts of H. cordata were fractionated by liquid-liquid extraction to obtain CHCl3, ethyl acetate, and n-butanolic fractions. The CHCl3 fraction was confirmed active fraction by the bioactivity-guided investigation, which was isolated and purified by chromatographing over silica gel, Sephadex LH-20, MPLC, and preparative HPLC. The chemical structures of the purified compounds were identified by their spectroscopic data and references. RESULTS Eight new compounds (1-8), together with fourteen known compounds (9-22) were isolated from the aerial parts of H. cordata. The known compounds (9-22) were obtained from this plant for the first time. Among them, some compounds exhibited moderate bioactivities. CONCLUSION Compounds (1-8) were identified as new alkaloids, and the known alkaloids (9-22) were isolated from this plant for the first time. Compounds 1, 4, 14, and 19 showed significant PTP1B inhibitory activities with IC50 values of 1.254, 2.016, 2.672, and 1.862µm, respectively. Compounds 1, 3, 6, 11, 17, and 20 (10µm) exhibited moderate hepatoprotective activities against D-galactosamine-induced WB-F344 cells damage.

Abstract
BACKGROUND Literature data indicate that brain-derived neurotrophic factor (BDNF), cyclic-AMP response element-binding protein (CREB) and phospho-CREB (pCREB) may have a place in depression. BDNF belongs to the neurotrophin family that plays an important role in proliferation, survival and differentiation of different cell populations in the mammalian nervous system. The herbal mixture used in the present study consists of Euphoria longana, Houttuynia cordata and Dioscorea japonica. The purpose of the present study was to determine the neuroprotective effect of herbal mixture. We also tested the hypothesis that administration of herbs reverses memory deficits and promotes the protein expression of BDNF in the mouse brain. METHODS Mice were randomized into four different treatment groups (n = 10/group). Normal and stress groups received regular lab chow without stress and under stress conditions, respectively, for 3 weeks. The animals in the stress group were immobilized for 4 hours a day for 2 weeks. Different doses of herbal mixture (206 and 618 mg/kg) were administered for 3 weeks to those mice under stress conditions. Mice were analyzed by behavioral tests and immunoblotting examination in the hippocampus and cortex. An additional in vitro investigation was performed to examine whether herbs induce neurotoxicity in a human neuroblastoma cell line, SH-SY5Y cells. RESULTS No significant toxicity of herbs on human neuroblastoma cells was observed. These herbs demonstrated an inductive effect on the expression of BDNF, pCREB and pAkt. For spatial working memory test, herbal mixture fed mice exhibited an increased level of spontaneous alternation (p < 0.01) compared to those in stress conditions. Moreover, herbal mixture produced highly significant (p < 0.01) reduction in the immobility time in the tail suspension test. Mice in the herbal mixture groups demonstrated lower serum corticosterone concentration than mice in the stress group (p < 0.05). Effects of the oral administration of herbal mixture on protein levels of BDNF in the hippocampi and cortices were significant. CONCLUSIONS Our study showed that herbal mixture administration has antidepressant effects in mice. It is proposed that adverse events such as stress and depression can modulate the expression of molecular players of cellular plasticity in the brain.

Abstract
Fifteen compounds were extracted and purified from the leaves of Nelumbo nucifera Gaertn. cv. Rosa-plena. These compounds include liriodenine (1), lysicamine (2), (-)-anonaine (3), (-)-asimilobine (4), (-)-caaverine (5), (-)-N-methylasimilobine (6), (-)-nuciferine (7), (-)-nornuciferine (8), (-)-roemerine (9), 7-hydroxydehydronuciferine (10) cepharadione B (11), β-sitostenone (12), stigmasta-4,22-dien-3-one (13) and two chlorophylls: pheophytin-a (14) and aristophyll-C (15). The anti-oxidation activity of the compounds was examined by antiradical scavenging, metal chelating and ferric reducing power assays. The results have shown that these compounds have antioxidative activity. The study has also examined the antiproliferation activity of the isolated compounds against human melanoma, prostate and gastric cancer cells. The results shown that 7-hydroxydehydronuciferine (10) significantly inhibited the proliferation of melanoma, prostate and gastric cancer cells. Together, these findings suggest that leaves of Nelumbo nucifera Gaertn. cv. Rosa-plena are a good resource for obtaining the biologically active substances with antioxidant properties.

Abstract
The present review is an attempt to put an insight into a medicinal plant Houttuynia cordata Thunb, which is indigenous to North-East India and China. It is an aromatic medicinal herb belonging to family Saururaceae and is restricted to specialized moist habitats. The review provides detailed information regarding the morphology, distribution, phytochemistry, ethnopharmacological uses and also describes various pharmacological activities reported on the plant H. cordata. The review describes therapeutic efficacy of the whole plant and its extracts, fractions and isolated compounds in different diseased condition. Among the important pharmacological activities reported includes, anti-mutagenic, anti-cancer, adjuvanticity, anti-obesity, hepatoprotective, anti-viral, anti-bacterial, anti-inflammatory, free radical scavenging, anti-microbial, anti-allergic, anti-leukemic, chronic sinusitis and nasal polyps activities. Thus, the present review will act as a source of referential information to researchers to perform clinical studies on isolated compounds that may serve the society and will help in improving human health care system.

Abstract
Nelumbo nucifera Gaertn. cv. Rosa-plena (Nelumbonaceae), commonly known as lotus, is a perennial aquatic plant grown and consumed throughout Asia. All parts of N. nucifera have been used for various medicinal purposes in oriental medicine. From the leaves of Nelumbo nucifera Gaertn. cv. Rosa-plena (an aquatic plant), liriodenine (1), lysicamine (2), (−)-anonaine (3), (-)-asimilobine (4), (-)-caaverine (5), (-)-N-methylasimilobine (6), (-)-nuciferine (7), (-)-nornuciferine (8), (-)-roemerine (9), 7-hydroxydehydronuciferine (10) and cepharadione B (11) were isolated and identification and anthelmintic activities of aporphine was evaluated against Anisakis simplex and Hymenolepis nana. This study found that the above constituents killed H. nana or reduced their spontaneous movements (oscillation/peristalsis). However, the above constituents at various concentrations demonstrated no larvicidal effect or ability to halt spontaneous parasite movement for 72 h against A. simplex, respectively. In addition, according to an assay of cestocidal activity against H. nana and nematocidal activity against A. simplex, we found that the above compounds showed greater lethal efficacy on H. nana than against A. simplex. Further investigation showed that these above constituents have effects against peroxyl radicals under cestocidal effect. Together, these findings suggest that these constituents of Nelumbo nucifera Gaertn. cv. Rosa-plena might be used as anthelmintic agents against H. nana.

Abstract
Present study is an attempt to investigate plausible mechanism involved behind antidiabetic activity of standardized Houttuynia cordata Thunb. extract in streptozotocin-induced diabetic rats. The plant is used as a medicinal salad for lowering blood sugar level in North-Eastern parts of India. Oral administration of extract at 200 and 400 mg/kg dose level daily for 21 days showed a significant (P < 0.05) decrease in fasting plasma glucose and also elevated insulin level in streptozotocin-induced diabetic rats. It also significantly reversed all the alterations in biochemical parameters, that is, total lipid profile, blood urea, creatinine, protein, and antioxidant enzymes in liver, pancreas, and adipose tissue of diabetic rats. Furthermore, we have demonstrated that the extract significantly reversed the expression patterns of various glucose homeostatic enzyme genes like GLUT-2, GLUT-4, and caspase-3 levels but did not show any significant effect on PPAR- γ protein expressions. Additionally, the extract positively regulated mitochondrial membrane potential and succinate dehydrogenase (SDH) activity in diabetic rats. The findings justified the antidiabetic effect of H. cordata which is attributed to an upregulation of GLUT-4 and potential antioxidant activity, which may play beneficial role in resolving complication associated with diabetes.

Abstract
Antipyretic and toxin-eliminating traditional Chinese herbs are believed to possess antiviral activity. In this study, we screened extracts of 22 herbs for activity against enterovirus 71 (EV71). We found that only extracts of Houttuynia cordata Thunb. could neutralize EV71-induced cytopathic effects in Vero cells. The 50% inhibitory concentration of H. cordata extract for EV71 was 125.92 ± 27.84 μg/ml. Antiviral screening of herb extracts was also conducted on 3 genotypes of EV71, coxsackievirus A16 and echovirus 9. H. cordata extract had the highest activity against genotype A of EV71. A plaque reduction assay showed that H. cordata extract significantly reduced plaque formation. Viral protein expression, viral RNA synthesis and virus-induced caspase 3 activation were inhibited in the presence of H. cordata extract, suggesting that it affected apoptotic processes in EV71-infected Vero cells by inhibiting viral replication. The antiviral activity of H. cordata extract was greater in cells pretreated with extract than those treated after infection. We conclude that H. cordata extract has antiviral activity, and it offers a potential to develop a new anti-EV71 agent.

Abstract
Houttuynia cordata Thunb. is an edible herb with a variety of pharmacological activities, but only limited information is available about its response towards potassium supplementation. Sterile plantlets were cultured in media with different potassium levels, and parameters related to growth, foliar potassium, water and chlorophyll contents, photosynthesis, transpiration, H2O2 contents and antioxidative enzyme activities were determined after a month. Results showed that 1.28 mM potassium was the optimum for H. cordata as highest values of dry weight, shoot height, root length and number were obtained at this concentration. The optimum potassium concentration resulted in the maximum net photosynthetic rate which could be associated with the highest chlorophyll content rather than limited stomatal conductance. The supply of surplus potassium resulted in higher content of foliar potassium, but negatively correlated with the biomass. Both potassium starvation (0 mM) and high potassium (>1.28 mM) could lead to water loss through high transpiration rate and low water absorption, respectively, and resulted in H2O2 accumulation and increased activities of catalase and peroxidase, which suggested induction of oxidative stress. Moreover, H. cordata showed the minimum of H2O2 content and the maximum of superoxide dismutase activity on 1.28 mM potassium, implying its role in inducing tolerance against oxidative stress.

Abstract
Chemical investigation on the whole plant of Houttuynia cordata has resulted in the isolation of two new compounds, named as houttuynoside A (1) and houttuynamide A (2), together with thirty-eight known compounds. The structures of 1 and 2 were elucidated on the basis of spectroscopic analysis. In the inhibitory effects on herpes simplex virus type 1 (HSV-1) assay, norcepharadione B (10) showed good inhibitory activity against the replication of HSV-1. In addition, the antioxidant and antityrosinase activities of some isolated compounds were also evaluated. Among these compounds, quercitrin (25) and quercetin-3-O-beta-D-galactopyranoside (26) showed excellent 2,2-diphenyl-1-picrylhydrazyl radical-scavenging property with IC50 values of 31 and 63 microM, respectively. Cepharadione B (9) exhibited strong tyrosinase inhibitory activity with an IC50 value of 170 microM.
